SEA ANGLING NEWS HOW COLOURED LIGHTS ARE MAKING THE www.seaanglingnews.com

FISHING INDUSTRY SUSTAINABLE

Aquaculture Science have shown that their devices can lower bycatch by up to 60%. This is reinforced by experiments in fisheries the world over, some of which have used light to reduce bycatch by up to 90%.

HEAD OFFICE PROPRIETORS Keith & James Wigglesworth Sea Angling News Ltd, 9 Hayfield Close Minehead, Somerset TA24 6DE

Funded to date by Youngs Seafood, the James Dyson Award, Sir Richard Branson and Eric & Wendy Schmidt, SafetyNet have completed their proof of concept and are now ready to expand into batch production. This will enable them, with their scientific and industry partners, to explore new trials with other fish species in fisheries around the globe. They have created a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in order to bring PISCES to life and into the hands of fishermen.

Daniel Watson, CEO of SafetyNet explains: I’ve been working on SafetyNet for 8 years and we’ve made some really exciting progress and learned a lot during that time. We’ve worked hard because we see a real need for this technology, but we couldn’t have done it without our supporters. We’re now asking for one final push to help us bridge the gap between proof of concept and a device that can be used by many more people to accelerate the science and begin having a widespread positive impact.

David Parket, Head of CSR and Marine Biologist for Young Seafood says: “The results of this research are very encouraging and we now hope that the industry, Government and other organisations will come together to support further trials. Having been out on the trawler during the research and having seen the technology in action, I believe this innovation could have a positive impact on the industry and the future of fishing.”

Award winning start-up, SafetyNet Technologies is set to disrupt the fishing industry with its groundbreaking user-friendly technology which uses lights to attract and repel fish, thus eliminating by-catch by up to 90%. This patented piece of technology the team call PISCES will take fishing to new dimensions and has huge potential to make the fishing industry more sustainable. Imagine a fisherman only catching the fish he is able to sell. Not catching the wrong type, or fish that are too small. Not having to throw his bycatch overboard or discard of them on land. It sounds like a far-off dream but the reality is much closer to home, thanks to SafetyNet’s light technology. What makes this technology even better is that within just one day, the

fishermen will have made their money back due to the extra fish they can now sell. PISCES reduces bycatch by up to 90% and in an industry that is expected to become obsolete by 2048, this technology is needed now more than ever. SafetyNet have won countless awards for their technology most recently winning at Pitch@Palace and before that the James Dyson Award, Hello Tomorrow and The Observer Ethical Business Award. So how does Pisces work? It is so simple; the equipment fits easily onto any fishing net and about 10-20 are needed for the full effect to take place and the colour of light is chosen by and controlled by the Fishermen. SafetyNet’s trials with Youngs Seafood and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and

George Eustace MP, UK Fishing Minister has said: “I note the promising results of this trial as you outline, and am very supportive of innovative methods to improve selectivity and supporting UK fishing vessels in fishing sustainably.” The SafetyNet team have created a rewards based crowdfunding campaign and have a selection of rewards available for backers, from vouchers at Master Chef winning restaurant chain Wahaca, and limited edition artistic prints from Dutch artist Sue van Gageldonk, to more humourus rewards such as fish jokes. There is also the opportunity to get credited on their scientific papers. THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke The weather is now improving and spring /summer fish species have started to move in, it's been a slow process and many charter boats have been content to sit on a pile of rays all day well a lot of my anglers have had enough of rays, they have been catching them since this time last year. Going back fifteen to twenty years yup I am that old !! we used to have to steam up to ten miles to find a few rays and ten to fifteen fish would have been a good day now we are catching twenty to forty rays a trip and more, what the hell is going on and the old saying is too much of a good thing is bad for you is very true. So I am pleased to report that several bass have made an appearance as have some nice hounds up to sixteen pounds reported that's the good news the bad news is dog fish are in making some marks impossible to fish with so many taking

A nice Bass of just under eight pounds for Scot caught on Sophie Lea

A nice double figured ray for Roger on Sophie Lea

Chris Knottlys nice ray one of many caught on Sophie Lea in fact one of hundreds!!!!

good baits meant for more exciting fish. Several spur dogs have been moving through and Terry Woodrows boat Misty Lady from Walton-on-naze made the long trip out targeting them being rewarded with seventeen fish unfortunately this is a fast moving fish only around our parts of the coast for a ltd time and if you don't get the weather right it's a no go as it is a long way out for us. Several sting rays being caught now mostly very close in generally taking worm baits, a few tope are also being caught in drift fisherman's nets in very shallow water these big tope go in to shallow water to pup with less predation on their young one was landed in West Mersea of fifty odd pounds!!! so In summing up it is changing and will get more exciting as summer approaches so tight lines.

SPECIES LEAGUE

Plaice - Obsession

By Keith Wigglesworth

Friday the 12th of May saw 23 species hunters heading out of Langstone on board Kelleys Hero, Dawn Venture and Predator for the fourth match in this year’s competition. All of the skippers worked hard to put their anglers on to fish and it was work that was matched by the anglers in trying different techniques and rigs to catch them. A steady stream of fish was pulled in and the anglers vied hard to make sure that at the end of the day they had won their boat. In total, 17 different species were caught, ranging in size from congers and smoothounds down to tompot blennys and gobys. This range of sizes reflects how the anglers were able to quickly adapt to the different situations and locations that they found themselves in. At the end of the day the three boat winners were Richard Ferre, Colin Searles and Cliff Williams. John Bellamy, who came a creditable second on his boat takes the overall lead in the league table, closely followed by Richard Ferre. John also leads

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 5

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

It seems like this Winter and Spring have gone on forever but at last we are starting to see the return of some of the more warmer weather species to our shore lines and long may it continue! One such species is the gilthead bream which seems to have become a bit of a cult fish to catch over the past few years with many more anglers fishing the estuaries and creeks in order to latch into one of these prime fighting fish. One of the best I have heard of so far from the Kingsbridge Estuary was a new PB of 4-10 by Gary Mitchell which was one of a number he caught during a session with John Berry. Ross Ward of Pot Black SAC set a new club record with a nice gilt of 4-6. There does seem to be more gilts around this year compared to last and hopefully as we get into July and August we start to see some even larger specimens. Baits for gilts can be crab, lug or ragworm and generally neap tides fish better than the larger springs, especially when the weather is warm and settled. Some good sized Bullhuss continue to be caught from the rock marks around the Dartmouth and Scabbacombe areas, with one of the better fish caught by yours truly which went 12-15. Don’t let anyone tell you that the sea has to be rough to catch Huss as this specimen was caught within the first 20 mins of the session in bright daylight and a flat calm clear sea. Generally if Huss are around I have found that you will catch them early in the session. Another good Huss was a specimen of 12-3 caught by Kris Quenault of Castaways SAC which scored valuable points during the first round of the Plymouth and District Shore League. Aaron Launce also found a good bully of 11-4. The South West Sea Baits Plaice Comp drew a good entry over the 2 months it was fished and was won by the luckiest angler in Plymouth! Mike Hodge of

Rodbenders SAC weighed in a cracker of 3-4 to take first spot – well done Mike. Just days after the comp finished Steve Gray of Castaways SAC had a nice Plaice of 3-3. Most of the better plaice fishing this year has taken place from the rocks on the outer edges of the Salcombe Estuary around East Portlemouth. Anglers making the journey either up to the Somerset or Dorset coastlines continue to be rewarded with some good ray. Fishing a short mid-week trip Rob Batten and Danny Clegg had a superb session on the Small Eyed Rays landing a number up to 9-13 along with hounds to 7lb. Good fishing lads. Mark Hayman of Rodbenders made the trip to Minehead and landed a PB SE Ray of 11-7. Nice one Mark – you’ll have some awards to pick-up this year mate! Moving onto the boats and on his first trip putting the hook down for eels anglers fishing from the deck of Size Matters had some cracking sport on the Congers with eels up to 80lb along with Pollack to 17-5 and Ling to 20lb. This is a cracking to start to the year and hopefully this year we’ll see some ‘ton-up’ eels gracing the decks of our local charter fleet. Kevin tells me that so far the Cod have been quite thin on the ground but hopefully they will start to show in greater numbers as we move into June proper. Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 tells me that the reefs continue to fish well using both live launce and artificial lures. Plenty of Pollack are showing into early double figures along with some Cod and Ling. One of the surprise captures during a recent trip was a John Dory of 4-4 caught by Mike Page. Malc also tells me he fished the Dartmouth Plaice Comp during the past month and junior angler Finlay Wright of Seafarers SAC took the number first place for the Juniors in the 2-day comp. Nice one Finlay. Well that’s it from me for this month – I’m off after the gilts now! Happy Dipping.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

Despite a week or so of easterly winds the fishing from Poole has been very good in the last month. We have mostly been bream fishing, with great success on the marks in the Bay. The size of the fish we are seeing has been very encouraging with plenty of 3lb plus fish hitting the baits. The best bream so far has been Barry Culver’s 4lb 8oz PB which was caught on squid head. As well as the bigger fish we have had some good numbers on other marks too, usually a smaller stamp so plenty returned for next season. Our first Alderney

trip went well, with some cracking brill on the banks being the highlight. The wreck fishing was very quiet in late April but I’m pleased to say that its picked back up again now and we are starting to see the first of the cod. The mackerel have started to arrive as well, how long they will stick around for is another matter, we have had catches off Poole, Alderney and in the Channel. Looking forward to some more wrecking trips over the coming weeks to target some big cod.

POOLE & SWANAGE / NEWS

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Bream continue to dominate the inshore fishing with lots of good catches being reported. Today’s angler is far more conservation minded and return many more than they take for the table which ensures future stocks and the sport of this wonderful fishery. Unfortunately a large pod of Dolphins arrived which is wonderful to witness when they swim with the boat and jump out of the water but devastating to the fishing. During a club match with coincidentally Poole Dolphins SAC on board we were enjoying very good fishing until a large pod of Dolphins swam by and put the fish down, after a quiet spell the fish came back on the feed. The Poole Bream comp was fished by 55 anglers using 5 charter boats and 11 private boat the winning fish of 3lb 1 ½ ozs was landed by P Richardson fishing from a private boat the winning charter boat was Piscary skippered by M Rowe who was presented with the PCSA Pat Manley trophy awarded by his daughter Fiona who flew in from Portugal to present it. Chris Bowden landed a cracking Smoothhound weighing in at 14lb 4ozs whilst bream fishing using very light tackle, the fish had the upper hand for the 1st 5 minutes making several good runs and taking

Chris all around the boat eventually Chris gained control and landed the fish, his bait was a tiny squid strip presented on a size 6 circle hook and 12lb line. The Plaice fishing has not been as consistent as last month with catches varying from 46 one day to 3 the next, severe weed in the Swash has hampered the fishing. Along the shores and between the Piers has seen some of the better quality fish coming in along with a few Turbot and Gurnards, Melanie Burgess landed her 1st Plaice during a short afternoon family trip which saw lots more come aboard and her beating her brother (the fishermen) who was not amused. Wreck fishing has taken a slight dip in catch rates but still is producing Pollack and a few Cod, we are now coming into the prime time for wreck Cod so catches and quality will improve. The next few months see the best of the inshore fishing where lots of species will be caught and hopefully a few surprize ones will also hit the headlines. Poole Sea Angling Centre are running 2 x Winter Cod comps on 19th November 2017 and 17th December 2017 for more details please contact Andy on 01202676597

LRF & MINI-SPECIES By Andy Mytton in association with HTO

May brings a new opportunity for LRF and species hunters alike, the winter species have all but gone and the summer species begin to show themselves. Myself and my friends have set our own species targets for the year, last year i finished on 32 shore lure caught species, I have set myself a target of 50 from shore and boat this year and five months in i am sat on 20 so I have some way to go to achieving my target but things are looking up. Between April and May I have been able to tick off the topknot, leopard spotted goby and fifteen spined stickleback from Weymouth harbour, with the early May Spring tides the mackerel arrived on Weymouth piers in numbers more akin to late Summer sessions, ticking off those three during the week of the spring tides brought great joy to myself and despair to my friends still waiting to tick them off their list.

There are still flounder around inshore that have yet to spawn, most move out between March and April but there are still a number of plump fish around which are always nice to target on LRF tactics. Schoolie bass are active, the pollock are more obliging higher up in the water and the garfish are back which is a telltale sign of warmer times. Late May and early June will see the small black bream inshore around Weymouth, Poole, Swanage and Portland, if you haven’t fished a true LRF rod for them I suggest you have a go this year, it is such good fun and you will be surprised what other fish take your lures when doing so. A top tip is to fish either a small drop shot with pink isome worm or similar or a split shot rig, I will leave you to figure the rest out as the bites take some getting used to, fish a fast actioned, solid tip rod for best results.

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Fifty-eight anglers descended upon Putsborough beach for the annual Combe Martin Sea Angling Club Open and they met with ideal conditions. Combe Martin SAC give thanks to their sponsors; Sakuma, High Street Tackle Ilfracombe, Veals Mail Order and Kevin Legge. Thanks also to Putsborough Sands for allowing the use of their venue once again. The club also wish to thank all who took part with many anglers travelling a considerable distance to fish the event. Matt Druce won the competition with a blonde ray scaling 11lb 4oz. In runner up spot was Dale Kiff with a small-eyed ray of 7lb 14oz and third Gareth Pike with a dogfish of 2lb 5oz. The pool for best brace went to Matt Druce who added a small-eyed-ray of 6lb 151/2oz to his match-winning blonde. Over thirty ray were caught along with the inevitable dogfish and a few smoothound. Bull huss have been showing from rough ground marks with several double figure fish caught including huss of 12lb 13oz and 13lb 9oz to the rod of Lynton angler Rick Blackmore. Kevin Legge landed a huss of 10lb 1oz and Ollie Passmore a huss of 10lb 11oz. Ali Laird landed a brace of huss weighing 10lb 1oz and

7lb 13oz. Ian Laird targeted smoothound and landed a fish of 9lb 10oz. Several bass have been tempted from marks all along the North Devon Coast with fish caught on baits and lures. The Taw and Torridge estuary mouths have seen anglers catch several bass on fly Fishing tactics. Further up the estuary thin-lipped mullet have made an appearance with several fish tempted using the traditional spinner tipped with harbour ragworm. Ilfracombe Pier has been giving sport for LRF enthusiasts with a wide range of species tempted. Float fishing is bringing sport with mackerel and garfish. Out of Ilfracombe boat anglers have enjoyed continued sport with spurdog several topping 15lb. Bull huss, pollock, smoothound and a few early tope have also been caught with Bluefin skippered by John Barbeary and Reel Deal skippered by Dan Hawkins both finding fish for their customers. The run of large porbeagle shark caught early in the season has subsided. It is likely that shark will move inshore as mackerel numbers increase. NEWS / COSTA RICA

Sea Angling News, June 2017

TOURNAMENT FISHING IN COSTA RICA! By Ben Gilmor - Jackpot Sport fishing. I was lucky. I got the International tournament fishing bug when I was 19 and somehow ended up at the Marlin World Cup in Mauritius with a bunch of red wine drinking, fishing fanatical old gits, who quickly became my mentors in all things fishing & world travel. Hit the fast forward button & here I am living in Costa Rica running the only British owned charter business in the country. It was a dream come true to have my boat GOOD DAY, a 31' Costa Rican custom built Sport Fisher take part in the 2016 Offshore World Championships and to do the event again in April this year was another fantastic experience. We hosted teams from Australia, Turks & Caicos, USA, Dubai & Trinidad aboard GOOD DAY for this year's event, what a great example of the truly global fishing community that we have all become a part of. The 2017 Offshore World Championships brought with it the conclusion to another exciting tournament season here at the Marina Pez Vela. January to April is peak tournament time and things got started in January with The Pelagic Rockstar Tournament which was a brand new event for Costa Rica and proved to be a huge success! Think Rock bands, bikini clad Pelagic Girls, Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, blue skies, calm seas, beer & rum. Heaven…? or just another Fishing tournament in Costa Rica! Team PESCADORA won the Pelagic Rockstar event with 2 Blue Marlin & 14 Sailfish ahead of team TRANQUILO with 17 Sailfish & 1 Marlin. On my boat GOOD DAY, we were the proud winners of the small boat division for 35’ boats & under....more importantly we beat many of the big boys on their gin palaces also! We managed 1 Blue Marlin, 7 Sailfish & 2 Dorado in the 2 day tournament ....narrowly missing a grand slam on day 1 when a Striped Marlin spat the hook! We got our first mention & photo in Marlin Magazine which was a pretty cool milestone for our little British business! February was time for the Quepos Billfish Cup where team BILLFISH aboard a 37' Ocean took home the win with a staggering 36 Sailfish & 3 Blue Marlin in 3 days. They released 3 Marlin & 15 Sailfish on the final day of the tournament which made for a nail-biting finish & shot them into first position! I fished aboard SANTE’ a 60’ Hatteras and we placed 6th in this tournament with 17 Sailfish, a Striped Marlin and some nice Tuna & Dorado. March was time for the Jungle’s Edge Tarpon Tournament held at Tarponville fishing lodge. This ‘fly only’ Tarpon tournament was staged over 4 fishing days and included everything from seasoned pros to Tarpon virgins, all battling it out to take home an amazing array of prizes & the all-important bragging rights! Will from the USA had the best Tarpon of the week and took home several thousand dollars of Fly rods, reels and other great prizes. April was the biggest month in the calendar with two events, the Marina Pez Vela Open and the Offshore World Championships.

The Marina Pez Vela Open honours were taken by FISH TANK, a 63' Hatteras, a fantastic team and one of the top boats in our fleet. They released 3 Marlin and 4 Sailfish including a Blue Marlin, Black Marlin & Sailfish grand slam on the final day! The Offshore World Championships (OWC), the World Cup of Sport Fishing, is most certainly the main event and is a true global gathering of Anglers from all corners of the earth. 50 teams from 30 countries descended on Quepos with tournament HQ at the Parador Hotel and the Fishing & dockside socials taking place from the Marina Pez Vela. Qualifying for the OWC is no easy feat in itself. Teams must win one of around 100 qualifying events that take place all over the world the previous year. I personally would love to see a qualifying event on home soil in the UK one day but until then, there are qualifying events a little closer to home, two qualifiers in Croatia and others in Dubai, Kenya, Mauritius, Angola with many events in the USA & all over the Caribbean. We have six qualifying events each year here in Costa Rica and for a complete list visit www.offshoreworldchampionship.com/qualifying-events If you have always wanted to fish a world class Sport Fishing tournament, now is your chance! We are looking for teams of 4 Anglers to fish aboard GOOD DAY for the 2018 Costa Rica tournament season: 11-13 January 2018 - Pelagic Rockstar Tournament 14-17 March 2018 - Quepos Billfish Cup (OWC Qualifier) 12-14 April - Marina Pez Vela Open (OWC Qualifier) 15-20 April - Offshore World Championships (The Big One!) We can help put packages together to include all major aspects and the costs are not as prohibitive as you might think. As an example of a 2017 event, return airport transfers, 7 night's accommodation in a private villa, 2 days of practice fishing, 2 days of tournament fishing plus tournament general entry fee worked out US$2,499 per person based on a team of 4 Anglers fishing aboard GOOD DAY. We would love to hear from you if you have any interest in taking part in a future event. Grab some friends, drop me a line and who knows it could be you departing the Marina Pez Vela, January 2018 for day 1 of the Pelagic Rockstar Tournament! Tight Lines! WALES / BURNHAM ON SEA

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

Since the last issue we have seen an improvement in the weather and a lot more activity on the boats. The smoothounds are moving up towards Bridgewater bay and bass are regular catches which must mean summer is on its way. Friday 21st we held our presentation evening followed by a curry at the sailing club. Martin Quinn and Andy Georgiou won the lions share of the trophies with Andy also winning the Mustard Trophy for the most points over the year with Ultra White skippered by Nigel Devey winning the Porthcawl Insurance Trophy for the most points accumulated. A list of all winners can be found on our facebook page and website.

April 23rd was the Ray Farthing Trophy and 6 boats with 17 anglers took part in great conditions. This enabled boats to travel a bit further afield and was reflected in the number of species caught, 10 in total. Along with the usual conger, thornies and dogs we had spotted, blonde and small eyed rays, huss, cod, bass and whiting, not bad for April. Winner on the day was Anthony Georgiou with a hound on measure and release of 144%, 2nd was Anthony again with a lsd of 3lb 3oz and 106%, 3rd was John Quinn with a thornie of 12lb 10oz and 81%. As neither Anthony or John are members then the trophy was won by Aaron Devey with a hound of 80%. Pools was won by Dave Tether with a cod of 5lb and 28%. There were also 5 bass caught and released with the biggest at 7lb also to Dave Tether. May 7th was our Top Boat trophy and again the weather was great, very light winds and sunshine

most of the day. 5 boats and 11 anglers took part in another very busy match, 1st was Andy Georgiou with a cracking conger of 33lb 5 1/2oz and 133% which he kept alive and returned after weighing, 2nd was Martin Quinn with a hound of 19lb 10oz and 127% and 3rd Nigel Devey with a hound of 16lb 8oz and 106%. Pools was won by Richard Saxby with a bass measuring 65cm and weighing 5lb 11oz (returned of course!!). We are trialling a formula for hounds so all are measured and weights are then calculated so as none are brought ashore. It's looking good for June as long as the weather plays ball, hounds should be plentiful in the bay reducing travelling time but boats that venture further down channel could find the first tope. Fish of the month sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge for April was won by Richard Saxby with a Thornback ray of 14lb 3oz and 92% June is another busy month with our Thornback Trophy on the 11th, an away day comp against Brixham angling club on the 18th and our summer bbq on the 24th. We have a club meeting on Thursday 15th of June at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association and our website www.burnhamboats.co.uk

While on a Ray and Smoothound guided session over low water at Minehead today Craig sneaked a rod out after his client had settled in on the infamous Somerset sand. Second cast on half a crab a fine but very lean out of condition 17lb 12oz cod was hooked and landed. Not your average spring cod for May but not unheard of. Still somewhat bewildered, the next cast with the other half of the crab one of the target species was caught. Now that's value for money for bait. Just to add after a quick weigh and quick photo the cod was released and swam off gingerly after about 10 mins of tlc in recovery. It's always a great sight to see such a fine fish swim away .

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Keith Wigglesworth

All marks producing the goods with settled weather helping the Charter boats along nicely. Smoothounds better than ever with many great specimens to well over the magical twenty pound mark. As ever, hardback crab is as good as anything for these sporty characters, and with peelers touching £1 each, it's a no brainer as to what to use here! Squid will also take its share of hounds but the problem here is that the ever present dogfish will often get to the bait before anything else gets a sniff. Rays also very good with all species showing from recognised marks. The annual "Alykat" ray comp was again a great success

with 102 rays taken over the three day comp. this years winner was Dave Rugman with a creditable 13 fish taken in one day. Best fish went to Jim Grant with a 15lb blonde and Ian Green took the most fish in comp prize with 18 fish over the three days. As the season progresses the water will clear to the west when we can expect some great sport with pollack and bass. Tope also starting to make an appearance with several fish over 20 lb taken already. If you have last minute south coast cancellations, give us a ring as we can usually get out on strong southerly winds!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle The month of May has lived up to the high expectations we expect from the good old Bristol Channel. With the prospects being wide and varied we are spoilt for choice for a whole host of species, with many in specimen proportions. The return of the Smoothounds spreading up the channel is taking a grip for many anglers and as this report goes to print the big double figure hounds are just starting to show from a few undisclosed marks east of Watchet. The average stamp of the smaller pack hounds seems to be 5-9lb and when located are found in good numbers giving some great sport. The bass fishing throughout the channel has shaped up nicely with a nice stamp of 4-6lb fish along with a few 6-8lbers amongst them. Generally most anglers can only hope for one if they are lucky , but targeting them at localised parts of the channel a catch of 2 or 3 or more is on the cards for sure. The spring codling seemed to slow up as we reached mid May , with pockets of small codling and the odd

better 5-6lber popping up here and there and some how I manage one of 17lb12oz at Minehead. Not your average cod for the month of May. The ray fishing so far has been extremely good. The average size of small eyed ray recorded the past month has been good with many 8-10lber caught with the odd better one going 11lb. The spotted ray numbers have also been good especially in the Minehead area. Thornback rays. By far the most consistent of the species, and wide spread, especially between Clevedon and Watchet. A few quality bull Huss have also been recorded this past month with double figure Huss being regular catches. I'm going to cut the report short here so I can squeeze in as many photos as possible as it really has been a superb past few weeks here in the channel and the month ahead could possibly be as good if not better. Make the most of what's happening and get out and smash some personal bests. Tight lines, rods bent double and happy hunting

Fishing around the West Wight is ticking along rather good (early season) with most boats finding the fish There has been some healthy catches of Plaice, which have improved in size to over four pounds in some cases, they are starting to break up and spread over the whole area but concentrated pockets can be found if you look around (good bait is the key). Bream have also shown up in good numbers but are also spread over a large area, which means a little bit of looking may be required. NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, June 2017

Port Report There are times when we wonder if there any fish left on the wrecks and reefs in the English Channel….and this has been the case during the first part of May. It has been very hard work wrecking especially as there were signs that the cod were arriving in the first week of May. Later trips, including the Channel Crossing runs when the more distant wrecks are accessed, have produced very poor showings with just a sprinkling of pollock and cod with the younger local skippers saying that they had experienced their ‘worst day ever’. I say ‘younger’ because we of more advanced years have experienced this cycle on a number of occasions and have returned to port with the same air of despondency…but then the fishing picks up and all is well again. However, as this report is being typed (May 20th) this heady return to good fortunes has not yet occurred although today did see a tally of 20 cod netted aboard the only Weymouth boat optimistic enough to ‘try again’ on the wrecks. The inshore fishing has been much better than the wrecks with very good catches of bream to over 4lb, bull huss, some very good spurdog, smoothhound and tope sport, a few conger and a nice selection of rays coming from the various reef marks in Weymouth Bay and to the west of Portland. The Shambles Bank is patchy but there are still a few turbot and brill about and there’s even been a few plaice caught which is a very welcome sight. The Channel Island trips have also been hard with the majority of the turbot well undersized but the brill being of a good quality. The usual reliable inshore reef pollack around Alderney have also been very elusive. So, fishing has not been easy. We hope and expect June to be considerably better. Surely the cod have to turn up on the wrecks. The offshore reef pollack can’t all have been caught…. can they??? There will be mackerel arriving for the anchoring sessions….won’t there?? Inshore fishing from Weymouth will be more reliable with the variety that is usually on offer. The bream tend to scatter and return to the Portland marks in late August but the hounds and tope that have made recent inshore sessions so lively are expected to remain with fishing improving as some mackerel do arrive.

The banks have remained reliable for rays throughout the year and this will continue especially as most anglers return the blondes, undulates, small-eyes and spotted and even the thornback variety nowadays. It is good to see how so many anglers are fishing purely for the sport and a day out; there really has been a cosmic shift away from the ‘keep everything’ mentality of up until fairly recent years.

The Weymouth Angling Centres species hunt has attracted a growing number of competitors and the fish entry list is becoming increasingly impressive. Please ask your skipper about this ongoing event as he will have entry forms on the boat and there is the chance of very nice prizes and possibilities of substantial cash winnings. As well as the day trips out of Weymouth and Portland there is now a steady crossing of the Channel by many of the charter fleet. The majority of the trips go to Alderney as the Weymouth-Alderney run is the shortest UK-Channel Island distance and is the least affected by the tide. June sees a greater emphasis on variety with plenty of anchoring sessions taking place targeting bream, rays, tope, and huss as well as the popular bank drifting for the flatfish. A few bass have started to show but the charter boats actively avoid them until July when anglers are allowed to keep something for their efforts.

Some recent catches of Turbot on Duchess Ii

This year, so far, the winds have been just about on our side although there have been a few memorable trips for some when anglers have been fortunate enough to experience winds and sea of the sort that will lend themselves to a degree of exaggeration when such trips are retold to friends and wide eyed grandchildren in the future. I have recently been treated to a retelling of a hellish seafaring encounter of horrendous heights of seas…only for closer analysis to show this apparently happened on my own boat… and of which I have no memory at all!

And so we enter June full of optimism and expectations of long, sunny fish filled days which will wipe away memories of the current slow state of affairs. Let us hope this happens and YOU are on one of the Weymouth charter boats when it does!

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand

A month of unsettled weather and fishing in one. The spider crabs have turned up in style, what a year it has been for these pesky little so and so’s. It’s been a bit of a hit and miss month for many anglers and as the season hasn’t started yet we are hearing of some cracking sessions. There doesn’t seem to be two day the same, one tide someone will be bagging up, leading us all to hit the beach on mass with high expectation only to blank or struggle. So much so that I fished Bexi one Saturday with a guy from work. He hadn’t fished for Plaice before so on the journey I explained that we would be very lucky to have one or two fish. Only to then go on and catch 11 Plaice in 4 hours with 6 over 1lb. I would say this echos the story of many anglers over the Spring month. One thing for sure the incline in Thornback Ray numbers have taken lots of us by surprise. This year has seen a few marks along Abbotsbury pestered by these Rays. Whilst anglers have been targeting the more fashionable small eyed and Undulate Rays, I don’t think there are many complaints and it is a positive sign for the future. The last few days has seen

a steady increase in the Undulate and small eyed ray numbers, I haven’t seen any Bass yet and very little Sole action along the shallow areas of Cogden and Bexi. It comes down to how you make your hours on the beach and no expectation. Everything is behind this year that’s for sure, so hopefully soon we can have some settled weather which should improve the fishing! It’s been great to see the sport fish arriving. Last year seen us have a bumper year on the mighty Smooth hound with a few doubles turning up, which was unusual as a rule as the normal size is not much bigger than a dogfish around 2lb. If you haven’t fished for the hounds then please get out and have a go, its good fun. Ask all the local shops but all areas should see the numbers increase. Always aim to use Crab bait and remember to put your runner or ratchet on as these fish are famous for removing anglers rods from their rests. The initial run is like nothing you will see when they are running at full speed so take care and remember to watch your rods. Thanks to everyone for sending me your photos and reports as it makes all this all possible!

The water was clear and choppy with small amounts of may weed on the line at times. The daylight period produced some plaice, most averaging around 30cm with a few at 40cm weighing in at just over 1lb .Darkness was very slow for the time of yr, a distinct lack of pout(only 2 weighed in by Mike Brown) very few dogfish (6) and 1 hound caught by Darren Stevens. Here is the result of our latest match which was a Shore comp held at Stokes Bay to Haslar Wall on Sat 6th May. 17 members fished with 16 weighing in 86 fish for 45k 197gms. Species were Pout, Dogfish, Pollack, Smoothound & Undulate Ray with the best fish being a New Club Record Undulate ray of 6k 719gms caught by Kevin Dunham. The fish was measured and returned to the water with the weight off the Club's Ray Chart. This was Kevin's 2nd Record in 2 weeks as he broke the Shore Thornback Ray Record with a fish of 5k 386gms from Lee On Solent.

Phil Morgan has a very good day. On Sunday 21st May Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shallow Boat competition which was kindly organised by Brian Ansell.

One of our Committee members David Middleton wants us to arrange a Junior Teaching & Fishing session next year and has got the agreement of Callum & Dave Graham to come along to instruct the juniors but the rest of the Committee are lost about what you need to do when organising these sessions. We wonder if you could come to a committee meeting to give them some guidance on this as you have had Junior get together's in the past. We meet on the 1st Friday of each month at the Festival Hall, Merryoak Road, Merryoak, Southampton starting around 19.50. Our next 3 meetings are Fri June 2nd ,Fri Jul 7th & Fri 4th Aug, if you could make it it would be greatly appreciated. Our next match is a Shallow Boats comp on Sunday 14th June

3rd round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2107, Sun 14.5.17, Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool. (33 rods). Otterspool Promenade was on challenging form on a bright and breezy day with an algal bloom in the water. Codling and whiting made up the majority of the catches with a few dogfish while eels and flounders, once the staple of this part of the Mersey estuary, proved elusive (as did all species on some pegs!). Crab was the essential bait. Former Team Wales member, Wayne McGilloway made a perfect comeback after an absence of five years, taking the win from Zone B with a bag of nine fish for a length conversion score of 280 pts. Eastham's Andy Hopkinson won Zone A with seven codling for 252 points for runner- up place. Solid performances by the series leaders, Heather Lindfield and Emily Garrett, mean that they retain their positions but the championship scores are tightening. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. Wayne McGilloway (Greenfield), 5 codling, 3 whiting, 1 dogfish, 280 pts. (Zone B). 2. Andy Hopkinson (Eastham), 7 codling, 252 (Zone A). 3. LDSFC A testing night at Magazine Lane, the first venue of the 2017 Junior Summer league for the Lymington Juniors. A very strong easterly wind made the going tough but the fish were obliging and the juniors were soon catching. Within half an hour all the anglers had fish recorded on their match cards. Pout and Whiting were the most common species on the night, with Riley Price showing the way with double and treble shots from the off. Flora Munden was the first to add a different species, with a good Dogfish of 53cm, weighing in at 1lb 4oz. Leo Chamberlain added a Smoothound of 40cm to the species tally shortly afterwards to break the constant cycle of Pout and Whiting. The three Solo anglers, Riley Price, Bradley Mapstone and Owen Strange were enjoying great sport by the midway point in the match, Riley was leading the way but Bradley and Owen were hot on his heels and swopped second and third positions between themselves with each fish landed. Amongst the assisted anglers everything was fairly even but a great late run of fish including a Dogfish of 55cm and an Eel of 49cm pushed Robert Savin ahead of the pack leaving his brother Ollie and Leo Chamberlain to battle over second spot. Flora Munden’s early run of fish had slowed up allowing her brother Max to creep ahead with a steady run of good sized Pout late in the match. David Graham.

In photo From left to right: John Hunt (Treasurer), Mrs Sadie Miles (Chairman Bridport Branch RNLI), Rod Barr (Chairman). For many years our club has held a fishing match to raise funds for the RNLI, but unfortunately in 2016 we had to postpone the match, so it was decided to run a Christmas raffle to raise funds for the RNLI in 2016. We raised the sum of £121 which we presented at our meeting on the 2nd May 2017.
