Angling Trust Supports Efforts To Combat Illegal Fishing The Angling Trust is backing a new information campaign by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to tackle illegal fishing. Illegal fishing contributes significantly to the global problem of overfishing, which undermines attempts to manage fish stocks sustainably and threatens the wider marine environment, causing damage to livelihoods and society. The campaign was launched this week at Fishmonger’s Hall in Central London with the Angling Trust representing the rights of recreational anglers. Also at the event were key members of the MMO, representatives from the National Federations of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO), and many of the regional Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs). The campaign aims to raise public awareness about the law and requirements to be registered through the Registered Buyers and Sellers (RBS) scheme in order to legally buy fish caught from licensed, powered, vessels. Illegal fishing encompasses a wide variety of activities. At one end of the scale it can consist of enormous quantities of illegal fish landings, such as the £62 million of illegal fish (170,000 tonnes of mackerel and herring) landed and sold from licensed Scottish fishing vessels between 2002 and 2005. Or the millions of pounds worth of illegal fish landed into Newlyn over more than six years by a wellknown fishing company in the South West before the owners and skippers of the licensed vessels involved were finally prosecuted, in the largest case of its kind to date, in 2009. At the other end of the scale illegal fishing can consist of half a dozen fish caught by rod and line from an unlicensed vessel being sold for cash at a local quayside pub, the cumulative impact of which still negatively impacts all those fishermen, both recreational and commercial, who abide by the rules. Illegal fishing contributes to the wider problem of the historic mismanagement of our publically-owned fish stocks and since illegal sales are unrecorded, effective fisheries management is compromised. The illegal fishing campaign is also backed by the British Hospitality Association, which aims to ensure restaurants make more informed choices in regards to the source of their fish. David Mitchell, Marine Campaigns Manager at the Angling Trust, stated: “The Angling Trust is supportive of any campaign to deal with illegal fishing, which contributes to overfishing and undermines scientists’, fishery managers’ and policy makers’ attempts to manage publically-owned fish stocks sustainably”. “We are disappointed that the focus seems to have already turned towards singling out recreational anglers for the illegal activity of a small number of illegal fishermen selling relatively small amounts of rod and

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
A big improvement in weather has allowed us to explore further afield in our quest to find our anglers fish on the Thames estuary charter boats but results are and have been very predictable with literally thorn back rays were ever we go, when we can get offshore several small hounds showing up lots of rays again and dabs on the sand banks. I have never in the twenty eight years of chartering known a year like it and am reading a diary input that i made this time nineteen years ago ( fished of Clacton pier 2.6 miles off, for twenty two codling up to four pounds, three rays, eight dog fish three dabs and plenty of whiting ). The same day going fast forward this week same area same day thirty three rays no codling plenty of dog fish no dabs and a few whiting. At that time twenty years ago (several wrinkles extra, a lot less hair, and now a greyer shade of brown & a slight limp), we would have too steam some ten miles to catch any decent quantities off rays the reason trammel nets, these nets when set were left out to fish for weeks a death trap to any unsuspecting ray due to their thorns and if these nets were not checked every day the rays caught would roll over in the net get picked off by crabs etc and rot, they were the most destructive form of fishing and often they could not be checked because of gales but would continue to fish on Etc Etc. The reason I am telling you this is because at the moment there is a back lash going on with commercial netting boats with regards bass and once again just
like the furore that occurred with the banning of trammel nets there has and is the same reluctance of commercial netting boats giving up another destructive method of mid water drifting for large breeding bass and as described above the benefits of banning some forms of fishing have been proved to be of benefit. I personally can see the plight of commercial netters with very little quota on many of our species of fish, they to have to put food on the table too and why the powers that be do not give our fishing fleet a larger quota of rays I cannot understand as this would take pressure off of bass stocks. And now back to my first sentence rays were ever we go, but no cod well it is my personnel believe that the codling that have been over the last twenty years in plentiful supply off Clacton-on-sea have disappeared why, it is no coincidence that any imbalance man indused has a effect somewhere in the food chain and the rays are the imbalance feeding on the same food codling do (crabs shrimps small flat fish worms crustations Etc Etc) and if there is no food being a very mobile fish the cod have upped and moved away following the vast migratory herring and sprat shoals if they didn’t they would starve did not any one notice the colour of cod in November when we were catching loads, not the deep green but a very pale colour due to what they were feeding on white fish think about it.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
Well I guess that there is only one ‘plaice’ to start and that’s the once-in-a-lifetime plaice fishing anglers are currently experiencing along the Slapton/ Beesands shore line. Many seasoned Plymouth club anglers can’t recollect ever seeing plaice fishing of such quality, with catches on some days of in excess of 50 plaice per angler. Although the average size is somewhere between 1lb and 1-8 there have been some better fish showing in between and its’ simply a numbers game in terms of finding a better one. Kenny Stovell from Torpoint enjoyed his first ever plaice trip to Besands getting a number of plaice to a top weight of 2-11 whilst Steve King of Rodbenders SAC managed a nice one of 2-9. The following day Rodbenders SAC member Mark Bryce managed to very respectable bag of 20 fish, with the best fish going 1-14. On this particular day distance casting was key to success as those who couldn’t manage to put the lead out those extra few yards (myself included) had little joy. Martin Larkin of Castaways SAC kept his recent good form going with a nice fish of 2-9 whilst unattached Plymouth angler Ricky Maguire also had a nice one of 2-8. I know that some concerns have been raised regarding the number of plaice being kept by some anglers. At the end of the day it’s up to the individual angler if they decide to keep a fish or return it but I do think we do have to do our little bit for conversation and if you have enough fish for the table then please return the rest. You’ll be amazed at how good flatfish are at ejecting deeply set hooks.
caught over the past month was an excellent Blonde Ray of 20-3 from the Somerset low water reefs by Rodbenders clubman Will Ansari. The reefs aren’t known for producing Blondes of such a weight so this really is an outstanding capture. Fellow anglers also caught thornbacks up to 9lb. I have been informed by Malc Jones who operates Sea Angler 2 that he has been doing very well with big ling on the rough ground areas off Plymouth, whilst the wrecks are producing some great cod and Pollack fishing. As I write this Malc has been based up at Dartmouth for the week fishing the Skerries bank and has been getting 40-50 plaice per day up to a top weight of 3lb. I am hopeful that in next month’s report I’ll be able to report on the first captures of my favourite fish the Gilthead Bream. With the temps rising there should now be a good chance of getting the gilts from the various Devon and Cornwall estuary marks. However anglers need to remember that many of these marks can easily be netted, something to bear in mind before telling all and sundry on social media about your latest catch!
Ricky McGuire Plaice 2-0
That’s it from me this month – happy dipping.
Anglers venturing out to open coast marks are still finding some good size bullhuss, with April and May traditionally being the best months for finding a speci huss. Danny Clegg of Rodbenders SAC tried a new rock mark near Dartmouth and was rewarded with a cracking bully of 12-1. The deep water headlands around Devon and Cornwall are really worth a try this time of year and its’ worth taking float gear as the start of May should see the first of the garfish showing and your best chance of getting a really good-sized one. Those anglers that have been seeking the small eyed rays have been finding some good fish, with Mark Bryce catching 4 in one session to a top weight of 9-3 and Steve Federick of Castaways SAC getting one of the same weight on a local mark. Whilst not a local capture one of the stand-out fish

A brand new boat angling magazine is out this month. The first issue of SALTWATER BOAT ANGLING will be published in the middle of May. This exciting new project is being published by Tim Macpherson who currently runs the website Sussex Angling Media and he has enlisted the most experienced start up editor in the country, Jim Whippy, to get the project off the ground. Jim not only started this newspaper back in 1995, he also started Total Sea Fishing for David Hall publishing in 1998. He then went on to start his own magazine Boat Fishing Monthly, in 2001 eventually selling it in 2006.
The magazine will reflect how the sport has moved over the past decade with a specific section for Kayak fishing, including some new exciting young writers. Charter boats will also have a section of their own as Jim believes they are a vital part of the boat fishing experience for both pleasure and competitive anglers. Dinghy anglers and private boats moored in marinas all round the UK will also have plenty of coverage. The magazine will have regular boat tests, review all new tackle and generally keep a close watch on any trends and methods used by modern boat anglers. In the shops from middle of may. ‌..

Fishing on the drift has been most of our days out over the last month, either on the wrecks or on the sand for the flatties. The abundance of herring spread out over the ground has been a good source of fresh bait to help target the turbot. Plenty of fish coming to the net but it’s also good to see anglers getting involved in catch and release to keep numbers up for the future. We have managed our first bream of the year but for the first time ever it didn’t come from the inshore reefs. It took a squid bait whilst anchored up on a wreck about
30 miles off, at 3lb 8oz it is probably one of the bigger bream we have had to open the season with. Elsewhere on the wrecks the pollock continue to provide good sport and we have also had the first few cod up to about the 8lb mark. Out on a flat calm day yesterday we were also treated to the rare sight of a coalfish amongst the pollock. Next week we shall be heading across to Alderney for the first time this season. POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins March again was a struggle with the weather and Easter was a wash out with storm Katie but the fishing was good catches of big Spurdogs and Rays along with Bull Huss and Congers when you could venture out. As April arrived the opportunity to venture further afield presented itself and for those boats that did produced good catches of Pollack to 16lb and some early Cod from the wrecks. Trips to the Turbot marks have seen catches of up to 13 turbot mainly on the small side in amongst these are a few better fish with T Partridge landing one of 12lb aboard Mistress Linda. On the inshore marks we are still catching Whiting and Rays but the main target species are Plaice and Bream, to start with these were somewhat illusive thanks to the colour of the water but as this cleared catches have started to increase each trip. It will not be long before the Bream fishing is in full swing so book your places early to avoid disappointment. Sea Angling News, May 2016
Future of Tidal Lagoons in Doubt as Delays Stack up Angling Trust Angling and wildlife conservation interests are hopeful that the proposed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon – and others which have been mooted for Cardiff, Newport and Bridgwater – will not now go ahead as planned after a number of setbacks, including:
Barry Bowman caught this thornback from ' Hannah' at Watchet
James trevett with a nice brill and turbot combo from the shambles out on the boat Atlanta with Dave Pitman.
• the recent announcement by the Government of a six month review of the economic case for lagoons and whether or not they offer value for money for tax and billpayers; • refusal by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) of the developer’s proposed ‘strike price’ (price subsidy) for the Swansea project; • delays and difficulties in the discharge of conditions attached to the Development Consent Order issued in June 2015; • a successful judicial review brought by a community campaign group which will block existing plans to mine and transport the rock required to build the lagoons; • news that the Marine Licence needed from Natural Resources Wales has run into difficulties following a belated recognition of fisheries concerns and possible incompatibility of the proposed project with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), as highlighted by Fish Legal and the Angling Trust over the past year. The CEO of Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay (TLSB) Mark Shorrock was reported on 10th February as saying that he had warned the UK Government it must decide if it is going to back the £1 billion project “in the next four to six weeks” or the project would run into real problems. However, later that day, when the review was announced which would delay the project by 8 or 9 months, he said that he took “the UK Government's unexpected announcement of a review into tidal lagoon energy as an endorsement of the far-advanced plans for the Swansea scheme” and that he had "a letter from Energy Secretary Amber Rudd” which he said “showed the UK government was prepared to look at long term funding for the project”; and "I have got absolute confidence that we are now on the glide path to pulling this off”.
Mike spiller with a red band fish out from Weymouth on Atlanta. Terry hartnell will his 4-10-8 plaice caught at Eastney in their open comp. Terry came 4th and won his section and had the flat pool. This will also be a new club record for honiton.
Fish Legal and the Angling Trust have established via a Freedom of Information request, however, that the letter from Amber Rudd actually said: “I have discussed these matters with my cabinet colleagues and we have concluded that your strike price offer is not in the best interest of consumers” and that whilst “DECC and the Treasury are ready to continue working with you and your partners to ensure that we fully understand the detail of your key offer”, TLSB's “key alternative offer” was “a significant deviation” from the basis upon which DECC had commenced discussions with the company; and that: “in particular we need to fully evaluate the implications of transferring additional risks to the consumer”. Meanwhile, although TLSB secured a Development Consent Order (DCO) in June 2015, it has been unable to make significant progress with the discharge of conditions ("Requirements") attached to the DCO, because the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot local authorities don't have the necessary jurisdiction to deal with offshore matters. Their jurisdiction currently ends at the low water mark and extending

that is a complicated process which is likely to take some time. TLSB also needs a number of consents – in particular the Marine Licence – from the regulator Natural Resources Wales (NRW), which has a legal duty to protect fisheries and to ensure that no water bodies deteriorate under the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Fisheries interests have been arguing from the outset that: • TLSB's modelling of fisheries effects has been flawed and based on unrealistic assumptions; • TLSB’s predictions of the likely impacts on fisheries, particularly salmon and sea trout, and on the WFD ecological status of waterbodies in the Swansea Bay rivers (Tawe, Neath and Afan) have been seriously understated; • Proposals for monitoring the impacts and countering them are wholly inadequate. Internal NRW briefings seen by Fish Legal and the Angling Trust indicate that NRW experts agree with this analysis. The documents show that the process for determining the consents is now likely to take many more months and that refusal of the required Marine Licence is being contemplated, which would prevent the lagoon being built. Swansea Bay was intended to be the first of a ‘necklace’ of lagoons around the Severn Estuary and in other parts of the country. TLSB has tried to justify the high strike price it has been demanding from government on the basis that Swansea would be a prototype for the larger lagoons elsewhere, which because of their larger size would be able to generate power more cheaply. Angling and wildlife conservation groups have argued that, without the other lagoons, Swansea doesn't make energy sense. However, approvals for the others, particularly Cardiff, Newport and Bridgwater Bay, would be much more difficult to obtain because of their much greater environmental impacts and the protective designations which those areas enjoy (including Special Area of Conservation status under the EU Habitats Directive). Anglers and conservationists also argue that, if the economic case is being made on the basis that there will be multiple lagoons, the environmental impact should be considered on the same ‘cumulative’ basis, rather than looking at Swansea in isolation. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “In light of all these difficulties, it seems likely that construction is going to be significantly delayed once again. Indeed, it seems that the whole project may be in doubt because of its environmental impact on fish and other wildlife and the cost to the taxpayer. We will keep pressing the regulator to take a firm line in protecting already threatened marine and migratory fish species that are a vitally important part of the delicate ecosystem of the Severn Estuary and of the local and regional economy. We welcome the government review and urge Ministers to consider carefully how tidal energy can be exploited in more sustainable ways that do not threaten fisheries or the natural environment.”

NWASAC Match report: 3rd Round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2016, Sun 10.4.16, Caldy, South Wirral (31 rods). This third round was fished on a bright and very breezy day on a stretch of the Wirral side of the Dee Estuary that has recently seen additional sea defences, making access more difficult. There were fewer flounders than expected but small fish of other species helped to compensate for this on some pegs. In form Wallasey angler, Steven Bonner won Zone B to take the win with 227 weight conversion points (by a remarkable coincidence, he won the Golden Peg jackpot of £227 in the process!). Pete Corker from Flintshire on the opposite side of the estuary took second by winning Zone A. England international, Bill Lindfield, did the double by winning both fish pools, flat and round and moved ahead of wife Heather by one point; they lead the Pairs championship by a healthy margin. Steve’s win means that he has only dropped one championship point in three matches and has increased his series lead.

We had a home shore comp at Shore Road, Sandbanks on Tuesday night 22/03/16. Members fished along the beach on what was a very calm night, no wind at all but a little chilly. Bites were hard to come by and rather slow which is not unusual at this time of year. Paul Driver won on the night with 74cm, Nigel Back second with 58cm and Brian Read third with 41cm. Species caught on the night were Flounder, Rockling and a very small Plaice. No whiting were caught which was a surprise. We had a club home shore comp on Saturday night 26/03/16 at Branksome Chine. On what was a very windy day with storm force winds hitting the coast line and threatening to cancel the comp, it turned out calm after the storm on the evening. Members fished along the beach in quite a lot of choppy surf at the start of the match, which looked ideal for Bass and quite a few were caught. Chris Mackenzie won on the night with a number of school Bass with a few whiting and a Poor Cod for 173cm, Phil Thomas Second and Brian Read Third. The Nights catch was dominated by school Bass. After the early spring doldrums the sea angler has much to look forward to as summer species start to arrive. Smoothound are now being caught up channel off Minehead and will soon show at their familiar haunts along the North Devon coast. Mackerel have arrived in the Atlantic waters off the North Cornish coast and porbeagle shark have already been hooked by enterprising anglers who have ventured out in search of these large and powerful apex predators. Anglers have been enjoying some exciting sport off Ilfracombe aboard John Barbeary’s Charter boat Bluefin with spurdog dominating catches. Parties have enjoyed hauls of up to 100 spurdog per day with fish close to twenty pounds landed. Thomas Atkinson landed a spurdog of 16lb 8oz and David Atkinson fine specimens of 19lb 8oz and 17lb 2oz. In addition to spurdog numerous bull huss and conger were boated. Combe Martin SAC Member Kevin Legge landed a fine conger scaling 22lb whilst fishing a local rock mark. Spring is often a good time to target bull huss

ALDERNEY
ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding SHORE SPORT It has been up and down of late, what has been good though is that the Red Mullet have been holding on, the latest I have ever known them to be here. Hopefully a resurgence because up until last year they have not been too prolific. Nothing too big with the best of them around 1lb to 1lb 8oz. Plenty of Bream here too – nothing big – two dominant species with the Black and Couches being nice to catch. BUT – we have had spells of Gilthead Bream. Awesome fish especially when they have been as big as they have been. Darren Braby caught the best at 4lb 14oz in a night when he had 5 with 3 of them over 4lb! There has been a few Bass around too. From the shore we are not under the EU legislation but have a 3 Bass bag limit so always nice to eat one or two. Mostly fish we’re seeing are 1-3lb so you can see why limits have been imposed but Jacob Maurice had the best fish last month which dropped the scales to 8lb 5oz. Thick Lipped Mullet are being caught pretty frequently when targeted too, once again no monsters but catching one of 4lb shouldn’t be a problem. Adam Salmon – new to this – had a PB of 3lb 11oz. Gars are sparse, Mackerel are being caught with some frequency?? Yes – that’s what I thought – funny how the cycles are working isn’t it? Lastly if you want rod bending action then there has been a fair few Pollack to 5lb caught on the lures. BOAT SPORT What boat sport?? It’s a humdinger at the moment, really tough early doors but that can only be good as we’ve not missed the best of it for sure. It will improve – that improvement will probably tale place right this minute so by the time you are reading this there will be a contradiction. Turbot fishing not what it should be but the wrecking is brilliant. Pollack to 19lb, Ling to 29lb and a smattering of Cod. Next month will be good, looking forward to it. Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 Best Specimen 24 Hour Accumulative % – 2nd April 2016 A demanding event this one – lots of planning, commitment and dedication to snare as many species as you can over qualifying weight from the nominated list. Like a mini festival! Fishing was tough, something we knew based on how it has been the last couple of weeks but well done to all for giving it a thoroughly good go. Only 5 managed to weigh in from the 14 competitors which proved how tough it was, well done to Darren for coming out on top with 138% and a massive well done (despite the yellow card haha) to Kim Le Poullain on her second place which has fired her up the table and added some decent points in the pairs too. Credit to Adam Salmon who managed the most species over qualifying weight with 3 and took 3rd – well done and reward for staying awake the whole 24 hours! Heaviest fish went to Darren for a 3lb 9oz Mullet. Some nice Gilthead Breams were caught too with Wayne Cosheril getting the biggest at 3lb 2oz – unfortunately they weren’t on the list! No one playing any jokers yet? You scared?? Here are the overall results and updated league positions: Darren Braby – T/L Mullet and LSD – 138% Kim Le Poullain – LSD/Red Mullet – 126% Adam Salmon – Pollack/Scad/3B Rockling – 96% Scott Audoire – 3B Rockling – 42% Andrew Black – Pollack – 32% Best Specimen – 9th April 2016 What a toughie this one was, fishing not great and you had to really scratch to find some fish. 11 people entered and only 5 weighed in whom were ecstatic and relieved at the thought of maximising out on points over their colleagues who never managed to score. Tough, tough match! Match Results: Darren Braby – LSD 2lb 1oz – 84% Adam Salmon – Thick Lipped Mullet 3lb 11oz – 52% James Clarke – Red Mullet 13oz – 32% Andrew Scott – Gilthead Bream 1lb 11oz – 31% Alistair Walters – Scad 11oz – 30% Pegged Match Platte Saline – 25th April 2016 Another tough match as 13 brave souls did battle on the beach in a cold easterly wind. An additional unplanned handicap was the fact they were wormless due to the foggy weather so thinking outside the box was required but even if the right plan was hatched it wasn’t going to guarantee success. Drawing peg 1 (I did say James to put peg one on the sewer pipe ;-) ) squeezed up against the rock at Doyle end Darren won with 157cm consisting of 2 Dogfish and a Bass which all came out just after mid match in 4 casts in a flurry of activity. Darren has now won 5 out of the first 7 matches and is steaming ahead in the League table. Fieona had her best result this year and caught the heaviest fish of the match with a 60cm Dogfish. In third place was a very rare thing indeed – no not a fish but a Dicky! Yep – all browned up from his holiday in Costa Rica Dicky showed he was back with a 35cm Bass and in 4th place was Alistair Walters with a Pout. Congratulations to all – tough match again. Match Results: Darren Braby – 157cm Fieona Cosheril – 60cm Dicky Smith – 35cm Alistair Walters – Pout The next match is the 24 Hour Species Hunt starting at midday on Saturday 7th May. Booking in from 11.30am at the shop, weigh in from midday Sunday. ID cards issued at booking in – no need to retain fish just photograph them on the card and present at ‘weigh in’. Goby/Blenny count as one. No rock pools. No size limits. Two rods with max 4 hooks. Good luck. League Table Top 4 fish the end of year Fish Race Final for a trip to the Florida Keys, so a fair bit at stake here. 7 matches down now and 13 to go so still plenty of time. At last Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club finally got its Shallow Boat section off to a good start for its 2016 season on Sunday 25th April, after competitions at the start of the year had to be cancelled due to bad weather and high winds. 6 club members managed to get their boats out. The weather was dry, cloudy and cold, but sadly it turned a bit breezy. Fish caught included dogfish, pout, whiting, bass, 3/b rockling, plaice and smoothhound. The heaviest fish to weigh in was a plaice of 2lb 7ozs caught by Phil Morgan. But the highlight was a 3/b rockling weighing 1lb 11ozs which was 112.5% of specimen weight and caught by Denis Mapes. Results: 1st Bary Littlefair 7 fish 21lbs. 2nd Robert Miness 8fish 11lbs 7ozs. 3rd Denis Mapes 10 fish 9lb 15ozs. 4th Phil Morgan 5 fish 9lb 6ozs. 5th Alan Martin 6 fish 7lb 5ozs. 6th Adrian Moody 7 fish 7lb 3ozs. West Bay SAC The Fred Tolley Memorial Trophy 16th April West Bay Fortunately the very wet conditions of the day before gave way to cloud with sunny spells for the first fixture of the Saturday Junior season on the East Pier at West Bay. 10 West Bay S.A.C. junior members signed on to fish this opening match held in memory of the late Fred Tolley and although dry, all had to suffer a very cold northerly breeze. Flat calm sea conditions greeted the junior competitors although the water was very coloured. 7 competitors managed to weigh in with James Lawrence taking the lead with the first fish of the season, a shanny, but this was short lived as Ewan Chambers followed almost instantly with a sizeable shore rockling and continued landing a string of rockling with all but one of a legal size. The first flounder of the year came to Kai Kenway (who also had the only corkwing wrasse of the match which secured him third place) but Jamie Salvador Swords produced a slightly larger specimen to claim the heaviest flatfish prize. The pattern of seeing the venomous weever fish appearing very early in the year seems to be continuing with Owen Swatridge the lucky captor. Ewan Chambers continued leading the field with the only one real challenger, his brother Aaron Chambers, landing a 258

g shore rockling; this fish turned out to be the biggest of the match. Other species on the day came to Nathan McMaster who caught a tompot blenny and a sea scorpion. All fish were returned to the water. Junior matches continue throughout the year until Christmas and beginners are very welcome to come and have a go. Guests can fish matches twice with entry fees just a pound and tackle can be provided; for more details see the West Bay Sea Angling Club website or visit the Angling Centre, West Bay. The junior section would like to extend their gratitude to the Watchouse Cafe for their support again this year. Prize winners as follows: 1st Ewan Chambers 541 g (486 g sizeable) 2nd Aaron Chambers 377 g (258 g sizeable) 3rd Kai Kenway 143 g Heaviest flat: Jamie Salvador Swords 45 g flounder Heaviest round: Aaron Chambers shore rockling 258 g First fish of the season: James Lawrence Last fish: Aaron Chambers Smallest fish: James Lawrence/Ewan Chambers Heaviest weever: Owen Swatridge Wooden spoon: Ollie Butler Sponsors on the day: Watchouse Cafe, Kay Guppy, Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw, Kevin Butler and Donna Salvador Swords.

Free Postage and Package on orders over ÂŁ10 Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association Fishing and the weather is definitely on the up in Bridgewater bay with the arrival of spring. Thornback numbers have increased with fish into double figures showing regularly, boats are catching anything up to 25 rays between 2 anglers. Codling numbers have dipped but this isn't unusual and we will hopefully get another run of fish before they move back down channel. There is a lot of conger out there at the moment, mainly straps but a few decent ones and dogs ever present. The first bass of the season has been caught (and released) by Mark Bowden. It has to be said it is a ridiculous situation we find ourselves in when all bass caught by recreational anglers have to be returned until the 1st July whilst some of the commercial fleet have had an increase in their catch allowance!! March 20th on a cold and breezy morning 5 boats with 14 seniors and 1 junior aboard fished the first comp of the year, The Vicoue Trophy. Most boats caught plenty of fish with Aaron Devey on Ultra White coming out on top taking both first and second place. 1st Aaron Devey blonde ray 17lb 8oz 97% 2nd Aaron Devey thornback 11lb 2oz 72% 3rd Terry Garrett thornback 10lb 2oz 65% The pools was won by Andy Georgiou with a cod of 7lb 10oz. As Aaron is not a club member the Vicoue Trophy went to Terry with his thornie. Three boats got out on the first Sunday in April and had a good days fishing returning well over 50 thornies, lots of eels and a few dogs between them.
6lb + bass returned by Andy Georgiou
Biggest thornie went 13lb 8oz for Pete Nicholson and biggest eel went 16lb 10oz for Mark Bowden. April 17th saw 5 boats and 13 anglers fish the Ray Farthing trophy from Burnham. A chilly start turned into a lovely bright day and lots of fish were caught, most returned with only 5 coming back to the scales. Lots of sub 10lb thornies, straps, dogs, codling and a cracking bass around 6lb for Andy Georgiou (returned of course) made up the catches. 1st Pete Nicholson conger 23lb 8oz 94% 2nd Martin Quinn doggie 2lb 6oz 68% 3rd James Devey, Craig Willis, Stephen Saxby doggie 2lb 4oz 64% Pete kept his eel alive in a tank on their boat and returned it after the weigh in which entertained a few spectators on the beach.

NEWS / WATCHET
ANGLING TRUST CALLS ON MARINE MANAGEMENT ORGANISATION TO HELP TACKLE ILLEGAL BASS FISHING The Angling Trust has called on the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to investigate reports of licensed fishing vessels illegally drift netting for bass off the Essex coast. Drift netting for bass was banned by the EU in January as part of a range of measures to protect bass. However, reports from local anglers based in the rivers Crouch, Roach, Blackwater and Colne, have reported several incidents of the EU conservation measures being ignored with drift nets being used by licensed vessels fishing for bass. They claim banned nets are used to target huge shoals of spawning bass that gather off the Suffolk and Essex coast during April, May and June in order to spawn. They also allege that by increasing mesh size from 90mm to 100mm and fishing at the right depth, fishermen have been able to skim off female fish between seven and fourteen pounds and sell them to foreign markets where these larger fish are popular. Fishermen claim they are using the drift nets to target cod and not bass but local reports indicate that the cod moved offshore some weeks ago and the nets are now being used to illegally target bass. Whether directly targeted or caught as a bycatch in the cod fishery no bass caught using drift nets should be being landed or entering the market. Anglers are frustrated by the Kent & Essex IFCA’s failure to respond to this illegal fishing and a post on the Kent & Essex Sea Anglers' Facebook page about the issue has already received over 6,000 views since it was posted last Friday. The Angling Trust has asked the MMO, which only last week launched a campaign to tackle illegal fishing, to support the Kent & Essex IFCA in investigating the reports and taking appropriate action should licensed vessel owners be caught using banned drift nets to target bass. The Angling Trust has itself launched a new campaign to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and is encouraging the MMO and other agencies to develop a new centralised intelligence-
led marine illegal fishing initiative which can log, investigate and share reports and intelligence of illegal fishing activity at sea. In the meantime, any illegal fishing should be reported by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or by contacting the IFCAs and MMO directly. Mike Sharp, a local angler and former MMO appointee to the Kent & Essex IFCA, said: “I urge all government authorities to work together and thoroughly investigate what is going on within the district. UK bass stocks are at a point where recovery will be impossible to achieve if we continue to allow current conservation measures to be ignored. It won't be long before a pensioner will be attending the local magistrate’s court because he took a bass he caught from a local pier home for his tea when the real damage to stocks is being allowed to continue."
RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II
David Mitchell, Marine Campaigns Manager for the Angling Trust, said: “Illegal fishing like this is undermining attempts to stabilise bass stocks which are in danger of facing a total collapse. "Recreational anglers legally required to return all the bass they catch until July 1st are justifiably frustrated by licensed vessels flagrantly ignoring the law. With the recent launch of the MMO’s campaign to tackle illegal fishing, we look forward to the MMO investigating these reports and supporting the Kent & Essex IFCA in prosecuting any vessel found to have been using illegal methods to catch and sell bass. "Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing damages all of us.” Meanwhile licensed vessels using fixed nets to target bass are legally allowed to land up to 1.3 tonnes of bass per month. Recreational anglers are required to release all bass until July 1st after which a one-fishper-day bag limit will apply for the second half of 2016.

INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT MEETS SCOTTISH TRACEABILITY BUSINESS TO ELIMINATE ILLEGAL FISHING The Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, has met with Traceall Global today as part of a visit programme to Scotland to launch a project that aims to reduce illegal fishing, which is costing Indonesia $20bn a year*. Illegal fishing in Indonesian waters is a huge issue for the government’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF). Although currently capturing 1.5 tonnes of illegal fish annually** it faces difficulties in tracking vessels around the country’s islands and archipelagos. As part of her visit, the Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work with, Glasgow based, Traceall Global to carry out an initial pilot project aimed at reducing illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). The aim of the full rollout of Traceall Global’s FishTrace Technology will be to use advanced monitoring and traceability technology to eliminate IUU completely. Traceall Global will work with the Indonesian Government to develop an electronic fisheries management logbook, eliminating the existing paper based logging process moving all data capture to 24-hour real time systems. The new systems will be implemented on all Indonesian fishing vessels to support the tracking and traceability of their fishing catch and achieve the Indonesian Government’s objective of stopping illegal fishing. Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, said: “Illegal fishing is a massive issue in Indonesia which is currently costing the Indonesian economy $20bn each year. In order to protect the depleted stocks in Indonesian waters, we have been destroying the illegal fishing vessels, however this is not something we can sustain. The traceability software we are using via Traceall Global will help us eliminate IUU and provide full traceability throughout our supply chain.”
Traceall Global CEO, Alan Steele, said: “Since seeing my own local fishing community in Scotland deplete 30 years ago, it has been my passion to put fish back in our oceans. To achieve this we have been working with partners around the world, combatting IUU, slavery and unsustainable overfishing.
Young Cotney with a Bullhuss - Seafire II
“It is truly compelling to see such commitment and pro-activity from the Indonesian Government, as they seek to work together with us and the fishing fleets in Indonesia to remove all illegal fishing and slavery. It has been a privilege to host Minister Susi Pudjiastuti in Scotland and plan how Traceall Global can help her achieve her objective of eliminating IUU completely.” The Indonesian Government met with Traceall Global for the MOU signing in Glasgow on Thursday 21st April, and then will travel to Edinburgh where over 100 Indonesian students will meet with Susi Pudjiastuti. To support the implementation of the Traceall Global traceability system in Indonesia the business will initially be employing two Indonesian Business students to work with the team from their headquarters in Glasgow with the aim of growing the team significantly as the project rolls out. This week Bali Seafoods has also signed a MOU with Traceall Global to install their traceability software into four processing plants that are in development in Indonesia. This will be one of the first fully integrated traceability systems in Indonesia reflecting the Governments regulations on IUU. In Europe Traceall Global has previously worked with the EU Government to develop the European Commission laws on Food Traceability. It has also helped the UK Government (DEFRA) create electronic traceability standards for the UK fishing industry, to eliminate illegal fishing and over-fishing, which resulted in a 100% reduction.

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by Dave Roberts
Minehead charters producing good bags as the spring migration comes to fruition. Smoothounds to around twenty pounds prolific from most recognised marks. These fish love to hunt around rough patches where crabs of all species will be readily taken. Any form of crab bait will be hungrily sought by the marauding packs of these fantastic sportfish. Even hardbacks will take good numbers and as they are free and not costing over a pound apiece like their peeling brethren, it makes sense to give them a try. Bull huss again superb with many double figure fish being taken. This species has done remarkably well over the past few years which may be a result of
conservation measures from both the recreational and commercial sectors. Sandbanks continuing to show rays with specimen small eyed and blondes featuring in many charter trips. With every silver lining there is invariably a cloud and ours comes in the form of the blessed dogfish. These hardy little survivors must be one of the most successful creatures on the planet. At this time of year they seem to be absolutely everywhere taking any bait offered. The answer is to persevere and fight your way through the dogfish pain barrier. Offshore, one or two early tope also coming into the equation showing great promise for the next few weeks in this prolific part of the world.

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL
BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle This past month has been a bit random if I'm honest . We've seen a few settled spells that gave some lovely Spring like conditions that switched the fish on and then the complete opposite. There's been some fantastic fish caught amongst heaps of small codling . In the upper parts around Portishead as far down as Minehead these greedy 25cm-40cm codling are hitting baits within minutes of them hitting the water if you have a shoal in front of you. The better stamp of codling seem to be hanging on in the area around Clevedon and Weston. We had anticipated these codling to have moved down channel to the Somerset reef marks by now, but as yet they remain thin on the ground on the reefs with just the odd 3-5lber reported from the reefs. Ray's on the other hand have been showing really well with plenty of the trusty Thornback. But a few exceptional fish that have stood out have been blonde Ray's that are not so common along the reefs. Firstly Willian Ansari bagged a stunner of 20lb3oz and a couple of weeks later Ryan Williams bags a beauty of 17lb8oz from a mark a few miles down. And then Joe Romano bagged one at 17lb1oz from white Mark at Minehead. Well done guys three lovely Ray's there. Some nice bass have been showing up on high and low water marks with fish around 3-5lb. They are A worthy target fish and it's well worth sticking a 3rd rod out and lobbing a bait 20-40m out or closer in some cases. Fresh crab, worm or a whole squid bait for these bass.

Small eyed and spotted Ray's catches have been steady over low water at Minehead. Along with the Rays small turbot started to show in catches around this area . They can be great fun to catch on light tackle, it's a shame we don't see many over the 2lb mark ,but a nice little fish to catch none the less. With May nearly upon us many will be hoping the smoothounds start to make an appearance. The boats have been getting a few the past month but as yet there's been no reports of a stray one visiting the beaches. I would of thought by the end of May and next months report one or two would of set a ratchet click away nicely or catch someone off guard. The Bristol Channel federation Spring open fished between Blue anchor and Minehead this past month proved very hard going for the 75 anglers that signed in. It was great to see considering the tuff conditions. Small tides, clear water and sunshine didn't help the cause. The small tides would have been fine if there had been some colour in the water and it had been overcast. Winner on the day was Richard Allwood of the Reef Raiders S.A.C, snatching a couple of the turbot( 65cm) that have been present on Minehead town beach recently . 2nd place went to Steve Liddle of West Coast Angling/tackle Center with a dogfish for 62cm and 3rd place going to Chris Stevens with 59cm . Over all just 8 anglers caught 9 fish. It's not really a true picture of how it's been fishing lately to be honest, it was just the conditions proved to much on the day. That's fishing I guess.

Ryan Williams with a cracking 17lb8oz Blonde Ray
Something quite noticeable is the lack of general anglers getting out and about mid week. Speaking to anglers up and down the channel, it would seem many popular marks along the channel are almost empty and anglers venturing out are having marks pretty much to themselves when it common to find anglers on the popular marks on their day off . I'm sure the in coming smoothound fever will strike soon and ignite the spark to get those rods out that have been laid up for a while. For anyone looking to get a regular update on what's happening around the Bristol Channel on both the English and Welsh side check out the Bristol Channel fishing.com web site or check out the Facebook page. Anyway I hope you all find some fish this coming month. Tightlines and happy hunting... Minehead angler Joe Romano with a fine 17lb Blonde Ray

However we have lifted the engine out and off for repair and should be back next week, It was even more painful when you see what was being caught around the West Wight area.

The Plaice fishing which started off a little slow has now improved with some boats going into double figures, these fish are not big with many being returned but there were a few around the three pound mark which are good for the pot. We also picked up our first bream of the year which must have been passing over the clear ground, these were female fish around 2.5lb and were returned to the water, so give it another week or so and they should be over the usual marks. Sea Angling News, May 2016
Port Report Resting peacefully in the graveyard of East Coker, Somerset, are the remains of that celebrated poet T.S.Eliot. At this point I can just see hoards of appreciative anglers leaping about and quoting extracts from ‘The Wasteland’ and in particular from the ‘What The Thunder Said’ section. Admirable though this is, it is the epic lines ‘April is the cruellest month’ that interests me. Our fourth month is thus described because it is when hibernating creatures reluctantly crawl or swim out of hibernation to enter the world of the awake and living. This just about sums up what is happening ‘out there’ at the moment with a few tentative bites here and plucks there…. but it is very slowly getting better.
The Shambles will continue to produce a few small turbot and, on special days, a really good specimen will turn up. The Weymouth Charter boats will venture further west around Portland Bill to fish the many excellent inshore marks offering rays, spurdog, huss, tope, conger and the usual array of dogs and pouts.

The Channel Island trips are now underway. So far they have been very hard work in cold conditions with just a few turbot to show for the effort. Warmer conditions will certainly make these trips more pleasant and hopefully bring in a few mackerel for fresh bait although launce are readily available and most of the turbot have been taken on them.

The fine run of pollack experienced in February and March has given way to mainly small fish. This is apparently good because the cod will follow and bully them out of the way to take up residence on all our favourite marks. A couple of visits to several of these favourite marks over the past week has resulted in the first hesitant catches of cod which is very welcome news. As ever, it is the brightly coloured lures which are proving popular with Rhubarb and Custard the favourite. Inshore fishing on the Shambles Bank has produced a few turbot with a couple into double figures. Anchoring sessions for these flatfish proved more productive than the usual drift methods. When anchored rays, whiting, small pollack and dogfish are also taking the nicely presented turbot baits so there is some variety to be had inbetween the intended quarry! General reefing has also produced the very first black bream along the ‘northern’ shore to the east of Weymouth and anchoring sessions on banks to the west of Portland have been excellent for blonde ray action. May is when it will all come alive! We will expect some nice catches of cod along with a few small and the occasional double figure Pollack. There will be an occasional ling taking the bait. The bream fishing will improve magnificently from the northern shore especially the Warbarrow marks and Windspit areas as well as east side rough ground marks where mixed catches of rays, dogs and pout will feature along with an occasional rig busting strap conger.
I guess the bass situation is one that concerns many and the dismay at how the promises of conservation measures were all as hollow as ever and how the Recreational Sector has been treated. I am sure we all thought we were getting somewhere in terms of sensible recognition as Stakeholders but we have not. We are pretty well back to square one in that the RSA is seen as unimportant. We have been sacrificed for some kind of political agenda and the ramifications are extremely serious for the Charter Boat Industry, a section of the Marine Community that DEFRA probably doesn’t even know exists. It seems we must start the fight for recognition all over again. We have all been here before; we have all written letters and jumped up and down on Facebook threatening this and banging that and we have got….nowhere! Right now there are efforts to reunite the charter world. It ain’t easy as people are understandably jaded and cynical but we must not give up as it looks like there are more battles looming and we must be prepared for them. The framework for unity is in place for the Charter Skippers…and it is up to them as individuals if they use it….but it is probably harder for the majority of anglers who ‘just want a nice day out’ without all the politics and strife. Sea Anglers do have a Representative Body but are reluctant to become involved in it. It would be very revealing for any disenchanted RSA’s to write an article for SAN explaining, in detail, their feelings about their representation and why they feel like that.

INTERNATIONAL
CHASING A DREAM IN COSTA RICA! 18 years working in an office is a long time. With unwavering support from the mrs, in 2015 we decided to move to Costa Rica to chase a dream and establish our new fishing charter operation, Jackpot Sport Fishing. I am originally from the Isle of Man, have been fishing my whole life and around the world since I was old enough. We run a 31 foot Costa Rican custom built Sport Fishing Boat called the ‘Good Day’ out of the beautiful Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, a 100 slip world class Marina on the Central Pacific coast, just 10 minutes from the Manuel Antonio National Park where the primary lodging & dining options are located. Quepos is a 2.5 hour scenic drive from the International Airport or alternatively can be reached by a 25 minute domestic flight. The Fishing Costa Rica is one of the top Sailfish destinations in the world with an abundance of big Pacific Sailfish being caught year round. Fish average around 70lb with fish up to 140lb common which provide excellent sport on light 20-30lb class tackle…..or on Fly when the fish are here in numbers. When the fishing is on fire it is possible to catch 20+ Sailfish in a day’s offshore charter during the peak season from November to April. One of the large tournament boats released 80 Sailfish (yes 80!) in one hectic day during March 2016 – truly demonstrating the world class fishing that we have here. Blue, Black & Striped Marlin are all caught in Costa Rica making a Billfish ‘Grand Slam’ always a possibility when the Marlin are biting. The largest known Marlin caught on rod & line in Costa Rica was caught on 17 August 2008 aboard our boat, the ‘Good Day’ captained by Mr Manuel Gabuardi, who is still my captain to this day, having been on the boat for 12 years now. The fish, a Black Marlin measured 17 feet long and weighed a staggering 1,245lb! Costa Rica is not famous for grander Marlin but when the fish are here we get an exceptional amount of 200-300 pounders with plenty of 500+ pound fish caught every year too. The Yellow Fin Tuna fishing in Costa Rica is an exhilarating experience. The fish are commonly found together with huge schools of 500+ Spinner Dolphins in a feeding frenzy as they attack the Sardine bait balls, together with hundreds of birds diving and the Tuna busting the surface from below. This action needs to be seen to be believed! There are lots of Yellow Fins in the 20-50lb range with plenty of fish over 100lb and specimens of 300lb caught every year too. El Nino has disrupted this year’s Mahi Mahi run up the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica where the fish are usually found in abundance at this time of year. Northern Mexico & Southern California are having one of their best Mahi seasons ever with the fish preferring the cooler waters which helps explain why there are not so many Mahi in Costa Rica this year. We are hopeful they will return in numbers when the rains come later in the season and the water temperature cools. One of the best times to catch Mahi here is in the height of the rainy season when the rivers are in flood washing branches and debris out to sea to form trash lines which the Mahi love to congregate under, providing excellent sport sight fishing on light tackle. Inshore Fishing The main event in Costa Rica for many Anglers is the prized Roosterfish. With the IGFA World Record standing at 114lbs and with 100 pounders caught every year in Costa Rica, the Roosterfish is what many Anglers flock to Costa Rica in search of. Roosterfish are typically caught in 20-80 feet of water alongside cliffs, rocky outcrops, surf lines or attacking shoals of sardines. The preferred fishing method is live bait for the larger fish and typical baits used are sardines, lookdowns, blue runners or a live bonito for the really big fish! Casting lures, poppers or fly fishing are very successful too & provide some very exciting visual fishing! Our Rooster fishing in March & April 2016 has been fantastic. In one charter off Dominical we landed 4 lovely Roosterfish with 3 of them in the 20-28lb range. We then had a really special day in early April 2016 during a half day charter fishing close to the islands of Naranjo & Manuel Antonio. We were fishing a Blue Runner livebait about 10 feet under the surface when a huge Roosterfish broke the surface behind the boat as he chased down our live bait. Several long seconds passed before the fish picked up our livebait before we fed him ample line for the bait to be taken down and we could set the circle hook. Upon setting the hook, the fish exploded into life and on fairly light tackle for such a big fish a tug of war ensued before us as the Angler Jim Hill, owner of Epic Boats in the USA did an excellent job of fighting the fish. Perhaps 10 times during the fight, Jim coaxed the fish closer to the boat only for it to empty another 100 yards of line without Jim being able to stop it. As we finally got the fish to the boat, it was a really special moment to experience, knowing your client was going home with the memory of catching & releasing a Roosterfish of a lifetime. The fish measured 55 inches from nose to tail and we estimated it at 70lbs. It was for moments like this that I moved to Costa Rica! Beach & Rivermouth Fishing Snook, Snapper, Jacks and Roosterfish are the primary targets from the beaches & river mouths. Light tackle fishing for Snook can provide excellent sport with soft plastics, plugs & livebait all proving successful. Fly fishing in the mangroves and rivermouths is very successful and a large Snook caught on fly from the shore could easily turn into any Anglers most memorable fish of the trip!
Some favourite light tackle shore locations are, Playa Bejuco, Parrita, Naranjo, Savegre & Dominical. The IGFA World Record Pacific Black Snook was caught from the Naranjo Rivermouth, a whopping 59lbs 12oz! As part of my guiding service I am pleased to take anglers light tackle fishing from the shore when we are not out fishing on the boat. Sunrise and sunset are an incredible time to be on the beach here in Costa Rica - jaw dropping sunsets are common! Activities for non fishing days Costa Rica has so much to offer and I would highly recommend that you take some time to explore the beauty of the country. We have no fewer than 14 Volcanos throughout the central highlands and there are some great hiking trips so that you can get out in the wild and take a closer look. You can visit National Parks, or go wildlife viewing, White water rafting, try an ATV tour, go horse riding, or on a Jet Ski tour, a Kayak Trip, try Zip Lining, a Crocodile Tour, or a majestic sunset Sailing cruise. The list of options for your non fishing days are simply endless…you might not want to go home, like me! Accommodation The Manuel Antonio area is one of the highlights to any visit to Costa Rica with a beautiful National Park with pristine beaches and excellent wildlife. There are a host of accommodation options including boutique hotels, private villas and guesthouses with a great restaurant and bar scene also making it the ideal place to spend your holiday. The typical wildlife in the area are Sloths, Toucans, Macaws, Racoons, Howler Monkeys, White faced Monkeys, Parrots, Snakes, Frogs and all kinds of creepy crawly’s….in the jungle you will be pleased to hear, not your hotel room! Travelling to Costa Rica It has never been easier to get to Costa Rica now that British Airways have started a direct flight from London Gatwick to San Jose, the Costa Rican capital which takes 10.5 hours with economy class fares starting from GBP590 return. Airport pickups can be arranged to transfer you to your chosen Hotel or Villa and to make your journey as smooth as possible. Peak seasons are November-April when fishing is excellent and there is little rain. May-Aug is low season where there are some fantastic deals on hotels and definitely worth considering. It typically rains for an hour or two in the afternoon every few days at this time of year. September & October is the height of the rainy season and typically very wet. The best Sailfish bite is January to April when the large numbers are here, however, they are caught in lower numbers during every month of the year. Our Roosterfish are resident along the coastline and are caught year round also. Further information To take the stress out of your trip planning we offer packages including airport transfers, accommodation and of course fishing. If you would like further information on these or any information about Costa Rica, it would be great to hear from you. Tight Lines! Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick
Chesil Beach has been very on and off the last month, the Plaice fishing on the western stretches is still yet to take off, prodomiently down to the water clarity, as fast as the water clears up the weather gods soon throw another southwesterly wind at us to colour it up again. There are still Plaice there to be caught and if you catch it right with clear seas the chances of plaice increase greatly, but it would help if the water cleared up for a couple of weeks to catch the better numbers. Worm baits are the way forward for the flatties with lug and rag working equally as well on there day, peeler is also always worth a go as it can some times pick out the bigger plaice. Chris Buxton had a recent evening session in search for the plaice and was lucky enough to be greeted with gin clear seas. He managed a very respectable 10 plaice and 8 dab along with hords of dog fish which have proved a problem for anglers for most of the last month with baits not staying in the water long enough for there required species. West Bexingtion to Hive have been the best areas to target the Plaice during day light. At this time of year the Spider Crab can be a pain at times, I personally haven't seen any as of yet, but i have heard reports of Anglers losing hooks and being stripped of bait with in 5minutes all day long, so it does seem they have started to show. One plus side to the Spider Crab showing is the packs of Smoothhound are never far behind. There have been a few Hounds about, but mainly small fish from 3-6 lb. Peeler Crab or Hermit are the best bait to target them but they will also take a good Rag or Squid bait. You have a chance of a couple of Hounds any where along Chesil but if you are out to target them the deeper water venues from Abbottsbury to the Turn Sanctuary at Ferry Bridge are your best
bet for the bigger fish, with three hours up and down in the dark (over high water] being the best times to target the species. The Ray fishing has been very fruitful this year along the whole of Chesil Beach with Ray being landed during the day and at night. You would usually associate Ray with night fishing along the South Coast but due to the water colour there has been some good numbers being caught during daylight aswell. Undulates, SmallEyed ray, Thornback Ray, Blonde ray and Spotted Ray have all been making an appearance with Sandeel and Peeler proving to be the top baits at present. Ryan Casey skipper of meer kat out of weymouth has been finding the ray most outings recently, with most of his fish coming from ferry bridge area of chesil. I always look forward to May as it can be a very productive month along Chesil as the water is getting warmer day by day and the summer species are slowly creeping in. As long as the water is clear the Mackerel shoals should appear more frequently. Gurnard and some better wrasse will start to show at the eastern end of Chesil during the daylight hours. worm or crab baits for the wrasse and small fish baits for the gurnard work best. Smoothhound numbers will improve and some better sized fish will also start showing at night, as for the ray we could be in for one of the best years we have had as the last month there has been some brilliant fishing for them and looks set to continue. The Plaice and Dab numbers will keep growing from Abbotsbury to Hive. good luck to you all and happy hunting.
