ANGLING TRUST MANIFESTO FOR ANGLING Introduction The Angling Trust is the representative body for all game, coarse and sea anglers in England and the national governing body for angling. The Trust is urging all the major political parties to support angling in the next Parliament and to acknowledge the economic, environmental and social benefits that the country’s most popular pursuit offers to the British people. More than 3 million anglers contribute at least £3.5 billion to the economy each year. More than 40,000 people are employed in angling and its related industries. Game and sea angling represent significant opportunities for anglers to catch their own healthy food in a sustainable manner and to connect with nature. Angling provides huge benefits for health, education and well-being to people of all ages, and it is often the only outdoor activity easily available to urban communities suffering deprivation. Anglers invest millions of hours of volunteer time into the maintenance and improvement of water environments by clearing litter, restoring habitats and monitoring pollution. Through the Angling Trust, freshwater anglers are represented on the Blueprint for Water Coalition and other valuable
partnerships with Rivers Trusts, wildlife groups and environmental organisations who share our desire to create a better environment. According to Defra's own Sea Angling 2012 report there are 884,000 sea anglers in England who directly pump £1.23 billion p.a. into the economy and upon which 10,400 full time jobs are dependent. If induced and indirect impacts are taken into account these figures soar to £2.1 billion and 23,600 jobs. The VAT alone which is collected from sea anglers dwarfs the entire value of all commercial fish landings in England. The realisation of the important benefits of angling to both society and the environment requires the Government and its agencies to assist in protecting the rights of anglers, improving the health of our fisheries and continuing support for increasing participation. Marine and freshwater environments face many severe challenges. Half of all freshwater species, including many fish, are in decline and 13% are threatened with extinction. Marine fish stocks and habitats have been destroyed on an industrial scale. Restoring our precious rivers, lakes, ponds and coastal waters to good health would have massive benefits for society, and would provide opportunities for millions of people to
experience the joy of fishing. Over the next Parliament, Britain’s three million anglers are looking for Government and parliamentary support for the following: A Brexit for fish and fishing • Improve the freshwater and marine environment for fish and anglers by retaining in full the commitment to deliver the Water Framework Directive, Habitats Directive and Marine Framework Strategy Directive and transferring over all current EU environmental protections that benefit fish stocks and the aquatic environment. • Reform the farm subsidy system to ensure that £3 billion of taxpayers’ money is focused on action to address flooding, pollution and habitat damage from the farmed environment. • The UK needs to commit to a long-term investment to restore sustainable marine fish stocks in order to maximise the long-term benefits which are in the UK’s national interest. This means ending political short-termism in fisheries management decision-making and working towards a strategic long-term vision. • Recreational sea anglers must be a fully legitimised user stakeholder group in any new UK fisheries policy. • Set clear targets and timeframes for rebuilding marine
stocks recognising that many are shared with other EU Member States. • A recognition that restoring marine stocks to their maximum potential productivity requires reducing, limiting or capping fishing mortality via a quota system or spatial and temporal closures rather than producer driven ‘effort-based’ systems, such as Days At Sea, which have been shown to be disastrous both environmentally and economically. Responsible management of water • Reform the outdated abstraction regime to allow the Environment Agency to manage water resources more sustainably. • Use farm subsidies to drive a dramatic change in the management of soil to increase aquifer recharge and reduce runoff of water which causes pollution and flooding. • Require all new housing and business developments to adopt the latest technology for efficient use of water and disposal of waste water to avoid adding to the strain on an already stressed system. • Introduce national compulsory water metering and better storage facilities to avoid damaging abstractions during drought periods.

The Angling Trust has welcomed the announcement of a new Fisheries Bill in Wednesday’s Queen’s speech. The new bill will be part of a package of ‘Brexit’ bills due to be enacted over the course of the next two years and aims to enable the UK to control access to its waters and set national fishing quotas once it has left the EU. The Angling Trust supports the government’s commitment to maintain a quota system and steer away from the effort-based systems, such as days-atsea, which were favoured by some in the commercial fishing industry. All the evidence, including pilot projects, strongly suggests these systems would lead to overfishing and a worsening of the state of fish stocks. However, any new UK quotas will still need to be set in co-operation with the EU, and within safe biological limits, to ensure that stocks are not overfished. No details have been included about the definition of UK waters and whether the bill intends to declare British sovereignty out to 200 miles or the median line where it applies. However, the Angling Trust is concerned that, as yet, there has been no reference to recreational fisheries and their value to the economy which, for some stocks, makes recreational fishing the primary economic stakeholder in the exploitation of publicly-owned fish stocks supporting more jobs and businesses in coastal communities than commercial fishing for the same stocks. Management objectives for recreational fishing
differ from those of commercial fishing which is only interested in the total number of tonnes of fish that can be harvested. Members of the public who fish recreationally require management measures that deliver abundant, localised, inshore populations of adult, mature, fish. No such measures have been adopted by the UK while a member of the EU as the Common Fisheries Policy has failed to recognise recreational fisheries as a legitimate stakeholder and while the objective of the CFP has focused exclusively on the commercial objective of Maximum Sustainable Yield. The new UK Fisheries Bill presents an opportunity to redress this.
over fishing for another." The government’s own report ‘Sea Angling 2012’ concluded that recreational sea anglers in England in 2012 spent over £1.2bn and contributed to a total overall spend of over £2bn annually employing nearly 24,000 people. These enormous economic and employment impacts are derived from a limited number of species that only generate £31 million first sale value to commercial landings. It is therefore essential that future management objectives and measures for jointly targeted species under a new UK Fisheries Bill must fully reflect the needs of the public fishing recreationally.
Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd is writing to seek an urgent meeting with the new Secretary of State for the Environment, Michael Gove, and the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, as soon as possible to ensure that recreational anglers are recognised as equal direct user-stakeholders in the management of our publicly-owned fish stocks.
David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “The new bill will repatriate powers to manage sea fish stocks in UK waters as we see fit. This also gives the UK the opportunity to be ‘best in class’ in sea fisheries management. If the government is serious about making a success of Brexit it must ensure that access to fish stocks for members of the public fishing recreationally is given a higher priority with measures in any new bill designed to protect and enhance the many benefits it delivers to communities throughout the country."
Mark Lloyd said: "The Angling Trust wants to ensure that the announcement of a new UK Fisheries Bill delivers opportunities for the UK to become a world leader in sea fisheries management by recognising and harnessing the potential social and economic contribution to a post-Brexit UK of a vibrant recreational fishing sector and the principle of public access to publicly-owned sea fisheries resources. However, there is a danger that ministers simply cave in to commercial pressure and swap one regime of
The Angling Trust will be publishing its post-Brexit vision for marine fisheries next month and will be campaigning to ensure that access for members of the public fishing recreationally for publicly-owned sea fish stocks is given full consideration as the details of the new Fisheries Bill are developed.

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS
THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
Some great summer fishing with some great summer weather sums up the month so far just dragging my exhausted body home with the heat after a long busy days at sea catching rays lots of tub gurnards a beautiful fish almost tropical in colour to them. Plenty of hounds but not many over ten pounds July August is generally the best month for the monsters that the Thames estuary is famous for, still plenty of rays coming to the net but most are being released. Bass fishing has tailed off a bit still catching them but not in the quantity’s we were. Some big shoals of school bass mixed up with a few mackerel making their way through the Thames estuary quite exciting stuff with the gulls diving all around you but the bass are all very small school fish, and in any case they have to go back until July when
you can keep just one fish per angler what a joke, go to any local restaurants and they all have fresh local bass in stock !!!!!!!!!!!!! Tope fishing is no longer as popular as it was probably due to the cost but when your steaming out double the distance and generally four hours more at sea you have to charge almost double the price it’s not rocket science expensive I know but it does give you the chance of a fish of a live time you pays your money and takes your choice, but we and other skippers certainly can’t do it for the same price as a general trip unless there mad. So that’s it for another month god knows were the time goes best get started on next months report then !!!!!!!!!

SAMALITE LEAGUE JUNE 24TH, COGDEN, 4PM - 9PM Conditions were choppy with the moderate onshore wind, the water had turned from clear to milky and there was weed to contend with for this match. As mentioned in a pre match report choppy conditions can bring the smoothounds in and it did with an exceptional 13lber for Jason Brown. We try and have a couple of daylight matches each year and with a good tide this was one of them. We cant pick the conditions which were perfect up until 2 days before ! Without a doubt there would of been a lot more plaice, gurnards and possibly mullet if it had stayed calm and clear. However this match produced one of the top weights so far this year and 60% of the entry weighed in so it could of been a lot worse.

The canalised section of the upper Dee estuary was on good form on a bright and breezy evening with decent numbers of eels and flounders to worm and crab baits and a sprinkling of school bass. Eels have a set length in this series and those who managed to find them did well, none more so than Stuart Dewhurst with a winning catch and release total of over six metres. Local angler, Wayne McGilloway, maintained his comeback form with second place.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS
Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 5
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
Well having just experienced the Spanish heatwave there does still seem to be a distinct lack of what I call the ‘bread and butter’ summer species around, those being mullet, wrasse, mackerel, garfish etc. The lack of mackerel from both boat and shore is a little concerning as there should be plenty around by now and I only hope that they put in an appearance soon as my bait freezer is getting very low. Also seems to be another season gone by where we haven’t seen any of the big gars at Berry Head/Hopes Nose etc. Not sure if this is a result of a change in migratory patterns or not but this is yet another year where they haven’t shown. Most of the specimen fish captures this month have been rays, smoothies or huss and its’ no secret that most of these captures have come from the Bristol Channel shoreline, either around the Minehead area for the rays or the low water reefs such as Kilve and Lilstock for the hounds. One of the best hounds I’ve heard of by a Plymouth angler so far this season was a cracking hound of 16-15 by Scott Clark of Rodbenders SAC. In a bid to avoid the weekend crowds Martin Larkins and Matt Parry had a mid-week trip up to the reefs and were each rewarded with PB’s (PB alert) with Lark’s best fish going 14-1 and Matts going 15-3. They also had several other double figure hounds – nice fishing chaps. Although it’s now likely to start slowing down slightly, some good huss have been caught from the various rock marks around the South Devon coast including Coombe, Scabbacombe and Start Point. Anthony Edney of Castaways SAC set a new club record with a cracking huss of 14lb whilst fellow club member Gav Cuthbertson set a new catch and release record with a fish of 12-10.
So far this season it would appear that most of the mullet showing at the more well-known mullet spots are smaller fish although there is always the odd exception to the rule. Rob Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC landed a good one of 5-7 from a local mark which is one of the biggest I have heard of so far this year. Even a local match on Plymouth Breakwater (which is usually a haven for big mullet) produced just a handful of mullet to 3-8. Hopefully things will improve over the coming month. Gilthead bream sport at the Kingsbridge Estuary seems to have slowed down during the past few weeks although this is generally the time of year when the bigger specimens start to show. The area around Halwell and Tosnos on the opposite side would give you a good chance latching into a big gilt. Martin Larkins made the long trip down to West Cornwall and was rewarded with a 4-10 gilt which has taken the lead in the 2 month Gilt Competition being held by South West Sea Baits. Malc Jones on Sea Angler 2 tells me that the wrecks continue to fish well for Pollack, Cod and Ling well into double figures whilst Kev McKie on Size Matters has just returned from his first Guernsey trip where the fishing on the banks over there was very poor. However the lads on board managed some good sport on the wrecks on the return with Ling to 26lb, Pollack to 12lb and conger to 66lb. It is worth noting that the Blue Shark fishing off Plymouth has been excellent during the past few years and both Kev and Malc are taking bookings for shark trips this season.

YEP, SIZE CERTAINLY DOES MATTER! By Scott Smy
I’m sure if you were to ask boat anglers to name the top 10 charter boats in operation in the UK during the past 15+ years then the Plymouth-based boat ‘Size Matters’ would certainly feature highly in any such list such is the long list of big fish that have come over the gunwhales. Following his retirement from the UK charter boat scene in 2015, Graham Hannaford sold Size Matters to Kevin McKie and he is now the proud owner of the big Canadian-built Guimond 45. Kevin is a madkeen angling Liverpudlian who has wealth of angling experience obtained from fishing all over the World. Having spoken to Kevin several times through emails as a result of receiving reports for my monthly SAN Report, I was keen to catch-up with Kevin and the chance arose recently when I and several others were invited out on an offshore trip. Due to the distance you need to travel offshore, deep water wrecking trips often involve a very early start so 5am on Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May saw a motley group of us waiting on Mountbatten pontoon to be collected before setting off on a 3 hour steam to a distant group of wrecks that Kev hoped would hold large Pollack, Conger and Ling, with the chance of a Cod as well. We were to be joined on this trip by well-known angling journalist Dave Lewis who was looking to put a feature together for Sea Angler Magazine (look out for this in a future edition of Sea Angler). You don’t really get a scale of the size of the deck area on Size Matters until you get on-board and quite simply the amount of fishing area is vast and better still allows everyone to fish along one side and across the stern when fishing on the drift meaning there is no one having to fish under the boat (which can be a nightmare). The scale of Size Matters also means that it can certainly handle the weather and is more likely to get offshore when other boats have to cancel due to poor weather conditions. If you only have a limited number of trips booked each year then this is an important consideration. Weather conditions on the steam out were perfect in terms of having a flat calm sea but the lack of visibility caused by the thick fog meant that Kev wouldn’t be able to get the anchor down for the eels as the wrecks we were fishing were close to the main shipping lanes. After several cups of coffee which was very welcome after the early start (thanks to the top crewman Mike Smale) a reduction in engine revs heralded our arrival at the chosen wreck and within minutes a whole host

of different lures attached to flying collar rigs, went over the side. This was assisted by having the guys from Savage Gear on board who bought a whole host of new lures from their range to try. The first few drifts of the wreck produced plenty of good-sized Pollack, with the best a fish of 14lb caught by Sam Milden followed by a 13lb fish by Tim Maslen which was a PB for him on his first ever wreck trip (top work mate). The Savage Gear Sandeel lures proved to be particularly deadly and accounted for a nice Cod of just under double figures for one angler. As the tide slowed down Kev suggested a change in tactics and drifting the wreck with bait to entice the Ling on the feed. Within the seconds of the bait hitting the bottom I felt the tell-tale signs of a Ling taking the mackerel fillet bait and wound up a nice 12lb fish and could see that everyone else was also into fish. There were certainly plenty of Ling on this wreck. The next drift I managed a good-sized Whiting which managed to get an 8/0 down its’ chops whilst the rest of the lads hit into more good Ling, with local Andrew Copley (the owner of Seaview Tackle and Bait) bringing up a cracker of 23lb only to be trumped by his brother Malcolm who landed a Ling of 23-8. Top fishing lads. With a long steam back to Port ahead of us, Kev suggested that we tried a couple of wrecks on the way back in for Cod although from reports received it was a case that Cod numbers were still a bit thin on the ground. Despite this we tried a few more wrecks on the way in but we just found more Pollack and Whiting. I considered myself for the award of numpty of the day losing a nice fish on the last drift of the day which took the lure a long way above the wreck and can only assume would have been a nice Coalie which snapped my braid just 20ft below the surface. To say I was gutted was an under-statement! Boll**ks!

All too soon we were heading for home with a good box of Pollack, Ling, Whiting and a single Cod. I was surprised to see the skipper don the oilskins and get out on deck himself and fillet all the catch (don’t know what that says about your filleting skills Mike!). Having all your fish filleted down was certainly appreciated by all of us. I’ve always known that Size Matters was a great charter boat to fish from and combined with Kev McKie now at the helm I can only see this partnership going from strength to strength. Cheers for a top day out mate – gonna have to do it again soon!

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
The wreck fishing has been sporadic with some days seeing heaps of fish hit the deck only for the same marks to produce next to nothing the following day. Pollock are still a good size with fish over 15lb taking the lures over various wrecks. The cod have been thin on the ground but have increased in size, 6 or 7 fish being our best trip but 18lbers not uncommon. Pretty much every angler I know has been out to enjoy some of the awesome bream fishing we are getting off Poole this season, I expect you are fed up of hearing about it. The black bream continue to provide quality sport

fishing with fish to 4b coming on most trips. As the waters have heated up the rays have started to move, undulates, small eyed and blondes are in abundance. I had a great time at the Poole species hunt this year, organised by Sarah and Louis Medley. The 2 teams on my boat managed 17 species between them, evenly spread between the larger species and a few of the mini goby and wrasse variety. Brilliant day out, bear it in mind for next year if you have got a few mates who want to give it a try. Looking forward to being able to land a few bass in two weeks time.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Congrats to Lou and Sarah Medley for organising the Poole species Comp, the comp was fished in near perfect conditions, the winning team Culkheads had 36 points ahead of runners up Christchurch Angling Centre on 33 points, there was only 5 points separating the next 10 teams. Top species went to Luke Allen with an Undulate Ray of 16lb 3 ozs. The date for the next Poole species comp is June 8th 2018 for more info please email Sarah at ‘pinkdolphin75@hotmail. co.uk’. Poole Bay continues to fish well for Bream, Plaice and mini species during a Lymington SAC club match they landed a new club record Cornish Sucker of the Clingfish family, I had never even heard
of it yet alone seen one but thanks to the Collins book of UK Fish it was a near perfect match to their picture. On the banks some good Rays are providing sport with a few small Tope, the Swanage grounds have been consistent in catches and have produced a few Mackeral as a bonus. Further around the headland off St Albans there has been some good Bull Huss fishing mixed in with tope to 25lb and some quality Bream up to 4lb 8ozs. Poole Sea Angling Centre are running 2 x Winter Cod comps on 19th November 2017 and 17th December 2017 for more details please contact Andy on 01202676597

Cameron Atkinson smoothound - 12lb 11oz
a fine tope caught on Reel Deal off Ilfracombe. Dann Welch with fine tope caught from his own boat
NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas
The hot calm conditions have proved ideal for boat anglers with tope now showing in good numbers off Ilfracombe. With several good fish boated on Real Deal skippered by Dan Hawkins and Bluefin skippered by John Barbeary. Mackerel are showing which always sees an influx of predatory species in close pursuit including bass and tope. Thin-lipped grey mullet are providing exciting sport in both the Taw and Torridge estuaries where they are tempted with small spinners tipped with harbour ragworm. As in many methods used in angling I often wonder how the method was discovered. When I used to spin for salmon on the Lower Taw it was not unusual to get thin-lipped grey mullet following the spinner to the bank veering away at the last moment. Perhaps anglers witnessed this behaviour and added ragworm to the hooks in an attempt to provoke an attack from the mullet? John Shapland was among successful mulleteers landing a brace of the hard fighting fish weighing 3lb 13.5oz and 2lb 14oz. On the open coast smoothound have been showing in good numbers from all the recognised marks with several double figure fish landed. Cameron Atkinson won Appledore Shipbuilders monthly Rover with a specimen smoothound of 12lb 111/4oz. In runner up spot was David Langbridge with a fine gilthead bream of 4lb 2oz and in third was James Mayhew with a
smoothound of 9lb 71/2oz. Combe Martin SAC member Guy Spriggs landed a fine smoothound of 11lb 4oz on his latest visit to the coast. A fine Smoothound of 13lbs 1/2 oz was caught from a boat by Jack Pike. Other anglers have also had multiple hauls of smoothound from marks in Bideford Bay Cameron Atkinson landed a fine 4lb 5oz gilthead bream when he fished from a boat in the Taw and Torridge estuary. This is the biggest of the season reported so far though I feel sure other specimens have been landed but not reported. Several bass have also been caught from the estuary on lure fishing tactics. Ross Stanway and Lee Holden enjoyed sport at Ilfracombe Pier landing a brace of spotted ray each along with plenty of the inevitable dogfish. The pier has been providing excellent results for LRF specialists with a wide range of species landed. Float fishing should produce garfish, mackerel and Pollock.
Ollie Passmore with a fine smoothound of 12lb 6oz Dan West with a boat caught smoothound
John Shapland - thin lipped mullet -3lb 13.5oz Dan Spearman smoothound -12lb 14oz
As the summer progresses bass sport should pick up with more anglers targeting the species mow that they are allowed to keep one for the table. The annual spider crab moult will ensure the smoothound and bass move close inshore where larges succulent peeling spider crab will prove irresistible to marauding fish. Grey mullet should be present all along the coast and will provide exciting sport for dedicated specialists.

NEWS
ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding
Boat It’s been tough but think we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now. Turbot and Brill being a bit steadier now if not fantastic but you can’t keep having fantastic years and expect everything to be ‘on it!’ Alderney has got to have an off year at some point and looks like this is it, I remember one about 8 or 9 years ago and the doom and gloom merchants that know so much said Alderney was finished, then it bounced back with boats getting anything between 30 -90 Turbot a day. Let’s hope we get that back. However, for the lack of fish coming out there are some cracking Brill being reported with Offshore Rebel, True Blue and Fish-On getting them to 9lb plus. Turbot average size seems to have improved, several double figure fish being reported but nothing near the 20lb mark – yet to see one this season – it’ll come, always does. The side attractions to the flatfish is some really good Tope fishing, we seemed to miss out on these sporting fish last year but with more Mackerel showing we have more Tope. Fish to 50lb showing on the usual marks. Also, some good Bull Huss fishing too with double figure fish regularly reported and on the offshore reefs towards Sark some excellent Black Bream fishing. Shore Up and down, hit and miss. One week we’re hammering the Pollack, then struggling again. Plenty of Mackerel around high water around the end of the wall and there seems to be plenty of small Bass about for the lure anglers. Small Black Bream as well as Couches showing as well. Garfish – what do they look like? Almost a winter fish here now – weird!! Plenty of Thick Lipped Mullet reported and seen around the harbour walls. Not spooked neither. Since the tackle
shop has closed definitely less angling is taking place so if report seems sparse this is the main reason. Probably fish about but no reports coming to me. Florida Keys I was fortunate enough to have a recent trip to Marathon in the Keys. I go most years and I am lucky enough I have a friend there whose house we use as a base. Early June I went with good mate Matt Smith. We mainly target the lure angling from the shore lines, avoiding the busy bridges, we use heavy Bass gear and target 4.00am starts to get the best of it for a few hours. The Snook fishing was tremendous with quite a few double figure fish, Jack Crevalles to 7lb, snappers to 8lb 10oz, Barracuda’s to 12lb and tarpon to over a ton!! Yes 100lb+. It was awesome. We also did the sharking from the shore, something new to learn but we succeeded, not big though – best fish was 110lb, we will get bigger in future trips. If you want to read more jump on our Alderney Angling Facebook page and scroll back – it fun that was for sure! Next year we have booked the house out for guide shore trips. The house is canal side and has a pool, sleeps 4 guests and the cost starts at £155 per night. That’s for the 4 and includes 15 hours guiding for your stay. Of course plus flights which you can get for less than £400 with Norwegian plus hire car. There is various ways you can bolt things on to our prices so if you are interested email me on mark@ alderneyangling.com. Initially it is for March and April next year and see how it goes. In the meantime, many thanks to all of you that visit Alderney and spend your hard earned money in the restaurants and pubs around the island, if you had a bad trip – well that’s fishing and bet you have had plenty of good ones. Sure it will be better next year.

WALES / BURNHAM ON SEA
Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby
The last month started off well weather wise but went downhill a bit keeping boats on their trailers for the last couple of weeks. Hounds are everywhere it seems with some real lumps amongst them and there are still bass on the banks if you target them. Hopefully there will still be a few about come 1st July when we can take 1 home for the pot. Sunday 21st May was our Presidents cup fished in a brisk southerly wind which gave us comfortable conditions close to shore. Most boats stayed local and fishing was reasonable with a fair few hounds around with some great specimens amongst them . The top 3 places were all taken with hounds on a weight to measure formula. 1St was Pete Nicholson with a hound of 23lb 4oz and 150%, 2nd was Martin Quinn with a hound of 22lb 10oz and 146% and 3rd Chris Linsey with another hound of 18lb 7oz and 119%. Pools was shared by Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden with 5 species each. Pete also had a cracking bass of 7lb. May 24th Jeff Clarke, Martin Quinn and Andy Georgiou sneaked a mid week trip out of West Bay and found plenty of pollack and a bonus cod of 15lb for Martin. Four days later 3 boats towed down and found the fishing tough on the wrecks with just pout and a couple of bass between them but a couple of hours inshore at the end found a few plaice and a small thornie.
Although not sea fishing our president John May had a cracking salmon of 19lb on the fly from the Wye and then followed that up a few days later with a lovely sole of 3lb 2oz from Portishead. Wednesday 14th June myself and Stephen Saxby joined a couple of friends for our first shark trip of the year on White Water from Pembrokshire. Skipper Andy warned us that fishing was a bit tough but he found us a few with 2 in the boat and 1 dropped along with another couple of fish playing with the baits. The largest went to Stephen with a nice blue of 85lbs. Whilst waiting for a run we bottom fished and caught plenty of haddock, whiting and gurnards with a pb haddock for me at 3lb 5oz. Fish of the month sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge for May was won by Pete Nicholson with a hound of 23lb 4oz and 150%. July will see us have a re-run of our Fred Peters trophy on the 9th and the Wilf Dunstone trophy on the 23rd . We have a club meeting on Thursday 20th of July at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association and our website www. burnhamboats.co.uk

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts
With charter boats now in full swing the star of the Minehead show has to be the smoothounds. Everywhere you go, there are hounds waiting to put on a performance. Many charter parties have ben treated to over 100 fish per day with lots of hounds well into double figures and one or two over the magical twenty pound mark. I still maintain that the good old hardback harbour crab is the best bait for these terrific fighters. Not only are they free but they also seem to deter the dreaded dogfish to a large extent but not entirely so beware! To the west of Porlock bay, the water seems to be clearing nicely. Here there are a few nice black bream starting to show, also a few triggers have been reported from several inshore reef marks.
Also in the inshore clean waters there are pollack and wrasse to be had. Pollack to around the ten pound mark can provide brilliant sport on light tackle from these shallow waters. On the offshore scene, tope are the main quarry with plenty of bull huss thrown in for good measure. He grounds off Ilfracombe are still providing good sport with spurdogs. These fish have been on the grounds for some months now so how long they will stay is anyones guess. As usual, if you have a last minute south coast cancellation because of strong southerly winds, give us a ring, we can usually get out! Dave R

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Yet again, the past month here on the good old Bristol Channel shore has seen some fantastic catches recorded. The Smoothound fishing has been impressive , albeit in localised pockets . But locate them , and boy are you going to have a bit of fun if you can keep up with it. Hooking one every cast when they are in numbers competing for food and you will be up to your eye balls in it . Thank god it's only for a few months of the year other wise we would just take it for granted. In my neck of the woods down here the Minehead area the small eyed ray fish had been some of the best in several years with a cracking average size of 6-10lb being almost seen on a daily basis by local and visiting anglers. This is great to see after their numbers and size were in a horrible state a few years ago. Those targeting the bass are finding one of two and the odd one are popping up in catches throughout. The Dover sole are now A target species in the upper reaches around Clevedon , Portishead and Burnham. The good old Thornback Ray are to be had from Clevedon down to Watchet from many high and low water marks. Those wishing to knock up the species count can fill up the score card this coming month as the summer species really thicken up. The Porlock and Bossington
area down to Ilfracombe hold countless opportunities for the weird and wonderful. For next months report we can expect to hear of some fine specimen hounds pushing the 20lb barrier and beyond . A few nudging the 20lb have already been landed , with the captures being kept under wraps , which is a wise move to safeguard those marks with limited access and space. Anyway I'm going to leave it there this month. Get out there and enjoy some potential superb sport that's on offer. Tight lines and happy hunting

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs Generally fishing has been quite productive. Bream fishing at Christchurch Ledge, has been difficult at times, but in general its producing some quality fish.On the difficult days, you just need to move about a bit, until you find them. Ground baiting makes all the difference. The deeper side of the ledge we have caught plenty of Pollack, a few double figure Bullhuss and Smoothounds. Offshore Wrecking, one day it's very good the next it's difficult. On the good
days we have caught some decent size Cod,Ling and Pollack, not to mention our forth John Dory of the season, weighing 7lb 14oz. Our last Alderney trip,we were welcomed with good weather. The fishing as always, was very enjoyable. We never had huge amounts of fish, but did see some quality Brill to 7lb 10oz. The biggest Turbot just shy of 8lb.

pounds, this is some fight from over 200 ft of water. Wrecking has suffered the same problem with just a few fish off each wreck which means you have to do lots of miles to make it work. What I think we need is a good SW gale to freshen it all up and at the moment that's just what we are getting so watch this space, hope fully it will all change for the better.

This month has been a little disappointing with some inshore marks fishing well and others rather poor. Starting off with the Bream fishing which in places has been good, however you have to go looking and we have found the biggest concentration of fish in some unexpected places. Skate are on the inshore banks but no where near the numbers we were experiencing this time last year. Mackerel have made a show but again not in great numbers. The most productive mark is the Tope which are here in good numbers, last trip we had in excess of thirty fish with (mostly females), best weighing in at over fifty

NEWS / WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, July 2017
Port Report Anglers will remember the first 10 days of June being awful with cold, strong winds resulting in cancellations right along the south coast. This was not the start to so called ‘Flaming June’ that was wanted. The fishing was also very hard. The wrecks were totally unpredictable with one good day followed by several bad when the only fish that seemed left in the English Channel were pout. Weymouth charter boats were searching well to the west of their usual areas of operation along with lengthy and fruitless forays to the east. The more distant wrecks fished during the Channel Island trips were also just as unproductive and similar reports and extremely hard fishing were coming in from ports all along the southern coast. There has been a growing sense of despondency amongst the local skippers with regard to the more distant trips especially in the knowledge that the best fishing was close to port. And here lies the problem. The fishing close to home has been good with plenty of rays, tope, smoothound and spurdog plus a few conger. There were good amounts of mackerel on Portland Bill so fresh bait was no problem. The problem lies in trying to convince anglers to try this sort of fishing, usually done at anchor and requiring up to 2lb of lead, when what is wanted is cod with pollack being reluctantly accepted. ‘Sport Fishing’ is not appealing to many anglers especially when confronted with the amount of lead often required to hold bottom. Light tackle fishing taking place on the drift is the favoured method; the days of anchoring and seeing what comes along is not popular. Saying that there are followers of such fishing and there are a couple of Weymouth boats who have built their businesses around anchoring and are enjoying lively and unproductive fishing. As well as the ‘big fish’ there have been good catches of bream from the inshore reefs and anchoring sessions on The Shambles has produced turbot and brill along with a variety of rays. We used to have live sandeels on offer for our customers in Weymouth. When the Olympics came to Weymouth, plans were announced for impressive marina extensions and an Olympic Village development around the Pleasure pier area. This meant that we skippers who had established holding tanks for deliveries of sandeels that we had transported up from Devon or which were purchased locally lost our rented facility in anticipation of these lofty promises. Needless to say none of these ambitious projects took place and the Pleasure Pier area of Weymouth has become more run down than ever. And we can no longer offer live sandeels. When the wreck fishing is hard, sandeels are worth their weight in gold. Today I fished next to a Weymouth boat that had managed to obtain sandeels. We struggled to catch four fish on lures but the anglers on this boat were catching four good sized pollack per drift. I had to leave…it was soul destroying. And that is the power of sandeels…to make what would be a useless day become a brilliant one. Oh to be allowed to have our rented facility restored and our live bait tanks reinstated! The Channel Island trips have also been extremely hard with the flatfish fishing on our own Shambles Bank far better for turbot and brill. So, what will July offer. At the moment it seems unlikely we will have a cod ‘season’ like the ones we have recently enjoyed. Anglers will recall the superb
wreck fishing in 2015 and then last year’s action with much less but far bigger cod. It would be wonderful to think the cod season is just late this year and all will be well as June progresses into July. It is possible that could happen…..I hope my next report shows that it did. Because of the lack of cod there are many more pollack on the wrecks with plenty of double figure specimens about. The Sidewinder Skerries lures have been impressively effective along with the Sidewinder 5.5” ‘Joeys’ for pollack. Very long traces as in 24 feet long have made all the difference to the catch rate but this is very difficult to do with 10 anglers on a charter boat.
A cracking selection of flatties from Duchess II
Some nice bream being caught on Duchess II up tp 5lbs
Brill & Turbot Duchess II
The arrival of mackerel will continue to help the ‘big fish’ action. We skippers do try to encourage our customers to try fishing for the rays, huss, tope and conger….but, as said above, it ain’t easy. Those that do fish this way will undoubtedly be rewarded. We have lost our wonderful plaice fishing. This loss has badly hurt those skippers that rely on the inshore fishing for plaice in the early part of the year just as the bass restrictions have impacted badly on the charter fleet for the specialist bass trips later in the year. I fear we are currently in a very difficult place with our sport and we must hope, as has been the case so often, that this is all part of Nature’s mysterious cycle and that the plaice will come back and the gross unfairness of the bass limits will be adjusted in recognition of the anglers’ importance to the economy. Unfortunately we have heard all the arguments about the insanity of penalising the sector that generates the most income from the bass many times and we are aware that our voices are not heeded. A few plaice are being caught but they are hard to find and certainly not very big. July onwards should improve the chances of plaice from the areas they are currently being caught but the once productive mussel beds areas are still not recovering and without them the plaice will remain scattered. From July 1st anglers are allowed a whole bass each to keep. We have all heard stories of there being plenty of bass around but it makes no sense to fish for them on a catch and release basis. I am sure there are anglers who would enjoy fishing in this way but I haven’t come across any on my boat. The Charter fleet have kept well away from any bass marks so as to avoid any difficulties that might arise from any reluctance to return them but at least we will now be able to fish for bass as a small part of a varied day. They will certainly be a welcome species to try for again on the Channel trips although last year it was difficult to find even the one fish per angler allowance. So, this is a very challenging season so far for all of us. We skippers are very aware how much time and effort our customers put into their sport, often getting out of bed at stupid hours in order to make a lengthy drive to Weymouth. We really do want to find the fish for you and I can assure readers that our fuel bills reflect just how much extra effort and mileage is being put in trying to find a few fish. We have to see this lean period through and remain optimistic as only anglers can. Don’t give up…it has to get better!! Thank you to all those anglers we have taken out and who persevere throughout the day in trying to catch a fish; we appreciate your efforts and thank you for coming to Weymouth.
