It's with great sadness that we have to bring you the news that good friend and angling hero Malcom Bayldon has passed away. I'm sure many of you who had the pleasure to know him will agree with me when I say the guy could fish. Myself along with many others spent countless days afloat with him. Whether it was winter cod bashing or summer
sharking expeditions he was there, always smiling and never giving up even when the conditions were against us he would still be stood there, rod in hand with a big smile on his face. His pb list is something only alot of us could dream of having. He was never afraid to try new things and this often paid off as he was consistently winning competi-
tions or placing highly. But he never hid a secret..... a genuinely humble and generous man. I for one have become a better angler thanks to Malcom and I know I'm not the only one. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Mitch, daughter Stacey and the rest of the family. Fish hard up there my friend but save a few for the rest of us please.....

REPORT FOR THE PORTS OF BRIGHTLINGSEA BRADWELL AND WEST MERSEA By Lee Bollingbroke, skipper of Sophie Lea For us on Sophie Lea its been difficult to keep momentam going and the hot weather has not helped, the start was very good with some beautiful hounds coming to the net from a mark we have been using for several years successfully unfortunately you don’t keep good marks for too long unless your very stealthy and now its not being left alone so we are reluctantly keeping away from this mark let them have it we will find others. We did a test run out to some marks we used to fish twenty years ago well how things change ,admitenly the tides were very small and the anglers were more interested in guzzling drink than fishing but it was deadly quite and I tried several old marks good marks, perhaps it was the heat and tides, but what was interesting
was birds working were they used to and I was buoyed by this sight and it bought back some great memories of the old days we did not stop and try feathers manly because feathers tipsy anglers just don’t go together so I left them in peace, the birds and fish that is. Two weeks later bigger tides and the fishing could not be more different rays bass hounds abound happy anglers again, it can be such a up and down business and we us skippers are only as good as the last trip and the quality of our anglers, so this evening I am doing this report happy that I had good anglers out today some great fishing and get this a twenty pound tip you could have knocked me over with a feather duster.

OBSESSION - BRIXHAM
'The home of Biguns & Whoppers'
By Alan Brown
Many anglers go into a to there local tackle shop and often buy hooks or terminal tackle without any thought, other than its cheap! I’m sure we all have been guilty of it at some point in our life’s. So, we save our self’s 20p or so, on a pack of hooks or swivels, great we think with out thinking on what we are fishing for or bait we will use with the hook, but we have saved 20p or so, after all. That’s great until we have a swivel give out sending a lead straight along the beach among other anglers, must also say at this point that its not always because of a swivel giving out but also bad casting and angling practices. Then there comes that time you have a fish of a lifetime or a new pb fish on only to have a hook pull, due to it being blunt, snap or straighten out on you and worst case your baits masked the hook as wrong hook and size for the job. Now when it comes to it for me and others its not about cost, but quality. I need to
know that the gear I use gives me the best chance of hooking and landing that fish, but there will always be that odd time that a product lets you down be a faulty swivel or hook, that’s a fact of life no matter how much you spend. But the better the quality the less this will happen as with most things you often get that odd bad batch. You need to also look at size of bait and fish you are targeting, no point using a size 4 hook on a large squid bait or a 6/0 on a bream rig for a small worm bait! It’s the same for clips and swivels, no point putting a 30lb class swivel or clip on the rig body when your casting a 170g lead, as I’m sure you be lucky to get more than a few casts before it gives out and who knows where that lead may end up!. So next time you are in your local tackle shop buying terminal gear or hooks, think about it before you buy, as you must think what that 20p or so saving is really going to cost you in the long run?

BRIXHAM REPORT By Kevin Wyatt
Hi guys, what a month we have had on the blue shark, its been fantastic in between the weather with plenty of angry fighting male fish to the side of the boat and 'PB' s being broken by most of our customers,, our 2020 shark Callander is open and filling nicely, and we are seeing blue fin tuna now most days at sea over the sharking grounds which is quite a sight to see. The wrecks are fishing well for bass at the moment with plenty of good fish to be caught, but unfortunately we can still only take one fish per angler under current EU laws,, the skarries sand Banks is still holding good numbers of flat fish and rays, and good huss and eels of the rocky ground, and mackerel seem to be in abundance at the moment, it won't be long before we are
thinking about the pollock returning on the deep water wrecks so don't forget guys to get your self's booked on in advance to avoid disappointment, don't forget obsession is a 40foot offshore procharter with twin 315hp yanmars engine's to give her a top speed of 35 nots with plenty of room for you all, just call our obsession team on 07964 053347, or email www. bigunsandwhoppers.co.uk.... And don't forget our annual torbay festival is coming up, this is not to be missed, big money to be won and thousands of pound of tackle won,.. PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
Writing this month’s report feels a bit like Groundhog Day as I find myself reporting on yet another large bream capture by top Plymouth specimen hunter Rob Wheaton. Not content with recently catching an 8lb gilthead bream, a recent trip to a South Devon Estuary resulted in the capture of an absolutely stunning couches bream of 2-13. This is not only a Rodbenders SAC and Plymouth Federation shore record but also a Wyvern Division record. The fish fell to a peeler crab bait whilst targeting gilthead bream on a mark where Rob had done very well recently with gilts and also bass to 8lb. Well done Rob, an outstanding fish mate. It does seem as though its’ a good year for gilts this year and one man who has been finding some cracking fish is Martin Larkin. Not content with catching a cracking bream of 5lb at the start of this week, ‘Larks’ ventured out again and returned with a beauty of 6-9 which is not only a PB but also a Castaways SAC club record. To catch two 5lb+ gilthead bream is one week takes some doing - top work mate. Although better late than never, the large mackerel shoals have now turned up in the South Devon area and its’ now an ideal time to go out and fill-up the bait freezer although please only take what you need. A recent trip up to Slapton with my lad resulted in about 60 mackerel in only an hour with the fish clearly visible in the surf line. As a result of the arrival of mackerel I have been seeing reports on Facebook on some very good bass being caught. One way to target the bass is a method I have used to great success on Chesil and it involves catching a good few mackerel and then cutting the majority of them into smaller pieces and ground baiting with

them. Doing this just as it gets dark is a great way of fishing for bass. Just make sure you keep your headlight off the water and fish no more than a rod length out. Although it’s getting late in the season some big smoothhounds continue to be caught by those Plymouth anglers making the trips up to the low water reefs on the Bristol Channel. Fishing an inter-club comp with Pot Black SAC, Castaways SAC member Dean Bailey landed a cracker of 16-12 which is one of the biggest I have heard of caught by a Plymouth angler. During the same comp Rob Batten landed a good mullet of 5-2 and special mention should go to junior angler Luke Johns who landed a cracking bullhuss off Beesands which went 7-3. On Size Matters Kev McKie has been finding some good eels when he has been able to get out to the wrecks and bait has been plentiful (this has been an issue for many boats this summer at various times). A recent trip with a group of anglers from South Wales and Bristol resulted in a good number of eels to 50lb along with the odd ling and cod whilst a trip to the inshore reefs with a group of anglers from Peterborough resulted in plenty of pollack to 8lb, bass to 5lb, a few cod and the first john dory of the year. Hopefully this awful weather will break soon to allow the boats to get back offshore as there is nothing worse for the charter skipper in having a diary full of bookings during holiday season and loosing them due to the very unseasonal bad weather. You come to expect it in winter but not in the middle of summer. That’s it from me for this month – I’m off to Majorca for a week to get away from this weather! Happy dipping.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS
Sea Angling News, September 2019
CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers
I think Its now safe to say the mackerel are definitely showing along the whole of the beach in vast shoals. So much so that they are pushing huge bait balls of white bait up onto the shingle. The bream fishing has been fairly steady along the beach but is proving hard going trying to find some of the better size fish. There can be so many small bream at times they can become a nuisance for some anglers trying to target other species such as trigger fish etc. The triggers are finally starting to make an account for themselves as the water temperature starts increase. With all the hot weather recently it was only a matter of time before we had a some bad weather due. The wind turned s/w for a couple of days which resulted in some summer codling making an appearance for
some anglers. Ollie Male hit chesil not long ago which seen him land several bream and some codling. The codling seem to be between the 1-2lb bracket nothing huge by chesils standards but is always a nice surprise when your targeting bream and other bottom feeding fish. Ollie also managed the first trigger fish from the beach this year from what I’ve heard so a very well done mate! If the s/w winds pick up I’m sure we’ll see an increase of summer codling when it settles back down again. When it settles we’ll also see some sole showing at the shallower end of the beach caught on worm baits. Until next month, Tight lines all!

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins
The weather has dominated the area with extremely hot days to very wet and windy but the fishing remained steady with some excellent catches of Mackeral close to the piers, the Plaice have mainly been on the small to medium size but offer good sport for all levels of anglers. Aaron Harmer caught a Couches Bream during a Lymington Club match to romp home as winner on the day and add to this years boat species list. One lucky lady angler whilst fishing for crabs off Poole Quay landed a 1lb + Trigger Fish to her surprize. Local marine security firm Dolphin Marine had their annual fishing trip in far from seasonal conditions strong SE winds and heavy rain which confined them to the harbour were they landed lots
of Gilthead and Black bream, Plaice, Bass and 3 European Eels apart from being very wet the spirits remained high. The Swash Channel is producing plenty of small bait robbing Bream along with a few decent sized Bass. As I sit writing this report the winds are increasing and the outlook for the next few days are not favourable but that is the life of a charter skipper. Looking forward we should see a run of larger Plaice before they depart and offshore the wrecks will produce large Bream, many skippers are offering late season (Sept / Oct) shark trips targeting Threshers and Porgies which are proving very popular with their customers who are seeking new challenges.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
Again I find myself sat in my lounge on a Saturday rather than taking you guys out after the bass or plaice, just seems to be our luck that the wind is always blowing just a little bit too much this year. The fish have definitely been keen to get involved when we have managed to get out. Starting inshore the plaice have been good fun on the spinning rods with fish over the 3lb mark coming every trip, not quite hit 4lb recently but can’t be too far away. This type of drift fishing has been hampered by the weather a lot as a light westerly is best but we seem to always have 15 knots or more to contend with, giving us an unnatural drift speed. Out on the bass grounds the fishing has been brilliant with most of the fish coming to lures. Plenty of small fish in there of about 2lb heading back for next year and a nice one for the table for everyone that wants one. On the smaller tides the tope have provided great sport mixed in with all types of rays, some congers, huss and
even the always welcome bonus turbot. I always try to have a shark rod out on a float whilst tope fishing, all the large mackerel flappers going up and down through the tide sets up a pretty handy chum trail. Last Monday it was it was clearly well worth a go when the first conger up to the boat was bitten in half by something with big teeth. After a few hours knocking out the tope the clicker screamed off on the shark rod and the lads were rewarded with a nice porbeagle of about 6 feet in length, good signs for our upcoming shark trips if we can get the weather. Our last wreck trip of the year turned out to be one of the best for cod with one small wreck producing all the fish. Along with ling and congers at anchor I think good fun was had by all. We are looking forward to finally getting over to Alderney next week as we haven’t managed to get over there since May. 2020 bookings are up to date for Alderney and Guernsey trips so get booking now.

NORTH DEVON REPORT
By Wayne Thomas
Summer seems to be passing by at quite a pace and as I write this those long hot days of mid-summer seem just a distant memory. The spell of rough weather has not been without its benefits however as the discoloured waters have brought better conditions for the bait fisher with several good bass caught. Lure anglers have enjoyed some good sport during more settled spells but big fish have been hard to find. Mullet anglers have enjoyed some good sport with thin lipped mullet succumbing to baited spinners in the estuary and a few good thick lips from the coast and harbours. As we move into September mullet and bass fishing will be at its best with specimens likely to succumb to a variety of tactics.
Several gilt head bream have succumbed to anglers fishing the lower estuary with small crab or lugworm baits. Fly Fishers have enjoyed sport with large numbers of school bass in the lower estuary. I was also delighted to tempt my first golden grey mullet on a small imitative fly pattern. Tope will be on the agenda for the dedicated shore angler with flatfish or fresh mackerel baits likely to succeed from proven marks. Boat anglers can also expect tope and those booking a trip on Ilfracombe Charters could find blue shark from marks far off the coast. Trigger fish could be a feature of catches during late summer and autumn and can be caught from the coast using small crab or fish baits.

LRF REPORT
FLY AND LURE FISHING ON THE JURASSIC COAST By Richard Lyon-Wilson
By Richard Salter
Fishing is good at the moment! Plenty of fish around and many of them are hungry which makes for some exciting fishing for the LRF angler. The Mackerel are about, maybe not as consistently or reliably as some would like but there are generally a few to be had, especially early or late in the day. It’s been a good time for species hunting with plenty of variety to be had if you are prepared to mix things up and try a few different methods depending on what you are targeting and where you’re fishing! The jigs have picked up the Gurnard, Mackerel and Bass from the beaches, with Scad beginning to show now too which is always a good thing. I had a productive session fishing from a breakwater using a Carolina rig, which was really effective at picking up the species out on the cleaner ground that tend to sit fairly tight in the bottom. Just casting out onto the clean ground and slowly working it back along the bottom with the odd twitch seemed to do the trick. Whiting, lots of Black Goby, Sand Goby and some tiny Grey Gurnard were picked up using this method as well as the usual Wrasse and small Pollock over the rougher ground closer in. That particular session ended up producing 12 species, mixing things up with the Carolina rig, dropshotting and jigheads. We also managed to get down to Swanage pier, which is somewhere I’d wanted to fish for a long time. The pier is home to an array of species, but the one we really wanted was a Baillons Wrasse, which is a rare catch in the UK but actually a pretty decent possibility at Swanage. The big challenge is getting a lure past the huge numbers of Pout and Corkwing to try and get to the other species! Dropshotting in tight to the structure was great for picking up the Wrasse
Sea Angling News, September 2019
and mini species whilst flicking a jighead out on the outside found Bass and Sand Smelt. We ended the day with a decent mix of fish with Pout, Corkwing, Ballans, Sand Smelt, Tompots, Pollock, Gobies, Bass and...a couple of Baillons, so it was a successful mission! Pout seem to be everywhere we go at the moment and they are actually a really fun fish to target with LRF tactics. They are pretty aggressive and will happily take a variety of lures. We’ve had them on jigs whilst fishing for things like Gurnard and a variety of soft plastic lures. If there is any size to them, they can actually put up a reasonable fight too. As well as fishing the beaches, harbours and breakwaters of Devon, we’ve also had some enjoyable sessions in the local rockpools. Each pool is different and you never quite know what may be hiding amongst the weed or under a rock. We’ve had plenty of Blennies, small Wrasse, Pollock and Long Spined Sea Scorpions but the real ruler of the roost in the rockpools round here are the Giant Gobies. They are extremely aggressive and usually appear out of nowhere to attack/eat/destroy whatever has dared to pass their patch. They will often dash out from under a rock and attempt to drag whatever they’ve grabbed back home. It’s an exciting moment when a Giant strikes and wrestling a good sized one from under a rock isn’t a battle you’re guaranteed to win! Generally, a split shot rig is the most simple and effective rig when rockpooling, but it can be great fun to drop a lure in on a jighead and see what ambushes it. Although the weather is pretty awful as I look outside, it looks set to improve again from next week, so, hopefully there will be plenty more good fishing to come. Good luck to anyone who manages to get out there. Tight lines all.
This past month has been a mixture of great and very challenging conditions with some of my favorite marks being totally blown out,so moving to other parts of the coastline has been necessary to find more sheltered venues which in turn has made it still possible to catch Bass on the Fly and Lure. A couple of weeks ago i took a guy out to a very well known venue near where he lives for an afternoon and evening guided session. As we approached the cliff edge is where it gets daunting and looking over at the vast area the question was asked do we go left or right or stay on the reef in the middle? This can be very daunting to someone who is new to fishing. It is always a good idea to visit a venue your not familiar with at low water so that you can fully explore the area looking for features such as gully's,rocks etc and remembering them for when the tide floods and it all becomes able to fish.Whilst out there it is always good to look for places you can get escape an incoming tide from so that you do not get cut off and get into trouble. Having safety equipment with you like a phone and life jacket and a mate is also a great idea as you never know what could happen. We managed to cover a lot of coastline where i was able to show him everything he needed to know to have a successful fishing trip and on the way back got him to choose a venue to fish where the water had started to cover a rocky area and after around 20 casts hooks into his first Bass on the lure!not massive but at around 2 lb made his evening and gave him the confidence to venture out in the future. There are still a lot of Mackerel and bait fish about so that just means good sized bass and over the past few years i have found using surface lures the most amazing way to catch these beautiful predators. To see them chasing, competing and
totally smashing the lure and instantly taking line is the biggest buzz ever and anyone who has experienced this will know exactly what i mean. This week i really hope to get out with my fly rod which has to be my preferred way of catching Bass which has been hard to do with poor weather conditions. For this i use an 8 wt rod with a cold saltwater floating fly line,I also recommend a stripping basket which will stop your line getting washed away whilst wading or it getting tangled in weed or rocks when fishing rocky marks. A Bass on the fly hits hard and fast and is a totally different experience than on a lure rod and the initial hard take and the line tightening up is a feeling that is hard to describe!! There are many fly patterns out there from Clouser minnows,Bait fish,Surface poppers, sand eel and my new favorite the Gurgler which is another surface fly, fishing for bass on the fly gives you the opportunity to tie your own flies which gives you the chance to save money and make variations and new creations that will bring you success. I took a client out early in the year and went to a great venue where it is easy to cast a line this resulted in him catching 8 Bass in an hour and a half ,something he had done before and now is fully addicted, the fish were not that big but it was so much fun which is just as important One other thing when fishing especially fly fishing is to wear a pair of polarized glasses so first you can see the fish more easily and more importantly protect your eyes! You do not need to spend a lot and for around £15 you can get a pair that will be all you need. As i mentioned earlier this week and next are looking much more promising than the last few weeks so it is well worth making the effort to get out and get into some decent sized fish

LANGSTONE
LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club The summer in the Eastern Solent is following the usual seasonal pattern of fish movement. We are fortunate to have such a variety through the year, and there are usually some surprises too. The larger tope have mostly now departed, although Rod Barr boated a nice 50lb tope at the end of July. There will be plenty of small pack tope around which can be a nuisance if you are fishing for other species but on light tackle can give good sport. Probably the most noteworthy catch this month was a 47lb stingray to Alan Knight. This is a good fish in its own right, but Alan was actually fishing for bream with light gear and a 15lb hook link baited with squid strip. It came to the boat after a hard 20-minute fight which demonstrated great skill and tenacity from Alan. The larger, breeding black bream have now moved off the rocky marks leaving behind their much smaller brethren who can also make a nuisance of themselves nibbling away at baits and creating false bites. On a slack day you can still have some sport with LRF gear but that isn’t for everyone. There are some gilthead bream around, either on the same rocky marks or more predictably, among the sandy, weedy shallows in the harbours. These are useful additions for species competitions! For most anglers, bottom fishing is the name of the game, usually at anchor but sometimes drifting. Banks and gullies around the eastern Solent approaches produce most of the UK species of ray. Undulate rays are under pressure nationally but we have a good stock in this area. Chris Jewell, Richie Shippen and Jacko Jackson show the rather exotic markings on their undulate rays. When the weather has been unfriendly to
boat fishing, there are always summer mullet in the harbours. You can always tell how windy it has been by the number of mullet caught – not because mullet feed better in the wind but because frustrated boat anglers can’t target anything else! There have been some very good fish reported, Dennis Fuller shows one of 4lb 8oz; Bill Arnold with 5lb 2oz and top of the list Heber Crawford with his personal best of 7lb 6oz topping others up to 5lb 9oz. A lump of bread freelined under moored boats is the preferred method, and the weedier the boat the better the fishing. On to club activities, Southsea Marina Sea Angling Club held their annual summer BBQ which was well attended. This is one of the few SMAC events where the organisers hope for wind, otherwise all the members would be out fishing instead of enjoying the hospitality and buying raffle tickets. As you can see, we had perfect weather conditions – enough wind to persuade anglers to stay ashore, but clear enough for SMAC to hold a good party. Langstone Fishermen’s Association held their annual weekend species competition on 3rd and 4th of August, which is catch and release – only pictures and witness needed. There was an impressive range of species caught, 20 species including the more unusual pipe fish, shore rockling and twaite shad. Competition winner was Bill Arnold with 13 species; joint 2nd with 12 were Steve Jones and Luke Scott. As August rolls into September we may see some trigger fish arriving over rocks and inshore wrecks. Most years we also see a run of September codling, so here’s hoping. Neville Merritt SMAC

BURNHAM ON SEA REPORT
Terry Garrett Blue shark
By Richard Saxby
The last month has been a bit challenging again due to the ever changing weather but there have been a few opportunities to get afloat especially mid week. Most trips have been short ones over high in short weather windows. The fishing has been very good locally with fair numbers of hounds still on some marks just a 15 minute steam from the slip and the odd bass still around. The hounds do seem to be a bit smaller this year locally but the bass fishing has been the best for some years. We have our last junior comp of the year on the August bank holiday weekend so hopefully the weather gods will be kind. September can be a really good month with the possibility of a few winter fish arriving early with the summer species still hanging around giving a bit more variety. I have heard of a few codling showing in the channel already in the 2-2 ½ lb bracket so here's hoping for a better show from them this year. On July 26th new members Jamie and Anne Lock had their first solo session out on Fanny Anne. It's always a bit daunting on your first few trips but one of the benefits of being in a good club is that there is usually help on hand to assist with the launch and retrieve if needed. It was only a short trip over high but Anne managed to find a couple of thornbacks and a hound but Jamie blanked although he did lose a decent fish apparently.
Weather was perfect and the fishing was good the 7 blue sharks to the boat and 4 others dropped. Terry's biggest went 82lb with the best of the day going 92lb. The following day was spent around Lundy species hunting then a session on the tope with plenty coming to the boat up to 30lbs. On the 2-3rd August Jamie and Anne had a couple of short trips over high (don't you guys ever work!). Both times they stayed local and were kept busy with plenty of thornbacks, straps, dogs and a few hounds to Anne. August 4th Seannies Flyer and Ultra White made it out for a short trip over high. There were 3 juniors on Ultra White with Lydia Devey landing a fine hound of 15lbs with Tommy and Cohen Devey landing a steady stream of rays, straps and of course doggies. On Seannies Flyer Pete Watson landed a nice bass of 8lb 4oz. Fish of the month for July sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Stephen Saxby with a hound of 13lb 4oz and 86%. The next club comp is an away day against Brixham Sea Angling Club on the 8th September
27th July Terry Garret joined some friends on Teddy Boy Charters sailing from Ilfracombe for a day in the Celtic deeps.
The next club meeting is on Thursday 19th September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT
By Craig Butler
The past month has seen some of the best bass fishing for many years from many of the beaches throughout the Bristol Channel. Whether it’s been chucking lures in the cleaner water or targeting them with bait in the coloured water in the mid to upper reaches the catches have been very consistent. Arguably, the protection on the bass stock has been having a positive effect and catches reflect this, and not just off the shore, but also the boat. August is a funny old month in the Bristol Channel and tactics need to be adapted to maximise the chances of success. This might be scaling down the hooks sizes and baits or lure fishing. But as far as August has been the fishing has in general been ok. The ray fishing has remained consistent with many small eyed and spotted ray showing in and around Minehead. After dark has been the key to the best of it as the water clarity has been clear and had an effect on the day time fishing. The Smoothound fishing has been a bit patchy as expected for the month, but reasonable catches have been caught in localised pockets. As we move into September we can expect to see the codling moving back along the shore. Potentially we could be in for a treat this autumn as the spring codling run saw some impressive numbers present. With the spring run codling earlier this year being 8-1lb in average, they should hopefully be 1-2lb and fingers crossed they dodged the nets and numbers come back
positive. We could also expect to see a few 3-4lbers along with them. Bait wise, fresh worm baits are the king of baits for these autumn codling and going through a 1lb of fresh lug or rag is a minimum requirement to keep that sent trail going for a four hour session. One thing worth noting. Theses codling often swim and feed very close to the shore line especially on the shallow high water beaches and a cast of 20-40m is more than enough. I’ve witnessed this on so many occasions while on coaching sessions with novice and junior anglers who are dropping baits at these ranges and with this also comes the great opportunity for catching the bass. Careful planning to get the best from the autumn run is wise. Tide size and conditions are important as well as being organised on booking fresh worms at your local tackle shop. It’s foolish to turn up any day of the week at the tackle to expect them available. Tackle and bait shops generally will carry surplus live bait for the walk in angler. But with it being a big financial gamble to hold large quantities that might no sell and then end up being thrown away if the weather doesn’t play ball. So it’s high recommend that fresh worm is booked with your local shop earlier in the week when the shop places the weekends order with its bait diggers and suppliers. Anyway enjoy the month ahead and the opportunities available what ever they may be. Tightlines & happy hunting

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD
BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT REPORT By Tom Wright
Teddie Boy where skipper Michael WebberGriffiths reported the following catches over a weekend... ‘Many small eyed rays to low doubles, a few Blonde rays to mid doubles, Thornback rays, Spotted rays, several Conger Eels to 20lb and a few cracking Bass’... a great weekend of fishing by anyone’s measure.
This time of year can be a fantastic time of year to get afloat on one of the local boats from Watchet and Minehead with bumper, mixed bag catches to be expected. Despite some persistent wind hampering efforts for all boats in the region, Seafire out of Watchet, has proved that there is plenty of rod bending action to be had. Sizeable Thornback rays into double figures and an abundance of Smoothhounds have kept anglers busy in particular. Moving onto the more sandy areas around Minehead there has been a notable increase in the numbers of small eyed rays. Prolific at times, boats from both Watchet and Minehead have seen many small eyed rays landed to low double figures in weight. The theme of “a mixed bag” is very evident for boats fishing the areas around Minehead. Success for anglers has been very forthcoming aboard Osprey, Teddie Boy and Alykat. A fine example of the sport that’s been enjoyed came in recently from
Tope are still a fish that’s high on angler’s wish lists. The start of the month saw good numbers of Tope in all the usual spots. As is typical for the time of year, the Tope still remain but have become a bit more widespread as the weeks have progressed. Bull Huss continue to feature in good numbers for boats heading further west. And with this also whilst heading west around the areas of Porlock, there remains good opportunity for catches of Black Bream and for the determined angler, an opportunity to catch one of our late summer visitors, a Trigger fish.

The signs of Autumn are already upon us, the past few weeks have seen many ports affected by strong winds leading to a lot of cancellations. On the plus side, when we are able to get out, the fishing is really good. This time of year we get spoilt for choice, the Offshore marks have plenty of Rays and Tope on them whilst inshore you can target Plaice, Dabs, Smoothounds, Rays and Bass etc. Mackerel fishing has been slightly better
than the previous 2 years, hopefully they will stay around another month or so. The past few years we have had a remarkable increase in the amount of Species Competitions out from Lymington, these are proving to be very enjoyable and a great success. Let’s hope there are a few more Cod around this winter, I am hearing reports of the first Codling of the winter being caught from Chesil.

The weather along the West Wight area has taken a down turn this week with high winds and rain keeping the boats in port. So time to do all the jobs you were going to do last week. Fishing over the last month has been productive with the inshore banks still producing Rays Smoothound lots of very small Conger and Tope. Plaice fishing over the sands remains good with lots of small fish being returned, however the three pound plus fish keeps the interest going. Offshore banks have produced some big Tope up to fifty pounds, plus Blonde Ray Bullhuss and the occasional Turbot. Some of the local boats have started Shark fishing to the south of the Isle of Wight with plenty of Tope and the occasional Porbeagle and Thresher.

WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling, September 2019
Port Report For a change this report starts off with a report on the British Conger Club’s Championships, which this year was held in Weymouth rather than the usual venue of Plymouth, as written by one of the competitors, Mr Kim Bowden. The two day event was held on Saturday 27rd and Sunday 28th July. Kim writes: “Saturday morning and those staying at The Crown Hotel, our HQ, were up for the 6:15 breakfast before joining the other 46 anglers waiting on the boats all moored just a short walk from the hotel. At 0700 the boats headed out of the harbour and set the course for their preferred wreck to anchor up for the Championship. Most boats decided not to waste time trying for mackerel as it is yet another year when mackerel are in short supply which has been the same for at least the last few years. There was a stiff breeze blowing which meant wind over tide for the early part of the day, so the skippers had a tough job keeping on the wreck, a job where all their skill with the rudder and anchor rope came in to play, also an element of good luck which our skipper admitted one time when we looked to be swinging away from the wreck but something he did brought it back to position and even he was not too sure how! Jamie Pullen on Offshore Rebel certainly did best on the day for number of eels caught and released with 108 Conger with 30 or 40 eels being the average on the other boats. Despite the 240 eels caught overall none were brought to the scales as none made the minimum weight of 40 pounds. Sunday 4th August and again it was to be challenging day with an even stronger wind against the tide than Saturday so most boats drifted for bait until the tide was strong enough to hold the boat in position against the wind. Despite fishing different wrecks it was largely due to the challenging conditions that the best catch was only 38 Conger taken by the anglers on Lyle Stantiford’s “Supanova”. There were two eels over the minimum qualifying weight of 40lb to be weighed ashore. It’s worth mentioning here that next year the winning eel will be based on measurements taken on the boat before returning the eel to the water. So no conger will brought ashore unless the angler wants to for personal consumption or record purposes. Afterwards it was all back to Weymouth Angling Club where refreshment could be had whilst waiting for the presentation. When the scores were in it was Joe Connolly with the biggest Conger over the 2 days weighing 60.25 pounds caught on Supanova, making him the 2019 Championship winner. Second place was a Conger of 49.5 pounds for Andy Selby, caught on Ryan Casey’s “Meerkat”. Kevin Clark caught and released the most eels over the weekend (23) to win the Reg Quest Memorial trophy. Top team was that of Robin Amor, Paul Milkins and Kevin Clark, scoring 2020 points, their score being enough to win as a three man team despite this being a four man team event, so quite an achievement! In summing up thanks were given to: the Weymouth Angling Club for the use of their club house and making us most welcome; Andy Selby of the Weymouth Angling Centre for his help in arranging the Championship and the prize table and not forgetting the Weymouth Skippers, Lyle Stantiford, Ryan Casey, Jamie Pullin, Adrian Brown and Luke Pettis who all worked hard to give us the best possible two days’ fishing in very difficult conditions. Most of all thanks to all the anglers for taking part. Looking forward to seeing you all on 11th and 12 July 2020 in Weymouth”. So, well done Kim for giving such a report from the competitors’ point of view. As with so all competitions, there are many people involved apart from the anglers themselves and this is what brings our angling community together in friendship and gratitude for the efforts of so many to enable an event such as this to progress smoothly. We hope that the competitors enjoyed the hospitality of Weymouth.
As a general round-up so far, the first half of August was a difficult month with a lot of wind….remember the 60 mph winds over the weekend of 10th/11th August? This is not what we want during our so called summer and makes life very difficult for our charter skippers who lose so many days so adverse conditions. Bream fishing has been consistently good with some days exceptional by any standards. The bream vary in size of course but there have been reports of bream to 4lb from all the charter boats. Sometimes drifting has been best and then other times fishing at anchor has been more productive. Bream often like to feed in tide
so today’s superb braids with their ever decreasing tide cutting diameter really come ito their own. 9 ounces of lead will handle a lot of tide in 30 metres if it’s fished in conjuction with a good, fine braid. Anglers know now (don’t they?) that propping a rod up to fish for bream whilst at anchor is definitely not the way to fish. That lead needs to be able to travel and search the ground but not be too light so that it skates across the surface.
15 year old Archie Gough with an 8lb Bull Huss Sally Ann Jo
15 year old Grant Elves, again on his first boat trip with an 8lb Undulate - Sally Ann Jo
14 year old Bradley Down on his first boat trip with a 2lb 4oz black bream - Sally Ann Jo
The bream marks are on either rocky or broken ground covered with small mussels. This rich feeing ground produces many different species with conger, rays and tope taking the bream baits which then becomes a real test of an angler’s skill in easing a big fish caught on bream bait to the net without the trace snapping. It’s worth having a couple of rods set up…one for the bream…and then, if there are bigger fish around, one at the ready with a heavier trace to cope for the larger species. The Shambles Bank has been reasonable with turbot and occasional good sized brill. Most of the turbot have been under the current size limit and should be returned but it’s still nice to catch one. There have been a few plaice about and with the increase in the mussels, we must hope that September will produce the better conditioned plaice as it used to. September and October are generally regarded as the best motnhs for inshore fishing. The bream should be plentiful along with those species mentioned above 9conger, ,huss and rays) coming from the same ground. General reef fishing targeting the bigger fish has been excellent over the past few years with more anglers willing to fish for these rather than concentrating on ‘fish for the table’. Indeed one of the Weymouth skippers was telling me that there is a real shift in anglers’ attitudes and awareness of how much angling has changed in recent years. There is now more of a desire to fish for sport rather than being obsessed with filling the freezer which has to be good.

There have been some excellent bass caught to 8lb. These fish have come as a bonus whilst aiming for other species. The days of trips specialising in bass are, at the moment at least, over. Charging through the Portland Race, blowing away fuel, making anglers enjoy difficult angling conditions all in the pursuit of the Holy Grail, the bass, are largely over. Being able to keep just one bass each means that a part of the day may be given to bassing whereas in the past the whole trip would be concentrated on them. Of course, if a group wants to target bass and are fully aware of the one fish retention restriction, then charters can be made. Coming round Portland Bill during late July and August, there have been very large flocks of sea birds hunting fish being driven to the surface by large mackerel and bass. The sea has been a boiling frenzy of activity at times more reminiscent of Game Fishing in more exotic locations. One group aiming to catch a few mackerel at the end of the day reported taking 28 bass in one drift and thus had to release 20 of them and the boat forced to move away! Imagine how the anglers felt about that…having to deliberately leave a massive shoal of feeding bass! September sees EFSA’s (European Federation of Sea Anglers) returning to Weymouth for one of their 5 day events. With 18 boats chartered and many visiting European anglers arriving with non-fishing family members, this event is a massive boost to Weymouth’s tourism with up to 400 people arriving and usually staying for 7 days. We are very fortunate to have Andy Selby, owner of Weymouth Angling Centre, in our angling community. Andy’s organisational skills along with his fine staff team and many voluntary helpers has resulted in many major events coming to Weymouth. EFSA is always a special one giving anglers from many different European countries the chance to meet up again. The EFSA competitors are fishing 2 days of ‘line class’ fishing which will be aimed at the bigger fish such as the conger, rays and tope. These two days will be fished at anchor. The following 3 days will be fished mainly on the move hunting for the many different species that the Weymouth/Portland sea area offers as well as incorporating a period of time at anchor for those all important point scoring dogfish. So, there’s lots to look forward to in September and many anglers and friends to welcome to Weymouth. Thank you all for your continued support to the local charter fleet and let us hope that the winds will be gentler in September than they were in August.

BACK TO BASICS By Martin Wood This month I figured I would cover an area that many anglers get hooked on early and dive into head first and stay fascinated with and that is Bass fishing! These amazing silver bars are not only lovely fish to look at but give a very good account of themselves when they are on the end of your line, they are a strong fighting fish and are an excellent table fish which makes them highly desirable, and the best part is they are popping up everywhere at present. In recent years the Bass has been in the headlines a lot about their sustainability which has been in question due to overfishing with trawlers and no constructive controls being put into place except for shore anglers only allowing one to be taken home per day from April the 1st to October 31st as long as the Bass is over 42cm/ 16.5 inches. For the rest of the year they are catch and release only. I fish for my table and I spend enough on tackle and baits so is some return for your sport and money. I enjoy fish as do my family, I keep the odd bass but let a lot of them go even if they are above the legal take home size. Why do I do this? Because the growth rate of Bass is so slow a 10lb Bass is likely to be between 15-20 years old. It is a good mature breeding fish which will certainly be helping stocks and would be too much meat in one hit for my family so I tend to keep bass around the 4-5lb mark and let the rest go. So catching these fantastic fish... some angling friends find them hard to catch it's their number one target yet can’t catch them ending up being their nemesis. If fishing for bass looks for features or surf or both! It’s that simple if the feature has weed around it chances are high you will catch them as they hang around weedy areas as they feed of the larvae and bugs etc on and in the weed, it also provides great shelter and provides a very good place to ambush smaller prey who also feel safer in the weed. So fish to features it won’t matter if it 3 meters from the shore or 100 yards away features are key for a predator fish like this they patrol around taking all in their path and a bass mouth can take a large bait with no worries. A lot of anglers are obsessed with distance which is fine but chances are
you are casting over the Bass! You can find them a lot of the time at 30 meters and under whilst recently guiding a guy who wanted to catch bass he couldn't believe it when I told him to cast around 5-7 yards out ertainly no more than 10 yards and using Rag worm as a bait we caught one straight off the bat and it was his first shore fish too… great start! Then next time on another guided session the same again happened but on squid the features we were fishing too were small recesses on a beach tide line due to the tidal movement they don’t always have to be massive but they hold food and as the tide moves the stones it releases the food. Whilst my Father has been over for a week just recently we decided to get some good number of fishing sessions in, we had a few good bass as well and again all caught by features, one was a gulley around 15 yards from the shore edge and the other was a rock formation on an otherwise clean beach. RIGS: A lot of rigs will see you catch Bass whether it’s a two hook flapper, Wessex, running ledger, paternoster or pulley rig the main thing is putting the rig in the right position. BAITS: Baits to use are just as varied and each angler will have his own preference but sand eel, squid, mackerel, crab, rag worm and lug worm will all see you catching these great fish. Again its getting your bait into the right position as well so… if there is a lug bed around the feature use lug, if it’s a crabby area use crabs etc. Most bass if it’s a clean beach will be patrolling just behind the surf line picking up all the food being released you can catch and I have caught feeding bass in a foot of water. Depth of water is not always everything like a lot think if the water is dirty or cloudy use a smell attractor to help or stinky bait. If the water is clear use bait that would be natural and present it properly and make sure your hook points are proud of the bait! But above all do your homework look at marks at low tide it pays off and is well worth the effort. Tight lines until next month

Vernon Everitt Match Boat League 4th Competition. On Saturday 27th July 2019 Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held their fourth match in a series of six of Vernon Everett Match League Competitions which is kindly sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre, of New Milton. With the weather and tides being favourable sixteen club members left Poole Quay aboard two charter boats, “Boney M” skippered by Louis Medley and “Mistress Linda” skippered by Phil Higgins. These matches are fished on the basis of the number of types of species caught, with varying number of points having been allocated for each species and totals of each species with 10 being the maximum number caught of any one species. With a set maximum fishing time both skippers can choose where they fish throughout the day. Both boats’ first stop was to drift for plaice on the grounds around the two piers off Bournemouth and then onto an area of rough ground to push points totals up for

9th Shore competition 10th August. On Saturday 10th August Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held its 9th shore competition at Calshot. This was a changed venue from Lymington Sea Wall because of the gale force winds that were blowing this day. Calshot had a strong wind blowing but it was a little more protected from the strong south-westerly wind that had been blowing for a few days. Five club members signed on and two weighed in fish consisting of smooth hound, dogfish and silver eels. Six fish in total were caught for a total weight of 5lb 0 6/8oz. Best round fish was a smooth hound weighing 2lb 3oz caught by Ben Daniel. Results: 1st Malcolm Stote 4 fish 3lb 3 7/8oz, 2nd Ben Daniel 2 fish 2lb 13 3/8oz. Only edible fish are retained. On Wednesday 21st July ten club members of Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational fishing trip out of Weymouth aboard charter boat “Supanova” skippered by Lyle Stantiford. On leaving harbour a force 4 south easterly was blowing which made Portland Races a bit choppy but a good number of mackerel of a good size were caught. Then Lyle went to a mark which was good for bull huss, rays and conger eels. We stayed there for a short time before moving to our main objective which was a mark well known for bream. Some twenty plus fish were caught including a good bream for Karl Bates which weighed 2lb 10oz and also Ben Daniel a bream of 2lb 7oz. Only edible fish were retained. All the others were released straight away. Thanks to Lyle Stantiford for an enjoyable day’s fishing.
