THAMES ESTUAURY

by Lee Bolingbroke Great weather great fishing but the football is getting in the way of some anglers booking trips, yes I know there is always something, we are never happy us charter skippers, weathers our normal gripe, any way I got off the plane from Portugal for a nice break with my family and have been out on charter ever since and I am knackered. The fishing has been terrific with a great run of tope coming through, and we have not had to go far to go to catch them so anglers have not had to pay for long distant trips, getting the mackerel to fish for them though is as always tiresome so we are recommending anglers to buy them from Morison’s they always seem to have the freshest on the high street. The biggest fish was a tope caught by Derick Mole on his boat Eastern Promise a nice fifty seven pound fish however most of the fish have been twenty’s to forty pounds but great sport. Smooth hounds now being caught & once

again these fish are running in places we rarely see them and this has taken us all buy surprise, it is probably to do with food as we have been setting crab pots in our normal areas were most years we would top up but we are struggling to catch half a dozen hermits per setting and this does not keep anglers happy but what can we do! We have put this shortage of crab down to the yes you got it the beast from the east which probably killed hundreds of crabs and these stocks may need two or three years to recover. I have just had the pleasure of taking out two of our national treasures on my charter boat Sophie Lea Michael Buerk and John Sergeant apparently they are making a tv program of their adventures on boats as they sail around the uk to Falmouth and this will be broadcasted on channel five towards the end of the year, not great anglers but fantastic fun to be with and I wish them success on their adventure.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy With Summer having now officially commenced, there has been a marked improvement in the quality of captures being recorded although its’ fair to say that most of these are occurring outside of the local area. Smoothhounds can often be relied upon to provide a good days sport and whilst the rock marks around Torbay (such as Hopes Nose) are now starting to provide multiple captures, if you are after a really big hound you either have to go to North Devon or the Bristol Channel low water reefs. Matt Parry from South West Sea Baits decided to take a trip up to the channel along with his son Logan to target hounds and he was rewarded with a cracking smoothie of 16-2 which is a new PB whilst young Logan landed a PB bass of 4-4. Top fishing lads and a good first fish in the South West Sea Baits 2 Species Comp. Not to be outdone, Mark Ash of Pot Black SAC also had a trip up to the reefs and landed 2 hounds of 15-1 and 16-2. Nice one Ashy. Peeler crab is by far the best bait for hounds although whole squid will take larger fish. If fishing the reefs make sure you use rotton bottom set-ups as some marks can be very snaggy and constantly setting-up is no fun. Any of the reefs between Watchet and Hinkley Point will produce hounds but they can be very frustrating as they can be there one day and gone the next.

As well as the hounds some good small eyed rays are also showing in the Minehead area. Kurt Ireland and Lloyd Carty of Rodbenders SAC decided on a late-night trip and each were rewarded with several 10lb+ small eyeds in amongst the hoardes of doggies. Ben Jones of Pot Black SAC also had a very good session on the SE rays at Chesil Beach, landing a number of fish up to 10-5. With the on-set of warmer weather there has been an increase in the number of mullet showing in the estuaries and I have heard of good captures of fish up to 4lb from the River Plym whilst gilts are now showing from Kingsbridge on the midrange tides. Best baits are either lugworm or peeler crab. Further to the west some good gilt fishing is also taking place in the Helford Estuary.

SIZE MATTERS

On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 has been finding some good pollack on the local reefs along with cod which are now starting to show in greater numbers. On Size Matters Kev tells me of some great fishing on the offshore wrecks with conger to 72lb, cod to 21lb, ling to 28lb and pollack to 16lb along with an unusual john dory of 6lb. One thing that has been a problem for those fishing at anchor is the lack of mackerel which seems to be a major issue throughout the entire south coast and is a real concern. Hoping that they make a show very shortly.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers Summer is finally here and Its great to see various species of gurnard making an appearance along the beach as well as the odd tope, nothing huge but all positive signs that things are starting to improve along chesil beach. Unfortunately the may weed/rot still seems to be quite thick in places making fishing unbearable at times for some anglers but it shouldn’t take long now for the bloom to start dying off making fishing a lot more productive and rewarding. The mackerel are still very hit and miss at the moment with only a few reports of anglers catching, but after spending the day on Amarisa a charter boat from Weymouth it didn’t take long before we were bringing full strings of mackerel on deck with the majority of the fish all coming from the western side of Portland. It seems the may rot could be the reason why the mackerel are not pushing closer to shore….

The general fishing is still proving to be quite difficult in places but some anglers have managed some decent fish with Till hall landing a small tope first cast and some nice plaice and Ben Stockley also catching a tope along with grey and red gurnard. There also seems to be some nice ray coming out with Ben Jones landing 7 small eyed ray with two of the fish weighing over 10lb. Chesil beach has to be one of the most recognised venues in the UK for producing those random and unexpected catches, as year after year a few anglers are rewarded with a special fish. This time round Scott Booty managed to land something you don’t see everyday while casting a jig from the shore, an angler fish. To catch such a fish from the shore is an outstanding achievement and especially when it fell to a casting jig!

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Fishing aboard Piscary a fish of a lifetime was caught by Paul Filer a Bass of 16lb 8ozs and followed that up by an Undulate Ray of 15lb 2ozs. Matt has certainly been finding some good fish which included a new boat species caught whilst fishing for Tope a Coalfish of 8lb. Lucy Barrett fishing in the Christchurch Angling Centre species league landed her 1st Starry Smoothhound, Lucy has a thing for dogfish and gives everyone she catches a loving cuddle before returning them. Poole Dolphins had a good days fishing for Bream with Danny Williamson winning the comp and landing a Bream of 2lb 12ozs. At last after tears of trying to break the 20lb Cod barrier Ian Napier landed a cracking 21lb Cod whilst wreck fishing along with several good Pollack. It appears to be improving offshore and with the arrival of Mackeral there are plenty of Tope to fish for at anchor. Graeme Clark landed a new mini species aboard Mistress Linda a Worm Pipefish, not to be out done the skipper landed a Shore Clingfish which was bought back

ashore for identification and released. Another rare species spotted by anglers on Mistress Linda and Random Harvest was a sunfish on Poole Patch enjoying the sunshine. The Poole Species Comp was won by local anglers Lymington Raiders, all our thanks go to Sarah Medley for all the hard work she puts in to make this comp a success. The date for next year is Friday June 7th 2019. Marine Conservation Zone consultations are ongoing and could threaten angling with the possibility of ‘no fishing’ zones being introduced between April and August which will severely restrict all angling including our favourite Bream. Visit the DEFRA site and put your point of view as numbers matter, I personally would welcome a managed fishery where we can fish and if that means self regulated bag limits to keep the status quo then good, You have until mid July to act so please stand up and be counted. SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming The last month has been flat out down in Poole, we have only had to cancel one trip due to weather which certainly makes a change from last year’s May-June. The May bloom is pretty much gone now both inshore and out in the Channel, this brought on the arrival of the first shoals of mackerel. With the fresh bait available tope fishing has started strongly for the year with plenty of male fish over the slack water period coming from various marks. We have even seen tope to over 20lb coming whilst ray fishing right in Poole Bay only a couple of miles from the shore so should be a good season for them. The bream fishing continues to be frantic, it doesn’t seem like there are many marks where you

don’t get at least a few of them these days. We have also had a new species this month for us, a rare occasion these days, well done to Kelvin Hindmarch for his 1lb 2oz streaked gurnard. Apparently this equals the current British Record. Further afield in the channel fishing is plodding along nicely with mostly cod on the wrecks with the Pollock having moved further off to the rough ground marks. Friday this week will see our first trip over to Cherbourg for the season. Next year we will be running our first trips down to Guernsey to change things up a bit, get in touch for more details and the dates. Thanks to everyone for fishing with us on Silver Spray and out of Poole over the last month.

NWASAC Match Report: 5th round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship, George Crane Memorial Match, Sun June 10th 2018, Rock Channel, New Brighton (24 rods) Over low water at the Rock Channel just outside the mouth of the Mersey, hot, calm conditions with an algal bloom slowed sport on many pegs but some better fish showed as the tide turned and a brisk onshore wind enlivened the sea. Catches consisted of flatfish, school bass and small gurnards to crab baits. There were fewer dabs and plaice than expected and the smoothhounds failed to show. John Waugh was on his home turf and his length to points score of 442 from Zone B proved unbeatable. In Zone A, Bill Lindfield did not have a fish for three hours but caught on the flood to take the zone and runner-up place while Roy Tapper was not only third but took both fish pools. In the championship, John Waugh’s win moved him into second and Daniel Parker scored enough points with a single flounder to retain his series lead at this halfway stage. Results (Scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 6 flounders, 4 bass, 2 dabs, 442 points. (Zone B) 2. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 4 flounders, 1 bass, 1 plaice, 1 dab, 275 (Zone A) 3. Roy Tapper (Cardiff), 6 flounders, 5 bass, 1 dab, 395 (Zone B) 4. Joe Arch (Llanishen), 3 dabs, 2 bass, 144 (Zone A) 5. ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, July 2018

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas The end of May saw plenty of good-sized smoothound caught from both boat and shore marks. The biggest was a new shore record for Bideford Angling Club and scaled 21lb falling to the rod of Rob Harris who was fishing alone resulting in low quality pictures that do not do the huge fish justice. Packs of tope have been providing excellent sport for boat anglers off Ilfracombe and in Bideford Bay with fish averaging just over 20lb. A couple of bigger fish have shown including a beauty of 52lb to Justine Goodhine fishing on Reel Deal off Ilfracombe. Kevin Pike boated a fine tope of 47lb 8oz in a solo effort fishing from his own private boat. Pollock, codling, bass and mackerel have also given sport to anglers using lures from both boat and shore. Several anglers have enjoyed success with bass from the shore using both hard and soft plastic lures. In the estuary thin lipped grey mullet enthusiasts have been using baited

spinners to tempt good numbers of these hard fighting fish to over 4lb. Thick lipped mullet are also present and have been tempted from both the estuary and open coast marks.

Dennis Toleman - thin lipped grey mullet 3lb 4oz

Ian Laird - thin lipped mullet 3lb 6oz

John Shapland thin lipped grey mullet 4lb 0.5oz

As summer continues bass sport should improve with big fish baits likely to tempt the occasional double figure specimen. These solitary bass can turn up just about anywhere along the coast. The annual spider moult is undoubtedly imminent and will bring an upsurge in smoothound and bass catches. Several wrasse have been landed in the Ilfracombe area with fish to over five pound a distinct possibility if anglers make the effort to target these hard fighting fish that dwell in rock and kelp strewn gullies.

LRF enthusiasts can enjoy success at llfracombe Pier where several rare species where tempted last year. Tiny hooks baited segments of natural or artificial ragworm often prove effective.

SPECIALISING IN LIVE SANDEELS

Nigel Wyatt contacted me recently after a recommendation from one of his club members from the Honiton sea angling club . Nigel was keen to fish the channel to target Smoothounds. With nearly a 2 hours drive to the Minehead area and Nigel having limited time to fish during a working week he wants to get the best out of this limited time. With a afternoon come evening booked on a favourable tide it was just down to the conditions. The day came and the conditions couldn’t of been any better. Warm, sunny and calm conditions as we hoped for. As we got to the beach it was amazing and a relief to see just one other angler a few hundred meters away from where we set up. Having a good old chin wag while we walked to the beach. Nigel mentioned he was fairly new to shore fishing and was still unsure on a few things. He also mentioned the only other Smoothound he has caught before was a small pup, so was hoping to upgrade his personal best with something better. It wasn’t long before he had a bait in the

water after a quick explanation on rigs and baiting up effectively with fresh crab. Occasionally I get a bit nervous regarding my anglers expectations, but not so today as everything looked perfect. What happen next exceeded all of Nigel’s expectations and even surpassed my own on the grounds of how quick it all happened. Not only did Nigel accomplish what he came to do on his first cast within 5 minutes of the bait hitting the sea bed, but he followed this up by smashing his personal best 4 times in 4 cast topped with a cracking 11lb 9oz Smoothound that gave a fantastic account of itself. I could see he was savouring every moment of it in some sort of disbelief of what was happening Nigel also topped the session off with another couple of hounds to cap off a cracking session. Many thanks to Nigel for using my guiding service and thanks to the Honiton sac club member for the recommendation, it was a real pleasure to guide one of your members and I’m sure he’s in good hands in your club for the future.

LANGSTONE

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club If May is a good month for boat fishing in the Eastern Solent, June is even better. We are having an exceptionally good season for tope, with more fish caught and in larger sizes than recent years. They have arrived ahead of the mackerel this year, but the lack of fresh fish baits hasn’t put them off with many being taken on frozen mackerel. Deeper gullies south of Pullar and Utopia were the places to be. One of the best fish reported was a 51lb specimen for Chris Martin fishing from Moonshine; Leigh Coward with 46lb; Dave Jordison 40lb and Steve Holt 35lb from his boat Castaway II. Heber Crawford made his tope trip a family affair with good fish landed by Heber, Heber Jr. and Archie Crawford on their boat Orca. There were reasonable numbers of bream caught over the usual rocky marks through May and early June, although the larger breeding fish will have moved on by now leaving hoards of bait-robbing mini-bream. There are still plenty of smoothhound being caught although they didn’t have such a high profile in the catch reports because they were overshadowed by the excitement over the tope catches. The first mackerel have arrived following the garfish and scad. This means plenty of fresh bait at last, and some left over for the barbie. Because their food early in the season are very small fry, it pays to match the food size with smaller feathers moving to larger sizes as the season progresses. Sometimes you see shoals on the fishfinder but can’t connect – these could be herring. They prefer static bait so small Sabiki lures held still in the water can catch them in good numbers. On other occasions the shoals under the seabirds are bass,

Archie Crawford tope

as John Leythorne of the SMDAC found with an impressive string – all returned of course. Southsea Marina Angling Club have had a Bass Cup for many years but with the ban on keeping bass, and the stipulation that any bass caught must be returned immediately, weighing fish for the competition is impractical. Instead the competition running for the remainder of the year will be based on length. Tim Andrews is already in the lead with a fish of 68cm. All fish are photographed against a standard fish rule supplied to club members.

Heber Crawford Tidal Carp

Jake Kelly Small Eyed Ray

Further offshore over reefs and wrecks there have been good catches of pollack, although boats have had to search a number of unproductive marks before finding the wreck with all the action. If conditions allow, light tackle gives some amazing sport as Mark Banks demonstrated with a 13lb fish caught on a spinning rod. Bass have been so numerous on some wrecks that it is hard to reach the pollack! SMAC has an active Junior section and we are always pleased to see such big smiles on young faces. Jake Kelly is in the lead for both the Junior Species and Junior Cup competitions and is pictured here with a small-eyed ray. So he doesn’t get in trouble with his mother, apparently his lifejacket was only removed for the duration of the photo!

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby The last month has seen an increase in activity with some super weather and boats have taken advantage clocking up some miles steaming as far down as Foreland Point. The hounds have turned up in the bay now and numbers will increase as we move into summer. The bass are still showing but not many are targeting them due to the ridiculous ban we are under. May 20th and 5 boats launched in perfect conditions with all steaming down channel to fish the clearer waters off Porlock and beyond. Fishing was excellent with dogs, thornies, eels, huss, hounds, bass, tope and a gurnard. There were a number of double figure huss with the biggest a new club record of 12lb 6oz for Nigel Devey on Ultra White and Aaron Devey also had a bass of 7lb. May 27th 3 boats with 7 anglers fished the Wilf Dunstone Celebration Bowl in a brisk NE wind restricting our options a little. The fishing was very busy although most of the fish were under our mls and the hounds were absent until the last minutes of the match when a couple turned up. All our hounds are measured at sea and returned alive using a formula we have devised to give their weight. Winner on the day was Nigel Devey with a hound of 13-14 and 90%, second was Anthony Georgiou with a lsd of 2-11/2 and 70% and third was Andy Georgiou with a hound of 10-5 and 66% June 3rd and Four Buoys and Seanies Flyer took advantage of a good forecast and again steamed down channel fishing marks from Porlock down to Forland Point. The weather was fantastic with mirror seas and sun all day and the fishing was just as hot. It's nice to fish in clear water every now and then and catch a few different species like tope and huss. We do get the odd huss in our local waters but nothing like

Nigel Devey huss

the numbers we have experienced around Porlock and apart from the odd Watchet tope this is another species we have to travel to find. Tope to upper twenties were landed with Stephen Saxby leading the way with one of 28.5lb on Four Buoys. Lots of hounds and huss into double figures, codling, bass and the usual suspects gave 8 species caught. On June 9th we held our first junior comp of the year, a short one over high water. These are open to any child as long as they are fishing on a club boat. The wind on the day was a bit fresher than forecast and restricted where we went but the 5 kids on 4 boats stuck to the task admirably. The format was single biggest fish with the emphasis on fun so fish were weighed on board and released at sea. Judging by the smiles on all their faces when the boats returned the event was a success and the hot dogs went down at treat back at the clubhouse. Winner on the day with a fine hound of 13lb was 6 year old Brody McLaughlin, 2nd place was Charlie Willis with a conger of 10-8 and 3rd Ava Saxby with a hound of 10-4. Fish of the month for May sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a huss of 12-6 and 99%. The next club competition is an away day comp at West Bay on the 29th July. Saturday 7th July we have a bbq at the sailing club with live music, good food and possibly some alcohol. The next club meeting is on Thursday 19th July at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Yet again, Minehead charter boats returning great catches. Smoothounds still hot on the press with many fish well into double figures smashing into crab baits, and I have to say, hardback is ruling the roost as the number one bait to have! Though peelers will take good fish, the price on their heads of well over a pound each, in my opinion, makes them yesteryears bait. Squid has also been taking good numbers of hounds. Interestingly, different grounds have been producing hounds to different baits. Rough areas seem to require the crab baits, while smoother ground will attract hounds to squid. Bull huss still featuring in all charters. These fish have been fantastic over the

past few years filling in while waiting for other species to turn up. Offshore grounds now showing good tope though some days they are difficult to locate. With recent neap tides clearing the water, pollack have started to show in good numbers. Inshore reefs and wrecks producing fish to double figures and in good numbers. Bream as always, a bit elusive but good fun to target on an inshore species day. Ballan and cuckoo wrasse always willing to add to the list with ragworm proving a favourite for these fellows. Mackerel still sparse but I would bet they will show in good shoals within the next couple of weeks. Dave R

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler Firstly apologies for my missing report last month for some unknown reason it wasn’t received at HQ and at present it’s still swimming about in internet space somewhere.

to find his target species and a superb specimen Smoothound of 19lb2oz recently. Hopefully we will see a few hounds of this stamp in the month ahead.

What a cracking month we’ve had here in the Bristol Channel and it continues as I right up this months report. A good few of you, I’m sure think I’m a bit biased towards the Minehead area as this is where I’m based. In reality though the fishing is and has been fantastic in this area recently. We have been spoilt with some awesome small eyed ray ,spotted ray and Thornback ray fishing. Not to mention the crazy numbers of 6-9lb Smoothounds and a few bass and Huss chucked in for good measure.

Dover Sole are a worthwhile target fish especially in the upper channel around Portishead, Clevedon and again at Minehead.

It’s not all about Minehead though as there’s wide and varied options and fantastic prospects up and down the channel and on both sides of it. Where as the Minehead area has been producing lots of smaller smooth hounds. The reef marks between Blue anchor and Hinckley have produced a few bigger better quality hounds that are in small pockets here and there, but generally it’s been slow going on the reefs , but when it’s on fire action can be explosive!. Further up the channel around Weston there’s been a few proper hounds in the 14-19lb bracket. Portishead Charter boat skipper and top shore angler Chris Buxton took a day out on the shore

The bass fishing is shaping up nicely with increasing numbers of 3-4lbers and there’s a few decent fish pushing double figures fish to be had. Something I mention every year at this time, is the safe handling of the Smoothounds. Absolutely nobody wants to see one of these sporting fish being hung up on the hook of a set of scales. This not only looks barbaric but it can causes serious damage to them and results in many dead hounds being washed up dead every year. A cheap weighing sling from any good Tackle shop is all you need, they take up no spaces in a tackle box or ruck sack . If you are tight git or simply can’t afford one. Pop into any supermarket and buy one of their 50p heavy duty woven Recycling shopping bags. Anyway on that note. I wish you all a great month ahead, it promises to be a cracking month again with big Smoothounds, specimen bass and rays just for starters. Tightlines and happy hunting

WEYMOUTH

Port Report Last year Weymouth Angling Centre stared a competition called the Weymouth Charter Boat Specimen Hunt. Anglers can enter using forms issued on the boat they are on or at the Weymouth Angling Centre. The event was a success and this year it has continued with some very impressive fish being entered.

rotating according to fish being caught etc. After three ‘drop backs’ the gear needed to be brought back to the surface, the angler join the ‘queue’ at the back and then started again. With today’s fluorocarbon lines and the massively improved braids, this could well be a very worthwhile option to try if the usual drifting wasn’t working.

The latest entry is a new Port Record bull huss caught by Alfred Brochwell from the Isle of Sheppey fishing from Adrian Brown’s Al Spirit. The existing port record stood at 15lb 12oz with Alfred’s superb huss weighing in at a massive 16lb 7oz which gives a chance of him winning up to £1,500. This amount has been put aside for any port records broken and so far, as Alfred is the only entry so far for this section, he could take the lot!

There have been a few cod caught on the wrecks and also some very good pollack. When the wrecks ‘fill up’ with cod (remember 2015 and to a certain extent 2016?) the pollack seem to move off but when there are less cod about then the bigger pollack seem to remain. There’s also been a number of double figure coalfish reported this month which is unusual for this particular sea area with this species being more likely from ports further west.

After official weighing in, skipper Adrian Brown took the huss back out to sea and released it.

Like last year, the inshore fishing has been very good for tope, smooth hounds, spurdog and rays with undulates and blonde rays featuring on the increasingly popular ‘big fish’ days. There’s also been a fair few bream caught from the Northern Shore marks to the east of Weymouth with signs that the bream are already moving westwards to the Portland marks.

It’s not easy to break a port record…here’s a sample of some of them to give an idea of the standard required. Ballan wrasse, 8lb 6oz; bass, 18lb 6oz; black bream, 6lb 4oz; conger, 103lb; ling, 44lb; plaice, 8lb 1oz; blonde ray, 35lb 11oz; tope, 71lb 4oz; turbot 30lb. The undulate ray port record of 22lb 13oz caught by Richard Ferre last year is the current British record and the spurdog port record of 24lb 8oz caught by Jonathan Rollason is very close to the existing British record of 25lb 4oz. Both these fish were caught from Meercat owned by Lyle Stantiford and skippered by Ryan Casey. However…there are prizes for the best specimen in each of the listed species….so you don’t have to beat an existing record to be a winner!!! Unable to survive without being at sea, I am currently skippering a dive boat. The divers tell me that the sea visibility to the south and west of Portland is the best they have ever experienced. When dropping down to wrecks in the 50 metre depth range, they are able to see the shipwreck when up to 20 metres above it. By all accounts this is unheard of. The videos of the wrecks I am shown are crystal clear, as if they were being filmed above water…it’s that good! And, from the angler’s interest, there are loads of big pollack and cod showing on them including some massive conger. Fishing has been very erratic during June so far. It may well be because the water is gin clear. We tried a little experiment on a recent dive outing and I bounced a lead down a wreck and this was filmed. As my 10oz lead (no lure attached) worked its way along the wreck towards the camera, the cod ‘shoal’ simply opened out and allowed the lead to bounce through and then they slowly regrouped behind it. Is this what is happening down there? Many years ago we did experience similar levels of clarity in the Weymouth/Portland sea area and it was indeed very difficult to catch anything. Back then ‘our’ wrecks were consistently netted and the wreck netters were telling me they were catching very little as they believed the fish could easily see the nets and just swim round them. In order to catch anything in these conditions, we used to ‘stem’ the wreck. This meant anchoring well away from the wreck (50 metres or so uptide) and then dropping 10oz or 12oz leads back in the tide towards the wreck. We used to lengthen out traces up to 25 foot sometimes and use 30lb mono as retrieving a good fish against the tide required stronger trace line. This in itself created another problem as the thicker the trace line was, the more easily it could be seen. After a few fish were caught, the wreck would often go quiet and we would need to wait and allow the fish to regroup and then try again. approach to this topic but the reason why I do not have my name on the top of the report is that I firmly believe (really!!) that I am of no importance. What is important is that this is a PORT REPORT. It is about what is happening, collectively, here in sunny Weymouth and this report is to try and give you, our angling customers, a general idea of what you can realistically expect to catch. Weymouth is a great port. It is full of very enthusiastic and dedicated skippers. We are proud of our community spirit and sea-faring brotherhood. You, the angler, can be assured

that the local skippers are in communication with each other throughout the day and aim to help each other to try to find you some fish and enjoy a good day out. Long may that spirit of comradeship continue!! As ever, please allow me to thank you for coming to Weymouth and Portland and supporting the local charter fleet. Your custom is much appreciated and let’s hope for good weather and pleasantly productive days afloat.

Turbot and pollack - Duchess II

Turbot and brill have provided some memorable days on the Shambles Bank and there has been a smattering of plaice from various marks. We’re already into July as this is being read. We’ve been fortunate this year with more mackerel around and this has given a terrific boost to the inshore fishing for those species mentioned in the tow paragraphs above. The ‘big fish’ days will continue and it’s good to see how this is being embraced by an ever increasing number of anglers who are ‘fishing for sport’ rather than ‘the table’. Expect to target the various hounds, tope, rays, conger and huss over these summer months and be ready to scale down for the bream. The Shambles will continue to provide a few flatfish. These are valuable fish and are targeted by commercial and recreational anglers alike. Way back, in the late 60’s and early 70’s, the skipper I used to crew for would explain that to get one turbot each was a successful outing and to get more than one was exceptional. As anglers we must be ever optimistic but turbot (and brill) fishing is not a hectic and numerically productive type of fishing. It is for quality, not quantity and as such it is better to be realistic than disappointed!

The wreck fishing will continue to target the cod and there will be more reported this month along with some decent size pollack. Listen to your skipper….there may be slight changes to your traces that can make all the difference to your success rate. What works in one port may not work here, so be open minded to the suggestions of the skippers who are out there every day and genuinely want you to succeed. Fluro-carbon for traces will give you an edge and the actual length of the trace can be critical especially if the water clarity continues. The Channel Island trips are in full flow with many of the Weymouth charter boats making weekly crossings, mainly to Alderney, in search of the flatfish, tope and bream on offer there plus the opportunity to fish some of the distant wrecks that are out of reach on a normal day charter. I wish to express a big thank you to the many anglers who turned up at my ‘retirement’ party in Weymouth Angling Society HQ on June 9th. It was great to see so many friends with some of my customers dating right back to pre- Offshore Rebel days when I had Purbeck Star and Vanishing Trick. It was a great night and full of fun memories. Lastly, I have been asked a number of times recently who writes the Weymouth Port Report. Well..it’s me..Paul Whittall. I’ve been writing it ever since Sea Angling News started. The ‘Port Report’ writers all have their own different

DROP IN DROWNING DEATHS IS ENCOURAGING BUT MORE MUST BE DONE, SAYS WATER SAFETY SCOTLAND Latest figures show a small drop in the number of accidental drowning deaths in Scotland in 2017, but more needs to be done, according to Water Safety Scotland. Figures from the National Water Safety Forum show that in the country in 2017, there were 46 accidental fatalities – down from the average of 50 per year, which was the number of people who died in 2016. However, the number of suspected or confirmed suicides in water increased from 22 to 26. Water Safety Scotland (WSS) – an alliance of organisations including third sector, local authorities and emergency services – aims to reduce accidental drowning deaths in Scotland by half by 2026, and says more must be done to ensure this target can be met. Michael Avril, chairman of WSS, said: “Scotland carries a disproportionate burden in terms of accidental drowning deaths when compared to the rest of the UK, so we’re pleased to see the number has gone down. We’re cautiously optimistic that this indicates a step in the right direction, but all

stakeholders must now ensure that we are continuing, if not increasing, our efforts to drive this figure down even further. “We also must ensure that we are tackling water-related suicide, which we are sad to see has increased over the past year.” Men continue to be the most at-risk group by far (42 deaths in 2017, compared to just three for women), and particularly those aged 50-59 (seven), while recreational activities accounted for just over three out of every five deaths (63 per cent) – 13 people died while walking or running, the most common activity at the time of death. In terms of geography, the majority of deaths happened at the coast (54 per cent) compared to inland waters. On the 150g day they went out fighting hard and one of our team members Duane Lockwood broke the world record for the longest back cast ever with a staggering distance of 262.99m, to finish third in the 150g category. The next day Kevin Southey was able to cast the 125g to get his measure for the team and he fought till the end of that day, but we knew deep down that was the end of his competition, as he was in a lot of pain after injuring his knee on the practice day. I therefore made the decision after speaking with Kevin that I would replace him on the final day of the 100g. Some of our team members who stepped forward to cast for England had no experience of a World Championship, but they did not disappoint me, in fact they did themselves, the Angling Trust and their country proud. I was overwhelmed with the support every athlete from all nations gave and the well wishes for the future.” In honour of Dennis Retter, Team England’s Manager for many year’s exemplary international service and Terry Carroll from Zziplex, Team England wore black armbands at the opening ceremony in remembrance. Next year the 22nd FIPS-M World Championship Long Casting of Sea Weights will take place in South Africa as part of the World Games.

CELEBRITIES ENDORSE NATIONAL FISHING MONTH 2018 You may have wondered what National Fishing Month is all about. Or why every year during July and August, there is so much talk about angling? Two famous faces who know why fishing is one of the most popular sports and hobbies in the UK are author and TV presenter of River Monsters, Jeremy Wade, and TV presenter and keen angler, Nick Hancock. Jeremy commented: "The National Fishing Month (NFM) campaign is a great way for people to learn the angling basics and appreciate the outdoors. By introducing newcomers to the sport, you pass on a gift that stays with them throughout their lives." Best known for hosting BBC's They Think It's All Over and Room 101, Nick Hancock will be hosting the new-look Fishing Theatre at The Game Fair this summer where National Fishing Month will be launched. Nick said: "I am really looking forward to meeting and interviewing some amazing anglers in the new Fishing Theatre and seeing all that this historic event has to offer the country sports community." With over 250 events spread across the UK between 27th July and the 2nd September 2018, scheduled specifically to target the school summer holidays, there are plenty of spaces for families to book, get out on the bank and have a great day out together. It doesn't matter what age you start fishing. Children can take part on equal terms with their grandparents. You can fish alone, with friends and family or in an organised group for an hour or two or for a whole day - you have the freedom to choose. Angling is fun, all the family can take part and research shows that fishing can be good for you, providing outdoor exercise activity and mental wellness. The Angling Trades Association created NFM 26 years ago and financially

contributes to the running of the participation initiative. Over the last 26 years, members of the trade association have donated hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of tackle to organisers and coaches to help run the events and supplied loads of 'goodies' and prizes to be given away to the people taking part. This year's headline sponsors include manufacturers Daiwa, Pure Fishing and Leeda, with retailers Fishing Republic, Fosters of Birmingham and Angling Direct providing donations and logistical support. In support of the participation programmes to get more people fishing, the Environment Agency gives a percentage of the money raised from fishing licences back into these programmes like NFM. The Angling Trust supports NFM through its team of Regional Officers and its fishery, club and coaching membership, who are all encouraged to take part in and support local events. The Professional Anglers Association, Game Angling Instructors Association and Angling Cymru support angling coaches across the UK. They promote NFM by organising and supporting a large number of local events across England and Wales. Why not enjoy yourself this summer, get outdoors and get healthy? Take part in a National Fishing Month registered event and follow thousands of young people, parents, grandparents and friends who enjoy quality family time together at the waterside over the holiday period. Book your place at an event now at www. nationalfishingmonth.com. All children under the age of 16 can now enjoy a free fishing licence to fish in still waters, rivers and streams. Just visit www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/buy-afishing-licence National Fishing Month 2018 runs between 27th July and 2nd September.

26 Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com LDSFC Bait Supplied Boat Match League 2018Competition 2/6: Poole. The second round of the bait-supplied boat match league sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre was fished on the 12th of May 2018 from Poole aboard ‘Mistress Linda’ (skippered by Philip Higgins) and ‘Boney M’ (skippered by Louis Medley). For once the weatherman delivered an excellent forecast which enabled a variety of marks both within and outside Poole harbour to be fished. With both boats choosing to fish similar marks close by each other and the competitive spirit in full flow, the first mark to be fished was Poole Patch, a large rocky outcrop. Over the course of the next two hours a whole host of species were accumulating across the scoreboard including all of the six species of wrasse found in the UK (including some brightly coloured cuckoo wrasse falling to Paul Hollyoake), blennies, gobies, pout and bream. As the tide increased in strength a move (accompanied by dolphins) was made to fish a large bank a few miles offshore. Soon after arriving Arran Harmer managed two excellent small eyed rays whilst fishing uptide, whilst those fishing downtide managed dogfish, smoothound, gurnard and bream. As the tide started to fade both boats ventured West to another series of banks. This proved to be a good move for Boney M as Chris Rodgers managed to not only lure a fine brill, but also a splendid undulate ray for good measure, boosting his scorecard considerably to win the boat. Richard Day managed to bag a herring- a new and unexpected species for the league. Unable to add to the species already caught, Mistress Linda left Boney M and headed inside the harbour to drift several marks, including Brownsea Castle (resulting in several large ballan wrasse) and several areas around the harbour approach channel in search of plaice. However, weed made fishing difficult due to the immense tidal flow and a further move was made East onto a small patch of rock where the remaining hour of the match was spent. This enabled top rod on the day, Paul Hollyoake to expand on his already extensive lead and ultimately win the boat. Overall 363 were caught (and consisting of 21 species. LDSFC LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SEA FISHING CLUB RESULTS OF LARGE BOAT COMPETITION 27 May 2018 On a glorious Bank Holiday Sunday, with temperatures well into the twenties and a calm sea state, eight Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club members fished their May competition off the Needles, aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage. Three different marks were explored during the competition, all producing a mixed bag of species which included black bream, conger eel, dogfish, pout, thornback ray, scad and smoothhound. Club president Derek Smith had a near specimen pout; only just missing out on the useful extra points by just over half an ounce. Other notable fish were a black bream of 2lbs 9.6 ozs and a near specimen scad of 1lb 6.2ozs, both caught by Jane Hopkins. Roland Blomfield was rewarded with a very nice lobster. Results. 1st Malcolm Gerrish 71 points 2nd Arran Harmer 67 points 3rd Brian Dawkins 61 points (more fish) 4th Jane Hopkins 61 points 5th Alec Harmer 47 points 6th Roland Blomfield 38 points 7th Derek Smith 34 points 8th Anton Emblen 24 points.

It was held over the 9 / 10 June and five Cornish charter boats took part. Capriole (Dave Paddock) out of Penzance, Sea Watch (Nigel Hodge) out of Falmouth, Mystique (Wayne Row) out of Newquay, Emma Kate (Lee Wicks) and Lady Mary (Jim West) out of Padstow. In total 53 anglers fished over the two days and in pretty flat seas.

Shingle Bank League Competition 23rd May. On Wednesday evening 23rd May Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition in which 17 club members signed on. The weather on the night was a very light northeast wind with showers, which left a flat calm sea, but sadly a lot of weed. Fish caught on the evening were dogfish, pouting, smoothhound, undulate and thornback rays and black bream. A total of 17 fish were caught for a total weight of 28lbs 5.2oz. Only edible fish are retained other fish are weighed and then released. Best fish of the night was an undulate ray of 4lb 14oz caught by Danny Panks who also caught the 2nd best fish of the evening a black bream of 1lb 14,6oz. Results: 1st Danny Panks 2 fish for 6lb 12.6oz 2nd Chris Ellis 3 fish for 5lb 5oz 3rd Keith Panks 2 fish for 4lb 1oz, 4th Paul Watson 2 fish for 2lb 9.8oz 5th Paul Dibden 2 fish for 2lb 7.2oz 6th Roland Blomfield 2 fish for 2lb 4.6oz, 7th Ben Daniel 1fish for 1lb 6.2oz 8th Steve Pitman 1 fish for 1lb 4oz 9th Pete Chamberlain 1 fish for 1lb 2.8oz, 10th John Sloper 1 fish for 1lb.

The competition was points based with individual species valued from 2 to 18 points and a maximum of five of each of the qualifying species would count. Amongst the fish caught were Poor Cod, Pouting, Haddock, Tope, Dogfish, Bull Huss, Ling, Pollock, Cuckoo Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse, Whiting, Mackerel (only 3 that I'm aware of over the two days !) Grey Gurnard, Red Gurnard, Greater Weaver (John Carhart 18 points) and a Megrim (18 points) for the competition winner Ed Schliffke. The points gained by anglers were kept very low key and emailed at the end of each day by the skippers to Bob Shotter who worked out the results and kept them very private and confidential until the presentation evening on the 12th June which was held at the London Inn, Summercourt which is a pretty central point in Cornwall for the competitors and skippers to travel to. A good evening was had by all and a fantastic buffet supper was provided. It was also interesting that the skippers from different ports had never met and they became heavily engaged in conversation.
