www.snowbee.co.uk CAMPAIGNING SUCCESSES FOR THE BASS STOCK Many anglers have, rightly, been angered by the EU Fisheries Ministers (including the UK’s George Eustice) removing their right to catch and eat bass in the first six months of 2016, whilst some commercial fishermen have been allowed to continue landing bass in four of those six months. But at the same time, we should not lose sight of the fact that our determined campaigning has delivered huge dividends for the bass stock in 2015:

Saving the bass stock is now an urgent priority for EU Fisheries Managers and EU Fisheries Ministers. the EU Member States have agreed that they will keep cutting bass landings in 2017 and 2018, so as to reach a sustainable level of fishing from 2018, thus ensuring that the strong conservation momentum that has now been generated will be maintained. The Minimum Landing Size increase from 36cm to 42cm will mean that many more female bass have the opportunity to grow to maturity and spawn at least once. The French pair-trawling in spawning areas has finally British record spurdog smashed by Ken Pipe fishing from charter boat Sophie Lea skippered by Lee Bolingbroke. The fish weighed in at 23Lbs and 5oz but because the been stopped: a 6-month closed period and vessel fish was released unharmed as it was in pup Its doubtful that a record can be claimed. The magnificent fish was weighed on new scales and witnessed by five people. Cont. on page 2...

MONSTER COD ACTION IN THE BRISTOL CHANNEL 33lb boat caught cod

WINNER

27lb 8oz shore caught cod A colossal 27lb 8oz shore caught cod that fell to Minehead angler George Stavrakopoulos. The fish was taken from Minehead Harbour on 4 whole squid. George has already accounted for several double figure cod this year from the shore and boat but not content with this he continued to put the hours in and was rewarded with this beast. There really is no other angler out there who is more deserving of this incredible fish. A huge congratulations George from us all at the Sea Angling News.

The Bristol Channel really is the place to be at the moment. This huge 33lb cod was caught and released today by Dan aboard Seafire II of Watchet skippered by Shaun Anning. There really isn’t a better time to be out in search of these huge fish. It’s not too late either to get yourself on a trip. Give one of our fantastic skippers a call and you could well be hoisting one of these beasts up for a photo! Congratulations guys!

catch limits of only 1.0 tonne make it uneconomic for these vessels to target offshore aggregations of bass. This means more bass surviving to spawn and regenerate the stock. The 6-month closed period and vessel catch limits also stop other industrial-scale bass fishing, for example the Dutch seine-netting in the Eastern English Channel. All EU commercial fishing vessels have now been completely banned from fishing in the waters around Ireland, correcting the anomaly that Ireland had banned its own fishing vessels from fishing for bass, but was unable to stop other EU vessels. The restrictions on drift-netting will greatly reduce the mid-channel drift-netting that targets bass aggregations in the Eastern English Channel. The 1.0 tonne per month vessel catch limit will stop vessels taking repeated large hits of bass. The bass stock is currently in serious trouble – it is now estimated to be just 5,278 tonnes. Below 5,250 tonnes there is a high probability that the breeding stock will become unviable. But finally we are managing to turn the tide: stopping unsustainable fishing methods; getting bass landings cut significantly; and giving the bass stock a chance to regenerate back to a safe level in the next few years.

COMPETITION MINEHEAD HARBOUR Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd July 2016 Cost £150 per angler including boat fees, entry fees and presentation meal/buffet. 2 hook match, permitted baits mackerel, squid and ragworm (not maddies or whites) Good rate accommodation at The Old Ship Aground (please book direct 01643 703516)

Entries open from 1st February " first come first served"

It is important that we maintain this campaigning momentum and keep the pressure on. Your support is essential: please keep signing the petitions and sending emails to the EU Fisheries Ministers and Managers (via saveourseabass.org). What about bass recreational angling? Our campaign in November and December prevented the threatened 6-month closure for catch and release bass angling: the EU Commission and the EU Fisheries Ministers now accept that catch & release bass angling is sustainable, low impact and delivers large social and economic benefits. This sets a valuable precedent and we will continue to push for similar recognition of the benefits of catch & eat bass angling. George Eustice made a flippant comment, in respect of the recent bass decisions, that anglers always grumble. To the contrary, most recreational anglers are actually keen to “do their bit” so that the bass stock can recover over the next few years, allowing us to enjoy more and bigger bass in the future. However, as bass-fishing opportunities become increasingly restricted, the argument over how to allocate those dwindling fishing opportunities is heating up, and we will fight relentlessly for recreational bass anglers to get priority ahead of commercial fishermen in general, and gill-netters in particular.

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 3

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke Strong winds rain and lack of cod sums up December for the Thames estuary ok that might sound very negative because we have been catching lots of rays and whiting with a cod or two each trip but we should after such a fantastic October / November cod fishing spell we should have been up to our knees in cod but they suddenly disappeared well almost. My boat Sophie Lea out searching for big cod came up with a stunning spur dog of 23 pounds 5oz caught by one of our regulars Ken Pipe, this fish was a record for British waters (not Irish waters were the record is actually held ) the fish was released unharmed as it was full of pup check it out below and well done Ken for not only catching such a fine fish but also for releasing it. Rays have been prolific in the Thames estuary area so much so that anglers are getting bored with catching them we just can’t win at the moment, but something is not right there is a lot of white bait sprat herring etc etc up in the water and I have noticed when we do catch a cod after being in the catch

bins for half an hour they have turned almost albino this may be due to the white fish prey they are eating as normally they are on the bottom eating crab and the like giving them a very dark olive colour just my observations and i may be wrong. To back up my theory bird life both offshore and inshore with regards divers auks guillemots gannets etc is as prolific as I have ever seen and last week steaming out with a party a black line of cormorants two miles long were fishing both in the black water estuary and through the spitway an amazing sight and i think now that herring are no longer targeted by fishing boats they are increasing in numbers this is why so many whales have been sighted off our shores following the massive shoals of silver darlings as they were once called and let’s face it house wife’s now would not buy herring in fact my wife would try to fillet a fish finger. I think that March will be a fantastic month to get out on a boat in the Thames estuary mark my words it will be cod from top to bottom.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

Although we are now experiencing an all too brief blast of proper winter weather, the relatively mild temperatures throughout December resulted in some very good bass being caught with the best fish being an absolute belter of 17lb caught by unattached angler David Wheeler. This fish is likely to be the biggest ever caught from the Tamar and was caught on lug and squid bait cast out in the hope of a Cod. The Cod fishing in the Tamar continues to be good although it is very much an hours = rewards approach, with those successful anglers fishing the right tides over several days. Mark Bryce of Rodbenders SAC is one such dedicated angler and he was rewarded with a Cod of exactly 12lb caught from Devils Point on lug and squid whilst fellow clubman Rob Wheaton also latched into a decent Cod of 10lb 12oz. Devils Point over low water on neap tides continues to be a good time/venue as does Mutton Cove, again over the neap tides. With a few days of cold settled weather I decided to take my lad Harrison up to Kingsbridge for one last try for the flatties before they depart from the estuary and return to the open sea to spawn. We had a very productive little session with a total of 6 flounder and several other lip-hooked fish which came off. Harrison ended up beating his Dad both in terms of numbers and size, with the best fish just a tad under 2lb 10oz. On the same day fishing a mark in Frogmore members of Castaways SAC enjoyed a short productive spell of fishing during the back tide getting a number of flounder. The best fish registered going to Rob Batten with one going to 3-2, with fellow anglers Leigh Battishill getting one of 2lb 13oz and Giuliano Pellecalle one of 2lb 8oz. Not to be outdone fishing a different creek Roving Rods flounder legend Steve Wilkinson got a cracker of 3lb 3oz. It’s been good to see some 3lb’ers in what has been a pretty disappointing flounder season so far.

Slapton which resulted in some very good fish being caught. Top prize of a wedge of crisp £5 notes went to Gordon Ramsey’s double, the old-timer himself Rod Worrall with a cracking whiting of 2lb 5oz. I did hear that Rod’s success was down to fishing only 20 yds out (the maximum range of his casting)! Despite being accused of paying his entry fee in turnips and potatoes, Matt Pengelly of Looe SAC made the trip up from Kernow and was rewarded with a cracking spotted ray of 5lb 14oz which was returned after weighing and which gave him second place. This is one of several spotted rays which has been caught off Slapton over the past few weeks and bodes well for the coming spring.

Leigh Battishill Flounder of 2-13 and Giuliano Pellcalle 2-8

Finally having had a new engine fitted Malc Jones has been able to get Sea Angler 2 back out on the water. Malc reported that the new engine is going well and on his first trip found plenty of Pollack on the wrecks up to 18lb. With the recent spells of bad weather keeping many boats in port the wrecks should be stuffed full of fish with now the best chance of hooking into a 20lb+ Pollack.

Mary Bryce Cod 12lb

That’s it for this month – happy dipping!

The days of lugging a bulky clumsy smelly fuel powered lantern along the shore line are over- finite -gone and left in the past. No more mantle disintegration in front of your eyes and that sinking feeling you get when you don't have a spare mantle. No more fuel soaked hands that we've all blamed for putting the fish off at some time or another. No more risk of the Tilley glass smashing when it gets knocked over on the rocks and certainly no more near misses with setting fire to your head as you try to ignite as dodgy unit. I won't even start about getting spare parts. This list goes on Things have moved on in leaps and bounds in the mobile lighting world. Being lucky enough to work in the tackle trade and getting my hands on new bits of kit is something that always excites me . Especially if it's going to Benifit the angler not to mention if it enhances my quality time fishing. So when our rep Martyn Howlett got my attention with a nifty little 9.9cm high lantern one morning, my first thoughts were "any smaller and it would be on a key ring and probably give as much light as a candle from the corner shop". How wrong can was I in a big way!!

I have already done more trips this month than I managed in the previous two put together so I’m pleased to say I’ve got a bit more to report this time around. It is usually around this time of year I do the first trips out to the offshore banks to fish for spur dogs and blonde rays but due to the inshore fishing being so good I’ve only pushed off for a couple of half days so far. Both times have produced good size spurs to 18lb and blonde rays up to 27lb along with the usual huss congers and whiting. Dirty squid seems to be working wonders for the spurs. As January pushes on I’ll start to do more full days out there to see if we can make it 3 years in a row with a British Record

beating fish, always released after a quick photo. As I mentioned inshore the fishing has been brilliant, possibly due to the lack on days float in December. Good numbers of cod are still appearing along with plenty of congers and whiting. We had the first 2 bass of the year a couple weeks ago at 9lb and 10lb 4oz, both taking squid and cuttlefish combination baits during the tide. The ray fishing inshore has been prolific with all 5 species coming in on the same day on some marks, not all monsters but good fun none the less. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The start of the New Year pretty much followed the weather patterns of the tail end of last year with storm after storm hitting our shores. On the odd occasion we have ventured out over the Christmas period some good quality fish have been landed with medium size Cod to 15lb, plenty of Congers up to 50lb and a good number of Rays and on some occasions all 5 Ray species being landed on the same trip. At last the temperatures dropped and the traditional cold weather and frosty mornings arrived, fortunately Poole has its own micro climate and rarely sees the snow that other areas suffer, this cold snap certainly kick started the Flounder fishing with some excellent catches from shore and boat, on Sunday 17thJanuary EFSA held its annual Flounder comp with this year’s venue being Poole Harbour and the results proved how well Poole fishes , top boat was ‘Our Gemma’ with a 36 fish haul sea Trader and Strongbow both landed around 15 fish each. All the fished ready to spawn are released by the anglers for another day. The Poole Bay marks have equally fished as well with good numbers of Cod, Congers, Rays and Whiting being landed and for those boats venturing a little further the catches

have added some fine double figure Bass , Spurdogs and Smooth hounds. On board the Mistress Linda Keith Trim landed a PB Bass of 10lb 6 ozs and Keith Slater not to be out done landed one of 8lb 12ozs within a couple of minutes along with lots of good size Congers, Rays and Whiting to 3lb 10ozs Local PBSBAC angler Colin Francis fishing from his own boat on Sunday 17th Jan landed the best Cod to date this year from Poole setting the bar at a cracking 33lb 5ozs whilst fishing a small bait for whiting, just proves you do not have to have big baits all the time but well-presented bait, good quality tackle and the patience to play a quality fish on light gear. On the weaker tides from now to the end of March the boats will head off to the 12+ mile marks which at this time of year hold record breaking Spurdogs (as has shown over the previous winters) and big Blonde Rays in good numbers, for those anglers looking for a challenge then these fish will test you and your tackle. Sea Angling News, February 2016 West Bay SAC Jurassic League Final and Prize Giving The junior section’s season has finally come to an end with the last match of the year and the juniors have encountered some challenging weather conditions this autumn/winter period with one match cancelled and another fished from the Black Hut. 11 members and 1 guest turned out to fish the final match which was considered good because of a wet and windy forecast. Although quite windy, the afternoon was generally dry with most competitors choosing to fish on the inside of East Pier. After a slow start a good number of fish soon started coming to the scales with flounder, pout, bass, pollack and rockling. Guest competitor Josh Craven soon took an early lead with the first fish of the day, a flounder, but before long he was overtaken by ‘legal’ sized fish (fish achieving minimum size take precedence) and soon Eden Lynham, Aaron Chambers, Abbie Button, James Lawrence, and Jamie Salvador Swords were battling in the top five positions. It wasn’t until the latter stages of the match that Jack Parkman stormed into pole position with a double-shot of fish, a shore rockling and pout, both legal-sized which gave him a strong lead and secured him first place in the match. These fish, along with an earlier caught but undersized flounder, also qualified him for additional prizes. Jamie Salvador Swords achieved second place with Abbie Button securing third spot. This being Christmas and the last match of the year, parents generously donated extra prizes and a special mention must go to Hilary Smith for putting up Christmas hampers for the top three positions. Full results below. The Jurassic League takes place over the last 2 months of the year which for 2015 only featured 3 matches due to a cancellation. The league results are then based on the aggregate weight of all these matches. After the competition, all the juniors, family and friends retired to the Salthouse to enjoy a tasty buffet. This year had a ‘best dressed Santa or elf’ theme and was judged by club vice president Maureen Jackson. Prizes were awarded for best parent and the top four juniors; results below.

To end proceedings, Maureen Jackson gave a vote of thanks to junior secretary Roger Guppy for running the junior section throughout the year. Rob Sciones secured the top spot with a specimen haddock weighing 1lb 14oz. The fish a new club record is a rare visitor to North Devon’s coastline and the first of the species to be landed by a club member in over fifty years since the clubs formation in the early sixties. Michael Taylor was runner up in the match with a fine conger scaling 28lb 3oz. In third place was Daniel Welch with a conger of 19lb 6oz, forth Stefan Jones with a dogfish of 2lb 111/4oz and fifth Wayne Thomas with a bull huss of 9lb and sixth Matt Jeffery with a conger of 17lb 12oz.

The junior secretary, Roger Guppy, started proceedings by thanking Steve and Sally Lawrence from the Punch and Judy Bakery for providing buffets free of charge for not only this event, but the Saturday Junior League presentation held in November as well. Thanks were also given to Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw, Hilary Smith and Craig Horton for helping out throughout the year along with Maureen Jackson for presenting prizes and trophies. A very healthy prize table was on offer again thanks to Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle along with several individual donors and a special mention was given to past member Andy Preston who donated a substantial amount of fishing equipment. Prizes were awarded for the winners of the final match and this was followed by the full results of the league, with a prize for everyone who fished that day. This year’s overall winner of the Jurassic League Trophy, Nathan McMaster, had only a slim lead with a total weight of 554 g with Eden Lynham taking the runner-up trophy with 532 g.

Bangers And Beans Harbour Competition, Sunday 27TH DEC 43 anglers supported the event and fished various marks around Weymouths inner harbour. A very mild day and thankfully the rain held off so we all enjoyed the competition with plenty of fish being caught .The pin whiting were a bit of a nuisance but at least they kept us all busy !! Water temperatures must be at an all time high for December which might explain the capture of mackerel by several on the day. Species brought to the scales included, Flounder, Whiting, Silver Eel, Pout, Pollack, Herring, Ballan Wrasse, Corkwing Wrasse. Winner, Gerald Barnes, 1.96kg, 2 flounders,2 eels. Runner up, Mark Byfield, 1.85kg, 3 eels. 3rd, Ryan Casey 1.02kg, 1 flounder, 4 eels. 4th, Reg Clough, .83kg, 2 whiting,1 pout,1 flounder. 5th, Danny Woodcock, .76kg, 2 pollack,1 herring,1 pout. 6th, Kevin Fox, .76kg, 1 eel , 1 corkwing wrasse. 7th, Ben Bradstock .68kg, 1 whiting, 1 ballan wrasse. 8th, Brett Selby, .55kg, 1 eel. 9th, Anthony Buik, .51kg, 1 eel. 10th, Kevin Charnock, .38kg, 1 flounder. Once again the Flounder Open sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre was an enjoyable day attended by 70 anglers travelling from far and wide in the event that also saw a greater percentage of anglers catching flounders than recent years.

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 11 one of 45cm, the longer one did not have any roe or it would of been well over 2lb. Cutis Driver won the Junior section catching 2 Flounder one of 43cm full of roe weighing in at 2lb 5oz. Well done to everyone who turned out for our last Home Shore Comp of the Year. We had a Home Shore Comp at Holes Bay 9/01/16. In what was torrential rain and a howling gale at the beginning of the comp this eased as the night went on. It took some considerable effort to nail the Bivvy down at the start and although the rain was coming through it at one point it was an essential bit of kit on a raw night to give a bit of protection from the elements. A couple of other clubs had the same idea to stage a comp at the same time, one other local club and one coming from Southampton. A large number of vehicles lined the sides of the roads with anglers all eager to get soaked we all must be Barking Mad. Quite a few people packed up early as the rain came back and the wind turned cold and had an icy chill to it. The showers stopped after 9pm and those who braved the weather could of stayed on longer as the sky cleared and stars came out. The level of water was high all night and we could of fished from 6pm til 12pm without any problem. Although the wind was whipping up some waves along the beach holding bottom was not a problem or seeing bites. Paul Driver won the match with two nice Flounders and losing one as the snood unclipped, 43cm and 39cm the larger weighing 2lb 8oz. Alan Green came a close second catching a rockling and a Large Flounder 44cm 2lb 9oz, with only one fish between it was very close. Well done to everyone who braved the weather for the first Home Shore Comp of 2016. The other clubs had a similar night with the odd flounder around 3lb and the odd Bass, Pollock and Rockling making up the nights catch. The average size of the Flounders did seem that bit bigger at Holes Bay compared to other venues we have fished.

Tim landed just 2 Flounders for a 2.85lb total, beating runner up Tony Sherwood into first by 0.15lb who managed to catch 3 in total. Matthew Taylor won the junior section with his 1.10lb Flounder claiming a pile of fishing goodies including Asso products that had been donated. The heaviest single Flounder prize was won by Darren Cramer with his 1.55lb flounder. The Lymington end of the open produced the greater catches with the winner, runner up, top junior and the heaviest flounder all being caught there. Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held an Adult Winter League competition on the 5th January at Steamer Point in which 16 club members fished in fine weather conditions, and all 16 weighed in 288 fish consisting of small eyed ray, bass, pout, whiting, eel and dogfish for a total length of 7,449. Optional pool for best round fish went to John Sloper with a small eyed ray of 67cm. 2nd place was Arran Bridges with a dogfish of 57cm. 1st Toby Oldfield 827cm, 2nd Chris Ellis 812cm, 3rd Tom Bagnall 724cm, 4th Paul Watson 585cm, 5th Andrew Hopkins 578cm, 6th Danny Panks 570cm, 7th Malcolm Stote and John Sloper both 568cm, 8th Callum Graham 534cm, 9th Ollie Hopkins 470cm. All fish were returned alive.

Poole Dolphins SAC Last Pier Comp Report We had a pier comp at Boscombe pier last night 14/12/12. We had a great night fishing with plenty of fish being caught by everyone. The wind was quite strong with drizzle at the start. The rain died out and the fishing got better and better as the tide came in, the fishing was quite frenetic at times with a fish a cast. Well done to Chris Mackenzie who won on the night with 764cm pulling lots of Whiting in with double and treble shots a regular occurrence. Alan Green came second pushing Chris all the way with a great night totalling 558cm. A number of Bass were coming in with the choppy surf between 35 and 42cm. Well done to Curtis Driver who won the Junior Section with 101cm. Other species caught pout and a large Dab. Well done for everyone who turned out on a windy night and enjoyed the fishing. Last two Shore Reports We had a Shore Comp on Tuesday Morning 29/12/15 at Baiter Park. The forecast was for the odd shower with light winds which was totally wrong as it chucked it down at the start with heavy showers for the first hour and then a strong breeze picked up half way through the match. Brian Read had quite an exceptional red letter day catching 6 Flounders and losing 2 on the way in for a total of 225cm winning the match by a mile. He was definitely on a golden peg catching a couple of large Flounders one of 43cm and

The Lymington & District Shingle Bank League 2016 is finally underway after the December match was cancelled due to awful weather. The first match, held on Wednesday 20th January, was a calm yet cold winters evening. Fifteen members braved the cold in a match that produced pout, dogfish, whiting and a small eyed ray with 13 anglers weighing fish. Arron Bridges came out on top with a cracking ray of 7lb 10oz leaving him way ahead of the pack, runner up and previous champion Gavin Sloper started his 2016 campaign off nicely with a mixed bag totalling 4lb 1 5/8oz including the second heaviest fish of the night a dogfish of 1lb 13.25oz, in stark contrast to the current league champion Chris Ellis, who finish down the field in 8th. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th

Despite a horrific forecast we did manage to fish one of the two day day Alykat cod comp this year. Fishing was hard (for some of us) but thankfully we did end up with a result. The eight keen anglers were hoping to bag a few of these lovely plump cod that have taken up residence in the channel but unfortunately they failed to put in an appearance. Thankfully the influx of micro cod kept most of us busy throughout the day. From the start large squid and lug baits were dropped down to the bottom but after a few of these coldest came over the side the rigs and bait were downsized and it soon became real battle. Keith Wigglesworth took an early lead but unfortunately for him Malcom Bayldon was hot on his heels and in no time at all was racking up the centimetres on the scoreboard. After an absence from the scene due to

no fault of his own it was great to see Malcom back and amongst the fish. It was clear he had not lost his touch and he came out the overall winner on the day for the second year running with the longest accumulated length of cod followed in second place by Keith Wigglesworth. The prize for the biggest cod on the day went to Chris Peacey who walked away with the highly desirable Alykat Cod Comp trophy. A big well one to everybody who turned out for this prestigious event especially the winners and special thanks must go to skipper Dave Roberts for organising this fantastic competition. Roll on next year…..

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Spurdog top catches from boat and shore John Barbeary has taken several anglers out of Ilfracombe during breaks in the weather and has located spurdog on the feed. Combe Martin Sea Angling Club Member and Braunton Baits Owner Craig McCloughlin has landed one of the biggest of the season so far a fine spurdog of 18lb 4oz that set a new CMSAC club record and potential BCFSA conservation record. Craig also landed another spurdog of 14lb 8oz. Spurdog are likely to remain in large packs offshore for the next couple of months with the best haul I have heard of so far this year topping over one hundred spurdog between a party of eight anglers. Shore anglers have also caught a few spurdog from deepwater rock marks with Anthony Smith winning the latest heat of the North Devon League with a fine specimen spurdog scaling 14lb 4oz. I also landed a specimen spurdog weighing 10lb 13oz whilst fishing a rock mark near Ilfracombe.

Shore sport is being dominated by bull huss, dogfish and conger. Small baits fished close in will tempt rockling and the occasional pouting both of which make excellent baits for large conger. Combe Martin SAC member Kevin Legge fished a rock mark to land four bull huss topped by a specimen of 10lb 2oz. Bideford Club Member Dan Miles Redmore landed a personal best small-eyed ray weighing 11lb 14oz. Kevin Pike took top spot in Appledore Shipbuilders night Rover landing a specimen conger of 20lb. In runner up spot was Josh Atkinson with a rockling of 1lb 1/8oz. Codling have been scarce with just the occasional fish showing to just over 5lb. The flounder season is virtually over on the estuary’s now as the fish move out to spawn. Small worm baits will tempt dabs from sandy marks along the coast and there is also the chance of an early plaice with a couple of these tasty flatfish already landed.

Rob Sciones secured the top spot with a specimen haddock weighing 1lb 14oz. The fish a new club record is a rare visitor to North Devon’s coastline and the first of the species to be landed by a club member in over fifty years since the clubs formation in the early sixties.

ALDERNEY REPORT

We are now in to our fourth year of this fantastic competition. Fished around the beautiful island of Alderney we have extended the competition from 24 hours to 33. Initially starting out as a Species Hunt the vast prize table now ensures that it is a mix of a Species Hunt and Specimen Hunt. This year it will be fished over the weekend of the 3rd/4th September. Read on but all details are on the poster below plus reports attached here too from previous years.

By Mark Harding It’s great to report that the fishing has been nothing short of excellent. The biggest problem we have had which is the same for all anglers around the UK is the weather. Alderneys exposed coast leaves us well open to heavy swells so to grab the time to get fishing we have very few opportunities to nail it but nailing it is what as been happening this last few weeks. Darren Braby particularly has focussed on the bait fishing for Rays and Tope. He has managed more than his fair share of Undulate Rays with several in the 13lb+ range and in the meantime he has managed half a dozen or so double figure Bull Huss. However his main quarry has been the mini sharks around the island – TOPE!! He has had a fair few and only recently started weighing them, his best weighed fish so far is 38lb+ and he now believes with one fish he had prior he would have rocked the Alderney record of 55lb. we also had a group of die hard visitors from Bristol – Dale Britton, Mark Boyce and Dean and Tom Morgan. A very eventful trip which included 16 species in 8 days (species hunting wasn’t the objective) with the highlight being much the same as the above but without the Undulates. Dean Morgan had the best Tope at 39lb 3oz with Mark Boyce grabbing two at 33lb and 38lb. Dale connected with one between Marks two and had it on for 5 minutes with line just peeling. Dale is no slouch neither, full of experience so this was some fish. In the end the long run resulted in a dropped fish but it does reflect how awesome it has been. There has also been some nice Pollack too with local lad Steve Blondin with a 7lb 2oz Pollack, think this was caught on bait but there has been some good lure fishing for them too. Bass have appeared from time to time too with some good numbers at times with fish to 5lb. We have experienced a good Winter so far for Red Mullet, one or two fish around a 1lb or more but in the mean 10oz-12oz fishies. Plenty if Thick Lipped Mullet too, again in between the weather we see the best of it but fish can be sighted jumping in the bays. Nothing massive reported but it’s got to be there eh? Fish caught and reported have been up top 5lb. Alderney Angling Shore League 2015 – The Conclusion! Longest Length/Heaviest Bag Squid Quay WOW..................what a great last match. Plenty of fish with plenty of different species we don’t expect to see at this time of year and a double figure fish caught too! It was a frenetic start with loads being caught and the 12 competitors knew they had to get a niggle on to form some sort of lead. The format of this match was after all the longest length AND the heaviest bag of squid. The bigger the lead at the start then the more they could concentrate on the squid in darkness. Ross opened up a mammoth lead whilst Gary and Darren were clinging to his tail. Ross’ position in the top 4 was secure, as was Scotts but Darren, Dicky and Gary had a battle to compete for the final two spots. As darkness fell it was time to change to target the Squid, Ross had a comfortable lead by now but Mikey went in front as he had the first Squid so now irrelevant of the lead on length Ross was second. Of course in the end Ross found one but at this point this was pushing Gary outside of the points required to beat Dicky. Others opted to keep catching fish............should this be Gary’s tactic too but alas he stuck with the squidding and was rewarded with two in around a 15 minute spell. Job done for him, Darren secured his spot too. Then to top it all in the distance there were echoes of ‘Help........’. A look towards Mick Maurice with rod bent in to an Eel requiring the need for a drop net, a 13lb+ fish. A great finish! A really good match that saw Ballan, Corkwing, Baillons and Goldsinny Wrasse, Pout, Pollack, Rock Goby, Leopard Spotted Goby, Smelt, Tompot Blenny, Black Bream, Scad, Black Faced Blenny, Garfish and Conger Eel Match results: 1st Ross Johnson 12.14m and 1lb 3oz 1st Gary Maurice 7.50m and 1lb 14oz 3rd Michael Bohan 5.83m and 1lb 1oz 4th Darren Braby 7.04m 5th Fieona Cosheril 5.10m 6th James Clarke 2.82m 7th Mick Maurice 2.44m 8th Wayne Cosheril 2.01m 9th Matt Smith 1.18m 10th Scott Audoire 0.59m 11th Andy Black 0.35m 12th Kim Le Poullain 0.32m Next weekend is the Fish Race Final. Congratulations to Ross, Scott, Gary and Darren. Looking to hold it over next weekend, if fishable Sunday we’ll go for that but we’ll watch that forecast. Braye Beach Hotel will be the base so if anyone wants to come and ‘watch’, last year was awesome fun and who knows what twists and turns are in store! Fishing from 9.00am till 16.00, look to meet up at 8.45am. Be sharp. The winner will get to choose their European holiday! So the next match is January 9th and we start all over again, I have attached the match calendar. Have a read through as there are some changes this year. There are improved Pairs prizes, a trip to the Florida Keys for the winner and one or two other little tweaks too. Presentation is at the Georgian on 16th January from 7.30pm. Please come and support your fellow anglers, it’ll be a good night. League Table – (top 10) Top 4 win a rod or reel to the value of £100, top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and for the winner a trip to Norway (or somewhere warmer if preferred!). Heaviest Fish of the Year Scott Audoire – Huss – 16lb 3oz Most Species of the Year Matt Smith – 28 Ross Johnson – 26 Darren Braby -21 Fish Race Final So the top four fished the Fish Race Final – our base was the Braye Beach Hotel and each angler had 6 species to catch. The same 6 species for each of them BUT they each had their own envelope so they were going to be caught in a different order. The weather was abysmal; this was more a test of endurance as opposed to ‘pleasure angling’. Torrential rain for some parts with winds speeds of 37-52mph! Ross was first away to target a Bream, he nailed that in 11 minutes and next drew an ‘easy’ Corkwing. The lads started their quest 10 minutes apart, so 4th position started 30 minutes later than first position. So Gary never got away till 09.20 yet by 09.48 he had 3 fish under his belt and was leading. His 4th draw was Any Goby/Blenny. Ross was stuck on one and Darren eventually got going. Meanwhile Scott had drawn Mullet/Bass. He chose Mullet, got on his rock mark and immediately hooked a fish which he dropped. Then disaster as the wind caught his bucket with his bread in (bait) and he was now baitless. A quick trip to Waitrose and he was back in action. Another dropped fish but the third one he nailed, a nice Mullet somewhere between 4lb 8oz and 5lb. He’d got the hardest fish nailed and should be away. He too drew Goby/ Blenny. Meanwhile Ross eventually got his ‘easy’ Corkwing. He was stuck on that for over an hour and had to endure both Gary and Darren settling in alongside him to catch theirs. However this was to be the turning point. Ross drew Goby/Blenny too…………..payback time! Scott and Gary were both stuck on it, Ross returned in something like 6 minutes to base with his. Over the next hour he managed to complete his 6 – awesome angling in awful conditions. This is how to make fishing exciting! Congratulations to all four lads for their endurance and bravery and bigger congratulations to Ross as the Alderney Angling Shore League champion for 2015 and wins a free trip to Norway which he will take in December.

Hello and welcome aboard the ‘Fishing Dartmouth’ (www. fishingdartmouth.co.uk) column with myself, Rob Miller. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and managed to wet a line during the festive period!

ANGLING TRUST – MARINE -WYVERN REGION OPEN SHORE SLAPTON, SOUTH DEVON, ON 10TH JANUARY 2016 After weeks of rough weather an improving forecast late in the week attracted 163 anglers, the largest entry in recent years to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival, at the popular South Hams Beach of Slapton. As expected following the storms, there were good catches of dogfish during daylight and whiting in the last two hours and this made it a busy task for the organisers at the weigh in. The main results were announced within an hour of the close of scales at 7.15 at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham. David Rowe on behalf of the organisers thanked the main sponsor Anyfish Anywhere Ltd a major fishing tackle manufacturer, based in Torquay for their continued support, also the competitors many of who had travelled from Bristol, Weymouth and beyond. Any money raised, less expenses, from the event will be ploughed back into the work of the Region on behalf of sea all anglers. Thanks were also extended to the Church House Inn for their hospitality. The worthy winner was local unattached angler Dan Hale from Newton Abbot with a combination of a Lesser Spotted Dogfish and a Whiting to total 155.07 % points. He was presented with the top prize of £200 and the Brixham Bowl. The other tackle prizes were valued at over £800 and were awarded down to 13th place, these were announced by the Chairman of the Wyvern Region Alex Parker in the absence of Julian Shambrook of “Anyfish Anywhere”. All fish brought to the scales were returned or used for the table. The Division promotes the Angling Trust “Take Five” anti litter campaign and encourage all anglers to leave the beaches cleaner than they found them. The organisers are grateful to the Devon & Severn IFCA and the local fisherman who for the second year in succession, removed his pots seaward to prevent any inconvenience or conflict with the anglers. This cooperation between the sectors bodes well for the future as more and more pressure is brought to bear on all interests within the inshore fisheries.

Only one boat has managed to get out since my last report and that was on New Years day. Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden braved some sloppy seas and were rewarded with thornies and straps to low doubles, some whiting and a cod to Pete of 6lb 15oz. A few club members have resorted to hitting the beach to get their fishing fix with lots of codlets, thornies and straps but very few decent sized cod, though I'm sure if we can get the boats out into some deeper water then a few cod will be found. With no boats getting out for the whole of December fish of the month went unclaimed, hopefully this won't be repeated again this year. Our next comp is The Fred Peters Trophy on Sunday 7th February and our next club meeting is on Thursday 18th February at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, February 2016

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT by James Wigglesworth Well.... what a month it has been here in the Bristol Channel. Everybody has been gripped by cod fever as regular double figure fish are being caught. January is known as the month that the big girls usually show themselves and true to form we have seen some rather large specimens. A welsh charter boat was the first to get amongst them with a cracking fish of 28lb being caught and released by Gareth Hartley so well done to him. As the month has gone on we saw an influx of micro-cod. And they still seem to be about in good numbers. Some of you may be a bit disgruntled at these small fish but don’t forget guys that these are your future twenty or even thirty pounders so it’s nice to see a good number of these small fish making an appearance. The biggest I have heard of so far is a brute of a fish weighing in at 33lb. The angler who made this fantastic capture was Dan Scott-Jordan and he tempted the fish using a squid and frozen black cocktail. I will add that this fish was also released which will make everybody happy. It’s great to see many of you practising catch and release on these larger fish. Another notable fish was Kody Sherwoods 26lber that he took on his birthday trip aboard Dan Hawkins boat Reel Deal. I don’t think you could ask for a better birthday present. The majority of the cod fishing is taking place between Minehead and Watchet

especially the Dunster/ Blue Anchor bay areas. It’s not uncommon to see the entire local fleet anchored up here some days when the conditions are right. I’m sure things will continue to tick over nicely on the cod front in the coming weeks with more big fish coming to the nets. If you have a trip planned then good luck.... They are there to be had. Away from the cod fishing there has been a few haddock being caught. These are rarely seen this far up the channel but there were a few caught from the shore in the higher reaches and then a real surprise turned up in the shape of a 4lb specimen. The angler was Brad lock and he was fishing a short top of the tide trip aboard Reel Deal from Watchet. The spurdog fishing is in full swing now up and down the channel. The best port to target these from is Ilfracombe. A recent trip aboard Bluefin skippered by John Barbeary accounted for over a hundred spurs to 18lb along with some tidy bullhuss and congers. This is a nice alternative for anybody who wants a change from inshore codding. There are still an abundance of rays around on the favoured marks. Mainly thornbacks but there have been some nice blondes reported up to 20lb as well. Good luck to everyone getting out there in the coming weeks.. Fish hard!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle WHAT A MONTH !!!! To be honest . I don't know where to start this month . But it would be rude not to start with the bare capture of George Stavrakopoulos and his giant Atlantic green back cod of 27lb8oz (front cover). What a fish to catch and win the battle off the shore. Hooking it while fishing off the harbour wall at Minehead. On an ebbing tide, George had it all to do to coax the monster cod around the quay head to the inside steps, where his fishing Pals Roidsy rod hire and James Wyatt where on hand to lift the fish out safely. A well deserved fish for George who fishes 3 or more times a week and has already accounted for several cod between 5-10lb this winter. A sort of gut feeling saw George lob out 3 whole squid wrapped up with about 10 lug and a bit if rag for good measure into the ripping tide while he carried on scratching whiting to pass the time before the cod homed in on the large bait. This big cod caps off a truly fantastic month we have just experienced on the beaches from Portishead to Porlock. The quality and numbers of cod has been like nothing we have seen for many years. Call it a successful year class that has

survived in numbers or better sea fishery management. (I doubt the latter)but what ever it is its a beautiful thing. Catches have been sporadic ,with none or very little consistency to it. Rod hours equals fish , there's little doubt in that. But just a random couple hours in a blue moon will still give you a chance. We are now at the end of January and it's not going to stop here I'm sure of that. The infamous Bristol Channel Spring coding promises to be very exciting this spring. The Spring coding is Sadly over looked by many who have given up hope after the winter. We may just see the average size drop as the bigger fish spawn . But the head of 3-6lb fish about will potentially make many angler very happy. I'm not going to waffle on about the equally good ray fishing and all the other species available throughout the channel so I can make room for more photos. Apologies if there has not been enough room for all the cod photos this month. There's been loads. Anyway tight lines & happy hunting...

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs Despite the unfavourable weather, we did manage to get to sea a few times last month. Most of these trips were fishing in the confines of the Solent. As most anglers are aware, fishing the Solent during daylight hours can be so unpredictable. This winter has proved to be the opposite, with many local boats producing very worthy results. My most recent trip to Solent banks: we caught 14 Congers, 6 Cod , 2 Thornebacks and several Whiting. Fishing doesn't get much better than that ! It has to be the best trip I have ever had fishing the Solent in

daylight hours. It seems there are a lot more fish about. I certainly have never heard of that many congers come out in one session. We managed to sneak past the Needles just the once last month, and must of dropped the anchor on a giant snake pit. 50 congers caught in all (all released) along with a couple of Undulates and six Cod to 22lb. It should continue to fish well through January and February, as long as we can get out there. Tight Lines John Skeggs (Last Laugh / Lymington)

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD LAST LAUGH

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage 2016 Has arrived but no big change to the weather as it still keeps blowing. We did manage to get out a couple of times over the holiday and new year but most of the fishing was in the Solent, which is not a problem as the fish are still there. The very first fish to that came to the net was a Bass which had to go back due to the very one sided rules imposed on Anglers. However the Cod did make up for the returning Bass with four over the first half of the tide. No big fish, they were all around the seven to nine pound mark but in realy good condition and very welcome to see. There was also a good run of Channel Whiting which were all sizable but not the largest, with an average size of around one and a half to two and a half pounds with the biggest weighing in at three pound twelve oz. Other species were Thorn back ray Undulates Smoothound dogs and pouting, so a good cross section of fish. We did manage to get outside and around the Needles on one occassion with a good swell running of nine to ten feet. This trip produced fifteen Conger in the first two hours and four Thorn backs but no Channels or Cod and as the sick bay was filling up we decided to finish the day in the Solent which turned up some realy good fish. Very best wishes for 2016. Art Savage - Private Venture.

Needles Cod on Cuttle and Lug

West Bexington, Sat 23rd January, 4pm 9pm. The first match of the year looked as if it was going to be a very productive one with coloured water and a medium size swell. Contrary to the positive discussions before the start the fishing was hard work, which is a sign that the best of the winter fishing is coming to an end . However there was enough caught to make it a decent match with a good variety of fish recorded which included, cod, pout ,poor cod, pollack, dogfish, rockling, smoothound and whiting.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Port Report We all know this has been the worst weather ever recorded throughout Dorset since the Palaeolithic Era 2.6 million years ago. As such very little fishing from the charter boats has taken place although the videos of the seas off Portland posted on the various social media have made exciting viewing and made those of us in temporary exile in hot climes yearn for home. As this limited report is being constructed, there are several of the Weymouth fleet at sea because this weekend 16th and 17th January has offered up some gentler weather in terms of wind although the chilly 5 degrees to 8 degree temperatures have inevitably dissuaded some anglers from trying their luck with the species currently on offer. January and February are known for their inshore conger fishing as are areas to the east such as Poole, the Solent and up to Hayling Island. The conger are taken during cod sessions over marks well inshore which were, in the past, hardly noted for eels. One theory is that ever since anglers have started using more cuttlefish instead of just squid, the conger catches have increased dramatically. Weymouth has never been noted for its inshore winter cod fishing and anglers fishing here tend to aim for whiting and rays with a variety of baits being used including mackerel, squid and cuttlefish. This may be why conger have featured for many years on our winter trips and come from open sand/shingle banks as readily as from the rough ground or east side inshore wrecks. Dave Pitman’s Atlanta is out right now and skipper Dave is reporting a good run of whiting to 3lb and conger to 20lb coming from the Adamant Bank area. Dave also managed to get out at the beginning of the month with very lively fishing reported. Thornback and Undulate rays, whiting and conger to 40lb featured. So, as ever, it is all about the weather. If you can get to sea then a nice variety and quantity of fish is available. There has been no wreck fishing reports so what fishing has taken place in the first half of January has been centred on the east side inshore banks. February was always one of the best months for offshore Pollack. It may be that they are out there

so it will be great to hear any reports from anyone managing to get a wrecking trip in. February’s fishing will continue to concentrate on whiting with the Adamant Bank usually the best mark. Conger, rays, dogfish and pout will be the main species taken at anchor. February can sometimes produce some exciting turbot fishing on The Shambles Bank with anchoring often being more productive than the usual drifting methods. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland can also be very good in February with the bigger blonde rays expected. This bank can also hold bigger eels and cod with the pennel rigged squid baits intended for the rays a perfect set up for the other species.

Conger - Fish On II

If the weather is very calm then the Weymouth boats travel much further west towards Abbotsbury to the well known Met Buoy from where the liveliest whiting fishing takes place. This area is good for tub gurnard, offers a realistic opportunity for cod and can produce some good undulate rays. The rough ground ledges between Portland and the Abbotsbury also hold ray, conger, pout, whiting and occasional cod with Pollack on the several wrecks in this area. These wrecks lie in about 30 metres depth so are easy to fish. Over the past few years the bass fishing close in to Portland has been surprisingly productive. Right now the proposed ‘no-take’ on bass has not been introduced but by the time this report is read they may be. Who knows? If so, then no-one is allowed to keep any except for those that are. Yes, I know that appears to be a contradiction but then that is politics and right now, whether we Recreational Anglers like it or not, we are all bound up in the political wrangling surrounding the bass…..so watch the announcements carefully and be prepared to bang your head in disbelief as the contradictions unfold.

Thank you to those of you who have managed to get down to Weymouth. I can assure you that your custom right now is highly valued and appreciated by all the charter angling skippers and that, collectively, we are all hoping that 2016 will be kinder than 2015…. please!!

INTERNATIONAL

Bass Fishing Orlando – An amateur angler’s perspective by Damion Fryer Each year approximately 1.4 million British people visit Florida for their annual holiday. The temperature in the Sunshine State regularly exceeds 30 degrees in the summer months and has over 10 hours of sunshine daily. Even during the winter months temperatures can exceed 25 degrees, making this one of the most popular winter destinations for the British holidaymaker. One of the most popular areas of Florida is Orlando which attracts people from all over the world, drawn by theme parks, high speed roller coasters and a certain Disney mouse called Mickey. But for me the main draw of Orlando is fishing for Largemouth Bass and the dream of catching that one elusive trophy fish. Nestled amongst the theme parks, hotels and roadsides of Orlando are numerous ponds, lakes and canals totalling 8.3 sq miles of water in which to fish in. Inhabitants of these waters include Alligator Garfish, Crappie, Redfins, Pike, Catfish and dare I say it, Alligators. One species, however, that will not be found in Florida is the Smallmouth Bass as temperatures in this state climb too high for this species. Undoubtedly though, the Largemouth Bass is the most targeted species of fish in the U.S.A. and can be found in almost every waterway in the country. There are many fishing tournaments held with thousands of dollars in prize money aswell as professional Bass fishing leagues and speciality Bass shops selling everything for the dedicated Bass angler. How many of you have wandered around Orlando looking at these lakes, wishing you could have a go at fishing these waters? Well, it’s within everyone’s reach, from popping down to a little lake on the roadside or to hiring a professional guide on one of the larger lakes to look for Largemouth Bass. Most Disney lakes are no-go fishing areas unless you hire one of their on-site guides, so make sure fishing is allowed before you commence. There are certain areas of Disney that are free to fish, and I will talk about these later. By far the best way to target Largemouth Bass is to hire a professional guide. These will put you onto the fish, supply all tackle and bait, give you expert advice and will even pick you up from your resort. This is exactly what I did. I hired the help of local Bass tournament angler and professional guide Chuck Pippin Jr. Chuck’s been a guide since 1998, fishing all around Orlando and Kissimmee, so I was confident I was in good hands. A guide will also know which lake to target and which methods to use on a particular day as each day is different, depending on weather conditions. The main lakes to target in the Orlando area are the Kissimmee Chain, the Butler Chain and the Conway Chain of Lakes, aswell as West Lake Toho. Chuck advised me that the best time to start fishing is at first light and he would make the decision on where to fish that morning. So the alarm was set for 5.30 a.m. in anticipation of a 6.15 a.m. pick up from outside our resort. Sure enough at 6.15 a.m. we saw a large truck and boat drive down Epcot Boulevard and turn into our hotel. As we climbed into Chuck’s 5.7 ltr pick-up with boat in tow, my first question was “where are we heading Chuck?” “The Butler Chain” came the reply. “It’s fishing well at the moment.” This pleased me as this chain has some very large and expensive properties surrounding it. Golfer Bubba Watson, basketball player Shaquille O’Neill and baseball player Ken Griffin Jr all have properties that back onto this series of lakes, so it’s a very interesting place to fish. The Butler chain is a group of twelve lakes which are connected by a series of canals, with a total area of 4720 acres. Depths here can reach 50 feet, although expect to fish in depths of around the 8-15 feet mark. Once Chuck had dropped his boat off on the slipway and parked his truck up, we climbed aboard his Talon Skeeter FX20 powerboat. This is powered by a Yamaha 250 outboard engine, which can reach speeds of upto 70mph, although I will add we only went upto 35mph, which is a thrill in itself. As we slowly cruised through the interconnecting canals admiring multi-million dollar houses, Chuck explained that we’d be using live shiners as bait as these had taken the most fish in recent weeks. However, we wouldn’t dismiss using lures either. As we left the first canal, I saw a sign that said ‘no wake’. I knew once we’d passed this sign speed restrictions would be lifted, and I would need to hold onto my hat, literally! Sure enough, there was an almighty roar from the engine and for a second I thought I was back on the Hulk roller coaster at Universal Studios as the front of the boat lifted and we took off. Within a minute or so, we had reached the second canal. With the boat now coasting at about 10 mph, I asked Chuck what constitutes a trophy Bass. “5lb is a good Bass, 8lb is a trophy and 12lb is a fish of a lifetime” replied Chuck. “I’ve had Bass upto 11lb here, so there are big Bass in these lakes” he said. As we were about to leave the second canal, I heard an unusual sound from above and saw a magnificent

bird circling just above us. “An Osprey” Chuck informed us. “They’ll drop in front of us when we’re fishing and take any dead shiners from the surface.” The next second, another ‘no wake’ sign appeared at the side of the boat – time to end the conversation and hold onto my hat once more. Within a minute or so, Chuck slowed the boat down in the middle of the second lake and started watching points marked on his auto chart software. “We’re very nearly at the fishing spot” he said. “I’ve spent hours upon hours taking depth readings on this lake, and marked all the points on here” he said as he pointed to his screen. “We’re going to be fishing in a relatively large hole which is covered in aquatic grass growing up off the bottom and holds a large number of Bass”. I could clearly see on his echo finder that the hole was right below us and dropped to 20 feet in places, indicating good fish holding areas. Once the anchor had dropped I decided to give the lure a go first, so Chuck handed me a medium to heavy 10 foot lure rod loaded with 15lb braid, rigged with a weedless, weightless 5" fluke. “Cast out, let the lure sink naturally until it settles on the bottom, then give it a couple of quick flicks. Watch your line, give it a couple of turns and let it sink again. Repeat this until a fish hits. Watch your line all the time”, Chuck advised. “If your line starts shooting out, count to 5, tighten down to the fish and hit it hard.” So in anticipation, I cast out my lure. “I’m going to cast this rod out behind you with a free lined live shiner on it so we will see what the fish are hitting”. The shiners were between 5 and 6 inches long and resembled Roach, so we were using relatively large bait.

Sea Angling News, February 2016

bus drop off will take you to this lake. Head directly to the Paddock area of this resort where you will find a bridge that spans the lake. Fishing is permitted to the left hand side of the bridge only and no fishing is allowed off the bridge at all. I used a small 2'' floating plug and walked all the way round the lake, having a few casts in each spot. I took nine Bass in total, and lost as many again due to leaping head shakes which Bass are famous for. Although I only caught fish upto 1.5lb, they are great fun on a light lure rod with a 3000 spinning reel. Remember to work your lure all the way to the bank, as Bass will follow a lure in and could strike at the last second. Regarding fishing licences, you can purchase a 3 day, one week or annual licence. A licence is needed to fish anywhere apart from the Disney lakes, which are classed as private. A licence is easily purchased online prior to travelling but, remember, a Bass guide will not take you out without one. So next time you plan a holiday to the Sunshine State, pack a light lure rod, small spinning reel loaded with 15lb braid and a selection of small plugs and soft plastics. When you’re totally all parked and roller-coastered out, take a down day and head to a lake and try your hand at Bass fishing – you won’t be disappointed. Chuck Pippin Jr can be contacted at chucksguideservice. com. He offers 4, 6 or 8 hour trips and supplies all tackle and bait. He will even pick you up from your hotel and drop you off again. A thoroughly enjoyable few hours. Highly recommended!

I retrieved my lure, checked it was still weedless and cast out again. As I watched my lure sinking through the water column I heard, “here you go, a Bass has just picked up this shiner.” I quickly swapped rods with Chuck as line was being taken from the reel, slowly tightening down and pulling back hard to ensure the 4/0 hook would drive home through the Bass’s hard, gristly mouth. There was a solid thump and the rod bent round, indicating a fish was hooked. “Fish on!” I declared with excitement as I commenced battle with my first ever Largemouth Bass. “Hold on to him, don’t let him run you down into that grass” came the reply. After a brief battle the Bass was brought to the boat – not a massive fish by any standards, but at around the 3lb mark, very satisfying indeed. After another two Bass of similar size fell to the shiners, it was time for the lure to spring into action. After I had cast out, the lure was on its first descent when the line started to shoot out. Believe me, when a fish hits a soft plastic, the hardest thing to do is count to 5 before striking but I put all my faith in Chuck, counted to five and set the hook. Another Bass was brought to the boat – slightly smaller this time at around the 2.5lb mark, but equally satisfying as it fell to a lure. As the morning progressed, the sun rose high in the sky and the temperature reached 85 degrees, which is unusually hot for Boxing day in Orlando. Neither the sun or heat put the fish off, however, as another nine Bass were caught in total weighing upto 4.5lb. Only one more was caught on the lure, showing that shiners won the day hands down. With a total of thirteen Bass to my name, I was more then pleased with my first encounter with this species. These fish had certainly lived upto my expectations. Unfortunately time was up and as we headed back to dock, Chuck swung by Shaquille O’Neill’s house, reportedly worth $8 million. It comes with 13 bathrooms, 8 bedrooms and an indoor basketball court. How the other half live! His next door but one neighbour is golfer Bubba Watson, who bought his house from Tiger Woods. We soon arrived back at dock, loaded the boat onto the trailer and headed back to our hotel. All I can say is that my first taste of fishing for Largemouth Bass is one I’ll never forget, and I’ll be booking with Chuck on our next trip to Orlando. If you don’t want to hire a guide or if you want to go it alone, there are two lakes amongst the Disney resorts that are free to fish to anyone. The first one is Fort Wilderness and Campground. Upon arrival at this resort, due to its size, catch the free bus that says Meadow on it. This will take you straight to the free fishing pool that holds Bass, Catfish, Alligator Garfish, Redfin and other small Panfish. Tackle can be hired and bait bought from the onsite shop next to the lake. I always bring my own tackle, so can’t comment on quality of tackle available. Although I only caught Garfish from here, I chatted to a local fisherman who showed me photos of himself with Bass of around 6lb taken on lures from this lake, so there’s certainly some good Bass to be caught in there. The other free lake, which I personally found to be the best, is situated on a resort called Saratoga Springs, next to Disney Springs. A pleasant ten minute walk from the Disney Springs

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick

The last month Chesil beach has yet again been unfishable for 90% of the time with some ferocious storms pounding the beach one after the other. Over the Christmas period and into the New Year it was looking like my monthly report might be a bit short with never ending south westerly gales sending 10 to 15ft waves crashing on to the shingle. Finally it looks to have calmed down and hundreds of anglers have been piling onto the beach all the way along the accessible stretches in search of the mighty cod. The numbers of cod have dropped lately but the stamp of fish is a lot better with most of them being in the region of 8-12lb with big lug baits on middle to big tide being the perfect combination. Ferry Bridge has produced the better numbers of cod lately but if you have more than 4 fish you are doing exceptionally well. Fishing in general along Chesil at the moment can be very frustrating due to the sheer volume of dogfish, poor cod and small whiting getting to your baits before anything else can have a go. Abbotsbury has produced loads of pollock lately mostly small fish (just sizeable) but on a recent session there I witnessed two half decent fish around the 4lb mark. Most the pollock have been coming out on the ebb during daylight to slivers of mackerel with a short lob of 20-40 yards. This stretch of Chesil has also produced a lot of conger lately averaging 12-20lb with the odd monster thrown in. Ross Stewart was one extremely happy angler with a conger he had

recently at Abbotsbury and so he should be. The fish weighed 46lb 12oz which is a superb shore caught fish from anywhere in the country. Most years the conger would have disappeared by now with maybe the odd fish showing but due to the strangely mild weather we have been having for the time of year and the sheer volume of food around for them they have stuck about. If we do have a cold snap for a while I expect they will go off the feed. Steve Perry has been at it again on the shingle. He was fishing at the Bridging Camp area of Chesil for a day session. He had 2 cod during his trip and other bits and pieces, one of the cod weighed 4lb the other a respectable 12lb. As we move in to February the cod fishing will slow down but you will still have a very good chance of that dream fish. Big worm and squid baits are a good choice to target them. That being said, if there are a lot of dogfish about stay away from tipping with fish baits (squid, mackerel, bluey) and stick to straight worm or peeler baits. You will still catch the dogfish if they are about but it can help keep them away for those few extra minutes which could make all the difference. As we move in to February and if we keep this mild weather and the sea settles and clears I expect the plaice to make an early showing around the West Bexington area of Chesil beach.
