“It’s a really easy to get to, easy to enjoy trail system that won’t take you all day to walk, but it will give you a nice amount of time to get out in the woods and go to the ocean after if you want, or grab a lobster roll,” Johnson said.Hikers can explore three different trails: the blue trail, which is best for blueberry picking by the wetlands off trail; the yellow trail, which was once an old pathway connecting to a farm known as Independence Farm, and the red trail, alongside wetlands edges, a vernal pool and wooded swamps that were once a wide-open meadow. According to SELT, the forest was originally purchased by Charles Rand in 1947 to have a separate woodlot from his family business, which was even tually passed down to his son Chuck. Both men had a passion for the land and worked hard to manage it. They enjoyed it greatly, from walking beneath tall white pines and by red maple swamps to picking blueberries and observing won derful wildlife. After both men died, Rand’s wife, Nancy, and her daugh ter-in-law honored their loved ones by keeping the land protected from devel opment by offering it to SELT in 2014.

By Lily Hartman I pull my Jeep up to a small parking area next to a trailhead. After exiting my vehicle, I step in front of a large sign that makes it very clear where I am: Charles E. Rand Memorial Forest in Rye. I begin walking along the trail, stepping over roots and rocks as the evening sun dances through the tall trees and shines along the path in front of me. It’s hard to believe that just two minutes ago I was driving down Lafayette Road — a busy street full of traffic, people and endless buildings — and now I’m in a forest full of green grass and lady ferns, pretty pine cones and tall wildflowers. I easily find my way down the path and to a junction that divides into three main trails: the blue trail, yellow trail and red trail. I venture right down the blue trail and notice just how silent the world becomes. The loud cars driving along the main road by the trailhead are now a faint sound in the distance — one that is tuned out by the chirping of birds and crickets. After a busy day of work and other to-dos, all I can feel in this moment is stillness.

“We’re preserving something that was enjoyed by a family that they decided they want to give to the pub lic,” Johnson said, adding that the local community often contributes to the organization’s conservation projects at theTheforest.organization puts funds in place for campaigns and outreach to ask the community for support in order to cov er the legal costs of conserving and maintaining the land. “SELT has a big awesome group of volunteers that will go out to trails, and they’ll actually volunteer their time to build a bridge, maintain a path, all kinds of things,” Johnson said.

Charles E. Rand Memorial Forest is a 94-acre wooded land where locals and vis itors can trek through a peaceful forest, walk alongside pockets of wetlands, and perhaps even spot some deer and porcu pines along the way. It’s also a great area for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hunting, fishing and mountain biking. This land is one of many that is owned by the Southeast Land Trust (SELT), a land con servation organization in New Hampshire. “[The forest] is definitely our most eastern one and unique in the fact that it is an actual open-space conserved for est right in the heart of Rye,” said David Johnson, senior communications advi sor at the Johnsonorganization.saidit’savery easy-to-navi gate trail system that’s great for families, leisurely hikers or those who want to experience a short and cool nature walk right here on the Seacoast.

Nowadays, horseback riders and hik ers alike can trek by the railroad tracks on the left side of the park in the lau rels, while those seeking a simple stroll or a bite to eat at one of the picnic tables can visit the right side of the park in pine grove. On any given day, visitors in the park may spot deer in the evening, foxes and beautiful birds, from little finches to bluebirds, owls and woodpeckers.

About 25 minutes down Interstate 95 South is the Laurel, Main and Pine Bend Trail Loop at Maudslay State Park, which attracts visitors from all over New England for its gardens and pine plantations from the 19th centu ry, breathtaking rolling hills, wide open meadows, towering pine forests and diverseAccordingwildlife.to the History of Massa chusetts blog, this 450-acre park was purchased by Frederick Strong Mose ley, an investment banker, and his family in the 1860s, who established the park slowly by purchasing more and more farms in the area.

“We have one of the largest natural stands of mountain laurel in the area,” said Sudak, who leads walks and tours around the park where she discusses the natural and historical aspects of the park.She also works to develop unique pro grams that are free to the public, from weekly evening strolls to tours that focus on telling stories about the park’s history. On one of her tours, Sudak reads a poem from a “Feast of Flowers” from the 19th century; an impromptu pic nic held one day turned into a recurring event where locals would ride their bug gies to listen to dignitaries read poems as they watched the mountain laurel bloom in the spring. After the Civil War, the park had its biggest Feast of Flowers to date, when about 300 locals came by barge along the Merrimack River to celebrate the end of the war. “Some people just like to walk amongst [the mountain laurel] and appre ciate their beauty and see the river and get some exercise,” Sudack said. “Other people appreciate knowing the history.”

Best hike for trail running: Pawtuckaway State Park South Mountain Lookout Tower Trail Address: 128 Mountain Road, Nottingham Hours: Open to the public 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week. Out side of these hours and during the off season, the park is open for visitors but may not be staffed. The gates also may be closed and comfort stations are unavailable during these times. Cost: Within operating hours, day passes are $5; for children from ages 6 to 11 they are $2; visiting the park is free for children 5 and under and New Hampshire senior citizens 65 and older with a valid ID. Recreational use is free during the off season, but donations can be made to the park during this time. More info: This out-and-back trail is 5 miles with 803 feet of elevation gain and is moderate to difficult. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis, but hikers can reserve a parking day pass up to 30 days ahead of time since spac es are limited. Once visitors are done exploring this mag ical forest, they can drive 10 minutes up Route 125 North to grab a bite to eat at The Beach Plum in Epping. According to a study published in 2019 by Scientific Reports, spending just 120 min utes outside per week can have significant health benefits, such as a decrease in stress and anxiety, improved heart health, enhanced creativity and improved feelings of selfworth. This can be something as simple as a short stroll in nature after work or run ning along flat grounds in the forest. The Seacoast is full of hidden gems that allow you to escape into the wild, and the best part is that you can cool off in the ocean right after.

The forest can be enjoyed by locals and visitors who want to hike, mountain bike, trail-run or simply take a walk with their family. A variety of habitats, wildlife and other natural elements can be seen on any of the trials in the forest. Take the French South Trail and move alongside the Little River and wetlands through an oak pine forest, or observe bea ver ponds and dams as you walk from the Tucker Trail to the French Connector. You can even head to the French North Trail and hike across a long boardwalk that stands above a swamp to observe different types of wildlife, trees and habitats.

Connor Bretton, forest and wildlife habitat manager at SELT, said that “visi tors may see owls and mammals moving throughout mature pine-oak forest, shrubloving birds in stands of young forest, beavers in active wetlands, turtles and amphibians in surface waters, or even special trees like black gum, which is a species mostly limited to wet sites.”

Those who are willing to venture a bit far ther south can visit the Tucker and French Family Forest Loop in Kingston and Dan ville. According to SELT, this 589-acre forest is also owned by SELT, which obtained the land in 2010 and combined the 192-acre Tucker and 370-acre French lands. This was possible due to funding from sources such as the Wetland Reserve Program by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Ser vice. Both of these lands are next to another 27-acre land that is preserved by a gentle man who owns that land, which allows for the entire forest to spread across three eastern towns: Kingston, Danville and Brentwood.

Locals from around the Seacoast volunteer their time to help maintain the trails at the park by pruning plants and pulling invasive species to keep it preserved for the public to enjoy.

Mary Ann Dempsey, general counsel for New Hampshire’s Judicial Branch, was named the 2022 recipient of the Caroline and Martin Gross Fellowship, awarded by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Dempsey talked about the experience in which she spent three weeks in July participating in the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

What were some educational highlights from the program? One of the classes that was real ly impactful for me was a crisis management program which teaches skills to mitigate against a crisis, whatever that cri sis might be — any unexpected issue that disrupts the flow of business — and how to essentially be prepared for the unknown.

General counsel returns from public leadership program

What led you to apply for it? Judge Tina Nadeau, who is the Chief Jus tice of the Superior Court, was selected by the Charitable Foundation approximately 10 years ago to participate in the Harvard Ken nedy program. I work closely with her, and she has been such a proponent of the program and the skills that it helps to develop, so she had encouraged me for a few years to apply.

What did you do during those three weeks? The whole goal is to teach individuals new skills and how to address policies, how to move programs forward and how to engage in dialogue with folks who may have a differ ent view of a policy or a program from you. It’s an executive leadership program that’s designed to help individuals engage in tough discussions to either have a more comprehensive program or to be able to have opposing viewpoints in a respectful and professional way.

What is your background and current role in public service? After law school, I started my legal career as a law clerk with the New Hampshire Judicial Branch, which is where I am now. I did a two-year clerkship. I went into pri vate practice for 12 years. Then, Attorney General Mike Delaney, in 2011, asked if I’d join the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office to head the civil bureau. That was my return to the pub lic sector and working in state government. The civil bureau team would represent all of the state government, including the state agency, in liti gation, helping them with client counseling and things of that nature. I was at the AG’s office for approximately three and a half years when Gov. Hassan asked if I’d serve as her legal counsel for the second term of her gubernatorial administra tion, so I moved over to the governor’s office for two years. … When Gov. Hassan was elect ed a U.S. senator, that’s when I came back to the judicial branch, in 2016, to be in the role I’m in now, which is as the general counsel. What is the history of the fellowship? It’s a three-week intensive program for state and local government leaders throughout the country. … The group consists of elected offi cials, law enforcement, city and county folks and then some state people who work in state governments, such as myself. … Martin Gross and Caroline Gross were both very active in public service in New Hampshire, so they cre ated this fellowship to provide the funding for one person from state or local government in New Hampshire to attend the Harvard Kenne dy School executive education program.

Serve’s the purpose

It’s a difficult concept for most of us to think about, but after Covid, every single business, public and private, has had to live through a situation like that, so it’s so relevant in terms of how to make sure your organization is able to continue operations, projects and necessary work. That was incredibly inter esting to me. There was another class on how to engage in informed communication, both with constituents and with members of your team. … One program was about power dynamics in the sense of understanding the different groups that you may work with in your role in government and how to inter act with each [in order to] make a successful team engaging in that type of work. How are you planning to apply these new skills to your work in New Hampshire? One example I can give is [that] the judi cial branch is working on the centralization of our mental health docket, specifically our involuntary emergency admissions. It requires interaction with other members of the state government, with hospitals and with advocacy groups. That’s a perfect project to use these skills to help make sure that we’re all talking the same language, that we have common goals and that we can make produc tive steps throughout a complex process to bring it across the finish line. Is there anything else you took away from this experience? It was, without a doubt, the most diverse group of individuals that I’ve probably been in a classroom setting with since college. The conversations were so enlightening and enriched by having folks with different expe riences, different backgrounds, diversity in jobs, diversity in race, diversity in geography.

Even as busy as it was, the staff was very attentive. Many of them were teens or col lege kids, and they seemed to really enjoy their work, even helping one another assist tables, which was wonderful to see. We sat in a booth by the window and watched a Cessna take off as we waited for our nice waitress to bring us chocolate milks and water to go with our meals. Having a view of the planes taking off and landing made the atmosphere fun and

Most summers, I plan trips to the beach in Maine or Echo Lake up north, but this year I wanted to do things a little different ly. I wanted to go to a place that I’ve had on my radar for a long time but haven’t had the time to visit. The place I chose to ride off to was the Airfield Cafe in North Hampton. I found out about it a while back online. The fam ily-owned business took off in 1996 and has been growing ever since. I thought how much fun it would be to go check out the planes and food myself. The morning I decided to go, my teenage boys were more than willing to tag along. We planned to get there early. It was a nice drive from our home in Nashua. You’ll notice the flight school to the right as you pull into the parking lot. The Airfield Cafe is across from it, planted right on the small airstrip. The building itself is neat. It looks like a hangar, with small American flags decorating the outside. We approached and glanced over the breakfast and lunch menu hung on the front of the building. I noticed quite a few families enjoying their meals in the outdoor seating on the cafe’s large, beautiful patio, watching and waiting for the helicopter to take off. Rid ing one of those is on my bucket list of things to do eventually, and it was fun to see it lift off the ground that morning. The inside of the cafe is filled with cool airport vibes. It felt as though we had walked into a flight museum. The ceiling is painted blue to represent the sky, and there are many different types of model airplanes overhead. My sons gasped at the conveyor belt of planes moving around the cafe. I couldn’t believe how busy it was this early in the morning. I arrived at 8 a.m., thinking there would be only a handful of people, but the place was packed. “Our busiest time of the year is definite ly summer, seeing as we are by Hampton Beach,” The Airfield Cafe president Scott Aversano explained. “After 26 years, we have many people come year after year to visit.”

It was another awesome day trip in the books for us. Whether you have a love of planes, want a quick delicious bite for break fast or lunch or are looking for somewhere fun to bring the kids, Airfield Cafe has it all.

exciting. I saw a little boy jump up and down with excitement as a plane came down for a landing, and I was reminded of when my own two boys were that age and showed that much excitement over air planes. The smiles on so many kids’ faces — and my own — filled the entire place. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day — honestly, I’d have it for every meal if I could — so I was especially looking for ward to the food. I ordered the Morning Glory: a plate of two eggs, over easy, with seasoned home fries, perfectly crispy bacon and a grilled English muffin. My oldest ordered the French toast — thick slices of golden brown, with sausage on the side — and he enjoyed every bite. My young est son had a pancake, with two eggs, over easy, and bacon. The pancake covered the entire plate; good thing he decided to order just one. The food was amazing, and there was plenty of it left to bring home. I can see how the business has thrived through the years. The cafe’s airfield, food and airplane-themed atmosphere is simply fantastic.Before you head home, be sure to ask for a pin at the front desk so you can put your mark on their world map. It’s cool to see where all the cafe’s customers are com ing from. There’s a variety of Airfield Cafe merchandise you can purchase, as well, to commemorate your visit.

What is your personal favorite cheese that you offer? It changes so much. If I’m just drinking a glass of red wine, I love the Pecorino Pepato, which is a sheep’s milk cheese with peppercorn. If it’s a Friday night, and we’re hanging out but don’t know what to do for dinner, then Raclette is my favorite cheese, 100 percent. I lived in Switzerland for eight years, and we ate Raclette like we eat pizza. … I think what I really love, though, is pairing the unexpected. For example, we have a killer soft blue brie called Black Label Cambozola. You put that on a wasa bi cracker, and it’s going to knock your socks off. What is one cheese that everyone should try? The one in here that I would call the ‘King of Cheese’ is called Moliterno Al Tartufo. It’s a tall cheese, and it’s got those strong veins of truffle. … We actu ally put that in the beer cheese, too, and bake it. What celebrity would you like to see vis iting C’est Cheese? Truth be told, we were trying to get Ste ven Tyler in here. I don’t know why, I just thought it would be a fun experience. We knew he comes to [New Hampshire], and we were seeing where he was popping in to different places, and we were like, ‘Oh, my God, it would be so cool if we could get Steven Tyler in here.’ I even got my daugh ter in on it. What is your favorite thing about being on the Seacoast? I love the vibe. … I love that we are … one of the most diverse and interesting coasts there probably is in the country. We have economic diversity from south to north, and we have amazing scenery. There’s a lot of culture and history, and there’s great beauty.

It was on a trip to Brittney, France, in 2001 where the late Nancy Briggs Guilmette, then a personal chef and specialty caterer, was inspired to start her own gourmet cheese business. Her vision became a reality when C’est Cheese (61 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, 964-2272, cestcheesenh.com) opened in North Hampton in early 2003. Today, the shop remains a land mark destination on the Seacoast for its wide variety of imported European cheeses, hailing from all over the continent, along with other items like wines, meats, jams, crackers and more. Custom gift baskets and charcuterie boards are also an integral part of the business. Briggs Guilmette died unexpectedly in February, but new owners — and longtime shop employees — Nancy Power and Carolyn Heps-Shaw are carrying on her legacy. The Scene recently caught up with Heps-Shaw to talk about the pair’s ideas for the shop going forward, which include their own diversification in all kinds of offerings — from truffle macaroni and cheese to soft pretzels with homemade beer cheeses served warm — in addition to some private tasting dinners that are in the works, and their overall plans to begin sourcing more products locally. at C’eSt CheeSe

How long has C’est Cheese been around? Almost 20 years. … Nancy [Power] and I took over ownership on June 15, but we ran it under a management agreement for three months before that. We had both worked here for years — Nancy for 10 and me for about six. What makes C’est Cheese unique? We’re a tasting store. We don’t want any one to go out of here unhappy or with a bad surprise, and I think that’s what sets us aside from anybody else. … The other thing is, we keep a wishlist. So, if people come in and go, ‘Oh, I tried this Spanish cheese, and I can’t find it,’ well, we have an ongoing wishlist, and we’ll research and try to find those things for people. … We’ve done cool things like the Snackle box, so, you know, instead of a tackle box, we’ll give you these boxes that you can fill with whatever chees es and crackers and grapes and things that you want, and you can bring it with you to the beach. We also do cheese wedding cakes, too, that are generally [made of] full wheels of cheese. What is an essential skill to running a gourmet cheese shop? Being knowledgeable enough to be able to make it relatable to anybody that walks in here … and to never make anybody feel embarrassed or like they don’t belong. I mean, this is for everyone, and we should enjoy it.

Cinnamon sugar bread pudding Serves 8 8 slices challah 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1-2 Tablespoons salted butter 3 eggs 2 cups whole milk ⅓ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup chopped pecans Toast challah slices. While bread toasts, combine 2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Spread butter on each slice, and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture. Cut toast into small cubes . Grease sides and bottom of an 8”×8” pan with Placebutter.bread cubes in prepared pan. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, 1/3 cup sugar and vanilla. Pour over bread, stir well. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Add pecans and stir well. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Uncover bread pudding, and bake. Check after 30 minutes. The most important things to know about this recipe focus on the bread. Challah real ly is the best choice. The bread is light and airy, which allows it to absorb a nice amount of butter and cinnamon-sugar mixture. The lightness of the bread also prevents the bread pudding from being overly heavy. Also, of note is that you really need to toast the bread. This not only allows the butter to melt, but it also provides a little bit of texture that is key to this Whendessert.you make this dessert, be sure to have some sort of topping nearby. If you want to keep it simple, some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream will make a fine finish for the bread pudding. If you’re looking to utilize your culinary skills, a bourbon sauce makes a lovely topping. You can find two different recipes for that on my website. Regardless of which topping you choose, I hope you find the bread pudding to be as comforting as I do.

Ultimately, though, from a cocktail perspec tive, how much does this really matter? Yes, you could get a great fresh pineapple, take it home, disassemble it and turn it into a Very Nice Drink. Or — and I’m just throw ing ideas out, here — you could buy some of the pineapple that the people at the supermar ket have already cut up for you, or even — stay with me — use canned pineapple. Once you’ve added lime juice and rum and a Spirit of Adven ture, would you be able to tell the difference? So I tried it out this afternoon. I made three identical drinks, using identical amounts of identical ingredients, except, of course, for the pineapple, and even shook them over identical amounts of ice for identical periods of time. Using canned, precut, and fresh pineapple, was there a difference? WasYes. it a Very Big Difference? Not unless you had all three in front of you and could compare them. The fresh pineapple Aku-Aku (see below) was noticeably more sub tle and pineapple-y than the other two, but the way I see it, an afternoon spent wrapping your self around a pineapple drink — regardless of the pineapple you use — is better than an after noon when you’ve deprived yourself of such a cocktail. the aku-aku 5 1-inch cubes of pineapple — 85 grams, or 3 ounces2grams (.08 ounce) fresh mint leaves — around 2 Tablespoons 1 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice ½ ounce simple syrup ½ ounce peach brandy or schnapps 1½ ounce golden rum Muddle the pineapple and mint together in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Smash them together thoroughly. Really press the issue. Try not to splash yourself. Add lime juice, syrup, brandy, rum and five ice cubes (around 80 grams). No, it really doesn’t matter how much ice you use, but since I had weighed it anyway, in the Name of Sci ence, I thought I’d just put it out there. Shake thoroughly for 30 seconds. Strain into a coupe glass or other small, stemmed glass. Face west-southwest — the direction of Poly nesia — as you drink it. You might be forgiven if you think this will be a fairly sweet drink — pineapple, plus peach brandy, plus simple syrup — but it’s a surpris ingly refreshing and grown-up drink. The mint gives everything a faint hint of muskiness and sophistication. The glass’s stem keeps the drink cold. Your delightful personality and sense of inner peace keep the conversation excellent. Take it from the houseplant I spent 20 min utes talking to after testing and drinking three of these. The Pineapple Man slaps his palm to his face and groans. “Ugh! I can’t believe this; I’m so embarrassed.”Didyoufind that joke a little frustrating and confusing? Welcome to the World of Pineapple. Most of us have been there. You’ll be work ing your way through the supermarket, trying to decide what to make for dinner tomorrow night. (You’ll probably go with meet-loaf. You spell it like that because you generally improvise it. Your mother never used a recipe for meat loaf, and pride or stubbornness or something keeps you from looking up an actual recipe for it, so you’ll end up winging it. Again. And like always, your husband or girlfriend will look at the vaguely loaf-shaped dish placed in front of them and ask, “Are you sure this is meatloaf?” And you’ll answer like you always do, “Yes, absolutely. Honey, meet Loaf.” It’s little tradi tions like this that relationships are founded on.) Anyway, you’ll be walking through the pro duce section, eyeing the cilantro suspiciously, when your attention will be grabbed by a giant display of fresh pineapples. Overtaken by the Spirit of the Islands — Oahu, Easter, Coney: one of the islands — you will impulsively decide to buy one. Until you pick it up and realize that you have no idea how to pick out a good one. There is a lot of advice out there for picking a ripe pineapple and most of it is iffy at best. You’ll hear that you should try to pull one of the leaves out, or squeeze it, or heft it in your hand to see if it feels heavy for its size. (If you don’t know how to pick out a pineapple, how in the world are you supposed to decide if it’s heavy or Innot?)reality, your best options are to go by col or and Color:smell.Get the pineapple that is the closest to a shade of golden-orange as possible. This can occasionally be deceptive, but the deeper a shade of green a pineapple is, the more likely it is to be underripe. A better guide is smell. Hold the pineapple in your hand, ignore the people around you and close your eyes. Imagine yourself somewhere warm and tropical. Imagine pushing yourself through the crowd at an outdoor market. Visu alize an old man in a straw hat sitting next to a giant pile of pineapples warming in the sun. Imagine the smell that would come off them. The pineapples, not the old man. Now sniff your pineapple’s butt. Does it smell like that tropical marketplace? Even a little? If so, you’ve got your pineapple. If all you smell is your own rising sense of awkwardness and embarrassment, move on. (With all that said, you’ll probably have a better chance of scoring a good pineapple at an Asian or Latin market, where they cater to people who Know Their Pineapples, and who will not be trifled with.)

Finally, for those who insist NASCAR is a sport, Kyle Petty is out with Swerve or Die: Life at My Speed in the First Family of NASCAR Racing (St. Martin’s Press, 288 pag es). Now retired and a commentator for NBC Sports, Petty is the son of the late NASCAR legend Richard Petty. It’s a gutsy title, given that his driver son, Adam, was killed in a prac tice run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon 22 years ago. — Jennifer Graham

There are chapters in the book that don’t work as well. If you’ve never heard of, and don’t care for, the band “The Hold Steady,” you are unlikely to care about them after read ing Fitzgerald’s fanboy tribute. (That said, if you love the band, run and get a copy and jump immediately to page 78.) Fitzgerald’s love letter to his favorite bar is best if you, too, have a bar that works double duty as a home. And he abandons all pretenses of chro nology after adulthood; jumping back, for example, to an incident at prep school (that I frankly wish were not now in my brain) after relating some stories of international travel. But none of that prepares us for the discus sion of Fitzgerald’s six months of “modeling” for a porn website, which is information I really didn’t want or need. (The book jack et only mentions bartending in San Francisco and smuggling medical supplies into Bur ma.) TMI. Truly. After that, however, he slips into sentimen tal mode for a musing on family that gives hope that even the most messed up families on the planet — or least in Dirtbag, Massa chusetts — can end on a sweet note. It’s not the book we want or expect, but maybe it’s a book some of us need. B —

Jennifer Graham Book noteS When the lazy, hazy, crazy days of sum mer draw near to a close, it’s usually time for a new, highly anticipated, deeply reported book on the New England Patriots to appear, one that will finally be the “definitive story” of the NFL dynasty. Even in the absence of Tom Brady, we had one last year: It’s Better to Be Feared by Seth Wickersham (Liver ight, 528 pages). This year: crickets. Other than a few selfpublished guides to fantasy football, there’s not a lot out there. Aside from an upcoming biography of Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson (Swagger, due out in November), the only marquee title welcoming the return of the football season is Rise of the Black Quarterback, What it Means for Ameri ca by ESPN writer Jason Reid (Andscape, 288 pages). The book begins with the story of the first African American to become an NFL head coach, Fritz Pollard, and works its way up to legends-in-progress like Patrick Mahomes, Colin Kaepernick, Lamar Jack son and Kyler Murray. There’s also a new book on Jim Thorpe, the multisport athlete who was the first Native American to win a gold medal for Team USA in the Olympics. Path Lit By Lightning (Simon & Schuster, 672 pages) is not for anyone with only a casual history in Thorpe and his achievements, but resides in that “definitive history” genre. It’s by Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss, who chronicles Thorpe’s excellence in football, baseball, basketball and the decathlon while also examining the more sobering realities of his life, such as his struggles with alcoholism. Thorpe is still considered by many to be the world’s greatest athlete, and there’s even a town in Pennsylvania named after him. Publisher’s Weekly calls this an essential work that “restores a legendary figure to his rightful place in history.”

Dirtbag, Massachusetts is full of good sto ries, most of which skirt ethical lines, such as Fitzgerald’s father taking him to Red Sox games and usually getting seats “so close you could smell the grass” by telling ushers that it was his son’s first game. (“I must have had a hundred first games.”) There is a roguish charm to the family’s story, not only in the illicit conception, the “happy accident,” but in how hard it seems that Fitzgerald’s parents were trying. As a young child, the father, who strug gled with alcoholism, read him The Hobbit and “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” The father would let his son accompany him on a bike while he ran along the Charles River. For a time, it was a vibrant little family, one that was intellectually alive. But there was also an ever-present grubby poverty and worsening relationship problems that caused his mother to cry herself to sleep at night and to over share with her young son. Fitzgerald writes that his parents’ problems — “her sadness, his anger”— became his as well. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald himself was grow ing up rough around the edges. When he went to confession at age 12, “I told the priest about breaking into houses to raid liquor cabinets, lifting bottles from package stores and ciga rettes from grocery stores, trading bottles and cigarettes for weed and mushrooms.” The priest himself could not cast the first stone; the story turns dark when young Isaac con fesses a sexual encounter and the priest shows an unusual lurid interest in the details. That segues into a discussion of the sex abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston — for a while, Fitzgerald’s mom worked at the cathedral while Bernard Law (archbishop of Boston from 1984 to 2002) was in charge and she would take him to work. As such, he has stories to tell about that, one truly concern ing, although when his mother much later got around to asking him if he had ever been molested, he could say “no” honestly. But he likely came Fitzgeraldclose.isno longer a practicing Cath olic; he doesn’t even believe in God but says “I still pray anytime I’m in trouble, or feel ing lost, or alone, which is to say I still do it almost daily.” He also has an attachment to St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, and has a tattoo with an image of the saint, among others. It’s a great metaphor for how any reli gious upbringing sinks into our pores and stays there, whether we want it there or not. From there, Fitzgerald takes his substantial comic gifts to describe his stint as a fat kid (although the length of time that he was over weight appears greatly overstated), the joy he found in a high-school “fight club” inspired by the Edward Norton-Brad Pitt movie, and his experience at boarding school, after get ting himself admitted on a full scholarship because he was so desperate to leave his dilapidated mill town. When he arrived, he didn’t even have sheets for his bed, or a jack et and tie to wear to the school’s first-night formal dinner. In a poignant moment that seems to sum up the deprivations of his child hood, Fitzgerald explains that he borrowed an overlarge jacket and tie from his Cape Cod roommate and stood there awkwardly, unsure of how to knot the tie. The roommate, who wasn’t a stereotypical prep-school jerk, took notice, and smoothly offered to help. It’s the kind of moment that sticks with you, and one that shows that Fitzgerald has humanity — and appreciates it in others.

Dirtbag, Massachusetts by Isaac Fitzgerald (Bloomsbury, 242 pages) When people outside of New England think about Massachusetts, they think about Boston — the history, the sports, the Brahmins. Isaac Fitzgerald, however, hails from the seamier side of the Commonwealth. His childhood memories include a stint at a homeless shelter in Boston and a generally miserable encampment in a Worcester Coun ty town called Athol, which is sometimes irreverently referred to as an expletive that stands in for a body part. You can’t use that in a book title, howev er, so Fitzgerald’s memoir is called Dirtbag, Massachusetts.

“Telling a child at a very young age, whom you’re raising in the Catholic Church, that he was a miracle conception is a choice,” he writes. “Messy parenting, maybe, but it makes for another good story.”

Next, it’s part sports, part business and probably part self-help, but college football fanat ics will want to check out The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban (Matt Holt, 256 pages) by John Talty. The book promises an inside look at how Saban, longtime coach of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, became “the greatest ever.” (Lou Holtz might like a word.) Presumably this builds upon Saban’s own inspirational book, How Good Do You Want to Be?, published in 2007, the year he took over at Alabama.

Subtitled “a confessional,” the book is exactly that, and it’s not just Fitzgerald’s sins that are confessed here, but those of his par ents and friends. “My parents were married when they had me, just to different people,” Fitzgerald begins. It’s a catchy line though somewhat diminished by Fitzgerald’s admission that he’s been saying this to people for much of his adult life; it was a set-up in search of a book-lengthFitzgerald,punchline.whoonce was the books edi tor for Buzzfeed and wrote a children’s book called How to Be a Pirate, has the kind of life trajectory that is defiant of its origins. His parents, who were divinity school students when they met and had an affair, were the sort of people who looked good on paper but were a Dumpster fire in reality. And Fitzger ald has no qualms about airing the family’s dirty laundry. While married to other people, for example, his parents would say they were off on “spiritual retreats” while in fact they were meeting for joyous trysts in the White Mountains. (He was conceived on Mount Carrigain.) His mother later told him that she considered getting an abortion and mused, “Maybe it would have been for the best.”

More than two dozen top-echelon comics are scheduled to perform during Jimmy Dunn’s Hampton Beach Comedy Festival, going on now through Sunday, Aug. 21, with shows nightly at The Back Hideaway, an open-air deck at McGuirk’s Ocean View Hotel and Restaurant on Hampton Beach’s Ocean Boulevard. Dunn is one of a crop of successful com ics who cut their teeth in greater Boston clubs and rose to national prominence. Dunn said that in 2009 he first invited some comedian friends to his oceanfront home to flip steaks on the backyard grill and later head to Ashworth by the Sea to perform a couple of sets. Those first few events fea tured one or two performers along with Dunn. Thirteen years later, the occasion has grown into a five-day festival featuring some 25 seasoned stand-up artists. “I used to have to call people and ask them to perform,” Dunn said, speaking from his Seacoast office. “Now, they call me.”Scheduled to appear at the festival Thursday night are Tony V, Tony’s son Gus V, Janet McNamara, Mark Riley, Steve Bjork and Will Noonan. Friday night, you can catch Dan Boulg er, Mike Whitman, Dan Crohn, Karen Morgan, Jason Merrill and Dan Donahue. Saturday night’s bill features Kathy Gilmour, Ryan Gartley, Dan Miller, Andrew Della Volpe and Ken Rogerson. The festival concludes Sunday with Tom Clark, James Dorsey, Caro lyn Plummer, Graig Murphy and Kelly MacFarland.Eachnight, Dunn will host and Boston comic Dave Rattigan will also perform. “It’s a showcase format with short sets and stand-ups presenting their best stuff. It packs a whole lot of great comedy into a short time,” Dunn said. “The cost to see this kind of talent is a bargain, and the amphitheater setting at McGuirk’s is per fect. It couldn’t be more Hampton Beach.”

Bevy of comics perform at Hampton Beach Comedy Festival

An exhibit featuring the work of Zoe Brooke is on view now through Aug. 28 at the Seacoast Art Association gallery (130 Water St., Exeter). Brooke is a self-taught artist whose work can be found in galleries across New England. Diagnosed last year with a rare genetic eye disease, Brooke will eventually lose her central and color vision. For now, she has set out to create as many works as possible. Dunn got his start in comedy per forming in smaller clubs around Boston and hosting sports entertainment shows on the New England Sports Network (NESN), where his style of Bostoninflected humor and takes on local teams was a hit. He made his national tele vision debut in 2014 on the Late Show with David Letterman. Appearances with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel fol lowed. He also co-starred in the CBS comedy series The McCarthys, playing the droll Sean McCarthy, an adult son in a Boston Irish-Catholic family. “The role called for a fat dumb guy who likes sandwiches. That guy was basi cally the real me,” Dunn said. The Hampton Beach Comedy Festi val is a chance for Dunn to return to his roots. He grew up in Hampton, working quintessential summer jobs at the beach — washing dishes at Sea Ketch, parking cars at the Ashworth, working in the arcade. “When I was a kid I’d ride my bicycle to be at work washing dishes by noon,” he said. “After work we’d hang outside the Casino and listen to the bands. It was such a colorful scene and a great place to growDunnup.”knew he wanted to be a comic by age 13 when he worked the Roll-A-Ball horse racing game. Customers competed against each other for prizes by bowling small balls into holes that advanced their miniature tin horse down a track. “I had a microphone like a carny, and I’d call each race,” he said. “I discovered I could make a crowd laugh. I’d heckle peo ple, and I’d get heckled too. I loved it.”

The bigger surprise is it’s coming from a Canadian urbanite who was barely 20 years old when she recorded it at a rustic studio in the Green Mountains. Exposed to bluegrass at an early age by a touring musician father, Bella White became a natural at the genre, and her tal ent continues to grow. She deftly draws from the hill country music that captivated her as a youngster, while staying aware of the dichotomy of it and her Calgary, Alberta, upbringing. “I was growing up going to public school in the city, taking the C train … this very urban kind of lifestyle,” White said by phone recently. “Then singing all of these really troublesome, ‘woe is me’ songs; I always found it really interesting.” That said, she can evoke the pain of her own lived experience. “Broke (When I Realized)” recalls the dissolution of her parents’ marriage when she was a child. It’s devastating, as she recounts overhearing her father deliver the news and thinking it’s a bad dream, only to have a dawning awareness: “I’d yet to fall asleep.”

A big fan of the country music history pod cast Cocaine & Rhinestones, White sees herself evolving beyond her bluegrass roots into some thing a bit more raucous. “In the fall, I plan on having some electric guitar and maybe some pedal steel coming into the mix,” she said. “There are so many other elements of country music that are not acous tic, that are electric … that’s a huge part of the history as well. It’s really fun to broaden your horizon and play with it all, you know?”

White then decamped to Nashville, keep ing a home base there while touring a lot. She’s opened for Sierra Ferrell, Molly Tuttle and oth ers, while becoming a steady presence on the festival scene. One day after her show at Ports mouth’s newly renovated Music Hall Lounge, she’ll be at the Green Mountain Bluegrass Fes tival in Manchester, Vermont. Lately she’s been “kind of just quietly” stay ing in Victoria, British Columbia. “I’ve lived in Nashville kind of on and off for the past three years or so, but have been mostly in Victoria these days,” she said.

The characters in many of White’s songs are on the move, a state that often mirrors her life. At 19, she came to Boston after hearing about the city’s roots scene. “I kind of just took a leap of faith,” she said. Settling into a dorm-like, musi cian-filled dwelling called Brighton House, she gained a Berklee education by osmosis, auditing the music college’s American Roots class and jamming whenever she could. Better still was hanging out with many others who were close to her in age. “I wasn’t real ly exposed to that growing up; I felt like I was always the youngest person at the jam,” White said. “I started to meet people through going to bluegrass festivals who went to Berklee…. I thought, how funny that there’s this mecca for old-time bluegrass and country music in Bos ton, of all places.” She hung around New England long enough to make her first serious record — a studio recording done in her teens remains unreleased — at the urging of old home country friend Patrick M’Gonigle. The multi-instrumentalist, known for his time in the Lonely Heartstring Band, produced, and led her to Guilford Sound, a facility built into a southern Vermont hill.

Fortune smiled when they entered the stu dio just as lockdown began in mid-March 2020. “We were in this little box in the woods, kind of oblivious to what’s going on,” she said. “It cre ated this really interesting dynamic … the best quarantine I could have ever asked for. Definite ly some divine intervention or something.”

Ahead of a run that continues through midSeptember, White released a new single. “The Way I Oughta Go” finds her voice with a Lydia Loveless edge as she rambles from city to city. It’s part of an upcoming album done with Jon athan Wilson, a producer who’s worked with Father John Misty, Billy Strings and White’s friend Erin Rae, among others.

White can also express romantic longing with startling maturity. “Now I’ve chased your love ’cause I thought it might feel woolen/like a dram on a damn cold winter’s night,” she sings on Just Like Leaving’s title track. The line, oftquoted by admiring writers and critics, would be at home on an early Joni Mitchell album. The likening delights White. “That means a lot, she’s my favorite,” she said, adding, “we’re both from the Prairies.”

It’s understandable to mistake Bella White’s debut album, Just Like Leaving, for a mid-20thcentury episode of Louisiana Hayride. With its layers of honey, hardscrabble and harmony, it’s a throwback that’s only missing the crackle and hiss of a big table radio.

Dear Car Talk: I love your show and even stopped by your garage in Cambridge when my daughter was in school at Harvard. She has a 2008 VW Jet ta Wolfsburg Edition with 53,000 miles. We bought it used in 2012 with 4,500 miles on it. She commutes seven miles round trip. Late ly, it’s having minor repair issues that have been costing us $500 to $1,500 every six to 12 months. She would like a hybrid but can’t afford $35,000 for a new car. When do we bite the bullet on a new car? — Chris With the average new car payment now well over $500 a month, you can do the math and see that even at the high end with a couple of thousand dollars a year in repairs you’re still coming out way head. And with a sevenmile round-trip commute, reliability isn’t a life-or-death matter for your daughter. If she commuted through Death Valley five days a week, it’d be a different story. With only 53,000 miles on the odometer, I don’t see any urgency in dumping this VW. If the car still works well and still meets her needs, I’d tell her to hang onto it for a few more years, and hope she lands a six-figure job in the meantime and lets you off the hook, Visit Cartalk.com.

I think the problem is the installers. The shock (or strut) is a key part of your suspension system. It’s a tube filled with hydraulic oil that has a piston in it. It works in conjunction with a coil spring that fits around it. The spring allows the car to absorb a bump, and the shock damp ens the motion of the spring to keep the car from bouncing for the next half mile after a bump.

Dear Car Talk: I’m a woman who does not know much about cars. I own a 2015 Chrysler 200 with about 95,000 miles on it. I recently had my rear shocks replaced. It was supposed to be a cou ple-hour job, but the shop ended up keeping it overnight because apparently the shocks they were installing didn’t have “bump stops” like my existing shocks did. They couldn’t find any, so they said that they were just going to reuse the old bump stops which they said would be fine. After getting my car back, I noticed that every time I hit a bump, I hear this metal clanking noise coming from the rear. I brought the car back, and they rechecked everything and determined that the new shocks must have been defective, so they replaced them again. The noise is still there when I go over any bump, even a small one. It sounds like met al on metal. I’m going to bring the car back again, but before I do, can you tell me what the problem is? Thanks. — Melissa

I think these guys screwed up the installa tion of your struts. When you replace just the strut, you have to remove the spring and shock mount, then put the whole assembly back together again. Rather than giving these guys a chance to screw this up again, I think you need a more idiot-proof solution. And there is one: a Quick-Strut. There are a number of aftermar ket companies that sell the entire contraption strut, coil spring and shock mount already assembled and ready to bolt on. You just attach the bottom of it to the car’s control arm and bolt the top of it to the inner fender. Each one costs about $120 for your car, which is a little more than just the shock.

Here’s what I suggest you say to the shop: “You guys get me two Quick-Struts and put them in. I’ll pay the difference in the cost of the parts, and you guys cover the labor.” I think that’s a fair way to finish this repair correct ly, and your car should ride quietly after that. Unless they leave a lunch pail in there.

Dear Car Talk: With gas prices on the rise, what are some sug gestions on how to extend gas mileage on a van? — Alyson Cut it in half? If you want marginally better gas mileage, here are some useful things you can do: Drive more slowly. Wind resistance is what kills your highway mileage. Wind resis tance increases by the square of your speed. So, it more than doubles between 55 mph and 80 mph. So, driving at 55 or 60 or even 65 instead of 75 will save you fuel. Accelerate gently. Accelerating takes much more fuel than maintaining your speed. And accelerating hard is the most fuel guzzling activ ity of all. What’s the rush? Accelerate gently and smoothly, and you’ll save fuel. Finally, be sure your tires are properly inflat ed. Underinflated tires increase drag, and you have to use more fuel to overcome that drag. So check your recommended tire pressure (not to be confused with maximum allowable tire pres sure on the sidewall). Keep your tires inflated to at least the recommended tire pressure. If you’re not bothered by a slightly firm er ride, you can even overinflate your tires by a few pounds. A tire that’s recommended to be filled to 30 psi will do fine at 32 psi or even 35 psi and will save you a bit more gas. Just don’t overdo it. Be sure to stay well below the max imum allowable tire pressure. And if you start getting welts on your head from hitting the dome light, back off by a few pounds, Alyson.

New Zealand’s Ministry for Environ ment recently proposed a plan to help curb the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, Reuters reported on June 8. The gist: charging farmers for cow burps. The country is home to 5 mil lion people, but twice that many cattle — and 26 million sheep, to boot — and almost half of its greenhouse gas emissions come from agri culture. Even so, agricultural gases have so far been exempted from the country’s emissions trading program. Well, your free ride could soon be over, Bessie: Starting in 2025, farmers would have to pay for their livestock’s emissions by volume. The proposal includes incentives for farmers to reduce gases through feed additives, and to use on-farm forestry to offset emissions.

Police were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m., where up to 20 family members abandoned the service to fight with each other. The 36-year-old brother got into a vehicle and “attempted to drive toward his sister in an aggressive way, but instead he struck another female and sent her to the hos pital with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy of the Richmond Police Department. He also managed to knock over headstones and vases and break a water main, causing the funeral plot to fill up with water. The coup de grace was knocking over the casket; fortunately, the deceased did not fall out. When the brother finally emerged from the car, someone hit him with a cane to sub due him.
