MARCELO KRAUSE WINS AT FESTIVAL IN FRANCE For 38 years the World Festival of Underwater Images has recognized cinematographic, photographic and artistic productions related to the submarine world. Every year for five days in the end of October the festival offers the general public a window into the seas and oceans of the world. More than 100 exhibitors, almost 450 photos on display and more than 140 movies screened. It is undoubtedly the most traditional and important subaquatic images festival in Europe. In 2011, Marcelo won a “Plongeur d´Argent” for second place in the Photo Trio category. It was the first time that a Brazilian won a prize at the Festival. The pictures were all taken in Brazil and will part of his book “Pantanal Terra e Água” to be released soon.

uraĂ§ao is the slice of the Caribbean which has recently conquered the heart of many Brazilians. Trying to describe such a magic and welcoming place, as is this island, in words is a delicate task, and I believe the following images will explain the reason for such passion.

The History of Curaçao begins in 1499, during the third exploratory voyage to the New World by Christopher Columbus. Upon disembarking, under the leadership of Alonso Ojeda, the seamen became the first Europeans to set foot on Curaçao. In 1634, Curaçao became a Dutch colony, and in 1815 an international treaty awarded its definitive possession to the Netherlands. In 1954, Curaçao attained autonomous government, replacing the status of colony. Considered the main island among the five which form the Dutch Antilles, Curaçao has picturesque and cosmopolitan Willemstad as its capital. Boasting a beautiful architecture and bustling shopping, since 1997 the town is considered a Historic and Cultural Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO.

This is Curaรงao, a complete program for families, singles, passionate couples, and in May 2012 a destination not to be missed by the fans of underwater photography, since the island will be the venue for one of the largest such events in Latin America: Shootout Brazil 2012, to be attended by some of the most celebrated names in Brazilian and global u/w photo. At the end of this article you will find a page with more information about this event. Upon invitation by ARRIBATUR and CTB (Curaรงao Tourist Board), we joined a fam trip together with 11 Brazilian dive center owners and managers. Old and new friends who made this trip an unforgettable one. We dove a lot, duly guided by the team from Ocean Encounters who boast the largest and best diving infrastructure on the island, with boats and shops at the main hotels and resorts. Thanks to this fantastic infrastructure we had the opportunity to savor the main dive sites of this paradise.

Klein Curaçao: it is a small island very close to the main one, with a longer boat ride and exposed to the open ocean, not a trip for those who get seasick. It’s a wild, uninhabited place, where you can visit the lighthouse ruins and a shipwreck stuck on the beach. Crystal-clear water, life-covered walls, turtles and rays are frequently seen during the dive. Great hammerhead sharks are not rare out in the blue.

East Point: on the way to Klein Curaรงao we find a more exposed wall right at the eastern tip of the main island, which due to the distance and exposure to currents is an excellent site for drifts, where we can find passing pelagic fish out in the blue, besides the regular coral formations with their colorful walls pulsating with life. During our visit we were pleased by the sighting of an enormous manta ray which calmly passed by the group, leaving us dazzled and ecstatic.

SHIPWRECK | SUPERIOR PRODUCER

Superior Producer: Elected by Sport Diver Magazine as one of the best wreck dives of the Caribbean. It´s a cargo ship sunk in December 1977 which lies on the bottom in navigation position at a depth of 30 meters. Diving there is not always possible, as it is located in a region with intense cruise ship traffic, and therefore the diver should check with the operators about the best dates and times to visit the wreck, since it´s one of the highlights of the trip.

NOCTURNAL| SUPERIOR PRODUCER

The ship is covered in coral and in general you can see large barracudas patrolling its surroundings. It is possible to penetrate its cargo holds and wheel room, if you have the training for it. We were also honored with a night dive in this wreck, including turtles and lots of activity all around.

Tugboat: There is a word to describe Tugboat: “enchantment”. Sunk 25 years ago, the wreck remains are in five meters of water. It´s a very popular site, excellent both for diving and snorkeling. An amazing photo opportunity, as due to the small depth even simple cameras without flash can attain great results. Besides the wreck this site offers deeper walls, and is one of the top 10 dive sites of Curaçao.

DIVE SITE | MUSHROOM FOREST

Mushroom Forest: one of the most famous dive sites in Curaรงao, made of hard coral formations resembling mushrooms, giving the site a forest-like appearance. Mushroom Forest is very rich in marine life, where small fish schools, green morays, sponges and colorful corals complete the scenery. The highlight is a cave named Blue Room, which can be visited at the end of the dive for a wonderful snorkel.

DIVE SITE | CARPILE Carpile: a different site, an old cars graveyard in front of the Breezes Hotel. It´s a deep dive, between 30 and 50 meters, but with a cool and unique scenery, with more than a hundred cars “parked” at the bottom, already inserted into the reef with abundant marine life. It´s a recommended visit for the more experienced.

Dolphin Dive: A dive organized jointly with the Curaçao Dolphin Academy. It´s a special opportunity to dive with dolphins used to interact with humans in their natural environment, a marvelous experience – to spend more than 40 minutes with one of the world´s most intelligent animals is a moving experience and worth every cent.

Non-divers can enjoy all the marine beauty in the 70 giant aquaria of the Seaquarium. Visitors can also visit the underwater park in a glass-bottom boat. Waterskiing, jetski riding and snorkeling are also common sports around the island.

Also known as the “Caribbean Netherlands”, the island of Curaçao is located in the Southern Caribbean, 60 Km from the Venezuelan mainland. As it pertains to time zones, Brazilian tourists have nothing to fear: Curaçao lies only one hour behind the official time of Brazil (or two hours during Daylight Savings Time).

The island encompasses an area of 472 sq. km, almost the same size as Florian贸polis. In all there are 38 beaches and 40 bays, to be enjoyed under a sun that shines almost all year long. Waters are crystal-clear and blue, with temperatures varying between 2 and 27 degrees centigrade. Visibility can attain 40 meters.

Half of the 150,000 inhabitants are concentrated in the capital Willemstad, cut in half by Santa Ana Bay and divided in two parts: Otrobanda (residential) and Punda (commercial and touristic). Willemstad harbors the commercial, industrial and banking center. The typically colonial architecture sports bright colors and the Dutch-looking windmills are a major attraction for tourists.

The locals of Curaçao, always nice and great hosts, know best how to enjoy the beauty and culture of their land. The natives´ joy is contagious on the tourists. Curaçao has three bridges, the most interesting being Emma Bridge (a homage to the grandmother of Mother Queen Juliana), a moving bridge floating over pontoons which swings open to allow the passage of ships. Built entirely of metal, it is the largest moving bridge of its kind in the world and serves as a walkway for pedestrians only, uniting Punda and Otrobanda since 1888.

Best Shopping Options De Breedestraat, De Heerenstraat and Madurostraat are considered to be the most famous in town. They boast an abundant array of shops with electronics, perfumes, jewelry, watches, clothes and computer supplies to catch the tourists´ attention. The “Floating Market” is also a mandatory stop for consumerists. Located at the Sha Capriles pier, the market is composed of several boats covered in multicolored canvas, where you can find fruit and groceries from Venezuela, besides clothes and utensils in general. The guilder is the official currency of Curaçao and is worth about 1.75 in relation to the US Dollar, which is also accepted in all shops and restaurants.

The gastronomy of Curaรงao is based mainly on fish and seafood, but there are also several restaurants offering international cuisine. Jambo (a kind of bean soup with okra); Bestia Chiki (goat with sauce and mooriosh rice with lentils, okra and fried bananas); Sopito (fish in coconut sauce); Karni Stoba (meat stew) and iguana soup are some of the more traditional dishes worth trying. For dessert, Quesillo (caramel pudding) and Casjupete (black cake) are the best choices.

The best of Curaçao The scenery is simply seductive. Mile upon mile of the most beautiful natural landscapes, composed of turquoise-blue water, passing through emerald green and ending in the deep blue of the open sea. The Northern beaches are considered improper for bathing due to jellyfish and too many rocks. Those down South, however, are great for swimming, Kenepa being one of them. As rainfall is very scarce (500mm per year), the sky is always blue. temperatures are high, never dropping below 23 degrees centigrade. A car is essential to reach the crystal-clear waters of Lagun, Westpunt, Baia Beach, Jeremi, Santu Pretu, San Nicolas, Jan Thiel and Daaibooi. Visiting these beaches is a must for any tourists´ planning.

A product not to be missed by tourists is the liqueur which carries the name of the island. After all, who hasn´t heard about the Curaçao Liqueur? It is distilled in several tones but blue is the best known. It´s an original recipe, produced from fermenting orange peel oil. The taste is unique.

When the sun sets Music is what makes a difference by night in Curaçao. Hotels offer folklore and music shows, hyped mainly by salsa, rumba and meringue. But there´s a rather varied schedule to satisfy every taste. Those wishing to try their luck may find it in the much sought after roulettes and slot machines which can be found in every hotel.

To Do Besides the night scene and heavenly beaches, whoever chooses Curaçao as a holiday destination also gets an array of other cultural and entertainment options. Not to be missed are the Hato Caves, on the island´s hinterland. A place where slaves hid from settlers, the caves occupy an area of some 4,900 square meters, but only a part is open to visitors. Stalactites and stalagmites are common inside the caves. Quartz incrustations, corals and seashells also compensate for the challenging walks taken by tourists, always accompanied by a guide. Other tourist attractions in Curaçao are the military forts and the Beth Haim Cemetery, the oldest in the Southern hemisphere, with tombstones engraved in Portuguese and Hebraic.

Parties and Festivals Curaçao lives in a party atmosphere. To affirm this all year round there are several events, among these the Carnival, Tumba, Jazz, Cinema and TV Festivals. Folkloric parties and sports tournaments, such as the International Tennis Tournament and the International Sailboat Regatta add to the euphoria. By year´s end, exactly in November, the St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) Festival begins. He arrives in a sailboat and distributes candies and gifts to the kids in the streets of Willemstad.

Happenings All year long the discos abound to lively up the evenings of locals and tourists alike. Good suggestions for night souls are TMF, HOOKS HUT, ZANZI BAR, DE HEERENS, ASIA DE CUBA and MAMBO BEACH.

Accommodation and Transport Hotels across the island, mostly from 3 to 5 starts, offer all the infrastructure guests need. Daily rates vary from US$ 100 to US$ 300.

Transportation is also not a problem. All the hotels operate vans to take their guests downtown for free.

Curaรงao taxis do not have meters and the visitor willing to go around should negotiate the fare with the driver. Hotels also provide phones and tips on several companies specializing in island tours. It is also possible to rent a car and thus have autonomy to move around the island without a schedule or fixed destinations.

Besides English and Dutch, Papiamento is also an official language. Brazilian tourists will find it easy to understand the native tongue – Papiamento derives from “papiar” (to chat). Apart from the writing, the the native language sounds very much like Portuguese when spoken slowly. Here are some examples: bon bini (bem-vindo, welcome) which you will see everywhere and in all taxi license plates; ta mashá caro (está muito caro, it´s too expensive); ta mashá barato (está muito barato. it´s very cheap); kon ta bai? (como vai? how are you?); Mi ta mashá bon (eu estou muito bem, I´m very well); Basta bon, danki (bem, obrigado, fine, thank you).

The island´s economy revolves around the oil refinery, offshore companies and tourism. Curaçao has no freshwater source. A water plant developed a process for desalination of seawater, where the superheating of boilers evaporates the water and separates the salt. Water vapor is then cooled and water flows pure and transparent in all the islands´ faucets. This same plant generates the islands´ electricity. Cave diving can be done by any person with proper training and preparation, but not every one has the serene mind required to feel at ease in an environment with a ceiling such as a flooded cave. This is the first in a series of articles which will show a bit of the MTECH Expedition to the Florida caves. We chose to open this series with one of the most visited caves in Marianna: Jackson Blue, where we dove three times including a long night dive with the entire cave just for ourselves.

Continuing with my analogy about mountaineering, when I say that cave diving is the Everest of our activity, Ginnie Springs and Marianna in Florida would be the closest to a base camp chockablock with alpinists and their gear. Florida is the cradle of cave diving and one can say that divers living here breath cave diving 24 hours a day. A good chunk of the local economy in the small townships where the caves are located profit from dive tourism; a survey undertaken a few years ago estimated that more than US$ 1 million is generated directly from Jackson Blue Cave alone.

I can affirm from experience that, after diving nine different Florida caves in ten days, photographing these environments is not the easiest thing to do.

Our initial planning was to use this trip to produce quality photographic material and improve on techniques for future expeditions; it took months of research and study to figure out how to make it work, perfecting my diving techniques and also creating the necessary setup of equipment to achieve the best possible photos.

Small wonder that I had so much difficulty to find literature or talk to people who already ventured into this kind of mission, as not many have quality material to show from cave environments. After talking to some friends and gather valuable tips, I decided the type of equipment I wanted and the kind of setup to use for image capture – but I won´t enter into detail here about techniques and equipment, as this will be the subject of a further article where I intend to dwelve deeper on what´s needed to perform this kind of photography.

The main conduit of the cave is well cabled and signaled, with many jumps an areas to explore using a sidemount. What fascinated me most about this cave was that in several spots of the main conduit air pockets in the ceiling create an otherworldly look, with reflections that evade a description in words; I think that my pictures will be more elucidative than my poor writing to describe how beautiful this system is, kilometers of cave to be explored, guaranteed fun for many dives. Using scooters is a good idea if you intend to penetrate deeper into the cave, even for simple dives.

Jackson Blue is a splendid cave with its rather pale rock formations, which render it photogenic. It is located in a Municipal Park with a complete leisure area, changing rooms, playground and barbecue sites, and is filled with tourists on weekends. During summer this area is open to the general public and diversÂ´ access is not permitted through it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; only by boats that can be hired at Cave Adventures. During winter the park is closed to visitors but open to divers who can then enjoy the available infrastructure in its entirety.

They rent doubles, side cylinders and scooters, and take care of refilling. Look for Stacy, one of the owners and wife of the legendary Edd Sorenson â&#x20AC;&#x201C; she will kindly fetch everything you need, including a guide if you donÂ´t know the cave and fancy a guided dive.

It is worth noting that cave diving requires proper training and experience; at the end of this article we provide an infobox about providers of cave diving courses in Brazil, who also offer regular cave diving tour operations. A Little Marvel !! Let´s focus our Divemag first edition test in the hardware which is revolutionizing and – most important – multiplying to an absurd level the gathering of underwater images all across the globe, earning itself the title of a “small but powerful revolutionary” in promoting our activity. After all, every diving boat now has more than a diver capturing images using a GoPro. We will focus the test on the camera´s underwater use only, together with its original u/w case customized with the addition of an adapted flat port, made necessary as the original spherical format lens is not efficient in obtaining underwater images, resulting in blurred photos. It is the world´s most versatile camera thanks to its innovative mounting system, proven durability and compact size. And HD HERO 2 surpasses its predecessor with several technological updates. The new processor in HD HERO 2 has a processing power twice as good, making full use of a new 11 megapixel high performance sensor which offers twice as much image detail and professional performance, even in low light conditions. To further explore HD HERO 2´s image processing capability, a wide angle lens twice as sharp as the previous model was developed; it is however still not able of making sharp images underwater. GoPro is planning to issue earlier this year a purpose-built underwater case, of which I was fortunate to see a prototype, and I presume it will be the best option for water use, replacing all the other customized options, including the one I had the opportunity of testing.

Tests were undertaken in a variety of situations, in an attempt to encompass the maximum possible range of real-life uses. Bright Light Environment: Pool, ocean and freshwater in shallow depths of 2 to 5 meters with and without corrective red filters, with head mount and underwater camera case mount. Low light environment: Used in deepwater shipwrecks with limited visibility and one external head light (Sola 1200 from Light & Motion) Adapted in the underwater case using a triple clamp from Ultralight

Conclusion: In good visibility and shallow water conditions the quality of movies shot is fantastic, with image capture good enough for a documentary. The camera reads light correctly and most of the time the image is well balanced. A red filter is of great help to restore color, but sometimes, in situations with plenty of sunlight and shallow water (1 to 2 meters) the filter´s color correction becomes just too evident. In deeper (4 to 5 meters) blue water, however, it tends to balance color better. Using the filter in depths below 10 meters does not offer any apparent gain, and using artificial lighting is recommended. For the test I used a Sola 1200 light head from Light & Motion, which generated a uniform, strong light. For those willing to sport a thin set this is the best option, and for a more professional result the use of two light heads is recommended.

The biggest problem detected were the vignettes around the image corners; even using the manufacturer´s recommended “Backscatter” configuration of 1080p for the flat port case the vignettes continued to “decorate” the edges of the movie frames. It is of course possible to solve the problem when editing, but it´s in any case a negative point.

A disadvantage of GoPro in relation to other cameras is the impossibility of making manual adjustments for exposure and white balance, since the camera does everything automatically. hence you gain practicality and speed, but lacks fine tuning capability. It is perfect though for those situations where image gathering would not occur due to diving conditions, or to film and take photos at the same time. In low light and dense suspension the cameraÂ´s auto reading is not entirely reliable, generating noise and a high ISO in images hot outside the light focus, in wide angle. Frame capture Frame capture underwater is rather limited given the lack of manual adjustments and flash trigger. It serves only for a register or timelap to illustrate and enhance a video.

Industrial fishing is highly predatory and entirely unsustainable. A commercial fishing boat which goes out to sea either with immense nets destroying the ocean bottom, or with longlines extending for hundreds of miles, returns to port with tons and tons of sharks – in itself an absolute biological barbarism.

Even more absurd and criminal is when these boats go out for finning, or capturing the sharks, bringing them aboard and then cutting out their fins, throwing the animal´s body back into the water, often still alive. Whoever thinks that this is an “Asian problem” is totally offbase. It happens worldwide, even here in Brazil, with confiscations happening everywhere. As an example we can mention the case of SIGEL fishing company from Belém: 24 tons of dried fins seized. This amounts to some 350,000 to 450,000 dead sharks. That´s right: almost half a million individuals killed. In a single shipment of a single company. Now imagine the volumes of illegal cargo entering the market without being detected. A civil lawsuit pushes the issue in court and the requested fine amounts to R$ 1 billion and three-hundred thousand (almost US$ 720 million).

Hong Kong is really the great trade hub for shark fins. But everyone, including Brazil, illegally ships it there. Besides the ethical question or food options – whether sharks and rays should or shouldn´t be used as food – other factors bring this issue to the forefront and urgently require everyone to take a stand and challenge the paradigm. It is inadmissible to bring to extinction species on top of the oceans´ food webs. Our planet survives thanks to the oxygen generated by phytoplankton in our shared oceans. Decapitating the top of the ocean food chain will bring a cascading effect, a veritable chaos in the marine environment. This can bring irreversible damage to the fragile conditions that sustain life on Earth. It is easy to hypothesize about the eventual destruction of our planet by a meteor or alien invasion. It is however humankind which is bringing it about. And all because of things as stupid as chicken broth with bits of shredded shark fin. It is because of the importance of this issue that the Divers for Sharks Project has been fighting in several fronts for the preservation of sharks and rays. The project´s actions span from environmental education aimed at the younger generations through the SharKids initiative, civil lawsuits against the illegal fishing crimes, campaigning and awareness events to de-mystify sharks at universities, schools, clubs and meetings, as well as through pacific demonstration in public places such as beaches. Mini courses on basic shark biology and workshops are also part of the project´s portfolio.

Tackling the challenge of shark conservation it would be foolish to ignore the modern tools and means for communication. It was with great joy that I got the news about this new and innovative electronic magazine. More so as it came with the invitation to write about my passion, free diving. And even more with DIVEMAG´s commitment to be my sponsor in trainings, competitions and courses of this amazing sport. To do something new, in line with the magazine´s flair, I´ll be bringing you, readers, updated information on techniques, places and people who practice diving bin its purest and most challenging form. We´ll mix our chat here at Divemag with techniques, equipment and interviews which will show you new faces and results in free diving. To begin with, an interview with Erin Magee, highlighted as a revelation for the Americas in 2011 as she became the deepest female diver of the region in the most classic category of free diving, the one everyone practices, going down and back with the thrust of your legs helped by fins. Erin is the current American record holder in the category with the mark of 80 meters. She is a PADI and PFI (Performance Freediving International) instructor, one of the most respected schools worldwide. I had the great pleasure of meeting her two years ago and also of being able to train with her, following her rapid evolution.

Carol: when did you begin to dive? Erin: I started practicing free diving when I worked as a Dive Instructor in the Florida Keys (USA). I was tired of all that gear and though that free diving really made more sense to me. I started trying to go deeper than a recreational diver, and then took my first course with PFI (Performance Freediving International), which made me reach the level I´m at today. Carol: how did you begin to practice snorkeling? Erin: Well, my first experience with snorkeling was 7 or 8 years ago, during a family trip. I was used to see my father and brother diving to the bottom and I always tried but couldn´t get as deep as them. Nowadays I can pass them. Carol: When and how did you become a PFI Freediving Instructor? Erin: I had already worked as a dive instructor for a few years, so to me it was a natural transition, especially as I preferred free diving, so the idea of working with this subject attracted me. Even more so as it gave me the freedom to travel to all kinds of places where there´s amazing diving. Carol: Did you discover your deep diving abilities at the PFI course? Erin: When I did my first course I did what most students do, about 100 feet (30 meters) and a four-minute apnea in the pool. But definitely it opened my eyes for the possibilities of going well beyond that. Carol: Tell us a bit about your history as a diver.

Erin: After working at the Keys (Florida, USA) and taking the PFI intermediate course, I decided to follow the Instructor program. It was during this program that I really became motivated to start competing and going deeper. I enrolled in my first competition in 2009, when I reached 180 feet (55 meters) for the first time. After achieving that mark I became so motivated to go deeper that I started to think about the possibility of reaching the National American Record, which was held by Tania Streeter since 2001, of 70 meters in Constant Ballast with Fins. It looked real deep, but I thought I could always try and see where I got.

I ended up reaching that record with a 71 meters dive in the last day of the competition in the Cayman Islands in 2012. This last year I was able to beat my own record four times, reaching 80 meters. I am really excited with this dive and I´m hoping to try further this year.

Carol: Which are your next challenges? Erin: I´ll probably continue on this discipline and try go deeper. I´d really like to reach 90 meters. Carol: What´s your limit?

Medieval Justice for Dolphin Defenders In July 13, 1699, an English widow named Felicity Common was accused of witchcraft by a neighbor. British authorities threw her on the Thames River, to check if she would swim or drown. If she swam, she would be considered guilty, and if she drowned, she would be innocent. The rationale would be that if God rejected her it would be due to her guilt, preventing her from drowning. The British Courts however were more than just and granted her wish of being thrown in the Thames a second time on July 19th. Unfortunately for the Common widow, she didnÂ´t drown, but to shed any doubt she was again thrown in the river on her back and, again, the stubborn woman was rejected by God, and once again swam to the river bank, to the arms of her captors. She was taken to the Tower of London and there remained until the 27th of December. Two days after Christmas, she was buried alive, as a convicted witch. In Taiji, this week, Dutch citizen Erwin Vermeulen was taken into custody by the Police of Wakayama Prefecture. They charged him with aggression because an employee of the Dolphin Resort Hotel claimed that Erwin pushed him. Erwin denies this accusation, and there are no witnesses to affirm the accuserÂ´s story. In contrast, the Cove Guardian Rosie Kunneke, from South Africa, was recently beaten in front of witnesses by a Taiji fisherman. The man was only interrogated and released. Apparently, in Japan there are two different measures in relation to the law, according to your race and nationality. According to Japanese law, Erwin can remain in jail for up to 23 days. He has no permission to receive visits and he still had not been granted permission to speak to the Embassy of the Netherlands.

In Japan, a person is guilty until proven innocent and sentencing by Japanese courts is about 98%, because the majority of these sentences are based in confessions obtained during these 23 days in which a person is detained for interrogation. Therefore, the options are either remain in jail for 23 days before you have any access to a lawyer and then, finally, be formally accused and wait for a trial in which your chances of being declared guilty are 98%, or to declare yourself guilty. So the logic is that it´s better to declare your guilt and display remorse for your “crime” instead of defending your innocence. It also seems that they chose Erwin, a Dutch citizen, because two of the Sea Shepherd ships are registered in the Netherlands, and this is a message for the Dutch to bow to Japanese demands to stop Sea Shepherd´s activities in Antarctica against Japanese illegal whaling. Erwin´s ordeal is not as drastic as having to drown to show your innocence, but the same kind of authoritarian logic prevails. In other words, regardless of proof or lack thereof, and based on an accusation of a single person, Erwin can expect “justice” for him only if he declares himself guilty. This will obviously give the Japanese the proof they´ve been desperately trying to establish that the Cove Guardians are a violent, criminal group. Erwin has refused to talk to the police because he was denied due legal process. As such, he will be detained for the entire “legal” period allowed for by Japanese law, without formal accusations. In exchange for his compassion for dolphins and his non-violent opposition to the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japanese police decided it is time to “go medieval” with the Cove Guardians. Considering the cruel barbarism of the defenseless dolphins of Taiji, this is not surprising at all.

Which are the most interesting places you have already visited, and which one stood out in terms of photo opportunities? My work as nature cinematographer and photographer allowed me to visit really incredible places, each one with its unique beauty. Places like New Zealand, Fernando de Noronha, Botswana among others are excellent for landscape and wildlife photography. But one particular place IÂ´m definitely in love with is the Galapagos. Photo opportunities are neverending there, both above as under water.

Essentials Diver This intermediate level of continued education is designed to allow certified divers to improve on their diving performance, review and practice the essentials learned in any IANTD dive program. Techniques and knowledge acquired in this program prepare the diver for more advanced dives. Essentials Divers is recommended for those divers willing to improve their performance and competence during their dives. This program does not qualify the diver to go deeper than his previous certification.

Who can teach this program? An Advanced EANx Instructor or with a higher degree and certified as IANTD Essentials Diver. A rebreather instructor is required for a diver to be certified as rebreather diver at this level.

Prerequisites • Open Water (Nitrox) Diver certification or equivalent • Minimum age of 15 years with authorization from parents or legal guardian, or a minimum of 12 years to qualify as Junior Diver, or 18 years without previous consent. Program limits: • No dive to be conducted in depths further than the student´s qualification • All dives to emphasize teamwork and interaction with one´s buddy

In 1959, the National Diving Patrol, a program to certify divers as instructors after a revision of procedures, was renamed as the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) and incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization. The first instructor training course – ITC was undertaken for BRIGHT FUTURE six days at the Shamrock Hotel, Houston, with 72 candidates and 8 instructors from the US and Canada; only 53 candidates graduated. This was the first international instructor certification course in history and was a landmark for a whole new era in modern sport diving.
