The Government’s Hendry report issued today has given a cautious backing for the financial case for tidal lagoons but it failed to examine the environmental impact of these colossal developments or to consider alternative technologies to generate tidal power which are currently being developed. The report also bases its assessment of the economics on a 120 year lifetime – double the 60 years initially suggested by the developers – which is unrealistic due to the high risk of the lagoons filling with sediment well before the year 2140, by which time there will inevitably have been technological developments for renewable power generation which will make lagoon technology seem like ancient history. Natural Resources Wales has already concluded [note 1] that there could be a major adverse impact on fish populations, such as fragile salmon and sea trout stocks, from the currently-proposed Swansea Bay lagoon design. The regulator has indicated that it would not be able to grant the project the Marine Licence it needs to go ahead based on the evidence supplied to date by developers Tidal Lagoon Power. The Swansea scheme only begins to make any economic sense at all if the much larger lagoon near Cardiff were also to be constructed, but this is sited

in an even more sensitive environmental area than Swansea Bay, with several international conservation designations related to salmon, shad, eels and lamprey, as well as rare marine habitats which could be destroyed. In 2010, a report to the then Department of Energy and Climate Change [note 2] concluded that tidal lagoons in the Severn Estuary could cause the extinction of some of these fish populations. In 2015, Natural Resources Wales indicated that these conclusions were still valid. Major concerns have also been raised by expert tidal geomorphologists about the effect of the lagoons on sediment deposition in the silt-laden waters of the Severn estuary, with some suggesting that the lifespan of the lagoons should be shortened to one or two decades rather than the 95 years on which the Hendry report bases its calculations of value for money, which would blow the economic case for public support out of the water. Large amounts of energy would be expended mining and transporting vast quantities of rock from the proposed quarry site in Cornwall – the use of which has also been successfully challenged in the courts by local community and environmental groups in the area

– before any energy is generated from the tides. Building such huge developments in the Severn Estuary could prevent the exploitation of tidal energy by alternative, more benign technologies which are currently in development and others which have not yet been developed. There is undoubtedly great potential for renewable energy generation around the UK coastline, but this should only be permitted if it can be proven not to cause unacceptable damage to the environment. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “Tidal Lagoon Power has done a first rate job at spinning this project politically, but the company has failed spectacularly to quantify convincingly the impacts on sediment deposition, local communities, wildlife and fisheries, which are of particular interest to our members. The Government should avoid giving its backing to what could be a colossal series of white elephants before carrying out a more strategic assessment of the sustainable management of the Severn Estuary and other areas with large tidal ranges around the UK. It is impossible to see how lagoons could be built while meeting the government’s headline commitment to leave the environment in a better state for the next generation.”

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Not really much to report this month with anglers reluctant to spend money on charter trips after an expensive Christmas and waiting for that next pay check, anglers that have ventured out have had several rays lots of whiting but very little cod they really have done a vanishing act this year. Dabs have been plentiful mostly in the blackwater area you just need to reduce the bait size & hook size and you will catch them with some nice fish amongst them too. The rivers and estuaries are stuffed with herrings, once the bread and butter of ports like Brightlingsea and west Mersea in fact as a kid I can remember just,

Russian factory ships in the estuary’s loading up from small fishing boats full of herrings to be canned and sold in Europe but now the only demand is as fishing bait for the spring summer ray fishing. I think young women nower days would not know what to do with them, if it’s not in a box and covered in bread crumbs with birds eye written on it they are baffled. So summing up there are fish to catch but not the ones perhaps anglers want but remember if you don’t support the charter boats in the tough times they may not be there in the good times.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

A fitting turn-out of 121 seniors and 25 juniors fished the Sam Smale Memorial Flounder Competition hosted by South West Sea Baits. The high number of anglers fishing this comp showed the high regard that local anglers held for Sam. Fishing a mark in the Kingsbridge Estuary the comp was won by Tony Martin with a fish of 3lb 8dm’s which pocketed him £500 and an AFAW Estuary Rod. Second place went to Paul Filip with a fish of 2-11 and third to Ben Jones with a fish of 2-6. Rising Castaways SAC star Reuben Green won the junior section with a nice fish of 2-0.

who raised the bar to 11-5. Alan Hobbs of Roving Rods SAC also managed a nice spur of 9-3. Clovelly Pier is a good mark to try for the spurs but PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME! This is private property and there is a real chance that access could be closed if the rubbish problems there persist.

Having access to peeler crab, myself and several friends decided to try the Flow Point/Red Rocks area of the River Teign. Despite catching 28 flounder between us the largest we could muster was only 1-12. This seems to sum-up the flounder season this year with lots of small fish being caught but very few larger specimens. Hopefully next winter will see the return of the 3lb’ers.

The last round of the 2016/17 Plymouth Shore League saw Halwell Projects/Pot Black crowned as Division 1 Champions whilst Castaways Coastal Warriors won the Division 2 title. Some very good fish were recorded during the last match with the top specimen being a Thornback Ray of 12-2 caught from Slapton by Danny Clegg of the Rodbenders Team. Matt Parry and Pat Fulton both of Castaways SAC recorded some cracking bullhuss of 11-11 and 11-10 respectively. With February traditionally being a bit of a slow month on the fishing front it’s probably worth spending some time going after the ‘bullies’ if you are looking for specimen fish.

With the local fishing being on the slow side, many Plymouth anglers have been making the journey up to the Bristol Channel shore line which has been experiencing some excellent blonde ray fishing. Unattached local angler Stephen Bromilow landed a cracking blonde of just under 20lb during an evening session at Minehead’s Gas Works Beach whilst Scott Clark of Rodbenders SAC registered blondes up to 16lb. In addition to blondes I have heard that small good small eyed rays have also been caught by those fishing Selworthy Sands.

One fish that does seem to be about in large numbers are the whiting. Having heard of a few good fish being caught during the last round of the Torbay Shore League I decided to engage in the honoured age-old tradition of ‘shadow chasing’ (something us Plymouth anglers are pretty good at) and whilst I didn’t find any speci’s at Hope Nose I was rewarded with stacks of whiting to 1-4. There were so many there that it was impossible to keep two rods in the water. Hopefully they hang around a bit longer and I will certainly be giving it another try for that elusive 2lb’er.

In addition to the excellent ray sport, anglers making the journey to North Devon rock marks have also been finding some good spurs. Mark Bryce set a new club record for Rodbenders SAC with a nice spur of 11lb only for it to be beaten minutes later by Scott Clark

Not much to report from the boats this month, with Sea Angler 2 currently out of the water and returning shortly. Hopefully I’ll be able to report on some big winter wreck caught Pollack next month. Happy dipping.

Size Matters is a 45ft Guimond from Canada, it is one of the most famous charter boats on the south coast, it has been owned and skippered by Graham Hannaford from the day he helped build it back in 2001. The boat has a very good reputation with anglers all over the UK for catching big Sharks, Conger, Ling, Cod, Pollack and many more. Back in March 2016 Kevin Mckie a charter skipper from Liverpool and good friend of Grahams for over 20 years bought Size Matters and the business Graham had built up over 40 years, it was time for Graham to retire and enjoy his time more. Kevin had some very big boots to fill if he was going to make it on the south coast as a respected charter skipper. When Kevin took over Graham gave Kevin some very important advice, don't worry about what other boats

About The Skipper Kevin has been fishing all his life he owned his first boat when he was 17, he has traveled and fished all over the world catching Sharks to 1700lb, Tuna to 800lb, Stingray to 300lb, Halibut to 290lb, White Sturgeon to 275lb, Marlin to 260lb, Catfish to 165lb, Grouper to 150lb, Amberjack to 90lb, Oil fish to 80lb Conger to 86lb and Cod to 74lb. He is also a guide for Sportquest holidays, with all this fishing knowledge you know you are in safe hands when fishing with him. On April 1st Size Matters will start its charter season from Plymouth and if last year is anything to go by his anglers are in for some very good fishing.

don't worry about what other boats are catching just let your fishing do the talking!!! Over the next six months Kevin went on to help his anglers catch some cracking fish. He also did five multi day Channel Island trips targeting Turbot and Brill on the banks, best day was 27 to 9lb. Most of Kevin's Wrecking trips are fishing 30 to 60 miles from Plymouth. Sharking, he heads out 25 to 40 miles. Reefing, fishing up to 20 miles out targeting over 30 different species. On October 15th 2016 Kevin steamed Size Matters to Liverpool for the winter season to target Cod, Rays, Whiting and Dabs on the Mersey. Already this year he has had his anglers catching over 50 cod a day to 15lb 8oz and over 50 Rays a day to 13lb 5oz. Not too bad only 400 yards from shore.

Here is a full list of individual or small group dates this season from Plymouth. All charters are 12 hour trips sailing at 7am to 7pm, from Sutton harbour (post code PL1 2LR) or Mount batten jetty (post code PL9 9SJ free parking). SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

The whiting fishing really turned on in late December with the biggest average stamp of fish I think I’ve ever seen off Poole. Fish between 3-4lb being caught two at a time is good fun on the light tackle. As I’m starting to see more and more markings of sprats on the sounder the whiting seem to be getting fatter and fatter, they really are one of the nicest eating fish around I just wish they stuck around for longer. Not put off by the small baits we have seen some smashing cod on the whiting gear, always putting up a hell of scrap. As well as the target species we have also seen a lot of mixed fish on the cod baits. Thornbacks, undulates, congers, smoothound and

spotty rays are all in abundance. One of the highlights have been some of the big bass that continue to pop their heads up. Shane Barlow landed a monster 15lber whilst fishing in the bay with a squid and cuttlefish bait, the second biggest one we have ever seen. Fish of the Year for 2016 went to Pete Read for his 25lb 4oz spurdog caught in March, a brilliant catch even if she was a little camera shy before being returned. We have done our first trip out to the banks with success landing spurs to over 20lb and blonde rays as well. We look forward to doing more of this in the coming weeks.

POOLE & SWANAGE / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 9

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Welcome to the New Year, over the Christmas period the weather was reasonably settled allowing the boats to venture out in search of good fishing, there were plenty of congers varying from very small to those in excess of 65lb, local angler Neil Wilson had an epic battle with a big eel using 4m long rod and a fixed spool whilst fishing for whiting after a 20 minute fight and a very tired angler an eel in excess of 60lb broke the surface. The whiting fishing has been spectacular this season in quality and quantity with treble shots of 2lb to 3lb fish best fish on board this year is one of 4lb 2 ozs falling to M Adcock. Tony Way Poole’s very own Cod Father produced another cracking Cod of 28lb fishing from his own boat Two Ways with his son Jason. Pete landed a PB Cod of 10lb and Duncan Purchase skipper of Aries 11 landed a plump Cod of 15lb and a nice Allis Shad. True Blue skipper Steve Porter whilst waiting for the delivery of his new Cheetah Catamaran accepted an invitation to have a busman’s holiday and with a few of his regular

crew mates had an enjoyable days fishing catching some quality Whiting to 3lb 8ozs plenty of small eels and as a bonus Keith Humphreys landed a 10lb Cod. Hopefully by the time of reading this Steve will have his new boat and be back fishing. The Flounder fishing has failed to live up to last year’s quality with far fewer fish being landed and competition results well down. When the weather and tide allowed some boats ventured off to the outer marks and those on board the Mistress Linda were rewarded with some great sport with Spurdogs up to 20lb 7 ozs (C Bratcher) along with several Tope, Bull Huss and 35 or more eels, local angler Mark Turner set a new PB Spur of 18lb 4ozs. Matt Rowe skipper of Piscary landed a 12lb Ling and his crew were kept very busy with 30 + eels. As we look ahead to February the offshore Banks will be at their best for Rays and Spurdogs and for those venturing further off to sea we should start to see the arrival of Pollack on the wrecks.

After another disappointing night fishing the Junior Flounder League in Poole harbour. Paul Driver took his son Curtis Aged 10 out to use the worm up and hopefully find a few Flounder. The Flounder fishing has been poor this year in the harbour due to all the netting going on legal or not, using Flounder for Crab Pots is killing the sport for rod and line anglers and hopes were not very high. Saying all that we did

manage to catch a few on the secret spot which gave Curtis a nice brace of 2lb 2oz and 2lb 6oz. His Father not to be out done for once managed four, the largest being 2lb 13 1/2oz. The combined total being six fish for 10lb 3 1/2oz a rare good night Flounder fishing. Curtis was over the moon to catch the large Flounder and had a great night running up and down the rocks landing the fish, he cant wait to go again.

Sea Angling News, February 2017 West Bay SAC Jurassic League Final Christmas Eve 2016 The best tide for the last match of West Bay S.A.C.’s junior section happened to occur on Christmas Eve so there was a slight concern over how many might attend but to everyone’s surprise a healthy turn out of 12 junior members signed on to fish the final of the Jurassic League, a four-match competition fished over the last two months of the year. Despite plenty of baits in the water, fishing proved to be rather slow until Jamie Salvador Swords landed a sizeable flounder of 335 g to give him a strong early lead. With nearly half the entry ending the match with no fish at all, Ollie Butler offered the only real challenge with a sizeable rockling and pout but was pushed into third spot by the best pollack of the season and indeed a junior species league record weighing 294 g. The captor was Owen Swatridge and as the junior matches are always fished during mid day, it was very unusual to see a pollack of this size. All fish were returned to the sea.

Christmas Hat Competition Best junior: James Lawrence Best parent: Paul Lynham. Sponsors for the league: Nigel and Jane Smith, Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw, Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle, Richard, Frances Kitchin and Hilary Smith. Also thanks to Hilary Smith, Richard Daw and Andrea Joy for setting up the hall.

As usual there was a presentation back at the Salthouse where lots of prizes were on display and a tasty spread kindly supplied by the Punch and Judy Bakery. On top of extra prizes on the the day there was also a competition for the ‘best Christmas hat’ sponsored by Richard Daw. This last presentation was an extra special event as it was also the retiring junior secretary’s last match. Roger ‘Hoot’ Guppy’s involvement with the junior section started back in 1995 when he assisted the junior secretary at that time, Ian Draper, before taking over the role himself in 2005. The assembled juniors, family and friends enjoyed live music from Defoe and Rich from the ‘Boarding Crew’ and once all the results were completed, the presentations began. Firstly, prizes for that day were presented and on top of the usual prizes, the top three were presented Christmas hampers kindly donated by Hilary Smith. The last match was won by Jamie Salvador Swords. Then the prize giving for the league took place with everyone attending winning tackle prizes. This year’s Jurassic League Trophy was won by Robbie Hall with the runner–up trophy going to Jack Parkman. Full results below. After proceedings ended, Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw took the floor and thanked the retiring junior secretary for all his work with the junior section before presenting presents and a voucher from the juniors, parents, members and friends and also an enormous cake from Steve and Sally Lawrence at Punch and Judy. Roger Guppy thanked everyone for their kindness and generosity including Defoe and Rich for the music, Andrea Joy for kitchen duties, Punch and Judy bakery for catering and a special thank you to Hilary Smith and Richard Daw for organising such a special send off. Special thanks was also given for all the help and assistance that Richard Daw had contributed to the junior section over a considerable number of years.

LDSFC On the 8th of January 2017 seven club members left Poole Quay aboard Dick Peckhams charter boat “Strongbow”for a day’s recreational fishing organised by Robin Lane. With the neap tide, lack of wind and conditions looking good, the plan was to head to a mark 6 miles out and fish for cod and whiting. Once anchored and baits in water Malcolm Gerrish had the first fish of the day, a whiting which was soon followed by a steady stream of catches of similar fish by all. Robin Lane who had been fishing with big baits in the hope of a cod finally had a good bite and wound in not the cod but a large conger eel. Unfortunately it had taken skipper Dicks hook and tangled Robin’s line, but it saved Dick the problem of winding up. Whiting proved to be the mainstay of the day with catch size steadily getting larger, the best being Anton Emblen 2lb 5oz, Brian Dawkins 2lb 7oz, Robin Lane 2lb 13oz, Roland Blomfield 3lb 1oz and biggest of the day Derek Smith 3lb 12oz. Arran Harmer also had a good sized conger which was released. A change of species for Malcolm was a Brill of 1lb 3oz.

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Anglers have been searching for spurdog a species that has become a frequent winter visitor to the shoreline over recent seasons. The increasing population of these members of the shark family has been welcome, as they seem to have filled the niche that was once occupied by cod. So far this winter reports of decent sized cod have been virtually non-existent which is surprising as there have been some good catches made up channel around Minehead. Top spurdog haul was made by Michael Toogood who fished a local shore mark in the early hours to make a terrific haul of eight spurdog seven of them double figure fish the best 13lb 4oz. Jon Patten landed a fine spur of 14lb. Other notable spurdog included an 11lb 10oz spur for Ross Stanway, 11lb 1oz for Dan Miles Redmore, 11lb 6oz to David Alsop, Chay Boggis 10lb and Ollie Passmore 9lb 4oz. Anglers targeting the spurdog have had to endure the constant stream of dogfish that find the bait first. Occasionally anglers land a better than average dogfish close to the area specimen weight of 3lb. A dogfish of 2lb 14oz for Ross Stanway and a 2lb 11oz fish to Rob Scoines were among the better doggies reported. Nathan Clements secured the top two places on Bideford Angling Clubs monthly rover with dogfish of 2lb 101/2oz and 2lb 9oz. Quality whiting have brought a smile to several anglers’ faces with Dan Spearman landing a fine

whiting of 1lb 14oz and Rob Scoines a whiting of 1lb 12oz. Colin Emery secured the top three spots in Combe Martin SAC’s New Years Day competition with a specimen bull huss scaling 10lb 12oz and a plump dogfish of 3lb 2oz and a conger of 17lb 4oz. George Stavrakopoulos is a keen species enthusiast and enjoys trips to Ilfracombe Pier. Their latest venture saw them land whiting, pouting, poor cod, pollack, shanny smelt, rock goby, 3 bearded rockling, shore rockling, conger, tadpole fish and a cling fish it was non stop action. A big surprise was the sight of four big mackerel trapped alive in the pool behind the pier. These out of season visitors were soon caught and dispatched by local anglers who either enjoyed a tasty meal some quality bait for the freezer. There was a time when the mullet fishing season started in the late spring and finished in the late autumn. Times have changed with these fish now caught all through the year. Time and experimentation could well reveal far more marks to catch these hard fighting silver ghosts during the colder months? Daniel Welch set out after winter mullet and landed a pleasing grey mullet of 3lb 14oz. Boat sport has been good when anglers have ventured out on Ilfracombe Charter Boat Bluefin with spurdog, bull huss and conger plentiful.

ALDERNEY

ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding Apologies for no report in last months issue. I was in Norway and lost track of time and missed the deadline!! We had a trip to the wonderful Skarnsundet Fjordcentre run by the enigmatic Phill Dale. We have done around 7 or 8 trips now but the last 3 we have done midDecember time – freezing cold but great fishing. To be fair though the Trondheim fjords do fish well all year too, just the bigger fish more consistent in the winter from the shore. This trip though we missed the big big Cod as temperatures hadn’t got cold enough but lots of teen fish, I was fortunate enough to have 2 Cod of 18lb which are great shore fish but the bonus was between our group we had 8 Halibut with the best at 38lb falling to Darren Braby. We also had Coalfish to 9lb, Haddock to 6lb and numerous other species. The two new lads were over whelmed by the quality of the fishing. Its great shore fishing by any standards! Anyway, I digress from my Alderney report! Fishing has been pretty good to be fair. It’s been a great period for the squid which always heralds good fishing for Tope, Undulate Rays, Smoothounds, Conger Eels and Huss. Tope have not quite been as good as last year

though but the rest has. Plenty of small strap Eels to 20lb 2oz best reported. Plenty of Huss with doubles frequently reported and best Undulate is 15lb+. Like everywhere else the Undulate Rays turning up everywhere – Platte Saline becoming a hot spot now! Smoothounds to 7lb reported too. At the other end of the scale for the edible fish – some good numbers of Red Mullet around, not many Sole reported though but there is the odd fish. Plenty of small Black Bream reported, no reports of Couches though which is strange as for a couple of years now we have seen small ones virtually all year. Bass also being caught on the bottom baits with worm and local squid baits. One or two still hitting the lures too but get harder this time of year. Garfish on the float, lots of Thick Lippeds about, rafting up in the harbour but can’t see many big fish amongst them.

Marcus Odoli had this one - he's shy!!

We all love a Red Mullet!

Many of you will be aware Alderney Angling is closing down, get on the website and grab some bargains and if you are coming over we are happy to hold paid for orders for your arrival. On that subject, that is you lads visiting – rather looking forward to the boat season!!

Stephen Cosheril with one of his better Eelsm he has been catching. Inset: Best Conger reported recently, 20lb 2oz for Darren Braby

A selfie doesn't do this fish justice for Darren Braby - 15lb 5oz

A 10lb 3oz huss for Darren Braby, one of lots of doubles caught

Angling Trust, Marine Wyvern Region Open Shore Slapton, South Devon, on 8th January 2017 The South West’s first major event in the 2017 attracted 128 anglers to the South Hams to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival at the popular venue on Slapton Beach. The weather was good with a light offshore wind but the calm conditions resulted in fewer fish than normal being brought to the scales. However Slapton rarely disappoints and some very good fish, including a dab of 1.390 lbs which equated to specimen weight of 139%: a Thornback ray of 11.865lbs or 118.65%; a Spotted Ray of 4.525.lbs or 90.30% and good quality Dogfish and Mackerel caught during daylight and Whiting as usual in the last two hours. The results were announced within half an hour of the close of scales at 6.45 pm at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham. The main sponsor was Julian Shambrook of Anyfish Anywhere Ltd, a major fishing tackle manufacturer, based in Torquay and Tom Worthy of Plymouth Angling and these were thanked for their continued support as were the competitors many of who had travelled from Watchet, Bristol, Weymouth and beyond. Any money raised, less expenses, from the event will be invested in the work of the Region on behalf of sea all anglers. Thanks were also extended to the Church House Inn for their hospitality. The worthy winner was local unattached angler John Pollard from Plymouth with a combination of a Lesser Spotted Dogfish and a Dab to total 194.50 % points. He was presented with the top prize of £200 cash and the Brixham Bowl. The other tackle prizes were valued at over £800 and were awarded down to 13th place, these were announced by the Chairman of the Wyvern Region Alex Parker, and Julian Shambrook of “Anyfish Anywhere” presented the prizes. All fish brought to the scales were returned or used for the table. The Division promotes the Angling Trust “Take Five” anti litter campaign and encourage all anglers to leave the beaches cleaner than they found them. The organisers are grateful to the local fisherman who once again, removed his pots seaward to prevent any inconvenience or conflict with the anglers. This cooperation between the fishing sectors bodes well for the future as increasing pressure is brought to bear on all interests within the inshore fisheries.

DARTMOUTH / INTERNATIONAL

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Chris Snow This month so far has seen the whiting in force all a long the region with most of the larger fish species doing a disappearing act . The calm weather has seen plaice continuing to be caught at Seaford and Hove with some up to 1lb1/2 , flounders still being caught in the rivers to rag and lug baits although numbers

will increase over the next month .There has been an influx of large pout on Worthing Pier not a great fish but have been some to nearly 2lb which has in recent years been a rarity . Hopefully we get a stir up and some strong winds to colour the water and we may see some better fish being caught .

Sea Angling News, February 2017

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

TELBOY'S TACKLE AMLWCH, ANGLESEY

Since the last issue we have had xmas and new year so a busy period for most with lots of excesses, hopefully Santa was kind and you all received a new rod or reel. The winds have been fairly light but weekend tides have been either neaps or springs which are not normally the best out of Burnham, nevertheless some decent fish have still been landed. Winter fishing is normally all about the cod and whilst there are a fair number around it is the whiting fishing that is much improved on previous years. By scaling down your hooks slightly there are good numbers to be caught with some exceeding 2lb though mainly in the 12oz to 1lb 8oz bracket. Two boats made it out on 27th December and steamed down to Watchet where lots of whiting, a few cod, thornies, conger and dogs kept them busy. The best of the day was a cod of 16lb 1oz for Andy Georgiou and a whiting of 1lb 12oz for Martin Quinn. The following day three boats made it out and had a little comp amongst themselves. It's funny how two days are never the same and the guys that went back down to Watchet had a slower day but the boat that stayed in the bay did ok with Dave Tether landing a whiting of 1lb 15oz and a cod of 6lb to take the kitty. The first action of 2017 saw seven boats launching, some earlier than others on the 7th of Jan. It was a foggy start which lifted for a spell allowing the sun to warm us up slightly before the fog dropped back down

mid afternoon. Fishing was a little slow with the neap tide but there were still a few codling, whiting and rays to keep us entertained. Nigel Devey and his sons ended up in Porlock bay in the quest to find something decent and were rewarded with a spurdog of 15lb for Aaron and a Blonde of 13lb 8 for James. Sunday 22nd saw 7 boats and 15 anglers try their luck on another very small tide and all found the fishing slow with only 3 codling landed, a few thornies, dogs, congers, and whiting. Roy Saxby took the pot with his codling of 4lb 10oz and Jeff Clarke had an eel in excess of 20lb. Hopefully the poor fishing was down to the large number of sprats showing on the sounder as the codling and whiting we caught coughed a few up. Fish of the month for December was won by Dave Tether with a whiting of 2lb and 94%. The next competition is the Fred Peters Trophy on Sunday 26th February Our next club meeting is on Thursday 16th February at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, February 2017

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Once again, light winds and fair seas have meant that the Minehead boats have been fortunate enough to get to sea on many charters. The excellent fishing has delighted lots of anglers who visit our port from far and wide. Of course, cod are the usual target with many brilliant specimens being taken. Double figure fish are at present commonplace with the odd twenty plus making an appearance from most recognised inshore marks. With the herrings and sprats finally finishing their spawning program and retreating back out of the Channel, the cod will now be targeting the bottom food giving our anglers a far better chance of an encounter. Whiting also featuring in every charter with many good fish to well over the three pound mark plentiful. Offshore grounds are still producing good numbers of spurdogs with Alykat regular Jon Mattick landing our best so far at smack on 20lb. Though a potential BC record, the fish was immediately returned to shed her pups and live to fight

another day. It seems a shame in these days of active conservation programmes that a fish still has to be murdered to claim a record, how archaic is that?? Can a fish not be weighed on certificated scales, witnessed by two persons, photographed and returned for the good of life?? I think it's about time the powers that be got their heads together and revised this ridiculous situation. Over the past thirty odd years I have run many competitions aboard Alykat some of which involve lots of prize money. Most fish are returned with the exception of those required for the table ( yes we still have teeth for the purpose of eating meat!) and never has there been any argument. Just a thought, maybe it's too complicated for some to work out!!! Minehead boats will still be returning great catches for the foreseeable future, weather permitting so if you fancy a go give us a ring and we will, get you amongst the fish!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Its been nearly several weeks since last months shore report due to an early Christmas print date. Simply put. What an awesome end of 2016 and A superb start to 2017 it was. Huge whiting, fat cod, pockets of codling, lively spur dogs and epic proportions of quality blonde rays all heavily featuring in catches and not to mention decent bullhuss, conger eels and a few

exceptional bass caught for good measure. Rather than using up valuable space this month in reporting this and that, I felt it only right to squeeze in as many photos of catches as possible. I personally hope 2017 can continue to spoil us even more over the coming months with some superb sport. Tight lines and happy hunting...

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs As we moved in to January, we saw the arrival of some large Whiting shoals, with some real specimens amongst them. Stuffed with sprats, reports were coming in of fish reaching the 3 -5lb mark. If you want to target these, Mackerel, is by far one of the better baits, along with squid, pout and even Whiting. Present any of these on a set of hokeyes and you won't go far wrong. The Cod do seem to be thinning out,but there are still

some good fish about. Out deep: Spurdog are showing in good numbers along with plenty of Conger eels as they move back into deeper water.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This winter Cod season didn't live up to expectations, with the first half fishing really well and the second half not producing the amount of Cod we have come to expect (we are spoilt some years) that's not to say there wasn't any fish at all, there was the occasional one or two around the 9lb to 14lb which was a very welcome site, but what was missing was the number of 30lb plus fish that we have come to rely on (However there is still time) Channel Whiting were the target specie for some anglers and on occasions saved the day with some fish weighing in at over 5lb, not great numbers but enough to keep everyone happy. Other fish on the scene were Conger Undulates, Thornback ray and the occasional Turbot.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Port Report January’s weather has contained days just like the sort of traditional ‘winter’s days’ we knew in the ‘old days’! Very cold. Crisp. Windless. Perfect for offshore wrecking for Pollack and inshore fishing for whiting.

don’t underestimate the effects of zero temperatures and chill factors and keep an eye on your angling buddies….helicopter rescue lifts are not much fun in winter!

The Weymouth charter fleet have enjoyed a much better start to the year than last year’s opening month with its continuous winds and mountainous seas. The reports on the fishing have been very good with stacks of whiting to a very impressive 4lb 4oz, a sprinkling of small cod, dogs, pout and a variety of rays with undulate, blondes and spotted featuring from the various inshore marks.

Keep warm and enjoy the productive fishing that continues to be experienced out of Weymouth. Let’s hope for some more settled weather and big pollack out on the wrecks and the first turbot to come from The Shambles.

The latest wrecking trips have been very productive with pollack, a few of which have been double figures with the promise of bigger fish to come.

Because of the shortage of mackerel throughout the year, I am sure that anglers have invested in an extra deep freezer and vacuum packer for 2017 and have their cool boxes and ice packs ready for when the mackerel do arrive. And, of course, shopping around for better priced squid to alleviate the pain of paying £25 for a 5lb box of squid is a wise thing to be doing…if you can get it anywhere that is. I do not think that many charter boat anglers appreciate just how expensive bait has become….it really is important to be planning ahead and try to source the bait from any source that can be found. As I write, I see that the weather forecasts for this weekend and for days next week are showing very light winds and very low temperatures. The thermal clothing now available really is amazing and will allow you to keep warm especially when paired up with floatation suits and thermal hats, boots and gloves. It really is extremely easy to become hypothermic and it is a killer….believe me, it is scary to see how quickly people can succumb at sea. So,

So…what do we expect in February? Many years ago, in the 70’s, I used to dread the fishing in February. There were days when a dogfish was very welcome. But this has changed. Over recent years, February has fished well for bass from both Heads east and west of Weymouth. The banks, the Adamant in particular, has been great for offering varied fishing with the whiting being the main species but conger joining in with the rays and smoothound as well as the more expected dogs and pout.

Wrecking for pollack is at its best in the January to April period with a good chance of ling towards the end of the month on frozen mackerel or squid baits.

Whiting - Duchess II

Thank you for coming to Weymouth and supporting the Weymouth Charter fleet. Keep an eye out for the latest Weymouth competitions and events that are currently being planned for 2017 and due to be announced…details are always available from the central information hub known as the Weymouth Angling Centre.

Reports from the Channel Islands say that the turbot and brill fishing is also good. Whilst it may seem strange to mention this here, there are some very early season trips planned for February to the Islands. It will be very interesting to see how they work out…I hope the weather warms up a bit though as I do recall Chris Tett (Peace and Plenty) and myself going to Guernsey in early March one year….and it was freezing kipping on the boat despite the multi layers of clothing we were wearing in out bunks.

The banks to the west of Portland have been excellent for blonde rays and there is a very realistic chance of turbot and brill taking the baits intended for the rays. There is a slight increase in interest for anchoring sessions especially with the various flatfish that were caught in 2016 so perhaps 2017 will see more anchoring sessions on the many varied marks around the Weymouth and Portland area. After all, you never know what you will catch at anchor as compared to the more predictable drift fishing which tends to target definite species.

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD FINS-UP Fins-up spent the first part of the month out of the water. Time For routine maintenance and a good spruce up ready for 2017 but firstly, more importantly the winter pollock fishing. Bitterly cold days didn't deter the anglers and their perseverance paid off. First-rate double figure Pollock were landed in good numbers. The larger fish been between 12lb -16lb mark. The biggest so far this year for Fins-up weighed in at a whopping 17lb. A fantastic start to the new year. Long may it last!

Weymouth Bay channel whiting is still very consistent along with rays, huss and congers. Still a few squid around but I expect these will be gone by the end of the month. Encouraging to see some of the local junior anglers on their school holidays braving the winter weather. It is so rewarding witnessing the younger generation beating their personal bests and seeing different species for the first time After all they are the future of the sport.

ANGLING TRUST WELCOMES INCREASED PROTECTION FOR CORNWALL’S FISH STOCKS

published a dossier of evidence in support of such a change. Regulation has fallen behind netting technology and consequently the current legislation is outdated and fails to offer sufficient protection to vulnerable fish stocks, many of which use estuaries as key nursery or spawning areas. The Inshore Fishery & Conservation Authorities are required to review their byelaws on an ongoing basis to ensure they are relevant and fit for purpose and the Angling Trust will continue to press for increased protection for threatened fish stocks through this process. The Devon and Severn IFCA also consulted on a very similar byelaw but, despite an extensive open consultation period that saw the vast majority of responses in favour of increased protection for fish stocks from netting, the byelaw failed to proceed beyond the IFCA and was sent back to the committee for changes. This followed a debacle during the committee meeting on December 9th where a member of the general public (a representative of commercial fishermen) was allowed to address the committee directly, possibly in breach of due process. The Angling Trust and Fish Legal are investigating further. David Mitchell, Angling Trust Head of Marine, said: “The Cornwall IFCA has a duty to manage inshore fisheries sustainably and to secure the right balance between social, economic and environmental considerations. The new byelaw will contribute to achieving this and we and the many thousands of anglers throughout Cornwall and beyond very much welcome Cornwall’s rivers and estuaries being net free in the future”.

Gilthead beam are a popular recreational fish and one species that will benefit from increased protection through the byelaw. The Angling Trust has welcomed the successful procession of a new byelaw effectively banning netting in Cornwall’s rivers and estuaries proposed by the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (CIFCA). The River and Estuarine Fishing Nets byelaw 2017 was agreed by the CIFCA committee on 16th September 2016 and subsequently went out to statutory consultation. Two hundred and seventy-five submissions were received by the CIFCA, the overwhelming majority of which were in favour of excluding nets from estuaries. Concerns were expressed in respect of ebb nets, the potential for long

lines to be used in estuaries, and in respect of seaward boundaries for the River Camel and Helford River being landward of existing Bass Nursery Area boundaries. At the CIFCA meeting on December 16th the Committee considered the officer’s report of the consultation results and agreed that the byelaw be passed to the Marine Management Organisation for quality assurance before being passed on to Defra, who will consider the byelaw for ministerial sign off. The Angling Trust has been calling for a total reform of inshore netting byelaws for some time and recently

Malcolm Gilbert, Conservation Officer of the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers said: “If this byelaw is eventually signed off by the Secretary of State it is a game-changer for recreational sea angling. The byelaw is not without flaws and valid questions remain unanswered in respect of ebb netting, long lining and the seaward boundaries for the Camel and Helford estuaries but the all year round prohibition of mono nets from our estuaries would be a stunning achievement for many marine fishery resources as well as for salmonids. This byelaw will not only be beneficial for the highly valuable recreational angling sector but will allow more immature fish to survive to adulthood which will be beneficial to both recreational and commercial fishing in the long term.

LDSFC FLOUNDER FISHING: POOLE HARBOUR Nine members enjoyed a very memorable trip aboard ‘Strongbow’ skippered by Dick Peckham in search of flounders within Poole Harbour. The members opted to fish the day as a mini- competition with prizes for the largest fish and most fish up for grabs. Having previously had a successful trip in the upper reaches of Poole Harbour, Dick decided to revisit the same area and was soon anchored within the main channel. To make the most of the last of the flood tide, members started by deploying a variety of techniques and rigs to try and outwit flounders; however, sport was initially slow with only a few plump flounders caught and a large canada goose which had flown into one of the member’s line but was released unharmed. As the tide neared low water, sport became frantic with nearly all members having several fish in quick succession except for the trip’s organiser Robin Lane, who was preoccupied with trying to catch a flounder on traditional baited spoon and float tactics. Eventually Robin admitted defeat and promptly switched over to ledger tactics in order to try to save a blank which he did in fine style by catching a splendid flounder of 2lb 6oz- a strong contender for the largest fish prize. Meanwhile, on the other side of the boat Club President, Derek Smith was busy accumulating a good number of flounders to win the prize for the most fish. With no more than a few inches of water left, father and son (Alec and Arran Harmer) battled it out for the largest fish of the day. Arran initially landed a fine flounder of 2lb 12oz and within minutes Alec then struck back with a fish of 2lb 13oz, however, it was Arran who then delivered the final blow by landing a cracking flounder of 3lb 0 5/8oz- which was not only the heaviest of the day but sets a catch and release record for the Club. As darkness fell other species came on the feed in earnest and all members enjoyed good sport on light gear catching and returning a number of school bass and eels. Overall, a very enjoyable day was had and a total 34 flounders were landed, with the majority being over the magical 2lb mark and nearly all were returned. A big thank you goes to Dick Peckham for providing these trips within Poole Harbour as they offer excellent sport on light gear.

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand

The dream was for me to write this amazing feature about the mass amount of Cod that we have all been catching in January, as to be fair they have normally arrived and gone by now. Apart from a few days it really hasn’t happened. To be fair I would be excited about a good run of Dog Fish at the moment. It has truly been though, a remarkable month for the big beach with Garfish still showing and even the odd Mackerel being landed. I have seen the match boys and girls still popping up baits targeting summer species, so who knows what is going on! With it Being Chesil beach, obviously while fishing poor it can pop up a few surprises for the keen anglers mad enough to be putting in the hours and I totally take my hat off to you guys. I live so close to the mighty beach and really can’t muster the energy at the moment to get down so I am especially in awe of my friend and top man Matthew Crowe from Ipswich after his recent visit. The Total Sea Fishing Magazine front cover angler drove 6 hours to have a session recently and wrote this “We headed to the Portland end of Chesil leaving Ipswich at 2 pm and after some

immense traffic we finally arrived at 8pm and started fishing the ebb. As I was after rays and conger my baits were small thumb sized bluey and squid wraps on a single 3/0 short pulley Pennel. Things were all very dog-fishy and pouty until an hour and a half before low when my rod tip started to pull and drop back, after a couple of minutes of watching it doing slight movements it gave a more positive pull followed by a proper slack-liner. Lifting into the weight it was obvious I had connected to a ray and after a short but very spirited battle she was beached. A beautiful undulate weighing 13.9lbs, after a few quick pics she was slid back into the waves and she slowly drifted away back into the depths”. As you can see from the photo across the report Matthew landed this lovely fish and believe you me this lad deserves this, the fishing up the east coast has been painfully slow. The fish may not be in numbers but a few anglers like Matthew have landed some lovely fish, so thanks to all you guys for sending in your photos to support my report, I for one am looking forward to the spring.

Tel / fax: 01643 705225 SQUIDING FOR SQUID

Many use it for bait and others for food, whatever your preference you can have great fun catching squid through the colder months. These seasonal Cephalopods are relatively easy to track down. What you need is relatively calm clear conditions and find yourself a pier or harbour on the south coast and you put yourself in with a good chance of getting amongst them. Everybody has their own methods of targeting them like any discipline of angling but a light spinning rod and reel loaded with braid will see you right. It's a bit of a minefield out there when it comes to squid jigs but I find the very reasonably priced Tronix Hardbait jigs do just the job. You can try just simply casting out and twitching it back or you can suspend the jig under a small float... Both tactics work on their day. If you haven't tried it yet then I seriously urge you to have a go as its great fun and very, very tasty!
