Angling Trust’s England Home Boat Team took second place honours at the SALC (Sea Angling Liaison Committee) out of Cobh, Co Cork, Ireland from 13th to 16th June 2018. Team England consisted of; Steve Batchelor (fishing/manager), John Bellamy, Brett Lomas Gary Geoghegan, Peter Bailey, Martin Bobbett and Richard Day (reserve). Team England’s journey to Ireland started with five of the team flying to Cork in April to have a practice and design the rigs etc which proved very useful. On the first day of practice the day went well with the weather staying fair and dry. Fish caught on the day were; pollock, coal fish, ling, cod, conger, wrasse, whiting and a lot of mackerel. This would have been a problem as they are a bait fish so the team worked out methods to overcome this. On the second practice day the team tried

different zones as there were four match zones. Practice went well and the England Manager put the team through a match to build up speed. On the official practice day it was a chance for the team to show off their great team clothing thanks to Tubertini and Christchurch Angling Centre. This was the last chance to practice with the chosen match rigs. Day one of the official competition started windy but dry, so all the boats would stay in one zone. After a very busy day it was the Irish team who had a great day one with a good lead over England in 2nd, Scotland 3rd and Wales 4th. Day two started again with windy conditions, but dry so the boats were all in the same zone. Team England fished hard and closed up a bit under the guidance and management of Steve Batchelor, but all in all it was Team Ireland who won on the day.

Final results; 1st Ireland 2nd England 3rd Wales 4th Scotland Steve Batchelor, Team England Manager stated “Well done to Ireland with England taking the very well-earned silver. A big thanks to the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers for a great well run and fair event and to all the skippers and stewards. A big thanks to the Commodore Hotel for looking after all the teams for the Championship. Also to Tubertini for their continued support and sponsorship to the England team and to Christchurch Angling Centre who have contributed and supported towards the team’s efforts.” The Angling Trust would like to offer their congratulations to the team on such a fantastic achievement this year.

Hot Hot Hot a few months ago we would not believe what we had in store weather wise, actually thinking of getting an air conditioner for the boat and getting rid of the heater ha ha. Any way fishing has been good plenty of hounds being caught but trying to get a few hermits for our anglers has proved to be very difficult still, and at times impossible suffering from theft of pots from some unscrupulous private angling boats who now no were we set them and its easy pickings for them, we now have had two pots gone missing £100 lost and to be honest I am no longer prepared to set them any more as anglers do not like to pay for hermit crabs as they think we get them for nothing !!!! so its peelers from the tackle shops or squid baits from us. I always think that preparing for a charter trip is part of the fun i.e. collecting & foraging for baits from the beach & rocks digging a few worms etc etc but maybe I am old fashioned and that every possible scenario should be supplied by the skipper, but actually it’s the chap that does just that yes, a bit of home work for his trip gets a bit of worm a bit of crab etc that gets the results. Some big bass coming aboard but as we

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 3

all know they have to go back let’s hope that the penalty’s anglers have had to make regarding bass fishing will be a big help in building up the stocks again to a healthy level ?? or have we got it the wrong way round and that its net fishing that has done the damage and should have been completely banned, and allowed the angling fraternity to have carried on without penalty’s most were caught and released any way instead of giving us two fingers, I think we will soon see the foolish laws have done nothing to avert the downward spiral of bass stocks we will see. Rays still being caught but at a sensible level now, tope fishing has been the best for several years although we went out on a long distance tope trip last week with nothing to show. We had a tear jerking fare well to one of our long serving charter skippers and good friend Terry Batt & Nick on the Vanishing Point charter boat from Bradwell, Terry has been chartering in the area for thirty years and has now decided to call it a day leaving just one charter boat left in Bradwel from a fleet of well over ten boats in the good old days, a sign of the times now I guess, so good luck Terry in your retirement bet you buy another boat though.

BASS BAG LIMIT HOPES CONFIRMED AS ESTIMATES OF RECREATIONAL REMOVALS ARE SLASHED

2018

SIZE MATTERS

The Angling Trust and Save Our Sea Bass have ramped up pressure on the European Commission after new scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) revealed that bass mortality from sea anglers is much lower than estimated last year. The two lobbying organisations have signed a joint letter – through the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) – addressed to European Commissioner for Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, demanding that the bag limit is reinstated as soon as possible. They have also been lobbying fisheries ministers and UK MPs. In October 2017, ICES provided an estimate of sea bass mortality attributable to public sea angling of 1,627 tonnes, which resulted in the introduction of a complete ban on sea anglers taking a bass for the table in 2018. This was while commercial hook and line and net fishermen could continue landing bass, effectively privatising the bass fishery. A proposed ban on anglers targeting bass in 2018 was overturned, following a 13,000 signature petition organised through the EAA. In view of the restrictions already placed upon sea anglers over preceding years, the Angling Trust, Save our Sea Bass and European Anglers Alliance believed ICES estimates of angler-induced bass mortality to be far too high, and have been liaising with the scientists since October to arrive at an estimate that reflects the 1 fish bag limit, a 6-month fishing season and an increased Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS – Minimum Landing Size) of 42 cm. ICES has used a revised methodology to come up with a figure that represents an 87% decrease in the estimated impact of recreational fishing in 2016 compared to the figures published last year. Scientists are now estimating recreational removals from 2016 were only 212t, compared to a previously estimated 1627t. The Angling Trust is now calling on all anglers to get behind the campaign to reestablish a bag limit as soon as possible for the remainder of 2018. Martin Salter, Head of Campaigns for the Angling Trust, said: "Members of the public wishing to take a bass they’ve caught home

for dinner have suffered this year as a result of a massive overestimate by scientists about the impact they were having on bass. Now the truth has come out and it’s absolutely critical that anglers’ voices are heard by EU policy makers – we want to be able to keep bass for the table this year and we want it now! Get behind the campaign today and get bass justice now. Please use the hashtags #BackTheBagLimit and #BassJusticeNow and make sure you tag Commissioner Vella @KarmenuVella in your Tweets." Reg Phillips, Sea Angling Consultant for the Angling Trust, added: “One of the reasons why the public learn the art of sea angling is to have the skills to harvest free healthy food from the sea; to learn where, when and how to catch a suitable fish for the family table. In 2018 the public were denied that historical privilege; coastal communities denied much need income from anglers targeting bass because scientists miscalculated the RSA take from our public owned fisheries. Now thanks to the AT, BASS, SOSB and thousands of anglers, the scientists have accepted their massive error. As such the public should immediately be reinstated with a one fish bag limit until the end of 2018 and then assessed to increase the bag limit as bass stocks continue to recover to healthy numbers. Priority to harvest fish for the table within our public owned fisheries must always reside with the public. Despite the injustice of the bass restriction on the public, it was with great pride to witness anglers and charter skippers across the country honour their commitment to support bass conservation as they do many other species, which has gone unrecognised for decades.” David Curtis, Director at Save our Sea Bass, concluded: "The massive downward revision of the estimate of bass mortality caused by sea anglers shows that we have been disproportionately hammered since 2016. Not only was the removal of the bag limit a mistake, but the 1 fish bag limit was an inappropriate reduction in anglers' share of bass fishing opportunities. At the same time, UK commercial hook & line landings have actually increased! The EU Commission must now reinstate a bag limit as quickly as possible and should give priority to sea anglers' fishing opportunities, since we deliver the greatest social and economic benefits."

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers The mackerel are in! A few weeks back now there were some dolphins spotted in weymouth bay which was a great sight and could only mean the bait fish had to be coming closer to shore. Some anglers were managing a few mackerel from the beach but nothing in great proportions and all seemed to be at a fair distance until about a week ago I received a call from a friend saying they were there in huge shoals running up and down the beach so it seems that the mackerel are finally in! The general fishing along Chesil seems to be improving with multiple species now starting to make an appearance with bream starting to show again and also word of a trigger fish be caught. The only problem the anglers seem to be facing is the copious amount of weed still hanging around, this must be due the relentless heat that we’ve been experiencing and with no storm to break it all down It could be there for some time before it completely clears. It looks like the sole are finally starting

to feed with a few people managing good numbers but still nothing big as of yet. Sole are best targeted at the shallower end of the beach using worm baits pinned hard to the sea bed. This can be achieved by adding small weights to your snoods. They have small mouths so if you see a nice bite when targeting them just let the bite develop slightly before lifting into the fish. The ray fishing has still been fairly steady with some big undulates coming out aswell as some lovely small eyed ray. These can be targeted on various types of fish baits and with the mackerel about, now is your chance to get some fresh bait and target these big ray. There could also be some big bass patrolling close to the shore line looking for mackerel scraps and other bait fish so its always worth dropping a whole mackerel in the gutter by night but be careful with lights shining on the water aswell this could spook the fish. Remember that all bass must be returned.

Available for wreck, reef, banks, evening trips, 4-day Alderney and 3-day Cherbourg trips. **Bass, turbot, cod, plaice, shark specials** Both boats available for charters and individuals.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins

Due to the proposed local Marine Conservation Zone Consultations all my free time this month has been taken up helping anglers and charter boat owners to send in letters of objections, the one staggering detail to emerge from the research carried out was the value of the Poole charter boats to the economy at over £4,000,000 per annum. For once we are having a summer like the old days with lots of sun and less wind, many anglers have been caught out by the conditions and not carried sensible hats or bought

suntan cream. Fishing has been consistent with plenty of Tope action all over the bay, Bream are still in good numbers as well are the Plaice along the beaches. Several large Bass have been landed and whilst enjoying a day offshore the Christchurch AC team found a mark that produced plenty of quality Bass to 6lb and all were returned. Several Thresher sharks have been seen and we were graced with one jumping clear of the water less than 50m from the boat whilst at anchor.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

What a difference it makes having a summer for a change? Flat calm mornings and just a slight sea breeze in the afternoon have been the conditions of recent weeks and it has led to no cancelled trips at all. Its amazing how much wildlife you see with a sustained period of good weather like this, thresher sharks jumping out of the water, pods of dolphins showing off their best tricks and sunfish splashing around on the surface to name but a few. With the smaller tides we have mostly been fishing long distance from Poole either wreck fishing or multi day trips. Notable fish include Barry Gollop’s 19lb 4oz Pollock which took a mackerel flapper at anchor, the biggest I’ve seen since 2012. We managed 3 John dory’s in a week with the biggest going to Steve Lysaght at 5lb 8oz, interestingly enough the first one we caught and Steve’s fish were 76 miles apart in total, quite some distance covered. Skipper Sam managed to break our own coalfish record for the second time this year fishing on a 100

gram slow jigging rod for Pollock. The fish weighed in at 16lb and gave an epic scrap on the lighter tackle. Closer to home the inshore fishing has been brilliant with plenty of mackerel around for fresh bait. The quality of the tope fishing has been outstanding with fishing averaging about 20lb and up to 45lb. We have some big fish days coming up next week if anyone is interested in getting stuck in. On the bigger tides of this last weekend we had some fun on the bass, although disappointed not to be able to keep a couple for the table we managed plenty of good fish for the sport of it, Kevin Griffiths equalled his PB with a nice 8lb 8oz fish. Using circle and weedless hooks we minimised damage to the fish to zero with all fish swimming off strongly for another year. Looking forward to the plaice fishing picking up next month and some more sessions on the tope, it won’t be long before we are also targeting the porbeagle sharks which are showing in abundance in other parts of the country.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, August 2018

NORTH DEVON REPORT

By Wayne Thomas

The summer of 2018 is undoubtedly going to be one that lives in the memory for many years with week upon week of dry calm and sunny weather that has allowed plenty of angling to take place. Boat anglers have been able to get out most days with very few trips cancelled due to strong winds. The calm seas have also allowed some charter boats to venture to fishing grounds well offshore. Dan Hawkin’s Ilfracombe Charter boat Reel Deal has put anglers amongst both blue and porbeagle shark. Tope have been a feature of catches closer inshore with fish to over fifty pounds boated from both charter boats and Private boats. Lures have tempted quality Pollock to over ten pounds from reefs off Combe Martin and Ilfracombe. Shore anglers have continued to enjoy sport with smoothound and bass with lure anglers relishing the clear water. Combe Martin SAC member Ross Stanway caught a 35lb 5oz tope from a rock mark that proved the best specimen in the clubs Lynmouth Open Fishing Festival. The Festival was run over

a week and the format was to catch three different species. Dan Welch won the event boating a tope of 38lb 2oz; a spotted ray of 4lb 8oz and a shore caught grey mullet of 4lb 7oz. The Taw and Torridge estuaries have been fishing well for thin-lipped mullet with fish to over 4lb tempted on baited spinners. The calm seas have allowed anglers to target golden grey mullet from local surf beaches with fish close to 2lb beached. Wrasse are a fish that seem to relish calm seas clear water and sunshine and several quality specimens have been tempted from rock marks around Ilfracombe.

Ali Laird thin lipped grey mullet 4lb

Thin lipped grey mullet - Dan Welch

Toby Bassett - tope 33lb

Mackerel numbers have been disappointing so far with fishing for these true fish of summer very patchy. The exceptionally hot summer could encourage a few extra species closer to our shores. Trigger fish have been a feature of catches in past seasons and it will be interesting to see if these hard fighting fish once again visit our shore.

SPECIALISING IN LIVE SANDEELS

A few months ago I had an enquiry for a guiding session for a few of our regular shop customers. Unfortunately things were put on hold as one of the guys was diagnosed with the big c in his throat . We all know someone who has been effected by this and it’s never eas. Thankfully all treatments seem to be doing the trick for Mike, and eventually with a bit of planning and consideration of venues to suit ,the day came for Mike , Denny and Simon. The aim was for me to try and find them a Smoothound or two with the back up of rays if the hounds weren’t playing ball. I’ve known Simon, Mike & Denny for a good few years now and they are a great bunch.I must admit, I thought I might be biting off more than I can chew taking all three of them out at once as they are all a little bit on the crazy side of nuts !!. If the fishing was slow we would be guaranteed a good laugh with lots of offensive banter being thrown about. Conditions on the day were cracking. Hot and sunny with a calm sea running in to a high tide at dusk. After the usual safety briefing and assessment and checks on

appropriate rigs and leader knots for the job, the 3 amigos were ready to roll. A quick demo on how to bait up a peeler crab with a baiting tool and soon all rods were fishing. Things were a bit slow to start. As mid tide approached Simon had a good enquiry that turned out to be a small Thornback on his crab bait. An hour or so later Simon added a dog fish and sadly that’s all the fish we saw. Denny and Mike both had what looked like slow moving slack line bites that didn’t materialise in to anything . The evening also hosted the World Cup game of England V Columbia and Simon gave us updates from his phone and when it came to that penalty shot out, we watched it on his phone. Anyone who would of witnessed Simon and my reaction when England won the shot out would of wondered what the hell was going on . All in all it was a great night with a stunning sun set with great and funny company. Bit annoying the hounds didn’t show, especially as its been great this year for them. I look forward to meeting up with the guys again soon and wishing Mike all the best with his continued progress.

LANGSTONE

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club There is nearly always something not quite right when you go boat fishing. Tides are too small or too big, wrong bait, cloudy water, weed…but this month we couldn’t complain about the weather. I can’t remember so many fishable days crammed into the month. Sitting comfortably on a blue sea, topping up the tan and banter with mates makes poor fishing bearable. And there have been some quiet days recently, where we have been scratching for a few mackerel, pout and dogfish. Other days have been very good including some spectacular tope fishing. Top fish in this report is Ian Draper’s 64lb tope which he matched up with another good specimen of 50lb. To prove that experience can beat youthful energy, John Churchill at 80 years old tamed this tope (pictured) which was in excess of 50lb. To reduce stress on fish to be returned, weight is often estimated which is why we don’t have exact weights in all the photos. Fewer boats are targeting bass as there is a landing ban for 2018, but there are still good stocks in the area and regularly turn up on general bottom-fishing trips. Our local butcher Mo Twells shows off the typical stamp of fish with a healthy 5 pounder. I am pretty sure that is the same hat he wears behind the counter too. We usually have to motor much further afield for turbot of any size: Heber Crawford is showing off a very pretty fish caught from one of the Langstone boats over the offshore banks. However, Kriss Scott caught a magnificent inshore fish (for the area) of 8lb. This was awarded SMAC “Fish of the Month” because you just don’t see turbot of that size here, even though the Specimen Book thinks otherwise. This fish

pipped Luke Scott’s huge (relatively) threebearded rockling of 1lb 8oz which was an official Specimen and impressive in the rockling circles but not impressive enough to win the votes for Fish of the Month from our discerning members. Even nearer to shore, Peter Churchill tempted this mullet of 3lb 12oz. We regularly see some very large mullet in the marinas but they can be very picky so this was a good catch. Some of my wealthier angling friends pay a lot of money to fish famous river and estuary beats for sea trout. Heber Crawford proved this is not always necessary. While fishing for mullet with a LRF rod and a tiny fly spoon, he noticed a dark shadow and a swirl behind the lure. Casting again he was rewarded with this stunning sea trout. After the photo-call it was promptly returned. Young Archie Crawford returned with Dad a day or two later and first cast hooked another sea trout! Before anyone thinks this is a regular thing in the area, these are the only two sea trout reported from this tidal creek that I can recall. The many calm days have allowed us to observe more under-water traffic than usual. We have seen large numbers of jellyfish, and also some large and very dense shoals of fry – see the photo of the fish-finder screen. This indicates a smaller number of predatory fish around, and it also makes it more difficult for anglers to tempt mackerel with feathers when they have such an abundance of the real thing to eat. This might also explain why the mackerel we have caught are invariably stuffed so full they are like little round torpedoes. Let’s hope this great weather continues.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

The weather since my last report has been fantastic with temperatures soaring but for various reasons there hasn't been to much activity out in the bay. Smouthounds are still just a few miles from the slipway and hopefully they will hang about for another month or so before they start to drop back down channel. Once they move off then thoughts of cod won't be far behind, will they turn up in decent numbers this year? June 24th and 5 boats launched to fish the Top Boat trophy with 11 anglers onboard. Most took advantage of the conditions and steamed down channel to Porlock bay. If the bait went unmolested by doggies for long enough then there was something reasonable waiting to snaffle it. Fishing was very busy with 4 species of rays, hounds, huss, tope, conger a mackerel and of course the dogs. Winner on the day was Nigel Devey with a hound of 16lb and 103%, 2nd was Andy Georgiou with small eyed of 9-1 and 91% and 3rd was Steve Winters with a lsd of 2-9 and 85%.

June 25th and John Chinn and Terry Garrett towed down to Weymouth for a crack at the flatfish. Fishing was quite tough but they did find a few turbot and a couple of rays with the best fish a blonde ray of 16-7 to John on his plaice rig!! Fish of the month for June sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a hound of 16lb and 103%. The next competition is our Thornback Trophy on August 26th. We don't have a club meeting in August so the next one is on Thursday 20th September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Never before have I started a report by stating how fantastic the weather has been, but this month it has, and how! Wall to wall sunshine and very little wind has been the norm over the past month. What a delight to be able to confirm the go ahead of charter trips a whole two days before the event without having to check the forecast to make sure that hurricane 'Ethel' is not creeping up on us again. The fishing has also been up to scratch. Clear tides and calm seas are just the job for tope fishing. Offshore grounds to the west have produced some great catches though spring tides will colour the water which in turn, will break up the shoals of these predators. Wreck sites have also produced some great fish with pollack to double figures, also one or two ling. Disappointingly, the early traces of mackerel came to next to nothing with the expected large shoals simply not materialising. This is not good as most of

the summer species will rely in some way in the mackerel migration. Though there is still time for them to show, its looking doubtful that there will be any great numbers. 'Alykat' took a two day trip to the far western approaches and though the weather was amazing the target species blue sharks were elusive though Allan Jaynes did manage a fish if around 130lb (released without measure) and Malcolm Bayldon joined in with a fish of 116lb ( by calculation). On the inshore scene, Dave Rugman took this years 'Alykat' species challenge trophy with our gallant SAN director James Wigglesworth missing out by just two points with over one hour to go! Dave also added a coalfish of 5 lb 4 oz which is a new Bristol Channel record by a long way! Lets hope this weather stays with us for a while longer to enjoy some more fantastic fishing days!

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler

Catches in general over the last month have been a bit on the lean side here in the channel. Last months prediction of continued productive catches sadly didn’t quite live up to expectations. Possibly the lovely warm weather we’ve been enjoying has had something to do with it. Who knows? The Smoothounds did their usual mid season vanishing trick from the shore line for a few weeks, plus the excellent small eyed fishing at Minehead slowed up a tad with just a consistent few fish showing rather than the good numbers we saw previously. As I write up this report in the last week of July the hounds are reappearing in isolated pockets over the Somerset reef marks and hopefully over the next few weeks we can expect to see a few decent bags caught with some half decent specimens amongst them. The bass fishing has been very good again. There’s big numbers of schoolies under a lb in weight. This is keeping the novice and junior anglers rod tips knocking. This is also great for the future stocks. There’s also modest amounts of 2-4lbers to be caught from a variety of marks throughout the channel from North Devon right up past the Severn bridges. I received a report from a couple of local anglers of two double figure bass caught locally by my regular customers from the shop. One caught by Clive Hodge on a reef

mark at just over 11lb and a 2nd caught by a local pub landlord at just over 10lb from Dunster beach. The lure fishing for bass around Porlock has been good again with several good fish being reported amongst plenty of schoolies of a couple of lbs. The Sole fishing has been ok with regular reports of them being caught from the upper reaches and also at Minehead. Thornback rays are a relatively reliable target species if you are struggling to find much else about. The area from Watchet to Weston rarely disappoints as long as you get the tide and conditions right. As we move into August sport can be very unpredictable throughout the channel and adapting tactics and species is often the wY to go .Big bass are definitely the one species to put any sort of effort into and a decent head and guts of a mackerel lobbed out short is just one productive way of hooking one. With the unpredictability of it all over the next month ,especially if this hot weather continues. It’s highly recommended you seek advice from the local Tackle shop in the area you intend to fish. You can almost be guaranteed to be pointed in the right direction of a fish or two , and if you spend a few more pennies in the shop may be 3 or 4 or more fish if your lucky. Anyway wishing you all a good month ahead if you venture down or up into the might Bristol Channel. Tightlines and happy hunting

The hounds slowed up over the last month. But the odd one or two have been showing up. After 15 years of trying to catch one even Aaron gay Brooklyn caught one recently at Minehead beach.

LAST LAUGH CHARTERS By John Skeggs

At last! the mackerel have turned up in reasonable numbers, an excellent bait and quality table fish. (Only take what you need). Local Bream fishing is still on a high with several fish coming aboard around the 3lb – 3.8 mark. Other species, Tope, Rays,

Smoothound and Bass are all plentiful both inshore and offshore. Mid Channel wrecking has been difficult at times especially on the smaller tide's, though there were positive signs on our last venture which saw plenty of Pollack, 9 Bass and a bonus two John Dory.

PRIVATE VENTURE By Art savage

Another good month weather wise, it reminds me of the summers we use to get twenty plus years ago. The Mackerel have now arrived in good numbers but can still be a little patchy at times (Hope they stay for a while) One fish that is dominant at the moment is the Tope, they are every where from inshore to mid channel and South of, the further you go out the bigger they get it

would seem. The Solent is producing some really good Smoothound (very good sport) however the weed can be challenging on certain tides, but a worth while trip. Inshore the fishing is steady with the usual marks producing plenty of Rays with the occasional Turbot and Brill. Off shore the wrecks are still very slow, but we have had some success over the rough ground.

WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, August 2018

Port Report What a wonderful summer we are enjoying after the grimmest and longest winter ever known to man. Long hot days with flat calm seas have turned the local skippers into bronzed Adoni of the sea much to the delight of Weymouth Tourist Board ever seeking new attractions. Unusually for our Port Report, one of our young skippers, Ryan Casey, deserves a special mention for putting a different angle on the ‘west bound’ trips to Dartmouth. For the past couple of years Ryan, along with some trusted advisors, has been seeking out and targeting blue shark. The searches have included lengthy trips to the west and south west of Guernsey as well as our own local sea area but it is the trips to the west of Dorset that held the most promise. Because of the immediacy of Facebook, many anglers have seen and ‘ liked’ Ryan’s success with his recent four day trip resulting in three anglers breaking the 100lb mark with blue shark of 165lb, 133lb and 125lb plus more in the 60lb to 90lb range. It must be stressed just how much hard work, research and lengthy preparation for these trips is required and it is very good that we have young skippers full of energy and enthusiasm to carry on this spirit of adventure. The mid-Channel wrecking out of Weymouth is described as ‘patchy’. The highlight has been with the very good pollack fishing with fish up into the high ‘teens. Cod have been sporadic again this year and I see on the social media anglers questioning ‘where have all the cod gone’? It’s easy to forget that for many years just one cod on the boat was regarded as a bonus and having six on the vessel was seen as an exceptional day. When such prolific ‘runs’ of cod as were enjoyed in 2015 followed by less but much bigger fish in 2016 are experienced then this somehow becomes the expected ‘norm’. it is not. Every year the fishing is different and having the cod arrive is a very welcome bonus as opposed to an automatic and expected pattern to the year. The pollack have always been predictable in their appearance but the cod have not. The cross channel Alderney trips in particular have resulted in some excellent pollack from the wrecks south of the 50 degree line with live mackerel, when they are available, sorting out the bigger fish. Anglers will have noticed how clear the water has been this year. Divers say it’s the best they’ve ever experienced with visibility at 55-60 metres consistently anything up to 15 metres which is extremely rare by all accounts. This has a marked effect on lure fishing. Shore anglers report watching their delicately worked Black Minnow lures being chased by wrasse and pollack plus various other species but with very few hook-ups. Great care and attention are required with tackle preparation to remove every bit of unnecessary ‘clutter’ such as booms, loads of big swivels, coloured beads and coloured or too heavy traceline. Skippers tell me how they try to encourage their anglers to really think about their rigs them and even demonstrate how this extra effort is worthwhile by bringing in fish to prove it…but it is often to no avail as fixed methods and habits are not easily changed. Skippers really do want their customers to catch fish but are often met with an unfathomably lack of desire to fish as advised. Every year a different species caused a surprise. This year, on the wrecks, it is the amount of john dory being caught that has provided ‘the unusual’. Lyle Stantiford of Supa Nova reports seeing 12 john dory landed on his boat in the past few weeks whereas it is more likely to see

just one a year come to the net. Away from the wrecking, this has again been a year of the ‘big fish’. There is a greater tendency to stay inshore and fish for sport with undulate rays, smoothounds, conger and very good tope fishing to be experienced. It goes without saying that these species are returned and anglers can maybe understand why angling is under such unending pressure from the various ‘conservation groups’ who constantly ask on the social media if these fish are returned. It seems a never ending battle to bring about an understanding of our sport but we must remember that Facebook, for example, is not an ‘Angling Forum’. It is open to everyone to see and comment upon and these uninformed comments show just how much damage is done by posting catches for all to see. There are vessels in Weymouth that really do concentrate on the inshore fishing and one skipper, Dave Pitman, has held true to form throughout a lifetime on the sea. If ‘Atlanta, Weymouth’ is searched on Facebook then the regular catches of plaice, bream,. Gurnards and rays along with turbot and brill will be seen. There is plenty of variety of species in the Weymouth and Portland area with the complex tides influencing the approach to the fishing tactics required and David’s years of commercial fishing before he took up full time chartering many moons ago gives him a detailed knowledge of the inshore fishery.

It’s good to see this current ‘swing’ back to inshore fishing with various other boats offering this and also offering half day and evening trips. As ever, our highly supportive Weymouth Angling Centre (Tel 01305 777771) is worth contacting to book such a trip as well as looking at the www.deepsea.co.uk or the www.charterboats-uk. co.uk websites in addition to the skipper’s own Facebook page. August has always been regarded as a quiet months on the wrecks for pelagic species. It is the time to get the anchor down and fish for conger and the Weymouth Conger Festival is fast approaching (again, contact Weymouth Angling Centre for the chance of any last minute spaces 01305 777771). Expect some big ling whilst at anchor and. For those who do not like fishing for these species, you can still fish for pollack from an anchored boat with the ‘drop back’ method that your skipper will show you if you don’t already know. The inshore bream fishing is superb and this will will be a main target species through August, September and October. The bream marks, usally fished at anchor, will also produce arrange of species with conger, tope, rays, gurnard and even, as is already occurring, a porbeagle shark. Porbeagles are particularly partial to bream so don’t be surprised when your gear suddenly tears off to sea, your rod buckles over and, as you try to stop the fish, there will be a loud snap as your line parts….unless you are prepared and can handle such a frenzied fight!

A nice mixed bag from a recent Alderney trip aboard Fish On II

Ray fishing on the various banks is excellent August and expect more brill to appear alongside the turbot and maybe there will be a few more plaice showing up. The Alderney trips are continuing with bream and flatfish the main quarry although the tope fishing around the Islands has been excellent this year when the mackerel are available for the all important bait supply. The forecasts still look good with settled weather ahead so the days at sea will be very pleasant. Thank you to all of you for coming to Weymouth and Portland and supporting the local charter fleet and may your fishing being successful.

THREE NEW RECORD FISH CLAIMS PROVISIONALLY ACCEPTED BY BRITISH RECORD FISH COMMITTEE The BRFC was scheduled to meet on 27th June but because there was, at the time, only one record claim awaiting ratification it was agreed that in the interests of the BRFC members’ time and costs, there being no other issues requiring immediate attention, the June meeting should be cancelled. The one outstanding claim, by Cameron Atkinson, for his 18lb shore-caught spurdog, having been positively adjudicated by the BRFC sea-fish specialist group, has been provisionally awarded pending final ratification when the committee next meets.

The Committee would like to remind anglers that in the event of the capture of a potential record fish, the captor should first contact the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee without delay. Captors of potential record fish should contact the Secretary, Nick Simmonds, at the Angling Trust, on 01568 620447 or by email at brfc@ anglingtrust.net Nick will record the details of the capture and advise the claimant on progressing the claim.

Cameron’s fish weighed 18lb, overtaking Gary Hillon’s 2017 shore-caught record of 17lb 8oz 8dr.

The three new records provisionally accepted following scrutiny by the respective specialist members of the BRFC are:

Since the decision (at the end of May) to cancel the June meeting, three further record claims have been made, of which two have been completed and provisionally awarded – again pending final ratification. One further claim has been made by Ryan Wingfield, in respect of his shore-caught tope claimed at 73lb 2oz, from a West Wales beach on 24th May. Claim forms have been issued to Ryan and his claim will be presented for adjudication upon receipt of the completed paperwork.

Lawrence King – Golden Orfe (Leuciscus idus (L) – Caught at Newdigate Farms Fishery, Surrey, on 20th May 2018. Jason Touzel – White Sea Bream (Diplodus sargus) – Shore-caught – West coast of Jersey, on 11th May 2018. Cameron Atkinson – Spurdog (Squalus acanthias) – Shore-caught – Watermouth, North Devon, on 24th January 2018.

Lawrence’s capture, at 8lb 5oz, equals the current record set in 2000 by Michael Wilkinson from Lymm Vale, Cheshire.

Jason’s fish weighed 3lb 3oz 2dr and was witnessed by Roger Bryant, who held the previous record of 2lb 12oz 8dr.

SUCCESS FOR TEAM ENGLAND IN THE SALC SHORE HOME INTERNATIONAL England Seniors Team

England Junior Team

The stunning lochs of Argyll in Scotland hosted the 2018 SALC Shore Angling Home International over the weekend of the 6th and 7th July 2018 as Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales once again competed for medals across Seniors, Ladies, Youth and Junior categories. The competition proved to be a successful one for Team England, taking silver medals in all three categories they entered, Seniors, Youth and Juniors. Host nation Scotland took gold in the Seniors, Ladies and Youth categories while Ireland took the honours in the Junior category. The Senior competition was held on the shore of Loch Leven and Richard Yates led team England; Ian Bowell, Kenny McCoy, George Smith, Neil Cutler and Andrew Dugdale, with Ben Arnold as reserve. The team arrived in Scotland a few days early for some practice and found the venues to be fishing well, with plenty of dogfish and rays plus some codling, haddock and ling at range in the deeper water. There were also some smaller species such as poor cod and small wrasse closer in against the rough loch edge. Once the points system was announced it was clear that the smaller species would be the target on the first match day as there had been good numbers on that venue, however the second day would be more about casting for dogfish.

third with Ireland on 10.” The second day went as expected with dogfish at range being the main fish. However, the difficult fishing continued on the same beaches and had a drastic effect on the number of fish in some areas with one zone producing a single fish. England won the day with 14 points, Ireland and Wales tied for second on 10 points and Scotland were fourth with 9 points. This meant Scotland held on to the lead, but England moved into second place, with Wales third and Ireland fourth. The Youth and Junior competition was held on picturesque Loch Fyne and the teams were greeted with glorious weather as clear skies and high temperatures dominated the first two practice days, but the fishing produced some excellent catches for Team England. The championship venue was a mixture of rocky shore line or rough ground fishing into kelp areas and fish caught were dogfish, dab, codling, whiting, pollock, gurnard and dragonet - plenty for the anglers to enjoy.

Richard Yates, England Manager said: “We started the first match targeting the close in fish. Tackle losses were very high in some zones with some pegs being tougher than others, one of our anglers lost 40 weights on rotten bottoms, while another lost 17 rigs, finding it hard to get anything back even with tackle designed for the rough terrain.”

England’s Junior team was led by the experienced David Graham and ably assisted by Colin Olver and the team consisted of Owen Dunn, Riley Price, Owen Strange, Oliver Saint, Ben Cloke and James Slater (reserve). Day One of the Junior category fished to a 15cm minimum size limit with all fish measured by stewards and released at point of capture. Fishing was patchy at the start with the odd dab and gurnard being caught. An hour and a half into the match the fishing started to improve in a 20-minute spell just before low water and another flurry of fish just as the tide started flooding boosted anglers score cards. At the end of day one England were in gold medal position with 18 points, Ireland recorded 13 points while Scotland and Wales each had 8 points.

Scotland won the first day on 17 points, Wales were second on 13 and we tied for

towards deeper water in Loch Fyne, with the prospect of even better fishing than the first day, with the mood being of nervous excitement in the England camp. Unlike the first day and every practice day, the best fishing proved to be in the first 40 minutes of the match, with no flurry of fish around low water and the early flood, just the odd fish caught at the halfway stage and virtually no fish in the last hour. England struggled to capitalise in this early spell and didn’t have the opportunity to make a comeback during the remainder of the match and finished with 24 points, enough to secure the Juniors second place and a silver medal.

count back and Scotland edged England by just one fish.

David Graham, England Junior Shore Manager said “A big thank you to Mike Horn and all the rest of the Scottish Federation for running the superb Championships and for being great hosts and making the team feel very welcome. Also, a big thank you to David Neil for organising and supplying our superb practice baits and to all the companies that give continued support to the England Junior team, Kamasan, The Southern League and Opens, Vass Waders and Rainwear, Christchurch Angling Centre, Tronixpro and Mugged Write Off. Last but not least a massive thank you to all the parents who chauffeured the team and all the tackle and kept us fed and watered during the Championships.”

Youth Results:

England’s Youth team was led by the experienced duo of Mark Hurcombe and Malcolm Stote and the team consisted of Ben Eggleton, Adam Howard, Dillon Thompson, Warren Cutting and Rory Eastlake. On Day One the team worked very hard to finish in a credible second place just one point behind Scotland and two points in front of Ireland. Day Two was a very hard-fought competition and it was so close between England and Scotland that they tied for first place. The gold medal was awarded on number of fish on

In the ladies category this year there were only two nations able to field teams which saw Scotland win the gold medal and Ireland finish in runner up position with silver.

Mark Hurcombe, Team England Youth Manager stated “This was a great new team to work with and a team that will go all the way both in the Home Nations and the World Championships. They all worked very hard during the Championship and I’m very proud of everyone’s achievement of getting team silver.” Senior Results: 1st Scotland 26 points (Gold) 2nd England 24 points (Silver) 3rd Wales 23 points (Bronze) 4th Ireland 20 points (Dark Bronze)

1st Scotland 28 points (Gold) 2nd England 28 points (Silver) 3rd Ireland 26 points (Bronze) Junior Results: 1st Ireland 31 points (Gold) 2nd England 24 points (Silver) 3rd Scotland 20 points (Bronze) 4th Wales 19 points (Dark Bronze) Ladies results: 1st Scotland 20 points (Gold) 2nd Ireland 18 points (Silver)

Team England would like to thank the Scottish Federation for organising a successful championship and special mention should be made of the bait, which was plentiful and of excellent quality and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2019.

Sun 8.7.18, 6th round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2018, Connah’s Quay, Flintshire (23 rods)

Recreational Boat trip 9 July. On Monday 9th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational boat trip aboard “Voyager” OUT OF Lymington. This was a fishing trip for novices with some seasonal anglers to help during the day. 10 club members signed on and with no wind we ventured out to a 10 mile mark that Kevin knew where fish were more likely to be caught. Fish caught included tope, smoothhounds, small eyed and blonde rays.

Fish came on the feed from the start, even before the tide flooded up the narrow Dee channel on a hot, breezy evening. Although Connah’s Quay is known as a flounder venue, relatively few of these were caught with school bass making up the bulk of the catches, to both worm and crab baits. Bill Lindfield made up for a slow start, notching up a score of 19 bass and and a flounder for 713 points to easily win the upriver Zone B. In Zone A, Paul Bonner, found a few eels among the shoals of bass for 506 points and runner-up place. With former front runner Daniel Parker away on boat fishing duties for this match, reigning champion, John Waugh took the championship lead. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 19 bass, 1 flounder, 713 pts. (Zone B) 2. Paul Bonner (West Kirby), 12 bass, 3 eels, 1 flounder, 506 (Zone A) 3. Stuart Dewhurst (Preston), 19 bass, 2 flounders, 600. 4. John Waugh (Wallasey), 12 bass, 406. 5. David G. Hutchinson (Lancaster), 15 bass, 2 eels, 1 flounder, 580. 6. Kevin Coleman (Dwygyfylchi), 11 bass, 359. Roundfish Pool: B. Lindfield, bass, 590 gms. Flatfish Pool: Richard Burrow (Felixstowe), flounder, 600 gms. Series after six rounds: 1. J. Waugh, 118. 2. R. Burrow, 114. 3. Steve Bonner (Wallasey), 100. 4. Daniel Parker (junior, Wallasey), 99 5. Les Trish (Crosby), 89. 6. equal, Paul Warrington jr. (Wallasey) & Steve Trish (Bootle), both 89.

LDSFC Report on Social Evening and Barbecue and the 25th Anniversary of the Completion of the Clubhouse Around fifty members attended Lymington and District Sea Fishing Club’s annual social evening on July 7th, which this year celebrated the 25th anniversary of the clubhouse being built. For once the weather behaved itself and members were able to enjoy a very warm evening. To mark the occasion the club’s past treasurer Ray Davies was invited to unveil a photograph of the president, vice-president, chairman and Ray, taken just after the clubhouse was completed. At the chairman’s request Ray gave a short speech explaining how, as a new member of the club back in the 1960s, he took up a challenge from the secretary Ron Hann to get the club its own premises. A building society account was eventually set up for this purpose with just a few pounds initially. Over the years the account grew through various fundraising schemes. On several occasions expectations were raised only to be dashed and the prospect of the idea coming to fruition seemed as far away as ever. However in the early 1990s the dream was finally realised through the generosity of Mrs Naussica Pinckney. As treasurer at the time Ray explained how the club then raised the necessary funds to complete the project which cost over £70,000. In paying tribute to Mrs Pinckney, Ray included all members, past and present, who had contributed towards the project along the way. He also unveiled a specially commissioned stainless steel weather vane made by club member, Steve Batchelor, featuring a bass, to celebrate the 25 years. President Derek Smith then surprised the club’s secretary Georgina Moody by presenting her with a garden bench on behalf of the club for over thirty-five years’ service as the club ’s secretary. A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the occasion a success; in particular, Brian Ansell and Tim Clark and their helpers for doing the barbecue, and Sue Moody and everyone else who helped behind the bar, including doing the washing up.

LDSFC Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club. Keith Panks wins all by his self. On Saturday 30th June Lymington & District sea Fishing Club held it’s 6th shore competition which was a rover. 3 club members signed on and fished in dry and very hot conditions. Only 1 fish was caught and that was a dogfish weighing 1lb 6oz caught by Keith Panks who won the competition as the 2 others both blanked. The best flat fish pool of £30 is a rollover. Also the best specimen pool of £72 is a rollover until the next competition held on Saturday 14th July.

LDSFC Denise has a very good win. On Saturday 14th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a shore roving competition. Due to a poor attendance it was decided it would be easier to hold the competition at Southbourne with hopefully

the chance of some nice fish. Sadly this was not the case for the 8 club members who attended the competition. The weather on the evening was very hot with not even a sea breeze to cool things down. 4 club members weighed in fish consisting of pouting, mackerel and sole. 6 fish were caught in total for a weight of 2lb 3.7oz. Best round fish was a mackerel of 9.3oz caught by Jamie Munden. Best flat fish was a sole of 6.1oz caught by Keith Panks. Results: 1st Denise Donaldson (Lady) with 2 fish for 10.1oz. 2nd Jamie Munden with 1 fish for 9.6oz. 3rd Keith Panks with 2 fish for 9.5oz. 4th Malcolm Stote with 1 fish for 7.4oz.

LDSFC Results of Large boat Competition on the 15th July 2018. Eight members enjoyed the current hot spell aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage, for their monthly large boat competition. Avoiding the large spring tide, the first stop was off Christchurch Ledge drifting for pollack, which duly obliged. Anchoring up saw a steady flow of dogfish, black bream and small scad for the anglers before the tide eased enough to venture further out. This new mark fished better with plenty of small bream and spotted rays, mackerel, dogfish and a single smooth hound. The freshening breeze in the afternoon provided some respite from the searing heat.

LDSFC Brian has a fantastic win at Last On Sunday 22nd July Lymington & District Sea fishing Club held a Shallow Boat competition. The weather on the day started off very fine with a light breeze, but sadly once the tide turned it became very windy and the sea state became choppy which made it rather uncomfortable sitting in a boat fishing. Fish caught consisted of stingrays, black bream, thornback ray, smoothhound, dogfish and ballan wrasse. The best specimen and heaviest fish (which are brought back to the scales for weighing) was a black bream weighing 1lb 14oz (53.57% of specimen fish) caught by Alan Martin. Results: 1st Brian Ansell 2 fish for 21lbs 12oz, 2nd Barry Littlefair 7 fish for 20lbs 5.6oz, 3rd Derek Smith 2 fish for 14lbs 10oz, 4th Alan Martin 6 fish for 12lbs 0.8oz, 5th Adrian Moody 8 fish for 8lb 0.8oz, 6th Phil Morgan 3 fish for 4lb 6oz, 7th Denis Mapes 3 fish for 3lb 0.2oz, 8th Robert Miness 2 fish for 2lb 3.4oz. On these competitions only edible fish are retained. All others are measured and released straight away.
