Goodbye, Snow Plow
How you can help endangered animals While many people would like to catch a glimpse of such a rare occurrence, Kennedy recommends that people who would like to see whales instead should come out one of the many whale watches in the area, including some with the Blue Ocean Society. “There is a 99-percent chance of seeing something that is actually alive,” she said. “If you are fascinated by whales, look us up — there are always volunteering opportunities.” Those seeking to learn more about the incident or to see photographs of Snow Plow can visit facebook.com/ nhmarinemammalrescue.

On the morning of June 27, the carcass of an 18-year-old endangered humpback whale named Snow Plow washed up on Ross Beach by the Rye Harbor State Park in Rye, N.H. The previous day, the whale had been spotted floating 20 miles off shore. According to the Seacoast Science Center, Snow Plow measured 45 feet in length and weighed approximately 40 tons.
The right response
The seacoast waters are full of marine life, and occasionally those animals will wash up on the shore. According to Jen Kennedy, executive director of the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, anyone who comes across a hurt or dead animal should keep their distance and immediately call the Marine Mammal Rescue team 24-hour hotline at 603-997-9448. “They should definitely call the hotline for the Marine Mammal Rescue Team at the Seacoast Science Center,” Kennedy

said. “Stay on the scene and give as much information as possible.’ According to Kennedy, the last recorded whale washing up onto a Seacoast beach was back in 1978 in Salisbury, Mass. The situation is a rare one. “Hopefully once in a lifetime,” she said.
Help for the future
For those who wish to learn more or volunteer, the Blue Ocean Discovery Center and the Seacoast Science both offer a wide range of information, interactive experiences and volunteer opportunities. These centers teach visitors the importance of marine life on the Seacoast. The Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation’s Discovery Center is at 170
Ocean Boulevard in Hampton, N.H., and is currently open daily. Admission to the center is $1, and children under age 2 get in free. Along with large touch tanks to experience marine life and to learn from maine life experts, there is a “take action” center where visitors can learn how to help protect marine life.Visit blueoceansociety.org or call 603-431-0260. Around 20 minutes north of Hampton Beach, the Seacoast Science Center sits in the scenic Odiorne Point State Park at 570 Ocean Boulevard, Rye, N.H. Admission to the state park is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 6 to 11. Admission to the Science Center is $10 for adults (13 and over); $8 for children (ages 3 to 12); $8 for seniors and military; free for children under 3 and for members. The center is open daily through October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors to the center will find touch tanks, exhibits on marine life study, fish exhibits and educators ready to teach visitors about the ocean and the creatures that call it home. The center is also home to the Marine Mammal Rescue Team.

Low-key night out
Many spots on the Seacoast feature a quieter atmosphere for people who want to go out but avoid loud restaurants or packed pubs. “Many people want to go somewhere that isn’t too loud, and if we are talking about live entertainment, [they want] something that’s not overpowering the scene,” said Brian Shea, owner of the Barley House in North Hampton, N.H. “Something a little more intimate. That’s what we do.” Shea said light, live acoustic music sometimes makes the best atmosphere for those looking to spend an intimate night with a significant other or to socialize with a couple friends. Restaurants such as the Barley House and CR’s the Restaurant feature piano and acoustic acts, just loud enough to keep your conversations private. “We call it the veil of privacy,” Shea said. “You want music loud enough to feel like your conversations are private

but hear each other and not have to talk too loud, but if it’s really quiet, you feel like everyone in the restaurant can hear everything that you are saying. It makes people uncomfortable.” Some places along Hampton Beach allow for a quiet evening dinner overlooking the water. Traci Shaake of the Boardwalk Pub and Grill describes what she thinks would be a perfect low-key night out. “I would say to come out on Wednesday night,” she said. “Come up, sit up on the balcony upstairs. Later at night, around 8:30 p.m., you can even watch the fireworks from the balcony while you eat.”

High-energy night out
Lynsey Paige, owner of the new nightclub Cloud 9 Bar and Grille in Hampton, describes the Seacoast as one of the best places to visit for a high-energy outing because there’s such a fun atmosphere surrounding beaches like Hampton. She has found that you can meet a diverse range of people and can experience a plethora of entertainment, dining and other activities — including her nightclub, which features a huge dance floor and entertainment every night, from live music to DJs to comedy shows. She said that some nights people prefer to let loose and have fun. “I think it’s necessary,” she said. “It’s important to go out with friends and have a social life. We spend so much time working our nine-to-fives and getting caught up in mundane tasks that it’s important to visit a place you know or that you like and know it’s going to be a good time socializing with friends or even meeting new ones.”

A little of both
Some spots, including the Boardwalk Pub and Grill, are places where you can choose either a quiet night or a highenergy night of live music and dancing. “We have two levels: the upper deck area overlooking the ocean, which is a little bit quieter,” Shaake said. “Downstairs, we have late night entertainment several nights a week from 10 p.m. to close.” Shaake said there are some days when people want to come to the beach to relax, enjoy the beach air and unwind. Sometimes, though, people want to let loose, sing loudly and have a good time. “That’s why we accommodate both,”

she said. “If you’re looking for a little more activity, downstairs we’ll have the crowd moving and grooving, adding some entertainment to the night.”
Where to go for a little of both
• Boardwalk Cafe and Pub (139 Ocean Boulevard, Hampton, N.H., 603929-7400, boardwalkcafe.net) features a menu of fresh seafood, fried seafood, pasta dishes, burgers, wraps, steak, chicken finger platters, salads and more along with a full cocktail and beer menu. With upper- and lower-level decks and live music on a variety of days throughout the week, the Boardwalk Cafe and Pub makes for a quiet end of a weekday night. The upper deck also makes for a prime spot to view the fireworks on Wednesdays and holidays at 9:30 p.m. Then, the lower deck’s late night entertainment makes for a more high-energy, dance-worthy place to let loose, have a drink and have fun. • The Seaglass Restaurant and Lounge (4 Oceanfront North, Salisbury, Mass., 978-462-5800, seaglassoceanside.com) is a place where guests can enjoy a meal by the sea with a few events sprinkled in throughout the week. The menu features choice New York sirloin, prime angus black burger, lobster mac &
cheese, Maine lobster, salads, soups and plenty of appetizers. Wednesday nights feature a special raw bar from 6 to 9 p.m. in the bar and lounge: oysters and clams cost $1 on this night, shrimp $2, with specialty cocktail and wine pairing available. Eric McFadden performs live
music in the lounge on Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m., bringing new hits and hits of yesterday. On Saturday nights the restaurant opens up the dance floor from 8 to 10:30 p.m., with popular party bands performing after the dinner hour.

For approximately 12 years now, movies at Hampton Beach have been an aprèsbeach mainstay for families. A group of mothers and grandmothers comprise the movie selection committee to decide upon kid-friendly films that beachgoers will be interested in. According to John Kane, the Hampton Beach Village District marketing manager, rather than establishing a set roster in case of last-minute changes or weather restrictions, the Village District instead posts each week’s movie choice on the Hampton Beach Village District website the Wednesday beforehand and then displays the same on a banner at the playground to give folks ample time to make arrangements. Held directly outside the playground, Kane said, the location “is nice for two main reasons. First, kids get to see it all lit up, and when they see something light up, they come to it. Also, it’s directly by a handicap ramp, which allows everyone in the family to be able to enjoy the show. The ramp is a 70-foot walkway onto the sand.” The high-def projector and upgraded speakers highlight “a big big screen,” said Kane. “The screen alone weighs 400 pounds. We used to have movie nights in someone’s back yard, just a few of us hanging out. We said, wouldn’t it be cool to do this on the beach for families? So we started showings by the island section on C Street, but there was lots of ambient light and cars and motorcycle traffic.” Once moved to the playground, which is darker and quieter, the event really attracted a following. “It blew up after that,” said Kane. “Envision five people looking at a monitor, now envision 20 people looking at that same monitor. You can’t. So we said, go big or go home, and we went big.” Kane said the investment was worth every penny to give children something they’ll always remember about their summer vacation. The movies are especially popular during the week of the Children’s Festival, said Kane. “We get between 400 and 700 people that week. It’s always a nice night; they love it. Kids have their blankets and

make pillows, they dance around and sing if they know the movie. And there’s always free popcorn.”
Prescott Park
Down the road in Portsmouth, another Monday night begins with families gathering around an outdoor high-def projector. In its sixth year of showcasing movies, hosted by Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, the 3.5acre Prescott Park is an arts haven on the seacoast. “We choose all the movies in the off-season, with the entire core staff collaborating for all family-friendly movies, based on popularity or score at the box office, to fit our specific demographic,” said Operations Manager Angela Greene. It kicked off its season June 27 with Star Wars: Episode VII playing on the stage’s giant screen, and summer offerings include newer films like Inside Out and Jurassic World and classics like Jaws and Gremlins. “People love it. Their favorite part seems to be the affordability,” said Greene. “It’s really expensive to go to the movies these days with, say, a family of five. This is a great alternative and a great way to connect with the community.” The proverbial doors open at 7 p.m. when you’re free to lay claim to your grassy nook. Or, if you’d prefer, tables and blankets can also be reserved online (costs range from $29 to $55). New this year families can reserve the “Best Seat in the House,” a sofa donated by Allen Wayside Furniture. “There’s plenty of room for everyone, but the Best Seat is just so a family can stroll in
and sit down in a spot that’s already laid out for them,” said Greene. In 2014, Prescott Park revamped its food stand into a full-service, on-site restaurant. “We invested in the kitchen for more healthful, locally sustainable choices. We still have all the faves and staples, but now we work with more local vendors. Instead of serving slushies, we have things like fresh lemonade or White Heron ice tea,” said Greene. Not to worry, there’s still plenty of oldfashioned candy and popcorn to accompany the movie. And while there’s a limited menu on movie nights, it’s open two to three hours before the film’s kickoff and then for the entirety of the show. As far as bringing in more independent films, they tried a few years ago previewing shorts before the main attraction. But, according to Greene, because the films already start at sunset, it became too long a night to remain within noise levels for the park. “We might try those types of films again in the future,” said Greene. “It’s in our queue, on our wish list.” Although noise considerations have recently been under dispute, said Greene, “we do get overwhelming support and positive feedback from the community. Any negative comments are very reduced. We definitely this year have a lot more local artists and community organizations involved. I’d like to highlight first and foremost that part of our mission.” All shows start at dusk, and while admission is free, donations are welcomes. Visit prescottpark.org for a complete schedule.

How long have you been in operation? We have been open since last year in June, so we are entering our second year. How was the first year? The first year was great. We had positive feedback from customers and were very pleased at how things went for us. How has business been this year? We opened in April and business is getting better each week with the warm weather. The last couple of weeks have been great. Things are really picking up. What do you carry in your store? We carry a diverse assortment of modern and vintage gifts. In our handmade section, we have local pottery, stained glass, sea glass items, art prints and pictures of Hampton Beach. Most of our soap and candles are New England made. Being a beachfront store, we have a good selection of beach toys and supplies. You can also find a vintage typewriter or collection of old Hampton Beach postcards. How big is your store? Our store is about 1,000 square feet. It is very bright and cheerful. Is this an industry you have been in before? This is our first gift store. Our idea is to bring a mix of modern, nautical and vintage gifts as well as locally made merchandise. We strive to provide a unique shopping experience for all of our customers.
108323
How did you come up with the name of your business? We liked the word ‘barn.’ We felt it incorporated a lot of what we are trying to do, and so our store is decorated with old bathtubs, doors and reclaimed nautical items. As for the name ‘Zac,’ we just came up with it and liked it, so we stayed with it.
Do you see a lot of locals as well as tourists here? Yes, we have a lot of both. During the off season, we participate in holiday fairs and festivals throughout the area. Last year, we stayed open till New Year’s Eve and we had a lot of locals shopping for Christmas presents. It was great.
What is your biggest business challenge? Our biggest challenge is getting people to know about our new gift store. This is our second year in this building that was formerly the Surf Hotel. Growing awareness about us is still important and something we will keep focusing on throughout this season.
What do you think about the Seacoast? Have you lived here long? I have been here for eight years and I love it here. I live at Hampton Beach year around and appreciate all the work that is being done to improve Hampton Beach. I also really appreciate the people and the sense of community here. I’m from a big city, so I can feel the difference in these local communities. It’s very nice to be part of the community.
Any big plans for the future? We want to continue to improve the business and bring the best mix of gifts. We are looking forward to a great second season here.

CAR TALK
Sad to say, superhighways are pretty much free-for-alls Dear Car Talk: I recently took a crosscountry trip, and drove on many different types of roads, from switchbacks in national parks to five- and six-lane highways. Those multiBy Ray Magliozzi lane highways were the scariest. Are there any guidelines out there for how to drive safely on these monsters? Is the topic covered in the newer drivers’ manuals, or is it just the free-for-all it appears to be? — Virginia It’s pretty much a free-for-all, Virginia. There are rules, but not everyone pays attention to them. You’ve got weavers, and pass-on-the-righters, and “Oh, #$8@, that’s my exit”-ers. What makes these roads most difficult is when you drive in areas of dense population, where there are multilane feeders coming onto the highways, and multilane exits leaving the highway on all sides. You can be in one of the right lanes, minding your own business, and suddenly you’re in an exit-only lane heading east to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. So our best advice is to pick one of the lanes in the middle, move along with the speed of traffic, and try to anticipate your exit
early enough to get over to the right safely. Using Google Maps or a built-in GPS can help you anticipate merges and exits. Or it can direct you to non-freeway routes if you’re really uncomfortable on them and don’t feel safe. But there’s nothing we can do to stop people from sliding in and out of your lane on a highway as they look to get home 0.4 minutes earlier. Looking to the future — and even the present — self-driving technologies probably are the ultimate answer. Even now, you can get things like adaptive cruise control, which will speed up and slow down your car to maintain a set distance from the car in front of you. You also can get lane-departure warning, to let you know when you’re drifting out of your lane, and blind-spot monitoring, to help you change lanes more safely. And that trend will continue, until you’ll be able to get on the highway, set the car on “drive me,” and watch “The Fast and the Furious 8” on the screen that drops down from your visor. Until then, find a spot in a middle lane, move at the speed of traffic and breathe. Dear Car Talk: The alternator died on our 2002 Honda Odyssey a few days before a planned
vacation. Our regular Honda service department had no appointments, so we took it to a mechanic recommended by a friend. With the alternator replaced, we set out on our trip ... only to have the car die completely 90 miles from home. While the dashboard instruments were failing and the car lost power, I was on the phone with the mechanic, who told me the alternator he installed must have been faulty, and that he would issue me a credit. Once towed home, we had our regular Honda service team replace the replacement alternator. Now the original mechanic is telling me he needs his defective part back (so HE can get a refund) in order to issue me my refund. Is this commonplace? Seems to me the mechanic should issue a full refund for the part and work done poorly. What do you advise? — Ellen Well, if I were advising mechanic No. 1, I’d tell him to give you all of your money back and reimburse you for the tow. It might not have been his fault that the part failed, but it severely inconvenienced you. And ethically, he’s responsible. So I would say regardless of whether you can return the old part at this point, he owes you your money back. But to answer your question, returning used parts is common. If we buy a part and it fails, the company we bought it from usually
wants proof that it failed; they want to know we’re not just trying to scam them out of an extra alternator. Plus, alternators, even failed alternators, are worth something. Many of the old alternator’s parts can be reused, so the promised return of the old, failed alternator often is factored into the purchase price of the new one. It sounds like there was a lack of communication between you and mechanic No. 1: He failed to tell you in advance that he needed the old part back, and you probably didn’t tell him that you were going to a different shop to have the repair redone. But given that you were 90 miles from home when the alternator died, you would have been perfectly justified in having it done then and there by whatever shop was open. So, given the inconvenience to you and the lack of clear communication from him, mechanic No. 1 should just suck it up and give you a refund and consider it a cost of doing business. And if he has a good relationship with his parts supplier, he should be able to get the supplier to issue him a credit for the bad alternator — since it cost him his labor time and a customer, too. Inside the culinary canvas of Chez Boucher in Hampton, food is your medium. It’s a full-service restaurant at Savory Square Bistro, offering three-course luncheons and gluten-free fare on top of the regular menu. It’s a fully licensed and certified professional program offering state-of-the-art career training. It’s a foodie’s dream come true of well-thought-out classes for a weeklong series, a day course, or a few hours of cooking on the weekend. No matter how long you stay, your culinary journey can take you from Ireland or the south of France to the local shores of the Seacoast, all washed down with a fine vintage. “The Couples’ Night Out is a wine-food pairing event, probably the most popular course,” according to Ron Boucher, owner of Chez Boucher, which opened its doors in 2003. About once a month on a Sunday afternoon, 12 couples enjoy a four-course meal driven by a choice of wine, based on recommendations made by the makers’ representatives or the chef’s travels. Once Boucher knows which wine will be uncorked, he looks up the tasting notes from the vineyards and applies the wine to each course. “In the area of wine, we figure out what food best goes with the wine choices. Couples’ Night Out is part learning, part socializing. With 12 couples, half will be working with the food while the others watch, and then take turns. I speak to the whole group throughout the time. They sit down to a four-course meal with wines after the cooking, so it makes for a very educational experience,” Boucher said. And Boucher is an extremely dedicated chef. “Almost always I do all the wine dinners. You’re charged with putting together a menu, and I think chefs should do their own prep and pre-prep for their own material. It’s more fluid to do it yourself, rather than to just have someone say, ‘This is what we’re doing’ and have to follow that lead,” Boucher said.
Photos courtesy of Chez Boucher.
Other offerings include topic-specific classes on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., such as the recent cake-decorating or butchering and barbecue courses. “Those classes alternate, intertwining baking and cooking. The majority, eight out of 12, are cooking-related, and the other four are baking. There are four-hour classes, and then mini workshops, which are two-hour classes,” Boucher said. In true Seacoast community fashion, Chez Boucher partners with local businesses to host events and is open to requests for special classes of interest. “We have a Cooking with Friends event at the Victoria Inn — those have been really popular. Another option is to have private classes and dinner parties at your house or at the inn,” Boucher said. From the expertise of a seasoned chef, what accounts for today’s popularity in culinary pursuits is “definitely the TV shows,” Boucher said. “That’s one main reason for the increased interest in the culinary arts.” Another reason is today’s trend toward fresh, unprocessed food. “People realize that making it from scratch is healthier,” he said. Recently returned from his annual trip to Europe, Boucher appreciates traveling to discover new wines, new foods and new methods. “We’ve been going to Italy and France annually for about 12 years, and this year I had a lot of requests to go to Ireland, so we went to Ireland,” he said. “We fashioned three classes at Michelin-starred restaurants. The fact that some people may
still think that the food there is deplorable couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s a real French cuisine infiltrating Ireland, where the chefs have been formally trained in French cuisine, [and] everything is fresh. I don’t think you’ll find a place that’s more farm-to-table than in Ireland.” Boucher always creates a class from a combination of the food journeys. “I am putting on the calendar some type of instruction replicating the classes in Ireland. Look for that coming soon,” Boucher said. According to Boucher, his goal as a chef was always to teach. “I ran two separate restaurants for 20-some years, and after that I became an adjunct at UNH for three or four semesters but couldn’t get a full-time opportunity. That’s when I decided to open my own culinary training program in 2007,” he said. And life has a way of coming full-circle. “I was recently asked to come back to UNH in the spring of 2015, and halfway through that semester I was offered a fulltime faculty position at the Peter T. Paul School of UNH,” Boucher said While the chef admitted it’s a balancing act with teaching full-time and operating an award-winning kitchen, he makes the most of his summer. “We also run an apprenticeship program, where once they’re through with the professional program, we ask them to stay on with the bistro for six months. It’s a win-win situation because they get to hone their skills, and it’s all hands-on,” Boucher said.

THINK PINK!
AT HAYSEED
What are the benefits of having a restaurant and brewery so close together? There are a lot of benefits, not the least of which would be that [the Hayseed] is a wonderful place to showcase the beer that we brew. Smuttynose has its roots in brewpubs — we are a brewery first and foremost — so it’s nice to have a place on site to showcase that. I think the sort of secondary benefit, by virtue of having a talented chef, would be elevating both food and beer to provide people with a great and memorable experience when they come to visit. It also gives people a reason to come back and see us. We think we have a really lovely farm here. The setting is pleasant and we love it when people come out. What is your personal favorite dish at Hayseed at the moment? The King Oyster Mushroom Dish is a personal favorite. I love mushrooms and we get them from the New Hampshire Mushroom Company. Our chef, Dez Smith, has been geeked out about all the mushrooms coming out of there. The way he slices and prepares them, they look like scallops and have that texture almost. It’s a fun presentation with sweet potato puree and farro. In an industry where you drink a lot of beer, it’s a pretty healthy recipe to eat. It ticks off a lot of boxes for me.

How long has the Hayseed been open? We have been open for about a year and a half from back in February of 2015 and it has been great. Anytime you open a new restaurant, it takes time for you to find your feet. The response has been great. What makes the Hayseed unique? It’s a really unique location and space, offering a unique experience for people who come and visit. We have a wonderfully talented chef who is incredibly skilled and also passionate about incorporating local ingredients and doing incredible things with them. ... We change our menu seasonally to take advantage of whatever is coming out fresh that season. We also have an outdoor beer garden with nice patio tables and a small fire pit so you can have a beer and chill out even when you’re not doing the full dining experience. We also have daily happy hour specials.

The Hayseed is open every day except Tuesday for lunch and dinner. The Scene sat down with J.T. What craft beer-food pairing recommendation would you make? There are so many different ways to go, so many different beers and dishes. Honestly, the Schnitzel and Vunderbar Pilsner. The Schnitzel is so delicious topped with gravy and homemade lardons. The Pilsner has a delicious crisp that pairs well with everything on the plate; I can’t get enough. I love the richness of the pair. But our staff is really talented. So we try to pair everything on the menu, including our daily specials.

Craft on the coast
Festival features creative microbrews of the Seacoast By Angie Sykeny news@seacoastscene.net
Meet the Seacoast’s craft brewers and get a taste of their brews at the second annual Seacoast Microbrew Festival, which has been expanded to two days this year. Hosted by 7th Settlement Brewery, the event takes place Saturday, July 9, and Sunday, July 10, at Henry Law Park, along the Cochecho River bank in Dover. There will be 17 breweries present, split into two tents with food vendors, live music and lawn games in between. Event coordinator Kate Sanders said the festival is about more than just tasting the brews; it’s a chance for people to meet with the brewers directly. “It’s not volunteers or outside people pouring the drinks,” she said. “It’s the brewers and brewery workers who actually do the craft and know about it. It’s very interactive and is really focused on highlighting the breweries and brewers themselves.” There is no limit on tastings, and each attendee will receive a 4-ounce Seacoast Microbrew Festival tasting glass to use for sampling the brews at each brewery table. VIP ticketholders will be granted access to the festival one hour before it opens for general admission and will receive a logoed Stanley stainless steel pint glass on their way out. Sanders said that while there will certainly be some traditional and popular brews, many of them will be new and unique. “A lot of these are smaller breweries, so we see a lot of test batches and some really interesting brew flavors that you don’t usually see,” she said. “The atmosphere allows brewers to have more creativity with their recipes because their fans are flexible and like to try a lot of different brews instead of just looking for a certain kind or brand.” The combination of creative freedom and camaraderie among Seacoast microbrewers has led to another growing trend: brew collaborations. “The craft breweries around here are so tight-knit,” Sanders said. “We definitely see a lot of breweries working together and collaborating on recipes. Hopefully we’ll see some of those collaborations at the brewfest.” In addition to the breweries, Seacoast food vendors will be onsite, including Portsmouth Catering Co., Flatbread Co., 3 Brothers Marketplace, Juice Burger food truck and The Kitchen’s mobile

The lighthouse is an iconic symbol — for centuries, artists have interpreted it in paintings, photos, sculptures and wall calendars — and in New Hampshire, people are willing to fork over $4 to walk the 44 steps and climb the seven-rung ladder to the top of the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. Eric Jay Dolin, author of Brilliant Beacons: A History of the American Lighthouse, gave a little insight to the lure of the American lighthouse during a phone interview last week — and he’ll do so again as part of the Tory Hill Authors Series at the Warner Town Hall Saturday, July 9, and at the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse Saturday, July 10. “Often, they’re gorgeous towers in the most wonderful, beautiful, dramatic, aweinspiring locations,” Dolin said. “But I also think there’s something really romantic about them; people really idolize the history of them. The real life of a historic lighthouse keeper was often downright boring and monotonous, but there were a lot of beautiful, exciting things about working in a lighthouse.” Dolin, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, is the author of 12 books on a variety of American history topics like trade, whaling and wildlife, but his schooling was in environmental policy and management. He got his undergraduate degree at Brown, his master’s at Yale, and his Ph.D. at MIT, where his dissertation focused on the role of the courts in the Boston Harbor cleanup. He writes because he’s curious. “I’m writing these books for me. I’m sort of an average reader,” Dolin said. “Every single book is about a topic I don’t know much about before I start working.” It was his editor who pitched the topic, but before pursuing the subject seriously, he did some reading. He’d never written about lighthouses before and knew almost nothing about them but found great personalities and dramatic events in American lighthouse history. “I was surprised to learn how important of a role lighthouses played in the American Revolution and the Civil War, when lighthouses became pawns in a battle fought over on either side,” Dolin said. Dolin liked reading and writing about the lighthouse keepers who risked their lives to save others, pointing to Ida Lewis as an
example. Lewis, the appointed keeper of Lime Rock Light in Newport from 1857 until 1873, took over for her father, who became ill shortly after starting the job, and saved 18 lives throughout her career. She was one of many female lighthouse keepers at the time. Usually they became keepers because, like Lewis, they fell into the situation: They were married to or daughters of a keeper who died or became ill. It was a respectable position, and Dolin said women who took it on were almost always paid the same men were. “In one sense, it wasn’t the lighthouse establishment that was so well ahead of its time in women’s equality. It was understood the best person to step into the job was the wife or daughter who may have been helping the husband or father for years running and maintaining the lighthouse,” Dolin said. Just the same, it was important to the suffragette movement later on — people like Elizabeth Cady Stanton looked to some of the female keepers as examples of women who could do the job just as well as men. Dolin said he also liked writing about the technological changes and the political battles over modernizing America’s lighthouse system, and about the dramatic stories surrounding the hurricane of 1938. At one time, there were more than 1,000 lighthouses in the United States. Today there are about 700, and Dolin mentions about 160 in his book. Around half are still open to the public. For research, Dolin devoured all the texts he could find, some original from the 1800s and 1900s. By the time he turned in the manuscript a year ago, he’d collected 20 binders that held 100 pages of copied material from the internet or texts from the Massachusetts Historical Society and Harvard University library and 80 used books. Since the book’s spring 2016 release, he’s received a lot of demand for speaking events. “I think people innately know they’re important structures in the history of our country,” Dolin said. POP CULTURE BOOK REVIEW
Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren (Alfred A. Knopf, 282 pages) The next time you’re waiting in line at the DMV, give a thought to the lotus seed that waited 2,000 years to germinate. Discovered in a peat bog in China in the 1950s, the seed was coaxed into life by scientists who were astonished to find that a seed can keep hope alive not just for hundreds of years, but for thousands. “A seed is alive while it waits. Every acorn on the ground is just as alive as the three-hundred-year-old oak tree that towers over it,” explains geobiologist Hope Jahren in her memoir and occasional meditation, Lab Girl. Take that bit of information with you on your next trek through the woods, and watch where you step, lest you kill the hopes of the hundreds of seeds underfoot. Jahren, as eloquent a champion of plants as the soldier-poet Joyce Kilmer, knows all about the secret lives of lotus flowers, blue spruce and kudzu, and her observations provide a fitting start to the growing season. In addition, she’s a sympathetic compatriot for anyone who’s ever loved a tree.
Plants outlive and outnumber animal life on Earth; despite our passion for cutting them down, there are 200 trees for every person in the U.S. The fact that anything grows at all is wondrous, given the odds. More than half of all seeds will die before they can sprout. Among trees that defiantly break through soil and climb toward light, 95 percent will not live through the first year. In climates like New Hampshire’s, where “the whole trick of survival is not freezing to death,” it’s even more daunting. “Remaining stationary and naked outside in the below-freezing weather for three months is a death sentence for almost every living thing on Earth, except for the many species of trees that have been doing it for a hundred million years or more,” Jahren writes. That’s because every cell in a tree is “basically just a box of water” that expands as it freezes — which is why a stalk of celery wilts if your refrigerator is too cold. Jahren’s contributions to science are widely known. She’s the recipient of three Fulbright Awards and is a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories. She has done research at the University of California-Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins University. Jahren makes her field more accessible, arguing that you don’t need to be good
at math or chemistry to be a scientist any more than you need to know how to knit to be a housewife. But we already have YouTube to make complex scientific principles understandable and engaging; just Google Vsauce. What she contributes to the literary table is a compelling love story — remarkably, one that is utterly platonic. The lab girl, see, had a lab partner, and they’ve worked together since 1994. Bill Hagopian is his name, although in Lab Girl he’s just Bill, the Clyde to Jahren’s Bonnie, the scientist who worked tirelessly in the lab at nights while she worked days, who traveled the country — and, in fact, the world — with her, collecting moss that would be confiscated by airport security in Ireland, outfitting labs with treasures from the Salvation Army thrift store, dancing on glaciers. Perhaps most gratifying is that these two highly trained scientists, whose everyday conversations are over the heads of most college graduates, liked to kick back late at night with a bag of frozen cheeseburgers from McDonald’s (they determined that freezing didn’t much change the consistency) and watch Jerry Springer. If that isn’t love, what is? Jahren does fall in love, in the traditional way, with another scientist she doesn’t meet until page 205, and not to take any-

thing away from her husband, Clint, and the child the two had, for a while, Clint seems like a fact getting in the way of a good story. (Although the meeting between Bill and Clint does give some much-needed tension to the book, even though Jahren and Bill didn’t even so much as hug until after the birth of her child, 11 years after they met at Berkeley.) Jahren writes beautifully and employs a smart structure in Lab Girl, flipping between short essays on plant life and autobiographical chapters that take her from childhood in Minnesota to her struggles with depression to the birth of her child. Or, as she puts it, during 20 years together, she and Bill have “gotten three degrees, worked six jobs, lived in four countries and traveled in 16 more, ended up in the hospital five times, owned eight old cars, driven at least 25,000 miles, put a dog to sleep, and produced roughly sixty-five thousand carbon stable isotope measurements.” “Along the way, we also managed to become adults without ceasing to be children,” Jahren says, revealing part of why the scientists’ relationship is so appealing. Bill has told her he will never read the book because “he can damn well sit down and remember the last twenty years without any help from me.” She wrote it, anyway, because some love stories demand to be told. B+ — Jennifer Graham

There’s a reason life and death metaphors abound in standup comedy — it’s a risky calling. Funny can’t be faked, and there’s no auto-tune for a sense of humor. Alone in the spotlight, a comedian either kills it or dies. Smart comics start small, like Josh Day did the first time he worked for an audience. Four years ago, he brought five minutes of material to the open mike night at The Winner’s Circle in Salisbury. The Wednesday night gathering is a favorite for aspirants looking to test the praise of friends who tell them they’re funny enough for Conan or Late Night. It’s also a place where seasoned comics come to try out new material in a friendly setting, as Day would soon learn. He wrote his name on the sign-up sheet, then waited nervously. But just as Day thought his moment was coming, national star Juston McKinney was instead called to the stage. “I’m hearing, ‘All right, the next guy has been on the Tonight Show and had his own Comedy Central special’ and I’m thinking, that is definitely not me,” Day said in a June telephone interview. “It blew my mind! I was already having a panic attack — then I have to follow the funniest guy in New England.” Day decided to head into the crowd and watch the veteran comic’s set, where he made his first mistake. “I was so dumb back then,” he said. “I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to sit up front.” McKinney began setting up a joke that hinged on a phrase consisting of the word “whiskey” and the nickname for a man named Richard. When he asked if anyone knew what he meant by the expression, Day naively nodded that he did. In an instant, the wholesome comic began to “work blue” — with Day as Josh Day w/ Irene Fagan Merrow

the bit’s linchpin. His punchline echoed The Aristocrats, the 2005 movie about a famously raunchy routine discussed and retold by dozens of comics over the years. “It was such a dirty joke, and I did not expect it to come from him,” Day said. “I’m thinking, great, now I have to go up on stage after that.” Miraculously, Day recovered sufficiently to fumble his way through and emerge with enough confidence to try again. He also learned one of the first rules of the trade, turning his ill-timed interaction with McKinney into an asset — what comics call “crowd work” — but in reverse. “It actually worked out,” he said. “I walked on and said, ‘They introduced me as Josh Day; but in most circles, I go by ‘Whiskey D***.’ That was the first thing I ever said on a stage.” The Seacoast native has come a long way since that fateful night and worked up a lot more material — enough to headline. Day is also a budding promoter, booking comedy at Portsmouth’s Birdseye Lounge and Stone Church in Newmarket. It’s at the latter venue that Day will top the bill for his first time, on July 8. “I have 45 minutes now,” he said. “The
longest I’ve ever done is 55, but almost all of that was ad libbed; this time, I’m writing it all down.” The Stone Church is a monthly showcase with some of the character of an open mic. Along with Day and Irene Fagan Merrow, four comics will do short sets: Sam Bennett, Ryan Chani, Ian Clark and John Sucich. Following his baptism under fire, McKinney and Day became friends. They carpool to gigs together on occasion, and Day has opened shows for the Maine comic. On a recent Monday night, the two were in Portland, Maine; McKinney was headlining, while Day hoped to grab some stage time. McKinney is one of comedy’s allaround nice guys, and he’s helped many up-and-comers like Day. McKinney, however, has no recollection of Day’s Winner’s Circle debut, or the raucous joke that nearly pushed the young comic’s panic attack over the edge. “After we became friends, I said to him, ‘Do you remember when we met?’ and I reminded him about the story,” Day said. “He told me, ‘That’s terrible — I’m so sorry!’ It was quite surreal to get bumped by him the first time I was ever to go on stage.”

In May, an apparently devout woman named Katy Vasquez of Winter Park, Florida, posted a sincerely written entry on Facebook (and told Huffington Post in an interview) that she had just seen a “sign from God” a cross as a smudge in her infant’s soiled diaper. “I prayed to God for a sign that everything would be OK,” she gushed to the reporter. “It might not be the prettiest sign, but he put it where he knew I’d see it.” (Hence, News of the Weird retires the recurring theme begun in the 1980s with Jesus in a rust stain on an abandoned refrigerator.)
Right here in New Hampshire
eye infections and needing animal blood for a serum that might save the eyes. The call was “answered” by the rescue dog Jemmie. After Jemmie’s blood “donation” (not a transfusion, since the blood went only to make the serum), vets reported saving one eye of one of the kittens, earning Jemmie a “special” reward. (Said vet Sarah Varanini, “There’s nothing in life [Jemmie] likes more than kittens.”) • Even though extraordinarily rare, two people recently reported foreign accent syndrome after their brain traumas apparently caused crossing of cranial “wires.” (1) “J.C.,” 50, was described in the journal Cortex as an energetic Italian who, after a brain injury, inexplicably speaks constantly in “emphatic, error-prone French.” (2) Six months ago, Lisa Alamia of Rosenberg, Texas, awoke from surgery inexplicably speaking in a British accent (particularly confusing her family and friends since she previously spoke not so much “English” as “Texan”). Medical experts cited by CBS News reported that fewer than 100 people worldwide have ever been diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome.
To their surprise, Sophie Scafidi and friends, on an outing in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, in June, learned that a man spying on and photographing them through a camera lens hidden in a Gatorade bottle painted black was not violating any law. Although the lens was rigged to the man’s phone, which contained beach photos, including some of children, police informed Scafidi that even surreptitious photography in sleazy circumstances, as long as done on public property, was legal and that the only law broken in the incident Redneck chronicles At the monthly pro wrestling show in was by the person who snatched the “camRinggold, Georgia, in June, Patricia Crowe, era” to show police. 59, apparently having had enough of “bad guy” Paul Lee, reportedly jumped into Fine points of the law A court in Canberra, Australia, found the ring to rescue “good guy” Iron Mann, Wesley King not guilty of a 2014 burglary whom Lee had “tied up” and been beating despite his DNA’s having been found at with a chair. First, she cut Mann loose with the crime scene on underpants containing her knife and then pulled a loaded handhis fresh feces. Wrote Chief Justice Hel- gun on Lee (and was eventually arrested en Murrell in June: There is a “reasonable by sheriff’s deputies). Crowe admitted that
Lee’s earlier “mean” banter with ringside patrons had unnerved her, especially when he told Crowe to sit her “toothless self back down.”
Compelling explanations
• A former Malaysian legislator (Mr. S. Manikavasagam), who was charged in June with taking a bribe worth about US$7,300 from a contractor, claimed innocence that somehow a package of money was thrown into his car as he drove down a city street. • A woman in Goldsboro, North Carolina, acquired a freezer from her neighbor several months ago but said she hadn’t looked inside until May, when she discovered parts of a dead body (and called authorities). She said the neighbor had discouraged her from opening the freezer because “a church” was using it as a “time capsule.”
Government in action
The Illinois secretary of state stopped mailing reminders about license-plate renewal deadlines in October because his office said the state could no longer afford the $450,000-a-month mailing cost (thus saving taxpayers $3.6 million so far). The Belleville (Illinois) News-Democrat and The Associated Press reported in June that the state has collected (not surprisingly!) $5.24 million more in the resultant “late fees” people had to pay on their licenseplate renewals than it had collected the year before the reminders stopped. (A proposal for a 30-day grace period for expired plates failed in the just-concluded legislative session.) Visit weirduniverse.net.
possibility” that the burglar was someone else who was wearing unwashed underwear that had previously been worn by the accused. (Thus, she found King not guilty of all charges.)
Weird science
• Medical Daily, in a May review of recent cases, noted progress in dealing with Cotard’s syndrome, a disorder that leads patients to believe they have no blood or vital body parts or feeling as if they are dead (or may as well be). Studies show one in about 200 psychiatric patients exhibit the symptoms, and one doctor, describing a brain scan of his patient, said brain activity resembled that of a person in a coma or under anesthesia. Cotard’s, also known as walking corpse syndrome, leads patients to thus avoid eating or bathing (asking themselves, why bother?). • The Sacramento (California) Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals put out a call for help in April after stray kittens were found dumped in a yard, with only two still alive but nearly blind with
