S ea C loud A Legend
Beauty is Timeless
Experience the SEA CLOUD live once again before she goes to the shipyard!
Throughout her long and exciting history, the SEA CLOUD has touched, moved, and inspired many. But as the saying goes: only those who change stay true to themselves. In October 2025, the elegant lady will take a longer break. It will be “back to the roots”: the goal is to bring back its original character as a private yacht. To achieve this, we’ll be taking out the cabins that were added in the 1970s. With around half the number of guests, the SEA CLOUD will become even more exclusive – primarily available for groups and private charters. If you would like to experience the SEA CLOUD one final time individually, then now is the right time.
The family yacht
Launched as the “Hussar” in 1931, this exquisite private yacht was a floating palace for Marjorie Merriweather Post and her family.
After her divorce and remarriage, the four-masted barque was given a new name: it then sailed the world as the SEA CLOUD, frequented by royal families and political elites.
In military service
After the US entered the war in early 1942, Marjorie and her husband turned the SEA CLOUD over to the country’s Coast Guard.
Camouflaged in gray paint job and with its masts shortened, the once-proud luxury yacht now patrolled as a weather ship between the Azores and Greenland.
Party venue for a dictator
A fresh coat of white paint and new sails: the SEA CLOUD’s post-war makeover took nearly four years to complete. It was then bought by Rafael Trujillo, the Dominican Republic’s dictatorial ruler. Trujillo used it to host lavish parties with Hollywood celebrities – until he was assassinated in 1961.
Turbulent times
Major business plans, then the whiff of piracy: the windjammer changed owners, names, and home ports multiple times.
With the yacht nearly forgotten after eight years languishing in a Panama dock, a group of Hamburg merchants clubbed together to buy the yacht and restore it to its former glory.
The
ship’s anthem
A legend celebrates a milestone: the SEA CLOUD marked her 75th anniversary at Hamburg’s Schmidts Tivoli theatre – with its very own anthem.
Martin Lingnau’s “The Legend” is still the official, goosebump-inducing departure tune on all SEA CLOUD ships to this day.
Forever young
During her 2010/11 shipyard stay in Bremerhaven, the SEA CLOUD made a celebrated appearance at Hamburg Harbor’s birthday event, drawing cheers from onlookers at the ships’ parade.
In October 2025, she’ll return to the dock once more – to be transformed into the ideal charter yacht for friends, families, and small groups.
A Yearning for the Sea Cloud
A peerless personality
Even after nearly a century, it’s unmistakable: the attention to detail that Marjorie Merriweather Post gave to the design of her family yacht.
Her personal touch breathed life into the SEA CLOUD, transforming her into a truly unique personality. The warm, relaxed charm of this timeless grande dame captivates everyone – crew and guests alike.
In 2025, treat yourself to the opportunity to once again become part of our SEA CLOUD family, catch up with some familiar faces, and discover for yourself why this yacht is simply irresistible.
Sergey Komakin, Captain
Our windjammer sails under the capable hands of this Ukrainian captain, who has been part of the SEA CLOUD family since 2001. His favorite SC moment? “The Caribbean crossing in 2019. We sailed the entire route – setting a new speed record of 12.5 knots.”
Tanja Sauer, Cruise Director
Tanja left her hometown of Fulda in Hesse to set sail. After studying tourism, she worked for a variety of cruise lines –and has been with the SEA CLOUD since 2019. From the bridge to the Blue Lagoon and the foredeck, Tanja has many beloved spots on board – and an answer to (almost) all of our guests’ queries.
Tom Hook, Musician and Cruise Director
Tom Hook is an all-round class act: the American has captivated audiences at the piano for over 40 years. He’s a walking SEA CLOUD history book, and as Cruise Director is always on hand to help guests with their every need. But the windjammer isn’t Tom Hook’s only love – he met his future wife, Tracy, on board in 1992 ...
Rogerio Roldan, Maitre d’Hotel, and Bartender Lolito Saltarin
“Roger” is one of the stalwarts of the SEA CLOUD: since 1986, he has been your host to exceptional hospitality as Maitre d’Hotel. Since 1995, “Lito” has also been looking after the guests’ well-being. The friendly bartender always has a welcoming open ear – and a delicious drink to offer.
In Porträit
Simon Kwinta, Hotel Manager
Does Simon even need an introduction? He has been the heart and soul of the SEA CLOUD and a fixture on the ship since 1985. “I meet guests who have been aboard 25 times and say they return only because of the ship, our crew, and me – this makes me so proud,” says the charismatic Pole.
Romel Caibal, Chef de Cuisine
Romel, better known as “Mel”, has been the authority behind the culinary delights on board for 20 years. Above all else, our Filipino maestro loves the SEA CLOUD’s kitchen. He has worked in various roles here – first as a baker, then as Sous Chef, and now as Chef de Cuisine.
René Kronsteiner, Hotel Manager
The Austrian has been with the SEA CLOUD for 20 years, starting as a cocktail wizard, then as Maitre, and now as a Hotel Manager. “On the SEA CLOUD, we’re a great family.
I’ve known my friends Simon, Roger, and Avelino since 2009.” Don’t forget to try his very own creation, the special SEA CLOUD Gin.
Alexandre Bota, Chief Officer, and Alexandru Pirloiu, Chief Engineer
Our “Bota” has dreamt of sailing on large ships ever since he was a child. When he joined as Chief Officer in 2021, his dream came true. “It’s like a movie adventure,” says the Portuguese. Chief Engineer Alex has been aboard for nine years – preferably in the engine room.
