Visit Downtown Hampton LEARN MORE: PAGES 24 & 25
A WORD FROM LARRY
Master McGrath’s
Visit downtown Hampton I have been a resident of Hampton for 33 years, and our downtown has changed a lot in that time. In this issue, on pages 24 and 25, there is a pull-out section showing some of the businesses you Larry Marsolais can find in downtown Hampton. There is an amazing variety of places to check out, and downtown is just about 10 minutes from the mainstage at Hampton Beach. Whether you are a visitor or a local, pull out the center of this paper and hold on to it. Maybe plan a half-day while you are here on the Seacoast to stop in and visit our great downtown. After you’re done, take a cruise

north on Route 1 see more shops, restaurants and services that Hampton has to offer. The best part of this journey is the free parking — no meters and no time running out. Just park at the town parking lot on High Street. Everything downtown is within a 10-minute walk and easily accessible from the parking lot. As this is our July 4 issue, enjoy that cookout, trip to the beach, family get-together or fireworks, but please be safe. This is a long weekend for many and the driving will be slow, so take your time and get to your destination safely. Happy Fourth of July! As always, I would love to hear from our readers. Feel free to call me anytime at 9355096 to discuss local issues or to place an ad. Larry Marsolais is the general manager of the Seacoast Scene and the former president of the Hampton Rotary Club.

of their suit that’s borderline pornographic … It looks a little bit like a chicken but kind of a Mick Jagger move at the same time,” he said. Marley works on boat docks, at regatta clubs, campsites and anywhere there’s a crowd looking to laugh. In early June, Marley entertained at a clambake in Old Orchard Beach. “Three hundred people jammed into the back of a seafood restaurant,” he said with a hearty laugh. “I’m all over the place.” He also performs at more conventional places, like Jonathan’s of Ogunquit and Blue Ocean Music Hall on Salisbury Beach. The latter is one of Marley’s favorites; it’s where he filmed his latest Amazon special. “It’s everything that’s perfect for comedy,” he said. “There’s punch to it, so you can always get rhythm. With comedy, you’ve got to have that give and take. There’s got to be a pulse. Sometimes you play rooms where it just goes into the ceiling and never comes back — outdoor venues are like that, or if you’re playing a place that’s just too big. That room just pumps.” Comedian Jimmy Dunn is a yearround Hampton Beach resident, though he often jets to the West Coast to work, most recently as a writer on DirecTV’s Loudermilk. Directed by Peter Farrelly, one of the show’s stars is Brian Regan, who happens to close out the Casino Ballroom — and the Seacoast — comedy season on Sept. 28. “He’s hysterical,” Dunn said by 8

In a lot of places the comedy scene slows down in summer, but not on the Seacoast. Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach welcomes big-name national acts, the local improv scene goes weekly at multiple venues and in late July there’s a four-day festival thrown by a local celebrity featuring rising stars and favorite faces that’s as famous for its afterparties as it is for talent on stage. Curlie’s in Rochester is New Hampshire’s sole comedy-only club. Owner Joshua Guptel, who performs as Jay Grove, said recently that his venue doesn’t break stride for the season. It innovates; a midweek Family Night invites youngsters to take the stage, and Rookie League is a pro-am affair with a headliner and an open mic. “For us it’s about sustainability and knowing the industry,” Guptel said. There are more ticket giveaways and specials, “so our crowds stay consistent in size [and] our atmosphere stays consistent … so at a time when it’s easier for some bookers to take the summer off, we’re open Tuesday through Saturday.” Maine comic Bob Marley takes another approach to staying busy. “Years ago my tour manager told me, ‘Summer’s tough because people are gone,’” he recalled by phone from his family’s camp in the woods. “I said, ‘Yeah, but let’s go to where they’re at.’” From June to September, Marley tells jokes to vacationers who totally get his riffs on going “Upta Camp” — aunts with no self-awareness “show up with cigarettes and then do that side itch at the top

7 telephone recently. “I can’t believe I’m writing lines for him.” In addition to being one of the region’s best standups, with a resume dating back to the Ding Ho days in 1980s Cambridge and a long list of movie credits, Dunn is a big booster of his hometown, and a fan of the big room that’s close to his house. “The comedy coming through the Casino — that’s the A stuff, the big famous people,” he said. “I used to hang out there; I opened a bunch of shows. My brother was one of the head bouncers, so I have seen some amazing shows at the Casino, comedy-wise.” Since 2009, Dunn has presided over the Seacoast’s biggest laugh bash, the Hampton Beach Comedy Festival. The four-day event is curated more like a poker party than a series of shows. “It’s my dear friends and the people I find the funniest,” Dunn said. New faces this year include Kenny Rogerson, a veteran of Rescue Me and When Standup Stood Out, a documentary about Boston’s comedy heyday. “I legitimately find him one of the funniest people on the planet,” Dunn said of Rogerson. “He happens to be home this summer. He said, ‘I always hear about that Hampton thing,’ and I said, ‘Kenny, I don’t have a lot of money’ and he said, ‘Ah, I’ll come up. We’ll hang out and have fun.’ I would put his Zookeeper bit up there in the top five or 10 comedy bits of all time. That is how funny I think this guy is.” Dunn loves where he lives with equal vigor.
“I get to play in the ocean every day when I’m home,” he said. “It’s an odd business plan. … I’m in a writing room with these Hollywood writers and they ask, ‘Where do you live?’ and I say… ‘As far away from Hollywood as I can get!’ Two days ago I went to the supermarket in L.A. and I only had $42. I thought, ‘Well, I need some blueberries, and I’ll get some eggs and ham.’ For $42 in New Hampshire, I can pretty much have anything I want!” For the rest of the summer, there’s more than enough comedy to go around, including these events.

Hampton Beach hosts a week of live country music
William Michael Morgan, Headliner. Courtesy photo.
While 10-gallon hats and cowboy boots aren’t something you see every day in New Hampshire, the Hampton Beach Village District brings the spirit of the south to the Seacoast every summer with Country on the Coast week, this year happening Sunday, July 7, through Thursday, July 11. That week a miscellany of country music acts will perform from 3 to 9:30 p.m. each day at the Sea Shell Stage on Hampton Beach. WOKQ radio station will be broadcasting the entire week and doing giveaways; local Hampton restaurants Boardwalk, Purple Urchin and McGuirk’s will host and sponsor different days of the event, and headlining act William Michael Morgan, a country singer and songwriter from Mississippi whose top music video for the song “I Met a Girl” has over 17,000,000 views on YouTube, will close out the week on Thursday night. All of the music and entertainment will be provided free to the public by Hampton Beach Village District. John Kane, the Marketing Director at Hampton Beach Village District, said the performers are well-known in the country music scene but their fame doesn’t stop them from interacting with the crowds at Hampton Beach. “They’re all headliners; these guys are all big,” Kane said. “They’re not off-limit acts, even though they come from Nashville; they’re great to deal with. William Michael Morgan will come down and talk to everyone, have his picture taken with everyone, shake everyone’s hands. … They don’t
have the attitude; they’re just down-to-earth people.” One of the performers, whom Kane called “a great personality,” is Michelle Jackson-White, a line dance instructor who has taught in New Hampshire and Massachusetts for more than 20 years but recently relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. She will be returning to the Granite State to lead an hour-and-a-half-long line dancing instructional session each day of Country on the Coast from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It is her second year performing at the event, as she was part of last year’s inaugural Country on the Coast. Her husband, Kevin White, will also be performing at the event on Monday night from 7 to 8 p.m. and from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as part of his Kevin White’s Tribute to Garth Brooks band. Kane said that he didn’t expect huge crowds for Jackson-White’s country line dance sessions last year, but he was in for a surprise. “At first we thought we’d only have a few,” he said, “and then there were like 40 people up there and they’re all really into the country line dancing.” Jackson-White’s line dance sessions will consist of beginner-friendly dances, which she said will be different from the dances at last year’s event. No dancing partners or previous dance experience is needed. Every session has its own feel and flow, she said, because of the fresh crowd that floats in each day. “Every single lesson was different
because there were different people, so it was kind of neat, because people that were vacationing would come, but locals would come as well,” she said. “It’s fun; the dances are really easy, and then, when we all do it together, that feeling when we all dance together [is] just nice.” Country on the Coast has one big change this year: the start time. Each day events will begin at 3 p.m., instead of noon. “It was a little too warm, you know,” Kane said of the noon start time last year. “If the sun hits it right on that stage, you feel it.” According to Kane and Jackson-White, the people involved with organizing Country on the Coast strive to provide free, high-quality entertainment for all ages and a little slice of country for New Hampshire. “The hats are there, the ladies have the boots on, they line dance, they have a good time,” Kane said. “I feel like a lot of people under [age] 21 don’t always get to experience live music,” Jackson-White added. “Kids love music. … It’s neat that everybody of all ages can go and sit outside and get some live entertainment. It’s a great opportunity that they provided for people.” – Caleb Jagoda Schedule Sunday, July 7 3 p.m. – Angela West and Showdown 5:30 p.m. – Michelle JacksonWhite line dance instruction 7 to 8 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Kenny Chesney Tribute Monday, July 8 3 p.m. – Martin & Kelly 5:30 p.m. – Michelle Jackson-White line dance instruction 7 to 8 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Kevin White’s Tribute to Garth Brooks Tuesday, July 9 3 p.m. – Maddi Ryan 5:30 p.m. – Michelle Jackson-White line dance instruction 7 to 8 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Nick Drouin

ADVENTURE
Around the Coast with Caleb
By Caleb Jagoda Where I went: Joe’s Playland, 15 Broadway, Salisbury, Mass., joesplayland.com, 978-465-8311. What it is: An arcade offering two locations across the street from each other along Salisbury Beach. They offer arcade games such as pinball, skee-ball, pop-shot basketball, vintage arcade joystick machines, racing games, a ticket redemption center, prizes, ice cream and more. Each game is priced individually, costing anywhere from 25 cents to a couple of dollars to play. What I did: I drove up to Joe’s Playland having no idea what to expect. I mean, arcades are often hit-or-miss experiences. On one hand, you have the fun, nostalgiainducing games of yesteryear, with their flashing lights, little worlds of limitless fun and evergreen hope that the next time you play will finally be the time you set a new high score. These arcades bring us back to
SEACOAST SCENE | JULY 4 - 10, 2019 | PAGE 22
simpler times, when beating our friends in a game and winning enough tickets to get a sweet prize were our biggest priorities. On the other hand, you have the rundown arcades with games that never work, filthy facilities and quarter-hungry machines that don’t hesitate to gobble up your loose change without letting you even play the game. You never know what you’re going to get with an arcade, so I was understandably skeptical. With that being said, I wasn’t opposed to forgetting all my worries for a couple hours and going to play some mindless, fun video games. I was just hoping that it wouldn’t be one of those arcades that reeks of stale pizza and has less than half of its lights working. All my fears of having a negative experience soon dissipated once I perused Joe’s and found it to be jam-packed with every type of game imaginable. Joe’s has a cool set-up, as it is open to the outdoors and doesn’t have that musty, dark dungeon-feel that some arcades have. With its ambiance — the sun shining through the big windows, the constant influx of people carrying beach boardwalk food and hearing their muffled conversations — Joe’s is an easy place to lose track of time. As I walked through the first floor I found game after game, from the flashy new games you’d expect to find at Dave & Buster’s, such as touch-screen Fruit Ninja and shiny Boston Celtics pop-shot basketball, to some arcade classics, like Zoltan the Fortune Teller and the boxing arcade machine that rates your punch strength (the one at Joe’s

rated the punches from “boxing champ” for the strongest punches to “anemic” for the weakest — I laughed about the “anemic” rating for 10 minutes). I was floored by the variety of arcade games in Joe’s. The games were packed into the place, with differentsized arcade machines practically oozing out of the walls. I was later told by Donna, a Joe’s employee, that this is the arcades’ 100-year anniversary, and that they first opened up shop in 1919. Over the course of 100 years they’ve been able to build up quite the collection. It makes sense that they wanted to open up the second location across the street; they needed more room to fit all the games they’ve accrued. Eventually I got around to going to the card machine, where I bought an arcade card and put 20 credits on it for $5. Initially I thought that was pretty cheap, but how many games would 20 credits really buy? It turned out to be a lot, with each game costing between one and four credits. I started with the classics. How could I not? Of course I had to play skee-ball, holding my own on the vintage machines. Nine-ball skee-ball cost only one credit to play, so I spent a considerable amount of time there, rolling balls to my heart’s desire, only catching the 100-point hole in the upper corners once in the five or so games I played. Donna told me that skee-ball is one of the arcade’s most popular games, and I understand why: it’s cheap, it’s fun and it appeals to everyone. Next I played a little pop-shot basketball, where I wiped the floor with my friend Joey, who I brought along for the trip (sorry, Joey, but the people have to know the truth; that’s journalism), scoring 94, which was 34 points short of the high score (oh, well; at least I beat Joey). Then we discovered the upstairs room. The upstairs room at Joe’s Playland is a vintage arcade nerd’s dream. I don’t
know exactly how many vintage joystick machines they had from the 1980s, but it had to be over 30. The walls were lined with these classic video games, and better yet, they were only a quarter each to play. The upstairs room was also filled with pool and air hockey tables, which provided a nice break from being locked into each 1980s digital time machine. Joe’s had it all: the original Mario Bros. game; the original Pac-Man; they even had an original Mortal Kombat machine, all of which we spent what felt like far too many quarters on, but it ended up only being about $5 to $10. I was having so much fun in that upstairs room that I had to step out and pay for another hour of parking. I wanted to stay and play for as long as I could. I mean, there was just machine after machine after machine, and I don’t think I’ve ever played these games on classic 1980s arcade machines before, or didn’t know if I’d ever get the chance to again. Then the extra hour of parking time ran out and it was finally time to leave Joe’s Playland. I can’t say I was ready to leave; I would’ve stayed there all night playing Mortal Kombat and trying to beat level 1-4 of Mario Bros. and get to Bowser. Who should try this: Anyone who likes playing games of any kind, has anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours to spare and wants to have some mindless fun without spending a lot of money. Joe’s Playland is fun for all ages; while kids love playing the games and winning prizes, I as a sort-of adult at age 19 had endless amounts of fun playing arcade games for two hours, and for a college student who can’t afford to spend too much money, it was an ideal place to go have some fun. As Donna said, “It’s all part of the Salisbury Beach experience.”

Fired up
Smokey Bear celebrates 75th birthday in Hampton Falls In 1944 a mascot was created by the USDA Forest Service and Ad Council with one goal in mind: to educate the public on the dangers of forest fires and ways to be cautious and cognizant of the risks of participating in any fire-related activities. His name was Smokey Bear, and 75 years later he still lives on. To celebrate his big 75th, Smokey is going on a nationwide tour, and along the way he’s making a stop at the Hampton Falls Fire Safety Complex. Coordinated by the Hampton Falls Free Library and the Hampton Falls Fire Department, Smokey Bear will visit the Seacoast on Tuesday, July 9, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in what Hampton Falls Fire Department’s Fire Chief Jay Lord said is Smokey’s first visit to the area in around a decade. Over the course of his hour-long visit, Smokey will be meeting and talking pictures with visitors while a forest ranger reads to children, educates them on fire safety and gives them a “touch-a-truck” opportunity with a wildland fire engine, courtesy of the Forest Protection Bureau. Additionally, the forest ranger will show off some equipment that the Hampton Falls Fire Department uses to fight fires, including the different types of clothes they wear.
“We’ll kind of vary it along the lines of how interested the kids are and what their age group is,” Lord said. Hampton Falls Free Library, along with 60 other New Hampshire libraries, submitted an application to receive a visit from Smokey. It was one of six libraries in New Hampshire, selected by the New Hampshire State Library and the New Hampshire Forest Protection Bureau, to host Smokey, and the only library on the Seacoast. The event is free and open to the public, and Hampton Falls Free Library Director Barbara Tosiano said she hopes for a big turnout and expects plenty of Boy Scouts to be in attendance. Although the event is geared for children, Tosiano said adults can attend the event with their children, or, if they don’t attend, their children can teach them a thing or two after spending an hour with Smokey Bear and the forest ranger. “Adults are welcome to the event, but like everything else, if you educate children and you empower children, then they educate the parents,” she said. “So, if you teach children about the importance of being careful with things like campfires, matches, fireworks, etc., then the children become aware of it,
and they actually educate the parents.” Lord explained that fire safety is something everyone should be knowledgeable about, regardless of their age or home state. He said that although forest fires are much more prevalent in California and western America, they can still happen in the New England area if people aren’t careful. “We don’t get the 100,000-acre fires they have out West, but we have a lot more moisture, so we don’t have as high as that potential,” he said. “But, you know, four or five years ago there was a 200-acre fire in Ossipee, and two years ago in the fall there was a 175-acre fire in the White Mountain National Forest. So we get them, we just don’t get the 10,000-acre fires.” Lord also gave some tips to prevent forest fires and any fires that get out of control, saying the No. 1 thing to keep in mind is that “every fire starts small.” “Before they start the fire, make sure the area around it is clear. There’s nothing that the fire can transmit to and get away from them,” he said. “Have a shovel, have a water source, either a bucket or a hose, and then, when they’re done, make sure that the fire is out and truly wet and cold.” “A fire is not out until it’s wet and cold and mixed in [with] the water and the ash is all together, and then it’s truly out; don’t just leave it,” he continued. “A lot of problems

start with people just leaving campfires, and then the wind comes up and blows a spark and off it goes.” Lord and Tosiano both agreed that, despite teaching kids the facts of fire safety, people have to keep in mind that they are just that — kids — and keeping it fun while including vital information is a must for an event such as this. Thus, Smokey plays an integral role. “I think the kids will be thrilled to touch a truck and to meet Smokey, and then they will hopefully learn a little bit about fire safety, particularly in the woods,” Tosiano said. “[We’ll be] teaching them fire safety and kind of making it tangible for them,” Lord said. “‘Oh yeah, Smokey told me X, Y, Z,’ so they can associate it to something, especially for the little kids. Kids don’t care about facts. Kids care about ‘Oh, I need to do this because.’ It’s all education.” Visit smokeybear75th.org. — Caleb Jagoda

CAR TALK
Till death do us part Dear Car Talk: What can a passenger do to bring a car safely to a stop if the driver should die while driving the car on a highway? My wife sits in the By Ray Magliozzi passenger seat. She cannot drive or safely move from her seat without help. But she can reach the ignition key, steering wheel and console gearshift with her left hand. We are blessed with a carefully maintained 2010 Toyota Venza, and my mechanic (may he live forever, or at least until I’m gone) looked at me in profound wonderment and said — without expletives — “Where did THAT question come from?” It worries me. What do you suggest Barbara do if I have a “medical event” while driving? — John Well, first she should call her boyfriend and tell him the coast is clear. Actually, John, it is an unpleasant thing to think about, but there are things Barbara can do in such an emergency.
Let’s say you’re driving, and you suddenly choke on a beef jerky at 65 mph. We don’t know the details. Is your foot still on the gas? Are you using cruise control? Are you slumped onto the steering wheel? Let’s say all of those are true. What Barbara wants to do is avoid driving off the road, or into a bridge abutment. So, the first step is to grab the wheel and keep the car going straight. Next, she has to get the car to stop accelerating. She’ll do that by putting the car in neutral. Whether your foot is on the gas or the cruise control is set, shifting into neutral will cause the car to coast to a stop. You can have her practice putting the car in neutral a few times while you’re driving. Just don’t practice slumping over. She won’t find that funny. Once she has the car in neutral, she’ll want to steer the car out of harm’s way. With her left hand on the wheel, she should be able to slowly edge the car over to the shoulder of the road. If she really has her wits about her, show her where the emergency flashers are, and she can turn those on to alert other cars that you’re not just a lousy
driver, John, but there’s an emergency. Once the car is safely on the shoulder of the road and stopped, or almost stopped, she can put the car in park and call for help. Hopefully, a Heimlich maneuver will bring you back so she can look forward to doing it all over again someday. Dear Car Talk: We just purchased a used 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan Express. It came with a DVD, a user guide, tire information supplement, lemon law booklet and an emissions warranty brochure. But no owner’s manual. The problem is, the DVD and user guide contain much information regarding features available on more lavishly optioned models, but leave MANY questions regarding the controls, operation and functions offered by this Express model. As a many-decade fan of Car Talk, I’m hoping you can tell me how to get these questions answered. — Greg The Express was the cheapest of the Grand Caravans offered in 2011, Greg. They called it the Express because they
made it so fast, they didn’t have time to put any options in it. In fact, there was also the Super Express, which zipped through the assembly line so fast they didn’t have time to install seats or a steering wheel. Mechanically, the Grand Caravans were all pretty much the same. So, I’m not sure what you’re having trouble figuring out. The cheaper, manual controls on the Grand Caravan Express are usually easier to use, if anything, because they’re so basic. Like the twist tie that keeps the hood closed. But if you need help, I’d suggest the last resort for car owners, Greg: The actual owner’s manual. There’s a website called Manuals Library (www.manualslib.com). If you search for “2011 Grand Caravan Express owner’s manual,” you’ll find the full, 550-page tome there. You can then search and read it online, or download it and spend $850 in ink so you can print it out and read it in your easy chair. Enjoy. Visit Cartalk.com.

FOOD
AT THE COUNTRY VIEW RESTAURANT The town of Greenland may be small, but customers come from far and wide to one of the community’s most popular eateries, The Country View Restaurant (692 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, 431-7426, thecountryview.com), for breakfast and lunch. That’s because The Country View is more than just traditional comfort fare, according to owner Sandra Makmann — you’ll find all kinds of unique combinations and ingredients for omelets, Benedicts, sandwiches and burgers, many of which were originally created as specials but became incorporated as main staples due to their popularity. Take the Marty Scramble, for example, which features two eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, hash browns, baked beans and cheddar cheese, all served in a cast-iron skillet with barbecue sauce and cornbread; or the haddock Reuben, which has a six-ounce beer-battered haddock filet, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing on a branded “CVR” grilled brioche roll. The Scene recently spoke with Makmann about some of her favorite dishes and other must-try menu items. How long has The Country View Restaurant been around? It’s been in existence for a long time, over 30 years. I think 1986 or 1987 was when it first opened. I purchased it in 2012. I had moved to the Seacoast with the intent of opening a business and was simply waiting for the right opportunity. This was definitely a diamond in the rough. We’ve worked hard to grow it [to appeal] not only to customers from the entire Seacoast region but [also] much broader than that. We have people who come from everywhere, including Massachusetts and the Manchester area.

What makes The Country View Restaurant unique? I think the draw to our restaurant is our great staff. We have such a fun, upbeat vibe. You have to have good food, but it’s also the sense of community when you are there that is important. People come for our staff, and then the food keeps them coming back. What is your personal favorite dish? I like the CVR French toast [because] I have a bit of a sweet tooth. It’s a stack of French toast with Bavarian cream, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, kiwi, oranges and whipped cream.
French toast from The Country View Restaurant in Greenland. Photos by Gary Reynolds.
What is a dish everyone should try? One thing that’s really unique to us that people travel a long way to experience is our pumpkin nut pancakes. We have them year-round, not just in the fall. They are actually made from a muffin batter, so they are thick and dense. What is an essential skill to running a restaurant? You need to have strong customer service and management skills, as well as the ability to recognize talent in others, especially when it comes to food and cooking.
What is your favorite part of being on the Seacoast? I grew up in the ocean town of Monterey, [California] and I can’t imagine not being on a coastline. It’s a wonderful place to live with a variety of recreational opportunities. — Matt Ingersoll Give props to your favorite restaurant! Beer and pizza on the river Schilling Beer Co. is a one-of-a-kind experience My grandmother doesn’t drink beer. She’s set in her ways, to say the least, and beer just isn’t her thing — unless of course she’s eating pizza. In that case, she can’t eat pizza without it. Let’s be honest, she’s got a great point. Does anything go better together than beer and pizza? If you’re even thinking about arguing with me then, yeah, OK, we’re not going to be friends. There is perhaps no place that has the beer and pizza down together as well as Schilling Beer Co. in Littleton. Lucky me, as I found myself sitting outside along the beautiful Ammonoosuc River sipping amazing brews and eating way too much amazing pizza. I’ve tried a few Schilling brews before but I’d never been to the brewery to get the full appreciation for this gem. Schilling brews “progressive continental Europeaninspired beers,” and, in recent years, has expanded Resilience Brewing, which is its American ale side project. What that means is that you can have a delicious, hop-forward, super-fresh American IPA, and then switch over to an Abbey-style tripel boasting huge, complex spicy and fruity flavors.
During my first experience, I focused on Resilience brews and had half pours of the Combover IPA, Hop Weave #1 IPA and the Side Part IPA — all were delicious. The description on the Combover indicated I would pick up strawberry in the flavor, and that was accurate — just a really interesting flavor profile with big citrus and pine notes, and then a refreshing, subtle strawberry sweetness. The Side Part is a terrific sessionable IPA; this one goes down easy but still features great hop character and plenty of flavor. The Hop Weave was just bursting with citrus. Together, these brews were perfect for washing down one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever had. Named “Just Love,” the pizza featured mushrooms, beef brisket and arugula. First, the toppings were all in proportion. Second, mushrooms were incredible. Third, the crust is perfection: flavorful, with a crusty outside and a tender, chewy interior. They’ve got the wood-fired oven down. Even luckier, I found myself back in Littleton again less than a week later, and this time I headed next door to the tasting
room to tackle some of the Europeaninspired brews. Schilling brews “Erastus,” which is an Abbey-style tripel, and the brewery was offering a version of Erastus aged in peach brandy barrels. I know when I see a good thing and I took a bottle home with me. I don’t know that I’ve ever tried a brew like this: peppery yet smooth, fruity but not too sweet, and just layers upon layers of complexity. I just can’t even begin to try to explain the flavor experience. But I know you need to try it. Even at 9 percent ABV, it’s a welcoming brew. I also tried “Foy,” which is a Belgianstyle IPA. Admittedly, I didn’t love this at first, but it grew on me — definitely worth trying. I also tried Geppetto, a milk stout, featuring big coffee and chocolate notes and a smooth finish. Finally, I tried “Dr. Oovert,” a Belgian-style dark strong ale that was in fact “strong” at 9.1 percent ABV, but which effectively mingled an array of fruity flavors with a rich, caramel malt without being syrupy — the finish was quite dry in fact. Schilling is a destination unto itself. This is worth driving to, to experience incredible beer, great, rustic food and a beautiful setting. What else is there? I guess what I’m saying is, in life, I’ve peaked.

What’s in My Fridge Finestkind IPA by Smuttynose Brewing (Hampton): This is sort of a classic for me: nice hop character and flavor, pleasing citrus and pine notes and a crisp, refreshing finish. Cheers!

Pies! My husband’s family is an old farming family of Pennsylvania. The family has lived on orchards for generations and making pie is a strong tradition. Every event, from birthdays to the Fourth of July, has pies. Lots of them! Depending on the season, there are blueberry, apple, pecan, strawberry rhubarb and more. When we were first married I made the mistake of not leaving enough room for dessert. Not only did I get very shocked looks from the family (how could you not have pie?!) but I missed out hugely. The pies are good. Their secret? The crust. Yet here’s the thing about pie crust. It causes my husband a lot of strife. Since he has pies in the blood, he makes the pies in our family. And pie crust can be very finicky when you’re trying to move

Once More We Saw Stars, by Jayson Greene (Alfred A. Knopf, 239 pages) I seriously don’t know why I keep doing this. I have six children. Perhaps I keep picking up books written by parents who have lost their children as a talisman to protect mine. If death happened to them, it can’t possibly visit our family. But even I know — life is simply not fair. Once More We Saw Stars is the painful memoir written by Jason Greene detailing the account of how he and his wife survived the death of his two-yearold daughter, Greta. One day Greta had been visiting her grandmother in New York City. While she was sitting on a bench in front of a building, several bricks came loose and fell from an upper windowsill. A brick struck Greta’s little head, crushing it. The resultant brain injury was too much from which to recover. Shortly after her accident, she was removed from life support and arrangements were made for her organs to go to those in need. How does anyone recover from that kind of lightning strike? As a mother, for me it is unimaginable. For the Greenes it was doable provided they kept getting each other up each morning and continuing to place one foot in front of the other. At a time when many other parents would have divorced due to the pain and guilt, the Greenes clung to each other, finding strength where they thought there was none. As you can imagine, when an event of this magnitude happens, it rocks your boat. It kicks your balance to the wind. Greta had been the Greenes’ only child.
Were they still parents? How do you forgive a grandmother for an act of fate? How do you get over the guilt, the pain, the constant intrusion of what if? What if she hadn’t visited that day? What if she had been sitting a little farther over? What if she didn’t know how much we loved her? Greene is initially convinced that he and his wife will never feel joy again. And that they will never have hope again. This could have been a book where the parents obsess about the loss of their daughter. They could have gone down into that very dark place of grief and the story could have been yelled up from those depths, blaming the gods for the cruel trick they played. But this book, instead, is written with some perspective (and clearly a heck of a lot of counseling). Greta is gone, the Greenes are not — the only alternative to life is death. The parents make the huge decision to live. Without Greta by their side, but with her always in their hearts. As excellent memoirs can do, this one leads us through a horrific experience, but as we continue this journey we are given small sightings of hope until at the end we understand that yes, even with the death of your child, the sun does rise again. Days continue. You will be able to find some peace with a new sense of balance. Greene is an accomplished writer. He’s written for The New York Times, Vulture
and GQ. He knows how to craft a story, how to link themes and how to propel the action forward. This is done using his voice, his style of writing that sometimes borders on poetry. He’s like the monk chased over a cliff by a tiger. Death from the tiger above, death from the fall below — he reaches out to grab and eat a strawberry. The berry is delicious. Greene finds tiny bits of beauty in his surroundings during his grief. A tree that his daughter had hidden behind. A toy that’s spotted, the memory of a favorite dress. He constantly reminds us that, although it’s tough, if you really look, you can still find signs of life during devastation. Once We Saw Stars is the journey through the emotional mess of grief and it takes us to the other side where while there is still (and will always be) gutwrenching pain, there is also the ability to breathe again. This one is recommended for everyone. You don’t have to be a parent to understand this memoir and get its message. You just have to have made a connection with another human being along the way. We are all part of a greater whole and at some point we all suffer loss. It’s the digging down and finding of the strength to pull yourself back up that makes the difference. Consider this book a road map for that journey. A — Wendy E. N. Thomas

In 2011, a flowchart titled “Should You Play ‘Mustang Sally’ at Your Gig?” popped up on the internet. The answer? Only if there’s tip jar potential or attractive female clientele. Shor’ty Billups has another reason to break out what’s arguably the most requested song of all time. He played drums on the original Wilson Pickett recording in 1966, along with another big hit, “In the Midnight Hour.” That’s just a small sample of Billups’ credits, which include backing Little Richard (with a young Jimi Hendrix on guitar), Jackie Wilson, Rufus & Carla Thomas and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. A singing drummer, he also made some great records of his own in the ’60s, though due to industry malfeasance, none were hits. A tribute to Billups, hosted by harmonica player and blues scholar James Montgomery, will kick off the Newburyport BluesCruise, a summer series of music cruises in Newburyport harbor and along the Merrimack River, on Saturday, July 6. The backing band includes Sir Cecil Rednellac on drums and bassist Lee Lundy, with guitarists J. Laite and Satoru Nakagawa (Tokyo Tramps). “I have so much respect for Shor’ty,” Montgomery said in a recent phone interview. “He’s one of the greatest performers I’ve ever seen, and every show I do with him, he’s a joy to be around.” Montgomery has hosted similar fetes before, including an 85th birthday celebration for Billups — first name pronounced Shor-tay — in 2017. “I go back 10 or 15 years with him,” he said. “We hit off right away and became pretty close friends almost immediately.” The show marks Montgomery’s return to the annual BluesCruise after a few years’ absence. “I put them on hold for a while,” he said, “but when they told me it was for Shor’ty, I told them, ‘Sign me up!’” In the early 1970s Montgomery attended Boston University with plans to become a teacher, until he got caught up in a music scene that included J. Geils Tribute to Shor’ty Billups hosted by James Montgomery

Band, Bonnie Raitt and Duke & the Drivers. His eponymous band became one of the region’s most successful touring units. Signed to Capricorn Records, then the Allman Brothers’ label, he worked with studio legend Tom Dowd on his second album. Montgomery fell into the blues in his hometown of Detroit, seeing legends like Muddy Waters, Junior Wells and John Lee Hooker perform and learning his harmonica and singing style from James Cotton and Paul Butterfield. His most recent LP, 2016’s The James Montgomery Blues Band, was a tribute to Butterfield. It featured piano from Mark Naftalin, who played with Butterfield for much of his career, and other guest stars. An album of originals is in development, but Montgomery is keeping busy these days on a non-musical front, at work on a documentary about Cotton. The two performed together frequently until his death in 2017; the blues legend called him “son.”
A centerpiece of the film in progress is a five-camera shoot done at Boston’s House of Blues while Cotton was still alive that includes Huey Lewis and the late Jay Geils. Steve Miller, Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite are all slated to be interviewed for the project, as is recent Grammy-winning team Buddy Guy and Tom Hambridge. There’s also footage of a December 2018 show including Bob Margolin and Jerry Portnoy from Muddy Waters Band, Rick Estrin, Mark Hummel, Curtis Salgado, Paul Rishell and Anne Raines, Christine Ohlman (Saturday Night Live) and the Uptown Horns. “We had almost everyone from his last couple of bands; there were about 20 of us,” Montgomery said of the event, which happened at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, Mass. “We sat around in groups and talked about Cotton, and played. There is some amazing stuff in there.” — Michael Witthaus

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY ANDREWS MCMEEL SYNDICATION
Alabama is the new Florida
The Limestone County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout for Mickey Paulk, 35, after executing a search warrant at an Athens apartment where he was believed to be living on June 17. While Paulk was not at the apartment at the time, officers did find meth, drug paraphernalia, ammunition and body armor, along with DeezNutz, Paulk’s “attack squirrel,” in a cage in the apartment. Sheriff’s deputy Stephen Young told The News Courier officers were told Paulk feeds the squirrel meth to keep it aggressive, which Paulk denied in a Facebook video. Officers released the squirrel into the wild, but Paulk (still on the run) later told news outlets he went back to the apartment and whistled, and DeezNutz returned to him. A GoFundMe page established to help Paulk pay his legal fees includes a post saying the squirrel has been “safely gotten ... out of Alabama and it is being boarded until his owner’s legal issues can be settled.” The Limestone sheriff’s office took to Twitter to warn locals to be wary of Paulk: “Mickey Paulk is a fleeing felon with felony warrants unrelated to his squirrel.” (Update: Shortly before press time, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter that Paulk had been arrested on June 27.)

Equality got a boost in Argentina in June when that country’s National Appeal Court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife 8 million pesos (about $178,000) for 27 years of housework. Newsweek reported Judge Victoria Fama reasoned that the wife, who holds a degree in economics, put her career aside for the entirety of their marriage to keep house and raise children, and by the time her husband left her in 2009, she was too old to compete in the job market. “The economic dependence of wives on their husbands is one of the central mechanisms through which women are subordinated in society,” the judge stated. Meanwhile, the husband was living “a good life.”

Holmes Beach (Florida) police posted a query on their Facebook page on June 15 regarding an unusual item that had washed up on the shore and was turned in by a local resident: a prosthetic ear. Social media did its magic, and the ear and its owner were reunited five days later. The Associated Press reported that a Beaufort, South Carolina, couple had been vacationing in the Tampa Bay area, and the man was putting the rubber ear in his pocket for safekeeping when a wave knocked it out of his hand. Police Sgt. Brian Hall said he would mail the ear back to its owner, as prosthetic ears can be very pricey. Visit newsoftheweird.com

Someone inside let him in, and he went to bed to sleep it off. Two and a half days later, staff finally saw her peering through a window in one of the doors. The woman had made noise during her confinement, but Glass explained that the jail is a noisy place, and the staff couldn’t figure out where the noise was coming from as she moved from floor to floor. Paramedics were called and the woman was offered hospital care, but she declined, saying, “No, I just want to go home.”
PETS OF THE WEEK To help bring awareness to elder animals in shelters in need of homes, Gov. Chris Sununu has officially proclaimed this week “Senior Shelter Animal Week.” To support this important proclamation, please consider opening your heart and home to two special senior kitties that are currently residing at the New Hampshire SPCA. Bojangles and his best pal Jessie are very sweet but overwhelmed and having a tough time adjusting to the recent upheaval of their lives. They were brought to the shelter because their owner became ill and could no longer care for them. They are both around 10 years old and are understandably confused by their new circumstances. Bojangles and Jessie are lifelong friends that would like to remain together. We cannot bear to separate them, as they really seem to comfort each other. They are both in good health and still have many years of wonderful companionship to offer. Like all the animals available for adoption at the New Hampshire SPCA they are neutered, microchipped and up to date on all vaccines, and their adoption fee is reduced. Want to make a difference in the lives of two special animals? Take this pair home today!
