England Junior World Shore Silver medalists The 26th FIPS-M World Youth and Junior Shore Angling Championships were held in Ambleteuse, France from the 15th to 22nd July 2017 and Tronixpro Team England Juniors returned with a silver medal from the team category. The England teams arrived prior to the start of competition to practice on the championship venues. With information gathered in the build up to the competition the teams had already formulated and prepared a plan of attack. Both Youth and Junior teams worked in tandem during the practice days and the information gathered and shared was invaluable. The first match of the Championship was held on the northern end of Ecault beach, the Junior team were searching for bass and flounders from the holes and gullies and with all new caps bar one managed a very respectable fifth on the day after an understandably nervous first ever performance. England’s Youth team also finished in fifth place and when examining the results it was clear that the Youth team had caught a good number of fish, but unfortunately the size of the fish were not enough to lift England to a higher position in the table. On match day two, England’s Juniors were fishing the southern end of Ecault, a far shallower end with less of the deep gullies found on the northern end. With growing confidence, the team returned a better result finishing third on the day and pushing them into third overall. England’s Youth team maintained their approach from day one and a better result followed as the team were placed third overall after two days of competition with Charlie Tudball’s excellent performance earning him a zone win and the lead in the individual category. Day three and the Junior team returned to the southern end of Ecault beach. The team pushed hard from the start, and catching numbers of fish during the state of tide in first hour of the match was going to be vital to the day's result. A superb team result with good numbers of fish gave the team its first day win, pushing the Juniors into second position overall. The Youth team endured a more challenging day, again finding numbers of fish, but struggling to find the bigger fish. Rory Eastlake earned a zone win, however other results meant that England were pushed back into fifth place overall but still in with a shout of a medal.

WINNER This 260.3lb Welsh Monster Blue was caught & released on White Water by Dean Flannery who fought the fish for two hard hours.

The weather and sea conditions the teams faced on the final day were the complete opposite to the three previous days, force seven wind straight on shore had whipped the sea into a frenzy of white water on this shallow beach. England had prepared for this and changed their approach in tackle and tactics. Continued on page 2

England Juniors finished the competition back on Ecault north. The French team had performed brilliantly all week and were leading the Championship by a good margin. England were catching up and knew with another strong result they could push the French team, especially if they had a bad day. With the catches in the zones being so close at the end of the match, England were unsure of the result as the team left the beach. As the final results rolled in it was a nerve wracking moment for all of the teams, the competition was fished to a length to weight conversion to allow the fish to be returned alive at the point of capture and thus size of fish would come into play. Another day win for England’s Juniors was enough to secure the silver medal position, a solitary point behind the seemingly untouchable French team and five points ahead of the Dutch team in bronze medal position. Unfortunately for England’s Youth team, the quantity and quality of their catch was not enough to lift them into a medal position and despite their efforts the team finished sixth overall. David Graham, Junior Team Manager said: “I’m incredibly proud of the team in the way they performed and conducted themselves throughout the championship. A huge thank you to Tronixpro for their financial and tackle support for the team, a forward looking

England Youth World Shore Team company that is putting great effort into supporting our national teams. Another thank you goes to Shore Cast Leads, the pod leads you gave the team were the key ingredient to our success.” “On behalf of the team I would like to thank the stewards and zone commanders for running the beaches, the army of volunteers for pegging the beaches each day, the organisers for running a superb Championship and the FIPS-M officials for ensuring fair play and most importantly, the other nations for the great competitive competition, but also for the great friendship and comradery shown during the Championship. Finally Chris Clark, my assistant manager and the team, Riley Price, Ben Eggleton, Tom Ryder, Ben Cloke and Adam Molloy, it was an honour to work alongside and manage you, you are a credit to the Angling Trust and your country.”

Youth Team Manager, Malcolm Stote said: “First of all I would like to thank the team for their fantastic efforts, Charlie Tudball, Joseph Smith, Rory Eastlake, Callum Graham and Rhys Hayward. On behalf of the team we would like to thank everyone again for their help , financial and tackle support from Tronixpro, the Angling Trust, Shore Cast Leads and Christchurch Angling Centre, all help is very much appreciated and thank you all very much. Also a huge thanks to George Cunningham of Tronixpro who stepped up as assistant manager and did a brilliant job. “Also we would like to congratulate the Junior team on their silver medal on what was a difficult and tough beach to fish, well done to you all. Thanks again everyone and for all the messages of support from everybody back home.”

THAMES ESTUARY / NEWS

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Fishing has been excellent over the last month with charter boats from all ports getting some excellent catches of all the summer species with hounds rays and bass making up the majority of the catches. Plenty of mackerel also being caught in fact anglers get mesmerised catching them never seeming to tire from pulling them in filling boxes etc almost like a fox in a chicken shed, then at the end of the day they don’t know what to do with them. Some of our marks are unfishable due to seaweed this is a increasing problem in estuary’s we have some theory’s why this is and I wonder if other ports around the coast have these problems, its does not stop our fishing as we just don’t go to these marks any more.

Our boat Sophie Lea Brightlingsea based has had a great month on bass with up to ten fish a trip in fact it’s been one of our best years catching bass and obviously we are observing the law on retaining these fish but it does make you wonder why there is a catch limit with so many fish around. As September and Autumn approaches we will start to see the first sign of changes with whiting starting to show up, and we have had reports of plenty of cod offshore on some of the wrecks, and as we have all been told that a massive recovery of cod stocks now in the north sea they are allowing trawlers bigger quotas, well let’s just wait and see if they are right.

June the 23rd saw Als Spirit and Amarissa, full of species league members, heading out of Weymouth in strong south westerly winds. These winds restricted the angling to the east side of Portland, yet despite these conditions the skippers managed to put the anglers on to fish. 26 species were caught, meaning that some high scores were recorded. At the end of the day Steve Batchelor and Darren Phillips both recorded boat wins. This win temporarily put Steve up into second place in the league with John Bellamy staying in the top slot. After this event John was also in top spot on the species front with 22 different species to his name. The next event was an open two-day species competition out of Minehead on July 8th and 9th, involving 32 anglers on 4 boats. Species League members who fished this event had their scores count towards their final total. With some of the top “players” missing it provided an ideal opportunity for some to make a bid for the league lead. Although the fishing proved difficult at times, both Richard Ferre and Bill Cann recorded boat wins. Richards score over the two days was enough to send him back to the top of the league. Bill managed a very creditable 5th place in the Open competition. Luke League table after 8 events 1. Richard Ferre 2. Steve Batchelor 3. VernonAllen 4. John Bellamy 5. Colin Searles

Allen landed a cuckoo ray that helped him to take top spot in the Fish League with 24 species. The 4th of August saw two boats heading out of Weymouth again. Another good day was had and despite the wind, that appears to have almost become a permanent factor, there was some good fishing to be had, with lots of species being caught. Amongst them was the Leagues first Red Bream, caught by Stephan Baker. Another unusual catch was Mike Pattens tubertini/shimano rod and reel that he lost overboard two years ago and was hauled to the surface by Andy Smith. The rod/reel and owner have now been reunited. There was a little controversy on one boat over the classification of tom pot blennies and once this was corrected it revealed a new boat winner. Well done to the two eventual boat winners, Brian Moss on Als Spirit and Richard Ferre on Snapper. 38 species had now been caught in the 8 events and the lead had changed hands on several occasions. With anglers being allowed to drop their worst 3 scores there is little doubt that the league table will continue to change as we head towards the last 4 events of the year. The below tables show the standings so far, with each anglers 2 worst results taken out. The next event is on Friday September the 8th and is a 12 hour trip out of Poole. Species League table 1. PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

I was really hoping that this month’s report would be a bit more upbeat than last month’s so I will try my best and put a positive spin on things as there are plenty of hours being put in by anglers but not a great deal of reward. However, those fish that have been weighed into various clubs in the area have been of real quality. A visit down to his ‘hot spot’ down in West Cornwall resulted in Rob Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC registering another cracking shore caught pollack of 7-2 whilst his partner in crime Mike Hodge had several up to 3lb. Subject to getting the right weather conditions allowing the more distant marks to be fished, the pollack fishing should just keep improving now over the next few months. A favourite tactic is float fishing a large sand eel close to the bottom. Although I haven’t received any reports confirming such I did hear through the angling grapevine that local angler Dave Horrill of Plymouth SAC landed a good blonde of 20lb from a local South Hams rock mark. It does seem as though the blonde ray fishing is a little slow to get going this year, hopefully this will improve during September which is generally regarded as one of the best angling months of the year. Grahame Tippett of Castaways SAC has certainly been putting in the hours chasing big hounds from the low water reefs on the Bristol Channel and his hard work paid off yet again with a cracking common smoothie of 15-11 which was a new catch and release club record for Castaways. Fellow club anglers Rob

Batten and Giuliano Pellecalle had an early season look out at Devils Point for eels and founds them feeding with Rob landing a good fish of 25-2. This is relatively early for eels with October and November traditionally being the best months so hopefully we might see a few 40’s landed this season. Turning to the boats and one species which seems to be around in considerable numbers this season are the blue sharks. I am hearing of catches of 30+ fish per day per boat and have heard that on some days there were more sharks caught than mackerel! Malc Jones on Sea Angler 2 tells me he has been focusing on the sharks with up to 40 fish per day up to around 100lb. He also tells me that the reefs and wrecks continue to well with congers, ling, cod and pollack. One of the best boat-caught fish during the past month was a wreck-caught Ling of 38lb landed from Size Matters. Kev McKie tells me that he too has been experiencing some great shark fishing with blues up to 99lb and porgies to 30lb whilst the wrecks also continue to fish well with cod to 20-8, pollack to 13lb and a cracking john dory of 6-8. I’ve also been told that the mackerel fishing has not started to pick-up which is good news. Now is certainly the time to get out afloat off Plymouth – I’m desperate to get out the enjoy some of this amazing shark fishing! That’s it from me for this month – a weekend beckons competing in the Plymouth Shore League then a weeks’ R&R in the South of France! Happy Dipping.

TAKE YOUR KIDS FISHING!! Thoughts on modern times by Kevin McKie Skipper of Size Matters. 38lb Ling on Size Matters

Conger on Size Matters

Rob Batten Conger 25-2

Technology is taking over our lives at an alarming rate, with modern day smart phones you can do anything from play video games to running a business, all from the palm of your hand. When I was a kid all I did was go fishing with my friends, no mobile phones and computers where just becoming available to the public. Being out doors was our entertainment, experiencing nature at its best. The next generation is looking like a generation of computer wiz kids who will grow up looking into a screen than experiencing real life things at first hand. Do you ever remember the first time you caught a big fish and was shaking with nerves and adrenaline kicked in. That feeling right there is what gets you hooked on fishing. The truth be told there are less kids taking up fishing now than ever before, 90% of my

anglers are 35 to 65 years old. In the next 10 to 15 years there will be even less anglers, unless we try to get more kids interested in fishing. Over the last few days I have had family and friends down to visit me in Plymouth, after a 12 hour charter I took them out for an hour or two mackerel fishing. The kids loved it, so did the adults, they couldn't believe you can catch 5 or 6 fish at a time. They caught mackerel, scad, pilchards and herring. Since that evening they kids won't stop talking about going fishing and when can they go again. Memories like that will last a life time in a kids mind, it's so important the next generation have a balance of technology and experiencing nature first hand. Otherwise Fishing will be a thing of the passed.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand Well what can we say about the last few weeks on the Big Beach........ I suppose we ought to start with the most talked about presence in Dorset for many novice and experienced anglers. Whether it has been in the school playground, the work place or a public house over a few ales, the same question on everyone’s lips had been “Are the Mackerel in yet." We have even been seeing the mackerel driving the baitfish up on to the shingle in a mass frenzy, sometimes even involving the mackerel being beached with many anglers, including my own excited children, being able to just pick the mackerel up with there hands. With the mass of mackerel it has also sadly brought about a shocking amount of litter. Abbotsbury, West Bexington and Ferrybridge have all been spoilt with chairs left behind, disposable BBQ’s being buried meaning the next tide just uncovers whats been left leaving a beautiful beach looking like a public land fill site, not to mention what happens when it all then gets washed out to see. Once those bait fish arrive, as we are all aware, so does everything else and it has definitely been evident this month......... Anglers have been enjoying great sport from the usual suspects including many Undulate Rays, Bass and some very nice Bream. Along with Sole and bigger Plaice showing up on the shallow marks.

Personally, the only trouble I found if I used anything more than a single hook clip down, was that the Mackerel were then smashing the bait on the drop. It did begin to become a little annoying as I knew the fish were out there but just couldn’t get past the Mackerel . Its also been a great year to see some trigger fish back, mainly being landed down Ferrybridge end. Remember the trigger fish will bite through many hooks, so always use a strong hook when your targeting them. Bass have mainly been coming out of the deeper areas and in closer on a mackerel head or flapper with no light pollution, as we have previously mentioned in reports, with a chop on. Many Undulate rays are being landed all along the stretch of the beach with anglers catching them on big fish baits or Sole & Plaice rigs with a Lug or Rag bait. Now the big Eels should start moving, especially on the m tides, with the very increased chance of an early cod! Especially after a storm falling to fresh blacks or blow lug on a straight forward pulley Pennal. Next month is definately my favorite month of year. September is known by many anglers as the Cross Over month, due to many winter species starting to move in numbers along the shore. Its usually after the first storms with the summer fish still in full residence. I can't wait to see all the reports start coming in, you literally could catch anything!

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The tail end of July certainly proved challenging with high winds and lots of rain, but thankfully Poole Harbour and the Swash channel produced some excellent catches with Plaice to 4lb and Black Bream to 2lb 12. An Undulate Ray weighing in at 16lb 6ozs was landed aboard the Mistress Linda by Steve whilst fishing 100m from the Poole Harbour chain ferry thankfully the tide was going out as he was using a light spinning rod and took about 10 minutes to land the fish. This is the biggest fish landed in that area for many years. Inside the Harbour there have been several Gilthead Bream caught from the Rockley and Holly Bush areas and in the channels Plaice, Bream and Bass have all been landed. The fishing along the beaches has been steady producing Gurnards, Plaice, small Bream and Mackeral and more Trigger Fish are being seen, young Charlotte landed 3 whilst standing next to a seasoned angler who has yet to land one –no jealousy there.

Hayden Deraise landed a cracking 3lb 6ozs Trigger approximately 2 minutes before his father Mick landed a smaller Trigger, these extremely hard fighting fish are fantastic sport and for many anglers they remain elusive. Small Codling have been landed whilst Plaice drifting around the Boscombe Pier marks Clive Morgan and Ian Napier had a ‘red letter day’ Bass fishing, landing lots of the hard fighting fish and it was a real treat to see these magnificent fish returned. On the Banks there are plenty of small Tope some quality Rays and the occasional bonus Turbot, offshore the wreck marks remain unseasonally quiet but with the autumn approaching will fish well for big Bream during the weaker tides. SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

I’ll start this monthly report over the other side of the Channel in Alderney as that’s where both Silver Spray’s have just returned from yesterday. A good few days mixed fishing to report, slightly hampered by the weather on the last day. We started the trip of with some nice tope on the anchor half way across, mackerel have really been in abundance all over the area we cover so it makes a spur of the moment anchoring session a lot easier when you don’t have to worry about the bait. We even managed to find a few pollock on the wrecks which has been a tough ask of late. Around the Island itself we had both turbot and brill on the banks but catch rates aren’t what anglers have become accustomed to over the last few years so its best kept to half a day to keep bordem levels down and interest up. We then moved over to target bream which went very well with good numbers of fish in varying sizes and plenty of double hook ups which always gets the rod tips bouncing. Quite often on these multi day trips there is one fish that stands out above the rest, on this trip there were a few. Day one saw

Les Traynor land a porbeagle shark of around 20lb on a sideinder lure, the fish took the lure just under the surface and was released after a quick photo. One of our targets at this time of year are couches sea bream, a tropical looking snapper-like fish which are bright pink and blue. They are fairly rare usually so it was a surprise to see 3 caught across the last 2 days of the trip. Tony Lees managed to catch 2 of them up to 2lb using a flowing trace and a 2/0 circle hook baited with squid head. Elsewhere on our side of the water the bass fishing has really heated up, the fish taking a mixture of lures fished up through the water and live scad fished tightly to the bottom. And last but not least the plaice fishing is coming along nicely with most sessions seeing constant activity if you can get a steady drift speed going. We even managed a 5lb cod on the plaice gear, not sure whether it is a late winter cod or an early one? Won’t be long and we will be thinking about anchoring up with the big squid baits, check your diaries and getting booking those spaces.

Anybody who's spent the day afloat on one the many wonderful charter boats which operate from our ports and harbours will know what a great experience it can be. You step onto the boat, put your faith in the skipper to put you on the fish, take the mick out of each other all day then hopefully step off the boat at the end... easy right? Well how about becoming the skipper yourself for a day? That's exactly what myself and a few friends did recently when we headed down to Beer on the south Devon coast for the day and hired a self drive boat. Don't go expecting fish finders and flushing toilets because you won't get it but what you do get is the satisfaction of catching fish from a boat knowing you did all the hard work yourself. Don't get me wrong, these lovely little vessels are spacious enough to accommodate 3/4 anglers and easy enough to navigate around in even for somebody with little boating experience. This particular day we managed 16 different species with a couple of decent specimens thrown in for good measure. Beer Self Drive Boats is run by Simon Bartlett so if you fancy a bash at it give him a call on 07773923120 to check availability.

ANGLING TRUST LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO "HELP SAVE OUR WRASSE"

nantly on a voluntary basis. However, the Angling Trust doesn't feel that these measures are sufficient given the absence of wrasse stock data and the uncertain impacts that large-scale removal of wrasse might have on the coastal ecosystem and on recreational sea angling. Fish Legal has written to Defra to express its concern at the absence of coordinated action to regulate wrasse exploitation. Anglers can help support the campaign by signing the petition to the five regional IFCAs that have the power to close down the live wrasse fisheries in each of their respective districts – Cornwall IFCA, Devon & Severn IFCA, Southern IFCA, Sussex IFCA and Isles of Scilly IFCA. The Angling Trust also wants anglers and members of the public who fish in the South and West to lobby the councillors - who sit on the IFCA committees and can influence policy - by writing to them.

The Angling Trust has launched a national campaign calling for an immediate closure of the live capture wrasse fishery supplying fish to the Scottish salmon farming industry and is urging all anglers and conservationists to get involved. Live wrasse are now being transported from the South West of England to Scottish salmon farms where they are used as ‘cleaner’ fish, to eat the sea lice that infest caged salmon. Sea lice cause serious damage to both the farmed fish and to wild salmon and sea trout throughout the region. The Angling Trust’s campaign to end the live wrasse fishery includes an online petition, an email system to lobby councillors and a poster to be displayed in fishing tackle shops. The demand for wild-caught wrasse for this purpose has seen a boom in the value of wrasse, which was just a few years ago of little commercial value and only used as pot bait for crabs and lobsters. The live capture fishery now means wrasse is one of the most valuable species landed into UK ports – fetching up to £150 per kilo – and the opportunity to profit from this has seen uncontrolled expansion of the fishery.

However, very little is known about the status of the stocks of wrasse species being targeted or about the impact of removing these fish from the ecosystem. In addition, wrasse are an important and highly valued species for members of the public who go fishing along the coast of the South West of England, spending many millions of pounds supporting local businesses. They are especially popular with young and beginner sea anglers learning how to fish as they can be caught close to the shore on simple methods. Concerns have also been raised about the well-being of fish being transported the length of the UK, where they spend just one year in the cages before being killed when they get too large. The Angling Trust is calling for an immediate closure of the live wrasse fishery on the basis of the precautionary principle until fishery managers have sufficient evidence to quantify the impact it is having on wild wrasse populations and whether it is in accordance with requirements under the Marine and Coastal Access Act to manage sea fishery resources. Several of the regional Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs) have already started managing the commercial wrasse fisheries in their respective districts with a variety of measures, predomi-

Well-respected wrasse angler Danny Parkins said: “Wrasse are such an important species to the environment and anglers alike. They are the keepers of the reefs and gulleys and as such are a key part of the ecosystem. Being a resident species - which tend to stay in and around their family groups - by taking these amazing fish you not only lose a fantastic and beautiful sport fish which brings joy to hundreds of anglers, you are also damaging and removing a fish that plays a vital role in the marine environment. Recreational sea anglers like me catch and release wrasse whereas those taken for cleaner fish will be killed when they get too big for the salmon farms. Please support the Angling Trust’s efforts to protect these stunning fish.” Steven Neely, Owner of Fish On Lures and regular writer in Total Sea Fishing Magazine, concluded: “The wrasse is often deemed a humble fish by many but for the lure angler it offers some of the best rod bending sport around our coastlines. After all, is there any better sight than a brightly coloured wrasse surfacing from among the boulders or kelp on a summer's day? I understand why there might be need for a more environmentally friendly alternative to the pesticides used in salmon farming; however, devastating the stocks of this stunning species is not the solution. As a lure angler and conservationist I will be behind this campaign 100% and let's hope we can act before the dam-

age is irreversible.” Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “The salmon farming industry has already destroyed numerous wild salmon and sea trout fisheries on the West Coast of Scotland and now seems intent on doing the same to wild wrasse stocks in the South West of England. The only safe way to farm salmon is in sealed units with recirculation systems, which are now being required for all new farms in Norway.” James Champkin, Campaigns Officer for the Angling Trust, said: “We’ve made it easy for anglers and conservationists to get involved in the new "Help Save Our Wrasse" campaign: there’s an online petition to sign and email links to local councillors on our new campaign webpage. People can click on a link depending on which IFCA district they fish in to pull up an email addressed directly to the relevant councillors. We’ve also provided some key information to include in emails (which can be downloaded from the campaign webpage), although it’s best to make it as personal as possible. We hope thousands of people will tell the councillors why wrasse are important to them and why the IFCAs should close the fishery down immediately.”

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, September 2017

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Shore anglers and boat anglers are enjoying good sport with bass on both lures and baits. Dan Miles Redmore landed a fine bass of 8lb 7oz. There have been a few double figure fish and plenty in the 3lb to 8lb range. Combe Martin SAC Members have been competing in a two month long species competition that is at the time of writing being lead by John Shapland with 36 species. Fellow club member Dan Welch is very close behind with 35. The competition has certainly highlighted the vast range of fish that can be caught along the North Devon coast.

Shipbuilders monthly rover with Jazza John taking runner spot with a smoothound of 11lb 15oz. Jack Pike dominated the clubs junior section with wrasse scaling 3lb 13oz, 3lb 8oz and 2lb 14oz.

Boat anglers have been enjoying some superb tope sport off Ilfracombe with tope to over forty pounds brought to the boats. It is likely that shore anglers who target these powerful fish using wire traces and reels filled to brim with strong line will also tempt tope. Grey mullet enthusiasts are enjoying top sport in both estuary and harbours. Graham Snow landed a mixed brace including a 5lb 21/4oz thick lip and a 4lb 53/8oz thin lip. These fish secured first and second place in Bideford Angling Clubs Monthly Rover. The larger of the two mullet also secured top spot in Appledore

North Devon Angler Rob Scoines enjoyed a trip to Northern Norway where he boated a huge cod weighing 41lb. The fish was tempted on a lure presented using a light-spinning rod.

Several smoothound have been landed from all the regular marks including a fine specimen of 11lb 12oz to the rod of Stuart Taylor. Ross Stanway fished a rock mark to land a fine bull huss of 11lb 9oz. A few double figure conger have also been tempted by anglers using large fish or crab baits intended for bass or tope.

Ross Stanway with a bull huss of 11lb 9oz

The next few months are often the most productive months for big fish with big bass, tope, ray, conger and huss on the agenda for shore anglers. Thick Lipped grey mullet can also provide fine sport for light tackle devotees. Ilfracombe Pier offers plenty of variety with red mullet, sole and plaice likely to be tempted.

It feels like a tough summer so far for Burnham small boat owners, not because of the fishing but down to the constant winds making it tricky to find a weather window to get out in. We have only managed to hold 4 competitions so far and there is a bit of a backlog but hopefully with the reserve dates we have set we will be able to complete our fixture list. Sunday 13th August 5 boats and 12 anglers fished a smouthound catch and release competition with the prizes donated by Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club as part of their regatta celebrations. Weather for once was great and there were plenty of fish around with Lucky Strike getting stuck into the hounds landing 20 for Craig Willis and Damian Close. They also took the top 3 places with Craig's best going 22lb 2oz and Damo's 18lb. Hopefully the hounds will hang around for a few

more weeks as we move into the autumn. There are still some bass about and it won't be long before the first cod are caught. Fish of the month for July was won by Nigel Devey with a hound of 19lb 8oz 125% The next club competition is a 33 hour species comp starting at 6.30am Saturday 16th September and finishing at 4pm the following day. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 21st September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, September 2017

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Midsummer blues comes flooding to mind, and that's not the shark type either! Mid summer always comes with a pay off and here in the Bristol Channel it is that the bottom feeding fish go off the boil. That said, there have been certain days when our Charter parties have seen good results. Inshore reef marks to the west of Porlock have come good with some decent black bream, pollack and wrasse. For the species hunter, these are the places to target with many of the mini species helping to fill in the doldrums. Mackerel have again been sporadic, one day you can fill up, the

next you won't catch enough for a sandwich, let alone bait! The offshore scene has been a bit more consistent with some good days on the tope and huss from the far western grounds. This is a good time to concentrate on the wreck fishing where some good pollack can be taken. Also, though we are not particularly renown for our conger catches, the wrecks have been known to chuck up one or two really big specimens, if you like that sort of thing! Hopefully the next few weeks will see our bottom feeders waking up and settling back into a better feeding routine!

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage he weather has really put a damper on this months fishing with continued high winds and rain for the most of it, we did manage Alderney and a few offshore trips but in the main we have had to settle for fishing inshore when the weather allowed. The inshore marks are producing Bream and Pollock over the rough ground, however no real size and no where near the amount last year produced. The banks inshore are of

the same order, still producing Plaice Smooth hound and Rays but down on last year. There are however a few Bass on the inshore marks now which makes for some good sport plus one to take home for the dinner. Off shore the Cod have all but moved on with a scattering of Pollock, anchoring up for the slack water can produce some really good Bream Tope Conger and the occasional Ling.

Sea Angling News, September 2017

Port Report I have been a charter skipper for ever. If I was asked to name the one outstanding quality of our angling customers, then I would say it is their ability to laugh and put on a brave face when confronted with pretty grim sea and weather conditions. I have watched many customers suffering at sea but refusing to give in and still carrying on trying to fish. I have terrific admiration for the ‘British Bulldog’ attitude and spirit and I am proud to have known such people over my lifetime of chartering.

There have been huss, strap conger, plenty of tope, pout, dogs and an occasional special bonus fish such as the 9lb 8oz bass that turned up on hire rods set up for bream today onboard Peace and Plenty skippered by Jamie Pullin.

Turbot fishing on the Shambles has continued with mixed success. There have been plenty of fish but they are small and barely sizeable. The drifts over the banks are starting to produce a few This past month of August has been a testing bass now though which is a very welcome bonus one. The winds have been strong on many now that anglers can actually keep one each. occasions; the rains have lashed us and the sea has been angry for days at a time. Luke left at 0500 with Take the Weymouth Conger Festival for his equally keen anglers in order to try out the example. The winds on Days 2 and 3 were strong flood tide at Portland Bill and it certainly paid but because we had mainly ebb tide throughout off….so good for him and his men. (And, yes, each day, the event could be fished. If the tides most of the bass were returned as per the current had been mainly flooding then there would have outrageously stupid ‘law’ governing the bass for been far too much pressure on the anchor and Recreational Sea Anglers). we would have all found it extremely difficult to hold position to the wrecks or marks. Hats off September will soon be upon us. September to the competitors in that event for handling the and October are the two best months for inshore challenging conditions and, more importantly, fishing in the Weymouth/Portland sea area. And before any readers start thinking they couldn’t handle this sort of fishing, allow me to point out that the oldest competitor on my boat was 81 year old Sid Smith from Essex. Sid stayed on his feet right throughout the event and refused to give in…what strength of character. That’s what I mean by the ‘Bulldog Spirit’. Brilliant.

Ray fishing on the various banks, the Kidney Bank to the west of Portland in particular, will be at its most productive and is very likely to produce turbot and sometimes a brill during these anchoring sessions. The Channel Island runs will continue with bass becoming the main target species along with bream and turbot as the back-up species. Although the Channel wrecking is poor, the pollack fishing on the deep water reefs north of Alderney are producing some good pollack sessions especially on live eels.

Thank goodness for the bream. They are saving us both this side and the Channel Island side of the Channel. They have shown up early and have arrived in numbers with some very good fish amongst them. Today (Sunday 20th) , for example, one group from Somerset who were hosting a Bream competition, landed over 500 Ever the optimist, we seafarers and anglers will bream to 4lb….and, because they were using all be hoping for some settled weather….I do barbless hooks, returned most of them. 26 Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com JUNIOR ANGLING FESTIVAL 2017 Report..by Brian Dennis... Early arrivals for the event were greeted with sunshine and blue skies but clusters of black clouds began to appear driven by a brisk westerly wind suggesting that the prospect of a shower could not be entirely discounted. In the event, however, the day remained dry throughout. The registration officer became increasingly busy as the start time approached and with additions later in the afternoon, 56 young anglers were signed on, the highest achieved for this event. Junior members of Castaways, D.O.E., Rodbenders and Stonehouse represented Plymouth clubs with welcome visitors from Honiton, West Bay and these three of a group from Lyme Regis. However, there were a surprisingly large number of youngsters who were unattached, 32 in total, some of who were to have their first fishing experience. Others showed, during the course of the day, that they were competent young anglers and it seems that local clubs probably missed an ideal recruitment opportunity. The wind/tide combination presented some difficulties for those float fishing on the seaward side of the pier in particular but nevertheless the general enthusiasm was plain to see. Disappointingly, catches on the day were significantly less than in previous years. Garfish, one of the favourite target species, were entirely absent whilst Mackerel too were elusive with only 3 being caught. Numbers of small Wrasse and Pollack were brought to the scales but only 9 of the former and 2 of the latter fulfilled the minimum length requirement. Ayden Rawlins (Lyme Regis) and Brealand Wilson (unattached) caught two of the weighable Wrasse, 15.5 oz. and 1 lb. 5.25 oz. respectively. However, by far the best catch of the day was the Thick Lipped Grey Mullet of 3 lb. 3 oz. hooked by another of the unattached youngsters, seven-year old Josh Johnson. Alex Parker, speaking on behalf both the Wyvern Region of the Angling Trust and the Plymouth Federation of SACs, thanked everyone who had attended and hoped all had had an enjoyable day. He also thanked the local tackle dealers who had sponsored the event so generously. David and Simon Kingdom at Osborne & Cragg who had supplied

The low water channel at Eastham, many miles up the Mersey estuary is known for mud and a good stock of eels and it did not disappoint on either count although the venue proved very challenging. Jim Morris beat series leader and reigning champion, John Waugh on fish countback; their scores were tied. Strangely, only one flounder was caught although there was a decent sole for Carl Edwards which took the flatfish pool. John Waugh’s second place consolidated his series lead. Results: scored in continental style from 2 zones: 1. Jim Morris (Wervin), 13 eels, 400pts. (Zone A). 2. John Waugh (Wallasey), 12 eels, 400pts. (Zone B). 3.
