www.snowbee.co.uk Bass Charter Fishing Fleet Calls On Minister To Get Rid Of The Bass Nets And Save Livelihoods With Fairer Deal For Recreational Anglers Owners of the UK’s charter fishing boats have called on the fisheries minister, George Eustice, to give his full support to EU proposals which would mean a fairer deal for anglers when the 2017 bass fishing opportunities are agreed by ministers in December. Last year Mr Eustice angered Britain's 800,000 sea anglers by caving into pressure and agreeing to restrict members of the public angling recreationally for publicly-owned bass stocks whilst increasing catching opportunities for those fishing commercially. Charter boats are projected to lose approximately £2.8m in bookings over the course of 2016 – approximately 50 per cent of the value of all recorded bass landed commercially into the UK. Anglers spend up to £600 a day chartering specialist bass fishing trips but bookings have been down as a result of the disproportionately restrictive measures banning anglers from retaining any bass for the first six months of the year, and then limiting them to just one fish per day for the remainder of 2016. Ian Noble, Chairman of the Professional Boatman’s Association (PBA), which represents many of the UK’s charter boat operators, has written to the Minister calling on him to support the livelihoods and businesses of charter boats by backing the European Commission’s proposals for bass fishing opportunities in 2017 including limiting commercial fishing to hooks and lines only, introducing a two-month closed period to protect spawning bass and agreeing a fairer and more flexible monthly bag limit for recreational fishing. In his letter Mr Noble writes, “The UK’s charter fishing fleet contributes many millions of pounds to the UK economy and to many coastal communities by providing a service to recreational sea anglers. Businesses, like my own, are reliant on members of the public choosing to go angling recreationally for publicly-owned sea fish. We are small businesses, just like the under10m fleet, whose livelihoods are reliant on fishing opportunities. However, we believe that no consideration was given to our sector when the 2016 EU fishing opportunities were agreed. It is essential that a fairer deal is reached for the recreational angling and charter boat sectors in 2017." The decline in bookings has also affected other businesses in coastal communities who rely on visiting anglers. “Anglers may fish for leisure but it's a leisure activity that is highly valuable and one on which many small businesses and jobs depend.”

This months Snowbee prize winner is Nigel Bowditch who bagged this fantastic 58lb 3oz tope from the shore.

David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “No one from government thought to consider how the very restrictive measures for recreational angling in 2016 were going to impact charter boats. Now that they are aware of the damaging impact it has had on the livelihoods of many people living in the UK’s coastal communities fairer and more flexible measures that support small business owners operating charter boats must be delivered by the fisheries minister for 2017.”

ANGLING TRUST - NO SUPPORT FOR SEA ANGLING 2017 DATA COLLECTION

Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club.

The Angling Trust will not be supporting a government backed-project to collect catch data from recreational sea anglers over the course of 2017.

RECREATION TRIP- POOLE

Sea Angling 2017 has been commissioned by Cefas (the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science) and will build on the results of similar data collection exercises carried out in 2012 and 2016. The project is designed to fulfil EU requirements for the UK to provide data on recreational catches for a number of species listed under the Common Fisheries Policy’s Control Regulation and Data Collection Framework. Anglers will be asked to use log books detailing their catches over the course of 2017. Earlier this year the Angling Trust stated that its contribution to any future data collection exercise would be dependent on two factors: A) Extensive improvements being made in the collection of accurate landings/fishing mortality data from all sources – not just recreational sea anglers; B) Policy decisions being evidence-based and reflecting the social, environmental and economic impacts of all sectors in a balanced and proportionate way. To date we have been provided with no evidence to suggest that either of these have been addressed and the Angling Trust’s Conservation & Access Group, which advises on marine fisheries policy, has been left with no option but to maintain the position to withhold support for Sea Angling 2017 until such a time that sufficient effort has been made to address the conditions set out above. It was hoped that the results of a sampling project carried out by Cefas to sample the extent and impact of unrecorded landings by the Under10m fleet would have provided the evidence required for the Angling Trust to consider future participation in catch data by recreational anglers. However, the report has yet to be published. In addition, an audit by the EU Commission into the UK’s data collection and reporting from the Under10m fleet is still in progress. The Angling Trust withheld its support for this year’s project, Sea Angling 2016, on the grounds that, despite evidence being collected as a result of multiple projects over many years – Net Benefits (2004), Invest In Fish South West (2005), Drew Associates report (2007), Sea Angling 2012, Defining The Economic and Environmental Values of Sea Bass (2014) – the

government has consistently failed to incorporate any of the findings or recommendations into its marine resources management policies thereby depriving the recreational sea angling sector of fair and proportional consideration. The results of the first data collection exercise, Sea Angling 2012, were used to justify the EU 2016 fishing opportunities decision for bass which saw recreational anglers banned from retaining bass for six months of the year followed by a one-fish-per-day bag limit for the remainder of 2016. This was based on the assertion that recreational sea anglers were responsible for 30 per cent of total bass fishing mortality. However, illegal, unreported and unregulated landings of bass from other sources remain unknown meaning the impact of recreational fishing is suspected to be massively over-estimated. In addition, trust between recreational sea anglers and Defra was further damaged when Defra stated at the launch of Sea Angling 2012 that, “If Sea Angling 2012 and similar surveys in Europe highlight circumstances where anglers should play an important role in conserving vulnerable or overexploited stocks, Defra would seek to agree voluntary measures to avoid having controls imposed from Brussels”. However, a year after the report was published the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, went on to agree controls on recreational anglers imposed by the European Council. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “It’s with regret that we currently feel forced to withhold our support for the Sea Angling 2017 project. We do, in principle, support the accurate collection of data provided it is from all sources including all commercial fishing sectors as well as angling.

Eight members fished aboard Strongbow, skippered by Dick Peckham on the 13th of November 2016. Given the extremely large tides predicted, Dick opted to start the day on a deep water mark near to the shingles, allowing the anglers to fish relatively light. This produced bites from the off from dogfish and pout, however, it was Chris Ellis who boated the first good fish of the day with a lovely cod of 10lb 1oz which gave him a good workout on light gear. Coincidently, whilst playing the cod to the net, Pete Drodge also hooked into a very large fish which refused to be brought up and eventually spat the hook- a real shame. Shortly afterwards it was Arran Harmer’s time to shine by boating a fine bass weighing 9lb 6oz which gave a very good account of itself and made the long trip East very worthwhile. As the northerly wind picked up, a move was made to Christchurch ledge where birds were seen working the water. Members wasted no time in fishing a variety of lures and feathers and before long an array of species were soon coming aboard including a handful of bass, stunning ballan wrasse to 1lb 14oz, pollack to 3lb, garfish and mackerel. A final move was made yet closer to shore to try for plaice and squid as the day drew to a close near to Boscombe pier, and despite several plump plaice being caught, the squid remained elusive even after dark. Overall a great day was had by all with a wide variety of species seen throughout the day. Dates for next years recreation trips can be found in forthcoming newsletters or by contacting Robin Lane on 07876 471901.

However, we made it very clear earlier this year what the conditions were for us to support any future data collection exercise. Unfortunately, no attempt has been made to seriously address these conditions and until there is we will not be encouraging sea anglers to participate in catch data collection. Government and its agencies seem to recognise that there are serious deficiencies in landings data from commercial fisheries but apparently aren’t willing to do anything to address them. In the meantime, catches by recreational anglers get closely scrutinised and used to disproportionately restrict members of the public fishing for publicly-owned fish stocks.”

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke Something very weird has happened in the north Thames estuary and I can't quite get my head around it, we still have no cod to talk of in our part of the world at the moment and its getting worrying, ok we have had good and bad years but never this bad the east coast was always the place to go for a few cod!!! So what's happened. The talk was by the powers that know that the north sea was full of cod after years of restricted fishing I think they need to check that out again, they stopped us catching and keeping bass this year but we had the best bass fishing in years, how much are they paying these people these boffins that sit in front of a desk with the occasional foray out to sea on the million pound fishery boats paid for by us, checking out the biomasses the spawning the feed the cockles Etc Etc Etc. A net fishing boat from Harwich returned to port the other day after a ten day trip catching three cod, three, in November crazy but he did have a box full of bonito tuna!!!!! This time last year we were filling boxes with beautiful prime cod, maybe it's too warm still and the bonanza is yet to come watch this space. After reading this you may assume it's not worth a trip

to the east coast, not a bit of it, fishing is still very good with plenty of rays to catch tons of good whiting several doggy's a few flatties the odd bass, so you will be kept busy out on the boats and you can still expect the odd cod in fact we had one yesterday 16th November however I know that its cod anglers really want but we only post the truth no bull on this report. The river Black water is full of fish equally as good as any were offshore so you can still get a good days fishing in no matter how hard the wind blows saving cancelled trips, it's a god forsaken job of organising a party for anglers only to have it cancelled last minuet so the Black water is a god send and you are catching exactly the same as you would be if you was fishing off the Essex coast, I know some anglers are not happy unless the charter boat has burned hundreds of litres of fuel or can still see the coast line but it's all in the mind !!! in fact I can tell you what you will catch ten miles out this time of year lesser spotted dog fish and it's a fact that fish move in closer in the winter because that's where the food is, so don't get despondent enjoy the fact that your fishing in calm water catching some nice fish with a few friends away from the Mrs.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 5

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

Well over the past few months I seem to keep predicting that the fishing will kick-off anytime soon and the following month’s report will be filled with multiple captures of large Cod, Eels etc. I have always said that when I started to write these reports I would make sure that they are honest and on that basis I have to say that the shore fishing in the Plymouth area has been very poor (no, its’ been pants)! As I write this latest report the temperatures are starting to fall dramatically and I’ve literally just received a message from Mark Bryce of Rodbenders SAC confirming the capture of a cracking pouting of 2-5 from the River Tamar. Having also lost a tidy eel during the same session we can only hope that this is the Tamar finally starting to stir into life. Fingers crossed! One of the captures of the month has to be Rob Wheaton’s open coast eel of 41lb 2oz expertly gaffed by the old timer himself Mike Hodge. This fish was returned after weighing and puts The General firmly in pole position in terms of Rodbenders SAC Specimen Hunter of the Year Award. Nice one Rob and glad to see your still doing your bit for the elderly care in the community scheme. One of the positives during the past month is the reported capture of a number of flounder from the Kingsbridge Estuary with sessions of up to 8-9 fish per person. Although I have heard of unconfirmed reports of fish of up to 2-13 having been caught, most of the fish being reported are quite small at present between 1-8 and 2lb. However seeing so many fish in the estuary so early in the season suggests that perhaps we may be in for a good flounder season this year, especially if we get the colder winter that’s being

predicted. If you are thinking of trying Kingsbridge I would recommend tides between 4.8m and 5.0m on the Plymouth scale. Worm (and in particular maddies) are the best bait although crab does work in some of the deeper channel areas. Marks in Frogmore Creek will prove popular on the slightly larger tides whilst the main channel around Tackett Wood is worth a go on smaller neap tides. Make sure you fish as long as you can as fish can be caught as late as 5 hours after high tide in these deeper channel areas. The top specimen of the most recent round of the Plymouth Shore League was a cracking wrasse of 6-9 from Tom Roe of Roving Rods SAC whilst Mike O’Donnell of the Stonehouse C Team registered a good whiting of 1-14. As the temperatures drop I would expect to see more good whiting being registered by local club anglers. Whilst a shadow of its’ former self, Hairy Ledge on Brixham’s Berry Head can produce big whiting although please ensure you go with someone who has fished the mark before and make sure you take a rope as the decent can be tricky in the dark and wet. An easier mark to fish is Devils Point although generally the large whiting don’t start to show here until late Dec/early Jan when there is a good chance of getting a 2lb+ fish. On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 confirmed that when they have been able to get out to sea (which hasn’t been too often due to the recent bad weather) they have been finding some good fish on the wrecks. As we go into late Dec/early Jan we should start seeing some of the heavyweight pollack from the wrecks.

Cod - Valkyrie

Eighteen people attended the England boat squad weekend at West Mersea on 22nd/23rd October 2016. Fishing took place over 2 days aboard Stuart and Scott Belbin's boats Razorbill and Galloper. The weather was kind for the duration of the weekend with the boats anchoring for everyone to fish comfortably several miles offshore.

Several hundred fish were caught and released including 50 thornback rays to about 8lb in weight.

The fishing was very good with the predominate species being whiting. To add a bit of spice to the fishing they also encountered thornback ray and a few dogfish. The rays were about in numbers and razorbill had more than 100 over the two days.

Results

The first day saw anglers organised into 4 teams and "practicing" for a match on the next day. The idea was to share information and learn as much as possible from each other. A demonstration from Mark Smith on how to prepare mussels for bait was also shown to all in attendance.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

Other than a couple of late trips to chase the flatfish around we have started to concentrate our efforts on the inshore cod fishing around the Needles, Isle of White. The flattie trips were much later than I’ve ever bothered with before but both produced high numbers of fish up into the 20’s. Not all monsters, as you may expect for so late in the year, but good fun on the light gear with the best turbot going 8lb and the best brill 6lb 4oz. Over to the east of Poole the cod have started to arrive in numbers with the best day producing 6 fish to 18lb 8oz. Apart from a few spotted rays and tiny strap congers the mixed fish have been fairly thin on the ground compared to past years, until today that is when we returned over 30 eels between 10 and 40lb. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, although

they aren’t everyone’s favourite thing to catch it does ensure that people change their baits regularly when they are getting mauled every 10 minutes. A new addition to our winter cod trips has been the squid fishing in Poole Bay which has produced some massive squid up to 6lb. You tend to need the right conditions for them to feed but, depending on your preference, they either make great bait or a tasty bit of dinner. This next neap tide should hopefully see some bigger cod arrive, you never know when that monster might show up. Remember we are running our usual offer that the first person to catch a 30lb+ inshore cod this winter gets a free trip to Cherbourg in 2017. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Local angler Clive Morgan celebrated his 65th birthday on board the Mistress Linda with a party including a cake topped with sparkling candles and celebratory toasts, during the trip both Dave Colcough and Ian Napier landed a Cod each amongst lots of strap Congers, Whiting and small Mackeral. The water temp needs to drop another degree or two to get the best of the winter species. At present the best of the Cod fishing has been over at the Isle of Wight marks. Ron Hawkins from Thatcham caught his 1st ever Turbot weighing 14lb 4 ozs during a trip fishing for Whiting, the superb fish took a small piece of mackeral on a size 1/0 hook, he only called for the net when the fish surfaced his comments were that he did not shout for the net as he thought he was tangled up again with the angler next to him. Ringwood & Armfield angler Mike Hartley set a new PB and club record landing an Allis Shad 2lb 6ozs whilst Cod fishing, the fish was weighed and returned alive within a few seconds of being landed as these fish are on the endangered species list. Fishing along the shores both Mistress Linda and Strongbow have been catching plenty of Plaice to the 3lb mark along with Bream Gurnards, lots of small

Mackeral and a few small Codling, several boats have as the evening sets in fished for Squid with some in the 2 to 3 Kg class being caught. Poole Harbour has produced lots of small Bass which are taking baits quicker than the Flounders can get there, the upper reaches of the Harbour in the shallow water and Holes Bay will produce the better Flounder fishing with fish possibly up in the 4lb class being landed. 1st Poole Charter boat to land a Tuna, Fred Smith owner and skipper of Sea Wolf who on a busman’s holiday left Poole in the early hrs to proceed to Cornwall, on arrival he immediately hit into a Tuna and after a 35 minute battle he landed it weighing in at approx 250lb, over the next 2 days he hooked into 2 more fighting 1 big fish for over 3hrs before the hook hold gave way. It was sad to see the famous Poole based charter boat ‘True Blue’ moving on to another port but we all wish Steve Porter every success with his new boat which may arrive just in time for Christmas what a great present or early in the new year. RESULTS

Sea Angling News, December 2016 NWASAC Final round of NWASAC Summer League, Sun 23.10.16, Maddock & Town Hall Banks, Wallasey (23 rods). The two low water Mersey banks either side of the Beehive promontory in Egremont offered modest catches for most with overall winner, Mike Flanagan the exception with 431 cms of measure and release fish. There was a very close finish in the league; Bill Lindfield scored enough points to beat his wife (and fellow international) Heather and joint runnerup Steve Trish. (The next occasion upon which the Lindfields will fish the same venue will be the FIPS World Championships in Wexford starting on November 12th. They will make history as the first husband and wife to fish this annual event.)

With the Commodore Cup up for grabs for the largest conger of the day, Arthur decided that one final move would be made out to approximately 3 miles south of the Needles to try and find one. Sadly the larger fish remained absent for the remainder of the day; however, Club President- Derek Smith landed the target species, although not quite sizeable. In the last few minutes of the competition Alec Harmer managed an early season spurdog to increase his species count for the day and win the match.

Pairs Championship (gross scores): 1. Edwards/ Waugh, 291. 2. L. & S. Trish, 274. 3. Hopkinson/Dorling, 270

Despite a tough day’s fishing, pout, dogfish, whiting, tub gurnard, plaice, dab, spurdog, conger and smoothhound were caught. 1st Alec Harmer 100 points (winner of the RNLI cup); 2nd Harry Gray 88 points; 3rd Jane Hopkins 85 points; 4th Malcolm Gerrish 67 points; 5th Brian Dawkins 56 points; 6th Robin Lane 55 points; 7th Derek Smith 54 points; 8th Arran Harmer 34 points; 9th Roland Blomfield 33 points; 10th Nelson Phillips 14 points.

NWASAC Match Report: 9th Round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2016, Sun 30.10.16, Rock Channel, New Brighton (17 rods). A calm evening provided pleasant fishing conditions and a variety of species including some good plaice over low water. John Waugh’s landed the only sizeable codling of the match and this helped him to a win which consolidated his championship lead, winning the golden peg jackpot in the process. Dabs, whiting and small codling made up the bulk of the catches plus a single dogfish, landed by Lancaster's Dave Hutchinson, in the closing stages. As we head towards the final match at Perch Rock, it is looking good for last year’s series runner-up, John Waugh. 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 7 dabs, 3 plaice, 2 codling, 2 whiting, 1 flounder, 395 pts. (Zone B). 2. Steve Crowder (Wallasey), 6 plaice, 3 dabs, 2 codling, 321 pts (Zone A). 3. LDSFC Large Boat Competition 30/10/2016 Ten members fished the Club’s October large boat competition aboard “Private Venture” skippered by Arthur Savage. The weather, having scuppered the last 2 competitions, was ideal for once and a light easterly wind allowed a variety of marks to be fished. Following the success of a recent recreation trip, members opted to try for plaice at the start of the day and within a few hours a number of nice plump plaice were boated by Jane Hopkins and Robin Lane as well several splendid tub gurnards. As the tide eased the decision was made to head to deeper water to try for early cod and whiting. Unfortunately thoughts of cod did not materialise; however, this was soon forgotten as it was evident that the whiting were hungry and Alec Harmer led the way

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Early November was generally very mild despite predominantly easterly winds that are not often productive fish wise. Anglers have enjoyed sport with bass, grey mullet and smoothound all species that would once have been considered fish of summer and early autumn. Liam Stevens fished a beach on a night when a super moon illuminated the night and was rewarded with a fine bass of 7lb 12oz. Jeremy Johnson sent me a report of a cracking day on his friend Robert Hurst’s rib targeting bass on the lure. They were not sure of conditions so they decided at the last minute to change their minds from an early cod session up channel, to a bass session off Clovelly. This proved a wise move as they landed 10 bass including a personal best on the lure for Jeremy – (weight unconfirmed as the fish was released and had no scales but was certainly larger than an 8lb fish Jeremy had a couple of months back) they also had a perfect conditioned 6lb and 4lb bass and several round the 2-3lb mark.

field of 25 seniors and 4 juniors. Josh Atkinson won the competition with a fine flounder of 2lb 105/8oz. In second and third was James Atkinson with flounder of 2lb 75/8oz and 2lb 63/8oz. junior winner was Nalani Knox with flounder weighing 2lb 4oz and 1lb 101/4oz. The River Taw has been producing a few good catches of flounder though bait robbing crabs and finger bass can be frustrating. Dennis Toleman secured victory in Triple Hook Clubs RBL Shield with a flounder of 1lb 65/8oz. In runner up spot was Mark Beer with a flounder of 1lb 45/8oz. Some good fish have been tempted from rock marks with conger, huss and tope the main target species. Kyle Bishop landed a specimen bull huss weighing 12lb 5oz whilst on a trip to a local rock mark where Dan Spearman also enjoyed success landing a fine pollock of 4lb 7oz and a plump pouting of 1lb 2oz. Ross Stanway was rewarded with a fine tope of 34lb 1oz. The fish was tempted using half a mackerel presented on 8/0 Sakuma Manta extra hooks.

Olie Passmore - Pollock

Wayne Thomas - grey mullet 4lb 14oz

Chay Boggis landed a personal best smoothound of 10lb 3oz. The fish was tempted using a whole dirty squid hook bait. Ben Partridge went out after the tope and thought he was into one when the clutch screamed off, turned out to be a decent smooth hound weighing 9lb 2oz. A few years ago Combe Martin SAC member John Shapland set out to catch fifty sea species in a season and succeeded. Knowing Johns keenness on species hunting I felt sure he would excel in a one-day species competition held by Combe Martin SAC and so it proved. The bitterly cold North Wind that was forecast deterred the vast majority of club members who had shown an interest in the event with just four of us eventually venturing out. John elected to fish an estuary mark and Ilfracombe Pier and from the two venues caught an amazing eleven species including bass, sand goby, flounder, common blenny, scorpion fish, pollock, sand smelt, ballan wrasse, pouting, poor cod, rock goby and poor cod.

ALDERNEY

ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding Shore Sport It’s been hard to gauge what’s out because if the lads aren’t away fishing exotic destinations like Lanzarote and such banging out massive Rays then they’ve been squidding. I have never seen so many squid as we have done the last few weeks with bags of 30 – 0 common place – who said there is a squid shortage!! Lure fishing for the Bass is still productive with plenty of fish falling to surface lures. My own efforts have resulted in bags of 8 fish but not big fishies, best around 3lb this month but sure there’ll be bigger out there. At times there is some good Pollack fishing to be had too with fish to 6lb caught and reported. Several Rays reported, both Small Eyeds and Undulates caught – guess what they’re eating? Yep, Alderney squid! Reports of Tope being caught but it’s hard to cut through some of the utter rubbish being talked about but yes Tope have been caught and provide great sport. Every time Huss are targeted too they seem to get caught so plenty of those about and the odd decent Conger too, lots of small straps about. Worms not producing much, just the odd red Mullet and od Sole around. Black Bream not so full on as they were. Plenty of Thick Lipped Mullet about just waiting for someone to target them! Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – 24 Hours Heaviest Bag Fishing was way tougher than expected with Black Bream, Mullet and Bass dominating the weigh in for the 12 competitors. Easterly winds have taken the brunt of the blame as night time fishing was non-existent and for those putting in the hours for the full match with no sleep reward was scant. Better was much deserved! That’s fishing though, sad faces at the weigh in as those leading the pack were scrabbling for points to maintain their positions and those trying to catch wanted to outdo their competitors! So, it’s fun still, even if more than a little frustrating. Best fish of the match was a close-run thing though with Andy Black and guest Daniel Curgenven both with a decent enough bass separated by mere drams – Dan just pipping the ‘Bass’ man! Great to see the girls in the top 6 too!! Match Results: 1st –– Mark Harding – 4 Bass, 6 Black Bream - 16lb 7oz 2nd –– Dan Curgenven – 2 Bass, 6 Black Bream - 16lb 4oz 3rd – Wayne Cosheril – 6 Black Bream, 1 Thick Lipped 13lb 6oz 4th – Michael Bohan – 6 Black Bream, 1 Thick Lipped 12lb 11oz 5th – Fieona Cosheril – 4 Black Bream, 1 Bass - 7lb 5oz 6th – Kim Le Poullain – 4 Black Bream, 2 Pout, 2 Scad 5lb 14oz 7th – Dicky Smith – 2 Black Bream, 1 Garfish – 4lb 9oz 8th –– James Clarke – 1, Thick Lipped, 1 Garfish – 4lb 9th – Andy Black – 1 Bass – 3lb 12oz 10th – Alistair Walters- 2 Black Bream 2lb 13oz 11th – Scott Audoire – 4 Pout – 2lb 4oz A little wait now till the next match which is on Saturday 19th November. It’s the Worm Only Match!! I did offer Aurigny the opportunity to sponsor this one but they ‘refused to comment’!! Fishing is from 14.30 till 22.00. Booking in from 14.00 at Alderney Angling. Nominated species with size limits are: Red Mullet 27cm, Bass 42cm, Sole 34cm, Plaice 30cm, Black Bream 30cm, Couches Bream 27cm. Maximum two of each fish. Heaviest weight. Roving event. Weigh in. Two rods, max 4 hooks. League Table After this match there is very little change, limited pressure put on Dicky by Mikey and Wayne as they gained points but probably not enough. Scott’s challenge has taken a serious dent, on a match all thought he would do well he unfortunately bombed but three good results and a joker to play – who knows? Cat out the bag, Dicky can’t fish the last three ;-) There you go, a little bit of pressure added J! Top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and the winner of that will get to go to the Florida Keys!! (or if preferred a European destination). Best 14 matches from the 20 count. Fieona and Dan had Bass on the surface lures, like peas in a pod! Lanzarote Trip As mentioned a couple of the local lads headed further south to the beautiful island of Lanzarote. It’s a venue they have been headed to for a few years now and boy did they capitalise on the knowledge they’d built up. The lure fishing is always hard work but rewards are exciting when it is on with Blue Fish to 9lb+, Bonito’s to 7lb, Bass, Barracudas and Garfish to 3lb 8oz! The Bonitos run incredibly hard and are great fun catching. The other thing they like to do, if they can drag themselves away from the bars, is to spend the evenings fishing for Rays – Sting Rays! Several were caught on this trip including one that gang leader Darren Braby and Adam Salmon could not get out of the water which estimated at 200lb+. They also had several beautiful Butterfly Rays, an Angel Shark, some other unidentified shark, a very rare White Skate and more. Great holiday and easy for you UK guys to get too. Enjoy the pictures.

20th TEIGNMOUTH SEA ANGLING SOCIETY 2016 NATIONAL FLOUNDER SHORECHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 November Supported by the main sponsors :Dunraven Windows, Bridgend, South Wales, Civil Solutions, Newton Abbot. and Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Anyfish Anywhere, Plymouth angler Nick Green was the winner of the 20th National Two Day Flounder Championships, with a Specimen fish of 2lb 12.8oz, caught on the Saturday. He collected the £1000 first prize plus £184 pool. The Junior Section was won by Jack Cockram from Dawlish with a fish weighing 1lb 10.6oz, and he collected Tackle prize s to the value of £300 The National Flounder Championships retains its popularity, good weather conditions and excellent prize table ensured an entry of 207 seniors and 11 Juniors, but although many fish, were brought to the scales, the expected and in recent years elusive fish of over 3 lbs, did not show. However whatever the expectations, a flounder of 2lbs 12.8oz caught by regular competitor, Nick Green is a cracking fish and well worthy of the top award. The Championship from its inception has always been fished with conservation of the species in mind and all but a few fish were returned alive to the river and those kept were donated for the table. The success of these Championships is in no small way down to the excellent backing of the sponsors “Anyfish Anywhere,” Civil Solutions Ltd and Dunraven Windows. The prizes - £1000 first place, and £250 day prizes for both Saturday and Sunday, and good

quality tackle prizes down to 10th place on both days of the championship represents a total value of over £4000. The presentations were held at the Lifeboat Station and made by Ted Tuckerman who needs no introduction having been involved with angling nationally and in the west country for more than 60 years.. The 20th donation for £250 was made by the TSAS Chairman David Rowe to the Teignmouth RNLI which was received by their representative Steve Brock.

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association By Richard Saxby

As I write this there is a definite wintery feeling with the first frosts and temperature's not getting much above 8 degrees. After a promising start to the cod season they seem to have disappeared. On Sunday the 30th October 10 boats and 24 anglers fished the Tony Holly trophy fished as a best specimen. The weather was reasonable and boats fished from Brean to Blue Anchor and most places in between. Fishing was a bit tough but species caught were thornies, conger, dogs, whiting a bull Huss and codling. Winner was Mike Sheppard with a Huss of 9lb 4oz and 74%. 2nd was Nigel Devey with a LSD of 2lb 7oz and 70% and 3rd was another lsd of 2lb 3oz and 63%. This was our biggest turnout for some time and it was great to see so many boats on the beach. 3 boats made it out on the 13th November and in the big tide fishing was hard but there were enough fish about to keep everyone interested, mainly rays and conger but more whiting then before. Fish of the month for October was a bull huss of 10lb 9oz for Martin Quinn. The next competition is on Sunday 11th December NS is our xmas comp. We also have a Xmas social on Thursday 15th December.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, December 2016

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by Dave Roberts

This time of year is always a bit of a quandary here in the Bristol Channel as we wonder whether the cod are going to show or not. This year is somewhat of a middle ground affair with cod showing and some crackers at that, but not in any great numbers. Weston Super Mare angling star Malcolm Bayldon is on top of the leader board so far with a fantastic specimen of 33lb taken aboard Alykat, his daughter Stacey brought up the rear with a double figure small eyed ray on a day of mixed fishing. Whiting also showing with fish to around 2lb fairly obliging. On the ray front, the blondes are as usual, taking the stage with brilliant specimens to well over 20lb entertaining on a regular basis. Sometimes when the cod are not willing to show it sometimes pays to diversify and target

something that you know is there, worth a thought! Offshore grounds already showing some good signs of spurdog which is great news for the coming few weeks. These fish will invade the channel in large numbers to have their young. Please show respect for them by releasing them carefully if possible. With the weather quite reasonable so far we can only hope that the recent trend of big cod continues. Look out for the Christmas period which is a favourite time to bag that fish of a lifetime. Herring have also moved into the channel providing great food and that's not only for the fish! If you fancy a trip which involves very little steaming time, give us a call, I'm sure one of us will be able to oblige!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle I thought I may be struggling to scratch up a report at the end of last month. Every year I look forward to the cod & codling season and last month was a bit disappointing on the numbers of 1-3lb codling we have been use to the last few years. Year glass, migration, warming sea blah blah blah!!!!,, over fishing and mis-management of cod stocks is where it's at. SORT IT OUT THE POWERS THAT BE !!!!!!. If ever in the last twenty years there had been a need for a commercial cod ban in the Irish Sea and Celtic sea, NOW IS THE TIME, for the sake of future of the western UK stocks. Its not that far away from the Newfoundland mess many years ago. But the treasured Bristol Channel never really disappoints, even if you find it on a moody day and the codling nowhere to be seen. Size wise though, it's possibly looking to be one of the better years for a while to bag that double figure cod from the shore of the Bristol Channel ( that doesn't mean the clueless in power are doing the right thing) muppets !!! Anyhow as we moved into mid November those 1-3lb codling made a modest appearance especially in the Minehead to Weston-s-Mare area. This was backed up with A few 8-9lbers and a fine cod of 14lb8oz for Dan Palmer while fish at Kingston Seymour. The past month has seen some lovely bass featured in catches, there's no shortage of them that's for sure !!! . 6-8lb fish have been showing from marks up and down the channel. Conger eel have not disappointed either with some crackers falling to relatively light gear intended for other species. Both Phil Lovell and Steve Liddel landing near 30lbers with hours of each other. The Ray fishing has blown a bit hot or cold. That's to be expected as the sea temperature drops . There's been some fantastic Thornback catches reports from various reef marks. The sandy low water beaches around Minehead have produced a few nice small eyed ray and a couple of blonde ray have made an appearance off Minehead harbour wall. As we move into December the prospects for some real cod fishing is with us. Ding dong bring it on ! It's quite simple Put the hours in and you will, should,

hopefully be rewarded with the sight of that fish at your feet. There are many places to concentrate your efforts in the channel to give yourself the best possible chance. I won't bleat on about where you should go or when, that's the job best left to the local tackle shop in the area. If you are unsure where to go on the day , just ask at the local tackle shop when your collect your bait and top up any bits and bobs you need. The street tackle shops are a great hub for what's hot and what's not in their local area any time of the year, but especially in winter when potentially there a fewer rods on the shore and catch report are ghosted online. It's very easy to be lead down the garden path with the internet brain washing that goes on daily with what hook / rig, technique or bait that's used on social media. Use the local tackle shops wisely with good effect. It makes good karma and sense I say. Working in a tackle shop I feel quite passionate about this if you haven't guessed. Whether you intend to fish the Bristol area and pop in to Steve Ace at Veals, Jeff & Russel at Thyers at Highbridge/ Burnham, or the guys at Weston tackle warehous, Steve & Myself at Watchet & Minehead or my good friend Craigie Mac down at Braunton bait box and any other tackle shop in the U.K. For that matter. All we want is to see our customers succeed and with that success comes positivity and that's bring nothing but good. Anyway besides my thoughts it does all come down to putting in the hours. That's doesn't mean chasing the tide in and out for hours on end. Short and sweet 2-3 hour regular stints in the noted cod holes, gullies, runs or whatever you want to call them will see you with a good chance. Pop a whole squid and lug treat out for a cod and wait for that bite. On the other hand if you are visiting the channel with limited time (12/24 hours ) on your hands take local advice and be prepared to be mobile and move between marks to get the best out of your visit. With that I wish you all happy hunting & Tightlines...

WEST WIGHT / RESULTS

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage The good start to the Cod season continued into this month until we hit a week of Easterlies which really slowed the fishing down, it was as if a switch had been turned off with even the Pout and Whiting down to single figures. Easterly winds do give us some protection whilst fishing the Needles area but it does have a real effect on the fishing, however the good news is that it has now turned back into the West and the fishing has started to improve. We haven't seen any real big fish over 30lb yet, our biggest is 21lb so far but they should start turning up next month which should make a good Christmas

present for someone. Other fish in the area are Pouting and Channel Whiting, the Whiting are an average size of approx. 1.5lb to 2lb but we will see the bigger fish arrive as the season progresses, these fish can top 5lb We were also surprized to see Mackerel being boated on the dead baits used for Whiting, which was a little bonus for us all. Thornbacks Undulates Bullhuss and the occasional big Bass are also coming to the net. The other big surprize was we had two very large Porbeagle sharks on the surface along side us and the Wight Osprey who was fishing adjacent, haven't seen that so late in the winter Cod season before.

first on my new vessel. The biggest Cod reported so far this winter, from the famous Needles Cod grounds, weighed in at 29lbs. One species that has made a remarkable recovery is the Undulate ray, a recent trip saw local angler Jeff Williams land 5 in one session. (All were returned).

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, December 2016

Port Report November started off very nicely with perfect weather. We all remarked that it was like summer again with calm seas and blue skies. The fishing was good with plenty of bream, some bass and a good array of rays including blondes, thornbacks, small-eyed and undulates. The bream were scattered around the usual marks close to Portland and south of The Shambles Bank. Anchoring seemed to work very well on both the flood and ebb tides whilst drifting for the bream was more effective on the flood than the ebb. Lots of perfectly sized bass baits showed up at the end of Portland Bill (joey mackerel) but the bass seemed to favour lures. It appears that this year the commercial rod and line bass anglers haven’t bothered trawling for sandeels for bait as the lures have been better all year. The current favourite for the bass are the rattleback lures. Although expensive they are extremely effective as observed on several trips when very little was being caught until anglers switched over to the rattlebacks. How is it that different lures come into favour?? Anchoring on The Shambles has been as effective for turbot and brill as has the drifting and banks to the west of Portland have definitely fished far better at anchor for turbot and brill than drifting. This was discovered by accident really as a number of ray fishing sessions have taken place since mid October with a generous run of turbot coming to the mackerel/ squid cocktails. Thee has been a lot of small turbot about this year both in the Weymouth/Portland sea area and over in the Channel Islands. Most of these fish are returned to the sea as undersize but there have been a few fish in the 3lb to 6lb range with a very occasional double figure turbot for the lucky one! Wrasse fishing has been terrific for those who enjoy fishing solely for sport. We are able to buy hermit crabs from the local potters at 10 to the £1 and many of the species, wrasse in particular, go crazy for them. Fishing for wrasse in the ebb tidal lee of Portland is a very pleasant and lively way to spend a few hours with plenty of the wrasse in the 3lb to 5lb range with an occasional fish over 5lb. (I am assured the bigger ones will turn up later in the year or in early winter with hard=back crabs or fiddler crabs the all important bait!).

Huss - Fish On II

they are being driven surface-wards by bass feeding underneath them. Wrecking will start again this month in the search for pollack. Earlier this year, excellent catches of pollack were made in the January to March months. December 2015 was a very hard month with most trips cancelled due to the winds so wrecking did not take place but the pollack were always noted for arriving in November….so now is the time to get out there and have a go.

Bream - Fish On II Paul gale had a cracking 8lber - Duchess II

A very popular time for charters used to be between Boxing Day and New Year. If the weather is crisp and sunny then conditions are ideal to recover from too much Xmas excess and relax with a good anchoring session aimed at the whiting and the various other species. A number of the Weymouth boats offer Individual places on these days so worth checking out the Deepsea and UKCB (UK Charter Boats) web sites. So, it’s the end of another year and on behalf of the Weymouth and Portland Charter Skippers, thank you to all of you for coming to Weymouth and supporting the local skippers; your custom is very welcome.

December is, as this report is read, now upon us and the year has flown by. What will we expect this month? The Adamant Bank becomes a local favourite at just a 30 minute steam out from Weymouth. This particular bank is at its best December through to February with whiting as the main target species The good thing about the Adamant Bank is the variety of winter fish it produces. Expect conger, especially in January and February, a variety of rays especially undulates, a cod or two, a stray bass, plenty of dogfish and maybe a return of the smooth hounds especially if hermit crabs are being used.

With way The Shambles has fished all year it would not be surprising to see the turbot fishing (and brill) continuing along with yet more rays. A few blonde rays in excess of 20lb have featured in both anchoring and drifting sessions on the Shambles throughout November so this is very likely to continue. The bass have not shown in the numbers normally associated with November …they were at their most numerous (and biggest) in the April to June period when we were not allowed to keep any and so we are hoping they will show up in December. This is when the boats follow the sea birds around that are diving in on the little brit fish and sprat in the hope that

As part of an initiative launched by the Angling Trust, people fishing off of the East and West Arms are now being asked to use blue lights instead of standard white lights at night to assist vessels entering the Port. The change follows feedback from vessel Masters, highlighting that bright lights are blinding their vision as they approach the harbour entrance. Using a blue light significantly reduces this issue and helps vessel Masters identify anglers as they approach the harbour. During a meeting in October, LISA expressed their full support of the blue light initiative and are encouraging their members to adhere to the new request. LISA has around 200 members in the Sussex area and a number of the members are regular users of the West Breakwater. LISA identifies issues and informs and assists their members to protect sea angling locally,

nationally and internationally. Steve Tapp, Chairman at LISA commented “We were delighted to be invited to the meeting arranged by Reg Phillips from the Angling Trust with Julian Seaman, the Harbour Master at Shoreham Port and other stakeholders, to see how we might be of assistance. We have experience of developing signage that overcomes multi lingual issues and suggested the format for a sign that will request anglers to use blue lights at night. The new sign will be produced as soon as possible and the target is to have the full scheme up and running by spring of next year. Julian Seaman, Harbour Master & Director of Marine Operations at Shoreham Port commented “Our number one priority is navigational safety. We are striving to keep the breakwaters open at night for the angling community and we hope that all anglers wishing to fish at night will respect the mitigating measures being put in place by the Angling Trust and LISA. Progress is being made and we are extremely grateful to LISA and the Angling Trust for their support in delivering this important message.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand

And as if by magic, the Cod season is here. Most of us were feeling unsure about how it would fish, but there was generally an excitement filling the air. Mother Nature has been very kind with the lack of storms to the country but for us anglers, it hasn’t been so much appreciated. It’s always been common knowledge that Chesil beach fishes at its best after a storm has paid a visit, so to this end, I’m sure you are aware, as well as myself, that it has been very patchy. It has been good to see lots of hardened anglers out there putting in the hours with little reward. The start of the month was very patchy to say the least, on the cod fishing though it was good to see that good numbers of plaice, sole and Gurnard were showing along West Bexington and the Cogden areas. It really has been a bumper year for the flats along these favourable locations. The settled conditions also allowed for a few Conger to start moving along the Ferrybridge end to the area of the Cove. The mild conditions and gin clear seas have allowed the match anglers amongst us to target Mackerel and Garfish with a good head of Bream still actively feeding along the Ferrybridge marks. Brief excitement filled the air amongst us Cod heads,

when the Whiting showed up in full force. As we are aware, the Cod actively gorge on the shoals of Whiting. We have all seen the previous Cod caught this year have been rather lean and out of condition. Amongst the Whiting, we have managed to see some healthy looking Cod up to mid doubles being caught. Unfortunately, the excitement was short lived as the big numbers of Whiting moved off leaving many Cod targeting anglers struggling. So much so that 162 anglers participated in the famous annual Chesil Beach Cod Open, with only three Cod landed, between two anglers. Even with the presence of some of the top anglers of the UK! As I am sat here now typing up this report, listening to the wind and the rain lashing at the windows, it has become more apparent this year that the weather does affect the success of fishing the Big Beach with lots of lovely happy smiling catch reports filling my social media timeline finally. I do feel that this year we will not get the numbers of previous campaigns but there is definitely a chance of a big pig with the reports of a 24lber being landed off Abbotsbury. Maybe that’s why it’s called fishing and not catching!

LRF & MINI-SPECIES

Heaviest Other Fish. 1st Tim Daw with a thornback ray weighing 6.32 lb. 2nd Rob Guppy with also a thornback ray weighing 4.95 lb.

By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO Coming from a shore match fishing background I'm hugely competitive and always looking to beat someone but with the very few lrf competitions always falling on inconvenient times so the only way I can find competition is having little species hunts between mates or looking in the record books!! For me its the Bristol Channel Federation of Sea Anglers Mini Species list . Due to the general nature of the angling/anglers of the channel this list is relatively empty compared to national record lists. This means it relatively easy to get my fix of beating someone even when fishing on my own, by relatively easy I don't mean everyone should be flocking to the channel to stock up on there records I mean ,if you manage to catch a species you either know to be unusual ,or if your lucky you wont even know what it is , then it is likely to be a record smasher.

If you are out there looking for records there are a few things you need to take with you; Scales ; a decent pair of pocket scales are easily purchasable for under a tenner and are perfect for almost all mini species Bucket ; a big bucket preferable with an air pump is ideal to keep your fish in while you get photos and weights just make sure to take a few pictures, leave the fish to rest for a few minuets in the bucket of water then get a few more quick snaps

7 fished and 7 weighed in 102 fish for 35lb 9ozs Long Spined sea scorpion caught off Ilfracombe Pier

I have been lucky enough to have this happen then just make sure you get very detailed pictures of the fish including things like splayed fins so rays can be counted, lateral line and flanks so either scales can be counted or species specific market can be clearly identified , mouths and eyes and make sure the fish and weight display can be seen in the same photo! And if you can please release all mini species ,it is nice to have your name in the record books but is it worth a fish dyeing needlessly ???

1st gary ames (25) 9lb 8.2 2nd kai sutherland (29) 7lb 15.5

Camera ; because simply you can never take too many pictures!!!! Luck; this is very important in all fishing but with record hunting you can pick the right venue, right tides right style of fishing and right gear but there is a huge element of luck to get that one that just tips the scales over the previous record!!

On Sunday 6th November Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held it’s annual Cod Open competition kindly sponsored and run by Garry Mann from Loni’s Angling Centre, New Miltron. 77 anglers signed on, but sadly the weather was not favourable.
