DROWNING STATISTICS GIVE CAUSE FOR OPTIMISM AND SHOW PREVENTION IS WORKING The latest UK drowning statistics show that prevention efforts appear to be working, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The figures from the National Water Safety Forum, of which RoSPA is a member, show that 255 people drowned accidentally or through natural causes in water in 2017 – a drop of 15 per cent from the 2016 figure of 300. The data from the forum’s Water Incident Database (WAID) also show that a large number of drownings happened at coastal and sea locations (103); the total number of deaths in inland waters (such as rivers, lakes, quarries, lochs and canals) is 132. As in previous years, many people drowned having never intended to be in the water – 106 people who had been walking or running near water were among the fatalities. While WAID shows there were 123 incidents in which the cause was not recorded or confirmed, RoSPA believes the numbers are promising, with the
HONITON SAC
early work being undertaken as part of the UK’s Drowning Prevention Strategy seemingly taking effect. Errol Taylor, RoSPA chief executive, said: “We are cautiously optimistic about the figures for 2017 and the general downward trend in drowning over the past few years. “What this information doesn’t show is the considerable partnership working within the National Water Safety Forum and in communities up and down the country; from helping children to learn to swim, to building water safety communities, and raising awareness of key risks without stopping people enjoying the water. “We are still in the early phases of the UK’s Drowning Prevention Strategy, which was launched by the forum two years ago, however these figures give us encouragement, and we hope that we can continue to address the burden of drowning.”
Five juniors took part in the first of the seasons junior events. Fishing at lyme regis they managed to catch some small wrasse and blennies. Top rod was jack squance with 100 points. Close behind was Archie Sweetland with 98 point. A big thank you to Chris at Seaton tackle shop for putting up two cracking prizes for them.

THAMES ESTUARY
THAMES ESTUAURY
BRIGHTLINGSEA, Essex
Thames Estuary
by Lee Bolingbroke
Plenty to be thankful for this month with some beautiful calm and hot days with plenty of good fishing, once again the rays have featured high on our catches list with up to fifty fish a trip and I get the feeling some anglers are getting bored with them this is a very successful fish on the east coast and you wonder how much food they are munching up every day. Anglers are still happy to travel from fare distances to board charter boats to fish for this species though and they do make delicious eating. Subtle changes are under way with the longer days and warming seas with lots of smooth hounds making a show mostly small to mediums but a few up to sixteen pounds. Stingrays are now being caught close in off St.Osyth generally a fish that likes worm baits and we never catch them by targeting them and normally are a surprise fish although shore anglers are targeting them
Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 3
mostly night fishing with varying results. Still several whiting to be had and lots of lesser spotted dog fish which can be a bit of a pest on some marks, there are also some cracking dabs in the shallow gut ways and dare I say it bass, birds are working on the shoals in the Colne and several boats are targeting them naughty I know but then with such a unfair share of the bass stock to anglers a big zero who let’s face it have had little to do with the problems the stock is in can you blame them, I am not in any way condoning it but come on being in the trade I know some commercial boats are still drifting for them. Some of our charter boats have been running well offshore after the spur dogs with anglers willing to pay a bit extra and having some very good catches but it’s getting risky now as they will be migrating away from the Thames estuary at any time now and you could make a long steam out to the marks with nill fish to show for it. So in summing up fishing is good and changing all the time now with the summer species arriving in dribs and drabs.

PLYMOUTH
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
As I write this month’s report the sun is streaming in through the window, there isn’t a cloud in the sky and I’m hearing of the first shore-caught mackerel from the Torbay area today. It’s certainly been a while coming but hopefully the arrival of the bait fish will result in an up-turn in the fishing, particularly from the shore as it’s been a bit of a struggle of late. With the plaice fishing at Beesands having gone very quiet (probably due to this beach and Slapton being hammered by inshore trawlers over the past few weeks), Nick Green of Castaways SAC decided to try the rock ledges at East Portlemouth instead and was rewarded with a stunning plaice of 3-5 which was a new catch and release club record. Nice going Nick. Over the past few years Rob Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC has been finding some cracking shore-caught pollack down in the depths of Cornwall. Having heard of a few fish being caught by Cornish club anglers and with a settled spell of weather (essential for most Cornish rock marks), Rob recently made the long journey down and was rewarded with a nice pollack of 5-8. As sea temperatures rise we will hopefully start to see some better shore pollack around the South Devon coastline.
Several members of Pot Black SAC made the trip up to North Devon for hounds and were rewarded with a cracking session. Over 20 hounds were caught up to just under double figures. Top bait as always with the hounds from the shore was peeler crab. There seems to be plenty of crab around at the moment so it’s worth getting a few in for freezing down whilst there are plenty around. On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 has been finding plenty of good double-figure pollack on both the wrecks and on the reef, with live launce proving deadly on the reefs. The pollack sport on the reefs is second to none this time of year. Also a few cod are starting to show along with ling, the biggest landed on Sea Angler 2 being 30lb.
2018
SIZE MATTERS
Size Matters has now returned from its’ winter session up north and has been straight into the fish. Offshore wrecks have been producing ling to 23lb, cod to 13lb and pollack to 16lb whilst a trip over to Alderney fishing the banks for flatties produced turbot to 16lb. That’s it from me for this month – the fishing is definitely getting better so get out there. Happy dipping!
PLYMOUTH Purpose built Guimond 45 Sports Angler.
Whilst the gilthead bream fishing has been a bit on the quiet side I am hearing of a few now showing from the Kingsbridge Estuary. The bream fishing will just keep getting better now so it’s well worth a crack around the Tosnos area in Kingsbridge or along Milbrook Creek in the Tamar. Best all-round bait will be crab followed by lug. Try and fish the mid-tides as the large tides can cause a problem with weed.

CHESIL BEACH
Sea Angling News, June 2018
CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers
The general fishing along Chesil beach is still proving to be quite difficult at the moment with the summer species yet to make a real appearance. Saying this, the number of hounds are on the increase and I’m sure it wont be long before we see more bream turn up aswell as gurnards and other various species including the mackerel. There are still a good number of ray to be had along the beach with some cracking fish being caught by some anglers. Ben Carter headed over to the shingle with some friends in search of a few ray and they were rewarded with some great fishing! They managed a good number of small eyed ray biggest going 10lb 8oz with several others weighing over 9lb. Ben also managed some thornbacks with one tipping the scales to double figures weighing 11lb 2oz! Staying on the subject of thornbacks they seem to be making a good account for themselves at the moment with Ben Stockley also finding a few fish on a short session and setting a new PB of 15lb 12oz a cracking fish! He also had spotted and small eyed ray.
Bradley Thomas Jones with a Chesil bass.
The plaice fishing has been very hit or miss at the moment with only a few anglers finding the better fish and now with the spider crabs starting to show in force this will only make things more difficult to target them. I mentioned in a previous report about trying to overcome this by changing rigs so that your snood can always be adjusted if you ever lost a hook. There are others ways to combat this problem one of them is to use various types of pop-ups to lift the bait slightly from the sea bed. I’ve also heard of some anglers using a braided hook length as this proves very difficult for the crab to cut through. They will eventually get through if they are that persistent but can sometimes hold them off long enough to produce a bite or two!
Nice brace of ray! Well done gents
June can be a very productive month along Chesil beach and as soon as the bait fish turn up in numbers things can really get going! Many thanks to everyone who sent photos and reports and Until next time, good luck & tight lines!

Available for wreck, reef, banks, evening trips, 4-day Alderney and 3-day Cherbourg trips. **Bass, turbot, cod, plaice, shark specials** Both boats available for charters and individuals.
POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins
As predicted once the warmer weather graced our shores the fish would start to feed, although the 1st few days the fish were very difficult to get into feeding mode but plenty of ground bait and patience proved the to be the answer, over the last couple of weeks certain areas have fished extremely well one day them quiet the next. The 2 local Bream comps were both won by Jan Trysca and the Cobbs Quay based Barracuda species comp was won by a 2 man team consisting of Fred Smith and Pete Smith (not related) landing 20 species this
is all the more of an achievement because all the other teams had 4 members. Plaice fishing along the beaches has slowed a little but the Swash area has thrown up some good sized fish. Mackeral are starting to appear in small but encouraging numbers along with plenty of Garfish. Offshore Spurdogs and Rays dominate the catches which will soon give way to Tope as the summer arrives, further out on the wrecks a few Pollack are being landed and the attention will turn to Cod which we all pray will be better than last year.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
I hope everyone is making the most of all this decent weather we have been getting lately, after a winter as hard as that it’s like living in the tropics at the moment. Bream fishing has continued as it started off in last month’s report. We are finding good numbers, several days managing over 100 fish. Although the size hasn’t quite been as good as the last few years I’m sure the bigger ones will arrive shortly, on light spinning gear they are all good fun to catch regardless. With increased demand on inshore trips we have only done a few trips out into the channel on the wrecks, still a bit on the quiet side but now producing more cod than Pollock so it’s heading in the right direction. We managed our first trip over to Alderney of the season but unfortunately
it was the week before bank holiday and the weather was testing at best. Well done and many thanks to the guys who came with us and managed a safe and fun trip in far from perfect conditions. Fishing on the banks was good with brill and turbot both in good numbers and plenty of bait to be had on the feathers. One of the highlights of the month has been some quality plaice fishing which we have fitted in on our bream days. Fish up to 4lb have been hitting the net which is always welcome. Hoping for more good weather over the coming months as our offshore stuff picks up more. Thanks to everyone for fishing with us on Silver Spray and out of Poole over the last month.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT
Sea Angling News, June 2018
NORTH DEVON REPORT
By Wayne Thomas
It seems that summer fishing is on its way with smoothound moving into their summer haunts and putting bends in angler’s rods at last after what has been a difficult spring. Smoothound have dominated catches from both boat and shore with plenty of double figure fish tempted from all the recognized marks for the species. Appledore Shipbuilders Junior member Jack Pike has certainly enjoyed a great start to the summer season setting a new junior shore record for the club with a smoothound of 13lb 75/8oz. He also boated a superb specimen from the boat of 18lb. Michael Toogood won Appledore’s monthly rover with a hound of 14lb 23/4oz. The catches of smoothound are hopefully a good sign for the coming months with the average size of fish exceptional so early in the season. There have been a few bass tempted from marks all along the North Devon coast with lure anglers enjoying success in the clearer water. Pauline Chard of High Street tackle has enjoyed early success using lures from their shops massive selection. Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Annual Open Match at Putsborough Beach attracted forty-nine anglers from all over the West Country. The weather on the night proved perfect ensuring that all enjoyed the
event. The winner of this years competition was Ross Stanway with a dogfish of 2lb one of several he landed that also won him the pool for the best brace with his second dogfish weighing 1lb 14.5oz. Sakuma and Ilfracombe’s High Street Tackle sponsored the event enabling the top twelve anglers to walk away with a fine array of tackle in addition to the £100 first prize and £50 second prize in cash provided by the club. Several small eyed ray were caught the best a fish of 6lb 10oz to Andrew Atkinson. Ilfracombe Charter Boats are finding a few fish now with Dan Hawkins Reel Deal once again finding early season porbeagle from the North Cornwall coast with a couple of fish brought to the side of the boat the biggest estimated at 400lb. Tope are also starting to show off Ilfracombe with John Barbeary’s Bluefin and Reel Deal doing regular trips.
Putsborough Beach Open
As I write this there are no signs of significant numbers of mackerel. Ilfracombe Pier is producing consistent after dark sport with spotted ray. LRF enthusiasts will start to enjoy sport from the venue that produces a huge range of mini species each summer along with small Pollock, school bass and flatfish. FISHING GUIDES DIARY By Craig Butler I welcomed back Taunton angler Mike Tull for another guiding ,come coaching session recently. After Mike’s last successful session targeting the Bristol Channel codling earlier this year, he was keen to book another session targeting the Smoothounds. So with a good tide booked it was down to the weather god to serve up the conditions. The weather god didn’t let us down either. With perfect settled warm hot sunny conditions and a mill pond calm sea with a nice bit of tide pushing through. All we needed was the Smoothounds to pass through.
Jack Pike- 18lb smoothound
We arrived at the beach to find only a few anglers there. That was a bonus in a fine Saturday evening. I was keen to get Mike set up and get a bait out in the tide. So we skipped the technical side of rigs and baiting up crab for the minute and come back to this later. Now and again I set up a rod up myself. Purely in a lead by example form for anglers still learning the ropes. After an hour or so the demonstration rod yielded a couple of dogfish and was then bent nicely into a nice hound. After about another half hour or so Mike was concerned he wasn’t casting

far enough. I reassured him it wasn’t an issue and no sooner had I done so his rod was bending into his first Smoothound. Frustratingly it slipped the hook!! Was it a bass tho ? Next cast within minutes, this time definitely a hound on and even more frustratingly it went to ground and bumped the hook out. Then the demonstration rod went again I quickly picked it up and got the hound moving and handed the rod over to Mike who played and landed his first ever hound. But not a 100% solo effort, but at least he got to feel some action in case his rod didn’t go again. Mike continued with 100% effort and was duly rewarded with his very own solo caught hound as the light faded. To say Mike was totally elated is an understatement and rightly so. As the session ended and it was time to pack up, Mike was having none of it and was staying firm on the beach until all the bait was gone. As a guide, leaving a client on the beach isn’t really the norm. But I was happy that he was safe and aware of everything he needed to be aware of. Plus there were still a couple of anglers just up the beach. Thank Mike for using my services again. I look forward to arranging something else in the future. I’ve freed up several more evening sessions throughout June and July for the Smoothounds for anyone who fancies a bit of fun with this sporting species.

LANGSTONE
LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Without doubt, early May is a watershed for fish species in the Eastern Solent. Those pesky little whiting have gone, although the pesky dogfish (aka Solent Salmon) will be here forever. Plaice are fattening up after spawning, and the summer species of bream, smoothhound and tope arrive to give great sport.
Cup for Southsea Marina Angling Club. In the last week, tope have put in an appearance resulting in some cracking days out for those crews fishing the tope marks. Other good fish reported this month were Bill Arnold, smoothhound 18lb; Neil Glazier, smoothhound 16lb and Steve Kelly, undulate ray 14lb 4oz, all catch and release.
If you don’t want to go too far, wrasse can give a good account of themselves on rocky marks or by the many concrete structures around the area. Small hardback crabs and soft lures find the better fish. Bream are becoming more plentiful as the month progresses. They rarely appear in great numbers but when you find and can hold on to a shoal they give an amazing fight for their size. There is no mistaking a bream bite on light tackle! Kev Johnson and John Jones had an exceptional catch of 40 bream, all were returned and the two best were kept in the fish-well initially for a photo-opportunity – see picture.
Further offshore, pollack and cod are being caught over the Channel wrecks and catches are well worth the trip to get out there.
Garfish arrive shortly before the mackerel, and often follow baits right to the surface. They can surprise you with a last-minute grab of small bream baits. They make a bit of a tangle out of your carefully constructed bream rigs though. We have seen some very good smoothhounds caught. The 19lb 10oz specimen boated by Adam Houghton currently leads the Catch and Release
We were very pleased to host the RNLI at the SMAC May meeting, where volunteer speaker Brian Masters gave an excellent talk on small boat safety for anglers. Even though many of use were experienced, we all learned something new. Brian Hill ran a Lifejacket Clinic at the event, and found some important safety defects in some of the lifejackets he inspected. This reminded us all to check our lifejackets carefully. We raised £94 for the RNLI from donated prizes and a collection at the meeting.

SMAC is keen to involve more juniors and ladies in the sport. To this end Adam Houghton has been organising some Ladies Trips, which seemed to enjoyed by all (eventually) – see the photos! The juniors seem to be rather good at out-fishing their dads sometimes, so maybe we have some club champions of the future among the junior membership.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby
Summer is almost here and temperatures are at last rising and even the wind has eased a little though not on our competition days! Increased daylight hours give us small boaters a few more options both from Burnham and other venues. May 5th Four Buoys towed down to West Bay for our first away day of the year. With myself, Roy and Stephen Saxby on board. Although the weather was perfect with blue skies and flat sea there was the start of the May water which did affect fishing. We managed a couple of pollack and some pout off a wreck and just a single plaice inshore with a few fish dropped.
WELSH PICS
The following day Ultra White went out of Weymouth with Nigel Devey, Andy and Anthony Georgiou for a day drifting the banks for flats. They found a good number of turbot and some cracking plaice off the mussel beds up to around 4lb. As it was a bank holiday Joe Jeffries took his boat

out on the Monday with Chris Lindsay from West Bay. They found a few pollack and a bass to Chris off a wreck then drifted the mussel beds off Weymouth and Chris had a cracking plaice of 4lb 2oz. Fish of the month for April sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was again unclaimed as no-one made it out of Burnham. The next club competition is an away comp against Brixham Sea Angling Club on 3rd June followed by the Top Boat Trophy on the 24th. We also have our first junior competition of the year on the 9th. The next club meeting is on Thursday 21st June at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts
RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II
All local marks now buzzing with activity. Charter boats that have been out have been blessed with fantastic weather and catches to match. Smoothounds have been queuing to get on the baits. Hardback crab knocking the spots of them with squid coming a close second best. Thirty fish per boat commonplace with fish to well into double taken on most trips. Bull huss also showing in great numbers with conger also beginning to show with fish to over thirty pound taken from rough patches. This years Alykat ray comp was as usual, fully subscribed and the rays performed impeccably. Phil Lewis came out on top with a brilliant last day show taking twelve rays.
Mike Patten took second place with the biggest ray of the comp, a blonde of 12lb 2oz. Third place on a count back, was Nick Rand with most rays overall. My thanks to all competitors for their attendance to this popular event. Inshore reefs now showing well with pollack, wrasse and the first of the mackerel. Dave Rugman took Alykats first black bream today which is a great sign for the coming few weeks. Although tope have been slow, this recent settled spell will undoubtedly improve things for them. If you fancy a crack at our brilliant sport with short steaming times, give us a call there are still some vacancies.

LAST LAUGH CHARTERS By John Skeggs
What a month ! Mirror calm seas, brilliant sunshine and plenty of fish. Inshore, This time of year we dont have to travel far for some quality sport fishing, with a bin full of hardback, peeler and soft back crab there was only one species we were going to target, the smoothound. The shallow water in the Solent was to be our venue, and in just a 4hr session we managed 20 hounds in total ranging between 8 – 10lb,all were released.
Some more quality sports fishing: the Black Bream, they have arrived in good numbers with several fish around the 3lb mark .Having abandoned their normal haunts, they were difficult to track down, after a bit of scouting around we found them and the fishing has been awsome. Mid Channel Wrecks. Pollack fishing is still very good with plenty of double figure fish coming aboard. We have yet to catch our first channel Cod this season.

This week we had our first catch of Mackerel (first week in May) We have tried for the past weeks all over the West Wight area and its good to see them arrive. The run of Plaice that we had are now beginning to disperse, however if you want to put the hours in the reward is there. The Bream have arrived at the Shingles rough Christchurch and Southbourne
rough, haven't seen any real big fish yet, but there is enough fish to keep everyone happy. We fished the offshore wrecks over the last set of really small tides which was a little disappointing, with hardly any movement in the water not a lot was moving. However we did see our first Cod of the year.

WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, June 2018
Port Report May has been much kinder than the four previous months both in terms of weather and the fish caught.
wide variety of marks again during anchoring sessions and it’s good to see bream showing from marks to the east of Weymouth.
Offshore, the wrecks are steadily improving for cod with the past few days (15th to 20th May) seeing a great improvement in numbers and size of the cod. There’s a few pollack still about but, if all goes to plan, the cod will move in and take over the wrecks. This is said, of course, with fingers firmly crossed. The 2015 cod season followed this pattern and was superb; 2016 produced less cod but bigger; 2017 made everyone want to take up golf or anything other than fishing….and we wait now to see what 2018 will bring…but the signs so far in this May are promising.
June is nearly upon us. The days are long and the nights short but it’s still very chilly as this report is typed in late May. June is usually the best month for cod. There will be pollack caught from the wrecks and reefs south of the 50 degree line by the charter boats heading to Alderney and Guernsey. If the mackerel arrive in enough numbers for conger fishing, expect some reports of decent action from the eels as well as tope. The last couple of years have seen ‘big fish’ coming from the Weymouth inshore marks in the shape of smoothounds, tope, an occasional spurdog, rays and conger and a good supply of fresh bait is needed.
Boats travelling over to Alderney this most recent week have reported cod right out into the mid-Channel giving a welcome opening to these longer trips. It’s always good to have a few fish in the boxes to settle the nerves before the hunt for the Channel Island flatfish begins. On reaching the various Channel Island Banks, some very nice brill to 7lb and turbot, best so far reported at 12lb, have been caught on frozen mackerel baits or launce fillets. There are launce to be feathered up now and these can be very good fished on the drift for the flatfish. It’s extremely important to have some sandeel feathers in the tackle box and their catch rate can be massively improved if a small pirk in the 6oz range is used as an attractor to the feathers. Take the treble hook off...just use it as a weight and attractor! Flatfish enthusiasts also swear by garfish and these were an early season bonus for anglers fishing from the Weymouth Harbour piers in April (very unusual) to be frozen down for the Channel Island trips. The inshore fishing out of Weymouth has been very good on some days and hard work on others…that’s fishing. The plaice have made an extremely welcomed appearance and have boosted the charter boat bookings as they are such a popular fish to try for. Weymouth was famous for its enormous plaice and has suffered badly over the past three years with their disappearance along with the mussel beds. There are sure signs that things have and are improving with a reasonable run of plaice with a few very fine specimens to 5lb making it onto the social media ‘pages’. Blonde rays and undulates with a mention of small-eyed rays have appeared from a
Alderney’s tope run in May and early June was always a highlight of the first trips but with mackerel arriving later and later or not at all, the tope fishing has fizzled out. This is a great shame as anglers will no doubt remember the insane sessions on Speedy and the Banc de Mileau when it was a common sight to see several anglers at once playing hard fighting tope to the net. We need the mackerel!!

Bream are most likely from the east side marks in June although there may be early arrivals in the Portland Bill area. The Shambles is expected to produce turbot and the first early brill with anchoring often proving to be the better option especially if the rays are also on the bank. The water in Portland Harbour has been crystal clear this past week and there have been some big mullet cruising around as there is within Weymouth’s Inner Harbour. Mullet enthusiasts will tell us that this is the hardest fighting fish we have pound for pound and that they are a real challenge to catch. It would be too difficult to do on a noisy charter boat but no doubt small boat anglers could enjoy some serious sport with these fish especially given the size of the ones cruising around in Portland Harbour. It’s been a hard start to the year but thankfully fishing has now improved and will continue to do so. The Weymouth and Portland Charter skippers very much appreciate the efforts you, the customers, make to visit these Dorset ports and we are all in this together hoping for a good summer’s sport. Thank you for coming to Weymouth and Good Luck in June!

BCFSA 2018 PAIRS COMPETION By Phil Lewis The 6th of May saw the first of this years Boat Pairs competitions for members of the Bristol Channel Federation of Sea Anglers. The competition is made up of 4 boat trips held through the year. On a flat calm sea and in glorious sunshine, 8 pairs of anglers set forth from Minehead on board Teddie Boy and Osprey, with both boats heading down in to Porlock Bay Apart from the obligatory and pest-like dogfish, different species proved hard to find and both skippers had to work hard to put their anglers onto the fish. On Osprey Tom Fitzpatrick found some huss and a codling and later managed to boat some poor cod and pollack. Tom and Rick Crosby managed to catch 5 of the 6 species caught on Osprey, with Steve Lodge weighing in with the heaviest fish, a bull huss. On Teddie Boy, Joh Mays recorded an 8lb bull huss close inshore. A move further
down the coast saw poor cod, pour and congers come in before a move out into the deeper water at slack tide saw the two best fish of the day being caught. The first was a PB tope of 23lbs for Tony Summerton and then a heavier tope fell to Craig Willis at 31lbs 4 oz (estimated by formula). 6 species were caught on Teddie Boy with Malcolm Bayldon and John taking 4 each. The second of the 4 trips will again be out of Minehead in June. Result: Individual 1st Tom Fitzpatrick

The new Coulam 16 Wheelyboat will be officially launched on Friday 25 May. Attending the official launch will be the main funders of the project, including representatives from Natural Resources Wales and Welsh Water. This vessel will provide safe, dignified and easy access to the water for all anglers, regardless of impairment.

Mountain Ash Fly Fishers Association is a fly-fishing club based in the Cynon Valley in South Wales. It was formed in 1958 and leases Penderyn Reservoir which it operates as a membership and day ticket water for stocked rainbow trout. In recent years MAFFA has made a concerted effort to improve the facilities there, particularly for disabled anglers, including improvements to pathways, parking, and accessible casting platforms. These new and updated facilities will enable schools, groups and organisations such as the local Scouts to try fishing for themselves. The Wheelyboat project is the final element that will transform the reservoir into a fully accessible fishery for all to enjoy. Also benefitting from the new Wheelyboat will be members of the Welsh Disabled Fly Fishing Team, some of whom practice at Penderyn. Developed by The Wheelyboat Trust and J M Coulam Boatbuilders, the Coulam 16 Wheelyboat is a purpose-built angling boat ingeniously modified for roll-on, rolloff wheelchair access from a pontoon via a hydraulic platform fitted inside the boat. The Wheelyboat allows people with mobility impairments to fish alongside and on equal terms with their non-disabled counterparts, an important factor in the quality of life they are able to lead. The Wheelyboat is
powered by a quiet and environmentally friendly Torqeedo electric outboard. The project to provide an accessible Wheelyboat and to improve access to the pontoon at Penderyn Reservoir cost a total of £18,000 and was funded by Natural Resources Wales, Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust, Sport Wales and Pen-y-Cymoedd Community Fund. The Wheelyboat Trust contributed £5,273 from funds it raised towards the Wheelyboat, which cost a total of £10,882. Chris Bond, Chairman of Mountain Ash Fly Fishers explains: “Given the right access and equipment, angling is an activity that most people with disabilities can participate in very effectively. It is true to say that there is more to fishing than catching fish – being able to take part easily, safely and often independently are important factors. So too are the benefits of taking part to disabled anglers' health, well-being and life experiences. The Coulam 16 Wheelyboat is a purpose-built angling boat modified for wheelchair access and is an essential facility on waters like Penderyn where, due to the nature of the environment, accessible bank fishing is limited." Andy Beadsley, Director of The Wheelyboat Trust says, “The Wheelyboat provides a safe and stable platform for people with sensory impairments and learning difficulties who want to get on the water and fish. It is wonderful to have such a vessel to provide access to the trout fishing on Penderyn Reservoir as well as getting more and more people involved in outdoor activities. Our vision is to enable as many people to enjoy waterborne activities as possible. This launch will particularly make a difference to older people whose mobility is declining as well as those of all ages who have mobility impairments.”
The Wheelyboat Trust relies on the support of individuals, companies and charitable organisations to fund its activities. Donations can be made in a variety of ways including online at: www.wheelyboats.org/donate.html.

Lymington and District Sea Fishing Club Bait Supplied Boat Match League 2018Competition 1/6: Lymington. The first round of the bait-supplied boat match league sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre was fished on the 7th of April 2018 from Lymington aboard Voyager’ (skippered by Kevin Duell) and ‘Last Laugh’ (skippered by John Skeggs)
RESULTS
Owing to the popularity of the league, it has now been possible to expand the League to two boats for each match. This exciting change means that not only will anglers be competing against each other, but also against others on the competing boat for the top spot. With spirits high and everyone keen to get the first match underway, both boats hastily made their way out of the Lymington River and headed West. Soon after navigating Hurst Spit the boats split off with Last Laugh opting to fish over mixed ground whilst Voyager headed to Christchurch Ledge to fish over a shallow rock mark. From the outset it was apparent that due to the long hard winter we have endured fishing would be tough, and this proved to be the case with fish coming sporadically to both boats in the form of mostly dogfish and pout. In an attempt to increase the species count, Last Laugh joined Voyager on Christchurch Ledge. Alas the usually prolific rock sport failed to produce the usual suspects and catches between the two boats were quite similar with the notable exception of a small eyed ray falling to Malcolm Gerrish to push him slightly ahead. With both skippers keen to get the edge over the other and bring their boat to victory, further moves were made which saw Last Laugh heading East onto a area of clean ground on the Shingles and Voyager heading deeper on Christchurch Ledge. Both proved to be wise moves. With the water clarity poor, bottom dwelling fish seemed to the order of the day and anglers prepped their bait packs accordingly. Richard Day aboard Last Laugh was first in with a decent thornback ray, followed by all onboard catching a mixture of thornback, small eyed and spotted rays during the flood tide with several fine thornback rays topping 11lb 3.5oz. Whilst fishing in deeper water aboard Voyager, anglers were finding a mixture of pout, dogfish, smoothounds and several fine rays including a thornback ray of 10lb 2oz to Chris Ellis and an Undulate ray of 12lb to Ed Taylor. Whilst it was unclear how each of the boats had fared, both boats headed to the Shingles in search of plaice for the remaining part of the match. Unfortunately the water clarity didn’t help matters and the plaice didn’t materialise. However, this gave anglers the chance to find bonus fish with which to try to obtain the slightest edge in the competition. Chris Ellis sneaked a third species of ray to top the scoring on Voyager on the last drop, pushing Ed Taylor down to second place. A three way battle on Last Laugh ended up as an equal first between Arran Harmer and Steve Ellicott nudging out Brian Dawkins to second by four points. Despite the testing conditions and relatively few species found, a number of excellent rays were caught and it was definitely a day in which bonus fish were needed in order to win the match. In the end it was apparent that Last Laugh had managed to find the numbers of fish albeit consisting of fewer species than Voyager. Overall, 152 fish comprising of 7 species were caught and returned. Match 1 Results: Last Laugh: 1. Steve Ellicott. 114 pts, 1. Arran Harmer 114 pts, 3 Brian Dawkins 110 pts, 4 Rich Day 105. 92 pts 5. Robin Lane 90 pts, 6.Gavin Sloper 86 pts, 7. Ed Taylor 90 pts, 3 Steve Bachelor 77 pts, 4 Paul Hollyoake 60 pts 5 Chris Rogers 55 pts, 5 Malc Gerrish 55 pts, 7 Trevor Strawbridge 40 pts Round 2 of the League will be fished from Poole on the 12th of May 2018 aboard Mistress Linda and Boney M.

‘Bream Galore’ On Saturday the 5th of May Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational boat trip aboard ‘Voyager’ from Lymington. The plan was to try for plaice and early bream inshore and boy were members treated to a fantastic day weather and sport wise. The first stop of the day was near to Christchurch Ledge where a few drifts were made for the pollack which resulted in good numbers of fish topping 3lb. Following this an area near to Southbourne Rough was fished at anchor and from the outset it was evident that the bream had arrived with single and double shots quickly coming up through the crystal clear water. Other fish included, dogfish and a thornback ray to Robbie Brooks. In an attempt to try and find some of the larger bream a move East onto Christchurch Ledge was made which unfortunately didn’t prove fruitful and therefore a further move was made onto a deeper area of mixed ground. This resulted in more bream (with the majority being returned), numerous dogfish, a nice smoothhound to Karl Bates and several nice plaice to Robin Lane. Overall an excellent day was had by all with good numbers of fish coming all around the boat.

THAMES ESTUAURY
BRIGHTLINGSEA, Essex
Thames Estuary

You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

PRIVATE VENTURE By Art savage
