The Angling Trust, as the national representative body for all recreational fishing, has once again joined forces with the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) to fly the flag at this year’s party political conferences at a series of Rural Receptions. Delegates, MPs, ministers and shadow ministers at the recent LibDem, Labour and Conservative party conferences heard Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd and Head of Freshwater Mark Owen highlight a range of current issues affecting fish and fisheries on which anglers want to see political action. These included:

● The Save Our Salmon campaign - with stocks at an all-time low the Angling Trust wants to see ministers outlaw or buy out all mixed stock nets. ● Grave concerns about Severn Estuary tidal lagoons - the impacts are unknown, but could be very serious for salmon, sea trout, eels and marine fish. ● Agricultural pollution and soil management – this is now a bigger polluter than sewage and our recent Judicial Review with WWF is about the failure to tackle agricultural pollution in protected areas as required by the European Water Framework Directive. ● Concerns about fracking - with government U turns on restrictions agreed previously to keep it out of protected and water sensitive areas. ● Marine fish stocks in crisis - we have worked with government to get 30% reduction in commercial catches of bass, but the scientists recommend an 80% cut. More must be done to sort out the rules on inshore netting and give greater protection to estuaries. Guest speakers at the events included former Labour Shadow Fisheries Minister Angela Smith MP and the current Conservative Secretary of State for the Environment Liz Truss MP. Former MP Martin Salter, National Campaigns Coordinator with the Angling Trust, who attended the Conservative Conference said: “Our presence at the major party conferences each year is an important way of getting the message across to politicians and decision-makers that the angling community is united, well organised and will be championing the causes of clean water, improved habitat and better conservation policies irrespective of who is currently in power. The fact that the Environment Secretary agreed to be our guest speaker in Manchester shows that both shooting and angling are taken seriously at the top levels of government.”

Angler Richard Gage caught this cracking 10lb brill aboard Dartmouth charter boat Outlaw skippered by Owen Malia

Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal Mark Lloyd said: “With three million participants delivering four billion pounds in economic benefit and over 40,000 jobs, angling is clearly very important for the economy. It is also important for the well- being of millions of people, for their mental health, their connection with the natural world and for strong communities. Millions of anglers quite rightly want their elected representatives at all levels to protect their interests and the water environment upon which our sport depends.”

The pioneering tidal power developer Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Ltd (TLSB), with whom Fish Legal and south Wales member clubs have been arguing for over two years about the risks to migratory fish (particularly salmon and sea trout) from its proposed £1 billion Swansea Bay tidal lagoon, recently announced that construction will not now begin as planned in spring 2016, mainly because there has been a delay in securing the exceptionally high ‘strike price’ (£168/MWhr) it had requested from the Government. The fishing interests regard the delay as vital in order to do tagging and other studies to identify the precise movements of salmon and sea trout within the bay, information which should have been the basis of the company’s predictions of ‘encounter rates’ with, and thus mortality from, the lagoon’s 16 massive turbines. TLSB – without having done this research – had modelled the mortality as ‘negligible’.

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

No doubt many anglers are aware of our good early cod fishing bonanza and have now either been out on charter boats on the Essex coast or are in the process of getting booked up & you should not be disappointed, of course not every trip is going to be fantastic because that’s fishing but on the whole its pretty good. Some anglers expectations are hard to accomplish by any charter skipper that’s just how it is, and some anglers think they are better than they are but on the whole most of the anglers fishing from a full time professional charter boat are going home very happy. Cod are on every ones lips but we have other species also being caught in good numbers with thornback rays whiting and the odd bass to name a few so its defiantly a time to get out there for some good sport.

Don’t get disheartened if the weather forecast is threatening scuppering your trip especially if you have booked boats from Brightlingsea Bradwell or west Mersea because the Blackwater estuary is fishing very well also and of course allows us to take our anglers out despite strong winds to fish in the comfort of the Blackwater with some great fishing to be had, there is however a little bit of weed to contend with but this is getting less and less as the winter approaches and the summer growth is now getting washed out. Best baits as always squid lug cocktail and generally our tackle shop in Brightlingsea keeps a good stock of lug as does Brian Deans tackle in Clacton on sea he advertises in this paper so in summing up don’t dilly dally we are catching now so get that booking in.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT Standard kind of Autumn weather at the moment, some wind if not too much wind most days and now that it is in the north we are seeing the temperature start to drop. Maybe it is this shift in conditions that has kick started the winter fishing early, we had our first winter cod of the season in fresh water bay on 13th October, the earliest we have ever seen one up there. Along with the 4 cod we had spurdog, undulate rays and congers so the only thing missing so far is the whiting which will make an appearance when the temperature drops again into the single digits. Elsewhere, as far as the fishing goes, you would be forgiven for thinking it is still summer. On a wreck trip at the start of October to mainly target black bream at anchor we stumbled across a hit of late cod, averaging at about 8lb they were slightly bigger than what we have been

getting throughout the year. The bream certainly didn’t disappoint either with over a dozen fish coming to the boat at slack water, the biggest of which weighed in at 5lb 12oz for Scott Gooch just a few ounces short of our boat record. Inshore the fishing has been nonstop with plaice, brill and gurnards all in abundance on the sand which makes for great fun on the light gear. We have started doing a few trips in the evenings to target dover sole which have been a success, the elusive flatfish coming on the feed for just a couple of hours as the day slips into darkness. Looking forward to more of all of this over the next couple of weeks before we turn our attentions to the winter cod fishing. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE & SWANAGE / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 9

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Hello fellow anglers This is my 1st report and I would like to thank Steve Porter for all the effort and time he has donated to this report and for his efforts in raising the profile of Poole as a great place to fish from. I start with offering Hillary Caines our deepest sympathy for the loss of her husband and one of the charter industries greatest skippers Chris of the legendary Tiger Lily series of boats, a true friend and font of knowledge to angler and skipper. There are so many fond memories that I could enter in to but as Chris had the same effect on everyone you all will have memories similar to mine. The fishing from Poole has been very good in September, during the day the Harbour and along the beaches have produced good numbers of Plaice, Gurnards, Bream and the hard fighting Trigger fish with the best one at 4lb 9ozs along with plenty of small Cod as a bonus then as night falls Sole have been caught with the best falling to Sam Burrows 1lb14ozs. On the outer marks the Ray fishing has been very rewarding with several catches of 15+ Ray's being landed in a trip along with good size Bull Huss, Congers, Tope with the occasional Brill and Turbot. Bass fishing has seen some 10lb + fish being landed and returned, now it is the time of year when the bigger fish appear so I would expect a 15lb mark fish to be landed by a Poole boat. The introduction of the 42cm minimum landing size has been well received by the anglers. The offshore and wreck fishing is still producing cod and pollack but the main aim is the big red and black bream that inhabit the wrecks this time of year giving the anglers plenty of sport on the right gear and often a ling or conger will grab your bream bait putting you and your gear to the test. On Friday 25th September the 45th National Police

Angling Boat Championships were fished from Poole with 32 teams from around the country boarding 16 charter boats, as expected from the Police the comp was well organised by Vernon Allen and his team. The weather for the day was calm seas and sunshine, each skipper set of with the aim to catch 4 fish of each species with the best points coming to the 4th fish, fishing times were 6hrs from 1st lines down allowing boats to travel without loosing fishing time if the skipper choose to do so, some boats started within the harbour whilst others used the time to travel further afield. The anglers aboard the Mistress Linda were instructed on the game plan we would be fishing too which initially raised a few eyebrows but as the points amassed the plan proved to be working, Tim Ashman and Mick Dodd went head to head all day with each angler taking the lead on the boat. 6 hrs soon passed and the scoresheets were handed to the organiser for verification. The anglers were then treated to a sumptuous meal at the RNLI headquarters fit for hungry anglers, after the meal the results were read out and the overall winner was Tim Ashman with Mick Dodd as runner up with Vernon Allen coming in 3rd who also registered the most species 12 in all. Top boat honours went to Mistress Linda with Piscary as runner up and Danny Boy in 3rd. A raffle was held and all proceeds were donated to the RNLI. As the summer leaves us and winter approaches we are turning our attentions to the Winter Cod season where fish to 30lb can be expected and Channel Whiting, Poole Harbour will start to produce good Flounders next month and we should enjoy a few Herring as well. The Poole Cod competition is on 22nd November, cash prizes and a good table are there for the anglers with the best fish.

Sea Angling News Gallery

A guide to taking better catch pictures By Dave Roberts of Alykat Charters & Images.

A selection of photographs sent in by our readers this month

A large part of the success of Sea Angling News is the photographic content within our pages. Pictures that tell the story of your recent angling adventures. We love to see images of your catches and judging by your feedback, you also enjoy seeing your pictures in print. Pictures taken on any device are acceptable from mobile phones and ipads to the more sophisticated cameras with interchangeable lenses. No matter what level of photographer you are it is still imperative to get the shot right. The better the image, the more chance you have of having it printed. The quality of image not only depends on its technical merits but also on composition, or what exactly is portrayed within it. Here are a few tips to help you when you catch that 'fish of a lifetime'

make sure you wash all sand / shingle from your fish before photographing it. Photograph your fish live as soon as possible after capture to avoid unnecessary stress, then release it immediately. If you want to keep your fish, photograph it then quickly despatch in a proper manner.

DO If you have a flash facility, use it! It will fill in shadows on bright sunny days. It will also get in under peak caps to brighten faces!

Take pictures of lots of dead fish, again, we will not publish!

Fill the frame properly. Include all of the fish and its captor.

Every month our readers send in pictures and we do our best to publish them but sometimes we just dont have the space. So from now on we will include a

Leave your fish for hours to dry out and look generally horrible, before you photograph it. Photograph fish covered in blood, we will not publish!!

Don't be afraid to experiment. Take a shot against the sun or in black and white to give your image a different look.

Make sure your fish is clean. If your fishing a beach,

DO NOT Cut off the anglers head (with the camera that is!) or tails of fish.

Whatever your level of competence with a camera, we will always take time to look at your pics and if you want any advice just ask! So keep on snapping and sending your best to us. Your picture may not make the front cover of a glossy magazine but you may well find it on the cover of SAN!

The SLO had it's ninth competition at Ferrybridge on Saturday the 12th of September 2015 from 2pm until 7pm. 17 anglers fished in 2 zones with 7 anglers weighing in. Second place was Ian Dancey from Waterlooville on peg B30 with 7lb 11oz consisting of 2 cod and a black Bream . Third place was Tony Methven from Aldershot on peg B29 with 2lb 13.5oz. RESULTS OF LARGE BOAT COMPETITION 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 ‘The Nelson Touch!’ Eight Lymington & District Sea Fishing club members and two guests took advantage of a beautiful early autumn weather window to head offshore aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage, to fish their October large boat competition. Whilst mackerel were scarce for some anglers, other species were more obliging, including tope, bull huss, blonde ray, smalleyed ray, spotted ray, conger, scad, weever, pout, dogfish and whiting. Best fish of the day was a 15lbs plus bull huss caught by Nelson Phillips. The fish was well over the specimen size and was not far off the club record. After being photographed it was returned to fight another day. When the tide picked up, a move inshore for the rest of the day proved particularly productive for whiting – a good omen for the season ahead.

Osprey Open Report

Sunday 11th October 2015, once again, as in all recent years, saw the weather gods in benevolent mood, the anglers turn up, though less than 2014, anything to do with World Cup? Also this year the fish turned up, at least Golden Greys and Flounders though not the dogs for once. For this was the day that the Osprey Sea Angling Club, based in Pembroke Dock, held its annual open beach fishing competition or flatfish festival to give it its other more descriptive name. Conditions did look good from the off with an easterly breeze and a nice surf running with coloured water on an overcast warmish day with the sun doing its level best to try and come out. We could not have asked for more, except for my camera to work. I thought I’d taken 2 or 3 pictures of some of the winners with my fairly new Windows Phone but when I came to transfer them to my laptop they weren’t there!! So I must apologise, especially to those who thought they would be in for a bit of fame, for there being no picture to accompany this report, Bill Gates, generous though he is, sometimes there is a lot for which he has to answer. 71 anglers, including 4 Ladies and 7 Juniors, locally and to way east of Cardiff and even east of the Severn Crossing, turned out to support the club for which the Osprey club members are very grateful and the organisers thank them one and all. 27 anglers, including 2 Ladies and 1 Junior, weighed in 24 Flounder, more than last year, 13 Golden Grey Mullet and 3 Lesser Spotted Dogfish, not the usual dog fest. Other fish were caught, both undersize and smaller but not weighed in, as the anglers either realised they were on the small side or, if their pair’s partner had not caught, then they were out in that category, as both anglers had to weigh in for their score to count. The winner, once again, was a local angler from Milford Haven, Robbie Scale, with 4 Flounder for 2 Kg 535gms. Second, from Bridgend, was Andy Bunston, a regular supporter of these opens, with a Golden Grey Mullet weighing 940gms, the heaviest fish of the day for which second prize was up for grabs. Third place was a Swansea angler with 2 Flounder for 1Kg 155gms. Top Lady was Sheila Mason, again from Milford with a Flounder of 320gms and top Junior was yet another local, this time a young lad from Tavernspite, Seth Rowlands with a Flounder for 495gms. One other Lady, Welsh International, Sally Owen weighed in, but no other junior managed to catch a fish in size. The pair’s competition was won by 2 locals Adam Roberts and Gareth Protheroe with a bag of 3Kg 30gms. In second, was the Swansea area pairing of Steve Tucker and Dom Lewis with a combined weight of 2Kg 640gms. The only other occurrence of note was the winner of the Stewards draw, which for the third time running, was Osprey Chairman Andrew Skeels. However, he very selflessly donated it to the match in aid of the Air Ambulance on 10th January, a date for your diaries, as is the date of the match, sponsored by Felinfoel Brewery, to support the RNLI, which will be on 7th February. Finally, thanks must go to Roger Harries of the Amroth Arms for, once again, accommodating us and also to our sponsors who donated cash and raffle prizes to further help support the club. These were, in no particular order, Shane Tucker, Steve Parry, Martin and Sandra Thompson of Anglers Corner in Milford Haven, Andy Luxford, John Loring, Leigh and Andrew Rogers, Andrew Skeels and Roger Harries.

ALDERNEY ANGLING REPORT by Mark Harding

Boat sport has been rather disappointing with Bass being the main culprits for their lack of attendance! No wonder there are measures in place to protect them. Luckily though there are still a few Turbot and Brill around but as its not the best time of year for them you can’t expect great results but there is enough to target. It’s the reefy and mixed ground I like fishing over and there has been reports of Tope, Conger, Undulate and Blonde Rays plus Black and Couches Bream and mix of other bits to keep the rod tips nodding. Shore sport it is a little better and rather than take up a whole whack of space I have copied our daily reports down from our annual Festival. Plenty of fish caught with lots of fish not reaching the qualifying weights but it seems there is some good fishing to be had around the island right now. Species caught and not reported also included quiet a few Plaice, lots of small Conger, Gurnards, lots of Red Mullet plus there will be others I forget. Alderney Angling Festival 2015 – 30th Anniversary A long standing event attended by 104 anglers from the UK and the other Channel Islands this year produced some excellent fishing. It was the best finishing board for several years but also a lot of fish around covering a massive variety of species that never made the board. Imagine Scott Audoires surprise that his 7lb 7oz pollack never had a sniff!! Below is a blow by blow account as to how the fishing unfolded, the highs and lows! Next years dates is Saturday 1st October till Saturday 8th October. Saturday 10th October - midday start and the lads and ladies are off!! First weigh-in is 6.30pm. We’ll keep you posted :-) Saturday 6.30pm weigh-in: Cracking start, a dozen or so Black Bream weighed in over the 2lb qualifying weight with the two best falling to Jamie Sugden and Steve Cosheril with fish of 2lb 15oz and 2lb 14oz respectively. Adam Salmon has the highest % fish so far with a Cuckoo Wrasse but man of the moment is Dicky Smith with 3 qualifiers in the session - a Thick Lipped of 4lb 3oz, a Garfish of 1lb 4oz and a Black Bream of 2lb 2oz. Also Jacob Maurice had the biggest fish - a nice Small Eyed of 9lb 5oz which was a surprise to me but fair play to the lad as it was fished for! Paid off handsomely! Other fish to make the board was a Mackerel for Kevin Frain, plus a Mullet for Mouse and Gary Maurice’s Gar. Its a good start, weather wise its a very stiff ENE wind at the moment. Who says fish bite least in the east! Sunday 7.30am weigh-in: Overnight saw a couple of nice Huss added to the board, an 8lb 11oz fish for Bill Scott and The Smiler added one of 8lb 10oz this morning. Several Small Eyeds have been weighed in to, in addition to Jacobs cracker yesterday Darren Braby has added one of 7lb, Marcus Odoli had one of 6lb 10oz and Adam Barnes had one of 6lb 3oz. gars have been added too, not sure who but Ross Johnson definitely has, so did Sam Robins. Its fun for sure! Monday 7.30am weigh-in: The last few weigh ins have seen a few fish added. Jacob added to his impressive Small Eyed with a 5lb 9oz Bass so he has two fish on the board and turns the heat up on Dicky. A couple of Golden Greys have been added with Stevie G getting the better one at 1lb 14oz. A couple of Mackerel have got on by the skin of their teeth plus a couple more Thick Lippeds caught by Brandon Williams and Andy Hedger. Last night saw Alistair House catch a cracking Small Eyed of 11lb 9oz and moves to the top of that category. Then this morning this was all topped off by a wonderful 11lb 8oz Bass caught by local lad JC - made all the better as he caught it the purist way - on a lure!! Plenty of fish being caught which is great, Gurnards, Sole and Plaice all reported but not big enough yet to get on the board! Great to see the Plaice around. weather conditions not great, warm but breezy ENE wind now swinging to more north. Back of the island beckons!! Tuesday 7.30am weigh-in: Small Eyeds dominating at the moment with 3 more added to the board over the last 24 hours, Steve Bunn weighed in a 7lb 13oz fish at tea time, Alistair House followed that with a corker of of 11lb 9oz and from the same group of lads Andy Hedger landed a cracker of 12lb 12oz which at 88% is the best fish of the Festival so far. Leigh Mullins added a Bream to the board with his fish of 2lb 12oz and Jacob Maurice got his second fish on the board with a 5lb 9oz Bass. Weather not too kind today, stiff NE wind - more strength in it than forecasted but back of the island will be lovely! Wednesday 7.30am weigh-in: Steve Greenaway has topped the board this morning with a quality Bull Huss of 12lb 4oz and at 89% of the Alderney record just pips Andy Hedger’s 12lb 12oz Small Eyed Ray at 88%. Other fish that made the board in the last 24 hours is Sam Robins 1lb 13oz Golden Grey Mullet, I was so pleased to see that make second spot! John Brie managed to add to the Black Bream section with a 2lb 13oz fish and lastly Gary Maurice got his 3rd fish on the board - a 7lb 11oz Small Eyed Ray which was returned alive. Plenty of fish being caught with a massive variety of species including Plaice, Sole and a nice smattering of Red Mullet. Lots of Huss too and small Eels. Thursday 7.30am weigh-in: Its the tipping point of the week, past the mid way stage and there is two types of frustrations. Frustration for those that have fished so hard and just can’t find that qualifying fish and frustration for those that are leading and want to add just one more than their closest competitor - its about the reward and the winning! Some cracking fish have come in to the scales over the last 24 hours. My favourite has to be Brian Williams 4lb 3oz Plaice. I’ve mentioned that there has been Plaice caught already but this is a proper job! Not to be outdone though Scott Audoire had a Sole drag his scales down to a whopping 3lb 7oz! In the same session he had a cracking Pollack of 7lb 7oz - Pollack are in the Over 5lb Category and not of a size to knock a Small Eyed off! Alistair House added a fine Huss of 8lb 5oz and Sammy Robins added to his tally too with a Thick Lipped Mullet of 4lb 1oz, plus Andy Hedger had a LSD of 1lb 15oz which makes him currently the top UK angler on 3 fish! Board is now shaping to be one of the best for a couple of years. Friday 7.30am weigh-in: We so nearly had an Alderney record broken in the last 24 hours, Jersey lad Danny Le Merrer caught a 1lb 15oz 8 dram Garfish which currently at 100% holds the fish of the festival title. Another fine fish came to the scales by way of a Ballan Wrasse for Guernsey boy Sam Robins. Sam commendably kept the fish alive in an aerated container until the fish was safely weighed and then released again. As you can see its a fine

ALDERNEY

looking fish. This is also Sams fourth fish and now puts him in the lead for the best CI angler. I am sure though that Stevie G, Dicky Smith and Gary Maurice will all be busting their bits off to change that! Two other fish of note to qualify, firstly Matt Smith got a 4lb 2oz Thick Lipped Mullet on the board - his first fish and Darren Braby got his second of the Festival with a 9lb 7oz Huss. Saturday 12.00pm Finale! - That’s it...........it is all over. How does it come round so quick? That was the 30th Alderney Angling Festival and lets hope there is another 30 of which I am sure there will be with the support this event gets. More fish hit the board, if anything it was the busiest end to any Festival I have known. Two 10lb+ Undulates got on the board, one for Pete Walker and the other for a sleep walking Dan Ferguson. Leigh Mullins had a fantastic finish with two fish, a 4lb 13oz Mullet and a 2lb 14dram Dogfish. Stevie G and Sam Robins both fighting it for the top CI rod and both weighed in Gars this morning - that is neck and neck! Last but not least Steve Bunn bought in a Red Mullet of 1lb 10oz too. The fishing has been good this year, already looking forward to next :-) I’ll do a results update tomorrow :-) Saturday Presentation Night: Great night last night finishing off a great week. Many thanks to the Alderney Angling Festival Committee for organising what was the 30th annual event, tremendous stuff. Thanks too to the sponsors but biggest thanks goes to those that attend and make this event so much fun to be part of. If you never attended this year then get yourself sorted for next, dates are Saturday 1st to Saturday 8th of October!! Alderney Angling Festival 2015 Results Bull Huss & L.S.D 5. Alderney Angling Shore League 2015 Two matches to report on in this reporting period, a pegged match on the Breakwater whereby you could fish inside or outside and a 24 Heaviest Bag match restricted by nominated species, minimum sizes and bag limits subject to that species. Pegged Match (Breakwater) We’ve certainly got lucky with the weather of late as we were able to fish this event on the first attempt. Firstly much thanks to those that had pots situated on the inside of the Breakwater for moving them so this could go ahead, much appreciated. Fished in a breezy easterly wind 16 anglers drew pegs and crossed fingers for a favoured draw. In all truthfulness at any time all parts do fish on the inside or outside and it was about making the most of what was in front of you. Great to see such a mix of fish including Black Bream, Couches Bream, Red Mullet, Cuckoo Wrasse amongst the usual Pollack, Ballans, Corkwing and Pout. Must be noted nothing too big came out which was the surprise but good fun nonetheless. Scott took full advantage of his peg and amassed a mammoth 8m+ of fish to win

the match; Dicky showed what a good angler he is by adapting in the last hour with his techniques at the right time and clinched a second spot pushing Alistair who worked so hard for his 6m of fish in to 3rd. It must be noted that this was also the match of the trolleys!! Match results: 1. Scott Audoire - 801cm 2.

Heaviest Bag 24 Hours Ok…………………..so the question is – “How on earth do you get the top four anglers in a 24 hour comp split by just one fish?” An absolutely amazing weigh in full of tension as fish came to the scales. On top of that the 14 anglers were blessed with fine weather for the duration with sunshine and little if any wind. What a cracking weekend! The match was governed by a few simple rules, only certain species counted, fish like Wrasse, Tope etc were banned and the species that did count were given bag limits and minimum sizes depending on the ‘quality’ of the specie. This gives each angler the challenge of seeking out their next quarry so having to use different venues and tactics. Bag weights were made up of Black Bream, Thick Lipped Mullet, Pout, Pollack, Garfish, Dogfish, Rockling, Bass, Scad, Golden Grey Mullet, Red Gurnard and Couches Bream. Match winner was Mark Harding, well kind of, he was more than helped out by others as he was constantly put on the fish and if Ross had landed his Undulate Ray then Ross would have ‘skated’ his way to victory. However with more than a little help Mark somehow manage to secure victory. Firstly James showed him how to catch Pollack in the dark, Gary as good as emptied his lure box for him………………..so did James too! Then after a good nights sleep which most others craved for he stumbled on some Bream but again not on his own. This time Darren and Scott found the Bream, Dicky joined in too and using their baits and Dickys tackle victory was secured haha! Lazy oik! Scott had the heaviest fish of the match, a Bass that was nigh on 5lb. Scott got close with an Eel too but it was a match for targeting the smaller fish………………good craic, well done to all who took part. Match results: 1. Mark Harding – 27lb 6oz 2.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, November 2015

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT by James Wigglesworth

Well by now I’m guessing you have all heard that there have been a few cod caught from various boats in the channel. Let’s be honest, as the days get shorter and the temperature starts to drop its all any of us are interested in. It’s true, there is the odd one being landed and some nice specimens too but give it a month or so and we will hopefully be seeing good numbers and if last year was anything to go by we could be in for a good one. From the West Somerset port of Watchet we have seen some nice fish with a few cod around the 7-8lb mark and the odd bonus double making an appearance. There seems to be a nice run of whiting at the moment too with some pan sized fish showing. There are still plenty of rays around with bullhuss and congers to keep those busy who don’t want to sit there with big worm baits on all day. The Minehead skippers will slowly start to venture up to the grounds off of Dunster and Blue Anchor as the month progresses in search of our winter quarry. That being said this last month has seen some great fishing down in the Porlock bay area and

marks to the west. There seems to be a good number of smooth hounds around still but no doubt we will be seeing the last of them for this year in the coming weeks. There’s still plenty of nice bullhuss around with many double figure fish still coming to the net. The ray fishing is always an option as these species seem to be abundant for most of the year. Down in Ilfracombe there seems to be a few bass around on the reefs. There has been a lovely stamp of fish this year with a lot being in the 4-6lb bracket which is good to see. As the water temperature starts to drop I’m sure they will move off which will in turn see the charter boats focus their attentions more on the deep water marks in search of the first run of spurdogs. Don’t forget the Minehead cod competition coming up in December. If you’ve not fished it before get your name down as it’s a great, friendly day out with the chance of a prize or two at the end of it. See Craig at Minehead harbour to book yourself in. Good luck if you’re getting afloat this coming month. May the cod be with you!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Doesn't time fly when there's a few fish about and you go hear there and everywhere trying to find them. The past month has seen some half decent catches from most parts of the channels beaches. Even two weeks of the winds coming from an easterly quarter has not stopped the fish feeding in many parts. It has to be said that some beaches have been hard work at times, but that's got to be expected considering the conditions at times. Multiple ray catches have been experienced as well as a really good stamp of cod. I say cod loosely as they are in the 4-6lb bracket. Personal if the species hits around the 5lb mark I feel it's a cod opposed to a codling. Talking of codling the year classes of fish up to a couple of lb’s are thin on the ground this year and almost void in many areas but we can't have it all the time. But as mentioned last month it quality not quantity this year and there will be some superb coding to be had when the secondary wave of fish turn up later this coming month to add to the modest head we are experiencing at present. With the better stamp of cod about this year it's not so common to find them running and feeding hard on the shallower beaches where we are use to seeing the normal head of 1-3lbers. Look for those deeper marks up and down the channel over high or low water and there's half a chance of bagging some tidy fish. Those infamous marks like Battery point, sand point, Brean down, the reefs between Hinkley and Watchet along with both Watchet and Minehead harbours and White mark are all top contenders for winter hot spots. To be honest there's loads more beaches and marks between Severn beach and Porlock weir with potential it would be wrong to discount any of them. Personally speaking I feel it's wiser to concentrate efforts on just a couple of marks and fish them regularly rather than chasing the fish that were caught yesterday.

There has been some bumper Thornback Ray catches this past month. These fish were caught on a short night session by Simon Langley from a low water reef Mark. Please note all the Rays were kept in a large rock pool and released happily back after a quick photo.

Reports of bass being caught have slowed up the past month, with just a hand full of fish to 8lb reported from the Dunster area and the reef marks around Hinkley point. It's hopeful the month ahead will produce some decent whiting sport it's been a few years since we saw 1-2lb whiting in any numbers, but the signs are positive for this winter. Earlier this month Weston super mare SAC held their annual junior open competition on the town beach. This in my eyes, has to be one of the most important sea angling events of the year along the channel. Promoting , encouraging and making sea angling accessible to juniors is highly important for the future of our sport not to mention the wider community. This year 31 keen juniors aged from 3 years old to 15 years old signed in to try to win the top prize of a mountain bike and the many other great prizes. Twenty two juniors registered fish with first place going to Cally Rose-Bullock with 11 bass a flounder and a whiting for over 200cm. 2nd place was Ryan Frewin with 10 bass and a whiting and 3rd place going to Marli Garrard with 5 bass a whiting and a flounder. It was great to take my two boys along again this year and they are already looking forward to set year and expect many of the other juniors will be too. It's a fantastic effort by the club to run this annual competition and great to see many parents encourage there children to participate in the event and with every junior receiving a nice prize at the end of the day they all went home happy and enjoyed the experience. Well done Weston super mare sea angling club. On that positive note I will sign off for this month and wish all those visiting/fishing the channel this coming month the best of luck. Tight lines & happy hunting…

LAST LAUGH CHARTERS By John Skeggs I can't remember seeing so many Cod caught, so early in the season. These are not big fish, probably averaging around 4 -6 lb, but are of real quality. Those boats that have managed to get afloat are reporting an average of 4 – 8 Cod per a session. Along with the Cod are plenty of Whiting, although a bit small, there are some keepers amongst them. The bigger ones should turn up in the next few weeks. There were plenty of Bass about last month, the majority being caught on lures.

The biggest I heard of was a cracking 15lb fish caught aboard “Reel Easy” at anchor. Hopefully these shoals will hang around for a month or so. All we need now is some settled weather and we could be in for a bumper winter. Tight Lines John Skeggs.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This month has seen the arrival of Cod throughout the West Wight area, from East Brambles to West Lepe, in the Solent and Christchurch Bay to Freshwater south of the Needles. The Solent marks have been producing good numbers of Cod, with one boat reporting ten over one tide; however, they are smaller fish than those being reported South of the Needles, with an average size of 6-7lbs; these fish are taking a variety of baits, from Squid, Wragg-worm, Lug and Crab, with other species such as Thornback Ray, Smooth Hound and Channel Whiting coming to the net.

South of the Needles the fishing has also been very productive, with Cod up to 14lb being boated. Most of the charter boats have reported good catches of Cod over the past weeks, which must make it one of our best and earliest starts to the Cod season for a few years. Other fish in our area, which are making a show, are Channel Whiting, which are also early. These fish are not the biggest (around 2lb) but there does seem to be plenty of them so I’m hoping they will also stick around. If you want to try something different the Banks

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, November 2015

Port Report It's mid October as this report is being written and it is cold. It's been cold all month so far with an unwelcome north east or easterly wind to drive the fish to whatever location they disappear when such a wind blows. We are told that 'when the wind is in the east the fish bite least' and the challenge was to see if this was an epithet set in stone or if it could be dismantled. The trips to Alderney in the first half of the month were either cancelled due to the excessive strength of the wind or resulted in astonished greetings from the local Alderney denizens who are clearly firm believers in the infamous east wind maxim. And, true enough, the bass had disappeared, the flatfish were non-existent, the bream were more than difficult to tempt and the pollack were a struggle. There were no sandeels to catch and Gannet rock was totally devoid of any gannets that had clearly decided to leave early. And the messages crossing the Channel from the Weymouth skippers to those of us being now firmly convinced of our foolhardiness in tempting to test the east wind maxim in Alderney assured us that the sea everywhere was totally lacking in any kind of fish life. So, with heavy heart and very light fish boxes we returned to Weymouth against an uncomfortable head wind of the sort that Catamarans detest and which make anglers grizzle with pain. The final slow journey back was to be punctuated with a brief stop on a wreck in the hope of a lost pollack or two. But this was not to be either. As unexpected as angling can so often be, the wreck was full of decent sized cod and double figure pollack and soon spirits were soaring and the painful return journey was suddenly all worthwhile. The return to Weymouth was met with gloom and doom from some sources whilst other skippers had a different tale to tell and reported reasonable catches of bream and bass despite the north easterly curse. And so, on the weekend of the 17th/18th the rearranged EFSA bream festival turned out to be a great success with plenty of fish caught on the competing boats whilst those not taking part and were thus able to roam with ruleless abandon discovered some very good bass into double figures in the Race along with a few sizeable turbot and brill on The Shambles as well as catching a few bream of their own. The early monthly reports of thornback rays, conger, huss, pollack and a cod or two as well good catches of bream from reefs to the east of Weymouth now seemed believable and as the photographic evidence appeared it did indeed seem that some Weymouth

skippers had successfully disproved the myth. Whilst we are all aware that the mussel beds in the west Shambles area have gone and with them all hope of plaice this year, there have been a few plaice to 4lb 8oz caught from marks very close in to the shore on the west side of Portland along with gurnard, cod and the first whiting.

Further west in the region of Abbotsbury there are further welcome signs of whiting and cod which, with the excellent cod catches being made from Chesil Beach, really does give hope for a productive November. For the past few years, November has been an excellent month for bass but these have tended to be small fish with many under the new size limit for bass. And, when mentioning the recently introduced 42cm minimum bass size which anglers have fished to for at leat 30 years, the three fish bass limit has had a dramatic effect in that reaching that personal allowance has proved all but impossible. It will be interesting to see if this allowances are actually reached in November or indeed ever again. Pollack fishing on the wrecks has traditionally been regarded as at its best in the later months of the year and after the unexpected success with this species in October it may be that wrecking may continue to provide good fishing as it has done throughout this year.

Blonde rays are not a popular species to fish for but November to February can often produce the bigger fish. The Kidney Bank, the most consistent blonde ray mark, can also be good for cod and bass taking the pennel rigged kalamari baits intended for the rays. And November is well known for squid catches. English squid, often in the 2lb to 4lb range fight extremely well and can provide great sport on light spinning rods matched with fixed spool reels. The fixed spool reels are better at handling and casting the light squid jigs so if your skipper has suggested included a bit of squidding as the conclusion of your day then it is worth including this sort of tackle. And these squid make the best eating ever.....

We look forward to welcoming you all to Weymouth for November's fishing featuring its inshore bassing, whiting and cod along with various rays and the offshore wrecking for pollack. Good Luck and Thank you all for supporting the Weymouth Fleet.

IN MEMORY OF CHRIS CAINES SKIPPER OF TIGER LILY

skipper

Angling Charter skippers enter into the lives of thousands of people during their careers and provide memories that can last a lifetime. A first fish, a personal best, a new species, an outstanding catch, a perfect or even a rough day can all be remembered by an angler who can often then recall the the experience took place.

Skippers can also make a marked impression upon their customers by their characters. Maybe it is the skipper’s sense of humour and his ability to spin a seafaring yarn, maybe it is his apparent wisdom and ability to offer advice on a whole range of topics, perhaps it is his ability to make a customer feel ‘special’ or maybe it is because he is simply such a friendly and genuine person that the fishing becomes secondary to spending the day on a great boat with an outstanding person as company. It is rare than any one person can combine all these qualities but Chris Caines, skipper of Weymouth based angling charter boat Tiger Lily, did and did so in abundance. On Thursday October 8th over 600 people were in Weymouth’s Holy Trinity Church attending the Thanksgiving Service In memory of Chris Caines’ life. In addition to all these people attending the Service, the Church was decorated with hundreds of messages sent in from all over the UK and Europe along with Australia, America, South Africa, and Thailand such was the effect felt by the loss of Chris.

WEYMOUTH

These qualities made Chris Caines someone people wanted to spend time with. A day afloat with Chris, often followed by a drink or two after the trip, made the visit to Weymouth an enriching experience. On the Channel Island trips, dinner in one of the Island restaurants was more than just a meal. It was a time when anglers and friends could have the pleasure of listening to Chris’ stories, his wonderful descriptions of places he had visited (and he had been to many!) and of the people he had met. His amazing sense of humour that could have everyone doubled up with laughter and his warmth and friendship marked Chris out to be a very special man indeed. Apart from the actual going to sea side of his life, Chris was one of those rare people prepared to spend hours representing the interests of his fellow skippers at PBA meetings, the local Weymouth Harbour Users Committee and the local Licensed Skippers Association as well as being involved in a whole range of time demanding situations which required his expertise and natural diplomacy. He had the ability to fully comprehend the complexity of many of the legalities and problems that concerned the marine world and was able to explain such issues in such a way that made them understandable to the rest of us. Chris represented and fought for his fellow skippers and would not back down when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles that unfairly threatened livelihoods and careers.

He was described in many of the messages sent in via the various social media as a ‘rock’, a ‘hero’, someone who one could ‘turn to and always receive sound, well considered and informed advice’. He was a man who people looked up to, were inspired by and aspired to be like. He was described many times by many people as being a man whom it had been an honour and a privilege to have known.

Chris Caines died on Tuesday September 22nd at 6am from a heart attack. He was in Dorchester Hospital having suffered a heart attack and stroke a couple of weeks earlier but it seemed as though he was making good progress and his friends were able to visit him and spend time chatting and having a laugh together. It came as a terrible shock when the news came through to us all with most of the Weymouth skippers on their way out to sea when the dreaded phone call came.

Chris was part of a wide circle of friends in Weymouth plus a small group of very good friends that enjoyed special occasions such as birthdays and holidays together. Chris was always the centre of everything. He did not try nor want to be that centre and would often have to be coaxed to share his wealth of knowledge and perceptively amusing observations on life with the rest of us. We always felt fortunate when we managed to get him talking as no-one quite had the ability to entrance the listener as Chris did.

The Thanksgiving Service was indeed a remarkable outpouring of sadness and fond memories expressed towards a truly remarkable and outstanding man. There will be many people reading this who will have the most vivid memories of Chris. It is universally acknowledged that he was a brilliant skipper in terms of his seamanship and outstanding ability at finding fish but far more importantly, and more rarely, he is remembered as someone who made days at sea something special.

To say he will be massively missed is a gross understatement. It would be very hard to find someone who had made such an impact upon so many of us. We know that people live on for a time in others’ memories but Chris will live on with a degree of clarity, colour and vivacity throughout the lives of those he leaves behind. There will be countless stories retold, memories shared, expressions he enjoyed using fondly repeated throughout the Brotherhood of our sea angling world.

Anglers know that as soon as they stepped aboard Tiger Lily they were in for a treat. The initial warm welcome with a hearty handshake and that rare ability to know everyone by name; the genuine interest and concern about a person’s wellbeing and how their work or life was going and the sincerity in making each person think that they were the most important person on the boat.

Quite simply, Chris will live on in all who knew him. We are all, in Chris words ‘’just crumbs in the biscuit barrel of life’’. But what a life he shared with us and what an Honour and Privilege it has been for those of us fortunate enough to have known him.

Chris Caines was a talented photographer. He graced the pages of many magazines with his angling photographs but his own collection contained some gems like this black and white Anchor Graveyard composition....brilliant!

Chris had retirement all sorted out. Along with his wife Hilary and dog Chesil, Chris had purchased this motorhome and had already made several lengthy journeys through Europe, meeting up with the many friends he had made through a 30 years of charter angling and delighting us all with his informative and humorous postings on his Motorhome Mumblings Facebook page.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick

The last month Chesil has been brilliant for some and not so good for others. There has been loads of cod appearing along the whole stretch so I think we can say the cod fishing has well and truly kicked off! For the best of it you want to try anywhere between Abbotsbury and check point area of Ferrybridge. There have been reports of up to 15 cod in a single session from these areas. This year the fish seem a very good average size with most fish weighing in the region of 4lb-6lb and a very good chance of a low double, which is awesome for the beach at this time of year. Shaun Nutley had a session to remember on a fairly remote part of Chesil, with 3 lovely cod a 4lb, 6lb and 13lb 5oz Chesil lump. His bait was fresh blacks on a fixed paternoster rig with 3/0 hooks fished at range. Distance does seem to be the key to catching numbers of cod along Chesil at the moment. The only problem anglers are having in their hunt for cod is being on the beach at the same time that the cod are feeding. One tide they are there in numbers nearly a fish a chuck then the next tide they are nowhere to be seen. Over low on a middle tide seems to be the best time to target them, in day light worm or peeler crab is the bait but at night I personally stick to peeler

as the sheer number of pout and whiting along the beach at the moment can be a problem on the worm baits. Ferrybridge is still producing the odd decent undulate ray mainly at night on fish baits, high water in the dark will still throw up some monster conger eels. During the day there are still a few black bream about although they are mostly smaller fish and will fizzle out completely within the next month. Also still a very good chance of a trigger off the landing craft or Adelaide with a few good plaice thrown in for good measure. Ferrybridge isn’t really known for its plaice fishing but every year at this time it throws up some good fish from 2-3lb. Abbotsbury and West Bexington have still been producing good numbers of fish and some tidy weights. Dave lovelock had a cracking plaice at Abbotsbury weighing 4lb6oz which is a lovely fish by anyone’s standards. As we move through November the summer species will fizzle out completely and by the end of the month we should see some bigger cod and tidy whiting make a more frequent appearance along the whole coast line. The squid and cuttles should also be right upon us which can also give some great sport and makes brilliant fresh bait.
