www.snowbee.co.uk RECREATIONAL ANGLING TRADE STRUGGLES TO MAKE ENDS MEET AS BASS RESTRICTIONS BITE Angling charter boat skippers in England have seen revenues slashed by more than one-fifth as a result of tough restrictions on recreational bass fishing introduced this year. Anglers have been reluctant to spend up to £600 a day on bass charter fishing trips only to be allowed to take one fish home to eat. As a result, coastal communities are losing several million pounds in valuable tourism revenue as anglers stay away. The findings are the result of three separate surveys carried out among charter boat skippers, bass guides and sea anglers to determine the true socio-economic impacts of “conservation” measures for recreational bass angling introduced last January. These included a six month notake period for anglers from January to June, followed by a one fish per day bag limit from July to December, which many felt disproportionately impacted the recreational sea angling (RSA) community. A survey carried out by the Professional Boatman’s Association (PBA) showed that an estimated £2.87 million is projected to be lost by charter boat businesses, which take anglers to sea to fish recreationally for bass and other species. The losses amount to more than 50 per cent of the total value of commercial bass landings in the UK, with individual charter skippers reporting an average of 22 fewer bookings and losing more than £8,000 in revenues. A survey carried out by the Angling Trust of bass angling guides, who offer a tailored service for small groups of anglers from the shore or from small boats, also reported 30 – 70 per cent fewer bookings in May and June this year compared to 2015. This reduction in bass angling activity was supported by the results of an online survey of sea anglers run through the University of Southampton, with many confirming that, as a result of the restrictions, they now had a reduced inclination to go bass fishing. Fewer bass fishing trips will also have had a knockon effect on coastal tackle shops, accommodation, restaurants, pubs, petrol stations and other businesses, and this is particularly damaging in deprived coastal towns. A further estimated £3 million is estimated to be lost in revenues to coastal businesses this year as a result. Ian Noble, Chairman of the PBA, recently presented the findings of the socio-economic surveys to members of the European Parliament at a bass forum event in Brussels organised by the European Angler’s Alliance. This event brought together key stakeholder groups to discuss the potential management measures for bass stocks in 2017, with angling groups eager to emphasise that further restrictions to recreational anglers would be unacceptable and highly damaging.
WINNER North Cornwall Lifeguard 26 year old Joe Todd used his local knowledge of the area to fish an obscure low water rock mark. Knowing that the weather and sea state was safe to venture out to fish this particular mark he dressed in his wetsuit, a valuable piece of equipment which has become the norm around here for fishing these wet rough marks and he was rewarded with his PB Bass weighing in at 14lb 14oz. Joe was fishing over rough ground in about a metre of water or less using a 9 ft Garbolino spinning rod CW 15 to 40gms paired up with an Abu Soron 40
reel loaded with 30lb braid and a 30lb flouro carbon leader. Joe explained that because of the terrain here they tend to fish heavier than normal. Joe was using a 12 cm hard plastic lure ( the actual make and model he is keeping to himself) Joe's lure was about 10m out when the big Bass took. Said Joe,' As soon as the fish took it thrashed its tail on top of the water. After an awesome fight I was eventually able to land the fish by lifting it in the swell and letting the sea drop it at my feet. I immediately jumped on it to secure it' Joe then added, ' I fish for sport and I do keep the occasional bass for the table. I tried my best for
several minutes to get the treble hooks out of the fish but it had completely engulfed the 12 cm lure and was damaged. I had no choice but to sadly dispatch it.' Joe then told me that he intends to try single hooks on his lure in order to minimalise injury to any future Bass. This can only be a good thing! Joe's previous PB was 7 1/2 lb. There have been a few good Bass taken in North Cornwall in the last 3 or 4 weeks including another lure caught fish of 13lb 2oz.
Ian Noble said: “The bass restrictions are causing severe financial problems for the charter boat industry and supporting service groups whilst netting of bass is rewarded with an increased quota. The unfairness is staggering.” Charter skipper Paul Whittall from Weymouth in Dorset said: “So far I’ve had 36 bass fishing trips cancelled as a direct result of the measures placed on anglers. That’s over £21,000 in loss of income. I wonder whether those politicians who decided on the measures would be happy having their income cut like this too.” David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “Recreational anglers and the businesses that supply them with goods and services have taken a disproportionately severe hit from this year’s bass conservation measures. Angling has a relatively small impact on bass but pumps millions of pounds into coastal communities. The current system sees bass stocks still in decline due to commercial fishing while angling dependent businesses suffer too – it’s madness.”

WASHING CLOTHES RELEASES THOUSANDS OF MICROPLASTIC PARTICLES INTO ENVIRONMENT STUDY SHOWS. More than 700,000 microscopic fibres could be released into waste water during each use of a domestic washing machine, with many of them likely to pass through sewage treatment and into the environment, according to new research. A study by Plymouth University examined the mass, abundance and size of fibres present in waste effluent following washes of synthetic fabrics at standard temperatures of 30˚C and 40˚C. It found hundreds of thousands of tiny synthetic particles could be released in each wash, confirming earlier work at Plymouth University that the washing of clothes is a major source of microscopic fibres within the aquatic environment. The research, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, was led by PhD student Imogen Napper in conjunction with Professor Richard Thompson, who is a leading international expert on microplastics and marine debris having worked in the field for more than 20 years. In the paper, the authors say: “The quantity of microplastic
For the study, a series of polyester, acrylic and polyestercotton items were washed at 30˚C and 40˚C using various combinations of detergent and fabric conditioner. Fibres were then extracted from the waste effluent and examined using an electron microscope to determine the typical size and any differences in mass and abundance among treatments. The research found that laundering an average washing load of 6kg could release an estimated 137,951 fibres from polyester-cotton blend fabric, 496,030 fibres from polyester and 728,789 from acrylic. The polyester-cotton blend was
but probably not too much. Total fish recorded by each angler over the 3 practice days were: Cliff 24, Colin 27, Gary 17, Mark 26, Rolf 33, Matt 26. On returning to the quayside on the first day it was evident that on most boats fish had been on the ground in patches and that luck had paid a big part with low fish numbers. The team felt that the plan was still basically good and that they would stick with it and hope for more favorable positions. Results were as follows with 59 anglers taking part.

in the environment is expected to increase over the next few decades, and there are concerns about the potential for it to have harmful effects if ingested. But while the release of tiny fibres as a result of washing textiles has been widely suggested as a potential source, there has been little quantitative research on its relevant importance, or on the factors that might influence such discharges. That was the focus of our research.”

Tubertini Team England World Boat Squad struggled for a medal finish this year in the 52nd FIPS-M World Boat Angling Championships in Tivat, Montenegro from 24th September – 1st October 2016 finishing in a disappointing 10th place. The team agreed an optional practice trip to the venue 4 weeks prior to the event in August with the team identifying the target species, preferred baits and basic rig. The team then set about building the 5 agreed rigs to target Pandora bream and possibly Bogue. The team also built a casting rig, a weed bottom rig and a lighter scratching rig. Team members were each expected and agreed collectively to build in excess of 100 rigs each. Moral was high for the team when they arrived and they were confident of success. Over the course of the 2 practice days on the Thursday and Friday prior to the event Team England formulated a plan after testing as rigorously as possible given the low numbers of fish. Practice seemed to go well and they identified that the best bait was mussel, optimum spacing 60cm and that casting would be important
Mark 23rd (9 fish), Colin 40th(4), Rolf 41st(9), Gary 52nd(4), Cliff 53rd(3). After a lengthy team meeting Team England agreed to change tactics slightly by all changing to braid and casting more, where appropriate, and to come up with any further improvements as their rigs and baits seemed identical to others. Tubertini Team England finished in 10th position out of 12. The team agreed that they should be in a higher position than this and resolved to improve on the second day. The same team fished on the second day and gained an even poorer result, finishing 11th well adrift of even 10th place over the 2 days. Cliff 36th (10), Colin 41st (32), Gary 44th (8), Rolf 45th (8), Mark 53rd(7). After two bad days the team decided to concentrate more on the preparation of mussels and to have the option to increase hook sizes from 10 to 8 and line diameters from .14 to .16 or .16 to .18 .
consistently found to shed fewer fibres than both the other fabric types, regardless of the differing treatments, however the addition of bio-detergents or conditioners tended to release more fibres. Professor Thompson, who leads the International Marine Litter Research Unit at Plymouth University, recently gave both written and oral evidence to the microplastics inquiry held by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee, which led to recommendations for a ban on the use of microbeads in cosmetics. He said: “Clearly, what we are not advocating that this research should trigger something similar to the recently announced ban on microbeads. In that case, one of the considerations guiding policy intervention was the lack of clear societal benefit from incorporating microplastic particles into the cosmetics, coupled with concerns about environmental impacts. The societal benefits of textiles are without question and so any voluntary or policy intervention should be directed toward reducing emissions either via changes in textile design or filtration of effluent, or both.” After much agonising and individual discussions with all team members the England Manager decided to replace Gary Galbraith with Matt Osborne to fish the 3rd day. Results on the 3rd day improved and the team finished 7th on the day and improved with their final placing to 10th finishing ahead of Portugal. Italy took the gold medal position with Croatia in 2nd place, and Slovenia finishing in 3rd place.

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS
THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
We are slowly getting our Autumn fishing going and after such a warm summer, in our area this has had a big effect on sea temperatures probably more so in our shallow water area than else ware in the country. As I write this report & after being out on charter for the last few days there has been a definite Autumn move with the first few cod being caught and some nice large whiting showing now in increasing numbers & I am confident that the next set of spring tides we will have a big increase in cod numbers. Still catching plenty of thornback rays in most areas but mostly the medium to small fish in fact Stewart Belbin on board his boat Razorbill had a great haul of rays a few days ago boating over sixty on several days
on the trot, I am not sure that our anglers really want to be catching rays and would rather avoid them and most of my regular anglers are of the same opinion they are just all rayed out and we make a conscious effort to target other fish species i.e. out yesterday 23rd October catching bass codling and whiting ok we did have a few unavoidable rays but we are trying to mix it up a bit buy keeping clear of the normal ray marks. We have a few dates left in our diary for the promised November cod fest so give us a ring on 07774492856 and grab a date before they are all gone that’s a cod promise.

FISHING THE ENGLISH CARIBBEAN By Peter Duckett
28 miles south west of Land’s End lie the stunning Isles of Scilly. An archipelago of 5 inhabited and many uninhabited islands, you can stand on pure white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters and think you’re in the Caribbean, and stand on rock marks and think you’re on the West Coast of Ireland. But this is England and one of the best kept secrets when it comes to sea fishing. You can literally have a whole island to yourself on a days’ fishing, and with the islands open to The Atlantic Ocean from every angle, whatever the weather there is always somewhere to fish. The 5 inhabited islands, St. Mary’s, Tresco, St. Martin’s, St. Agnes, and Bryher all have contrasting shorelines ranging from shallow bays to deep water rock marks that can plunge into the Atlantic up to 100 feet plus in places within casting distance from the shore. This gives many different angling opportunities for a number of species, but in my opinion it’s the Wrasse fishing that stands out. You could get preoccupied with just catching these fish as they are everywhere, and there are some monsters out there. If you could put the time in fish of 7, 8 and maybe even 9lb plus are possible. The varied shore marks also offer plenty of Pollack with fish up to double figures having been taken, Plaice and other flat fish are present in sandy areas although these are better targeted after dark, big Conger and Huss along with a few surprises come from the deep rock marks, or put a float out for Garfish and Mackerel. What you will also find is Mullet, and lots of them. Thick Lipped Greys can shoal in the hundreds in the shallow rocky bays as the tide floods, and Golden Greys patrol some of the sandy beaches. There are some monster Mullet around the islands and you can be fishing rock marks and out of nowhere big Mullet will cruise by. I had a huge fish come up and nudge my float on my last trip when I was Wrasse fishing. One species you won’t find in the Scilly’s though is Bass. The terrain is perfect for them but they just aren’t there. As mentioned Scilly could throw up some surprises if you could put the time in, and local anglers tell tales of being spooled from rock marks by fish that just hit and don’t stop running. They think these have been Sharks or Tope. There are a lot of Blue Sharks present off the islands in the summer months, and it has to be a prime place to try for the vacant British shore caught record from one of the deep rock marks off St. Mary’s, St. Agnes, or St. Martins. Get a slick going in the tide with a chum bag or two, feed out a fresh Mackerel under a float into the slick, and sit back and wait. Shore Fishing From the shore you’ll be fishing over jagged rocky areas and kelp for mainly Wrasse and Pollack and the best methods for the rock marks are a bait under a float or soft lures on Texas rigs. Sandeel type imitations work well for these fish, and a little trick is to chop the first couple of inches off one of these lures and use the remaining tail section. You get a lot of takes on a longish eel without hooking up, but shorten the lure and you’ll land more fish. I tend to stick to small soft lures and size 4 hooks, but will go down to a size 10. This gives you the chance to catch plenty of fish, and I’ve had 5lb+ Pollack on a size 10 hook and 2 inch lure. I never bother with anything other than a travel spinning rod and use a Shimano Exage 5 piece coupled with a Rovex 3000 or 4000 reel, but any decent set up will suffice. Be aware though that these Wrasse and Pollack are hard fighting and will hang on and dive into the kelp and rocks. Use a minimum of 12lb mono or 15lb braid with a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. You need to be able to bully these fish or you will lose them. You don’t need to cast to the horizon on these marks though as most of the fish are within 20 yards, and the biggest Wrasse I’ve caught, 5lb 4oz and 4lb 12oz, have both come less than 15 foot out. What you do need to do is stay mobile as you’ll want to try many marks, so a comfortable rucksack is best, and you are never more than a few minutes’ walk from the next mark. Any state of the tide can be fished and the Wrasse will oblige all day long, but the best time for Pollack is a couple of hours before high water and an hour back. You can pick up tide table from newsagents on St. Mary’s. A word of warning when fishing the rocks marks. It’s mainly granite on Scilly which is as slippery as ice when wet, and the Atlantic swell can be big at times. Just be sensible where and when you fish. You will need to take most of the tackle you’ll require with you as there are only a couple of shops on St. Mary’s that sell anything. You can get terminal tackle such as weights, hooks, line, floats, lures etc, but don’t expect a fully stocked tackle shop. When it comes to bait, one shop sells Ammo frozen mackerel, squid, and sometimes black lug, but don’t ignore what’s around you and free. You can catch Mackerel and even Sandeels with small sets of feathers, and if you look under the rocks on some beaches you can pick up plenty of small ragworm. Pendrathen
Beach on the northeast side of St. Mary’s is particularly good for that, as is Porth Hellick to the south. And don’t ignore the Limpets on the rocks. They make a good bait for Wrasse on their own, and added to a worm make a great cocktail. My biggest ever Wrasse came on limpet and worm. I also take packs of Seafreeze oiled black lug. It keeps without the need for a fridge or freezer and it works! I’ve had plenty of Wrasse and Pollack on it. When it comes to picking a rock mark to fish basically just pitch up where ever you fancy the look of. Wrasse are everywhere as are Pollack, and the water is so clear around the islands you can see fish chasing your lure and nosing around your bait under a float in places, and if you can spot a lighter patch put a bait on the bottom for a while and see what turns up. Could be anything! Mullet If you like Mullet you’ll love Scilly but they are a challenge. They follow the tide into rocky bays on all the islands and you’ll see them inches from the shore. These are natural ocean feeders. There are no estuaries or fishing boats for them to congregate around so you need stealth and patience in the open bays, but put in some time and you will be rewarded. Bread is as good a bait as any and you can get them feeding on that, and all you need is your spinning rod with your reel loaded with 8lb fluorocarbon straight through. I’d go up to 8lb as you’ll be fishing rocky areas. The rig is very simple. Use a small white polystyrene straight through tube float held in place with split shot about 12 to 18 inches from the hook and that’s it. You can also try a small Mepps type spinner with the treble cut off and a short 3 inch length of fluro carbon tied in its place to a size 10 hook baited with ragworm when the fish are a little further out. On St. Mary’s Porthcressa Beach, Porthloo, Bar Point, Porth Hellick, and Old Town Bay are good spots for Grey Mullet, and Pendrathen Beach for Golden Greys. On all the islands just wander around until you find them. A pair of binoculars are useful and polaroid’s a must. You can see shoals of Golden Grey’s patrolling the sandy beaches at times and the Mepps approach with a small ragworm or artificial like the HTO Stink Pots ragworm lures can take fish. Boat Fishing There aren’t any dedicated angling charter boats on the Isles or Scilly so don’t go expecting to have full day trips. However, skipper Joe Pender runs The Sapphire out of St. Mary’s and combines Pelagic trips for birdwatchers and fishing for anglers at least twice a week, leaving St. Mary’s harbour at 5pm. Joe varies the trips between reef marks fishing mainly for Pollack and Ling, and Shark trips setting up a chum slick and drifting. Blue Sharks are the main target with a few Porbeagles caught each year, and the biggest boated is around 180lbs. I’ve had Blue’s to 150lb on the Sapphire. Joe is aided by Paul Whittaker with the shark fishing and they operate a strict tag a release policy. On the shark trips it’s worth taking a spinning rod to catch Garfish in the slick, and you can fish the bottom for all sorts of species. Anything could turn up and I’ve had Cod, Gurnards, Wrasse, Spurdog, Whiting, to name a few. For trips contact Joe on 07776204631 or check his information board on St. Mary’s Quay. Oh and don’t ignore the bird watching. Scilly is one of the best places in the UK to see visiting and migratory sea birds, especially rare birds to UK waters, with various Shearwaters, Petrels, and Skuas amongst others. There is also a very good chance that Dolphins will put on a show on these trips and you could also see Whales, Sunfish, and possibly Loggerhead Turtles. I’ve even seen big Tuna jumping out of the water feeding on Mackerel. Travel and Accommodation You can travel to the Isles of Scilly by small plane or boat. Isles of Scilly Travel (www.islesofscilly-travel. co.uk) operate both with the Scillonian III leaving daily from Penzance Harbour between Easter and November, and flights run from Exeter, Newquay, and Land’s End. Sailing time for the boat is 2hrs 45mins with flights from Land’s End taking just 15 minutes. If you are taking fishing tackle with you I would advise travelling by boat as the luggage allowance is greater than on the flights. The Scilly’s are only small islands and holiday accommodation books up very quickly so bear this in mind when planning a trip. There are options for B&B, self-catering, hotels, and camping. Check out the Isles of Scilly Tourist Board website (www.visitislesofscilly.com) and Scilly OnLine (www.scillyonline.co.uk) for places to stay, or just do a Google search for holiday accommodation. The best time to go from a visiting anglers point of view is between late May and the end of September, and apart from the Wrasse fishing in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic which is second to none, who knows how many species are possible in this largely untapped anglers paradise.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
As I write this report the wind is blowing a gale out of the east and those tree’s that still had a covering of leaves are losing them at a rate of knots. By now I would have expected many of the colder water species to be showing up in numbers but the shore fishing scene still seems to be very slow in the Plymouth area. I have heard some sketchy reports of the odd codling being caught further up the Tamar but to date many of the deeper water marks further down the river such as Devils and Mutton Cove are still to get going for any of the species one would usually expect to latch into during this time of year. The conger eels are very much absent at present with many local anglers putting in the hours but not getting the rewards. Hopefully the next set of neap tides will see an improvement on the few strap eels that have been caught to date. If you can get it then fresh squid will out fish most other baits. One angler who has proven that the fish are out there to be caught is Anthony Edney of Castaways SAC. After latching into a nice Thin-Lip Mullet of 4-11 at a local river mark he then made the long trip up to Chesil and was rewarded with a cracking Cod of 11-13. Many local anglers are currently making the long trip up to Chesil at present and most are reporting good catches of flatfish when the seas are calm and clear around Cogden/West Bexington along with Cod from the deep water areas when the water is coloured. Another Castaways SAC member enjoying recent success is Dave Downs who fished a South Hams rock mark for a cracking small eyed ray of 12-6 whilst fellow angler Gav Cuthbertson also managed
a nice ray during the same session. Considering how mild this autumn has been so far I fully expect to hear more big rays including Blondes being caught throughout November. Since burning his cursed fishing hat, Steve Arnold has been in a good run of form on the fishing front weighing in a good huss of just over 10lb whilst raying followed up with a cracking Blonde Ray of 14lb+ from a Bristol Chanel shore mark. If only you had burnt that hat earlier Shaggs! With the over-night temperatures starting to fall away flounders should start putting in an appearance from any time now. The River Fowey always fishes slightly earlier than the rest of the estuaries and that would be my bet for the coming month subject to rainfall levels staying low. The Teign should also come to the fore from November onwards although you will need peeler crab for both of these rivers. Although its’ not been confirmed to me I have heard that there may now be access issues for anglers wanting to fish the Netherton area of the Teign. Worth bearing this in mind and perhaps trying alternative locations instead. On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 has been finding some good sport for his loyal customers, with plenty of Cod showing on both the wrecks and reefs along with Pollack and Ling. Fishing one of the local reefs produced some god Black Bream, Bullhuss and Eels whilst Pat Meegan recorded a cracking Red Bream of 6-4. That’s from me for this month – hopefully I’ll be able to report on countless Cod being caught in next month’s report. Happy Dipping!

It’s incredibly rugged construction also means that the lantern can deal with extreme wear and tear and will even survive an accidental drop from 2 metres. Featuring an integrated USB port the lantern can be easily charged at home or in the car. It includes the brand’s innovative BatteryLock™ technology, put the power of light in your hands this autumn season with the new Coleman Twist 300 Lantern.

Featuring a super-bright 700 lumen light output and a beam distance of 330 metres, the Divide+ 700 is the perfect companion this dark season. With a 55 hour run time on low, keep a Coleman Batterylock Divide 700 to hand at home this autumn, and be prepared when the lights go out!

LDSFC Recreational Fishing Trip 19th October. Seven Lymington and District SFC members boarded Charter Boat “Last Laugh” skippered by John Skeggs for a day’s recreational fishing. The crew consisted of more experienced anglers and new members, who were keen to learn and take advice from them and the skipper. First stop was Christchurch Ledge where the target fish were to be pollack and the method was to drift using baited feathers or small lures. This proved productive for all. Whilst most fish were returned, some were kept as bait for our next target fish which were going to be bass which meant a move out to the west of the Needles. Here the method would also be drifting, using either bait or lures suspended under floats. New member Alan Rutter soon showed the experienced crew how to do it and brought in a bass 5lbs 7oz. Arran Harmer followed with two more, the largest being 5lbs 15oz. With Robin Lane having snapped his rod we headed
New Club member Alan Rutter with a bass weighing 5lb 7oz.
off for our last move, where the target fish would be plaice but with the chance of catching all sorts. Rigs for plaice saw many assorted coloured beads and spoons baited with ragworm and squid being used. It didn’t take long for the first plaice to show and was soon followed by a steady flow of these fish with Malcolm Gerrish boating 8, Arran Harmer 7, largest being 3lbs, Roland Blomfield 5, Robin Lane 4, Alan Rutter 3 which included his first double shot, several dogfish and gurnard. George Dark also had a plaice, dogfish and smoothhound, but lost what looked like a good ray on the last drop. Harry Grey also caught plaice, gurnard and thornback ray. This was the last outing for Last Laugh as she is being sold and replaced by a new boat which John hopes will soon be seen on the water. These trips are non competitive and designed for new comers to be able to fish with more seasoned anglers. If you are interested and want more information please contact Robin Lane 078 7647 1901.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
Although I haven’t quite got round to doing the first trip to the Isle of White for the cod and whiting it is certainly feeling a bit more wintery this month. For the last couple of weeks wind from the east or northeast has kept us on our toes. Despite similar forecasts for high northeast winds and rain, we managed to get 3 out of 4 days in on our last trip to Alderney and Cherbourg this season. Fishing was good with 18 species coming to the boat over the 3 days. Highlight of the trip had to be a session at anchor on a wreck on the last day as we came back across the channel in an easterly 4. I’ve always heard lots of mythical stories of anglers catching big turbot when fishing for
congers in front of a wreck but never seen one myself until now. Simon Ringrose, using a whole mackerel flapper on a heavy trace, landed a superb 16lb 4oz turbot to start the session off. The guys then got stuck into plenty of ling and congers followed by some decent bream as the tide cut away. Further inshore anglers have been getting stuck into plenty of tope and rays on the banks as well as the late run of bream on some of the reef marks. Last trip down for flats this weekend along with the first up to the Needles for the cod. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins As the summer slowly relinquishes its grasp and the autumn temperatures drop the fishing in Poole is still producing some excellent catches in the Harbour and along the Piers. In Poole Harbour a big Ballan Wrasse weighing 6lb 1 ozs was landed on Mistress Linda just 30 metres from Brownsea Island’s pier along with Red Mullet, Garfish, Mackeral, Plaice and plenty of Bream, Our Gemma skipper M Mimms landed a 5lb Cod and Gilthead Bream close to the same mark, Plaice have been plentiful in the harbour but as the month progressed these species are slowly departing the harbour. In Poole Bay along the beaches the fishing has remained constant with excellent catches of Plaice and a few bonus Turbot and Brill. Drifting along Southbourne on Our Gemma Mervyn produced a nice 8lb Cod for his anglers. Mackeral made a surprize return and for a few days were caught in numbers only to disappear as quickly as they arrived. There are still plenty of Gurnards, Dabs and the last of
the Bream to be caught. Rare to this area are Couch’s Bream but over the last 2 months several have been landed mostly weighing around the 1lb mark. The 1st of the trips to the famous Cod marks off the Island of Wight produced many Channel Whiting, small Congers and the old faithful Dogfish but alas no Cod for the Mistress Linda. There have been several Cod caught in this area since that trip and we look forward to venturing over there for some spectacular winter fishing. Looking forward we will soon be seeing the arrival of the winter species Channel Whiting / Cod in the Bay and Flounders / Herring inside the Harbour. The next boat fishing competition from Poole is the Poole Cod Comp Sunday November 20th 2016 for more details contact Andy at Poole Sea Angling Centre 01202676597.

Sea Angling News, November 2016 Poole Dolphins Evening Charter Boat Comp on Monday Night 29/08/16 with Andy Adams on Random Harvest. We fished with 5 members, 2 guest and 1 junior member. We left Poole Quay with a fresh westerly wind which was quite strong to venture outside the harbour with the reassurance from the skipper that it was reasonably calm outside. We anchored up not far from Boscombe Pier with the hope of finding a few Trigger Fish but it wasn't to be. We were plagued with robbing little Bream although welcome to catch they robbed the worm baits before anything else had much chance. We totalled over 80 small Bream which all went back along with 30 Scad, a few pouting, a few Mackerel, a Couple of Undulate Rays, a Pollock, a Baillions Wrasse and a Blenny. Well done to Jay Hemming who won on the night with 47 fish points, Second was Danny Williamson with 40 Fish Points and Third was Phil Thomas with 38 Fish Points and the largest Undulate of the night 8lb. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 22 Fish Points. Everyone caught and enjoyed the nights fishing but the hunt for the elusive Trigger Fish goes on. Evening Pier Comp at Swanage on Wednesday 31/08/16. Members fished around the pier and on different levels. A big welcome to new members Shane Munford, James Hills and the Nunn family. The night was reasonably mild but overcast with a breeze blowing. Well done to Shane Munford who won on the night blitzing the small Wrasse, Pout, Smelt and Black bream for 477cm, Brian Read Second the 312cm and Phil Thomas Third with 192cm. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with 148cm, Finlay Nunn Second with 93cm and Oli Nunn Third with 57cm. The nights catch was mainly made up of Ballen Wrasse with a variety of species including Corkwing Wrasse, Baillions Wrasse, Smelt, Pout, Black Bream, Pollock, Scad, Mackerel, Garfish, a couple of small Conger and an Undulate Ray of 10lb 8oz Caught by Dave Draper. Everyone caught on the night and Juniors were very enthusiastic with the fish they caught. Many thanks to Chris Mackenzie for getting the fish and chips which everyone enjoyed. Home Shore Comp at Shore Road, Poole on Wednesday Evening 14/9/16. Fishing along the shore outside of the Harbour near to the Jazz Café. Hopes were high for a variety of fish including a few flatties. It was a lovely warm evening with lots people on the beach and quite a few swimmers. Members set up away from the busy areas to fish the last hour of daylight and on into the dark. Well done to Phil Thomas who had a cracking night pulling in fish after fish he totalled 341cm made up of small Bass and Smoothound. Second Phil Walmsley with 167cm and Third Chris Mackenzie with 90cm. Curtis Driver won the Junior Section with a Small Smoothound of 33cm. Most people struggled for a bite on the night with a few blanking. Small Bass and Smoothound were the only species caught which was disappointing as no Flatties not even a Pout showed up. A great night to be out fishing if only a few more fish showed up but that's fishing. Charter Boat Trip on Sunday 18/09/16 with Phil Higgins aboard Mistress Linda. We fished with five members and four guests. The day started out overcast with little or no wind. The sun soon broke through as we drifted in the bay and turned into a lovely hot sunny day. We started to catch a few Plaice mixed in with lots of small Bream. The tide was starting to slow so Phil decided to move to a rough ground mark and anchor up. We caught lots of decent sized Bream mixed in with various Wrasse and quite a lot of Pout. We were hoping to see a Trigger Fish being caught but unfortunately wasn't on our boat. A small private boat near us manage a nice sized Trigger around 3lb and took great delight in holding it up for a Photograph. We went back to drifting as the tide turned for the rest of the afternoon and found a few more Plaice. The Competition was very close with the top three only separated by one fish. Paul Driver won on the day with 132 Fish Points. The catch was made up of 21 Bream, 2 Plaice, a Pout, a Smoothhound and a few Wrasse. Second was Phil Thomas with 128 Fish Points and Third Dave Doig with 127 Fish Points. Other Species caught included a Dab, Tub Gurnard and Pollock. We had a great days fishing with superb weather. Everyone enjoyed the days fishing and the hospitality aboard Mistress Linda. Evening Charter Trip on Monday night 19/09/16 with Andy Adams aboard Random Harvest. We fished with five members two guests and one junior member. The weather was overcast and spotting with rain as it had been most of the day. The forecast was for it to stop during the evening but it didn't and the rain persisted all evening. We ventured out of the harbour to anchor up on a rough ground mark in the bay. The one positive
RESULTS
with the weather was that their was no wind and it was flat calm. Small Bream gave a good account of themselves from the start while we still had daylight. One of our guests managed a lovely Red Mullet which lifted everyone's spirts in the hope of a few different species. Chris Mackenzie caught a potential club record Couch's Bream of 8.1 oz and Dave Hoare caught another Couch's Bream which was the same weight sharing the potential club record. Paul Driver won on the night with 40 Fish Points catching Bream, Pouting, Scad, Smoothound and an Undulate Ray of 8lb 12oz. The Ray gave a good account of itself on very light Bream outfit coming in backward in the tide at one point. It was a surprise to actually land the Ray as it took a very small slither of squid on a size 4 worm hook intended for Bream. Second was Phil Thomas on 28 Fish Points and Third Chris Mackenzie on 22 Fish Points. Junior Curtis Driver had a good night, He caught from the start and won the Junior Section with 31 Fish Points catching more Bream than anyone else on the night. He also managed a surprise Cuttlefish which latched onto one of the Pout he caught and would not let go. Other Species on the night Dogfish and Pollock. The persistent rain had put a damper on the evening but the good fishing coupled with the different species caught made it one of the best nights fishing we have had this year. This was the last Evening Charter trip of the year. We have had a reasonably good year weather wise only confined to the harbour for one trip. Many thanks to the skippers Phil Higgins Mistress Linda for the first trip and Andy Adams Random Harvest for all the others. A big thank you to Chris Mackenzie for organising the trips and sorting the bait for each trip. A really good competition, well organised with lots of different species caught. Everyone enjoyed the various types of fishing we managed this year all in good humour with plenty of banter and looking forward to next year with hopefully a few more Mackerel.
NWASAC Match Report: 8th Round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2016, Sun 25.9.16, Dee Estuary, Queensferry (18 rods). the strong winds and ventured out from Poole aboard ‘Strongbow’ skippered by Dick Peckham. Dick was able to save the day and offer a days fishing at short notice to several of the members, following a trip to Weymouth being cancelled due to the weather. Despite the high winds, it is usually possible to get out from Poole to fish either the bay or harbour such is the unique geographical position of the port. On the day we were fortunate enough to be able to fish both the harbour and bay given the wind was from a westerly direction and therefore shelter could be found from Old Harry Rocks and the surrounding cliffs. The day started by drifting the harbour for plaice, however sport was slow and baits were be torn apart by small bream; therefore Dick plumped to head out into the bay to try for rays and other fish on a bank. Almost immediately upon arrival Arran Harmer bent into a good sized undulate ray of 9lb plus, quickly followed by Anton Emblem with one slightly smaller. Other fish caught included tub gurnard, dogfish, mackerel and smoothounds. As the tide started to fade, the wind forced the boat to snake about on the anchor warp and bites started to dry up. The decision was therefore made to head for the cover of Old Harry Rocks to fish a ledge close into the shore. With the fishing more comfortable, a number of bream, mackerel and gurnard were boated as the tide turned. The remainder of the day was spent drifting for plaice along Studland and the outer harbour, however, it was evident that they weren’t playing ball and only bream and smoothounds could be found. Overall an enjoyable day was had by all and big thanks go to Dick and Robin Lane for organising a trip at the last minute.

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas
There have been some good catches of bass off Ilfracombe aboard John Barbeary’s ‘Bluefin’ with inshore reefs providing exciting sport, live sandeel proving the best bait. Holsworthy Sea Anglers fished off Ilfracombe on Bluefin landing several huss, tope and smoothound. A few tope have also been boated from Bideford Bay the best a fine fish of 39lb 8oz to the rod of Kevin Pike who won Appledore Shipbuilders Monthly boat fishing competition. Andrew Atkinson took second and third places with bull huss of 11lb and 10lb 4oz. A few smoothound have been landed by shore anglers the best I have heard of caught by Combe Martin SAC member Ian Laird weighing 9lb 15oz. Fellow club members Kevin Legge and Dave Brooke enjoyed a successful session on a local surf beach with Kevin beaching a fine bass of 10lb 7oz and a small eyed ray of 9lb 12oz. Dave sharing the success with a bass of 8lb 7oz. Grey mullet have been feeding well and I managed a pleasing specimen of 5lb 2oz to win Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Lyn Fish. Runner up in the event was James Gubb Fradgely with a bull huss of 10lb 1oz and third Rob Scoines with a boat caught small eyed ray of 9lb 13oz. Daniel Welch secured forth with a fine bass of 7lb 13oz taken on bread-flake whilst targeting
Kevin Pike 39lb 8oz tope grey mullet. Combe Martin SAC give special thanks to all who participated and supported the event, to Sakuma and Braunton Baits for donating some excellent prizes. Thanks also to Tony Vickery and all at the Rising Sun for providing delicious food and making all welcome. The event helped to raise £400 for the West Exmoor Federation of schools.

ALDERNEY
ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding SHORE SPORT The switch is on and early doors for the Autumn and Winter that we could have has started really well. Some really good Bass fishing on the lures with fish to 7lb+ taken, mainly off the surface too which is explosive! Black Bream have arrived in excellent numbers and we are catching them on Mullet gear – how else!! Its awesome fun to say the least. Fish tactics exactly the same as you would for the Mullet including the ground bait but step up your trace line. Fish to over 3lb reported! Red Mullet and Sole are showing with fish in reasonable numbers and all the other bits and bobs you associate with this time of year. We have also had a run of Codling too with visiting lad Malcom from Bristol getting the largest so far reported, a fish of around 7 or 8lb! On top of that a load of squid have arrived (read match report below) which is great fun in itself and great food but normally we then get excellent action with Tope, Ray, Huss and Eels with a sprinkling of Smoothound to boot too. Excited!! BOAT SPORT Last report for this year, its not been as good as it should be but there are plenty of Black Bream to 3lb 8oz and some Couches to 3lb too, all the normal species you guys associate with Alderney are showing but not the high intensity that we are used too leading to disappointment for the visiting anglers but this coming week w/c 24/10/16 I am expecting the last two visiting boats, Wild Frontier and Peace &Plenty, to do well – see if I am right! ALDERNEY ANGLING FESTIVAL 2016 The 31st event turned in to one of the best fishing results the festival has seen for a number of years. Plenty of specimen sized fish justified the event to be continued to be held at this time of year. Attendance was down but with such a positive response we all expect numbers to be back up next year. Most thought that Alderney would continue the pattern of the year with plenty of small fish and a struggle to hit the high qualifying weights but alas Alderney produced the goods with just a handful of spaces left on the board to fill. Around £6,500 was handed out in prize money!! Full list of winners below. Next years event is from Saturday 14th October to Saturday 21st October so get flights and accommodation booked up before you miss out! Alderney Angling Festival 2016 Results Conger 2. ALDERNEY ANGLING SHORE LEAGUE 2016 Two matches to report on in this reporting period and both fished really well. Heaviest Bass A turnout of 13 on a perfect day for hunting Bass! Plenty of Bass had been reported from around the island but a lot of small fish, so the challenge was getting one over the minimum size limit of 42cm. Most had a similar plan, throw some lures around till dusk and then sit for the last two hours on bait in darkness to try to improve what they had. Big fish were elusive but 7 anglers managed to bring fish to the scales which made for a closely contested weigh in, most anglers managing to find Bass too..............most!! Top rod was JC winning his first ever League match with a 4lb 4oz fish, with Dicky getting a last gasp silver bar to get in to second place. Match Results: 1st – John Copeland - 4lb 4oz 2nd - Dicky Smith - 3lb 10oz 3rd - Jordan Walters - 3lb 5oz 4th – Gary Maurice - 3lb 2oz 5th - Mark Harding - 2lb 10oz 6th - Andy Black - 2lb 2oz 8th - Darren Braby - 2lb 1oz Heaviest Bag of Squid First try at this format and what fun! Even the squid turned up to play which was a right bonus! It wasn’t just squid neither, a quick tweak of the rules included cuttlefish so really I guess this match was the Heaviest Bag of Cephalopods!! Top rod was Dicky Smith with a bag of 1 cuttle and 11 squid for a weight of 6lb which just about pipped Cephalopoder extraordinaire James Clarke who somehow managed 18 squid for 5lb 14oz. Dicky won the heaviest pool too with his cuttle of 1lb 13oz which beat Andrew Scott’s cuttle. However, the biggest squid of the night fell to Fieona Cosheril and she won a round of applause! Match Results: 1st – Dicky Smith – 11 squid, 1 cuttle - 6lb 2nd – James Clarke – 18 squid - 5lb 14oz 3rd – Fieona Cosheril- 5 squid - 3lb 2oz 4th – Mick Maurice – 5 squid - 3lb 1oz 5th – Michael Bohan – 6 squid - 2lb 13oz 6th – Adam Salmon – 6 squid - 2lb 11oz 7th – Andrew Scott – 2 squid, 1 cuttle – 2lb 8th – Wayne Cosheril – 2 squid – 1lb 9th - Mark Harding – 1 squid - 6oz Next Match is eagerly awaited 24 Hour Rover Heaviest Bag on Saturday 29th October fishing from 12.00 till Sunday 12.00pm. Booking in from 11.30am at Alderney Angling. The Species List is available now with bag limits and minimum fish size limits on. Two rods, max 4 hooks. League Table Top consolidated themselves and dropped matches not having too much effect……………yet! Further down I can see one or two things happening so long as remaining jokers played right and people doing well. Top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and the winner of that will get to go to the Florida Keys!! (or if preferred a European destination). Best 14 matches from the 20 count. NEWS / RESULTS
West Sussex Report By Chris Snow
Well what a strange month October has been! If the water has been clear the Plaice catches have been good from Seaford, Brighton and Hove beaches with the best I have heard of at just over 3lb , in the same sessions you have been likely to catch a bagful of mackerel and garfish with the odd Gurnard thrown in. Night time along the coast has seen lots of anglers targeting the cod that have started to show but generally in murkier water , the fish have been of a good average size between 5-10lb, best baits fresh black lug or a number have fallen to whole squid tactics. These fish havent been necessarily claimed by long casting with a chuck of about 50-80yds all thats needed. There has also been the obligatory Undulates still being recorded with reports of over 40 being caught on Worthing Pier in rougher conditions in one day along with cod and Congers! Considering the pier is short and on a large tide the water clears the end they continue to be surprising catches. The best one I have heard of is a 31lb fish that was caught probably about 70 yds out and I`m guessing on squid. Thankfully the Whiting havent reared there heads in the West Sussex region just yet which means you have a far better chance of something decent being snared by your bait but I’m sorry it wont be long. The outlook depending on temperature and sea conditions is pretty good as more cod will show , bass will still figure to livebaits but the slid out scad will probably swapped for a whiting or a pout.Undulates seem to be an all year catch now and if the sea has been coloured up there will be a great number of these recorded mainly caught on fish baits, I would suggest if conditions right squid will be the number one bait
as will attract most of the larger species, some people prefer mackerel but this limits the species caught. If the weather remains mild then there is a chance the mackerel and gars will still be a worthwhile target. One thing I must ask is that if you do fish Worthing Pier please do adhere to the Pier rules and clear any mess up before leaving, there have been a few people showing disregard and it wont be long and a ban may show its ugly head...

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association By Richard Saxby
The nights are drawing in, the temperature is dropping and the first cod has been landed from Burnham. The weekend tides over the last month have either been neaps or springs with a couple of big sets that have made the fishing a bit challenging, trying to find somewhere with enough tide but not too much out of the worst of the wind. None the less a few members have managed some tidy fish. The first weekend in October Ultra White was out with 3 crew. A busy day with hounds, dogs, thornies, eels, whiting, small tope, spotted ray and a huss of 10-9 for Martin Quinn, a conger of 22lb for Nigel Devey and a lovely early cod of 10-2 for Andy Georgiou. The following weekend 4 boats made it out for a short one over top tide. Two of the boats pushed out in to a fairly lumpy sea with the other two staying in the shelter of the river. The fishing was considerably better further out with a surprising number of eels, loads of thornies and dogs but no one found a cod. The next weekend was big spring tides so no one ventured out but Stephen Saxby and myself had a charter trip on Valkyrie and spent a pleasant day in the solent with Stephen catching his first cod of the winter of 10-14.
Friday the 21st and 2 boats made it out in pleasant conditions for a short one over high. Both boats headed down to Lilstock with the 5 anglers catching a steady stream of eels, thornies and dogs with man of the moment Andy Georgiou again finding the only cod with a nice one of 10lb 4oz. Although not everyone’s cup of tea I enjoy catching conger and it's great to see the numbers on the up in the bay. The next month should see the cod numbers increase and hopefully some good size whiting to add to the usual suspects. Fish of the month for September was won by Andy Georgiou with a hound of 18lb 7oz and 119 % The next club competition is the Wilf Dunstone Trophy from Burnham on Sea on Sunday 27th November. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 17th November which is also our AGM at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD
Sea Angling News, November 2016
MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by Keith Wigglesworth
October turned out to be a strange old month here in the Bristol Channel. If you were after rays, congers or huss then there was plenty of sport to be had within a short distance of either Minehead or Watchet harbours. A number of 20lb + blonde rays have been caught, but the most prolific ray by far has been the small eyed ray. Congers have ranged from boot-laces up to 50lb and several nice bass have turned up with one of 11lb+ falling to a Minehead boat and a monster of 15lb+ from the Blue Anchor/Dunster beach area. There are still a few smoothounds about too. For species angler the month started off very slowly with the skippers having to search hard to find the
variety of fish normally available at this time of the year. Strong easterly winds blowing for a fortnight didn’t help. Things have picked up in the last two weeks though and there is now some good sport to be had on light tackle with anything from between 15-20 species to be caught during a trip out. The whiting are now showing and it would appear that the cod are following them in. Four double figure cod have been caught in the past two weeks with the best tipping the scales at over 15lb to private boat owner Tom Wright. Finding a cod of any size at the moment is still a bit hit or miss, but with smaller codling starting to show from shore marks, it won’t be long before they appear at the boats.

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL
BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle I must admit, it's been a bit disappointing on the number of codling we are experiencing in the channel this autumn. Things were encouraging in late August into early September. But we can't dwell on what's lacking and we must concentrate on what happening. We can have faith in the cod as they always surprise us in one way on another. There's plenty of other species to get stuck into if the codling are thin on the ground. The past month has seen Small eyed ray, spotted ray, blonde ray and the trusty Thornback ray making themselves known along with a few late smoothounds and a few bass and the odd quality sole in and around the Minehead area. Colin Evans from Dunster caught a fine sole of 2lb 6oz on his last cast late night on Minehead town beach. Piling on the last of his rag and lug on a 4/0 hook looking to get a last cast bass or codling the big sole wasn't what he expected. Honiton Sea angling club member Martin Pearce (aka Taff) has been on a mission with fellow club members and mates. They have been hunting down the tope along the north Devon coast. Recently it all came good with with Taff bagging a fine 31lb 4oz specimen and a new club record. It doesn't end there for Taff though. A few days later the lads are back out again. Unable to get on the chosen mark ,they fish another and I'd say Taff was extremely please as he smashes his own club record again with a fantastic Tope of 42lb 8oz. Well done Martin from the S.A.N team. (See page 10) From one achievement to another. Gary from Wells has recently notched up his 4000th fish that he has
Gary from Wells with his 3999 & 4000 fish he has caught from Blue Anchor wall. Gary fishes most weekends at Blue Anchor and has recorded every fish he has caught here.
ATLANTIC BLUE MINEHEAD
caught from Blue Anchor wall. Gary fishes back to back tides most weekends regardless of the weather. I may be wrong but I'm sure it's taken Gary 3 years to reach this target. He's already looking to 5000, so watch this space. As we approached the middle of October a few better cod started to appear. The first double reported was caught by local Minehead angler Andy Stilling. Fishing with Justin Haller they fished a local mark on a flooding tide, about half tide Andy only managed to lob a large 3 squid bait out 40m planning a walk back as the tide was flying in. What happened next had me laughing my head off when they relayed what happened. As the cod was beached the hooks fell out which can happen now and again, Andy noticed this and just dropped his rod and literally launched himself on top of the cod in the surf, now laying flat on top of the fish trying to get his hands on it it makes a dash for it and escapes only to beach itself, luckily for Andy who was soaked to the skin. In all the excitement of such a great fish and the tide flying in over the shallow ground Andy went to pick his rod up but the sea had claimed it. The next low tide he went to hopefully pick it up, and there it was still in good order with a near 20lb conger on the end that had scavenge the remaining squid. The month ahead will hopefully sea the cod fishing pick up as the bigger cod and codling move into the channel. Fishing low any of the low water marks mainly on neap tides should increase the chances of finding one or two. Realistically tho a decent cod can turn up anywhere. Wherever you go. Tightlines & happy hunting

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs The weather has now turned autumnal and we focus our attention on the winter Cod fishing. South of the Needles, we have seen the first of the winter species turn up in the gullies. Whiting,Cod, Bullhuss, Pollack are all making an appearance, the signs look good for the coming months. You might even be lucky enough to catch a Turbot ! Western Solent , the Brambles and Ryde middle are all producing Cod and Whiting. The average weight Cod being around 8lb. Don't miss out on a Needles Lunker (big Cod), make a booking with a local skipper! There are still plenty

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This month has seen the arrival of the Channel Whiting along the West Wight (as predicted), they are in good numbers with some under size fish amongst them, the unusual thing is that we are also pulling up Scad and Mackerel on the same gear, so its a win win situation at the moment. Along with the arrival of the Channel Whiting we have seen a lot of small Conger Eel around eighteen inches long (more like a silver Eel) plus a lot of small Pouting which is the feed stock for the larger predators. The summer fish are also still here with Tope Smoothound and Bream being boated and returned, These fish will move on over the next few weeks however if the weather stays mild you could still see the Smoothound in January. The inshore Cod are still arriving on the usual marks around the Needles, all around the 6lb to 10lb mark however the Solent (as last year) has really kicked off with some boats reporting up to eight fish over one tide. This month I have also taken some night trips Sole fishing which has produced some good Sole and Plaice, but the surprise catch was a 9lb Cod in 3.8mtr
of water which was very welcome. Ps. The British Cod Championship will be held again this year from Lymington. Two day event held on Wednesday 23rd November and Thursday 24th November The entry forms can be obtained from our web site (West Wight charter skippers Assoc.) or you can ring Kevin Jewl on 07843208597. NEWS / WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, November 2016
Port Report We are indeed fortunate in Weymouth to have the Weymouth Angling Centre as a major part of our angling community. Andy Selby, owner of the Centre, is an untiring ambassador of our sport and, through his multitude of contacts, brings a great deal of very welcome work to the local charter fleet though the various competitions he and his wife Charlotte along with his enthusiastic Angling Centre staff encourage to the town.
one. There is a global shortage of squid to add to the increasing challenges facing the angler.
October is often an unsettled month of weather in which many 'normal' angling charters can be lost but competitions can still proceed due to the structuring of each different daily event within it and how the fishing can adapt to the conditions which in themselves become part of the challenge.
November has, for the past few years, been an excellent month for bass. There may be a few launce around, joey mackerel or little scad to use as bait but this is the month when artificial lures are used with white being the current favourite. Bream usually stay around until the first sustained period of unsettled weather but, with sea temperatures still so warm, they could continue well into the month before moving off.
The WIBAC (Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition) is such a five day event and took place in very brisk easterly winds in the middle of October and involved half of the Weymouth boats. The event will be featured in the next edition of Jim Whippy's excellent new glossy magazine ' Saltwater Boat Angling and so I will not go into detail of how the adventure unfolded. It is well worth noting, however, that in a year regarded by many as being a hard year as far as the 'popular' fish (plaice, bream, bass) go the WIBAC showed just how many species Weymouth does offer to the sporting angler rather than those more concerned with justifying their trip by the amount of 'quality' fish to take home for the table. In the 'Species' event, competitors aimed to catch just one of as many different types of fish as they could within the six hour fishing period. Just imagine how many YOU could catch in a day. We often tot up the species caught by everyone on the boat on a charter trip and sometimes we manage to get into double figures but these competition anglers will be aiming to individually achieve double figures of species with the winners needing to get at least 14 species to be in with a chance of winning although this year an amazing 15 species took top spot on this particular day. Apart from this excellent event, the Weymouth boats have been targeting bream which have shown up in good numbers from the usual inshore marks around Portland. Bream are not as easy to catch as some anglers imagine and there are always those on the boats who have the knack and will consistently catch whilst others around them struggle. It is always worth noticing how a successful angler is fishing and then try to adapt your own terminal tackle to match it. That seems a pretty obvious statement but observing and then changing the end gear often seems too much hassle for many. It makes sense to put as much effort into the day as you can, especially when the fish are biting all around you!

Ray fishing has been excellent with blondes and undulate rays the main species but we have continued to experience an increasing number of thornback rays. Although common to many other ports, they have become a very welcome addition to the Weymouth/ Portland sea area.

Whiting start to show along with an occasional inshore cod with marks to the west of Portland seeing the first of the whiting catches before they venture further eastwards around Portland Bill and come into Weymouth and settle on their favourite Adamant Bank. Expect the rays to continue to feature throughout the month plus a few conger venturing out onto 'open' ground as well as smoothounds which have provided superb sport this year with a number of outstanding specimens in the 20lb range turning up from many different marks. The Shambles Bank has been exceptional this year in terms of quantity of turbot caught. There have been catches into the 20's and even 30's of turbot with a couple of truly amazing days of 40+ landed. The vast majority of these fish are undersized and have been returned but they have kept the rods busy and, in our naively optimistic way, we believe these numbers are 'good for the future'.

Pollack have started to return to the offshore wrecks and will increase thoughout November. There are also a few bass on the wrecks with the slim chance of finding a cod that decided not to leave with the rest. So, plenty to look forward to in November and hopes will be high for the weather letting us go to sea and to enjoy one of the 'Autumn Pleasures' in the shape of the big 'English' squid at the end of a trip as we approach Weymouth Harbour. Thank you to everyone for continuing to come to Weymouth and for supporting the local charter fleet.... your custom is very welcomed and valued. Bass - Fish On II
Bassing has picked up. Make the most of it....the future of the bass is this year's hot topic and there are all sorts of ideas and rumours flying around with growing demands for a complete ban on all bassing for 2017. It will be very interesting to see what happens next year but the Recreational Angling sector has been harshly treated in 2016 and there is an ever growing resentment towards the decision makers at the unfairness of it all. The 'big fish' year continues with stacks of conger about from both the wrecks and inshore reefs. With the ever increasing scarcity of mackerel for bait, anglers have been catching and using pout. Pout is the most numerous species of any wreck and once the conger do get on the feed they will take pout although not as readily as mackerel. Cuttlefish can be good but it is very expensive as is squid. Remember when we complained about 5lb box of squid being nearly a tenner??? Now that same box is ÂŁ25 IF you can get

SAMALITE LEAGUE ON CHESIL October 15th, Chesil centre, 4pm - 9pm. On this match we were joined by the Southern League members which bumped the entry to 53, a well attended match considering the weather was against us once again !! Flat calm right up until the Friday then with the wind swinging around to a moderate to strong south westerly bringing with it torrential rain it was difficult fishing conditions to say the least. Although rough the water was clear which meant garfish saved the day as the bottom fishing was awful . A few managed to catch mullet which was a bonus on the light tackle but as many were lost in the surf and undertow. I was next to Chris Read who hooked and lost 3 in the surf but managed to land the 4th. Into darkness scad also fell to the long snoods and pop ups. For the lads that fished the bottom only a few black bream , 2 dogfish and 2 cod, the most unusual catch was Julian Shambrooks 4lb 6oz wrasse on clean ground. John Sloper caught a nice pollack of 2lb in A zone and Ben Bradstock skilfully landed a 60cm conger which must of weighed 2lbish. Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand
This month it appears that for many, including myself, it's been a month of highs & and lows. We all expected the Cod to have arrived in big numbers, as in previous years. Most of us had already started targeting the Cod but many have struggled with just the odd few being landed for most anglers. The water temperature was up around 18c, the warmest of the whole year and with a steady eaterly wind the sea has been very settled and calm. With the Bream arriving everywhere, the Sole & Plaice fishing had picked up along Bexi, Cogden and Burton Bradstock. It became apparent that everything is running late this year, maybe because of the settled weather. The Sole are generally landed & targeted between 30 to 90 yards along Chesil, but this year I have been finding most fish at range. With this in mind I was finding a basic up and over rig with a weighted snoods the best option to allow me to fish at distance with the bait nailed hard on the bottom for the Sole, this is a must as these lovely flat fish feed hard on the deck. I’ve also found that static fresh lug or fresh blacks have been doing the business, whilst the Plaice have been feeding hard on nice Rag baits. We were fortunate to have some lovely clear evenings which have allowed the Plaice to feed under moon light, so anglers have had some lovely bags of Plaice being landed all night in between the Sole catches. As you can see from the photos I myself was fortunate to land 8 Sole over 2lb each in 3 sessions with the
biggest weighing in on the scale at 3lb 1, which was a beautiful fish to see, let alone catch! I wasn't on my own with the Sole, as many anglers have had some remarkable sessions with these lovely fish. Halfway through the month we finally saw the wind change direction and the South Westerly blow began to set in. Unfortunately, it only lasted a few days but we did see a few Cod caught and I was one of the fortunate ones that landed 2 Cod over 8lb on a trip to West Bexington. The recent fish haven’t been in their prime, having skinny lean bodies with lacerations and appearing unhealthy to previous years. Though a few anglers have been landing lots of healthy Codling weighing in at up to 2lb, a great sign for the future! Though the last few days we have been seeing reports of a steady run of healthier Cod that have been feeding and chasing the massive shoals of Whiting, which have been running the full lengths of the beach. The Conger have also started feeding and I'm sure it won't be long before some lucky angler gets themselves a big double! Well it's definitely looking up this next month with the water temperature dropping down to 15.5C. With the late Cod arriving I think we still have a good few weeks of these beautiful fish and I'm looking forward to seeing reports of catches in the big 20’s over the next few weeks, probably on a nice live Whiting. Thanks for all your great reports and photos, keep it up and Tight lines!

LRF & MINI-SPECIES
5TH PLACE FOR ENGLAND’S U21 SHORE ANGLERS IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO With the winter invasion of whiting and pouting being a pain in the bum while whacking out big baits for the ever sought after cod, why not actually target these species or those species that predate on them during the winter months? While most people either side of you on the pier or harbour are sat down staring at a beach caster rod tip thicker than your lrf rods butt, reeling in the odd fish every 15 to 20 minuets why not have some great sport with the same fish but with gear that allows them to show what dogged fighters these species can be. Aswell as allowing these species to fight using lrf tactics to target them can really help you learn more about these species and understand how and where bigger predators snaffle the juveniles “silvers”, being on the move can not only keep you warm and active but allows you to search out areas where bigger specimens hide, once you have found a spot with a few decent fish you can usually return to that spot day after day and find a group of similar size fish will be in the area most of the time. If you are lucky enough to have some rock marks with safe access and conditions that allow for winter lrf then you may find some bigger fish in
Sea Angling News, November 2016
holes and crevasse usually associated with wrasse although casting beyond these areas can really bring good rewards too. My tips for winter whiting lrf are; Don't be afraid to fish bigger, as usually there will be lots of juveniles alongside the reel rod benders so moving up to a size 4 or 2 hook and a much bigger lure can help you pick out those bigger fish. Don't be afraid to fish heavier 7gram weights usually get lost in the bottom of my lrf bag over the summer but as the leaves start to fall from the trees I know its time to search them out and go to them as standard rather than just a last resort. More movement! To really get the predatory instincts out of these species more erratic and speedy movements of lures can really up catch rates. And most of all don't give up on lrf once the thermometer reads below 0 !!!

The Italian team finished in second giving them a silver medal closely followed in third place by Portugal while Team England finished a creditable fifth place. Throughout practice England established that there were limited numbers of larger fish to be caught and any success would depend on finding these fish these during the match days. England ended day one in fourth place, a solid start however day two proved to be more challenging and the team dropped into fifth place. England enjoyed some success on day three as they finished third and gave them a shout of a podium finish if they could find a win or second on the final day of competition. Spain, Italy and Portugal meant England could not displace the top three nations and the team finished fifth overall in the competition. England’s Charlie Tudball finished as highest placed England rod in ninth place followed closely by Callum Graham in twelfth. Final team positions 1st Spain 2nd Italy 3rd Portugal 4th Netherlands 5th England 6th Croatia 7th France Top 5 individual positions 1st Diego Perez, Spain 2nd David Romero, Spain 3rd Federico Spagnoli, Italy 4th Henrique Jesus, Portugal 5th Hector Molina, Spain The England Youth Team and the Angling Trust would like to thank their official sponsor Tronox Pro for the support in helping the team prepare and compete and to Christchurch Angling Centre for their additional help and support.
