www.snowbee.co.uk ANGLING TRUST REPRESENTS FISH AND FISHING IN POST-BREXIT DEBATE The Angling Trust’s Campaigns Chief Martin Salter joined environmental NGOs including the RSPB, WWF, Wildlife Trust, Marine Conservation Society and the National Trust at a special EU referendum workshop organised by Wildlife and Countryside Link on Tuesday 26th July at the Cass Business School in London. The purpose of the workshop was to explore the implications of Brexit for wildlife and the environment given that many of the protections currently in place derive from EU law and Directives. A panel of expert speakers went through the steps that need to be taken to ensure that threatened species can continue to be protected and how fisheries and the marine environment can be managed sustainably once the decision to leave the European Union is enacted. The Angling Trust also recently organised an Angling Summit with Fisheries and Farming Minister George Eustice, who kept his post in the recent reshuffle, and Brexit was at the top of the agenda. The Minister indicated that Directives and regulations would continue in the short term, but that they might be modified to make them more relevant to domestic needs over time, and that international commitments such as the Bern Convention would remain in place. He made some welcome indications of his intentions to rationalise the farming subsidy regime to make payments conditional on protection of the water environment. There was also a discussion about marine fisheries and the possibility for more domestic regulation of inshore fisheries, despite the UK probably remaining involved in the Common Fisheries Policy. Martin Salter said: "This is an uncertain time in politics and the Angling Trust is working hard with our partner organisations in fisheries and the wider environmental field to ensure that the important protections that we currently enjoy through our membership of the EU are not lost once the UK leaves. We are also co-ordinating the production of a discussion paper, with input from several fisheries conservation organisations, setting out the challenges and opportunities arising from Brexit, which we will be sending to the new Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom in the next fortnight." Mark Lloyd, Angling Trust Chief Executive added:
WINNER Robert Yorke with a cracking 29lb Blonde Raycaught from a West Country shore mark
“The impending prospect of Brexit clearly has a number of risks for fish, fishing and the environment which will need to be managed carefully, but at the same time there could be some significant opportunities. There is the possibility of new policies which could reduce red tape for farmers and fishery managers while getting better outcomes for the water environment, and fish in particular, but that will very much depend on the political will of Theresa May's new government. The Angling Trust is leading the way in setting the agenda and co-ordinating a response from the large constituency of anglers. It’s now more important than ever that fish and fishing have a strong, united voice in the corridors of power; decisions made over the next few years could shape the future of our sport for the next two generations.”

LIFEJACKET-WEARING FISHERMAN RESCUED FROM THE SEA A fisherman wearing a lifejacket has been rescued by the Summerleaze RNLI lifeguards after jumping into the sea when his 6.2 metre vessel caught fire on 10th August 2016. At about 12.00pm the UK Coastguard received multiple 999 calls from members of the public reporting a vessel on fire off the coast of Bude, Cornwall. The UK Coastguard immediately issued a Mayday relay broadcast in the area requesting assistance from other vessels in the area. The fisherman went into the water but was wearing a lifejacket. Summerleaze RNLI lifeguards raced out to sea on a jet ski to pick up the fisherman from the water. He was transferred to a nearby fishing vessel and is now being brought to shore where he will be met by the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team. Cornwall Fire Service are also on scene. The fisherman required no medical assistance. Bude and Padstow RNLI lifeboats have been sent to the burning vessel to monitor the situation. James Instance, Duty Controller for UK Coastguard said: ‘This fisherman was wearing a lifejacket, which no doubt aided his survival and enabled the lifeguards

to find him quickly. By taking this simple safety precaution, it meant that when he fell into the water his survival time increased significantly. He was also able to raise the alarm on the VHF radio. 'If you're going out on the water, make sure that you take a good method of communications with you. On a boat a VHF DSC radio is ideal, and a mobile phone in a sealed plastic bag is a good back up. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in an emergency at sea. And of course wear your lifejacket. This could have been a very different outcome today had he not been wearing a lifejacket and we commend his actions, which have assisted in saving his life.'

nearby and deployed its daughter boat which took six of the seven people on board. The seventh person, the skipper, remained on board the angling boat and the Gorlestone RNLI Lifeboat assisted him with getting a pump on board to pump off the excess water and stabilise his boat. All seven people were then transferred onto the lifeboat and they were taken back to Yarmouth Harbour, where they were received onshore by the Gorlestone Coastguard Rescue Team. The angling vessel was towed back into harbour by the lifeboat. Jolene Smith for the UK Coastguard said “This was a serious incident, but thanks to a welltrained and quick-thinking skipper and the correct communications and lifesaving equipment, we were able to ensure that rescue resources were quickly at the scene.”
Seven people were rescued from an angling boat on 21st August after its skipper called the Coastguard on VHF channel 16 at 11.30 am to report that he was sinking and required assistance. The vessel was one nautical mile south east of Yarmouth Harbour. All those on board were wearing lifejackets and the liferaft was ready to be deployed. The offshore standby vessel ‘Putford Puffin’ was

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
There is no other way of dressing August up it’s been very poor normally a very good month for hounds especially the big ones but this year in the normal marks it’s just not happened plenty of small to medium fish but no really big fish ,you seem to get on a few fish then its move again because it’s gone quiet and that’s how it’s been. There has been more mackerel this year but they are mixed up with small bass which we are obviously returning and a lot more bird activity with terns & gulls diving on fry so plenty of food around to fatten up the bass. August is the period of the year when summer fishing starts to drop off but the Autumn fish are still not here, yet many anglers like to get out through August in fact my phone has not stopped ringing the reason is many have time off with holidays and generally the weather is good but it will not change the fishing. We will soon start to see the Autumn run of whiting & rays and perhaps the odd codling.
Autumn already !!!! were has the year gone, in our industry the months seem to fly past and as I write this the first August gale has been forecasted with winds to reach up to fifty miles per hour, weekend bookings all cancelled lost revenue but glad to have a whole weekend to myself sod the money. Some of the angling mags are warning of a total bass ban not only for anglers but commercial fishermen too, this will be a disaster for some south coast charter boats as angler book up these boats to put a few fish on the table some boats I know this year have had forty bass trips cancelled a big hole in their annual income. Come on anglers it’s not all about keeping the bass it’s the fun of the hunt and the fight, we have had a fantastic bass year and none of my anglers have been too worried about catch and release and if you don’t support the boats will they be here for you when a recovery of the stocks allows you to keep a few again ??

Young and disabled anglers will benefit from grant to Fishing 4 Schools project The Countryside Alliance Foundation’s Fishing 4 Schools (F4S) project and Hadlow College in Kent have received a £5,000 grant from the Angling Trust to improve facilities for disabled fishers and train young instructors at the college’s Grove Farm Fishery. F4S runs short courses that offer a different way of learning for pupils, many with special educational needs, who often find academic work difficult but respond well to alternative learning. They integrate aspects of angling – for example weights and measures and fish biology - into the National Curriculum and also encourage them to try a new outdoor activity. Students from the schools that visit Hadlow will benefit from the construction of three new wheelchairaccessible “swims” or fishing platforms at Grove Farm and improved pathways round the site. The grant will also fund the training of six students to become volunteer instructors for open days and taster sessions for young people run at the fishery. Renowned fly-fisherman and director of F4S Charles Jardine said: “We are thrilled to receive this funding from the governing body for fishing in the UK. This
will help us in our work with Hadlow and improve the facilities for everyone who uses the fishing lakes. “Being able to train these young people to receive their Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications is very important, so we will have an unbroken stream of young instructors who can coach their peers and continue our work in Kent.” And Brian Bailey of Hadlow College added: ““The funding will enable us to improve our facilities and equipment and will allow us to increase participation into angling and outdoor activities, whilst increasing awareness of employment and opportunities in the land-based sector.” Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the Angling Trust said: “Many congratulations to Fishing 4 Schools for securing these funds in a field with many other very worthy applications. By training their students to qualify as angling coaches they will be helping to build a long term sustainable future for angling in partnership with the Angling Trust’s National Angling Strategy, supported by rod licence funds from the Environment Agency.”
West Bay S.A.C. Junior coach trip
As we entered the month of August, all eyes turned to the annual West Bay S.A.C. Junior coach trip to Plymouth for this much-anticipated event. This year’s competition took place on Saturday 13th August and was the club’s twentieth attendance which was held until recently at Teignmouth. In previous years the club hired a minibus which meant that only a limited number of parents could accompany their children but thanks to the continued and generous support of Adam Keen at Morebus/Damory, there was plenty of room on-board one of their comfortable coaches. The club would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the coach company as this event has become one of the highlights of the junior year and enables the whole family to take part. This year saw an entry from West Bay of 11 juniors with a total of 25 aboard the coach. After leaving a sunny Bridport, cloud and fine drizzle greeted the competitors at the Mountbatten Breakwater but conditions were perfect for the most popular method, float fishing, with clear visibility and a slightly choppy sea. After some light rain spirits were finally lifted when blue skies and sunshine arrived during the latter half
of the match. 49 competitors in all cast their first lines at 11 am for the match lasting 4 hours, with lines up at 3 pm. This being a catch and release specimen competition (unless kept for eating or bait), mackerel and garfish were the main quarry and it wasn’t long before a few fish were showing at the weighing-in station. At first West Bay lagged behind but eventually Ewan Chambers managed to find the all-important garfish only for his brother, Aaron, to follow it up with a bigger specimen shortly afterwards. A few mini species were landed which did not count in this match but one or two wrasse showed that were sizeable; unfortunately they did not attain a very high specimen percentage. Eventually 3 West Bay members, Nathan McMaster, Ollie Butler and Jack Parkman did catch a few mackerel which would put them in the running and it was these three that would make it to the prizewinning table. Ultimately some good-sized garfish topped West Bay’s catches and took the three trophy-winning positions but congratulations go to Nathan McMaster who came joint 4th overall with his 11 oz, 45.83% mackerel with Ollie Butler winning the best over 12’s position (9 oz 4 dram 38.54% mackerel) with Jack Parkman runner-up over 12’s (8 oz 33.33% mackerel). Full results will be available on the club’s website. The boys went away happy with prizes of rods and reels and every competitor received a goody bag. The club would also like to thank the organisers, Angling Trust Wyvern Division and the Plymouth Federation of Sea Angling Clubs and Individuals along with all the local tackle shops who donated prizes for the festival and the junior section looks forward to next year’s event.
Figures Reveal 321 People Died In Accidental Drownings In 2015 New figures released today (July 29) reveal that 321 people lost their lives in accidental drownings in the UK in 2015. The figures, published by the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF), also show that the majority of those who died did not intend to be in the water, with 82 people having drowned while walking or running, and 29 deaths while taking part in a commercial activity. The number also includes 30 people who died from suspected natural causes while or after being in the water. NWSF’s Water Incident Database (WAID) compiles drowning statistics from across the UK and breaks these down into deaths by activity, age, geographical location, and location type.
The majority of deaths occurred at the coast/beach/ shore (95) and in rivers (86). As in previous years males are most susceptible to drowning, with 232 men and boys being recorded as having drowned, compared to 43 women and girls. There was a higher number of deaths for males than females recorded in every single age bracket. Children and youths aged up to 19 represent 10 per cent of those killed, with 32 dying in 2015, and 23 of those being in the 15-19 bracket. July represented the highest number of deaths (46, up from 34 in June and 35 in August), while many people also drowned in January (40). In England 231 people died in drownings that were accidental or related to suspected natural causes, with

50 in Scotland, 33 in Wales, and three in Northern around our coast and inland waters and protect future Ireland. generations. George Rawlinson, chairman of the NWSF, said: “As the holiday season commences I am saddened that still too many lives are needlessly lost, this alone clearly demonstrates the need for action. The forum, through its partner organisations, is determined to tackle drowning so that the families and loved ones of these tragedies may be comforted in the knowledge that we’re all working together to reduce incidents
“With Government support for our first National Drowning Prevention strategy launch early this year, we’re actively progressing towards a goal where more people can enjoy the water safely.” A full copy of the UK Water-Related Fatalities 2015 report can be viewed at: www.nationalwatersafety.org. uk/waid/info/waid_fatalincidentreport_2015.xls

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
I’m guessing that most of those recreational anglers who pick-up their monthly copy of SAN read through it and wonder why its’ usually the same old faces holding up those specimen fish for the camera? Are they just lucky? As many of us know whilst luck plays a small part, most big fish captures are down to sheer hard work and commitment. Robert Yorke (aka The King of Budo) is one such angler who is driven to bettering an already impressive list of specimen fish and this month he has raised the bar even higher in terms of Blonde Ray with an outstanding shore-caught fish of 29lb. This would be an extremely impressive capture from a boat but from the shore it stands up there in the list of all-time specimen fish caught from the shore by Plymouth club anglers. During the short 4 hour session he fished on the last quarter tides (always the best for ray fishing) he also managed further blondes of 17lb and 12lb whilst fellow club angler Mark Bryce also had a couple of crackers going 20-7 and 19-4. Earlier during the week fishing a nearby mark Rodbenders SAC club member Steve Arnold broke a long 5 year wait for a shore caught blonde in spectacular style landing fish of 7lb, 8-4, 13-13 and 19-11. Top angling lads and its’ worth remembering that all of these fish were returned which is the only way forward.
Large huss continue to show from many of the deep water rock marks with Rob Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC getting a good one of 12-6 whilst Castaways SAC member Pat Fulton also landed a good one of 12-1. I have received reports from Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 confirming that the inshore reefs continue to provide some good fishing (in some cases the reefs are fishing better than the wrecks), with some cracking double figure Cod coming over the gunwales. Fishing the reefs often means being able to use much lighter rods thereby getting maximum sport and shorter steaming times compared to the more distant mid-channel wrecks. Having just returned from my annual pilgrimage to Norway I can certainly vouch for using lighter tackle for maximum enjoyment and will be providing a review on some of the excellent Snowbee rods were we using on the trip in next month’s edition of SAN. That’s all from me – enjoy the remainder of your holidays and happy dipping!
Having spent many years in the pursuit of large congers and grey mullet, this year Martin Larkin of Castaways SAC has turned his attention to targeting Gilthead Bream and its’ only taken him a few months to capture a cracking giltie of 6-6 from a low water mark on the River Tamar. Any part of the shore line from the Obelisk up to Millbrook (the latter at high tide) will give you a chance of getting a gilt along with plenty of bass using worm baits. I have also heard that anglers fishing the Obelisk and Mount Edgecombe areas have also been finding good numbers of Couches Bream when targeting the gilts. From September onwards the fishing in the Tamar should really hit top gear with eels starting to show at the deeper water marks along with Thornback Rays whilst the pier and surrounding area at Saltash should also give the chance of hooking into a really large bass.

GENERAL Beach fishing has been up and down with the weather! With mackerel on calm days with some nice sole at night! And on rough days some nice bass showing! Although noting to top the bass caught by Eastbourne angler Taff Lewis on Friday 19th August. Taff took blueys, ragworm and crab to catch undulates from Shoreham arm ( Taff and Mirek changed plans coz it was rough). Fishing with 2 rods Taff used Bluey on one and ragworm crab cocktail on the other. The Bluey bait produced a slack line bite and when Taff picked the rod up he realised a good fish was on the end !! eventually landing a magnificent bass while his other rod also had a bite. The bass weighed an excellent 15lb 12oz and the other rod produced a 10lb 8oz Undulate ray !! not bad for two fish at the same time !! The boats out of Eastbourne are still catching some nice fish with Panther catching some nice cod, with Deep Blue and Misty Blue still catching plenty of dish including Turbot, Brill Bream and Pollack! A trip on Misty Blue on Thursday 18th August produced some nice turbot, brill and bream as well as two nice coalfish and a cuckoo wrasse just 3oz shy of the British record for John. For the Where in the world article Phil Metcalf landing an ocean going Australian Salmon of 7lb. Three hours south of Perth pictured with his copy of Sea Angling News, a very remote location!!
NEWHAVEN AND SEAFORD SHORE ANGLING CLUB The club fished on Seaford beach on Thursday 21st July and the winner was Tim Roser with 3lb 11 ½ oz including a wrasse of 1lb 7 ¾ oz. 2nd was Keith Morley with 1lb 12oz and third Simon Peters with 1lb 10 ¾ oz.
Taff Lewis with his magnificent 15lb 12oz bass.
ANDERIDA The 14th match in the series saw a new member win!! Steve Merner caught a bass and eels for 4lb 3oz. 2nd Colin Everest with a sole and bass for 2lb 14 ½ oz. 3rd Paul King with 2lb 8 ¼ oz and 4th Kevin Morgan with 1lb 14oz. The biggest fish was the bass of 2lb 11oz for Steve Merner and the biggest flatfish a sole of 1lb 3oz for Colin Everest. Match 15 saw Steve Merner winning again!! This time with 2lb 3 ¾ oz. 2nd was Jim Whippy with 2lb 3 ¼ oz, 3rd Colin Isaacs with 2lb 2oz and 4th Martin Payne with 1lb 5 ½ oz. Although august has been quite windy we have been lucky enough not to cancel any trips, the fish have been abundant right the way from Sandbanks chain ferry to Cherbourg breakwater. Talking of Cherbourg we have seen the return of the bass on some of the wrecks after a bizarrely quiet season last year. Fishing in 200 feet with a live mackerel really is an exciting way to target the species, especially when they average 7lb. Tope fishing has taken off in recent weeks with most days seeing in excess of 50 fish up to 50lb or so. The abundance of fresh mackerel and scad across the grounds certainly helps to whip them up into a feeding frenzy. Out on the wrecks we are still going strong with plenty of monster pollock taking the bigger lures and the last of the years cod
still popping their heads up. It seems to be that we are seeing some of the biggest fish of the year now in the high teens when usually we would be thinking about winding the longer range trips down. Wayne Mcmanus landed another john dory of around 4lb on a recent Cherbourg trip, as one of the rarer fish we catch they are always a welcome sight. Still got 3 more trips across the channel before the end of the season, hoping for some good weather so we can target those big autumn wreck bream. I have spaces to go on combined Alderney and Cherbourg trips in September and October, if you’re interested give me a call on 07787 375386. Silver Spray II Sam Cumming

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Aries 11 skipper Duncan Purchase found the 1st of the Trigger Fish of this season with a cracking one of 4lb followed on the next drift by a Plaice of 2lb 4ozs whilst drifting between the Piers, this area has produced some fine catches of Plaice, Gurnards and small Bream. During the smaller tides the offshore marks are full of good size Tope. The banks off of St Albans have fished well for Rays and during the bigger tides produced some good size Bass. Offshore the wreck fishing at anchor has been phenomenal with Congers to 75lb, Tope to 35lb along with Black Bream up to 4lb 12ozs during one of these sessions I was so busy that from the minute the anchor tightened and bait went down until anchor up time much to the amusement of the anglers I never made it back inside the wheelhouse with so many fish being landed and released we also lost many decent Bream to Tope bite offs with 1 Tope being so frenzied he attacked a Bream on the surface narrowly missing it only to
turn and go for another but unfortunately for him he misjudged his approach and became stuck between my trim tab ram and the boat, after a lot of splashing we eventually untangled him but got very wet in the process. Dave Colcough landed a PB Ling of 24lb + along with a few Cod. As September approaches we should see more Trigger Fish catches and a few small Codling along the beaches, during the evenings Sole fishing will get better. The SIFCA officers have been very busy checking catch sizes on the Piers, Quays and boarding private / charter boats, I have been boarded and was very impressed by their professional approach how they conducted the search and the way they explained the whole process to the crew before looking into bags. would no doubt decide the match such was the number of species on offer. From the start, the anglers at the back of the boat starting catching Wrasse in numbers, whilst plagues of small Bream kept everyone busy at the front, to the point of not being able to shake them off until the skipper let out 90 meters of rope. Eventually most anglers managed to get through to an assortment of species including Corkwing, Ballions, Goldsinney, Ballan and several stunning Cuckoo Wrasse; as well as Scad, Gobies, Tompot blennies and Poor Cod. The match was eventually won by Steve Bachelor, narrowly followed by Arran Harmer only a few points behind. In all, 19 species were boated consisting of 366 fish. LDSFC Lymington and District Sea Fishing Club Bait Supplied Boat Match League- Competition 4/6: Poole On the 31st July 2016, 10 members fished the fourth round of the bait supplied boat match series, sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre. Fishing aboard ‘Piscary’ from Poole, skippered by Matt Rowe. The match started off at slack water and plaice were targeted within the harbour channels. Within a short time Ed Taylor was first in with a plump fish of around a pound, which focused everyone›s attention and soon a smattering of Plaice were coming aboard as well as mackerel and a stunning tub gurnard caught by Paul Hollyoake. With the tide starting to ebb, Matt didn›t waste any time heading for the Sadler Bank to target rays and other high scoring fish. Upon arrival it was evident that the Mackerel were present in seemingly plague proportions attacking baits and lures at various depths, providing fresh bait to find the larger fish. As the tide picked up the sport slowed, however several anglers still managed the catch the target species, with Robin Lane boating four Small Eyed Rays in quick succession. On the opposite side of the boat Arran Harmer managed the best ray of the day with a Small Eyed of 8lb 3oz and followed it up shortly afterwards with a small Bass and another ray just as the skipper was pulling in the anchor. A short move to a rocky area proved fruitful with everyone catching their quota of Pout within minutes of arriving, however, it appeared impossible to find any other species such were the numbers of Pout and therefore a final move was made onto Poole patch just as the tide started to flood. This proved to be a good move and with several anglers neck and neck on points, this final mark

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas
Thresher shark heads a month for big fish A huge thresher shark has been boated by Nick Lane fishing aboard Dan Hawkins Ilfracombe based Charter boat Reel Deal. The shark calculated by formulae at 368lb was tempted using a whole mackerel hook bait and was landed after a powerful struggle lasting over an hour the fish leaping from the water twice before eventually being brought into the boat where it was measured and photographed before being released. The fish was taken from a mark off the North Cornwall coast around a two-hour steam from Ilfracombe. Dan told me the fish swam away strongly, a wonderful sight for all on board. Tope sport has been frantic at times off Ilfracombe with packs of these hard fighting fish hitting baits. The season is shaping up to be a good one for the species with mackerel numbers encouraging the fish into the Bristol Channel. Toby Bassett was one of the anglers to share in a great days sport aboard John Barbeary’s Ilfracombe based Charter boat ‘Bluefin”. The anglers landed in excess of 80 tope the best scaling 34lb to the rod of John Passmore. Daniel Stone fished aboard James Gubb-Fradgley’s boat off Lynmouth and landed a personal best tope scaling 36lb. They also landed bull huss to 15lb, conger to 25lb, several smaller tope and numerous mackerel. David Atkinson fished on Teddie Boy out of Minehead and broke the Appledore Shipbuilders Angling Club Boat record with a fine smoothound of 20lb 8ozs. Liam Stevens has landed one of the biggest bass so far this season a fine specimen of 15lb 8oz that was landed from a shore mark in the Ilfracombe area.
Combe Martin SAC Member Derek Ferret fished a local beach to land a superb bass scaling 13lb 3oz. The fish was tempted using Ammo Frozen mackerel and was returned alive after weighing and photographing. This is the third big double I have heard of so far this season a promising omen as we are still early in the season regarding bass with the best yet to come! Paul Downing of Appledore Shipbuilder’s also landed a stunning bass from a local beach scaling 12lb 9.75oz. Eighteen anglers fished Appledore Shipbuilders Bass competition at Westward Ho! Fishing was made difficult with large amounts of weed fouling the lines. Despite this four fish were landed with Paul Downing the winner with a bass of 6lb 61/2oz. In runner up spot was Cameron Atkinson with a bass of 5lb 1/2oz. In third place was Steve Ford with a bass of 4lb 14oz. Stephen Found was targeting thick lipped grey mullet in the River Torridge estuary when his bread flake presented on a size 8 hook to 6lb b,s line was seized by a fine specimen bass of 9lb. The fish battled for 25minutes before being successfully landed. Stephen is a member of Bideford Angling Club and lives in Holsworthy. Combe Martin SAC member Kevin Legge landed a fine bass of 9lb 2oz from a local beach. The fish was tempted using Ammo mackerel and returned alive to the sea. Several wrasse have also been landed by North Devon anglers with several topping 3lb. Mackerel, horse mackerel and garfish have been providing sport for anglers fish the Ilfracombe area. Ross Stanway landed a specimen rockling scaling 1lb 131/2oz. For up to date news on all angling disciplines in North Devon visit www.northdevonanglingnews.co.uk

ALDERNEY
ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding Shore Sport It’s really kicked in to gear now with all the pelagic species finally here. We’ve had Mackerel around for a while in numbers you can target but now rods are getting up to 30 a piece, and they’re not tiny ones neither with a good average size - yes that’s right - BBQ size!! No not the size of a BBQ I mean size for BBQ’ing! Move on. Gars have arrived in good numbers now with double figure catches reported, Pollack that were absent for so long now are in good numbers with fish to 5lb 8oz reported, this will only improve as the food chain we have now is awesome. Plenty, I mean plenty of Bass around with one lad reporting 24 in two short sessions. One lad on the island claims to have caught several doubles but I fear he is delusional. It’s a shame cos it gives you guys a false perspective for the sake of his ego. The average size is 12oz to 2lb just with the odd fish to around 4/5lb. No doubt there are bigger ones there but they are very few and far between. Great to see such good numbers, it will give this new legislation time and our fishery could be tip top with prime fish again. Other species to go for are Couches and Black Bream on the bottom, unbelievably still Red Mullet being reported and the odd Sole. Hard to gauge what else because everyone is strapping lures on revelling in the current excitement! Also a very rare Red Mouthed Goby was caught in the Junior Comp (report below) by Luke Berry, at the time misidentified by my good self as I’d never heard of one it turns out it would have been a British record! I am sure we will see more of them in the ensuing months. Boat Sport Turbot and Brill are hit and miss, good days and bad days reported so if you get the disaster day don’t be disappointed. Bass are increasing in numbers but again small fish. Plenty of Tope around as there is now plenty of Mackerel, also Huss, Blondes and rake of other fish around our reefs. I had my first boat trip of the year and my first fish aboard was an Atlantic Chubb Mackerel - totally weird! Alderney 33 Hour Lure Festival Shan’t give to many details now as I have done it in every issue this month but if you are interested it is the weekend of 3rd/4th September then give me a call on 01481 824884. Really looking forward to it! Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Bag Pollack, Garfish, Mackerel and Bass Great weather greeted just the 7 participants to this match, the attendance being kept down by lots of other activities going on. Limited to a maximum of 6 per species (Bass 3) and size limits each angler had their own idea as to where to go and when using tidal and species knowledge to their advantage. As it was it was all a bit too quiet - well with a exception. Having battered his way down a cliff mark (literally battered his way down to the point a week on he is still limping) and taking out everything in his path to get to where he wanted to go Adam Salmon, fish by name, fish by nature, had a cracking session. Bleeding and sore after his capitulation his first cast he had a 2lb 14oz Black Bream - a great fish but of no use in this match. Next cast though he hit the right species, a fine Pollack of 8lb 8oz which, whilst nursing his wounds and dancing around in his much loved crocks, he somehow managed to land it in the swell. And if that wasn’t enough - next cast Adam connected with a 5lb Bass!! A couple more Pollack were added as well - brilliant session for him. Only thing he had to now with a sore leg, a bleeding foot and nigh on 20lb of fish was to get back up the cliff!! Adam now leads on a couple of the major trophies and probably won free membership to St. Johns too! Match Results: 1st – Adam Salmon - 17lb 8oz 2nd - Darren Braby - 3lb 1oz 3rd – Wayne Cosheril - 10oz Next Match is on Sunday 28th August fishing from 10.00 till 16.30 which is the Best Ballan Wrasse fished on the Breakwater. Booking in from 09.30 at the barrier. Heaviest Fish counts and scales will be along the wall so come prepared with a bucket for water. Cards to be signed. League Table Darren played his joker and despite Adam’s win actually extends the lead. Well played joker! Other significant mover is Wayne’s Mackerel moved him up two places. Top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and the winner of that will get to go to the Florida Keys!! (or if preferred a European destination). Best 14 matches from the 20 count. Its a heaviest fish comp with the top 3 fish in each age category winning but they are all winners!! Conditions were far from perfect with a gusty wind and drizzly rain but everyone arrived all wrapped up to do battle. Plenty of Ballan Wrasse were caught to just short of 3lb, and add in to that some Corkwings, a Giant Goby, and a few very colourful Cuckoo Wrasse it was fitting that a very colourful week that Alderney Week has been was carried on in the drizzle - spirits were by no means dampened. Some really good angling was had and over years I have seen the kids develop their fishing skills and so it was very satisfying to see these skills put in to practice. Nip and tuck in all age categories but the winners were: Age 6 and under: 1st Archie Jackson 1lb 5oz Ballan 2nd Ellis Bohan 15oz Ballan 3rd Finlay House 14oz Ballan Age 7 to 11: 1st Luke Berry 2lb 14oz Ballan 2nd Isaac Maurice 2lb 5oz Ballan 3rd Harry Littlefield 1lb 5oz Ballan Age 12 to 16: 1st Conor Osbourne 9oz Ballan 2nd Zac Eastwood 5oz Ballan Most Species tied, all had Ballans + in brackets: Connor Osbourne (Corkwing), Luke Berry (Giant Goby), Harry Littlefield (Cuckoo), Billy House (Cuckoo) Thanks to Mookie Maurice for remembering the drop net which was needed!! Thank you to Michael Bohan for taking the presentation pictures too. Thanks to the parents/adults too for making life easier. 12 years I have been doing this and next year think I’ll need a mobility scooter for all the running up and down!!! Well to all the kids too - hope you enjoyed it! Alderney Angling Festival Yes we are warming up for this years Festival which will be the 31st one!! We get 100+ anglers visit the island. The heaviest fish brought back to the scales was a bass of 2lb 12oz caught by Adrian Moody. The best fish overall was an undulate ray weighing 16lbs 11oz which was weighed on the boat and released, caught by Alan Martin. Best specimen fish was a black bream of 2lb 9oz {73.21% of specimen} caught by Robert Miness.

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Chris Snow
Sussex beaches have seen an amazing amount of mackerel shoals this month, more than I can ever remember personally, the shoals have been widespread and feeding on masses of whitebait and have proven great sport on light pop up rigs or float fishing tactics. Shoreham Arm and Brighton Marina have been very busy with people feathering either for winter bait or just for the barbecue. The Garfish are just starting to show again in clear water to baits fished near the surface, great sport again on lighter gear and also a superb winter bait for whiting. Better numbers of Golden Grey mullet are also making an appearance with August and September the best months historically. Still no sign of the obliging Red Mullet but I would expect to see them in the coming weeks if we have a long spell of decent weather. Have had reports of quite a few decent Bass being landed and some decent lumps have fallen to livebaiting either a mackerel or a scad, not for the purists maybe but very effective if you have the patience! Also some decent fish have fallen to lures in both the rivers and the open beach. Undulates continue to show from Shoreham through to Selsey and hopefully will continue to show. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the first of the codling in September, these fish could be an excellent average size if the stamp of fish from winter have remained in the region. Whiting are beginning to show which will please the match angler but not so the pleasure or specimen angler. Shore caught Bass - West Sussex

ot to many boats made it out over the last month with it being holiday season but we did have our first away day comp at Weymouth fished as a best specimen, winner takes all. 3 boats towed down with 6 anglers the winner being Kev Marshall with a gurnard of 2lb and 57%. Boats launching from Burnham landing plenty of rays, congers and dogs in the bay but not many hounds or bass. Some members are covering plenty of miles down channel to clearer water in the search for different species. A recent sortie for 2 boats down to Porlock then onto Foreland point produced a nice tope for myself of 27lb 8oz and a small spottie along with a few mackerel, not species we catch very often
in the bay. Fish of the month for July was won by Andy Georgiou with a hound of 6lb 5oz and 42% on measure and release. The next club competition is a 38 hour species comp on the 10-11th September with no boundaries but all boats must launch and retrieve from Burnham. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 15th September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD
MINEHEAD AND WATCHET REPORT
Sea Angling News, September 2016
by Dave Roberts
With everything seeming to be a month or so behind again this year I can now confirm that the mackerel are here in numbers, certainly in the lower reaches of the channel. This has a huge knock on effect with the ground fishing in particular the tope. There has been some bumper catches reported as anglers flock to do battle with these toothy summer visitors. Talking of Toothy critters, the blue shark season is now in full swing with some Minehead and Ilfracombe boats heading out to the grounds and boating good numbers. Further up the channel you can still expect some great fishing over the rough ground for bullhuss and the smaller species such as wrasse and pollack. I’m still to hear of any triggers yet this year but we are coming into the prime time for them now so watch this space. The bream fishing has been slightly disappointing so far with mainly smaller fish being taken with
the odd bigger specimen thrown in occasionally but again there is still time for them to put an appearance in. There seems to be a good head of bass around at the moment on certain reefs and ledges with some cracking fish of up to 10lb seeing the net. Now is the time to start targeting them inshore as well. The smoothounds numbers have dwindled somewhat in the past four weeks but there are still a few about who won’t turn their noses up at a nice hardback crab. There do seem to be better number around the Watchet area where you can also find plenty of thornback rays to keep you busy. Offshore marks are still providing good sport from the bullhuss, eels and rays when the tide and weather permits. Good luck if you’re getting out there this coming month. fish hard or go home!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL
BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle The shore fishing in August can often be a funny old affair in the channel. But not this August. On the whole there's been some superb catches and its generally been more consistent. Yes, there's been some quiet spells ,but there always is. The smoothound fishing has been as good as we've seen all summer , if not the best it's been all summer, especially in around the Minehead and Watchet area. Large numbers of hounds to low doubles have been turning up at many high water marks on mass , and taking almost any bait they come across. Watchet angler Phil Lovell had a great session from Blue Anchor bagging 9 hounds and dropping and missing many more one evening. The bass numbers have also been impressive throughout the channel. There are masses of small school bass from a few ounces to a lb throughout the channel. There are also plenty of 3-6lbers about , and the best reported specimen being 11lb 2oz being caught by Steve Liddle in A local West Coast & Watchet sac club match. In the same West Coast & Watchet club match Phil Lovell found himself bagging a quality Sole of 2lb14oz. Talking of sole the upper channel marks around Portishead and the bridges have seen their fare share of sole with many being caught by those targeting them. Hopefully the infamous big sole of Minehead may
make a come back this autumn after a lean couple of years. We are nearing the last week of August as I do this months report and bang on cue the codling are making their presence known again. If this springs numbers are anything to go on. We should be in for a cracking early Autumn run with a class of 1.5lb to 3lb codling making the bulk up. The signs are positive so fingers crossed we see anglers the length of the channel buzzing with excitement again. I don't know why? May be because they are easy to catch, if they are in front of you and good to eat. No other fish in the channel generates the enthusiasm and motivation of the masses to get out on the beach and try their luck. The positive vibes throughout the channel the codling kicks up is a great thing for all the local recreational sea anglers, tackle & bait shops , boats and other local services that benifit from this humble fish. A very noticeable thing the past month or so is the shear numbers of mackerel in the channel this year, even up to Minehead!!! A very rare thing indeed Normally a trek down to south coast is called for. But not so this summer if you live close to Porlock or Bossington and the north Devon coast. Anyway that's about it this month. I hope the month ahead throws up some great fishing for you. Tight lines and happy hunting .

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage
LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs Albeit late, Summer has finally arrived, along with plenty of mackerel. This must be a great relief for those boats offering mackerel trips around the ports. Inshore fishing: The bream have thinned out a little, with a lot smaller fish on the ground. Other species such as Smoothounds, Bass, Pianted ray,Thorneback,Undulate and Blonde ray all continue
to be caught in good numbers. Mid – Channel: The fishing for Cod and Pollack has slowed down considerably. Other wreck inhabitants such as the Ling and Conger are still being caught in good numbers. This coming month should see the Bream arrive in the channel. Tight lines John Skeggs (Last Laugh / Lymington)
Overall the fishing around the West Wight this month has started off well but catches have run down a little in the second half. Inshore the Bream have started to move on with just a few pockets to be found on the deeper marks. Christchurch bay is still producing a lot of Undulate ray (from boat and shore) with Thornback. Small eye. Wrass. Plaice. and Smoothound. Tope have also made a show with good numbers of small fish around seven to fifteen pounds running off with your bait, one good thing is that the Mackerel are still here in large shoals along with Garfish and the occasional Herring. Off shore wrecking was the same, started off the month with some reasonable catches but second half saw the fishing run down to nearly nothing, with the Cod moving off the wrecks but still holding over the rough ground.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, September 2016
Port Report This has been a very different year to previous years. The main difference is that we have lost the mussel beds between Portland and the West Shambles Buoy. We do not know if this loss is due to the very rough winter of 2015 (remember those enormous seas in the December 2014 to February 2015?) or pollution or some other facet of Nature that we have not accounted for. Whatever the reason the large area of pea-mussels that provided so much food for so many species, especially the plaice and bream, has been wiped out. Plaice fishing was a very important part of the fishing on offer with the August to October months seeing the very best catches made with quality fish as well as plenty of them. The hunt for the plaice sees a few turn up from a variety of marks but there is no consistency to the catches. Similarly the bream are much more scattered and can turn up from any of the rough ground marks but it has been unusual to experience a catch of the quantity that the mussel beds often produced. With the bass limit on one fish per person the three main inshore species have not been able to provide the mainstay of our fishing as they have done for a number of years now. But Nature has a way of offering different options with other species taking over as the main offerings. We have seen plenty of rays, tope, conger, huss and smoothounds these past four months but it has been difficult at times to persuade anglers to gear up and fish for these bigger fish. There is still very much the desire to fish ‘for the table’ as opposed to emphasising the ‘sporting’ aspect of our hobby and with so many years of drifting and using light tackle, the prospect of switching to 20lb/30lb class tackle, fishing at anchor and using leads up to 2lb is a completely different challenge. Weymouth’s main cod season usually runs mid May to Mid July. Last year we were thoroughly spoilt as the cod arrived in early April and we were still catching them on the wrecks in mid October. This year there was no-where near the quantities of last year but they were much bigger and more powerful. Many skippers have expressed their dismay at the amount of snapoffs witnessed because of a lack of understanding what the drag system of a reel does and how to use it. Experienced anglers will not believe that many of their fellows really do not know how their won reels work. There is a great calling for all such anglers to fiddle with their reels in the evenings whilst watching the latest offering of garbage on the TV…get to grips with what the various levers and knobs do!!
the conditions and to fish the challenging seabed profile without wiping out with every drop. This is the time of year when the charter boats and Commercial boats will meet up. It is important to stress that the bass lads are extremely skilful anglers and know their ‘own area’ very well indeed. They are also adept at ‘working together’ and are consummate seamen. With all this in their favour it is to be expected that they will out fish many anglers who only get to go in the Race a couple of times a year. Don’t be put off or demoralised as you watch bass after bass being brought to the net…be proud of the fact that when you do eventually catch a bass you will have immediately reached the target number you are allowed to retain. Ray fishing becomes a popular option for some with the Kidney Bank being the best mark. There will be increasing amount of conger and tope around with the inshore wrecks and reefs producing well. The midAugust Weymouth Conger Festival produced 794 conger to 78lb over three days to give an idea of the sport of action anglers can expect if they choose to try for eels. The best eel did not come from a wreck miles off but just a couple of miles offshore. One of the competing boats recorded 103 conger n the first day of the event from a mark under two miles from the shore.

A 10lb turbot for Caroline - Duchess II
Bream - Duchess II
Paul Gale 15lb undulate on bream gear - Duchess II
Drifting on the Shambles this year has been excellent with the largest numbers of turbot and brill caught for many years. Numbers have been much greater than from the traditionally prolific Channel Island Banks with many catches in excess of 35 to a boat. There is, of course, a sting in the tail. The majority of these flatfish are undersize and must be returned but in amongst them there have been and will be a few large enough to retained for the table. Expect bass, pollack and an occasional cod to take the baits intended for the flatfish and it is very likely that a plaice will turn up. There will be all the usual and many different species available in September for our visiting anglers to enjoy and don’t forget to bring your coolbox with those freezer packs in to take a few fresh mackerel home. They are still the best eating fish in the sea and are becoming more appreciated as they become harder to find. It was always expected that a day would start off with an abundance of easily caught mackerel for bait….but not any more. Thank you to all for continuing to make Weymouth the busy angling port that it is. Don’t be afraid to ask your skipper about the options on offer and the possible need to fish heavier for the bigger fish!! Good Luck in these next two excellent months.

Pollack - Fish On II
It seemed that the cod had left us by early August but then in mid-August those of us still trying wrecks on our weekly journeys to the Channel Islands were surprised by an unexpected resurgence of cod giving us some of the best fishing of the year. The pollack fishing has been better this year, maybe because the cod were less numerous, with the fishing improving the nearer to the Channel Islands the boats go. Saying that, the normally very reliable inshore pollack fishing around Alderney has been awful with the few fish caught of a very small size. September and October are regarded as our very best months for inshore fishing. Expect more bream to arrive but remain widely scattered with the ‘old marks’ coming back into favour such as the Stennis Ledges, Smiledge, Black Nor and the M2 reefs as well as the 3 and 7 mile grounds. These are the marks west of Portland that your local skippers will take you too along with the rough ground marks south of the Shambles Bank. The bass will be in the Race for those able to handle

FINS UP REPORT By Dan Clarke
As I sit at home writing the August fishing report for FINS -UP, the wind howls and the boat securely tied up in the marina for the whole weekend. NICE!
on flapper baits intended for congers. The best been caught by Brian from Bristol. Normally a carp angler, Brian was pretty chuffed with this one.
On the days we have managed to get out this August we have seen large numbers of mackerel about, more then I’ve seen for ages with reports of them literally jumping out the water on the Chesil. The large shoals are now showing signs of breaking up and are getting increasingly harder to find. We are however, still finding enough for us to use as bait for a days fishing.
Cod and pollock has been some what allusive on inshore grounds to the west which in the past has produced good numbers for me at this time of the year. Blonde Rays, undulate rays, bull huss, smoothhound and smaller tope have also made an appearance on rough ground. I chose not to fish offshore on the latter part of the month as they tend to go off the boil in August . This in turn has not given us the opportunity to use our sidewinder lures who we are proudly sponsored by.
Inshore Wreck and mark anchoring on the smaller tides has produced plenty of Conger, some in the region of 50 – 60 lb. I know not every anglers first choice on the species list! They do however put up a great fight and the larger specimens rival some of the smaller palegic fish in terms of shear power. Wreck and mark anchoring has also seen some good sized black bream on squid and prawn baits and Bass
I am really looking forward to next month with only a few dates still available it looks to be a busy one, weather permitting! Offshore Wrecking picked up at the beginning September last year and can be a fantastic month for a variety of species.

Recreational Fishing aboard Strongbow 10th August 2016. Eight Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club Members arrived at Poole quay for a days fishing aboard fellow member Dick Peckhams charter boat Strongbow. The early plan was to head 6 miles out to a bank and look for Bass.On the way out we were going to catch some fresh bait for Bass and see us through the day. Mackerel were aplenty and we soon headed off. After a few drifts it was clear the bass were not going to play but best other fish was a Thornback Ray of 7lb 2 oz fell to Malcolm Gerrish.New member Guy Bates also caught a nice sized Gurnard. As the tide started running we had to head back towards Poole to another mark outside harbour.A variety of species could be expected here, skipper Dick putting pressure on himself by saying fish will be caught within 10 minutes of baits in water, proved to be much sooner and so it was with Smoothhounds, pout and Bream, largest Bream being 1lb 12oz to Robin Lane and the only Dog fish going to Carl Bates. Last Move was to be in the harbour seeking out Plaice, after a slow start the plaice started being caught,Guy catching his first and Robin doing well with 5, largest being 1lb 8oz ,many small Bream being caught also. The Fisheries Patrol were in the area and were boarding various boats ,checking out what numbers of fish they had on board and if keeping to new regulations on Bass catches.

On Thursday 28th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club arranged a recreational trip aboard charter boat ‘Strongbow’ skippered by Dick Peckham.
YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD SEA DOG NEW TRICKS !!
The purpose was to take novices out into mid channel to experience wreck fishing, but unfortunately the forecasted high winds prevented this. Instead we fished Poole Harbour where a number of plaice were caught. The biggest weighing 1lb 4oz was caught by Robin Lane. In Poole Bay we fished for mackerel, catching good size fish. Dick then put the anchor down to fish for rays. Roland Blomfield first landed a tub gurnard of 11oz followed by a spotted ray of 3lb 13oz, while Miles Jordan landed a fine small eyed ray of 5lb 2oz. Cliff Williams caught a number of fish, the best being an undulate ray of 7lb 6oz. Not to be outdone the skipper caught a small eyed ray weighing 9lbs 15oz. Altogether 14 rays were caught and returned. Robin Lane pictured below.
Minehead skipper Steve Webber of Osprey charters took a day out to go sharking on Andrew Alsops brand new 11.2m Cheetah Cat White Water II. After a hectic session boating many of these magnificent beasts Steve caught this 95lber a new PB for him. Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks... Ed.
These trips are non competitive and designed for new comers to be able to fish with more seasoned anglers. If you are interested and want more information please contact Robin Lane 078 7647 1901. Report by Malcolm Gerrish.

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand
Well what can we say about the last few weeks on the Big Beach........ I suppose we ought to start with the most talked about presence in Dorset for many novice and experienced anglers. Whether it has been in the school playground, the work place or a public house over a few ales, the same question on everyone’s lips had been “Are the Mackerel in yet." I'm in no doubt that you would have seen from the press, social media or the excited word of mouth that we have been blessed with what’s been described as the biggest shoal of mackerel to visit our shores in 30 years. We have even been seeing the mackerel driving whitebait and baby herring up on to the shingle in a mass frenzy, sometimes even involving the mackerel being beached with many anglers, including my own excited children, being able to just pick the mackerel up with there hands. With the mass of mackerel it has also sadly brought about a shocking amount of litter. Abbotsbury, West Bexington and Ferrybridge have all been spoilt with chairs left behind, disposable BBQ’s being buried meaning the next tide just uncovers whats been left leaving a beautiful beach looking like a public land fill site, not to mention what happens when it all then gets washed out to see. Once those bait fish arrive, as we are all aware, so does everything else and it has definitely been evident this month......... Anglers have been enjoying great sport from the usual suspects including many Undulate Rays, Bass and some very nice Bream. Along with Sole and bigger
Plaice showing up on the shallow marks. Personally, the only trouble I found if I used anything more than a single hook clip down, was that the Mackerel were then smashing the bait on the drop. It did begin to become a little annoying as I knew the fish were out there but just couldn’t get past the Mackerel . Its also been a great year to see some trigger fish back, mainly being landed down Ferrybridge end. Remember the trigger fish will bite through many hooks, so always use a strong hook when your targeting them. Bass have mainly been coming out of the deeper areas and in closer on a mackerel head or flapper with no light pollution, as we have previously mentioned in reports, with a chop on. Many Undulate rays are being landed all along the stretch of the beach with anglers catching them on big fish baits or Sole & Plaice rigs with a Lug or Rag bait. Now the big Eels should start moving, especially on the m tides, with the very increased chance of an early cod! Especially after a storm falling to fresh blacks or blow lug on a straight forward pulley Pennal.

Next month is definately my favorite month of year. September is known by many anglers as the Cross Over month, due to many winter species starting to move in numbers along the shore. Its usually after the first storms with the summer fish still in full residence. I can't wait to see all the reports start coming in, you literally could catch anything! Tight lines Wayne

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Charlie Tudball in association with HTO Gobies are by far my favorite lrf species to target. They are stunning little creatures and each one has their own personality and habitat preferences. Some like rocks and rough ground where as others prefer weed, sand, mud and little holes and crevasses. I have yet to turn up somewhere with my lrf rod and not expect to see a goby in the days catch. The three types you are most likely to encounter are the sand, rock and common goby but there are some others that show up from time to time like the stunning leopard spotted goby, the two spotted goby and the painted goby. Each are weird and wonderful in their own little way. Their willingness to chase almost anything that catches there attention lends them well to being easily targetable with lrf tactics. At the start of a session I always use Marakuyu isome worm in varying colors as this really seems to be their kryptonite. Once the blank is saved I try and move onto other soft plastics with my recent favorite being the night worm in white and black however almost any soft plastic of the appropriate size will snare a goby or two. My favorite rigs to mount these soft plastic lures for gobies depends on the situation and the ground or habitat I am fishing. For fishing in little corners or down the side of steps or walls the best method
is definitely a drop shot rig with a size ten wormer hook mounted about 4 or 5 inches from the weight. I find this distance is close enough to the bottom so it will attract attention of gobies on the sea bed but also allows fish clinging on to the wall to notice the lure being twitched up and down past or just below them. For sandy or muddy bottoms with just the odd patch of weed and rock I prefer a light worm weight with a hook length and a wormer hook trailing behind. If I can see the lure at the bottom I start of with a hook length of around 18 inches. This is because I like the lure to have its own movement independent of the weight, however some days gobies seem to want to engulf your weight more than the well presented lure following behind. If this is the case then I will shorten my hook length to find a length where they actually notice the lure. If you cannot see the lure then I usually start with a 8 -10 inch snood and adjust the length if I feel I am missing bites. Another great setup for gobies is the old trusty jighead; these can be fished in almost any situation and are perfect for both bumping over rocks, through weed and over sand. Hopefully this will give you a small insight into targeting this feisty mini species‌. Get out there and give it a go!
