www.snowbee.co.uk NEW BASS RULES WILL BE ENFORCED DESPITE COMMERCIAL FISHING PROTEST Attempts by commercial fishing groups to find ways round the new rules agreed by EU ministers last December to protect bass stocks appear to be floundering. It follows formal confirmation by the government, in response to an enquiry by the Angling Trust, that targeted netting for bass is no longer permissible and that enforcement action will be taken against transgressors. The National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO), ignoring several years of scientific advice from ICES, lobbied hard but unsuccessfully against the 2017 bass measures which now only allow for bass to be targeted by commercial hook and line boats or by recreational fishing. Those fishing with fixed nets may only land bass caught as ‘unavoidable bycatch’ while targeting other species. In an answer to a recent parliamentary question from North Cornwall MP and Angling Trust ‘Bass Champion’ Scott Mann, the Fisheries Minister George Eustice said: “To ensure compliance, the Marine Management Organisation will continue to engage with industry via regionally based staff to raise awareness of the rules, ensuring they are understood and individuals can access the right information easily. Where these rules are broken a proportionate and appropriate approach to enforcement action will be taken.” The NFFO had appealed to the minister claiming that there was a “moral panic” over bass stocks and that this was in response to “huge political pressure from the well organised and funded recreational angling lobby and their friends in Brussels and Westminster.” They have also tried to object to the rules requiring only vessels with an existing record for catching bass to continue to exploit the bass fishery – a measure deliberately introduced to limit the capacity of the commercial fleet -- but this too looks like it won’t get very far as recent guidance published by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) states: “The track record is linked to the vessel and remains with the vessel if it changes ownership. A track record cannot be transferred from one vessel to another. New vessels without a track record will not be eligible to fish for bass.” It goes on to say: “The catch limits shall not be transferable between vessels.” And George Eustice has confirmed that: “Letters are being sent to all commercial fishermen within England and Wales who, based on their catch track records, have authorisation to catch bass, and to those who do not have such authorisation.”
WINNER
Last month, the Angling Trust secured clarification of the rules regarding targeted netting for bass and it has also written to the minister reiterating the need for the measures to be implemented in full. Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd said: “Recreational anglers, charter boats and commercial fishermen have all suffered severe limitations in their fishing opportunities as a result of the new regulations which were based on scientific advice that the spawning stock has reached a level at which its ability

to regenerate itself may be compromised. All these groups might want changes to the regulations, but if appeals to compromise agreements were allowed it would create chaos, uncertainty and utterly undermine the functioning of the EU Council Fishing Opportunities process.:

He added: "The NFFO has enjoyed huge political influence with the government and it is laughable for them to suggest that they are the victims here. They have been allowed great freedoms to exploit this fishery, which they have done irresponsibly and, as a result, we have ended up with a total ban on bass netting as well severe restrictions on the freedom of anglers to fish recreationally for a publicly owned stock." Scott Mann MP said: "I am pleased to have helped secure these important clarifications from the government as I have been aware for some time of the decline in bass numbers and the targeting of bass, even in what are supposed to be bass nursery areas. The by-catch limit should be a by-catch and is not a target. These necessary changes will take some time to lead to a recovery in the numbers and size of bass, as the fish can take seven years to reach sexual maturity.”

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS
THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
I will start my report this month with the question on every ones lips in fact I am sick of hearing it, any cod around yet skip NO NO there is no cod, it’s the first year that we have not had cod in any quantity for a very long time and these things happen from time to time nobody knows why but sod cod, fishing is still great in the Thames estuary lots of fantastic rays and some of the biggest whiting I have seen for a long time. Rays are just about every were up to fourteen fifteen pounds ten to twenty fish a time now that’s good fishing in any ones book, but you can steam around and miss them as they are in patches, get on the right mark and you can be catching them all day and if your unlucky you can steam around catch one or two and that’s it anchor up
Excellent facilities
again hunting around for a few more. Some very big pouting also about and still several dabs to be had on the good marks.
Blyth Catamaran – Seawatch 1
Bass will soon be back and yes I know we are restricted on keeping them but it’s still great sport and a good fighting fish but back they must go but a nice picture and some great fishing sport & memory’s with friends, it’s not all about eating everything you catch is it!!! As the weather starts to improve we will be able to move further offshore targeting other species with hopefully a run of spur dog and who nose a spring codling or two and don’t spread it around but we had a spring codling on Sophie Lea last week o my god.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
There is simply just one place to start this month’s report and that is the capture of a potential British Record Spur dog from a North Devon rock mark by Jack Hillon of Castaways SAC. I’m sure that this amazing capture is referred to elsewhere in this month’s paper so all it leaves me to say is a massive well done Jack! During the same evening fellow club angler Ryan Dumbreck also landed his own cracking Spurdog of 14lb 6.5oz which is a new Castaways SAC catch and release record. The lads from Castaways SAC have certainly been finding the fish this past month, with a number of trips to Beesands paying off for Rob Batten who landed a new PB Spotted Ray of 5-2 and followed this up with a late season Whiting of 1-15. Not to be outdone Giuliano Pellcalle found another good Spotted of 5-5 to go with his 6lb’er from last month. Beesands certainly seems to be consistent on producing the rays at the moment although whether we see the same outstanding Plaice fishing we saw last year remains to be seen. One of the largest Spotted Rays caught during the past month fell to the rod of Steve Wilkinson who landed an absolute cracker of 7-5 which was a new PB for the Roving Rods SAC member. Any rock marks giving way to sand have the potential to produce good Spotted Rays at this time of year and if its’ rough there is always the chance of picking up a good Bullhuss on the clean ground. I am hearing reports of several double figure Bullhuss having been caught over the past few days which bodes well as we move into the prime months of April and May. Rodbenders SAC member Joe Gardner found a cracking Huss of 12-11 which was returned after weighing. Please note a lot of the larger Huss caught this time of year are heavy
with pups so please return them after weighing. Subject to getting a settled period of weather the plaice should start showing in increased numbers from the open beaches. Beesands and Slapton are likely to be the most popular spots but there is always a chance of a good Plaice from the rock ledges on the outer marks on the Salcombe Estuary. Another popular spot is Starehole Bay which is ideal if the winds are blowing westerly although it’s a bit of a hike to get there! Finally, on the boats I have received reports from Malc Jones on Sea Angler 2 that the wrecks are fishing very well for double figure Pollack and Cod. By next month’s report fishing on the reefs should be in full swing. That’s it from me for this month – Happy Dipping.

Size Matters is a 45ft Guimond from Canada, it is one of the most famous charter boats on the south coast, it has been owned and skippered by Graham Hannaford from the day he helped build it back in 2001. The boat has a very good reputation with anglers all over the UK for catching big Sharks, Conger, Ling, Cod, Pollack and many more. Back in March 2016 Kevin Mckie a charter skipper from Liverpool and good friend of Grahams for over 20 years bought Size Matters and the business Graham had built up over 40 years, it was time for Graham to retire and enjoy his time more. Kevin had some very big boots to fill if he was going to make it on the south coast as a respected charter skipper. When Kevin took over Graham gave Kevin some very important advice, don't

worry about what other boats don't worry about what other boats are catching just let your fishing do the talking!!! Over the next six months Kevin went on to help his anglers catch some cracking fish. He also did five multi day Channel Island trips targeting Turbot and Brill on the banks, best day was 27 to 9lb. Most of Kevin's Wrecking trips are fishing 30 to 60 miles from Plymouth. Sharking, he heads out 25 to 40 miles. Reefing, fishing up to 20 miles out targeting over 30 different species. On October 15th 2016 Kevin steamed Size Matters to Liverpool for the winter season to target Cod, Rays, Whiting and Dabs on the Mersey. Already this year he has had his anglers catching over 50 cod a day to 15lb 8oz and over 50 Rays a day to 13lb 5oz. Not too bad only 400 yards from shore.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
I’ll pick up where I left off in the last report, we have completed our first few wreck trips to target the pollock. The first drift of the year is proving hard to beat with Jamie Hayes landing a monster of 17lb 8oz, Andy Hayden catching the years first ling and Bob Morrison boating his first of 3 doubles that day. Fishing has been steady on all the trips out to the wrecks, clarity in the water is still very good and we should get a good few more weeks before the bloom comes in and the pollock become a bit more elusive for a while and we focus on the cod. Elsewhere we
John 20lb spur - Silver Spray
have had our first trip down to the shambles, plenty of sand eels on the feathers but only a few turbot to show for our efforts. The fishing will pick up as we move on into April and the temperature rises again. And finally the offshore banks have been producing some enormous hits of spur dogs, nothing too big yet, but a few fish around the 20lb mark show that the big ones are on their way. Although the weather has kept us in mostly over the last few weeks we are looking forward to more of the same over the next month on the fishing front.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins During a local angling club competition T Callaway who up to last month had never caught a Conger landed another big eel of 60lb on a 15lb class rod fishing for Rays, lots more eels were bought to the boat along with Blondes to 25lb B Honeybun and a bonus inshore Pollack of 10lb for A Johanson. Storm Doris bought chaos to any fishing for a few days with strong winds and very big seas but nowhere near as powerful as last winter’s storms which by this time had passed the letter I in the alphabet. The 1st weekend of March produced yet more strong winds but a brief weather window allowed a few hours fishing which for the time of year proved very successful with several Rays to 10lb lots of small Hounds and Dogs and 2 small Turbot. It is good to see the arrival of the Plaice, although on the thin side they are feeding and will soon be in good condition, each trip is seeing better numbers. On the outer marks Bull Huss Congers, Rays and Spurs to 23lb are being caught on regular basis and further off to sea the wrecks are producing some nice catches of Pollack up to 17lb. S Bullas and his group had a good day on the Pollack with some good double figure fish
being landed and plenty of banter. As winter lets go and spring temperatures rise we will see the arrival of Bream , Gurnards, Turbot Brill and Mackeral followed by the predatory fish Bass Tope and Sharks. John stanford had this nice plaice of 2lb 12oz out from beer on the boat blue lady. Alex Rowland. caught his PB undulate ray of 17lb 2oz from Boscombe pier on a double sand eel. Alex Embelton with a 17lb undulate ray. Report below. I fished Bognor Regis pier on the night of 13/03/17, with high tide due at 00:05 I left my house at 21:00 and was at the pier setup and fishing by 21:30. It was a lovely night to be out fishing, clear sky, full moon, no wind, no rain and fairly warm. I had with me my 11ft, 2-4oz bass rod and had my spinning rod I took with me last time to try and winkle out some of the smaller species for my species hunt. I only had squid with me today. I setup with a 2 hook flapper with size 1/0 hooks and baited with small bits of squid chucked it out and setup my spinning rod with a little rig I made last time but added a second hook snood to have 2 baits at different depths as I was dropping it straight down the side after 20 mins of faffing with it due to the strong tides and big waves every now and then I gave up on that idea and packed it away. There was a guy next to me fishing, we were the only two up there and he caught the first fish which was a doggy then he caught a pout and then another doggy, at that point I was feeling like a blank was on the cards when finally I break the blank with a spirited fight from an average size dogfish then the polish guy next to me jumps out of his chair as his rod slammed down and almost lost his bell, after a short fight he landed an 11lb undulate ray and that really got me excited so I changed my rig to a long and low with 2/0 hooks and stuck a whole squid out. 10 mins later the guy next to me catches another ray, a thornback this time at 3lb. I was getting frustrated and after congratulating the fella I returned to my rod to see an annoying small rattle I reeled in a greedy micro pout. another steady stream of dogfish for the other guy so I reeled in and changed for a fresh bait, using my baiting needle I took my time making sure this bait was perfect and it was, I wish I got a picture but I had a good feeling about this bait. Chucked it out as far as I could as I noticed the guy next to me was casting at distance. Ten minutes later my rod slams down... And stays down with my heart in my mouth I picked the rod up and struck and straight away I knew I was in trouble, this was the strongest fish I have ever felt on the end of my line. It was pulling and pulling and bending my rod to angles I wasn't even comfortable with so for the first time in my fishing history I felt I needed to loosen the
drag just a touch and off it went, slowly but surely the fish took small amounts of line. At points I was pulling hard with both hands on the rod blank not even holding the reel handle and the fish was pulling back and we were just stuck where we were. Every time I gained a bit of line the fish took twice as much back. After 10 mins my arms and back were aching, I was more unfit than I originally thought lol but I started to gain line pumping and winding. I was so nervous that something would go wrong, shockleader would snap, a knot would break but I kept going, running purely on adrenaline, my arms and legs shaking. I was pushing this rod to its limits, the bend in the rod was immense and I could hear the wind hitting the line whistling past it as it was pulled so tight. After a tough twenty minute battle I could see shockleader but the fish was still deep it was tricky to bully the fish off the bottom with a bass rod but I did it, and there it was a bloody monstrous ray, I slowly walked it along the length of the pier, a few times the fish tried to dive for the bottom, manoeuvred round a few bends with my heart in my mouth, I just knew something had to go wrong, but it still didn't. With quite big waves all night I was nervous about getting to the shore, I thought I would lose the fish, timing it perfectly I bought it in surfing on a wave, I picked the best wave as it took it up high onto the beach with little chance of getting dragged back out by another wave whilst I ran down jumped over the railing and ran down to the fish, there it was a magnificent looking beast, eyes glowing at me fiercely, my pb undulate ray. I unhooked it and walked back up onto the pier, as I was carrying it I knew it was a double figure fish but I had no idea it was going to take my scales down to 17lb on the nose. I checked and checked again, I couldn't believe my eyes, the bloke next to me said lets check on his digital scales and it said the same thing 17lb exactly. Something went right for me, finally, the fishing gods must have felt sorry for me.

Took some pics of it and released it back to grow bigger I went on to catch one final dogfish and packed up a happy man at 2:00. Walked home with a big grin on my face.

Annual Prize Presentation Ringing the changes for once, the decision was taken to make this year’s prize presentation a less formal affair, holding it at their clubhouse with a buffet afterwards instead of the usual sit-down meal. This move proved to be popular with fifty members attending. Before the presentation, the club’s Chairman, Alec Harmer, thanked everyone for coming and was particularly pleased to see so many of the junior members present. He also thanked the caterers ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and all those involved in organising the event and helping out on the night. He explained that the recent review of the club’s trophies and prizes had been done in the main to reflect the more conservation minded approach by anglers nowadays. One aspect of this review had been an expansion of the current record lists and awards for fish caught and returned alive. He went on to outline the various projects which the club hoped to complete in 2017, and was pleased to say he had just been informed that from the February ‘good causes’ scheme run by Waitrose, Lymington, the club are to receive £170, which will be allocated to the junior section. He, thanked everyone who supported it. He was pleased to announce David Graham, manager of England’s Junior Team had recently taken up the position of the club’s Junior Representative and on behalf of the club wished him every success. Two of the junior members had done particularly well in the Angling Trust Wessex Region Marine Junior Awards with Oliver Warren coming first and Flora Munden coming third. Club President Derek Smith then congratulated the following club members for having been chosen to represent their country at national and international level: Rhys Hayward for being selected to the England Youth (Under 21) Team (shore), and Malcolm Stote who will be the team’s manager; Callum Graham and Toby Oldfield for being selected to the Senior England Home International Team (shore); and Steve Batchelor who will be both manager of the Home International Boat Team, as well as being in the team. The club was very proud of them all, he added. Collecting their prizes on the night were: Juniors. Rhys Hayward, Flora Munden, Max Munden, Ollie Savin and Oliver Warren. Adults. Roland Blomfield, Arron Bridges, Robert Flicos, Malcolm Gerrish, Harry Gray, Paul Watson, Alec Harmer, Arran Harmer, Barry Littlefair, Dennis Mapes, Allan Martin, Jamie Munden, Malcolm Stote and Jason Toomer. Robin Lane won the Clubmanship Award for services rendered during the year, for developing boat fishing within the club and for organising the successful tackle talks held at the club. Match Report: Mersey Anglers Open, Sun March 5th 2017, Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool (69 rods).
Relentless rain throughout the match turned the event into a feat of endurance (with some anglers not lasting the course). Nonetheless, there was another healthy attendance for this latest Mersey Anglers open at Otterspool.. Fresh crab certainly seemed to play a vital role in catching the codling as not many whiting appeared over the high water. George Smith made the most of peg 87 down by the pumping station landing 9 codling 4 whiting and a flounder, Steve Smith was 2nd on peg 55 with 7 codling and 7 whiting, Ian Brookes in 3rd on peg 86 with 5 codling 5 whiting and a rockling. Results: 1st George Smith (Grimsby), 516cms (Zone D) 2nd Steve Smith (Whitehaven), 402cms (Zone C) 3rd Ian Brookes (Birkenhead), 346cms (Zone D) Zone Winners: (A) Shane Russell (Old Colwyn), 235cms. (B) Alan Price (Kinmel Bay), 299cms. (C) Steve Potts (Gosforth), 218cms. (D) Gareth Flynn (Brynsiencyn), 207cms. Roundfish pool: Dave Shorthouse (Stafford), codling, 56cms. Flatfish pool: Callum Richardson (Grimsby), plaice, 33cms.
The evening continued with the presentation of the numerous trophies and awards members can win throughout the year. There is a good chance of an early ray from local surf beaches with Putsborough a good bet. Combe Martin SAC hold their annual Open match there on May 6th a popular event in the angler’s diary.
catch a fantastic specimen Spur of 17lb 71/2oz. The fish was tempted on a sandeel squid cocktail fished on a 4/0 pennel pulley rig. Ryan Dunbreck also had a fine Spur of 14lb 61/2oz a new Castaways Catch & Release record. The Atkinson Family Fished a local rock mark in search of an eel, huss or a late spurdog. Andrew Atkinson caught 3 spurs to 11lb 12ozs and Cameron Atkinson caught not only his first shore caught spurdog but he managed 2 spurs to 11lb 14ozs (new pb), Josh Atkinson managed to tick off the eel with a small one around 15lb and the huss with one about 4lb meaning they achieved all target species and also had lots of dogfish!
Boat anglers have enjoyed spurdog sport off Ilfracombe aboard John Barbeary’s Bluefin with fish of 19lb and 18lb to the rod of Appledore Shipbuilders Andrew Atkinson. Spurdog sport should continue well into April with every chance of a 20lb plus specimen. Shore anglers also managed to make contact with a few spurdog. Castaways Sea Angling Club member Gary Hillon fished a North Devon Rock mark to a
Several thick-lipped grey mullet have been caught along the coast and have also been seen in local estuaries. Combe Martin SAC member Graham Snow landed a fine specimen of 4lb 131/2oz and I landed a hard fighting of fish of 3lb 4oz. Grey mullet were once considered to be fish of the summer months but recent seasons have seen local anglers land mullet throughout the year.
Springtime is often a difficult month for the sea angler as the winter and summer species often fail to overlap. I have heard rumours of early smoothound and seen pictures of a few bass caught from marks in the Ilfracombe area. After dark fishing will bring plenty of dogfish the occasional conger and rockling on small baits fished close in. The LRF angler could find sport targeting various species off Ilfracombe Pier.

ALDERNEY
ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding Shore Sport How’s it been – has it picked up? Nope – well that’s what I think anyway, feels quiet, very few people fishing and very little reported BUT………………. and it’s a massive BUT we have had three quality shore caught fish reported. An Alderney record Gilthead, a double figure Bass on the lure and a cracking 15lb 1oz Undulate Ray. Lets start with the Gilthead. So with expectation of catching nothing Jasper Osbourne set up on Platte Saline. 3 anglers had not long packed up with the result of one Red Mullet and a small Bass for their efforts on 6 rods. Jasper loads his 3/0 hook on a Pulley rig up, whacked it out towards the calm and sunny horizon. Placed the rod in the rest and BAM! His rod is doing more than a lot of breakdancing as he struggled to get control of what had hit him. Now if you have caught a Gilthead before, like Couches, they give it everything. Pound for pound one of the hardest fighting fish in UK waters. So, Jasper didn’t have a clue what was going on and had no idea of what to expect. All he could do was get control and with each head thump or run allow the fish the time it needed so as not to lose the hook hold. So when he finally got a glimpse of the fish he was ecstatic. His first ever Gilthead Bream and it was an Alderney record at 6lb 1oz!! The previous record had stood since early 2000. Next fabulous fish should never have happened! Whilst most of us would have been holed up indoors decorating, peeling the spuds for Sunday dinner or painting Andy Black was out in a full gale and rain slinging his 17cm Daiwa Shore Line Shiner around. Swells were enormous and the wind was whipping the tops of the waves off. He had tried several marks before he found himself on a reefy mark west of Platte Saline. A decent cast in between the gusts he managed to get the lure working and nailed a fantastic 10lb 3oz Bass. Now Andy has been fishing for around 5 or 6 years, lure fishing mainly and this was his first double figure fish, awesome stuff and very dramatic. Lastly but by no means least, nothing as adventurous as the other two but James Clarke caught an excellent Undulate Ray of 15lb 1oz. Fishing a calm night in between the storms he fished his squid bait at usual range, again Platte Saline. The rod showed some activity but nothing too much. When it came to checking the bait there it was, a short while of wondering what it was he could see this beautifully marked Undulate hit the beach. PB for him and his heaviest fish he has ever caught and again James has
not been fishing too long neither. 3 cracking fish! Elsewhere, it’s a few Pollack, plenty of Ballans on the lures, the odd Red Mullet, a few Bass and a few small Bream – Couches and Blacks. Boat Sport Lack of activity to do a recent report but soon I’ll have my own boat gain so will be out as much as I can. Reports of Turbot though are there with fish on the banks between here and Guernsey. Wrecks are loaded up with pollack to 17lb as they seem to be everywhere. Alderney Angling Festival Plans are in place for the 32nd one, this year it is being held on 14th October till 21st October. Flights and accommodation still available. Prize table around £5,000 in cash, fantastic event - For details contact Charlie at festival@cwgsy.net or ring 07781422625 and leave a message. Jasper Osbourne with an Alderney Shore Caught Record Gilthead Bream - 6lb 1oz!

LATE SEASON LUNKER FROM SOMERSET BEACH Cliff Jones reports on his great catch... Continued from page 1 James Clarke 15lb 1oz Undulate Ray
ALDERNEY ANGLING We were fishing the Weston Outcast's monthly match which had been scheduled for Bossington but with strong southwesterly gusts forecast for the middle hours the venue was switched to Porlock. 22 club members turned up to fish and we were pegged out between the cottages and the start of the reef. With coloured water following the after effects of Storm Dorris plenty of doggies were hoped for. On all my previous trips to the venue I have been pegged down towards the cottages on the shallower but cleaner ground. With this in mind I tied up 2 and 3 hook clipped down rigs with size 1 Kamasan aberdeens. This time I pulled peg 18 and found myself up on the rough ground just before the reef, sods law. We started fishing at 1.30pm at around low tide. Fishing was steady with good positive bites, either side of me the odd doggie was being landed but I managed to bump 3 consecutive fish in the rough bottom. I was contemplating changing over to either a pulley rig or an up and over which would help in keeping the weight up of the bottom when retrieving a fish. On the next bite I let the fish have a couple of goes at it before picking up the rod and lifting into the next good rattle. As I started to reel in I could tell I had a good fish on and thought thought to myself 'Conger, this might go mental as it comes into the shallows'. I steadily reeled in keeping a reasonable pressure on it but kept thinking
about the size 1 hook. With conger in mind I called over to Dan and asked him to get the gaff ready but by the time he got over to me the fish was coming into the shallows so he went straight to the waters edge. we saw fins break the surface, we knew it was not a conger. From low down Dan was not sure but from my higher vantage point I could clearly see the back and shoulders of the fish. It was a cod, a double obviously, and my heart was racing. I managed to cushion the effects of the backwash as each wave brought it closer in then Dan pounced on it and lifted it ashore. Instant relief and pure elation all rolled into one. Other club members pegged nearby all gathered round and the usual weight guessing commenced. I said 'about 18' to which Dan replied ' **"^$* that, its got to be over Twenty.' Dan hooked it onto the Avon scales and lifted it up, the needle went round to 24lb 4oz, we were all gobsmacked. Out came the cameras for a few pics then as the fish seemed healthy and the huge belly may have been full of roe I decided to see if she could be returned. With more suitable footware on Phetos and Bert stepped forward to put her back. A couple waves pushed her back ashore but as she was upright and with his experience of returning big fish back into the Nordic fjords Phetos tried again, successfully. Just before she went back we realised we were fishing a length to weight match so the tape was laid out and the fish measured 101cm, bit pointless in the end as the chart only went up to 80cm. The fish was taken on the middle bait with the hook catching in the roof of its mouth, on the top hook there was a 20cm rockling which is most likely what the cod was after. With a small conger added in I totaled just under 26lb to win the match. Kieth who came second must have been a bit miffed as he amassed a good bag of doggies for 15lb plus. Tackle used: Zziplex Profile rod, Daiwa 7HT Mag reel, 20lb F1 mainline Asso Leader Bait: mackerel and cuttle strips whipped on together. Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby
The last month has been a repeat of the previous one, even more NW winds keeping boats on their drives. Not a single boat has made it out from Burnham and I have had to resort to piking to get my fishing fix. I did manage a wrecking trip on Wild Frontier from Weymouth along with my brother and father. Fishing wasn't easy but we found enough pollack in the end up to 14lbs. There have been reports of increasing numbers of codling from the beaches and from boats from other ports when they can get out so the prospects for the next month look promising. Thornbacks, eels, dogs and maybe even bass should make for a busy day. Fish of the month sponsored by Thyers Tackle of
Highbridge for February went unclaimed as nothing was weighed in for the first time in a couple of years. April is a busy month with two competitions, the Vicoue Trophy on the 9th and the Ray Farthing trophy on the 23rd. There is no club meeting in April but we do have our presentation evening on Friday 21st at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front followed by a curry.

ANGLING TRUST - NO SUPPORT FOR SEA ANGLING 2017 DATA COLLECTION The Angling Trust will not be supporting a government backed-project to collect catch data from recreational sea anglers over the course of 2017. Sea Angling 2017 has been commissioned by Cefas (the Centre for Environment Fisheries & Aquaculture Science) and will build on the results of similar data collection exercises carried out in 2012 and 2016. The project is designed to fulfil EU requirements for the UK to provide data on recreational catches for a number of species listed under the Common Fisheries Policy’s Control Regulation and Data Collection Framework. Anglers will be asked to use log books detailing their catches over the course of 2017. Earlier this year the Angling Trust stated that its contribution to any future data collection exercise would be dependent on two factors: A) Extensive improvements being made in the collection of accurate landings/fishing mortality data from all sources – not just recreational sea anglers;
RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II
B) Policy decisions being evidence-based and reflecting the social, environmental and economic impacts of all sectors in a balanced and proportionate way. To date we have been provided with no evidence to suggest that either of these have been addressed and the Angling Trust’s Conservation & Access Group, which advises on marine fisheries policy, has been left with no option but to maintain the position to withhold support for Sea Angling 2017 until such a time that sufficient effort has been made to address the conditions set out above. It was hoped that the results of a sampling project carried out by Cefas to sample the extent and impact of unrecorded landings by the Under10m fleet would have provided the evidence required for the Angling Trust to consider future participation in catch data by recreational anglers. However, the report has yet to be published. In addition, an audit by the EU Commission into the UK’s data collection and reporting from the Under10m fleet is still in progress. The Angling Trust withheld its support for this year’s project, Sea Angling 2016, on the grounds that, despite evidence being collected as a result of multiple projects over many years – Net Benefits (2004), Invest In Fish South West (2005), Drew Associates report (2007), Sea Angling 2012, Defining The Economic and Environmental Values of Sea Bass (2014) –
the government has consistently failed to incorporate any of the findings or recommendations into its marine resources management policies thereby depriving the recreational sea angling sector of fair and proportional consideration. The results of the first data collection exercise, Sea Angling 2012, were used to justify the EU 2016 fishing opportunities decision for bass which saw recreational anglers banned from retaining bass for six months of the year followed by a one-fish-per-day bag limit for the remainder of 2016. This was based on the assertion that recreational sea anglers were responsible for 30 per cent of total bass fishing mortality. However, illegal, unreported and unregulated landings of bass from other sources remain unknown meaning the impact of recreational fishing is suspected to be massively over-estimated. In addition, trust between recreational sea anglers and Defra was further damaged when Defra stated at the launch of Sea Angling 2012 that, “If Sea Angling 2012 and similar surveys in Europe highlight circumstances where anglers should play an important role in conserving vulnerable or overexploited stocks, Defra would seek to agree voluntary measures to avoid having controls imposed from Brussels”. However, a year after the report was published the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, went on to agree controls on recreational anglers imposed by the European Council. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “It’s with regret that we currently feel forced to withhold our support for the Sea Angling 2017 project. We do, in principle, support the accurate collection of data provided it is from all sources including all commercial fishing sectors as well as angling. However, we made it very clear earlier this year what the conditions were for us to support any future data collection exercise. Unfortunately, no attempt has been made to seriously address these conditions and until there is we will not be encouraging sea anglers to participate in catch data collection. Government and its agencies seem to recognise that there are serious deficiencies in landings data from commercial fisheries but apparently aren’t willing to do anything to address them. In the meantime, catches by recreational anglers get closely scrutinised and used to disproportionately restrict members of the public fishing for publicly-owned fish stocks.”

Smouthound - Seafire II
This year, the weather had relented for most of the important fishing competitions and it did so again for the first leg of the EFSA Wales Shore Championships fished on a Saturday in February at Dale Beach. But for the second leg, fished in March it was appalling with forceful South Westerly winds and constant rain meaning that instead of fishing the intended venue at Aberavon, which was virtually unfishable, it was blown off to the Mumbles in order to get some sort of relief from the inclement. Unfortunately, once again the entry was not high, for various reasons; it seems that no time of the year is ideal to get maximum attendance at these events, a shame really or, like most other outdoor pursuits is interest waning, especially among the younger brethren for whom indoor computer activities can sometimes seem the order of the day. The first day, at Dale, saw most anglers catch, but not with good numbers of fish over the 20cm minimum size being measured and released, even when darkness descended. They were Whiting and Lesser Spotted Dogfish with one Coalfish of 36cm, caught by Tina Lustig (Stackpole), a fair bet for the longest round fish pool, but no flatfish. The leader after this first day was Haydn Cole (Lamphey) with 4 sizeable fish to put him on 152 points. Second was Andrew Skeels (Lamphey) with 3 fish for 128 points with Stan Kucyj (Milford Haven), who also had 3 sizeable fish for 117 points in third, there being one point per centimetre of length and
five points per fish. Close in 4th place was Phil Lustig (Stackpole) with again 3 fish but for 110 points. So, it was really all to play for in the second leg as no great lead had been established. The second leg at the Mumbles, again starting off in the daylight, was also slow and there was not much change once darkness fell, much to everyone’s surprise in that Whiting and maybe the dogs were expected to come on strong in the dark but it never happened with the result that the first three places did not change as they all caught 3 more fish. The only scrap that occurred was at the 2 northern end pegs where 4th placed John O’Connor (Martletwy) and Shane Tucker (Milford Haven) lying in joint 8th with 1 fish after the first leg seemed to find a couple more fish with John managing to land 4 fish and Shane 5, but it wasn’t enough with John ending up with the same number of fish as Stan but 4 points less with Shane, just another few points away in 5th. So, at the final whistle, Haydn had won the coveted Gold Pin, Andrew the Silver and Stan the Bronze Pin. As expected Tina picked up the longest round fish pool with her Coalfish of 36cm and Shane’s son Daniel (Milford Haven) had the Longest Flat, the only sizeable one a Flounder, as there was also a small Dab landed, but fair play to him he did set out his stall to do this and fished for Flounders all evening.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD
Sea Angling News, April 2017
MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by James Wigglesworth
The general fishing has started to steadily improve over recent weeks here in the Bristol Channel. The wind has put a stop to several planned trips which can't be helped but on the days when the weather has allowed us to get out and play we've had some fantastic results. The start of the annual smoothound migration has commenced and although they are very thin on the ground at present we do expect their numbers to greatly increase in the next month or so. Don't miss out on the hound run as it can be fast and frantic sport once they are here in their hoards! The cod fishing has tailed off slightly as expected but we are seeing the start of the annual spring run so there’s still every chance of bagging one while fishing the inshore marks. Porlock bay will be the go to spot at this time of year as the seasons change. With the water temperature steadily increasing so will the variety of
species available for you fine people to target. Almost anything is possible from this area throughout the year so it’s well worth a look. Rays are very much a favourable target with the "Bristol Channel Ray Grand Slam" (blonde, thornback, small eyed and spotted) a very real prospect at the moment. The spurs seem to have moved off now although they should still be present in the deeper marks from Ilfracombe and the North Devon coast. The offshore marks from Watchet and Minehead are throwing up some very tidy huss and eels when fished on the smaller tides. Good luck if you do plan on getting out there this month and don't forget to let us know what leviathans you manage to tempt! Make sure you follow the facebook page or get in contact with Mr Butler at Westcoast & Watchet Tackle for an upto date fishing forecast.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage
We have had a spell of fine weather this month which has allowed us to push off shore for an early look around and it has produced some good results with double figure Pollock and a few coal fish over the wrecks, and Blonde Ray Spur dog and Huss at anchor which makes a good start to the season. Inshore there has been an early run of Plaice through Christchurch bay these fish average around 2.5lb with the best weighing in at just under 4lb, we also managed a few Dabs with the occasional Thorn back and Undulate. We haven't seen any Smoothound or Bream yet so we have that to look forward to.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, April 2017
Port Report Winds…..and it is all about them. This March has seen several settled periods when the boats have been able to reach the wrecks and find the pollack as well as the more accessible inshore marks. The ‘settled’ days have landed on spring tides which means the fishing can be hard work especially when the tide brings coloured water with it. Anglers then need to try out their lures and often find the brightest colours are required with bright orange or pure white usually being the favourites. The new Weymouth Port fishing competition, organised by Weymouth Angling Centre, has now seen some worthy entries including pollack to 18lb 3oz. By the time this report is published there may well have been even bigger entries for this species. The entry forms are available from the skippers or from the Angling Centre. It’s £5 to enter for the event which runs all year and all the entry fees go direct into the cash prizes.
Weymouth Angling Centre is very well stocked and opens at 0630 every day….so everything is there available in Weymouth for you. I see a number of ‘adverts’ on the social media for spaces on trips coming up as I write but I also see the usual confusion in the forecasts. I do hope if you have a booking before March finishes you get a chance to get to sea and I also hope that the tradition ‘April Showers’ are no more than that and are accompanied by the flimsiest of breezes. And don’t forget….don’t pester the skipper with requests for forecasts etc days in advance of your trip (1900 the night before is good!!) and clean yer muddy boots before you get onboard these highly polished and cherished craft. Thanks to everyone for coming to Weymouth and we look forward to a busy and productive April together. Matt Traverse with his first ever turbot - Duchess II

So far I have received no reports of ling or an early cod. The small tides in March or early April were always good for ling from wrecks about 15 miles from Weymouth and so there should soon be competition entries with this species. Frozen squid or mackerel (or anything really!) works with fishing on the drift often more effective than at anchor in these early months. Inshore fishing has produced much more variety than the wrecks with spotted, small-eyed, blondes and thornback rays all recorded along with pollack, whiting, turbot, cod and even bream and a garfish coming from the various banks and reefs to the east and south of Weymouth. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland will soon be featuring in these inshore catches with rays being the main target species.
Caroline with a 12 lb bull huss - Duchess II
April is a busy month. Most of the Weymouth Charter boats would have been cleaned up and ready for the new season and skippers who are too soppy to handle the chilly weather will have returned to the fray with a renewal of optimistic enthusiasm. The wrecking trips will see the first cod along with pollack and ling and the inshore marks will offer increasing variety although it will be turbot as the main quarry on The Shambles with everyone also hoping for some plaice. The general reefing grounds will see rays, hopefully smooth-hounds, dogs, pouts and a scattering of bream especially from the ‘east side’ marks. As ever with inshore fishing, there could also be cod, pollack, a bass or two, strap conger and a very lost mackerel. The Channel Island trips will be under way. Anglers will surely know by now of the very sad loss of Alderney Angling due to the many problems Mark has had to face over the years culminating in the latest freight carrying problem with the air transport into and out of Alderney which was the proverbial ‘straw breaking the camel’ back’. We have all come to rely on Mark. Anglers have enjoyed visiting his well stocked tackle shop which offered quality gear at very good prices but more importantly for you the chance to stock up on tackle depending losses and on what the fishing was going to be whilst you were on you lengthy Channel Island charter. This means you have to be even more prepared than before. Maybe some boats will carry some tackle but, using myself as an example, not all skippers will do this. I used to carry tackle for sale but getting anglers to square up at the end of the day was rarely achievable especially when the tackle items are small and inexpensive. But, if the skipper is selling for exactly what he paid in the tackle shop, anything not paid for equates to a mounting loss….. SO…..make sure you have what you need before we leave Weymouth.

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD FINS-UP During March, most of our days have been focused offshore targeting Pollock on artificial lures. Fishing has been pretty steady to be fair with the odd exceptional day when it's hard to keep up with landing net! I had heard reports of Coalfish being caught so was hopeful we would stumble across one at some point. Only a small fish of 5lb was caught but was still great to see, this was landed by Paul Turner from Bristol. Late February in to early March saw stormy weather. The boat was tied up for 15 days in row. Unfortunately this subsequently coincided with building tides which discoloured the water reducing the visabilty. Finding a bit of clear water has been essential so the fish can see the lures. As the tides start to get smaller, (providing the weather stays settled) visability will continue to improve and in turn so will the catch rate.
We had are first attempt at Turbot on the Shambles. As expected it was pretty slow with only a few small specimens been caught. I expect over the coming weeks, catches will improve. I have some mid week individual spaces left on dedicated Turbot days. If you fancy having a crack at the king of the flat fish, check out my diary on deep sea or Charter Boats UK. I am hoping to see the first of the cod showing on the wrecks very soon along with more frequent and bigger Ling. Be nice to have a repeat of the 2015 cod season where we saw frequent and good numbers! Still a lot to fish for! Happy days ahead! COMPETITION - EVERY MONTH WE WILL BE GIVING AWAY ONE OF OUR NEW FINS-UP HODDIES TO WHO EVER CATCHES THE BEST FISH.

SPECIES LEAGUE The Species League was formed in 2002 when a small group of friends decided to organise a species hunt, once a month on a Friday. Since then the group has grown and now has a keen membership of 30 with over 800 followers on Facebook. The League holds twelve events per year made up of ten trips out of Beer, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Poole, Langstone and Minehead and then a final weekend session that this year will be out of Penzance. The fishing is varied, often using 4 or 5 different fishing techniques per trip and takes in most species, from rays, congers and tope, down to the mini-species and everything in between. Occasionally a trip will target one specific species, such as an evening trip for sole. The League has a two-hook rule and bait packs are supplied by local tackle shops in an attempt to keep the cost down. The main aim of the League, other than catching as many different species as possible, is to have fun. A fish of a few centimetres can bring just as big a grin to an anglers face as a two metre one can. The first competition of 2017 took place on the 17th of February, when 27 keen anglers set out from Weymouth in ideal conditions aboard Meerkat, Wild Frontier and RW2. Fish caught included Spurdogs, Congers, Huss, Thornback, Spotted and Undulate rays, Pout and Dogfish. Congratulations go to Perry Dack who came top overall and to the other two boat winners, Vernon Allen and Billy Short. The next League event is on Friday 31st of March out of Lyme Regis with 3 boatful’s of anglers targeting Huss, Pollack and Whiting, with the chance of an early Plaice or two. League standings after 1 trip are; 1st Parry Dack 8 species 2. Ray Evans 7 species 3. Vernon Allen 6 species 4. Billy Cann 6 species 5. Richard Ferre 5 species 6. Darren Phillips 5 species 7. Gary Dennis 5 species 8. John Bellamy 5 species

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand
SPRING IS IN THE AIR What a long winter it’s been, the great news is that the daffodil has flowered in the hedge lines, bringing Spring in the air along Chesil. Yay! March and April mark the time when many of us put our heavy winter rods away along with all the Cod rigs back in the shed and unleash the light kit, small hooks and shiny rigs ready for the arrival of the flatties. Even though the fish will be spent (Skinny) early in the season it is still lovely to go out and target this beautiful Orange spotted creature by day. I’ve been out twice in the last week with great success and plenty of small Plaice up to 1lb 4oz which is the average size for this time of year. To be fair the big tides have made the conditions tricky since the arrival of the early Plaice as the tide has made the water rather dirty up to about 300 yards. On a less than positive note, I’ve lost a few hooks due to the dreaded Spider crab invasion, which is a little early but who knows what’s going on with the seasons these days. I see many anglers using all sorts of weird and wonderful Plaice loop and clip down rigs but in my eyes its best to go simple as I believe Plaice fishing on Chesil is all about moving baits at distance, so all these beads and attractors slow the cast and with that decrease the distance. Also, there is nothing worse than spending 30 mins making this super loop rig when a Spider Crab comes along and bites off the bottom hook meaning you can’t clip the rigs down
making it useless, we have all been there. Whilst on this subject, I often get asked what I do to combat this and its simple, just go basic with many of the top anglers using a simple up and over rig without any beads at all, its personal preference but I don’t use any beads as I feel they attract the spiders more and make the cast drag which decreases the range. Also, it makes fishing a lower cost sport without losing rigs and beads every cast and if you are unlucky and do get a Spider strike you can just tie another hook on and off you go. Remember this fish loves a moving bait so drop the grip leads and purchase yourself some plain rolling leads. There are many rolling lead variations but just get the bait moving in the tide and I can assure you your catch rate will increase as you are not relying on the Plaice to find your baits you are finding them by covering more area. It’s been great to see the Undulate Rays turning up in numbers along Abbotsbury in the last few weeks but do remember they normally feed in as close as 40 yards on big fish baits, with Mackerel and Bluey being most anglers favourite or a Pouting if you can get one, there have been some early Smooth Hounds running the full beach smashing Rag and crab baits. We have moved into the most exciting time of the year so do yourself a favour and visit the mighty shingle as you honestly could land anything from a 10lb Cod or a 4lb Plaice Tight lines and thanks for all your photos and reports
