Members of the public fishing recreationally should be extremely concerned over a new and rapidly expanding commercial fishery which threatens the South West’s wrasse populations. The Angling Trust is calling for an immediate suspension of the fishery supplying live, wild-caught wrasse to the salmon aquaculture market where they are used to remove parasitic sea lice from farmed salmon. Official government figures from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) show that in 2015 89 tonnes of wrasse species were caught and used as cleaner fish as an alternative to traditional pesticides to manage sea lice numbers. Many of the wrasse are being taken from the inshore waters of the South West of England. Wrasse are highly important recreational angling species and play an important role in the resident and tourist angling activity which supports thousands of jobs throughout the South West of England and which was valued at £165m to the regional economy back in 2005 (1). Generations of young anglers fish for wrasse as they enter the sport and recent years have seen an exciting new development of specialist lure angling for wrasse. Landings data from the MMO (2) shows that the value of live, wild-caught wrasse at prices as high as £150 per kilo makes what used to be a ‘trash fish’, or one only used as pot bait, the single most valuable wild capture fishery in the UK compared to wild sea bass and lobster that can fetch as much as £15 -17 per kilo. With no controls on how much can be caught, and very little known about the impact on wrasse stocks and the ecosystem, sea anglers are hugely concerned that

wrasse stocks in English waters could be decimated by the rush to profit from this hugely valuable, yet totally unmanaged, fishery. Little is known about the sustainability of wrasse populations and what impact commercial scale harvesting will have on marine ecosystems where wrasse play an important role. However, anecdotal evidence suggests the hugely expensive operation of shipping wrasse live from the South West of England to Scotland is only necessary because localised Scottish wrasse stocks have already been depleted by the demand from salmon farms. Official figures from the MMO add to the confusion about the extent of the wrasse fishery with the aggregated monthly landings for 2015 being reported as 89 tonnes with a value of £5m (3) and the annual statistical report for the same period reporting over 40 tonnes landings valued at £1.1m (4). Yet despite the huge discrepancies in MMO data being drawn to their attention the MMO have not been able to provide any explanation but it is clearly a very significant new fishery. More accurate data at local level are also hard to come by. The Angling Trust is writing to the MMO, the Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs) and the Welsh Assembly Government to request immediate measures to stop the live capture of wild wrasse for the aquaculture market using the precautionary approach under section 153 of the Marine & Coastal Access Act until there is sufficient evidence to establish: 1) whether it is sustainable, 2) what impact the removal of wrasse has on the ecosystem, and 3) whether the removal of an important recreational asset for anglers in the South West of England to supply the Scottish aquaculture market is in line with the

The Angling Trust has repeatedly called on the salmon farming industry to increase the pace of movement towards farming salmon in closed containment systems to keep them away from wild fish and the naturally occurring parasitic sea lice. The decline of wild sea trout and salmon stocks throughout the West coast of Scotland and beyond has been clearly linked with infestations of sea lice from salmon farms. Chemical treatments of farmed fish have been increasing rapidly and diversifying in recent years due to resistance building up in sea lice populations. Attempts are being made to supply the aquaculture market with captive bred wrasse. However, the complicated lifecycle of wrasse means that this is still far from being a reality at a significant scale. The general public should be alarmed that wrasse stocks could be destroyed by uncontrolled commercial fishing pressure and a lack of control measures from fisheries managers. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said; “Members of the public fishing recreationally for publicly-owned wrasse stocks in South West England will be appalled to learn that wrasse, once of no commercial value but a highly valuable species to those fishing recreationally, are now being targeted and transported live up to Scotland to help remove sea lice from the environmentally damaging salmon farming industry. The impact of this rapidly expanding fishery on localised wrasse stocks, and on the functioning of the ecosystem, is currently unknown. Precautionary measures must be taken to stop this emerging and unmanaged fishery from wiping out vulnerable wrasse populations before the impact and sustainability of the fishery can be established.” Malcolm Gilbert, Conservation Officer for the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers, said; “Alarm bells are already ringing throughout the recreational angling community. Anglers were denied keeping any bass to eat for the first half of 2016 and are again in 2017, with a one bass bag limit for second half of the year. Yet it was anglers who have consistently demanded from government a more restrictive management approach for what was primarily an angling species before the escalation of commercial fishing threatened stocks. Will wrasse be next in line?”

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke Some great fishing to be had and subtle changes as we approach spring with several new species coming to the net, including bass several now being caught on most trips manly small schoolies , a few hounds being reported mostly small but a welcome addition to the catches, still plenty of rays to bend the rods with some massive females being caught which are being released due to being fat with spawn. Dog fish have made an appearance anglers are cursing them as they are taking baits meant for value fish and they always seem to be so well hooked and a bugger to disgorge. Still plenty of whiting but these fish will soon start to move away now. Bass fishing will be what most anglers will be booking the boats for with two of the most productive months ahead of

us and if its anything like last year it should be good but we must follow the rules on this species but a very exciting fish to hook up with and as I write this report I hear that the rod caught record has been broken with a great bass from the charter boat Skerry Bell by angler Wayne Milton of 19 pounds 5oz a great catch and well done for releasing the fish which means the antiquated record cannot be claimed as it has to be weighed ashore and killed what a joke. In summing up it’s a great time to be booking the charter boats they have had a hard time over the last few months with cod not showing up and need the anglers on board now as many charter boats are feeling the pinch with many thinking of throwing in the towel so they all need the anglers support if you want them around in the future.

PLYMOUTH / DEVON BAITS

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

The arrival of some decent weather at long last has resulted in a dramatic improvement in catches over the past few weeks although it is fair to say most of the better specimens are being landed by local anglers making the trip up to fish Chesil Beach. The stand-out fish during the past month has to be Andy Webb’s huge shore-caught turbot of 11-6 which based on local specimen weights works out at a huge 568%. I would have to say that this already looks like the leading contender for the Wyvern Castle Trophy. Congratulations Andy – a true fish of a lifetime. Whilst many anglers head up to Chesil at this time of year in the hope of getting in amongst the plaice, it is the outstanding ray fishing that has taken centre stage with undulates, small eyed, thornback and blonde rays all being recorded by Plymouth anglers. One of the largest undulates caught recently was a cracker of 15-3 by Rodbenders SAC member Eddie Reilly whilst fellow club member and top-dipper Steve Arnold landed another good one of 14-10. The water clarity at Chesil seems to be taking an age to clear this year which has resulted in many rays being caught during the daytime. Most reports of evening sessions seem to be centred around plague-like proportions of dogfish. More locally and whilst not necessarily in large numbers, some cracking plaice have been caught by anglers fishing in the Salcombe Estuary. The best of these was an absolute cracker of 4-3 caught by Chris Morris of Roving Rods SAC and weighed in at Robs Tackle and Bait Supplies. Nick Perrin of DOE SAC also found a cracker of 3-3 and not far behind was Nick Green of Castaways SAC with a good plaice of 3-2. It would seem that most of these fish were caught from those deeper water rock marks that give way to sand rather than from the shallower beaches of Slapton and Beesands which, compared to last year’s plaice bonanza, still

seem very quiet. The warmer temperatures have certainly resulted in an increase in the amount of mullet now showing in the local estuaries and this will only get better as we move into May and June. I have also seen a few reports of some smaller gilthead bream being caught from Kingsbridge and some of the rivers in Cornwall. During early May the crabs start making their way up the shallower estuaries from the deeper water and this large-scale crab movement usually coincides with some decent gilt fishing, particularly if we get a few settled warm days. If you can’t get crab then lug is a good back-up (although this can attract the schoolies). Neap tides and fishing at the bottom of the various creeks as the tide drops-out is the best bet for success.

Double figure Ling on Size Matters

Following its’ winter season in Liverpool, its’ good to see the charter boat Size Matters back in Sutton Harbour for the summer. Her skipper Kevin Mckie tells me that the middle channel wrecks have been producing Ling to 27lb, Pollack to 12lb and Congers up to 20lb all on the drift. The inshore reefs are also producing well with Ling, Pollack, Cod and Whiting all showing in recent catches. The abundance of mackerel and herring is a hopefully a good sign for the coming season as last year the mackerel didn’t show until well into June. By the time of the next report some larger Cod should be putting in an appearance. Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 reports that the launce have now arrived on the Eddystone and this has resulted in some good reef fishing for Pollack with fish up to 13-12 being recorded (top quality sport on lighter tackle). The contact details for both Size Matters and Sea Angler 2 can be found in this paper. Nothing better than getting afloat this time of year from the port of Plymouth!

Dennis Puttick caught a nice Ray of 7lb 13oz on Thursday 13th April, and his son AJ caught a 5lb 8oz fish in the same session in Normans Bay. Jim Whippy caught a 4lb fish at the woodyard, during the day on Friday 14th and Joe Plumstead also caught a 3lb 9oz fish on the Sunday. David Moule caught a nice 7lb 8oz Thornback at Langney Point on Thursday 20th April using bluey the same bait used by Dennis and Jim. Anglers Den have started a free to enter catch and release bass competition sponsored by Black Rock. Anglers issued with a bass card for April can register a bass by taking a picture of it on a measure to show is over 42cm with their entry card, then return the fish alive! At the end of the month the entries are then drawn to decide the winner, winning a unique Anglers Den specimen hoody and Black Rock bass rod. With 100 anglers now entered after 20 days only 1 bass has been recorded so far! A nice bass of around 7lb caught by Paddy Flanagan. It does make you wonder where these incredible figures for the enormous amount of bass that recreational anglers are supposed to be taking!! Clubs in this region see no evidence of this and we all record the bass caught in our clubs over many years!!

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

Things are hotting up on the inshore side with the first decent hits of bream rattling the baits last week on the spring tide. A range of sizes up to about 2lb were on show, we usually expect to see the bigger fish arrive a couple of weeks after the first ones. It’s nice to see so many anglers using circle hooks to target the bream to cause minimum damage as they are mostly catch and release. Out on the wrecks the pollock are still in abundance on the drift. Last weekend we had a tow for sandeels whilst turbot fishing using our trawl and then used the sandeels to great effect to target the pollock. We have had the first summer cod and bonus

john dory out on the wrecks as well, which is a good couple of weeks earlier than last year, let’s hope this is a good sign of things to come. And finally our fishing at anchor hasn’t slowed up at all with plenty of decent spurdogs around despite the warmer temperatures. Ian Napier landed a cracking PB of 20lb the other day, one of 3 he had during a short spell over slack water. Fish of the Month definitely goes to Dean Lodge of Species Hunt UK for his 22lb 2oz undulate ray he caught during a hectic day on one of the banks south of Poole. Beating our previous boat record by 2lb. Off to Alderney for the first time this year tomorrow.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins he start to the Bream season kicked off earlier than for many years with goods catches coming aboard from the 1st weekend of April, all the local marks are producing with several early season bream weighing in around the 3lb mark, and young Andy Jewson on his 1st fishing trip with his 1st drop landed a fine Bream of 3lb 1ozs much to Dads dismay who had not even finished baiting up. The better fishing has been in the harder tides as expected but even in the weaker ones plenty of fish have been landed. Drift fishing along the shores has produced some fine Plaice up to 2 1/2lb along with several small Turbot, Gurnards and Garfish. For those anglers wishing to do species hunt trips Poole is an ideal venue as last weekend aboard the Mistress Linda over 23 different species

were landed. Further off to sea during the weaker tides plenty of sport has been had with Tope, Spurdogs and Blonde Rays. Wreck fishing has been consistent with the time of year producing some fine Pollack and early Cod. The banks to the west have produced some fine Bass to over 12lb which after being photographed were duly returned by the anglers. Andrew Atkinson 15lb 6oz spurdog

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Dan Hawkins Charter Boat Reel Deal has arrived in Ilfracombe for the summer season and has got off to a flying start once again targeting the big porbeagle that hunt the waters off the North Cornish coast. On Thursday April 6th Mark Watts hooked a huge porbeagle estimated at 350lb and successfully brought the fish to the side of the boat where it was carefully released. The fish was tempted using Ammo mackerel and chum on a 10/0 owner hook. This was followed a few days a later with a shark estimated at 223lb. Each season sees several of these huge hard fighting shark hooked and brought to the boat where they are of course carefully released. A smaller member of the shark family has been providing consistent sport off Ilfracombe; spurdog numbers have increased considerably over recent years with the season running on well into the spring. Andrew Atkinson landed the biggest spurdog of a day afloat on John Barbeary’s Bluefin at 15lb 6oz with Appledore Shipbuilders. Another party of local anglers enjoyed some hectic sport off Ilfracombe aboard John Barbeary’s ‘Bluefin’. Spurdog provided the bulk of fish caught with upwards of 50 brought to the boat. Several quality conger to almost 40lb were also boated putting a serious curve into the anglers rods. The biggest spurdog of the day was a fine specimen of 16lb 8oz to the rod of Bill Caasar. Holsworthy Sea Anglers also enjoyed a great day on Bluefin with skipper John Barbeary out of Ilfracombe. This was the clubs last session on the spurdog this season. Well over 100 spurdog were brought to the boat the biggest a superb specimen of 19lb to Graham Verral. Andrew Atkinson won Appledore Shipbuilders Easter Competition fished at Appledore Rocks in the lower estuary with a flounder scaling 1lb 41/2oz. James Thomas won Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Spring Rover with a specimen small eyed ray

weighing 11lb 13oz. James father Wayne Thomas took second and third places with a small eyed ray scaling 9lb 10oz and a blonde ray of 14lb 2oz. The fish were all caught off Minehead aboard Steve Webber’s boat Osprey. The clubs party landed around 25 ray, small eyed, thornback and blonde ray. They also landed smoothound, bull huss and dogfish. Shore anglers in the competition landed several quality fish the best and fourth place in the competition went to Daniel Welch who landed a small ray of 9lb 5oz. This bodes well for the clubs open competition at Putsborough beach on Saturday May 6th. Kevin Pike won Appledore Shipbuilders monthly Rover with a smoothound scaling 8lb 11/2oz. In runner up spot was David Barnes with a smoothound weighing 6lb 41/2oz. The arrival of smoothound close to a month before expected is encouraging news and bodes well for the coming months. Jack Pike dominated the junior section with a rockling of 15oz and a codling of 3lb 4oz. Graham Snow secured victory in the March heat of the North Devon Sea League with his fine mullet 4lb 13.5oz. It was the only fish brought to the scales. Jack Pike landed a fine bull huss of 10lbs 15ozs to set a new Appledore Shipbuilders junior record! The bull huss secured victory in Appledore Shipbuilders 24 hour Rover. In runner up spot was Michael Toogood with a huss of 6lb 6oz and third was Andrew Atkinson with a dogfish of 2lb 3oz. The next few weeks should see the arrival of mackerel and with them should come bass and potentially more porbeagle shark. Smoothound fishing will take off and small-eyed ray will move onto the surf beaches as the sand is warmed by the spring sunshine. On rocky marks there is every chance of a big bull huss. Mullet anglers will be targeting thin lips in the local estuaries and thick lips from both coast, harbour and estuary. ALDERNEY

ALDERNEY REPORT By Mark Harding Shore Report It’s a damn sight better that last month for sure with most sessions resulting in target fish being caught. Some Gilthead bream are still around, mainly small fish with the best at 2lb 12oz. Nothing like the stonker Jasper had last month which has been confirmed as a new Alderney record at 6lb 2oz. There has been plenty of Bass on the lures to 5lb+ which provide magic sport especially in the crystal clear conditions we are getting now. Hard and soft plastics working. The Bass are also taking bottom baits too but these fish have been smaller but plenty there. Black Bream showing on the small baits too, not big fish – average 1lb. Plenty of Mullet about too, again fantastic fun in these conditions of flat calm and oily seas. A little harder to catch but rewards are there. Both Thick Lippeds and Golden Greys being caught. Lots of Garfish reported too, good float sport on the end of the Commercial Quay or Breakwater and we have also had the first Mackerel caught this week so we’re expecting more to arrive very soon. Some massive Scad too, James Clarke has rocked the Alderney record several times with several fish of 1lb 5oz and 1lb 6oz, shore caught record is 1lb 7oz! Boat Report Charter boats have rocked up on their annual visits. At the time of writing a tough week was had, tides were

really small and not providing the movement needed so results on the Turbot have been sparse compared to expectation. Boats however are still getting 20+ fish per day but few keepers. Some nice Brill caught though with Paul Whittall’s Offshore Rebel had a 60 minute spell whereby they nailed three specimen fish, 5lb 2oz, 6lb 11oz and Willy had the best fish 7lb 5oz! This beat another cracking fish he had the day before, one of 7lb 2oz so Willy was well chuffed! There has been a few Tope caught and plenty of Bull Huss. Plenty of Launce on the banks and Mackerel yet to show in good numbers but should arrive. Wrecking has been really good with double figure Pollack still being caught, first of the Cod showing and Ling and Congers at slack water to fish baits. Alderney Angling Festival Plans are in place for the 32nd one, this year it is being held on 14th October till 21st October. Flights and accommodation still available. Prize table around £5,000 in cash, fantastic event. For details contact Charlie at festival@cwgsy.net or ring 07781422625 and leave a message. On a personal note my new boat arrives mid-May so next report there’ll be plenty of my ginger mug to show ya Looking forward to it, till then tight lines and to those that visit Alderney and particularly our B&B thanks so much for your custom! BRIGHTON MARINA AND BEACHES......Plenty of plaice coming up not unusual to catch bags of 20plus fish... black lug tipped squid seems to be doing the trick...

DON’T BRING BACK AN INVADER! ANGLING TRUST’S APPEAL TO ANGLERS FISHING ABROAD The Angling Trust is calling on globe-trotting anglers to minimise the risk of bringing unwanted invaders to Britain that could potentially damage fishing in rivers and lakes. With fishing abroad becoming increasingly popular amongst UK anglers, the risk of inadvertently transporting invasive non-native species into Britain has increased. And while studies show almost half of anglers fishing in the UK regularly carry out ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ procedures to help reduce the spread of invasive species, there’s no obligation in some other European countries to clean or dry equipment before leaving the fishery. Research carried out by the Angling Trust at 34 fisheries in northern France showed that 20 lakes (59%) contained at least one invasive aquatic plant or invertebrate – including the Caspian slender mysid (Limnomysis benedeni), a “high alert” shrimp species not currently present in the UK. In addition, three different crayfish species and the highly aggressive top mouth gudgeon and black bullhead were also discovered. Emily Smith, Angling Trust’s Invasive Species Manager, said: “Many of the fisheries surveyed required anglers to arrive with dry nets, or in some cases the fishery dipped the anglers’ equipment in disinfectant before they could start fishing. However, as there was no obligation to clean or dry the equipment upon leaving the lake, it raises concern as many aquatic invasive species have been shown to survive for over a fortnight on damp angling equipment. “With frequent ferry and Eurotunnel links between Europe and the UK, if fishing equipment and clothing are not thoroughly cleaned and dried following a trip abroad, invasive species could be inadvertently transported back into the UK and introduced into a British water body on the next fishing outing. “We're asking anglers fishing abroad to follow the same procedures they should be carrying out in the

UK – check, clean and dry equipment every time you fish.” While this researched focused on fisheries in France, many other popular fishing destinations In Europe have invasive species of major biosecurity concern to the UK. In particular, there are at least 10 aquatic invasive species in the Netherlands, as well as the salmon louse (Gyrodactylus salaris) in Norway which is having a devastating impact on their salmon fisheries. The appeal comes as Invasive Species Week seeks to raise awareness of the devastating impact non-native species, such as the Quagga Mussel and Killer Shrimp, can have on British plants, animals and ecosystems. As well as preying on, out-competing and displacing native wildlife, aquatic non-native species can spread disease and block waterways. Their presence can sometimes be so damaging it can lead to significant changes to the entire ecology of a water body. Recreational facilities, including angling, can suffer as a result of invasive species. Fish populations may reduce or change and invasive plants may restrict navigation through waterways, clog up propellers and add significantly to the management costs of our waterways. Practising good biosecurity measures such as Check, Clean, Dry can help to stop the spread of invasive plants and animals from one water body to another. Animals, eggs, larvae and plant fragments are easily transported in or on equipment, shoes, clothing and other damp places and can survive for a long time. For example, a killer shrimp can survive in the moist fold of a wader for up to 15 days. While the financial costs of invasive species can run into millions of pounds, the cost to the UK’s wildlife can be irreplaceable. Mark Owen, Head of Freshwater for the Angling Trust, said: “Emily’s research has highlighted the potential threat to fish and fishing on our doorstep. It is in every anglers’ interest to do all they can to prevent the spread of invasive species and follow the Check, Clean, Dry advice – even when fishing abroad.”

An established trout fishery for many years, Draycote Reservoir is a 600-acre lowland reservoir near Rugby famous for its buzzer hatches and large grown-on brown and rainbow trout. Designed and developed by The Wheelyboat Trust and JM Coulam Boatbuilders, the Coulam 16 Wheelyboat stems from the fundamental desire of disabled anglers and wheelchair users in particular, to have the same opportunities to fish as the able-bodied. The boat is based on Jim Coulam’s 16’ reservoir fishing boat design and has been adapted to provide wheelchair users with step free access on board. With an open cockpit and level floor throughout, the disabled angler can choose to sit at the bow or the stern and is able to drive and operate the boat quite independently. The unique design features of the boat are not immediately obvious, making it a thoroughly enjoyable experience for disabled anglers. Wheelchair users board the Coulam 16 Wheelyboat via a ramp from a pontoon onto a hydraulic platform that lowers to floor level. Removable handrails around the platform help keep the angler secure and simplify the boarding and

disembarking procedure, which means that only one able-bodied helper is required for assistance. The boat has a 6’ beam, low centre of gravity and is very stable. In normal conditions wheelchair brakes are sufficient to hold the angler in place, but D-rings on the floor provide secure strapping points when required. The project cost £9,200 and was funded by the Janet Nash Charitable Settlement, Draycote FlyFishers Association and their members, and Fishery Management (UK) Ltd which has been running the fishery on Draycote since 2011. Andy Beadsley, Director of The Wheelyboat Trust, says “Angling is an activity that most disabled people can participate in very successfully given the right access and equipment. Our Wheelyboats overcome all the difficulties of accessing waters like Draycote and we are delighted that Ifor and his team have become the latest fishery to operate a Wheelyboat. This is the 180th Wheelyboat to be launched and is a particularly proud moment for me being the 100th Wheelyboat launched since I took over as Director in 2002.” The Wheelyboat Trust relies on the support of individuals, companies and charitable organisations to fund its activities. Donations can be made in a variety of ways including online at www.wheelyboats.org/ donate.html.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

April started with a bit better weather and Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden managed to get out mid week. It had been a while since any boats had launched from Burnham so they were desperate to find a few fish. Thornies, eels and dogs aplenty after a couple of moves they found a codling and also the first bass of the year with one of around 5lb to Mark and a 6lber to Pete. Both fish returned due to the ridiculous restrictions put on recreational anglers after years of over fishing by the commercial fleet!! Sunday the 9th we held our first competition of the year the Vicoue Trophy. Six boats and 15 anglers took part in what started out as ideal conditions with a southerly wind and flat seas. From the forecast though we knew this would change in the afternoon and sure enough on the turn of the tide the wind picked up and turned NW making it fairly sloppy. None the less lots of fish caught but no insize cod which was a suprise. 1St Richard Saxby with a thornie of 14lb 3oz and 92%, 2nd Aaron Devey with a thornie of 13lb 4oz and 85%, 3rd Nigel Devey with a LSD of 2lb 8oz and 71%. over the Easter weekend and found half a dozen turbot and a couple of brill up to 5lbs. Mark Bowden managed another mid-week trip with a friend and steamed down to Porlock where they had the first hound of the year but got dogged out. A move back closer to home produced lots of rays and conger finishing off a busy session. This Friday we have our presentation evening followed by a comp on Sunday so a busy period coming up with hopefully lots to report on next month. Fish of the month sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge for March was again unclaimed as no boats made it out. May's competitions start off with the Top Boat Trophy on Sunday the 7th and is followed by the second attempt at the Presidents cup on the 21st. We have a club meeting on Thursday 18th of May at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front. Sea Angling News, May 2017

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Keith Wigglesworth

As predicted in last month’s edition of SAN, the smoothound run has begun in earnest, with some boats catching upwards of 40 hounds per trip. Squid or hardback crab appear to be the effective choice of bait that’s tempting fish of up to 15lb to the hook. The hounds are showing up at most marks, but most noticeably in Porlock Bay and on the Minehead back sands. As ever, the weather has had a large impact on the Minehead fleet being able to get out to some of the marks but one of the positive aspects of fishing out of the port is that there is excellent fishing to be had right on the doorstep. Some of the best ray marks are just a couple of hundred yards away. The ray fishing is also producing some nice fish, with several 20lb+ blondes being brought to the boat. The inevitable huss and congers, with hordes of dogfish, are

helping the anglers bring a steady stream of fish in and provide a bit of variety. As the month progresses the summer species will start to show and clean water inside the Foreland should produce some decent Pollack. For the Species hunters out there, wrasse, gurnard and an early black bream or two will hopefully put in an appearance. One recent trip produced 14 species which, for this early in the year, is a good sign of a possible bumper summer. There are still some spaces on the 2 day Minehead Species competition on July 8th and 9th. So if you think you can cut the mustard as a species angler, why not give it a go. Entry details can be found on the poster at the front of this edition. Tight lines everyone.

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Things have been ticking along nicely here in the Bristol Channel the past month or so. Catches of spring codling, bull Huss, rays, bass have all featured strongly and the first of the Smoothounds are slowly starting to appear west of Minehead. Sole are starting to appear in catches around the Severn bridge. Numbers of spring codling have been positive and it's been reassuring to see a half healthy sign of smaller fish under A lb . Maybe our codling stock is not as dark as thought at the back end of last year. Those anglers targeting bass have been well rewarded with 4-6lb fish from localised marks. Worm and crab baits doing the business. Thornback catches have remained consistent from Weston's sand point area and from Brean down and also the low water reef systems between Watchet and Hinckley point. With all the construction work being carried out just off shore for the new power stations jetty. The disturbance being caused has no doubt seen catches drop away . Both the Hinckley and Shurton bars reefs being effected by this work. The past month has also seen a good number of quality

bull Huss caught from Minehead at low water . It's not unheard of, but mid April we saw a good few caught by anglers targeting the rays. The month ahead will see the Smoothounds really move it and stir up a lot of enthusiasm. As alway , with the return of the hounds it's a crazy time and getting hold of some peeler crab can be tricky at times . It's a good idea to get a stock of crab in the freezer as a back up while they are a decent size and they are plentiful . Any week now there will be hounds in good numbers giving some fantastic sport and the size of the crab available will drop away. While on the subject of Smoothounds and the issues with handling and weighing of them. This species might seem like a hardy thing but every year on more than a few occasions anglers witnessed other anglers weighing them by the upper lip or even worse by the gill holes. This is not what anyone wants to see with any species but especially not with Smoothounds. A Simple weighing sling is all it takes to have a bit of care and respect for the fish. On that note I wish you all A good fishy month ahead and enjoy. Tight lines and happy hunting

LAST LAUGH REPORT By John Skeggs The new season is under way, with settled weather and excellent fishing, we couldn't wish for a better start. First to arrive inshore, was the Plaice. A flowing trace loaded with bling and baited with black lug, rag, squid or prawn will most certainly tempt one of these specimens. Some boats are reporting as many as 15 a session, not massive fish, but ranging from 8oz to 4lb. Shortly after the plaice arrived the

smoothounds turned up, along with Black bream. Compared to last season these are two weeks earlier. There are even reports of the odd mackerel being caught.Lets hope they stay around this year. Our first wrecking trip of the season saw some quality Pollack caught, ranging between 5 – 12lb. Another couple of weeks, we should see the first of the Cod on the wrecks.

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage Inshore this month we have seen most of the summer fish arriving around our area. Bream have just started to show along Christchurch bay with Garfish and Pollock over the same area. The Plaice are also still over the banks to the east along with some early Smoothound. The middle ground banks have also just started to produce the usual Small eye rays and the occasional Thornback ray, so the only thing missing is the Mackerel which we will hopefully see next month. Off shore wrecking started off quite promising however over the neaps it went to pieces with just a few fish coming to the net, we will have to wait for the next set of big tides to hopefully see the changes.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, May 2017

Port Report I can sense the envy amongst anglers knowing I am writing this from my boat swinging about on a mooring in Alderney Harbour on this our first Channel Islands trip of 2017. Other Weymouth boats have been here on earlier charters and they have reported plenty of turbot and a few brill although most are small and many are returned. It should be noted that the majority of these fish are over the legal landing size but anglers traditionally fish to higher measurements. Chatting to the skipper of of one of the Guernsey charter boats today, I have learnt that there have been days when good size flatties have come to the net but most sessions have resulted in the bulk of the fish being returned. This is similar to the turbot fishing 'back home' in sunny Weymouth on The Shambles Bank. There have been catches of up to 30 turbot per day but many are tiny and even smaller than the commercial minimum size which is set at just 36cms. However, there have been many more bigger turbot reported than on caught so far on the Channel Island banks. During April there have been at least 20 double figure turbot to 18lb 4oz reported amongst the Weymouth Charter fleet and visiting boats making the two hour trip from Poole.

start to feature during anchoring sessions with tope, conger and huss adding to the rays, pouts, dogs, hounds and gurnards.

Spurdog - Duchess II

The Channel Island trips will become a regular feature with a number of the Weymouth boats crossing on a weekly basis. These trips generally feature wrecking on the way there and back with cod as the main species along with a few pollack. Some groups like to anchor the wrecks for conger. Once at the Islands, usually Alderney, the emphasis is on the flatfish but there is also excellent light tackle pollacking to be enjoyed and good general reefing with bream, undulate rays and eels from the marks east of Sark. Tope fishing close to Alderney used to be a very popular option so if you fancy a bit of that, then get your group organiser to talk to your skipper so he can advise you on what gear to bring.

Paul Walton with his 18 lb thornback - Duchess II

Smoothound - Duchess II

As ever....thank you to everyone for coming to Weymouth. We skippers know what long journeys many of you have to make to reach us and it is all very much appreciated. Good Luck to all of us for May!

Anchoring sessions on the Shambles have also produced a few smoothounds and spurdogs, stacks of dogfish, some very good rays with small-eyed, undulate and blonde rays all featuring and a number of specimen size (above 5lb for this area) brill.

A spotted ray and a selection of turbot recently caught aboard Duchess II

There have been several anchoring sessions on the banks to the west of Portland with very similar results in terms of the species caught although here the rays dominate the catches with the turbot and brill the bonus fish. General reefing, especially to the east of Weymouth, has also resulted in rays along with spurs, smoothounds, pout, dogs and gurnards but the real bonus has been with good catches of early season bream. There are pollack on the wrecks but they are a long way off. The boats are having to travel to midchannel. Unfortunately there are many anglers who do not appreciate the distance the boats myst go to find these fish and patience often wears a but thin as up to 2 hours of steaming is required. It's easy to forget that it wasn't that long ago these mid channel wrecks could only be reached on neap tides and travel time was up to 5 hours so 18 hour trips were required. Today's boats are completely different beasts but this is forgotten in the unending pressure to 'get there quick'. To many anglers the sea is not really something to be enjoyed... it's just something in the way of reaching the fish!

Spurdog - Fish On II

Pollack - Fish On II

Cod - Fish On II

Turbot - Atlanta.

Anyhow, there have been plenty of pollack on the mid-channel wrecks with a lot of double figure fish. We have been fortunate with the weather and this has also allowed sandeels to be trawled as a bonus for the pollack fishing. They can make a significant difference to the catch rate, especially over slack tide, but there are some outstandingly effective lures around now that can hold their own against live eels and indeed sometime out fish them. We have started to find a few mackerel and the first of the cod has shown.

Turbot - Fish On II

ATLANTA

May is when we expect to see the cod arrive on the wrecks and the Pollack will thin out. The first anchoring sessions will take place aimed at ling with the fresh mackerel. Inshore the bream will feature from the marks to the east of Weymouth and east again of St. Alban's Head. The usual variety available from Weymouth will all

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD FINS-UP Well, firstly and most importantly what a fantastic spell of settled weather we have had. Fingers crossed it will continue into the summer! The weather has enabled us to get out on the fish frequently. We have been concentrating more trips inshore on the flatties and reefs. The Shambles Bank has been giving up some great fish. One of the biggest Brill I have ever seen was caught by Rob Symes weighing in at a cracking 11lb 9 oz. A few double figure Turbot were a welcome sight after seeing not much else but pollock whilst fishing offshore over the last few months. Tope, Congers, Spur Dogs have all been landed on the reef and I'm sure it won't be long until we see a

scattering of Black Bream. Offshore wrecks have started to show more and frequent Ling on both lures and baits . The classic rhubarb and custard sandeel always a favourite for the Ling. Pollock are still in fairly good numbers. Some fish starting to look a little skinny though after shooting their roe. Our sponsors Sidewinder have kindly donated a large amount of lures and braided line. If you would like to be in with a chance to win some of this fabulous gear, we will be running competition days wrecking on the lures. Please keep an eye on my FB page, I will be releasing the dates soon.

Sea Angling May, April 2017

SPECIES LEAGUE The 31st of February saw 3 boatful’s of eager anglers heading out of Lyme Regis on the second species hunt of the year. With strong south-westerly winds dictating what grounds could be fished and species targeted, it wasn’t long before fish began to be swung inboards. An abundance of cuckoo wrasse were caught and started to become a nuisance, pouncing on any baits put down before the other species could get into them. Rig changes were a plenty and gradually other species began to show. Huss, Conger, Gurnards, Pollack, Smoothounds, Thornback rays and Ballen wrasse were in the final total of 14 species accounted for. Well done to Steve Batchelor, winner on Alice Rose, Keith Wigglesworth, Luke Allen joint winners on Pegasus and Marcus Wuest winner on Blue Turtle. The 3rd trip of the competition saw 3 more boatfuls heading out of Poole on the 21st April. The boats, Piscary, Rocket and Random Harvest, headed off in different directions, two deciding to remain inshore for the smaller species and one heading offshore for the larger ones. The neap tides didn’t help and some of the inshore marks had to be worked hard but some good wrasse, bream and rays came in off Dancing Ledge. On some marks the pouting proved to be the nuisance fish of the day. At the end of the day 16 species were accounted for. Congratulations to boat winners, Paul Roper, Perry Dack and Billy Short. The next round will be out of Langstone on the 12th of May.

CHESIL BEACH / NEWS

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 25

Chesil Beach Report By Wayne Hand

What a fabulous few week’s we have witnessed along the mighty beach, this settled spell has chucked up a few fish with many anglers back smiling again, myself included. To be fair the Plaice fishing has picked up along Cogden, Bexi and Hive areas respectively, unfortunately the fish that have shown are mainly undersize with numbers being low, not many of you reporting big bags of keepers. It is still early and I am sure they will be nice and fat soon. It has still been fun getting the light kit out and rolling the leads targeting our little spotted friends. It is still early for Sole so not many reported captures yet. I am sure in the next few weeks we can look forward to a few Sole coming out, we can only dream of the numbers and size of Sole this year with 2016 being the best in many years for these crackers. The Chesil flat fish open was won by 2 Sole this month but the conditions were horrendous for Plaice fishing. 161 anglers entering with only 6 fish making the weigh in. The start of the month has seen some cracking Turbot pop up, the first weekend seeing 6 fish up to a remarkable 11lb. The biggest was landed by the Devon angler Andy Webb while doing a Video for his Sea Angling adventures on Facebook & Youtube accounts. Thanks for sending in the cracking photo as you can see across the page. Well done Andy. The Ray fishing has come alive as expected with some

cracking undulate and Specimen small eyed rays being landed in all the normal hotspots, these fish can be landed the full length of the beach with anglers targeting them from Ferrybridge all the way along to Charmouth. Do remember these beautiful creatures feed nice and close, with many fish being landed from 40 to 80 yards along most stretches, So all of us have a chance of picking one up on a nice Sandeel or fish bait like Bluey or Mackerel. Most anglers prefer a standard up and over or a pulley dropper rig for rays. If you put the time in and battle the Dog Fish then you will get one and the chances are along Chesil it will be a specimen. If that isn’t your thing then a few Bream have been showing on the boats, so hopefully we will see the return of the Black Bream this year in big numbers. On a positive note the fish being landed on the boats are of a good stamp. Its also good to see the Hounds showing already, generally they have been small pups up to 4lb but still great fun on your Plaice rigs on light gear.

On Sunday 2nd April Lymington & District Sea fishing Club held a Shallow Boat competition kindly organised by Brian Ansell. The day started off dry and sunny with a strong breeze blowing, but by mid-morning the wind had drop down to just a slight breeze which turned into a comfortable day out on the water. 6 club members signed on and all weighed in fish consisting of dogfish, pout, spotted ray, undulate ray, smothhound and plaice. The heaviest and best specimen fish which was returned to the scales was a plaice of 1lb 11.4oz 37.5% of specimen caught by Derek Smith. Recreational Trip on the 8th of April aboard Wight Osprey from Yarmouth Harbour skippered by Kevin Sampson.

West Bay SAC Here is the press release for this year’s Chesil Champs. The attached pic is the winner Ian Dancey (on the left) receiving the trophy and prize from Tom Marley of the Angling Centre West Bay. Ninety one anglers signed on for the 45th Chesil Champs hosted by West Bay Sea Angling Club and sponsored by The Angling Centre West Bay on Sunday 9th April 2017. The competition was fished between Burton Bradstock in the west to Dragon’s Teeth, Abbotsbury to the east & once again we included the East pier at West Bay to accommodate those less able to fish the beaches. The competitors enjoyed a wonderful day weather wise, with those not catching fish at least catching the sun. After six hours of fishing twenty two anglers had managed to catch weighable fish, species caught were; plaice, dogfish, gurnard, scad, rockling & smoothound. Total weight of fish caught was 45 kg 623 g Ian Dancey from Waterloovile top with nine dogfish for a total of 6kg 70g; runner up was Rory Eastlake with 5 kg 744 g and third was Rob Marshall three dogfish & four plaice. Top lady on the day was Joan Johns, she caught a scad of 362 g. As no junior managed to catch weighable fish it was decided to draw the winner out of the hat and the lucky junior was Matthew Taylor. Ian, Rory & Rob won their share of a very healthy £375 super pool in addition to the top prize of £250 for the winner, £150 for second and £100 for third. Cash prizes were awarded down to eighth position, there was also a healthy prize table for the top ten anglers & top lady to pick from, a big thank you to all those that donated prizes to the event The flatfish pool was won by Rob Marshall with a plaice of 1 kg 673g and the round fish pool was won by Saul Page with a smoothhound of 1 kg 701 g. All those that came back to the presentation and did not manage to weigh fish in were entered into the no fish draw.

Seven L.D.S.F.C. members met at Bath Road car park on a gorgeous spring morning all with a good feeling for the day ahead. After paying our dues for the trip to Mr Lane we boarded Kevin’s boat and stowed our kit. Within what seemed like moments we were out of Lymington River and heading for our mark to fish for plaice. Once the anchor was down and secure, Kevin told us we could start fishing as we only had about an hour of the flood tide left. Within ten minutes Brian Rose was into the first plaice of the day. Other members soon followed with Harry Gray also getting a double hook up of plaice which put a beaming smile on his face. Most of the fish were caught in the last hour of the flood tide and then it all went rather quiet. When the boat swung round and the ebb tide started to run several more plaice came aboard with a nice earley season black bream for Karl Bates. It wasn’t Daniel Rose’s day as he caught a smoothhound and a dogfish instead of plaice even though he tried hard all day with the same technique as the rest of us. We had all caught fish by this time but hoped for another mad spell as the tide started to turn for the Flood but it was not to be. The afternoon wore on and the beautiful spring sun shone down. Along with the clear blue sky it was one of the few perfect boat fishing days of the year. All too soon the time had run out for our day’s plaice fishing. “Times up” said the skipper as he started the boats engine to warm it up. We all stowed our gear again and returned to Lymington pontoon happy with our day but wanting more. As the old saying goes “There’s never enough hours in the day”. Leeda Fishing and W.A.C Flatfish Open LDSFC the Leeda Fishing and Weymouth Angling Centre Flatfish Open held on Sunday 2nd April between Abbotsbury and Hive beach. The conditions were good, calm seas, with a light NE wind, and plenty of sun, unfortunately some wind a few days before hand had coloured the water quite bad, not the best for flatfish. It was a very good turn out considering the conditions, total of 161 anglers, which included 3 juniors, 4 ladies and 15 OAP's. Bob Smith (Poole) walked away with first prize of £500 for 2 x Sole at 60cm (Longest Aggregate length), while Gary Bowler (Portland) won £250 for his 1 x Plaice at 45cm (Longest Individual fish), and in the pairs event Bob Smith and Andy Mills won £150.

Bait Supplied Boat Match League 2017- Competition 1/6: Lymington. Ten members fished the first match of the 2017 bait-supplied boat match series aboard ‹Voyager› skippered by Kevin Duell on the 9th of April 2017. The League, now in its fourth year, is kindly sponsored by Loni›s Angling Centre. Anglers fishing the League are restricted to using the bait packs provided by Lonis, consisting of 1/2lb of ragworm, 1lb of squid and two mackerel. Any fish caught during the match may also be retained as bait. Expectations for the match were high with the fishing season ahead of schedule given the prolonged fine weather during April, and the fishing didn›t disappoint with the variety of species that were caught. The match started by fishing a rock mark on Christchurch Ledge at anchor, and within moments of the start anglers were soon bringing in a number of species including corkwing, goldsinney and baillon›s wrasse, blennies, pout and numerous good sized pollack. Several splendid exotic coloured ballan wrasse were also caught and provided excellent sport. With the scores relatively even, a few drifts were made across the end of the ledge to try for pollock; however, bites were very hard to find and eventually the move was made to a mark on the Shingles for rays and other larger species. This proved a good move as several of the anglers managed the target species, catching spotted rays (the largest weighing 3lb 8oz by Ed Taylor), smoothound and whiting, as well as several good sized- lobsters, which unfortunately didn›t count in the match but were a pleasure to see in such numbers.

LDSFC RESULTS OF LARGE BOAT COMPETITION 16 APRIL 2017 Easter Sunday marked the first large boat competition of the year for Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club and ten members headed for Christchurch Ledge in the Spring sunshine aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage. Several drifts over the Ledge produced plump pollack for everyone, before anchoring up. The main target was bream, which accordingly obliged, particularly for the anglers fishing towards the stern of the boat; indeed this catching pattern was to persist throughout the rest of the day with the remaining anglers finding it hard to attract bites. Towards slack water a move was made eastwards, but unfortunately the ebb tide combined with a Force 5 westerly made for a cold and uncomfortable afternoon’s session with bites proving few and far between. Species caught during the day included undulate ray, dogfish, conger, black bream, plaice, pollack and smoothhound. 1st Jane Hopkins 107 points; 2nd Derek Smith 92 points; 3rd Robin Lane 80 points; 4th Brian Dawkins 68 points; 5th Malcolm Gerrish 62 points; 6th Alec Harmer 54 points; 7th Arran Harmer 47 points; 8th Roland Blomfield 45 points; 9th Pete Drodge 39 points; 10th Harry Gray 29 points.

Derek Smith with black bream of 2lb plus

Brian Dawkins with a double figure undulate ray.

One further move was made on the shingles into shallower water with plaice being the target species and although the fishing had begun to slow at this point Robin Lane gave inspiration to all by catching a cracking 3lb 8oz plaice followed by a good sized smoothound, drastically increasing his score. Unfortunately this was only good enough to earn him fourth place, with first place going to Ed Taylor, who had managed to catch good numbers of fish consisting of 10 species overall. Results: 1. There was also a good showing of eels and a single dogfish, landed by double world champion, Alan Price. Flounders, however, were almost absent. A solitary specimen of 31 cms gave the flatfish pool to Carl Edwards. Winner of this first round was the Mersey Maestro, John Waugh. His eleven fish bag included seven good sized codling for a measure and release total of 437 cms. Results: 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 437 cms. 2. Mike Flanagan (Wallasey), 359. 3.
