www.snowbee.co.uk BASS ANGLER’S VIEWS SOUGHT THROUGH NEW SURVEY IN CAMPAIGN FOR REGULATION CHANGE The Angling Trust and Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society (BASS) are promoting a new online survey of bass anglers in England to assess the damage done by last year's restrictions on bass angling. The survey, organised through the University of Southampton by Alex Maydew, a Masters student and keen angler, takes less than five minutes and aims to evaluate the impacts that recent EU landing restrictions and strict bag limits have had on the fishing habits of recreational bass anglers. Bass anglers are justifiably angry at the unfair and wholly disproportionate restrictions that have been imposed on them by Fisheries Ministers across Europe, with a zero bag limit followed by a one-fish-only limit during the second half of the year. Their anger was compounded when increased vessel catch limits were awarded to inshore gill netters and hook and line fishermen with a four-month derogation from the sixmonth moratorium on bass landings. Martin Salter, National Campaigns Coordinator at the Angling Trust, said: “The Angling Trust and BASS are gathering evidence on the economic impacts on charter boat bookings, the tackle trade and the local economy of the unfair landing restrictions that were imposed on recreational bass anglers last December. We will be supporting a range of initiatives and undertaking a variety of surveys to assess this but we also need to hear from bass anglers themselves.” “We are asking anglers to find five minutes to complete the survey. All the information will be used to build a strong case that we can put forward to ministers to seek to influence the outcome of the Council of European Fisheries Ministers meeting in December 2016 to ensure that this time we get a better deal for bass and for bass anglers.”

WINNER This extremely rare angel shark was landed aboard Pwllheli based charter boat “Haf-Aled”. It weighed in at a gnats under 50lb and was caught by Jut Farrell on a mackerel fillet. After a quick photo this magnificent fish was returned un-harmed...

Survey creator Alex Maydew emphasised: “It’s fantastic to be working with bass anglers as part of my project. I have a keen interest in the conservation efforts surrounding the species and being able to work closely with organisations like the Angling Trust and BASS means that my efforts will have much wider significance. I work in the angling industry myself, and I completely empathise with the dissatisfaction that bass anglers feel.” https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/seabass2016

ANGLER AIRLIFTED FROM ROCKS AT EYEMOUTH The UK Coastguard received a 999 call at around 9:40 in the evening on 16th June from a member of the public saying that they could see an angler on the rocks who was completely cut off by the tide with waves reaching 3–4 meters in height around him. The Coastguard sent the two RNLI lifeboats from Eyemouth and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Eyemouth and Berwick to the area. When they arrived on scene it was clear that the conditions were too rough for either the Coastguard Rescue Teams or the Lifeboats to get to the angler. The Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter based at Prestwick was called to airlift the angler from the rocks.

The angler was airlifted from the rocks and was able to make his own way home.

Jolene Smith, Senior Maritime Operations Officer, UK Coastguard said: “As he was being rescued the waves around him were reaching 3-4 metres in height and there is no doubt he was at risk of being washed off the rocks. He was wearing hi-visibility clothing that meant we were able to locate him quickly. It really also critical for rock anglers to check weather conditions and tide times before heading out.” The UK Coastguard recommends that anglers in addition to hi-vis clothing, wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid and carry some means of communication for alerting the emergency services. Fortunately, in this case, the angler was spotted by a member of the public when it was clear he was in danger. If you think you see someone in danger along the coast or at sea please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

t's been a bit of a stop start month I think due to weather hound fishing so far has not been as good as last year but there will be plenty to come as it's still a bit early, it's also worrying that certain commercial netters are targeting this slow growing fish why I do not know as the market value is very poor and I do not think local stocks will sustain to much netting pressure because it's the big females they are hitting easy targets as this fish pushes up into certain estuary's to pup and the nets catch them as they are coming off the sands. Rays are still being caught most charter boats are avoiding the good marks for these as we have all had enough of them and so have the anglers plenty of bass

around though but as we all know we cannot take any fish at this time and all are being released it's as if they know. First of July we can take a bass each so ten anglers on the boat would be happy with that and ten fish is not a bad day especially if they are good fish. We were boarded last week by fishery's inspectors they searched every anglers tackle boxes and bags etc. but found nothing I thought that a search warrant was needed for this and I think had we pushed for it an interesting few hours could have ensued however we had nothing to hide so cooperated like you do.

BENETEAU BARRACUDA TOUR FINAL By Jim Whippy

UK team, l to r Fred Smith, Pete Smith, Jim Whippy and Richard Herbert Big match The first heat of the Beneteau Barracuda tour fished in Poole was quite an event with 20 The teams Barracuda 7 boats fishing out of Cobbs Quay, but it was put into the shade when the two Poole heat winners, Fred Smith and Pete Smith saw the scale of the final in La Rochelle, France. There were 43 International teams competing with 38 French teams and others from Germany, Denmark, Turkey, China, Russia and Belgium.

This event started four years ago with a Barracuda tour with owners all meeting up to show off their new boats in different ports all round Europe. The teams were issued with all the tackle they needed by Daiwa and Fiiish lures and the target was bass, both the European bass and the spotted bass. Hard fishing

The fishing proved extremely tough with very few bass caught. The UK team ‘Bits & Pieces’ caught just two in the first two days but this was sufficient to get them into the top twenty and the gold final fished on the third day. Another day with the bass proving pretty elusive but some very nice ballan wrasse grabbed their lures to break the monotony of continually casting soft lures for four hours solid. PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

June is traditionally one of the better fishing months but this year it does seem to be taking a while for things to really get going. Certainly the lack of mackerel on the south coast is a major cause for concern whilst it seems as though another year has gone by without the big garfish showing up. Hopefully we’ll see an improvement with these species by the time of the next report.

double figures. This good fishing should continue over the next few months. That’s it for this month – happy dipping!

The Kingsbridge Estuary continues to produce gilthead bream but it is very much a case of ‘feast or famine’ with very small shoals of fish meaning that they are there one day and gone the next. Most of the fish seem to be averaging around 2-3lb with the odd larger specimen. Crab and lug continue to be the best baits and now with most of the channels being chocka with weed it’s usually best to pick the medium-sized tides rather than the larger springs.

Mark Bryce Smoothie 14-3

Fishing for Small eyed rays continues to provide good sport for those anglers going out and targeting them. Castaways member Aaron Launce had a cracker of 10-10 whilst fellow members Anthony Edney and Martin Larkin registered fish of 10-3 and 9-11 respectively. Not to be outdone Rodbenders SAC member Joe Gardner fished a local South Hams rock mark and registered a new PB of exactly 10-0 which was released after weighing. Cod on Sea Angler 2

With smoothhounds now starting to show along the Bristol Channel shoreline members of Plymouth clubs have been making the trip up the M5 and have been rewarded with some good sport. Rodbenders SAC member Mark Bryce has made several recent trips ‘up North’ and has been rewarded with hounds of 11-10 and 14-3 whilst Mat Parry of Castaways got some good advice and fished a channel mark for a new pb hound of over 11lb. I fully expect to be reporting on some larger specimens in next month’s report. Malcolm Jones on Sea Angler 2 has been providing me with regular updates of the fish that have come over the gunnels of his charter boat and it does seem as though both the wreck and reef fishing has really taken off now. Sean Bacon of Seafarers SAC managed a nice eel of 57lb whilst members of the same club also recorded a number of good sized cod into

A 7 ¼ oz flounder for Paul Christopher.

GENERAL With May Rot! Lasting for over 2 months fishing has proved difficult, but there have been some good fish caught! The May winner of Anglers Den catch and release bass competition was Joe Plumstead. Joe was randomly pulled from the hat to win an exclusive Anglers Den specimen Hoody and a Black Rock beach reel. There have already been some entries for The June competition with an 11lb bass (weighed then released) caught by Andy Reeves. Some good quality fish have been caught by local anglers. Jan Sargeant landed a nice Dover Sole while fishing with husband Colin. Joe Plumstead caught a sizable Thornback Ray along Eastbourne seafront, unusual for this area!!. Paul Puplett caught a nice 8lb 12oz Smoothound in Normans Bay and Peter Cornwall also caught a nice smoothound od 6lb 8oz in Eastbourne. The mackerel have been scarce even from the boats so far! Both the charter boats and private boats from Eastbourne Marina have been catching plenty of plaice and now a few Turbot and Brill are starting to show.

We have had some cracking fishing inshore of late which has helped to fill some of the gaps left by the bass trips we can’t do until July. The bream have been of a really high quality so far with 3lb plus fish a daily occurrence rather than a rarity. I can’t wait to see what size they go up to when they arrive on the wrecks in August. Keeping us busy over slack water have been the tope which have now arrived in numbers as the may bloom starts to clear in the water and the mackerel, hopefully, become more abundant. As I mentioned earlier we are holding off on doing bass fishing until July but it’s been nice to see plenty

of them out on the ground taking bream, ray and even tope baits. I think hopefully this is a good sign for when our season with them finally starts. Elsewhere across the channel we have been getting some nice sized turbot on the banks, last trip saw 4 doubles in 2 days, as well as good numbers of brill. The cod have been such a good size on the wrecks so far that I can’t wait to start our long range Cherbourg trips next month to see what’s lurking a bit further afield. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The annual Poole Species Comp was fished in near perfect conditions with 24 teams taking part, this is a very competitive comp and plenty of practice goes in before the day which proved the case for the winning team Christchurch Angling Centre fishing on the day aboard M Mimms ‘Our Gemma’ who had done their homework and spent several days honing their teams tactics. A big thanks go to Lou and Sarah Medley for the time spent organising this comp and ensuring it ran smoothly on the day. The Dancing Ledge area has produced really good Bream catches with many fish over 3lb being landed along with some fine Rays, Poole Bay continues to provide good sport with plenty of Bream of varying size, Rays, Smooth hounds and many other species

nibbling the baits. The main species conspicuous by their absence are Mackeral at the time of writing this report they are very scarce and cannot be relied on for bait on the day any caught are a bonus. It is good to see Grey Gurnard being landed regularly. The outer marks have given great sport with good size Tope providing plenty of action and for those that like to test their strength Congers are the main target mainly up to the 60lb mark. The offshore wrecks continue to produce a steady amount of Pollack to the mid-teens mark and at time of writing the Cod catches seemed to have slowed down. Over the coming weeks the fishing should remain good with those anglers fishing light tackle having great sport in shallow water and it is not long before recreational anglers can land and retain a Bass.

Samalite League

Chesil Centre, May 21st, 6 - 11pm. This match started off with torrential rain for the walk to pegs, but as the night progressed the rain eased away and it was dry for the second half and the weigh in so not too bad. We were expecting Smoothounds as around 8 were recorded in last years match at this venue so we picked same tide and time of month which really payed off for a change. 43 Smoothounds were caught measured and released !!! This has to be the most ever caught in a match off Chesil also the average size was around 6 - 8lb and they put up a great fight especially in the surf with many ending up a couple of pegs down before they could land their fish. Other fish caught included, DOGFISH, POUT, POLLACK, POOR COD, GURNARD. ZONE A; 1st, Dave Lane, 24lb 1/8oz 2nd, Ben Bradstock, 21lb 4oz 3rd, Jason Brown, 15lb 13oz 4th, Ben Stockley, 13lb 10 1/8oz ZONE B ; 1st, Joe Arch, 43lb 2oz 2nd, Terry Hartnell, 32lb 6 3/4oz 3rd, Darren Stevens, 28lb 13 3/8oz 4th, Chris Read, 25lb 1oz Zone prizes, 1st £80, 2nd £50, 3rd £35, 4th £20. Whilst at the last mark it was the Club’s PresidentDerek Smith who really shone by boating a cracking Smoothound of 11lb 15oz which gave him a good workout, shortly followed by a cracking black bream of 3lb 3oz (a few ounces short of a specimen). However, this wasn’t quite enough to win the match which was eventually won by Arran Harmer with Jane Hopkins hot on his heels. A great start to the season. A good variety of species were caught throughout the day including: pollock, ballan wrasse, pout, dog fish, black bream, smoothound, tope and plaice.

Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. Les Trish (Crosby), 8 flounders, 1 eel, 251 pts. (Zone B). 2. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 7 flounders, 174 (Zone A). 3. Joe Perry (Litherland), 5 flounders, 233. 4. John Waugh (Wallasey), 6 flounders, 158. 5. David G. Hutchinson (Morecambe), 5 flounders, 168. 6. Mike Flynn (Llanfair p.g.), 6 flounders,122.

Class 1: The winner of heaviest bag of black bream caught by Debbie Elcott BRASS 36.1b 11oz

For once the weather was actually better than predicted making for comfortable fishing throughout the day and the sun even made a prolonged appearance! Due to a fairly large tide the plan was to fish various inshore marks around Christchurch ledge and regular moves were made during the day to maximise on the species available. In total 10 members fished and at the first stop it was Jane Hopkins who showed the men the way by boating several nice pollock to put her in pole position. Whilst at the next mark all members enjoyed steady action with good sized black bream coming aboard thick and fast, with nearly all returned to provide for years to come. At the next mark Nelson Phillips proved he was the top man for plaice by boating several plump fish around the 2lb mark in quick succession, paving the way for the rest of the boat.

Marking the half way point in the series, the match was fished in perfect conditions on the famous brick beach between Antony Gormley's 'Another Place' (the Iron Men) and the mouth of the River Alt. Flounders to 36 cms (560 gms) made up the bulk of the catches and Les Trish showed a lifetime's experience of fishing this, his local beach with a winning catch of eight flounders and an eel for a length to weight calculation total of 251 points from Zone B, near the Alt. (Three generations of the Trish family fished this match, the youngest being Stephen Trish junior, Les’s grandson.) England International, Bill Lindfield landed seven flounders, giving him the Zone A win and second place overall. Championship leader, Steve Bonner was eighth and maintains his lead but the gap is narrowing.

West Bay SAC 28th May 2016, Saturday Juniors, East Pier West Bay 12:00 - 15:00. Ten members and one guest signed on to fish the latest Saturday Junior match on a warm day with a misty start, the sun did put an appearance in later, there was no wind and the sea was flat calm. Though the competitors were hopeful of catching some mackerel, none showed. Fishing was very slow with only ten fish being weighed in. The winner of the match managed to catch his winning fish with just ten minutes to go to the end of the match, this pushed his brother into second place. Species caught: shanny, rockling & wrasse. 1st: Fin Davies 366g (353g Legal Weight).

NORTH DEVON REPORT

Dan Spearman thin lipped grey mullet 4lb 15oz

By Wayne Thomas

Shore anglers have enjoyed an upturn in sport with smoothound dominating reports. Dan Spearman, Chay Boggis and Kyle Bishop enjoyed a hectic session at a local rock mark landing an incredible fiftythree smoothounds between low water and high water. The fish were tempted on a mixture of frozen peeler crab and hardback crab. During another session Dan Spearman landed a personal best smoothound scaling 13lb 6oz and Fellow member Matt Jeffery also landed a smoothound of 10lb 6oz. Richard Budge won this years Putsborough Open competition organised by Combe Martin Sea Angling Club with a specimen smoothound scaling 10lb 5oz. Runner up in the event that attracted 38 competitors was David Brooke who landed a fine small-eyed ray weighing 10lb 1oz. Richard Budge secured the pool with his smoothound weighing 10lb 5oz and a smalleyed ray of 8lb 4oz that also secured third prize. Sakuma Tackle, Ammo Baits, Braunton Bait Box, Reed’s Chill-cheaters and Veal’s Mail Order sponsored the event with Combe Martin SAC providing additional £150 prize money. Competitors enjoyed ideal conditions and landed a good number of smalleyed ray and dogfish with a few smoothound. Combe Martin SAC member Rob Sciones spent an evening on a local rock mark to tempt a fine bass of 6lb 3oz using a single king ragworm fished on a jig head. Ross Stanway landing a fine bass of 7lb1oz. The fish was tempted on a small crab bait intended for wrasse. Rob Sciones also found ballan wrasse on the feed at a local rock mark landing eight fish in a session using king ragworm baits presented on a jig head. The best

of the session weighed 3lb 8oz. Kevin Legge fished a mark near Minehead to land a spotted ray of 4lb 11oz and was on hand to witness a fine small-eyed ray of 11lb 8oz to the rod of Ammo Baits director Ian Tyldesley. Bideford and District Angling Clubs monthly Rover was dominated by Taz Wotton who took first, second and third with smoothound scaling 10lb 3/4oz, 9lb 1 1/4oz and a dogfish of 2lb 51/4oz. Chelsea Babb dominated the junior section with smoothound of 6lb 51/4oz and 5lb 81/4oz Jazza John secured first and second in Appledore Shipbuilders monthly rover with a brace of smoothound weighing 8lb 1oz and 7lb 15oz. Chelsea Babb took the junior section with smoothound of 6lb 51/4oz and 5lb 81/4oz. Dan Spearman enjoyed a successful session targeting thin-lipped grey mullet at a local estuary landing a new personal best weighing 4lb 15oz. This is the biggest I have heard of so far this season fellow Combe Martin SAC member John Shapland also landed a brace weighing 3lb and 3lb 12oz. Thirteen year old Jack Pike enjoyed a day afloat on his father Kevin Pikes boat a 21ft Orkney Day Angler he landed a fine spurdog of 15lb 2oz and a tope of 21lb 14oz. Cameron Atkinson also shared the days sport landing a smoothound of 14lb 6oz while Andrew Atkinson boated a fighting fit smoothound of 15lb 1oz. Mackerel numbers have been very patchy so far this year though this can change dramatically at any time. Recent weeks have seen water clarity reduced as a result of the annual may bloom.

Sea Angling News, July 2016

ALDERNEY REPORT

extended the competition from 24 hours to 33. Initially starting out as a Species Hunt the vast prize table now ensures that it is a mix of a Species Hunt and Specimen Hunt. This year it will be fished over the weekend of the 3rd/4th September. Read on but all details are on the poster below plus reports attached here too from previous years.

By Mark Harding Boat sport is slowly improving, at the time of writing there are better stocks of bait in the way of Sandeel and Launce that have arrived on the banks to fatten up those Turbot up. Also we have seen plenty of small Herring which no doubt the fish have been feeding on. Mackerel are still thin on the ground, its ben a poor couple of years for these so its hard to guess how this is going to go over the next few weeks as to where we will be stock wise but certainly there has been an improvement. So the Turbot and Brill are there in fair numbers, by no means the best year but certainly no disaster. The average size of fish seems to be up and we have had our first 20lb+ fish reported to an angler on Arthur Savages Private Venture, a cracker of 21lb and also the same angler (sorry deleted email with name on!) caught a Brill that rocked the CI boat caught record and weighed a cracking 12lb 8oz. Every week we are getting fish in the teens being reported for Turbot and lots of nice Brill in the 6-9lb region. Bass are starting to show but lots of small fish, never seen small Bass in Alderney in numbers so is this the recovery from the ban on trawling implemented last year? Speculation probably but let’s hope it is and the stocks get to recover because certainly down in this neck of the woods we’ve never seen it so poor for this species. Boats venturing down to Sark on the reefs finding some good sport with Black Bream and Huss, early doors for this but great to see. Shore fishing is pretty quiet it has to be said. Plenty of Ballan Wrasse to 4lb on the soft plastics but very little else. We have the variety but not the quality just yet. Seeing sandeels in the water now so that’s a good sign, you would think everything else will follow. Bass wise it’s the same as the boat, seeing a fair smattering of small fish with fish hitting the surface lures and the smaller Savage Gear Sandeels being best. Nothing big with the best at 2lb 8oz to 3lb – with the exception to a whopping 8lb 7oz fish caught by local lad John Copeland. He has literally walked through the door as I am writing the report and been out since 2.30am this morning on Fathers Day! Caught on a hard plastic in one of our bays, awesome stuff. On the worm baits on the bottom we have had a few Sole reported, bit of a rarity for this time of year and very welcome. That kind of highlights that we are getting the variety but as I said quantities its not – it’ll change! Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Top 3 Heaviest Fish! A new match for 2016 with which the format has gone down really well. One twist to the heading though and that is all 3 weighed in fish need to be different species. Given how poor the fishing is currently the size limits issued were negligible to try and provide a full weigh in and all species counted except for mini ones plus Wrasse and Tope. There were still plenty to go for but alas despite excellent weather from the 14 anglers only Adam Salmon achieved the 3 in the 8 allotted hours with a Dogfish, Black Bream and a Pollack. He never had the heaviest weight though, that went Scott but the format as it stands made Adam the winner. It’s a thinking on your toes match when it is this tight. Heaviest fish went to our favourite postman and Quay FM addict JC with a 2lb 7oz Pollack. Match Results: 1. Adam Salmon – 3 species 3lb 15oz

COACHING & GUIDING REPORT By Craig Butler

Expectation can be high with lots of anglers, especially junior anglers and it's always a challenge to try and get things in perspective for them. So when brothers Henry & Dylan 9 & 10 years old asked me a few weeks ago for a smoothound fishing lesson you can imagine the challenge I faced with there high expectations. A spot where the hounds feed close enough in, so the boys can cast to them was needed just for starters. The boys had gone out the day before and got some crabs out of the rock pools as they know hounds love crabs. The traps were set with the boys using a 2-4oz 10ft set ups with a pulley rig and a single hardback crab cast out 25m. It wasn't long before Henry was was hanging on for dear life as a sporting 6lb 4oz hound gave him the run around. Not long after, I had another one about 70m out. Poor Dylan was feeling down on his luck, but with a bit of encouragement he was back on his feet just in time to grab his rod as the biggest one of the day at 9lb10oz tried to claim his rod to the sea. After a mixed emotional 3 hours our tally was 5 hounds between 6 and 9lb 10oz. For me, to see these two boys catch and play these fish with minimal help was amazing and goes to show these sporting fish are accessible to everyone . And on hard back crabs!!!! (Well done Henry & Dylan for both catching a PB smoothound your biggest fish from the shore to date this is a huge achievement.

The boys traps are set. Now patience and a bit of luck is all they need.

The boys fish handling and care was magnificent.

A few breaks in the weather have allowed some boats to get out and the fishing has been very busy. Mainly thornbacks, dogs and conger but the odd bass and the first of the smoothounds have put in a welcome appearance. Hound numbers should increase and with a bit of luck they will hang around the bay into August. Thornback numbers are very impressive with 30 fish between 2 anglers a realistic target. On Friday 22nd of April we held our presentation evening at Burnham motor boat and sailing club followed by a good indian takeaway and a couple of beers. With the weather so poor last year a few competitions didn't get fished. Results below. Burnham Competitions Fred Peters Trophy - Craig Willis thornback of 10lb 5oz Wilf Dunstone Celebration Bowl – James Devey cod 4lb 3oz Presedents Cup – Andy Georgiou cod 12lb 5.5oz Tony Holly Trophy – Anthony Georgiou bull huss 10lb 11oz Cod Cup – Andy Georgiou 15lb 2oz Bass Cup – Mark Bowden 5lb 11oz Best Flatfish Trophy – Nigel Devey dab 7.5oz Whitbread Skate Trophy – Andy Georgiou thornback 12lb 2oz Whiting Trophy – Mark Bowden 1lb 3.5oz Overall Specimen – Andy Georgiou cod 15lb 12oz Labbe Challenge Cup – Mark Bowden 7 species Away Day Competitions – Weymouth Bristol Boys Trophy – Martin Quinn undulate ray 11lb 6oz Big Meadow Flatfish Trophy – Martin Quinn turbot 4lb 2oz The 3 most prestigious trophy’s are the Mustard Trophy, awarded to the angler which attains the most points throughout the year from both comps and specimen hunting and won by Andy Georgiou with 25 points. The Porthcawl Insurance Trophy which is awarded to the boat which attains the most points throughout the year and was won by Ultrawhite. The final trophy is the “Boob of the Year” which was won by Martin Quinn. After catching a nice double figure cod Martin was so excited that in his haste to bait up and get back out there when he cast he forgot to hold onto his new rod and reel and threw it overboard!!

Fish of the month for May was won by Richard Saxby with a thornback of 10lb 12oz On the 19th June we fished our Thornback trophy with 12 anglers on 5 boats catching in excess of 100 rays. Unfortunately none were over the 10 lb minimum size so first place went to Andy Georgiou with a hound of 11lb 4oz, 2nd was John Quinn with a hound of 10lb 1oz and he also took 3rd with a doggie of 2lb 3oz. All hounds were measured and released. One comp in July from Burnham on Sunday 17th, a catch measure and release smoothhound comp. We also have our summer bbq at the sailing club so plenty to look forward to. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 21st July at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. Sea Angling News, July 2016

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by Dave Roberts

Here in the Bristol Channel summer has landed with a vengeance! The water has cleared beautifully after the last set of neap tides. With this clearing of the waters the mackerel have arrived in large numbers. Following these amazing bait fish are good numbers of tope, huss and conger. Birds such as gannets, shearwaters, petrels and black headed gulls have also arrived to join in the spectacular. Inshore grounds producing gurnards, scads, bream and pollack whilst the sport anglers are still knocking out some superb Smoothounds. Hounds to twenty pounds are commonplace on many inshore

marks. Hardback crab is as good as anything to nail these fantastic sport fish. Squid will also take its share which in my opinion, leaves the grossly overpriced peelers better off left under the rock they came from! Rays still showing well with many small eyeds and blondes reaching specimen size. With luck, this feeding frenzy will stay with us in the Bristol Channel for the foreseeable future producing some of the finest sport available. If you fancy a trip give us a ring, I'm sure we will be able to accommodate you!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle It was only a matter of time before the bigger smoothhounds made an appearance on the shore. From Minehead to Weston and they have not disappointed. The numbers in the channel this year are exceptional, with some seriously good bags recorded. One such session this past month that’s stands out was by Barnstaple duo Dan Spearman and Kyle Bishop who bagged an incredible 53 hounds and dropped a good number on the retrieve in a hectic few hounds from a north Devon mark. Nothing massive with fish to 9lb, but fantastic epic sport non the less. Back to the bigger much sort after specimen hounds. A few anglers have hit things just right when tides and conditions have been right and bagged some crackers with fish of 15-17lb being recorded from the Somerest reef systems and beyond. To date the biggest reported are one of 17lb10oz caught by Steve Ace from Veals of Bristol from an upper channel mark.

This fish being backed up with crackers of 16lb2oz caught by Steve Liddle of West Coast Angling Centre and one of 17lb 2oz caught by Harry Brake from V.M.O and another of 17lb2oz for casting legend Andy Copping and many more. From other reports there have been lots of other 11-15lb hounds to make up catches from these low water reef marks. No doubt these fish will be superseded this coming month with fish possibly into the 20s. Ray catches have remain good with good numbers of Thornbacks from Blue Anchor right the way to the upper channel marks at Clevedon, and even above there. Bass reports have been a bit taboo this month with anglers not really making any noise when one is caught. But there are no shortages of bass that’s for sure. You just need to target them. I have tried to keep it short this month to accommodate more pictures as they say it all. Tightlines and happy hunting…

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This month started off a whole lot better than last, with the major engine problem behind us we had it all to look forward to. Our first trip was to Alderney in not so good weather and all performed well. The fishing was not as good as this time last year, but the quality of fish was exceptional, with the best Turbot weighing in at 21lb and a stonking Brill of 12.5lb. We managed to find enough Launce but Mackerel totalled just nine over the five days (where have they all gone)

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs Still some nice Bream showing on the ledges, with several fish around the 3-8oz – 4lb mark. Squid strip presented on a 2 hook paternoster or a 1 up 1 down rig taking most of the fish. Smoothounds are in abundance on the Solent banks and Western approaches. Some great sport can be had on light tackle. It's best to target them this month before the weed gets too heavy. It seems like another season with very few mackerel

about. We did manage a dozen whilst fishing over a mid channel wreck. This time of year we should be pulling them in by the string full. For those who don't mind travelling the distance, the mid channel wrecks are now fishing well for Pollack and Cod . Slough S.A.C, Catch and Release Bass trip, saw some 25 Bass and 1 Wrasse caught on a wide range of artificial lures.

The good thing is that Mark from Alderney Angling had for seen the problem and shipped in frozen mackerel to purchase from his tackle shop (Problem solved) West Wight inshore marks are still producing some good size Bream and Pollock (but still no Mackerel) which is a worry as this will be the third year in a row.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, July 2016

Port Report June has been cold, windy and wet. And, as an added bonus, the month has been blessed with days of thick fog, especially around the Channel Islands. But there have been a few days when the layers of clothing have been somewhat reduced and we have been able to turn our reel handles more easily. From what I read, this has been the coldest June since 1642 which explains why we poor skippers sleeping on our unheated boats in Alderney Harbour have kept our oilskins, boots and fluffy hats on in order that we might be able to move in the morning when our well fed and centrally heated customers arrive for their day’s Channel Island angling. But…back to Weymouth. The Shambles Bank has been excellent in terms of numbers of flatfish caught. Most of the turbot have been undersized and returned but there have been a few in the 5lb to 10lb range along with some sizeable brill. Anglers arte kept busy with boat catches of up to 30 flatties along with blonde and undulate rays plus some exciting spurdog tussles to keep the rods unusually busy. Spurdogs were abundant in Weymouth Bay in the late 80’s and then did a splendid disappearing act with just the occasional fish now and then showing up. But this June (and May) has been amazing for action packed spurdog fishing with plenty of fish well into double figures. Like so many species these days, the vast majority of the spurdogs are returned after a photo session. The spurdog marks are also producing a few small tope, rays and conger….so good sport fishing for those that enjoy this sort of action. Rays, spotted, undulates and blondes have come from all of the banks in the Weymouth and Portland area during both anchoring and drifting (for turbot) sessions. These various banks are also providing the usual run of dogfish, gurnard and pouts but cod, pollack and strap conger are also likely. We have no plaice this year in the West Shambles Bouy area. Today divers surveyed the area where just two years ago the mussel beds were thick and now they have all gone with no sign of new growth. We do not know why this has happened. Pollution from various landfill/ land reclamation works to the east are being blamed for the disappearance of the pea mussels that made this particular area so productive for plaice, bream and many other species. Attempts to find out the reasons are underway but it will no doubt be very difficult to get any answers that are believable. Bass are everywhere. There is always a ‘dominant’ species each year. This year, so far, it is bass. We are all now very aware of how stupidly unfair the restrictions on the recreational sector are and the effects are being felt with more bookings for bass trips being cancelled. Reports from various other ports are indicating the same situation. This has been an economically damaging decision by DEFRA and the Fisheries Minister which is affecting a range of businesses connected with the charter boat industry in particular. This has to be rectified but it is proving very difficult to get any dialogue going with the decision makers. Offshore the wrecking has been very different this year. Last year we were spoilt. It was dead easy to catch cod. This year it is not. The fish are bigger and we skippers watch in dismay as anglers are ‘snapped off’ through misuse or non-use of the clutch systems on reels. It never ceases to amaze that so many anglers do not know what a star or lever drag is and how to use it. The enlightened amongst you will mock in disbelief but it is a common error amongst so many in not setting their drag systems correctly. The cod are feeding at completely unpredictable times. One day they will feed only when the tide is easing with the end of the flood tide being more productive. The next day they will be shoaled up right on top of the wreck and feed only at dead slack and then another day it will be feeding time only when the drift hits speeds in excess of three knots. This is a challenge just as it is working out the best lure, the best length of trace and most successful retrieve speed. Anglers are being

challenged this year and it is those who can find the answer to the daily riddle who will catch the fish. It is no good glaring at your skipper as if he doesn’t know what he is doing…this is up to you the angler to use your skills and talents to catch this year’s cod which are the survivors of last year’s silly season. And, as survivors, they are more unpredictable and elusive as well as heavier and definitely more powerful.

L to R. John Gumbleton, Club Chairman Alan Norris and Steve Gumbleton. All from Shepton Mallet near Bath, Somerset. Members of the Bath based Gannet SAC treated Club Chairman Alan Norris for a day out after Alan's three year battle with serious illness. This is what sea angling is all about, friendship and fellowship...and a few nice cod, of course.

have been a lot of very good sized pollack about in May. Here is Richard Heaseman from Devizes with a fine double figure specimen.

The Channel Island trips are also hard work for the flatfish. They are there and perseverance is the key. But there are also different ways to subtly tweak the terminal tackle which can make all the difference. This year there has been a lot of ‘lift’ in the water. If you have ever tried scuba diving then you will have felt the effects of this ‘lift’ even when down on the bottom. Using a camera last week set just above the running leger rigs, the traces could be seen to be lifting up to 45 degrees from the bottom so instead of the baits running nicely along the bottom they were in fact a good three feet above the turbot. It is important to consider the various factors that may be affecting the bait presentation. After all, fishing is all about the bait. It has to look good and be attractive and it has to be presented at the optimum level for the fish to find. It may be that we are missing the flatties because we are simply not putting the bait in front of them as has to be done with turbot. Consider experimenting with a small spiral weight close to the hook to weigh the trace down…it could make all the difference.

At last the mackerel have shown up. This has made a marked difference to the inshore anchoring sessions. To date we have not been able to offer the popular tope fishing sessions around Alderney as we cannot catch enough (or any!) bait. May used to be the prime month for tope but that was when we could get mackerel from late April onwards. Now we are just starting to get the mackerel in mid-June and reports from many anglers indicate that mackerel are very scarce and seem to getting harder to find and arriving later each year. We are now getting the mackerel on the west side of Portland, usually on the flood tide, so anchoring sessions are definitely going to be better for everyone with increased reports of conger for example over the mid June three day visit by the 25 strong Belgium contingent that visited Weymouth.

Typical May cod....caught by plumber Darren Bunce from Oxford.

Walrus Tant with his 4lb 5oz Brill - Sally Ann Jo

What will happen in July? Well, you will be allowed to keep a bass each! This means that we will be able to offer a short period of bassing during your day and this will certainly help in the longer Channel Island trips which have always provided a few bass as the main attraction for going there for your angling holiday. The cod should remain for most of July and, if we are lucky, will continue into the early part of August. The bream will show signs of moving into the Portland area marks. The turbot and, hopefully, an increasing amount of brill will continue to give the Shambles Bank anglers the chance of these highly prized species. The rough ground marks south of The Shambles and West of Portland will be increasingly active with conger, huss, rays, tope and the occasional surprise such as a decent cod or pollack caught on the legered mackerel baits.

Guntis Strautmanis with his 11lb 12oz turbot - Sally Ann Jo

Pior Mucha with his 12lb 8oz Undulate Ray - Sally Ann Jo

Vitaliy Bals with his Undulate Ray which was also 11lb 12oz - Sally Ann Jo

The Channel Island trips from Weymouth will continue on a weekly basis with a number of the Weymouth charter boats now involved in this popular option. Apart from the sand banks around the Islands there is also the chance to fish the Hurd Deep wrecks and reefs which can produce some outstanding fishing, particularly for pollack. And, as a complete contrast to fishing the deepest part of the English Channel, the inshore rock marks provide the opportunity to fish for pollack on very light tackle and 2oz leads…great fun with the added bonus that the pollack can be returned. So, lots to look forward to next month and lots of challenges for anglers. As ever, thank you all for coming to Weymouth to enjoy the fishing here with us. Let’s hope for a great month of sport and friendship together.

Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick

The past month has been a struggle for some anglers and brilliant for others along chesil. The mackerel shoals are still very patchy althugh you still stand a good chance of a healthy bag at first light. The best news this month is the sheer number amonth, The best venues to target the bigger numbers and better fish are the deeper water marks from abbotsbury to ferrybridge. Ferrybridge has also been producing the first of the better black bream it should not be to long before the numbers start to grow as july in the past has been a very productive month for me on the bream. A health sized rag bait on a size 2 hook with a couple of 5mm yellow and green beads usually does the trick. Its not all about the rigs and bait though a lot of a productive day is about being on the venues when the fish are feeding. When ever i plan a black bream trip down chesil i like to have a slightly bigger than middle tide with high water around 8am and be set up on the beach for first light. Just by doing this your chances of catching 2-4lb bream all morning is not a dream but very possible. Like alot of species down chesil beach the further you can cast the better as big distance does tend to find more of the better fish. Some big undulates have still been showing at the eastern end of chesil but if you wouldlike numbers of rsy and are not to worried about size get some sandeel and have a go at burton bradstock as at night it has been producing some very good smalleyed ray fishing with the average fish weighing from 3-6lb and can be really good sport. There has been some good stories this month of some very big fish being played and then lost from ferrybridge to bridging camp. we all here them now and again, two of my very good friends and keen anglers john lewis and gareth mayers had a session between ferrybridge and the camp they were not

targeting any particular species just a general days fishing . Around midday i recieved a phone call from a very excited gareth telling me that john was into something very good and he had been playing it for a while about mins later he phoned me back again saying john lost the fish but then added the fish what ever it was removed all the line off johns reel except the last 10yards as when john seen the bottom of the spool he put the breaks on and the fish snapped him up. They also caught this on video to back up there story which was quite an impressive watch and definatly a story for the grand kids.During the video it looks like it could have been a very large ray as it takes line fairly consistantly and not to fast but saying that the tope do usually start to show down there at this time of year it did look a bit slow to have been a tope or any other shark but then agagin we will never know? I have not heard of any big tope yet but they cant be far behind, Wayne Hand had a tidy trip with some nice gurnard, smooth hound up to 11lb 4oz and the first report of a tope of 3lb not massize but good to see them start to show just have to wait for the mums and dads to turn up now. The plaice fishing at westbexington and cogden has been fairly quiet there has been plaice showning just not many big fish and the numbers are not as good as recent years also. Over the next month along chesil we should see more and more summer species numbers and sizes should grow, black bream, red mullet, all types of gurnard, venues with a feature such as the adelaid at ferry bridge should start producing some triggers along with the wrasse, pollack and bream. At night the smooth hound will be most angler main target with peeler being the best bait, a nice calm night at high water could produce some big conger on a big fish bait, for the ray sandeel is the best bait and you stand a chance of any of the species along the entire beach, undulates , thornies, spotted, blonde and small eyed ray. Over the next month I hope you all enjoy some brilliant summer fishing! Happy hunting all !!

Sea Angling News, July 2016

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO This months LRF adventures have been largely unfruitful for me with the highlight being a quick few hours squeezed in before helping out at the Swanage fish festival. This time I was fishing with England international and current world top 5 international angler Callum Graham. From the walk to the pier it was obvious fishing would be hard due to a very distinct green tinge to the usually crystal clear LRF heaven of Swanage bay. Callum started with a tiny dexter style wedge on his original prototype HTO Rockfish UL while I went with with a 3gram HTO jig head with half a Medium pink isome on the hook. Callum was immediately getting taps on his wedge while my rod tip remained motionless straight down the legs of the pier. Interested to see if I could tempt the mid water culprit of the Callums rattles I pelted the jighead as far as it could fly and stared a constant but slow retrieve as soon as it reached the water to keep it in the upper layers. This tactic was quickly forgotten as Callum puled a smelt up onto the peir, just as I remember my lure was still fishing the rod lifted with a sharp heavy bang. Through the dark green depths a “Bass Flash caught my eye unfortunately I did try to tempt it back but to no avail. That was the only chance of a fish over 5 oz for the session but a steady stream of sand smelt did follow for both me and Callum. Once I had beaten the blank and nailed a few on the pink isome I decide to stick catching the smelt just to keep my rod tip twitching. Admittedly smelt are'nt the most exiting fish however they are usually milling in the upper layers in conditions are favourable for a blank, they are also great for testing out tactics to target other mid water species like garfish, mackerel, scad, bream and mullet so I thought I would make the best of the situation and see how many different rigs/tactics I could catch on in my the hour or two left in the session try a number of these included extra long dropshot rigs, HTO shore jigs, meps style spinners, HTO fugitive, Texas rig and a pieces of white isome fished on a 1ft hooklength in front of a HTO slow sinking bombarda. All of these tactics worked with may favourite being the bombardas which to date has accounted for some fantastic sport with bream, mackerel, smelt and mullet for me.
