THREE ‘ANGLING ZONES’ PILOTED BY DEVON AND SEVERN IFCA The publicity for and monitoring of three new Angling Zones in the Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (D&S IFCA) district has begun in early 2015. The new Angling Zones are found around the Skerries Bank in Start Bay, south Devon, the Emsstrom wreck off Torquay, south Devon and Burnham, Berrow and Brean beaches (including Brean Down) in Somerset. The idea of these new pilot Angling Zones is to test whether using spatial fisheries management can provide long-term benefits to the recreational sea angling (RSA) sector. The sites will be managed by voluntary codes of conduct in the first instance which have been developed following extensive consultations with RSA and commercial fisheries sectors. D&S IFCA will collect data to monitor whether these codes of conduct are adhered to, and whether they have any benefit to the sea angling sector. This data collection will differ between the sites but will include boat and land based surveys of usage and compliance with the codes of conduct by the RSA and commercial sectors, log book recording of commercial fishing activities at the Skerries site, and a socio-economic study of the importance of different sectors. Using the information collected D&S IFCA can decide whether Angling Zones are an appropriate tool for developing the RSA sector. The codes vary between the sites but all are designed to prevent or limit fishing methods that may conflict with angling, such as netting and longlining as well as encouraging the adoption of conservation-minded angling practices. Summaries of the main points of each code of conduct can be found below or the full codes of conduct along with maps for each site can be found on the angling page of the Devon and Severn IFCA website - http://www.devonandsevernifca.gov. uk/angling- . Any concerns about non-compliance with the codes of conduct at any of the zones can be reported to the D&S IFCA duty officer on 07740 175479. The Emsstrom wreck Angling Zone – No netting, potting or longlining of any kind (commercial or recreational) is allowed within the Emsstrom wreck Angling Zone. The Skerries Bank Angling Zone• No commercial targeted fishing for plaice by any method may take place within the entire area of the Skerries Angling Zone. • Vessels which exceed 10m in overall length are prohibited from engaging in any commercial or recreational netting or longlining activity within the entire area of the Skerries Angling Zone. • All nets used within the pilot Angling Zone should be clearly marked using buoys with flags to aid efficient differentiation between pots and nets. • There is a bag limit for recreational sea anglers fishing within the Angling Zone of 10 plaice and 3 rays per angler per day. The Burnham, Berrow and Brean Angling ZoneNo netting or longlining of any kind (commercial or recreational) is allowed within the Burnham, Berrow and Brean Angling Zone.

Tony Lees managed to land a new boat record bass for Silver Spray II weighing in at 15lb 8oz. He used a single squid stuffed with limpet and trotted it right back in the CONTINUED ON PAGE 4... tide using a much lighter lead than other anglers.

BRUSSELS HAS ISSUED AN EMERGENCY BAN ON FISHERIES TRAWLING FOR BASS DURING THE SPAWNING SEASON TO SAVE THE SPECIES FROM COLLAPSE. The European Commission decision, announced yesterday, will protect fish stocks off the Westcountry coast which are vulnerable to French pair trawlers in particular.

meaning they do not get a chance to reproduce. The measure is likely to be adopted on Friday.

The emergency closure, which has been agreed with Britain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, will extend from the North Sea to the south coast of England and the Irish Sea for “pelagic” – or open sea – trawlers between January and April.

Bass fishing was outlawed in 2004 after pair trawling was banned linked to the killing of dolphins off the South West coast. The method, which involves two powerful boats towing a giant net, provides the majority of bass available in fishmongers. Recreational bass fishing is an important tourist activity off the Devon and Cornwall coast.

Pelagic trawlers account for around a quarter of the “impact” on the stock, the Commission said. French pair trawlers take around a third of all bass and are thought to target them during the spawning season –

Fisheries Minister George Eustice, also Conservative MP for Camborne and Redruth in Cornwall, said: “Real action is being taken to protect bass stocks. The UK has consistently argued that there is need

to reduce fishing pressure to protect concentrations of fish during the spawning season and prevent the collapse of stocks – the science is unequivocal. “I am therefore delighted the European Commission has announced a package of emergency measures aimed at averting the collapse of the declining bass stock. “To build on this success I hope we can achieve agreement with other EU Member States on a wider package of measures that achieves a balanced approach, reflecting the contribution of both commercial fisheries and recreational anglers to declining bass numbers.”

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Wind and you can’t take anything for this type yes the usual January scenario gales and it seems to blow when i am due out on the boat and the few times it is calm no party sometimes a charter skippers life sucks. When we have managed to get out the fishing has been fantastic with lots of codling to five pounds and would you believe it still several thorn back rays with some fish in double figures. I have found the fish moving around quite a bit sometimes they are inshore and the next day out you have to be off another mile or so or east a bit and i think that without sprats to glut on they are moving around on the sea bed and with the amount of fish here at the moment they can soon clear up a mark of food stuffs such as crab and shell fish etc. Many of the codling coming aboard are feeding on cockles now how do they get them out of the shells? Brown shrimps are also plentiful in the fish we are

catching so as you can see the codling are feeding on the bottom which is good for the anglers. Some of the bigger stern trawlers seem to have got some by catch of thornback rays and there is a photo on face book of a trawler from Harwich fishing in the Thames estuary landing tons and tons of thornback rays not a nice thing to see, when’s enough do they actually know would they keep fishing until the boat sinks from under them? it will flood the market push the price down and I guess that’s the only good thing to say. Some nice dabs around but you will need lug worm and a skipper that knows were to take you to catch em still several whiting to be had and a shortage of pouting for some reason. Well that’s it a short one this month but that’s thanks to the weather.

VETERAN ANGLER LANDS HIMSELF AN MBE IN NEW YEAR’S HONOURS

A VETERAN angler has landed his biggest catch yet after being awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Sam Harris said he thought it was a wind-up when he received a letter telling him he had been recognised by The Queen six weeks ago. Sam, who celebrated his 82nd birthday last week, had been sworn to secrecy since then until the list is officially revealed. But now he is looking forward to a trip to Buckingham Palace to pick up his honour, which has been awarded in recognition of his services to recreational sea angling. Widower Sam, who lives in Old Shotton, said: “It has been a long six weeks since I got the letter. “I thought somebody was playing a joke on me when I read it, but I’m absolutely chuffed to bits to be

recognised in this way. “It is all down to the whole of the North East angling circuit that I will pick up this honour, so I’m ever so grateful. “From what I can gather there were quite a few nominations for me, and it is nice to be recognised in this way.” Sam, who started angling when he was just seven years old, will find out soon when he is travelling to the capital for his Royal date. He added: “I’m told it can be any time in the next seven months, so it’s just a case of waiting for the next letter now. “I’m hoping it will be The Queen that does the investiture, though I’m a big fan of Prince Charles too so I won’t be too fussy.”

ANGLERS' HEADTORCHES ARE A DANGER TO SHIPPING AFTER SEVERAL NEAR MISSES

EXMOUTH Several near misses have been reported to authorities at Shoreham Harbour, West Sussex, involving fishing boats and yachts Fishing risk: Bright lights are dazzling ships Blinding light from shore anglers’ headtorches have created a danger to shipping, dazzling skippers coming into shore. Several near misses have been reported to authorities at Shoreham Harbour, West Sussex, involving fishing boats and yachts which have come close to running aground or crashing into the breakwater. On a busy night up to 50 anglers, all using bright lamps, gather on the concrete arm near the narrow entrance to the harbour. The headtorches are as powerful as a flashing light on an emergency vehicle with a range of 80 metres and the combined strength produced can reach 1000 watts. Pilots and boat skippers have reported suffering from night blindness and some have even confused the lights for other boats. Harbour master Julian Seaman, said the dazzling lights are making navigation into the narrow channel of the port a challenging task and it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurred. He said: “Vessels inbound to the port have run the risk of going aground or crashing into the breakwater." The Angling Trust, which represents all sea, coarse and game fishermen, is now recommending anglers use a simple blue filter on their headlamps to reduce the light. Reg Phillips, from the Angling Trust, is trying to get manufacturers to add them to the torches as standard.

Fished in lovely sunny conditions the over-all winner with 40 fish for 496 points was Kevin Morgan. Second was Ralph Crosby with 451 points, third Trevor Rooney with 450 points and 4th Mick Snelling with 434 points. The biggest fish was a bass for Dave Knight. OVER FIFTIES On Thursday 8th January 18 anglers fished in some wet and windy conditions with Ian Hopper winning with 11lb 8 ¼ oz, including codling dogfish and whiting. 2nd was Vernon Vivian with 9lb 3 ½ oz, 3rd Sam Samson with 8lb 7oz and 4th Mike Perfect with 7lb 12oz. The biggest round was a codling of 2lb ¼ oz and the biggest flatfish a flounder of 1lb ¾ oz for Sam Samson. GENERAL When the boats managed to launch some nice cod have been caught, with several of the Eastbourne charter fleet reporting good fish! Bayside charters sent a picture of a nice 17lb cod as well as an 8lb thornback caught on 4th January. Alot more codling have been showing recently with some nicwe catches at Langney Point and on Eastbourne Pier. Some are being caught in Pevensey and Normans Bay and I am hoping for a late spring run this year!! As the water temperature is only now beginning to drop nearer its seasonal levels!!

SILVER SPRAY REPORT Unfortunately since my last report I have managed a grand total of 3 trips so I’ll keep this short and sweet. On the 28th December we got out in a strong north-easterly breeze for the Sea Fishing Poole Cod Competition. Although conditions meant the day was a little bit quiet with mostly dogfish pout and whiting hitting the deck, one angler had possibly the best days fishing of his life. Tony Lees managed to land a new boat record bass for Silver Spray II weighing in at 15lb 8oz. He used a single squid stuffed with limpet and trotted it right back in the tide using a much lighter lead than other anglers. There is something about this technique that tends to temp the odd big bass in the winter, this time in just happened to be the

biggest bass I’ve ever seen. Just to round his day off Tony landed a 15lb cod to weigh in at the competition and claimed himself 4th prize, many thanks to Steve Porter for organising. To round the year off we headed offshore for our first trip out to the banks on a flat calm day with no wind at all. The fishing was brilliant, as it was this time last year, with spur dogs coming up to 19lb and blonde rays up to 28lb in the morning. In the afternoon we changed marks to fish a different type of ground, we found that the harder ground produced more congers and undulate rays and only the one spur dog. Fingers crossed that the weather improves and we can head back out there again before the end of this neap tide.

POOLE PORT REPORT by Steve Porter

The past month has thrown up the usual weather challenges for January but for anglers braving the conditions or enjoying the odd calm day, results have been reasonable. Catches of whiting improved late December and early January with plenty of good quality fish landed including several over 4lb. Good sized cod are still being reported but numbers have remained below the seasonal norm. The rescheduled Sea Fishing Poole Cod Competition went ahead on the 28th December. Although the skies were blue the weather was far from ideal with a stiff NE breeze that was apposing the flood tide for most of the day. Conditions in the morning were challenging, especially for the smaller boats but with the wind in the North there was the option to find shelter closer to shore. 52 anglers entered the competition and fished either on charter or private boats. At 52, the entry was down on what was hoped for but with such a marginal weather forecast, this was to be expected. Only 7 cod were landed across the fleet but once back at the prize giving, there were many fishermen’s tales of other fish that had got away. Plenty of other good fish were reported including congers, rays, quality sized whiting and even a 15.5lb bass. This competition was for the total weight of cod landed by an angler within the competition fishing times. The results are as follows, First, Fred Smith, Sea Wolf, 2 cod for 20/6. £300 Second, Kenny Bullock, Trueblue, 1 cod 17/15 (Biggest Cod). Snowbee rod and reel. Third, Pete Smith, Sea Wolf, 1 cod 16/3. £200 Fourth, Tony Lees, Silver Spray II, 1 cod 14/15 (plus 15/8 Bass). Shakespeare SALT Multiplier. Fifth, Nigel Allen, Wishing Two, 1 cod 14/2. Grouse Whisky Sixth, Martin Cherrott, Wishing Two, 1 cod 7/13. Box of Wine. Top boat was Sea Wolf, skippered by Fred Smith. Total weight 36/9 It seemed a travesty of justice that a 15lb+ bass, a fish of a lifetime was not eligible for a prize in the cod only competition. Winter fishing in recent years has become more than just about the cod. Rays, conger, spurs, bass and all manner of other species now feature regularly in catches. It is with this in mind that Castaways and Sea Fishing Poole have teamed up to run a winter boat fishing competition next December that will include other species as well as cod. The event is planned for the 28th December and further details will be published later in the year. It seems to have been the best season for a while for flounders with lots of reports of good catches from within the harbour. Numbers are likely to decrease as we move into February. For most anglers February is a none fishing month but it is always worth considering a trip out to the offshore banks when tides and weather conditions allow. The fishing in February can be outstanding for blonde rays and spurdogs in particular, but with so

few small tides, it is not always easy to find one that coincides with a good weather day. Just occasionally though, the weather is calm on a small tide day and the fishing is always memorable. Great news for supporters of Poole’s annual Species Hunt team competition is that Louis and Sara Medley have agreed to organise the event again this year. For those with a long memory, you will remember that I started this competition back in 2000 as a one-off event to celebrate the Millenium. This year however will be the events sixteenth year and with a new sponsor, the event will again guarantee a first team prize of £1,000. The date of this years competition is Friday 5th June. More details give Louis or Sara a call. I’ve listed their numbers in the forecast of events below. Just for information, Sea Fishing Poole will be closed throughout February for annual holidays.

Sea Angling News, February 2015 WEST BAY SAC Jurassic League Final and Prize Giving The junior section’s season has finally come to an end with the last match of the year and this autumn/winter period has continued to return good catches. 11 members turned out to fish on a breezy but dry day on the East Pier at West Bay. After a slow start, and as the tide started to make, fish soon started coming thick and fast with flounder, whiting, pout, bass, pollack, poor cod and rockling coming to the scales.

2nd Kadie Lynham 3rd Abby Button

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 11 Lea Windsor was one of those anglers who decided to fish at Bexington which was a good move as he found plenty of fish including 5 plump codling. 1st Lea Windsor 8125 g 2nd Ollie Mears 7129 g 3rd Steve Fowles 7045 g Most species: PJ wheeler (8); flounder, codling, dogfish, pout, whiting, poor cod and five-bearded/shore rockling. Heaviest fish: (above bags removed) Paul house; dogfish 875 g

Best parent: Paddy McMaster. Sponsors for the league: Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle, Diane O’Keefe, Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw, Gerry Reed, Nigel and Jane Smith, Andrew Fowler, Frances Kitchin, Hugh Rathbone and Roger Guppy. Also thanks to Hilary Smith and Andrea Joy for setting up the hall.

Jamie Salvador Swords took an early lead with the first fish of the day, a small bass, but Nathan McMaster soon had the first sizeable fish of the day with a whiting. This was overtaken by Kadie Lynham with her sizeable flounder but then James Lawrence entered the match with sizeable pout and whiting. All but one competitor landed fish with the majority of anglers managing to weigh in fish over the minimum size; these take precedence over under-sized fish and all were returned after weighing.

This completes the club’s fixture list for the year, first match of 2015 takes place 1st January at Abbotsbury, fishing 13:00 – 18:00. The club’s new membership year also starts on 1st January; to join or for more information please contact the Angling Centre, West Bay.

Jurassic League group 2014 McMaster then pulled out all the stops with a succession of sizeable fish leaving Lawrence and Lynham fighting for second and third place with Caolan Ayers getting closer to the top three. Lynham eventually settled into to second place with a decisive, last minute double-shot of sizeable pout leaving McMaster with a clear win. In addition to the usual match prizes, the top three on the day won Christmas hampers provided by Hilary Smith. The Jurassic League takes place over the last 2 months of the year which for 2014 featured 5 matches. The league results are then based on the aggregate weight of all these matches. After the competition, all the juniors, family and friends retired to the Salthouse to enjoy a tasty buffet generously provided by the Punch and Judy Bakery. This year had a ‘tacky Christmas jumper’ theme and was judged by club president Dave Cornick. Prizes were awarded for best parent and the top three juniors; results below. The junior secretary, Roger Guppy, started proceedings by thanking all those who have donated prizes for the league and to those who have helped out on the day. Prizes were awarded for the winners of the final match and was followed by the full results of the league, with a prize for everyone who fished that day. This year a new trophy has been presented, the Jurassic League runner- up, which was donated along with prizes by Tom Treloar of Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle. This year’s overall winner, Ewan Chambers, had a clear lead with 2442 g but only 34 g separated the next 3 positions with Caolan Ayers taking the new runnerup trophy with 1570 g; full results below. ALDERNEY

ALDERNEY ANGLING REPORT It has been a quite January so far for us here in Alderney, not helped with the severe weather conditions our little island had to endure. All cliff marks have been out of the question and very few other marks have been accessible. For the few anglers that have got out a braved the storms they have been rewarded with a few fish. Small-Eyed Ray have made an appearance up and around the 7lb mark, we should see the bigger specimens move closer inshore over the next month or so. Specimens in excess of 10lb are not uncommon and the odd 12lb plus are expected during these colder months. This rough weather has also had a good effect on the Red Mullet as a few of these colourful little guys have been landed up to around 1lb 8oz. A few Huss have also been caught but they seem to be thinning out towards these bigger tides, this isn’t anything unusual as they will be back as the tides drop out again. This is also a great time of year for our specimen Thick-lipped Mullet, which can be seen in huge shoals and often jumping clear of the water. Only a few sightings so far but we will expect them to be a little later than usual as this has been the case for most other species. As we move onto the bigger tides and no moon we should see a few Congers, Huss, Sole and Bass, fingers crossed the weather is on our side too! Alderney Angling Shore League Final – Fish Race!! So the culmination of 16 league matches and we had our four intrepid anglers lined up at the Braye Beach Hotel on Sunday morning (4th Jan) – absolutely terrified!! Alistair Walters, Dave Young, Ross Johnson and Matt Smith were just about to fish the most anxious of matches! At stake was a trip all paid for by Alderney Angling to Norway – all they needed to do was catch 6 fish!! Well not that simple, they each had an envelope containing the same 6 species as their competitors BUT they drew from the envelope their target species, go and catch it, bring it back to base alive, draw their next fish and then go and catch that one and so forth! Ross was first to catch and back with a Goby within 11 minutes. He next drew Garfish which Alistair was on whist the other

two lads were on Corkwings……..easy eh? Nope! It was another 2 hours before a fish was caught and it was Dave and Matt who got back ironically together. Matt drew Pollack, Dave drew a Ballan. Dave was back within half an hour and took the lead which he held for a couple of hours. Ross managed the Gar, drew a Corkwing which was no problem for him and then drew Pollack. Meanwhile Alistair was thrashing water in frustration for a Gar and Matt had dropped 3 Pollack! The match had been running for 6 hours and only had 45 minutes to run when Matt finally got his Pollack, drew Bass and we all sighed as we thought he wouldn’t have enough time. Within 18 minutes he was back, drew Goby and within 11 minutes he was back………………….now in the lead but Ross could still catch him but with four minutes to go Matt had a Ballan. Absolutely breath taking stuff and a fine end to a brilliant year in the Alderney Angling Shore League! Alderney Angling Shore League Presentation 2014 Great turn out, great night and think the evening reflected and encapsulated the spirit within the league. Kayak Champ – Adam Salmon Most Species – Ross Johnson 17 Heaviest Fish – Matt Smith Conger Eel 31lb Pairs – Ross Johnson/Adam Salmon 4th –Alistair Walters 3rd – Dave Young 2nd – Ross Johnson Winner - Matt Smith The fixtures are out for 2015, we’ve adjusted some rules, increased the fun and levelled the playing field. Fancy joining in - you are more than welcome, 27 fished the league last year and its all about the fun and the learning. Two new members for 2015 so far and we hope there are more. Pop in the shop and find out more details. Next match is Saturday 24th January, meeting midday at the Breakwater. It’s a 24 hour Best Specimen Hunt so good luck with that. Species lists are available in the shop now and confirmed by email along with the teams of 3 as well.

All rights reserved. who all send me regular reports of what their anglers are catching all say there are quality fish to be had when they’re out. This month has be plagued by the bad weather so sailing times have been reduced. Mid Channel wrecks - This time of year they’re mainly targeting Cod, Pollack and Ling. The Cod do seem to have all but disappeared now but there’s always a chance. The Ling seem to still be around but numbers are fewer. Ian Robson and John Adams landed some nice ones of 20lb 5oz and 18lb 5oz respectively which they caught on the Dartmouth based ‘Outlaw’ skippered by Owen Mallia. Pollack are still around in numbers and some big ones are starting to make a show. The best reported this month is a fine fish of 19lb caught by Dave Evans followed by another decent one of 18lb caught by Ian Robson. Both fish were caught again on the Dartmouth based ‘Outlaw’ skippered by Owen Mallia. On the same trip Dave from Aberthawe landed a fine Bas of 10lb. Hopefully, as the Winter progress’s we’ll see some of the real big ones of 20lb plus coming up from the Western Approaches ‘Skerries Banks’ - Further inshore the ‘Skerries Banks’ are still fishing well with Codling, Whiting, Dabs and Spurdogs making most of the catches. This month’s Shore report Without doubt the shore anglers had been doing well on the Flounders with the River Teign and Kingsbridge estuary the places to go. There has been many Flukes exceeding the 3lb mark coming to the net and one angler, PSAA member Mike Johnson, landed two 3lb plus fishing including a new personal best of 3lb 12oz 12dr. Other very notable Flounders include a 3lb 10oz 8dr for Plymouth angler Mike Smale (released), 3lb 8oz for Stephan Herbert which won him 1st place in the T&BASA RNLI Christmas Flounder comp, 3lb 6oz for Teignmouth angler Ross Stewart, 3lb 5oz 8dr again for Plymouth angler Mike Smale, 3lb 3oz 2dr for Teignmouth angler Martin Hall (released), 3lb 3oz for Chris Lynn, another 3lb 3oz for T&BASA member Roger Barge which earned him 2nd place in the T&BASA RNLI Christmas Flounder comp and another of 3lb 3oz for BSAC member Dave Fortune and finally Dartmouth angler Paul Lingham had a great time fishing for Flounders landing 16 over a two day period with the best going to 3lb 0oz 2dr. Well done guys! Anglers have also been targeting the big cock Wrasse which come inshore this time of year. Dartmouth angler Garry Harding landed the best reported this month and what a cracker at 6lb 5oz 12dr. BSAC member Rob Marshall just missed out on the magical 6lb mark when he landed a beauty of 5lb 14oz 12dr (released)

WALES / NEWS

13TH AIR AMBULANCE OPEN The 13th Wales Air Ambulance Open Beach Fishing Competition, organised by members from Pembroke & District Angling Club and Osprey Sea Angling Club was held on 4th January 2015 on Amroth beach in South Pembrokeshire. The weather was not great as it was very cold with a fresh South Easterly causing more than a good ripple and good colour in the water, auguring well for a good catch. The turnout and support was even better than 2014 with 110 (cf102) anglers including 3 junior boys and 4 Ladies. We thank them all very much indeed for their support and must, once again, mention Saundersfoot Angling Club as they held a match within this match which helped swell the numbers. However, this was still down on the record 120 in 2013, though not by much. Anyway, the fishing was very good indeed with 38 anglers, including 2 Ladies & 1 junior, weighing in 64 Flounders, with others sizeable, undersized being caught. Thus, a few anglers did not bother to weigh in as they had no chance of making the prize table. It was great to see Amroth, despite nature doing its worst in 2014, continuing at its best and fishing like it used to fish years ago. The winning angler who managed to land 3 decent sized flounder, for 1Kg 440gms was local Milford Haven rod Lee James netting him the first prize of £200. Second was Desley Jones from Gorseinon who also managed to bag 3 sizeable flounder but for 35 grams less at 1Kg 405gms netting him £75 and in third place was a Milford Haven regular and staunch supporter of these events, obtaining and donating prizes every year, Leigh Rogers, who also weighed in 3 flounder but for Kg 395gms, just a further 10 grams less netting him £25. All very close indeed. The pool for the heaviest fish and walking away with a cool £110 was yet another Milford haven regular Daniel Tucker whose heaviest weighed 730gms. The pair’s competition, in which both anglers had to weigh in, was won by Lee and his partner, again a local, Rhys Holmes, with 6 Flounder for 2Kg 505gms. Second with 5 Flounder for 2Kg 290gms were, Daniel and his father Shane, who is also a staunch supporter, especially of the junior section every year and third again with 5 but for 1Kg 990gms were more regulars and another Father and Son, Jeff and Chris Stephens from Bridgend.

congratulate the anglers from the organising clubs, you know who you are, together with Roger Harris of the Amroth Arms who always puts his premises and valued support at this event’s disposal. Lastly, we must again thank all the kind and generous sponsors of the event, including those already mentioned who donated cash, made collections and donated prizes for the mega raffle which ensured continuation of the event’s great success. These were, in no particular order, EFSA Wales, James, Andrew & Mrs J Skeels, Sian Tremarco, Pembroke & District Angling Club, Andy Luxford, Osprey Sea Angling Club, John O’Connor, John Henton of Raven Trading, Simon, Denis & Alexander Nicholas, Grainger Tubolt, David Brayford, Martin and Sandra Thompson of Anglers Corner, Milford Haven, Steve Davies of Davies decorators, Shane Tucker, Dale sailing Company, Leigh & Andrew Rogers and Dai Etherington. If anybody feels aggrieved that they have been missed off this list and we hope there isn’t, we are truly sorry, but thank you, most warmly, for your continued support. One final thing is that the whole shebang repeats itself in five weeks on Sunday the 8th February with the 8th Felinfoel Brewery Double Dragon RNLI Annual Fishing Open, in aid of the local lifeboat stations at Angle & Tenby, for which we now pray for at least the equivalent or better weather and a good turnout.

The cold conditions on the day (Picture by John O’Connor)

The Ladies section was won by a Welsh International lady Sally Owen from Cardiff with 2 Flounder for 920gms and the junior section was won by the only junior to weigh in, Ashley Blunsden from Pembroke who also had 2 for 900gms. We, once again, have to thank James Lemon of Awesome Fishing for adding to the prizes for the junior section winners with a free guided trip out on his boat or on shore Bass fishing later this year. However, the most important result on the day was that the event, by the time all the money promised is in, will have raised close to £1000 for the Wales Air Ambulance pushing the total raised over the 13 years this competition has been running, to approx £18,000. To thank for this sterling effort we must first

CLAPA CHARITY MATCH RESULTS AND REPORT Sea Angling Community Charity Match organisers have hailed their latest event a success after raising a total of £1522.50 in aid of CLAPA, the Cleft Lip and Palate association. The event which took place at Amroth, Pembrokeshire on 6th December proved even more successful than their previous attempt in 2013 where they raised in excess of £1200 for the children’s cancer charity Clic Sargent. Despite being held close to Christmas the match still attracted good support with sixty eight competitors and many bystanders attending including anglers who had travelled from as far away as Bristol to take part. John Loring, Event Manager said, “Given the time of year we were more than happy with the attendance, turnout and money raised - a great day for us and CLAPA”.

LIMITS ON INSHORE DREDGING OFF SCOTLAND'S COAST EXAMINED The Scottish government is considering proposals to limit dredging and trawling in inshore waters to conserve fish and shellfish stocks. Imposing the restrictions would benefit the environment and increase income and employment in the long term, according to a report to the government.

Mike Mather took the senior section with a 58cm Lesser Spotted Dogfish winning £150 and an eight hour bass trip for two provided by James Lemon and Awesome Fishing. Runner up spot went to Chris Stephens with a combined bag of 193cm of flounder, dog fish and dabs, where he gained £150 for his efforts, while K Blumdendale’s 39cm flounder saw him into third place, winning £50.

But more remote fishing areas in the Highlands and Islands could be hit by the proposals.

The junior division saw not one but two winners as both Jamie Gibson and Billy Goodwin tied for first place with a 38cm flounder apiece. Both lads took home £25 and a four hour bass fishing trip for two courtesy of James Lemon and Awesome Fishing. While second place and £15 went to Ashley Blunsden for his 35.8cm flounder.

The report concluded that, overall, Scotland would benefit over a 20-year period because improved marine recreation would generate many more jobs than those lost in the commercial fishing sector.

A grand raffle followed the match in which many prizes were donated and organisers would like to thank everyone who had given generously to the event. The raffle organised by Tom O’Brien of Neyland District Angling Club raised over £400 towards the total.

The report said restrictions could lead to job losses in these places. The study looked at the effects of stopping dredging and trawling for prawns, lobsters and scallops from being done one to three miles (1.6-4.8km) from shore.

However, it said fisheries in the north west, far north coast and islands could see net job losses and income from fishing decline by millions of pounds. But the report suggested this could be minimised by imposing any restrictions selectively to areas like the north east, the Clyde and south west of Scotland where the greatest benefits from increased marine recreation would be felt.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, February 2015

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT by James Wigglesworth

With the emphasis still being very much on the cod I am pleased to write that that there’s bucket loads of them out there. Minehead boat Alykat Too has been taking plenty, with numbers exceeding thirty on many charters. Also good whiting, rays, spurdog and congers making for some cracking sport. One such trip included lots of codling with most being in the 4-6lb bracket a couple of doubles and a cracking blonde ray of 22lb for Bristol angler Phil Lewis. The cod will continue to provide brilliant sport over the next few weeks so phone Dave Roberts for your last minute chance to have a crack at this great, close to home sport. If you’re on your own, no problem, as there are individual spaces available, there’s always a chance of getting afloat. Further down the Channel at Ilfracombe the spudog fest continues with thirty to forty a trip coming aboard. One recent trip on Bluefin skippered by John Barbeary saw some fine specimens caught with Minehead angler Arthur Talbot bagging a fine brace of spurs at 15 and 16lb. The male fish seem to have moved off in the last week but there are still huge

amounts of female fish around to give you a good spirited fight. There are some nice congers showing as well on these offshore marks with fish up to 30lb being landed regularly with whiting and bull huss making up most of the catches. There seems to be a huge abundance of codling showing on the Watchet grounds with Shaun Anning skipper of Seafire II seeing anything between twenty and thirty fish on many eight hour trips. Most of them are coming to fresh lug and rag worm baits so don’t forget to put your orders in with the local tackle shop if you do have a trip planned. It really can make all the difference. Thornback rays, congers and some lovely 2-3lb whiting are the norm on the majority of trips. We have the annual Alykat Cod competition starting on Monday which I’m fortunate enough to be taking part in. This popular event sees some very experienced and competent anglers going head to head for the title of Alykat Cod Champion. I’ll be sure to let you know in next month’s issue how the two day event unfolds. Until then be safe and fish hard!

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle

2015 has started on a very positive note for the Bristol Channel shore angler. The Christmas and new year holidays saw loads of anglers taking advantage of the festive break and the amount of fish recorded was impressive throughout the channel. A good few double figure cod and rays were landed. It just goes to show how good the prospects are when the beaches are getting a good bit of attention. I've left it a bit late this month to get stuck right in with my normal monthly report as the dead line is a matter of hours away and to be honest, it should of been done a good few days ago. Apologies if it's A bit on the short side. The past month has seen the codling fishing continue throughout the channel. There has been some superb catches reported again with plenty of 2-3lb codling along with a good number of 4lbers mixed in at various places and the odd report of bags of 5 or 6 cod for about 30 ish lbs. If only every year could be this good for codling. It would do no end of good for local communities along the whole coast of the Bristol Channel, both the English and Welsh side. There's always a happy buzz and good feeling of well being in the sea angling world when the coding stocks are good. No other fish seems to get us going like the cod.

It doesn't seem to matter where we decide to fish. The codling seem to be there or have been there, even at random places we wouldn't even think of fishing, but we end up there for one reason or another. How many times have we heard " I thought I would try that spot and had a codling first cast ". It's un canny how many times it happens. The month ahead is traditionally and probably the hardest month of the year for the hardy Bristol Channel shore angler . But this year the signs are different and I believe we can expect some reasonable catches of codling and rays, just as long as that sea temperature doesn't chill to cold . Even if the codling catches take a bit of a dip. It will only be short lived as we are set right up for one of the best spring coding seasons in many years. As with most years, the spring codling are not as wide spread as the autumn run . There are still so many marks , high and low water throughout the channel to enjoy bagging up on prime plump condition spring codling in the warm spring sunshine, but that's a little way off at the moment by the look of the frost out there this morning and reports of some more cold weather on its way. The prospects are good for blonde rays from the sandy low water marks around Minehead along with a few bigger small eyed ray. Already a few blonde Rays to 16lb and small eyed to just over 10lb have been caught in this area. Along the North Devon rock marks there has been some cracking fishing for Congers, Huss and a good handful of Spur dogs. The best Spur reported was caught by Barnstaple angler Dan Redmore at 15lb14oz . That's a huge spur dog from the shore and the prospects for the shore record to tumble can't be far away from being caught from this area. Anyway I'm going to have to cut it short because time is up. I hope next month I can make up for it with reports of the great fishing we have in the Bristol Channel at the moment. Tight lines and happy hunting

The start of 2015 has brought a mixed bag of weather. We have had only a few calm days, followed by a series of low pressure weather systems which have now been hanging around for weeks. Just before the storms set in, I would say fishing south of the needles was at its peak. Generally, results continued to be very good with some of the best whiting fishing I have seen for years. If you want to target these, you will not go far wrong with a set of baited Hokeyes. (Tip: Try baiting with a piece of pout or whiting). The cod too, continue to be caught in good numbers. Don’t hang up your gear just yet, there's still a chance for that 40 pounder. For those brave enough to venture over the horizon you can expect to catch spurdogs, cod, rays and conger. NEWS / WEYMOUTH

NEWS FROM THE U.S.

Where Have All the Cod Gone? PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — In November, regulators from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shut down recreational and commercial cod fishing in the Gulf of Maine, that enchanting arm of the coastal sea stretching east-northeast from Cape Cod. They did not have much choice: Federal law requires action to rebuild fish stocks when they are depleted, and recent surveys revealed cod populations to be at record lows, despite decades of regulations intended to restore them. It’s easy to imagine this recent drop in the cod population as a new phenomenon — a result, perhaps, of global warming, or some combination of climate change and overfishing by giant steel ships armed with electronic fishfinders and precise GPS navigation systems. And it’s just as easy to imagine that, after a season or two of belt-tightening, fish populations will rebound — it is, after all, a strategy that state and federal regulators have pursued for decades. In fact, humans have been affecting the Atlantic’s fish stocks for centuries, beginning with technology so simple that people today would not even consider it “technology.” Forgetting that history, we opt for short-term fixes, which only compound the problem. The fishery resources of the western Atlantic once seemed virtually limitless, with fish supposedly as numerous as grains of sand in the Sahara. And yet the current emergency effort to restore cod populations is simply the latest chapter in a 150-year saga in which fishermen, scientists, industrialists and politicians have consistently confronted emptier nets and fewer fish. As early as the 1850s, fishermen from Maine and Massachusetts began to pester their governments to do something about declining cod catches. Those men fished with hooks and lines from small wooden sailboats and rowboats. Fearing “the material injury of the codfishing interests of this state” by increased fishing for menhaden, a critical forage fish for cod, fishermen from Gouldsboro, Me., implored the Legislature in 1857 to limit menhaden hauls.

revolution in the fisheries. Sails and oars and hooks and lines were about to be replaced by steam and diesel engines, and massive nets dragged along the bottom that snared every fish in their path. Decades of well-founded concerns about depletion were overwhelmed by an avalanche of cheap fish. The new generation of draggers could fish faster, harder and deeper for the few fish that remained. Fishermen breathed a sigh of relief. Twentieth-century cod populations, ravaged by draggers’ efficiency, declined further. In 1954 a fisheries economist from Boston charged fishing interests with continuing “to exploit recklessly the limited self-renewing stocks of these species.” That was just before the first factory-equipped freezer-trawler arrived at the prime fishing waters around the Grand Banks off Newfoundland from Europe. The size of an ocean liner, it could scoop up everything in its wake. Those ships made the steam-powered draggers from 1914 look positively quaint. And they caught lots of fish. Overfishing has been the norm for a very long time, but the market has masked the mess in two fundamental ways. At every step fishermen confronting declining catches developed gear that fished more intensively, taking a larger percentage of the fewer fish that remained. Such a strategy was clearly not sustainable. Meanwhile, fishermen continued to earn enough to make fishing worthwhile, even if many encouraged their sons to pursue other careers because there would be little future in fishing. The Gulf of Maine cod stocks today are probably only a fraction of 1 percent of what they were during George Washington’s presidency.

If there is any lesson in this story of largescale, long-term environmental degradation, it is not that fishermen were (or are) to blame, or that scientists were (or are) to blame, or that politicians were (or are) to blame. The system was (and is) to blame. Our system of exploiting nature’s resources, with its checks and balances, its desire for prosperity and security, its willingness to honor a multiplicity of voices, and its changing sense of “normal” is insufficiently Yet annual cod landings in the Gulf of Maine nimble to stop the desecration of commonly continued to slide, from about 70,000 metric held resources on which the long-term good of tons in 1861 to about 54,000 metric tons in everyone depends. 1880, to about 20,000 tons in the 1920s, to just a few thousand metric tons in recent years. California as they head out into the Pacific aboard a commercial vessel named the City of Long Beach.

Each year, sport fishermen unintentionally kill millions of deep-water fish they don't want or can't keep. These fish die even though they are handled gently and released quickly. The reason: a condition called barotrauma, which divers know as "the bends." The problem occurs in fish that have a swim bladder, an internal balloon that helps them control their buoyancy. When a fish is pulled up, "that balloon rapidly begins to expand as the pressure from the water decreases," says Chris Lowe, a marine scientist at California State, Long Beach. So by the time a deep-water fish reaches the surface, he says, "its eyes could be popped out of its head, its stomach is pushed out of its mouth and it looks absolutely horrific." A marlin caught as bycatch by the California drift gillnet fishery. The conservation group Oceana called the fishery one of the "dirtiest" in the U.S. because of its high rate of discarded fish and other marine animals. Fish experiencing barotrauma are often unable to swim, and they look like they're dead — but they're not. Lowe discovered this about 10 years ago while trying to implant tracking devices in California rockfish. These rockfish live hundreds of feet below the surface, which is a tricky place to perform minor surgery. So Lowe's team brought the fish to the surface, implanted a tracking device and then quickly sent them back down in cages. Two days later, "we brought the cages back up and all the fish were alive," Lowe says. Other experiments confirmed that deep-water fish could survive a trip to the surface — if fishermen had a way to send them back in a hurry. The question was how. Scientists didn't know. "So it was really fishermen that came up with many of the ideas on how to get these fish back down," Lowe says. The result is a wide range of what are called "descending devices." Some are just upside-down milk crates, while others are commercial products with a pressure-sensitive clamp that releases at a specified depth. What Lowe is trying to do now is make sure people who fish learn how to use these devices. That's why he and Tom Raftican, president of the Sportfishing Conservancy, have joined a dozen sport fishermen in

When the boat reaches a reef known for its rockfish, they drop anchor and a dozen anglers bait their hooks. One of them is Nick Mackshanoff, who's been fishing a lot since he retired a few years ago. "If there's water, I fish," he says. "Fresh or salt, bathtubs, oceans, you name it, I fish." Like a lot of sport fishermen, Mackshanoff is concerned about overfishing and bycatch, fish that are caught unintentionally and die. "Something has to be done," he says, "or 10, 20, 30 years from now there's not going to be any fish. Period." Mackshanoff has never used a descending device, but he's seen one on YouTube. "They were using this for calico bass, and it was minimal harm on the fish and quick release back in the ocean again," he tells me. "I think it's kind of neat." As we're talking, another angler reels in a bocaccio rockfish that's too small to keep and is showing all the signs of barotrauma. He hands the fish to Lowe, who clamps its lower lip to a descending device the size of a pocket knife. Lowe uses a fishing rod to lower the fish, device, weights and a camera into the water. Later, we watch a video of the rockfish's descent. By the time it is about 50 feet down, the fish's eyes are returning to their sockets and its stomach is no longer protruding from its mouth. Before long, the fish appears to return to life. "You can see it kicking, it's trying to swim away," Lowe says. Then the clamp releases and the fish is gone. "Another successful release," Lowe says. The impact of descending devices could be substantial because there are more than 10 million marine recreational fishermen in the U.S. who catch more than 345 million fish a year, Raftican says. And these sport fishermen release nearly two-thirds of the fish they reel in, he says. So the Sportfishing Conservancy has been running workshops around the nation, explaining how and why fishermen should use descending devices. It's an easy pitch to make, Raftican says, because fishermen want to preserve their sport. "I love to fish, and I'd like to see my kids and grandkids out there fishing too," he says.

BASS FISHING CONCERNS

Angling Trust – Marine -Wyvern Division Open Shore Slapton, South Devon, on 4th January 2015.

Cornwall - IFCA have received a large volume of emails and phone calls recently from a range of interested parties, in relation to the future of bass stocks within Cornish inshore waters. We share those concerns, in particular, for that part of the bass stock which migrates around the southern half of the UK and out to mid English Channel. Cornwall IFCA anticipates that the European Commission will make an announcement on managing bass fishing effort in EU waters very shortly. We are waiting to act until it has received this and any subsequent action or direction by Defra. Any European or national measures will set the context within which all relevant IFCAs will then have to explore and develop potential management options within the 6nm limit around the English coast.

Cornwall IFCA already has two distinct sea areas where the use of gillnets is specifically restricted to protect aggregations of bass and throughout its district it already imposes a larger minimum bass size than in the majority of the EU fishing area.

During 2015, working with neighbouring IFCAs, we will be considering a range of potential options to secure the sustainable exploitation of bass.

However, it is clear that the only way to make significant progress with bass conservation is for strong EU wide control measures through which relevant Member States would need to act accordingly, with IFCAs in England being heavily involved in the making and enforcement of fishing regulations which will apply to their inshore waters.

HONITON SAC

Winner Nick Green with the Sponsor Julian Shambrook After a week of rough weather, the good forecast of a dry mild day and the promise of quality fish, resulted in a another good entry of 120 competitors fishing the Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival, at the popular South Hams Beach of Slapton. As is expected the fish were obliging with good catches of dogfish and whiting in the last two hours made it a busy task for the organisers, but despite this the results were announced within an hour of the close of scales at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham. David Rowe on behalf of the organisers thanked the main sponsor Anyfish Anywhere Ltd a major fishing tackle manufacturer, based in Torquay for their continued support, also the competitors many of who had travelled from Bristol, Weymouth and beyond. He confirmed that any money raised from the event would be ploughed back into the work of the Division on behalf of sea all anglers. Thanks were also extended to the Church House Inn for their hospitality. In addition the organisers are grateful to the Devon & Severn IFCA and the local fisherman who removed his pots seaward by 300 yards to prevent any inconvenience or conflict with the anglers. The worthy winner was local angler Nick Green from Plymouth with a combination of a near specimen Mackerel and whiting to amass 175.86%, He was presented with the top prize of £200 and the Brixham Bowl. The other tackle prizes were valued at over £800 and were awarded down to 14th place, these were presented by sponsor, Julian Shambrook of “Anyfish Anywhere”. All fish brought to the scales were returned or used for the table. The Division promotes the Angling Trust “Take Five” anti litter campaign and encourage all anglers to leave the beaches cleaner than they found them.
