The England Men’s Angling Team travelled to Llandudno, Wales to take part in the FIPS-M 35th Men’s World Shore Angling Championship from 20th – 27th October. This extremely competitive World Championship ended with a hard-fought silver medal for the England Men’s team. England finished sixteenth out of the eighteen participating countries on day 1, but despite catching plenty of whiting, were the only team not to catch any high value dogfish and finished with 16-day points which was a disappointing start. Despite this seemingly impossible position, the team, consisting of World number 1 Saul Page, Darren Newland and Richard Yates, also both in the top 4 World Rankings, Gareth Griffiths and new cap Ian Dancey, battled back impressively to win the last three days. This was an unbelievable performance under the circumstances and the England warriors finished on 19 points and only one point away from the gold medal. The team was also eagerly backed up by reserve Julian Shambrook, Bill Lindfield (assistant manager), Ian Golds (manager) and Malcolm Stote who, despite not being part of the official team, selflessly gave up his valuable time and travelled almost 300 miles each way to help out.

This was a wonderful team effort by all. Top 4 team results; 1st Portugal – Gold 2nd England – Silver 3rd Spain – Bronze 4th Wales Top 4 individual results; 1st Ruud Van Noord (Netherlands) 2nd Richard Gormley (Ireland) 3rd Antonio Milheirao (Portugal) 4th Benito Vantorre (Belgium)

Ian Golds, proud team manager stated “Individually, Saul Page finished 7th, Darren Newland 10th, Richard Yates 20th, Gareth Griffiths 21st and Ian Dancey 41st out of the 90 top class anglers at the event. England also caught the most fish, 395 and accumulated the most fish points 9282, so really did put on a world class display. The performance by each angler was considered by many of the other teams to have been outstanding, especially after the disappointing first match. They never let their heads drop and showed true British bulldog spirit and it was an honour to have managed this team of battlers. Thank you one and all. A huge congratulations to the new World Champions

Portugal and bronze medal winners Spain, wonderful achievements on foreign beaches.” “I would like to thank team supporters Anyfish Anywhere, ASSO, Bassboots and Tronix pro, the WSFA, the wonderfully helpful local council and the many volunteers /stewards who made this Championship such an amazing event. From the stunning opening ceremony and banquet, great location and excellent fishing to the brilliant awards ceremony, this really was spectacular and one to be highly thought of by every nation for many years to come.” The Angling Trust would like to offer their sincere congratulations to England Men’s Shore Team on such a fantastic achievement. On behalf of the Angling Trust, Team England and all the many anglers who have followed the team’s progress over the years, everyone would like to thank Ian Golds, England Manager for all his dedication and commitment and for bringing his wealth of expertise to this role. Ian is sadly retiring from his role as Team England Manager and will be missed from the International circuit. Ian has been a true ambassador for Team England and sea angling for many years and everyone would like to wish him all the very best.

THAMES ESTUARY

THAMES ESTUAURY

BRIGHTLINGSEA, Essex

Thames Estuary

by Lee Bolingbroke

f I was to say the last week has been easy I would be talking fibs and with the weather changing to winter in just a few days its been nasty with strong easterly winds and sleet showers yuck its going to take some getting used to after the balmy early Autumn. On the bright side perhaps it will bring in a few codling which at the moment are few and far between. Plenty of rays whiting and doggies on most trips though, but the small tides are a struggle and I would give them a miss unless you want dabs. And why would you not want dabs, anglers pay fortunes driving to south and west coast ports to catch a few plaice, dabs are just as delicious to eat and we are catching up to thirty of more fish a trip ok they don’t

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 3

have red spots but who cares and we are catching them in the calm of the estuary and we don’t have to steam for miles in the hope of catching dabs with red spots. It certainly is getting lonely out in the thames estuary now with several boats and skippers retiring and very little new blood coming into the business so getting out on charter boats in our area needs a bit of planning ahead for anglers if you want to get out on a charter boat on a particular date plan ahead as you may not be able to jump on a charter at a minuets notice. We should see a few more codling moving in as we approach mid November rays dabs and whiting will be in abundance and the sheltered waters of the thames estuary will avoid cancelations.

BRIXHAM REPORT By Kevin Wyatt

Padstow, Cornish angler Lawrence Dawber of Tintagel SAC fished his local Camel Estuary hoping to catch some Flounder when his size 1/0 baited with a single lugworm tipped with white ragworm was picked up by this superb 10lb 2oz Bass just as the tide started to flood. Said Lawrence when I spoke to him later that evening, ‘I’m absolutely buzzing’

Obsession Brixham the home of biguns and whoppers. Don't forget guys we are taking bookings for 2019,,, so give me a call kev 07964 053347 or Lee 07762911235 don't forget Brixham is a very diverse fishery every thing from placie to shark all from on port.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

SIZE MATTERS

By Scott Smy

Despite the weather having been pretty crappy over the past few weeks, it seems to have improved the fishing no end and some cracking fish have been weighed in by club anglers in the Plymouth area. We don’t get a lot of spurdogs from the South Devon coast but the recent stormy weather resulted in a number being caught which happened to coincide with the latest round of the Plymouth Shore League. Anglers fishing both rock and beach marks within the Start Bay area found some cracking spurs with the best being a nice fish of 12lb by Rob Batten of Castaways SAC caught whilst fishing for huss near Start Point. I myself landed a nice fish of 10-7 for Alan Hobbs of Roving Rods whilst also huss fishing close to the mouth of the River Dart and I heard of quite a few showing from Beesands and Slapton. Unlike smoothies, spurs have a very impressive set of nashers so it’s best to use wire for your traces as they will often bite through 80-100lb mono like cotton. Any fish bait will work well for spurs. Despite huss and spurs showing the best fish of the weekend for the Plymouth Shore League was a cracking SE ray of 13-1 caught by Dave Horrill of Plymouth SAC which came from a beach mark within the Start Bay area. Nice one Dave, that is a cracking fish. At long last it seems as though the Tamar

Ben Jones Flounder 2-4

is coming back to like with Martin Larkin of South West Sea Baits landing a nice cod of 7lb from Devils Point on peeler crab. I am also hearing reports of good numbers of eels being caught (although there isn’t much size to them at the moment) along with pouting to 2-6 and bass to just over 8lb. Fresh peeler crab or live prawns are the prime baits for cod/pouting/rays although a large bait-up of black lug and squid also works well for the cod whilst most eels will take either cuttlefish or large english squid. Floundering is one of my favourite forms of fishing over the winter months and there are signs that things are starting to improve as the temperatures drop. A good friend of mine has been finding some good-sized flounders in the River Plym up to just over 2lb whilst the recent Plymouth Federation Comp held on the Kingsbridge Estuary produced a good number of fish up to a maximum weight of 2-11. I happened to fish this comp myself and had a cracking day (despite the gale force easterly winds) landing 7 flounder up to 2-7 which was big enough to get me joint 3rd place in the comp. The flounder fishing should only get better over the next few weeks although seeing how plump the fish are already I can’t see the season lasting that long this year. That’s it from me for this month – happy dipping.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers

The general fishing along the beach has been fairly steady but with the strong south westerly winds that we’ve experienced over the past couple of weeks its proved hard work just putting the sessions in. Thankfully the wind has recently changed direction to a north easterly which gives anglers an advantage of it being sheltered from the winds and also aiding casting distances. But don’t be fooled as just after a south westerly gale, even if the wind swings right around, the swell can be horrendous producing rogue waves catching people by surprise which can be very dangerous. Weymouth angling centre held their annual cod open along Chesil towards the beginning of the month with 156 anglers taking part sadly the fishing proved hard work for most with only 10 cod being caught. Till Hall managed 3 codling putting him 1st overall with heaviest bag taking home an impressive £1000 with Ben Arnold taking

£500 for heaviest cod. The ray fishing along the beach has produced some lovely fish recently with Ben Stockley, Andrew Proudfoot and Till Hall all landing blonde ray to over double figures. Ben managed 5 blondes with the biggest going 22lb 5oz setting a new pb, Till Hall landed a 14lb blonde and also a new pb weighing 19lb and Andrew landing several ray into double figures. Ollie male manged some great condition plaice and sole on a night session. He managed his target on the first cast being a lovely sole and ended the night with 2 sole, 4 plaice and sone dabs.

More blonde ray this time falling to Andrew Proudfoot

As always Chesil has its surprises and with an angler fish caught on a lure a few months back I was quite shocked to hear an 8lb angler had been landed on the beach! The fish fell to a rag and squid bait on a pulley rig. Once again well done Simon Lancastle. Until next time keep safe and tight lines…. Nicholas Barsby with a codling and plaice

Simon Lancaste with an 8lb angler fish and a lovely lower double cod

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins

The start of the month was a complete washout with the remnants of the Atlantic storms hitting our shores and unseasonable temperatures drawing winds from the south, this has all but put a stop to boat angling. Those few days when the weather has allowed a few hours fishing there has been reasonable catches of Plaice, Whiting and plenty of small Congers to keep the anglers on their toes. A few Cod have been boated the best I have heard of is 13lb, as we head into winter we hopefully will see a few more Cod and better in size. As the light starts to fade many anglers are enjoying a session on the Squid which is good fun but can be very messy, nowadays many tackle shops stock Squid jigs some with flashing lights, one angler was so proud of the expensive flashing lure he had and switched it on long before using it the battery life was 4 hrs, after 30 minutes travelling the moment

he put it in the water it packed up much to his annoyance but funny to his mates. The harbour has produced a few Flounders and plenty of small checkers. As we head towards Christmas I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Very Merry Christmas and plenty of good fishing. Poole Sea Angling Centre are holding a Flounder competition at Baiter Park on Saturday 8th December for more details please contact Andy Robbins on 01202676597 or 07909901033 Our local IFCA officer Sarah is organising a Open boat Flounder comp in aid of the RNLI on Sunday 20th Jan 2019 for further details email rnli.poolebranch@gmail.com or call Chris 07856532872 Poole Species Comp 2019 The date for next year is Friday June 7th 2019 for more info contact Sarah Medley ‘pinkdolphin75@hotmail.co.uk’

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

Although the weather has limited the amount of trips we have done over the last month we have managed a good variety when given the opportunity. All the excitement from last month’s shark trips encouraged us to have another go which proved very fruitful. Tony Lees boated is first porbeagle shark weighing around 200lb, the fish fought for an hour and a half and as usual was returned unharmed to terrorize the bream for another day. We figured we had had our luck for the day until 1415 when we started to catch a few small mackerel on feathers by the surface. Within five minutes of putting one of these tiny things on for bait we had our second run. After getting all our other gear out of the water it became clear just what we had hooked into as an enormous thresher jumped clean out of the water 100m behind the boat. After a couple more jumps, one of which we caught on camera and you can see on our Facebook page, and 3 more hours we managed to get the boat

alongside the fish as it swam along at 6 knots and touch the trace to confirm the catch. It’s tough to estimate the size of a creature like that as it’s the biggest thing I have ever seen on rod and line by a long way. The anglers and I all agreed it must have been between 500 and 600lb. What a monster. Also on our last shark trip Karston Murray landed not one but two Atlantic bonito at the same time on feathers whilst fishing for bait. A first for us on Silver Spray. Elsewhere the bream fishing on the offshore wrecks seems to be getting better and better with just a short session over slack producing a good 50+ fish to 4lb. Inshore the winter fishing has begun with the first cod and whiting hitting the deck along with some early season spurdogs as well. Although the weather hasn’t been great for them we have managed a couple of goes for the squid with some success as well. Over the next couple of weeks we shall just be inshore focusing on the cod and also some drifting for bass.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, December 2018

NORTH DEVON REPORT

By Wayne Thomas

As autumn drifts into winter shore fishing prospects are excellent for sport with some of the years best specimens often landed. Predators are top of the wanted list on the open coast where David Brooke won Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Autumn rover landing a fine tope of 34lb 1oz tempted on fresh rockling hook bait. Several bull huss into double figures have been tempted with the first spurdog of the winter caught from regular haunts. Bass have continued to provide sport on both baits and lures on the open coast and in the estuary. If the water temperature holds up these silver bars can be caught all year. Grey mullet can also be caught from some marks all year with the winter months often bringing the opportunity to land the biggest specimens of the year. The estuary has been fishing well for flounder with several fish caught close to 2lb. Ragworm have also been plentiful

and this could well be one reason for the flounder fishing being the best its been for several seasons. The lower estuary has seen a few codling landed and large numbers of dogfish an unusual catch inside the estuary bar. There is always the chance of a big cod on the open coast though recent seasons have seen very poor rewards. Weather will undoubtedly play a significant part in the winter fishing prospects. If we get a few winter gales with winds from the South or South West then sport can be excellent. If we get consistent easterly winds then it could be a struggle.

Dan Miles Redmore with a specimen bull huss of 10lb 10oz

LANGSTONE

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club What happens when you plan to take your boat out at the weekend? It gets windy. What happens when you plan a boat fishing competition? It is even more likely to get windy. Fortunately the winds abated enough for the annual inter-club competition between Southsea Marina, Eastney, Southsea angling clubs and Langstone Harbour Fishermen’s Association to take place. 47 anglers took part with the top prize going to the largest specimen fish. Last year cup-holders SMAC lost to ECA and this year we were delighted to win it back. Our commodore Tim Andrews weighed in (and released) a cuckoo wrasse of 1lb 10oz which was the best specimen of the day. The photo here shows Pete Kilshaw of hosts ECA presenting the prize to Tim. We’ll be fighting it out again next year. SMAC Fish of the Month was won by Kev Johnson with a slightly larger cuckoo wrasse, 1lb 12oz although this wasn’t in the competition. They must know where those big wrasse hang out. As usual, those with flexible (or no) work arrangements have been able to fish midweek and have had some good catches – ray, bass, pollack, huss as shown in the photo gallery. For the rest of us, the weather on the last few weekends has been consistently bad and the Open Cod Competition rolls forward yet another week. Hopefully we will have a report on this next month. It is probably just as well, because the hot summer and mild autumn has meant sea temperatures have not fallen as quickly as usual. Mackerel and garfish are still lingering, and cod and whiting have not shown in any numbers just yet. Maybe another week or two will make a difference. Meanwhile, if you can’t get out far you can still catch some cracking fish close in – very close

in for mullet. Heber Crawford shows this 4lb 10oz beauty. Another inshore fish making an appearance on the score board is the flounder – a 2lb specimen for Steve Kelly. We used to catch flounders by the dozen but in recent years they have almost become a rarity. Various theories for their demise have been circulating: it could be caused by the increasing numbers of predatory bass in the nursery zones, pollution (Langstone Harbour oyster fishery is closed due to this), seals, French trawlers, illegal netting for pot bait and of course the EU. Squid fishing has been booming, so much so that angling shops have had to hurriedly restock their squid lures. Good sized squid can be caught by boat (Bill Arnold and John Evans demonstrate here), from the beach, pier and harbour walls. Team Crawford are regularly bringing in good catches. By the way, if you like deep fried calamari or salt and pepper squid you really need to try fresh-caught local squid. Can’t be beaten! Shoals of anchovy have been appearing recently. These can be caught with tiny feather rigs and make good baits, or you can prepare and eat them much like sprats. Apparently in some seasons the cod and bass are stuffed with them so it is always worth trying with tiny feathers if you see a shoal on the fish-finder. Chances are, larger fish will be waiting under them too.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

The last month has been a bit quiet out from Burnham. The wind and tides at weekends haven't helped much but that is something a small boat owner has to work around. We are still waiting for the first cod from club waters but they can't be far away now. There are huge numbers of strap conger out there this year and they will hang around until the water temperature drops. The whiting are starting to show, hopefully they will be as plentiful as last winter. On Sunday 21st October 3 boats with 10 members fished the Ray Farthing trophy. The match started with flat seas but with a forecast indicating that once the tide turned around lunchtime then the wind would move northerly and increase as the afternoon went on. With this in mind we all steamed down to Watchet looking for an early cod but we drew a blank on that one. The fishing was steady but finding a fish in size was proving difficult. As the wind increased Four Buoys moved closer to home trying another couple of marks while Seanies Flyer and Ultra White stuck it out at Watchet. Back on the beach there were only 4 fish to weigh in with Martin Quinn coming out on top with a spotted ray of 4lb 4oz and 87%. Second was Aaron Devey with an lsd of 1lb 13oz and 60%. A whiting of 12oz and 35% was enough for third for James Devey.

November 4th Nigel Devey and Andy Georgiou took Ultra White up to Portishead and both managed to catch their first codling of the season in amongst dogs, straps and thornbacks. Friday 16th myself, Stephen and Fred Saxby joined a couple of regulars on Mikey Webbers Teddie Boy out of Minehead for a short one over high. The weather was a bit miserable but it didn't put the fish off with a total of 7 species caught in just 4 hours. Best fish fell to Stephen, a blonde of 14-12 but again the cod eluded us.

Fish of the month for October sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Martin Quinn with a spotted ray of 4-4 and 87%. The next competition is our xmas comp on 9th December with 2 more reserve competitions before the year ends. The next club meeting is our xmas social on Thursday 20th December at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Again a very successful month for the charter boats of Minehead. Several cod now making an appearance with some good sized fish amongst them. Inshore grounds are always favourite for these fish though bigger specimens can be found almost anywhere. Whiting also starting to show but as yet numbers and sizes are small. With the appearance of the herring and sprat shoals, conger are now at their best, feeding up as if there was no tomorrow on hit the visiting food fish. As the frost get harder the eels will slowly cut down on their feeding and go into their semi hibernation period. One or two bass

also on offer though as usual, they will make you work hard, often for nothing. A late season surprise for Alykat anglers was the appearance of a few large pollack from a small wreck, this is very late for these fish so made a pleasant surprise with Steve Chillcott taking the best at 14lb. Phil Jane added to the surprise list with a 4lb 8oz lobster from the same wreck! Offshore grounds now bustling with spurdogs with fish well into double figures featuring in many catches. Hopefully these fish will stay around for the next couple of months providing cracking sport when the cod decide to play hard to get!

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler

The past month has seen some truly fantastic catches with plenty of quality fish recorded from the shores of the Bristol Channel. I’ll apologise now for not being able mention all the fish and the anglers who have caught these fish that I’m aware of. This year has chucked up loads of surprises from shockingly bad periods when it seems every fish has vanished to periods when its seem its stacked with quality fish here there and everywhere. I guess that’s the magic and mystery of the inspiring Bristol Channel. At this time of the year I’m all psyched up to

report on our infamous codling fishing. But this month the positive codling fishing has been over shadowed and literally blown out of the water by the superb Ray, Huss, Spurdog and Bass fishing that had been nothing short of awesome. I’m going to keep the report short this month to include as many photos of the catches as possible. As this is the last issue before Christmas. I would like to wish you all a happy and fishy Christmas and say a big thank you to all that have shared their catch photos, for me to use in my report. Tightlines and happy hunting cheers all

Huss Fishing The Huss fishing is improving every year with quality and quantity. Recently in the Bossington, Porlock and Minehead area we’ve seen many 8-12lb Huss caught in good numbers with catches of 2-10 Huss a session. George Stavrakopoulos has had serval well into double figures recently.

Historic Harbour-side Venue ●Newly refurbished iconic pub and hotel with its fantastic Minehead harbour-side setting. ●Fine ales & river cottage style food & traditional hospitality at its best. ●Fishing parties welcome.

Spurdog Fishing Spurdog fever has hit the Somerset coast west of Minehead. This is something that’s increasing every year with big numbers swarming in the channel. In recent years they are becoming more and more common as they venture closer to the shore and in shallower water than expected. This is a great thing for the winter shore angler as it fills a gap and adds a great alternative species to the sporadic codling fishery. Take care when fishing for them, beware of the spines under the fins as they will put a hole in your hand or arm if not careful. It’s always wise to use a short 10-15cm bit of biting wire on the snood ad they will bite off 150/200lb mono with ease especially when feeding hard. Also respect them with good safe fish handling and don’t forget the weigh sling.

Ray Fishing The Ray fishing at Minehead recently has been amazing with good numbers of quality Blonde and smalleyed rays a plenty. This winter is reasonable to think we could possibly expect to see a blonde rays pushing 25lb being caught and the Bristol Channel Small eyed record is seriously in the edge of being beaten around the Minehead area.

LAST LAUGH CHARTERS By John Skeggs

We have just had the longest unsettled period of weather for quite along time, this has put pay to most of last month bookings. The trips we have managed to get in, have seen plenty of Whiting and Bass but no sign of the Cod, will they ever return in good numbers? Other winter species Conger, Rays and Spurdog are quite plentiful, not to mention

the occasional double figure Turbot. Who knows, the latest strong winds might have pushed a few Cod in, and if they haven't there should be plenty of quality Whiting to be caught. For those who can get away from the family this Christmas, I will be operating charters over the holiday period. (07796023881).

Sea Angling News, December 2018

all round balance of talent.

Port Report November started off with the two day Weymouth Pairs competition which attracted its biggest entry to date with 27 teams taking part. The concept behind this event is that each pair fished from the same boat and between them try to get two of as many species as they can. Catching one pout, for example, gives the team 1 point but the second fish of that species is allocated 2 points. Thus a two fish ‘full house’ gives a maximum 3 points between the pair for that species. It’s a simple but excellent competitive framework within which the anglers must work with the points from both of the two days fishing added together for a final total. Many different species were caught with Team Lonis (Paul Hollyoake and Ed Taylor) amassing an amazing 23 different species although because they did not catch two of each species with that second fish being the all-important one for the pints, they actually finished in 7th position. Winner of this years Weymouth Pairs was ‘Team Idiots’ made up of a clearly returned to top form Ray Barron and his popular team mate, Michael Webber who is owner and skipper of Teddie Boy Charters out of Minehead. They totalled 20 different species but managed an amazing score of 97 points well ahead of second placed team ‘Northern Sole’ made up of Jon Law and Kevin Preston on 89 points. Close behind in third position on 88 points was ‘The Odd Couple’ with Robin Amor and Paul Milkins who finished one point above England Internationals Colin Searles and Steve Batchelor who made up team ‘Christchurch Angling’. When writing up results it is easy to miss the achievement behind the angling. A great deal of preparation needed to go into this event with the various species requiring pre-prepared rigs with back up if they should be lost amongst the rocky terrain where many of the fish came from. Lightning fast rig changes are required; everything must be in order in the tackle box and clearly marked…there’s no time for tying rigs at sea or grizzling when a set-up is lost or needs to be changed. Competition is intense and is certainly not for everyone. For many anglers, going to sea is a chance to have a break from work and a pleasant time in the company of friends and fellow anglers. A much more relaxed approach to the day’s fishing is more the norm but the competitions certainly show just how impressive the variety of species there are to be caught. It has been a marvellous season for bream enthusiasts with plenty of fish to 3lb 8oz from the various reefs around Portland and in Weymouth Bay with the wrecks holding bigger bream up to 5lb. Bream tend to come from rocky ground which hold mussels amongst the fish attracting food supply. Rocky ground marks will produce conger,

It’s been a wonderful year with fantastic weather. At times. earlier in the year, the fishing was not easy but the past three months have been excellent and December will continue this trend especially fo rth ehwiting and bass.

Good Luck to everyone and as ever Thank You for coming to Weymouth and supporting the local charter fleet; your custom is much appreciated. On behalf of the local skippers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our angling friends and customers.

always a challenge when accidently caught on bream tackle, pout, huss, wrasse, gurnard and sometimes a decent wrasse, bass or bonus cod. All these species having been turning up along with tackle trashing porbeagles. The sand banks in Weymouth Bay, the Shambles Bank and Banks to the west of Portland have been very good for rays with blondes, undulates and spotted taking mackerel/squid baits fished (usually) at anchor. Turbot have also provided a lucky bonus for some fortunate anglers.

Bream 3lb 2oz Peter Rogers sally ann Jo

Bream, John Guntrip, sally ann jo

It’s interesting to note that local commercial fishermen using nets have been catching turbot, plaice and sole in good numbers from marks very close to popular angling spots which usually just produce the occasional fish on the baits. The fish are definitely there although at times we anglers must think the sea is barren. It is quite an eye-opener to see what is caught in static nets and the size of some of these flatfish, especially the turbot. The whiting started to move into the marks to the west of Portland by mid November and this species is set to progress further east into Weymouth Bay and onto the Adamant Bank. The Adamant becomes a firm favourite for the charter boats for December through to February. It’s a short ride from Weymouth Harbour to the Banks which produce a surprising variety of species during these next three months. Conger have been all the ground this year but will feature on this particular bank providing entertaining tussles on the light tackle intended for whiting. The bank is also very good for the various rays previously mentioned and there is an excellent change of a few bass taking the mackerel/squid/ worm baits aimed at the whiting.

Offshore, the Weymouth wrecking boats will be targeting the pollack which, I am assured by divers, have been on certain wrecks used by the charter fleet since September. There will be specialist bass trips into the Portland Race or from St Alban’s Head east of Weymouth. Weymouth has lost another of its fine charter boats with skipper Clem Carter, owner of the superb Southboat Catamaran ‘Wild Frontier’, deciding it was time for him to review his future and ‘move on. Wild Frontier is moving to Bristol Channel Charters based in Ilfracombe for a more varied career involving diving and sight-seeing trips as well as angling….and we wish the new owner the best of luck with what is one of the finest of the South Boat Cats. ANGLING TRUST CALLS FOR A LIVERELEASE RECREATIONAL UK BLUEFIN TUNA FISHERY Representatives of the Angling Trust and the campaign group Bluefin Tuna UK met with supportive MPs at the House of Commons to launch a joint campaign to establish a properly regulated, science-based, live-release UK tuna fishery which would be world-leading and would set a new benchmark for how such fisheries should be managed worldwide. Over the last three years, huge Atlantic bluefin tuna have appeared late each summer in UK waters. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) began a stock recovery program in 2007 which has seen numbers recover sharply from the danger levels of 10 years ago. From Cornwall and Wales to the Outer Hebrides, these unique fish are now present in unprecedented numbers. Dozens of fish up to 320kg have been hooked accidentally, and released safely, by anglers fishing for sharks. Until the 1950s the UK had a thriving and highvalue recreational bluefin tuna fishery operating mainly out of Scarborough under the auspices of the British Tunny Club. Commercial overfishing of both herring and tuna saw stocks collapse forcing big game anglers to spend a small fortune pursuing these magnificent fish overseas rather than supporting the tourist economy back in Britain. The campaigners believe a live-release recreational fishery could help many deprived coastal communities in the UK to reinvent themselves as world-class bluefin tuna angling destinations attracting overseas visitors spending millions of pounds supporting much needed jobs and businesses in the process. In response to the stock revival ICCAT is increasing the global quota from a low point of 12,000 tonnes to 38,350 by 2020. The EU is a member of ICCAT and has 16,000 tonne quota – all but 1-2 per cent of which is allocated to commercial interests predominantly in Spain, Italy and France. ICCAT requires member states to allocate a proportion of their quota for the purposes of sports or recreational fishing. In common with Ireland, Denmark and Sweden the UK has no share of this EU quota and is therefore unable to fish for them either commercially or recreationally.

Brexit Opportunity Once Britain leaves the EU anglers are calling on the UK government to apply to ICCAT for part of the ‘reserve’ quota held for new ‘artisanal’ fishery opportunities. As well as the huge economic and employment impacts this new UK fishery could, contribute significantly to existing science based research program aimed at increasing our knowledge of this iconic and highly migratory

game fish. Steve Murphy, Director of Bluefin Tuna UK said: “We are proposing the introduction of a licensed fishery for recreational anglers which would control the number of vessels deliberately targeting tuna along with a mandatory reporting and monitoring system. Controls on the tackle would help ensure the best fish welfare conditions in order to limit mortality, although this remains remarkably low at less than 5 per cent. This fishery would set a new benchmark in sustainable management of a recovering species. putting the interests of the fish at its heart and contributing to the government’s ambition in its 25 Year Environment Plan for the UK to develop world-leading fisheries management. There are currently tagging programs taking place across Europe using recreational angling to gather much needed scientific data to help understand the stock better. A large-scale research program, as part of any UK live release fishery, would allow anglers to contribute to essential scientific research of the stock and its future management.” David Mitchell, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust said: “The return of giant Bluefin Tuna to our shores provides the UK with a once in a generation opportunity to establish a sustainable, economically optimal, scientifically important fishery for bluefin tuna right here in Britain. The authorised involvement of committed and conservation minded anglers in the fishery would not only add significantly to our knowledge of these tremendous fish but would guard against moves to reinstate unsustainable commercial harvesting and the inevitable illegal fishing that would occur if no one was looking out for the stocks. A live-release recreational fishery would be a win-win-win by contributing to better science, allowing the rebuilding and recovery of the population and delivering huge economic and employment benefits to coastal communities from Cornwall to the West coast of Scotland.” Keen Angler and North Cornwall MP Scott Mann said: “It has been nothing short of fabulous to see these huge and iconic creatures aggregating off the Cornish coast in recent years. It would be a massive boost to our coastal communities if the government was to take up these proposals and allow local anglers to enjoy world class catch and release big game fishing right on our doorsteps. I would love nothing more than to be able to lure mad keen anglers away from Florida and Mexico in favour of the Cornish Rivera!”

ANGLING TRUST URGES GOVERNMENT TO DELIVER A REAL ‘BREXIT DIVIDEND’ FOR UK FISHERIES The Angling Trust is pleased to see the government bringing forward its long awaited Fisheries Bill setting out the future management of UK waters following our withdrawal from the European Union but doubts that it will deliver the promised ‘Brexit Dividend’. The Trust welcomes the acknowledgement of recreational sea angling for the first time in UK legislation but is disappointed to see that proposals support the continuation of the existing system of allocating fishing quotas. An opportunity is being missed to radically reform how access to a public resource is allocated. We argued that the government should give notice of ‘reasonable expectation’ to existing quota beneficiaries in order that the UK can be free to allocate fishing opportunities based on the concept of optimal utilisation where social, economic and environmental criteria are assessed and fishing opportunities granted based on these principles. This would mean more fish for the economically significant sea angling sector and better marine conservation. The new Fisheries Bill, which was published today, states: The Fisheries Bill is a major milestone in delivering our promise to take back control of our waters, and decide who may fish in our waters and on what terms. It creates the powers to build a sustainable and profitable fishing industry, one which is in the best interests of the whole UK and future generations. The Bill delivers a Green Brexit by extending powers to protect and enhance our precious marine environment. A recent Greenpeace report, Unearthed, revealed that failure to reform the system for allocating quota: “would leave 29% of the UK’s fishing quota in the hands of just five families on the Sunday Times Rich List – and around half of England’s quota in the hands of overseas interests.” Back in July the Angling Trust produced a comprehensive submission to the Fisheries White Paper which argued for: An end to the effective privatisation of a public resource into the hands of a few commercial interests.

A new fishery management regime that applied the optimal use of fishery resources recognising the far greater economic benefits of recreational sea angling over pure commercial harvesting. Adopting best practice from overseas including the legal obligation to rebuild over fished stocks. Sustainable public access to a public resource for both recreation and amenity. More resources for enforcement and conservation and a reform of the IFCAs and MMO. The designation of recreational only species such as wrasse, bass, tope, smoothound and flounder to deliver optimal benefits. The incentivising of sustainable, low impact fishing, including angling, to support jobs and coastal communities rather than simply using additional quota as a financial instrument by allocating fishing opportunities to the highest bidder. Martin Salter, Head of Campaigns at the Angling Trust said: “It’s abundantly clear that the Fisheries Bill has been rushed out this week to demonstrate that ministers have been addressing some of the future challenges and opportunities that will arise from the UK leaving the European Union. However, the disappointingly timid nature of this Bill as currently proposed means there is likely to be precious little by way of a Brexit dividend for either recreational sea angling or conservation. The failure to commit to reform the discredited quota system means that the privatisation of our publicly owned fish stocks continues as before. Leaving 29% of the UK’s fishing quota in the hands of just five rich families and around half of England’s quota in the hands of overseas interests is hardly ‘taking back control’.” He added: “Whilst we welcome the recognition of sea angling on the face of the Bill and the commitment to consider allocating ‘new fishing opportunities” and grants our sector, without major reform of commercial over fishing we fear that this might see anglers and conservationist scrabbling around for ‘a few fish flavoured crumbs’ after the harvesters have filled their nets.” The Angling Trust is shortly to meet with senior officials at Defra to go through the new Bill in detail to seek clarification and reassurance and to suggest potential improvements. Ends...

GOOD WEATHER AND FISHING ENSURE A GREAT FINAL CASTING FOR RECOVERY UK & IRELAND RETREAT FOR 2018 Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland, the medical fly-fishing programme for ladies who have, or have had breast cancer, held its final retreat of 2018 at the Mount Falcon Estate in Ballina, Co Mayo, Ireland last weekend (19-21 October). Organiser Sue Shaw said: “Thirteen ladies attended the retreat, three from England and 10 from across Ireland, coming from Belfast in the north to Cork in the Republic of Ireland. “The weather could not have been kinder, with hardly any wind and temperatures of around 14 degrees – perfect for our retreat schedule – and all the ladies caught fish, a few taking them home to enjoy with their families. “The fly-tying session also was a huge success, as always, and one of the ladies actually caught a fish on the fly she had tied.” The Mount Falcon Hotel also presented Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland with a cheque for €1,655 which was from a fundraising afternoon

tea event held there last December. Sponsorship for the event was received from the following companies – Allure, Archers, Balla Florists, Bella Beauty, Belleek Castle, Blooms ‘n’ Things, Dee Al Shamaa Makeup, Eden Flowers, Elemis, Escape, Foxford Woollen Mills, Gilmartins, Hummingbird Cakes, Jaad, Mount Falcon Spa, Mount Falcon Estate and Rafferty’s. Sue Shaw added: “We are incredibly grateful to Mount Falcon for their support over the years and for this donation. Casting for Recovery retreats are offered free to the ladies who take part and this generous gift will help us to fund next year’s programme.” Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland is run by The Countryside Alliance Foundation (TCAF), the charity set up to increase access to the countryside and to use it for education, fun and healing. It works on the simple principle that fly fishing is wonderful therapy for those recovering from breast cancer. The programme takes ladies on a two-day

residential retreat where fly fishing tuition is part of a packed itinerary that also includes counselling, relaxation and medical advice. The residential retreat aims to help both body and mind, with the medical and counselling aspects complementing the gentle physical therapy of the fly-casting motion. We are extremely grateful to the fly fishing and medical volunteers who take time to ensure that

the ladies all enjoy their weekend and to our generous hosts. The trip to Mount Falcon was our final retreat of the year but retreats start again across UK and Ireland in the spring. We very much look forward to returning to Mount Falcon in 2019, from 21-23 June.

ANGLING TRUST PUSHES FOR FAIR BASS DEAL AND END TO FIXED NET FIASCO

EU Commission Publishes Proposals for Bass Fishing Opportunities 2019 The Angling Trust has welcomed the EU Commission’s recently published proposals for bass fishing opportunities in 2019 which, if agreed by ministers, will eliminate targeted fixed netting and allow anglers to retain one bass per day for seven months of the year – from April through to October 2019. However, having lobbied vigorously over the course of 2018 to get a bag limit re-established in October of this year, after preliminary scientific estimates wildly overstated the impact of recreational fishing, the Angling Trust is pushing for the bag limit to be increased further in 2019. Scientists are currently calculating the impact of various bag limit options put forward by the Angling Trust which would see the UK public’s ability to catch bass for recreational or personal consumption increased, while still keeping the fishery within safe scientifically advised overall limits. The Angling Trust and campaign group Save Our Sea Bass discussed various bass limit options with the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, at a recent fisheries stakeholder meeting. The rights of UK and EU citizens to take bass have been disproportionately curtailed over recent years in favour of supporting commercial fishing interests. Before the bag limit was reestablished in October 2018, the public had been completely banned from catching and eating their own bass from January to September 2018, a situation the Angling Trust said should ‘never be allowed to happen again’. One of the most significant and welcome developments in the Commission’s proposals is a 1 per cent cap on landings of bass from fixed nets, to stop fixed netters cynically abusing the allowance intended only for ‘“unavoidable” bycatches of bass. A percentage cap on fixed nets would eliminate large, targeted, catches of

bass masquerading as unavoidable bycatch. David Mitchell, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust, said: “With the bass stock beginning to show signs of recovery there’s still no room for complacency and it is critical that the UK and EU stay on course in order for all stakeholders to reap the benefits of a fully recovered stock in years to come. This means keeping the nets out of the fishery, as far as possible, and keeping it open only to sustainable hook and line and recreational fishing. Anglers were banned from keeping any bass for most of this year, which was an outrage. Banning public access to a publicly-owned resource while allowing a small number of commercial operators to continue fishing for private profit was one of the low points of EU fisheries policy. All we are asking for in 2019 is a fair and sustainable share of bass fishing opportunities as we continue to play our part in helping to rebuild stocks that were driven to the brink through no fault of the public who enjoy fishing for bass recreationally.” David Curtis, Save Our Sea Bass Conservation Officer, said: “The science shows that sea anglers have never been the problem in the bass fishery and have been unfairly and disproportionately restricted. Recent ICES calculations indicate there is room for the bag limit to be increased in 2019, whilst keeping overall landings at a sustainable level and enabling the stock to recover. Some fixed netters have been illegally targeting bass and landing them as “unavoidable” bycatch. A percentage of daily catch restriction would stop them in their tracks. Sea anglers need to get behind the campaign to Get the Nets Out! The Angling Trust and Save Our Sea Bass met with UK Fisheries Minister George Eustice this week to urge him to stand firm against efforts to water down the Commission’s proposals.

The Mersey was on top form for this final round of the series. Despite wet and windy conditions, fish fed from the start with plenty of whiting, dogfish, codling, dabs (and a few pouting) to sandeels, mackerel and crab baits. There was some shelter from the north westerly wind on the upriver Town Hall bank and the match was won here by Lancaster’s Dave Hutchinson. The top scorer on Maddock Bank was Tomos Hughes. With league rival Bill Lindfield away on Team England duties in North Wales, John Waugh’s zone win has earned him the championship; he had already sewn up the NWASAC Personal Members title. On Thursday evening the 18th October in very good weather conditions Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition, in which 14 club members fished and 12 weighed in fish consisting of undulate ray, pouting, whiting, dogfish and codling. 33 fish were caught and weighed for a total weight of 39lbs 15.4oz and only edible fish were retained. All others were released straight after weighing. The best fish of the competition was an undulate ray weighing 9lb 3.8oz caught by Gavin Sloper. Results: Gavin Sloper 11lbs 8.2oz 1st 2nd Andy Hopkins 7lb 8.6oz 3rd Paul Dibden 5lb 15.2oz 4th Roland Blomfield 5lb 11.8oz 5th John Sloper 2lb 8.4oz 6th Ben Daniels 2lb 8oz, 7th Ollie Hopkins 2lb 4.4oz 8th Keith Panks 1lb 14.8oz.

LDSFC Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club. Large boat competition. On the 23rd of October 2018, ten members fished the Club’s monthly large boat competition aboard ‘Private Venture’ skippered by Arthur Savage. Given such an excellent forecast, a number of marks were fished throughout the day south of the Needles, with the first producing an excellent amount of whiting up to 2lb 8oz and several rays. As the day progressed a move further south to a wreck really paid off and provided excellent sport through the tide with large pout, rays, good sized congers and a fine bullhuss. Noteworthy fish included near specimen pout of 2lb 13oz to Andrew Foster and bullhuss of 10lb 15oz to Harry Gray. The largest conger eels fell to Derek Smith with a fish of 39lb (which nets him the Conger Cup) and Arran Harmer with a fish of 35lb. LDSFC On Sunday Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its 10th shore competition which was a roving competition. The weather was not at its best with a very strong north easterly wind which made temperatures feel very cold but mainly dry. Seven club members signed on and five weighed in fish consisting of ballan wrasse, garfish, dogfish, pollack and pouting. 12 fish in total were weighed in for a total weight of 11lbs 15 3/8oz. The best round fish was a ballan wrasse weighing 3lb 8 7/8oz caught by Andy Hopkins. This was also the best specimen fish. No flat fish were weighed-in so this pool is a rollover. Results: 1st Andy Hopkins with 5 fish for 6lb 8 7/8 oz, 2nd Danny Panks with 3 fish for 2lb 13oz, 3rd Steve Pitman with 2 fish for 1lb 9 ¼ oz, 4th Pete Tomkins with 1 fish for 9.4oz, 5th Keith Panks with 1 fish for 6.8oz. Roland Blomfield and Terry Kempton both blanked.

LDSFC Recreational Boat Trip 31st October. On Wed 31st October 8 members of Lymington and District Sea Fishing Club boarded Isle of Wight Charter Boat “Rebecca May” for a day’s recreational fishing. The fishing plan for the day had to be changed due to weather conditions. With a brisk south easterly it was decided the best option would be to stay in the Solent where we would be sheltered from the wind. With the tide turning lines were dropped in a deep watermark and soon fish were being caught with the dogfish and pout taking the baits intended for the hoped for cod along with a black bream for Nelson Phillips, and an undulate ray of 5lb 12oz for Alan Rutter, and a thornback ray for Brian Rose of 7lb 11oz. Recreational Trip dates for 2019 have been planned and anyone interested in taking part should contact Robin Lane 07876 471901 for details

Veals Winter League The 2018 Veals Winter League is nearing climax after round 6, the penultimate match. The competition was fished at Littletonupon-Severn in South Gloucesterhire. By far the hardest match of the league so far. The anglers were all extremely lucky to get a break in the weather after a stormy period. Conditions were ideal with very little wind and no rain. This made the fishing quite a pleasant experience, but a serious lack of any sizable fish didn't help the contest. Sea angler Jack Reynolds of Worlebury did really well, in only his second Veals League match, winning B zone. The twelve-yearold junior beat some well seasoned senior match anglers in B zone, including, the league leader, Steve Ace and Keith Warren. Jack's catch weighed in at fourteen and a half ounces enabling him to scoop the main prize of £35.

Shirley SAC Here is the result of our latest match which was a Shallow Boats comp held on Sunday 28th October. Fishing was restricted to Southampton Water only due to the cold north easterly winds which saw 9 of the 12 members afloat weigh in 25 fish for 11k 039gms. Species were Flounder, Pout, Wrasse, Whiting & Thornback Ray withe best fish being a Thornback Ray of 5k 386gms caught by Adrian Groves.

BEXHILL FESTIVAL OF THE SEA ANGLING COMPETITIONS 2018

Now in its seventh year the Bexhill Festival of the Sea Angling Competitions were, as in the last few years, organised by the Officers and Committee of Bexhill Sea Angling Club on behalf of Bexhill Festival of the Sea. Five competitions were planned from 9th September to 28th October. Junior Pegged Beach 9th September. Sponsored by Bexhill Sea Angling Club and Asso, this was fished on a catch and release basis with all fish eligible and each fish measured to the nearest centimetre, with the angler with the most total centimetres being the winner. Twelve young anglers competed and all but one caught fish. First was Josh Cato with 172 centimetres, Second was Harvey Plumstead with 118 centimetres, Third was Ben Gurney with 83 centimetres and Fourth was Connar Nowak with 71 centimetres. Beach Specimen Hunt 10th to 14th September. Sponsored by Bexhill Sea Angling Club and Asso, the week-long Beach Specimen Hunt was fished by nine anglers and for the first time the format was a photo catch and release basis. Anglers could take their photos along to two local tackle shops, Anglers Den in Pevensey Bay and Hastings Angling Centre for verification Fish were caught in nine of the eleven categories. Arthur Freeman was the overall winner and won the Bass section with a 44-centimetre fish and the Sole category with a 41-centimetre specimen, the best fish of the competition. Ralph Crosby won the Cod prize with a 39 centimetre fish and shared the Pout section with a 26 centimetre fish. John Trotman caught a 65 centimetre Eel to win this category. Colin Crosby won the Mackerel/Scad category with a 30 centimetre Mackerel and the Plaice/ Flounder category with a 38 centimetre Plaice. Jerry Robinson shared the Pout section with his 26 centimetre specimen. Kevser Ayhan caught a 35 centimetre Whiting to win this section and Mel Adrain landed a 14-centimetre Thornback Ray to win the “Any other Species” section. Bass Species Hunt 16th September. Sponsored by Bexhill Sea Angling Club and Asso the Bass Species Hunt was again this year fished on a photo catch and release format in what appeared to be perfect conditions. Anglers were hoping to repeat the 2017 catches where Bass of 80, 66, two of 58 and another of 30 centimetres were caught and released.

Unfortunately, this year the Bass were not cooperative and only one was caught a 37 centimetre fish for Alan Young who scooped the first prize. Our rules stated that if no Bass were caught then we would accept the longest fish of any other species to determine the prize winners. As however, no other fish were caught the second and third prizes were drawn with Glyn Morgan and Keith Erridge taking these prizes respectively. Boat Species Hunt (Flatfish only) 16th September with alternative date 23rd September. Sponsored by Saltwater Boat Angling magazine and Asso this was to be fished by boats launching from Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne unfortunately, both dates were cancelled due to the weather, so we are hoping for better next year. Pegged Open Beach Competition 28th October 2018. The match sponsored by Anglers Den, Pevensey Bay with additional sponsorship from Asso was fished by thirty anglers in a cold north easterly to easterly wind and despite these conditions twenty-five of the anglers caught fish. The competition was fished over two zones with prizes awarded alternatively for each zone. The results were: 1st (Zone A) Nathan Elliott with 552 points. 2nd (Zone B) Scott Brown with 292 points. 3rd (Zone A) Ian Hopper with 359 points. 4th (Zone B) Ralph Crosby with 238 points. 5th (Zone A) Paul Parsons with 292 points. 6th (Zone B) Tom Wells with 235 points. 7th (Zone A) Trevor Rooney with 283 points. 8th (Zone B) Keith Erridge with 206 points. Best Flatfish Bob Elliott with a 33 centimetre Founder. Best Round fish Tom Wells with a 53 centimetre Bass. Best Junior Sean Bunting of Bexhill Sea Angling Club with 62 points from Zone B. The prizes were presented by Kevin Morgan of Anglers Den. The Committee of Bexhill Festival of the Sea would like to thank Bexhill Sea Angling Club, Anglers Den, Pevensey Bay and Hastings Angling Centre for their help. We would also like to thank our sponsors Anglers Den, Asso, Bexhill Sea Angling Club and Saltwater Boat Angling magazine.

TACKLE SHOPS DIRECTORY

FLY AND LURE FISHING ON THE JURASSIC COAST

TACKLE SHOPS DIRECTORY

By Richard Lyon-Wilson

Well here on the Jurassic coast the season is slowly drawing to and end mostly due to stormy conditions and stirred up water, I have to say that the Bass season here have been truly epic!with some amazing specimens being caught from the shore on both Fly and Lure. All my guided clients have managed pb's with some new to the sport catching some absolute(Clonkers)giving them a new addiction in their lives. I would happily say that 90%of all bass caught by myself and clients have been off the surface using a Patchinko 100/125.This has been tremendous fun and teaching a someone to walk the dog and then seeing their face when a big

bass smashes the lure off the top in an explosive manner is amazing. Bass fishing is not just about fishing in the day time, infact fishing with Fly and Lure is becoming increasingly more popular. Fishing with Lures such as white Senkos, Albie Snax, Needle lures (Jims lures)slowly at night has been devastating with some big bass being caught. A few great catches are still being had along the Dorset coastline with reports of fish 5lb plus still being caught.Lets hope the season continues a bit longer so that next season is not so far away. Next month i will go through my most successful lures and what to look for when fishing them.
