MIXED REACTION FROM ANGLERS AS ENVIRONMENT AGENCY ANNOUNCES NEW RULES FOR SALMON AND SEA TROUT FISHING grounds in the Arctic. With effect from 2019, the T&J beach nets are also to be closed for salmon fishing and have a much reduced sea trout catch, saving a further 8,000 salmon returning to rivers on the North East coast of Britain. Estuary nets in the South West of England will also close next year. Closure of unsustainable net fisheries was a key part of the Angling Trust’s Save Our Salmon campaign, launched two years ago.

Sea Angling News, March 2018
The Environment Agency’s announcement of measures to regulate salmon and sea trout angling and commercial netting in England has met with a mixed response from the nearly 30,000 anglers who buy a migratory fish rod licence each year. The new measures will be in place for 10 years, with a review in 5 years’ time, subject to the outcome of a formal fourweek consultation to be announced at the end of February. Objections submitted to this consultation will be responded to individually and then the Minister will make a final decision in April or May, taking into account any objections which are not withdrawn. Anglers are celebrating the Agency’s stated intention to close the drift net fishery off the North East coast of England with effect from 2018, which will save over 15,000 salmon and sea trout from a large number of English and Scottish rivers. Drift nets will also close in the Lune and Ribble this year, saving 300 fish returning to these rivers. These so-called ‘mixed-stock’ fisheries have been an embarrassment for many years and their existence has hindered international efforts to control the exploitation of salmon in their feeding
On most rivers in the country, the Environment Agency has accepted the Angling Trust’s argument that it should adopt a voluntary rather than mandatory approach to achieving catch and release targets. In 2016, the government announced that it intended to impose 100% mandatory catch and release on anglers throughout the country, and the Angling Trust welcomes the fact that the Environment Agency has listened to the case for self-regulation by angling clubs and fisheries. Anglers will need to ensure that these targets are met and that they submit catch returns to avoid mandatory measures being introduced in future years. However, on rivers predicted to be ‘At Risk’ of failing to meet their conservation targets in 2020, the Agency has insisted that anglers must put every salmon back with effect from 2018 or face prosecution, after fisheries conservation charities called for mandatory controls on rod fisheries not only on ‘At Risk’, but also on ‘Probably At Risk’ rivers. This has led to strong objections from many anglers in the North West of England, in particular, who do not accept the accuracy of the official assessment of stocks in their rivers and would like a more flexible voluntary approach to catch and release.
The Angling Trust has arranged a meeting on 26th January with representatives of rivers in the North West and the Environment Agency to discuss their concerns. Many of the proposed new rules governing the type of tackle that can be used by anglers will instead be included in a voluntary code of good practice after the Angling Trust and many anglers resisted the imposition of new by-laws in this area Regulation of exploitation by nets and rods was just one part of a Five Point Approach to restoring salmon stocks that was announced by the Environment Agency two years ago. The Angling Trust and Fish Legal have campaigned vigorously – and threatened legal action – to try and force the government to take urgent action on the other four points. In particular, it wants to see action to stop pollution from sewers and farms and action to tackle unsustainable predation by cormorants and goosanders. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust and Fish Legal said: “We are delighted to have won this important campaign to save more than 20,000 salmon from being killed in nets every year and to have protected many anglers from draconian regulations. However, we now need to see urgent action to tackle the root causes of declining stocks which are water quality, predation, poor marine survival and degraded habitats. We will also support our members calling for an independent review of the classification system to ensure that it provides the most accurate assessment possible of salmon stocks that has the confidence of rod and net fisheries alike.”

When the Mora Clipper turned up at the SAN headquarters I thought what better way to review it than just throw it into the tackle box, use it when required and check the general condition of it after a few months of contact with fish, bait, line and salt water. Well it’s safe to say that after this period there isn’t a spot of rust on it and it’s still as sharp as when it was removed from its original packaging. To say this knife is sharp is a serious understatement. With a blade length of 104mm and a thickness of 2.3mm you will struggle to find anything that
it can’t cope with while you’re out wetting a line. It has lovely rubber black grip which makes using this piece of kit a lot safer than other models available and comes complete with a hard, thick sheath that will protect the blade all day long and also stop you cutting your leg off. With a very modest RRP of £12.96 it’s very affordable and a must for any angler who is in the market for a new knife. For further details visit www.springfields.co.uk.

PLYMOUTH
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
February is traditionally one of the poorest months of the year fishing from the shore around the Plymouth and South Devon area as sea temperatures are at their lowest and it generally being the period where winter species have already departed and the spring/summer species are yet to arrive. Personally, I find it a real challenge to get motivated this time of year and find a better use of time servicing/re-lining reels, tying traces etc. However, for those who have put in the effort, some cracking fish have been found.
he does best and finding specimen sized fish, with his latest capture from Beesands being a stunning spotted ray of 5-14 which was just 2oz off his PB and was returned after weighing. Having visited Beesands several times over the past few weeks it’s definitely a case of ‘hours equals rewards’. Many of the whiting that were there last month have now thinned-out giving your baits a better chance of being found by a ray if they are out there. The low water period seems favourite using any type of fish bait or frozen sandeels.
One such angler is Paul ‘Bassman’ Gordon. Under the guidance of Gandalf himself (aka Martin Larkins) Paul has been putting in plenty of trips down the River Tamar for a big eel this winter and after many biteless hours he came up trumps this week with a cracking shore-caught conger of 30-2 which fell to a large cuttle bait cast out from Mutton Cove. Paul did particularly well by not only getting the fish up from the snaggy ground but also landing it by himself. The fish was returned after weighing, none the worse for its’ ordeal. Well done mate and it maybe the case that the eels are now starting to feed harder in the river now as just a couple of evenings later Dan Bassett landed a new PB eel of 32-7 from the same area.
Fishing the last round of the Plymouth Shore League Pat Fulton of Castaways SAC landed a cracking huss of 16-6 which was the best fish of the round. I know Pat has put in a lot of trips down to Cornwall for a heavyweight huss so this fish which was also a new Castaways SAC club record.
Having taken a bit of a sabbatical over the past year, Carl McCormack is back to what
Well that’s it for me this month – good luck if you get out and happy dipping.
Paul Bassman Gordon Conger 30-2
Malc Jones has now got Sea Angler 2 back in the water and a break in the weather this weekend allowed him to get out onto the reefs with members from Seafarers SAC landing some good pollack, ling and cod. One of the stand-out boat caught fish over the past few weeks has to be a cracking coalfish of 23-13 caught on Crusader at an offshore wreck. It would be great to see these fish make a comeback.

CHESIL BEACH
CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand
DID SOMEONE SAY SPRING? We are all aware the fishing has been pretty hard across the UK, not just Chesil. I think I dont just speak for myself when I say since Christmas, the fishing has been woeful, to say the least. My report this month will concentrate on the positives rather than negative, so we will look forward to the month of March. I for one will be looking forward with excitement to the brighter season arriving. I've been lucky enough to have a few sessions east of the big beach for the early Plaice and the numbers have been good.
ENGLAND JUNIOR SHORE ANGLING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2018
the deeper spots, such as Abbotsbury and the middle areas generally being a better stamp of fish. This last month hasn't been prolific but a few harden anglers have been putting in the the effort So i am sorry this is not a massive report but that is February for you, on a personal note i did land my second double figured Cod of the season of a fish just over 11lb, so yet again, you never know what can turn up on the Dorset coastline.
As in previous year's the fish have been alot smaller than Chesil but after the last few months it's been great to target and land a few fish, hopefully we should be in for a bumper spring once the fish move into Chesil.
The Angling Trust has announced the dates for the 2018 England Talent Pathway Sea angling programme. Young anglers with the desire and potential to represent their country are being invited to join the coaching programme where they will learn about international tactics and techniques from current England international managers, coaches and anglers.
The Plaice will arrive this month mainly at West Bexington and Cogden areas as in as in previous years and its no secret that the Plaice and Sole prefer the shallower venues. Saying that, the magic of Chesil does often chuck up a few fish anywhere along

The programme has proved hugely popular and successful in recent years with many anglers progressing from the programme to Tronix Pro England Junior Shore World team. Graduates from the 2017 programme Tom Ryder, Ben Eggleton, Ben Cloke, Adam Molloy and Riley Price all represented England in the FIPS-M World Junior Shore Angling Championships in France and went on to secure a silver medal. Anglers will receive free tuition from some the best and most experienced and successful coaches and anglers in the country. The vastly experienced Chris Clark and David Graham head up the coaching team supported ably England manager Mark Hurcombe and England Youth anglers Callum Graham and Charlie Tudball. The programme is free to enter with tuition and bait provided free of charge. It is a requirement of the programme that anglers attend all of the sessions. Event 1: 21st & 22nd July 2018, Lymington Sea Angling Club
Event 2: 11th August, Milford Shingle, Milford on Sea Event 3: 2nd September, Pennington Sea Wall Event 4: 15th September, Southsea England World Team Manager David Graham said “The primary purpose of the programme is to help youngsters to become better anglers. Many will have the ambition to represent their country and win medals and we want to help them understand and learn about the skills and techniques required to compete at international level. Not every angler will go on to represent England but every one of the anglers on the programme will become a better angler as a result of taking part.” Places on the programme are limited to 15 anglers and entries will open on Monday 5th March 2018 and anglers are advised to submit their entry quickly to avoid missing out, if you are interested in participating then please contact Competitions Programme Officer Kirsty Marshall at Kirsty.marshall@anglingtrust.net to register your interest. Closing date for entries is Monday 2nd July 2018. Participants must be individual members of Angling Trust and membership is FREE for anyone under 18 years of age. POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins
The fishing from Poole has remained constant with a severe lack of Cod of which for the 1st time since I began chartering way back in the 80s I have not landed a Cod on the boat during the winter season not a statistic I am proud of but there has been plenty of Channel Whiting to be caught although these are now on the smaller side in amongst them are still some nice sized fish, the local banks have produced a lot of Undulates and Thornbacks but surprisingly few Small Eyeds. Local angler Conn Bratcher landed a superb Undulate weighing 18lb 6 ozs along with plenty of small Conger eels, remember when having your photo taken just check out who is stood behind you. The mild weather has bought an early arrival of Wrasse, Plaice, Gurnards which provided a local angling club with 11 different species during a club match including Garfish, Mackeral and 2 nice Brill. The local commercial fishermen have reported some early Bream in the nets along with plenty of good sized Gurnards and Plaice. Further off to sea when the weather coincides with the weaker tides the Spurdog fishing has been good supported by some decent Blonde Rays and mid-sized Conger eels. Those anglers
fishing the Harbour have found meagre results with a severe lack of fish in general, many anglers put this down to over fishing by the commercial sector which is untrue as Poole Harbour has fewer nets men than it has ever had and the Flounder fishing is in decline all along the south coast, one contributing factor to Poole Harbour that is known is the amount of predatory birds and seals operating within the Harbour. During the annual EFSA Flounder comp the day only produced 9 Flounders between 4 boats. Looking ahead I hope the wreck fishing improves on last year and the channel Cod come back. The date for the Poole Bream comp has yet to be set but the date of the popular Species hunt with contact details is below, if you are keen to enter but unsure of fishing methods feel free to contact either Lou Medly or myself. SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
Highlight of the month so far has been the arrival of the spur dogs in good numbers. Even on the bigger tides when we can only head offshore to target them a couple of hours either side of slack water the fishing has been full on. The best rig to use is a simple 5 foot flowing trace made of about 80lb mono and a 4/0 circle hook baited with mackerel, sandeel and/or squid. Biggest so far has gone 22lb 8oz but I’m hoping there will be bigger to come
in March. Inshore things are quietening down a touch with plenty of whiting left but mostly small fish and some rays dotted around on certain marks. Over the next week, weather permitting, we shall do our first wreck trips out in the Channel to target the big spring pollock. Alderney and Cherbourg trips are filling up fast so drop me an email at info@ silverspraycharters.com if you would like a list of remaining dates.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Langstone Area Report – Neville Merritt Well February has turned out pretty much as predicted, made worse by the constant procession of low pressure systems from the Atlantic that have brought strong winds and rain. February is also often a fairly barren month, with the cod having moved off and the Spring species yet to appear in any numbers. Many charter skippers use February for annual overhauls on the basis that they are not missing much, and this year they were dead right. Good pollack will be on the mid-Channel wrecks, if only we have the right weather to let us reach them. So, February news is on the light side. The Southsea Marina Angling Club Nelson Mandela Cup for best cod was fished very late in the season this year due to the run of bad weather. This meant a number of boats were unavailable, however seven members braved the elements to make sure we completed the calendar of events. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the timing, not a single cod was caught so the winner-takes-all prize went to Ray Plomer with a 2lb 2oz whiting. This was a great compensation for Ray, who missed out on last month’s Cod Open rankings by losing valuable fishing time returning for a forgotten flask and sandwiches.
2017, pictured here with cod and bull huss which helped him to achieve that. Next month we should sea the arrival of early plaice. There have been reports of some in nets already, but I have noticed over the years that fish ending up in nets don’t seem to be fish interested in baits. Maybe they are less interested in feeding when they are in early for spawning (which is why they are on the inshore marks) but just as susceptible to nets. After that we can look forward to bream, smooth-hound and the summer species. Bass will be catch and release only for 2018 unless the restriction is relaxed later in the year. I am certainly looking forward to some warmer, more settled weather too.
Colin Kidd and cod
Other SMAC club news was the cod pool being won by Steve Kelly (correctly spelled this month, sorry) with a cod of 17lb 1oz, and John Wearn in second place with a cod of 11lb 15oz. The RNLI will be invited to give a small boat safety talk to members at the May meeting. Eastney Cruising Association (ECA) are Southsea Marina’s near neighbours, based right on the entrance to Langstone Harbour. Congratulations to Colin Kidd who was awarded ECA Club Champion

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

NORTH DEVON REPORT
By Wayne Thomas
Shore anglers have been targeting spurdog from deep-water rock marks when conditions permit with some success. Cameron Atkinson took advantage of a break in the weather was rewarded with this potential British shore record spurdog of 18lb. Plenty of other double figure spurdog were also landed along with bull huss and conger. Combe Martin SAC member Kevin Legge landed the biggest conger reported a fine specimen of 28lb. Boat anglers enjoyed hectic sport off Ilfracombe aboard Bluefin skippered by John Barbeary. Plenty of spurdog are hunting the deep-water along with conger to almost forty pounds. Tragedy was averted on an isolated North Devon Rock mark when one of a party of three anglers managed to raise the alarm after being swept off his feet whilst crossing a gulley swept by a big swell as the tide flooded trapping the anglers on a rock. The RNLI launched from Ilfracombe and promptly reached the two remaining anglers. They were all were shaken by their experience. The angler who raised the alarm suffered injuries to his legs. Fortunately the
angler was wearing a flotation jacket. The anglers would like to raise awareness of the alternative emergency number 112 that can sometimes work when 999 does not as a result of a weak phone signal. Bideford & District Angling Club members met up at Clovelly to carry out a beach clean of the foreshore and harbour area. The Followed issues with angling related litter at the popular venue. Bideford Club were determined to show that anglers do care and condemn those who drop litter and tarnish the majority of anglers who do take their litter home. In all they collected 16 bags of rubbish of which I would estimate 1% was angling related. The vast majority of the litter was plastic and an old Ski Yogurt pot that probably began its life in the mid 70’s illustrated its long levity quite starkly.

Springtime is often a quieter time along the coast though recent years have seen good catches of ray and huss. Grey Mullet are also present with some anglers catching the species throughout the year from some marks.

LEGAL ACTION LOOMS OVER REEF WRASSE REMOVALS
Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 13
FISHING GUIDES DIARY By Craig Butler Recently I had the pleasure of welcoming Torbay Angler Lewis Newby for a guiding session here at Minehead. Lewis is an accomplished angler and a smashing lad to boot. He also has some fine fish under his belt. One notably, A fine Smoothound over 16lb caught while also on a guided trip with friend and fellow Bristol Channel shore guide Jansen Teakle, back in the summer. Like most like minded anglers it wasn’t long before we were chatting away putting the world to rights. With the weather being so unsettled it was touch and go if we went ahead. The decision was made to go for it. With a few good marks consistently producing codling we were spoilt for choice. Settling on a mark just outside Minehead. Lewis set up on the mixed ground as the tide pushed in quickly over the flat beach. The second cast produced a plump codling of 2lb 11oz. This was Lewis’s first time cod
Fish Legal and the Angling Trust have written to the government to warn that it could face legal action if it fails to protect sensitive marine sites off the South Coast of England. Thousands of English wrasse are being caught in Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) – protected under EU law – and transported to Scotland to be used as ‘cleaner’ fish by the salmon farming industry. Fish Legal has told Defra that in order to comply with the EU Habitats Directive1 it needs to assess the effect of removing wrasse – a popular angling species in the South West – in huge quantities from Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), such as Plymouth Sound, where they play a critical role in the ecosystem of the protected reefs. Where there is a risk that their removal affects the integrity of these reefs, an appropriate assessment must be undertaken. Data Deficient Few data exist on the abundance of wrasse on the protected reefs and simply introducing voluntary measures to reduce their exploitation is not enough. As a result, Fish Legal and the Angling Trust believe that the commercial wrasse fisheries within SACs should be suspended as a precautionary measure until more is known. Precautionary Approach Fish Legal is calling on the government to apply the precautionary approach to other MPAs, including Marine Conservation Zones, and manage wrasse exploitation in a co-ordinated manner to ensure the survival of wrasse stocks and the protection of the reef ecosystems they support. Evidence obtained by Fish Legal as part of
a freedom of information request suggests approximately one million wrasse a year are now being taken from reefs and protected areas along the South coast of England. More evidence obtained confirms that Marine Scotland, the competent authority where the fishery started, have no idea how many fish have been removed but are “seriously concerned about stock levels throughout Scotland”. Justin Neal, Fish Legal Solicitor dealing with the case, said: “Fish Legal, acting on behalf of the Angling Trust, are now considering a judicial review of Defra’s failure to require an appropriate assessment to be undertaken in breach of the Habitats Directive and is also considering reporting the breach to the European Commission.” David Mitchell, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust, said: “Very little appears to be known about the impact of removing wrasse both on the stock but also on the reefs they inhabit, where wrasse play an important role in the functioning of the ecosystem. It is not clear what the changes in wrasse populations would be on the reef habitats being protected under European law. We are calling for the fisheries to be suspended until appropriate assessments have been completed and the impacts are known. The IFCAs where the fisheries are based introduced various management measures in 2017, but the Angling Trust believes that many of these measures are insufficient to prevent the serious depletion of wild wrasse populations. The Angling Trust wants to see accurate records of the number of fish removed, evidence supporting whether this is sustainable, and evidence detailing what impact the removal is having on the ecosystem.

fishing in the Bristol Channel and he has only fished a handful of times for them on the south coast. So it was pleasing to know this first codling of the session was a personal best. Ok it’s not big but everyone has to start somewhere. Anyway to cut a long story short the next 3 codling were new Personal bests, just nudging it up a few ounces at a time with A 3lb 3oz codling being the best of the bunch. Lewis ended up bagging 5 in the end, keeping a couple for the table. I’d like to think that’s a positive start to anyone’s Bristol Channels cod experiences. All in all a great evening with great company and a laugh along the way with a random tree branch 20 feet up in the air and a not so special rig plus a dead sheep Lewis wanted me to remove a couple of shanks and chops from them I’ll leave that there though. Many thanks Lewis Newby for a great night.

Joe Perry and Gareth Gardiner made the early running in downriver Zone A until Steve Bonner in Zone B, landed a ray of of 1400 gms (weight conversion), putting him into the lead. This, however, was eclipsed by a bigger (1700 gms) ray, also from Zone B, landed by Lancaster’s David G. Hutchinson; this fish also took the roundfish pool. Just before the final whistle, experienced local angler, Dave Evans, landed the best flatfish, a plaice of 480 gms. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. David G. Congratulations! Georgie wins New Forest Service to Sport Award
Georgie receiving the award from Luke Sinnott, Para Athlete, member of team GB and Invictus Games competitor.
In conjunction with the New Forest Sports Council, New Forest District Council’s New Forest Sports Award Scheme looks to publicly reward and recognise commitment, achievement and excellence across sports; recognition is also given to coaches, officials and volunteers. I’m delighted to say that at their evening’s event held at the Balmer Lawn Hotel on the 8th February Mrs Georgina Moody won the nomination for the Service to Sport Award. Sue and Ady Moody and Club President Derek Smith were on hand to congratulate her. She was nominated for the Service to
Sport Award category not only for her 35 years of dedicated service to our club in the role of Honorary Secretary, but also for all the other tasks and duties she has voluntarily undertaken throughout that time to benefit our club. Whether it has been helping to sell cakes, books, plants etc from the stall we occasionally had in Lymington High Street to raise much needed funds, to early morning starts, assisting in the running of our competitions, to organising our Christmas draw, to the running of the bar, to managing the boat compound this list could go on and on! Georgie has not only been there but has often gone that extra mile to help make our club a success.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby
Another challenging month weather wise with very little activity from Burnham. I have waited until the last minute to do this report as we had a competition on the 18th Feb and this was the only time anyone made it afloat. 5 boats with 14 anglers contested the Fred Peters Trophy in what was a very tough match. Only 4 anglers brought anything back to the scales with a number not even having a bite. There was a tie for first place with James Devey and myself with thornies of 10lb 11oz and 69%. Nigel Devey took third with another thornie of 10lb 6oz and 67%. Pools was won with a codling of 5lb 2oz and 28% for Martin Quinn.
the murky water. Codling should still be around and hopefully we will get a good spring run.
The next month should hopefully see the first of the bass back in the bay, which although they have to be returned it's always nice to see one pop out of
You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.
Fish of the month for December sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a cod of 12lb 3oz and 68%. The next club competition is the Wilf Dunstone Trophy on the 18th March. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 15th March at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts
RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II
After a period of horrendous weather, boats have at last been able to venture forth. The cod run that we had hoped for never really materialised. Many small fish under the one pound range have been happy to snatch worm baits but after a while, their presence becomes a pain. This can only bide well for future seasons and thus we cannot complain. Having said all that, there have still been one or two decent fish reported though I now think we should be focussing on what is there, rather than what is not! Let's think about the offshore theme, many packs of spurdog are there for the taking if only we
can set our minds on them. Also, great huss and still conger are to be had. To me, the highlight of the past month has to be the presence of the rays. Brilliant fishing has been experienced with many good blondes to well over twenty pounds taken. On todays trip, the Alykat crew from Yeovil took over twenty rays, all falling to mackerel and squid offerings. They were also blessed with a single cod, see my point? I'm sure my next report will not mention cod but will be concentrated in the ray fishery that we are so blessed to have.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler
February is noted for being the hardest month for the UK shore angler. But thankfully here in the Bristol Channel we can experience some half decent sport from a variety of species. The biggest obstacle is the weather and every February it chucks spanner’s in the works for lots of planned trips for many of us. All it takes is bad weather on a weekend or two when most anglers can get out and it’s a write off. With little chances of fishing opportunities. Then there’s the lack of catch reports because nobody has been going and then everyone assumes the fishing is terrible. When In reality its ok. The first couple of weeks of February were exactly like this. To be honest no one can be blamed for not wanting to get ripped to bits in hooligan winds and ice cold stinging rain. When there’s been a break in the conditions, things have been almost spring like. The infamous Bristol Channel spring codling run has been shaping up nicely with 2-3lb codling easy to come by if you get a bit of reliable info. Along with these 2-3lbers are a good number of 8-12oz codlets that have turned up since Xmas. The month ahead ,looks positive for some tidy spring codling. Fresh lug and crab baits are hard to beat for them . During the spring you’ll find the codling are not widely spread out and tend to be found in localised pockets from anywhere from the Portishead area down to Porlock weir. Battery point, Ladye bay, Sandpoint, Burnham lower light, the Somerset reefs, Watchet harbour, Dunster beach, Minehead golf coarse and white mark at Minehead are just a few areas to focus on for the codling. With the potential of a positive spring codling run. I will continue with guiding sessions to target them well into May this year along with the rays and bull Huss. Theres a very realist chance of the first of the Smoothounds showing on theses guiding sessions as May approaches. But that’s a few months away yet, but nice to think about and plan all the same. Spur dogs, Bull Huss, thornback Ray, small eyed ray, spotted ray and blonde rays have been making up catches with half decent whiting also showing. Hopefully by early March the worst of the winter weather would of past and some nice settled stuff will come our way and ignite the enthusiasm of those that have been dampened. If you are thinking of visiting the Bristol Channel for the first time, or you fish it regularly and feel
you could benefit from a guiding session that’s full of helpful tips and tricks to get the best from lots of marks in the channel. Feel free to drop me a line and we can arrange a personally tailored bespoke session just for you. You will find my Somerset Sea Angling advert on a page in this issue. Anyway I wish you all the best of luck for the coming month and look forward to seeing your catches. Tightlines and happy hunting

LAST LAUGH REPORT
By John Skeggs
The start of 2018 , strong winds have continued to keep us tied up in port, allowing us to get to sea just a handful of times. Mladen Boukliev from London, made the journey to the South coast to fish aboard the Lymington based charter vessel “Last Laugh. Fishing a strong North Easterly
wind, his reward was a 15lb Cod. Other fish caught included 3 Thornebacks, a handful of Whiting and a few Conger, not bad for Inshore fishing in February! A small weather window gave us the opportunity to head over the horizon for our first mid channel wrecking trip, this proved encouraging with a dozen plump Pollack.

WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, March 2018
Port Report January to April are always the best months for pollacking out on the wrecks and this year is following that tradition with excellent catches being made right now (this weekend of 17th/18th Feb) as I write. Reports are of coming in of plenty of double figure pollack with the best ones in the 15lb-17lb range. These are obviously all falling to lures with the usual variety working and anglers swearing by their preferred personal favourites and, as ever, the Rhubarb and Custards get a lot of mentions. At the moment the boats are not having to travel right out into the middle of the Shipping Lane with wrecks in the 25 mile radius from Weymouth working at the moment. This gives the welcome bonus of less travel time and extra fishing. Apart from the pollack no other species except pout as the tide eases off has been mentioned coming from the wrecks. Inshore fishing in the first week of February was producing whiting but these do tend to move away during this month and have usually all but gone by March. Rays, conger, dogfish, pout and a few small smoothound have featured along with a couple of bonus turbot to 8lb. The weather, as well all know, has been grim to say the least during February so the trips have been few and far between but this does allow the pollack time to shoal up on the wrecks. The social media comments reveal that many anglers have lost a number of trips this year already… it is a case of keeping one’s eye on the weather and the, when a suitable window is forecast, trying to locate a vessel with spaces on if you haven’t already booked. The Deepsea Website’s feature allowing boats with spaces to be easily located is a very helpful tool. Just type in www. deepsea.co.uk and the ‘See the Availability of All Individual Spaces’ yellow and red boxes on the home page. Click on them and Bingo!..all is revealed.
March was always considered the best single month of all for the pollack so if you have been unlucky with cancellations so far then make sure you try to get onboard for the coming month. Very occasionally a cod will turn up and ling , using drift fished mackerel, will often feature towards the end of the month.

We anglers have to be optimistic. In the days when Weymouth’s plaice fishing was legendary, the fish all came from the Shambles Bank as the plaice had moved in to feed on the sandeels. Well, there’s still sandeels about so there is always the hope that the palice will turn up again. Turbot have also featured over the years in March with the big tides at the end of the month often being the most productive.

The general inshore fishing tends to be at its quietest in February and March but expect the rays (blondes, undulates and small-eyed with an increasing amount of thornback) coming from the many different inshore marks. And this year…don’t forget to enter the Fishing Competition run by Weymouth Sea Angling Centre which will run all year. It’s just £5 to enter for the year or it can be done on a single day basis for those of you who come just once or twice a year. Your Weymouth/Portland skipper will have the details and entry forms on the boat as will Weymouth Angling Centre. The event has got off to a good start already with a number of entries submitted for January and February. It’s a bit of fun….so don’t miss out.
The Weymouth and Portland skippers are very grateful for the support you anglers give them at this time of the year when every trip is eagerly anticipated. We know conditions can be testing and a tad chilly but then, we anglers are a hardy lot and not easily put off by a touch of frost and a fluffy breeze.

SQUID FEATURE
HOW TO CATCH SQUID IN THE UK Veals Mail Order - Steve Perry A few years ago myself and a group of friends started targeting squid from the open shore and on piers. It started off as just a little bit of fun with a few cheap jigs fished under floats; a method we knew had been used for a long time by other anglers in the south west.
We fished not knowing much about seasons, tides, moon phases or weather conditions and had very limited success, although the squid we did manage to land always seemed to be massive, with a healthy number around 4 – 5lb in weight taken over a period of around four years.
Sea Angling News, March 2018
Over the years we began to establish the best conditions needed to target squid in numbers. A full moon and the associated spring tides during October, November and December appear to be most productive time with the high tide falling two or three hours after sunset producing the largest numbers of squid. When it comes to weather conditions, calm frosty nights and clear water are favourable when it is not unusual to land anywhere between 40 and 60 squid in a few hours. It would seem that squid numbers are definitely up on the south coast with the season now starting earlier and ending later so there is greater
The Yamashita squid jig takes another squid
Squid Fishing Jigs Once we had established the most productive fishing times, we were keen to focus our attentions on the jigs themselves and our online research pointed towards the fact that the Yamashita jigs were insulated, or as the manufacturer referred to this fabric coating, “Warm Jacket”. This
scope than ever to start jigging for squid in the UK. It’s brilliant fun and only requires very basic tackle meaning it is perfect for introducing young anglers to the sport. When it comes to squid jigs, there are so many on the market that our biggest dilemma was deciding exactly what to go for, and why. A little online investigation revealed that squid fishing is huge in Japan and one company in particular, Yamashita, appeared to dominate the world of squid jigs. At just under sixteen pound a piece, these jigs are considerably more expensive than the poorly finished versions we had experimented with until now, but none the less, we ordered some up with a view to putting them through their paces. increases the body temperature of the jig by a degree or so which makes them all the more appealing to the feeding squid. My fishing buddy, Sam, was the first to have a cast with one of the new jigs and it didn’t take long to realise just how effective they are. By the end of this first session, I began to regret leaving my new jig at home as Sam went on to out fish me on a ratio of at least five to one! Over the next couple of seasons, we enjoyed some very productive sessions with bags of squid in excess of 40lb landed on the Yamashita Warm Jacket squid jigs. This range of squid jigs are undoubtedly the best squid fishing jigs we have used to date.
We began to note the following patterns over subsequent sessions-
A selection of Yamashita Warm Jacket squid jigs The Method
A large squid for author Steve Perry
As time went on, we started squidding earlier and earlier in the season in a bid to figure out the most productive times and tides to locate these amazing creatures which are lovely to eat, but more importantly the best bait you will find for
targeting species such as conger, cod, bass, huss and several species of ray. I’ve even used them to target much larger species including my first ever shore caught common skate which fell to a large English squid that I had caught myself.
Selecting a jig to suit conditions on the day can pay off and it’s notable how some colours seem to work better than others, depending on water clarity. In calm, clear water, natural colours, blues and browns seem to be a real killer. If there is any colour in the water, pink and orange jigs can work wonders and if it is particularly dirty, a small glow stick attached a few inches above the jig can make all the difference.
The Method Freelining the jig without any additional weight is undoubtedly the most simple and effective method we have used. Being able to spot your squid and casting to it is very productive so lights around piers and harbours should be used to your advantage. Not only will you see the squid easier but they will also be attracted to the lights. If the squid are not visible, cast your lure out and work it back sink and draw fashion. By covering some ground, you’ll soon work out if the squid are present. Nine times out ten, the jig will be taken as it falls down through the water so be
careful not to pull it way from the squid in the excitement. It’s easily done! A regular lure or spinning rod and reel loaded with light braid is all you need, and a fluorocarbon leader of around 15lb should be connected to the lure itself. Location Weymouth harbour, Brighton and the Torbay area are all recognised as venues capable of producing some good squid fishing. But there is no reason why you shouldn’t give it a try anywhere along the south coast of the UK. The Channel Islands also offer some excellent prospects.
Conservation Squid fishing is a great way to get some bait for the freezer or provide a tasty meal, but as with any form of fishing, always take only what you need and will use. Look after your catch in a cool box with some ice packs to keep it in tip-top condition. As a foot note, squid fishing can be a messy business, so a large towel to remove ink and slime from your hands is something you wont want to be without. A massive common skate makes short work of a squid bait
A nice catch of squid that will be put to good use after freezing down. Only take what you need!

MINEHEAD COD CHALLENGE By Keith Wigglesworth
On a wet and windy weekend in January, 59 intrepid anglers from the length and breadth of the country gathered in Minehead for the inaugural two-day Minehead Cod Challenge, all hoping to walk away with the £1,000 first prize that was up for grabs. Sponsored by The Old Ship Aground Hotel and organised by the Sea Angling News, this competition would be decided by the angler who caught the greatest length of cod over the two days. With the boat/position draw completed on the Friday night, Saturday morning saw the anglers gathered on the harbour wall at Minehead ready for the off. All eyes had been on the weather forecast in the run up to the competition and it was to some relief to the organiser, Keith Wigglesworth, that fleet captain Michael Webber-Griffiths, after consulting with the other skippers, gave the green light to go. At that time the sea was relatively calm with light winds and looked perfect for a days cod bashing. Loading complete, the seven charter vessels from Minehead & Watchet made their way up into Blue Anchor Bay and the competition began. All were aware that the forecast was for strong winds, yet for the first couple of hours it looked like that forecast was going to be wrong….and then, as if someone had flicked a switch, a howling westerly wind blew up. The wind against tide scenario made for uncomfortable, but not impossible fishing. Once the tide had turned some of the fleet struggled to hold anchor and although fishing was difficult, a steady number of codling were being boated. At the end of day one, Mitch Johnson held a commanding lead with 6 fish for 1.38m, with Pete Hollingbery (2 for 108cm) in second place and Steve Tyler (2 for 76cm) in third. Twenty three anglers registered scores and a total of 33 codling were caught. Pete Dutfield was in the lead for the Heaviest Fish pool with a codling at 4lb 2oz.
Day 2 dawned with a similar forecast as Day 1. Although less wind was forecast, it was expected to rain most of the day. The decision as to whether to go or not was again left up to the skippers, although by this time a number of anglers had decided that enough was enough and had scratched from the competition. This resulted in the organiser having to cancel two boats and arrange a hasty redraw of the anglers remaining from those boats. Given the green light to go, the remaining five boats again headed for Blue Anchor Bay with the anglers knowing that a couple of decent fish could easily put them in line for top spot. Again, a steady stream of codling were boated, measure and then released. Terry Giles on Osprey landed a 4lb 10oz fish that put him into first place for the Heaviest Fish pool. Phil Clarke, Darren Rose, Mike Patten and James Wigglesworth all managed to catch multiple fish and by the time day was over it was anyone’s guess as to who would come out on top. Day 2 had seen twenty four anglers record fish with 52 being caught. After a quick totting up Organiser Keith Wigglesworth announced the results and Julian Abraham, owner of The Old Ship Aground, presented the cash prizes and trophies to the winners. Phil Clarke had managed to pip Darren Rose to the top spot by a mere 1cm and 18cm separated the top 4 anglers. A total of 85 fish were recorded (only 2 kept) for a combined length of 23.23m. Keith and Julian both thanked all the entrants for their support of the competition and the skippers for their hard work. Keith further thanked Julian, Janina and staff at the Old Ship Aground for their sponsorship and help over the weekend and Harry from Veals Mail Order and Steve Batchelor for their support and donations to the prize table. The date for next years Challenge was given as Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of January 2019

Recreational Charter Boat Trip 28th January. On Sunday 28th January Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational charter boat trip out of Poole aboard Dick Peckham’s boat “Strongbow”. 8 club members braved the weather which was a strong westerly wind gusting up to 25 miles an hour. Dick decided to head for a mark one mile out in Poole Bay which was in a sheltered spot by the Purbeck and dropped anchor on a sand bar. Before Dick could put the kettle on Paul Wilson (a new member) caught a small eyed ray weighing 4lb 13oz and straight after that all the others were catching rays.
WHAT WAS CAUGHT BY WEST BAY SEA ANGLING CLUB. Due to the rough sea the first match of the year on the 1st January had to be cancelled. A few days later Steve Harwood went fishing off Chesil Beach and caught a huge Undulate Ray weighing 14lb 2oz, which once weighed was returned alive back in the sea. Other fish caught off Chesil were a Conger eel weighing 16lb, and some dogfish, whiting and pout.
