www.snowbee.co.uk BASS MEASURES FAILING TO PROTECT SPAWNING STOCKS IN THE SOUTH AND EAST OF ENGLAND Changes made last year by Fisheries Minister George Eustice to water-down EU proposals to protect threatened stocks of sea bass have come under fire from angling organisations following the publication of upsetting pictures of captured fish. They show bass secreting milt that were landed by fishing boats in the North Thames Estuary - six weeks after the premature end of the (Feb/March) commercial harvesting moratorium. Similar scenes have been witnessed in Dorset leading anglers and conservationists to question why commercial gill netters and hook-and-line vessels were given a four month exemption from the original EU proposal for a full six month no-take ban for the first half of the year, which still applies to recreational fishing. The male fish pictured was landed by an angler on the 8th May 2016 on a mark East of Bradwell. It weighed around 3lb after excreting milt onto the deck. A second fish of the same size was landed within minutes of the first and also excreted milt. Both were immediately and successfully returned alive however evidence from commercial catches shows that many large spawning fish, fat with eggs, are being sold at the present time.

West Country anglers have been enjoying some cracking smoothound action this week. Clem Thomas (top) with a 25lb 4oz hound caught a private boat off Watchet & Shaun Brewer (bottom) with a 22lb 8oz hound caught on a Newquay (Cornwall) based charter boat. Both fish were taken on crab baits.

During April and May, bass found in the Southern North Sea shoal up in large numbers off the Suffolk and Essex coast to spawn and have again been heavily exploited by commercial fishermen this year. Angling Trust Campaigns Chief Martin Salter said: "It is appalling that at a time when bass stocks are at critical levels the derogation negotiated by George Eustice for inshore commercial vessels has allowed the deliberate targeting of spawning aggregations of a threatened species. "This breaks every rule of good fishery management practice and is a conservation outrage. We are calling for a root and branch reform of the rules governing bass fishing not only to make them fairer for anglers but to enable valuable stocks to have a chance to spawn and for the fry to move into our rivers and estuaries to develop and grow." Mick Sharp, a former member of the Kent and Essex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, said: "During my four year term serving on the Kent and Essex IFCA, I was bombarded by recreational sea anglers and charter skippers desperate to get something done about the slaughter of bass spawning aggregations inside the six mile limit off the Essex and Suffolk coasts. "You have only got to look at the landing data to see that the peak in bass landings by commercial netters based in Essex occurs during April and May. Many of these fish are the big spawning females, up to 6kg, that we need to preserve in order to replenish future stocks." Nigel Horsman, from the Bass Anglers' Sportfishing Society (BASS), said: "The politically motivated derogation on landing bass by commercial fishermen in February and March was never about fully protecting Continued on page 2...

BASS MEASURES FAILING TO PROTECT SPAWNING STOCKS IN THE SOUTH AND EAST OF ENGLAND Continued from page 1... bass whilst they were spawning, but more about appearing to do something by imposing a meaningless moratorium in the two months when commercial fishing for bass is at its lowest.

COMPETITION MINEHEAD HARBOUR Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd July 2016

"Eye witnesses now confirm that from Dorset to Essex bass are spawning in April and May, as they always have done, exposing the lie behind this derogation. It's high time politicians and fishery managers did the right thing and told the whole truth about their decisions, or better still, took the right decisions in the first place."

David Curtis, from the campaigning group Save Our Seabass, added: "Had George Eustice and his French counterpart respected the EU Commission’s proposal for a full six month moratorium, these spawning bass, that are so vital to saving the stock, would now be fully protected.

Cost £150 per angler including boat fees, entry fees and presentation meal/buffet. 2 hook match, permitted baits mackerel, squid and ragworm (not maddies or whites)

"Instead we are forced to watch spawning bass being slaughtered in gill nets that we are told are 'sustainable' and 'low impact'. This madness needs to end - if a moratorium is required to rebuild stocks then it should apply to everyone, without exception.” The Bass Anglers' Sportfishing Society (BASS) has written to Defra to alert them to the situation and to press for an overhaul of the bass regulations.

We had just such a trip on our boat Sophie Lea with anglers that had had two trips with us in the past catching big hauls of Ray's and wanted something different so we sailed to different grounds catching lots of dabs tubs and bass together with lots of medium hounds so it's worth asking your skipper if you don't ask you won't get.

RECREATIONAL SEA ANGLERS FROM ESSEX & SUFFOLK TOGETHER WITH ESSEX WILDLIFE TRUST ASSIST SCIENTISTS ON BASS RESEARCH Between March and October, large shoals of Bass visit the inshore waters and estuaries of the Essex & Suffolk Coast. The species have declined markedly in recent years, through a combination of high levels of fishing and consecutive years of poor survival of juvenile fish, thought to be due to low winter water temperatures. As a response, the EU introduced emergency protection measures in 2015, These have been extended into 2016. The measures have been challenged both nationally and regionally by anglers, fishermen and marine conservation groups. Knowledge gaps in the understanding of Bass biology and behaviour - where they migrate to, when they breed and how their behaviours are influenced by the environment - prompted the government to fund a four year research project called C-Bass. This project is helping marine scientists from Cefas (The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) to gradually close that knowledge gap.

With limited funding for regional tagging work in Cefas, Essex Wildlife Trust stepped in by purchasing eight hundred T-Bar tags and equipment to support the three volunteer angling charter skippers boat and the two private angling boat skippers. The volunteers fish from Suffolk, mid Essex and south Essex giving a good spread of the coast. It is anticipated that this support from the volunteers and the Essex Wildlife Trust members will provide an important boost to our knowledge of Bass movements off East Anglia. Essex Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Essex University and the Institute of Fisheries Management conduct small fish surveys on key habitats like salt marsh, rivers and creeks collecting valuable information on juvenile Bass behaviour. The Trust aims to ensure that these valuable habitats are protected.

Sarah Alison, Living Seas Co-ordinator from Essex Wildlife Trust and Mick Sharp, an independent On the 10th May 2016, Essex Wildlife Trust invited recreational sea angler from Southend on Sea, said: Cefas to present the latest results of their work at “By combining resources with scientists, academics The Naze Centre, their new visitor centre at Walton and practitioners, we can collectively improve the on the Naze, which opens to the public soon. At just a tad under 9lb this is a pretty impressive brill especially as the specimen size for this species, caught in Area S (Channel Islands), is 4lb. The captor, Rodney Fry from Boscombe, Dorset, is on a five day Channel Island trip and, like the rest of the 8 man team, has had to contend with some grim sea conditions this week but this outstanding fish goes some way to making it all worthwhile. ANGLING TRUST AND FISHINGINFO LAUNCH VIDEO BATTLE TO SHOWCASE JOYS OF ANGLING AND WIN PRIZES! The Angling Trust has launched an exciting new social media competition to encourage anglers to get back on the banks and inspire newcomers to take up the sport. The Angling Trust Video Battle (ATVB) – run in conjunction with Fishinginfo.co.uk – is calling for anglers to get creative by shooting and editing their own short fishing video to compete with other battlers to win fabulous tackle prizes worth hundreds of pounds.

Victoria Bendall from Cefas Explaining how to operate the T Bar tag applicator

All that competitors have to do is shoot a video about anything related to angling. It can be funny, artistic, educational, theatrical, the nature of fishing, a prize catch, a favourite venue, a chat about fishing with a bunch of mates … anything! Videos should be no longer than three minutes long and there will be two categories for entrants – 16 years and under, and 17 years and over. Completed videos must be received no later than Sunday, July 31st. Entries will be showcased on the Fishinginfo YouTube channel from Tuesday, August 16th – and then the battle is on!

Volunteer anglers and observers watching how an electronic tag is attached

Volunteer angler attaching a T-Bar Tag

Each battler can then share and publicise their video on their own social media accounts and platforms and the four most-viewed videos by Sunday, September 18th will compete in the Video Battle final along

with one lucky wildcard battler chosen by Angling Trust Ambassadors Carl & Alex. The winning videos will be chosen by a judging panel in early October. Commenting on the challenges in encouraging younger participants to angling, fish artist and project manager Adam O Connor (aka Dusto) said: "The power of social media can often be a hindrance in getting kids involved in sports and angling has seen a decline in younger participants in recent years. “With Video Battle we aim to claim back some ground and inspire newcomers to the sport by using what we have in abundance – talented and creative people with a passion for fishing. “These traits are sure to shine through during this exciting competition. With many great prizes up for grabs in the Angling Trust Video Battle who wouldn’t want to have a go!" Throughout the competition, Dusto and fellow host Ant Glascoe Jr will be getting out and about meeting some of the battlers and getting the low-down on their video entries. PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 5

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

If I had to choose just one species of fish to go for from the shore then it would have to be the gilthead bream. There is something magical about fishing a quiet secluded estuary mark only for the peace to be shattered by a gilt taking off and dragging your rod and reel down the beach as it goes! Luckily for me and fellow gilt addicts they are now starting to show in the various estuaries around Plymouth including the Yealm, Tamar and Kingsbridge although so far its’ been a case of feast or famine. Matt Parry of Castaway SAC and South West Sea Baits has certainly set the bar in the 2 month long Gilthead Competition he is running by weighing in a cracking PB of 5-3. Ben Ashley Jones also registered a PB of 3-7. By the time of the July report I fully expect to hear about larger specimens coming from the Cornish tidal creeks including the Fal and Helford. Best baits for these hard-fighting fish are lug and crab. Something I am often asked is what hook pattern and size to use for gilts. This is simple as I believe the best (and only) hook I ever use for gilts are the ESP Raptor Big T’s (Teflon coated) in size 1. Ultra sharp and very strong – forget those weak fine wire hooks!

Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 has reported that the rough ground reef fishing on the reefs has now picked up with the arrival of the launce, with good numbers of double figure Pollack coming over the rails whilst the wrecks are now starting to produce some large Cod and Ling. A recent inshore boat session with members from Seafarers SAC also resulted in the capture of 8 small eyed rays to 7-8 along with spotted rays to 5lb between the 2 anglers on board. Fishing on his own boat local angler Richard Ing recorded a cracking spotted ray of 7-8 which was returned after weighing. That’s for this month – enjoy the summer weather and happy dipping.

Stewart Gray SE Ray 11lb-2oz

Matt Parry Gilthead of 5lb-3oz

The plaice bonanza along the beaches of Slapton and Beesands continues although numbers have reduced slightly which hasn’t been helped by the annual invasion of spider crabs. I have also heard that those anglers fishing on into darkness have been finding some smoothhounds up to around 7lb on crab baits. Those fishing rock marks continue to find some nice sized huss with Mark Ancill of Rodbenders getting a nice huss of exactly 10lb and whilst fellow member Danny Clegg managed one of 10-1. With a combination of some SW winds and the start of the Plymouth and District Shore League this coming weekend I fully expect to be reporting on the first real heavyweight huss in next month’s report. Castaways SAC member Stewart ‘The Doctor’ Gray made the long trip up to the Bristol Channel shore line and was rewarded with several small eyed ray with the best fish being a cracker of 11-2 which was released after weighing. I did hear that Stewart put his success down to Steve Arnold doing a sterling job in intercepting the doggies before they got to Stewart’s baits – what a nice chap!

We Had a Pier Comp on Swanage Pier Saturday night 16/04/16. The weather was clear and dry if a little chilly with the wind coming straight into the pier. A good number of members fished around the pier on the different levels. Fishing was a little slow at times but the attention of small wrasse kept it interesting although they were hard to hook. A good number of fish came in on the float and fishing on the bottom productive if the crabs could be avoided. Everyone caught on the night which was good. Paul Driver won on the night with a catch made up of Wrasse, Pollock, Pout and a 3 Bearded Rockling 8.5oz for 154cm. Dave Draper Second with 143cm, with a catch that included an unusual Dragonet and a nice Ballen Wrasse of 2lb 2oz. Third Phil Thomas with 100cm. Nick Clements also had a nice 3 Bearded Rockling 8.5oz. Other species caught on the night included Dogfish and a small Conger. Well done to Sophie Driver who won the Junior section with 110cm beating her brother Curtis Driver into Second place with 19cm. Sophie's catch included a nice Lesser Spotted Dogfish of 60cm and a small Conger Eel. We had the First Evening Boat Trip of the Year on Monday 18/04/16 with Phil Higgins on Mistress Linda. We fished on the boat with six club Members and two guests. The weather was kind with a slight breeze making it a little choppy. We started out trying for Bream on a rough ground mark which proved productive with 22 coming to the boat and a number of good sized specimens, together with quite a few Pouting, half a dozen Dogfish, a few wrasse and the odd Mackerel. For the last hour we moved to a bank to try for a Ray and Three came to the boat, Dave Hoare had a nice Undulate Ray of 8lb 8oz and Junior Curtis Driver had a slightly larger Undulate Ray of 10lb 2oz, which put up a good fight on light gear. Every one caught and enjoyed the company and hospitality of the Skipper Phil Higgins who kept every one supplied with hot drinks. Good night had by all. Well done to Phil Thomas who won the senior section with 31 fish points and Curtis Driver who won the Junior section with 20 fish points. We had a club away shore comp on Saturday night 23/04/16 at Steamer Point. What promised to be a good venue produced very little. Members fished a good portion of the beach but it only produced a few small whiting and pouting. The cold north wind may have something to do with it but at least it didn't rain. Phil Thomas won on the night with 50cm, Dave Potts Second 42cm and Nigel Back Third with 28cm. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 64cm.

4 Club Members 6 Guests and 1 Club Junior on charter Boat Rocket skippered by Andy Adams . The wind was a lot more than forecast and kept the Boat moving around in the Tide. The initial spot proved slow and disappointing when we trying for a few Bream, Only two Bream were caught on the night with a number of pout, Wrasse and Dogfish. We moved to a bank to try for a Ray in the second half of the comp and a couple were caught along with more Dogfish, Pout and a Smoothound. Junior Curtis Driver caught a nice Undulate Ray of 11 lb his second sizeable Ray in as many trips. Curtis Won the Junior section with 13 fish points. Well done to Martyn Whittaker who won the Seniors on the night with 9 fish points. We had a Away Shore Comp on Wednesday night 4/5/16 at Solent Meads. A good number of members spread out and fished along various sections of the beach with mixed fortunes. It was a cold night with a chilly breeze blowing from the South East but at least it wasn't raining. The Easterly wind and the cold could of been the reason for the patchy fishing. Well done to Dave Draper who won on the night with 136cm made up of 3 small plaice a rockling and a Smooth hound. Second was Brian Read with 98cm and Third was Richard Cailes with 90cm. The rest of the nights species caught were Sole, Bass, Whiting, and a Dab. Well done to everyone who turned out on a cold Wednesday night, the fishing could of been better. The number of pleasure anglers fishing along Southborne and Solent Meads was surprising for midweek which suggests the fishing has been good along here, if it wasn't for that Easterly blowing. We had a Evening Boat Comp on Monday Night 9th May 2016 with Andy Adams skipper. We fished with four members two guests and one junior member. The Evening started off with light rain and drizzle, which came and went for the first couple of hours. Venturing out to the Poole patch in very little wind and flat calm conditions. We anchored up on slack water with the boat turning as the tide picked up. The fishing was very slow over slack water and the tide seemed to take an age to pick up. The light started to fade and the bites increased. Paul Driver Won on the night with 20 Fish points made up of lots of pouting a couple of Wrasse and a small Conger around 3 lb. Phil Thomas was second with 16 fish points and Chris Mackenzie Third with 15 fish points. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 16 fish points. The target species on the night was Bream and a number of Bream were caught some over two pounds, A few Wrasse, a couple of strap conger, a Mackerel, a Dogfish and a Garfish made up the nights catch along with lots of Pouting as darkness fell.

Our first trip to Alderney went smoothly, although the forecast wasn’t great for 2 of the days this was one occasion that we were happy the weather man was wrong as the wind got up to nothing more than a breeze. The fishing followed suit with two enjoyable days on the banks targeting the flatfish, we were glad we took some frozen mackerel as the bait fishing could only be described as slow. A big thank you to Mark Harding from Alderney Angling for all the hard work he puts in behind the scenes to make these trips such a nice experience for the anglers. The turbot fishing our side of the channel has also been ticking over nicely with Chris Stride boating our biggest of the year so far at 12lb. Fishing in Poole bay for the

bream has continued to produce great days out. One or two fish around the 3lb 8oz mark are now starting to show along with plenty of smaller fish to keep the rod tips bouncing which are returned for another day. Finally it’s off to the wrecks as we have seen the first of the cod and ling landed as the pollock thin out slightly. A bigger stamp than last year seems to be dotted around with our average size being around 10lb, enough to give a cracking fight on that light gear. Special mention goes to 10 year old Finley Palmer who showed the older lads how it’s done with a 13lb cod on his 12-20 suveran along with a few pollock. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The Black Bream fishing has been very good with many fish being landed and returned, it used to be that anglers only returned the females but it is the male fish that protect the nests once the female has laid her eggs but now the anglers return most of their bream, during this spawning season many rays looking for a snack have been caught on the bream nests giving the anglers unexpected fun a lady angler Ms Vicki Gryba caught 2 Undulate Rays on consecutive drops the best being 14lb. Mackeral / Garfish and Gurnards are being caught and it will not be long before the Tope and other larger predators follow them .The offshore wreck and bank marks have produced good catches of Pollack and Cod one of the best landed to date caught by Conn Bratcher at 20lb 4 ozs on his lucky pink shad, now lost forever on the next drift, I think it is true what anglers say wreck fishing was created by tackle shops to boost turnover. Poole Bream Comp went ahead in ideal conditions with 59 anglers taking part, there were lots of Bream

landed but only those over 2lb 4 ozs were eligible for the prize table. Overall winner was David Lynes with a Bream of 3lb 5ozs fishing on ‘Tommy J’. The top charter boat was Mistress Linda skippered by Philip Higgins who won the Pat Manley Bream Trophy. Brian Moss thought he had a winning fish when his rod bent double only to land a triple shot of Bream weighing in at 2lb 2 ozs , 2lb 1ozs and 1lb 8 ozs and to cap it off landed a lobster. Everyone at the presentation thanked the organiser Mr Andy Robbins of Poole Sea Angling Centre. Looking towards the summer hopefully the weather will be kind and with all the summer species it is a great time to be afloat, if you are an inexperienced boat angler or novice there are many boats offering shorter trips specializing in teaching people to boat fish taking away the worry of could you handle a full day. If you are not sure just talk to your nearest tackle shop and they will point you in the right direction.

Match Report: 1st round of NWASAC Summer League, Caldy, Wirral, Sat 23.4.16. (38 rods) The picturesque Wirral village of Caldy, overlooking the Dee Estuary and facing the Clwydian Hills was mentioned in the Doomsday book as the fishing settlement of Calders. Its beach, a combination of mud, sand and rocky sea defences, played host to the first match of our 2016 Summer League. There was a good attendance but the venue’s relatively poor form continued with winner Heather Lindfield needing just eight fish to take the verdict over veteran Norman Dorling and fellow England International, Ashley Sampson, returning after a year out. Flounders were thin on the ground with very few hooked at the normally productive period when competitors were out in the mud in the early stages of the flood. With a gentle north west breeze, hardly enough to stir the water, fishing was slow throughout the match. Five plaice were caught and it was Gary Ritson's 42cm specimen that took the fish pool.

As with the Mersey Anglers match on the same venue on the previous day, the fish were slow to feed and hard to locate on many of the pegs on a breezy day on the Mersey Estuary. Flounders, in particular, were in short supply and this seems to be a problem this year in both the Mersey and Dee estuaries. Nigel Conlon, fishing by the pumping station, was heading for a win until Morecambe's Dave Hutchinson located a big thornback ray to black lug at the upriver end of Zone B in the last hour of the match. There was another good result for Pete Corker who won Zone A with a mixed bag of fish. Steve Bonner’s solid performance (8th) increased his series lead by one point over Bill Lindfield as we move to the half way point at Crosby on May 22nd. HARTLAND POINT PORBEAGLE SHARK & POLLACK TRIPS Call John Barbeary on 07968 419897 or 01271 864957 for bookings

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

HUGE PORBEAGLE ON REEL DEAL Dan Hawkins Charter Boat ‘Reel Deal” has moved to Ilfracombe for the summer season and has taken customers in search of porbeagle shark from marks West of Hartland Point. The early season big porbeagle proved challenging with several huge fish hooked but not brought to the side of the boat. Perseverance eventually brought its reward however when a huge porbeagle estimated at 450lb was successfully brought to the boat. The huge shark was carefully unhooked and returned to the sea where it swam strongly away. The fish was attracted to the boat using rubby-dubby supplied by Ammo baits. The shark took over 150yards of 50lb b.s line on its first run and was tamed by two anglers. Alex Steal hooking the fish and playing it until he passed the rod to his mate David Brooks who brought the battle to a successful conclusion. The fish was hooked less than a mile from the rocky shoreline and was tempted used a Pollock hook bait. Anglers fishing on Reel Deal have also enjoyed some fine light tackle sport with Pollock to double figures the best specimen a fine Pollock of 10lb 7oz to the rod of Jon Trevett.. Combe Martin SAC members enjoyed a great trip aboard Steve Webber’s Charter boat Osprey off Minehead where thornback ray dominated catches. Close to twenty ray were boated along with numerous smoothound and the inevitable dogfish. Best specimen of the day was a thornback ray scaling 11lb 13oz to myself. Combe Martin SAC member Stefan Jones visited a local rock mark to land three fine early season smoothound scaling 13lb 7oz, 12lb 2oz and 10lb 1oz.

These hard fighting members of the shark family should provide sport throughout the coming months with catches often peaking with the moulting of the spider crab in shallow waters. Kyle Blackmore took top spot in Bideford Angling Clubs latest rover with a thornback ray scaling 6lb 93/4oz. In second and third was Nathan Clements with wrasse of 3lb 91/4oz and 3lb 53/4oz. Andrew Atkinson secured top spot in Appledore Shipbuilders monthly rover weighing in a rockling of 141/2oz. Thomas Atkinson took first and third place in Appledore Shipbuilders boat competition landing bull huss of 12lb 15oz and 11lb 6oz. In second place was David Atkinson with a bull huss scaling 12b 2oz. Thin-lipped grey mullet have moved into the Taw and Torridge estuary giving great sport on light tackle using baited spinners. LRF enthusiasts have been enjoyed sport on Ilfracombe Pier with numerous species tempted. The pier has also produced a few early season garfish with mackerel undoubtedly being caught by the time this goes to press. Bass can be targeted in the lower estuary using peeler crab or lures. Anglers must remember that all bass must be returned to water until July 1st. After this date anglers can take one bass per day. This legislation has been extremely controversial a fact that was pointed out by several anglers who visited the drop in sessions run by the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. It is essential that anglers take the opportunity to make their voices heard at event such as these ensuring that future decisions do not ignore the recreational angling sector that contribute a huge amount to the local economy.

ALDERNEY

ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding The fishing in Alderney is up and down at present. The shore fishing is very slow currently with a lot of blank sessions on marks that have produced the goods so far this year. We would have expected Launce and Mackerel to be showing in good numbers by now, but they just haven’t moved inshore yet, which has probably affected the Pollack and Bass fishing that is usually so productive at this time of year. In contrast, the boat fishing has drastically improved, with the banks starting to fish well for the flatfish, some boats landing in excess of 60 fish in a session up to around 15lb. The wreck fishing has also picked up again, with plenty of Pollack an Cod still being caught by the anglers travelling over to Alderney for their 3-5 day trips. We’ve also had a shore league match this month for which the report can be seen below: Grand Prix Fish Race – 22nd May 2016 Match Results: 1. Darren Braby – 4 species in a time of 6hrs 38m

1st place, so don’t get disheartened! A clever use of Jokers by Mark and Dicky see them both move up the table, with Dicky now level for the 4th spot with James. A credible 3rd and 4th place for Scott Audoire and Fieona Cosheril respectively, see’s both of them also gain vital points in the overall league table, Scott now just 1 point behind Adam Salmon in 2nd place! Well done to James and Kim as well for making the effort to fish despite missing the first 4hrs of the competition, James picking up a credible 6th place finish. Here’s the updated league table: 1. The next match is the brand NEW Top 3 Heaviest Fish match!!! Saturday 4th June. Booking in from 13:30 at the shop, fishing from 14.00-22:00. Each competitor will be given a list of species, all of which will have minimum weights allocated. The aim is to catch 3 species over the minimum weights, with bigger fish being better in the long run. The winner will be the individual with the heaviest bag of fish overall, number of species weighed in also being considered. For example, a 3-species bag total of 5lb would beat a 2 species bag total of 20lb! League Table Top 4 fish the end of year Fish Race Final for a trip to the Florida Keys, so a fair bit at stake here. 9 matches down, 11 to go! Plenty of time for anything to happen! A fun match that definitely turned out to be far harder than first thought. The draw is always so important in these matches, with a good start making all the difference. As it turned out, those lucky enough to draw either Ballan or Corkwing first were all back to draw their 2nd fish within the hour. Dicky held the early advantage after returning with a Ballan in 13 minutes, closely followed by Darren, also with a Ballan just 7 minutes later. Next back to HQ were Scott and Fieona with their Corkwing wrasse. Then came the wave of pass cards, with everyone except Fieona playing at least one before the half way point. Wayne was having a nightmare, drawing out Bass, Garfish and then Dogfish in consecutive picks. All of which no other competitor managed to catch over the duration of the match. Darren was also having a bad run, using all his pass cards on Garfish, Dogfish and Mackerel and then drawing out Mullet, which were also proving difficult to find on the day. Over the next few hours, it was only Mark that managed to weigh in a fish, capturing a Pollack before drawing Bass. With just a few hours left, James and Kim joined the comp fresh from services training. Then things livened up a little, Dicky first bringing a Corkwing to the shop to take a good lead again, before Darren managed to winkle out his Mullet and take back the advantage having then drawn Pollack….the man on fire was back again half an hour later with his Pollack to take the lead with just over an hour remaining. James and Wayne managed to break the deadlock before the final whistle, but Darren again had the final say with a Tompot Blenny to take the win by two species. This win extended his lead over the chasing pack, but remember it’s top 4 that fish the final, not just

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Chris Snow

Things are picking up in the area with some good fishing to be had. In the rivers Arun and Adur Eels and Flounders beginning to show to crab baits , best to fish the flood or ebb . From Worthing through to Selsey Rays still keep a coming with good numbers showing and a variety of species , Thornbacks,Undulates,Small eyeds and spotted have all been reported and wont be long and a Stingray will turn up.Marks to try for one of these would be Bognor West Beach,Clymping or Aldwick/Felpham. To think only a couple of years ago if you said you were going out to target a ray people would have

thought you were a dreamer, how things change !. Bream have also started to make an appearance and fish of 2lb plus have already been landed,Selsey and Pagham would be my choice of venues to catch these great sporting fish and they are great fun to catch on lighter gear , use size 6 or 4 hooks and best baits being strips of squid or ragworm. If we see a prolonged spell of settled and warm weather the first of the Golden Grey mullet could make an appearance with Shoreham giving the best chance to maddie baits on size 6 hooks and lighter rigs . So all in all some good fishing to be had

Ben Karboub - 14lb 12oz stinger.

Ferring beach - undulates.

Ben Karboub - 12lb 10oz undulate.

Selsey - brace of rays.

Just when I thought the weather was improving it all went “Pete Tong” again. The only weekend in the last month with favourable winds coincided with huge tides so no-one ventured out! I did manage a charter trip with my brother Stephen on Wild Frontier from Weymouth on the 14th of May where we managed spurs to 17lb, blondes to 13lb, mackerel, dogs and small turbot though one of the other chaps did catch a fine 16.5lb turbo. Hopefully the weather will improve as we move into summer and we can get in on the hound action as these fish should be in the bay by now.

Fish of the month for April was won by Pete Nicholson with a conger of 23lb 8oz and 94%

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, June 2016

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by James Wigglesworth

Well we are bang into smoothound season now. Huge numbers of fish have taken up residence on our inshore marks and are providing some fantastic sport. In recent weeks the main body of fish had been holed up in Porlock bay but the last few days has seen large numbers move up the channel to the marks off Minehead and Watchet. This last weekend saw some cracking specimens as well. The pick of the bunch being a huge 25lb 4oz fish that fell to Minehead angler Clem Thomas fishing on a private boat from Watchet Marina. Lets hope the action continues for a while yet. Another favorite amongst the anglers that are still showing in great numbers is the mighty bullhuss. Fish to 15lb are being caught regularly on squid and fish baits from Minehead right down to Foreland point. The ray fishing is consistent as ever with some cracking blondes showing up to the 20lb mark. As the water temperature has started to rise lately we have seen the first of the summer species.

The black bream have turned up now. John May seemed to have the best fish of the weekend with a lovely plump bream of 2lb while he was fishing aboard Minehead charter boat Osprey in the BCFSA 2 Man Team event. Areas to the west of Porlock will really start to hot up now which is great news for those who take pleasure in catching the pollock, wrasse and various other species that visit our waters at this time of year. A nice 6lb 4oz pollock was boated by Thornbury angler Dave Rugman who was fishing aboard Alykat recently. With a bit of luck we should see a few mackerel in the coming weeks, which should also in turn bring the first of the tope with them. It really is an exciting time to get out on the water as there are so many different species to target. There is something for everyone so give one of our local skippers a call to find out availability. Good luck if you do get out there and most importantly FISH HARD!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle As predicted in last months report. The first of the shore caught smoothounds have been caught from the shore. Albeit mainly just the odd one or two, to anglers fishing the Porlock Bay area. These fish averaging 5-9lb. That will change any day as the numbers moving inshore increase considerably. Shore marks from Porlock Weir to Weston's sandpoint will all be on the radar for anglers looking to get some hot hound action in the coming month. With the Minehead charter fleet recording exceptional numbers of hounds this year ,it could be a bumper year like we experienced A few years ago, ( well here's hoping ) and the potential for some big specimens is on the cards. Without a doubt peeler crab is king of baits if you want to stand the best possible chance of bagging these awesome sporting species. Live or frozen it makes little difference, but personally I feel the frozen fishes better in the murkier water on the reef marks and further up channel because the scent release is quicker and this helps the fish home in easier. But the flip side is the frozen crab does wash out a lot quicker, so the trick is to keep that scent trail going regardless of bites or not. Besides smoothounds there are plenty of other options throughout the channel. Be it, Sole searching in the upper reaches, hunting down a bass or two, or targeting the resident Thornback population on the Somerset reefs and the marks in the Weston area or taking advantage of a calm balmy evening on the small eyed , spotted and blonde Ray's around Minehead , through to general species and mixed bags of fish from a multitude of

marks. There's a whole host on offer in the Bristol Channel this time of year for the local and visiting anglers to enjoy. One important thing to remember this month is. Crabs will be in very high demand and most tackle can sell their supply twice over. So ordering them in advance at your local is a must. And it's a good idea to stash enough in the freezer to help out when you can't get hold of any. Something myself and many others feel strongly about. Is the way smoothounds are handled and weighed. This is not a sales pitch as I work in a tackle shop to go out and by a cheap light weight weighing sling, just a strong thought of the safely and well being of you catch. There's nothing worse than hanging a writhing smoothound hanging from its delicate gills or from its top lip. They may swim off but the damage caused can be fatal. We don't see carp, chub, and other coarse fish weighed like it so why do some think it's ok to do it to sea fish ???. Sorry to go on but it bugs me much the same as anglers leaving litter behind. Anyway changing the subject and back on to catching fishing, the thing we all love. Those who love their light rock fishing ( LRF ) have loads of offer in the Bristol Channel. Whether it's in the marina at Portishead, Watchet or Minehead harbour or down at Illfracombe. The mini species on offer can be eye opening and fantastic fun. Anyway "summers here" so go and make the most of it. Tightlines and happy hunting

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This month has got off to a much better start with my other engine repaired and lifted back into the boat ready to start the season three weeks later than planed We started our first trips to the off shore banks to see if there were any late Spurs and we were pleasantly surprised with just under thirty fish over one tide, all the fish were returned to the water after being weighed and photographed, they were all into double figures with one pulling the scales to 24lb This trip also turned up Starry S/Hound up to 16lb, plus Tope up to 30lb. There was also a good show of Blondes on this mark but no other type of ray which is rather unusual for this time of year. Inshore the Bream have arrived in good numbers around the Christchurch bay area, all of the females were egged up and were returned to the water, the first few Mackerel have also made a show along with Garfish and the occasional Herring. Offshore the wrecking has started well with a good showing of Pollock and a sprinkle in of Cod, and with the Black water (or May water) in shore its all to go for.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, June 2016

Port Report Hurrah….the bass are here in vast quantities along the Weymouth marks and you Recreational Anglers are able to keep none of them. This is a marvellous step forward in the Conservation of Bass programme and we are very fortunate in being able to watch bass being kept aboard licensed commercial vessels fishing alongside of us. I am enjoying my days off with the cancellations of my bass trips and I see that I, and I am sure many other charter skippers, can look forward to many more days of gardening. In fact I see that the whole of my once full calendar of bass trips in November has now been completely cancelled so I will need advice from those that know… as I haven’t got a clue….what I do in the garden at that time of the year. May has been a good month for inshore fishing out of Weymouth with very good catches of bream, flatfish (but only a very few plaice), rays and spurdog. It’s great to see the spurs are back they used to be a very dependable species many moons ago. The spurdogs are of a very impressive size with many being reported into double figures. These fish are largely released as are the rays, huss and conger these days. Offshore the wrecks have been good for pollock with some excellent specimens being landed. There is the theory that when the cod arrive these big pollack disappear but this has not been the case this month… but that may be because the cod are no-where near as prolific as this time last year. But that may change! The Channel Island trips have been marred by the never ending wind and cold conditions. It is darn chilly at night kipping on the boats in Alderney Harbour. Thank goodness for thermals! When the boats have managed to ease their way to the turbot banks the fishing has been very hard with most of the turbot well under the 45cm size limit that has been ‘agreed’ amongst the RSA sector. Fortunately that have been some outstanding brill to provide a few highlights to what many would describe as extremely hard fishing. But is will soon be June and I see from the ever reliable rubbish posted on the Social Media that we are in for a dramatic heatwave for the whole of that month. Wonderful….I can’t wait. During this predicted period of extended temperature rise we will expect to see more cod on the wrecks which in turn will no doubt lead to more attempts by French trawlers to either ram us or push us off the wrecks. A group on my boat last weekend couldn’t believe what happens at sea and declared that it was like a ‘war zone’ out there. Yes, it is…the French trawler men are dangerous and they know that nothing will be done about their intimidatory tactics. ‘Might is Right’ at sea and our charter boats are small in comparison. Will we be offered any degree of protection against such tactics? I don’t think so! But, on the positive side, anglers will be able to recount tales of Daring Do in the battles at sea with the French fishermen to their wide-eyed grandchildren when sitting by the fire together in November and December during bass trip cancelled days. There should be some mackerel around in June which in turn will allow some wreck anchoring sessions for conger and ling. (The tope fishing in Alderney was at its best in May with the Speedy Rock tope leaving for the Azores on June 7th each year. Now it is impossible

to get mackerel in May which in turn means that the tope fishing does not feature as it used to). The Channel Island trips will feature a greater variety of species in June with bream, rays, huss and pollack being targeted as well as the flatties….and it won’t be long until July when we can at least go bass fishing and keep a fish each per day. The reefing out of Weymouth in June livens up considerably although it has been pretty good already. Expect bream from a greater variety of marks rather than mainly from the ‘Northern Shore’ to the east of Weymouth. Blonde rays, undulate rays and smalleyes will all feature form different and varied marks and each of these marks will have its own regular species in addition to the rays. The Kidney Bank, for example, can often produce turbot and brill plus a cod or bass on occasions. Don’t be surprised when a porbeagle runs off with your pennel rigged blonde ray rig as happened a number of times last year. The Deep Hole and Seven and the Three Mile Ground (marks to the west of Portland) will become increasingly popular for those who enjoy action with the bigger fish such as tope, spurs, huss and conger although there is always an increasing chance of bream on these grounds.

Breams - Fish On II

Wreck caught cod - Fish On II

The inshore wrecks can be good fun with ‘summer pollack’ and bream. It’s good fun to catch the sandeels yourselves as part of the day using small feathers as opposed to mackerel feathers which, although they catch eels, often damage them too much and thus they are no longer ‘live bait’ when the fishing mark is reached. The hunt for the plaice continues. Reports from shore anglers along Chesil Beach show that this has been a good early season for plaice but not so for boat anglers. The usual Shambles Area marks are not holding many plaice so searches along Cjhesil Beach are occurring. The boats don’t want to get too close in to the shore because there will be the inevitable barrage of 6oz leads being hurled towards boat anglers from their irate shore brethren.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick

The mackerel shoals have finally arrived in good numbers along with first light and last light mixed with high water the best time to target them. There has been some very good early fish in the shoals up to 2lb. Sam Truan had a tidy session on the shingle bagging himself some nice plaice. During his session he decided to put a pop up rig out and managed plenty of mackerel along with some good gar fish. Top fishing by him as always. I was down a flat calm Chesil a couple of weeks ago and witnessed with a friend something very large just under the surface creating havoc in the mackerel shoals at speed about 60yards out but could not make out what it was. A few days later on social media i saw reports of other anglers witnessing similar events but also seeing the suspect in the shape of a thresher shark which are impossible to mistake for any other shark species due to the length of the tail fin. There has also been sightings of basking shark no more than 20yards out feeding on the masses of plankton which is an absolutely awesome sight if your lucky enough to be there at the right time. The general fishing along the beach has been very on and off lately with spider crab being an extreme nuisance at times and now the may bloom has also started which does tend to put the fish down a bit. On the plus side the May bloom doesn't last too long. Give it a couple of weeks and the water clarity will be back to normal. It all depends on weather and sea conditions to how long the bloom will last. The fishing hasn't been all doom and gloom as there has been some fairly good numbers of gurnard caught during day light from Abbotsbury to Portland which means the numbers of black bream will not be to far away. Chesil always produces good numbers of red

and tub gurnard during the summer months with a small piece of mackerel being my favoured bait to target them. This year abbotsbury has produced quite a lot of the rarer of the species with the grey gurnard putting in an appearance which is a great one to have for the anglers on there yearly species hunt. Cogden to Abbotsbury is still producing some cracking plaice. Some anglers at Cogden have also been lucky enough to bag the odd turbot. Mainly small fish but more than welcome. The smoothhound has probably been the best species to target lately with some nice fish up to 10lb showing and an average size of 3-5lb. Not massive but good fun all the same. The main reason why there are good hounds to be had is they love crab and year after year as soon as the spiders start the hounds are never too far behind. Best baits to target the smoothhound is hermit or peeler. They love them! Crab baits also tend to keep the spiders off that little bit longer giving fish a chance to find your bait. As for the ray fishing along Chesil, it has slowed up but again i don't think its because they are not there, its the crabs are on the baits before the ray can get to them. Not long now and the spiders will start moving back out to sea giving the fish a chance to take the bait. June is the start of some of the best fishing along Chesil with the black bream showing in numbers by the end of the month along the eastern stretches of the beach. Ferrybridge being the hot spot. Gurnard will well and trully be in and we should also see the first of the red mullet. The hound and ray fishing will keep improving with more and more bigger fish showing along with the start of the big conger at high water in the dark. June can be an extremely good month so get out there ladies and gents and happy hunting.

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO

Laura witha Tompot Blenny

A very rare Topknot caught by Tim Poat Long Spined Sea Scorpion. Caught on a HTO rockfish LRF Rod. Let me introduce myself … I am Charie Tudball, a match angler from Minehead. I have been in the England Youth Shore Team at both the World and Home Nations Championships for the last few years. So you may be thinking why am I writing articles about lrf (light rock fishing)? Especially as I am by no means an LRF expert and I live on the coast of the not so lrf friendly Bristol Channel. What I do is spend hours on rocks, piers, beaches and harbours with an lrf rod in my hand. The thing I love about lrf fishing is that it lends itself to being able to get out, catch some of the most beautiful and interesting fish in our seas in the few spare hours a week we get. In this monthly feature I will be reporting the times I manage to get out for a few hours. I won’t be getting too technical or using complicated LRF related lingo but what I do hope to do is to show you how easy it is get out and enjoy a few hours with a rod in your hand. I will start this month with running you through my first and my current setup. My original setup was was the affordable HTO Rockfish UL rod teamed up with a 2500 sized spinning reel loaded with 6Lb HTO Rockfish Light game PE braid. This combo landed me a huge amount of fish from 5g scorpion fish to

near 2lb wrasse. I have now moved onto the HTO Rock Rover. I chose this as with it being 4 peiced it fits perfectly under the passenger seat in my van so it comes with me wherever I go. It also comes with two tips, a tubular and a solid tip. The tubular one is perfect for chucking shore jigs big distances and helps when putting action into hard plastic lures. The solid tip is more reminiscent of the Rockfish UL which allows you to keep in contact with and fish soft plastic and Marakuyu isome very effectively on dropshot, carolina rigs and jigheads. I have teamed the rock rover up with the Rockfish 2000 reel which allows more finnese and smaller ‘twitches’ due to the smaller sizes of the reel. Again it is loaded it 6lb Rockfish light game braid. This braid for under a tenner is the only “affordable” one on the market that I am aware of. It is a simple “no frills” braid but does its job very well and is perfect for all aspects of LRF fishing. Next month ill be showing you a few of the basic rigs that are commonly used in this fun, easy style of fishing. In the meantime don’t forget to check out our monthly competition we have running and keep you eyes on the page for upcoming LRF match dates and results. Until then tight lines!
