Ellesmere Port Grove Sea Angling Club had their annual five day trip to Yell on the Shetlands on Kenny Graham’s boat Oberon with seven other members. They were fishing around the famous Muggle Flugga and in just the first three hours of the trip club secretary Peter Sillito hooked into what is the biggest Coalfish ever caught in Scotland on rod and line at 34lb with a length of 43 inches and a girth of 27 inches. The fish took about 20 minutes to land and he also had a 15lb Coalfish on his other hook. Peter was using all Snowbee gear and remarked that it performed brilliantly. Well done Peter from the whole SAN Team.

THAMES ESTUARY

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

We have just had one of the largest competitions held on the east coast with twenty plus boats competing on behalf of the police nationals, boats from the river Crouch Southend, West Mersea Bradwell & Brightlingsea endured a very blustery two days event with winds up to 30mph, any other venue would have probably had to cancel but the relatively sheltered waters of the Thames estuary helped the big competition to go ahead. Top boat with first and second place contenders went to anglers on board Sophie Lea from Brightlingsea Essex at the time of writing this I can not report who the third place went to however all the skippers did very well in this event enduring a very scruff y day at sea to get the job done. Plenty of good fishing was had by the competing anglers from all over the country with rays

whiting dabs hounds bass and dogs landed in abundance and my thanks goes out to Ian Hinchcliff who organised the event which must have been very stressful for him well done Ian. So what about the fishing well our competition really sums up what you can expect to be catching around our estuary’s at the moment cod is one fish that is lacking although most trawlers are telling me that they are all getting a sprinkling of codling on most tows and generally it’s not until November when we would start to see cod in numbers any way so don’t panic, in fact a boat had an eight pounder only yesterday, and Ray Hamsted charter skipper from West Mersea had two codling sitting beside my boat last week so we are getting there perhaps next month I may be reporting humongous catches of cod however the Thames estuary is still catching plenty of fish on all the charter boats so you are sure of a good day out cod or no cod.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

If I was to sum up the angling scene so far this year in Plymouth its’ definitely been a case of quality over quantity and each month I seem to be commenting upon a capture and thinking there is no way that is going to be bettered and then I’m proved wrong! Well, right on queue Rob Wheaton raised the bar yet again with the capture of a potential British Gilthead Bream of 12-3 from the shore. I’m not going to go into great detail here as I’m sure the capture has been given enough column inches elsewhere in this month’s SAN but just to say congratulations Rob as you’ve certainly put in the hard hours over many years mate and this capture is very richly deserved! Hopefully ratifying the fish as a new British Record will be a formality and you’ll finally get your name on that very special list. Elsewhere Gav Cuthbertson and Dave Downs of Castaways SAC continue to find some cracking specimen fish from the shore, this month registering superb black bream of 3-4 to Dave (which was a new club record) and 3-2 to Gav along with others to 3lb. Nice fishing lads, you boys are smashing it this year. Whilst I don’t get any reports from their fish recorder, Alan Hobbs of Roving Rods SAC recently recorded a nice lure-caught bass of 9-2. This is certainly the best time of year for finding the bigger bass and many are often caught whilst anglers are fishing rough ground marks for big eels (particularly in the Tamar). Fishing beaches such as Seaton near Looe after a good on-shore blow with large fish baits will certainly put you in with a chance of latching into a big bass. In Devon the beaches of Challaborough and Bigbury are also worth a shout along with any of the rock ledges between Stoke Point and Mothecombe. However please take care when fishing from these marks and take note of the swell forecast.

I’ve still not heard of any captures of codling from the Tamar as yet although everything does seem to be around 4-6 weeks behind this year. I have heard of good catches of thornies to 8-9lb on live prawn from the Tamar at the usual spots such as Devils, Mutton and North Corner. On the Cornish side Looking Glass and Wilcove are worth a try over the neap tides. Hopefully as we move into November we should start to see the larger pouts and whiting along with a few cod reports. In addition to a lack of activity on the Cod the same could also be said for eels as this is usually prime time in the Tamar for catching a decent eel. Although they are still quite thin on the ground I am hearing of the first reports of flounder coming from the River Teign and this hopefully bodes well for the National Flounder Championships taking place on the river over the weekend of the 11th and 12th November. Peeler crab will be in short supply during this weekend so make sure you get your crab orders in early. Kingsbridge should start to fish by the end of November and I’m looking forward to getting up there and shooting a video/article with Andy Webb as part of his Sea Angling Adventures series. Let’s hope for some dry settled weather during November and December. On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 tell me that a very successful shark season with fish up to 150lb has now come to an end and he is now focussing on the wrecks and reefs for large Pollack, Ling and Cod. The reefs also continue to provide good sport with Black Bream, Spurdogs and Huss. There is no report from Size Matters as she has returned to Liverpool for the winter season. That’s fit for me for this month – I need to recover after spending a weekend battling storm Brian for not very much. Happy Dipping!

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand great condition this year, compared to last year’s skinnier fish. We have just started seeing the odd double arriving and I am sure once the whiting show up, the bigger fish will be amongst them!

Mother Nature has her say across the UK. As you may be aware due to the trees being down in your garden or maybe the shed roof now belonging to your neighbour, it has been a windy one. Due to our prevailing wind coming from the south west, Chesil has been unfishable for most of the last 30 days. I have only managed a few quick sessions myself after work hoping for a Bass or two and the wind & rain haven’t made it a relaxing or much of an enjoyable experience either. Though I have seen a fair few fish being landed along the shingle bank and it’s common knowledge that Chesil does fish better after a big blow with some colour in the water. So the little windows we have been given have in fact fished ok, but unfortunately for me they haven’t fallen around my work pattern.

This next Month The next month should be blessed with the appearance of Whiting. Chesil has seen some cracking Whiting in its time. For many anglers, myself included, this is used as an exciting rule that the bait fish turn up there is generally a better stamp of Cod with them. The Conger fishing also tends to pick up with a chance of some big girls if you are willing to put some time in around the Ferrybridge/Cove end.

Target species for this next month This last month has seen the first run of Codling and the Bream fishing has just been unbelievable this year with some anglers landing over 25 in a session. Many anglers are now describing these target species as a pest, mainly because they are taking 5/0 hooks baited with Black lug for the Cod. The Codling have been in

Summary Due to the weather this month it has been hard for many the last few weeks, but as you can see from some of the photos sent in, if you put the hours in the fish can be there for you. Thanks again for sending in your photos and catch reports, we couldn’t do this without your support.

BEXHILL FESTIVAL OF THE SEA - RESULTS 3rd Mark Rogers 30cm Glyn and Kevin Morgan both landed another Bass each both of which were 58cm. I have attached a photo of Glyn Morgan with his 80cm Bass and can confirm that all the Bass caught were released safely.

GENERAL Ricky Diamond float fished at Langney Point recently during a calm spell, and using 8lb line managed to catch a nice 5lb 7oz bass on light tackle. He said the fish put up a great fight on light gear and then the bass was returned alive !! Peter Cornwall caught a nice 6lb 5 ½ oz bass along Eastbourne seafront a couple of weeks ago, Peter used live whiting at close range to tempt the bass. Tom Strudwick caught a nice 1lb 8oz plaice in Pevensey Bay in early October and there have been reports of plaice caught in Eastbourne and on Seaford beaches during late September and through October. There are still some nice sole about as well as some nice bass and plenty of whiting at night!! But we have still been seeing mackerel and garfish both at Langney and Seaford. The boat fishing has been hit and miss, largely because of the changing weather. When the boats have been able to launch some good fish have been caught!! Such as plaice , bass as well as Turbot, conger and rays.

Mid week winter trips from October Monday - Friday £45 indivdual and £450 charter

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins As I write this report the 1st of the autumn gales have hit Poole Harbour, it is very exhilarating to watch the ferocity of the winds and the white crested waves rolling down the harbour but it is not what a charter skipper wants to see. Up to now the inshore boat fishing has been superb with excellent catches of Plaice along Bournemouth and Southbourne areas some reaching the 4lb class along with some late Mackeral and plenty of Garfish. During a local boat trip Poole Dolphins were treated to a Bream bonanza with good size Bream up to 2lb 12ozs coming aboard all day and as a bonus Eddie Taylor caught his 1st Trigger Fish of the season. Poole Harbour continues to produce Plaice in quantity and quality along with a few Gilthead Bream. Flounders have started to be landed in the upper tributaries and mudflats of the harbour although not big yet but a good start. The Swanage and Purbeck marks on the weaker tides are yielding some big Rays, Tope and Congers along with Bream from the Kimmeridge area. Wreck fishing at anchor is producing fantastic sport with Bream being the main quarry, Ian Napier landed his best Bream of the year at 5lb 4ozs along with several in the

4lb class and in total 5 bream over 5lb were caught, weighed and released by the crew of which several suffered bite offs courtesy of a hungry shark, as the tide eased plenty of Tope action took place. Good size Bass are still being caught up to 10lb and as a bonus those fishing on board Random Harvest were treated to a surprize Porbeagle Shark of around 60lb being landed. Not to be out done local angler Keith Trim fishing a club fishing comp landed a small Octopus in less than 20ft of water. The annual skippers competition between Our Gemma and Random Harvest to catch the 1st Cod of the winter has been won by Mervyn Mimms on Our Gemma with a Cod of 15lb 8ozs landed by local angler Philip Butler. The next few months fishing will be predominantly aimed at Cod and Whiting fishing with many boats heading towards the Isle of Wight in search of those big winter Cod Poole Sea Angling Centre are running 2 x Winter Cod comps on 19th November 2017 and 17th December 2017 for more details please contact Andy on 01202676597

POOLE

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

Top trip for last month was certainly our final trip over to Alderney for the year. I’ve always liked going across the channel this late in the season, providing you can get a bit of favourable weather, the fishing is never disappointing. Day one saw a decent enough session at anchor on a wreck for congers and bream, unfortunately no ling this time around which was disappointing as we had plenty the week before. Day Two started off with Bob Hall’s couches bream double header, the most we have ever had on the whole boat for the day is 2 so this was something special. The catches continued throughout the day however and we ended up with 19 couches coming to the net, including ten for Ian Napier who was just hoping to catch his first one on this trip. Plenty of hard fighting black bream of varying sizes were caught by all throughout the day mostly returned for next year. A manic session on the anchor saw tope up to 50lb, bull huss, more bream and even a bonus plaice (only the second one I’ve ever seen in Alderney). Day Three started off with a few hours on the banks which produced half a dozen flats, tub gurnards and cuttlefish, nothing massive but we have had worse days than that this year.

Then off to anchor up a big rock mark which was very productive with huss, bream, congers and plenty more big tope. To round the day off we did an hours breaming back by the island, a slow start turned into a frantic half an hour with the bream taking anything you put down there. Average size was way up on the previous day at around 3lb. Bob Hall had the last say of the day with a couches bream and black bream double this time. Day four and the weather unfortunately turned for the worst and we were faced with a small neap tide against 20 knots of westerly. The prospect of swinging round and round the anchor rope all day didn’t appeal so we headed back across to Poole Bay to finish the trip up in calmer waters. Out of only a handful of mackerel the lads managed 6 small eyed rays, 1 undulate, 2 smoothounds and would you believe it a 15lb 4oz turbot!?!?! All the time we have spent steaming around looking for those flatfish far and wide and we catch the biggest one of the year right on our doorstep. That’s going to be a tough trip to beat. We are now taking bookings for Alderney 2018 so drop us an email for a list of dates. info@silverspraycharters.com

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club October in the eastern Solent area is often a cross-over month between the summer species and the arrival of winter cod and whiting. This year the summer species have stayed around well into the month with good catches of plaice, some bream plus garfish and scad still taking baits or feathers off the bottom. Conger are roaming the rough ground away from their summer haunts of wrecks and rocks, and can provide energetic sport or be a nuisance to those targeting cod, depending on your point of view. A good autumn conger on open ground can run like a tope and put up a very good fight. On the subject of cod, we have seen a limited run of autumn fish with the luckier boats having four or five to about 15lbs, mainly reported from Solent marks. The first few whiting have appeared but not in the numbers we expect later. We usually see a few trigger fish on the rocky marks at this time of year, and some nice fish have been caught this month. Bass fishing has been excellent with the inshore shoal fish being larger each year and giving good sport on light spinning tackle. The bigger fish tend to be hanging well below the smaller fish which will often grab a lure on the surface. Further offshore there have been good catches of bass to 6lb on the better days, although only one fish of over 42cm per angler per day can be retained. On 8th October the interclub boat competition between Southsea Marina, Langstone Harbour, Eastney and Southsea Sea Angling Clubs was held with 39 individuals entering on their own boats or from charters. The competition for best specimen fish was won by Ray Plomer fishing from his own boat Ruthless with an undulate ray of 13lb 15oz. Catches were generally disappointing on the day but Mark Banks brought back a bull huss of 11lbs and Tim Andrews a ling of around 20lb. Heber Crawford started late and stayed in the harbour, but nev-

ertheless winkled out several very nice wrasse the largest 4lb 1oz. Notable fish reported this month included a monster bass of 16lb 4oz caught by Les Chant from a Langstone charter boat. Bait was apparently carp boilies. This has aroused much interest from other anglers as this might be an alternative to the very high prices being charged for our staple cod bait, frozen squid! Pete Kilshaw of the ECA caught a twaite shad of 1lb 8oz which was quickly released because these are protected species. Mark Argyle also of ECA caught a nice bass of 9lb. Catches from Southsea Marina Angling Club included a trigger fish of 2lb 1oz caught by Tony Skinner and in the junior section, an undulate ray of 14lb to Jake Kelly (pictured). Heber Crawford is way in the lead in the species competition, with 52 to date.

The next competition will be the Southsea Marina Angling Club Open Cod Competition scheduled for 3rd December, with reserve dates of 10th and 17th December if the weather is unfavourable. First prize for the largest cod is £500 plus a prize table. Entry is £10 – for further details contact Steve Kelly at Southsea Marina on 02392 822719.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, November 2017

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

It’s been a very productive autumn for anglers along the North Devon Coast with a wide variety of species being caught to suit all anglers. The stormy interludes have coloured the water favouring the bait fisher over the lure fisher. Smoothound have been caught in good numbers from rock marks with several double figure specimens caught the best a fine specimen of 13lb 1oz to the rod of Ali Laird. Smoothound seem to be lingering longer each year with specimens landed right up until Christmas and beyond. I have not heard of any tope caught yet but expect to hear of the first of the autumn within the next few weeks. Several small-eyed ray have fallen to anglers fishing from beaches for bass and from the pier at Ilfracombe. Ilfracombe Pier has also produced several red mullet and sole to anglers fishing with worm baits, Big bass can come from a wide variety of marks and it will be a rare autumn if a lucky angler in the right place at the right time doesn’t land a big double. Bass have given good sport to boat anglers with John Barbeary’s ‘Bluefin’ leading catches out of Ilfracombe.

Bass have been tempted fishing over reefs with lures proving successful. The estuary flounder fishing has got off to a slow start with large numbers of bait robbing crabs and finger bass stripping worms from the hooks within minutes. Mark Hancock won Triple Hook Clubs first flounder Open of the season with a flounder scaling 1lb 43/4oz. In runner up spot was Dave Mock with a flounder of 1lb 1oz and in third Dennis Toleman with a flounder of 151/2oz. Nathan Clements landed a fine Taw flounder of 1lb 14oz.

Ollie Passmore -thin lipped grey mullet - 4lb 1oz

Anglers prepared to use a degree of finesse in their fishing have tempted several specimen grey mullet. Graham Snow secured the top two places in Bideford Angling Clubs 24 hour Rover landing a fine brace of thick-lipped mullet scaling 5lb 43/4oz and 5lb 33/4oz. Thin lipped grey mullet have also been tempted from the estuary by anglers fishing beyond what has previously been considered the season to fish. The last month has been a bit challenging again with most weekends being either big springs or neap tides which seem to coincide with a fair wind but when conditions have allowed then there is normally a club boat bobbing about in the bay. The first codling and plenty of whiting albeit a bit on the small side have been landed and hopefully as the month continues and temperatures drop their numbers and size will increase. I think we have seen the last of the hounds in the bay for 2017 but you could still pick one up if you steamed down towards Porlock.

Sunday 15th October the wind was from the south allowing us to go ahead with the Tony Holly Trophy. Despite an early book in

Although there was plenty of fish caught most failed to meet our high minimum sizes so only a single lsd made it back to the scales caught by Dave Tether at 1-13 and 60% and enough to win the trophy. There were reports of a few conger to 25lb lost at the side of the boat and Craig Willis did catch the first codling but it was just under our 18 minimum size. Fish of the month for September, sponsered by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge, was a 12lb huss for Andy Georgiou and a new club record. The next club competition is the Wilf Dunstone Trophy on Sunday 19th November. NEWS / WATCHET

THE SEA ANGLING DIARY PROJECT The Sea Angling Diary Project is enlisting sea anglers from across the UK to help improve the marine environment through better management of fish stocks and demonstrate the impact of sea angling on the country. With over 1,300 anglers already providing information through a bespoke, free online diary, the project is seeking to significantly expand numbers to improve the quality of information. Anglers of all abilities are being asked to sign up - whether you’re a time served, year-round dedicated sea angler or you fish in the sea occasionally, maybe on holiday. You can join the study by completing a short survey here: www.seaangling.org The project, which began life as Sea Angling 2016 is now running through to at least the end of 2018 has been re-named the Sea Angling Diary Project. Information gathered will be used to calculate the numbers of people fishing and where and how often they do it; and the economic value of sea angling to the UK economy. Crucially it will show what is caught and where – and the proportions of fish returned as well as kept - to show the real impact of angling on the environment.

commissioned by the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). It is carried out by research company Substance, who have undertaken a wealth of research to show the impact of angling and support its development in the last decade (www.resources.anglingresearch.org.uk). Dr Adam Brown from Substance said: ‘It is vital that we know more about sea angling in the UK so that it is properly represented. It is hugely important to get accurate data to support sea angling development, improve fish stocks and demonstrate its economic value. The more people that take part in our exciting Sea Angling Diary project, the better that data will be.’ Dr Kieran Hyder (Cefas) said, ‘It is really important that sea anglers contribute to this survey, as it will help build the evidence needed to improve our ability to conserve fish stocks. The survey aims to collect data that is as accurate as possible about what is caught, released and spent by sea anglers in the UK. This will help enable the sea angling community to demonstrate its real impact more effectively.’ Information collected will be published and provided to European, national and local policy makers to make better informed decisions on fisheries management, as well as provided to the sea angling community with information to enable them to develop their own views and policies. Results from 2016 are due in November.

BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Again a great month here in Minehead. Charter boats returning good mixed bags from many favoured marks. To the west around Porlock bay whiting have shown in good numbers with many fish in the two pound bracket, also one or two haddock, pout and poor cod to add to the variety. The arrival of these species has spurred the conger into action as they make the most of this seasonal bounty. Also good numbers of large huss apparently joining in on the action with many fish around the fifteen pound mark. Both the conger and the huss will now pack on weight to see them through the winter months. With the nights drawing in now we were hoping to see a fair number of cod starting to show but as yet, the numbers have been relatively low though occasional fish to double figures have been s years Alykat weight challenge was again a

great success though the weather did its utmost to scupper the whole event. Regular Alykat anglers went head to head to make this comp as popular as it is. Top angler Mick Arrowsmith lead the way with some good weights each day until veteran Malc Bayldon battled his way to a photo finish beating Mick by just five and a half pounds to take this years title. This win makes it a grand slam for Malcolm who has now won all of the Alykat individual challenges. Steve Chillcott showed that it can pay off to fish just a single day by taking second prize of heaviest fish with his 27lb eel. Mick Arrowsmith finished third with heaviest aggregate weight. My thanks to all competitors for showing great determination and camaraderie in the face of some pretty horrendous conditions!

BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle

Historic Harbour-side Venue

Bull Huss have continued to show up in catches this past month. The area west of Minehead around the Bossington and Porlock and into the North Devon boarder is the most consistent. A juicy fish bait should do the trick. Matt Werbitzky (aka Biscuit ) found himself a couple of double figure Huss recently.

The bass fishing has been half tidy the past month with many bass reported. The main stay of catches has been around the 4~5lb mark with a few better samples around the 6~8lb mark. As we move into late autumn the numbers will drop away but the chance of A big double is A serious realistic target especially along the reef. Mike Seatherton caught this fine bass recently from a high water mark at St Audries.

The channel seems to have been crawling with congers this autumn as normal. There’s been loads of straps from a few lb into mid to high doubles. The 20lb plus congers have seemed scarce so far. May be it’s the coming months that will produce them as they munch through the tonnes of whiting that are present. Mike Seatherton caught this chunky conger recently from a high water mark recently.

The autumn small eyed ray fishing has been excellent this year. In fact the whole year has been good with a much better average size of rays being on the sand banks between Minehead and Hurlstone point. Sandeel , launce and squid baits being the key. With a major shortage of sandeels it’s going to be the wise anglers who Squirrelled a few packs away for the remainder of the autumn who stand the best chance of temping those plump specimen size small eyed that seem to always show up in late autumn and early winter. West Coast and Watchet sac anglers Mark Mossman and Steve Liddell have both found a good stamp of small eyed rays recently from Minehead.

The last few expected Smoothounds have been popping up here and there the past month. Nothing massive but a few doubles did show up around Minehead, Bossington, Porlock and into North Devon. Minehead Angler James "the magic torch" Thomas sneaked this one out from the gas works at Minehead Harbour this past month. There’s still time for a late one somewhere, but they aren’t a realistic target species now. I’m struggling to find something positive about the codling this month as it’s not been the best early autumn run we’ve seen. But I’m not one to be negative about it . The fact about it is. The codling are about at the moment, your not going to catch a bucket load, but catching one or two is possibly if you select the right tides and weather conditions. Local knowledge is key if you are visiting an area you don’t normally fish. Plus there’s always that chance of smashing your personal best . Especially as the winter nights draw in. The codling are around 1~2lb with a few 3~4lbers and with the Mineahead boats reporting a few 8~12lbers the winter coding to come should be ok. Weston Angler Bert Ford proved there’s a nice stamp about with this 6lb8oz fish caught this past month from his secret mark on the mod part of sand point at Weston.

The Sole fishing has been its usual hot and cold self the past month. This time of year normally heralds the bigger stamp of sort after 2~3lbers if not bigger. The upper channel marks have been producing the goods for a number of anglers. The noted hot spots at Minehead however haven’t seen much attention the last few of years so things may have recovered and A few exceptional fish could possibly be lurking on the infamous Butlin’s beach. Bristol Angler Steve Ace recently caught this 2lb 4oz Sole from the upper channel. The Sole was part of an impressive 90lb haul made up of rays and congers.

By John Skeggs With winter just around the corner, most anglers are looking for their first Cod of the season. (No reports of any aboard “Last Laugh” yet). Each season, it seems the first ones show in the Solent and gradually spread to the Needles area. Some dedicated anglers ,are all ready on the leader board, bagging fish around 6lb -11lb. The weed is still heavy at times, most of it collects on the weight, leaving the bait clear .It is much more manageable on the

smaller tides and should thin out in the coming weeks, South of the light, the signs are good, with the odd Whiting in the gulley and plenty of strap congers. Skate seem to be ever plentiful with Thorneback Rays, Undulates and Blonde Ray being caught. Bass have provided anglers with good sport on the floats, both livebaits and lures. The next two months should see some big fish coming aboard.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage We have just started to see the first Cod appear in the East and West Solent and Christchurch bay. At this point in time the Solent has a real problem with weed but should start to ease as the tides cut back. so we should have a good couple of months to look forward to. The summer fish are still here in the West Wight area with Mackerel Scad and a good show of Garfish, plus Bream Bull Huss Bass and Tope, its also a bonus to see the winter fish turning up with lots of small Conger around three to five pound plus a few into double figures a scattering of Channel

Whiting and our first Cod of the season from Freshwater Bay so lets hope we get some settled weather for this years Cod season. Just a reminder of the date for the 2017 British Cod Championships. WEYMOUTH

Port Report For many of you anglers, October has been a disaster! Strong winds persist preventing all but the hardiest from going to sea. We skippers in Weymouth were very fortunate that the Weymouth International Boat Angling (WIBAC) Competition took place in the first full week of the month. The shelter afforded by Portland, the Portland Breakwaters and the various positions offered by local headlands make it highly likely that events such as this can go ahead whatever the weather. Results of the event were very impressive underlining what we have been saying all year that the inshore fishing is excellent whereas the offshore wrecking since May has been very difficult. However much we try to delude ourselves, there are many sea anglers who justify their day afloat by how much quality fish they take home. We constantly try to promote the concept of angling as a sport and that it’s great to have a day at sea with one’s friends with fish ‘as a bonus’. This year, however, even on nice calm days, it has been difficult to persuade angling groups to stay inshore and enjoy the fish that are available rather than hammering out to non-productive wrecks in search of cod that aren’t there. The WIBAC produced amazing ray fishing on ‘Ray Day’ with all boats seeing upwards of 40 rays. The bonus was that a fair number of turbot and brill were also caught. This is outstanding fishing but it requires 30lb to 50lb class gear and up to 3lb lead when the tide is running hard. Many anglers do not see any fun in this sort of angling whereas the WIBAC competitors take it in their stride and see it as part of the week’s variety of challenges. Those who are experienced in fishing such fast flowing areas such as the Bristol Channel come armed with Uptiding gear and can fish throughout the tide with 10oz longnosed grip leads with ease as opposed to downtiding with 3lb lead. On the Species Day (One of each species allowed) the top anglers were up to 14 species each with the winner catching 15 species which is a very impressive total within the confines of a 6 hour event. The Shambles and other Banks this year have been mainly good and sometimes phenomenal. Facebook followers will see that even porbeagle shark have been hooked on the ray gear/turbot tackle and released at the side of the boat. Brill, turbot, smalleyed, spotted, blondes, undulates and thornback have as been regularly included in the Bank anchoring sessions along with tope, smoothounds and an occasional bass or pollack. Well, what’s not to enjoy?? Surely this is better than fruitlessly drifting over and over a barren wreck??

However, if on an anchoring session then a well prepared cod set-up and big baits can bring results. Go for the pennel rig; stick 4 to 6 whole Kalamari squids on a T- Bait shaped rig; add in a revolving plaice spoon above the pennel and up the traceline to 30lb-40lb. Go for it!

As November progresses there may be pollack returning to the wrecks. It would be fascinating to know where they have gone this year and if indeed they will return before next Spring. We often refer to sea fishing as a complete mystery…well, this year it really is! On November 12th I will take out my final trip aboard Offshore Rebel. I have been very fortunate to have really enjoyed my working life as an angling charter boat skipper and have had endless laughs, good times and adventures. I thank the many of you who have fished aboard my Offshore Rebel boats; the first Offshore Rebel being launched in 1987, and on my previous vessels, Purbeck Star and Vanishing Trick. It’s been a really great adventure and I genuinely thank you for your custom and friendship over what has been 60 years. “60 years,” I hear you squeak…..yep, you may remember that little sprat of a lad crewing aboard Vic Pitman’s Valerie Ann as a nipper…well, that was either me or Andy Sergeant who is currently Weymouth’s resident RNLI Coxswain, trying to untangle you or bait you up. I’ll still be around the harbour and maybe even surprise you as a guest skipper when one of my colleagues needs a day off….who knows? Thank you all for coming to Weymouth and to the many of you who have supported our wonderful port for many years. I am currently saying my fond farewells to customers who have fished regularly with me for over 30 years….that’s the level of long lasting support we have been fortunate enough to enjoy in sunny Weymouth. And, at this point, allow me to wish Jamie Pullin all the very best as the new owner/skipper of Offshore Rebel as from November 14th. Jamie (known as Jay) brings much needed youth and strength to the vocation as well as enthusiasm and an all-important thirst for continuing and developing the Rebel Adventure. Good Luck for the rest of the year and let’s really hope that next year is considerably less challenging!!

What will November bring? This year bream have been a very important mainstay species both this side of the channel and around the Channel Islands. They often stay around until the last storms of October or first hard blow of November. With everything so amazingly unpredictable this year, maybe the bream will stay longer. Bream - Fish On II November has become a prime month for bassing. There remains a resistance to fish for bass as a ‘trophy fish’ as anglers want to take fish home and the One Fish Limit continues to hurt the Charter Boat Industry. Yes, there are a few anglers who will try for a Personal Best but it is more likely that the Weymouth boats offer bass fishing as a part of a varied day. In November there will still be turbot, brill and rays about and they will be (they are already) be joined by whiting. The whiting fishing from the Dorset Ports has always been very good in the November to January period and there is a chance of a cod. Right now (mid October) , Chesil Beach shore anglers are catching cod whereas we rarely do when boat fishing at anchor. More success is achieved on the drift with the Portland Race area and marks to the west of Portland offering the best chance of success.

NEWS

ENGLAND’S BIG GAME TEAM FINISH 15TH PLACE IN THE FIPS-M WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS This year’s FIPS-M 26th World Championship Big Game Trolling was fished in the beautiful azure blue waters of the Algarve at Albufeira, Portugal from 16th to 23rd September with an increased number of teams involved this year and the competition being more competitive than ever. Due to the unpredictable weather pushing through around Portugal and into Morocco the water temperatures were unnaturally cold for the time of the year. Early practice for Team England showed the water temps around 69 to 70 degrees, too low for any great numbers of bill fish to be within the area and bites very hard to come by. England managed to find small pockets of warmer water within 20 miles of shore, but these were ever changing and it meant that the fishing was exceptionally slow. Day one of the tournament was due to be a practice day for all teams after the opening ceremonies and unfortunately the winds had picked up and the organisers decided the conditions were too bad for practice. Day one of the competition was fraught with issues with teams being undecided as to where to fish due to the lack of practice with the additional problem of the bait provided being frozen and unsuitable for use, meaning that all teams would be pulling lures instead on the opening day. Team England’s designated boat had suffered a blown turbo and so they had to be put on a replacement spare boat. To make it harder they only managed 30 minutes before their replacement boat suffered a mechanical failure along with two other boats, meaning that they were forced to return back into harbour and await one of the other spare boats. Team England was joined by the South African team and Italian A team who had all suffered similar issues. To add further to their problems after boarding the second boat it suffered a steering pump failure a further nine miles off shore and the boat was once again forced to return to harbour for Team England’s third boat of the trip. Unfortunately by this time they had lost over three hours of fishing time and with the fish being approximately 50 miles offshore it meant they were unable to even reach the fishing grounds before being forced to return skunked for the day. There woes were similar to many of the other teams

with only 8 teams recording a fish, meaning that England scored the maximum allocated points for the day. Day two was an improvement with calmer weather and higher expectations from all teams, unfortunately the rules dictate that only one rod is allowed per angler and with only two anglers fishing Andy Atkins and Jack Challis representing Team England it meant that England were at a distinct disadvantage. They did however manage to raise two white marlin and lost one just before a legal release due to the barbless hook dislodging at the boat. Again 16 boats failed to find fish due to the difficulty in locating the few marlin that were present and several recorded lost fish in a similar vain to Team England. Day 3 was England’s strongest boat and once again they travelled 50 miles out to find fish, a group of circling birds indicated that there were dorado and other predators in the area and so they scaled down their hooks and managed to land 11 dorado for 55 points which was worth more than two white marlin and lead them to finish sixth on the day. The challenge proved to be recording the releases in a legal manner as no other person is allowed to be involved in any part of the hooking, leading, releasing or recording of the fish and England managed to successfully document all 11 fish between the two of them. Andy Atkins, England Big Game Manager stated “England’s final position of 15th overall placed them above some of the best four man big game fishing teams in the world and had we had one fish on either of the other two days a top six finish would have been achievable. All in all it was an excellent tournament and great fun was had by all. We proved we can hold our own against some of the best state sponsored professional teams and next year with a full contingent of four anglers and we hope to be able to achieve a top five finish.” Top 6 results; 1st Angola (Team A) 2nd Portugal (Team B) 3rd Spain (Team B) 4th Angola (Team B) 5th Croatia (Team A) 15th England

ANGLING TRUST BOAT SQUAD WEEKEND

This years’ annual Angling Trust Boat Squad weekend held on 14th/15th October saw a mixture of current England team anglers, Plus potential new recruits gather in Weymouth to be put through their paces ahead of the Selection of the England International World and Home Nations Boat Teams for 2018. Under the guidance of Team Managers Neil Bryant (Worlds) and Steve Batchelor (Homes Nations), plus selectors Ray Ashby and Brian Owen (Chairman of the Selection Committee), the 2018 hopefuls were put through their paces during two days of intensive training.

The training included advice on bait preparation, casting, traces, team building and a competitive Team challenge event took place on the final day. Although the weather restricted the fishing area on both days around 18 species were caught and returned. At the post event de brief all agreed that the weekend was a great success and hopefully this will provide a springboard for England Team success in 2018. If anyone wants to fish for Team England and attend future events like these please complete the England applications forms which are available on the Angling Trust website at; England Marine Application Forms for 2018 selection and remember to return by the closing date.

LDSFC RESULTS OF LARGE BOAT COMPETITION 24 September 2017 Nine club members enjoyed the late September sunshine Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage, on their monthly large boat competition. With the strong tide it was decided to fish a rocky mark in Christchurch Bay until the tide slackened enough to go off the Needles. The first mark produced mainly pout and bull huss, plus a smoothhound. The second stop produced similar species with strap congers and a whiting and an undersized spotted ray. Alec Harmer managed to catch the only sizeable conger to give him some much needed points. Weed and underwater snags started to become a problem as the ebb tide picked up, so the decision was made to fish a gully nearer the Needles in the hope of an early cod. Unfortunately, cod - and fish in general - proved elusive in the final hour. Although a lot of fish were caught during the day, many of the species were undersized and this was reflected in the low scores. 1st Brian Dawkins 49 points; 2nd Alec Harmer 42 points; 3rd Derek Smith 38 points; 4th Pete Drodge 33 points; 5th Malcolm Gerrish 32 points; 6th Jane Hopkins 32 points (lesser number of fish); 7th Harry Gray 20 points; 8th Roland Blomfield 9 points; 9th Anton Emblen 8 points. Brian Dawkins also won the RNLI Challenge Cup, awarded to the winner of a nominated competition.

LDSFC Malcolm Stote wins but Paul Watson takes the spoils. On Wednesday evening the 4th October Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held an Adult Win-Sum League fishing competition at Steamer Point. The weather for the evening was dry but rather breezey. 10 club members signed on and 8 weighed in fish consisting of pouting, eel, flounder, conger eel and smoothhound. The jammiest angler of the evening was Paul Watson who bagged the only flat fish on his first cast and then did the double by catching the longest round fish at the end of the competition. The best longest flat fish was a flounder of 38cm caught by Paul Watson. The best longest round fish was a conger eel of 87cm caught by Paul Watson. Rersults: 1st Malcolm Stote 316pts. 2nd Paul Watson 250pts. 3rd Garry Mann 207pts. 4th Terry Kempton 195pts. 5th Gavin Sloper 188pts. 6th Paul Dibden 171pts. 7th Chris Ellis 46pts. 8th Colin Saunders 38pts. RESULTS Osprey Open 2017

SLO Round 9

75 anglers, including 4 Ladies and 3 Juniors (all boys) turned out to support the club for which the Osprey club members are very grateful and the organisers thank them one and all. 42 anglers, including 1 Junior weighed in 18 Flounder, more than the last 2 years, 2 Dabs and 35 Lesser Spotted Dogfish, with many other dogs caught; again a relative dog fest. Other fish such as 5 Beard Rockling were caught, both undersize and smaller but not weighed in, as the anglers either realised they were on the small side or, if their pair’s partner had not caught, then they were out in that category, as both anglers had to weigh in for their score to count.

The SLO had it's ninth competition at Chesil sponsored by Weymouth Angling centre on Saturday the 14th of October 2017 from 11am until 4pm. 54 anglers fished in 3 zones with 42 anglers weighing in. The sizeable fish consisted of 215 Garfish,1 Turbot, 2 Herring,11 Whiting, 2 Thick lip mullet, 26 Plaice, 1 Dab, 5 Pout, 15 LSD,3 Sole, 10 Scad, 1 Red Gurnard, 6 Conger and 3 Tub Gurnard a total of 365 fish were caught. The Winner of the match was Jeff Fisk from Bournemouth with 21lb 7oz from peg 8 consisting of a 42 Garfish and 7 topups. Second place was Saul Page from Deal on peg 40 with 16lb 9oz consisting of 24 Gars a whiting and 2 congers. Third place was Daz Newland from IOW on peg 47 with 10lb 12oz. Penn points on weight will be awarded to Jeff Fisk,Saul Page and Daz Newl. Heaviest round was Dave Lane with his 4lb 4oz Conger and Rob Marshalls 4lb 14oz Turbot heaviest flat. Sunday 8th October 2017, once again, as in all recent years, saw the weather gods in benevolent mood, for this was the day that the Osprey Sea Angling Club, based in Pembroke Dock, held its annual open beach fishing competition or flatfish festival to give it its other more descriptive name. Again, this year, the fish turned up, no Golden Greys, only a few Flounders but loads of dogs, many more than in previous years. Conditions did look good from the off with a gentle breeze and a small surf running just enough to give coloured water on a sunny autumn day.

The winner, once again, was a local angler from Milford Haven, but not, this year, an Osprey member, Shane Tucker, a great supporter and sponsor of these Open events, with 2 Flounder for 820gms. Second, from Swansea, was Nicky Bevan, with a Lesser Spotted Dogfish of 940gms just nudging out last year’s winner Osprey member Haydn Cole by 20gms out of the heaviest fish of the day for which second prize was up for grabs. Third place was another Milford local and good supporter, Andrew Rogers, with 2 Flounder for 670gms. He also never fails to bring raffle prizes with him for which we are always eternally grateful and thank him very much for his support. Top Junior, was Kullen Evans with a Lesser Spotted Dogfish of 750gms. The pair’s competition was won by Shane and his son Daniel with a bag of 2Kg 045gms. In second, were last year’s winners, Haydn and Mark Bennett with 1Kg 990gms and third, once again this year as last year, were Kevin Shortman and John Whatley with 1Kg 985gms, only 5gms less! The Stewards draw was also won by Shane Tucker, when your luck’s your luck is in and we thank all the stewards for their help in signing in fish on the beach. Provisional dates for your diaries are 14th January for the Air Ambulance open and 18th February for an open match to support the local RNLI. Finally, thanks must go to Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn for accommodating us, providing the bottle for the stewards draw, to club members and others that helped on the day and also to our sponsors who donated cash and raffle prizes to further help support the club. These were, in no particular order, Shane Tucker, James Lemon of Awesome Fishing, Martin and Sandra Thompson of Anglers Corner in Milford Haven, Mark Bennett, Steve Parry, Leigh and Andrew Rogers.

Some of the winners and sponsors, pictured (left to right) are, Kevin Shortman, John Whatley, James Lemon of Awesome Fishing, Shane Tucker, Daniel Tucker, Andrew Rogers and Haydn Cole.

A short move at slack water was made inshore to a gulley around the Needles in search of an early cod, which although not fruitful did provide some good sport with plenty of early season whiting, the biggest weighing 2lb 2oz caught by Vernon Everett. Overall a very good day given the poor weather forecast.

LDSFC Colin Saunders wins again and is having a good year. On Saturday 7th October Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its 9th Shore competition at Warren Edge, Southboure. The evening was dry with a wind coming from the north west and waves breaking 50 yards offshore. 7 club members signed on and 4 weighed in fish consisting of sole and scad, 8 fish were weighed in for a total weight of 3lb 13-5/8oz. Best round fish was a scad of 4-3/8oz caught by Danny Panks. Best flat fish was a sole of 12-1/8oz caught by Paul Watson. Results: 1st Colin Saunders 1lb 2oz. 2nd Paul Watson 1lb 1-7/8oz. 3rd Terry Kempton 13-3/8oz. 4th Danny Panks 12-3/8oz. Roland Blomfield, Keith Panks and Pete Tomkins all blanked. LDSFC Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club. Recreational boat trip: Last Laugh, Lymington. The Club fished a recreational boat trip aboard Last Laugh (skippered by John Skeggs) on the 15th of October 2017. The initial plan was to head out to the mid channel wrecks to fish for ling given the excellent neap tide. However, as with all the best laid plans it wasn’t to be as the forecast had deteriorated over the preceding days, therefore, a change of plan was agreed and saw John anchoring for rays on a bank several miles off the Isle of Wight. Fishing the early part of the ebb tide initially provided sport for Daniel Rose who was able to christen a new rod and reel with a nice blonde ray. As the tide started to increase, Arran Harmer had a furious bite which when hooked ripped off across the tide and was completely unstoppable. Unfortunately after a few minutes it bit through the line and given the sheer power of the fish it was assumed to be a porbeagle shark. Later the shark was sighted around boat chasing anglers baits across the surface. Being around 8ft long and estimated around 250lb+ it
