Simon Ellis’s Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) of 4lb 8oz, caught on fly from a Wessex river on 19th February. Simon’s fish beats Paul Mildred’s 10-year record of 4lb 4oz 8dr, also from a Wessex river. Ray Edwards’s shore-caught Brill (Scophthalmus

rhombus), ratified at 8lb 3oz, caught from the Chesil Beach at Abbotsbury on 17th November 2018, which beats Mr Fletcher’s 39 year-old record from Guernsey of 7lb 7oz 8dr. Kevin Copeland’s boat-caught Almaco Jack (Seriola rivoliana), ratified at 2lb 2oz, caught from a reef off Milford Haven on 17th October 2018. Kevin’s fish very narrowly beats John Varcoe’s record, caught just a few days earlier, of 2lb 1oz 14dr. Kevin’s fish had already been accepted as a Welsh record prior to his claim for the British record and, like John’s fish before, had to be identified by X-ray of a vital bone structure at the Natural History Museum. Jeff Fisk’s Derbio (Trachinotus ovatus), of 214 grams, caught on 6th October 2018 from Chesil

Beach in Dorset. Jeff’s Derbio is the first entry into the British record lists for this species. Gary Mitchell’s Spurdog (Squalus acanthias), verified at 23lb 2oz, caught from a South Devon shore mark on 30th November 2018. Gary’s fish beats Cameron Atkinson’s 2018 record of 18lb. The Committee would like to remind anglers that in the event of the capture of a potential record fish, the captor should first contact the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee without delay. Captors of potential record fish should contact the Secretary, Nick Simmonds, at the Angling Trust, on 01568 620447 or by email at brfc@ anglingtrust.net Nick will record the details of the capture and advise the claimant on progressing the claim.

THAMES ESTUAURY by Lee Bolingbroke

Well we are into our summer fishing proper now with all the summer specias being caught last day out for us was yesterday on the Sophie Lea Brightlingsea with some cracking hound sport all good strong fish testing our anglers to the limit and in shallow water so the fish could not get there heads down obviously all fish returned alive. And great news for the hermit crab stocks which seem to have recovered after the beast from the east wiped them out and now we are getting plenty to keep our anglers happy, some anglers can’t under stand why we charge a small pice for them well I can explain this, a lost pot comes to around fifty quid I lost three last year, fuel to pick them up and set them bait for the pot yup it all adds up if you buy frozen I think they are around eight quid for eight and they are frozen and not as good as fresh any way back to the fishing report on Sunday we had some great fishing early but the weather was atrocious with winds gusting upwards of 25 miles per hour but plenty of rays hounds and bass although the flood tide put paid to sport for a while due to a

very strong tide. As a charter skipper its always difficult explaining to anglers about the tide and you get a glazed look but it does play a big part in fish catching or otherwise. Tope are going to be on the agenda in the next few weeks fingers crossed we can have as good a season as we had last year this often hinges on mackerel appearences and obviously effects the quality of bait we can present, the fresher the better so hope fully we can put some great pictures on this magazine next month. Lots of anchovies being caught on Walton pier I have never herd of this before may be a new species for our part of the coast to catch. Bass fishing has been great again but has tailed off a bit now the heavy May bloom has saved many bass from the commercial Fishermans mono nets which is good news for us not so good for them as this algae hangs in the net making them very visible to fish, so thats it for this month got to get off to the boat and run out to pick my pots up for fishing tomorrow tight lines.

BRIXHAM / NEWS

COX & RAWLE GUIDING BLOG

OBSESSION - BRIXHAM

'The home of Biguns & Whoppers'

By Craig Butler

It was great to welcome back local angler Andrew Newton for another coaching come guiding session recently. Andrew was my first client when I first started my coaching and guiding journey just over four years ago. Yesterday’s session was one of those rescheduled sessions that had been rescheduled a few times for one reason on another. As fate had it, it was a good Omen . The previous sessions were shelved until yesterday and everything fell nicely into place. A lot of planning and preparation goes into every session to make sure everything is fine tuned and tailored to the anglers needs and requirements. Having an extensive knowledge of the marks is Imperative and only decades of experience will acquire this knowledge. Occasionally, plans can get scuppered . Either by un forecasted weather or the chosen mark is already occupied to name a couple. On these occasions, relying on this knowledge is key to adapt to the situation. Andrews session was almost one of those situations. As we walked down the long track to the beach a couple walking their dog back from there commented on how cold and windy it was !! Totally Bewildered by their comments we walked on in the hot sunshine in shorts and t shirt. Turning the next corner of the track and the stiff NW wind hit us, and a glimpse of a choppy woolie sea through the trees was not what we were expecting!!. The light breeze forecasted was definitely not light!!! No danger though. It just meant a different approach and adaption was needed. The plan was to target the local bass in the area with one rod and hopefully a smoothound with a second. Andrew had never caught a hound and his only bass was a couple of ounces. So hopefully the fish would play ball. After setting up and Andrew sending out a crab bait for a smoothound, the second rod was set up with a running ledger armed

with surgically sharp Cox and Rawle uptide hooks baited with a whole squid. The Cox and Rawle surf and uptide hooks are fantastic hooks in the 4/0 size for a whole squid bait . They are also strong enough to bully a good fish if necessary and will ultimately pull out of a snag if caught up on rough ground. The look I got from Andrew was priceless when I mentioned he needed to launch this squid a huge one meter out!! Two meters was ok if he couldn’t cast just the one !!! With two rods out , it was time to catch our breath after the mile walk and quick set up . Barely had we caught our breath the margin squid rod was bouncing around . Unbelievably the fish didn’t hook up . Next drop and the rod slammed over in minutes.. fish on.. and a fine plump bass was thrashing in the surf and then being held aloft by Andrew for a photo. I quickly replaced the squid, and Andrew still in awe of his bass dropped it out again. No sooner had the rod been put in the stand, it was bouncing aggressively and seconds later a second bass was in his hands. What a great start to the session. After a good few non hook ups that was it on the bass front. As the session moved on Andrew insisted I put a rod out and I caught a codling a bass and a hound. As we wound down the session and started to slowly pack away Andrews hound rod that hadn’t moved alright was off and after a few minutes of give and take a Starry smoothound was soon unhooked and being held for a quick photo before being weighed and returned. What a great way to start and end a session. A personal best to start and another to finish. I think it’s fare to say Andrew as elated and rightly so. Another happy ending to a guiding session and the 11th and 12th personal best fish caught so far this year on my Bristol Channel Somerset guiding/ Coaching sessions.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

SIZE MATTERS

By Scott Smy

Most of the better captures that have occurred this month have involved anglers either travelling up to North Devon or the low water reefs of the West Somerset coastline chasing smoothhounds. Whilst the numbers seem a bit down this year compared to previous years, there are still some very nice specimens being caught. The best I have heard of so far is a starry hound of 1512 caught by Scott Clark of Rodbenders SAC. He also managed another of 13-15 the week before. Cracking fishing Clarko! Another angler keen to find the big smuts is Matt Parry of Castaways SAC. His reward for a couple of nights of near to no sleep was a nice brace of hounds going 12-11 and a larger one of 14-13. A trip back to the same mark the following evening resulted in no hounds for Matt but a new PB to fellow club angler Rob Batten which went 1410. A fair few bream are showing from a number of the local estuaries including the Tamar, Kingsbridge and the Yealm. Crab definitely seems to be the bait to use this year although lugworm and ragworm will work, especially if there are numbers of smaller fish around. The best bream I have heard of so far is an absolute beauty of 6-12 which fell to Rodbenders man Paul Fenn and was a new PB. The bream fishing should continue to be good over the next few months although weed can be a

problem on the larger tides, particularly at Kingsbridge. It’s good to see mackerel are now starting to show at the usual deeper water rock marks around the South Devon coast although reports from the beaches such as Beesands/Slapton are still a little patchy. However they should be pretty much everywhere by the end of the next month. It’s good to see Size Matters having returned to Plymouth after a winter season on the Mersey and chasing (and finding) barn doors up in Scotland. In addition to chasing monsters offshore at a mark he refers to as ‘Jurrasic Park’, Kev has recently returned from a 3 day trip to Guernsey. Whilst the fishing on the banks off the island wasn’t that productive (undulates, bream, gurnards etc), his anglers baggedup on the wrecks on the way over and back finding good numbers of pollack to 15lb, ling to 10lb, cod to 6lb and a single coalfish. On the private boats out of Plymouth, the fish magnet that is Jeff Brownlow continues to find some cracking spurdogs with the best fish of a recent trip going 21-8 which is a new wreck record for the Castaways SAC. Not to be outdone Fred Doey had a good spur of 17-11. Nice going chaps. That’s it from me for this month – enjoy the sunshine and happy dipping.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Sea Angling News, July 2019

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers

The mackerel have finally arrived onto the beach and seem to be there in good numbers at the moment. Its always a good sign to see them as shortly after most of the summer species will be present. Later in the year the mackerel can produce huge shoals along the shingle which in its self is quite amazing to witness. Targeting mackerel on light spinning gear can provide some great sport! It defiantly beats casting leads and feathers to the horizon. There seem to be a fair few gurnard showing at the moment especially grey gurnard. Last year saw a big influx of small tub gurnard which hopefully show this year but in greater sizes. The smooth hound fishing has been fairly steady with reports of some anglers landing 8 or more of these hard fighting species. The most popular baits to target these fish are peeler crab but some may also fall to squid baits. Craig Thorne managed a fair sized Hound using squid and black lug as bait so it just goes to show you don’t need crab all the time. Staying on the subject of crabs the dreaded

spider crab are still present in great numbers at the western end of the beach with anglers having to rebait their rigs in a matter of minutes of being in the water. The may water or may rot has now completely gone but there are reports of large patches of weed towards the Portland end of chesil beach. Ben Stockley had a hectic few hours recently on chesil resulting in a lovely mixed bag of fish which included- thornback ray, small eyed ray, tub gurnard, grey gurnard, plaice, dogfish, whiting and some mackerel. Ben also managed a few double shots with a thornback and a plaice on one rig and a hound and a gurnard on another session shortly after. Top angling for sure! Well done Ben. In the next few weeks the mackerel should be present in more numbers and I’m sure the hounds will still be about in numbers so make sure your drags are set if using crab and squid baits! Until next time good luck and tight lines…

Sea Angling News, July 2019

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins

A complete contrast to this time last year when we were basking in bright sunshine and temperatures hitting the high 20s and very little wind, this year we have had many storm fronts, loads of rain and strong winds. The local club Albion monthly trip certainly went with a bang, the day started catching plenty of Bass up to 5lb then as the fishing slowed the Navy exploded a 2000lb 2nd world war bomb just over 2 miles away, the shock wave hit the boat with such force it scared everyone onboard, the double explosion was shown on TV and was very impressive. Bream fishing took a dip during the weaker tides causing some to think they had departed early but as soon as the tides increased the Bream started to feed with a vengeance, the Dancing Ledge marks proved prolific with Keith Slater getting a triple shot of 2lb plus Bream,

Conn, Mark and Clive not to be outdone also landed many double shots with over 150 fish being landed only 1 was kept. This was also reflected across Poole Bay with plenty of Bream only smaller in size, the most noticeable thing this year is the influx of tiny Bream 50 to 60mm sized fish all across the bay which are hammering the baits. Those that have fished the harbour have been rewarded with some nice Plaice and Bream but the amount of weed had severely restricted fishing. The main talking point amongst anglers is the granting of the Marine Conservation Zones and the fear of the outcome, I believe there are plans for more stakeholder engagement and SIFCA will be looking at ways to implement a management strategy in the next 2 years after studying all the evidence.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

I’ll try to stick to the positives rather than moaning on about how poor the weather has been, I’ve probably done enough of that lately. Anglers onboard Silver Spray have managed plenty of top quality fish over the last month. The shorter range trips have been producing good numbers of bass on the right tides, not all monsters like Dave Mynors’ of 9lb 5oz, but still good fun on the light tackle. Bream fishing is going strong with some bigger fish starting to show up to 3lb 4oz the other evening. Our fishing holidays to Guernsey have been tough due to poor conditions but that hasn’t put the guys off, still keen whether its rain, wind or shine. The banks fishing for flatfish has been great compared to the last couple of years with plenty of good brill and turbot. Karston Murray caught a PB turbot of 15lb

shortly after a false alarm which turned on to be a blonde ray, not something you usually see on a live sandeel. We have just returned from our first Cherbourg trip of the year which has been a success. There was enough cod and pollack to keep everyone happy along with some good sized bream. On the middle day of the three we explored some new ground and were rewarded with a new boat record in the shape of a 1lb 3oz greater weaver. A truly beautiful fish that fights well above it weight. Notable fish on the wrecks have included an amazing 5lb 9oz tub gurnard for Peter Rae caught on a sidewinder and a 63b conger for Mike White. We are off to Guernsey again tomorrow and hoping for better weather. Fingers crossed.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

NORTH DEVON REPORT

By Wayne Thomas

A warm spring seems to have brought an early start to summer fishing along the North Devon Coast. Lure fishing enthusiasts have enjoyed some great sport with bass as water clarity has generally been good. Another encouraging sign has been the arrival of mackerel in good numbers with some large specimens amongst them. Joe Toop was thrilled to land a fine mackerel of 1lb 13oz during a session near Ilfracombe. Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs annual Putsborough beach Open sponsored by Sakuma, High Street Tackle Ilfracombe and North Devon based Chillcheater attracted a field of 49 competitors. Near perfect conditions saw over thirty ray registered along with bass, small turbot and the occasional dogfish. Ian Laird secured the £100 and a prize from the prize table with a small eyed ray scaling 8lb 4oz. Dan Welch took runner up spot and the pool for the best brace weighing a smoothound of 7lb 12oz and a small eyed ray of 7lb 2oz. Twenty anglers competed in Combe Martin

Sea Angling Clubs week long competition to catch the best mixed brace of specimens. The event was held in conjunction with the Lyn Sailing Club with proceeds split between Combe Martin SAC and the 1st Lyn Scout Group. Several anglers invested a considerable amount of effort into seeking out specimens from both boat and shore. The presentation was held at the Ancient Mariner at Lynmouth as part of the Lynmouth Maritime Festival. The winner of the event was James Fradgley Gubb who boated a fine specimen tope of 50lb and a blonde ray of 12lb 12oz a combined rating of 210%. Spotted ray have been a welcome feature of catches from the Ilfracombe area with several of these pleasing looking ray caught from clear ground.

LRF REPORT

Notable fish caught around the coast

By Richard Salter

Ballan Wrasse

Shanny

Black Goby

Corkwing Wrasse

Flounder

Goldsinny Wrasse

Although May into early June has been predictably slow and challenging at times, its given us the chance to employ a variety of methods to try and tempt some often fussy fish into taking our lures. With a bit of perseverance at times and chopping and changing at others, we’ve managed to pick up a nice variety of species along the way. We’re lucky that in parts of South Devon, Mackerel are a possibility all year round and although not around in big numbers at the moment, we’ve picked up a few of these hard fighting fish on metal jigs and even small plugs/hard baits fished slowly through the water column. A decent sized Mackerel is a true test on LRF tackle and has provided some exciting action! Wrasse have featured heavily in our catches in recent weeks, which is great to see. They are rather finicky and timid at times but scaling down with small hooks and short sections of scented lure (dropshot is my preferred method for this) has produced a decent number of fish when the going has been tough. At other times they’ve been back to their aggressive best and smashed a variety of lures, which is what we like! We’ve had a good mixture of Ballan, Corkwing and Goldsinny in recent weeks plus a couple of stunning little Rock Cook, which have some almost impossibly blue markings. The local Devon estuary marks have been a bit on the green side due to the May Bloom but the odd little Bass along with the ever reliable Blennies have featured in our catches. If all else fails, you can generally rely on dropping down into a gap between the rocks and finding a feisty Blenny to stave off a blank! We’ve even ventured across to Cornish territory to try and raid a few fish from foreign waters, the day we chose happened to be about the windiest day of the month which limited our options somewhat but with an adjustment of tactics we had some success. Small Flounder and even an eel fell to dropshotted Isome in an unusual location that gives the exciting prospect of catching both salt and freshwater species, with Perch and Rudd also being recently reported catches. Moving around, we also found Ballan

Wrasse and Black Goby before heading to the rock pools which produced Blennies and the mighty and ever aggressive Giant Gobies, these guys really rule the roost in the pools that they inhabit and will attack most lures dropped in the right spot if they’re in the mood. When conditions on the open coast have been unfavourable, heading for more sheltered areas has been quite productive. A recent trip to Sutton Harbour in Plymouth for a short after work evening session produced a handful of species in a couple of hours. Jighead mounted EcogearAqua Shirasu and Isome fished tight against the walls found Black and Rock Gobies and a couple of decent LRF sized Ballans, whilst searching further out with a slow retrieve picked up Sand Smelt. We finished up scaling right down and sight fishing for tiny 2 Spotted Gobies. A frustrating game but a good species to tick off for species hunters. Size 22 hook and the tip of a Gulp Fish Fry tail accounted for them eventually! It hasn’t all been plain sailing though, an optimistic trip to a local shingle beach in the hope of an early Gurnard or perhaps a Mackerel or Bass was a fruitless affair with the wind direction being unfavourable and stirring up the water to a chocolatey brown colour, not the best conditions for lure fishing! So although the fishing has been far from fast and furious, there has been plenty of variety to be found with a little persistence and a fair bit of moving around! As July approaches, we’ve really got the best of it to look forward to with summer species moving in and all species becoming more active in general. This should provide some exciting fishing and give us the chance to focus on fishing some different methods and maybe even put away the scented lures for a bit and see what we can catch on some of the stuff in our lure bags that has been gathering dust for the last few months! Good luck if you are getting out there in the coming weeks and while this rain continues to stop play why not head over to YouTube and check out Devon Lerfer where you can catch on some of my recent adventures.

A stunning butterfly blenny. The fish was caught in 60ft of water while using size 14 sabikis by Nev Andrew's.

While on her first ever boat fishing trip Frankie Price caught this cracking grey gurnard weighing in at exactly 1lb. It was tempted using rag and squid while fishing in the lyme bay area with her partner James "the pout" Trevett.... well done Frankie!

While trying out a new Dorset rock mark with friends Sam Truan bagged himself this monster blonde ray which tipped the scales at 28lb 3oz. It sets a new PB for Sam and one that will certainly take some beating! Congratulations from us here at the SAN!

Kelvin Spear has possibly just set a new Bristol Channel record on board Chris Buxtons Charter boat 'Channel Explorer'. Fishing out of Portishead, Kelvin has just landed this Dover sole of 3lb 12oz!

A nice Gilthead bream!

LANGSTONE

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club As you can see from the photos, the last month has seen weather conditions ranging from flat calm and sunshine to wind and rain. In fact wind and rain has predominated over the last two weeks and as usual I am envious of those who have the flexibility to nip out at short notice to take advantage of a weather window. Despite these challenges we have plenty of catch reports to share. The geography of the Solent area means there is always somewhere to shelter from the wind and if the worst happens, there are always mullet in the harbours at this time of year! Heber Crawford has been sending me mullet photos through the month, each one larger than previously, culminating in a corker of 6lb 2oz (pictured). This is also the time of year when big tope arrive in packs with some large breeding females among them. As usual with fishing, some days provide hectic sport and the same mark days later produces very few. Daniel Churchill, Heber Crawford, Heber Junior and Luke Bedson show some impressive tope but star of the month was Andrew Gilling with a tope of 68lb. The offshore reefs and wrecks produce pollack when the weather allows for a run to mid-Channel. Arron Shons and Tim Andrews show the quality of fish that can be caught. Carol Stenson also shows off a quality fish and deserves a special mention. Carol has been bravely battling serious illness and on the good days she likes nothing more than getting out among the fish. She has a magic touch, often scoring first fish, most fish and biggest fish over other

anglers on board. I think this proves that the way a lure moves is a deciding factor, because the tackle and location are otherwise identical. I take my hat off to Carol for both skill and bravery. We have an active Junior section in SMAC and it is great to share the joy in young faces as they show off their catches – Mikey Primmett, Jake Kelly and Lennox Patel show that size and enjoyment are not relative. At the other end of the seniority scale is the Southsea Marina Disabled Angling Club and this month we have a story about Terry Watson. Terry was previously a more active angler but after many less active years was finally persuaded to come out to sea again on the SMDAC boat Lady Elsa, with skippering services provide by Steve Kelly. A dogfish is not usually honoured by a mention but it is when it is caught in such special circumstances. Plenty of bass were also caught on SMDAC trips, demonstrated by Terry, John Wearn, Dick Stubbs and Dennis Haydon. Finally, we have a few photos from the Langstone Harbour Fishermen’s Association where John Evans won the Plaice Cup, Luke Scott second prize in the Pollack rankings, Ray Plomer the Pout cup and John Mardlin was overall champion. PS. You might think you need special kit to take a great photograph. Not necessarily, Heber Crawford uses his phone for very well composed fish selfies and I thought his rather angry-looking conger was worth including just for artistic merit.

BURNHAM ON SEA REPORT By Richard Saxby

The last month has been all about our juniors section. With less youngsters getting into fishing it is great to have 11 junior members which I think is the most we have ever had and hopefully they will continue to enjoy sea fishing into adulthood. It is important to encourage them and we hold a couple of competitions each year and recently had our first charter trip which was very well received. The fishing in Burnham at the moment is very good with plenty of rays, conger and dogs plus the hounds are in the bay and there are still some bass around. If the conditions allow then trips down towards Porlock increases the species tally and the chance of hooking into some sizeable tope. On Saturday 25th May we took 11 juniors out for a 4 hour trip from Watchet on Scooby Doo and Seafire. For most it was their first time on a charter boat and thankfully the weather played ball. Fish were plentiful with small eyed and thornback rays, conger, dogs, a hound and a spur pup. It was such a success I’m sure another trip will be arranged for later this year. Special thanks to club members who sponsored the event along with Mobile Marine and of course to skippers Steve and Shaun.

On Sunday 9th June we held our first junior comp of the year, just a short one over high water. There were 9 eager youngsters on 4 boats with the oldest being only 12. Fishing was hectic from the off and watching them getting stuck in, landing plenty of fish was great to see. Format was single biggest fish with Tommy Devey taking the honours with a conger of 18lb. Ava Saxby was 2nd with a hound of 13lb 4 and Lydia Devey took 3rd with a 13lb conger.

Fish of the month for May sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Stephen Saxby with a bass of 9lb 14oz and 123%. The next club comp is our 2 day species hunt on the 13-14th July. The next club meeting is on Thursday 18th July, followed on the 27th with our summer bbq at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

By Craig Butler

The past month has continued to provide local and visitors anglers with some fantastic fishing. Not only in numbers of fish but in the quality of the fish. We are half way through 2019 and there’s no doubt that it’s been the best first 6 months of a year in a very long time. Sea temperature will of played a huge role in this with the mild winter. In the Minehead area. The ray fishing has been superb. We’ve seen so many good quality small eyed rays caught and released its been remarkable. Not only the small eyed rays, but also good numbers of spotted rays and a few blonde and thornback rays amongst them on the sandy low and high water marks in and around Minehead. The thornback rays numbers are excellent and it’s a all year round target species from pretty much Minehead to Portishead on the English side of the channel and from Barry to Magor on the Welsh side. The smoothound fishing from the shore has been a bit temperamental and sporadic. There are huge numbers in the channel the boat anglers have proved this . It’s just being on the mark fishing when they are feeding on that mark. There’s so many areas that are not fished between the areas that are fished it’s no surprise they are often unaccounted for periods of time.

Bass numbers are excellent in the 1-2lb bracket with reports of better quality bass showing up in the upper reaches. Codling are still present with modest numbers of 1-2lb fish in localised pockets. These smaller codling will remain over the next couple of months feeding heavy on the rich pickings available to them. They will wax on some weight and grow healthy for our seasonal early autumn run where they will hopefully be joined by the migratory shoals. Weston’s sand point has seen the best of the specimen smoothounds so far this year with Nathan Gray bagging a cracker of 18lb8oz and many other anglers getting in on the action with fish to 16lb.

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

The Somerset reefs will still offer the opportunity for a specimen smoothound here and there. But the reefs are also covered in small strap congers. These can give great fun to catch, but are often a pain in the butt when targeting the hounds, bass and rays that hold up on the reefs. Fingers crossed the coming month will continue to spoil us all up and down the good old Bristol Channel. I hope you all find a decent fish, just remember “If you can dream it you can achieve it” Tight lines & happy hunting…

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT REPORT

By Tom Wright

We may not be experiencing the hot, balmy conditions that spoilt us all last year, but it certainly hasn’t put the fish off! Widely spread around the whole area have been marauding packs of smoothhounds ready to snatch a variety of baits before putting up a spirited fight. Success with the hounds has been found with typical baits such as squid and peeler crab, but it is worth noting that with the smoothhounds likely to be around for a while longer, you should board the boat with a supply of hardback crab. A very selective bait that has accounted for many hounds over the past weeks and indeed, just days before this report, a large 21lb specimen was landed aboard Osprey by Jim Bernie using a hardback crab cast uptide. Around Minehead, ray fishing has been good with boats seeing decent numbers of small eyed rays from various sand banks together with a handful of blonde rays, the occasional spotted ray and a few thornback rays. Alykat once again held another very successful ray competition with Ian Slater coming out as the winner with 11 rays, second was Steve Chilcott with a 20lb blonde ray and third was Malcolm Bayldon with a 12lb 8oz small eyed ray. The ray fishing around Watchet has been ever reliable with large numbers of thornback rays taken by anglers aboard Seafire when fishing over the mud and mixed ground, many in

to double figures along with a few decent blonde rays, small eyed rays and spotted rays to add a little variety to the day. Scouting around the boats on any given day, other fish that have typically made up the days catch reports have been, bull huss, a few bass, dogfish, some eels with a particularly notable eel caught by Craig Willis fishing aboard Osprey that pulled the scales down to 54lb 2oz (eels rarely come much bigger than this in the Bristol Channel) and then we’ve also seen the arrival of tope. The largest of which has so far been caught by James Thomas fishing aboard Teddie Boy. The large tope caught by James weighed 64lb 2oz and was tempted by a fresh mackerel. In the clearer waters West of Minehead the mackerel have begun to show (summer is here…honestly). Anglers have enjoyed some drifts with feathers, catching a few mackerel. If the feathers are jigged right on the bottom, there have also been plenty of small pollock hammering the feathers and putting up a good scrap, especially if using light tackle. Looking ahead, the fishing is expected to continue to feature all the above species with an increase in the numbers of tope. Some anglers are already turning their attention towards the potential arrival of a few early bream from marks West of Minehead to add to their species tally.

With the longest day soon upon us, in my books, summer hasn’t really got going. We seem to be plagued with strong SW winds which have led to many trips being quite uncomfortable or even cancelled. As we all know fishing can throw up the most unusual surprises, one of our most recent being an 8lb 2oz Turbot on a 1 up 1 down Bream rig. Local trips around Christchurch bay

continue to fish well for Thornebacks, Smoothounds, Bream, Plaice and the odd Turbot ! The only fish missing is the Mackerel, these are very thin on the ground. The offshore banks seem to have plenty of Small eyed and Blonde Rays on them. Even further South, the mid Channel wrecks have a steady number of Pollack on them along with the odd Cod, yes I did say COD and the occasional bonus John Dory.

The fishing this month has been good Offshore and Inshore with the exception of the Mackerel, I did say they had turned up last month but would seem only for a few trips then disappear again, We have seen a few Scad on the deeper marks which does help with the bait, so lets hope the Mackerel turn up again soon. The season has started off well with the Bream fishing, with numbers still holding up well. Offshore the fishing is a little hit and miss at times, however we did manage to find a sweet spot with Cod Pollock and the occasional John Dory

Sea Angling, July 2019

Port Report Flaming June, eh? The month for getting sun burnt at sea and drifting gently about on a balmy ocean. Well, maybe this time last year…but certainly not now! What a testing month it has been. The Home Internationals, fished on Friday and Saturday 114th and 15th out of Weymouth, took place in conditions that kept the rest of the charter fleet in harbour. And did these brave men ask the organisers to seek shelter and this aim to catch dinky fish? No, never. The competing vessels pushed the limits (as can be seen on the social media) as much as safely possible with the intention of catching the better fish. England were surely the favourites to win with many of the team having fished out of Weymouth many times….but the glory went to Ireland who won convincingly on Day 1 with a 510.57% total over second placed England on 438.85% and then confirmed their position with another win on Day 2 narrowly beating England on 391.96%. Ireland’s winning total was a commanding 919.83 percentage points tally with England second on 830.81. Wales came third on 639.81 with Scotland close behind on 612.31 Many anglers are not into competitive fishing but from the charter skippers’ point of view, such events are a godsend particularly during a tricky season when the weather is against them. Competitions tend to go ahead with the Weymouth/Portland sea area offering sheltered conditions in virtually any wind direction. Fishing might, in extreme conditions, take place right under the lee offered by the Portland Harbour breakwaters but at least the fishing is going ahead. Indeed many competitive anglers enjoy fishing close in with no size limits as there are stacks of fish amongst the breakwater debris and plenty of different species to aim for. June has been produced some good fishing inbetween the winds. The Shambles has been steady with a few very good turbot to 19lb along with plenty of undersize fish. Brill have made an early showing and an occasional plaice has appeared during the turbot aimed drifts. Anchoring on the Bank has been good for rays, plenty of dogfish and the odd stray bass. Bream fishing has been excellent. On Practice Day One, the England team recorded over 250 bream in a two hour session from an ‘east side’ mark. The bream marks also hold various species of bigger fish with spurdog, smoothhound, tope and conger all showing with the first three species appearing in good numbers. Wrecking has been erratic but some extremely good days have been reported with Pollack still the main species with the best fish in the 15lb range. There has been a scattering of cod but certainly no predictable pattern has developed for the skippers to work to. Alderney is fishing very well after quite a few lean years. Thank goodness for the faithfulness of you anglers who have kept coming on the Channel Island trips with little reward over the past five years but are now enjoying superb tope fishing and some outstanding turbot fishing. Skippers are saying ‘it’s just like the old days’! And now, as this report is being read, we are already into July with the longest day of the year already passed! Unbelievable how the season rushes by….but now we have the best of the inshore fishing to look forward to even though it has already been very good. July will see all the species mentioned above continue to feature although bream tend to become more scattered and start to move

towards the west Shambles/Portland area at the end of August. Bass fishing has also been pretty good this season and there will be more chance of these on the easier marks such as The Shambles. At least anglers are allowed one to take home….so the skippers will no doubt offer a ‘bassing session’ as part of the trip if conditions etc are right.

Pollack and John Dory - Fish On II

We are always hoping there will be a few more cod to come from the wrecks. Remember that for many years we hardly saw a cod and then, after the deluge of them in 1987, they started o become a more regular feature of the wrecking in this area. The last good year for this area was 2015 with 2016 producing bigger fish but much less than the previous year. 2017 and 2018 were very poor and at the time of writing, 2019 is not going to be notable…unless July provides a bumper surprise. With more mackerel arriving there will be increasing interest in the wrecking sessions at anchor for conger and it is often during these sessions at anchor that a decent cod will take a mackerel flapper or cuttlefish bait aimed at tempting an eel. There will be a few ling about which remains one of sea angling’s mystery fish. How is it when no ling are being caught the wail of ‘I want ling’ is heard…and when there are a few ling coming aboard, no-one wants them?? I recall many times of my crews filleting up the ling for customers only for them to left on the boat.

Tope - Fish On II

The Channel Island trips will continue to a degree although several of the Weymouth boats tend to limit their trips to the April-June period for the flatfish and tope and then remain in Weymouth for its ever improving variety over the July to October period. Bream become more of target species in Alderney and there should be a better chance of bass on the bigger tides although late August to October was always the best time for the visiting charter boats. Flatfish do continue right throughout the year as do the tope which move onto marks on the east side of the island towards La Belle France rather than the northern hotspots such as the famous Speedy Rock area. I’ve been writing the Weymouth Port report ever since Sea Angling News started up. I often wonder if anyone reads my gibberish…and after all, why should you. With this in mind, I was surprised when Daniel Clarke of Portland Marine based charter boat ‘Fins-Up’ asked me to give him a little mention and to include Portland in the port report. I told Dan that I did not think that my report would make any difference to his bookings…but it appears I was wrong. Good! I am pleased to report Dan has received increased interest and bookings this season. So…there is still some ‘Power of the Press’ which is great. As pointed out previously, the Portland and Weymouth based charter boats fish the same sea area and share the marks together. Our Portland colleagues are part of our friendly angling community that we are proud of and visiting Portland Marina does have some advantages over Weymouth with free parking and excellent on-site facilities with Taylor’s Mess Deck providing terrific breakfasts and pack lunches along with the Boat That Rocks Pub to welcome you on your return to the marina at the end of the day. Nearby accommodation is also much cheaper than Weymouth if a weekend was to be made of it….with the Cove Inn at Portland a superb hostelry to frequent in the evening. Thank you to everyone for coming to Weymouth….and Portland. Without your support there would be no charter boat fishing so please keep on coming! Here’s wishing everyone kinder winds in July and some decent fishing for you all.

NEWS

BACK TO BASICS By Martin Wood This month now that summer has kicked in although still very wet at times! When the sun does come out nice then it’s great to get some lighter gear out and travel light as well getting to some areas you wouldn’t normally go to and so figured we should look at a much overlooked but fun form of fishing….fishing with a float. Fishing with floats is a more active method of fishing which I enjoy a lot and allows you to fish areas sometimes that would normally be unfishable by adjusting your hook length so you can offer bait just above snags allowing you to catch species you wouldn’t normally. If fishing around rocky outcrops that normally drop into deep water you can catch fish pretty much under your feet! You can fish harbours, large groins, piers, jetties, pretty much any structure protruding into the sea or from the shore itself. Many of the more popular species you may encounter fishing this way would include Bass, Wrasse, Pollack, Bream, Mackerel, Garfish, Mullet, Coal fish among other and if you fish to put fish on your table then you have a selection of some pretty tasty dishes there. You can also fish for mini species should you decide to give yourself a species count for the year. As mentioned earlier you can use gear that is a lot lighter… so what gear would you use? A nice light rod casting up to 1oz is ideal or as some others do use a light 6/12lb boat rod, a reel of 3000 or 4000 size is ideal. I have recently purchased an Okuma

Trio SRS 4000 which is a solid little performer and a lot of reel for your money and suits all my Bassing, float fishing as well as lure fishing needs. The joy of fishing this way for myself is you can rove around areas with everything you need in your hands and a backpack if using lures, jigs etc you don’t even need bait. It’s great for getting out for short periods of time if time is limited and provides excellent sport with the smaller species available… pulling in a small garfish on a beach caster and 20lb line is no match and not so much fun, whereas on a light set up even a small fish like this can raise your pulses for bit. So what exactly do you need for a float set up? Depending on where you’re fishing then the type of float you want will differ in a harbour I would use a small crystal float with a couple of small shot attached, much like course fishing equipment if it’s a larger area where I may want to move out a bit further as well then I would tend to use a 40g float with a drilled weight and an adjustable rig (please see diagram) your line can be as light or as heavy as you like but I tend to stick to around 6- 8lb which I again find a good all-rounder but wouldn’t go heavier than 10lb Hook sizes I would say a good universal size would be a 1/0 hook (unless fishing for mini species in which case I use size 10 or 12 course hooks.) With a 1/0 its small enough for mackerel or wrasse but should be strong enough to handle larger fish as well. So get out there enjoy the sun, have some fun, stay safe and tight lines till next month.

West Bay SAC th

Win-Sum League Competition 12 June. On Wednesday evening the 12th June Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its 4th Win-Sum League competition on the Lymington Sea Wall. On a wet and humid evening 14 anglers signed on and all 14 weighed in fish consisting of bass and eels. As usual with this venue fish were landed right from the start, with bass being caught and then eels being caught in the last hour of the competition. Ragworm was the only bait used on this bait supplied competition. Only edible fish are retained. All others are measured and released immediately and gently placed back into the sea. The longest round fish pool was won with an eel of 58cms caught by Gavin Sloper. The longest flat fish pool was not won. Results: Zone No 1. 1st Chris Ellis 577cms, 2nd Malcolm Stote 481cms, 3rd Gavin Sloper 405cms, 4th Ben Daniel 339cms, 5th Paul Watson 260cms, 6th Luke Woodford 143cms, 7th Garry Mann 98cms. The first open match run by West Bay Sea Angling club was held on Sunday 9th June. 10 Anglers signed on and were greeted with fine fishing conditions all day. Unfortunately the fish had other ideas and fishing was poor to say the least. Only six out of 10 anglers weighed in fish. Plaice, Dab, mackerel, black bream, pollack and Smoothound all registering. The organisers would like to thank Durbeyfield House for the use of their facilities. 1st Steve Fowles. Dab and a Plaice Total 54% 2nd Dave Keel. Three juniors turned out to fish the latest match from East pier West Bay. The weather was not too good cloudy with rain showers and a South-westerly 8mph wind, water was coloured which is probably due to the coastal defence works that are going on at the moment in West Bay. Two of the competitors managed to catch fish, with one fish each both shanny’s.

I would like to give a huge thank you to all of those who donated the sum of £1,173 for Cancer Research UK through my facebook appeal. I have matched this with a donation to Oakhaven Hospice at Lymington which is very close to my heart. I have also received a number of donations just for Oakhaven giving a total raised of around £2,500, a superb effort by everyone! Also thanks must go to my guide James from James Opwood Mountaineering whom I have known for many years. I used to coach him, when he was a junior member of Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club. James gave up his time to take me up the mountain and is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to clambering up Scottish hills. A great guy to be with! 1st round of NWASAC Summer League, Sun 2nd June 2109, Rock Channel, New Brighton (37 rods) This opening round was fished on the same venue as the preceding day’s Sea Angler Penn Final but in contrasting conditions to that event with a strong side wind at this shallow low water channel at the mouth of the Mersey. Flatfish with a few school bass formed the bulk of the catches but the outstanding fish was a smoothhound for the eventual winner, local tackle shop owner, Steve Bonner. This fish was weighed at 15lbs 7ozs before being released. There were some sizeable plaice, mainly caught on the flood, with Matt White’s 43 cms specimen the best of them. Results: 1. Steve Bonner (Wallasey), 375 cms (Zone D) 2. Andy Young (Lancaster), 339 cms (Zone C) 3. John Waugh (Wallasey), 310 cms (Zone C) Zone A: Ian Griffiths (Eastham), 186 cms.
