music and food, and it’s just a beautiful opportunity to explore the seacoast and do something early evening.” For car enthusiasts looking for more fun, weekly cruise nights are happening at HotRod City in Dover every Thursday night from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The HotRod City complex, located at 99 Oak Street, includes a HotRod shop, a motorcycle shop, a diner and a music shop, most of which stay open during the cruise nights. According to Sean LaRose, the event organizer, they accept all sorts of cars at their cruise nights, so they end up with quite a mix of vehicles, and usually about 30 to 50 or more cars. LaRose works to create a low key, cruise-in atmosphere with these events. “You just pull in and park and hang out,” LaRose said. There is no admission fee for the Thursday Night Cruises, and raffles and some giveaways are included throughout the night. LaRose noted that 1950s and ’60s music also plays to fit the cruise night environment. — Rebecca Walker

Sound Decision will be the band featured at this month’s Cool Cars and Concerts on the Common in Hampton Falls, happening on Thursday, Aug. 24, at the town common. From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., guests are invited to dance and listen to “car culture” music from a professional band with cool cars as the backdrop. Steve Sabatini, the car show organizer, shared that this event does not just display show cars, rather anything that is a “cool car” is welcomed. “It could have been something that you grew up with, it could have been your first car, it’s just a cool car, not necessarily show cars,” Sabatini said. Participants can sign up their cars in advance if they have special requests about things like parking, but Sabatini also welcomes people to just show up with their cars. The whole event is sponsored by local businesses, so there is no set admissions fee but donations are appreciated. This “cool cars” night was originally meant as a one-time, spontaneous theme backdrop to the weekly concert on the commons event, but it received such positive reactions that it is continuing. According to Sabatini, this event is also a sort of revival of the cruise-in car show that took place in Hampton Falls many years ago. “We had such overwhelming positive response from as far away as Manchester, Concord, Boston — people really liked the venue,” Sabatini said. “It’s different in that it’s sort of a country club kind of environment, it’s in the grass, there’s live

Fishin g for fu in the At lantic n and , f or pr By R ofit ob Le vey

When you think of the Seacoast of New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, you may think of the beaches and the boardwalks and the not-too-deep part of the ocean — but beyond where you can safely swim is a whole other part of the Atlantic that fishermen explore every day. Some are commercial fishermen, some take passengers on charter tours and some are just out there having fun. Here’s a look at what it’s like to go deep sea fishing off the coast, plus how you can give angling a try.

Enjoyed by thousands of area visitors and locals each year, deep sea fishing is a pastime that is synonymous with the Seacoast, and anyone can give it a try on a charter fishing tour. Al Gauron’s Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching in Hampton got its start taking locals and tourists out on recreational fishing tours with just one small boat in 1934. Al Gauron may have passed away, but the family still runs the operation and now has two small and two large boats for charter fishing tours. Their largest boat is the 90-foot Northern Star. The boat travels at speeds of up to 18 knots — nearly 21 miles — per hour. “It has a pulpit extending off the front — people [say it feels] like it flies off the ocean,” said co-owner April Nicoll. Nicoll said that once passengers board the boat, deckhands give out fishing rods and provide rod and reel lessons. “We have a lot of first-timers and a lot of children on our four-hour trips,” she said. Nicoll said fishing is an experience they want to share with others. “This is such a classic hobby — we want kids to come in here 2, 3 and 4 years old,” she said. “We hire the kinds of people who want to help people. Our deckhands are here seasonally. They are

teachers, policemen, firefighters. They want to teach people how to fish. Once you know what you are doing, it’s a free hobby.” When Captain Don Taylor of Lily B II Charters in Rye Harbor takes people out on his boat, he first explains some of the differences between fishing in the ocean and fishing in freshwater. “You have to drop your line down 200 feet,” he said. “You think you have a bite, but it is just hitting the bottom.” Noting he prefers to take people out when the waters are not choppy, Taylor makes a great effort to ensure everyone is comfortable on his boat. If folks start to feel sick, he will provide ginger or a wintergreen Life Saver, which usually “bring people out of it.” One of his favorite memories on a charter fishing tour revolves around his experience with a family of five from Oklahoma. Acknowledging the ocean was “a little wavy” that day, he explained a variety of things to the family, including how to handle the poles, etc. “I started out by showing the two older kids,” he said. “They tried and got some fish. The whole time, though, the littlest one, a girl, was watching me.” She was, in fact, paying attention more intently to him than anyone else, which was evident after he provided her 10

“She dropped it down 200 feet and I held the butt end,” he said. “She flipped the right lever to let it stop — and 90 seconds later, she said, ‘I think I have a bite.’” Asking her to pull it up, he said the girl reeled up the line herself to discover “a nice big haddock there.” “It was such a great experience for that little girl,” he said. “That little girl will always want to go fishing — that’s the kind of fishing trip I like to do.” Cory Gauron of Steaker Charters in Hampton, who grew up working in his family’s business, Al Gauron’s Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching, said one of his specialties is teaching people who have previously never fished how to experience success out on the water the very first time. “When I can show people how to fish the way I know how to fish and take them to my spots, they are really successful,” he said. Like Taylor, Gauron enjoys taking families out on the water. “We have a lot of fun with kids in the boat,” Gauron said. “We can cater a trip to them. I enjoy seeing kids having a blast.”

The fish you’ll find

Gauron said the chances that kids have fun are augmented by targeting mackerel. “There are a lot of them and they are easy to catch,” he said. “We can fish for five minutes and catch 17 fish. It keeps the kids entertained.” Nicoll said they also provide opportunities for people to catch mackerel, which she described as “super fun to catch.” “You don’t need a lot of skill or patience,” she said. “You let your line go out of sight while the mates chum the waters. No bait is needed.” She cited haddock and pollock as their main targets on fishing charter tours. Taylor said he also takes passengers out for mackerel, haddock and pollock as well as for striped bass. “They are a good fighting fish,” he said of striped bass. “They are a lot of fun.” Gauron said striped bass remain their “bread and butter.” Added attractions

Passengers often see dolphins from the double deck of their big boats, Nicoll said. This year, people just might see several varieties of whales, which she noted have been swimming close to shore this year. She said that minke whales, which are larger than dolphins, have been particularly easy to see on fishing trips. “They usually never jump out of the water, but this year they are and nobody knows why,” she said. “It’s pretty neat.”

“That is the game fish,” he said. “In the last few years, it has really taken off. We use mackerel to bait them.” Noting they take people out for striped bass on their smaller 35-foot boats, Nicoll said they are the ideal fish due to the fight in them. “They are sport fish for sure,” she said. “They are so fun to catch. It feels like you are fighting to reel in the fish. You don’t have to go that far out, but there are secret spots farther out.”

The uncatchables

Taylor said people are unlikely to catch any bluefish. “Bluefish used to be here right outside the harbor, but there has not been one in five years,” he said. He attributed the lack of bluefish to several factors, with one being the influx of tuna fish in local waters. “Bluefish go where the tuna is not,” he said. “I don’t think there is a decline in the amount of certain fish. I believe it has to do with the environment and how nature is making the waters move around. I do see a change from what I caught in the ’80s and ’90s, but I have seen things come back, too. The currents change and warmer waters come in close — it could stay like that for a couple years. Eventually, the warmer water won’t come in. I think that is what is happening this year.” Perhaps one of the biggest changes in recent years is that cod has now been banned for recreational fishermen. 12

10 The ban went into effect just a few weeks ago. Taylor says it has already negatively affected his business. “I have already had a couple fishing trips cancel out because of the ban,” he said. “It’s been tough.” Gauron said that based on his experiences, cod still appear to be plentiful in the waters. “I personally feel that there are tons of cod in the ocean,” Gauron said. “Regula-

Gauron acknowledged that every boat captain has favorite places to fish. He believes, however, the key is a combination of technique and location. “I go to the places where how I know how to fish works,” he said. “If I go to another place and use the same techniques, it may not work in that other spot. … Where I go works for what I do.” He said he feels especially comfortable taking people in by rocky spots, which is where he tends to find striped bass. He noted that some of his techniques harken back to his days in Key West, Florida, where lived for several years. “I started out as a deckhand down there and ran some party boats,” he said. “I also ran a ferry for the National Park Service at Dry Tortugas National Park. … I learned some things down there that I can apply here.” As for how late into the season fish can still be caught along the shores of the Seacoast, Gauron said he normally “packs it up” by Halloween. “You have to go out 20-plus miles to catch anything,” he said. “The wind is blowing and the water is really rough.” Gauron personally still finds a way to go fishing. “I ice fish and jump down onto Long Island and Rhode Island,” he said. “I find a way.”

tions won’t let us catch cod — even with a baited hook. We have had trips this year where six people threw back over 100 codfish on an eight-hour trip.” Gauron noted other recreational fishing restrictions too, which include 12 haddock caught each time out on the water this year as opposed to last year’s allowed total of 15.

The commercial side

With hundreds of restaurants located just minutes from the ocean, commercial fishermen have no shortage of eager customers looking for the freshest catch. A cooperative of fishermen with boats in Seabrook, Hampton, Rye Harbor and Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire Community Seafood sells to nearly a dozen restaurants. According to General Manager Andrea Tomlinson, business has been great. “We go into farm-to-table and local food restaurants and explain to them what we do and how our work supports local fishermen,” she said. “We offer a wholesale price and deliver it right to their doorstep.” Referring to this component of their business as a Restaurant Supported Fishery, she described it as similar to “a farm share for restaurants.” “Each restaurant gets a weekly share of the catch of the day within 48 hours after being caught,” she said. “I let them know what it will be in the beginning of the week. They can buy it whole or filleted. Whole is one price across the board and filleted is based on volume.” Some local commercial fishermen simply work for themselves, including Jamie of Two in the Bush. Joined by Shannon LaMonica, who runs the business side of the operation, Jamie (who did not want his last name used) is exclusively 16

For those who make a living out on the water, it is not really a job at all, but rather a way of life. “I’ll be honest with you, it’s not an option for him — it’s really not,” LaMonica said of Jamie. “His mom tells this story about him being 3 years old on the front steps of his house, holding a willow-tree branch and casting it onto the front yard. I believe that story. … I don’t even know if he wants to do it. He has to do it. … It makes him happy, beyond happy. It’s who he is.” Gauron’s love of the water was instilled in him at a young age by his grandfather Al. “He got us all involved in it,” he said. “It was pretty cool to be able to jump on a boat and catch giant fish all the time when I was 8 or 9 years old. That’s an experience some have never done even once and I would do it a hundred times in a summer. I’ve tried not to take it for granted.” For Taylor, his charter fishing business reflects a lifelong love of fishing as well. “I have always fished recreationally or with a bunch of guys after work before I

retired,” he said. “I started my business when I retired and have enjoyed doing it.” Rocky Gauron, captain of one of the boat’s at Al Gauron’s Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching, echoed LaMonica’s thoughts and most likely that of many lifelong fishermen. “It’s all I’ve ever done,” he said. According to Tomlinson, though, it is a way of life that is threatened by a variety of factors. “Drastic cuts in quotas and the higher costs of doing business have really hurt the industry,” she said. “There used to be hundreds of guys out here, but there are about nine guys actively fishing left today. We are the last of the Mohicans.” She cited the local food movement, however, as instrumental in keeping the fishing tradition alive and sustainable. “If you know where your food comes from and who has gotten it, it creates a connection,” she said. “The Seacoast has a rich fishing tradition — we want to see it thrive for years to come.”

White Hake White hake has a slender fillet with a mild flavor and soft texture that is often compared to cod (but it is softer). Monkfish Primarily harvested for tail meat, monkfish is most often compared to that of a lobster or scallop. Dogfish shark Most commonly shipped to Europe for England’s infamous fish and chips, dogfish shark feature meatier, white fillet and hold up well when fried or baked or in a chowder. King whiting Whiting (silver hake) have softer flesh and are less flaky than other whitefish and possess a mild, slightly sweet flavor.

Winter flounder Also known as “blackbacks,” winter flounder has a sweet taste and firm texture. It readily absorbs seasoning and marinades and is easily grilled. American plaice or dabs American plaice or dabs is a low-calorie flat fish high in protein that features lean, boneless, flaky white meat considered mild in flavor. Yellowtail flounder Like most flounders, yellowtail flounder is a lean boneless white fish with a mildly sweet taste and firm texture.

16 “He heals his body in January and early February,” she said. “In February and March, he fashions and fixes all his own gear — tackle, fabricating pieces for the boat — and he ties all of his flies. … Once the snow melts, he’s on the boat doing repairs and getting it seaworthy for launch in May.” In order to make a living in the commercial fishing industry, LaMonica said they must work year-round — even if that does not necessarily mean working on or in the water. “We don’t have the option to bring the boat to the shop or buy new equipment anytime something breaks,” she said. The fishermen at New Hampshire Community Seafood work until December and start up again in April, Tomlinson said, citing a partnership with Three River Farm Alliance as critical to their own operation. “We are the seafood component of their online ordering system for restaurants,” she said. “They solicit for us, invoice for us and collect the bills — they handle the administrative side. It’s been a great partnership.” She said it has been a partnership, though, that has necessitated creative solutions. “We require 15-week standing orders,” she said. “It’s the only way we can do it, but we figured out a way to make this

work together.” They also pay fishermen in their cooperative 50 cents more per pound over the going rate, which she said reflects their overall business model. “We are a cooperative,” she said. “The idea is to provide services and benefits to members. The fishermen own 80 percent and consumers own 20. It works very well for everyone.” In addition to the RSF, NHCS also offers a Community Supported Fishery, which is like a Community Supported Agriculture farm share for consumers, but includes seafood. “We had 700 members this spring and summer session and the fall session is about to begin,” said Tomlinson. She said examples of the kinds of fish included in their CSFs range from haddock, cod and pollock to various “under-utilized” local species, such as redfish, monkfish, hake and various flounders. Other fish include king whiting and dogfish shark. “Most of under-utilized fish are white and flaky like cod or haddock, but they tend to get exported overseas,” she said. “We rotate our fishes often and like to offer that variety to our customers — whether they are individuals or restaurants.” Courtesy of NH Community Seafood.

PEOPLE AND PLACES

JOLIE YONKER OF EAST COAST YOGA CLUB IN EXETER How long have you been practicing yoga? I started practicing in the ’90s and I then jumped in seriously in 2001, which is when I took my first ashtanga class. Did you immediately fall in love with yoga? It took a little time, to be honest with you. I was pret- Jolie Yonker. ty Type A and I wanted to be able to do the things I was presented with in class, so it took some time. There was a moment after class one day, though, where I noticed every snowflake that hit my windshield. I realized at that moment that there was much more to it than the physical practice. There was a knowing I was in that moment and I was conscious in it. It was my a-ha moment. When was this moment? Probably 12 or 13 years ago. It was early on in my practice. It was powerful. It was a “whoa, this is intense” moment. Did this moment change you? Yes, I realized at that moment that yoga would be a part of my life forever. It did not come until later on that I wanted to teach, but I knew then that yoga would always be there. I did start to encourage people to try yoga — not for an out-of-body experience, per se, but for how it could make them feel. I hear you are a runner — how does yoga and running work for you together? In 2002, I started training for my first marathon in Kona in June of that year. I felt great the whole race and attributed how I felt to my practicing yoga. The mind-body connection was strong. When I stopped practicing as often, I got a stress fracture in my foot, tendonitis, et cetera. There’s definitely a sweet spot, balancing athletics and practice. My passion project is working with athletes. Currently I am working with a couple private clients in their 50s who have been athletic all their lives. They each have told me they can’t believe how good they feel after practicing yoga. It’s great to see. Is that your greatest joy — seeing people experience success on their terms? Yes, I almost relive my own a-ha

moment through them. I see that look in their eyes and I see they are “in it.”’ It’s not about striving but being present and enjoying it. It is hard to put into words. It is a profound thing. There’s a pride, but not an ego pride. When you see people experience that intense joy for themselves, it is pretty cool — I guess that’s not really a yoga term, but it works. Are you from the Seacoast? No, I grew up in Chicago and I spent my summers in a small town in southwest Michigan as a kid and went to Western Michigan University. What brought you to the Seacoast? We actually moved to Exeter 20 years ago this fall, so I’ve spent nearly half my life here. I feel like an East Coaster. We came here because my husband’s job was transferring him to New England. The internet was still kind of new, so we just searched “New Hampshire” and saw a beautiful picture of Portsmouth and we said, “yes.” We looked at houses all over the Seacoast in a weekend. There was something about Exeter, though, that we loved. We just totally stepped in here blind and we love it. What is your favorite part about being out here? We are close to the mountains, the ocean, Boston, Portland — there is something about the consciousness of this community right here, though, that I love the most. Health and fitness, the arts, food and health care — we have had opportunities to move to other places, but we keep asking ourselves, “Will it be like here?” The vibe is similar to parts of coastal southern California, just without the 365 days of warm weather. We have a young daughter, so it’s nice to be a part of a safe, friendly small town. It’s our “village.” Where do you see yourself 15 years from now? Practicing, teaching, evolving. I envision there will always be a piece of us here. The Seacoast will always be part of our lives. — Rob Levey

PEOPLE AND PLACES

More than just exercise Get fit, have fun and give back One of the coolest things about getting fit on the Seacoast is that it often means giving back to local communities and area nonprofits that work to support them. One race — the Seacoast Half Marathon — has raised nearly $900,000 since its inception in 2006. Providing shelter for the homeless, Cross Road House in Portsmouth is this year’s race beneficiary with proceeds to support new program initiatives and increased demand. Having worked with the Seacoast Half Marathon Race Committee, I can personally testify that this is an event that is not to be missed. Organizers for this race are not only philanthropic, they are seasoned competitors and understand how to create a great experience for people of any ability. There are, in fact, many area races nearly every week through this month and September with things starting to slow down in October with the aforementioned Seacoast Half Marathon, which serves to unofficially close the season out. Many of these races are also well-organized and help to promote a vibrant and healthy Seacoast. It is the proverbial win-win. Frankly, the pairing of road races with charity is an established successful formula for success on the Seacoast. What is neat is that you can essentially research a race by the charity it supports. Pick your cause and you might find a race to match it. Runners are not the only philanthropy-inclined fitness enthusiasts out there, however, as local yoga studios often host various events or promotions in which funds are raised for local nonprofits. Health and wellness is not just an abstract concept, but rather a way of life here on the Seacoast, which is why I think fitness and philanthropy are so intertwined here. If you work for a nonprofit, you can certainly approach a gym, yoga studio or fitness trainer, for instance, to see if a partnership can be created. The idea is to form a true partnership, though, as many for-profit businesses are inundated with “asks” from nonprofits, so you want to exercise caution when soliciting support from the community. Raising awareness is sometimes just as important as raising money. One thing that should be noted — especially in the case of road races — is that towns often supply resources and “manpower” in support of fitness-related fundraisers. It is honestly pretty amazing how wide the net is when it comes to the

promotion of health and wellness on the greater Seacoast. Another consideration is that area road races are generally 100-percent volunteerdriven, which means organizers are not walking away with a paycheck. Ever volunteer for a race? Try it. You would be hard-pressed to find a better bunch of people than volunteers for road races or other charity-themed fitness events. What is also neat is that many charity fitness events create incentives for teams, so gather some friends and carve out a few hours. If you have never watched a road race before, then consider attending one. Fitness is infectious. You just might end up participating in a race one of these days. I guess the takeaway here is that getting fit is about much more than personal gain. It is about community. It is about connecting with others as a means to share in the lifestyle we all love here in the greater Seacoast region. Lastly, getting fit is simply a lot of fun. Get fit, have fun and give back — it is a great formula for a great life. — Rob Levey Want to see your photo in the Scene? CAR TALK

Intermittent highway failures point to bad fuel pump Dear Car Talk: I own a 2002 Chevy Suburban with 178,000 miles. I bought it from my brother-in-law for $3,000 for my son to drive while in college. It has died several times By Ray Magliozzi on the highway, causing him to pull over quickly to get out of the way of traffic. Before it dies, he feels a jerkiness or a rumbling. The car then loses acceleration, and pushing on the gas pedal gets no response. He can then coast to a stop or push the brake pedal to stop on the shoulder. It usually will restart in a minute or two, and runs normally thereafter. Occasionally, it has died several times within an hour while driving on the highway. Recently, the Suburban died on the highway on our way to visit family for a holiday. After restarting, it ran for over an hour, getting us to our destination without an issue. The dealership can’t seem to find anything wrong with it. However, they say the fuel pump is on the low end, but they tell me it appears to be within the range required for the vehicle. What should I have the dealership replace or check? — Mike Have them replace the fuel pump, Mike. You know, those fuel pumps aren’t what they

used to be. Nowadays, a mere 175,000 miles, and poof, they’re done. You have the classic symptoms of a failing fuel pump. It usually dies intermittently, usually on the highway on long trips, after it’s been working hard at high pressure and heating up. It’ll fail just as you described, by slowing down the flow of fuel, which makes the engine lose power, or chug or stutter, and finally conk out completely. After a short period of time, it’ll cool off enough to allow you to restart the car and drive away. Until it fails again. Which is going to happen more and more often. If you have a helpful mechanic, he might be willing to put a fuel-pressure gauge on the truck and drive the car home himself overnight. If he can get it to fail, he’ll actually see the fuel pressure drop as the vehicle falters ... from 25 psi, to 15, to 10, to zero. I suppose it could be a bad crank angle sensor, which could create the same symptoms. But the fact that your mechanic found the fuel pressure to be low (even if it was technically within specs) makes me think that the fuel pump is more likely at fault. Dear Car Talk: I get a vibration noise behind the back seat area when the car is in drive, the lights

are on and I stop at a light. If I turn off the lights and put the car in park, the vibration and sound both go away. I am living and working in Japan, and my car is a 2010 Toyota Paseo. I’ve had it only two months. I removed items from the trunk to see if that is the problem, but I still get the vibration. Please give me some solutions. It’s driving me nuts! — Mike Well, now you know why the last guy sold it, Mike. You also know where to find him. So you can go visit him in the psych ward, and ask him what solutions he already tried. Since it’s coming from the back seat area, it’s most likely to be something fairly benign, like the exhaust pipe vibrating against the underside of the car. When you’re stopped at a light in drive and your headlights are on, the engine speed is dragged down. It could be that when the engine is turning slowly and the geometry of the exhaust system is just so, the pipe between the catalytic converter and the muffler moves up just enough to touch the bottom of the car. When you put the car into park and remove the power drain of the headlights, that results in an increase in idle speed and a slight change in the angle of the engine

vis-a-vis the exhaust system. That could be enough to make the vibration go away. As an experiment, you might even be able to make the noise go away temporarily by holding your left foot on the brake and touching the gas pedal lightly. But since the problem is pretty easy to reproduce, it should be a piece of cake to solve. Just take it to a mechanic, put your foot on the brake, put the car in drive, turn on the headlights and get the vibration going. Then the mechanic can grab the tailpipe, using a cloth or a pair of gloves, and see if he can stop or even just change the vibration. If he can — and I suspect he will be able to — then it could be something simple, like an exhaust hanger that broke off. Or maybe you bent a section of the exhaust pipe when you drove over those sake barrels. If he can’t find anything wrong with the tailpipe itself, then you could have one or more worn-out or broken motor mounts. A broken motor mount also can cause the exhaust pipe to shift, because it allows the engine to move too much. He can test that, too, while you’re in gear, by using a big pry bar against the engine and seeing if the engine moves more than it should or if shifting the engine changes the noise. By Ethan Hogan

SURF LESSON AT SUMMER SESSIONS IN RYE Where I went: Summer Sessions in Rye is a surf shop and cafe that offers hour-long surf lessons for $60. I went there with the intent of doing a paddleboarding lesson, but when the instructors said the weather was more geared toward surfing that day, I jumped at the chance. I have never been surfing before, so I was hoping that my skateboarding experience would at least help me balance on the waves. The shop is on Ocean Boulevard in front of Jenness Beach where the lessons take place. What it is: A personal surfing lesson with an instructor who has the experience to teach you all the fundamentals it takes to stand up on a board and ride a modest wave. You are provided with a beginner’s surfboard and wetsuit. The lessons are done on the waves at Jenness Beach right next to the shop, so you only have to walk down to the beach from the shop. My Experience: My surfing instructor’s name was Sam and he had been surfing since he was 7 years old. He was actually part of the surf camp on Jenness Beach when he first started years ago and now he is teaching people at the same spot. The lesson starts on land. Sam had me draw a line in the sand with my heel to represent the middle of the surfboard. Then we

went through the motions of what’s called “popping up,” where you go from lying down flat on your stomach to standing on the board. Sam said that some places teach the move differently, but at Summer Session, you paddle, get into a pushup position, then quickly pull your legs though your arms as you pop up into a standing position. Once we did the movement a few times on the sand at full speed, Sam said I was ready for the waves. The best part about have an instructor with you is that they know what waves are good to try and when to start paddling. We went out to about chest-deep water, where Sam stood and I laid on the board. I asked a few more questions about how much I should paddle. He told me to paddle as hard as I could until he yelled “pop up!” I could tell Sam had his eye on a wave as he swung my board around and started pulling me up to speed. “Paddle, paddle, paddle,” he said as he pushed the back of the board and sent me forward. I could feel that the water around me was no longer calm. It was building up energy and lifting me upward as it rose. “Pop up!” Sam yelled from somewhere

Hampton Beach’s

By the end of the hour-long lesson, Sam was teaching me to ride the line of the wave to shore. So instead of pointing my board straight at the beach, I was turning it in toward the curl of the wave at a 45-degree angle from the shore. At first, I turned too hard and rode up over the lip of the wave and the opportunity passed. But after a few more tries I was cutting into the wave and riding on the mini-curl. At this point I realized that I had only really been looking down at my feet as I was surfing. So on the next wave I took in the moment more completely and looked around as I surfed into shore. When the wave is breaking you are essentially riding into shore on a stampede of rushing water. And the most amazing part is that you are keeping up with the wave, even using its energy to propel you forward. Who should try this: Anyone who is looking for a challenge that is safe and fun should try this. If you have experience skateboarding or snowboarding, you will be more comfortable from the start. But if you are new to any of type of board sport, the instructors will help you focus on the basics to get you up on your feet.

behind me. It is hard to be humble about the experience because, well, I was a natural. My skateboarding experience apparently transferred over more than I expected because I was able to pop up and ride a wave on my first try. Standing up on the board and feeling all the energy from the wave pushing me forward was a really good feeling. I glided over the water as it propelled me forward. I didn’t know when to get off so before I reached the sand I awkwardly jumped in the water and collected the board back to me with the leash that was tied to my ankle. Sam was impressed. “That never happens,” he told me. We waded out in the water as Sam sent me again and again down the path of the waves. Since I could already do the basics, I decided to focus on having a more confident stance, with my legs bent and my upper body more comfortably posed. Between waves, Sam told me about the surfboard he’d made for himself. A normal board is made with a foam core covered in resin. Surfers can shape the foam board to their exact specifications before covering it in the liquid resin, which then solidifies to the hard shell.

AT THROWBACK BREWERY Throwback Brewery is located on 19th-century farmland that was owned by the same family for decades. Six years ago, the co-founder and president of Throwback, Nicole Carrier, and her team outbid developers for the property and then renovated the 1860s gentleman’s farmhouse to become the locally sourced brewery and restaurant that it is today. The Throwback Brewery is at 7 Hobbs Road in North Hampton and is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday noon to 7 p.m., and Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m.; it is closed Monday and Tuesday. How long has Throwback Brewery been located on the Seacoast? It’s been six years in July. We started as the first nanobrewery in the state with a tasting room across the street in a little warehouse, and then we were in business for a year when this property went up for auction and we moved in just over two years ago. We started with a mission of throwback, making beer using local ingredients and sort of a throwback to pre-Prohibition by using what was around us and by being a nice community-oriented brewery. We continued that mission with our food, so Carrie, our chef, tries to use as much local food as possible. We have a 12-acre farm. … This year we probably have … five or so acres that we’re farming between the animals and the hop yard and the orchard and the little house for the chef. But we also have tomatoes and squash and greens and kale and all sorts of good things. What do you think makes Throwback Brewery unique? There’s no other brewery that has such a well-defined mission in terms of sourcing everything within 200 miles, so that sets us apart. But then it’s just the atmosphere here. There’s no other place you can come and sit in the beer garden eating a kale salad and the kale was grown in the field. You could be watching the farmers and the goats and the pigs, drinking a beer that was made here. So this is a unique combination of a farm-to-table restaurant and a brewery. The beer ... basically all of the adjuncts that we use come from the Seacoast area. We have a 15-barrel brew house, that’s where we make the beer and store the beer downstairs so people can poke their heads in and see our system. Yearly, we brew over 1,000 barrels of beer. What is your personal favorite dish? See, that’s hard to answer because I’m pretty spoiled. Carrie likes to make me treats from what’s fresh from our farm. Like today she got guanciale, or the cheek from a pork, from Kellie Brook Farm and then she smoked it outside and cured it. So I went

to my desk today and had this beautifully grilled guanciale with these gorgeous heirloom tomatoes with cracked pepper mayo and some basil from our farm. What dish do you recommend everyone try? People order our burger and the Korean wings in mass quantities, and I think that’s because people like wings and they like burgers but also because they’re a little bit different. So our wings aren’t just straight up buffalo wings, they’re Korean wings. So they have those Korean spices and it comes with a kimchi ball, which is basically a rice ball and they put housemade kimchi inside of it. … Kimchi is a fermented cabbage that is popular in Korea. Our housemade burger is a play on a deconstructed French onion soup. It’s a burger, we put caramelized onions on it and some beer honey, we put garlic thyme aioli and Gruyere cheese and it’s on our spent grain buns that we make here.

What is an essential skill when running a restaurant? There’s so many skills it’s hard to pick just one. I think for us, we have a lot of fans because of our authenticity and what we stand for. People relate to what we are trying to do as a business and people that have the same core beliefs and philosophy about eating local, drinking local, supporting small businesses and I think people can see and appreciate what we’re trying to do here and that makes customers come back again. If you could serve any celebrity, who would it be and why? Lady Gaga is not a bad one because my mom recently passed away and she owned a bar in Nashville and they had Lady Gaga come in and do this dive bar tour and it kicked off at The 5 Spot, which is my mom’s bar. And my mom was at the sound check and she was in her wheelchair because her health was

not doing well and Lady Gaga made a point of coming up to her, getting her name and she kept coming back and is like “Is Diane here?” She came back the next few days and then she left her a note and sort of like, kissed the napkin and gave it to my mom. It made my mom feel so good and so happy, so I would sort of want to thank her for doing that. I would serve her a beer of ours that was pretty comforting. What is your favorite part about being located on the Seacoast? We have so many great farms here and chefs and other brewers and the networks of all these people working together in a collaborative fashion has been really awesome to see. And I feel like the people that come in on a regular basis and live around here are just so nice and so supportive, it’s like they are invested in our journey. That means a lot to us. — Ethan Hogan

Premier peaches

Local orchards are ripe for picking LowellSummerMusic.Org No Ticket Fees

Friday, August 18

Whether you want to use them in a recipe or eat them on their own as a sweet, juicy snack, now’s the time to get native New Hampshire peaches. “We started our harvest sometime during the fourth week of July,” Todd Wagner of Applecrest Farm said. “This is typical for our region — however, every year is slightly different. Mother Nature ultimately dictates when the peaches are ready for picking.”

Which peach is for you?

The growth pattern of a peach tree can also depend on its variety. According to Karen Caverly at Union Lake Peach Orchard, clingstone peaches are the earliest variety to ripen in this area, whereas their counterparts, freestone peaches, are normally harvested at the height of the season in mid-August. “Clingstones are better for eating because the flesh literally ‘clings’ to the pit,” Caverly said. “Freestones are good for canning, freezing and baking because the flesh comes right away from the pit as you slice it.” These physical differences are important to consider when choosing a peach, but they do not necessarily determine flavor. According to Wagner, the taste of a peach (clingstone or freestone) largely depends on whether it contains yellow or white flesh. “White peaches tend to offer a light aromatic sweetness,” Wagner said. “Yellow peaches are also sweet; however, they are much more acidic than white peaches and therefore can have a nice tart taste.”

Vegetable pad thai It’s that time of harvest — everything seems to be ripe and ready for eating. This week, I couldn’t bring myself to focus on just one perishable ingredient. Oh no, there are too many fresh and local things from which to choose. The key for me this week was finding recipes that incorporate as many farm-fresh vegetables as possible. In my own garden, I’ve got cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans and zucchini galore. Out there at the market there are carrots, peppers, onions and even corn. How’s a girl to choose? It’s absolutely obvious that the average American doesn’t eat enough vegetables. Sure, we struggle with obesity in this country, but what about heart disease and the innumerable diet fads that accompany it? If there’s one message out there that rings true, it’s this: Eat your vegetables. Your mom knew what she was talking about! Vegetables are filling, nutrient-dense and low in calories. They should make up most of our cuisine. Yet, do they? I frequently come back to Michael Pollan’s thesis in his Easy Vegetable Pad Thai 1 zucchini (spiralized or grated) 1 small bunch carrots (spiralized or grated) 2 cups mung bean sprouts, divided in two 1 cup green onions, chopped 1 red pepper, very thinly sliced 8 ounces rice noodles, softened according to packet’s instructions 3 eggs 1 jar Watcharee’s pad thai sauce 2 teaspoon sesame oil ½ cup crushed dry roasted peanuts

book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. In the first chapter, Pollan implores us to “eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” I consider myself a fairly healthy eater but must admit that I struggle big time with this! It’s much easier to choose meals based on carbohydrates or protein rather than the all-important vegetable. This week, I took a shortcut so that I could focus on my veggies. I decided to make pad thai, but instead of creating my own sauce (which has proven very tricky for me in the past), I purchased a jar from a reputable brand. Watcharee’s sauces, available at my local Hannaford, hail from Yarmouth, Maine. Their ingredients are excellent: no fillers and no high-fructose corn syrup. So even though I am taking a shortcut with sauce, I don’t have to feel like I’m undoing all my efforts in making a vegetable-centered dish. Hopefully you have them available but, if not, you can get them at watcharee.com (no, this is not a sponsored column!). — Allison Willson Dudas Heat oil over medium high heat in wok or very large frying pan. I decided to add the peppers to the wok first because they were the meatiest of the vegetables. I prepped and stirred for about 1 minute, until slightly cooked. Then, add the remaining vegetables (only half of the bean sprouts) and stir for about 2-3 minutes. Make a clearing in the middle of the pan and add the eggs. Immediately break yolks and stir until slightly scrambled. Drop in noodles and sauce, mixing all together. Add in remaining bean sprouts at last second and mix. Put into serving platter and top with peanuts. Serve hot.

People commonly ask me, “New Hampshire has wineries?” Technically, I think every state in the U.S. now has at least one winery, and New Hampshire is no exception. We have several, in fact, with active and creative winemakers who are constantly making new wines for all of us to enjoy. And their wines are winning medals and stacking up against other wines across New England. Every year, several New Hampshire wineries submit entries into the Big E Wine Competition. Our state had no shortage of winners this year, including the “Premier Exhibitor Best Winery” category taken by Jewell Towne Vineyards in South Hampton. Jewell Towne had quite a showing in this year’s competition, also earning “Best New Hampshire Wine” and Double Gold — the only one this year — for their 2016 Vignoles. Their 2016 Valvin Muscat was named “Best New Hampshire Grown Wine.” New Hampshire wines that earned gold medals include LaBelle Winery’s Gewürztraminer and Sparkling Cranberry and Jewell Towne’s South Hampton White and Petite Amie. The list of silver medal earners includes Jewell Towne’s 2016 Valvin Muscat; Copper Beech Winery’s Wild Blue, Crisp Apple, Melisi Heritage Apple and Autumn Harvest; LaBelle Winery’s White Alchemy, Granite State Red, Red Alchemy and Cranberry; Appolo Vineyards’ Niagara and Brianna Reserve; Sweet Baby Vineyard’s Niagara and Amarone, and Zorvino Vineyards’ Niagara and Maple. Bronze medal winners were Appolo Vineyards’ Bridesmaid, China Girl, Dragonfly Red and Blushing Bride; Black Bear Vineyard’s La Crescent; Jewell Towne Vineyards’ Leon Millot, Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, Seyval, Alden, Landot Noir and Aurore; Sweet Baby Vineyard’s Marechal Foch, Barn Door Red, Strawberry Wine, Apple Wine, White Peach, Blueberry Wine and Raspberry Wine; LaBelle Winery’s Amherst Vineyard White Estate, Dry Blueberry, Verano Sangria, Riesling and Seyval Blanc Reserve, and Zorvino Vineyards’ St. Croix. Congratulations to all our local winners who are making great wine! If you’re looking for some new wines to try, this list is a good starting point. Many of

these wines are available at New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlet stores, area grocery stores or the vineyards.

What I am drinking

A friend and I recently shared a bottle of Boom Boom! Syrah. I think I have had this wine before, but it had been a while. It paired better with the grilled steak tips she was having as it can stand up to gamier meats, but went well enough with my chicken teriyaki kabobs. This wine comes from Washington and is mainly syrah grapes with a small amount of viognier blended in. It is a very earthy wine, meaning it has aromas of herbs and a slight hint of dirt. Thankfully, on the palate there are notes of black cherries and tobacco. According to the winemaker, it is “an explosive dark cherry bomb,” hence the name. There are noticeable tannins on the finish. I will admit that it took me a few minutes to warm up to this wine. There may be a couple different reasons for this: I have been drinking white recently; it was a little bit earthier than I was expecting, and I haven’t had syrah in a while. After a few sips, though, I found it enjoyable. I wouldn’t drink this wine on a hot summer day, but as we head into fall and winter, this would be one of my picks. It typically retails for about $15 to $20 in area grocery stores and New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlet stores. — Stefanie Phillips

That didn’t matjournalism career, working her way up

ter to me, as Rachel is an incredibly compelling character, but I was largely clueless on what the narrative had in store for her. Lehane spends the first third of the novel laying a foundation for Rachel, defining her, or at least displaying how the people in her life have helped shape her, even if they have just played bit parts: She “[f]elt too the old suspicion that life, as she has thus far experienced it, was a series of detachments. Characters crossed the stage, and some hung around longer than others, but all ultimately exited.” About halfway through, things change abruptly — and abruptly probably isn’t strong enough. The reader still sees Rachel develop as a character, but let’s just say the gas pedal sticks with regard to the plot. Calling it a thrill ride from that point forward seems to cheapen the thoughtfulness of the language, but still, the reader does have to white-knuckle his way through.

Rachel is complicated. She’s tough and persistent and smart and extremely relatable, but she’s also vulnerable, scared, unsure of herself and not particularly trusting or willing to open up to others. That complexity makes her real and worth following on her unpredictable journey. The dialogue is wonderful: witty (but not too witty), believable, at times fun, and very real, even at the darkest moments. Rachel attempts to evade a potentially predatory drunk at a bar: “‘Offended your sense of proprietary, did it?’ ‘No.’ She didn’t correct his malapropism, but she did fail to stifle a sigh.” Since We Fell makes you think about your own life and how you would handle things if it all fell apart. Would you bounce back? Where would you go if you just followed your instincts? It also makes you think pretty hard about how well you know the people in your life. The story is at once a mystery, a thriller and a chaotic love story. While some of the plot twists come up to the edge of over-the-top, Rachel’s believability and her relatability keep it at least somewhat grounded in a topsy-turvy reality. A — Jeff Mucciarone

Get together

All-day Seacoast Congress of Sound returns Having begun eight years ago as a backyard gathering of like-minded musicians, the Seacoast Congress of Sound enters its sixth year as the perfect reflection of an eclectic arts community. Held in a bucolic outdoor setting, the show offers wide-ranging music, from the power-chord-drenched Sam Hill to the brilliant folk harmonies of River Sister, with experimental jazz (Nihco Gallo), hip-hop (Kingdom), dreamy indie pop (Kid Coyote) and New Orleans roots music (Soggy Po’ Boys). With an unclassifiable melting pot of influences, Rick Rude is an ideal headliner. Named after a famous wrestler (they’re fans), the Dover band features monstrous twin guitars drowning the stage in power chords, and a female bassist who sings about carpal tunnel syndrome on the thudding “Ow For Now.” Another song bemoans fear of the dark. Annually, proceeds go to a different beneficiary — this year’s is Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. “It started as a party and we parlayed it into a nonprofit fundraiser,” said Mike Effenberger, a musician who co-founded the event with his Soggy Po’ Boys bandmate Stu Dias. Others organizers include fellow Po’ Boy Nick Phaneuf, Elissa Margolin and Stef Guzikowski. Previous shows supported Portsmouth’s 3S Artspace, the Children’s Art Museum of New Hampshire and Technology Academy, among others. “It’s all done on a volunteer basis; all Seacoast Congress of Sound When: Saturday, Aug. 19, noon to 11 p.m. Where: Rock Maple Woods, 664 1st Crown Point Road, Strafford Tickets: $12 per person at seacoastcongressofsound.com

of the bands are donating their time,” said Effenberger. “It’s also a way to raise money for a cause we believe in. That’s varied from year to year but we believe in this one for sure.” New in 2017 is an increased involvement from regional restaurants and coffee shops. “There are about a half-dozen either donating or selling stuff — all at cost,” Effenberger said. “There’s always been some of that — Black Birch has been involved in the past — but it’s grown this year.” For the second year in a row, the show will be held at Rock Maple Woods, a verdant venue in the Blue Hills Range. It’s hosted a range of recent festivals, including Camp-N-Jam and Zach Dep-

Steve’s Diner

uty’s Chicken Pot Field Games and Campout. “It’s like a natural amphitheater in this sugar maple grove … a great spot to see music,”said Effenberger, who lives a mile up the road from the farm, owned by Cecil Abels. “The lay of the land is such that sound doesn’t travel forever and bug the neighbors.” All musicians donate their time, and volunteers are always welcome. “Yes, there’s always room for more,”

Effenberger said. “The need ranges the gamut from parking logistics to stage setup, loading in gear. We always need help with parking; it’s always a big hassle.” Effenberger books the show with an eye toward variety, an easy task given how eclectic he is in his own musical endeavors. He plays solo around the region and is looking forward to a first album from his band Weird Turn Pro. He had a long run with the Tan Vampires, touring and making a few memorable records before the group disbanded. “It ended due to the reality of people’s lives changing, schedules growing apart, new families starting,” said Effenberger. “In that order.” The phone interview was done from a Soggy Po’ Boys stop in Athens, Georgia. The New Orleans roots band has stayed busy in 2017. “It’s been a good year, we put out a new EP, a seven-inch disc with a digital download in June at 3S,” Effenberger said. “We’re making more inroads into Portland and Boston, and making a new record with Lu Rojas, who has recorded a bunch of records we love, like Panorama Brass Band.” A good turnout “is variable, but it’s always floated around a few hundred,” MIKE EFFENBERGER Effenberger said. ”It’s not a massive event by any stretch, but it’s a great space for that amount. It doesn’t feel mobbed, and there’s always a place to be.” — Michael Witthaus

• Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): There is so much you can accomplish if you stay organized. So keep looking for that to-do list you made back in October. • Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are a jovial and outgoing person who always keeps your co-workers and friends laughing, though they do it behind your back.

• Aries (March 21-April 19): This will be a day you’ll long remember, but for reasons you’ll want to soon forget. • Taurus (April 20-May 20): Focus on the people you love most. And when Taylor Swift doesn’t call back, try your mother. • Gemini (May 21-June 20): Underestimating the competition will cost you dearly. But in your case, you’re so far behind that it’s not really an issue.

But it was no joke. A ladder truck was dispatched to rescue a parrot that had escaped and became tangled in its leash 50 feet up in a tree. (Bonus: The firefighter who braved the 50-foot climb was Colt Boldman.)

Two AT&T utility workers apparently didn’t work fast enough on lines outside the home of Jorge Jove, 64, of Hialeah, Florida, on July 19. After confronting the workers, Jove went back into his house, came out carrying a gun and began shooting at the AT&T trucks, deflating the tires. Jove reloaded twice and shot at the trucks’ engines before aiming at Gilberto Ramos, a service worker who was up on a utility pole. Jove was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Another observer was less sympathetic. “Robots: 0; humans: 1,” he tweeted.

PET OF THE WEEK From the moment Mac arrived at the shelter, there was a collective effort to make him feel at home. He was a bit anxious at first. It’s difficult for some dogs to transition from a home environment to a shelter. Mac was brought to us because he wasn’t good with the new baby in the home. So we are looking for a loving adults-only home with folks who would enjoy the company of a nice older dog. Mac seems fine with the other dogs he has met at the shelter but needs a cat-free home. This 7-year-old black and white Labrador/Hound mix is going to make some happy household even happier. And you can rest assured, kind people will make Mac happy again, too. Like all the animals available for adoption at the New Hampshire SPCA, Mac is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on all his shots. Visit him at the NHSPCA in Stratham, call 603-772-2921 or visit nhscpa.org.
