Chris Clark, a former world champion sea angler who has inspired hundreds of youngsters through the Angling Trust Talent Pathway, has been recognised with a national honour. Chris, of Lymington, Hampshire, has been awarded a British Citizen Award for his services to the community. The British Citizen Awards (BCAs) were launched in January 2015 to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on society. BCAs are awarded twice annually and recognise ‘everyday’ people whose achievements may otherwise be overlooked. Chris is a former World Champion who has won 23 world medals (gold, silver and bronze) during a lifetime of fishing but now dedicates his efforts to helping other future sea anglers which has seen him produce three more world champions. He
has held numerous voluntary posts representing anglers across Britain. In 2001, Chris suffered devastating injuries in a near-fatal farm accident spending many weeks in hospital recovering. He lost much of the mobility in his right arm and leg at the peak of his England career. But he refused to let it get him down instead saying the accident inspired him to give up his farm and devote himself full-time to sea angling and supporting youngsters showing a talent in the sport. Coaching the Under-16 team for many years, Chris has taken them across the world to compete in major events often dipping into his own pocket to cover costs in a sport which often struggles to attract sponsors. But the 68 yearold father and grandfather is adamant it should be available to all and not just those who can
“It is important that we do as much as we can to promote and support the talents and skills that individual children have. It is wonderful when you get them to engage and do well at something and feel good about it. It transfers into other parts of their lives. “I love what I do and really appreciate seeing how much it can benefit others.” Chris was nominated for a BCA by his fellow coach David Graham, who said: “Chris Clark’s huge impact and influence has contributed to the promotion of angling both in the United Kingdom and internationally. He has made a huge impact upon the Junior angling community by sharing his knowledge countrywide through Angling Roadshows. He teaches young people how to improve their fishing and imparts a vast wealth of knowledge of the sport.”

THAMES ESTUARY
Sea Angling News, February 2018
THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke
ontrary to many doubters there is plenty of fish being caught and it’s a much better cod season than last year well it couldn’t get worst could it,, ok they are not big cod well actually they are codling but we have had them up to five pounds and as many as eight a trip and I believe shore fisherman and pier anglers are also catching them. Still getting the odd ray but no wear near the quantities of last year that was ridicules, lots of whiting and some good channel whiting mixed in as well in fact so many that I am sure it is detrimental in catching cod as no soon are the baits on the sea bed it’s taken by a whiting well it’s never quite right for anglers is it there’s either to many
of these or not enough of that, when I was a boy to many years to remember much of it now, but I loved catching whiting in fact excited about catching anything. The other day I gave my anglers the option of a half day of catching dabs well you should have seen their sour faces, well if they had red spots they would have jumped at the chance, why just as tasty and mostly just as big and it’s something different and fun two or three fish a time sometimes I despair. Ok it is a difficult time of year so you have to make the best of what’s here now mix it up a bit and you will have an entertaining day out with a few friends and a happy skipper.

PLYMOUTH
PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy
Having shed the latest round of the Plymouth Shore League this weekend and spent 13 hours out on a rock mark near Dartmouth for a few small huss, doggies and eels I can de nitely say the shing is a little on the slow side at present. However there is some good shing to be found at present if you know where to look and during the past week shing at Beesands has started to improve dramatically with large whiting showing along with some nice spotted ray, the best of which was a nice speci of 4≠ 11 to Rodbenders SAC member Kurt Ireland which was returned after weighing. During the same session Lloyd Carty of the same club landed whiting to 1≠ 12. As the shing has been slow on this coast many local anglers have been making the journey up to the North Devon coast to sh for spurdogs. Although some good specimens have been caught, the best so far being a nice spur of 12≠ 3 to Mark Bryce. Gary Mitchell also landed a nice spur of 10≠ 3. If you are thinking of trying North Devon for the spurs then please make sure you take your rubbish home with you. There is a real possibility of access to some of the marks being removed so please clean up after yourselves. The ounder season is now nearing its end with many sh now being full of row and leaving the estuaries and rivers to go out to sea to spawn. It has to be said
that this year has been one of the worst I have ever known in terms of both lack of size and numbers, with no 3lb ounders recorded from any of the local estuaries such as Kingsbridge. It seemed that there were just localised groups of small sh and if you dropped on one of those groups then you could get a few. If not then more often than not it was a total blank. The Sam Smale Memorial Flounder Comp was held between Xmas and the New Year and a good turn≠ out of just over 100 anglers shed which included a number of juniors as well. Conditions were pretty atrocious on the day with gusty winds and most rivers being in ood and this was re ected in the weigh≠ in. First prize of £250 and a Century Tip Tornado rod went to Kev Dawe with a sh of 2≠ 7≠ 4. Bob Hackworthy of Roving Rods came a close second with a sh of 2≠ 7 pocketing him £150 and an Any Fish Anywhere rod. Top junior was Rueben Green with a nice sh of 1≠ 14 and second place was Lily≠ Kate Lavis with a attie of 1≠ 6 (beating her brother by 8 drams)! The on≠ going gusty winds have kept most of the charter eet tied to the quay over the past few weeks. Hopefully by the time of writing the next report I am hopeful that there should be some captures of heavyweight pollack from the offshore wrecks to share with you. Thatí s it from me for this month ñ happy dipping.

CHESIL BEACH
Sea Angling News, February 2018
CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Wayne Hand
A fresh start, we are all aware Chesil beach can be a magical place, that is true only because year on year this famous venue does chuck up some truly remarkable fish, apart from this it is a frustrating venue leaving many angler broken or in fact puzzled. So 2018 is no different I am afraid, I recent weeks the beach has been hard for most, we have had some little pockets of activity due to the weather & conditions more so this year than others, the numbers of say Cod are down, so what fish we have only been feeding for 1 or 2 days after a storm, where in previous years the fish feed for weeks at a time, after all maybe where it has been a poor year we have forgetting that it is almost February.
across the whole country with a sustained battering from the winds, this is making the hours on the beach minimal due to the condition’s not allowing anyone to get out on the beach. We have seen some great numbers of Whiting over the last month, lots of specimens have been recorded for many clubs with Whiting over 2lb more common than I have known in recent years. When we have had pockets of calm weather between the storms, we have seen 100s of anglers hitting the shingle in hope of landing a big Cod, as you can see from the photos yet again this famous old beach can make dreams come true.
Ben Carter with a cracking Chesil Cod Dave Lane with a big Eel, top angling again.
This month is generally the month most anglers avoid Chesil due to fishing being poor, as it hasn’t been great for months people are generally still try and hoping for that red letter day or for that one off specimen which does get caught every month.
I suppose even when the specimen fishing is slow, Chesil is the only beach in the country when you can guarantee to catch a fish I would say, with Pouting, whiting & dog fish always feed all year round, so if its bites you are after then give it a go, if its specimen fishing then please stand by for a few hard sessions.
To the fishing, Over the last few weeks we have seen some very stormy and wet conditions
Thanks for all the photos and reports, it will soon be spring

Twenty-four hours, three fisheries and a 60-mile run – that’s the essence of Fishing for Schools founder Charles Jardine’s latest fundraising scheme - The Wessex Water Challenge. At 10am on March 10 Charles will start fishing at Clatworthy Reservoir in Somerset, on a mission to catch a trout. That done, he will run the 14 miles (a halfmarathon) to Hawkridge Reservoir, near Spaxton, where he will catch another trout.
Ian Hopper the winner of the 2017 over fifties beach championshp
Then comes the really hard part – his next fishery is Sutton Bingham, around 46 miles away. Charles will run there through the night in order to net another trout by 10am on 11 March. Charles, 65, from Downton, Wilts, is an international fly fisherman and nature artist and coaches the England Youth Fly Fishing team. He has run the London Marathon three times but says this is by far and away his biggest challenge.
Tony Kirrage P.B.A.C. Championship and Casablanca Cup winner 2017
He said: “It’s really scary! I have an expert cartographer on the case, helping me to plot the best route, but it is going to be a very, very long way and I really do not know how long it will take me to run. Then there’s the fishing – as any angler knows you never know what to expect when you pick up a rod, so that could also be a challenge.”
The Wessex Water Challenge will raise funds for Fishing for Schools – the initiative set up by Charles 10 years ago, which introduces children to fishing and nature through short courses which are integrated into the National Curriculum, and Casting for Recovery, which offers healing fishing retreats to ladies who have or are recovering from breast cancer. Charles will also be running in memory of his beloved constant companion black Labrador Midge who died on 4 January aged 12. All three fisheries that Charles will be visiting belong to Wessex Water, which is helping to sponsor the event. Charles added: “I really believe in what we are trying to do with Fishing for Schools and Casting for Recovery. Angling can have amazing, restorative results for the young people we work with, many of whom have had really challenging starts in life and find school so difficult. And the results of Casting for Recovery are truly inspirational. “By sponsoring me you will help ensure that many more people can benefit from these amazing initiatives.” To sponsor Charles, go to https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ wessexwaterchallenge

VOUCHERS AVAILABLE FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS CALL US FOR DETAILS
POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins
Welcome to the New Year Over the Christmas and New Year period storms hammered our coastline keeping the Poole charter fleet tied up praying the Met Office had got it wrong and we would see a quiet period but this failed to happen, this has persisted into midJanuary with just the odd weather window available. During the build up to the festive season plenty of good fish were caught all across the Poole fleet, onboard Piscary John Winter landed a Cod weighing 13lb not a big fish but due to the scarceness this year a good catch and lady angler Tracy Perry caught a Smoothhound of 12lb 6 ozs, John Evans fishing on Mistress Linda bought a Conger to the boat weighing around 60lb. Cod have yet to arrive but on the plus side the Channel Whiting fishing continues to be excellent not only in numbers but also in quality with fish up to 4lb still being boated. On board the Mistress Linda local angler Mike Foyle whilst fishing for Cod and Whiting hooked into what everyone thought was a big Ray only for the biggest Turbot anyone onboard
had ever seen surface approx 30ft behind the boat unfortunately his leader ‘parted’ and the fish swam away but all onboard were in awe of such a magnificent fish. As usual in January some boats start to venture further offshore on the banks for the big Spurdogs and Rays that occupy these grounds this time of year, Chandlers Ford based angler Paul Whetingstale landed his 1st Spur well into double figures but due to it being ‘in pup’ no pictures were taken as it was better to release it at the side of the boat and hope to catch it another day, during the offshore trips expect to catch Bull Huss, Blonde Rays, Congers and Tope. It is not uncommon for a stray double figure Pollack or Ling to come along as a bonus. Anglers fishing Poole Harbour are finding it very hard going with very few fish being caught, there seems to be a shortage of Flounders throughout the south coast and the local IFCA’s are considering why this is the case, some have already put restrictions on commercial activities.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming
First report of the year will only be a brief one due to all the wind and rain we have had since Christmas which has restricted us to just half a dozen trips. Fishing at anchor is still producing good numbers of whiting up to just over the 3lb mark, slack water being the most productive time with white feathers or hok-eyes the rig of choice. We rounded out 2017 with some more bass both on the drift and at anchor on live pout. It’s just catch and release now until July, perhaps the entire year, we shall find out in March after a further review of stock numbers. Last week
we managed our first trip to target the spurdogs successfully. Although a large swell running from the southwest kept the blonde rays fairly quiet as the gear was lifted off the bottom frequently, the spurs didn’t disappoint with 5 fish landed all between 17-20lb. There are also some big pollock starting to appear, February can be a good month to try and target that new personal best providing we get the weather. Alderney and Cherbourg trips are filling up fast so drop me an email at info@ silverspraycharters.com if you would like a list of remaining dates.

TRONIX PRO / LANGSTONE
LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Lansgstone Report – January 2018 The last month has once again been very frustrating, with few days calm enough for comfortable fishing. Even more frustrating – none of the days over the extended Christmas break gave us suitable boatfishing weather. Nevertheless some boats were out grabbing those rare midweek opportunities. Mark Banks, Tim Adams and Mark Weakarm were out drifting wrecks mid-Channel, and in a mad hour caught a dozen very good pollack with a 15lb, 17lb and a superb 21lb fish coming in a single drift. On another wrecking trip, Mark Banks “accidentally” caught a 3.5lb bream – we don’t know what the bream was doing to the lure but it probably wasn’t trying to eat it. This has disrupted the SMAC points standing in an entirely unexpected manner! That has got us thinking though – are big bream down on those wrecks? Is it worth targeting them? It must be worth an experimental trip at least. The highlight of the month was the Southsea Marina Angling Club (SMAC) Open Cod Competition. After months of planning, and weeks of successive postponements due to the weather, the competition finally went ahead on Sunday 14th January. The prize table totalled £1,170 plus generous donations from local angling businesses. A total of 88 keen anglers including ladies and juniors turned out aboard 38 boats. We even had a visit of a boatload of anglers from the Isle of Wight aboard “Ocean Star” – or should I call it a raid, because they carried off one of the prizes! After signing in at the marina as dawn broke, the armada of boats headed south, keen to get among the cod. Despite a forecast of settled weather between two fronts, it was actually running quite a swell. I started fishing north of the Nab Tower and it was rather disconcerting to see the
neighbouring boats disappearing from view in the troughs between waves. We had anticipated a scarcity of cod, being late on in a poor season. The rules were adjusted so prizes could be awarded to whiting if insufficient cod were landed. This proved a wise move because only two cod were weighed in, the remainder of the prizes being taken by whiting. There are not many days when we actually welcome whiting but this was one of them, given the size of the prize table! Top prize of £500 was well-deserved by Dick Prosser with a cod of 18lb 12oz – exactly what we were aiming for. Second prize was taken by Kev Franks with a cod of 2lb 14oz worth £250, surely the most valuable cod per pound you will ever find. Third prize was rather bizarrely taken by a heavier fish than the second prize winner – a 3lb whiting caught by Alan Woodage. The remaining prizes were awarded to Alan Isaacs, Thomas Foster, Noddy aka Mark (he said “don’t ask” – he was the raider on Starfish), Lee Swire, Kim Bowden, George Dominy, Jon Leythorne and Martina Houghton. Martina also won the Ladies prize and young Archie Crawford took the Junior prize. This was a very successful and hugely enjoyable event, due to the excellent organisation by Steve Kelley, support from Southsea Marina and crew and help from the SMAC members including Steve Andrews for the great photographs. The month ahead is likely to see the departure of the cod, hoards of small whiting attacking any and all baits, the arrival of some good pollack on the wrecks and most of us planning for better weather and the arrival of spring and summer species. Many charter boats come out of the water for their annual overhaul in February but there can still be some surprises out there for anyone who tries.

NORTH DEVON REPORT
By Wayne Thomas
The North Devon Coast has rewarded anglers who have ventured out as the storms have subsided with some spectacular catches made in the wake of storm Eleanor. When the water has been coloured after big tides or gales the fishing has been good. Spurdog, tope and conger have put serious bends in a few lucky anglers rods. During calmer spells of weather dogfish and small conger have dominated catches as the water clears. Combe Martin SAC members fished deepwater rock marks to land tope along with specimen spurdog and conger. Dan Miles Redmore landed a tope of 33lb 10oz. Ali Laird enjoyed the session of a lifetime landing a 29lb 10oz tope and a brace spurdog weighing 9lb 15oz and 9lb 8oz. Kevin Legge landed specimen conger in separate sessions scaling 28lb and 23lb 4oz.
Veal’s Mail order manager Jansen Teakle landed a tope of 37lb 10oz. Codling have been scarce with the occasional fish showing in the Taw and Torridge Estuary and from deep-water marks at Ilfracombe. The flounder season was disappointing with reasonable numbers at times but no flounder officially recorded above 2lb. When conditions allow boat anglers have enjoyed some great sport off Ilfracombe and Lynmouth with packs of spurdog hunting in the deep water of mid channel along with specimen conger and bull huss. The ugly issue of anglers leaving litter has once again resulted in threats to close off a popular shore fishing mark. Local anglers have reacted with frustration and have offered to hold a beach clean to demonstrate that they care about this issue.

LDSFC TACKLE EVENING Bait Supplied Boat League Presentation and Tackle Evening. The Club held a presentation evening on the 15th of December 2017 to celebrate the winners of the 2017 Boat Match League, proudly sponsored by Loni’s Angling Centre. Prizes were awarded by the Club’s President, Derek Smith with first prize going to Ed Taylor who won the league outright. This is the second time Ed has won the league and he convincingly won this year’s league by winning three of the six rounds as well as being placed second in two of the other rounds. Prizes were also awarded to Ed Taylor and Richard Day for winning the pairs team prize, and to Robin Lane and Paul Hollyoake as runners up. During the six competitions, anglers caught a spectacular 1634 fish, comprising some 30 species. Thanks go to the sponsors of the match league, Loni’s Angling Centre who have provided top quality bait packs throughout the series and also to the two skippers who have hosted the series: Kevin DuellVoyager from Lymington and Phillip Higgins- Mistress Linda from Poole; both
skippers have worked tirelessly on each occasion to find fish. Thanks also goes to Colin Saunders for giving up his time to score for the competition. If any members are interested in fishing the Bait Supplied Match Boat League series in 2018, please contact Ed. Taylor on 07711 378984 for more information. The remainder of the evening was dedicated to a tackle talk kindly hosted by Tom Bagnall from Christchurch Angling Centre. Tom gave a fascinating account of his career as an international angler and talked about his experiences both at home and abroad. He then talked about squid fishing and discussed about how to go about catching them locally. Covering topics such as lures, rigs, rods and techniques, Tom gave a very insightful talk which hopefully inspired members into trying to catch this incredible species. On behalf of the club, Derek Smith presented Tom with a cheque for £100 for the England Juniors Team fund. Following the talk, an excellent buffet was provided for members along with a Christmas raffle. A huge thank you goes to Sue Moody for giving up her day to prepare the food- it was very much appreciated by everyone.

Burnham on Sea By Richard Saxby
The last month has seen a bit more activity with a couple of competitions. There are a few more cod in the bay and lots of whiting with a few insize, still lots of small thornies and doggies but the conger seem to have moved off a bit. February can be a funny month but everything seems to be a bit late this winter so with a bit of luck the cod will hang around until late spring. Thursday 28th December was our last chance to hold our Thornback trophy after 3 previous cancellations and thankfully the wind eased slightly and swung more southerly and although it was a bit lumpy early on as the day went on conditions improved for the 7 boats that made it out. Loads of thornbacks were caught with 4 over 10lb making it back to the scales along with a few decent whiting to 1lb 9oz. Not many conger were caught and very few dogs and only 1 cod. The first 3 places all went to thornies with Simon Stroud coming out on top with a nice one of 12lb 7oz and 80%. Andy Reeve took second and Pete Nicholson third with rays of 11lb 10oz and 10lb 7oz. Pete also won the pools with a nice cod of 12lb 2oz and 67%. Sunday 14th January we got the Presidents cup on at the first time of asking. It's always good to get the first comp on for the year

rather than postponing due to the weather which creates a backlog in a very busy schedule. 8 boats with 20 anglers set off in the dark with a reasonable forecast for the day. The wind stayed mainly from the east which made for a hard match but everyone caught a few fish in the end. Thornbacks, whiting, conger, dogs and cod made up the catches. No skate over 10lb made it back to the scales although a few close to our mls were caught. Winner on the day was Nigel Devey with a cod of 12lb 3oz and 68% which also took the pools. Martin Quinn took 2nd and 3rd place with cod of 11lb 4oz and 4lb 3oz, the best of a 6 cod haul. Fish of the month for December sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Simon Stroud with a thornie of 12lb 7oz and 80%. The next club competition is the Fred Peters Trophy on the 18th February. Our next club meeting is on Thursday 15th February at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

Air Ambulance Open report The 16th Wales Air Ambulance Open Beach Fishing Competition, organised by members from Pembroke & District Angling Club and Osprey Sea Angling Club was held on 14th January 2018 on Amroth beach in South Pembrokeshire. The weather on the day was similar to that which had been experienced locally in the run up to the comp, pretty wet and windy. But, the weather Gods smiled on the day giving a window of relative calm despite the wind, which had eased a touch and it stayed dry, which was the main thing, with just a stiffish South Easterly breeze which meant the conditions weren’t far away from perfect with a good surf running but with a few rollers as can be seen in the picture. This should have augured well for a good catch and indeed it was better than the previous year with the weather prior to the event not only preventing the local commercial fisherman getting out with their nets but also it meant there was quite a bit of fish food dislodged by the stormy weather encouraging them to feed inshore. However, the downside of this could have meant their appetites might be down having feasted on this free food as evidenced by the size of the belly of a Five Beard Rockling measured on the beach. However, being full didn’t seem to affect his appetite. The turnout and support just fell short of 2017 with 85 (cf94) anglers including 6 junior boys, 2 junior girls and 3 Ladies. We thank them all very much indeed for their support including Saundersfoot Angling Club who held a club match within this one, which was very much appreciated by the organisers. Anyway, the fishing was actually an improvement on 2017 with the same number of anglers, 23, including the 2 junior girls and 1 junior boy weighing in 34 (cf24 in 2017) sizeable Flounders along with the aforementioned 5 Beard Rockling, with a few other undersize Flounders and Rockling being caught The winning angler who managed to land 4 half decent sized flounder, for 1Kg 465gms was visiting Swansea angler Carl Campion, netting him the first prize of £200. Second was North Pembrokeshire rod Alex Williams from Keeston, Haverfordwest, who managed to bag the heaviest Flounder of the day of 815gms netting him the £100 second prize. In third place was very local Tenby angler Gareth Protheroe, who, like the winner also had 4 Flounder but for 1Kg 380gms, taking home the third prize of £50. The pair’s competition, in which both anglers had to weigh in, was won by Gareth and his partner Mike Mather with 5 Flounder for 1Kg 745gms. Second with 3 Flounder for 1Kg 75gms were
Colin Butler and Tom Fisher Pembroke and third, also with 3 Flounder, but for 1Kg and 35gms were Steve Parry and Mal James, with Steve Parry also winning the Stewards Draw. The junior section was won by Jasmine Nicholas who had a Flounder of 360gms beating the second placed junior, Seth Rowlands by 20gms as he had a Flounder of 340gms. The Ladies section was won another junior, a girl naturally, as no senior Lady managed to trouble the scales. This was Jasmine’s sister, Eden with a Flounder of 335gms. However, the most important result on the day was that the event, by the time all the money is in, will have raised just £10 shy of £800 for the Wales Air Ambulance pushing the total raised over the 16 years this competition has been running, probably in excess of £20,000. To thank for this sterling effort we must first congratulate the anglers from the organising clubs, you know who you are, together with Mr Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn who put his premises and valued support at this event’s disposal. Lastly, we must again thank the multitude of kind and generous sponsors of the event, who donated cash, together with those donating prizes for the mega raffle which ensured continuation of the event’s great success. These were, in no particular order, Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn, Shane Tucker, Wheeler’s Embroidery, Andrew Skeels, Osprey Sea Angling Club, Glamal Engineering of Cardiff, Grainger Tubolt of Pembroke Dock, Howells Engineering of Pendine, Phoenix Saxton of Cardiff, John O’Connor, Alex and Denis Nicholas, David Brayford, Jewson’s of Pembroke, Andrew and Leigh Rogers, Haydn Cole, Tony Ormond, Pembrokeshire Building Supplies of Milford Haven, Lawson HIS of Southampton, Sticks and Stones of Milford Haven, Simon Safety of Neyland, Sascha Dicks, Mark Bennett, Baron Woodward, Davies Decorators of Pembroke Dock, PMS Autos of Haverfordwest, St Brides Hotel of Saundersfoot, the Buccaneer and the Hope and Anchor of Tenby and Rhyal Engineering of Milford Haven, If anybody feels aggrieved that they have been missed off this list and we hope there isn’t, we are truly sorry, but thank you, most warmly, for your continued support.

Sea Angling News, February 2018
MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts
Good news is, the cod are officially in! Reports from most charter boats are of double figure cod from many trips. Alykat best so far was a fish of 18lb 8 oz taken by Kev Norman. These fish seem to be in cracking condition with many being returned to continue their spawning process. Whiting also continuing though they do seem to be shedding their roes now, this is a good indication that they will soon be on the move back out of the channel. As far as the spurdog go, west is best with some massive catches being taken from the mid channel grounds to the west of Porlock bay. Fish to almost 20lb have already been reported and there is still time to better that. The spurs are great sport and should be with us for a
good few weeks yet but don't forget, most of these fantastic scrappers are females heavy in pup so please treat with respect and get them back in the water with minimal fuss! Conger also still showing well which is unusual for the time of year. These fish normally slow right down as the water temperature drops but this year they are showing little sign of this seasonal 'hibernation'. Rays also in abundance with some cracking blondes showing on most ray targeting trips. February and March are historically very quiet months but this year it looks as if he channel may fish well throughout this period so if you fancy a trip, give us a call, we can often get out in strong southerly winds when offshore trips may be cancelled!

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle
The prospects for the month ahead in general is looking good. February in the UK is probably the worst time for many anglers. But thankfully here in the good old Bristol Channel we are spoilt for choice. Ok it can be cold wet and nasty at times, but there are plenty of good days that should be taken advantage off. You won’t catch bugger all watching TV even though it might suppress the appetite if your watching A fishing show. The past month here in the Bristol Channel has seen some respectable catches of cod and codling from A good few shore marks over the past month. It’s been a relief to see good numbers of 2-4lb codling bracket showing with a degree of consistency when anglers use their watercraft knowledge. Unfortunately the codling aren’t wide spread over large areas and are more like in small pockets. Find these holding and feeding areas they drop back into at low water and where they run on the flood is key to success. Catches of 5-6 codling ranging from 2-4lb is what we have been missing the last
couple of years so it’s encouraging to see. Especially at this time of year as many anglers give up as their enthusiasm is ground down by scare mongering weather reports and negative social media . It wind the crap out of me to see good fishing prospects on offer and only a handful anglers getting on it. I guess it’s more them them tho . Anyway rant over !! The star of the show this month on the cod front was Simon Lancastle with the cracking 17lb 2oz beauty he bagged from a low water mark just out side Minehead (see page 1). So well done to Simon on your new personal best and A fantastic photo as well. The prospects are looking extremely good for our infamous spring codling run here in the channel . Most years the spring codling run knocks socks off the autumn run by miles. The month ahead also has the real potential to throw up some fat doubles. Before they spawn that’s if they haven’t already.

The general fishing around much of the mid channel areas has been good with some fantastic mixed bags of fish on offer. The conger fishing has been very good and came a bit later than expected this year. Good numbers of double figure eels have formed part of multiple catches of them. A recent match produce over 20 of them if I recall. The best eel reported this past month was bagged by Minehead Angler George Stavrakopoulos. The inshore Cod fishing is now coming to a close, not the best of seasons by any means. Thanks to all my customers for giving it 100% and for supporting me through a difficult winter. There is still a sprinkling of Whiting inshore, these will shortly be on the move to deeper water along with the Conger and many other species. Now is the time we start to look over the horizon for brighter things. Our first seaonal trip out deep saw the usual species of Conger, Spurdog, Rays,Smoothound,Bullhuss and a solitary Whiting.

WEST WIGHT REPORT
By Arthur Savage
Firstly, happy new year to all, hope you had a good new year and the weather is going to be kind to us through 2018. The fishing around the West Wight has stayed positive over the past month with catches around the same as previous month. There are still plenty of Conger of all sizes taking Cod baits and Whiting baits which is a little tricky on a 2-0 hook. Other fish in the area
are Thornback Ray, Spotted, and Blondes. Channel Whiting have started to thin out a little, but there are still fish of 4lb coming to the net so well worth the time. Cod being the main target are still very elusive with just the occasional fish being boated, there has only been a few reported (over 30lb) this year so it would be good to finish with a big one.
A selection of winter pollack caught aboard Valkyrie Charters this month.

WEYMOUTH
Sea Angling News, February 2018
Port Report There’s no need for me to explain how the atrocious weather has affected the chances of the boats going to sea. The few calm days that exist at this time of year have to be grabbed and, if you are fortunate enough to be on one of these days, appreciate and enjoy it to the full!! This is the time of year for pollack out on the wrecks. Reports show that there is some reasonable to good fishing depending on all the usual complex combinations that Nature challenges us with. The pollack have ranged in size from 4lb up to the high teens from the Weymouth wrecks. By the time this report is read there may well be fish over the 20lb mark with February and March giving a much better chance of such large specimens. The ever reliable rhubarb and custard Storm or Tempest lures plus the blue and white are proving to be the most productive but there are so many different lures around these days that every angler will surely have their own favourite. It’s all about confidence and belief in the lure and tackle that is being used. There is always the chance of a ling or cod taking a lure intended for the pollack and, again, this chance increases during these next two months. Inshore fishing has also been very restricted by the weather but when the conditions have allowed there are good numbers of fish about with conger, rays, dogs, pout and whiting and even an occasional bream showing from the Adamant Bank and surrounding areas. Anchoring is best with the coloured water requiring baits to be kept static in order to bring the fish towards the scent trail. Private, as opposed to charter boats, have found active fishing on the Shambles at anchor with rays and whiting. It has always been a deliberate policy to shy away from naming specific boats too much during the Weymouth Port Reports preferring to give an overall review of what the area is currently producing or is likely to produce rather than highlighting any specific vessel. Sometimes, though, it is certainly worth describing a very successful day on a particular boat. Dave McCune has been a Weymouth Angling stalwart for many years and has numerous trophies and accolades to his name. David fishes from a privately owned vessel called Spot On which has more than proved itself as a very fine craft over many years. David reports an outstanding day’s action on Sunday 14th which was a day most boats were at sea. David caught a PB bass of between 11lb to 12lb which, measured at 80cm,
was accredited as weighing 12lb 14oz by BASS. Dave added to his day with a spurdog of just under 15lb, a conger of 170cm and weighing between 32lb to 35lb, a spotted ray of 4lb 3oz and a number of ballan wrasse to just under 4lb. there were also plenty of whiting to 2lb brought to the boat. Bearing in mind the very many years Dave and his friends have fished out of Weymouth, this was indeed a very memorable day for it to be highlighted by him…so well done… especially on the magnificent PB bass.
Nice huss - Duchess II
Whiting - Duchess II
Whiting - Duchess II
February is also at the mercy of the weather. When the charter boats manage to get out to the wrecks it will be all about the pollack. The inshore fishing should see a continuance of the whiting along with conger which are known to roam over the banks and open ground during these ‘dirty water’ periods. There are also couple of inshore wrecks which fish very well for eels in February. Rays featured well throughout 2017 and this is expected to continue in 2018. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland will often produce its biggest rays over these next two months and undulate rays are also likely to feature from the marks to the east of Weymouth.
Pollack - Wild Frontier
Double shot whiting - Duchess II
February has in the past been very good for turbot on the Shambles. It isn’t easy trying to run a charter angling business during these difficult winter months so anglers are urged to keep a look out for boats advertising spaces on days where the forecast is favourable. With such limited fishing taking place because of the adverse winter conditions, the chances of success are high when the boats can actually reach the marks, the wrecks in particular.
Pollack - Wild Frontier
As ever, your support for the Weymouth and Portland Charter fleet is greatly appreciated and we do hope there will be some rewarding days in this month for you. Finally, some very sad news for all who knew him. Ron Brown, retired skipper of Amarisa (his son, Keith, took over as skipper on Ron’s retirement) passed away on January 15th. This was completely unexpected and is a massive shock for his family and many friends. I am sure there will be many of you reading this have fished with Ronny aboard Amarisa and prior to that Valerie Ann and will know him as an absolute Gentleman and remember him with genuine affection. RIP, Ron. You will be sadly missed by us all.

LDSFC FLOUNDER COMP
By Brian Ansell
This year’s LDSFC Flounder open sponsored by Loni’s was full of highs despite the lows. The event saw 68 anglers attend with an increase in junior entrants covering a range of ages with all juniors coming back to the presentation at the end of the day getting a prize. The weather proved challenging as anglers had to endure a blustery NE wind without a great deal of cover along the seawall. The number of flounders caught were a lot less than desired with only two being caught. There were a number of bass caught mostly around 2lb with a couple of larger ones near 4lb, at least these kept our anglers occupied.
hadn’t heard of any more flounders been caught. Sure enough there were only the two caught with the largest being 505g caught by Roland and the other flounder weighing 285g caught by Kevin Burke. Roland claimed his £400 cash prize and the heaviest flounder prize of £200 cash was awarded to Kevin as each angler could only claim one prize. All the other prizes that weren’t won have been rolled over to next year’s event. Five of the ten juniors that entered returned to the presentation and were all awarded a prize. Unfortunately the juniors didn’t catch any flounders although some of them did land a few bass.
The first reports of a flounder were towards the end of the match (roughly an hour to go), this one having being caught from the Lymington end of the wall.
Thank you to all the anglers who attended the event this year. Next years Flounder Comp will be Sunday 6th January 2019.
Roughly 30 mins later there were reports of another flounder caught, this time from the Pennington end of the wall. The second flounder was caught by local angler Roland Blomfield an angler who never seems to fail when it comes to this competition. By the time the end of the comp came I
Sadly there were a number of flounders washed up/dumped at the start of the seawall. There are a couple of reasons as to how this happened, but the most likely is that they were discarded by someone not being able to sell or use them for pot bait as the weather has been bad.

A FISHING GUIDES DIARY By Craig Butler
First Entry After the frustration of a couple of cancelled guiding sessions due to weather to start 2018 off. It was great to get back out and welcome back Andrew Newton to the beach for a refresher coaching / guiding session. Andrew like many of us at times question ourselves when it comes to rigs, knots and casting, or anything in life for that matter. Andrew is a competent angler that wanted a bit of reassurance on how he fishes. We covered A productive rig for the area, knots and a few pointers on casting as we settled in for A fishing session. The fishing was extremely slow and A bit disappointing with A lonely dogfish and a Whiting for our efforts. Andrew’s patience with the new rigs was rewarded with his last two casts. Hooking into two big fish. Unfortunately both fish went to ground, playing a bit of a cat and mouse game both times they

came out for a second before going back down and eventually lost. Very close but no cigar. Andrew disappoint was clear but with the comfort of knowledge of the new adjustments to things it cushioned it a bit. I could see Andrew had absorbed the little but important adjustments to his techniques and I’m sure adapting these little things will help him to some better success in the future.
2nd Entry I had the pleasure of welcoming Andy Coleman from Worcestershire for a guiding session. Andy was keen to get to know and learn a new mark to fish in my local area of the Bristol Channel. With A modest amount of codling being consistently caught it was decided to concentrate efforts at Watchet. Andy is a competent sea Angler, but living so far in land he has to travel to find a bit of salt water. Living so far from a beach for any keen sea Angler isn’t easy or convenient to get the best from A certain area at any given time and Andy as many others in his situation do, sort out A guide. As a guide
there are lots of things to consider. Time, tides and weather being just a few things. Just rocking up on a beach when it suit just isn’t an option. So when the weather forces A cancellation it’s frustrating. Thankfully on this occasion the weather just held off. It was a tad uncomfortable at times but In true hardy sea angling spirt Andy soldiered on and caught the intended species, albeit not the stamp we were after. With the full knowledge of the area we fished, I’m confident Andy could return at his leisure throughout the seasons and enjoy some great fishing. Many thanks Andy Coleman for using my services it was a pleasure.
If you feel you could benefit from a bit of reassurance in your sea angling techniques or simply need A guiding session to one or more of the infamously dangerous Bristol Channel marks. Drop me A line and we can arrange A personally tailored session to suit all your needs. January’s diary is now full, I do however have a few dates in February still available for cod, Ray and spurdog guided sessions.
