CHARITIES AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES GATHER TO DISCUSS DROWNING PREVENTION IN SCOTLAND Scottish local authorities met today (Tuesday, April 9) with water safety charities to discuss and shape policies to prevent drowning deaths and serious injuries. Representatives from Perth and Kinross Council, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) led workshop sessions at the water safety summit at the RNLI’s headquarters in Perth. During the day, breakout sessions were held to allow for in-depth discussions about water safety and to share best practice for accident prevention near and on water. During these talks, local authorities were encouraged to move towards developing their own policy on water safety. This is a key objective of the Scottish Drowning Prevention Strategy 2018-2026. Scotland has an estimated 30,000 freshwater lochs and a huge coastline, giving residents and tourists considerable access to water. The most recent data taken from the Water Incident Database (WAID) shows that there were 46 accidental drowning fatalities in Scotland and a further 26 water-related suicides in 2017. These statistics reflect the fact that Scotland’s rate of accidental drowning is also almost double the UK average. Carlene McAvoy, community safety development manager at RoSPA, said: “At
NEW FISHERIES MINISTER
present, Scotland carries a disproportionate rate of accidental drowning fatalities in comparison to other areas within the UK. This is completely unacceptable and it is incumbent on us to act. “I am encouraged by the discussions that have taken place with local authorities and look forward to continuing to work with our partners to take action to minimise the risk of drowning and other accidents in Scottish waters.” Michael Avril, RNLI community safety partner for Scotland, said: “RNLI is delighted to have been able to facilitate today’s meeting with RoSPA and our partners in Scottish local government. I am confident we will all go forward today with a renewed sense of common purpose and be united in our efforts to prevent serious accidents and death and on Scotland’s coast and inland waters”. The workshop follows the November release of a RoSPA a report entitled Local Authority Approaches to Managing Water Safety, which recommends that councils should share good practice and successes in water safety by joining Water Safety Scotland, a group of organisations from across the country dedicated to tackling drowning. The report is the culmination of a study in which all 32 of Scotland’s local authorities were surveyed on their management of water safety.
Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, has been appointed as the new Fisheries Minister following the resignation of George Eustice. The Angling Trust will be securing a meeting with Mr Goodwill to build on the positive progress made getting recreational fishing recognised as a stakeholder in the new UK Fisheries Bill as well as securing funding to promote and develop sea angling.
BASS BACK IN THE BAG! April sees the bag limit for recreational catches of a bass open for 2019. Anglers are allowed to keep up to one bass per day over 42cm until the end of October. We hope to be able to bring you more news later in the year about the possibility of opening up the bag limit further based on new scientific advice.

THAMES ESTUAURY by Lee Bolingbroke
What with continuous winds from the east it has been dificult for many local ports but we are very lucky to have plenty of rays to catch very close in so sheltered fishing has been very good, I know some anglers are getting fed up with rays but I can remember twenty years ago when we had to steam off fifteen miles to get our anglers rays. Its the old saying to much of a good thing !!!! Plenty of whiting still being caught also, and smooth hounds are starting to show up in numbers manly small to mediums but the big fish will follow on very soon. Bass are being caught by the commercial boys it seems they can take almost what they want but anglers its a one fish only per trip so that could be ten fish if we have ten
anglers abound if you get my drift and the skipper counts also.
Another ray bender on Sophie Lea
Few small bass showing up now
Out the other day flat calm so went off shore told the anglers to beef up there tackle traces as there may be a few spurs about, we had two snap offs for the anglers that didn’t take heed and the boat beside me was also getting bit off so although we did not land any they were defiantly around. Lots of porpoises around off shore we were entertained by around twelve all day and it all makes up for a memorable day for our anglers. Big changes will happen in our part of the English Channel as the sea warms and day light hours lengthen with tope mackerel bass hounds Etc so there will be plenty to keep our anglers busy.

PLYMOUTH
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
On the whole shore fishing around the Plymouth and South West Devon area is still very much on the slow side although with a number of plaice comps currently taking place most anglers are targeting these (not with a great amount of success it must be said). Whilst the weather is now glorious the recent run of strong easterlies certainly didn’t help the plaice fishing and now the weather is settling down the annual invasion of spider crabs is now well under-way so its’ just a case of trying to fish through them. To date the best fish weighed-in for the 2-month along South West Sea Baits Plaice Comp is a fish of just over 2lb registered by Rob Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC caught from East Portlemouth. Rob Hobbs of Robs Tackle and Bait has been finding some cracking huss this year and a trip to a mark he hadn’t fished in many years produced another good fish for him of 12-8 whilst fellow club angler Martin Floyd had a nice huss of 11lb. This is now a good time of year for targeting big huss from the shore and for those new to this type of fishing it can be quite daunting going out and fishing rock marks for the first time (particularly accessing the more remote spots). My suggestion for those
new to huss fishing would be to try the rock ledges at the mouth of the River Dart over high water on spring tides. These marks are quite easy to access and offer the chance of a very large huss during this time of year. Baits don’t have to be anything fancy – just plain old mackerel and squid but be prepared to lose plenty of leads. Rob Batten and fellow club member Leigh Battishill decided to take a break from fishing for the plaice with a recent trip up to low-water reefs of the Bristol Channel. In amongst the many thornback ray, Rob found a cracking LSD of 3-10 which is an absolute beast of a doggie for the channel. Nice going Rob. The spell of strong easterly winds kept many of the boats in harbour over the past month although there has been the odd break in the weather which has allowed boats to get out and target some of the superb inshore boat fishing we have along this coastline. Captures aboard Crusader have included double-figure huss along with smoothies, blonde ray and eels. Similar captures have also been reported from Sea Angler. That’s it from me this month – hope you all manage to get out and make the most of this glorious weather and find a few fish. Happy Dipping!

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS
Sea Angling News, May 2019
CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers
Since last months report the fishing has slowed down slightly but thankfully the fish seem to be on the feed again. There has been plenty of ray caught, mainly small eyed ray with the odd blonde still about. Whilst targeting the ray with sandeel some anglers have been lucky enough to pick up some turbot. They do show from time to time along the beach but nothing of huge sizes. Still a nice surprise for any angler. The plaice are still about but with the spider crabs being in full force they are very hard to get through too. Mark Mathews landed a cracker of 3lb on peeler crab in the dark. Well done mate.
Weymouth angling Center held there annual plaice comp on chesil which saw 45 anglers weighing in at the end of the match with a total of 92 plaice, 10 dabs and a solitary sole. Overall winner - Darren Bond - 170cm (3 plaice, 2 dabs, 1 sole) Longest flat - Scott Christopher- 46cm Pairs winner - Till Hall & Kyle Blackmore A few bream are also starting to show along with some gurnard which means only one thing, summers on its way! Until next time, tight lines!

POOLE / DORSET
POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins
Steve (Shouty) joined a local group on a wrecking trip and although the fishing was generally slow he landed a PB Bull Huss of 13lb. Pollack dominate the wreck fishing at present with most wrecks holding fish although these fish are in prime condition we found when filleted that none of these fish had full stomachs, this time of year they should be coughing up bait fish. The outer Banks have produced some fantastic fishing this year but it is starting to tail off as the Spurs move up the channel. Inshore on the other hand is starting to take off with good catches of Plaice along the shores, in amongst the Plaice are some small Turbot and Brill as a bonus mixed in are a few Gurnards. On the rocks marks the Bream are starting to be caught with some early ones hitting the 2lb range just remember that the females lay the eggs and it is the males who then look after the nests so if you are taking a couple home please only take the badly hooked ones and balance any others, this is a fishery we need to protect and manage for the future. I had a
quick try for mini species as an experiment on the 3/4/19 and within 30 minutes over slack water we landed 7 which added to the larger fish gave us a total of 15 not a bad sign for the Poole Species Comp. On the 9th April anglers fishing onboard the Mistress Linda they landed over 75 Bream and 15 Plaice, Bass and Wrasse. Jayne Hills was the star landing the biggest Bream and Plaice and the 1st Mackeral of the season. The week leading up to Easter saw some very good Bream fishing with London based anglers Chris and Peter using their new more sensitive Tubertini rods and these improved their catch rates with both anglers catching 15 plus Bream each and a few Plaice. Bream comp is 12/5/2019 ,Cod comps are 17/11/2019 and 8/12/2019 for more details please call Andy on 01202676597. SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
Our patience in March was rewarded with a week’s worth of good weather to round the month off, and on a nice neap tide no less! It seems like the weather makes a mess of those smaller tides so often these days so it’s nice to get one in. We were treated to 5 straight days of flat calm seas and good fishing. Most days were spent on the wrecks making targetting the big spring pollack with an hour or two spent at anchor on the way in to do some filleting and target the spurdogs and blonde rays. We have been doing well on the regular wrecks for this time of year averaging 30 fish or so a day, still plenty of double figure fish to help boost that personal best. Yesterday we managed the first cod of the year, hopefully the first of many. We used one of the smallest tides of the year to explore some new wrecks with positive results and look forward to getting out there again soon. On
the banks the fishing is still nonstop with all different types of rays showing up along with spurs, congers, huss and some early tope. As an angler I love these types of trips at anchor due to the variety of species but it seems this year they have proved harder trips to fill than the long distance wreck stuff. Inshore the spell of warm weather has started to heat the waters back up and we have seen the arrival of the first bream slightly earlier than usual. We are used to seeing the smaller fish arrive first but were pleasantly surprised with half a dozen fish over 2lb in our first session. Elsewhere we have been getting tucked into some decent plaice up to 4lb, hard fighting on the lighter tackle. The turbot are plentiful but nothing monstrous yet so fingers crossed for later in the month. Plenty of spaces for bream fishing over the coming weeks as well as the first of the cod trips.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT
Sea Angling News, May 2019
NORTH DEVON REPORT
By Wayne Thomas
It’s been an encouraging start to spring with several bass already tempted using both lures and bait. Smoothound have been caught from their traditional haunts a couple of weeks earlier than expected. As the water temperatures steadily climb ray will be caught from North Devon’s surf beaches. Combe Martin SAC hold their annual Puttsborough Open on June 1st where some good small eyed rays are normally tempted along with dogfish, bass and the occasional surprise. Bull huss have a been a welcome feature of shore sport over recent seasons and I expect this to continue with good numbers already reported from inshore boat marks. Grey mullet have moved into local estuaries where a few thick lips have already been tempted. Thin lips are undoubtedly present and will succumb to baited spinners.
There are a small band of anglers starting to experiment with fly fishing for mullet an exciting branch of the sport that also brings a good number of bass. Boat anglers have enjoyed good sport off Ilfracombe with spurdog, bull huss, conger and ray from marks close to Ilfracombe. The first tope of the season have already been caught and a few large porbeagle have been brought to the side of Reel Deal Skippered by Dan Hawkins. Anglers will be hoping that mackerel are more plentiful this season. Recent seasons have been very disappointing with fishing for these once prolific fish very patchy.
Early smoothound
Holiday anglers can enjoy good sport from Ilfracombe Pier where LRF tactics can bring a wide variety of species including rare mini species.

Fish Legal threatens judicial review over Cornwall IFCA’s failure to save undersized bass from commercial fishing nets
Tel/Fax: 01643 705225
Aquazid Studio Illustrations

Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority has been threatened with judicial review following a decision not to introduce a new emergency byelaw which would have protected juvenile bass from commercial fishing nets. The IFCA has been given formal notice by Fish Legal, acting on behalf of its member the Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society (BASS), following concerns at the lack of regulation of bass exploitation. Over recent years, scientific advice published annually by the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) has repeatedly shown bass stock at a dangerously low level as the result of commercial overfishing, successive years of very low numbers of young fish reaching maturity and a lack of coordinated control measures.

In 2015, the European Commission increased the minimum landing size for bass from 36cm to 42cm, allowing female bass the opportunity to spawn before capture. At the time, the Commission said: “Allowing catching and landing of sea bass at a size of less than 42cm seriously harms the reproductive capacity of this stock, contributing significantly to the overall fishing mortality, and causes a serious threat to the conservation of the sea bass stock.” In June 2018, the ICES assessment stated that bass spawning stock biomass had fallen further and was “below critical level”, making it more important than ever to protect juvenile bass. Last December, the Cornwall IFCA was told by a representative of the Marine Management Organisation that its officers had witnessed multiple landings of undersized bass from the St Ives Bay zone within the IFCA’s District. At the same meeting, a proposal was made to introduce an emergency byelaw to increase net mesh size to 108mm to avoid undersized bass
being caught by commercial fishermen. In February, the Cornwall IFCA met again to consider passing the emergency byelaw but following advice from Defra that such a byelaw “could be subject to challenge”, the IFCA committee decided not to goahead with the byelaw. Fish Legal believes that Cornwall IFCA did not properly consider the issues fully and should have introduced the increased mesh size to force boat owners to protect juvenile bass. Fish Legal also argues that, under European regulations, there is an urgent need to take measures for the minimum catch size to be respected and that need continues with the current threat to bass population through unlawful netting and landing of undersized bass. Furthermore, Fish Legal believes the Cornwall IFCA Committee was ‘misdirected’ by its Chief Officer regarding the workload implications of introducing an emergency byelaw. David Curtis, a Committee member of BASS, said: “In February, sea anglers were dismayed when the Cornwall IFCA decided not to take urgent action to stop the slaughter of juvenile bass in its district. The IFCA argued that it was “foreseeable” that, three years after the increase to a 42cm Minimum Conservation Reference Size, commercial fishermen would still be using nets with too small a mesh size and therefore it could not introduce an emergency byelaw. BASS believes Cornwall IFCA did not consider the matter properly and therefore its decision was unlawful. “BASS is deeply grateful to Fish Legal for helping us give formal notice of a proposed claim for judicial review. We hope Cornwall IFCA will reconsider its decision and provide the urgent protection that these juvenile bass need.”

LANGSTONE
LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Spring has definitely sprung. We have had daffodils in the garden, lambs in the fields and plaice in Bracklesham Bay. The winterstored boats are going back in the water, fishing days are longer and mullet are back in the marina. The early spring doldrums are behind us and we are looking forward to the arrival of the summer species. Boats pushing out to the Channel wrecks and reefs have had some good quality pollack. Heber Crawford shows off a brace from a recent trip. Offshore marks have produced spurdog and bullhuss of good size. Jocky Park shows a spurdog of 11lb and Neil Glazier a Bullhuss of 13lb 4oz on the same trip. The banks usually hold resident stocks of good-sized blonde ray. Jason Gillespie shows the best blonde of the day weighing 27lb caught on launce flapper. There is always a chance of turbot and brill on the same banks, and Jason also caught a beautifully marked turbot while Peter Dudgeon caught a brill of 4lb. The highlight of the last month has been the arrival of plaice in very good numbers compared to recent years. The most productive methods have been drifting with a spoon and beads baited with lugworm or ragworm. As the boat moves over the mark, tapping the bottom with the weight then lifting the bait will induce a take if the fish are there. They can be drawn in by the flash of the spoon from quite a distance, particularly if the water is clear as it has
been once the winds died down. Stephen Fordred shows a typical plaice of 1lb 8oz, although fish of up to 5lb have been reported. Boats fishing static baits have been plagued by starfish with is rather worrying. Starfish eat the same young shellfish as the plaice, and concentrations of starfish can decimate shellfish beds. One or two starfish is a good sign that you are in the right place on a shellfish bed. Too many starfish means you might not have that shellfish bed for much longer. Southsea Marina Disabled Angling Club has the use of the boat Lady Elsa. On a recent trip skipper Steve Kelly added to his species list with a Bull Huss while his veteran crew reminded us all how to catch plaice – George Dominy is still on form aged 85. Southsea Marina Angling Club Fish of the Month was a 21lb Spurdog caught by Jon Leythorne, which also leads the Catch and Release competition at 131% of the specimen size. We are still awaiting the arrival of the main run of bream, and that should happen any day now. A few garfish have been caught and they tend to arrive in these waters with the bream and slightly ahead of the mackerel. We have already seen a few small smoothhound and the breeding adults should be appearing soon. Next month we hope to be reporting some tope too.

BURNHAM ON SEA REPORT By Richard Saxby
There has been a bit more activity in the past month both from Burnham and further afield. With the clocks changing bringing longer days spring has definitely sprung and temperatures are slowly rising. The first bass have been caught in the bay, the odd codling are still hanging around and hounds are showing down channel so plenty to go for. Sunday 24th March Nigel Devey, Andy Georgiou and Martin Quinn towed down to Weymouth for the first time this year. The shambles produced a few small turbot, dogs and a nice brill of 5lb 4oz for Nigel in the morning. The afternoon was spent at anchor with hounds, spurdog and blonde rays adding the the species count. March 30th saw Four Buoys launch from Burnham with myself, Jack and Stephen Saxby on board. A short trip over high on a neap tide had us anchored in 60 feet of water off the end of Brean Down. Fishing was ok with a steady stream of dogs and eels and the odd thornback. On slack water I had the only cod of the day at 7lb 6oz.
We manged to catch 5 bass to 7lbs in amongst a steady stream of dogs, rays and eels. Lots of fish were caught by all the boats but finding one insize was proving difficult with just 3 fish making it back to the scales. A bass of 7lb and 88% was enough to give me 1st place with 2nd place going to Aaron devey with a lsd of 2lb 6oz and 79%. Terry Garrett took 3rd with a bass of 3lb 10oz and 45%. We held our presentation night on the Thursday before easter with Nigel Devey doing paticulary well including the Mustad trophy for most points over the year. Top boat for the year went to Martin Quinns “Seannies Fler”. A full list of trophy winners will be on our web site soon. Fish of the month for March sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Richard Saxby with a cod of 7lb 6oz and 41%. The next club comp is the Wilf Dunstone trophy on the 5th May
April 7th was our Vicoue Trophy and 4 boats with 12 anglers launched in not ideal conditions but the forecast was for it to ease during the day and thankfully it did. All boats stayed local and as the bass restrictions had been relaxed a little we decided to try and find one on Four Buoys.
The next club meeting is on Thursday 16th May at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts
RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II
Stiff easterly winds have curtailed many charter trips, and with temperatures plummeting, angling has taken a bit of a hiding here. All said, the trips that have taken place have not been completely disastrous. One of the most successful of the Bristol Channel species of recent years has been the bull huss. These species have featured in most trips with some fantastic specimens taken. The best aboard Alykat was a monster male fish of 20lb 8oz taken just a few days before this print date by Gloucester angler Mike Jane. His bait was mackerel and squid strip on a running ledger rig. On the same day PJ Smith took
a cracking small eyed ray of 13 lb. These sporty rays will soon be featuring in boat catches from the many sandbank areas local to Minehead. Smoothounds are also making an appearance, with some good fish falling to crab offerings. My advice would be to put some time to collecting hardback shore crabs rather than spending a fortune on peelers, not only more economical, but I think more productive. One or two tope already showing on offshore patches so the next month or so should show a marked improvement with these fish, best so far is a fish of 33lb falling to Martyn Pratt from Southmead!

Given the time of year and despite a lot of Easterly winds, fishing has been pretty good. Inshore, the early run of Plaice have been most welcome. Ranging from 1lb to 4lb these beautifully marked fish offer good sport on light tackle. The best baits have been black lug tipped with prawn and Ragworm tipped with squid. Basically any cocktail is worth a try. Further West, the Bream have arrived,
squid strips fished on a paternoster is by far the best method for catching them. Our first Bream trip of the season produced fish of 3lb and 3lb 2oz. Offshore: There are still good numbers of Spurdogs, Rays and the odd Pollack. Mid Channel Wrecks: Fishing continues to be steady with mainly Pollack. Lets hope the Cod turn up in the coming weeks. The season has kicked off to a good start in the West Wight area, with most of the summer fish arriving through the inshore marks. The Bream have made a show in Christchurch bay and the Shingles, plus the Western Solent. There have seen lots of Hounds coming to the net, but even though the are on the small side they are great sport on light gear. The main event at the moment are the Plaice which have shown in good numbers over the inner banks, it would seem that the further you go to the East along the bank the bigger they get with some fish topping 4lb. We have had over a week of Easterly winds which have slowed the fishing down a little, but still worth going.

Port Report East winds, eh? Don’t you just love them? Nothing like a good Easterly to make the fish even harder to catch, especially the flat fish. And, in tandem with the easterlies, it’s been cold…as in very cold. So, with the limitations and challenges imposed by the above it is very gratifying to see how many fine flatfish have been caught throughout April with plaice and turbot very much providing the highlights as can be seen from the photo’s sent in by the skippers. Local Weymouth angler, Jon Rollason caught a super plaice of 4lb 6oz during a trip on Ryan Casey’s Meercat with Simon Homewood landing an excellent turbot of 15lb 2oz from Dan Clarke’s Portland based ‘Fins-Up’. The skippers describe the general inshore fishing as being very good with non-stop action coming from spurdog to a very impressive 17lb 12oz , conger and huss as well as some excellent blonde rays well into double figures. Lyle Stantiford, Supa Nova, reports a particularly fine blonde ray of 23lb being the best of to grace his deck. And, apart from these larger species, there has been some great catches of bream to 3lb 14oz with 150 coming to the net on Dave Pitman’s Atlanta with the skipper reporting that 80% of these were returned to the sea. Offshore the wrecking, when it can take place, has resulted in pollack to 15lb… but bear a thought for two of the skippers who were out on the wrecks only to be thwarted from producing a good day for the anglers due to picking up some of the rubbish that floats just under the surface in our seas. A giant ‘dumpy bag’ wrapped round one of the boat’s propellors resulted in a shortened day and a long., slow steam back to port where it was discovered that the gearbox had sustained damage. Today (April 17th) is a calm day but that particular vessel is not at sea having to wait for expert mechanics to arrive and fit a new gearbox. Boat owners know that marine engines and gearboxes are stupidly overpriced and this is just what is not wanted after a long, hard winter. And so…on to May and what to expect. The Shambles Bank has been great mark over recent years with turbot being around for most of the year. These are a very much in demand species….to catch one is something special…so be realistic about what to expect. It’s impossible to know when turbot will decide to feed which is why many charters are prepared to fish all day in the hope of being in the right place when the fish decide to bite. There may be a few plaice still about. It’s been great to see a few showing already and the good news is that there is an improvement in the marks that were trashed in the Valentine Day’s big storm of 2014. Prior to this destruction, these particular marks fished much better later in the year when the plaice were also in much better condition. Right now it is very likely that the plaice are skinny having thrown their roe
and are in the process of ‘fattening up’. There’s a lot to plaice fishing….and the tactics are different in every port and indeed vary during the tide. Your skipper wants you to catch. Ask him what the best rigs are and take his advice. Yes, there will be occasions when an angler’s own designed rig will outfish the recommended rig…but keep an open mind as tackle and baits do vary throughout the season. The general reef fishing will be good with all those species mentioned above (conger, huss, rays, spurs…and bream) and the banks will continue to produce various rays, blondes mainly, as well as the chance of turbot and brill. The inshore fishing for the bigger fish has definitely improved over recent years with the charter skippers reporting some very hectic sessions.

Offshore we will all be hoping for the return of the cod after two very lean seasons. The Channel Island trips will be well under way with the boats concentrating on wrecking on the way over and back and aiming for the flatfish on the middle days. Hopefully Alderney will start of produce some bass in May. Thank you to everyone for supporting the Weymouth and Portland Charter fleet. The skippers are very grateful for your custom. We hope you will all have a successful May. Good Luck to All!!

BACK TO BASICS By Martin Wood So following on from last month’s back to basics and putting things all together to improve our angling let’s get onto bait presentation, again we’ve looked at hook lengths and tidal currents and we have glossed over what venues to fish, So the next natural step is to look at the actual bait how it’s put together and presented and what rigs to use... Obviously different venues have different challenges like snaggy ground, or distance to cover to get your bait where they really need to be. As so many rays are now coming into our shores (see picture for types)
let’s focus on a couple of ray baits. With presentation you would ideally want you baits neat and narrow due to the size of the rays mouths which is great if we need to punch a bait out a long way as we can keep it streamlined and lighter two sand eels bait elasticated together is a great bait if too many other species are pinching one san eel on its own and then chopping of the heads just by the gill plate and the tails as well lets out plenty of scent and also in turn stops any spinning of the bait when you come to reel it in saving any tangles with your rigs.

Win-Sum League competition 17th April. On Wednesday evening 17th April Lymington & District Sea fishing Club held its 2nd Win-Sum League competition held on Avon Beach and 15 club members took part. The weather was again perfect with a slight easterly wind, but sadly the fishing was slow, and what fish were caught consisted of whiting, conger eel, pouting, bass and rockling. The best flat fish pool was not won so this is a double rollover on the next competition. The best round fish pool was won with a conger eel of 63cm caught by Chris Ellis. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are gently measured and returned to the sea straight away. Results: Zone !. 1st Luke Woodford 182cm, 2nd Malcolm Stote 81cm 3rd Ben Daniel 70cm 4th Mark Duncan 64cm, 5th Glyn Savin 28cm 6th Paul Watson 24cm 7th Pete Chamberlain 21cm Zone 2. 1st Chris Ellis 128cm 2nd Colin Saunders 59cm 3rd Andrew Dawkins 27cm 4th John Sloper 22cm.
With ray species the main object we need to achieve is to keep the bait hard on the sea bed and have enough hook length to allow the ray to easily take the bait, it has to be longer due to the way rays take bait and the way the rays anatomy is also made. When rays find the bait they tend to then move over it and chomp on it which at the rod tip translates to the rod tip normally bending over slowly and stead but don’t strike straight away wait for the second dip make sure the ray has the bait in the mouth for a good hook up. A good average and common hook length is around 30 inches (2 1/2 ft.) enough room for the ray to sit and take the bait and not too long that it takes the bait without you knowing about it and I would use a 3/0 hook size. So let’s look at rigs… If you’re fishing snaggy grounds most anglers will opt for the pulley rig which is the most suitable as it snags less and get the sinker quickly up off the floor and keeps it in front of the fish which keeps it clear of obstacles bringing fish an tackle home. With any rigs for rays I personally tend to use a single hook one its easier for unhooking
rays should it be taken deeper and is a lot friendlier for the fish and two there is less chance of your hooks snagging up whilst out there. If its mixed to clean ground I would look for a rig that presents the bait in a much better fashion than the pulley rig so either a running ledger style or an up and over rig for a longer trace and more distance or my personal favourite a pulley dropper rig as I find it keeps the bait harder on the floor and gives off a good presentation no matter which way the currents are pulling it as the rig allows itself to adjust which in turn keeps the presentation perfect, again I would only use a single 3/0 hook. I find Pennels are not really needed and again save a lot of time when unhooking fish should it be taken deeper than normal. So some good types of bait to use would be narrow strips of Bluey or Mackerel, Sand eel, Squid or combo baits of all mentioned paired up and kept neat and narrow and not forgetting to snip off the head and tails of sand eels or other fish baits. So its short and simple this month time to start putting it all together and hit the beaches so tight lines and good luck!

Win-Sum League Competition 20th March. On Wednesday evening 20th March Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its first Wi-Sum League competition of 2019. This was fished at Hordle Cliffs in which 14 club members took part. The weather for the evening was just perfect, warm with calm winds, but sadly the fish were few and far between. Fish that were caught included smoothhound, pouting, whiting and rockling. The largest round fish pool was won with a smoothhound of 39cm by Pete Chamberlain. No flat fish were weighed in so this pool was not won. Results: Zone 1. 1st John Tharme 64cm 2nd Garry Mann 60cm 3rd Luke Woodford 52cm 4th Gavin Sloper 23cm, 5th Chris Ellis 22cm. Zone 2. 1st Andrew Dawkins 67cm 2nd Malcolm Stote 64cm 3rd Pete Chamberlain 44cm 4th John Sloper 26cm, 5th Michael Dawkins 20cm. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are measured and gently released straight away.

Shallow Boat Competition 14th April 2019. On Sunday 14th April on a dry, sunny day with a very cold moderate breeze Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its second Shallow Boat competition. In Which six club members took part and fish caught included dogfish, whiting, black bream and plaice. 20 fish in total were weighed for a total weight of 25lbs 11oz. The heaviest fish was a black bream of 1lb 4.6oz which was 37.5% of specimen weight caught by Brian Ansell. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are measured, a weight given and then gently released. Results: 1st Adrian Moody 4 fish 5lb 10.4oz 2nd Brian Ansell 4 fish 5lb 1.4oz, 3rd Barry Littlefair 4 fish 4lb 15.2oz 4th Denis Mapes and Alan Martin both 3 fish 4lb 8oz, 6th Derek Smith 2 fish 3lb.
LDSFC Large Boat Competition 7th April 2019. Ten members headed out into Christchurch Bay for their first Large Boat competition of the year aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage. Strong tides and easterly winds necessitated fishing fairly close in. Drifting for pollack and plaice failed to produce any results, so a move further out to anchor over rough ground was tried. This proved to be more productive but the fish had to be worked for. Several mini-species were caught, including a good Baillons wrasse by club president Derek Smith. Unfortunately for him mini-species are not included in the competition; he was, however, compensated later by catching one of only two plaice to be caught on the day. As the tide began to flood one last move was made. Again, sport was slow but resulted in the best fish of the day in the shape of an undulate ray for Ed Taylor. It weighed in at 12 lbs 6oz before being safely released. Other species caught included tompot blenny, black bream, grey gurnard, dogfish, pout and whiting. Results 1st Ed Taylor 60 points 2nd Paul Hollyoak 42 points 3rd Roland Blomfield 39 points 4th Derek Smith 34 points 5th Mark Duncan 33 points 6th Arran Harmer 29 points 7th Jane Hopkins 23 points 8th Alec Harmer 20 points 9th Malcolm Gerrish 9 points 10th Anton Emblen 0 points.
SSAC The results/Brighton marina there was 10 seniors and 2 juniors with seven seniors and one junior weighing in six flounders and fourteen plaice for a total length of 657cm and a converted weight of 19lb and 7oz. 1st Chris Barnes 4 fish converted weight of 3lb 14oz/2nd Mick Teague 4 fish converted weight 3lb 8oz/3rd Gurmid Ladher 3 fish converted weight 3lb 1oz/4th Bill Baynes 2 fish converted weight 2lb 4oz

TEAM SAN LRF REPORT With the forecast set to be a belter for the bank holiday weekend a few of the SAN team decided to have a couple of nights away with Dorset being the chosen destination. With beach and lrf kit loaded we set off on Friday morning full of enthusiasm. After a quick stop at the campsite to set up home for a couple of nights we were off to Weymouth to see what mini species we could find. It kicked off in spectacular fashion with corkwing wrasse, tompot blennies and scorpion fish coming up for all parties. It really was a fish a drop on small ragworm baits with a few falling to lure tactics. After a few hours we dicided that an early night was in order so we could be up early for the main assault. The fishing was that productive that the beach gear stayed in the car all weekend

as we couldn't get enough of all the weird and wonderful small fish that Weymouth harbour has to offer. We finished the weekend with a tally of ten species which I didn't think was too bad. We had some awesome fun when a of garfish decided to pass through in the afternoon and we even made it over to the pleasure pier to winkle out a squid. The highlight of the weekend was without a doubt young Max Sullys Scorpion fish which was just huge! I've certainly not witnessed one that size. It was a great experience fishing amongst all the people who were out enjoying a drink in the sun in this vibrant seaside town. We hope you've all managed to get out a land wet a line this weekend and made the most of this beautiful weather!
