www.snowbee.co.uk EU MINISTERS AGREE A BETTER DEAL FOR BASS STOCKS BUT ANGLING BODIES CLAIM THE POLITICAL FIX WAS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY On the 13th December in Brussels, EU fisheries ministers came up with a deal that recognises that targeted netting for threatened bass stocks is no longer an acceptable form of fishing. At the 'Fishing Opportunities' meeting for 2017, proposals from the EU Commission calling for an end to netting for bass - which had the wholehearted support of recreational fishing organisations and conservation bodies - were discussed late into the night. The politicians agreed to restrict bass fishing to commercial hook and line and recreational angling only save for a series of over generous bycatch 'allowances' which anglers have slammed as a political fix. Recreational fishing rules for bass remain the same at one fish a day per angler for the latter half of the year. A proposed monthly bag limit for anglers was rejected meaning that anglers have once again been disproportionately affected when they have by far the lowest impact on stocks and deliver the greatest economic benefit from the fishery. Commercial trawlers are to be allowed a 3% bass bycatch - well in excess of the suggested 1% and fixed gill nets are to be restricted to a bycatch allowance of 250kg a month. Currently they have a monthly vessel allocation of 1,300 kg. The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting this week followed the recent fisheries debate in the House of Commons where strong representations were made in favour of the Commission's proposals to help rebuild bass stocks following the ICES assessment for 2017. It also follows a strong campaign by the Angling Trust, Bass Anglers' Sportfishing Society and other conservation organisations which saw over 11,000 people signing a national Save Our Sea Bass petition. Martin Salter, National Campaigns Coordinator for the Angling Trust said: "This looks like a shoddy political fix when set against the ICES advice for a complete moratorium and the Commission's original proposals for a hook and line and recreational only fishery not exceeding 1,000 tonnes per annum.
WINNER Dale Brenton with a 30lb cod see page 25 for full story
"However, we should be pleased that netting has been brought down by 80% from a 1,300kg per month allocation to 250kg monthly bycatch allowance. Whilst progress has been made, once again the politicians failed to follow the science and failed to do what is really needed to rebuild our threatened bass stocks. We intend to fight on."

MCB Seafoods Newhaven And Lisa, Local Independent Sea Anglers, Are Pleased To Announce A Fishing Line Recycling Initiative In Sussex. Recycling is now part of all our lives and yet there is no current route for Sea and Freshwater Anglers to recycle used and waste fishing line It is estimated that there are over 4 million anglers in the UK and if they all only change 100m of line per year that is a staggering amount of nylon line. Currently most anglers dispose of their line in an appropriate manner but it still ends up in landfill. This is, we believe, the first scheme in the UK which offers a clear destination and an identifiable end product for recycled fishing line. Plastix, a Danish recycling company collect the line from MCB.
Harry Owen (MCB) Steve Tapp (Lisa) Sam Wyatt (Tools n Tackle)
The scheme was officially launched at Tools n Tackle Bridge Street Newhaven in October 2016. Window stickers and bins are now in participating tackle shops. LISA members have funded the first 10 bins. Harry Owen at MCB and LISA are exploring funding options to extend the scheme in the UK. This is a very positive add on to MCB's innovative Ghostnet scheme which recently received national TV coverage. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07v6yb3 www.mcbseafoods.org Enquiries Please contact Harry Owen at MCB Seafoods (g.h.owen@aol.com) or Steve Tapp at LISA( Lisa4sussex@outlook.com)

We believe that most of the retailers taking part will offer a discount on new line purchases when used line is recycled. Participating retailers are listed below although the scheme will be extended to any Tackle shops who wish to participate Phase 2 Line recycling bins will also be placed at common fishing marks along the coast subject to council and structure management's approval. All collections will be undertaken by LISA member volunteers.
COLEMAN
The first bag of recycled line en route to Denmark
With some time on my hands lately I've found myself hunting around the Bristol Channel in search of some prime cod. Now we all know that some of the most productive times to target these fish is during the hours of darkness. We all own head torches of varying quality as they are a fundamental piece of equipment while fishing this time of year but I recently had the chance to try out one of Colemans new products the 2 Way Panel Light. I must say that I found it incredibly useful. The user has the choice of either a lamp function or a standard torch but what what makes this product stand out is the fact it has an incredibly strong magnet with a metal clip located on the back of it making it ideal to hang up when using a beach shelter or the likes. The lamp function provides a more than adequate wide beam of light and the AA batteries that are provided some how just go on and on. Another use I found for it it was to situate it onto my tripod with the beam facing the rod tips. This enabled me to sit there without my head torch on happily watching the tips bounce around. This really is a versatile and hardy piece of kit. For the budding beach anglers out there this is a must for your tackle box as its small enough to tuck away and at around £20 it won't break the bank either. Incorporated into the design is Colemans new Battery Lock function which stops you accidentally switching the light on and draining the power. The 2 Way Panel Light would be ideal as a last minute stocking filler if you're running out of ideas! You can get more details by visiting their website www.coleman.com.

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS
THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
ABSOLUITLY tons of fish around but unfortunately not the right ones, we are being plagued with phone calls for potential bookings all starting with the same sentence any cod around yet skip !! and I can only give the same answer no, we have had the odd small codling here and there but nothing like it should be and as I understand it the same in many east coast ports. But it’s not the end of the world and there is still some good fun fishing out there with lots of whiting and I mean lots several rays although they have thinned out a bit now, and also loads of dabs have turned up which have been great fun on light tackle easily 100 fish a day being caught obviously not all keepers but a welcome addition to our catches at the moment. Many of these fish are in the estuary so a comfortable days fishing is assured even if the wind is blowing. We are

still hoping the cod will turn up & maybe it will be a spring run who knows but keep reading SAN and I will give you the truth no bull or log onto our web site at www.sophieleacharter.co.uk for up to the minuet reports. One of our well known charter skippers has decided to hang up his welly’s this year a very well-known pioneer of up tide fishing John Rawl, his boat Dafney Carrol was sold last month, however we can’t get rid of him as he is still honouring some of his old party bookings using other skippers boats in the harbour which I am delighted with as it will be a different Thames estuary without him. So here we are again coming to the end of our season I hope the readers out there have enjoyed my reports and I wish you all a very healthy happy Christmas and new year.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
After what seemed like an endless cycle of winds coming out of the E/SE, the recent return of SW winds has resulted in a marked improvement in local shore sport and at very last it looks as though things are on the up and none more so in the Tamar. A recent short evening session down at Devils Point produced a cracking Cod of 10-1 for Rob Wheaton which is now the clear leader in the South West Sea Baits shore cod comp whilst fishing accomplice Mike Hodge landed a nice bass of 5-8. On the same evening Castaways SAC member Stephen Gray landed a nice bass of 6-13 which was returned after weighing. As well as the odd cod the Tamar is currently producing a good stamp of heavyweight pouting with local pout ‘expert’ Mark Bryce leading the way with a fish of 1-15 which was the best specimen in the latest round of the Plymouth Shore League Competition. The second best placed specimen during the weekend was a cracking Small Eyed Ray of 11lb from Gary Andrews of Roving Rods SAC and third a nice Bullhuss of 12-3 from Pat Fulton of Castaways SAC. Up until the recent increase in temperatures anglers making the trip up to Kingsbridge to target flounders were finding some good numbers of fish although the average size was quite small. Steve Arnold and Stewart Gray fished a short flood tide session in the estuary and were rewarded with 13 fish in total although the largest was only 2-2 and most being in the region of between 1-4 and 1-8. A recent trip up to the estuary by myself resulted in fish of a similar size whilst the warmer temperatures resulted in problems with bait-robbing crabs. It is hoped that perhaps some larger fish will start to show as we get closer to the Xmas break. If not it may be a case of trying
alternative rivers such as the Yealm, Plym or Exe in order to track down that elusive 3 pounder which all flounder anglers crave each winter. We are now approaching that time of the year when Xmas flounder comps occur and with several taking place this weekend including the RNLI Comp on the River Teign and the Plymouth Angling Centre Xmas Flounder Comp I am hopeful of reporting back on the capture of some decent flatties in next month’s report. Finally whilst on the subject of flounders I would like to put out an appeal to anyone fishing Kingsbridge who may stumble across a pair of well-used ‘soiled’ salopettes. If you do happen to find them then could you please return them to Tony ‘Imodium’ Green of South West Sea Baits. I understand he has put up a packet of beads as a reward for their safe return.
Blonde Ray on Sea Angler 2
Bullhuss on Sea Angler 2
The recent strong winds have prevented many boats from venturing out to the wrecks. However during a recent lull in the winds Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 took a group of anglers from Seafarers SAC on an inshore trip targeting rays and was rewarded with a number of double figure blonde and small eyed rays. Several good sized huss were also caught during the trip. Another boat finding some fish locally is the Crusader who has been running a limited number of evening trips up the River Tamar and has been finding some nice cod, rays, whiting and eels. With some settled weather after the Xmas breaks the local boats should be able to start targeting the heavyweight pollack on the offshore wrecks.

AZORES

BRITS DELIVER IN THE AZORES
When we got back to the Clube Naval, we were approached by the organisers and they explained they had sent the photographs of our fish to the Island University for formal identification. It turned out that our fish was not a blue marlin but a long billed spearfish and even though spearfish exist in many oceans, they are not abundant anywhere, and are rarely caught.
By Martyn Pratt
As the 2016 UK summer started to draw to an end, clearly marked by the kids returning to school, my thoughts inevitably turned to our great Azorean friends in the mid-Atlantic, some 800 miles west of Portugal. Regular readers will recall that in September each year the Islands hold their International Big Game Fishing Tournament sponsored by Azores Airlines. (Previously Azores Airlines was known as SATA, but I for one think the name change is a good move and does exactly what is says on the tin now!) So, over the years that I have been fortunate enough to attend, I have cemented many solid friendships with the returning participants and hosts alike and was looking forward to once again seeing my friends. On arrival at Ponta Delgada airport, we were picked up and whisked off to the brand new Azor Hotel (www.azorhotel.com) overlooking the marina and the Clube Naval where all the fishing activities were based. The hotel is very comfortable with helpful staff, modern rooms, quirky old technology decoration, a great breakfast selection, and a stunning rooftop pool and bar. As usual, competition proceedings started with the Captain’s meeting, so we made the 2 minute walk from the hotel to the Clube Naval. Before we had even set a foot inside, we bumped into the Rabao’s crew who we had fished with previously. Seeing Carlos Linhares and David Rodrigues started off the warm, genuine hugs and greetings that went on for a full 10 minutes before we had worked our way through everyone. One of the organisers said to me that it felt like a family reunion rather than a fishing tournament; I couldn’t agree more! At the meeting we learned we were again to fish as the Press Team with our old father and son friends from the USA in the shape of Matt and Matthew Baryshyan. Further, we were once again to fish on the excellent boat named Frontino with our friends Diogo Paiva and Eduardo Lopez. After the formality of the meeting, our boat crew discretely shared the plan they had put together including use of some local diver’s knowledge. The idea was to fish the first day for blue marlin on an offshore bank. This would give us 300 points per fish. On the second day we would make the 120 mile round trip to neighbouring Santa Maria where divers had seen large numbers of big wahoo that would count as a point per pound in weight and increase our first day lead. On the last day, the plan was to clinch victory a little closer to home by taking another marlin or even tuna. With such excitement showing on the guys faces, we eagerly agreed. So, at 7.30am the following day, we heard the starting call over the radio and watched the fleet speed off. On Frontino, both engines were opened up to top cruising speed and we began the dash out to the Marta Prata bank.
Once at the bank, we rigged 5 rods coupled with Tica Team 80R reels. The normal variety of muppets, plugs and teaser lures were used and we were at last fishing. Usually a draw takes place for the order in which individuals in the team fish when strikes are encountered. This system means that whoever draws the higher numbers has, in effect, a considerably diminished chance of actually having a go at fishing if the sport is slow. So, this year I suggested that it might be better if we adopted a system by which we each had an hour on the rods before moving to the next drawn number. This would ensure even those
with the lower numbers would have their shift on the rods in only a few hours. The team agreed and as I’d drawn a mid-place, I sat and waited for my turn. Nothing happened for the first couple of hours but just into my turn, the ratchet of a rear stern reel screamed into life. All other rods were soon brought in and I was at last fighting a fish whilst the crew reported the strike on the radio. I could instantly tell it was not a large fish and after 15 minutes or so the creature was brought alongside. Having never actually come face to face with a marlin
Spearfish belong to the billfish family and are subdivided into four types. These are Tetrapturus angustirostris also known as the short nosed spearfish. Tetrapturus belone known as the Mediterranean spearfish. Tetrapturus georgii known as the round scale spearfish and finally, Tetrapturus pfluegeri known as the long bill spearfish. All spearfish are pelagic, deep water fish inhabiting the open areas of temperate and tropical oceans. Capable of reaching a maximum weight of around 100 pounds, 20 to 60 pounds is more the norm for this species. They are surface feeders taking small and medium sized fishes and squids, including mahimahi, sauries, flying fish, needlefish and pilot fish.
I was happy to be guided by the boat crew and my more experienced team mates and they concluded that I had caught what looked to be a juvenile blue marlin which would be worth 300 points. The main reason for their conclusion was that whilst the fish was small for a blue marlin, and more like the size of a spearfish, its bill was much longer than that normally seen on spearfish in the area! Personally I was happy to have caught anything and after getting the obligatory photographs we released the fish and celebrated noisily! As this was the first fish of the competition, it meant that in the event of a tie for first place, we would take the honours by virtue of the first catch. Spirits were riding high as the plan seemed to be working! No further fish were caught that day, so when we arrived back in the marina, we headed up to the Clube to present our pictures to the organisers in order for our catch to be confirmed. After some deliberation, the four man adjudicating panel agreed that the pictures did appear to be of a juvenile blue marlin and so we were in first place after day one. The following day was a rest day and our hosts took us for a relaxing trip around the island including time at the commercial fishing dock, many splendid coastal views, lunch in a typical Azorean restaurant followed by an afternoon looking at boiling volcanic mud pools and a tea plantation. With the forecast looking better for the end of the week, it was decided day three would also be a rest day so we were taken to enjoy the majestic scenery including a picnic lunch in a volcanic crater that was ten square miles in size. In the peace and tranquillity of that beautiful setting, I could not begin to imagine the force of an eruption that had blown such a massive hole in the island! Come day 4, we were back to the fishing and hoping to increase our first day lead in line with the plan.
With a 4 hour steam to get to Santa Maria island where the wahoo had been seen, I went below to catch up on some sleep in one bunk, whilst Eduardo did the same in the other bunk. After a while I was awakened by a very loud repetitive banging on the hull and the rapid deceleration of the engines! In seconds, Eduardo had leapt from the bunk, donned a snorkel and mask and had disappeared off the stern and below the water. Very soon he returned with the culprit, a large piece of woven rope that had probably been part of a boat’s fender. Thankfully neither the prop or the rudder was damaged and we were soon on our way again but it served to remind us of the vulnerability of boats to the Ocean’s debris!
First up on the rods was Lucy, so she was pleased when a reel started to pay out line. We realised it was not a huge fish but hoped for the wahoo we had intended to catch. However, the fish turned out to be a bonito and, although very good to eat, did not count in the competition! Soon after, we had another strike from a much larger fish and Matt Senior took the reel. With several runs from the fish, it began to tire and Matt eventually started to gain line. However, it was not to be as the line parted and Matt reeled in what was left.
Examining the end, we could see the line had been bitten! It seems that when a wahoo is hooked, often that fish is followed by others who see the glint from the swivel connecting the trace to the leader and they bite at it assuming its edible, thereby freeing their mate. Bad luck but we reset the gear and carried on, at least knowing the wahoo were in residence. Frustratingly though, this scenario was repeated twice more, each time losing what felt to be good fish. As our time there was up we left and made the long trip back to San Miguel. During our voyage, we heard over the radio that the Shanghai had caught and released a blue marlin. This meant that they like us would have 300 points, but as ours was first caught, we were still in the lead.
However, regardless of their rarity, spearfish are only worth 150 points so we were now in second place to the Shanghai’s blue marlin. With this news, I was pleased to hear I’d caught something out of the ordinary, but was disappointed for the Press Team and crew of Frontino. It did however mean we had everything to fish for on the final day! With the awards dinner that evening, the final day’s fishing was slightly shorter at 11 hours so we hurriedly made our way to the bank in the hope we’d get a 300 point blue marlin, or at least a 150 point white marlin to clinch the win. As is apparently traditional on the island, a good luck ‘witch’ was carved from a local melon by Matt senior and placed on a rod as we sped to the fishing grounds. However, the ‘witch’ didn’t work and we eventually returned to the marina tired but content that we’d be awarded second place at the dinner. What I didn’t realise was that, as the angler who caught the fish, I would be awarded a little marlin trophy and that was a real joy for me after trying to catch something for the past four competitions!
So, what with us in second place, it was good to see first place awarded to Daniel White from Leeds who had visited the Azores with his family earlier in the year and had decided to come back alone to fish the competition. Until his encounter with the blue marlin, the biggest fish he’d caught was an 8lb barbel so I hope Daniel doesn’t think big game fishing is always so easy! Finally, we were pleased to hear the Best Photograph award was given to my journalist friend Paul Sharman who kindly allowed me to use the picture he’d took of the blue marlin Daniel had caught. So, all in all, it was a good week for the Brits abroad, but best of all, it was great to catch up with our old friends and make some new ones as well!

Second was Dave Rudland with 15 ¼ oz, third Fred Wassell with 12 ¾ oz and joint fourth Gary Banfield and Sam Samson with 11oz. The biggest flat was plaice for Iain Smart of 12 ¼ oz and no round fish were recorded. Government Agency Highlights 'Major Adverse Effect' on Fish from Proposed Tidal Lagoon Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has revealed that, on the best available evidence, the proposed tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay could have a 'major adverse effect' on migratory fish due to injury as they pass through the turbines. In a letter to consultees, NRW estimates that 21% of salmon and 25% of sea trout, species of national importance, could be killed every year as they migrate to and from local rivers, mainly the Tawe, Neath and Afan. These estimates are far higher than the numbers provided by Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay (TLSB), the company promoting the scheme. TLSB has consistently claimed to the Angling Trust and Fish Legal and in their various planning applications that the impact on fisheries would be minor.

SEND YOUR PICTURES AND REPORTS TO editor@seaanglingnews.com
The information emerged just before the delivery to Ministers of the Hendry Review which was commissioned by the government to consider whether or not the proposed lagoons represent good value for money for electricity bill payers over the next century, and a Westminster Hall debate in parliament about lagoons this week. Publication of the review is expected at the end of the year. Smaller impacts are predicted on other migratory fish species but since these include shad, lamprey and eel which are deemed of international importance, these are also classed as “major adverse effects” by NRW. Moderate adverse effects are also predicted for some sea fish, namely cod, whiting and sandeel.
The predicted potential impact levels will be used by NRW in its determination of a Marine Licence which is required before the lagoon can be built, in the event that the government does deem the scheme good value for money. The developers have presented their business case around the construction of multiple lagoons including three, Cardiff, Newport and Bridgwater Bay, in the highly protected Severn Estuary. The impact of lagoons on fish will be a major consideration in the viability of these schemes, which would affect salmon, sea trout, shad, eels and lamprey migrating to and from the Rivers Wye and Usk. Both rivers have the highest level of international environmental protection designation. Other rivers would also be affected, including the Severn itself. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “Working with local angling clubs, we have continually challenged TLSB's assurances about the likely impact on fish from passing through the turbines and we welcome this statement from NRW which reveals the true impact of this highly risky scheme, using untested technology in a very sensitive environment. Fish are likely to be affected in other ways as well, including increased vulnerability to predation and having their migration critically delayed by being trapped inside the lagoon. We have expressed concerns about the various impacts of a lagoon in Swansea Bay on fish and TLSB's ability to mitigate these or even to monitor them effectively. NRW’s conclusions must cast doubt not only on the viability of the lagoon in Swansea Bay but of those proposed in even more environmentally sensitive areas near Cardiff, elsewhere in the Severn Estuary and around the UK coastline.”

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
In the last monthly report I had a little grumble about the lack of mixed fish coming to the net on our cod trips. I’m happy to say it all changed fairly rapidly, only a couple days later I was eating my words as we landed about 70 congers in one day in between a few cod, I’m not sure I have ever seen so many congers in one sitting before. As well as the snakes, they have quietened down a bit since that day, we have seen the start of the whiting on the patches of sand off Poole. Gerry Reed’s 3lb 4oz fish is leading the charge with that at the moment with plenty of fish around the 2lb mark taking the mackerel baits as well. On a recent
trip Pete Knight braved some stiff south-westerly winds and was rewarded with a 10lb cod, 14lb pollock and new PB bass of 10lb 4oz all in one day. Probably our biggest of the year so far. Our last mention this month goes to Ed Braund who managed a 18lb 4oz undulate on light tackle followed on the next drop by a 22lb blonde, 40lb of ray in 2 drops not a bad way to start your day. From all of us at Silver Spray Charters thanks for making 2016 such a great year, merry Christmas and tight lines for 2017. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Poole Cod competition organised by Poole Sea Angling Centre was fished on the 27th November and was won by Mike Fox fishing on a private boat with a cracking Cod of 24lb 6ozs, the weigh in and presentation were held at the Marina Club who provided a fine buffet to end the day on. Many thanks to Andy for his hard work in organising it and Debbie for the catering. Keith Trim (Albion SAC) managed to bag a prize in the comp fishing aboard the Mistress Linda with a cod of 11lb. As a bonus Andy is organising another competition to be fished on Tuesday 27th December for more details contact Andy Robins at Poole Sea Angling 01202676597. The fishing towards the eastern end of Poole Bay and the IoW marks has produced some spectacular congers catches with in excess of 60 being landed per trip although not large they do provide plenty of sport but can ruin the day if you are targeting Cod. On 1 trip recently I decided to drop a bait over and as a bonus I was rewarded with a nice Cod of 14lb 4ozs my 1st of the winter. Fred Smith and Dave Lynes have both landed 25lb + Cod fishing big cuttle baits on pennel rigs. The Channel Whiting have been in abundance and charter boats have enjoyed good catches with fish up to 3lb 4ozs being landed,
these seem to be well spread across the Bay and as the end of the month arrives the bigger Cod should make an appearance with anglers looking to be the 1st to catch one over 30lb. The start of the Winter series Flounder trips on board the Mistress Linda was fished in flat calm extremely cold conditions with occasional ice patches coming down the river from Wareham, the Flounders were not plentiful but over the course of the trip we did manage 12 the best being 1lb 12ozs. In January the Flounders will start to move from the upper reaches of the Harbour and if it follows last year’s pattern the catches will improve in quantity and quality. Towards the end of January during the weaker tides we will start to seek the Spurdogs and Blonde Rays on the offshore banks. The Recreational Sea Angling Committee next meet at the end of January if you have any questions you would like answered please email me at ‘philip.higgins@virginmedia.com’ and I will raise get them added to the agenda. Wishing everyone Seasonal Greetings and good fishing next year Philip Higgins Mistress Linda Charters

Caribbean Lobster Fisheries Sustained By 'Dark Carbon'
Sea Angling News, January 2017
Minehead Cod Challenge Report by organiser Keith Wigglesworth On a crystal clear December morning 61 anglers on 7 charter boats set forth from Minehead Harbour on the annual Minehead Cod Challenge, this year sponsored by West Coast Tackle of Watchet and the Sea Angling News. Conditions proved to be perfect for the competition, which would be decided by the angler who caught the greatest length of cod on the day. Local angler Dennis Little, fishing aboard Teddy Boy II, took the first prize by catching 9 cod for a
total length of 2.83m with Steve Chilcott, on Alykat, coming second with 8 fish for 2.36m. The Heaviest Cod Cup was won by Lance Edwards on Fulmar with a beauty of 13lb 4oz, just pipping Craig Willis on Teddy Boy II, who had one at 12lb 15oz. In total 96 cod were caught with a combined length of 32.5m. With 17 cod, the top boat and the winner of a Christmas hamper was skipper Michael Webber on Teddy Boy II .

Thanks also go to Phil for organising it, John for taking the photo, John and Haydn Cole (Pembroke) for sorting the bait and the staff of the Bromborough Hotel, Birkenhead, for their hospitality and help with bait storage and of course the anglers for turning up and making it a very friendly and successful event. EFSA Wales Mersey Cod Competition 2016
Once again the weekend of December, 10th & 11th, saw the Annual Welsh Cod (Boat) Championships fished out of Birkenhead in the River Mersey, for the 13th year running. The number of competitors was down this year as we only had one boat, though it was big one having previously lived life as the Burtonport to Arranmore Island ferry before moving to the Mersey, as our second boat had to be withdrawn at the last minute as the skipper had medical problems precluding his availability. We do, however, wish him a speedy recovery as some of us have known him for more years than we care to remember. Since, as usual, there was no minimum size, this being a catch and release event, catches of Cod varied from 24cm in length for the smallest to 54cm for the largest caught over the two days. This was on the Sunday whilst 3 at 53cm were boated on the Saturday. The weather over the two days was fabulous, warm dry and calm, unusual for December but, if this is global warming, bring it on! So, Saturday morning dawned and at 8:30AM the boat filled up with eager anglers ready for the off. After day 1, regular attendee from Essex and EFSA England member, Barrie Senior (Maldon) was in the lead with 6 Cod for 262 points holding sway from Welsh International Boat angler, John O’Connor (Narberth), with 5 Cod for 232; and Tina Lustig (Pembroke), also with 5 Cod but for 229 points. The three of them had a nip and tuck battle all day on a day that all anglers caught with a total of 30 Cod boated and measured.
2016 SLO R12 Winner.
winning him the Gold pin by a street. He also had the aforementioned longest fish on day 2 taking the pool for that category, both on that day and overall. In the tight tussle for the minor placings, last years winner, Alan Porter (Hatfield Peverel) also from Essex, but an EFSA Wales member, who was in fourth after day 1 with 4 Cod for 207 points, landed a further 3 Cod to give him a total of 7 Cod for 348 points comfortably taking the Silver pin. The scrap for the Bronze pin was something else in that only 4 points separated the eventual third from the fifth placed angler. On day 1 Joe Holland (Ruabon), an EFSA Wales life member from North Wales, like Alan, also managed 4 fish but for 185 points and his 2 fish for 90 points on day 2 was enough to take him past John and Tina into the Bronze pin position, Tina and John only managing to boat one fish each on the Sunday and with Tina’s being the larger it took her into fourth with John relegated to fifth. Their was some consolation for John as he was one of the 3 that had the longest fish on the Saturday along with Alan and Philip Lustig (Pembroke).
Rumours of large cod, conger, pollack and whiting from the day before saw Arthur heading out to the Needles to anchor a series of gulleys approximately a mile offshore. Unfortunately a stiff North Easterly wind gusting force 6 at times meant that we were unable to head out any further.

Large Boat Competition – 11th December 2016. Ten members fished the first large boat competition of the Club year aboard “Private Venture” skippered by Arthur Savage. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for once and fishing was comfortable in the warm winter sun. Several marks were fished several miles to the east of the Needles and a steady stream of fish came throughout the day with one side of the boat fishing noticeably better than the other. Alec Harmer continued his good form and managed several thornback rays, good sized-conger and fine whiting and went on to win the competition- his third successive win in as many competitions. Sadly, no cod were caught; however, good sport was had with prolific numbers of congers throughout the day with Derek Smith landing the largest at just over 20lb. Fish caught were conger, dogfish, pout, thornback skate and whiting. 1st: Alec Harmer 132 points; 2nd: Roland Blomfield 71 points; 3rd: Brian Dawkins 64 points; 4th: Derek Smith 64 points (less fish); 5th: Robin Lane 61 points; 6th: Arran Harmer 33 points; 7th: Jane Hopkins 32 points; 8th: Nelson Phillips 24 points; 9th Harry Gray 21 points; 10th: Anton Emblem 8 points.

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas
Large numbers of flounder have been landed during November and early December with sport peeking following a big spate in mid November that flushed away the bait robbing crabs. Dan Miles Redmore landed one of the biggest flounder to be caught from the Taw estuary in recent seasons a huge flattie that weighed 2lb 10oz 3/8oz. Combe Martin SAC member John Shapland fished a session and landed a fine brace of Taw flounder weighing 1lb 14oz and 1lb 10oz. Dennis Toleman won one of Triple Hook Clubs Open Flounder Competition with a flattie of 1lb 113/4oz. Robbie Hancock was runner up with a flounder of 1lb 101/2oz and third John Vaughan with a flounder of 1lb 95/8oz. A Charity Competition based at the Rolle Quay Inn raised over £700 for Willand House. David Jenkins landed three flounder for a total weight of 5lb 123/4oz to win the flounder competition. The bag included a fine flounder of 2lb 61/2oz that won the biggest flounder of the day prize. Taz Wotton and his mother Marilyn dominated Bideford and District Angling Clubs Cyril Petherick Memorial Competition with three fine flounder. Taz took first and third with flounder of 1lb 131/2oz and 1lb93/4oz his mother taking second place with flounder 1lb 121/2oz. Bull huss and conger have put a decent bend into several anglers rods with several huss making double figures. The first spurdog of the winter have been
tempted from deep-water rock marks this is a good omen so early in the season as these fish normally show after Christmas. A bitter North East wind blew down through the Bristol Channel making fishing conditions difficult for the dozen who booked into Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Lee to Lee Competition at the end of November. I was fortunate to take top spot with a specimen bull huss weighing 10lb 9oz that was tempted on high water using an Ammo Bluey, mackerel and squid cocktail presented on a pennel rig using 6/0 Sakuma Manta Extras. The first big conger have succumbed to anglers baits, Daniel Welch landed a 20lb 12oz specimen and Chris Slade landed a 21lb 11oz conger to win an Appledore Shipbuilders 24 hour competition. Jeremy Johnson and Antony Jestin followed a hunch and set out with their lure rods and enjoyed some fine sport landing nine bass between 2lb and 2lb 8oz, nothing particularly big but a great catch at the time of the year when most anglers have put such tackle away. In these times of changing climate it is vital that anglers experiment and try to think outside of the conventional, fish according to the prevailing conditions, challenge normality and experiment. Offshore anglers have enjoyed sport off Ilfracombe aboard John Barbeary’s Bluefin with bull huss, spurdog and conger dominating.

What a difference a month makes, still plenty of rays, eels and dogs in the bay but at last the cod have turned up too. Not loads but enough to keep things interesting and of a good average size. Whiting are also showing with a few better ones approaching 2lb. The winds have also been a bit kinder, we even fished a couple of comps since the last report. Sunday 27th November was the Wilf Dunstone Trophy fished as a cod comp and pools being best specimen. Another good turnout with 8 boats carrying 16 seniors and 1 junior. Most boats fished in the lee of Brean Down to get some shelter from the brisk ENE winds. Fish were plentiful but only 5 cod weighed in with Nigel Devey the winner with a cod of 12lb 1oz and 67%. 2nd was Aaron Devey with a cod of 9lb 4oz and 51% with Mike Sheppard 3rd with one of 2lb 12oz and 15%. Pools was won by myself with a flounder of 1lb 11oz and 96%. Other fish of note were a lsd of 3lb 2oz again to me, a 3 bearded rockling for John Quinn and a lsd of 2lb 4oz for junior Jake Wharton. Andy Georgiou managed to sneak out midweek in early December from Portishead and had a cracking day in the sun catching 4 cod to 10lb and a few thornies. Sunday 11th December was our Xmas Fayre and Top Boat Trophy. With a decent forecast 9 boats with 23
seniors and 1 junior steamed off in all directions to fish marks from Sand point to Dunster. Format was best specimen and pools was for the best cod. It was the busiest weigh in for some time with 11 cod plus a few other species. There were also a number of thornbacks over the minimum 10lb size that were returned at sea and a conger of 25lb for Stephen Saxby. Winner of the Xmas Fayre was Terry Garrett with a cod of 13lb 14.5oz and 77%. Second was Pete Watson with a whiting of 1lb 10oz and 76% and third was Fred Saxby with a cod of 12lb 9oz and 70%. Chris Lindsay weighed in a haddock of 1lb 8oz which is the first one i've seen from Burnham, he also dropped another at the side of the boat! Fish of the month for November was won by Richard Saxby with a flounder of 1lb 11oz. The first competition for 2017 is on Sunday 29th January and is the Presidents cup. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 19th January at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD
MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT
Sea Angling News, January 2017
by Dave Roberts
Decent weather has allowed Minehead boats a good run of charters. Inshore fishing for the old cod has remained sporadic to say the least though a few fish to well into double figures have graced the decks of most boats which have ventured forth. Many of the Alykat charter parties have chosen to fish for other species instead. The theory being why spend a fortune on worm baits in the hope that a cod or two may or may not come along when you can take out a bag of fish and squid and have a great day on the mixed grounds, of course, there is every chance of a cod there anyway!! Spurdogs have arrived in good numbers on the offshore rough patches. Also some really good conger
have made their presence felt with several specimens to well over 40lb taken. The eels and spurs will be making the most of the massive influx of herring and sprat that have channel in the past few weeks. Also, it is thought that the cod are feeding high in the shoals of bait fish, again making it difficult to tempt them on a traditional cod bait. Whiting also still showing with some decent fish to well over two pounds making an appearance from inshore grounds such as Porlock and Blue Anchor bays. Hopefully if the weather remains good, we will still have chance to find a big cod or two with the Christmas period as good a time as any!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL
BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Before I get on with this months report we would like too pay A tribute to Alan Sheperd who passed away recently, Alan was an extremely passionate angler, a founder member of Blackdown SAC here in the Channel and the Bristol Channel federation of sea anglers boat secretary more recently , where is successful reunited clubs back on board to fish the boat matches. Many anglers from far and wide would have known Alan, mainly from signing in and the presentation at the Blackdown opens, or fishing along side him while boat fishing. His passion for boat fishing was huge and his effort in local shore fishing events was unprecedented.

Back to this months report it's only been a couple of weeks since last month , as its an early print for Xmas. Again it's not been the most productive past few weeks we have experienced over the years on the codling front. Things have certainly improved a tad from last months report when I claimed serious commercial fishing pressure in the Irish and Celtic sea was to blamed, and I still sand by that. The area in and around Minehead has certainly seen better numbers of codling ranging from around a lb to 4lb, with recent competitions being won with 2 or codling in mixed bags. Further up Channel there seems to have been a better stamp of cod into double figures from various marks. We are now moving into the hot time for a decent cod and the signs from the boat anglers are that there's a half respectable number of doubles about. There's no doubt a few of these will venture in shore over the next few weeks to stand us shore anglers a good chance of bagging one. There are countless cod holes throughout the channel. Way to many to mention. The best advice I feel I could give is choose a couple of marks that you know have produced a good cod or two over the years and concentrate efforts on these areas. If you are unsure if you are new to the area or new to the sport just ask your local tackle and bait shop when you pop in to spend a few quid.

Porlock weir and Bossington beach can be productive this time of year for a good mixed bags of fish to keep the rods nodding. More recently a few spur dogs have been showing in this area Which is A bit different to what anglers are used to in general in this area from the shore, it would be nice to think they may be around for the next month or so.
editor@seaanglingnews.com
The coming month could see a specimen small eyed ray from the sandy low water marks around Minehead, every year it turns up one of the years best in this area , and you never know if you could find yourself hanging onto a big cod from here. Good luck to everyone getting out there and getting stuck into the cod fishing over the next month and hopefully there will be some respectable cod to report on next month. It just leaves me to say a big thank you to everyone that has contributed and shared their catches and photos over the past year for me to report on. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy fishy new year. Tight lines and happy hunting.
THE OLD SHIP AGROUND
Historic Harbour-side Venue
He enjoyed catching plenty of fish from Weymouth to Norway and more locally here in the Bristol Channel. He was a great man for our sport and has helped, guided and inspired lots of anglers young and old over the years . He was A great listener , who would always find time for anyone if they ever had a moan or a groan over something random that they thought he could help out with , and do his best to put right if he believed it was for the greater good for family or fish. Alan would also be there to congratulate someone for their success and their personal achievement. The Bristol Channel lost a great man on Tuesaday 13th December 2016. Rest in peace Alan , our thoughts here at SAN are very much with his family and friends at this very sad time. We all hope the tides are good for you up there.
Apart from the codling the thornback Ray fishing has been very good again with multiple catches between Watchet and Weston and beyond at times. There's also good numbers of sizeable whiting about with the best one so far reported being 3lb1oz (after it was gutted) . The Christmas into New Year around Minehead's gas works and harbour traditional gets it fair share of big whiting.

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs We are well in to the Cod season and it hasn't been the best by far. Albeit you need to be positive and keep those quality bait presentations going over the edge. My best trip so far this winter saw 6 Cod come aboard, an average is one or two . It is this time of year the Cod are starting to pile on weight, your next fish could be 30lb plus ! The whiting are thin on the ground at times, should you be lucky to find a good shoal there should be some decent sized ones amongst them. Most days there is plenty of action from Conger eels, Rays and the occasional winter Pollack. Bass fishing

is certainly worth a go. The last day of my 2015/16 “Catch and Release Bass competition”, Tony Askew caught a 13lb 3oz Bass which he had no hesitation of returning. The big fish fell to a 30g Black minnow and earned him a Free boat charter. I will be running the competition again for 2016/17. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all for your custom over the past year's, and wish you all a merry Christmas and Prosperous New year. Tight Lines John Skeggs (Last Laugh / Lymington)
WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This winter cod season hasn`t really gone to plan as the fishing started to fade after the week and a half of easterly winds. There has been pockets of fish being boated around the West Wight area but not the amount we would expect for this time of year. We haven't seen a fish over 30lb yet, however there has been one of 28lb caught from the Solent, and one of 28.5 from the Shingles area with no really big fish reported south of the Needles light yet, the biggest so far was one of 21lb. It would seem that the whole season is about four weeks late, as we have only just seen the arrival of( shed loads) of our first Conger eel with some up to 50lb plus and up to thirty fish a trip these will create havoc with your lovingly prepared cuttle and squid baits which get ripped to pieces, and with the amount of conger in the area it was surprising to see them reduce in number throughout the easterly winds. The other pointer to the season being late is the size of the Channel Whiting which at the moment average
around 1.5lb to 2lb, usually by this time we are seeing fish o 3lb to 5lb across the West Wight area. So lets hope the assumption is correct and the 30lb Cod arrive over the next four weeks with a bonus of a 5lb Channel Whiting. Tight lines and a merry Christmas to all Art Savage Private Venture.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, January 2017
Port Report December saw a number of quiet and pleasant days at sea. The trips that took place featured wrasse, bass and whiting sessions along with a short spell spent on the squid on the way home. Ivan Wellington, skipper of Weymouth based charter boat Top Cat, is our Weymouth/Portland wrasse expert and a day out with him will pretty well guarantee lively sport throughout the session. Ivan’s recent outing produced in the region of 40 to 50 wrasse with many in the 4lb to 6lb range with the best topping a very impressive 7lb. Wrassing with Ivan is totally different from the wrasse fishing with ragworm and small hooks which may come to mind for most anglers. This is 4/0 to 6/0 hooks, big baits featuring hard back or better still fiddler crabs. Hermit crabs are also a marvellous bait although they tend to attract the smaller wrasse. Now (December through to February) is big wrasse time. Give Ivan a call and have a chat about the tactics and tackle required. If Ivan is booked he will surely put you on to one of the other Weymouth skippers who you can be assured will have listened in awed appreciation at the Charter Skippers’ Wrasse Master Classes that Ivan gives to us. On the current Facebook posting about this most recent wrasse trip, I noticed the question asking if wrasse are any good for the table. The short answer is that we need to move away from this desire to eat everything and see our fish more as a valuable sporting resource. Wrasse is a prime example… of course it can be eaten and it may be that there is someone in the UK who will argue that it is tasty…but it is a classic example of a colourful and hard fighting fish which will be much better off photographed and released. Don’t forget to prick the swim bladder if it is exposed from either orifice…the release of the air will allow the wrasse to get back down to the sea bed. Today is Dec 15th as this report is written. A couple of days ago the bass fishing off Portland was sensational with the best fish reported in at a massive 8.3 kg. This came aboard one of the rod and line commercial bas boats as opposed to an angling boat. By now the news regarding the latest measures on bass retention for 2017 will be filtering through and as expected the recreational sector will continue to be penalised in the same way as 2016 in terms of what anglers are allowed to keep. So, we are increasingly made to question how we regard our hobby; is it primarily for recreation and sport (as we are able to accept for wrasse) or is the success of a sea angler’s day, as has been the tradition, marked by the size and quantity of the fish he brings home? The whiting have arrived. This is very good news especially as this popular fish descends on a couple of marks within a half hour steam of Weymouth Harbour. The main bank is a good holding ground from November through to February of a range of species. Expect an occasional cod but more likely a bass, smothhound, tope, various rays and, in the new year, an increasing amount of conger feeding out in ‘the open’. There are two large wrecks plus an area known as the Spoil Ground which has many ex-MOD items dumped here close to the Adamant Bank and these obstructions tend to hold a lot of conger which presumably come out to forage in the first two months of the year. So, in-between your whiting there is an entertaining range of larger fish to be enjoyed. 2017 will be upon us as this report is read. 2016 will probably be regarded by many as being a very difficult year for fish. We had a lot of turbot on our banks and over in the Channel Islands but the bulk of the flatfish were well undersized. The plaice are
no longer on the old mussel bed areas so 2015 and 2016 have been virtually devoid of this species yet 2016 was a very good year for shore anglers fishing along Chesil Beach. What plaice were caught came from marks close in to the beach but fishing here is totally unpredictable and is very much a case of being lucky on the day. The Pollack fishing on the wrecks in the January to Mark 2016 period was very good and, maybe because less cod arrived, good size Pollack were caught right through the summer months. There were some very productive offshore reefs which fished well for pollack in the summer months with live mackerel (if any could be found) finding the bigger fish.
Smoothound - Duchess II
Thornback ray - Duchess II
Cod saved the summer months again and the fish were much bigger than the 2015 run resulting in plenty of fish lost and anglers having to rediscover technical terms such as ‘drag’ and ‘clutch’ and how to use the facilities on the reels! The bream arrived very late as did the ‘autumn run’ of bass and now the whiting. What will be the pattern for 2017 and how will the challenges be faced? January will be all about the offshore wrecking for Pollack, the inshore fishing for whiting and general reef fishing for rays, conger and hounds. The bass will still be around probably well into February and maybe beyond…but be mindful of the various restrictions. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland will fish well for blonde rays and maybe turbot.
Steve Thomas with a cracking 18lb turbot - Duchess II
And there is of course the big specimen wrasse to target! So…there is still plenty to fish for. It will all be down to the few days of nice weather. Anglers who are fortunate enough to prioritise their fishing over such trivia as work and home life and are able to seize the opportunity presented by a nice calm winter’s day will enjoy some excellent fishing. For those booked on to the weekend trips, keep your fingers crossed!!

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD FINS-UP Early December we have been able to get out on a fair few occasions when the wind has dropped. We have been able to make the most of the limited daylight hours we have at this time of year, enjoying some chilly winter sunshine. Efforts have been concentrated both inshore and offshore. Plenty of species inshore at anchor to the west of Portland Bill including Tub Gurnard, Conger Eels, Undulate Rays, Thornback Rays, Garfish , Smooth-hound and Mackerel. The latest trip saw the arrival of Channel Whiting in good numbers. Sidewinder Sand Eels in various colours have been nailing some quality Bass and Pollock on bigger tides while inshore reef / wreck drift fishing.
On the right conditions, Weymouth Bay Squid have been around and although smaller in size, these are definitely the better eating variety. On the days we have ventured further offshore we have seen plenty of pollock, the biggest been 14lb and also some bonus Ling on baits at slack water. Pollock are beginning to roe up. The bigger fish will show up very soon. The winter new season Pollock fishing early this year was a good one. Excellent catches between January and April saw lots of sizeable fish between 16lb- 20lb (let’s hope we have a repeat of this in 2017)!! Still some dates available so check out the Fins-up website for availability.

ENGLAND MEN’S SHORE ANGLING TEAM BRING HOME SILVER AFTER NAIL-BITING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP last minute fish which put them up in their sections. “It was a very nail-biting time in the results room and was too close to make any assumptions. At one stage it looked as though we had blown it and were not going to make the medals at all but we managed a tenth place on the day which kept us in the silver medal place against Ireland’s brilliant last day win.
England Men’s Shore Angling Team landed the silver medal after a nail-biting final day at the FIPS-M World Shore Angling Championship in Wexford, Ireland. It was a trip of many twists from all-night matches catching lots of whiting to a full daylight match on the last day fishing for flounders. The practice day saw a steady performance from the team consisting of Bill Linfield, Ian Golds, Darren Newland, Saul Page, Richard Yates, Gareth Griffiths (reserve), and Malcolm Stote (manager) who used tactics and methods to enable them to confirm their plan of action for the Championships. Day 1 saw the team lying in fifth spot and the following day used full-on distance casting which proved to be a winning formula on Day 2. With Bill Lindfield and Saul Page fishing consistency throughout the first three days alongside Richard Yates' zone win on day 2 and a seventh place from Darren Newland things were looking promising for Team England. Day 3 saw the team finish in second place on the day, which put them in the lead overall going into the final day with a great chance of a medal. In the Individual stakes, Saul Page was in first place and Bill Lindfield in third. But the last day proved extremely difficult and as the day unfolded things were not going the team’s way and they dropped down very rapidly. Manager Malcolm Stote said: “Everyone else seemed to be catching steadily and it was devastating to watch as we lost ground everywhere but Ian and Darren both managed some

“Unfortunately, Bill and Saul’s consistency deserted them on the last day and they dropped out of the medals. The whole week was amazing and it was great to play a small part in this great team. “As there were 18 nations taking part the zones were very big and Gareth and I did the running trying to gather as much information as possible to pass on to the rest of the team. I would like to congratulate Team England on a hugely successful trip and our main sponsors Tronix Pro.”

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand Saved by the Dale…… You don’t need me to tell you that the fishing has been rather dire of late, not just along the 18 mile stretch of Dorset shingle, but across most of the UK. The odd fish that have been landed have been pretty good ones, but its fair to say that with the amount of anglers and rod hours etc it’s been slightly emotional. I recently set up at Abbotsbury for a live bait session after work, normally I find the fish are on the Whiting / Pouting by this time of year. I set up and cast out both rods on lug live bait stinger rigs. After 2 minutes I had 'tap tap' on both rods! There I was thinking 'lovely job' but 4 hours later I reeled in 2 cracking Whiting which had been untouched. This isn't the first time I have tried this and resulted with the same outcome. In last month’s feature I wrote that I had the feeling that maybe, just maybe, a 30lb Cod could be landed on Chesil this year. So imagine how happy I was feeling when I received a message at work from a mutual friend to Dale Brenton, saying Dale had just landed that 30lb Cod! I'm sure you have seen the photos.
Dale has kindly given me his report of his wonderful catch, to share with The Sea Angling News, Dales Catch Report from December 6th 2017....... "I fished at the Ferrybridge end of Chesil. I did the long walk, which is a killer as you may know and to be fair it was an awful day without a bite. Then all of a sudden I had a steady pull down on a pulley pennel, then slack line across the beach. When I eventually caught up with the fish I thought it was a Conger due to the fish taking line off my reel. Then the tell-tell 'Nod Nod' and I then knew it was a big Cod"

Dale then goes on to tell me that when he first seen the fish in the swell he could not believe his eyes. Dale was fishing alone so landing the fish was a massive achievement in the conditions.
Well it's been a hard month but great to see the harden souls landing a few fish across the page. Tight lines & Sharp Hooks
