BASS BAN SPARKS FURY AMONGST SEA ANGLERS Last week’s announcement by the European Commission that it is proposing to EU ministers that sea anglers should no longer be allowed to retain a single bass caught in 2018 (and face a complete ban on catch & release bass angling for six months of the year) has sparked fury amongst angling groups and charter boat skippers, particularly because the Commission is proposing permitting some forms of commercial fishing. Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd has today written to UK Fisheries Minister George Eustice describing the proposals as “unfair,

unworkable and disproportionate.” The Angling Trust, the Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society (BASS) and other organisations have been campaigning for the introduction of bass conservation measures for more than 20 years. But until three years ago fishery managers and fisheries ministers made little attempt to control and protect the fishery, despite repeated warnings from scientists and conservation bodies that ever more draconian measures would become inevitable. As far back as 1987 the then Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food issued a

paper warning that increased commercial exploitation was creating ‘intense pressure’ on bass stocks and that management measures were necessary then to ensure a sustainable future for the fishery. It wasn’t until 2015 that a sensible minimum size limit of 42cm was brought in for bass, in the teeth of opposition from commercial fishing organisations, to give the species a chance to spawn successfully and rebuild stocks. Gill netting wasn’t banned until last year and even then ministers approved a huge Continued on page 2...

by-catch ‘allowance’ which has been shamelessly exploited. By contrast, members of the public who enjoy sea angling have been hit hard over the last two years with six-month catch and release followed by a one fish daily bag limit which has hit the charter boat industry hard. Now it is proposed that there can be no angling whatsoever for bass in the first six months and no fish taken at all for the rest of the year. Commercial hook and line boats, by contrast, will be able to take four tonnes of bass and fish for ten months of the year. The only welcome aspect is the proposal to close the much abused by-catch loophole for gill netters. The Angling Trust submitted a position paper to the Commission ahead of their announcement calling for the EU Commission to target a minimum 5% growth in the bass stock in 2018 by: Removing the unavoidable by-catch loophole for fixed netting which facilitated illegal targeted fishing. Reducing the commercial hook and line allowance to 1.0 tonne per annum – so that they

“Members of the public who enjoy fishing for bass from the shore or from pleasure or charter boats make a significant contribution to hard pressed coastal economies - estimated by Defra to be as much as £200 million a year and far in excess of the value of the commercial fishery. Not only is it ridiculous and utterly unenforceable to suggest that anglers can stop a bass rather than a pollock or a wrasse from biting on their bait or lure, it is monstrously unfair. Anglers have more than played their part in measures to stop the decline of bass stocks and yet once again the sector that contributes the most and has less impact has been unfairly targeted in order to allow commercial exploitation to continue.”

Ian Noble, charter skipper and Chairman of the Professional Boatman’s Association, said: “No targeted fishing for bass for the first six months of 2018 will see a number of charter fishing businesses go to the wall. Why should charter fishing businesses serving members of the public be put out of business while commercial fishing continues? The Commission’s proposals are totally unfair and will have a fatal impact on charter fishing businesses reliant on bass fishing.” Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust, has already written to UK Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, and will be meeting with him in a few days’ time to express anglers concerns. He said: “These measures to restrict the ability of sea anglers to take even a single fish from a publicly owned stock due to its depletion by commercial overfishing are simply unfair, unworkable and disproportionate. If the politicians had listened to anglers, conservationists and even their own scientists 20 years ago we would not be in this absurd and economically damaging situation.” There are signs that U.K. ministers will challenge aspects of the Commission proposals and Defra officials have already told the Angling Trust:

David Curtis, from Save Our Sea Bass, said: “Sea angling by the public is the most environmentally-friendly form of bass fishing and delivers the greatest social and economic benefits by far. The public’s access to the bass fishery must come first. And yet the Commission’s proposals would deny anglers the right to take even one bass for the table in 2018, while the 4 tonne limit for commercial hook and liners will restrict just five vessels in the UK.This is totally unacceptable.”

“We will be seeking further clarification from the Commission and developing our UK response. Of course, we are aware of the unenforceability of the ‘no fishing for’ bass proposed for the first six months for anglers.” Angling organisations and the European tackle trade are planning further representations ahead of the final decisions which will be made by EU fishing ministers at their Council meeting in December.

THAMES ESTUARY

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

A better start to the Autumn winter season for us in the Thames estuary with a better sprinkling of codling and hopefully this will get better as the temperatures drop and we move into November. Rays are not being caught in the quantity’s they were last year still catching them but a lot more patchy and dispersed which could be due to the colder conditions, I think this is better as to much of a good thing is bad ,anglers get bored with catching them and the excitement of spring fishing for them diminishes. Dabs are making an appearance hopefully we will get them in the quantity’s we had last year I personally love this fish it’s nice to eat great to catch and makes a great change from hauling in rays and whiting which the latter incidentally are here in massive quantity’s with some whiting up in the one pound plus sizes. LSDs that’s

lesser spotted dog fish for the uninitiated are wall to wall if you move off into the swin some ten miles off and are a real pest with every bite a doggy. Another competition has just been completed with the Suffolk and Essex police with five boats from West Mersea and Brightlingsea ports attending not as big as the last comp but with the same result up front that was Sophie lea Brightlingsea based charter boat with the first and second winning competitor again it’s getting to be a habit but we can’t help putting our anglers on the best fishing marks, well done lads see you in the spring.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

Having done this report for a few years now I thought I would change things around a bit this month and give a bit more information on what is worth targeting in the next month. Last Month’s Captures As it always the case this time of year those who have ventured out in the awful weather this month have found some cracking fish. Whilst fishing for flounder in a local river, Keith Black of Castaways SAC landed a cracking PB and new club record bass of 11-10. Well done Taff. Fishing the last round of the Plymouth Shore League Pat Fulton weighed-in a cracking huss of 13-3 which was the top fish of the round. Finally rounding-off a clean sweep for Castaways, massive congratulations must go to Adam Green for winning the Teignmouth National Flounder Championships competition with a fish of 2-11 securing him the £1,000 first prize and a further £215 for the pool. Well done Adam, a cracking result. The only downside to this year’s Teignmouth comp was the very poor weigh-in in terms of size and number of fish. Hopefully things will improve next year. I don’t think the large seal which has taken up residence in the river is helping too much. By now fishing in the Tamar should be in full swing but it just doesn’t seem to be happening this year so far. Myself and others have put in a fair few hours over the past month only to either blank totally or scrap a few small congers which seem to be everywhere this year. I did hear a week or so ago that there were reports of mackerel still being caught at Mutton Cove so perhaps its’ water temperature? Hope I’m wrong but I think this year could be a bit of a stinker in terms of finding some cod in the Tamar. Monthly Outlook So what to go for this month? Well its’ gotta

be the flounders and the one area I will be focussing on over the next few months will be Kingsbridge. There have already been reports of some nice fish coming in, the best I’ve heard of so far is a 2-10 to Steve King of Rodbenders SAC. Many of the better tides occur during the mid-week so to ensure of getting on your favoured spot its’ always worth considering a trip up in the week. My favourite tides are around a 4.8-4.9m (Plymouth scale) building tide with a high water around 11am so you get to fish both the flood and the back. Most of the tackle shops in Plymouth are now selling the smaller ragworm for flounder fishing so make sure you get your orders in. If you can dig some harbour rag then you will stand a much better chance. In respect of fishing spots, Frogmore Creek is always a favourite and most of the marks along either side of the creek (Lime Kiln, Harrys Log, Boat House) will find you only needing a short cast to put you into the channel. However over the high water period don’t be afraid to cast blind out onto the mud flats. If we get the colder weather that seems to be forecast every year (but never materialises) then we should be in for a bumper year for them. If floundering is not your thing then as we start to move into late Dec/early Jan then Hopes Nose at Torquay should start to produce good mixed bags of fish, with plenty of whiting taken on fish baits. I usually prefer to fish mediumsized building tides with any winds coming out of the west. There could also be the outside chance of a cod if you are lucky. Some of the whiting can get close to specimen size but its’ a case of the big ones being there one day gone the next. However you’ve got be in it to win it.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand With the first frosts, the Cod season is here. Most of us were feeling unsure about how it would fish, but there was generally an excitement filling the air. Mother Nature has been very kind with the lack of storms to the country but for us anglers, it hasn’t been so much appreciated. It’s always been common knowledge that Chesil beach fishes at its best after a storm has paid a visit, so to this end, I’m sure you are aware, as well as myself, that it has been very patchy. It has been good to see lots of hardened anglers out there putting in the hours with little reward. The start of the month was very patchy to say the least, on the Cod fishing though it was good to see that good numbers of plaice, Whiting and Gurnard were showing along West Bexington and the Cogden areas. It really has been a bumper year for the flats along these favourable locations. The settled conditions also allowed for a few Conger to start moving along the Ferrybridge end to the area of the Cove. The mild conditions and gin clear seas have allowed the match anglers amongst us to target Mackerel and Gar fish with a good

head of Bream still actively breeding along the Ferrybridge marks. Brief excitement filled the air amongst us Cod heads, when the Whiting showed up in full force. As we are aware, the Cod actively gorge on the shoals of Whiting. We have managed to see some healthy looking Cod up to mid doubles being caught. Unfortunately, the excitement was short lived as the big numbers of Whiting still here but leaving many Cod targeting anglers struggling. As I am sat here now typing up this report, listening to the wind and the rain lashing at the windows, it has become more apparent this year that the weather does affect the success of fishing Chesil with lots of lovely happy smiling catch reports filling my social media timeline from time to time. I do feel that this year we may get numbers of smaller Cod, so things are looking up for the future. There is definitely a chance of a big pig with the reports of a few big ones about.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins At this time of year most anglers turn their attention to Cod fishing. Private boat angler Dave Lynes certainly started the ball rolling whilst fishing the IoW marks he landed 3 Cod all weighing around the 15lb mark. The Needles marks have also produced some good-sized Pollack to 17lb, Bass to 15lb, Spurdogs to 16lb plenty of Congers and some quality Channel whiting. Closer to home Plaice are still being caught along with Gurnards, Garfish a few Red Mullet and plenty of Rays. Local angler Trevor Stallbridge fishing on his friends boat for Whiting had a shock when he leaned over to pull in a fish only for a Porbeagle to surface and take his fish at the side of the boat, this was one of those rare occasions Trevor was lost for words. At the end of the fishing trips many anglers are changing tactics

for the last hour looking for some of the Squid that currently are plentiful, this is great fun, causes plenty of laughs for those anglers who do not get‘inked’but makes a mess of the boat Squid up to 4lb are not uncommon, As the winter sets in the Cod and Whiting fishing will improve and some lucky anglers will win 1st prize in one or more of the several Cod comps that are run this time of year. Anglers fishing within the Harbour will be looking for Flounders around the shallows and Herring in the main channel. SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

We rounded off the mid channel season with some amazing fishing at anchor over the small neap tide in October. The sheer quantity of black bream out there was staggering, a full range of sizes from 1lb to 4lb hitting the deck. Pretty much all returned except for the odd deeply hooked one, which can only mean good things for the future. Now half way through November and I’m firmly into the routine of steaming up to the Isle of White in search of the (sometimes) elusive winter cod. Like most years it can be hit or miss at the start of the month until the colder days really set in so we were happy to see some big double figure pollock arrive with the first of the cod. After a tough Autumn on the wrecks it’s nice to see that the pollock are still out there somewhere, just not in the usual places. Biggest cod so far weighed a shade under 20lb and actually came back in Poole Bay on one of the days too rough

to get further afield. We have enjoyed some brilliant bass fishing both at anchor and on the drift using floats and live pout. Bob Morrison’s new personnal best of 15lb 4oz means that for 3 years in a row now the biggest bass of the year has fallen to a squid bait meant for cod. The fish fought for every inch against Bob who used a snowbee 20lb class rod and avet mxl reel. A sliding pennel rig baited with a whole fresh squid was his rig and bait of choice. The squid are in good numbers and we are having more regular success with them as we find out about new marks and the certain times of the tide that fish better for them. The average size seems to be a lot bigger this year with some days not seeing a specimen under 20 inches in length. Worth bringing a light spinning rod for these as they do scrap surprisingly well. Weekday trips are now at discount rate, £45 indvidual and £450 charter.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club We are now well into the winter season with plenty of whiting being caught, but not as many cod as we were hoping for. The cod season started with a flurry of catches a few weeks ago then we had a bit of a lull. As a result, a few of our local photographers had to share photos of sunsets instead of cod! Now a few more are being landed. Not in the numbers we caught many years ago, but better than some recent years. We have noticed some changes in fish migration – the scad have stayed around right into November this year. Trigger fish arrived, hung around for a few weeks and went again. There are plenty of bass being caught, although we have to observe the take-home limit of one fish over 42cm per angler per day, catch and release after that. There are large shoals of school bass moving around the Solent and approaches. They are easily spotted under flocks of very excited seabirds! Some larger bass have been caught further out – see photos.

John Wearn and George Dominy, bass fishing from the private boat Lady Elsa skippered by Steve Kelly. Steve also brought in a cod of 17lb 1oz. Other fish of note from the Southsea Marina Angling Club books are two bonus turbot caught while cod fishing. Jocky Park had one at 4lb 3oz, and Kris Scott followed up with one of 3lb 13oz. Martina Houghton caught a nice Undulate Ray of 14lb 6 oz (catch and release) and Bill Arnold landed a mullet of 5lb (also catch and release).

SM Disabled AC

On to catch news: catch highlight of the month was by Kevin Osman, a member of the Southsea Sea Angling Club, who fished an area around the Nab Tower. Using a mixture of dead and live baits, he managed to land this amazing 34lb 8oz Cod. A new club record for the Southsea Sea Angling Club, which was 33lbs and had stood since 1976. What a lunker! Kevin Osman cod 34-8

Archie Crawford showed his dad how to fish by landing this very nice bass of exactly 8lb, caught with a whiting livebait. Archie is also in the lead for the SMAC Junior Species competition with 28 species this year so far. Tim Andrews fished from his boat Double Trouble out of Southsea Marina, drifting offshore reefs and banks with artificial lures, catching 12 bass to 9lb and 6 pollack biggest 12lb. He also had cuttlefish and even a smoothhound on lures! Southsea Mariana also has a Disabled Angling Club. Here are (left to right) Jon Leythorne,

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Specimen bull huss have been landed from several marks along the rocky North Devon Coast the biggest a fine specimen of 13lb 7oz caught by Josh Atkinson of Appledore Shipbuilders Club. Several smoothound have still been showing with Ali Laird landing a specimen 13lb 1oz. Anglers will target Spurdog in December with wire traces essential to combat their razor sharp teeth. Tope are a possibility right through into the New Year. Combe Martin SAC member Ross Stanway landed the biggest conger of the autumn so far a fine specimen of 30lb 3oz. Several small-eyed-ray have been tempted from marks along the coast with blonde ray also expected especially following any rough weather that stirs up coastal waters. Antony Smith weighed in a thick-lipped grey mullet of 3lb 2 1/2oz that was the only fish weighed into

Bideford Angling Clubs Monthly Sea Rover. The fish was tempted on a half a side of mackerel. Thick Lipped grey mullet are present from some North Devon marks throughout the year with 5lb plus fish likely. Graham Snow continued his successful run with specimen mullet winning the latest North Devon League match with a thick-lipped mullet of 4lb 10oz. The Taw and Torridge Estuary are in fine form for flounder with flatties close to 2lb reported. Several bass have also been landed with Rob Pearson landing a cracking fish of 7lb.

Boat anglers will be hoping for breaks in the weather when they can get off-shore from Ilfracombe to marauding packs of spurdog that provide top rate winter sport. Bull and big conger are also likely to test angler’s tackle. Bass have been a feature out of Ilfracombe with good catches made on local reefs aboard John Barbeary’s Bluefin.

FISHING FOR SCHOOLS CHAMPIONS CELEBRATED AT THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

Twenty-four young anglers from across the UK were recognised at the House of Commons on Wednesday (15 November) in the Fishing for Schools Champions Awards. Fishing for Schools is an initiative run by The Countryside Alliance Foundation, the charitable arm of the Countryside Alliance. It provides short angling courses to schools across the country, to aid the education of 12 to 18-year-olds who may not respond to traditional classroom-based learning but flourish when you get them outside onto the water. It celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Many of the youngsters who fish through Fishing for Schools have physical, learning or behavioural difficulties which mean they are not always in mainstream education. Each school was asked to nominate one child whom they thought had achieved the most through the course to be their champion and it is these youngsters who were commended at the reception on Wednesday. The awards were hosted by Countryside Alliance chairman Simon Hart MP. Mr Hart said: “My proudest moments as chief executive of the Countryside Alliance were the creation of Fishing for Schools and bringing its founder and director Charles Jardine on board. I am delighted to be associated with this fantastic charity and the wonderful work it does.” Fishing for Schools director Charles Jardine

added: “These students are a tremendous example of what is achieved through Fishing for Schools. Many of them have had challenging school careers but fishing is a sport without barriers and seems to have struck a chord with them, offering something they can achieve and benefit from and teaching all manner of life skills along the way. I congratulate them all.” The children celebrated at Westminster were: Alec Reed Academy, Northolt, Ealing – Kieron Jones Bower Grove School, Maidstone, Kent – James Luckhurst Elmwood School, Bridgwater, Somerset – Henry Forrester Long Sutton Autism Trust, Somerset – Oliver Miller and Paris Thompson Maidstone and Malling Alternative Provision, Maidstone – Callum Jones Malling School, West Malling, Kent – Ethan Hope Maplesden Noakes School, Maidstone, Kent – Lewis Blair MCCH (Maidstone Community Care Housing Society) – Chantelle Eydmann Meadowfield School, Sittingbourne, Kent – Alick Pledger Mendip Centre, Glastonbury, Somerset – Jack Care-Slade and Natasha Harris Midhurst Rother College, Midhurst, West Sussex – Ben Welsh Mounton House, Chepstow – Josh Wall

WALES / BURNHAM ON SEA

Sea Angling News, December 2017

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

When I started to write this months report there had not been any activity out of Burnham due to the constant NW winds although 1 boat had sneaked a trip out of Portishead and found a few codling. With the clocks going back and nights drawing in the next 3 months or so are going to be all about the cod. Will they be around in good numbers or are we going to have to settle for the odd one here and there. Early indications from the top end of the channel look promising but we've had these false dawns before. We also had our AGM which went well and all committee members were persuaded to stand again and well supported by our great members. Thankfully just before the deadline the wind has dropped allowing boats to get out and wet their lines. Friday 17th Four Buoys made it out and steamed down towards Minehead trying a couple of new marks. We didn't find any cod but Stephen Saxby showed us how it's done with a couple of firsts for the boat, a haddock of 1-15 and a spur of exactly 10lb. Sunday 19th we held the Wilf Dunstone Trophy which was a cod comp ( risky I know!!) for the first three

places and pools was best specimen. Light winds gave for a very enjoyable day afloat and all 20 anglers caught plenty of fish with 7 cod making it back to the scales. 1St was Nigel Devey with a cod of 9lb closely followed with a tie for second with cod of 8lb 13oz for Andy Georgiou and Craig Willis. Aaron Devey won the pools with an lsd of 2lb 11oz and 90%. Fish of the month for October sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was a lsd of 1lb 13oz and 60% for Dave Tether. The next club competition is our xmas comp on Sunday 17th December and will also be another attempt at the Thornback Trophy. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 21st December and is our xmas social at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

ALL ANGLERS TAKE 5 – AND HELP RID THE COUNTRYSIDE AND COAST OF LITTER The Angling Trust’s successful and popular Take 5 litter campaign is being relaunched to cover both freshwater and marine environments. Now in partnership with the Environment Agency, the campaign is targeting coarse, game and sea anglers with the same message – take 5 items of litter or five minutes to remove any litter after fishing. Litter from all sources adversely affects wildlife as well as introducing toxic pollutants to the environment which can damage habitats and species. In addition, litter is also an eyesore which detracts from the pleasure people take from being outside – adversely impacting on tourism in rural and coastal communities. Plastic litter is a growing problem in our waterways and in the marine environment where it breaks down into microplastics which are eaten by fish and enter the human food chain. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “The key to the Take 5 message is in its simplicity – anyone and everyone can do it each time they go fishing. If every angler in the country did this just think of how many millions of items of litter would be removed every year." Kevin Austin, the Environment Agency’s Deputy

Matt with a cod - Seafire II

Director Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, said: “Fishing is England’s largest participatory sport and the actions of anglers can make a huge difference when it comes to tackling littering. Most anglers dispose of litter responsibly but we welcome this campaign for highlighting the important contribution they can make to improving the water environment for everyone.” The relaunch of Take 5 coincides with the Great River Rescue, England’s first national cleanup focused on rivers. The campaign has been organised by environmental charity Thames21, the Marine Conservation Society, the Angling Trust and the Canal and River Trust, and cleanup events have been taking place throughout October. The Take 5 campaign was started in 2008 by the Angling Trust’s Wyvern Marine region and launched nationally by the Angling Trust in 2012. Most responsible anglers already take their own litter home, this is about going further and encouraging them, as custodians of our aquatic environments, to help remove non-angling related litter as well in order to help maintain the beauty and health of the countryside and coast for all.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, December 2017

BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Once again, Minehead charter boats returning amazing results. Inshore cod marks producing increasing numbers of cod to well onto double figures with expectations remaining high for the next few weeks. The whiting shoals that were dominating most marks last month now seem to have dispersed leaving just a few decent sized fish taking mackerel fillet offerings. Though we tend not to bother much with the offshore grounds at this time of year, it made a pleasant change for Alykat regulars to venture out into the deeper waters. Plenty of spurdogs, huss, conger and a couple of good sized tope made up the bags over a settled period of weather. To diversify further, several late season bass have obliged on artificial lures. Tim Garrett

taking Alykats best so far at 11 lbs with many approaching double figures. Common knowledge now is that the herring shoals that invade the Channel at this time of year have well and truly arrived. Local drifters were surprised by the massive numbers of these amazing bait fish that filled their nets on their first attempts. With bait fish arriving in such large numbers who knows what the next few weeks will bring! Whatever the outcome, I know for a fact that there will be some pretty spectacular sport to be had from Minehead. With the winter weather approaching and strong winds from the south and west, give us a call if you get a last minute cancellation on the South coast, we can usually get out!

BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle

This past month has seen the cod fishing pick up along the shore line of the channel. Several double figure cod have been reported throughout the channel from the upper reaches on both the Welsh and English sides down into the Minehead area of the channel. There seems to be better numbers of 2 to 4lb fish about than we have experienced in the month previous. Traditionally the coming months ahead is the time to get the rod hours in if you are looking for a double. With a half decent head of 12/15lb cod present in the Bristol Channel at moment we’ve all a half decent chance of getting lucky. You can’t beat a tidy squid and lug bait cast out in a bit of tide in the dark, but don’t count out the daytime if there’s a good bit of colour in the water as well as a bit of depth to it. Pictured is Steve Liddle owner of West Coast Tackle /angling Watchet /Minehead with a fine 11lb14oz cod caught over high water from a mark at Minehead. Also Cornish Angler Dave Jacobs made the trip up to the Clevedon area to bag himself A fine 13lber.

The Bull Huss fishing has been extremely good for those fishing for them or stumbling across them as they pleasure fish marks west of Minehead with even a few turning up above Watchet. Marks around Bossington and Porlock and into North Devon are the most productive. Picture is Mark Creech with a fantastic Huss over 14lb caught from A disclosed mark near Minehead. I tried to squeeze the location from him but he remained tight lipped and it wasn’t from Minehead he informed me.

The ray fishing has remained very good and these days it’s A regular catch 12 months of the year with catches fluctuating throughout the channels infamous tide cycle. The good old trusty thornback can be found with some what ease above Watchet right up to the upper reaches a nice bit of muddy sand near to some reef, rocky or weedy area can see you land multiple catches. You can’t beat a squid, mackerel or bluey Baits for them and they are more than happy to eat rag and Crab Baits intended for cod and bass. Watchet angler Peter Chutney pictured has been catching a few around Watche . Also Watchet angler Arran James ( pictured) has been finding a few.

The small eyed ray and Blonde ray fishing has remained steady with both species being recorded into double figure. Matt Werbitzky has continued his form locally around Minehead and bagged A brace of blonde rays recently.

The Whiting fishing has been ok recently with lots of half tidy shoals dotted all over the place. It can be frustrating if you find a shoal of smaller samples hammering baits as soon as they hit the sea bed and at times it’s a relief to get the bites for some. If your lucky there are a few better specimens in and around the 1-2lb mark. Traditionally the Christmas and new year period is the time to get on them and target them especially around Minehead. Mentioning Christmas. This will be the last report until after the carnage of Christmas. So I would like to wish you all A fantastic festive season, enjoy your fishing whatever and wherever you are targeting or planning. I hope the season brings a special fish to celebrate. Remember make sure you have a good laugh with fishing mates and importantly stay safe. Happy Christmas and here’s to an awesome new year on the beaches of our Mighty Bristol Channel.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage The winter Cod season has started with all the species here other than the Cod. There has been a few fish being caught but not the rush we were all anticipating, We are just coming off the last set of big tides, and a good SW blow so if they are going to show in any numbers it should be over the next week. The Channel Whiting have improved in size with an average of two to three pounds, these fish are forever on

the move so you may have to change marks to find them. There are still plenty of Conger over the open ground with the occasional Turbot to make up the bag plus Thornback Undulates and Spotted rays. Pouting are here but not in great numbers yet, this could be the reason for the late arrival of the Cod. We shall have to wait and see...

WEYMOUTH

Port Report November…..and good fishing is being enjoyed on both inshore and the very occasional offshore wrecking trip. Starting with offshore wrecking, anglers would be forgiven to thinking that there are no longer any fish ‘out there’. Wrong….just like in the ‘Old Days’ the pollack have moved back onto the wrecks and everything looks good for there to be a good spell of winter wrecking. The prime months for pollack were always considered to be November through until the end of April with January and February the prime months for the biggest specimens. So…..if you gave up in despair at the summer wreck fishing because the cod didn’t arrive (apart from a half-hearted attempt in May) then now is the time to muster enthusiasm and get on out to the offshore wrecks. Inshore the fishing has been terrific. The Shambles Bank has been good all year with anchoring sessions producing blonde, undulate, thornback and spotted rays along with conger to 30lb, tope, dogs, occasional bass, gurnard, turbot and brill. Fishing for the last two species is usually done on the drift but anchoring can often be as productive if not more so. There have been a few bass sessions that have worked with The Race being the best mark using lures although a couple of live-bait gathering sessions have found small scad (perfect bass bait) and mackerel. Everyone has their own favourite lures but white sidewinders have been doing well in the murky water. The whiting have started to show on the banks to the east of Weymouth and allows for much more actual fishing time as these marks are at the most a 45 minutes steam. These eastern banks offer a good range of species with rays and wandering conger featuring in the species list. Banks to the west of Portland are more likely to produce rays but increasing amounts of turbot and brill are taken on the ray baits. There’s a chance of a cod or whiting but these are more likely further inshore and more westwards opposite the famous shore marks of The Bridging Camp, Abbotsbury and Cogden.

Bream have been a real trip saver this year. Despite the shoal dispersing gales of October, November saw good catches of bream from the Portland Bill marks and the Stennis Ledges, the Smiledge reefs and the Blacknor rises which are all marks on the Westside of The Bill. The most productive area for bream has been right on the tip of the Bill in a tidal crossover cunningly named by the local Dorset Skippers as ‘The A’. This is not a clever place to try to fish unless you know the tides or have a good supply of throwaway anchors. December is upon us. Expect good catches of whiting. There will be an occasional cod especially if the determined effort to fish for them is made. Strap conger will be on the feed along with the occasional good sized one up to 40lb. Rays will remain a feature of the general reefing and bank scene. There should be a few turbot and brill around and there will surely be reports of some good sized bass.

And, to conclude with reference to the opening of this report…there will pollack ‘Out There’ on the wrecks.

For many of you this has been a disappointing year’s fishing. It has proved to be a real test of endurance and skill combined with a hefty dose of realism as inflated expectations can only lead to disappointment. There is a feeling amongst the younger skippers that groups are seeing a gradual shift in attitude towards being prepared to fish inshore for what’s on offer and enjoying the different tactics that reef fishing demands. Wrecking is, after all, pretty predictable at best as compared to the variety of species likely to come to the net during inshore anchoring sessions. With the challenging fishing of 2017, the support you anglers give to the Weymouth Charter Fleet is very much appreciated. Be assured that the skippers will try their damndest for you…but there was, supposedly anyway, just one person who could create miracles.

Thank you to everyone coming to Weymouth and lets hope the weather allows some good fishing to take place in the final month of this year.

WEST SUSSEX

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Paul Robinson BRIGHTON MARINA AND BEACHES Some good catches of mackerel garfish and plaice on the MARINA east arm with the odd gurnard and bass. Also a few small pollock up the end pegs near the rocks. There's also been some good reports of squid being caught. HOVE BEACHES Plenty of whiting dogs and the odd strap conger but the best surprise is the number of good size sole coming up .. fish to over 2lb being caught. SHOREHAM ARM BEACH AND RIVER ADUR Still a few plaice gurnards mackerel and garfish in daylight and the odd FLOUNDER. Also some nice bass to be found if you have the bottle to use a live bait. Night fishing is turning up good numbers of whiting and the odd strap conger . Also a few dogs around especially after a blow! There is still a chance of the odd coding but they seem few and far between.

WORTHING PIER AND SURROUNDING BEACHES Day fishing can be a bit of a struggle if the water is clear but there has been a few squid caught in daylight and night time. Night fishing is producing some nice fish with congers to 20lb and reports of bigger ones being lost due to tackle not being up to the job!! There is also a few undulate rays being caught to near on 14lb plus the mandatory whiting dogs and pout. Once again the cod seem to have gone on holiday!!

14LB RIVER MONSTER. After blanking on various local beaches for the last 3 nights and barely being able to catch a livebait, today was time to try something different. With a couple of pout still going in the bucket from last night I headed up to the old toll bridge on the Adur. I had a hunch that with the big tides it could be worth a try from high down for a couple of hours. And sure enough I found my first ever double in the most unlikeliest of places. Luckily a local walker stopped to help me net her and take photos. Straight after, I took her down on to the mudflat to revive her in the shallow water and after a few worrying minutes she woke up and slowly glided away into the channel

Species League

Malcolm Stote has a very good win. On Monday evening 30th October Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition. The weather on the evening was good, dry with light winds and a neap tide and some good fishing was had.

The penultimate Species League trip of the year took place on Friday the 17th of November out of Poole, on Piscary and Rocket. In sunny, but chilly weather the anglers were given their bait packs of ragworm, mackerel and squid and prepared their choice of two hook rigs. Starting by fishing on the drift over the Ledge, the first fish didn’t take long to come on board and was then followed by a steady stream of garfish, wrasse, mackerel and pollack.

12 anglers signed on and 9 weighed in fish consisting of dogfish, whiting, pouting and sole. 24 fish were weighed in for a total weight of 20lbs 6.9oz and the best fish of the evening was a dogfish caught by Chris Ellis. Results: 1st Malcolm Stote 5lb 9.4oz, 2nd Chris Ellis 3lb 6.6oz, 3rd Danny Panks 2lb 9.2oz, 4th Pete Tomkins 2lb 8.5oz, 5th Ollie Hopkins 1lb 14.4oz, 6th Roland Blomfield 1lb 5.8oz, 7th John Sloper 1lb 4oz, 8th Keith panks 1lb 1.2oz, 9th Terry Kempton 11.8oz, All the fish were weighed and returned alive.

From the Ledge it was a move to anchor up on some rough ground. This produced congers, huss, dogs, pout and more mackerel. eyed rays put in an appearance with several nice fish being boated.

Later the small

A final move into the bay for the smaller species saw plenty of wrasse coming in including ballens, baillons and gold sinneys. Congratulations on the day went to the two boat winners, Steve Batchelor on Piscary and Darren Phillips on Rocket. Ray Evan now leads the league with 29 species whilst it’s very tight at the top pf the percentages table with a battle between Luke Allen and Richard Ferre, with the two separated by just 0.06%. The final match of the 2017 League will take place on Friday 15th December out of Weymouth, with a presentation evening being held after the trip in the Weymouth Angling Club.
