ANGLING ALERT LAUNCHED IN FIGHT TO TACKLE FISHERIES CRIME A cutting-edge initiative to help tackle fisheries related crime has been launched by the Angling Trust in partnership with the Environment Agency. ‘Angling Alert’ is a web-based communication tool that will provide anglers and the wider public with information on fisheries crime quickly – by text or email. Funded by rod licence income, Angling Alert signals a major step forward in crime prevention as, for the first time, the Angling Trust’s Fisheries Enforcement Support Service, the Environment Agency, police,

National Wildlife Crime Unit and other partners can share relevant information with the public in one place. Dilip Sarkar MBE, Angling Enforcement Manager, said:

Trust

“There is also an issue with fishing tackle theft and burglaries at tackle shops and fisheries, so Angling Alert can also be used to share details regarding these offences and patterns, and on occasion suspects.”

National

“Angling Alert now provides an unprecedented opportunity for the EA, National Wildlife Crime Unit and police forces nationwide to communicate with the public – and most importantly is available in a multitude of languages. “Our Fisheries Enforcement Support Service, which includes the Voluntary Bailiff Service, will be working closely with our partners to make this an effective system. The network extends nationally, so there is great scope for this to help anglers across the UK.

Chief Inspector Martin Sims, Head of the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit, said: “This is innovative and also provides a unique opportunity to communicate information concerning wildlife crime generally on a national basis. It is all about working together and any technological tool that helps in this process should really be welcomed’. Sarah Chare, Head of Fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: "Our Fisheries Enforcement successes rely heavily on information received from anglers. Angling Alert is a

fast way to let anglers know when we need specific intelligence on licence cheats and illegal fishing. "This initiative has been made possible by our rod licence funded partnership with the Angling Trust, and I urge anyone interested in tackling fisheries crime to sign up.” Angling Alert is hosted by web company Visav, providers of a number of crime awareness systems including the highly successful 'Rural Alert' endorsed by Neighbourhood Watch, Crimestoppers and the police. Subscribers to Angling Alert can filter information to be entirely relevant to their location or interests, and can also access other alert systems from the one site. It is not a tool for reporting incidents in progress which must be reported to the Agency on 0800 80 70 60, or, if concerning a crime, the police on 101 or 999 as appropriate.

'OPERATION CLEAN SEAS' CLEANS UP TROON HARBOUR A joint operation between the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Police Scotland has resulted in the detention of one fishing vessel and two further vessels prohibited from fishing, after being inspected in Troon Harbour, Scotland.

multi-agency cooperation leading to significant results in the fight to keep our seas safe. Our first priority will always be the safety of those at sea and we will continue to target those operating substandard vessels and employing unqualified crew.

Just after midday on Friday 9 September, MCA surveyors and Officers from Police Scotland boarded a number of vessels in Troon Harbour as part of ‘Operation Clean Seas’. Today’s operation – which is part of an ongoing MCA inspection policy – follows on from a number of complaints and reports received about substandard vessels, non-qualified crews and crews operating under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

‘We want to send a stark message to those who flout the laws on maritime safety. Fishing is a dangerous job. For the safety of all those working in the industry, operators must ensure their vessels are up to standard and that the crews on board are appropriately qualified.

The operation was also supported by MCA Enforcement Officers, Borders & Immigration Police, Marine Scotland and the HM Coastguard volunteers on the vessel MCA Hunter. A total of eight vessels were inspected during the five hour operation and while a number of vessels were found to meet acceptable standards some were found to fall well short of the legal requirements resulting in their detention. In addition, five improvement notices were issued for crew that were not properly trained and two crew were removed from fishing vessels for having no safety training qualifications at all. Bill Forsyth, Marine Surveyor at Glasgow Marine Office said: ‘This is yet another example of successful

‘Today’s operations has resulted in one vessel detention and two vessels prohibited from fishing and we will not rule out further inspections or activity as we continue our investigations. We are committed to working with our partner agencies to protect those at sea by stopping dangerous vessels making their way on the water, and to hold accountable those responsible.’ Inspector Alister Kelly, Community Policing Inspector for Troon, who led the involvement of Police Scotland said today: ‘We all know that fishing is a hazardous job. Poor vessels, poorly qualified crew and poor equipment makes an already dangerous job a potentially deadly venture. Keeping people safe is at the heart of what we do and this includes working with our partners to keep people safe at sea. We will continue to work successfully with the MCA and others to ensure that our local community is as safe as possible for those who live, work and visit Troon.’

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Fishing is picking up now and will continue to gradually change as the temperature starts dropping and the days get shorter whiting have made an appearance always our first Autumnal fish a few codling being caught on the piers only small fish but hopefully some bigger fish not far behind, generally end of September beginning October before we will see any numbers. Plenty of rays in varying sizes from a few pounds to late teens and plenty of them along with some nice hounds which are now making their way out of

the estuary. Several whiting also showing up now and these will start to amass in numbers in our estuary in the next few weeks. A few of our charter boats have been traveling well off shore to take advantage of the large amount of plaice feeding on the banks a fifty mile round trip good fun if you don't mind paying the premium price that has to be charged for these distances big twin engines don't run on fairy dust !! Still some nice bass coming to the net and shoaling on the offshore banks but remember only one fish per angler or is it two !!!! once again if you want to fish offshore expect to pay a premium.

RESEARCH GIVES A BOOST TO ANGLING Angling Trust The Angling Trust has published the results of research which provides valuable insight into why people go fishing and what can be done to get more non-anglers and their families to take part in this wonderful outdoors activity.

45.6% said that fi shing events where family can do other things would encourage them to go.

The report, commissioned from research company Substance, will help shape the Angling Trust's strategy to boost fishing over the next few years. England's representative body for angling has used the study to design angling participation projects this year and it will play a key role in shaping future programmes to help people start to fish, improve facilities for disabled anglers, encourage more people to come back to the sport and to get out by the waterside more frequently. This continues the Angling Trust's work to position angling as an even more attractive option for the UK's increasingly time-pressed, aging and financially challenged population so that they can become part of angling's £1 billion contribution to the English economy and the 37,000 jobs it sustains.

24.4% said that social media to fi nd people to fi sh with and places to fish would encourage them to go.

Work carried out by the Angling Trust to promote angling and run events to increase participation, is funded by Sport England and the Environment Agency and gets tens of thousands of people fishing each year. This research highlights how fishing is an activity that can be done with family to relax and unwind, be close to nature and have fun with friends, as well as enjoying the personal challenges associated with catching a fish. Importantly the results of the research, which reached out to 13,000 people, endorse the Angling Trust's refocus on tactics that incorporate new and social media to speak to a population that might not have recently considered fishing, but who would love to combine it with other sports and pastimes, or include angling as an option in their holiday time. The Angling Trust's Participation Team hopes that everyone who has an interest in angling will benefit by downloading the summary report available at www.bit.ly/AnglingInsight Key Findings One third of the adult population of England have tried angling at least once. Of those who have tried angling, around half have some interest in doing it again. Angling attracts higher than average numbers of disabled people. 70% of current anglers said combining angling with other activities would encourage them to go.

70% said that combining angling with short breaks or other activities would encourage them to go.

40.5% of current anglers surveyed said to relax and de-stress was their most important angling motivation. Clive Copeland, Head of Participation at the Angling Trust said: "This year we've developed a range of events that our team of Regional Officers can use to sustain the involvement in angling that provides so much enjoyment to those who go fishing. The research from Substance has helped shape the content of hundreds of Get Back Into and Get Into Angling days and Let's Go Family Fishing sessions. These events have already brought thousands of anglers into or back to angling this year alone. By working alongside Get Hooked on Fishing and National Fishing Month we are providing a joined-up participation campaign based on sound research. We are confident that angling will be in a better place in years to come after this investment in its future." Will Smith, Angling Promotions Officer, for the Angling Trust added: "The insight that the surveys of 13,000 anglers and non-anglers provides, gives reassurance that the work we have initiated - which makes free fishing sessions easy to find at www. getfishing.org.uk and on our social media - will get more people fishing more often. We know that people want to go fishing and we aim to join with other sports to help make fishing a realistic choice for busy people that love spending time outdoors." Sarah Chare, Deputy Director for Fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: "Angling is good for people's health, improves educational performance and creates 37,000 jobs, so it's important to understand what makes anglers tick and how to get more people involved. Anyone can have a go, all you need is a £27 rod licence. All of this money is invested in protecting and improving fisheries and angling. Rod licences can be bought online or by phoning 0344 800 5386" Paul Kendall, NGB Relationship Manager at Sport England commented: "We are very encouraged that the Angling Trust has demonstrated its commitment to further understanding why people go angling and the role it plays in their lives. We are particularly supportive of the ways in which they are using this insight to shape what they do."

ANGLERS CALL FOR FAIRER DEAL IN NEW VIDEO ON BASS CONSERVATION MEASURES This led to mass protests by sea anglers who were further incensed when Fisheries Minister George Eustice failed to show at a demonstration last April at his Cornwall office. The film was made by James Champkin, Campaigns Officer for the Angling Trust, who visited Eastney Cruising Association near Portsmouth to record the attitudes of local anglers towards the 2016 bass regulations. Photo by David Curtis Bass anglers are calling for a fairer deal in 2017 after voicing concerns that this year’s measures disproportionately favoured commercial fishers. In a short film produced by the Angling Trust, recreational anglers claim livelihoods of charter boats, tackle shops and coastal businesses are suffering as a direct result of the bass landing restrictions. Bass regulations introduced last January were intended to conserve and begin restoration of dwindling bass stocks. While commercial hook-and-line fishermen and gill netters were permitted to take up to 1.3 tonnes of bass each month, with the exception of February and March when the fishery was closed, recreational anglers were banned from retaining a single bass for the first six months of the year and limited to only one bass per day between July and December.

Sea Angling News, October 2016

NEWS / RESULTS

James said: “It’s clear that George Eustice and other key decision makers have alienated a large proportion of the sea angling community and this was evident in the views expressed by anglers in the film. “Sea angling is worth approximately £2 billion annually to the UK economy and the livelihoods of hundreds of people in coastal communities depend directly upon the income generated from the recreational angling sector. “The Trust is committed to ensuring that ministers agree a fairer deal for sea anglers and a better deal for bass at the EU Fisheries Opportunities meeting in December, both of which require a complete moratorium on the netting of bass. As part of this lobbying process we are gathering evidence of the socio-economic impacts of this year’s bass landing restrictions and listening to the views of individual sea anglers, as this video demonstrates.”

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

Traditionally September is one of those months where the fishing really kicks into gear but so far this month the fishing around the Plymouth and South Hams area could only really be described as being steady rather than spectacular. We are just about to go through a spell of particularly large tides so fingers crossed that this will kick things off. Whilst on holiday in France I received a text from Nick Perrin of DOE Club informing me of his capture of a massive shore-caught gilthead bream of 8-10 from the River Tamar. I’ve heard number of reports of anglers hooking into and losing some large bream from the shores of the River Tamar over the past few months so its’ good to see a biggie finally get landed. Congratulations Nick, a true fish of a lifetime. The rock marks giving way to sand around the South Hams continue to produce small eyed and blonde rays and its good to see that the crab invasion seems to have moved on now resulting in baits now actually lasting longer than 5 mins. Stephen Gray of Castaways SAC registered a PB Blonde Ray of 18-3 whilst fellow club member Dave Downs had a nice small eyed of 10-4. Hopefully the next set of last quarter tides will produce further big small eyeds and blondes.

and I’m regularly hearing of daily catches of 20+ blues per boat. It is also good to see that its’ not only blues being caught but also porbeagles. I’m am also hearing of plenty of sightings of large blue fin tuna whilst boats are out fishing for Shark, the tunas being drawn in by the rubby-dubby trails. Whether this is one-off remains to be seen but with rising sea temperatures its’ more likely that this will become the norm.

Fred Doey of Castaways has certainly been enjoying some good sport from his own boat on the reefs off Plymouth, registering Cod of 19lb, bullhuss to 13-6 and black bream to 4-1. Such fish just shows the vast variety of fishing offered from Plymouth (its’ not all about the offshore wrecking).

Nice Cod on Sea Angler 2

That’s it from me for this month – happy dipping.

Fishing a mark at Minehead over low water Steve Arnold of Rodbenders SAC found a nice Small Eyed of 10-10 which was the second best specimen in the latest heat of the Plymouth and District Shore League. During the same match Danny Clegg of Rodbenders SAC landed a cracking open coast eel of 27-5 which was one of a number landed. I was told by the late great Harry Nash that as soon as the leaves start to fall from the tree’s it was time to start hitting the River Tamar for the big eels. I’ve already heard of 1 or 2 eels coming out from marks such as Devils Point and Mutton Cove whilst Mountbatten is always worth a try over high water on large springs. As we move into October and November we should start seeing some of the larger eels coming out. Fresh English squid always seems to produce well. Some excellent shark fishing continues to be experienced by anglers going afloat from Plymouth

Nick Perrin Gilthead Bream 8lb -10oz

Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 has reported that shark trips are averaging between 15 and 30 sharks per day up to a maximum weight of 180lb whilst trips to the reefs have produced Cod, Ling and some good sized spurdog in the 20lb class.

KUROSHIO BLACK TIDE JIGGING ROD By Scott Smy

Having visited it’s amazing fish-rich waters over a number of years now, I consider myself to be a bit of a Northern Norway veteran and as such you soon realise that you don’t need 30-50lb tackle to tame the larger Cod, Coalfish and Halibut that frequent these waters. Instead many anglers (me included) are fishing Norway with much lighter more sporting outfits in order to get maximum sport as in most cases you are not fishing tackle-hungry marks where you can’t allow fish to take line, unlike say wreck fishing back in the UK.

Bass - Valkyrie

The opportunity to put some top quality light tackle rods and reels through their paces during my annual visit to Havnnes in Northern Norway arose in March during a chance encounter with Russell Weston the MD of Snowbee UK. For a number of years now Snowbee have been producing some top quality rods and reels for all types of sea angling applications and I was really keen to put some of their tackle from the Snowbee Deep Blue Range to the ultimate test in Norway. The one rod in the Snowbee Deep Blue range that really stood out for me whilst wandering around the Snowbee shop was the Kuroshio Black Tide Slow Jigging Rod. Slow jigging involves working jigs and lures close to the bottom in a slower more relaxed fashion which allows lighter, wider jigs to rise and ‘flutter’ back down. Such a style of fishing is perfect for predatory fish such as Cod and Halibut and as such it had to come with me to Norway. Thanks Russell!

Bass & pollack - Valkyrie

Of the 3 different models in the range I chose the heavyweight model which was rated for lines of 20-35lbs and jigs of 130200g. The other rods in the range are the 30-100g model (which particularly lends itself to LRF) and the 70-120g version The first thing that really struck me about the rod was its’ weight or more like lack of it, weighing less than 6oz meaning you could hold the rod all day if needed (which is

Bass - Valkyrie

often the case when maximising your often limited fishing time in Norway). There is no compromise in respect of the finishes to the rod with low-rider style rod rings which have silicon carbide inserts making them extremely tough (flimsy rod rings and boats do not go hand-in-hand) and perfect for the use of braided lines which is a necessity in Norway. The high density foam grips, which were perfect for use in the colder weather conditions we experienced, added to the overall ‘comfort’ feel of the rod. Finally, and an important factor for Norway, the rod breaks down to a maximum length of 58” which makes it much easier to transport on the airlines. I guess the million dollar question is how did the rod perform? Well unfortunately I can’t answer that as try as I may I couldn’t get it out of the hands of fellow angler Steve who joined us on the trip. To say he took a shine to the rod was an understatement! For a rod that weights virtually nothing it has a tremendous amount of power, with a great through action from the mid-way point through to the butt. This power was put to the ultimate test when Steve latched into a PB Cod of just over 40lb. I have to say that the rod performed impeccably throughout the entire week landing a number of other large cod and coalfish and in Steve’s word was an absolute joy to use. The slow jigging was perfect for pirking and working large shads on the bottom which are the most popular tactics when fishing in Norway. The lightweight feel of the rod (when teamed with a Snowbee Deep Blue3 10 reel) meant lack of fatigue at the end of the day for Steve when the rest of us were pretty much cream-crackered using slightly heavier set-ups for the pirking and shadding. This really is a massive selling point for the rod, powerful but extremely light. Will I be taking the Kuroshio Black Tide jigging rod back to Norway? Absolutely……………………………………...but only if I can get it off Steve first!

As I write this particular monthly report I’ve just finished a trip which saw bass, tope, pollock, turbot and congers all in one day; a testament to the variety of species available at the moment. Although the fishing at anchor inshore has slowed up slightly, fishing on the drift is keeping us busy with good numbers of plaice on the light gear with many other species such as red mullet, dabs, smoothound, bream and gurnard as well. The last spring tide saw one of our best bass trips this year so far, with plenty of fish for the table and fish being returned too. Since the mackerel have moved on we have been using lures which means we

get at least an hour extra on the banks as we don’t have to mess around with the livebait. Long distance the wrecks are producing some quality ling, the biggest so far going to Bob Morrison at 23lb. The cod and pollock are thin on the ground so the best fishing is at anchor with good numbers of tope and bream on show. By the time I write next month’s report I will probably have done the first winter cod trip of the season. Sam Cumming Silver Spray II

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The good weather has continued and the temperatures have remained high which has bought in some spectacular lightning storms and may be pretty to view when on land but are very scary when out on the water. Poole Harbour has produced excellent Plaice catches with up to 60 being caught in a single session Chris Colledge landed a new PB of 3lb 10ozs, small to medium sized Bream are in abundance throughout the Harbour and although good fun to catch soon exhaust bait supplies. 1st time lady angler Liz Rouss whilst on holiday from London caught a 5lb 2 ozs Ballan Wrasse during a short 3hr trip and is now taking up the sport on a regular basis. Dave Colcough landed a Dover Sole adding to his species tally during an evening session along with Bass, Gurnards, Smoothhounds and many pesky Bream. In Poole Bay the hard fighting and very illusive Trigger Fish are the prime target, during a trip organised by a local angling club to promote junior anglers to take up boat fishing Flora Munden set a new club record for Trigger Fish at

3lb 2ozs and Andy Mapstone landed a Couch’s Bream (a new species for Mistress Linda). Drifting along the beaches provided many other species inc Gurnards, Bream and the occasional Turbot / Brill. Mackeral after being so plentiful switched off overnight with just the odd fish being caught. The outer bank marks on the weaker tides produce good sized Rays, Tope and Bull Huss whilst offshore the wrecks at anchor are producing good catches of Congers, larger Bream. As the season change and autumn arrives the summer species will go on their travels and Channel Whiting will arrive followed by the winter Cod. Hopefully the calamari situation resolves itself soon and becomes plentiful again. The next boat fishing competition from Poole is the Poole Cod Comp Sunday November 20th 2016 for more details contact Andy at Poole Sea Angling Centre 01202676597. Seaton Carnival Angling Competition

Match Report: 4th round of NWASAC Summer League, Sun 7.8.16, Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool (51 rods)

34 anglers took part in the carnival shore angling event at seaton on Friday evening which was run by Honiton sea angling club.

There was a bumper attendance for this penultimate round but fishing was once more below par for the venue with fewer eels and flounders than in previous years. Venue specialist, England International Heather Lindfield beat husband (and fellow International) Bill Lindfield into second place despite Bill landing one of the two rays which featured during the match. Bill now heads the league table with a long wait to the final round on October 23rd.

Fish caught in the 4 hour match included mullet bass dogfish pollack garfish mackerel scad pout smoothound gurnard plaice wrasse and bullhuss. As you can see this is a huge selection of fish that were caught and is mainly due to Seaton beach sitting in the Lyme Bay reserve protection area. The winner would be who could catch the best two fish of different species of fish.

Results: 1. Heather Lindfield (Greasby), 6 eels, 1 codling, 232 cms. (peg 35) 2. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 2 flounders, 3 whiting, 1 eel, 1 thornback ray, 230 cms. (peg 72) 3. Gareth Gardiner (Sunderland), 5 eels, 1 codling, 197 cms. Zones: Zone A: Callum Richardson (Preston), 184 cms. Zone B: Neil Cutler (Gateshead), 183 cms. Zone C: Tomos Hughes (Bangor), 104. Zone D: Les Trish (Crosby) & Dave Shorthouse (Stafford), both 180. Roundfish pool: equal B. Lindfield & George Smith (Grimsby), both rays of 62 cms. Flatfish pool: Ian Welsh (Liverpool), flounder, 34 cms. League after 4 matches: 1. B. Lindfield, 54 pts. 2. H. Lindfield, 53. 3. John Waugh (Wallasey), 49. 4. Ian Griffiths (Eastham) & Tony Owen (Clitheroe), both 48. 6. Norman Dorling (Prestatyn), 46.

Wyvern Junior Open

In first place was Simon Bowditch who weighed in a scad and garfish for 135%. Second was Terry Hartnell who recorded a mullet and bass for 128%. Third spot was dan butt with a doggie and pouting.

West Bay SAC Junior Boat Festival 2016 After a gap of several years, this annual event fished out of West Bay finally made it onto the West Bay S.A.C’s Junior fixtures list, the weather was settled and ten junior anglers signed on to fish aboard the Jolly Dodger.

After the points tally was added up, Ollie Butler won the top prize and trophy with 11 points, Aaron Chambers was a close runner-up with 10 points and coming in at third position with 6 points was Jack Parkman. The top three received tackle vouchers plus additional prizes for longest fish and best mackerel. The club would like to thank all at Jolly Dodger Charters for making this trip possible and also Jason Salvador Swords for the main prizes and Lynn Mudford for additional prizes. Full details as follows:

Prize sponsors: Jason Salvador Swords and Lynn Mudford.

Wyvern Junior Open A good entry of 49 was had at the wyvern open junior festival. The event was held in conjunction with the plymouth federation on mountbatten breakwater at plymouth. Some nice fish were caught during the 4 hour competition with garfish, mackerel, wrasse and pollack being recorded.

Many thanks to all that came along day with plymouth juniors fishing alongside juniors from west bay and beer. The picture shows the winner with her garfish and prizes. Also pictured is the group queueing for their goodie bags along with a shot of them with there angling trust bags etc. If anyone could put this report up for all to see that would be great.

SLO - Round 9 Eight West Bay S.A.C. junior members signed on for the annual competition on East Pier and despite a few rumbles of thunder before the match, the weather stayed dry but cloudy with a gentle south easterly breeze. Sea conditions were clear and slightly choppy. Aaron Chambers was the first to kick off proceedings with the first of dozens of common blenny or shanny that came to the rods nearest the rocks. All but one of the competitors landed fish with shanny, corkwing and ballan wrasse, tompot blenny, pollack and weever coming to the scales. Unfortunately no flounders showed so the prize for heaviest flatfish went unclaimed for a second match in a row. As the match continued Ewan Chambers landed a brace of sizeable corkwing wrasse which gave him the lead but was soon challenged by Nathan McMaster who answered with another corkwing followed by a sizeable shore rockling. Aaron Chambers eventually made it into third spot with a sizeable corkwing wrasse and positions seemed to be set for the match but a last minute capture by Caolan Ayers was just enough to edge him into the lead with a ballan wrasse of 349 g, 19 g ahead of Ewan Chambers. Although Aaron Chambers had the greatest weight and number of fish (fourteen for 854 g), fish achieving the Angling Trust’s minimum size takes precedence over undersized fish so he attained a respectable fourth position with a sizeable weight of 152 g.

Heather Lindfield, NWASAC

The organisers would like to thank all the sponsors on the day who kindly supplied all the prizes and goodie bags for all 49 taking part. Not only did they all get a goodie bag but also had a refreshments bag also.

The picture left to right shows Terry, Simon and Dan.

The match was fished on the 18th August over a four hour period between 15:00 – 19:00. Fishing was a little slow but all competitors managed to land fish; this was the first time the boat festival was fished to the club’s measure and release points system introduced in recent years. This enables most fish to be released immediately unless destined for the pot or for bait use. Species included pout, scad, bull huss, cuckoo wrasse, lesser spotted dogfish, ballan wrasse and mackerel.

1st Ollie Butler 11 points 2nd Aaron Chambers 10 points 3rd Jack Parkman 6 points Longest fish: Harry Courtice bull huss 62 cm Longest mackerel: Kadie Lynham 28 cm

In first place was Evie Gallagher of the rodbenders club with a nice garfish of 1lb 1.75oz (see picture) runner up was Zoe Lawrence with another gar of 1lb. Third spot was filled by Lewis Smith .

The prize for the best single fish was dave shore from bristol who had a mullet of 3lb 15.5oz.

Shore fishing has been hard going in recent weeks from what anglers have been telling me though some excellent fish have been landed. The next few months are generally the most productive of the year with a wide range of specimen fish available for those prepared to put in the hours and effort. Rob Young didn’t waste any time finding the fish on a recent trip to North Devon after making the lengthy trip from South Wales for a 7.00am start with Stefan Jones. The day afloat with Stefan resulted in a remarkable bull huss that was weighed afloat registering somewhere between 14lb and 16lb! The following day Rob fished from the coast with local angler Kevin Legge and landed a good bass of around 6lb as well as several other fish. Stefan Jones, Matthew Druce and Sam Longhurst enjoyed a successful boat trip off the North Devon coast with Sam a newcomer to angling landing his first ever bull huss. The trio enjoyed a great day afloat landing around twenty tope to 25lb, numerous huss and a few conger. All the fish were tempted using frozen Ammo mackerel. The day was made extra special in the presence of dolphins, porpoises and gannets. Liam Stevens fished the estuary, targeting the wily mullet that frustrate many an angler. Liam eventually tempted his prize; a fine 4lb 7oz specimen using bread flake presented in conjunction with a bubble float. The fish gave a great fight and has inspired Liam to fish for them again. Ollie Passmore enjoyed a session on Ilfracombe Pier landing a fine bass of 7lb 1oz that was carefully returned to the water after a quick photo. The fish was tempted using a large mackerel bait. Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Annual Fun Fishing event on Ilfracombe Pier was once again a highly enjoyable event with twenty competitors taking part and plenty of onlookers taking an active interest. Special guests for the event were Libby Ross from IFCA and representing the local coastguard Deputy Station Officer Dave Mannering and Coastguard Rescue officer Jodie Smith. When fishing eventually got underway competitors soon started to get a few bites and swing fish ashore to be admired briefly before being returned to the water. Species caught included tub gurnard, pollock, wrasse, rockling, shore rockling, poor cod, pouting, smelt, grey mullet, rock goby, tompot blenny, and mackerel. Despite the small size of many of the fish caught beaming smiles on young faces made the event well worthwhile. Winner of the top prize was young Charlie Stanway who caught five species for 7 points. Runner up was Sam Davison who caught four species for 7 points. Winner of the over 18’s section was Lyn Wilson with 7 points and runner up Ali Laird with 5 points. The heaviest fish was a 1lb grey mullet caught by Dan Welch. Special thanks go to High Street Tackle who kindly sponsored the event. Combe Martin SAC and North Devon Angling News also provided prizes.

ALDERNEY REPORT

Most Species of the Year 18 – Darren Braby 17 - Adam Salmon 15 - James Clarke

By Mark Harding Shore Sport Think last month’s shout of ‘it’s really kicked into gear’ was a bit premature. There is plenty of Bass around with the fish being mainly in the 12oz to 3lb bracket. The odd fish 4lb+ unless you fish with big baits on the bottom around the harbour area in which case the size rockets. Pollack are plentiful from the Breakwater particularly at dusk complimented by good numbers of Garfish. The odd Mackerel still showing too. Its the rest of it that’s missing? Some good Ballans of course but they are there all year round so we rarely highlighting them, lots of Mullet showing but no one really targeting them. There is small Bream around in both Black and Couches variety. Dogs, Pout etc all there, plenty of Scad too – reeling a few off – is it that bad? Maybe not for where your sat but we are waiting for the Sole, Red Mullet, bigger Bream etc to really come in to force, plus Rays, Tope and Eels – I’m sure they will, sure they will! Boat Sport I love sitting on the anchor at this time of year, you never know what’s going to come your way. Big blondes, Congers, Tope and Huss can all be targeted on the same marks such is some of the reef formations we have here. Scale down and it’s Bream of 3 types, colourful Cuckoo Wrasse, the odd Cod, plus you could get anyone of Bass, Cod, Turbot, Brill on the anchor. Choice is unlimited it seems. Drifting for Turbot and Brill thin on the ground at this time of year but hit a good day and 15-20 is still easily possible. Brill have been about in good numbers still. Bass have been hard to stay with, good one day and not so the next but fish to 8lb reported. Alderney 33 Hour Lure Festival This event just gets better! A record turnout of anglers and record visitors fished with fantastic camaraderie it was a pleasure to fish this at the weekend. The weather could have been kinder second half but it is what it is. Loved the competitive nature of the event too, fished in the right spirit and as the prize table is split its great to see the locals pointing the visiting anglers in the right direction, and its proven in the results to whereby in the Species Hunt you can hardly tell the difference with similar outcomes. Fished over 33 hours Saturday had the better weather and anglers set about to execute their plans. This event is two pronged, go for Specimens or go for Species. Down to you and your skill set. With the weather forecasting wind and rain for the evening it was a case of getting as much done as possible but trying to find out who had what was nip and tuck. Myself, I teamed up with Tronix mastermind George Cunningham and we set off to get as many species as possible. First hit was to get a Bass before the waters got weeded out. Plenty of Bass have been around but they weren’t in the haunts I’d been told of all week, infact it was our 6th mark and 2 hours in to the match before I connected. It was a wee while before George got his Bass but he did have a Ballan. Our Mullet mark was taken up so we went bouldering for Gobies. I got a Giant and Tompot whilst George struggled to get the technique. Then he got his eye in, then with a couple of moves and before I got a grasp George had sprinted ahead and got to 7! Then the rains came and the wind increased, but we fished through. George had a lot of success on a rig he made up and picked up off the bottom species which included Scad and a nice Black Bream and finished on a brilliant 12 to my 7 before we went to bed. Wind was howling! Up before dawn we set off with target species in mind, George was Gobies and mine were Mackerel and Gar. The wind had eased a wee bit but the water was coloured, this was going to be tricky and proved to be the case for everyone. For two hours I tried and knowing I was 5 behind the leader at the start I watched the guy pull out two new species for him under my nose so I changed tactics. Why I did heavens know because it wasn’t working out for George but I got my kick start I needed. A change of venue and George still struggled so we split to do different things. I was now on 9 and headed off to get a Ballan. Got that fairly easy and had another go for a Mackie or a Gar and still failed. I went to a popular Mullet mark to reccie it for G and myself only to find room for one and for George this was the saving grace. He had to remain where he was, despite bites I failed at the Mullet but meanwhile in the last half hour George managed 2 species to take his tally to a creditable 14 and claimed second spot in his category and £200!! This event is well supported by sponsors Tronixpro, HTO, FIIISH, Delalande, Marukyu, Ecogear, Alderney Angling , YGK, Hart and the States of Alderney. Each category had around £100 of lures, Longest Round Fish a Penn reel and braid plus the 6 cash prizes. So plenty of prizes we did have which added to a great atmosphere come presentation time. Results 23 different species were caught in all including a wonderful 1lb 15oz Tub Gurnard caught by Alistair Walters, plus something I never seen before caught on rod and line - Clingfish - not one but three!! Here they are: Pollack, Ballan Wrasse, Corkwing Wrasse, Goldsinny Wrasse, Scad, Pout, Smelt, Leopard Spotted Goby, Giant Goby, Bass, Garfish, Tompot Blenny, Dragonet, Rock Goby, Black Goby, Shanny, Whiting, Black Bream, Long Spined Scorpion Fish, Mackerel, Thick Lipped Mullet, Clingfish and Tub Gurnard!!

Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Ballan Wrasse - Breakwater Great to see so many turn out despite the weather, how unlucky was that!? Despite that though with the exception to poor Jordan everyone managed to weigh in - better luck next time Jordan. The fishing itself wasn’t inspiring and everyone had to work for their fish with the focus for most being the biggie and ignoring the smaller stuff. It certainly paid of for James Clarke who had his first league win ever with a nice fish of 4lb 9oz, bet that was a win he thought would never happen after being the bridesmaid so many times!! Well done James. Also well done to Jack Williams who winkled out a nice Bass or around 3lb. Great to see Jordan Walters back and he was back with a bag with a last minute fish of 3lb 14oz. Awesome stuff!! Its a rover event so booking in from 14.00 at the shop. Heaviest Fish counts and minimum size is 42cm. Two rods max 4 hooks allowed. League Table (Top 10) James played a blinder with his Joker and maxxed out on points, it’s really strengthened his position in the top 4. For the others - yes there’s a gap but lots of points to play for and it is the top 4! Really curious who I am going to be taking to the Keys with me next year!! Scott still has 2 jokers to pay and WILL strike I guess, Alistair and Mikey one to go. Top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and the winner of that will get to go to the Florida Keys!! (or if preferred a European destination). Best 14 matches from the 20 count so next match we start dropping points. Flying The Flag For Fishing Angling’s largest participation programme, National Fishing Month (NFM), continues to set the benchmark for fishing participation initiatives, following the introduction of nearly 14,000 new people to angling this summer. They took part in a nationwide schedule of 326 special NFM events – a new record - held across six weeks during July and August 2016.

the experience and wanted to know where they could continue fishing near to where they lived.”

NFM 2016 was launched at a specially organised showcase event at the Sportfish Game Fishing Centre at Theale, Reading, on a gloriously sunny day during which people tried game angling for the first time. With a customised day full of hands-on angling opportunities, the event focus was on youngsters and newcomers, thereby meeting the core ethos of National Fishing Month.

Naidre Werner, Chair of the Angling Trades Association (ATA) which runs NFM, enthused: “I’m over the moon that our NFM participant numbers continue to reflect how important NFM is in creating awareness of angling to the general public. We really do fly the flag for fishing… and people love it.

One of the final NFM events took place at the Evesham Festival where, despite the typically unpredictable British bank holiday weather, the team still managed to coach over 150 people on the banks of the Warwickshire Avon.

“But the Angling Trades Association isn’t solely responsible for making this participation initiative There were at least 20 other events organised across such a success. We continue to enjoy funding support the country during the first weekend of NFM. One from the Environment Agency, regional and national of which was held at Northlands Park in Basildon, support from the Angling Trust and the Professional Essex, where coarse angling coaches offered sessions Anglers Association and, in 2016, outstanding on the lake in the park, alongside pond dipping and support with over 30 of their own events organised rig-tying clinics. by our new partner, the Canal and River Trust. These included a number of special activities John Ellis, Fisheries Manager for the Canal and coinciding with open days at Cassiobury Park Farm River Trust commented: “We are delighted with in Watford. Paul Forman, NFM organiser and owner how well our new partnership with National Fishing of Watford Angling Coaches who coached at the Month worked out this year, engaging with nearly events, reported: “It was a very busy NFM period 1000 participants. 2017 to make sure that even more people get the fishing habit.” Naidre added: “This year, we have enjoyed continued headline sponsorship from Daiwa, Leeda and Pure Fishing and also physical help in facilitating support to the organisers from Fosters of Birmingham and Fishing Republic. Additions to the NFM family include support from manufacturers such as Fladen, Fox, Dinsmores and Tricast and retailer Angling Direct. They have demonstrated the admirable virtue of ‘putting something back into angling’, and I applaud them. The Angling Times and Angler’s

Mail should also be mentioned and thanked for their ongoing support for both NFM and the Take A Friend Fishing campaigns. “The real key to NFM’s ongoing success is without doubt attributable to the enthusiastic, steadfast support of the voluntary organisers and coaches who actually plan and deliver the events every year. It’s down to their hard work that the sport is exposed to so many people – and they deserve our greatest thanks and gratitude for helping recruit the next generation of anglers to our wonderful sport.”

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Chris Snow

Well things are changing slightly with whiting beginning to show into darkness and some Cod have started to be caught as predicted , best I have heard of so far being around the 9lb mark from Worthing Pier. There have also been rumours of a couple from Shoreham Beach. Undulate Rays are still showing in numbers during or after a blow and I even went myself to Worthing pier and managed 5 in 5 casts biggest just under 11lb. Garfish are around in numbers in calm clear conditions to either popped up rigs or on the float .Mackerel have thinned out although scad continue to show and Bass have been caught again on livebaits and on lures .Golden Grey mullet have been thin on the ground unfortunately and only a few have been reported but that could still change. Sea Angling News, October 2016

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association By Richard Saxby

A bit more activity since my last report, we've even managed a couple of comps! On Sunday 28th of August 5 boats with 12 anglers fished our first smoothound comp with all fish measured and released, a new format for the club. Plenty of hounds were caught along with thornies, dogs, conger and a couple of bass. A few hounds were weighed on the boats and they came in significantly heavier than the measurements worked out at. Winner was Andy Georgiou with a hound of 11.53lb, second was myself with one of 9.35lb and third was Stephen Saxby with 8.43lb. At the same time we also fished The Presidents Cup as 3 other attempts to fish it had been cancelled due to the weather. This was fished as a best specimen and won by Martin Quinn with a bass of 7lb 2.5oz and 89% which was also the best overall specimen so gave him the pools as well. Fish of the month for August was won by Martin Quinn with his bass.

TELBOY'S TACKLE AMLWCH, ANGLESEY

Sunday 11th September was the Fred Peters Trophy fished as a species hunt with no minimum sizes but all fish to be photographed and released. This should have been a 38 hour comp but due to a poor forecast for the Saturday was reduced to a 13 hour comp with

a 3 am start! None the less 5 boats and 12 bleary eyed anglers made it on the beach for 2.45 am to book in. The sea was still a tad lively and in the pitch black everyone stayed local until the sun came up then some ventured down channel as far as Porlock but it was slow progress and some time until the sea died down. Fishing overall was a bit slow probably due to the very small tide but 9 species were caught with the top 3 all tied on 5 species. Pete Nicholson, Andy Georgiou and Steve Winters shared the honours. Species caught were thornies, dogs, conger, hounds, spotted ray, tope, wrasse, gurnard and 3 beard rockling. Hopefullly the winds will stay light and we can get out there after the first of the autumn cod over the next few weeks. As I write this the temperature has started to drop and the nights are drawing in, it's definitely starting to feel a little coddy. The next club competition is the Tony Holy Trophy from Burnham on Sea on Sunday 30th October. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 20th October at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. SURPRISE STINGRAY IN LYME BAY

The Fishing 4 Schools (F4S) Kent team has forged a new partnership with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), holding a fishing session for its members near Gravesend on 30 August. CACT is well known for its social inclusion work with young people from across London and Kent and has scooped numerous industry awards. Warren White, who leads the F4S Kent team said: “I was prepared for a high turn-out and on the day 22 young people turned up. These were young people that had travelled from across Kent to be at the event at Shorne Country Park, Gravesend, such was the enthusiasm to have a go at fishing. “From the start the coaches realised that we had a real lovely group. They were quiet and concentrated in their approach and really progressed in their angling as the day went on. “Because of the number of participants, they took turns in fishing while others sat patiently taking their turn and getting in important water breaks as the weather was really hot. “Every young person that attended the event caught fish – roach, rudd, tench, perch and that special fish the Crucian carp. And at the end of the event many of the participants asked when they could come fishing again, so we are arranging another similar event at Grove Farm Fishery at Hadlow College, for next year. A great day was had by all!” And Terry Peart of CACT said: “The young people had a brilliant time. Fishing really works as an activity for us. It allows the young people to help each other in a relaxing environment and is very useful for aiding social networking and raising self-esteem among the group. “We are very grateful to the F4S team for a fabulous day!”

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, October 2016

MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT by James Wigglesworth

September can be one of the best fishing months on the calendar here in the Channel. The Species fishing is pretty much peaking with almost anything a possibility when fishing the inshore marks. The wellknown reefs and ledges are packed with hungry bass waiting in ambush to engulf your plastic lure or liver sand eel. There’s a good stamp of fish about too with 5lb-7lb making regular appearances. While at anchor there’s is a whole multitude of species to target. The tope fishing is still in full swing from Porlock down to Ilfracombe with some lovely fish up to 50lb being reported. The ever present bullhuss can provide good sport all year round but for those wanting to target the smaller seasonal species there is no better time. The bream fishing has been relatively disappointing this year with catches being less than consistent and very sporadic. The odd smoothound is still showing itself but what will excite a lot of you is the fact that a few codling have been caught. Fingers crossed we will see a few more over the coming months which should set

us up nicely for this years cod season! If its rays you’re after then they are there to be had. From the port of Watchet you can expect large numbers of thornbacks and some cracking blondes. The trips out west to the far reaches of the channel will come to an end soon as the water temperature cools. This will see the departure of the blue sharks that are targeted in this remote pocket of water, There have been some real lumps boated this season but its not just the sharking that has been good as the bottom fishing on these grounds has been pretty prolific too. We’ve had some lovely surprises over he summer with decent sized haddock, specimen sized gurnards and the stunning john dory. Well ill leave you with that for this month. It might be time to start stocking that freezer up with squid, blacks and your usual cod baits as I have a feeling this years going to be a good one. Tight Lines and Fish Hard!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle The past month has seen some great catch catches from up and down the channel. Some respectable Dover sole, bass, rays, smoothounds, conger eel and a good sprinkle of codling have all been making up catches. Unusually warm weather has prolonged the summer season and with the channels sea temperature a good 1.9c warmer than this time last year and warmer than its been for over 10 years things need to cool down a bit before the Autumn / winter season gets under way. It will be very interesting to see how things pan out in in the coming months. Fingers crossed for a early frosty or two I say. Prospects for the month ahead could be interesting depending on the weather. Things will more than likely continue as they have for the past few weeks, with hopefully a few more codling in the mix and with the last signs of any late hounds before they leave for the winter residence. The upper reaches of the channel should continue to provide bass, sole and more codling in the coming weeks. The Weston and Burnham marks have plenty of Thornback Ray on offer along with bass, sole and eels. The Somerset reef systems from Hinkley point to Watchet can be frustrating trying to get through the masses of congers while targeting the resident Thornbacks. The reefs offer some fantastic opportunity for some tidy bass fishing. You can be

sure a double figure bass or two will be making the most of he food on offer in the gullies and pools. The Dunster beach and Minehead golf links beach have been on fine form lately and things should get better in the coming weeks pending more codling moving in. It's not just the codling that you can expect to catch here. Bass Ray's and sole to name a few make up catches. The coming month though will see some great sport from big congers along this stretch with 20-30lb eels regularly caught. Most caught unsuspectingly by anglers targeting the codling and bass. For anyone looking to bag a 20lb plus PB shore caught conger then it's worth getting out and trying to get one. The low water marks in and around Minehead are worth a look for a small eyed ray or two. October often gives up the better specimen small eyed along this area. Neap to medium tides being the most consistent for good results around the White mark. Further west at Bossington & Porlock weir we can expect some good mixed bags of fish and probably one of the best venues to find a late hound. That's about it for this month. So Tightlines and happy hunting...

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs It looks like we are going to be blessed with an Indian Summer, keep the sun tan lotion at hand! Although a bit premature, I am all ready thinking about targeting our first winter Cod, I have heard early reports of Cod being caught at Chesil beach, the Western Solent and the mile gulley South of the Needles. All three of these venues are popular and worth drowning a few squid, cuttle or black lug. It has to be said, it's one of the better years for catching

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage As the summer season begins to wind down and the days start to get shorter, most local anglers are looking forward to another good Cod season off the Needles and of course the Solent, which rely fished well last year,The good news is that we have started to pick up our first early inshore Cod and Pollock which is a really good start to the season, the only problem is the lack of Squid bait which is going to be really expensive this year, the other alternative of course is Cuttle fish which does seem to be available at the moment. Mackerel are still in the area but hard to find at times, we have had some success with a lazy rod over the side with a big weight and let them come to it. Works well on smaller tides and slack water. NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Port Report Being so ancient, I suppose it is inevitable that the young skippers of our port ask me if I have ever known the fishing to be as bad as it has been and continues to be this year. An interesting question indeed. The fishing so far this September has been very hard. It is hard because we are trying to catch bream and they are still very scattered across a large sea area. Some days one of the boats will land on them and have a good day whilst others all around are struggling and then, full of optimistic confidence, the same skipper will return to the same mark the next day and watch his anglers struggle and thus be treated to their cold stares of semi-hatred that we skippers are so fond of. It is accurate to say that the bream catches are slowly improving and there is slightly more consistency to the catches. Our collective unfailing optimism as anglers leads us to hope that this improvement will continue into October. We are trying to find some plaice for our anglers with very limited success yet the local trawler working the Shambles Bank is returning with good catches of them. We are trying what used to be the mussel bed areas to the south and west of the Shambles and finding just the odd plaice but we all know the mussels have gone. We know that there are plaice close in to Chesil Beach because shore divers tell us they are seeing plenty and we know the inshore netsmen are doing pretty well yet, once again, we can only catch the occasional fish. It is baffling. The plaice fishing used to centred solely on The Shambles with the season running late February to maybe the first week of April. Ragworm and squid baits accounted for the plaice even though the fish were on the Shambles to fatten up on the sandeels. Using sandeels for bait was a waste of time. After early April we did not expect to catch any more plaice even though we were told that the mussel beds to the west of The Shambles was carpeted with them. It was by accident that the successful prawn/worm/ squid bait combination was discovered and then the September-October period became the new main ‘Plaice season’. There is the feeling that the plaice have to be ‘somewhere’ out there around and if we could just find where and then uncover the required bait, time and tide they would be back on the menu… but at the moment we haven’t got a clue! Bass. Now there’s a word. There’s all sorts of stuff flying around about bass. Jersey have announced they intend to seek a complete and total ban on all bass fishing. The Facebook Warriors frequently point us towards articles about the bass situation. There is a meeting in Brussels in October about the plight of the bass and there will be further action taken in December at the EU meeting in Brussels. Now should be the prime time for bass here and in the Channel Islands. Anglers travelling to Alderney for their annual week’s holiday are concerned about the small amount of bass they are able to retain…that is one per angler per day. Right now I would be delighted if we could reach that limit having just returned from a three day Alderney trip with very able anglers…. and without a single sizeable bass on the boat! That is definitely a first and is extremely worrying. We have all been too concerned with bream, bass and plaice at this time of the year. There are other species to fish for and this has been a very good year for the bigger fish. Tope, congers, rays, huss and smoothounds have been around in numbers but are not a popular fish for many anglers to try for. It is difficult to change opinions but we skippers are forever going on about angling being a ‘sport’ and not to be aimed at just ‘fishing for the table’. October sees Weymouth hosting the very popular

five day WIBAC (Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition) event. This is a competition that shows off Weymouth’s strengths with its amazing variety of species and encourages competitors to use a whole range of angling techniques to tempt the smallest mini species up to the congers, rays and tope. For we skippers it is a treat to observe such skilful anglers who are able to read the situation and execute precision timing to maximise the potential of what is on offer at different stages of the tide and day. It shows how much there is to learn and how much angling still has to offer even if the main favourites of the Charter Anglers’ world are in short supply. We will expect to see more bream; there will be some notable bass catches occurring sometime during the month and the turbot, which have been at their most plentiful for many years, will continue to provide a worthwhile target species. The ray fishing will be at its best and there will still be conger and tope around. We may see the first of the whiting showing from the Adamant and west side marks.

The wrecks should start to have a few pollack arriving at the end of October. Although we believed the cod had left in August there were still a few caught during the cross- Channel and perhaps one or two may still be about in October. So, the answer to the question posed in the opening paragraph about how difficult the fishing has and continues to be, my answer would be that we are comparing exceptional years and the inevitable glowing memories they provide with a much more ‘subdued’ period. 2015 was, for exaple, an exceptional year for cod but this year has been very good although nowhere near as prolific. I do recall many years when even one cod on a wrecking trip was regarded as a welcome bonus and six in a day was seen as a good day. The amazing plaice fishing we enjoyed up to two years ago has gone. This is not because the fish have all gone (remember the local trawler bringing plenty into Weymouth) but that the habitat that supported them (the mussel beds) has completely disappeared. We hope the mussel beds will return and the cycle will re-continue but of course no-one knows if this will happen. There were many years when Weymouth’s bream, a major feature of the charter fishing in the late 1960’s/ early 70’s, completely disappeared due, we were told back then, by massive pressure from the French commercial sector but we have since experienced superb bream fishing and this month’s fishing will continue to feature them. The blonde rays disappeared due to long-lining but you can, with a reasonable degree of confidence, throw the anchor in on the various banks and expect some good ray fishing in October. There is still plenty to try for. Agreed, the fishing is not easy but it has often been much worse. Every year there is a dominant species that catches anglers’ attention and somehow compensates for the lack of other types of fish. The problem this year is that the dominant species, and there are several with the conger, rays and tope, are not popular and this is why the fishing appears to be ‘so bad’. We must try to enjoy what is on offer and remember the important reasons we go fishing. October will be great….and we look forward to welcoming you aboard to share in the delights of being at sea together.

FROM SOAP STARS TO TACKLE MAKERS … ANGLING TRUST AND FISH LEGAL ANNOUNCE 20 NEW AMBASSADORS Twenty anglers from the world of TV, journalism, F1 and the angling industry have agreed to become Ambassadors for the Angling Trust and Fish Legal. They include EastEnders’ star and carp fanatic Scott Maslen, The Big Fish Off winner James Stokoe, exFormula 1 Technical Director Ross Brawn, journalist and author Charles Clover, Carp Talk magazine owner Bev Clifford, and England international fly-fisher Lisa Isles. The 20 new faces join a celebrated list of Ambassadors that includes ex-England footballer David Seaman, comedian Paul Whitehouse, Commonwealth gold medal winner Dean Macey, TV presenter and photographer Henry Gilbey, and writer and broadcaster Matt Hayes who all support the work of the Angling Trust and Fish Legal and our efforts to create a strong, unified voice to protect fish and fishing. The Angling Trust was formed in 2009 and now employs 55 members of staff. As the national governing body for angling in England, the Trust represents anglers at every level, campaigning for fish and fishing in sea and freshwater, developing participation in angling and managing national and international competitions and teams. Fish Legal takes action through the courts to protect its member clubs and fisheries from environmental damage and other issues which impact on fishing. The expert in-house legal team has recovered hundreds of thousands of pounds in damages and costs from polluters over the past seven years. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “We are very grateful to all these high profile supporters for agreeing to become Ambassadors for the Angling Trust and Fish Legal to help encourage more people to join us.

“All our campaigning and legal work is funded by membership subscriptions, donations and legacies, all of which are steadily growing as more and more anglers, clubs and fisheries support the unified body for all angling. Our organisations make a real difference at a national and local level, but we need more support.” The 20 new Ambassadors are: James Stokoe, Robin Morley, Charles Clover, Steve Rowley, Scott Maslen, Budgie Price, Tony King, Trevor Harrop, David Wolsoncroft-Dodds, Lisa Isles, Paul Devlin, Sam Edmonds, Gary Edmonds, Andy Ford, Jo Stephenson, Bev Clifford, Rod Sturdy, Ross Brawn, Barrie Welham and Nigel Horsman.

Care and repair for the places our fish call home Institute of Fisheries Management

Latest developments in managing and conserving the freshwater and marine fisheries in the UK and abroad will be reviewed in Norwich next month (October). More than 30 UK fishery experts will review their work, much of it government funded, together with two speakers from the American Fisheries Society and one from Germany. Projects include monitoring fish in the Medway estuary in Kent, after the creation there earlier this year of the UK’s largest marine protected area after pressure from the Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM) and others to recognise the importance of estuaries as marine nurseries. Speakers will include Sarah Chare, deputy director for fisheries at the Environment Agency and others from Marine Scotland, the Rivers Trust and CEFAS, an

agency of the UK environment department, The meeting is the IFM’s 47h annual conference and will be opened by Jacquie Burgess, chair of the Norfolk Broads Authority. Page 2 There will be a full day visit to Natural England’s large-scale regeneration project at nearby Hoveton Great Broad where equipment recording fish numbers includes sonar cameras first developed by the US Navy.

followed with another bass 4lb 9oz as did Guy Bates with a fish of similar size. Returning to Lymington a stop was made for fresh mackerel which did not appear, but it enabled Lynne to get enough pout to ensure her cats had a good supper. An enjoyable day was had by all. Anybody wishing to experience recreational boat fishing, suitable for all experienced and novices please contact Robin Lane 078 7647 1901. Report sent in by Malcolm Gerrish.

Non-members of the IFM registering for the full conference (October 4-6) will receive free membership of the institute for 15 months. Details at info@ifm.org.uk or telephone +44 (0)845 388 7012

Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club.

Recreational boat fishing trip – 14th September. Seven club members met at Lymington Yacht Haven Marina for a day’s recreational fishing aboard John Skeggs charter boat Last Laugh. An early start at 7.00am ensured the sun could be seen rising above the Solent as we made our way out of harbour. The plan was for a go at drifting for bass beyond the Needles and if that proved successful and bass catch quota reached we would then try for some early cod. First stop was to get our bait for the day and using small baited Hokkai Lures the bait tanks were soon topped up with fresh bait. Even using small lures additional larger species were caught including several wrasse and mackerel Guy Bates surprised us all by bringing in a good sized cuttle fish which was soon squirting its ink sacs, luckily not hitting anybody. For those of us with no float fishing gear John had a supply of ready rigged rods for our use. Pete Hurley was first to catch a bass weighing 4lbs. The fishing being slow it was decided to try our luck at Christchurch Bay . This proved a better bet with Malcolm Gerrish catching a personal best bass weighing in at 11lbs 9oz. Birthday Girl Lynne then

Malcolm Gerrish with his personal best bass of 11lbs 9oz.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 25

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand Well where to start.... I have been fortunate to be writing the Chesil Beach report for 3 months now and I can safely say it has not been easy to write a positive feature yet. Unfortunately I can't use smoke & mirrors or put glitter on it so here goes. Yet again for many, including myself, it's been very frustrating. Many parts of the beach are still stacked out with spider crabs smashing the rigs & pinching your bait. There is also plenty of weed which has been a massive issue along most shallow parts of Cogden, Bexi and the Hive areas with the Cove being impossible at time also. The big Bream didn't show up, the Hounds have been rather small this end of summer and the Plaice for the first 3 weeks of the month went off the feed along with the Cod being late to show up this year. Though saying all this, anglers have still put some top hours in including myself hoping that something will happen. It was good to see after the first blow of the month that a small number of codling did show at the Ferrybridge end. The good news is that the ones that are showing have been of good size, as Sam Truan found with a 8lb 9oz Cod. So Im not sure if we will get the numbers we have previously seen but I'm sure that they will be of a good stamp this year with lots of PB's being broken! This last week has shown why we must keep on trying,

Craig Hobden, Dave Cogger and myself spent an enjoyable evening at Cogden catching over 40 plaice & 9 sole upto 2lb. All the fish came to lug baits on weighted hook lengths, even the plaice didn't feed on the rag. The strange thing about the session was most of the Plaice came at night, with double shots at 1am. It seems that past few days the shallow beaches come alive with flatties. As you can imagine my phone was rather hot after this session and lots of anglers have since seen great numbers of Plaice and Sole over the weekend. Anglers have been rewarded at last for all their efforts and it's great to see all the smiling faces captured with their catch and the reports have been flying in. Hopefully next few weeks should really see the Cod begin to arrive in numbers so we should all be hitting the deaper areas of the beach with our pulley pennel rigs baiting up with some lovely fresh black lug or blow. Do remember to order your worm baits early as once the Cod arrive it will be virtually impossible to just walk in to the shops and pick up spare wraps. Our local shops are very good and appreciate us all booking our baits early.

TRONIX PRO / NEWS

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO As the nights draw in and the temperature slowly descends some lrf rods get shut away in lofts/ cupboards or just lost behind the beach rods at the back of the shed. This is just not how they should be treated!!! LRF sport doesn’t end at the end of September as some people would have you think there is still plenty of target species habiting the piers, harbours, and rocks all within reach of us LRFers. Admittedly its obviously more pleasant having a rod in your hand and bag over your shoulder On a pleasant mid 20*c summers day however a few little lrf tips can keep you more active ,comfortable and most importantly catching more fish during the autumn and winter months: Personally my winter lrf trips tend to be more planned than in the warmer months this is simply because I have been drenched and frozen with just a hoodie for protection way too many times!!! I tend to fish in more built up venues so if the temperature or weather suddenly turns or gets too much I can just pop into the nearest pub, chip shop or shop to warm up for a few minuets, also if you drive pick venues that you can park within a few minute walk In case you have to suddenly abort mission. Fishing wise I fish bigger, heavier and simpler just to make it simpler when you loose all feeling in your fingers. A dry towel is always handy to keep your hands dry and warm after handling fish (do not use towels to handle any fish). if you are planning to fish one spot for a little while a fishing umbrella, seat or even just a mat to sit on can make yourself more comfortable but if you go for the tactic I go for then keeping on the move and fishing as many different spots as possible and don’t be afraid to visit the same spots more than once. The most important thing about autumn/winter lrf fishing in my option is get used a species

very close to my heart... the humble pouting. admittedly my soft spot for pouting started while fishing matches as they usually just save me the blank on the last cast however once they get over a couple ounces they are surprisingly dogged fighters and are one of the most responsive “winter fish” to soft plastics. So don’t let your lrf setup get lost to the winter, wrap up, take a flask of hot coffee and keep sending your lrf pictures into SAN!!!

Each Month we will be running a competition in association with HTO.
