www.snowbee.co.uk ANGLERS AND FISHERIES MANAGERS CALL FOR REFORMS TO OUTDATED NETTING REGULATIONS

ITS TOPE TIME IN THE BRISTOL CHANNEL...

Reform of inshore netting regulations is badly needed – that’s the message contained in a joint statement issued this week by the Angling Trust and Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM). The main culprit is the proliferation in the use of monofilament gill nets since their introduction in the 1970s. Since then their use has exploded and the technology of their design has made them increasingly efficient at catching. Yet the regulations around their use have often not kept up with both the technological advances and the pressure many fish stocks are now under as a result. For instance, adult, spawning bass in the North Sea were targeted by the multi-sheet trammel drift net fishery – a relatively recent technological development in netting that proved to be a particularly efficient catching method. Until the EU ban on drift netting for bass in 2016, multi-sheet trammel drift net fishing contributed to the decline in bass and has played its part in the stark scientific advice for zero catches of bass in 2017. The Angling Trust and IFM have published seven key recommendations for reforming inshore netting regulations fit for the 21st century. Included in these recommendations is the requirement for the Inshore Fishery & Conservation Authorities to review local netting bylaws and ensure they are fit for purpose. Ultimately, both the Angling Trust and Institute of Fisheries Management want to see the long term sustainable management of inshore fisheries. Reviewing the regulations around the use of nets includes the opportunity to see how our inshore fisheries could be managed more coherently and consider the unique management requirements of recreational sea angling and the socio-economic benefits that this would bring to coastal communities.

WINNER

The Angling Trust will be following up this joint statement with a dossier of evidence supporting the need to reform inshore netting regulations. The dossier will be published in the coming weeks and will be available on the Angling Trust website. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “Flicking through old angling magazines from 1980 it’s clear that the increase in monofilament gill netting was a major concern back then. Thirty-six years later and the technology and use of these nets has increased dramatically while the regulations governing their use haven’t kept up resulting in the dramatic decline of many inshore fish stocks. Reform of netting regulations is long overdue.” Martin Salter, the Angling Trust’s National Campaigns Coordinator, emphasised: "There is a complete dog's dinner of regulations, loopholes and exemptions covering inshore netting around our coast and it’s high time the rules governing the use of nets were reformed and fit for purpose in the 21st century. The Angling Trust will soon be publishing a dossier of evidence to support the need for reform."

This cracking tope was caught by James Liversidge whilst fishing aboard Minehead based charter boat Osprey which was being skippered by Michael Webber Griffiths, it weighed in at 64lb just 5lb under the Bristol channel record.

Jake MacGregor – Atlantic Bonito (Sarda sarda) – Shorecaught – Hartlepool Heugh, on 4th October 2015. Jake’s fish was ratified at 3lb 8dr and supersedes Mr Blanning’s 1996 record of 2lb 10oz 5dr. Jake’s record was held over from the previous BRFC meeting for ratification pending a valid scales test. Steve Juggins – Undulate Ray (Raja undulata) – Boatcaught – out of Weymouth, on 16th January 2016. Steve’s fish weighed 22lb 13oz, beating Mr Titt’s 1987 record (also caught off the Dorset coast) of 21lb 4oz. Steve was fishing from Lyle Stantiford’s boat, Supanova. The fish was kept alive during the day, landed in Weymouth for weighing and then taken 5 miles back to the place of capture and released alive! All credit to captor and skipper for taking the trouble to return this splendid fish to her home.

Charlie Tudball – Connemara Clingfish (Lepadogaster candolii) – Ilfracombe harbour, on 28th March 2016. England International youth team member and qualified angling coach, Charlie caught his unusual little specimen on a dropshot rig and at 10.9 grams it beats the previous record by just under one gram! Ratification of Charlie’s record is a good example of how modern technology has made the process more efficient. Charlie only received the results of his scales test on the morning of the BRFC meeting, but arranged for his Mum to photograph the claim documents and email them to the BRFC Secretary, so we were able to inspect the paperwork and accept Charlie’s record as the documents were received during the meeting!

Over-use of monofi lament netting threatens fi sh stocks in inshore and estuarine waters around the UK and reform of regulation is long overdue.

Adrian Taylor, IFM’s Director of External Affairs, said: "The regulations covering inshore netting have not kept pace with gear technology and increased fishing pressure. There is a pressing need for more sustainable fisheries management and the recommendations jointly agreed with the Angling Trust aim to achieve this."

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Fishing at the beginning of the month had been fantastic but has slowly become difficult as the month moved on still catching fish though so back to the beginning of the month report started with some more great bass catches for the Sophie Lea and I believe other boats in the area also, tope fishing for us has been difficult generally because we did not have many anglers wanting to spend the money to fish the sixty mile round trip days I know its expensive but its double the distance of general fishing trips and conscientiously double the fuel burn which equals double the price simples. We have had several turbot early in the month mainly

small but nice to see mostly caught on fresh mackerel which once again this year very hard to find why I do not know we used to take them for granted they were always there but now a very hard to find fish. A few nice hounds but once again not in the numbers we used to get and where have all the very big female fish gone probably all in Billingsgate market why o why do commercial netters go after them they don't fetch decent money and they deprive sport fishing boats of one of the best fighting fish in our waters maybe things will change now we are coming out of Europe and our fisherman can regain control of higher value fish stocks.

POOLE DOLPHINS SAC By Paul Driver

We had a Pier Comp at Swanage on Friday 20/5/16. We had a good number of members turn out on what was a breezy night with light showers towards the end of the Match. Well done to Brian Read who won on the night with 235cm, his catch was made up of Garfish and a cracking Undulate Ray of 10lb. Richard Cailes also had an Undulate Ray which was smaller but not weighed, Richard Tied for Second place with Paul Driver on 191cm. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 52cm. The nights catch was made up mainly of Garfish, Wrasse and Pollock. After dark a few Dogfish, Pout and a Small Conger to a Guest around 3lb were caught. Everyone caught on the night with a good variety of species if a little slow at times, we didn't see any Bream caught which was a surprise and no Mackerel although there were plenty of Garfish. There was quite a bit of weed floating around and a lot of brown slimy stuff on the bottom to contend with. The odd hook was pinched off by spider crabs which take some pulling in when they are tangled in the line and are covered in weed. Thank you to Chris Mackenzie for getting the Fish and Chips very welcome on a windy night, enjoyed by all. We had an Evening Boat Charter trip on Monday 23/05/16, with Skipper Andy Adams on Blue Duo. We fished with 5 members, 4 guests and 1 Junior Member. The sun was out but the chilly wind kept the temperature down for most of the night. Leaving over low water and anchoring up on Poole Patch waiting for the tide to pick up we were plagued with small pout. Fishing was rather slow and disappointing, when the target species Bream were hard to come by, 5 Bream were caught on the night along with lots of pout, a few Dogfish, a few Wrasse and a small conger. Well done to Chris Mackenzie who won on the night with 14 fish points. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 11 fish points. We had an Away Shore Comp on Saturday Night 4/6/16 at Shell Bay, Studland. The Weather was as forecast very little wind and very mild. The first hour of the match was unfishable with tonnes of weed barrelling along in the strong spring tide. It wasn't until the tide slackened approaching high water you were able to hold bottom. A lovely evening with lots of boats running in and out of the harbour entrance and lots of barbeques being lit. The fishing was disappointing with most people only managing one fish during the match. Well done to Nick Clements who won the match with a cracking Smoothhound on worm measuring 97cm, Second was Paul Driver with a Wrasse of 35cm and Third was Chris Mackenzie with a Sole of 29cm. Curtis Driver Won the Junior Section with a Smoothhound of 77cm. The comp finished at 10pm to allow members to catch the Chain Ferry back to Sandbanks. A number of members stayed on after the comp and fished on in the dark when the fishing got quite a lot better. Martin Whittaker was unlucky not to catch in the comp but after the match landed a Small eyed Ray of 7lb 1oz and a potential new club record Undulate Ray of 12lb 2oz from the shore. A number of large Smoothhounds were caught in the dark all to Ragworm largest 7lb 8oz.. other species caught Plaice and Bream. Thanks to Chris Mackenzie for bringing and cooking on the Barbeque. We had an Evening Boat Comp on Monday 13/6/16 with skipper Andy Adams on Random Harvest. The plan was to fish off Ballard Point but as soon as we passed Old Harry Rocks the wind had picked up and the waves were too much to make it comfortable to fish. We came back out of the strong southerly breeze to a rough ground mark and anchored up. The rain stayed off apart from one shower at the start and the wind dropped as the night went on. We fished with 6 members 2 guests and 1 junior member. The fishing was really good with everyone catching steadily during the night. Paul Driver won on the night with 24 fish points, Phil Thomas second on 22 fish points and Dave Hoare third with 21 fish points. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 28 fish points. A number of double figured Undulate Rays were caught with the largest falling to Paul Driver at 15lb. A number of nice Smoothounds were caught along with plenty of Bream, plenty of Dogfish, a few Mackerel and the odd Scad, Wrasse and Garfish. We didn't manage a Pout which was a surprise after the last trip. We uped anchor before darkness really set in and i'm sure we would of had a few if we had stayed on in the dark. Everyone enjoyed the night along with the topical banter and the ribbing of the person that forgot the score sheet.

We had a Pier comp at Swanage on Friday 17/6/16. Heavy rain hit Poole in the afternoon and a lot of local roads were flooded thankfully it was localised and the Pier Comp went on in dry weather with a chilly wind, A good number of members turned out despite the earlier rain. Well done to Tony Partridge who won on the night with 212cm, his catch was made up of a number of Ballen Wrasse, a Pout, a Cracking Undulate Ray of 9lb 7oz and a Spotted Ray of 3lb 9oz. Second Phil Thomas with 167 cm and Third Richard Cailes with 149cm. A few rays were caught on the night with Richard Cailes Catching a nice Spotted Ray and Brain Read a Blonde Ray of 3lb 9oz. A good range of species were caught off the pier Ballen Wrasse, Pout, Pollock. Black Bream, Bass, 3 Bearded Rockling, Scorpion fish, Blenny, Goby, Blonde Ray, Undulate Ray and Spotted Ray. A good nights fishing with lots of species, its nice to see a few rays being caught off the pier. Although a number of members tried on the float no Garfish or Mackerel were caught, which was a surprise as we are supposed to be in the middle of summer. We had an Evening Boat Trip on Monday 20/6/16 with skipper Andy Adams on Random Harvest. The Weather was wet and windy during the day but as forecast got better as the day went on and dried up in the afternoon. When we left Poole Quay a fresh westerly was blowing so we didn't venture too far out setting anchor in roughly the same place as last week. We fished with 5 senior members and 1 junior member. New Member Jay Hemming won on the night and impressed with a great total of 73 fish points. His catch was made up of 6 Undulate Rays 5 Bream and 7 Dogfish. Second Paul Driver 16 fish points, Tied in Third was Phil Thomas with a last gasp Ray and Chris Mackenzie on 12 fish Points. Curtis Driver won the junior section with a great score of 33 fish points. His catch was made up of 2 Undulate Rays 2 Bream 4 Dogfish and 1 Mackerel. The weed was a bit of a problem in the strong tide to start but as it slackened off the fishing improved and the wind dropped completely. 10 Undulate Rays were caught on the night, quite a few on or around 10lb mark, the largest on the night was caught by Curtis Driver at 12lb 6oz. 10 Bream up to 2lb were caught along with lots of Dogfish and 1 Mackerel. Everyone caught and enjoyed the fishing with a bit of light hearted banter. We had an Away Shore Comp at Steamer Point on Saturday night 2/07/16. Members fished at different intervals along the beach with a good number of pleasure anglers all hoping for a decent Ray. The wind was quite strong at the start and stirred up the weed. High tide was 20.32 which was perfect for the ebb when most of the rays have been caught. The comp was a real struggle to get a bite let alone a fish. Paul Driver won on the night with 69cm the catch was made up of a Scad and a Green Eel right at the end of the match. Phil Walmsley second with 38 cm and Chris Mackenzie third with 29cm. The wind, the weed and the Trawler going up and down in front of us may have had something to do with it. Every year is different. last year there were lots of species and lots of fish being caught this year totally the opposite. One Undulate Ray was caught by a pleasure angler at the start of the night around 8lb and a few Smooth Hounds after dark, but very little else. We had an Evening Boat Comp on Monday 11th July 2016 with Skipper Andy Adams on Random Harvest. The wind was blowing a strong westerly as we left Poole Quay with hope it would ease off during the evening. The wind was too strong to venture out so we tried a couple of drifts in the Swash and had a couple of small Plaice. The fishing in the Swash was quite slow with quite a bit of weed, so as the wind had dropped a little in this time we ventured out a little further to a couple of banks. The fishing was quite good with plenty of different species being caught dominated by Dogfish 40 in total during the session. Well done to Jay Hemming who won on the night with 37 fish points. His catch was made up of 2 Bream, 9 Dogfish, 1 Plaice, 4 Pouting and a Smoothound. Paul Driver Second with 27 fish points and Dave Reeves third on 26 points. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 22 fish points catching 2 Bream, 8 Dogfish and a Pout. A couple of nice Undulate Rays were Caught, Dave Reeves with one of 12lb 4oz and Chris Mackenzie one of 13lb 8oz. Other species caught Mackerel and Scad but only one of each. The fishing was steady during the evening with quite a few Pout being caught just as it was getting dark. Everyone caught and enjoyed the evening fishing.

MINEHEAD OPEN SPECIES COMP By Vernon Allen

The first weekend of July saw the cream, and some of the skimmed milk, of competition boat anglers assemble at Minehead for the inaugral 2-day Open (Species )Competition.A catch and release scoring system requiring anglers to catch 5 of a species to garner top points. Meeting at the comp HQ, the Ship Aground Public House, a 2 minute walk from the loading steps, participants discovered their weekend draw.

to earn himself ÂŁ150 pool money. Meanwhile "Alykat" decided to head for deeper water and amongst the dogfish Steve Batchelor hauled in a 17lb Blonde ray, after a 15 minute fight, on tackle most anglers would be using for bream. "Fulmar" kept up the pressure with good bags of bream and wrasse but in the end "Alykat" came out as top boat, well done to skipper, Dave Roberts.

Day 1 , a 7am start was met with with typical summers conditions, that is force 6 winds, rain and boats yawing 360 degrees on anchor ropes. However Porlock Bay produced it's normal variety of fish, including a surprise dogfish or 2. Those anglers on 'Osprey' found pollack in good numbers whilst "Teddy Boy" showed the way to boost scorecards by finding the bull huss marks. "Alykat" found some bonus fish including cod and turbot but "Fulmar" , who risked going close inshore, loaded up with wrasse up to 3lbs to keep in the hunt. During the day some boats were treated to close up views of sun fish , dolphins and a baby porpoise.

Many thanks to all the skippers at Minehead what top fellows you are, with your constant supply of hot drinks and willingness to try many different marks you are a pleasure to fish with. Thanks also to Stainless Steve and Neil Bryant of Blue Zone for your sponsorship, much appreciated. A big thank you to Janina and the boys and girls at the Ship Aground who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend. A shout out to Paul Roper who took ill during Saturday, get well soon!

Saturday evening competitors relaxed by taking part in a quiz. Closely fought , husband and wife Simon and Ann Norman with Tim Ashman won through the tie break claiming their crate of wine Day 2 , a different world! No wind, flat seas, and sun. Every angler fished a different boat from the previous day. For those who were able to take in the fine scenery a pair of peregrines provided an exciting aerial display. Teddy Boy" s crew found plenty of pollock and wrasse whilst "Osprey" found the greater number of species including rays. Gary Galbraith landed a Spotted ray of 5lbs 1oz to claim the best specimen of the competition. He also boated the longest pollock of the weekend

Finally a heartfelt thank you to all those anglers who took part, without you it could not have happened The competition came about in response to the Angling Trust deciding that it was not important enough for our sea anglers to have a national boat competition. Well we do, and it is a crying shame that it is beyond the wit of AT to organise it. Individuals results 1st Steve BATCHELOR 2nd Cliff NEWBOLD 3rd Richard RUSSELL 4th Ray BARRON 5th Perry DACK

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

As I write this report I have just over a week to go before I embark on my annual pilgrimage to Havnnes in Northern Norway to get beaten-up by large Cod, Coalies and Halibut. Having endured a pretty slow year so far on the old fishing front I have to say I can’t wait. I’m also looking forward to trying out and reviewing some of the top quality gear kindly supplied by Russell Weston of Snowbee UK. It looks as though the promised 3 months of wall-towall sunshine has finally arrived and although it looks short lived anglers have been getting out and making the most of the conditions. Local rock marks continue to give up some nice sized rays with Lloyd Carty of Rodbenders SAC getting a PB of 10-2 and fellow clubman Rob Wheaton landing a cracking Blonde Ray of 16-10. It’s fair to say that the blonde ray fishing hasn’t really kicked-off as yet, with many of the sandier ray marks suffering from crabs decimating the baits in seconds. Yes, its’ that bad so take plenty of frozen eels with you. Some good huss continue to be caught from the rock marks around Scabbacombe Head to the east of Dartmouth. Dave Downs of Castaways SAC landed a new PB and club record huss of 13-3.5 whilst Andy Plant of Stonehouse SAC also recorded a couple of double-figured huss. You’ll often come across a conger when out huss fishing with large fish baits and Danny Clegg of Rodbenders SAC proved this when he landed a good summertime eel of 25-11 whilst out hussing. With the onset of the recent fine weather many local anglers have been making the trips up to the low water reefs on the Bristol Channel to target rays and hounds. The weekend just passed proved very successful with local anglers with a number of good-sized hounds caught. The best a starry hound of exactly 17lb was caught by the King of Budo himself, Mr Rob Yorke. This was a new club record for Rodbenders SAC. Mark Byrce also landed a cracker of 15-13 and Rob Wheaton a common of 15-12. Continuing their good recent form Dave Downs of Castaways latched into a common smoothie of 14-6 and Gav Cuthbertson landed a common of 13-2 (both being PB’s). As is the case with most smut fishing crab is ‘the’ bait to have.

Some excellent spotted rays continue to be caught locally. Mark Ash of Pot Black SAC fished the Slapton area and was rewarded with a beauty of 6-8 (which was a new PB) whilst Gav Cuthbertson had a stunner of 7-10 from a Cornish beach mark which was a new PB and Castaways Club Record. Just to prove there are fish to be caught other than hounds and ray, Al Hobbs of Roving Rods had a great day up at upper channel mark and landed a number of fish the best being a tasty Dover Sole of 2-5.

Finn Dingal and Mawgan Moxham with nice Cod aboard Sea Angler 2

Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 continues to put his anglers over some fine fishing, with both the wrecks and reefs producing excellent catches of Cod, Ling and Pollack. In the last week Malc has been taking out pupils from Callington Community College as part of their enrichment week and its’ been great to see the youngsters landing some cracking cod. With the sea temps now rising rapidly and mackerel starting to show in better numbers, Malc will soon be kicking-off his shark fishing season. That’s it from me for this month – enjoy your holidays and happy dipping.

Well its finally July and we have been able to catch the first bass of the season for the table. Good numbers of small fish are out on the ground taking lures as well as the bigger fish usually taking the live baits. We have seen plenty of mackerel and scad out on the sand in Poole bay , probably the most I have seen for a few years. Next month will see the start of our free lining trips to target the bass on light gear. Further afield the fishing out in the Channel has continued to be excellent with large pollock still plentiful on certain marks along with cod and ling as well. We have been lucky enough to be treated to

2 john dory’s in as many weeks both around the 4lb mark and both taking shads fished over wrecks. The first trip to Cherbourg this year was very successful with the middle day seeing 15 species come to the net including bream, cod, ling, whiting, tope and many others. Alderney has produced some cracking fishing on the banks, both brill and turbot are in abundance. Roy Turner producing our biggest of the year so far at 13lb 4oz. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The weather at the start of July certainly was unpredictable with squally showers, mist and the usual high winds and the occasional bout of sunshine but as the month rolled on the traditional warmer weather arrived. Local angler Les Jones certainly knew his luck was in on a wreck fishing trip aboard the Mistress Linda on his 2nd drop of the day using a red shad drifting at 3kts he landed a superb 12lb Turbot. Mackeral are being caught in reasonable numbers mixed in with small Scad which make a perfect bait for Bass now the ban has been lifted. There are plenty of small to medium sized Tope being caught. The good Ray fishing continues with some cracking Small Eyed Rays to 13lb 8ozs, it is not uncommon for all 5 main Ray species to be caught on the same trip. Gurnards are well spread across the bay and 1 local angler had his 1st Grey Gurnard followed by a double shot on the next drop. The marks along the piers are starting to produce Plaice, Bream etc on the drift and will continue to improve into September. Trigger fish will soon be appearing and these are excellent sport on light tackle. Drift fishing in the Harbour is producing

some nice Plaice and Bream the main targets but there are many other species including Gilt head Bream to be caught. The wrecks are very unpredictable and the Cod catches are well down on this time last year but a group fishing managed to find decent numbers of Cod to 18lb including a one of 10lb for Zac Quaterman on his 1st wreck fishing trip along with some exceptional size Pollack for this time of year. Over the slack water at anchor many decent size congers to 65lb are being caught with all being released alongside. SIFCA are holding their quarterly RSA meeting soon so if there is anything you wish to propose or are seeking an answer to please email it to me (philip. higgins@virginmedia.com) and I will add it to the agenda for discussion. Sea Angling News, August 2016 NWASAC Match report- 7th round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship, Sun 19.6.16, Rock Channel, New Brighton (17 rods): A local shortage of crabs and clashes with other events reduced attendance for this 7th match in the series. The fishing was good, however, on a very calm, wet evening when dabs, flounders and plaice made up the catches. John Waugh beached a smoothhound in the first hour of the match as the tide was ebbing and together with his 26 other fish, his points score was out of reach; his win consolidated his championship lead. Bill Lindfield’s Zone B win gave him runner-up place and former front runner, Steve Bonner, did enough to move into second place. Some good sized flatfish showed at this low water channel with Carl Edwards’ 1kg plaice the best of them. Results: (Scored in continental style from 2 zones) 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 19 dabs, 5 flounders, 2 plaice, 1 smoothhound, 1037 pts. (Zone A) 2. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 9 dabs, 2 flounders, 381 pts. (Zone B) 3. Carl Edwards (Bootle), 14 dabs, 2 plaice, 473. 4. Mike Hughes (Bangor), 9 dabs, 4 flounders, 293. 5. Mark Roberts (Wirral), 9 dabs, 3 flounders, 3 plaice, 422. 6. Steve Bonner (Wallasey), 5 dabs, 4 flounders, 2 plaice, 280. Roundfish Pool: J. Waugh, smoothhound, 3480 gms. Flatfish Pool: C. Edwards, plaice. 1000 gms. Championship after seven rounds: 1. J. With the state of the tide perfect to try for some of the larger fish Poole bay is famous for, the skipper started the match off by anchoring on a bank a short distance from the harbour to try for rays. Within minutes of arriving at the mark, Team England Home Nations Manager- Steve Bachelor was first in with a decent smalleyed ray, which set the scene for the next two hours during which numerous fine rays were boated including smalleyed rays to over 9lb, undulate rays to over 11lb as well as spotted rays, bream, dogfish and tope- all incredibly fun and testing on light tackle. With several of the competitors neck and neck on points, it was all to play for as a rock mark was chosen to increase the species count. Those fishing off the back of the boat were able to capitalise on a variety of species in amongst the rocks (including numerous wrasse, tompot blenny, goby, gurnard, pout and scad) allowing Ed Taylor to edge into the lead; however, it was Steve Bachelor who up trumps with a stunning specimen cuckoo wrasse of 1lb 6oz. To end the competition a close inshore mark near to Boscombe pier was fished to try for flatfish, however, due to the water clarity only dogfish were boated which allowed Ed Taylor to maintain his lead and win this round of the competition closely followed by Paul Hollyoake on the same number of fish but fewer points. Overall 19 species were caught and 210 fish boated and returned. Results and standings: 1st Ed Taylor 2nd Paul Hollyoake 3rd Chris Ellis. 4th Arran Harmer. 5th Robin Lane. 6th Steve Batchelor. 7th Malcom Stote. 8th Derek Smith. 9th Andy Mapstone. 10th Roland Blomfield.

Craig McClouglin - tope 37lb caught on Bluefin off Ilfracombe

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Boat anglers have been enjoying some fine tope sport off Ilfracombe with fish close to forty pounds boated. Craig McCloughlin of Braunton Baits landed one of the biggest at 37lb whilst fishing on John Barbeary’s Bluefin. Several tope have also been landed aboard Dan Hawkins’ Reel Deal with Ammo Baits owner Ian Tyldesley enjoying success with tope and bass. Mackerel have been scarce most of the time, which is causing concern with the summer now well underway. Bass anglers have been enjoying shore sport with both baits and lures working dependent on conditions. Several bass have topped 7lb with Callum Gove of Combe Martin Sea Angling Club landing a 7lb 7oz bass whilst spinning for thin-lipped mullet in the Taw estuary. Combe Martin SAC member David Brooke landed what I believe to be the biggest smoothound from the North Devon coast so far this season. The specimen hound weighed an impressive 15lb 1oz. Fellow club member Derek Ferret fishing with David also enjoyed success landing a specimen smoothound of 11lb 14oz. The smoothound season has been a good one so far with some impressive hauls. Kyle Bishop and Dan Spearman enjoyed another action packed session

with smoothound landing close to twenty hounds in a session the best 10lb 14oz to the rod of Kyle. They also landed a bass and a small-eyed ray of 5lb all in daylight. It was fitting that Michael Squires caught the only weighable fish in Bideford and District Angling Clubs Michael Squires Memorial Trophy. The 10lb 12oz undulate ray was the highlight of the clubs venture to Chesil Beach where members had a good time enjoying a social event with a BBQ. Graham Snow secured first place in Appledore Shipbuilders monthly Rover with a grey mullet of 3lb 151/2oz. Andrew Atkinson took the runner up spot with a ballan wrasse of 4lb101/2oz and Joshua Atkinson was third with a smoothound scaling 9lb 23/8oz.

Ian Tyldesley - tope on Reel Deal off Ilfracombe

Dan Redmore took first and second in Bideford Angling Clubs monthly rover landing a fine brace of small eyed ray weighing in at 9lb 12oz and 9lb 81/4oz. Graham Snow took third place with a thicklipped mullet of 3lb 15oz. Lee Watts took fourth with a smoothound of 9lb 11 1/4oz and fifth with a bass of 6lb 1oz.

Callum Gove - bass 7lb 7oz

ALDERNEY REPORT

Species Hunt and Specimen Hunt. This year it will be fished over the weekend of the 3rd/4th September. Read on but all details are on the poster below plus reports attached here too from previous years.

By Mark Harding Finally we have some reasonable numbers of Mackerel from the Breakwater with rods getting 7 or 8 in a session, such a relief to see them for sure. Nice size to them too but hope we get to see all sizes , huge worry in the Channel regards stock levels and its effect on other species. One or two Pollack starting to show a well which I would think we’ll be seeing in good numbers towards the end of this month and onwards. Conspicuous by their absence despite the good weather are Garfish – maybe now becoming a winter species here in Alderney? Unthinkable! One or two Bass being reported too, no big ones caught this month with the best around 4lb but they are there. Drift divers have seen some good shoals of them with estimates of 6/7lb so need to get the lures in the right place at the right time. Not much falling to the worms baits, just a few Bream both Black and Couches which are small. Plenty of Mullet sighted but no one too bothered to have a go for them. Small strap Conger being caught in the rough and the a few Huss at night, that’s all promising. Hoping this month now with the arrival of the Mackerel one or two things are going to kick in to gear. Out in the boats is where it is all at – lots of variety now with Blonde and Undulate Rays being caught on anchor on the banks. Get alongside the rough edges of the reefs and there are Conger, Huss and Bream showing including some really nice Couches. Tope you will start to find now too, coincides with the arrival of the Mackerel so no secret there and we’re getting fish to 40lb at the minute, got better fishing to come I think. Lots of small bits to aim for on the anchor as well in addition to the aforementioned so if you are species hunting this is going to be great for you. On the drift there are still some Turbot about although numbers have thinned out, we have had a good average size this year and just two days ago friends of mine were out and had 18 to 14lb 8oz. A good mix of Brill too with lots of decent fish reported – you’ll see them on the other port reports too as well as here in this edition. Brill have been running to 12lb which is massive but weekly I am getting reports of fish in the 6-9lb bracket. Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 Two matches fished last month. Fish Race!! A difficult match given the circumstances of the lack of any real quality to our angling at the moment until the ’elements’ sort themselves out hence why this match has been held back to fish at a suitable time. It was then compounded by Aurigny being unable to fly in any live ragworm and there we have it – a can of worms opened as to what’s what. Actually those worms could have proved useful – I digress! Only 10 fished but the same fervent anticipation was there as always. Everyone bar myself (cos I was going to win hence I played my joker!!) knew that all 8 sections of the Fish Race was not going to be achieved but fair play to Dicky and Adam whom managed to get to 7, great effort. In fact Dicky did an Aurigny and got off to a flying start (bad analogy – meant did a Flybee!) and had 4 sections done in the first 20 minutes! Adams angling skills and knowledge have come on in leaps and bounds too and it is reflective in his match results – two firsts in 2 matches now! It’s not been a 5 minute ride neither, that’s 3 years of dedicated fishing the league, watching, learning and practising. Darren had to take comfort in third place whilst the rest of us were air miles behind with the wormies! Oh me – wasted Joker! Never had a fish till 5.30pm! Delusional! Match Results: 1st - Adam Salmon/Dicky Smith – 7 3rd – Darren Braby – 6 4th – Mike Bohan/James Clarke – 5 6th – Mark Harding – 4 7th - Andrew Black – 2 Breakwater Float Only Match A tricky start to this match as to whether it should be on or off but on it was and with some sort of gusto the 8 that attended applied their various skill sets to overcome the windy conditions. Float only was the rule which meant no lead weights hit the bottom and with various rigs hitting the horizons from some, others chose to concentrate on their first permitted 6 Wrasse. Quickly Mikey and Fieona got in to their strides and started to winkle out a mix of Ballads (sorry Ballans!) and Corkwings. As their tallies grew Dicky had manage to sort his multipurpose rig out to work but to no avail whilst Mark was trying his best to get a LSD on a dragged Hermit Crab. Meanwhile Adam could see none of this working and reverted to picking out his Wrasse one at a time as Mikey and Fie got to their maximum 6. They switched to Gar and Pollack tactics and then Wayne started to focus on his own and before you knew it he had 6 too. Dicky by now had long left his enormous float and multi tasked rig and concentrated on the Wrasse. Meanwhile Mark in between eating was still persevering with the Hermit Crab tactic. Soon though the food bag was empty and so was his card so having spotted Wayne quietly plucking away he made move and poached what Wayne couldn’t catch. Meanwhile Adam maxxed out his 6, Fie and Mikey were doing nothing and James was getting cold. After 90 minutes or so Mark maxxed out too on Wayne’s spot and returned to focus on the Gars and Pollack. It was all very quiet, Kim somehow managed to add a Shanny to her Wrasse, Fie and Mikey were doing nothing and James put his coat on, oh and added a couple more Wrasse. The final half hour and Wayne missed what appeared to be a Gar which inspired interest. Then a shout down the end and Dicky hauled up a Mackerel, the ‘poacher’ went down and nailed one of his own only then to walk away whilst Dicky nailed the match winning rarity a Gar. All good fun. Best fish was a 2lb 9oz Ballan Wrasse for Wayne. Match Results: 1st – Dicky Smith 227cm 2nd - Mark Harding 173cm 3rd – Adam Salmon 159cm 4th – Wayne Cosheril 145cm 5th - Mike Bohan 125cm 6th – James Clarke 124cm 7th – Fieona Cosheril 108cm 8th – Kim Le Poullain 35cm Next Match is on Saturday 23rd July fishing from 14.00 till 21.30. Booking in from 13.30 at Alderney Angling. Numbers are dwindling on last year so let’s see a good turnout. It’s the heaviest bag of Pollack, Mackerel, Garfish and Bass. Maximum 6 of each except Bass which is limited to 3 (subject to seeking clarification from Fisheries!). One rod and maximum of 3 hooks, treble counts as one hook. Roving match. Size limits apply – Mackerel 24cm, Garfish 55cm, Pollack 40cm and Bass 42cm.

League Table Top 3 remain the same and Darren’s lead barely touched, Dicky is the big benefactor and now in the top 4, having scored just 70 points in the first 6 matches he has stormed back with 490 points in the last 6 so if anyone out there thinking I am too far away think again – especially if you have jokers in hand. Top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and the winner of that will get to go to the Florida Keys!! (or if preferred a European destination). Best 14 matches from the 20 count. 1. Darren Braby 910

Sea Angling News, August 2016 SAMALITE LEAGUE CHESIL CENTRE, JULY 23RD, 7PM - MIDNIGHT. 72 HOUNDS AND 13 DIFFERENT SPECIES !!!!! The wind picked up a bit for this match from the west which made conditions choppy for the anglers that supported the competition. On arrival it was amazing to see the huge mackerel shoals the entire length of the beach with black clouds of whitebait in the water which were being washed ashore as the waves broke. With a 2.1m tide at 10pm we fished over the top of the tide and although slow to get going in a few areas plenty of fish and different species were coming in, even for the last hr as the tide totally eased off to a trickle the fish kept coming. The record of 43 smoothounds set in the May match at chesil centre was totally smashed and this time although smaller 72 hounds were caught ,measured and released, !! Other species recorded included, black bream, red gurnard, scad, dogfish, bull huss, conger, spotted ray, undulate ray, thornback ray, pout, poor cod, plaice. 13 species all sizeable , not many venues will produce that on an evening !! WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Chris Snow

have provided anglers with Flounders, bream, eels, scad, Smoothound, Rays and some large Bass have been captured mainly on live baits fished tight to the wall, best reported a 13lb beauty. Golden Grey Mullet are yet to make an appearance in any great numbers but next month should give a better opportunity although there are Thick and Thin lips in the Arun/Adur and Ouse ready to capture along with Eels and Flounders. At the moment there does seem to be something for every one from LRF and drop-shotting for the smaller species to live baiting for a specimen and long may it continue I say.

Throughout the county there has been some great fishing this month. The undulates still showing in numbers with a chop on the water favourable, they have been showing from Seaford through to Selsey and are now a realistic target to most anglers. Smoothound are now showing and seems to have coincided with the influx of the hook robbing spider crab. Best I have had reported is a 17lb 9oz Specimen from Ferring beach! There have been a number of Stingrays showing up to 25Lb on King Rag best venues seem to be to the west of the county. Aldwick, Clymping and Bognor have provided greater numbers. It would be nice to start a report without grumbling about the weather but as I write this we have just had another comp cancelled due to the NW winds that seem to be ever present in the bay of late with 6 out of 9 comps called off so far! A few local members have managed to sneak out when the wind drops enough but good forecasts at a weekend are rare. Still plenty of fish out there with the hounds finally arriving and now we are even allowed to retain a bass if were lucky enough to catch one. On the 2nd of July we held our summer bbq at the sailing club, lots of laughs, a live band and great food. It was good to catch up with members old and new, hopefully every one enjoyed it. Away from Burnham me and my brother joined a couple of friends on White Waters from west Wales after sharks. We weren't disappointed with 14 blues upto 110lb and another of 105lb. With 3 more trips booked for this year hopes are high of setting a new pb. Andy Georgiou towed his boat down to Weymouth along with Nigel Devey and they managed 7 species on a tough day topped off with a fine undulate of 18lb to Andy. On the same day we towed our boat down to West Bay spending the morning on the wrecks for just a few pout and cuckoo wrasse but saved the day inshore with some nice plaice, the best going to Craig Willis at around 2lb. Fish of the month for June was won by Andy Georgiou with a hound of 11lb 4oz and 73% on measure and release.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 15th September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

The next club competition is an away day at Weymouth on the 14th August followed by a smoothound comp at Burnham on the 28th.

Sea Angling News, August 2016

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by Dave Roberts

A fantastic period of settled weather has allowed the charter boats to provide their parties with some brilliant sport. Inshore, black bream have been taken in good numbers and though mainly small, fish to around three pounds have not been uncommon. Also good numbers of ballan wrasse and their various smaller cousins showing on inshore reef marks. Smoothounds still showing though not as prolific as they were, hardback crab is still favourite for these fish. Offshore grounds producing good conger, huss and some amazing sport with the tope. Grounds around Lundy seem to be alive with these sporty little sharks. On the wreck scene, Alykat anglers have accounted for many good pollack to well into double

figures along with one or two decent ling and the occasional cod. The clean water has remained making it a treat to be able to target these visual massive influx of mackerel seems to have subsided though they are still available on the smaller tides. The next few weeks should continue to show some great sport here in the Channel and with luck, Alykat will be heading down to the Western approaches in search of the blue sharks. We do have availability for individuals on the 18th August for a blue shark trip departing Ilfracombe at 0700hrs. If you are interested, contact me on 07764 150648 for details. MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Things have been rolling along steadily the past few weeks with a flurry of smoothounds, Ray's, bass and codling to name just a few species. In general things have been running hot and cold throughout the channel. It's only been a couple of weeks since last months report Perseverance payed of for Andy Stiling in as I'm off to Norway, so I don't the end with a nice have a great deal to mention. smoothound caught But the potential of some from Bossington good specimen hounds is highly likely on the neap tides before the end of the month and into August. Fishing the low water reef systems and Weston rock marks being the usual area to produce the goods . If targeting these smoothounds at these marks is too daunting, you can always opt for the easier venues like Porlock and Bossington where you could find a few smaller 5-10lb hounds hanging about. The Ray fishing should also continue for good bags

of thornback Rays from Blue Anchor to Weston and above. Small eyed and spotted ray will also be worthy target species from the sandy high and low water mark around Minehead. Bass numbers have increased with lots of small bass and a modest amount of 3-6lbers. Dunster beach and Minehead golf links beach giving a good chance if this is your target fish this month. There are plenty of other marks throughout the channel that produce bass, to many to mention though. Dover sole numbers seem to be healthy in the upper reaches around Portishead and above the bridges with those seeking them. The month ahead can be a funny old month in the channel with an abundance of food sources for many species. Rays, bass and the smoothounds will all be worth the effort, as will the sole. If you are keen to knock up a species count or a mixed bag of fish then Porlock and Bossington should tick your box as would Illfracombe harbour. I'll have leave it here for now and hopefully I will be able to make up for it next month. Anyway Tightlines & happy hunting folks...

WEST WIGHT / RESULTS

The fish to beat is 11lb 9oz caught and released by Southampton angler Kip Welch. Our last Bass trip,we managed to feather up two bins of live mackerel, things are looking up ! Inshore fishing, there is still plenty of sport to be had with Black Bream and Smoothounds. On the mid channel wrecks, fishing for Cod and Pollack has been steady. Our last wrecker we had the bonus of two Coal fish and a John Dory. Tight Lines John Skeggs (Last Laugh/Lymington)

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage The good news this month is that the Mackerel have arrived off the west wight, and through the Channel which is very good news for all. Last year they were only in the area for a few weeks then disappeared so lets hope they stay a lot longer this year. There has been a good variety of fishing around our area with the Solent producing some good double figure Sting Ray and Smoothound, this is the best time before the weed starts to break up and make the fishing very hard. The inshore marks are producing a heavy run of small Tope at the moment up to fifteen pounds, the numbers being caught are into double figures before the first cup of tea, so on some occasions we have to move to get away from them. Offshore the wrecking has been steady with some marks producing on different states of the bigger tides. Some of the local boats reported a couple days of poor catches mid channel which we put down to wind direction and tide, however over the same period a small earthquake of 3.5 on the Richter scale was reported on the north west coast of France (Also felt in the Channel Islands) which gives food for thought.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, August 2016

Port Report July saw the cod thinning out on the wrecks with just a handful coming aboard boats towards the end of the month. This year the cod season has been very different from last year when we were all thoroughly spoilt by the sheer numbers of the cod. This year the Weymouth ‘cod season’ has been more its expected length of mid-May to mid-July in comparison to lasts year’s mid April until the beginning of September. This season’s cod have been a much larger average size, have fought much harder and stayed close to the wrecks. We anglers enjoy hypothesising over the various reasons why fish do what they do and our conclusions are probably way off the mark but as this year’s cod are the survivors from last year then it is logical to think they have adapted their behaviour somewhat. The French trawlers work very tight to the wrecks and even go directly over some of them…..maybe the cod have learnt they have to stay tight to or inside the wrecks for their own protection from such activities. If you have ever dived a wreck and gone inside one then you will have seen tightly packed shoals of fish packed into the interior and can only imagine how difficult it would be to get them to take a lure and of they did to get the fish out of the tangled metal. It has indeed been a challenge this year but, for all that, some terrific cod fishing has been enjoyed. There have been some very large pollack into the 20lb range caught during the cod trips. This is unusual as we normally see much smaller pollack in the summer with boats having to cross the magic 50 degree line to find the bigger pollack from June onwards. July saw a number of outstanding specimen pollack taking lures and live eels. Anchoring sessions on the wrecks have been remarkably slow for conger. In mid July Weymouth hosted the EFSA Species event which this year targeted conger. We would expect to get 30 to 50 conger per boat but this year, apart from one Clem Carter’s Wild Frontier, all the boats struggled with only 12 to 16 eels per day per boat. Clem Carter chose a wreck which produced 50 odd conger on Day One and thus dominated the whole event thanks to this catch. The heaviest eel was just 67lb with the 2nd and third placed eels in the mid 50lb range. Very strange fishing. (And yes, every eel was returned). The wrecks have produced a good run of ling during the congering sessions. Ling continue to baffle skippers…. anglers always ask if there’s any about and would like to catch them but when they are found (and filleted for the customers by the crews) they are left on the boat and no-one wants them.

Turbot. Duchess II

EFSA event. The inshore fishing really comes into its own in August and for the remaining months. Bream catches will steadily improve with these rough ground marks also producing conger, huss, rays, smoothounds, gurnard and pout. The rough ground marks close to Portland and south of the Shambles plus the grounds to the west of Portland Bill can all produce this sort of variety with anchoring sessions proving the bulk of the fishing. The Shambles will see more turbot and brill and the occasional plaice can be expected. Plaice enthusiasts can take heart that there are some around but they are not in the normal areas and perseverance is required in order to be around when the plaice decide to feed.

Caroline with a double shot of turbot & brill. Duchess II

There will be more bass all over the place and charter skippers will be seen gnashing their teeth and bashing their heads against bulkheads when asked for the zillionth time why only one can be kept per person. The weather has been getting better and apparently we are going to see a nice week next week….let us hope settled conditions will be enjoyed throughout August and we all experience some good fishing together. Thank you to everyone for coming to Weymouth and supporting the Weymouth Charter Fleet with your custom. It IS much appreciated.

As we all know there are no bass left in the sea which is why the rod and line commercial lads say they have hit their monthly allowance within the first two weeks and charter boats are having to leave marks to get away from them. There’s currently a good run of bass in the 5lb to 8lb range and many anglers who still do not know about the restrictions look at us skippers in sheer hatred when we explain only one can be kept.

Inshore fishing offers lots of variety. There are turbot and brill on the Shambles Bank (plus plenty of bass) and bream moving in to the inshore Portland reefs (along with plenty of bass). The Race is very lively for….bass. There are no mussel beds left so the plaice fishing is non-existent in the west Shambles area and attempts to find any have resulted in…bass. Further to the west of Portland the Kidney Bank is fishing well for blonde rays into the mid 20lb range plus aan occasional turbot and, yes…you guess it…taking the pennel rigged squid baits are…bass!

Cod - Fish On II

Brill - Fish On II

The Stennis Ledges and the reefs off Wyke Regis and further west down to Abbotsbury are producing increasing amounts of bream, gurnard, a few cod, smoothounds, tope, conger and all the usual summer variety. Trips across to the Channel Islands have produced plenty of pollack on the offshore reefs, some really outstanding specimen brill from the many banks between Alderney and Guernsey along with a few reasonable turbot but a lot of undersized ones. Bream are just starting to show and the trips on the big tides have fulfilled the daily bass allowance. August is now upon us. There will be less wrecking for cod and pollack and more anchoring for the conger along with ling. The Weymouth Conger Festival is always an event to look forward to so lets hope it produces more eels than the

Sunday 3rd July and 'first timer' Daniel Aldred from Lindford, Hampshire, caught this fantastic pollack of 19lb 2oz. With the area D specimen weight for pollack set at 15lb Daniel's fish amounted to 126% of specimen weight.

FINS UP REPORT By Dan Clarke

Dan Clarke of 'fins up' fishing charters is one of the 'new generation' of skippers operating from Portland Marina that was host to the 2012 Olympic Games. The marina is new and vibrant with great facilities. Freeparking, toilets, bar, restaurant and trolleys to name but a few. Also Dan has the closest mooring to the marina entrance so it's just a short walk to the boat from the car. As well as putting anglers on the fish Dan also knows how much his customers matter. He is not simply a taxi driver to the fishing grounds but the creator of an experience. Offshore wrecking this month has been throwing up some better sized cod but unfortunately not in the same numbers as last year. I have been asking anglers to beef their tackle to heavier rods and heavier braid to try and get the big cod out of the wrecks. I have seen so many Snap offs this year it's been unbearable for me and frustrating for the anglers. The pollock fishing as been exceptional this year. We have seen some great specimen summer pollock with our best weighing in at a respectable 19lb. The ling are thick on some wrecks with fish taking lures and dead baits fished at slack water over the wreck. We also have some great

bass fishing available just a short steam from the Marina with our quota being easily filled on most trips. The Shambles Bank is throwing up plenty of smaller flat fish with a few sizable ones amongst them. It's been good to see the black bream now showing inshore. The best of them being caught using individual squid bait with small hooks and paternoster style rigs with coloured beads. These can be great fun when targeted using light gear. Having had lots of new anglers aboard it's refreshing to still see new techniques and tactics which have quite often paid off. For example Pennel rigs and long traces seem to be working well for turbot and brill. There are plenty of mackerel about which is nice to see for a change as these have been very sporadic in previous years. Fresh mackerel flappers attracting tope in numbers along with congers, undulate rays and smalleyed rays. The weather during July has been kind to us with very few trips cancelled. Hopefully this will continue Into the second half of the year.

FISHING CAR BOOT SALE HAILED A SUCCESS By Adam James

Mineheads first fishing car boot sale at the 20 acre site. The first fishing car boot sale was held at the 20 acre site on the outskirts of Minehead this Sunday (24th). Despite the dismal weather forecast sellers from far and wide attended the event. The drizzly conditions on the day didn't deter the many hardy angling folk from coming to the sale with over 20 stalls selling a wide range of fishing gear from salt & fresh water to vintage and antique reels. Organiser James Wigglesworth was made up that so many sellers and customers had attended and he

hoped that the event would grow and become a regular fixture in the Southwest's angling calender. To enquire about this and other future fishing events contact James Wigglesworth at james@ seaanglingnews.com

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 25

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand

The last couple of weeks have been for many, including myself, frustrating and one of the hardest months of the year on the mighty big beach. Although the month had started well with lots of top end single and lower end double Smooth hounds running the full lengh of the beach from the Cove End all the way to Seatown, which is a cracking standard for Chesil with most fish falling to crab baits on a pulley pennel at all ranges, which offers everyone a chance. Please beware when fishing for these beautiful sport fish, always use your ratchet or runner as the initial run will remove your rods for the rest and if you have ever had a run from a hound you will know what I mean! The first few weeks of the month the number of plaice were seen to decrease from all the favourite fishing spots, including Cogden, Bexi and Hive beach. To be fair I haven't attempted fishing for them this month and will wait for the bigger fish to show in the next few weeks. I am also yet to hear of any good sessions on the plaice with most anglers still struggling with the spider crabs. Losing hooks for fun, unless you use a braid snood to stop the critters sniping you hooks, ends up becoming a frustrating task. Lots of anglers targeting plaice at the shallow beaches have also had lots of hounds taking Rag & Lug bait while using Size 2 & Size 4 hooks, but even those hounds have swam to new waters. The last couple of weeks have been truly disappointing for many anglers, myself included. I did manage a 15 hour session at the cottages, where I invited fellow angler James Wigglesworth, from Minehead with the promise of Hounds, Bream & Gurnard. Unfortunately the session was turned out to be one I would like to forget! With just 5 bites between 6 rods and a catch of just 2 Dogs, 2 Bootlace Congers and 1 tiny Tub Gurnard,we spent many hours bait changing and a

wasted effort for very little reward. Ferrybridge has seen the odd Gurnard and Bream, but we are yet to see figures equalling previous years. Now for some positive reading, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the line! The Mackerel have started to show first light and last knocking. I'm a strong believer that when the bait fish show its only a matter of time before the fishing picks up naturally. So that being said, the next few weeks should really see more of an improvement and hopefully, become one of the best months of the year with bigger Plaice by day and Sole by night from Cogden, Bexi and all the shallow beach marks. Also along with the increasing numbers of mackerel, there is a great chance of a big double figure Bass along many marks with a mackerel head in the gutter, especially when there is a little chop on the water. Do remember while fishing for Bass in close, avoid shining head lamps onto the water. A glimmer of light is enough to put this tricky little bars of silver off! And remember, we are still only allowed to take one home for the table!

Callum Chandler with a 8lb Turbot. Caught off fresh mackerel from the night before. The fish was caught and safely returned to fight another day.

Gary Cook with a 3lb Black Bream from Ferrybridge while in a club match.

The big Undulate Rays have started showing, so don't be surprised to pick up a double figured one whilst Plaice fishing or on fresh fish bait fished at 70ish yards on a pulley pennel. Though it has been a little quiet, there have still been some fantastic catches and a few anglers have landed some top specimens. Thank you for sending me all your reports and photos. We make our own luck, but remember to stay safe....... Tight lines

An error occurred in recording the final results which led to Ireland being awarded team gold. When calculating the final results, the Ireland team score was recorded as 16 points on day 1 instead of 15. The Wales score was recorded as 15 points when in fact it should have been 16 points.

The Angling Trust would like to express its deep regret that this error occurred and offer sincere apologies to the Irish and Welsh Ladies' teams and to all others who took part in the event.

Both the Irish and Welsh teams' true score over the two-day competition was 28 points and countback should have been used to determine the winner. Countback would have resulted in Wales being

Rock goby

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO As I sit here writing this with the blazing sunshine and not a breath of wind in the air outside I can’t help but think back to last year. These days tended to be on weekends rather than the sort when you're trapped at work dreaming about rock gobies and corking wrasse. My most visited venue last year on these beautiful days was the beautiful Torbay area in South Devon. I would usually start my excursion wandering the rocks of Berry Head using 3g Hto jig heads with a various selection of soft plastics mounted in them, my favourite being the black knightworm. The thicker wire of the HTO jighead meant I could bully the abundance of decent (1lb-3lb) ballan wrasse enough to keep them out of there snaggy dens. The sharpness and the fairly small gape also let the smaller corkwing and goldsinny wrasse interrupt my ballan bashing. Once I had had enough of losing tackle due to poor casting and not being quick enough to stop the brutal ballans finding their favourite leader shredding ledge I would head over to Torquay just twenty minutes or so across the bay. This is where my faithful dropshotted isome would find itself being lowered inbetween and just over the rock cladded peir infront of the aquarium. And although the aquarium is very well

stocked, the waters at the front of it seem to be full of fish also with an almost infinite number of species being reported from these rocks. By far the most common seem to be the battle scarred corkwings with the odd ballan, goldsinny and rockcook providing a nice variety of wrasse. Other species include long spined scorpion fish, tompot and common blennies and a whole variety of gobies. This area has been known to throw up the odd topknot in the past as well. With the aroma wafting from the numerous fish and chipshops reminding me that I can’t stay wondering the rocks all day it's time to go get myself a portion and we'll basically feed most of them to the monstrous mullet that stay within the safety of the “No Fishing“ area of the marina. Princess pier is my last destination for the day after picking up my “not so” cool box from my van. This is where the tubular tip of my HTO Rock Rover and the HTO shore jigs snare any mackerel, garfish and pollack that inhabit the upper layers of the Torbay area.
