MASSIVE STINGER LANDED ON CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT SEE PAGE 25 SIMON HART MP TRIES OUT PEMBROKESHIRE'S BASS FISHING WITH LOCAL EXPERT Shortly before the General Election the Angling Trust, as the sport's national governing body, acknowledged the 'sterling work' of seven MPs from the Conservative, Labour and LibDem parties in pressing for measures to save threatened bass stocks. Among them was Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart who last week met up with local bass guide Matt Powell to try his hand at bass fishing in his constituency. Simon was accompanied by the Angling Trust's National Campaign Coordinator Martin Salter. Matt Powell, who runs Fishing and Foraging Wales took them to one of his favourite bass marks in the south of the county and very quickly they found some fish by casting lures into the surf and over the edge of some rocky gullies. Five fish were landed in all and several more escaped or turned away from the lures at the last moment. Simon Hart said: "I have caught many species of fish but bass is not one of them, which is bit of an oversight considering that I live in one of the best bass fishing spots in the UK! It was a real delight to learn from an expert like Matt and it has served to reinforce my determination to do what I can to protect and promote this wonderful species." Matt Powell added: "It was great to have an opportunity to meet with Simon and show him the fantastic potential of the bass fishing that we have available here in Pembrokeshire. However, this precious resource needs careful protection as bass stocks across Europe are in trouble. That's why it's important that our politicians understand why we are so passionate about the conservation of these beautiful sporting fish." Angling Trust Campaigns Chief Martin Salter said:

WINNER Guy Spriggs with an epic 78lb 8oz sting ray from ferry bridge. See page 25 for full story.

"Without the strong political support from MPs like Simon Hart we would not have got the UK government to propose the recent EU winter trawling ban on bass spawning aggregations nor would we have won an increase in the bass minimum landing sizes from 36 to 42 cms which has been a demand of anglers for the last 15 years. However, there is much more that needs to be done including getting far greater protection for our inshore habitat and estuaries as well as better enforcement of the rules governing illegal netting."

SKIATHOS, AN UNKNOWN ANGLING PARADISE! “Everybody has a summer holiday” I would have thought someone would have written a song about that! For the past ten years or so, my summer retreat has been the Island of Skiathos in the Sporades group of Islands. Situated no more than a stone’s throw from the eastern shores of mainland Greece, Skiathos is a summer paradise with wall to wall sunshine, sandy beaches and glorious food! Though I have seen commercial fishing boats landing interesting catches of tuna and swordfish, I have never seen any angling activity taking place from the Island. This year however, all has changed! Whilst wandering through the old town where the harbour is, I noticed a boat named “Alexandros” advertising angling trips. The vessel is a 10mtr mono hull fitted with a Scania 420hp diesel engine. Her extensive electronics package is by Furuno and she has a top speed of around 16knots, ideal for taking anglers to areas which up until now have been unfished with rod and line! With my ears well and truly pricked up, I introduced myself to the captain, an amicable guy by the name of Dimitris Gioldasis. He was born on the neighbouring island of Skopelos and has been working the sea all his life along with his brothers and father. Now it just so happens that Dimitris is not only the first captain in Greece to hold a license and insurance to take anglers to sea, he is also one of the commercial captains that I had seen before landing the tuna and swordfish!! After a brief discussion, Dimitris invited Liz and I for a day out to sample what he had to offer. With this being his first season it was difficult for him to cater for everyone, though his plan had been to mix the fishing with a bit of snorkelling and diving with a further option of squid fishing at night. Our day however, was strictly aimed at angling. Dimitris headed “Alexandros” to a reef system only a couple of miles from the harbour, though by the amount of waypoints on his plotter screen there was no shortage of marks here! With the deftness of the experienced fisherman that he is, Dimitris anchored the vessel perfectly above the reef. We fished with fixed spool reels loaded with mono lines carrying paternoster type two hook rigs on light spinning rods. Bait was pieces of large fresh prawn and though it was clearly what the fish wanted, I couldn’t help dribbling every time we put one on the hook!

As soon as the baits hit the bottom, fish were frenzied into action. Nothing big, but loads of fish with names that I could not pronounce smashed into the prawn baits. After a couple of hours, we had caught enough fish to take back to our beloved Stamatis restaurant where owners Agelos and Vagelis Katsouras had promised to cook our catch. With the sun setting over Skiathos and the last full moon of the year rising rapidly over Skopelos like a giant fireball it was time to chill out as only the Greeks can do and sip a quick Havana rum before Dimitris fired up the powerful Scania for our homeward journey. At this time I can honestly say that I don’t think there is anywhere in the world I would rather have been! As the “Alexandros” purred her way across the flat calm sea back to Skiathos, I couldn’t help wondering what deep secrets were stored in Dimitris mind. Tuna to 250kgs, swordfish to 120kgs and many huge snapper were just a few examples of his commercial fishing past and as with most fishermen worth their salt, these secrets would not be parted with easily. With the summer season rapidly coming to a close for Dimitris and the “Alexandros” his plan for the winter is in fact to target these great game fish for the first time ever here on a professional rod and line basis. I for one, will be back next year not only to find out how he fared this year, but to sample the game fishing for myself, I can’t wait!! On arrival at the old port, the Stamatis restaurant team were eagerly awaiting our arrival. Within minutes, our good friend Ioannis Pagonis who is the chief waiter brought out a massive platter containing some of our catch which had been simply grilled on the open charcoal. Served with a Greek salad and washed down with a large glass of white wine this was a meal to die for! May I extend our warmest thanks to Dimitris for our trip and all the staff at Stamatis for a most memorable experience. You can fly to Skiathos direct from Bristol airport during the summer season though you have to fly to Athens and then across to the Island in the winter months. You can contact Dimitris at:gioldasis.skiathos@gmail.com Facebook skiathosfishingtrips

Tricia said: “My husband is really into fishing so when I was diagnosed with cancer for a second time I decided I would give it a go and applied to Casting for Recovery – my friend had seen it in a magazine – and it was wonderful. I had just finished my treatment and was wearing a wig and a bandana as I’d lost my hair, but I really enjoyed it. I didn’t want the weekend to end.

“I carried on fishing after the course and got

involved in Casting for Recovery, helping them with fundraising. I got better at angling and the ladies that run the charity kept suggesting that I try out for the England team. I finally put myself forward for a qualifier at Eyebrook Reservoir [in Rutland] on 31 August and I came eighth.” That eighth place means that Tricia will fish for her country at the International Fly Fishing Association match on the River Don near Inverurie from 22-25 June. Director of Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland, Jill Grieve, said: “We are proud to have inspired Patricia to carry on fishing after her time on retreat. Her achievement is a real testament not just to the beautiful sport of fly fishing, but also to the joy our retreats so clearly bring to lady participants. “I know that everyone involved in Casting for Recovery wishes Patricia well as she goes to represent England in competition and we look forward to hearing how she does – we’re sure she will love every minute.” For more information go to www.castingforrecovery. org.uk or contact Jill Grieve on 0207 840 9223/ 07710 651641 or jill-grieve@countryside-alliance.org

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Early cod is the big news on the east coast with some good fish already caught early September as you can see with some nice fish caught on Sophie Lea this will get better and better as we move through the to Autumn and I really think it will be a bumper year for us on the east coast .Also plenty of bass through September and now is the time they start to shoal up and start moving offshore. Rays are now showing

again in ever increasing numbers so the mix of fish to catch will be exciting for all our boat anglers as most of you no we now have a big catamaran so if you find the rolling around on a mono hull a bit to much for your tummy it might be worth trying out a catamaran and just see how much more room and stability you get it just could transform your boat fishing pleasure.

BRIXHAM REPORT A Great start to September on board Brixham based charter boats "Optimist" " Just Fishing" and "Kellys Heroes" At the beginning of the month we all fished the Skerries Banks and at last are starting to catch plump Plaice, along with a few Small Eyed Ray on the drift, best of which on "Just Fishing" was just shy if 9lb as can be seen in the photo. Whilst on "Optimist" they were spot on with the Rays providing good sport boating several Blondes up to 11lb (by "Optimist" skipper Nigel Lihou) with Small eyed and Spotted also putting in an appearance just look at the pictures, we have also had undulate but sorry returned with no picture. Out on the wrecks the fishing continues to be steady. Typical sized Pollock for this time of year up to 10lb with a few Bass on the bigger tides. We're still catching Cod and Ling on Lures and drifting with Mackerel Flappers, best Ling so far this month was caught on "Just Fishing" by Mike Smith weighing 16lb, although we have lost a number of better fish. At Anchor

we have had a nice run of Black Bream making some good sport on lighter gear, best so far was taken on "Just Fishing" by Skipper Simon Fisher at 3lb 15oz. Along with the Bream we've also had loads of Conger Eel around 25-30lb mark with a few larger ones being boated, biggest so far this month was 65lb 5oz caught on "Just Fishing" by Jason Hemmings. "Optimist has had some spectacular fishing on the Skerries Banks with a good variety of species coming aboard and customers wanting to return for more with days being extended to cater for our anglers. "Kellys Heroes" Has been fishing wrecks and Banks with a similar success rate to the others all trips producing some good fish. The Brixham based charter boats are booking up well for the remainder of 2015 and well into 2016, all the skippers are friendly, helpful and will go the extra mile to ensure a great fishing trip.

Use Bungee Spongee速 for a fun, quick and convenient way to clean your hands, boat, equipment, car, plane, spaceship and anything else you can think of. The Bungee Spongee速 is an extremely strong and long lasting product compiling of a strong plastic hook which will not rust, attached to approximately 2 meters of shock cord/bungee cord to help with drag when pulling it back in the boat and tide. This is then passed through the expanded foam or sponge. It is a very strong material and will last a long time. The Bungee Spongee速 is all held together with clear high tear resistant silicone discs which will not mark the skipper's boats.

NEW REPORT EXAMINES ECONOMICS OF ANGLING VS COMMERCIAL FISHING

allocations between sectors.

UK - A report aimed at helping the seafood industry and policy makers to evaluate and compare the economic importance of sea angling and commercial fishing has been published, with the hope that it will provide a blueprint for future comparisons of the sectors which has previously been a thorny issue on both sides.

Chief Economist at Seafish, Hazel Curtis, said: “Economists are frequently asked to compare the economic importance of the commercial fishing sector to the economic importance of recreational sea angling, but for economic impact analysis of different activities, comparing like with like can be very challenging.

A workshop that included Government, economics experts and representatives from the commercial fishing and angling sectors, was held following another report published last year which made comparisons on sea bass fishing in Sussex.

“Static analysis about the value of sectors does not inform adequately about the likely effects of policy change or reallocation of fishing rights between commercial and recreational fishing, so the purpose of our report is to provide policy makers with appropriate analysis and ensure they feel confident with the economic information to make informed decisions.

The report, issued by Seafish on behalf of UKFEN, evaluates and recommends different economic analysis methods for comparing the value of industry sectors and informing policy questions about allocation of resources to achieve efficiency or fairness of distribution of quotas. It also looks at other important elements, such as resource allocation, economic efficiency and distributional policy, distinguishing between political objectives, social justice, fairness, benefit maximisation and economic efficiency. All sectors involved in the workshop have backed the report, including the angling sector, representatives from government, and the commercial fishing sector. Crucially, when comparing sectors, the UKFEN report found that while total value estimates give a snapshot of actual relative contributions to the economy, the results do not represent the likely consequences of stopping a particular activity.

Eric Green bass specimen winner

Aaron Fincham codling pevensey bay East Sussex

The report points out that even when a study finds that more jobs and economic benefits arise from one type of fishing, rather than another, this finding reveals nothing about the marginal benefits of shifting stock

Seafish organised and funded the workshop, with the intention that the report could provide guidance on valid methods to compare sector or industry values and highlight comparisons that are invalid or wrongly interpreted, ultimately to help inform decisions that affect the fishing industry.

“We hope that the report will help ensure that the most appropriate analyses are prepared given the policy context and will reduce time and effort debating the merits of the economic analyses so that there could be more time to spend on the wider policy debate itself”. Dale Rodmell, of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO), contributed to the workshop and said: “Too often inappropriate comparisons of value are made within poorly defined contexts or for divisive purposes. This report is a welcome contribution that sheds light and understanding on what is meant by different measures of economic value and on how they should be applied.” Nigel Horsman, of BASS, the Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society, attended the workshop and said the report is “an excellent piece of work that deserves very careful reading by everyone involved in fisheries management, policy setting, stakeholders and anyone else with an interest in the subject. I hope it is read slowly and fully as I found important statements throughout. There is much to be gained from taking action to achieve better fisheries management.”

SILVER SPRAY REPORT It’s been a fairly quiet month for us down in Poole with a whole week of hard easterly winds followed by the same again of south westerly. Some of the most enjoyable fishing lately has been along the sea front from Poole to Hengistbury head using the light tackle. We have had a few days turn up over 20 different species. Something I haven’t seen much of as a skipper is trigger fish and they been making an appearance taking the plaice baits on the sand. Almost tropical to look at they also fight like a bream on steroids. Out further off there is still plenty of tope

and rays at anchor with all 5 species of rays making regular appearances. We are still picking off the bass with live baits such as scad and mackerel although I think they will start to thin out soon and we shall have to move onto pout. Only two more trips over to Alderney to go and it will be the winter season, although if you look outside today you would think it had arrived already. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

www.snowbee.co.uk ANGLERS CELEBRATE GREEN LIGHT FOR £4.2BN LONDON 'SUPER SEWER' Construction of London's new £4.2bn 'super sewer' will start next year following the confirmation of independent investors to finance and deliver the scheme. Anglers, environmental groups and river users joined Ministers and business leaders in celebrating the news - recognising that the Thames Tideway Tunnel is needed urgently to tackle the issue of discharges of untreated sewage into the river and ensure the capital's sewerage system is fit for the 21st century. The tidal Thames is home to more than 120 species of fish, tens of thousands of which have perished in recent decades in periodic pollution incidents including the catastrophic 450,000 ton sewage overflow of June 2011 which affected West London and caused a major fish kill. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13693265 On Monday, Bazalgette Tunnel Limited, a new special-purpose company appointed to take the project forward, received its licence from Ofwat as a new regulated utilities business, separate from Thames Water. At the same time, Thames Water announced a much lower than predicted cost of the project to customers. The company's current average household bill for water and wastewater of around £370 per year is now expected to remain at that level, before inflation, until at least 2020. The Angling Trust has been working hard with local angling and environmental groups, including our colleagues in the Thames Angler's Conservancy, to press for the Tunnel to be be built as soon as possible. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: "Anglers have been at the forefront of the campaign for a cleaner river and an end to the fish kills that have blighted this great and improving tideway. As the national governing body for recreational fishing the Angling Trust was proud to a founder member of the Thames Tunnel Now coalition that pressed for the building of this much needed 'Supersewer' and we are delighted that is finally going ahead." Martin Baggs, CEO of Thames Water, said: "It's no exaggeration to say this is a truly momentous day for London and the River Thames. I want to thank everyone who has played a part in getting us this far. It's a historic achievement and I look forward to supporting Bazalgette Tunnel Limited in ensuring the project is delivered safely, on time and to budget. The strong competition for both construction and financing has driven down costs for our more than five million bill payers. "Our current annual bills already include £7 for the tunnel and this will eventually rise to a total of £20 to £25, before inflation. This is sharply down from the original maximum estimate of £70 to £80 set

HTO SLOW

four years ago. The really good news is that cheaper finance and other efficiencies mean that this hugely important piece of national infrastructure can be built while keeping our bills at or around their current level, before inflation, for at least the next five years." Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: "The Thames Tideway Tunnel will be a fantastic example of world leading British engineering at its best. It will also boost economic growth across the capital, generate more than 9,000 jobs and bring huge benefits to the natural environment by protecting the Thames from sewage. "Today's announcement brings us one step closer to finally modernising London's ageing sewerage system. In the 21st century, the most dynamic city in the world should not have a river that is polluted by sewage every time there is heavy rainfall." Andy Mitchell, CEO at 'Tideway', the delivery organisation for the Thames Tideway Tunnel, now owned by Bazalgette Tunnel Limited, added: "Our task over the next seven years is quite simply to make sure London has a sewerage system capable of meeting the capital's modern-day needs. Everyone in the team is excited and can't wait to get started. "It's not just about cleaning up the river, important though that is. Nor is it just about building a tunnel. It's about making sure we transform the River Thames, making it central to the capital's wider social and economic well-being. This is a once in a generation opportunity and we are determined to raise the bar in every way, not least the way we treat local communities potentially most directly affected by construction works.

HTO SLOW AND OSOI JIGS Relatively new to Northern Europe, the rise of slow pitch jigging has been rapidly gaining momentum for the past few years in other parts of the globe. A small hardcore of UK anglers have been using the technique for the last couple of years and have racked up over 30 UK saltwater species between them. Slow jigging is attractive to many more species than traditional jigging methods and not only can you target bottom feeding species, but also those which aren’t feeding at all! When the jigs are falling in the horizontal position is usually when hits are triggered and it’s this flash of the belly of a dying falling fish that will tempt even the laziest and most lethargic prey into action.

"Through our commitment to remove excavated materials by barge, the opportunity to rejuvenate the river as a transport artery will be a particular focus for us."

HTO brings you a small selection of the best fish catching colours in sizes that can be worked vertically at all states of the tide.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will stem the flows from the 34 'combined sewer overflows' (CSOs) identified by the Environment Agency as the most polluting. The £4.2 billion project will connect up with the Lee Tunnel. This has already been constructed by Thames Water to take wastewater otherwise destined for the river to Beckton sewage works, East London, from early in 2016.

HTO Slow Jigs Available in 60g, 80g and 120g the HTO Slow jigs are ideal for smaller tides, over slacker states of tide and for inshore work.

Along with Thames Water's recent expansion of the five sewage treatment works on the tidal Thames, the two tunnels will greatly reduce the 39 million tonnes of untreated sewage that currently overflow into the tidal River Thames via CSOs in a typical year.

HTO Osoi Jigs Available in 150g and 200g the HTO Osoi Jigs are designed for deeper faster moving water. To find out more about the HTO Slow and Osoi jigs, visit http://www.tronixfishing.com/hto/ or visit www.tronixfishing.com/store-locator to find a stockist near you.

The venue fished was the narrow Dee channel downstream of the Blue Bridge, on an unseasonably cold, breezy evening over high water. After a slow start, England Ladies International Heather Lindfield located the feeding flounders and eels in her peg to win Zone A and the match with a length to weight total of 4140 gms which included the best flounder of the match, a specimen of 680 gms (39 cms). Crab was her bait of choice. Meanwhile, John Waugh fished the first peg in the downstream Zone B for runner-up position and caught two big eels in his 3090 gms bag. John’s second place moves him into the series lead for the first time. The points have closed up in the pairs championship with the Lindfields in command as we approach the penultimate match at Perch Rock on October 25th. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. Heather Lindfield (Greasby), 7 flounders, 5 eels, 414 pts. (Zone A) 2. John Waugh (Wallasey), 7 flounders, 6 eels, 309 pts. (Zone B) 3. This year’s event saw a repeat of last year with 8 competitors signing on again coupled with sunny spells but with slightly choppy, fairly clear sea conditions. The match kicked off with the first fish of the day falling to Aaron Chambers with a weever. Unfortunately, during the last junior match, the junior secretary painfully ended a 20 year-long clean record in unhooking several hundred of these venomous fish for the juniors, and received a nasty sting. Thankfully Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw always carries a flask of hot water in case of such events and the injury was treated quickly with no ill effects. Members of the public are warned to be aware of these fish as stings can cause problems if left untreated. Thankfully this was to be the only specimen during the match and James Lawrence soon took an early lead with a string of blennies. This was to be short lived however when Eden Lynham landed a small bass and followed this up with a sizeable mackerel taking him into the lead. Several fish followed with 6 out of the 8 weighing in flounder, weever, pollack, pout, bass, mackerel and tompot and common blenny (shanny). Lynham extended his lead with another mackerel and this proved to give him a very comfortable win; a great improvement on last year’s event in which he won the wooden spoon prize! After an early lead James Lawrence maintained a second placing while new member Charlie Harrison secured a third with two flounders.

Honiton SAC Report from Mike Spiller of Honiton Sea Angling Club on the above competition held on the 28-8-15 The open Seaton carnival shore comp was held last week on Seaton beach. Conditions were not ideal but some really good fish were recorded at the 11pm weigh-in. Fish caught were grey mullet, golden grey mullet, mackerel, scad, bass, smoothound, pout, huss, plaice and doggies. It was nice to see many fish like the huss, doggies and smoothound kept alive and returned to fight another day. With an entry of 48 it will make £50 for the carnival funds. First place with a huss of 9-11-0 and doggie of 1-15-0 for Simon Skinner of Seaton sea anglers. Runner up went to Steve Fowles of West Bay sac with a bass and doggie combination. Third spot was Scott Rice of the host club Honiton SAC with a grey mullet and golden grey mullet.

An angler was recovered from the sea off Prawle Point in Devon on 19th September after his drifting dinghy was spotted. Falmouth Coastguard was contacted by volunteers at the National Coastwatch Institute at Prawle Point today after they spotted a drifting dinghy with fishing rods but noone on board. The Coastguard requested the launch of Salcombe RNLI lifeboats and Hope Cove lifeboat and the Coastguard rescue helicopter. Torbay Coastguard Rescue Team was also sent. An elderly gentleman was recovered from the sea near the boat and taken aboard the lifeboat for medical treatment from the lifeboat crew and the winchman from the Coastguard helicopter.

WEYMOUTH ANGLING SOCIETY OPEN, AUGUST 29TH, ABBOTSBURY, 4PM - 10PM The sea was calm after a couple of days of strong winds so still a bit of colour in the water which was promising for the entrants on the day . Most set off and fished beyond the Dragons Teeth to escape the crowds that had turned up for the huge mackerel shoals that could be seen in all directions. The surface was alive with fish even a Salmon or Sea Trout was seen leaping out of the water 20yrds from the shore. Also seen by many a Sunfish which was mistaken for a Shark at first as the big fin kept appearing near the Mackerel shoals. Cod had been caught prior to the match during the ebb but unfortunately we didn`t see any for the flood but the Smoothounds were present along with, Pout, Poor Cod, Plaice, Bass, Conger ,Dogfish, Gurnard and Scad . Results; Winner, Ben Bradstock, 19lb 14 1/2oz

5 juniors also took part and a big thanks to Chris Chappell at Seaton angling centre for donating a junior prize. The juniors was won by Archie Sweetland of Beer and District. Archie recorded a doggie and a scad. Second spot went to Archie Howell with a grey mullet. Third junior went to Archie Hawker with mackerel. After the event the beach was swept by the organizers to check for litter and I am very pleased to say, there was no angling rubbish left after the event. Thanks to everyone for supporting the local comp and thanks to everyone that travelled down to fish the event.

Sea Angling News, October 2015

ALDERNEY REPORT BY MARK HARDING

Shore Sport Hit and miss can only describe the last four weeks. We had a really poor spell at the top of the large spring tides where everything turned off and fishing was appalling from both the shore and boat. However since then it has been ok. There has been some good Bass around to 7lb+ falling to bait and lures. Big Mackerel baits paying dividends in the harbour especially in rough weather but lures proving successful too with either soft or hard plastics nailing fish to 5lb 8oz. Some good sessions too with up to a dozen or so fish caught at times. Pollacking has generally been well rewarded with fish up to 7lb caught, again on lures with weedless soft plastics most effective. Baits fished on the bottom now starting to yield Sole, the odd Red Mullet and plenty of small Black and Couches Bream. We’re yet to start to target the big stuff but Matt Smith did have a go for the Tope and was rewarded with a 35lb fish whilst Adam Barnes alongside took a Turbot on his ‘Tope’ bait! Plenty of Mullet around too so generally we’re ok for some reasonable sport. Boat Sport Looks like finally we have some Bass, the week of this report there was some good fish caught aboard Valkyrie which comes all the way from Langstone. They also managed some good flatfish too in the way of Turbot and Brill. Anchoring has paid off around the reefs for a whole host of mixed fish – it’s awesome this time of year on the ‘pick’. I won’t bore you with the details ;-) Alderney Angling Lure Species Hunt 2015 This event is now 3 years old and generates as much fun as it did at its inception. A fantastic weekend that saw 26 species caught on lures in a 33 hour period caught by the competing anglers. A few changes were made to previous years, firstly it was extended to 33 hours of fishing, this was just as well for some as there was a late flurry in the last couple of hours and the other major change was the splitting of the field so the locals and visitors had their own 1st, 2nd, 3rd places to compete for which each received £300, £200 and £100 in cash prizes. A massive thanks to all our sponsors for donating wonderful prizes which meant that each winning section mentioned below walked of with over £100 tackle prizes each. Much thanks to the following: Tronixpro, Alderney Angling, Fiiish, YGK, Majorcraft, The Lure Forum, Hart, Marukyu, Sunline, HTO, Delalande and Seaspin. The weekends forecast wasn’t the best but we got lucky there, Saturdays rain cleared early but remained pretty windy with winds around force 6 most of the time, it did ease overnight and in to Sunday morning before increasing to a 4 to 5 eventually during the day but it took far longer to come back than the forecasts suggested – so pleased for the lads fishing! Fishing was slow going Saturday as a few bankers were slow to show, Pollack being one of those and the Gobies were proving elusive too. But alas it did come together for those targeting the number of species as fish seemed to be found in flurries whilst those targeting the longest fish in the relevant sections set their stall out to target their larger quarry. Longest round fish of the event fell to John Copeland who took advantage of the drop in wind by staying out all Saturday night plugging for Bass, he got his rewards with a 58cm fish. Photographed on a card and tape measure he was able to return the fish which is the case with this event, 99% of fish go back. The most unusual lure caught fish (there were a few!) had to be Tronixpro MD and owner George Cunningham who managed to catch a Couches Sea Bream, awesome effort! As mentioned 26 species of fish were caught, which included all 6 possible Wrasse species found around the UK, on a lure in the 33 hours, take a look at this little lot and digest: Pollack, Ballan Wrasse, Corkwing Wrasse, Goldsinny Wrasse, Baillons Wrasse, Cuckoo Wrasse, Rock Cooks Wrasse, Scad, Pout, Smelt, Leopard Spotted Goby, Giant Goby, Bass, Garfish, Tompot Blenny, Dragonet, Sand Goby, Rock Goby, Black Goby, Shanny, Whiting, Black Bream, Long Spined Scorpion Fish, Mackerel, Thick Lipped Mullet and Couches Sea Bream. One of the highlights for me is seeing the anglers return, and even those locally, whom just a few years back solely lure fishing was totally alien. They have crafted their skills and proven themselves in events like this to the point they become winners. It’s awesome to see and I feel so privileged to be part of that evolvement. And so on to those winners: Visitors Most Species 1st £300 cash - George Cunningham 11 species 2nd £200 cash - Spencer Hunt 8 species 3rd £100 cash - Aaron Bray 7 species Locals Most Species 1st £300 cash – Dicky Smith 14 species 2nd £200 cash – Darren Braby 14 species 3rd £100 cash – Marcus Odoli 9 species Longest Length of Fish of registered Species - Dicky Smith 304cm Longest Bass – John Copeland 58cm Longest Garfish – Darren Braby/Spencer Hunt 72cm Longest Pollack – Adam Barnes 56cm Longest Ballan Wrasse – George Cunningham/Andy Black 42cm Longest Mullet – Michael Bohan 54cm Longest Round Fish - John Copeland Bass 58cm Most Unusual Fish – George Cunningham Couches Sea Bream Special Prize (Most effort/Least fish) – Laurie Brown Congratulations to all those that won prizes and many thanks to all those that took part which make the weekend so much fun. Look out for poster details which we will launch in the next fortnight for next years dates and packages. Hopefully we’ll see you there too!

Alderney Angling Shore League 2015 – Best Ballan Wrasse (Breakwater) After what seemed an eternity of a break it was good to get back to a League match. On the face of it this was easy – simply catch the Best Ballan Wrasse you can and hope its bigger than anyone elses! Its easy eh? Well it is when you have plenty of bait and fishing in sunshine, a little bit harder when bait was I short supply coupled with lashings of the wet stuff falling from the sky!! A brave 13 turned out in full ‘waterproof’ regalia to do battle. Two hours in Marcus was leading the way with a 3lb+ fish and Dicky just ounces behind. With the best of the tide to come they looked to fish bigger whilst the others still had a good opportunity to nail just that one decent fish required. The next hour proved eventful with several fish being caught, the cream of the fish falling to Darren, James and Wayne. Not sure at what point Darren caught his but James was elated at a PB Ballan of 4lb 13oz and whilst he started to dream of his first League win those illusions were shattered just 10 minutes later as Wayne bagged a fish of 5lb+. Then with dark skies and gloomy weather Mr Ballan stopped playing ball and it was all over. Congratulations to Wayne for wining his first match! Match results: Wayne Cosheril - 5lb 1oz James Clarke - 4lb 13oz Darren Braby - 4lb 1oz Marcus Odoli – 3lb 4oz Dicky Smith - 3lb 3oz Scott Audoire - 2lb 12oz Fieona Cosheril - 2lb 4oz Matt Smith - 1lb 10oz Adam Salmon – 1lb 9oz Alistair Walters – 14oz James and Matt played their jokers. It’s another month till the next match due to the Lure Species Comp on the 12/13th. Not many booked in so plenty of really good prizes up for grabs so get booked in, details at the shop. Saturday 26th September is our next match, a pegged match on the Breakwater. It’s the longest length of fish caught during the duration. Booking is from 14.15 – 14.45 at peg 37. You can fish inside or outside the Breakwater. Cards to be signed, fish to be witnessed and measured by nearest angler. Ballan Wrasse limited to first 6 measured and signed on the card. Pegs 37 to 55 to be drawn at booking in. One rod, max 3 hooks. No size limits. All species. League Table James and Wayne were the big climbers this match – James’ joker played at the right time – not the same can be said of his team member! 12 Matches down now – 7 to go!! Top 4 win a rod or reel to the value of £100, top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and for the winner a trip to Norway (or somewhere warmer if preferred!). Best 12 matches from the 19 count. This month’s Boat report and outlook The local charter boats ‘Anglo Dawn’ (Chris Roberts), ‘Outlaw of Dartmouth’ (Owen Mallia) and ‘Samuel Irvin 3’ (Ian Noble), and who all send me regular reports of what their anglers are catching. With the onset of the Autumnal Equinox the weather tends to get a little unsettled but when they get out they all say there are quality fish to be had and the catches have been very good. Mid Channel wrecks - This time of year they’re mainly targeting Cod, Pollack and Ling. The Cod have thinned in numbers. Most that are being caught are in the 7-9lb range but there are bigger fish to be had. The Ling are here in reasonable numbers. The best this month was caught in the Torbay Sea Angling Festival (report above) The Pollack are still around in numbers as well and some big ones, well in the teens are still being caught. Some nice Bass are showing as well on the wrecks. The biggest I’ve heard of was a very nice specimen for Wayne Carter of 13lb 14oz caught from a private boat out of Teignmouth. ‘Skerries Banks’ - Further inshore the ‘Skerries Banks’ is fishing well for Plaice. Reasonable numbers are being reported and hopefully this will continue into the next couple of months. The sizes seem to be a bit smaller this year and a lot of anglers are returning the smaller ones to fight another day but there was a beauty of 5lb 12oz 8dr caught by a Welsh angler on a stag do! The Ray are around in numbers with some nice Smalleyed and Blonde Rays coming to the net. The best Blonde Ray was a 29lb 11oz specimen for Brixham angler Rob Caunter fishing from his own private boat. For the most up to date catch reports from our area please visit www.fishingdartmouth.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, October 2015

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT by James Wigglesworth

Well we’re in what I consider to be one of the best months for fishing here in the Bristol Channel. September is typically a month when anything can be caught and true to form we have already seen a double figure cod from the grounds close to Watchet. This came to Tom Wright on his private boat and weighed in at a respectable 16lb. Shaun Anning skipper of Seafire II has been reporting large catches of smooth hounds as well as thornback rays and as we reported last month some decent size bass in shore. This last week or so have seen the smooth hounds really switch on again from Watchet all the way down to Minehead and beyond, I dare say as they start to make their annual migration back out of the channel again. The ray fishing continues to provide excellent sport to those wanting to target them. The Minehead boats are still continuing their trips to the favoured marks west of Porlock. These areas are still throwing up some lovely bull huss well into double figures and the rewards are there to be had for those who favour smaller baits in the shape of bream and triggers etc. Porlock bay can be a great area at this time of year as in the past we have seen john dory, red mullet and all the other weird and wonderful summer species. Fingers crossed it throws up a few surprises in the next few weeks. Further west still the tope fishing is

still going well with John Barbeary skipper Bluefin II of Ilfracombe accounting for some fine specimens. This north Devon port offers a wide variety of fishing possibilities this time of year wether it be a species trip to Lundy Island, mid channel toping or inshore reefing for bass and pollock. One recent trip saw Minehead charter boat Alykat Too head down this way on one of the skippers ‘Magical Mystery Tours’. That day they accounted for 15 species and everybody aboard went home with a nice bass for the plate. Planned trips out to the blue shark grounds have been hampered this month by less than ideal conditions but Watchet boat Reel Deal skippered by Dan Hawkins decided to have a reccy to see if he could find a porbeagle shark or two. And that’s what he did. They managed to boat two, the biggest falling to Phil ‘proper bo’ Lewis with a fine fish of 151lb. Bookings are being taken by all of our skippers for next year already. Wether you want a short top of the tide trip or a 12hr day sharking they will be able to accommodate all of your needs. Dates are filling up fast so book soon to avoid disappointment. Also the book is now open for the Minehead cod comp in December. See Craig on Minehead harbour to confirm your spot. Until next month..... Tight Lines!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle The past month has seen things rolling along nicely in the Bristol Channel. The much anticipated autumn run of codling has yet to make any big impact as of yet. With just a handful of codling sporadically showing up from anywhere from the Severn bridge to Porlock weir. A little thought about this. It could well be that the rod hours are not being put into them. This is certainly the case around the Minehead area and the lack of lugworm sales have reflected this. I'm sure with a bit of attention over the coming month plenty of codling will be caught. I'm sure and I'm not alone in thinking we are on the brink of an impressive cod season with quality rather than quantity the flavour of things to come. Besides the codling there are plenty of options to focus on. Big congers, bass, rays, bull huss plus the odd smoothound remain about. Whiting numbers are looking healthy with masses of pin whiting and and an encouraging amount of 25-30cm fish showing up. These bigger samples seem to be a tad earlier than normal . But with the sea temperature running 2 degrees cooler than last year this could explain it. But who knows?. Reports of bass in the 4-7lb have continued to come in steadily over the past couple of weeks especially on the bigger tides over high water and over low water on neap tides. There has been some good old conger fun and games recently with rods pulled out of stands, small fish being attacked on the hook and just the heads left on the hooks after the eels have chomped the tasty bit off !!! Within hours of tapping up this report Steve Liddel owner of West coast tackle and Angling ( my boss ) had an inkling that he would find a fat old eel on one of his favoured marks around Minehead and within two casts had a conger in the region of 30lb+ on the bank. Fishing alone it was a bit of a mare getting it off the ground to weigh it, but with a quick call and a bit of assistants from fellow angler Nick Sherrin who legged it down to help, only to have the scales malfunction !! What a bummer !! It's not every day you manage to land a decent size eel and this was the biggest eel Steve has landed from the shore . Being no stranger to big eels caught on the boats over the years a good well educated weight of about 30lb was given. The prospects for the month ahead are very good indeed . October is widely said to be the best month of the Bristol Channel calendar . With fish concentrations at the max as well as the species available, as the summer/winter fish ebb and flow to their new seasonal pastures. The area around the Severn bridges will continue to hot up with codling catches along with sole flounder and bass. Moving down to the Clevedon area, codling, congers, Rays

Steve Liddel had one thing on his mind one evening and that was to nail a big eel and that's exactly what he did . A pair of 6/0 hooks packed with unwashed squid was the way forward and it was tamed on the new Anyfish anywhere "Match Pro" rod.

North Devon angler Michael Taylor went in search of a late hound from a local mark and was rewarded with a fine 11lber

Simon Lancastle with a fine Bristol Channel bass of 7lb 3oz

and whiting will be the main targets . This is also the same sort of thing to expect from the Weston/Brean area. The lower light at Burnham can see some excellent sport from the codling along with rays ,conger and bass, fishing over Low water on the neap tides this mark seems to produce a bonus size cod around the double figures this time of year. The reef systems from from Hinkley point to Watchet hold many secrets this time of year and if you are lucky enough to unlock it and get it right A double figure cod, bass, ray , and conger are all Potentially one cast away. Dunster beach and the golf links beach at Minehead will produce plenty of codling to those using worm baits, fresh lug will undoubtably give you the edge but rag and black lug will also do the biz with a bit of crab thrown in. Plenty of bass and those big congers plus sizeable whiting are on the cards all along here. I would suggest this area to be the hot spot this coming month for some of the best high water fishing in the channel on the medium to big tides. Weed can be an issue at times but fish though it and the rewards are good. Minehead gas works beach and the low water area towards white mark are worth a shout if you are still looking for a small eyed ray, you never know a blonde ray could be lurking close by along with the eels and codling. Bossington and Porlock weir can literally turn up anything this time of year ,and something abnormal would have to be going on for someone to walk off the beach without catching at least a few fish. I hope the next month treats many of you to some good catches. One thing is for sure you won't catch anything by not getting a bait in the water. So get out there and make the most of it. Tight lines & happy hunting…

LAST LAUGH CHARTERS By John Skeggs With autumn upon us it is time to stock up with squid, cuttle and black lug, ready to target those prime winter fish. There have already been several reports of Cod being caught in the Western Solent and South of the Needles. Should they show up like they did in the channel this summer, we could be in for a blinder. The bass continue to be caught in good numbers with the average size being 5-6lb. Last month it was mackerel galore! This month they have been difficult to find at times. Dolphin sands, back of the shingles, horse shoe bank and 9 mile banks, I have had reports of plenty of rays along with the odd turbot. A recent venture aboard “Last Laugh” to an offshore wreck produced some quality ling, with several fish around the20lb mark. Tight Lines John Skeggs (Last Laugh).

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage rue to form this month has seen a real down turn in the amount of fish being caught, and with a week of Easterlies that also didn't help. We have had to do a few more miles to find some decent fish with the off shore banks proving the miles were worth it, with Bass up to 9lb and some fine Undulates Blondes and small eye ray. There was also a run of Tope at the end of the ebb along with a few Bull Huss, the problem with fishing this area is that it can only do it on small tides. Fishing the inshore marks on the bigger tides managed to produce a few Bream with the occasional Smoothound and Conger, the other important thing is that we did see a few early Cod and Codling that came on a variety of baits from crab worm and squid. I hope this marks the start of a very good Cod season for the Needles Just another reminder how to enter the British Cod Championships. NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, October 2015

Port Report Boats returning from Channel Island trips in September were still enjoying very good catches of cod on the wrecks. This year the cod have made what has otherwise been a very difficult ‘summer’ with windy weather conditions and scarcity of other species into an excellent year. Usually cod have left ‘our’ area by late July or mid August so for them to still be here in September is extremely unusual. As this report is being written (20th September) the Weymouth Charter boats have not been near the wrecks for a good two weeks so we do not know if the cod are still out there. Weymouth’s inshore fishing during September has been marked by the total absence of plaice in the West Shambles area. We are told by divers that the pea mussel beds that were up to three foot thick last year have totally disappeared. Without the mussels to feed on our plaice have not arrived much to the disappointment of everyone. We are obviously all hoping that the mussel beds will re-establish themselves but the reason for their disappearance is not known. Although the plaice have gone the bream are here with some excellent catches being made. They are no-where near as prolific over the mussel bed grounds as in previous years but they are on the usual West Shambles marks with some excellent fishing to be found ‘out over’ which is the old local saying for the rough ground marks south of the Shambles Bank. Apart from the bream there are plenty of huss about along with a few conger. The real bonus is in the amount of undulate and blonde rays about on a whole variety of general reef/bank marks. The undulate rays tend to be into double figures so this is a great fish to catch and release. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland has provided some very good fishing some days whilst proving difficult on other occasions. The rays, as ever, are extremely localised and whilst one boat may catch over 50 rays in one session, as happened aboard Chris Tett’s Peace and Plenty in the recent Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition (WIBAC), another boat just a few metres away can catch virtually nothing. Whilst on the subject of the WIBAC it was great to see Richard Ferre emerge as the very popular overall winner in the five day event which saw ling to 20lb, Pollack to 12lb 8oz, bream to 4lb, undulate ray to 16lb 10oz, blonde ray to 22lb and brill to 6lb 2oz. the undoubted highlight was the 86lb conger caught aboard Chris Tett’s Peace and Plenty which broke the existing WIBAC record and earned local hotelier Dave Bennett an well deserved £1,000 cash win. David has supported these events and the Weymouth Charter Fleet for many years so it was great to see him get something back after all he has put into the local angling scene.

at anchor. The anchor sessions targeting bream will produce dogfish, huss, conger, rays, gurnard, pollack, pout, cod and maybe even an elusive plaice. The WIBAC event has a ‘Species Day’ in which anglers are to catch just one of each species. Three anglers from three different boats tied on 14 species each which just shows how many different types of fish can turn up during anchoring sessions when the appropriate different techniques are used to target different species.

Michael Sands from Southampton with a very impressive 2lb 3oz scad.

Sean McSeveney from Weymouth. 22lb blonde ray. October also sees good catches of conger made from the popular Deep Hole trips. These trips are fished on the gentlest of tides with the ‘hole’ just off Portland diving down to 120 metres. Although of no interest to the light tackle angler, there are still a few hardy souls who enjoy a tussle with a decent size fish in deep water. The ‘Deep Hole’ is far deeper than anywhere else in the English Channel until the Hurd Deep is reach 7 miles north of Alderney and is just a 45 minutes steam from Weymouth Harbour giving plenty of fishing time.

Bass - Fish On II

The other rough ground marks such as the 3 mile and 7 mile reefs will be just as productive on the right tides as the ‘hole’ but can be fished in bigger tides as the area is much shallower in the 45m to 55metre range. The Shambles Bank, which produced some days of very good turbot and brill fishing in September, will be at its best in October. Bass are often found on the Bank especially on the ebb tide and live launce, easily ‘feathered up’ from the east end of the Bank and then fished hard on the bottom on a long flowing trace can account for these three species plus the occasional pollack, cod and blonde ray.

Bream - Fish On II

Undulate - Fish On II

Anglers enjoying light tackle fishing from small craft find October to be a very lively month along the Portland Breakwaters and Portland itself. Wrasse, pollack, garfish, bass and many other species are to be found close in. Weymouth and Portland’s great strength is that is can offer sheltered fishing conditions for small craft in virtually any wind direction. There’s plenty of good fishing to look forward to in October and we charter skippers look forward to welcoming you aboard to enjoy the very fine inshore fishing associated with October. As ever, thank you all for supporting the Weymouth Charter Fleet.

Turbot - Fish On II

Tope - Fish On II

Bassing has been fair with the best fish coming from the Portland Race on live mackerel. The three fish limit has had absolutely no effect as catches are well below what is allowed. Today, for example, charter boats reported having three to fifteen bass in total on their boats with up to 10 anglers onboard. October is usually a better month for bass both here and over in Alderney for those vessels with a couple of remaining trips to do. Expect to see reports of bigger and better catches in next month’s port report. A few cod should turn up from the bass marks on the lures, live eels or live mackerel used. Bream should also remain here throughout and be a main target fish with fishing both on the drift and

Antony Shepherd from Bristol 18lb blonde ray on his first ray trip.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Danny Hardwick

After a hectic August, for some reason the start of September was a bit slow along Chesil. Apart from the thousands of mackerel along the whole 17 mile stretch of coast line, the bottom fishing hasn’t been as productive as previous years. We did have the second biggest tides of the year at the start of the month so that could have been a factor but also the crabs played a big part in it, as they where stripping baits within 5 minutes of them being in the water. Although the fishing was hard at the start of the month there was still some good fish about. Clive Hardwick had a day down at Ferrybridge which was very slow fishing but he did manage 3 lovely triggers up to 2lb. It’s always nice to hear that a few of these seasonal visitors have graced the shingle. On the right gear these fish can be great fun. They just don’t know when to give up. Clive caught all three fish on rag tipped with tiny pieces of mackerel. He did add however that most of his triggers usually come on rag tipped with small bits of peeler crab on a good size 4 hook as these fish won’t only bite through line they will go through a wire hook like butter. Guy Spriggs had probably the best fish ever landed on Chesil, again at Ferrybridge at the start of the month. He headed down there with rays on his mind using big bluey and squid baits looking for a good undulate or two. So when he saw a 78lb 6oz stinger at the water’s edge you can only imagine his excitement, the only thing is how do you land a fish like that on your own? Luckily he had his son with him and sent him down the beach to ask another angler for some assistance to land the monster. After eventually landing the enormous stinger, they weighed the fish which beats the current British record by over 10lb. After a few quick photos the fish was released to swim off and fight another day. The western end of Chesil has been producing a lot of flatties during the day mostly smaller fish but some anglers have been lucky enough to pick up the odd bigger plaice with a few reports of fish around the 3-4lb mark. The bream fishing hasn’t really picked up at the eastern end just yet. A few fish are coming out up to 3lb but the majority are under the 1lb mark. It seems that they are there one day and gone the next. It’s all about being there on the right day at the moment. Along all the deeper water marks (Abbotsbury, Bridging camp, Ferrybridge) the codling have been building in number all month. I have heard of two double figure cod come out both of which have been just over 10lb, one from the check point area of Ferrybridge and the other from the Dragons Teeth. If you’re prepared to sit it out with big fish baits in close you have a very good chance of a big bass the whole way throughout Chesil. From now into the next month I’m waiting for the first reports of the bigger tope from the Bridging camp area. I haven’t heard of any as of yet but autumn is a good time to target them from this area. As we enter into October you stand a very good chance of a big conger or ray at night at the deeper water marks between Abbotsbury and Portland also there should be plenty of codling, bream and a few smooth hounds

about. Along the western stretches there will still be some good flatties about along with ray codling and the better whiting may also make an appearance. October as a whole is one of my favourite months for fishing, the sea temperature is still very warm so we should still have the summer species i.e. bream, triggers, gurnard ,hounds, red mullet plus the winter species should be right upon us!! Andrew George Morgan with 3 nice codling a 2 mile walk west from ferry bridge, all fish caught on whole squid and lug.

Clive Hardwick with a 2lb trigger fish.

WINNER Guy Spriggs with an epic 78lb 8oz sting ray from ferry bridge.

John Lewis with a 10lb undulate.

SCHOOL PUPILS TO TAKE PART IN FUN FISHING DAY AT LENWADE PIKE CLUB The Countryside Alliance’s Fishing 4 Schools (F4S) programme is coming to the Lenwade Pike Club near Norwich on Tuesday 6 October. Around 50 pupils from local schools will be joining in the fun and local press are invited to come along and learn all about F4S. The open day is being held in memory of Cambridgeshire sporting journalist John Humphreys, who died in 2012. A service of celebration for Mr Humphreys, who contributed to Shooting Times for more than 40 years as “Country Gun”, raised a £1,500 donation to F4S to promote angling in the East of England. F4S is a charity that introduces all types of fishing to children, aged from 10-14, who have not had the opportunity to try the sport before. The aim is to engage young people in the various aspects of fishing and related learning skills, whilst teaching them about the countryside, conservation and how water works. We see angling as a vital vehicle to both broaden education and increase confidence amongst young people.

Rod used zziplex full tournament ...Diawa black and gold 20.

During the event, which runs from 11am-2pm, the youngsters will have the opportunity to take part in the following activities: Fly tying Fly casting and fly fishing Coarse fishing Cookery demo/fish biology Knot tying Aquatic fauna and microbiology workshop - entomology Wildlife search/nature walk The activities will be delivered by Sport England Level 2 (fishing) coaches and are tailored to fit the National Curriculum. John Humphreys’ widow, Angela, said: “My husband was a schoolteacher before he became a journalist and enjoyed taking children from the schools out fishing. He started fishing himself as a child in the Fens so he would have approved of Fishing 4 Schools’ aim – to encourage more children to try the sport.” Director of F4S, and award-wining angler, Charles Jardine said: “We are very grateful to Mrs Humphreys for the generous donation and I’m sure the day will be a fitting tribute to this great writer about angling, shooting and the East Anglian countryside. Fishing 4 Schools is so important. It puts fun back into the classroom and shows children the importance of what they learn at school in daily life. “Everybody involved in the Norfolk Fishing 4 Schools Open Day is very excited by the possibilities of young people coming together at this fishery to learn about angling and related topics. We hope this will lead to more projects with Norfolk schools.“ You can find more information about F4S here - http://www. countryside-alliance.org/ca/campaigns-fishing

BURNHAM BOAT OWNERS SEA ANGLING ASSOCIATION The weather has been more settled since my last report giving us small boat owners more opportunities to get out there fishing. There seems to be an amazing amount of Thornbacks in the bay at the moment although the hounds seem to have finally moved off which is always a shame. The conger numbers are up on previous years and doggies ever present. Bass are still about, not in any great numbers but of a good average size. Once again our Smoothound comp was cancelled in August but we did get an away day comp on in Weymouth early September. This was fished as a best specimen in glorious sunshine. 1st Martin Quinn Undulate ray 11lb 6oz 81.25% 2nd Pete Watson Red Gurnard 12oz 50% 3rd Andy Georgio Cod 6lb 1oz 30% Other fish caught were mackerel, scad and turbot. Our latest comp was a species comp over 29 hours with no boundaries but all boats having to launch and retrieve from Burnham On Sea. 5 boats with 11 anglers took part with some fishing just 1 day and other hardy souls staying out all night, 1 boat even

venturing down as far as Combe Martin! In total an impressive 16 species were landed by all. 1st Andy Georgio 11 species Joint 2nd Craig Willis and Alex Wharton with 10 species. Craig also had a fine Tope estimated at over 20lb from Porlock bay. This was the clubs first species comp and judging by the feedback from members it will be repeated again next year. Fish of the month for August was won by Mark Bowden with a Bass of 5lb 11oz. Prospects for the next month look good with the first of the codling showing with numbers expected to increase as the nights draw in. With 2 comps in October hopefully this fine weather will continue and we can all get out catching some fish. Our next meeting is on Thursday 15th October at Burnham motor boat and sailing club on the sea front. Check out our facebook page Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association and website for up to date catch reports and general fishy chat.
