Exchanged and Completed within one week - iIT is possible – WE did it! When the buyers put forward their offer on the Monday, they advised us that their plan was to complete that Friday. Naturally we were very pleased to assist them in doing so, and with the property being vacant, our vendor was also more than happy to help in any way.
d ge ed n ha plet c Ex om &C
We verified the buyers position with their legal representative, Colin Edmunds of Howlett Clarke in Brighton. When asked whether it be possible to complete the sale on the Friday, he replied that he’d rather not as he was off that particular day, therefore Thursday would be better!
It was refreshing to be involved in a transaction with such committed buyers and sellers, with both solicitors, including Leta Kerin of Stephen Rimmer in Eastbourne who was acting for the sellers. We find a number of property transactions proceed on auto pilot mode, with buyers, sellers, solicitors and estate agents all believing a sale needs to take 8 to10 weeks to reach completion. With all avenues of communication rapidly progressing, sadly the home moving process has remained behind the times. This does not always need to be the case, as this scenario has proved. Well done to all involved - let this be a lesson to us all ! (Photo: David Jordan hands the keys over to Patricia Ward)
David Jordan Estate Agents Limited 6 Clinton Place, Seaford, BN25 1NL T: 01323 898414 www.davidjordan.co.uk 4
In June this year I sold my house in Brighton and moved into a flat. Money was in the bank, furniture in store, all I needed was a new home. After exhaustive house viewings wide and far and three abortive offers, this house and Seaford tugged at my heart strings. Once the decision was made, we moved fast. My partner had previously exchanged and completed in one day on a factory unit so this encouraged me to attempt to do the same (although not in one day!) Agreement was obtained from: my solicitor, Colin Edmunds at Quality Solicitors, Howlett Clarke, the vendors and their solicitor, the estate agent, David Jordan of Seaford and Lewes District Council. They all worked in combination to achieve what was thought to be the impossible. In theory everyone can do their own conveyancing, there is no mystery and there is no reason for a sale to take three to six months, providing there is no chain. Searches can be done on-line to check that there is no proposed building nearby, no chemical factories or roads going through the property. Lewes DC offer environmental searches and Land Registry show title and any covenants. A solicitor is required to handle the finances and offer legal peace of mind. From offer to completion, everybody worked together with the sole purpose - a fast sale, and we achieved our goal. On 8th August this year we exchanged and completed on the same day with money in place, legal requirements met and a happy purchaser. Thank you to everyone involved. Patricia Ward
The vendors were also delighted by the exceptional services provided by David and the staff at David Jordan Estate Agents. Also Leta Kerin at Stephen Rimmer LLP Solicitors, who ensured a very smooth transfer of ownership. The process could not have been completed this quickly without the dedicated professionalism of all those involved.

INTERNATIONAL BEACHWATCH SURVEY Councillor Sylvia Dunn joined forces with volunteers, Seaford Town Councillors, Seaford Lifeguards and the Marine Conservation Society to take part in the International Beachwatch Survey at Seaford Bay during the weekend of 17th and 18th September. Despite terrible weather, 24 volunteers arrived to take part in the survey and beach clean. It was estimated that over 40kg of litter, including bottle tops, plastic straps, odd socks, small toys, fishing net, glass and charcoal was cleared from the shingle and responsibly disposed of over the weekend.
Results from the survey will be reported back to the MCS to form part of the national statistics on beach debris. The last international survey showed that over half of the litter collected was plastic, which breaks down into small pieces but takes thousands of years to degrade, remaining in the marine environment.

A Vision for Seaford
What is The Clinton Centre? The Clinton Centre is opposite Tesco Express on the A259 in Seaford. Cross Way Church’s vision is to develop the buildings as a centre for use by the people and organisations of Seaford and as a centre for outreach by the Church, a local ecumenical partnership between the Methodist and United Reformed churches in Seaford. Members of Cross Way believe that the Clinton Centre will cater for a diverse spectrum of groups, both young and old, in the Seaford community The centre is being used now by the church’s own Community Club for 7 to 11 year olds, the church’s Wednesday Fellowship Group and by many local clubs and organisations such as a Youth Drama Group, Fresh Springs, two Line-dancing groups, The WI, dog training group, Seahaven Scouts, gardening club and a number of others. The venue is also used for occasional children’s parties, District and Town Council elections and charity events.
There is a now the need to update the buildings for general community use and to ensure that the facilities meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. So, plans have been prepared by CPL Architects, Eastbourne, for this upgrading. These include good access to the centre from Broad Street North and modern toilet facilities. The kitchen is being enlarged to provide catering facilities for social events and wedding receptions. Work on these improvements is expected to start in the New Year. The church membership has already donated generous sums towards the target of £140,000. Money has been raised by various events, the most recent being a recital by harpist Fiona Hosford. Further events are planned including a concert by the Seaford Silver Band on Saturday, 19 November at Cross Way, Steyne Road. The Keith Baker Trust, a Seaford-based trust, has made a significant grant to support the provision for the disabled. An exciting project! The Church Secretary, Cochrane Young (898386), would happily receive further gifts, of course, to make this vision a reality! Photo by Keith Carlisle Seaford Scene wishes to apologise for the text error on page 3 of the October issue. The front cover photo was Cross Way Church, Steyne Road.

NEW MEMBERS FOR SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB Seaford Martello has now recruited four new members since 1st July. Following a very successful Open Evening held by the club in May, to which a number of prospective members were invited, President Reg Dove has welcomed Jackie Arkwell, Annette Blackman, and the latest recruits, husband and wife Robert and Rosemary Kemp. Their induction was watched by District Governor Duncan Anderson who was visiting the club. President Reg said: “It is always a pleasure to welcome new friends into the Rotary family. In Rotary every penny we raise goes to charitable causes, both local national and international, but we also have a lot of fun and fellowship. What more could you ask than an organisation that provides friends, a great time and provides substantial money to good causes? SEAFORD LIVE! HITS THE HIGH NOTES Music and arts festival Seaford Live! has raised almost £1,500 for life-saving charity Sussex Air Ambulance. The 10-day show held at a number of venues in the town included music from bands and performers, exhibitions, theatre and dance. The event ended with a closing night performance called Hitting the High Notes from Seaford Rock and Jazz orchestra at the Constitutional Club. This year, organisers decided to raise funds for the Sussex Air Ambulance, which relies almost entirely on public donations, and were delighted with the grand total of £1,433. Seaford Live! secretary John Clayton said: “We are really pleased to have raised such a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile cause. Everyone had a really good time and I’d like to thank all those who contributed, from the performers to the venues, for making it a really enjoyable event.”

Local hypnotherapist meets new national standards A Seaford based hypnotherapist has become one of the first in the country to achieve a new national standard of excellence for her therapy. Magda Harbour has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare. The recognition places her at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics. Magda Harbour said: “Achieving registration is not only great news for me and my clients, but a vital step for hypnotherapy. The most
popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and anxiety conditions, weight control and addictive behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse.” Hypnotherapy is one of 12 disciplines now recognised by the CNHC. Members of the public can search the CNHC register to find practitioners in their local area. More than 40,000 searches were carried out last year. By providing a verification of standards, the CNHC allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals. For further information, please contact Magda Harbour on mobile number 07968 114196

SEAFORD ARTIST’S NEW COLLECTION UNVEILED Andrew Dandridge, one of the South’s most successful artists based here in Seaford, is holding his 20th One Man Exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the Cuckmere Barns, at The English Wine Centre near Alfriston. Andrew Dandridge is renowned for his evocative paintings of the Sussex Downs and the surrounding countryside. His new studio in Bishopstone enjoys a dramatic vista over the sea as well as the eastern aspect of the new South Downs National Park, providing him with an endless source of inspiration for his much-loved watercolour paintings. He walks and cycles many miles searching out new subjects to paint and thinks nothing of wading waist deep through snow drifts to find that most spectacular of views. Indeed, his winter scenes are highly prized, as are his paintings of bluebell woods and country lanes. He also has an intimate knowledge of the sea and boats of all types and all things marine, having grown up with yachts and boats from an early age. He paints them with a love
for their grace and beauty and with great respect for the power of the sea in all its moods. The unveiling of his new collection on the 19th November will reveal many months and countless hours of painstaking work from the hand of a true perfectionist. His evocative downland landscapes and dramatic seascapes are perfect examples of his dedication and skills. Most of the paintings will be watercolours but among these will be some oil paintings. A successful artist with sales in excess of 3,800 original paintings, Andrew Dandridge has become established as one of the South’s most popular and well-known landscape painters. His exhibitions are always very well attended so it pays to get there early as, with a queue at the door, paintings are snapped up by an eager following. So please come along and see the show and meet the artist Andrew Dandridge on Saturday November 19th and Sunday November 20th, see page 21 for details.

Hot Stone Massage at Haven Therapies Julia Clark of Haven Therapies, Saxon Lane, Seaford asked me last month if I would be interested in writing an article about the experience of having a hot stone fusion massage. I’d had a hot and cold stone massage before so I was curious to find out the difference. I accepted the offer with the prospect of enjoying a relaxing pampering session. Julia is a sports and remedial massage therapist with 20 years’ experience and qualified in hot stone fusion massage six years ago. This fusion massage enables her to combine her hands-on massage skills whilst using the hot stones. The smooth stones are made of basalt, which retains the heat, and are warmed up in a bath of hot water and teatree oil. Julia always tests the temperature of the stones on your skin first before proceeding. Lying on my front Julia began by massaging oil over my shoulders and back and then continued the massage using the hot stones, changing them every few minutes once they had started to lose their heat. With tranquil music playing and quietness all around, I soon started to feel very relaxed. Julia used long and short sweeping movements with the hot stones as well as using them to massage specific areas that required deeper tissue attention, such as around the shoulders, upper back and the hips. Using the stones as if she was massaging with her hands, it was difficult to tell whether she was actually using her hands or the stones! It was all so very smooth, flowing and very nurturing. The heat of the stones also felt wonderful and I could feel the muscles of my body quickly relaxing. A nice little touch was when she swept the stones from my ankle along my leg up to my back and shoulder, then down my arm and to my hand, where she left the warm stone for me to hold - I didn’t want to let go of it. Strangely enough I also enjoyed feeling the hot stones on the soles of my feet! Rolling onto my back, Julia continued the fusion massage on the front of my legs and arms and around my neck and on my face using smaller stones for these areas.
the warm stones still in my hands I felt totally relaxed, in fact I felt as if I’d been away on a gorgeous summer holiday. The experience was fantastic and I’d definitely recommend this type of massage to anyone who enjoys the heat and requires total relaxation, especially if you are feeling quite stressed. A one-hour session with Julia is also very reasonably priced at £40. Hot stone fusion massage is definitely the massage for me! Julia is also a consultant for Neal’s Yard Remedies, organic, natural health and beauty products, and are available to purchase at Haven Therapies. She will be holding an open day in November where you can sample and order the products - they make fabulous gifts for Christmas, or maybe you just want to treat yourself! Pamper packages and gift vouchers are also available. Fran Tegg. Haven Therapies, at The Barbers Chair, Saxon Lane. After an hour of massage, Julia quietly left the room giving me some time to wake up as I’d almost nodded off! With

Running Commentary... I have known this month’s guest contributor, Julie Howey, for many years and have been impressed by both her running and willingness to venture out of county to experience the enjoyment of encompassing a wider range of races. She writes… ‘In September each year, for several years, I watched on TV as thousands and thousands of participants in the Great North Run crossed the Tyne Bridge to the strains of ‘Local Hero’ and the roar of the Red Arrows overhead. With my husband’s connections with the north east there was quite an incentive for me to run it one day. But really, at that stage my running had been nothing more than short bursts on squash and badminton courts and between the wickets on a stoolball pitch. In those instances you get a few seconds breather between points or runs. However, to complete a half marathon was obviously not going to be quite so easy. I was approaching 50 so it was a good time to start training. Now in all, I have completed the GNR four times and eleven other half marathons, including Dartford, Reading, Paddock Wood, Barns Green and Brighton, as well as the Great South on two occasions. However, in the last few years I have stopped doing half marathons so that I can cut down on my training and take part only in 10km (and shorter) races. Even so, my race times seem to be getting slower by
Personal Counselling
Julie may have said her running has got slower but that was not what I thought when we met up at the Hassocks 5-miler a few months ago. Her time of under 43 minutes over a tough little course was pretty impressive. In next month’s column I hope to have the views of Harry Strong, who’s only just into his teens but already looking an exciting prospect for the future of the sport. about a minute a year but I still believe that one day I’ll be able to run faster times again. I suppose it doesn’t help that over the last few months my training mileages have been a bit hit and miss, but I do enjoy the countryside when I’m training and keeping fit (or should that be fit-ish?) When I’m not running in Friston Forest I walk the dog there and it’s encouraging to be asked by other regular dog-walkers how my running is going. The other week a gentleman on a horse at Charleston Bottom was most impressed with my running, but in truth, I was relieved to take a few seconds breather every time I had to stop to open the gates. However, his comments helped to spur me on. Unfortunately, during races I don’t always get the chance to take in all the scenery, but it’s still a great feeling when I cross the finishing line! I’m sure there must be a lot of advantages in belonging to a running club but I’m happy fitting in my training and races when I can without feeling that I’d be letting down club mates if I didn’t attend. That said, I have found a number of club runners are always friendly and good to chat with.’

OUSE VALLEY CYCLE NETWORK MOVING PLANET WALK The Ouse Valley Cycle Network Moving Planet walk was well supported on a fine September day. Around twenty people, several dogs and a heron joined the walk, enjoying the beautiful riverside scenery with wonderful panoramic views of surrounding downland, including Mount Caburn, Firle, Kingston and Swanborough Hills. We were well sustained throughout the approximately nine-mile walk by great en route foraging, tasting many different varieties of apples and blackberries - and by our picnic at Southease!

We discussed possibilities for the Ouse Valley trail as part of the bigger picture of South Downs National Park sustainable tourism, Lewes, Newhaven and Ouse Valley development. We took photos and made detailed notes about the condition of the existing path, distributing information about the OVCN to passing cyclists and walkers, and at the Southease Chilli fair and Lewes Pickled events. We also talked about how to develop village connections and wider links with the Ouse Valley network and international trails. Apart from working out a solution for the frustrating but very pretty diversion at Piddinghoe, we felt that very few physical changes would be required to sensitively transform the riverside route into a much-needed shared walking and cycle trail. Most of the work will be in making a strong enough case to change hearts and minds! To contribute your ideas and keep up to date about progress, please sign up to Village Connections and OVCNet websites at www.villageconnections.ning.com and www.ovcnet.ning.com. Living at Cuckmere Haven Part 3 I’m sitting here writing this whilst watching a fashion magazine shoot on the verandah outside the cottage. The impossibly leggy model is dressed in the most fantastic clothes, with David Bowie-esque make-up, sparkling in the sunshine with her hair blowing in the wind. The hair and make-up artists primp and preen her between shoots and the photographer snaps away. It’s Robb and my first experience of a shoot at the cottage without Carolyn here and it’s amazing how involving it is (trying to concentrate on writing is proving trickier than I thought!) The kitchen table is devoted to make-up alone, and one of the bedrooms has been transformed into a makeshift wardrobe with a glittering Aladdin’s cave of accessories laid out on the bed. It’s been the perfect weather for the shoot and who could have predicted those incredible early autumn days?! I think I said in my last column that sitting out in the sunshine was a summer memory but there was more to come; a weekend spent mostly in swimwear enjoying the most invigorating and uplifting sea swims – in October!! The sea was a perfect turquoise, lit up like a carpet of diamonds, and with huge white yachts anchored a little way out, Robb and I felt like we were swimming in the Mediterranean (albeit with slightly colder water). But since those glorious end of summer days, it’s definitely been getting colder, especially in the evenings. The wind has picked up, blowing the waves into a frenzy of excitement. The boom as they strike the sea wall is extraordinary; the first time I experienced it in wild weather I was in the bedroom and thought someone had slammed a door – vigorously – somewhere in the house. Our dog, Bourg, cannot believe her luck at her new location. At just twenty months, she’s still got all the exuberance of puppyhood and delights in chasing the hundreds of rabbits that dot the landscape at dusk. Her initial hunting forays proved unsuccessful – warning the rabbits of her impending arrival by barking loudly was doomed to failure. She’s had time to hone her skills and seems to be learning stealth as a tactic, though it’s not something that comes easily to her. Despite her diminutive size, Robb and I can hear her coming a mile off, panting and thundering along.
Robb and I set off for a dawn low-tide walk to the Seven Sisters a few days ago, crossing the Cuckmere in our wellies. We realised that there’s something of an optical illusion viewing the cliffs from the cottage, for when we stood beneath them we could only marvel at their incredible size and grandeur. The sense of stillness at their feet took our breath away. On our way back along the beach, Robb discovered an enormous and beautiful piece of driftwood. Just what he had been looking for for his latest artistic project! A Laurel and Hardy style comedy caper ensued as we tried to lug the beast back to the cottage across the sliding shingle. Divorce seemed imminent until Robb hiked the thing single-handedly up to his waist and struggled up the path like Tarzan. All that effort was worth it. As the wood has dried out, it has revealed the tides in its texture and form, a magical kind of movement in stasis. Our day was completed with a walk in Friston Forest, gazing back home along the Cuckmere as it reflected the reds and golds of the sunset. The art workshops at the cottage have been a great success. It is such a pleasure to share the cottage and seeing artists dotted around the garden and on the sea wall always makes us stop and smile at one another. We’ve got some exciting workshops coming up and are delighted to have one in December. On Saturday December 3rd, there’s a chance to immerse yourself in the wonder of Cuckmere with a special creative writing workshop with tutor Kay Syrad. A morning spent collecting ideas from the land- and sea-scape, followed by lunch and an afternoon of writing and a poetry reading around the fire. Exploring Cuckmere with pen and paper and mind and heart open, or chasing around the shops in a Christmas frenzy…I know where I’ll be! SEAFORD martello rotary club proms night 2011 The annual Proms Concert organised by Seaford Martello Rotary Club took place at Seaford Head Community College on 8th October. Seaford Silver Band, led by Director of Music Dr Isla Sitwell, performed along with guest singers Kate Welch and Grace Constable, and guest pianist Rosemary Kemp. Moira House Chamber Choir, conducted by Martin Neil , also sang several numbers and everyone joined in the rousing finale, singing Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Sussex by the Sea. President Reg Dove said “Seaford Martello Proms Concert is always an enjoyable evening, but I think that the team excelled themselves this year. The evening was a great success, the new venue was more suitable to a concert and we raised a significant amount for our charity fund. Thank you to all who supported us and we look forward to seeing you all next year.”

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’
Newsletter Autumn 2011
DEVELOPMENT The relaunch in the central area in the spring has successfully brought in additional members, and we now boast over 1,000 addresses on our membership list. We are now relaunching in the west and north areas with this edition of the newsletter, which means the whole of Seaford and Bishopstone has coverage again at last. Providing we have a good response from these new areas, the next thing we will do is concentrate on building up the network of road co-ordinators and increase the membership numbers even more.
POLICE PANEL MEETINGS Our local police arrange a panel meeting in each of the five wards approximately four times a year and you are encouraged to attend your local ones if possible. They are able to discuss local issues with you and draw up an action list of issues to be dealt with. We try and ensure there is a Neighbourhood Watch committee member in attendance. The next few meetings are as follows:
Whilst we aim to deliver the autumn 2011 newsletter to as many households as we can, we will also publish it in Seaford Scene for the benefit of those not yet receiving an individual copy.
Times and venues are included in the police press releases, are displayed at the police station, 37 Church Street, and on the police website www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments.

‘NO COLD CALLING’ ZONES Currently there are a small number of ‘No Cold Calling’ Zones within Seaford and Seaford Town Council is about to consult with the public to make the whole of the town a single zone by erecting signage on each of the three roads leading into the town. NHW supports the proposal and has pledged to make a donation towards the cost of the signage. We will keep you informed of the progress in this matter. We should add that Bishopstone is already a ‘No Cold Calling’ zone in its own right, due to it having just one access road which has the necessary signage erected. YEARLY SUBSCRIPTIONS May we take this opportunity to remind you that the annual renewal of NHW subscriptions was due from March 2011 and a large number of subscribers who joined the association later in 2010, are now overdue in their 2011 subscriptions. The membership year runs from the AGM held in March, to the next AGM in 2012, and we have printed a membership form at the end of this newsletter for your use. Please do not hesitate to contact the Membership Secretary or send us an email to check your status if you are unsure if you have renewed or not.

ROAD CO-ORDINATORS/VOLUNTEERS Road co-ordinators are an essential part of the Neighbourhood Watch Association, in that they deliver these newsletters door to door twice a year, but some also keep a wary eye and ear open for any suspicious activity in their vicinity. We have a number of vacancies in all areas, plus there are some roads that have never been covered by a Road Co-ordinator. If you would like to volunteer to fill a vacancy for this worthwhile cause, or are willing to just deliver the newsletters, we would be very pleased to hear from you, and invite you to contact the Chairman. Our contact details are set out further on. The following shows how NHW is organised: l Committee (3 officers & Area Co-ordinators) l Area Co-ordinators (5 officers. North, West, South, East & Central) l Sector Co-ordinators (24 officers approx. 5 per Area) l Road Co-ordinators (ideally one per road location) We would also be pleased to hear from anybody who would be willing to offer admin support to the Committee Members and Area Co-ordinators. EMAIL ADDRESSES We are building up a database of members’ email addresses, and we forward the weekly police press releases to members, together with other items of information concerning casual traders, cold calling, scams and other local issues as they arise. We also receive feedback and information from members and pass this to the police to action and follow up.
If you would like to be added to the email database and receive communications and the police press releases from us, please enter your details on the membership form printed at the end of this newsletter. Please note, we are covered by the Data Protection Act, and your details will only be used for passing Neighbourhood Watch information to you. NEW RETIREMENT RULES Katie White on what changes in compulsory retirement mean for workers and businesses. With autumn here and the leaves beginning to fall, so also falls the default retirement age. Whilst the legislative provision was abolished back in April, October 1st marked the end of retirements based solely on an employee reaching the age of 65. From now on compulsory retirement will only be a fair reason for dismissal if the age set can be objectively justified, and proving this is going to be tough. Without a fixed age, an employer wishing to dismiss must focus on a person’s capability, not their date of birth. Many employers have recoiled from this change, but the law does not expect businesses to keep someone who cannot do their job. Employers can
use the same fair methods of dismissal for a 72 year old incapable of fulfilling their role as they would for any other under performing employee. There’s also much to be said for retaining talented older staff. In addition to the obvious benefits of experience, a wide age spectrum offers valuable commercial and cultural advantages. Granted, the loss of the fixed retirement age takes away the dignified exit of compulsory retirement. Yet those with much to offer the working world after their 65th birthday may find this a price worth paying. Having opened its doors five years ago to young people in Seaford, The Base became known as a safe place for young people to meet, relax and enjoy themselves. However in the last couple of years the facility has fallen by the wayside with little use. The new management committee is focused on reviving The Base as a hub for the area’s youth community. The Base Management Committee Chairman, Councillor Paul Heseltine said “Whether it is a place to meet friends, undertake band practice or attend drop-in sessions run by the Youth Development Service, The Base is in a fantastic location with lots of exciting potential. As well as discussing planned usage of the facility the committee are currently looking at securing funding to extend the premises, install utilities and toilets, and thereby increase the facility’s flexibility and appeal”. Paul continues, “We would love for teenagers, parents and interested parties to join our committee or become members of The Base and help keep this unique facility in full use”.

SEAFORD AUTHOR PUBLISHES DEBUT NOVEL Made Up: A modern-day fairy tale Even though the very first chapter of local author Emma Jackson’s, debut novel, Made Up, sees main character Katia arriving in a seaside town to visit her old home, the writer can confirm that the setting is not in any way based on Seaford. That may seem a strange thing to want to point out but when Emma first began writing Made Up in 2006, she had never actually even visited Seaford and, since settling here in 2009, she can’t help but be pleased it was not a case of life imitating art. Ridingstone, the fictional seaside town in her novel, is somewhat rundown - as well as being the unfortunate setting for Katia’s former relationship, an episode in her life she is hoping to put behind her as she begins a new career as a make-up artist. Her journey takes her to a film set in India, where she gradually regains her confidence and grows closer to the famous but much maligned lead actor, Owen. Emma’s first novel has been described as “A really good read - honest and believable characters and a story that whisks you away and keeps you hooked.” Published this year on her 28th birthday, she could not think of a better present. The perfect antidote to the cold winter nights, Made Up is available in ebook format with online retailers such as Amazon and Smashwords.

RAFA ANNIVERSARY PARADE 2011 On the 18th September 2011 Seahaven Branch of RAFA held their 71st Anniversary Parade and Church Service in Seaford. The Parade is held every year to commemorate the Battle of Britain in 1940, but also to remember all those airmen and air women who have served in the Royal Air Force and air forces of the commonwealth. The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, and his wife, Mrs Margaret Field, attended along with the Mayor of Seaford Cllr. Linda Wallraven and several other distinguished guests and friends. We also were supported by Seahaven Branch RAFA, the Royal British Legion, Sea Cadets, Scouts from Worthing and of course 1218 Newhaven Sqn. Air Cadets. The Parade commenced at Seaford War Memorial at 2pm with the arrival of the Lord Lieutenant and the laying of the wreaths.

SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY Come and join us - we are a friendly informal group, with some members who are great experts in various aspects of natural history (and are happy to share their knowledge) and others who are novices keen to learn about plants, birds and animals in our lovely Sussex countryside. We look forwarding to seeing current and new members at our winter season of indoor meetings. These meetings usually take the form of talks by experts on a wide range of topics. Our November meetings include a talk on the Seven Sisters National Park on the 1st and one on wetland restoration on the 15th. The venue is St Luke’s Church Centre, Walmer Road, Seaford on Tuesdays at 2.15pm - see the listing at the back of Seaford Scene for dates and details. Visitors are welcome – we ask for a donation of £3 (which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society). From March to October, we organise outdoor meetings, usually gentle walks lasting about two hours. Again we ask for a donation from visitors, this time of £1. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964.
Out and about in November
November is often thought of as a drab month – the leaves have gone from the trees – but there is still plenty of interest on autumn walks. The stark outlines of leafless trees are attractive in themselves and autumn fruits like holly and hawthorn berries are still about. And if you’ve ever wondered what the silvery white fluffy covering is on bushes on Seaford Head at this time of year, it is the seed heads of Clematis vitalba and has the lovely name of ‘traveller’s joy’, or more prosaically ‘old man’s beard’.
SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY
The autumn term ends with a concert in St. Leonard’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday 3rd December. Musical Director Sion Parry has chosen a varied programme. Stanford’s evocative Songs of the Fleet contrast with Puccini’s youthful tour de force, his Missa di Gloria. Listeners may also look forward to popular vocal favourites Adam’s O Holy Night and the duet from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and the audience will have their own opportunity to sing something seasonal. Tickets £9 (including programme) from Seaford Tourist Information Centre and Newberry Estate Agents, or from (01323) 894954.

That Super-Duper 70s Show Review An entertaining evening was had by all, at Seaford Musical Theatre’s production on Saturday 24th September of ‘That Super-Duper 70s Show’. The cast of 19 took us on a musical journey through the 1970s with well-known songs from our favourite bands and singers. The opening number ‘Wig Wam Bam’ set the scene with the cast wearing the fashions of the 70s: long hair, flares, flower power and glittery disco attire. ‘I will Survive’ and ‘I am Sailing were performed well by both the ladies and the whole cast. Following the opening songs we were given a brief resumé of the seventies with references to unemployment, the miners’ strike, the three-day week and the Vietnam War along with TV favourites like the The Two Ronnies and the controversial ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’. The first half continued in a similar way with a well-executed and moving performance by the cast of ‘Bright Eyes’ and an entertaining version of ‘Staying Alive’ by the men. Laura gave an excellent and very professional performance of ‘It’s a Heartache’ and Emma’s version of ‘When I Need You’, was also of a very high standard. ‘You Make me Feel Like Dancing’ provided the 70s disco number; however lots of swirling disco lights and a sparkling glitter ball would have created a more effective disco scene, I feel. The first act concluded with a powerful Queen medley including ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘We are the Champions’, with the audience joining in, swaying their arms in the air! Act Two opened with Boney M’s ‘By the Rivers of Babylon, performed by the cast in, lots of glittery costumes. Phil gave a moving performance of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ whilst Jenny sang ‘You Won’t Find Another Fool’ well and with confidence. It was obvious that the cast were enjoying singing T Rex’s ‘Get it on’, which was followed by an amusing interlude from Steve, then the sexy number ‘Hot Stuff ’ by Shar and the men, who strutted their funky stuff! The company sang ‘Blame it on the Boogie’ with all the hand actions with enthusiasm and the show concluded with a fantastic Abba medley that included all your Mama Mia favourites to sing along to… This was also dedicated to The Keith Baker Charitable Trust’ which has donated funds to provide disabled access and new toilet facilities at the Barn Theatre. Finally, congratulations must be given to Sue Burton, who directed both the show and the music. As always, the musical accompaniment provided by the four-piece band was excellent. Well done to everyone - it definitely was an enjoyable, sing-a-long trip down memory lane for me! Fran Tegg

Gardening News
SEAFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY November means that for the gardener the year is drawing to it its end, the colour in the trees turns to dark red and brown and leaves begin to fall in abundance. It’s time to protect those special plants against winters icy cold fingers. Take those precious plants indoors, in the greenhouse or wrap up with fleece, straw or hessian. It’s not too late to plant those sweet peas ready for next year’s summer shows. Start them off in the warmth of a greenhouse but gradually move them outdoors for the whole winter. They are quite hardy but appreciate a little outdoor protection from icy winds.
Can I welcome all those new Society members that have joined during 2011? Our 110th Annual General Meeting is on the 24th November in St. Leonard’s Church Hall at 7 pm. This is always a fun evening when we can reveal to you our plans for next year. As usual we will have a bumper raffle and special refreshments are served during the evening. Do you have just a little spare time to join us on the Committee and help run the society’s activities? We only have about seven meetings during the year usually for two hours on a Monday evening. In particular we are looking for a joint or deputy Show Secretary - someone to help organise all the entries and results during our two shows each the year. We are a M BE R F O R N O VE S R DE IN e. Society History Part 10. The ’90s 1990 saw the scrapping of the two-tier subscription rate of £1 for single members and £1.50 for a couple. It was replaced by the inclusive ‘household’ rate. The decision was made to introduce a bi-annual show schedule covering both 1990 and 1991. This practice continued for many years. The society noted the death of its President Mr Charles Rush. In 1992 Tates Garden Centre, later to become Paradise Park, sent two of its staff to give a talk at one of our social evenings. Rita gave a demonstration on ‘making a hanging basket’ and Stuart Marsh talked about ‘colour in the garden’. Mick Brown and Paul Earl joined the committee; both were to become instrumental in the transformation of future annual shows into what is now one of the largest shows in the county. 1998 saw the introduction of the society logo, designed by Ruby Dyer of the Over 60 Club art class, and is still in use today. Mike and Shirl Parker’s research traced a society document dated 1899. It was therefore resolved that the 1998 Annual Show should now be designated as the Centenary Show and Lord Healy presented the awards at the end of the afternoon. In 1999 the committee considered several ideas to commemorate the millennium year in 2000. Ideas considered included the purchase of a horse trough to be planted with flowers and a special monument. The final choice was to work in conjunction with Lewes District Council and produce a quiet seated area and garden in the new Seaford cemetery extension. A plaque would be attached to the entrance to advise that the garden had been donated by our society members for the benefit of all Seaford residents. To be continued: Mike Parker.

Seaford Gardening Club It was good to have a week of lovely sunshine at the end of September to give us a boost before the realities of the autumn and winter months ahead. What a pleasure to see folk sunbathing and even swimming on the first Sunday of October! Let us hope we will not suffer for it later on. Mr Alan Carter, our speaker at the September meeting, gave a very good talk on ‘Springtime in Sussex’. He started with an apology because he did not have any slides of Seaford, but the ones he did show were both colourful and interesting. Like many of us, he feels that spring is a lovely time of year. Although the official start of spring is 31st March, some bulbs start to appear before then. The snowdrop is the first to show its pure white head, followed by the Christmas rose. February should also bring the rains to fill reservoirs and to water the emerging bulbs and flowers. The birds are still looking for food and the seed and nut containers empty very quickly. April can be a deceptive month with cold nights which kill off tender young plants. All forms of spring shrubs and trees come into bloom including Forsythia, Magnolia, Kerria and the early fruits. My favourite wallflowers, together with crocus and primroses, are next to come to the fore. The Beachy Head area gets covered in cowslips and wild orchids., and into May there are masses of bluebells in Arlington woods. A pretty slide of a squirrel sharing a small child’s lunch was one of some very unsual and interesting exposures. We also enjoyed a slide or two of the seas pounding over the sea wall in a storm at Eastbourne, a lovely image of twoyear-old twin granddaughters watching tadpoles in a large container, and pictures of the cute lambs at the Cuckmere Sheep Centre. Alan interlaced his talk with old country poems and country sayings, some of which were highly amusing. I only wish I could have written them all down! It was a fascinating and amusing talk, which kept the audience enraptured for over an hour. We shall certainly ask him back again. He ended with the Rudyard Kipling saying Fair Ground Sussex by the Sea. Our next talk will be on Wednesday 30th November at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, (using the rear entrance please). Our speaker for the evening will be Mr Michael John Hoad, giving a talk entitled Weald to Walland. He has visited the club three times before and is well worth coming to listen to. Please join us for an evening with friendly folk. You can come as a visitor for £2, or join for the year at £10. Green Waste Recycling Service
This Autumn we are piloting “Grow Your Own Leafy Street”, in two streets in North Chyngton - Chyngton Avenue and Saltwood Road, where residents have already shown interest. We want to bring back modestsized trees to these streets, and eventually to the whole of Seaford. Residents would literally own the project in the current cash famine, we are asking residents each to sponsor and plant a tree or trees in front of their own house, with muscle help available for people who are not so spry. It is important not to stop planting trees just because the times are bad. The three-year-old trees we used on the A259 cost about £30 each, but we can supply “whips” with strimmer protection, stake and a weed mat for about £5. With summer watering, these saplings will catch up with the smarter trees after a few years. Possible trees are Rowan, May Tree (Cretaegus) and Whitebeam (Sorbus aria). Over time, this would transform the look of the streets. Modest-sized trees need little maintenance apart from watering in the first two summers. They are not dangerous and will not take light from rooms, but will give pleasant shade in the summer. Each home in the pilot streets should by now have had an invitation letter. Residents of other streets are very welcome to join in. Planting would be on or about 26 November for National Tree Week. Member contact: walter.tillyard@ btinternet.com.

FRIENDS OF THE CROUCH For the first time this year, two events were held in the beautiful landscaped area of Crouch Gardens as part of Seaford Live, in partnership with Friends of the Crouch. The first, a musical event with performances by folk singer Ulrike Gabriele and bluegrass duo Barber & Taylor, was enjoyed in the evening sunshine by over 100 people. The second was a celebration of Shakespeare monologues, staged by Lewesbased theatre group Synergy. Despite the rain, 50 people gathered to watch, and many passers-by stayed to enjoy the spectacle. Both these events were free, with collection boxes. Seaford Live and Friends of the Crouch hope this successful beginning will herald a long-lasting collaboration between the two voluntary groups in future years.

Why Not Join Seaford Little Theatre? Seaford Little Theatre started in 1945 at the end of World War II, for a community tired of bombs and rationing. Seaford Little Theatre has been successful ever since, and has become a wellknown rendezvous for good entertainment. Apart from productions, it has a good social side, for instance quiz evenings, play readings and skittles. Wednesday evenings we have a workshop from 7.30 to 10pm where we build and paint the set for the next play. We are a very friendly society and always pleased to receive new members. So come and visit us Wednesday evenings and find out how interesting and fulfilling dramatics are. You will be made most welcome. Craftstone A5 2009

INDIE BAND ‘DR SCARDO’ GIG IN SEaford Indie band Dr Scardo will be playing all original material at a gig in Seaford on November 4th. Formed at the beginning of 2011, the four-piece band release their debut single Leave Us Alone in November, and are already getting radio support from alternative radio in the USA. As one half of Brit-Canadian duo Big Bam Boo, Dr Scardo’s guitar player and vocalist, Simon Scardanelli, enjoyed UK top 40 chart success in 1989 with Fell Off A Mountain and Shooting From My Heart. In the USA and Canada, Shooting From My Heart hit the top 20, leading to a band relocation to New York. Moving back to the UK after a hazardous few years as an illegal alien in the Lower East Side, Scardanelli disappeared from the music scene for over 10 years, returning with solo albums in 2005 and 2007. Now he’s back with a brand new band and a sackfull of vibrant new tunes, soon to be available as a blazingly good CD! The group is currently mid-way through recording their debut album, which is due to be released in the spring, at which point they will also be touring. Leave Us Alone is available to download for free from www.reverbnation. com/drscardo, and more information on the band can be found at www.facebook.com/drscardo and www. dr-scardo.com. Dr Scardo are playing at Cinque Ports, 49 High Street, Seaford on November 4th at 8pm, free entry.

MOTORSPORTS CHALLENGE FOR HOSPICE CARE Garage proprietor and motorsport fanatic Kevin Lower is raising money whilst celebrating his 50th birthday in style by entering fifty motorsports events from 4th March 2011 to 3rd March 2012.
ACCESS REPAIRS REPAIRS TO: WASHING MACHINES DISHWASHERS ELECTRIC COOKERS TUMBLE DRYERS ALL WORK GUARANTEED CALL BRIAN ON

The Fifty@50 challenge will see Kevin taking part mainly in sprints, hill climbs and autotests at National, ‘B’, or clubsport level., possibly adding some rallies and car trials at the end of the year if some events get cancelled - or the cars break down! The challenge is being undertaken in order to raise money for Demelza Hospice Care for Children, which aims “to add life to days when days can’t be added to life”. The charity is very close to Kevin’s heart after their support when his son Toby was ill and sadly passed away in 2004. Kevin will be mainly using a Ford Escort RS2000, Mini Moke and a Mini Saloon whilst competing, with back up from a brace of Ford Kas if things go badly wrong! The event locations range from Mallory Park in Leicestershire, Brands Hatch and Lydden Hill in Kent to Goodwood in Sussex, Crystal Palace in London and Snetterton in Norfolk, amongst others. The challenge will include at least four national championships in order to accommodate the goal of 50 events in a year. Stafford Road Garage, Seaford, is funding the events and covering all costs, so that all sponsorship money raised goes directly to Demelza. To sponsor Kevin’s Fifty@50 challenge, please donate at www.justgiving.com/kevinlower.

SEAFORD KURLERS VISIT HAYLING ISLAND On the weekend of 2nd to 5th September, a group of Seaford Kurlers went to Lakeside Coastal Village, Hayling Island, which is a Warners holiday village. Apart from excellent food and entertainment that Warners supply, there are a lot of sporting facilities, both outdoor and indoor. Most of the activities can be enjoyed by disabled and able-bodied folk alike. So we had many choices - bowling, swimming, kurling, darts, table tennis - too many to mention. We all had a great time. On a more sporting note, we sent three teams to compete in the annual National Great Britain Kurling Association Championships, on 1st October. This year the event was held at Folkestone. We all had to be up bright and early to leave the Downs Leisure Centre by coach at 7am. We did not run off with the Championship title - but we did not disgrace ourselves. It was a good but tiring day. Our next social event is our annual Christmas Lunch. This will be at The Drove, Newhaven. We have been there a couple of times before and they have done us proud. It really is a great place for group celebrations. Thoroughly recommendable.
Clock Restoration Service
As a club we are still growing, and as a trial we have decided to use the whole of the sports hall at the Downs Leisure Centre for the winter months. If successful, this will hopefully be able to continue. Seaford Kurlers are an ESDA group - we meet every Tuesday at the Downs Leisure Centre at 2pm-4pm. To find out more, contact Mrs June Wood, Secretary, 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford, BN25 3JS or tel. 01323 895376 or email June Wood at sally1989@tiscali.co.uk.

Seaford’s latest bathroom and kitchen fitter Seaford has a new addition to its choice of bathroom and kitchen fitters in the form of Geert Swaans. An experienced tradesman, Geert has recently relocated to the area from Dundee, and says of the move: “I am very excited to live in such a beautiful area of the country, I find the people here very friendly. Moving here is a chance to do more bespoke work, which allows me to be more creative.” Geert works independently, managing the whole project from start to finish himself. While in Dundee, he gained a prominent reputation for high quality work and a friendly, professional attitude. Through the Trusted Trader in Dundee scheme, a city council Trading Standards service, clients were able to lead feedback and comments; “Geert was always prompt. He is very friendly and explained exactly the work involved. I am very satisfied. Will definitely use him in the future... Overall, brilliant service. Thank you” Allana, Dundee “Having put off getting a new kitchen for so long to avoid the upheaval, we were so pleased that we went with Geert to carry out the work. Excellent guy – no loud music – couldn’t be more helpful and we were delighted with the tidy, work man like caring end result. Highly recommend him.” Beth, Newport. Geert says of his work, “I like creating things. People are generally very excited about a new bathroom and kitchen. It’s rewarding to be the person giving them that. It’s great when people come home from a day’s work and I’m cleaning up and I see them excited about the work I’ve been doing in their house.”

Geert doesn’t just install your bathroom or kitchen. He can help with advice, the design and supply. He is also a member of ‘The Best of Brighton and Hove’ which represents the best businesses in the area.

OUTWARD-LOOKING SEAFORD Seaford has been twinned with German town Bรถnningstedt since 1984. The Town Council is looking, quite rightly, at what value the town and its people place on this link, and what other areas of overseas co-operation the town might enjoy and benefit from. They have set up a working group of interested councillors and other people with twinning experience, but they are looking far wider than traditional links between two towns. Schools, clubs, businesses, interest groups, as well as the council, could benefit from links with similar, or perhaps vastly different, groups abroad. Links could be by email; exchange of photographs, newspapers, music or video; by personal visits; tourism links; or festivals of food, art or sport. There could even be links, probably using email and websites, with all the other Seafords world-wide! Rather than reinvent the wheel, the working group would like to compile a comprehensive list of all the links that already exist: between schools, clubs e.g. Rotary, football; churches; bands and choirs; and even individuals.

Therefore you are invited to send details of existing links with towns, groups or individuals, outside the UK, to the current Chair of the Working Group, Peter White. Peter, as Town Crier, is already linked with 3 other towns abroad. Ideas for types of future links, whether formal twinning, reciprocal visits, or electronic communication, would also be welcomed. For instance, would there be interest in a French link of some sort, to balance that with our German twin? Please drop brief details, and your contact information, by email to peterwhitecrier@hotmail.com, or by brief letter to Peter White c/o Seaford Town Council at 37 Church Street.
SUSSEX ROAMABILITY ROAM THE WETLANDS The variety and beauty of the Arundel Wetland Centre was enjoyed by our ramblers on a perfect day in September. The natural landscape of these wetlands is a pleasure quite apart from the wildlife. Water birds in their favoured surroundings are plentiful and attractive and all look healthy and completely at home here. We took a free ride on the electric boat, silent so there was no disturbance. It was tranquil and informative with an expert guide as our boatman. We saw plenty of birds with their growing young. We even got a swift glimpse of the trail in the water made by a water vole. There are surprising little nooks along the paths where unexpected havens encourage us to linger. We enjoyed a timber summer house where wild flowers and plants were tastefully arranged describing their medicinal uses. These grow freely throughout the wetlands. There were three disability motor scooter users in our group and the whole of the wetland was fully accessible to them. There is a facility in the electric boats to take a motor scooter and the occupant. Altogether we had a most pleasant and relaxing day. If you would like to know more, please contact Sheila Matthews, Tel: 01323 892647, e-mail: sheilamatthews99@aol.com.

Seaford Museum & Heritage Society hereby give
NOTICE of a lecture
‘Rotten’ Seaford A Political History of the Town
by Kevin Gordon to be held at
the LITTLE THEATRE, Steyne Rd
Friday 4th November 2011 7.15 for 7.30pm Tickets £6 include a glass of wine from Seaford Museum or at the door. The small seaside town of Seaford may be something of a quiet backwater today (described in Private Eye in June 2011 as a “run-down seaside resort”) but it certainly had a lively political past. In the 13th century, Seaford was a Cinque Port and thus entitled to return two Members of Parliament. By the eighteenth century this fact was exploited by local landowners such as the Pelham family, who used their influence to ensure that only their favoured candidates were elected. Seaford became a “Rotten Borough” where, to be elected, you simply needed enough money to bribe the electorate. In those days you were only entitled to vote if you paid local taxes so the local council assisted the gentry by declining to accept taxes from political opponents. This led to all manner of shenanigans and on more than one occasion there were even riots on election day. This did not prevent many interesting characters being elected, a naval hero and no less than three Prime Ministers. In his lecture “Rotten Seaford” local historian and parliamentary guide, Kevin Gordon will tell the story of the politics of Seaford from Cinque Port Corporation to Town Council and from Geoffrey Cuckoo MP to Norman Baker MP (our first and most recent representative in Parliament.) This lecture is part of Parliament Week (31st Oct to 6th Nov 2011). For further details go to www.parliamentweek.org. For information about Seaford Museum see www.seafordmuseum.co.uk
