ENGLAND TRIUMPH AT HOME NATIONS BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS

England home nations boat team Scotland hosted the SALC Home Nations Boat Championship this year and held it out of Scrabster in the far North of the country. Scrabster was chosen as it is a regular venue on the Scottish circuit and offered excellent hard ground fishing for Cod, Ling & Pollock, a staple of the Scottish match circuit. Therefore anglers for all teams came armed with trays of pirks and artificials in every shape, size and colour imaginable. However the weather on the week proved both unpredictable and highly changeable and the normal grounds around Dunnet Head were out of bounds. Therefore all the teams spent the week practicing on mainly soft ground marks around Dunnet Bay and to the west of Holborn head. Throughout the week the teams had excellent numbers of Cod and Haddock interspersed with Whiting , Gurnard, Dabs and a variety of other species. This led to a strategy across all teams to utilise the very abundant fresh mackerel as bait on scratching 3 hook paternosters or similar. It was clear however that due to the wind and tides that heavy leads were required for drifting across these grounds and apart from the Scottish team, most anglers were scouring around for 1-2lb leads for the competition. Come the competition the lead skipper drew a line from Holborn Head to Dunnet Head to fish with in, mainly over soft broken ground, due to the expected bad weather and tides. Normally in a Scottish competition context we wouldn’t have bothered, as the fishing wouldn’t be as good as the standard rough ground marks. However come day one this theory was thoroughly disproven. The Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh teams were split across 3 boats which all fished different areas of the bay but all with great success. The boats all filled up on excellent numbers of cod, and haddock as well as the other usual species. It was the English who proved they had spent their practice days well and took advantage of the conditions, with 2 anglers getting 100% and the other 3 all scoring above 90% to take a 40% lead over Scotland with Ireland 3rd and Wales 4th. The peculiar mention for the day would go to Ally Campbell (Scotland) and Steve Batchelor (England) who managed to catch 88 and 90 fish respectively and exactly tie on points to take 100% each on the same boat. An excellent days fishing overall for all anglers with 80-120 quality fish per angler.

ENGLAND TRIUMPH AT HOME NATIONS BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS Going into Day 2 it was still all to play for. Fishing was to be the same as the day before, just with a fair swell from a brisk northerly rising through the day. The catches matched Day 1 for number s and quality but it was England who maintained their strong Day 1 performance to retain their lead. Scotland gained 3% on England but couldn’t catch them, whilst Ireland had a much improved 2nd day and improved by almost 50% on Day 2 but remained in 3rd with Wales staying in 4th place. There followed an excellent evenings socialising where the other three Nations congratulated England for the 2nd year in a row on their victory. A very well deserved victory, especially considering they had no

previous experience on the venue. I would imagine all the anglers would suggest they were a bit tired by the end of the event as hauling up 80-120 fish a day with up to 2lb of lead on the drift whilst getting bounced off the gunnels does require a fair bit of energy but it did make the drinks that bit more refreshing in the end. Scotland would like to thank everyone who helped to run the event but specifically; the organising Committee from the SFSA- (Ally Campbell, Scott Gibson, Daz Rose and Ian Napier), our SkippersChris Bennett, Brian Farmer & Roy Anderson who put us over the fish all week. Ammo- who supplied the bait. The Weigh Inn & Pentland Hotels who housed and fed the anglers to their satisfaction.

Finally thanks to all all the teams who travelled and made it a thoroughly enjoyable and competitive championships. Ireland will host the event in Cork next year and I am sure everyone is looking forward to it. England team manager Steve Batchelor was full of praise for the competition organisers, saying; "The event was very well organised by the host Nation Scotland and their organising team. They, the boat skippers, stewards and supporters must all be congratulated on a very successful event. I'd also like to thank the England team sponsors especially Tubertini for their help and support".

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Autumn is nearly upon us after a fantastic summer it all seems to go by in a blur, the first fish of autumn have turned up whiting reliable as ever, and I can remember as a kid how exciting it was this simple fish that gave us so much pleasure, fishing with paternosters on a hand line, now they are almost thrown back with distain it’s all about bigger fish, but I say enjoy what’s there, filleted correctly with a nice bit of batter delicious. Cod should follow and we are getting reports of several codling being caught on the piers and coming to shore anglers manly night fishing so fingers crossed for a better cod run than last year. Rays are still being caught in good numbers on most marks inshore and offshore, dabs will also start to shoal up in the estuary’s but you need to scale down your tackle to catch them, I often get asked by anglers on my boat if there are any flatties about well actually the Thames estuary has one of the biggest concentrations of a very sort after flat fish the dover sole, but you aren’t goner catch them on whole squid or a chunk of herring on a 3.0 hook. We had an angler on the boat who took my advice he had a light rod with a

long trace and small hook with a worm bait what was his first fish yup a nice dover sole and you can catch many more of this fish if you fish for them correctly. The dreaded dog fish have also made an appearance this fish can be a bit of a pest but it’s often a beginners first sea fish and he is smiling from ear to ear, bass have started to move off now but still catching a few inshore and some anglers still like to target them offshore were they start to shoal up and move south but you have to put your hand in your pocket and expect to pay a bit more to target them charter boats don’t run on fresh air. Still a few hounds coming to the net but these great fish are also moving south now to warmer waters but we have had a great season catching them. So summing up we are all waiting baited breath will they or wont they, a rumour hear a rumour there cod that is, but if they don’t turn up there is still plenty of fish to catch and tackle shops need your business and so do charter boats, we will do our best for our anglers as we always do and hey it’s a great day out with a few friends and a good laugh in the beautiful Thames estuary and if you don’t go you wont know.

and out winter pollock also showing in the deeper water, with plenty of good eels and ling still. For you big game sportsmen don't forget about our sharking as we have seen an amazing amount of sharks this year and I'm sure it will continue and only get better so any one interested you need to get in quick as the response for sharking is amazing. You might just be lucky enough to glimpse of the King of the seas (Bluefin tuna) when sharking, a truly beautiful sight..

Recreational boat trip 26th August. On Saturday 26th August a recreational trip was organised with Kevin Sampson on “Wight Osprey”. Unfortunately Kevin has now retired so we rebooked with Ben Matthews in his boat “Rebecca May”. Nine club members boarded at Lymington and headed for the Needles to find mackerel before going to Atherfield Bay looking for bass. Conditions were ideal – no wind and calm waters, but unfortunately

only a few pout and a bull huss were caught. We then went back to Freshwater Bay and all decided to fish with big baits. Soon Roy Epton had a bite and eventually brought in a small eyed ray. However in the meantime Anton Emblen brought in an amazing turbot weighing 20lbs. The skipper kindly supplied us with tea, coffee, bacon rolls and hotdogs to complete an enjoyable day.

So don't forget Brixham is the true home of big'uns and whoppers. Just call Kev 07964 053347 after 6pm to 10pm 7 day a week or call big Paul on Off The Hook charters on 07815 867805.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

There is only one place to start this month and that is the capture of that massive shore-caught Pollack of 12-6 by Mark Hayman of Rodbenders SAC during the most recent round of the Plymouth Shore League. Fishing a rock mark not far from Plymouth Mark set out after eels by fishing a large fillet of mackerel on the bottom but instead snared a massive Pollack which is a new PB and Rodbenders club record. The capture of such fish really sums up the beauty of our sport in expect the unexpected and you never know what is swimming past your bait. Well done Mark, stunning fish bud. During the same shore league weekend, smoothhound magnet Scott Clark also of Rodbenders SAC made a trip up to the Bristol Channel and found another cracking smut of 15-11. Well done mate, you’ve had a cracking year on the hounds. Many Plymouth anglers continue to make the journey up to Chesil Beach although as always with the ‘Big Beach’ its’ a case of feast or famine. Castaways SAC members Dave Downs and Gav Cuthbertson have certainly been on the fish during the past few weeks up there, with Dave landing a cracking black bream of 2-14 and Gav a stunning Undulate of 13lb. Nice fishing lads. With the autumn equinox upon us today, attention has now firmly switched to the hoped for arrival of the

winter species of Cod and Flounder. Whilst I haven’t heard of any codling showing from the Tamar as yet I am hopeful that I may have something to report next month, likewise with the flounders. Best bet for an early flounder is usually on the River Fowey (subject to not getting too much rain) or on the River Teign. Crab is king on both of these rivers and with the temperatures dropping off crab supplies should start to become more plentiful around Plymouth. Whilst on the subject of Flounder, the dates for this years’ Teignmouth Flounder Comp are Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November. The tides are cracking this year so get your names down (most tackle shops have the application forms). As well as the usual £1000 first prize, the day prizes for the top fish on both the Saturday and Sunday will be a brand new Zziplex Primo Synchro rod. Well worth winning. On Size Matters Kev tells me that a recent wreck trip for congers produced 109 congers to a top weight of 65lb along with Ling to 28lb and Cod to 16lb. So far on the sharks the best day resulted in 23 being landed and returned, the best of which was 98lb. Float fishing baits in the chum slick also produced some big garfish to over 2lb in weight.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand A welcome return to the Dorset coastline. What a fabulous month it’s been along the big shingle beach for lots of anglers. The mighty Chesil is commonly known as the beach of broken dreams, that’s generally because maybe 400 anglers can been seen along the more famous marks with so few landing fish, but this month has seen a big percentage walk away with a big smile on their face! The key to Chesil is to get to know your marks, most people just see reports on social media etc and just expect that you can just rock up and catch double figured fish every cast. With the way social media is these days please spend time learning the mark you would like to fish, it’s a 18 mile stretch of shingle with shallow and very deep areas, which hold different species at different times of tides, weather and time of the year. There is some very good tackle shops that run the full length, they very much will be able to help you out on catch reports & venues. So what has been landed. This year has seen the welcome return of the beautiful Trigger fish, these fish can be located generally along the Ferrybridge end of the beach. This year has seen them being landed along Abbotsbury and beyond. The best way to target these lovely fish is to use Rag

tipped with Squid on a very strong 1/0 hook, these fish have very sharp teeth and have been known to bite straight through your hooks and definitely use a strong hook lengths for the same reason. The Black Bream have been around in force again this year around the Ferrybridge areas, they seemed to be put off by the numbers of triggers but as they have passed we have seen good numbers again. Very similar to the Triggers, the best way of catching these Bream is with Rag & Squid with a small number of bright beads on the hook length. Chesil is most famous for its Cod fishing which has come alive in the last few weeks, after a big south westerly storm you can see many anglers targeting Cod all along the big beach, most anglers prefer fresh black lug & crab baits, the standard pulley pennel with a nice set of 5/0s can be seen to be doing the trick on these gutsy creatures.

Early Chesil Codling I landed at Abbotsbury after this months Blow

The Plaice & Sole fishing will slow down but don’t be fooled, if you do manage to get one then the chances are it will be a specimen. Now is the best time of year on Chesil so if you feel like getting the rods out then now is the time.

Sea Angling News, October 2017

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins As the early morning temperatures start to drop the good inshore fishing continues with plenty of Rays, Tope and Congers being landed off the Swanage and Durlston marks, further off to sea the wrecks are producing some big Bream and lots more Congers whilst at anchor but drifting them remains poor. The main focus has been searching for those illusive Trigger Fish as they are only here for a very short time and their sporting qualities are 2nd to none size for size. Having had some success with them this year the Marden Edwards SAC wanted to fish for them and had a ‘red letter’ day with Chris Colledge landing a double shot (new record for the boat) and another 9 for the team setting several new PBs. Not to be outdone on the following day the Christchurch AC boys landed 7 with Julian getting the 2nd double

shot of Triggers and lots of Plaice up to 3lb to cap off a couple of excellent days. Rays continue to be caught everywhere including close to the Piers where K Trim landed a 10lb Undulate whilst Plaice fishing. Drift fishing along the beaches is producing plenty of Plaice, Bream, Gurnards, small Turbot and a few Sole appearing as darkness falls. Poole Harbour and the approaches are still producing some fine catches of Plaice and will throw up small Codling over the next few weeks and a few more Giltheads. The 1st of the Sole have been caught on middle sands at dusk. Poole Sea Angling Centre are running 2 x Winter Cod comps on 19th November 2017 and 17th December 2017 for more details please contact Andy on 01202676597.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

The Headline trip for the last month only just squeezed into this report as it happened just two days ago. Our planned trip to target ling and black bream was met with perfect conditions for a change. With so many of the small neap tides getting blown off by high winds this year I have to admit I was sceptical at times leading up to it. Happy to be proved wrong on this occasion we headed over the horizon and after a cup tea and a few drifts the tide was right to chuck the anchor in and get down to the serious stuff. First up were the ling taking mackerel flappers and heavy hok-eye rigs baited with squid. A frantic hour saw plenty of ling mixed in with congers come to the boat until the tide started to cut away and they went off the feed, as was expected. After our success with the big gear people were reluctant to switch over to the lighter stuff, Mickey Claire from coventry landing our first bream of the day at 5lb 12oz soon speeded up the transition however. Bob Summers followed that up with a cracking PB of 5lb before a few more congers and even a couple of cod on the lighter gear. We saved the best for last though as Mickey Claire made it quite an incredible brace when he wrestled another black

Andy Cumming PB red mullet Silver Spray II

bream to the boat just before slack. This time around it weighed in at 6lb 8oz, just shy of the british record and certainly a new boat record for us at Silver Spray. Talk about a red letter day, what a monster fish, well done Mickey that’s going to be a tough one to beat. The bass fishing of late definitely deserves a mention. The usual lures and live baits working well, it’s been nice to see so many fish coming up around the slack water on cut baits. Kev Lee topping the charts this month with a fine fish of 9lb 8oz on mackerel strip. Further inshore the plaice fishing in Poole Bay has been brilliant, not just the numbers of fish showing up but also some real whoppers. Frazer Jones landed one of 4lb 8oz after over 2 years without a fishing trip to his name. And to round off a brilliant months fishing we managed to land a porbeagle shark on our first try of the year. Caught by Casey Alcock on his birthday the fish took one and a half hours to bring to the boat and was estimated to be 150-180lb, a truly magnificent creature. We are coming up to our last trip over to Alderney this year, looking forward to next year the dates are starting to fill up already so get in touch if you are interested in a list of dates.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club The Langstone Harbour area boat fishing report covering the eastern Solent has returned thanks to information provided by local anglers and clubs. This area is a very popular boat fishing venue with a good charter fleet and a large number of local private boats, plus regular visitors with trailerable boats. August is often a quiet month for fishing, and over the past few summers the mackerel – always welcome for bait and the barbeque – have been patchy. After a late start this year the mackerel and scad have arrived in good numbers so we now have freezers stocked with winter bait. We have noticed fewer smoothhound caught than previous years. This may be due to increased commercial fishing as apparently smoothhound are now a more marketable catch. August this year has been bigger in variety than in size or numbers in the bags. Anglers have been catching the usual summer species of bass, rays, pack tope, conger, plaice, smoothhound and dogfish, plus turbot, brill, gurnard, bull huss, weever and trigger fish. In the last few days of August, the first cod were reported and by the second week of September they

have been turning up regularly. One charter boat is reported to have boated five to 12lb in the Solent. Southsea Marina Angling Club has an active membership of 87 across 32 boats in the marina. Specimen fish caught so far this year include Neil Glazier - undulate ray 15lb (catch and release, c/r); Jocky Park thornback ray 15lb c/r; Heber Crawford undulate ray 22lb 4oz c/r; Tim Andrews Pollack 16lb 3oz; Jake Kelly (junior) undulate ray 14lb c/r; Tony Harris bass 11lb. There is also an annual species competition and this is currently led by Heber Crawford with a spectacular 51 species, which indicates the sheer variety of fish in this area. We are looking forward to the Inter-cub competition between Southsea Marina Angling Club, Eastney Cruising Association, Langstone Harbour Fishermen’s Association and Southsea Sea Angling Club which will be held on the first Sunday in October, if the weather is kind. There will also be an open cod competition in December. For details contact Steve Kelly at Southsea Marina.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, October 2017

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Kevin Hainsworth, Rich Mullans and Rich Drays had an exciting day on Ilfracombe based Charter Boat ‘Reel Deal’ they decided that they were all going to have a go at enticing the porbeagle they hooked to the boat in a team effort. The porbeagle was caught on Veals Mail order terminal tackle and reels on a 10/0 circle hook. The fish measured 70 inches by 38inches girth and weighed 127lb she fell to a blast frozen Ammo mackerel. Tope have given exciting sport off the coast with several fish landed of over 40lb. Top tope was a new Appledore Shipbuilders Boat record weighing 52lb to the rod of Jack Pike. Several large Pollock were landed from Private Boats fishing off the coast with Keith Bullard landing a double figure specimen and James Gubb-Fradgley a fine 12lb specimen caught using a light-spinning rod. Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs 2017 Fun Fishing Event on Ilfracombe Pier brought plenty of smiles as young anglers and families shared in the pleasure of fishing. Eighteen anglers signed up for the event and plenty of passers by mingled with the participants to gaze in fascination at the array of species caught. Special guests for the day included Mat Mander from Devon and Severn IFCA and the Marine Coastguard. The coastguard chatted with members of the public explaining their crucial role in coordinating rescues along the coast where they liaise with the other emergency services to save lives. Mat mingled with local anglers discussing fish legislation and conservation. The top three prizes were for under 16’s only and the winner was for the second year young Charlie Stanway who amassed an impressive 18 points. Runner up was Solly Welch with 17 points and third Jack Phillips with 16 points. Ross Stanway landed the longest fish a garfish of 20”. Jack Phillips caught the heaviest a ballan wrasse of 9oz.Everyone who caught a fish took home a prize with a splendid selection of quality tackle provided by sponsor High Street Tackle, Ilfra-

combe. Several other prizes were provided by IFCA and one by North Devon Angling News. CMSAC’s two month long species competition ended with two anglers way out ahead of the field with John Shapland registering an amazing 43 species and Dan Welch 41. To catch such an array of fish over two months is an achievement to be proud of, both anglers received quality prizes from High Street Tackle. In third place was Ross Stanway with 25 species and in forth Lee Holden on 21. Bass have provided good sport for both lure and bait anglers from both rock and estuary marks. Double figure fish have been scarce but the next month should see a few fish breaking through this barrier. Grey mullet are starting to feed well as autumn descends and specimen thick-lipped mullet are likely to be landed from both rock marks and harbours. Several small-eyed ray have been tempted by angers fishing from local beaches in search of bass. There is every chance of tope from deep water venues right through until late autumn with flounder considered the top bait.

Kevin Pike - tope 45lb 8oz caught from his own boat

James Gubb Fradgley - pollack 12lb

John Shapland with a dragonet

Jack Pike won Appledore Shipbuilders bass competition with fine bass scaling 8lb 3oz. In runner up spot was Cameron Atkinson with a bass of 6lb 141/2oz and third Paul Downing with a bass of 3lb 6oz. A fine specimen grey mullet scaling 5lb 1oz took top spot in Combe Martin SAC’s and Lynton C of E Primary School PTFA Open Fishing Competition. The event fished between Minehead Harbour and Clovelly Harbour resulted in success for several anglers who landed a variety of specimens from both boat and shore over the two days. The event and the raffle held at The Rising Sun, Lynmouth raised over £120 for Lynton Primary School Funds. The competition received generous sponsorship from Sakuma Tackle. Ross Stanway took runner up spot with a smoothound of 11lb 2oz and James Gubb-Fradgley third with a bat caught conger of 32lb 4oz.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby

Smouthound numbers are starting to dwindle but are still featuring regularly in catches, hopefully they will hang around for a few more weeks. Bass still around on the banks locally along with the usual suspects. With the nights drawing in and temperatures starting to drop thoughts are moving towards cod and whiting. Last winter produced a few nice doubles but very few codling but we had our best whiting fishing for some time. August ended with a fantastic bank holiday weekend with light winds giving us all a chance to get afloat. With such a good forecast a last minute junior comp was arranged for the Sunday (thanks Mark and Kelly Bowden) and 6 juniors made it out on 4 boats. Fished for 5 hours over high water as a species hunt sport was great and all recorded fish. Between them 6 different species of fish were caught with Ava Saxby sneaking first place with 5 species including her first bass at 5lb 6oz. Leah Bowden, Charlie Willis and Jack Saxby tied in second with 4 species. Jack Saxby also had a hound of 16lb 2oz. The 16th and 17th September was meant to be a 33 hour species hunt but due to a poor forecast for the Sunday was reduced to a 12 hour comp on the Saturday. Four boats with 10 anglers ventured out

with most steaming down to Porlock to find some clearer water. Fishing seemed better on the ebb than it was on the flood with a total of 10 species landed between us. Stephen Saxby and Nigel Devey tied for 1st with 7 species each and another tie for 3rd with Andy Georgiou and Fred Saxby on 6 species. We also fished the Fred Peters trophy for best specimen and Andy Georgiou weighed in the only fish to take 1st spot with a fine Huss of 12lb and 96% which was also a new club record. Since Ultra Fishers relaunch Simon Stroud has been making up for lost time (about 15 years!!) and has been out most weekends getting stuck into the hounds before they disappear. Fish of the month for August was won by Craig Willis with a superb hound of 22lb 2oz and 143% The next club competition is the Tony Holly Trophy on Sunday 15th October. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 19th October at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

Weymouth Angling Festival – Jack Reynolds Elite sea angler Jack Reynolds of Worlebury travelled down to Weymouth to take part in the Weymouth Angling Society and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Sea Angling Festivals 2017. The event held over two days attracted anglers from across the country. The 11-year-old had two very good days of fishing on board the fishing boat 'Fish On 2' owned by Josh Simmonds of Weymouth. Anglers in the boat festivals competed for a variety of trophies and prizes in both the large and small boat categories – with the winners determined on a catch and release points based system with only specimen fish brought back to the scales. Jack was using a Shimano rod with a mackerel and squid bait when he caught the best specimen of the day in both the adult and junior sections of the competition. His bull huss, weighing in at 5.81kgs was good enough to win him the Avery Boyce Memorial

Mayor with Jack Reynolds.

LDSFC Derek Smith has a very good win. On Sunday 17th September Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shallow Boat competition. The weather was dry and cloudy with a slight breeze. 8 anglers signed on and all 8 weighed in fish consisting of dogfish, pouting, undulate ray, spotted ray, small eyed ray, blonde ray, bull huss, black bream, bass, wrasse and plaice. 46 fish were caught for a total weight of 89lbs 10.8oz. Best specimen fish was a ballan wrasse of 2lb 5.6oz which was 47.5% of specimen weight caught by Alan Martin. Heaviest fish was a bull huss weighing 2lb 11.2oz caught by Derek Smith. Derek also caught a nice bass weighing 6lb 6.4oz. Results: 1st Derek Smith. 19lbs 10oz. 2nd Phil Morgan. 14lbs 4oz.

Trophy and the Juniors Annual Festival Cup. Quite an achievement considering the adult anglers that he was up against. He is a Year 7 pupil at Worle Community School in Weston-super-Mare and a member of Bristol Channel Fishing – Supporting Angling Communities, where he takes part in match fishing. Jack is sponsored by both Veals Fishing Tackle, Bristol and Baytree Road Garage, Weston-super-Mare. Also fishing in the competition was Jack's father, Richard Reynolds, although out-fished by his son, he also came away with a cup. He was awarded the Marlboro Cup for the best conger eel. Also fishing on the boat was Jack's grandfather Geoff Reynolds who on this occasion was out of the prizes. Following the competition cups and prizes were presented by the Mayor of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, Councillor Kevin Brookes.

Sea Angling News, October 2017

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Minehead Charter boats returning stunning results this month with general fishing superb from most recognised marks. The rays and in particular, the blondes have been superb. Fish to well over twenty pounds have been taken with double figure specimens almost commonplace. Small-eyeds also plentiful with some trips producing over thirty fish to double figures. Inshore grounds beyond Porlock to the west still showing a few bream, pollack and wrasse though this type of fishing will soon give way as anglers concentrate their efforts on the early season cod run. A few cod already showing though it's still early to take them

seriously. One or two bass are there but as usual, they can be finicky at best. With the ' one fish ' limit in force it makes me wonder why some vessels are drifting the grounds for long periods, maybe its a catch and release thing eh! Offshore grounds still showing a few tope and plenty of good sized huss along with consistent numbers of smoothies. The smoothounds again have been brilliant this year with good sized fish turning up all over the channel. Of course, over the next few weeks, all eyes will be on the cod migration, will they arrive in numbers or not? We'll have to wait and see.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle Firstly, apologies for the lack of a report in the last two issues. For one thing or another I couldn't get things together in time for both print dead lines. Unfortunately there were some great catches reported that didn't get the recognition they deserved in the SAN pages. So apologies to those that made me aware of your catches. Anyway back to what's been going on the past few weeks. The bass fishing has been pretty consistent on bigger tides from a variety of shore marks throughout the channel. Worm baits have been accounting for many and a big mackerel bait has tempted a few better specimens nearing double figures. The ray fishing has been steady with a good amount of small eyed rays showing around Minehead and the odd spotted and blonde amongst them. From Watchet right up into the upper reaches of the Bristol Channel the thornback ray fishing has been very good with good bags of up to 10 rays reported. After a pretty good smoothound season we are still seeing the odd one or two good doubles randomly showing and it's possible we may see the odd straggler appearing into October to those targeting the bass and codling. Talking of codling. It's been a bit of a slow start so far. Late August through September we normally experience a tidy run of codling from Minehead right up to beyond the Severn bridges. So far it would seem the Porlock, Minehead and Dunster areas are the most consistent with catches of a few 1-2lb codling showing in mixed bags. Maybe if anglers were going out armed with a pound of lug specifically

targeting them along the Minehead golf links through to Dunster beach on medium to large tides, we might see a few more being reported. The seasons seemed to have been mixed up this year so a late starting codling season isn't really surprising. Let's just hope it's a late start and not a non starter. But for now there are 1-2lb codling about to be caught. Personally, I can't wait for the clocks to go back bringing early dark evenings and the better stamp of cod to give that chance of a fat double figure bucket mouth. Recently there have been reports of masses of whiting in the channel. Many small pins from 15cm -25cm but reports of 1-2lb whiting have been caught around Blue Anchor and Watchet. If conger fishing is something you enjoy then you need to get out now and get stuck into them as there are loads about, from small straps from a couple of lb to chunky snakes topping 20lb plus. The Blue Anchor area seems to be crawling with them, but expect to find one anywhere from Porlock to Portishead. Many anglers have been having a small hooked whiting totally nailed by a hungry conger hunting down an easy meal. The Sole fishing prospects give a refreshing alternative from the codling and ray fishing. The upper reaches around Portishead and the Minehead both have really good potential this coming month for a special fish. Small tides, calm sea, worm baits and a dollop of luck is all that's needed, but past experiences prove Sole don't always play the small tide calm sea game. Anyway I hope the month ahead doesn't disappoint and it brings many of you a special fish or two. Tight lines and happy hunting...

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage Over the past few weeks the fishing has improved around the West Wight area with Mackerel and Scad being plentiful, which has a big impact on the increase in fish catch. We haven't been to sea as often as we would like due to poor weather but there is a noticeable change in the number of fish being caught. Bass have made a good show over the usual marks with live baits being very successful, however there has been days when artificial baits have out fished the live baits which gives some comfort when the live bait is in short supply. As the wrecks have not been producing we have concentrated on the off shore banks which were worth the miles with over twenty plus Blond Ray on one trip (all returned) Bull Huss Turbot and Tope up to forty pounds. Inshore the banks are producing a late run of Plaice with a few Dabs to make up the bag Most of the inshore Tope have moved off but the Smooth hound are still there and some good sport to be had. We saw our first Cod of the winter season last week in Fresh Water bay, only ten pound but its a good start and very welcome.

NEWS / WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, October 2017

Port Report This is a definitely a year many of us will be glad to see the back off. Windy conditions, rough seas, rain and fish often very hard to find have made this what I would describe as a testing season indeed. The lack of fish on many of the more ‘usual’ and dependable marks have meant skippers have needed to dig deep into their memories and help each other with ideas. If anything, we have gone back to marks used 30 or even 40 years ago and they have come to our rescue. The best of the fishing has definitely been inshore and thankfully there have been a wide range of species available with anchoring often the best technique. Fishing at anchor is an art many anglers have forsaken in favour of drift fishing and the pleasures of never really knowing what you are going to catch has often been lost. My own past two days of chartering have each produced 15 different species of fish and this is without actively seeking them out. I imagine this will be a similar number for all the Weymouth fleet scattered over the various marks with thornbacks, spotted, undulate and blonde rays regularly making up four of the species along with bream, huss, conger, tope, smoothound, gurnards, pouts and dogs along with some very good catches of bream with specimens in the 5lb range. The fishing is not just done at anchor as the turbot and brill as well as the bream are often best fished on the drift. The options have to be kept open and anglers need to consider bringing along two sets of tackle with the heaviewr set able to cope with some anchor work for the bigger fish and being able to handle lead up to 1lb 8oz….even 2lb sometimes! It’s been a long time since I have carried a selection of bigger leads onboard as many anglers now just do not have them and a trip to the tackle shop in search of a large weight is a scary business with the high cost of them. In ‘the good old days’ most anglers made their own leads but for a multitude of reasons that does not happen so much now. With leads costing £5 each, a return to the garden shed and the melting pot might have to be considered! Apart from conger, the offshore wrecks are seriously quiet. Despite this we skippers do occasionally have to take a group of ardent wreckers to sea despite our best efforts to convince people to stay inshore. It’s really disheartening to steam miles and blow away a load of fuel knowing that the trip is destined for disappointment. There’s no way a skipper will tell you to avoid wrecking unless he knows it is in your interest but sadly that can mean losing work as there are groups who simple refuse to fish inshore. Our trips to Alderney have produced very little on the offshore marks. Once again the best of the fishing is close inshore with the bream around Alderney being as important to us as they are along our own inshore marks. Bassing did show a hint of promise on the last Channel Island trips but then we’ve been weathered off so there’s no knowing how it has developed. There have been a couple of reasonable bass catches made from the Portland Bill area and the occasional bass has turned up on long drifts over The Shambles but as yet there is no consistency to the fishing. We would hope this will improve in October and especially in November. Early next month the popular WIBAC (Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition) takes place. I do believe it will be a success in terms of fish caught. There are anglers of outstanding ability taking place. Several of the local charter boats have seen some of our finest anglers turning up on Individual Days and the difference in the catch rate is phenomenal. It is not uncommon for one very good angler who knows

exactly what he is doing to catch more bream, for example, than the rest of the boat put together. This is not to say that the rest of the anglers aree not good in themselves but there seems a quantum leap between what many are happy to settle for and the dedicated match angler can catch. I watch these men in action of the boat and I see them trying to help others…and often that assistance is rebuffed. We Brits are often a funny lot and don’t seem to want to learn or improve from others who are really extremely talented.

Duchess II had their annual Bream comp on recently and boy did they catch Bream with over 40 on board up to just under 5lb Rob Sands won with a bream just under 5lb second was Geoff Dyke with a 4lb 10ozs Leah Harris had one 4lb 8 ozs and Paul Gale was fourth with one just 4lb so was very close comp Leah Harris had cracking 16lb Undulate on the drift.

Much of this difference in catch rate is down to preparation of tackle so that everything is in order and to hand. And then the rigs themselves are immaculately and thoughtfully presented with the one over=ridding criteria constantly applying….that of the need for simplicity. The more complicated the rig, the more of a mess it gets itself into and the less effectively it works. If you get one of these ‘super anglers’ on your boat, try and see what he is doing and learn from him. I guarantee he will be only to happy to assist and advise. Assuming the weather will be kind to us (silly assumption), the WIBAC will target ‘big fish’ and rays on the first two days and there will be plenty of conger, tope and huss plus a variety of rays recorded. These fish are there and really have provided some terrific sport this year along with the tope and hounds. We skippers do feel that there is an air of change about and slowly more anglers are willing to try the bigger fish with ‘sport’ as the priority rather than bags of fish to take home as a justification of the trip. The next three days revolve around species with one day dedicated to the ‘most species’ with competitors targeting just one fish of each and everything released. In order to have a chance of winning this particular day, a competitors must get at least 12 species, preferably 13 with 14 being the magic number that usual ensures a win. This report started off by referring to the past two days on my boat with the group totalling 14 species. That is a very good total….but imagine needing to do that on your own to be in a with a good chance of winning. There has to be an element of luck but all of us can imagine the skill and changing tactics required to work one’s way up to this impressive species total. October is probably regarded as being the very best month for inshore fishing with just about every species Weymouth and Portland has to offer being available. Apart from the many species already mentioned there are also the various wrasses, garfish, scad and mullet available plus a much better chance of bass and a few cod about. (Shore anglers are already reporting cod catches from Chesil). Plaice has not been mentioned but October will see a few being caught, especially during the competitions when they are deliberately targeted in the species events.

We think there’s very little fish about yet take a look in the local fishmongers when the fish for sale are landed. The variety and amount of plaice contradicts the belief that our plaice have ‘gone’. They are certainly about but not concentrated as they used to be on the mussel beds…because the mussel beds still do not exist. If they could re-establish themselves then surely the plaice would move back onto them. Thank you as ever for coming to Weymouth and Portland and supporting the local fleet. You will surely look back upon this year as one in which your skills and patience were tested. When faced with adversity, we anglers have our unending optimism to draw upon and that, along with the amazing tackle available and people around to help us get the best from it will still allow us to catch some nice fish. Let’s hope we do so during October.

PINDER AND BOWELL FIRST PAIR PAST THE POST IN TEAM ENGLAND QUALIFIER The FIPS-M shore pairs team England qualifier took place at Southsea Seafront in Eastney where twelve pairs of the country’s finest shore anglers battled it out for the top three spots and a chance to compete in Spain this coming April. Conditions on the day were favorable with some sunshine and moderate winds leading the pairs to think they were in for a decent day. The fishing at Eastney was carefully selected to mirror that of the match in Spain with the target fish of Bream and Bass of which plenty were caught across the pairs. These weren't the only fish caught though with some pairs totaling 50 fish across 13 species. The match was split into two parts with a morning individual pegs and an afternoon paired pegs. On the individuals in Zone A Saul Page took the honors with 15 fish followed second Mike Groves 11 fish. Local rod Dene Conway took zone B 10 fish (8 Bream) from Ian Bowell 10 fish (fewer bream 7). This meant that after combining individual scores the top three at half way were; 1. Dene Conway and Russell Taylor 2, Mark Pinder and Ian Bowell 3. Richard Yates and Saul Page Going into the afternoon match the conditions were worsening with rougher seas and more weed playing havoc with presentation. A zone was won by Ian Dacey and Martin Reid with 6 fish, followed by Mark

Pinder and Ian Bowell who managed 5 fish in the two and a half hours. B zone was taken by an impressive haul from Dorian Partridge and Paul Grinner with 15 fish, with close runners up Tom Bagnall and Toby Oldfield 12 fish. This meant that it was a very close affair for the three spots to represent England in the world pairs in Penescoala, Spain with 5 pairs all in contention after the second match, with the qualifying pairs as follows; 1. Mark Pinder and Ian Bowell 2nd and 4th = 6 point 2. Callum Graham and Charlie Tudball 3rd and 5th = 8 points 3. Tom Bagnall and Toby Oldfield 5th and 3rd = 8 points With the Reserve pairs for the competition; 4. Dorian Partridge and Paul Grinner 8th and 1st = 9 points 5.Dene Conway and Russell Taylor 1st and 9th = 10 points 6.Richard Yates and Saul Page 4th and 7th = 11 points Our thanks to all of the Organisers and stewards Ian Golds, Malcom Stote and Martin Bedford and to Nelsons bar for hosting the results Ceremony. Seaton Carnival Open Shore The event on Seaton beach attracted 38 anglers to fish for the Seaton carnival open shore. Condition were great and plenty of different species caught during the 4 hour event. It was organised by the East Devon based Honiton sea angling club who were pleased that it was won by one of their members. Terry Hartnell took the first spot with a nice mullet of 4lb 11oz and a garfish combination. The second spot was filled by S. Withyman who had a mackerel and scad combination. £35 was made for the carnival committee.

Match report: 8th round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2017, Queensferry, Flintshire, Sun 3.9.17 (17 rods). There was a decidedly autumnal feel to this eighth match in the series with an early morning start on the upper reaches of the Welsh Dee estuary. John Waugh opened his account with a double of big flounders and added thirteen more fish from his peg at the culvert outlet to win Zone B and the match (despite Bill Lindfield's best efforts to catch him!). Steve Bonner landed 12 fish to top Zone B and take runner- up place; his bag included the joint heaviest flatfish. Catches consisted of flounders and eels to crab and worm baits but in contrast to the Summer League round in June, no bass were caught. John Waugh’s emphatic win strengthened the defence of his championship. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 12 flounders, 3 eels, 570 pts (Zone B) 2. Stephen Bonner (Wallasey), 10 flounders, 2 eels, 381 pts. (Zone A). 3. Bill Lindfield (Greasby), 9 flounders, 3 eels, 373. (Zone B). 4. Carl Edwards (Bootle), 8 flounders, 2 eels, 266 (Zone A) 5. John Backland (Netherton), 7 flounders, 286. 6. Jim Morris (Wervin), 7 flounders, 252. Heaviest flatfish: equal, Andy Hopkinson (Eastham) & S. Bonner, both flounders of 800 gms (41 cms). Championship after 8 matches: 1. J. Waugh, 160 pts. 2. Norman Dorling (Prestatyn), 130. 3 Les Trish (Crosby), 104. 4. Heather Lindfield (Greasby), 102. 5. Steve Crowder (Wallasey), 101. 6. B. Match Report- 4th round of NWASAC Summer League, Sun 10.9.17, Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool (18 rods). A severe shortage of peeler crabs contributed to the low attendance at this penultimate match in the league on a blustery day on the upper Mersey Estuary. The bulk of the catches were eels with only a few whiting showing but there were some sizeable codling landed. Most fish came at short range with a big tide run making fishing at distance difficult. Dave Shorthouse hooked several eels and the only flounder of the match to crab and worm baits fished near the promenade wall for the win.
