Dear readers,
DiVEMAG international Dive Magazine
By Divers, for Divers!!
EDITOR KADU PINHEIRO
15. SAN ANDRÉS
We are closing a cycle with the 12th issue in 2012. It was a time span of much effort and dedication by the DIVEMAG team, to fine tune the course and consolidate the magazine, which nowadays is undoubtedly the greatest communication media for diving in Brazil. I would like to thank all our partners, advertisers and contributors for making our dream come true, and in such a short time. We extend here our best Holiday wishes; may the next year continue filling us with challenges and news. In this issue we went to San Andrés in the Colombian Caribbean to brig mesmerizing photos of the dives in this region of the Caribbean, traditionally a destination which is much sought-after by Brazilians. Colombia has grown and invested in tourism over the last few years, becoming one of the best Caribbean destinations, leaving nothing to desire in relation to other traditional destinations.
33. AKTUN HA
Also the first of a series of articles about out expedition to the Yucatán Peninsula region in Mexico, seeking the cenotes and their secrets, with breathtaking pictures and a bit of Mayan history and culture. A different and charm-filled portfolio by a photographer and shark aficionada who left her career as a model to support an environmental cause: Raquel Rossa shows her work and her sensibility to our readers. All this and much more in the pages of DIVEMAG.

Invited by the Colombian government we went to visit the dive operation of Decameron Aquarium, a 100% diving DNA resort at San Andrés Island, Colombia. San Andrés was settled during the 17th century by English immigrants and Jamaican woodcutters who took a large number of slaves to the island. After centuries of fighting for the island´s possession, involving the Spaniards, English and Dutch, the question was settled in 1822 with the archipelago becoming a Colombian territory; that much notwithstanding, San Andrés has very little to do with the Colombian people and habits; The language spoken by locals is creole, dollars are normally accepted in every shop and it is a duty free area.

Encircled by a natural coral barrier, where a healthy and complete ecosystem makes divers from around the world party, the island is small and boasts several dive sites around it, most of which concentrated on the western side which is more sheltered. In the inner parts dives are done in constant depths ranging from 15 to 35 meters depending on the site chosen. Off the southeastern side, dives are along walls which begin around 15 meters and descend to depths in excess of 200m.

SOME DIVE SITES: La Trinca: it is characterized by a dive passing along three sites in sequence: La Piramide, Bajo Camilo and Palacio de las Rayas. Basically these are three shallow dive sites, ideal for novices, with lots of fish and small schools. It´s used often for discovery and checkout dives.

Palacio de las Chermas: A big wall dive. This site´s main attraction is in a crevice which begins a little beyond 30 meters and which upon entering one can see a rock which, according to locals, would be Neptune´s throne. The rock is wide and smooth, so it is worth relaxing, getting comfy and feeling like the king of the seas! El Cantil de Nirvana: one of the rare dive sites in San Andrés where you can see large and pelagic fish. Punta Padi: a site with several giant barrel sponges, where a child could easily fit.

A mandatory night dive! Blue Hole: one of the best dives in San Andrés, made of a small canyon which opens to a spectacular wall, with frequent sightings of Caribbean reef sharks leaving the canyon. During our dive we also had the opportunity to see a large group of bottlenose dolphins which circled and played around us during more than half the dive time. A tip: do not go out in large groups if you wish to have a more intimate encounter with sharks; large groups with lots of bubbles scare away the animals.

DECAMERON AQUARIUM
It has an excellent infrastructure for the diver. Almost all apartments face the sea and it has excellent restaurants with a diversified cuisine, in the all-inclusive system. You just need to make reservations in the previous day for the restaurant of your choice. Options vary from seafood to an Asian with Chinese and Thai dishes. The dive shop is inside the hotel, with daily trips to several sites in the region depending on weather conditions. Their divemasters are well prepared and extend the hospitality of Nelson, the dive center owner and an old acquaintance of Brazilian divers. In the evenings the hotel also sports a night club which is usually full and is guaranteed fun. But if the aim is to relax and read a good book after the dives, calm places with shadow aren´t hard to find.

WHEN TO GO: Being outside the hurricane belt, San Andrés can be visited year-round, and water temperature does not change much, staying around 28°C and with visibility between 20 and 30 meters. Although it is not directly affected by hurricanes, during the season between June and October rains and wind are more frequently experienced and rain squalls might happen.

BEYOND DIVING: San Andrés is a small island, so in an afternoon you can go all around it. You can get to know museums, some caves, etc., but the main attraction is the Hoyo Soplador, at the southern tip of the island, aldo known as the Colombian geyser. It is a hole carved in the rock by wave action and which depending on the swell can spout water up to more than five meters high! Another mandatory attraction in San Andrés is a boat trip to the minuscule islands nearby, Aquario and Haynes Cay, and Johnny Cay in the sequence. Aquario is nothing more than a sandbank with some three bungalows on it. Haynes Cay is an islet off Aquario which can be reached by swimming, and Johnny Cay is a really pretty island which takes some 15 minutes to circle on foot.

Unless you are with a group and arrange for an exclusive package, fixing things there is a bit difficult. Island tours, boat trips and dive outings are all in the morning. Just like other Caribbean islands, San Andrés became famous for weddings done above and under water; there´s a law allowing for foreigners to marry by presenting their passports, and it enjoys a duty free status, becoming much coveted to shop for imported goods, highlights being an amazing amount of booze, electronics and perfumes found at the shopping center and the Peatonal, a walkway where some of the most luxurious shops in town are located.

Use the stopover in Bogotá to do a city tour. Zona Rosa is a very agreeable leisure-oriented barrio with a climate and looks of Campos do Jordão in Brazil – a great place to find dinner and extend your evening. Do visit the Montserrate hill with the funicular, a kind of vertical “train” reaching up to one of the highest points in town. Also visit the Museo del Oro, a museum chockablock with gold artifacts portraying all the culture and beliefs of the ancient peoples who lived in the region.

To tour San Andrés there are innumerable agencies offering several kinds of tours, but you can also opt for renting a scooter or a golf cart to go around the island; it might be much more fun this way. If you like coffee, Colombia is a famed exporter, but ask for the stronger brands which are more agreeable to the Brazilian taste.

The State of Quintana Roo, where a good chunk of Mexico´s most famous and beautiful beaches are located, is bound in a veil of mysticism. Not only due to its Mayan past, but also to its unique geographical location. The entire peninsula sits over a maze of underground rivers and caves, which up to this day haven´t been explored or mapped in their entirety.
DESTINATION |Mexico - Cenotes | Aktun Ha | Text and Photos: Kadu Pinheiro Cenotes, as the entrances to these underground tunnel systems are called, are small openings which let one glimpse at the crystal-clear waters in these arteries which for thousands of years have provided freshwater to the entire region. Not by chance the Mayas believed that cenotes were the passage to Xibalba or Xib´alb´a, which in their mythology means the underworld governed by gods of sickness and death, respectively Hun-Camé and Vucub-Camé.

Our adventure begins in Tulum, Mexico, considered by many as one of underwater cave paradises in the world. With less than 22,000 inhabitants and located south of the Yucatán Peninsula, in Quintana Roo State, some 12o Km from Cancun and 50 Km from Playa del Carmen, Tulum is renowned for its dense forests and a unique, exclusive archaeological site with Mayan ruins. Surely it´s not every day that you get the opportunity to dive and explore in a place like this.

More or less 13,000 years ago, at the end of the glacial era, sea level was 65 meters lower than today. All the region of the Yucatán in the Gulf of Mexico which is currently the bottom of the sea was dry land. Currently flooded caves were dry then and some were inhabited by humans and animals. With the rise in the Earth´s temperature, icebergs started to melt elevating sea levels by several meters in a very short time, which resulted in flooding of all the existing caves in the region.

With the exploration of caves and submerged cenotes, many mysteries surfaced, and have been unveiled over time by diving and archaeology teams, bringing that mysterious episode of History to light. Besides fossils and animal bones, many human skeletons were also found in the cenotes, since the Mayans undertook burial ceremonies and sacrifices at these sacred places.

Cenotes were also explored by the Spaniards during settlement times as sources of freshwater, with several farmsteads and convents being built in their vicinity.

Today cenotes are one of the main attractions in the region, visited by tech divers from several countries who get there to dive and explore the region, and also recreational divers who experience the sensation of cave diving doing guided visits to the cavern zone of some of the best-known cenotes, drawn there by the rich local history and natural beauty of the decorations present inside these caves, such as stalactites and other typical forms, besides Mayan artifacts, human bones and extinct animals. And in the center of it all is the town of Tulum, where our team set up the operations base to get to know all the mysteries and beauty of the Xibalba world.

At Tulum there are many options of things to do, such as snorkeling the cenotes, bike rides, visiting X-Caret (an aquatic park located some 70 Km from Cancun), jeep trips, kitesurf, visiting the Mayan ruins, besides paradisiacal beaches with warm and crystal-clear waters, lots of sun and, of course, lots of cave diving.

Almost all of the Tulum region is “flooded below” by freshwater. You can say that the town was built above an enormous system of decorated caves, as in the Yucatán region there are innumerable cenotes with many systems. Up to now more than 730 Km of passages were already explored and cabled. The systems are Ox Bel Ha (currently the largest system in the world, with 173 Km in length), Nohoch Na Chich and Sac Actum, or cenotes known as Gran Cenote, Car Wash and Calavera. There are also lesser known ones, such as Chan Hoi, Vaca Ha and Tortugas among others.

Tulum is a cave park. Today there are 172 systems and more than 700 cave entrances catalogued only in this township. According to Robbie Schmittner, explorer and owner of the Xibalba Dive Center operator and lodge, this number can easily double. Most caves have crystal-clear water where visibility can reach 100 meters. Water temperature is agreeable; a semi-dry suit is more than enough to prevent getting cold during long dives. Most caves have an almost zero flow, shallow depths and simple navigation. A good part of the lesser-known cenotes still have exploration cables and are not as well signposted as the Florida caves, which makes the company of a knowledgeable guide both convenient and recommended. All this makes us sure that this is one of the best dive spots in the world.

Freshwater temperature varies between 25 and 26°C, and in saltwater it can vary between 28 and 29°C. The halocline is present in several cenotes, a phenomenon where freshwater meets saltwater allowing an image and sensations both unique and indescribable. The inner beauty of the caves is an unanimity among specialists of this kind of dive. There are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, millenary artifacts and formations, in lavishly decorated salons. A beauty we will never be able to describe in words, and which marvelous nature the images in this article might help bring a glimpse to you, readers.

The main objective of this expedition was to get to know and bring back to the Brazilian reader information and photos of the cenotes which are very little publicized by media given the technical and logistical difficulty to obtain quality records portraying the full beauty of this unique and immaculate environment.

THE CAR WASH OR AKTUN HA CENOTE The first cenote we will describe in this series of articles is undoubtedly one of the most famous and most visited in the region, also often used for training by cave dive instructors, including many Brazilians. It´s a rather popular spot for leisure and snorkeling, as well as for diving in its cavern zone (where there is constant presence of natural light), located at Coba Road, some 15 minutes from Tulum town center. The cenote is a few meters from the road and is extremely accessible. Consequently, Car Wash was one of the first cenotes to be found and explored by divers. Its uncommon English name comes from the fact that years ago local taxi drivers used the place as a quick washing stop for their cars. It´s Mayan name, Aktun Ha, means Water Cave.

Car Wash is a classical cave with two entrances: Upstream and Downstream, with a large natural pool separating the two. Carven dives can be made in the two mouths, but Upstream is by far the most pretty and decorated of the two. There is no permanent cable in the cave area, therefore your guide should use a primary spool to guide you during the dive. During the summer months there´s normally a proliferation of algae at the surface of the cenote, sometimes several meters thick, which considerably reduces visibility in the external area of the cave. This algal layer is warmer and offers a unique, surreal view. Under this layer the water is crystal-clear and colder. Sunlight passing through the algae delivers a very pretty greenish hue.

A diver entering the “surface organic sediments cloud” at Car Was
The cave entrance is very big and gets a lot of sunlight, and a tangle of dead trees in front of it creates a flooded forest effect. Looking back and out of the cave, through the silhouette of the trees, against a green backlight, you have an impressive view, much recorded by photographers. The rest of the cavern zone is very well decorated with many different types of formations. Already inside the cave, after a short navigation one reaches the mouth of another cenote nearby, Car Wash´s “postcard”, the Hall of Tears, an ample space entirely decorated and which viewing can actually entice tears of emotion from the visitor for its beauty and delicateness.
To reach this hall a guide is needed, as there is no indication of the entrance to the site, and at the right spot of the cable there is a mark which only the guides recognize; from there a spool is passed until the entrance of the hall. See why you will need a local guide to visit it? After this hall a rather narrow conduit begins, leading further into the cenote.

The cenote has 18 meters maximum depth. • In Tulum there are rental options for doubles and tanks prepared for side mount with DIN valves; • To enter parks and farms giving access to cenotes, one should pay the admission fees varying from US$ 10 to US$ 20; • Besides taxes, a local guide is mandatory; • Insect repellent and sunscreen are indispensable; • Be careful while driving, as Mexican road police has a propensity of finding reasons to fine and raise trouble; • Brazilians need an entry visa (easy to get through the air carrier of choice) or show a US Visa, which replaces it.

Special thanks to friends, buddies and models: João Paulo Pavani Franco (Johnny) and João Manassés, Adriano Cipriano Buga, and Rodrigo Garcia who helped me during the long photo sessions, holding and positioning additional strobes and posing for the pictures illustrating this article.
We strongly recommend Xibalba (with a very suggestive name), in the market since 2003 and considered one of the best structured shops in the region. Robbie Schmittner, a German living in Mexico for more than 15 years, is responsible for the dive operation and lodge which boasts comfortable air-conditioned rooms, wi-fi and pool. Robbie, together with Steve Bogaerts, is one of the pioneer explorers of the region, where in recent years they had the opportunity to connect seven different systems; their main objective is to connect the Dos Ojos and Sac Actun systems.

Used by several companies involved in oil exploration, or by navies around the world, these devices have in the course of time added safety to the activity of professional and military divers, since they undertake the deepest and most risky dives. However, the technology and concept of these submarines are still little known to most people. It is important to know that the unmanned underwater vehicles can be divided basically in two classes:
52

TECHNOLOGY |Unmanned Submarine Vehicles | Text e Photos: Alexandre Vasconcelos
international Dive Magazine
ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).
AUV (Aut么nomous Underwater Vehicle).
Commonly used by companies to supervise and assemble equipment at great depths, these vehicles are remotely operated by a person aboard a ship. Nowadays one can undertake a ROV operator course in Brazil. They are also used for inspection and diving in waters deemed contaminated or even in nuclear reactors (in this case, the ROV cannot be reused after being brought back from the site).
Their main characteristic is the fact that they can navigate without the need of an operator. These devices are capable of undertaking predefined tasks in an autonomous manner. In short, it is a submarine robot programmed for a certain task. Its navigation is achieved mainly through acoustic sensors and compasses.
The main feature of these devices is their physical attachment to the surface through an umbilical cable, which transmits energy and commands to the vehicles.
53
Unlike ROVs, these devices are used more and more by the military-industrial complex.

TECNOLOGIA TECHNOLOGY |Veículos |Unmanned Submarinos Submarine nãoVehicles Tripulados| |Text Texto e Photos: e fotos:Alexandre AlexandreVasconcelos Vasconcelos In 2009 the US Navy estimated that there were some 630 AUVs worldwide. Defense experts estimate currently that the AUV market will grow exponentially until 2020, attaining a total of 1,400 AUVs produced to meet the growing global demand. Navies are responsible for approximately 50% of all the investments for AUV development. Military AUVs can be used in intelligence, reconnaissance and monitoring missions. Just like to unmanned aircraft used in Iraq and Afghanistan, AUVs can be utilized in patrols both for coastal and offshore waters. The use of AUVs leads to a natural tendency of replacing manned craft and the main reason is the cost/benefit ratio. An AUV is advantageous for being much cheaper than a submarine, so much so that several can be bought with the cost of a single conventional or nuclear sub, and these may cover a much larger area for much less, sending patrol results by satellite to a land station. Besides military applications, AUVs have been ever more required for oceanographic missions, monitoring marine biology and water quality, mapping the submerged bottoms and locating objects underwater. Another important area is the inspection of oil and gas pipes and other submerged structures used by the oil industry.

The sensors and the control system of Pirajuba allow it to control its depth and undertake preprogrammed maneuvers from a straight line run to more complex trajectories involving curves, gyres and the autonomous return to the starting point. Such tasks were achieved by the prototype with success. During the runs Pirajuba was followed by the dive team which, besides filming, was charged with an eventual search and recovery of the prototype. Results were so good that the technology surrounding Pirajuba was considered for the development of a smart torpedo. The Pirajuba project signals a new era in the national development of technologies for the naval industry. The utilization of AUVs and ROVs reduces human intervention in military or shelf tasks, letting diving be ever more a sport. See the test on video: http://youtu.be/Pa2tsPIVsZU
Recently the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (Poli-USP) tested the first Brazilian project for an Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle, the AUV Pirajuba, at he coast of Angra dos Reis. Developed by Professor Ettore A. de Barros, the tests were undertaken at the installations of the Navy School of Angra dos Reis and relied on support from students, divers and Brazilian Navy personnel. AUV Pirajuba, which means “yellow fish” in the Tupi language, withstood a series of tests which began in the Navy School pool and ended with a series of runs through Angra dos Reis Bay.

Bonito, Misterious Lagoon Freediving | Text: Carolina Schrappe and Photos: Adriana Brandão In this issue I thought of valuing our country a bit more and writing about one of the most beautiful places in Brazil, as the name implies: Bonito (beautiful). Wait – diving in Mato Grosso do Sul State? Yes, it´s right: we can dive in Bonito. Since 2003 Lagoa Misteriosa – the Mysterious Lagoon was closed to visitors, and almost a year ago it reopened with some restrictions on diving. For a long while I had the wish to dive this marvelous spot again, where I even gave freediving classes. The purpose of the trip was exactly to verify the freediving conditions at the Lagoon so planning for future courses and training at this site could become feasible. Getting there I found a surprising structure and logistics for a place where almost nothing as such existed in the past. In the access to the lagoon there is a short trail and 70-meter-long stairs, and lookouts along the way. At the start of the descent of the stairs it is already possible to contemplate the crystal-clear and unbelievably blue waters of the lagoon. For SCUBA diving I found excellent quality gear ready for use, besides a cable system allowing heavy gear to be taken down easily and be lifted up right after the dive, saving the diver and guide from carrying all that weight in their backs as happened years ago. There by the lagoon we can count on all available safety equipment – DAN oxygen kit and envelope-style rescue by cable.

FREE DIVE | Bonito, Brazil – Mysterious Lagoon | By Carolina Schrappe
The lagoon has a complete receptive with trained guides to greet the tourist, an adequate structure with clean toilets, and all the safety needed to practice free, recreational or tech diving. Although it only harbors two species of small fish and a freshwater eel, the location, fallen trees on the bottom, water color, relief and the peace of this place make this dive an unforgettable experience. The baptism is an excellent option for those willing to experience diving in calm and crystalline waters. There are several versions for the mystery in the site´s name. Besides its excellent visibility the Mysterious Lagoon holds a mystery which is its still unknown depth. It has been explored down to 220 meters without seeing the bottom. Which would be its actual depth? What does it look like beyond 220 meters? Is there any living creature in those depths? These are all unanswered questions. Other story told there is that the lagoon was so named because during winter local people were able to see a beautiful blue lake amidst the wild jungle, and during summer it mysteriously disappeared in the vegetation. This happens still today, due to the proliferation of algae in the lagoon which cover its surface and camouflage it into the surrounding vegetation.

Another version being told is that the lagoon was haunted as there one could hear voices, supposedly from people no one could see. Another legend, as the sound so heard is the wind spiraling down and bouncing off the walls of the lagoon, creating weird sounds. Also there are nests of vultures which mate there and get their cries confused with human voices. Another site not to be missed is the Mimosa Farmstead, which until 1988 was solely destined to cattle ranching and nowadays is one of the main tourist attractions in the region. I did a forest trail there viewing native wildlife such as peccaries, agouti, capybara, and several species of birds. During this walk I got to Reguladores Mares know and swim at beautiful waterfalls.

After the tour the visitor is received with a homemade lunch with typical regional cuisine, prepared in a wood stove and with an incredible taste. Not to mention the irresistible desserts, especially the famous Estância Mimosa condensed milk sweets. The place also allows for a good rest on hammocks made of cow hide, or for those more active not willing to lose any time a horseback ride through the farm in the afternoon. Floating the Prata River is also one of the main attractions of Bonito. In this tour one can do a trail and soon after a floating beginning at the Olho D´Água River source down to the Prata River. This tour takes some two hours in a crystal-clear river, where using fins is not allowed to prevent damaging the environment. I was impressed with the quantity, size and diversity of fish found during the floating, not to mention the surprise in an encounter with a caiman which made me realize how living in harmony is possible when the ecosystem is well-balanced. As in the Mimosa farmstead here a delicious homemade lunch is served.

HOW TO GET THERE
WHERE TO STAY
TOURS NOT TO BE MISSED
To arrive at this paradise in the middle of Brazil there are several options. You can fly with Trip which has regular flights, or use charters with TAM or Gol arriving at Bonito. For those willing to drive there is a long trip, but the road is quite easy despite the 1,100 Km from Curitiba or 1,170 from São Paulo.
There are several lodges and hotels in the Bonito region. We chose to stay at the Hotel Pousada Águas de Bonito, due to their very interesting concept of integration with nature. They are in constant expansion with the building of ten more apartments and a Meeting Room where small events can be held. It has a TV room with fireplace, games table and reading space where several publications about Mato Grosso do Sul can be found, besides those by regional writers.
Mimosa Farmstead, with trails, waterfall bathing and country lunch; floating at the Prata River; diving at Mysterious Lagoon; visiting Buraco das Araras (macaw´s hole) and the Boa Project.
Acquanauta Dive Center – www.acquanauta.com.br – plans this type of trip for divers and non-diving companions.
DiVEMAG international Dive Magazine
It also has a very special roofed leisure area with heated pool and spa, dry sauna, games room, home theater room, toys´ depot and massage hall, all with a view to the gardens.
WEATHER CONDITIONS Bonito has a warm and rainy climate between the months of October and March. Between June and August it is dry and cooler (for local standards, that is). The most recommended season to visit is between December and March, as it´s the rainy season and vegetation is all green, providing plenty of sustenance for the wildlife which the becomes easier to see.

On December 1st, 2012 a workshop was held for the dive industry, aimed at improving recreational dive safety in Brazil. It is estimated that in the last 40 years more than 500,000 divers were certified in the country and that more than 20,000 new ones are certified every year. In 2012 there were six fatal accidents with Brazilian divers, an increase by six in relation to the average fatality rate of the last 20 years. Aiming at reducing fatality risk, DAN Brazil, a non-governmental nonprofit organization, and the four largest dive training agencies operating in Brazil (IANTD, NAUI, PADI and SSI) met to develop advanced methods to report and prevent dive accidents. Instruction and orientation before going into the pool
DiVEMAG international Dive Magazine
There is no greater pleasure than being able to introduce our diving activities to children, through the PADI Bubblemaker program which was developed especially to fulfill this mission and acquaint our kids with gear, some diving routines and mainly get them to experience in a safe and controlled manner the sensation of diving on their own in a pool or in the sea – “on their own” being just a way of saying it as they will always be accompanied by responsible instructors. I took my son to take the course at the Diving College, and although he´d already experienced diving a few times, hanging from my octopus, due to his size he had never tried a full gear. He was marveled and entirely fulfilled; children have an indescribable easiness and relaxation, and with some five minutes of instruction went on diving as if they´ve been doing it for ten years already, leaving a full class of basic students taking a class in the pool totally flabbergasted. Consider giving this gift to your son or nephew, several PADI dive centers have instructors able to offer this program.
Note how the kids seem “little at ease”!

South Australia, June 2010. A large stain formed under the crystal-clear waters of the Neptune Island bay and a gigantic dorsal fin slashed the waterline. Despite the 10°C and the strong winds at the surface, I got into the cage and went down for what would be one of the most memorable encounters of my life: to be face to face with a great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias.
The immediate sensation was that the blood flowing through my arteries and veins was doing so in slow motion, as if about to freeze. A knot tied up instantaneously in my throat. In seconds my ventilation difficulties vanished and my body adapted to the mere 14°C of the water temperature, making my cardio-respiratory frequency go down, even with the high adrenaline discharge. Two females approximately five meters long and a smaller male, with his four meters, circled the cage in the gelid South Australian waters. The presence of the great whites in these seas is guaranteed due to the fur seal colonies – among the favorite prey of the largest ocean predator. The peaceful and extremely safe look, adding to the perfect hydrodynamics of the powerful shark, with its enormous fins, besides exerting a hypnotizing effect over me almost resulted in a memorable hypothermia! The scary thing though is to think that a scene like this could have happened millions of years ago and, unfortunately, nowadays is threatened with an end.

Worldwide between 70 and 100 million sharks are killed every year. Although there are no official estimates, this massacre continues to grow due to the demand driven by the Asian market seeking shark by-products. The cruel practice of finning is decimating shark populations worldwide. In finning, the commercially-prized fins are removed from the animal and the rest of the body is thrown back into the sea. Most times the shark is still alive and suffers and agonizingly slow death.

With its fins removed while still alive it takes a very long time to die. According to Otto Bismarck Fazzano Gadig, a Ph.D. in sharks, researcher and professor at the State University of São Paulo, if an animal has all its fins removed the certain death is very slow, by asphyxia, as it loses the ability of swimming and oxygenating. “The chances of survival are nil”, he affirms. The main destination: a shark fin soup dish, a delicacy sold for between US$ 150 and US$ 400 in trendy restaurants of Hong Kong and innumerable other cities around the world. Unfortunately, this barbarism also happens in Brazilian waters.

THE NEW SHIP SAM SIMON IS UNVEILED IN HOBART, TASMANIA
Translated to Portuguese by Raquel Soldera, volunteer at the Sea Shepherd Institute Brazil
After months of speculation, anticipation and the announcement that Los Angeles-based philanthropist and co-creator of TV’s “The Simpsons,” Sam Simon, had donated funds for the purchase of a ship, Sea Shepherd’s new Antarctic patrol ship, the SSS Sam Simon, was unveiled today in the port of Hobart, Tasmania, docked at Macquarie Wharf 1. Her 56-meter hull painted bright white with a classic Sea Shepherd Conservation Society logo on her sides, and displaying a large “S” on her tall black smokestack, the Sam Simon has clearly received several months of careful preparation prior to Sea Shepherd’s most ambitious Antarctic campaign yet. Registered in Melbourne, Australia, the Sam Simon carries a crew of 24 international volunteers, ready to brave the Southern Ocean to seek out and shut down the illegal Japanese whaling fleet. The vessel, retired from service by the Japanese Government in 2010, has since been laid up in Shimonoseki, Japan, alongside the very ships Sea Shepherd will confront this season. Originally built as Seifu Maru in 1993 by IHI shipyard in Tokyo, to a high standard with no expense spared by the Japanese Government, the ice-strengthened steel vessel was operated by the Maizuru Meteorogical Observatory, a department of the Japan Meteorological Agency, out of Kyoto Prefecture. While Sea Shepherd and most of the world agrees that the word “research” has no place in the Institute of Cetacean Research’s (ICR’s) whaling program, Seifu Maru was indeed responsible for a considerable amount of real ocean current data contributing to Japan’s western North Pacific Whaling Program (JARPN). Captain of the Sam Simon, Locky Maclean, stated: “After months of secrecy, it is such a great feeling to finally be able to fly the Sea Shepherd flag from the main mast, and yes, Sea Shepherd now owns a real Japanese research ship!” With four vessels departing for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, Sea Shepherd’s Operation Zero Tolerance aims to find the Japanese whaling fleet and chase it out of the Antarctic Treaty Zone without a single whale killed. It is Sea Shepherd’s most ambitious campaign, and the culmination of a decade’s conservation work in the Antarctic, which has drastically reduced the amount of whales killed by Japan’s ICR. Japan’s ICR has set itself a quota of nearly one thousand minke and 50 fin whales to be culled during the 2012/2013 Australian summer in Antarctica. By Captain Locky MacLean

Born in Caxias do Sul, Raquel Rossa has however long left the Southern highlands. From there she went to S達o Paulo and from the big metropolis to the world it was just a step. She lived in Paris, Milan and New York. Had her face printed in several fashion magazines, besides walking down the catwalks for renowned and vanguardist stylists. Her forays into the Journalism and History university courses helped instigate her communication skills.

INVITED PHOTOGRAPHER | raquel rossa | Besides her work as a model in front of the cameras, Raquel started to play behind the lenses too. From her relationship with the water, started at three years old, to diving, was another jump – literally. About six years ago she started to dive; taking a camera under water was something natural, a happy consequence. Nowadays she travels the world with another purpose: to photograph sharks and fight for their preservation.

INVITED PHOTOGRAPHER | raquel rossa | From Fernando de Noronha, her “beach house”, where she was seasoned in diving, to paradise islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans, to the tropical Caribbean waters or the gelid seas of Southern Australia, Raquel is always seeking new images of the great ocean predators. Her photos are used in campaigning for the sharks. She writes for magazines and websites, gives talks and edits her own website, her “hybrid” as she likes to call it.

Her passion for sharks took her back to the university. In 2008, during a dive with Caribbean reef sharks, in Nassau, Bahamas, the lady had no doubt about what she would do from then on: battle for the sharks. Raquel is moving towards concluding her Biology degree and is developing a project for photo-identification of tiger sharks, her favorite species, so she can become a specialist on these animals. She contributes to two NGOs, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and officially to Divers for Sharks. One of her struggles together with these organizations is to end finning, another to establish a moratorium on shark fishing in Brazilian waters. Above all she strives to dismiss the erroneous, negative myths which clout these magnificent animals, the kings of the ocean.

By the end of the year Raquel will leave for one more expedition in Thailand. She will be seeking images of the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark. In January 2013 she will get to Tiger Beach in Grand Bahama to record tiger sharks for her photo-ID project. She believes that, besides being a less invasive methodology,

In her images Raquel does not use flash, so she can capture the different light nuances, be it in blue or, especially, in black & white. In a partnership with Ellus and with fashion photographer Jacques Dequeker, she released a t-shirt line with shark images. Part of the sales will revert to Sea Shepherd Brazil to be used in shark preservation projects.

Since its inception in 1960, NAUI members have acquired a worldwide reputation, thanks to the leadership in SCUBA diving and quality dive training. The organization continues to attract the best minds in diving due to a continuous emphasis on safety. It is this reputation par excellence which most probably contributes to the decision by more and more divers to opt for NAUI, enjoying therefore this high level of public prestige. Each member should also help to maintain this reputation by working attentively, aiming at improving dive safety through educating others and through their personal commitment towards continued education. Unlike other certifying organizations, NAUI is a worldwide nonprofit, democratic membership association, dedicated to serve the public. Although we come from many cultures and have different viewpoints, our shared values and our common training experience are enough to keep us working together to enhance diving. Many recreational dive practices, from the use of floatability gear to a continuous diver education have achieved results from the efforts of NAUI leaders, striving to ka recreational diving safer. When someone reaches a NAUI leadership position and joins the Association, he/she earns rights and privileges of a member, according to level. Together with these rights there are responsibilities as detailed in the NAUI Standards and Procedures Manual. Every candidate to NAUI leadership should be carefully acquainted with the information contained in this manual, especially the sections where NAUI VALUES and its CREED are described, allowing therefore for a full understanding of what NAUI means to its members. NAUI grows with diversity and the enthusiasm which every new member brings at every level. The discoveries, innovations, ideas and especially the camaraderie with other members are fundamental for the strengthening and superiority of NAUI in the diving community. The choice of becoming a NAUI leader requires much more than simply seeking a certification or personal status. It requires a unique commitment, very much apart from other agencies, because NAUI is truly made of its own members, and through the shaping of its new leaders NAUI maintains its motto: “DIVE SAFETY THROUGH EDUCATION”
