to the December and Christmas issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. It’s the countdown to Christmas 2022, with plenty of festive opportunities to be enjoyed in and around Seaford, including Christmas fayres, markets and fundraising bazaars, Seaford Christmas Magic (page 24), arts and crafts, seasonal music, special church services (page 126) and of course Santa, who will be travelling in his sleigh around the streets of Seaford – turn to page 10 for Santa’s Sleigh Route and pages 127 to 132 for What’s On in December. With Christmas this month’s theme, we have a fascinating article on Christmas Feasting from Seaford Museum (page 16), and find out which local resident’s enormous Christmas decoration collection will be featured on TV (page 30). We must also be mindful that Christmas this year is going to be a tough one for some people due to the current cost of living crisis. Thankfully the kind people of Seaford are reaching out to those who need support, with free lunches and warm rooms available (page 19). And don’t forget about the impact on the environment – Seaford’s Young Mayor has a great environmentally-friendly gift idea (page 19) and Greenhavens Network has some wonderful suggestions to ensure your carbon footprint is kept to a minimum (page 49). Remember to shop locally and to support your local businesses. Wishing you all a very happy and healthy Christmas!

Lesley Harvey
Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford this month.
Art
Go to the Crypt Gallery in Church Street between Saturday 3rd and Friday 9th December for an exhibition by Sussex-based artist, graphic designer, photographer and musician Ziza Stupkova. Her work, often about landscapes and wildlife, is rich with colour and light. Entrance free.
Cinema
Playing at the Barn Theatre in Saxon Lane on Friday 2nd December at 7.30pm is Licorice Pizza (15). Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman and Sean Penn, this is the story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and navigating first love in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles in 1973. Alana is a bored photographer’s assistant of 25 while her admirer Gary is only 15. Together they embark on ambitious business ventures as they try to make sense of a crazy world. This movie was nominated Oscar and BAFTA Best Film. Saturday 3rd December is of course Christmas Magic, when the Community Cinema is screening the enchanting Encanto (PG, photo left) at 6pm. This animation is about a Columbian teenager who is the only member of the Madrigal family without magical powers. When Mirabel discovers that the magic surrounding their Encanto home is in danger she goes into action. Oscar and BAFTA winner Best Animated Feature Film. Then on 9rd December at 7.30pm the cinema is offering Downton Abbey: A New Era (PG). Featuring all the familiar actors, the time has shifted to 1928 and has most of the family hot-footing it to Provence where they appear to have inherited a villa, leaving Lady Mary in charge of the Abbey, which, like its Highclere location, is being used
by a film company. Tickets for all films from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, seafordcinema. org or on the door.
Jazz
Splash Point Jazz has trumpeter and vocalist Sue Richardson plus the Jo Fooks Quintet presenting Bird at The View, Seaford Golf Club, Southdown Road on Wednesday 7th December at 7pm. This new show celebrates the contribution of women to jazz, both as composers and performers. With her signature, intriguing narration alongside the music, Sue is joined by Jo Fooks (tenor), Neal Richardson (piano), Marianne Windham (bass) and Sophie Alloway (drums). This show swings all the way.
Drama
Seaford Little Theatre is getting into festive spirit with Alan Ayckbourn’s farce Season’s Greetings at the theatre in Steyne Road from Friday 2nd until Saturday 10th December, excluding Wednesday 7th December. Set in a suburban house, this is the tale of the night before Christmas, when various house guests arrive, and the subsequent three days. The Christmas Eve debacle leads on to more resentments and difficulties as lives are insightfully unpicked. Performances commence at 7.45pm, except for that on Saturday 3rd December which starts at 2.30pm. Directed by Garry Fowler, it has a cast of nine. Tickets from the Tourist Information Centre or from ticketsource.
Classical music
The Corelli Ensemble is playing at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road on Sunday 11th December at 4pm with music from Vaughan Williams (Dives and Lazarus), Paul Lewis (Seaford Sketches) and Martin Neill (Christmas Carol Suite). Tickets from eventbrite.
Folk
Seaford Sessions is hosting local band Contraband at the Little Theatre on Saturday 17th December at 7.30pm. At the time of writing this was a sellout, but you can always try your luck. Tickets from the TIC or from wegottickets.

SEAFORD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
Just in case you are thinking of turning up to one of our meetings to see what it’s all about (which you are most welcome to do) it is worth noting that we meet in person, at Seaford’s Con Club, only on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. Every other Friday we get together on-line, via Zoom – drop us an email if you would like an invite to one of these.
October started with a talk by Cherry Larcombe EFIAP ARPS DPAGB
BPE5* on Fine Art Flower Photography. We had an excellent turnout for this inspiring talk, including one new member and two who had turned up for the first time to see what we do. Cherry’s talk was full of creative ideas and she had also brought along a selection of prints for us to see close-up. It was useful to hear how she created some of her fabulous images and there were some good hints on using layers and blending modes in Photoshop.
The first two set-subject competitions of the season were for ‘Macro’ and ‘Triptych’, judged by Erica Oram CPAGB AFIAP BPE3*. The 20 entries for the Macro competition inevitably included a lot of nature images and it was one of these, Chris Dawson’s photo of a Bee Wolf Wasp (photo far left), which took first place. There were some very creative entries for the Triptych competition and Colin Mitchell took first place with another nature themed entry entitled Gone Fishing (photo bottom), from on his recent trip to Alaska.
The second round of the Print League was judged by a regular guest at SPS, Malcolm Bull from Steyning Camera Club. There were 32 prints in total for him to comment on. Stephen Day scored the only 20/20 in the Standard Group. In the advanced group three prints made it to the final selection, scoring the maximum 20/20. These three were very different styles and featured a monochrome ‘being in the right place at the right time’ image from Chris Dawson taken at Tide Mills (photo top) a superb wildlife shot of a short-eared Owl hunting from Colin Mitchell (photo 2nd from top), and a creative flower photo from Thelma Long (photo above right), possibly influenced by our recent talk by Cherry Larcombe.
The month was completed by another excellent talk by Jane Lazenby on advanced Photoshop techniques using textures to create artistic images. This built on the popular talk she gave us a year ago on the same subject.
You can see larger versions of all the photos on this page on our website www.seafordps.org, which is updated weekly. It also contains information about the club and our programme of events.

Seaford Rotary has revised some of the routes that Santa will follow this December to take account of the Newlands development, and to minimise the risk of finishing after 8pm.
It may be necessary for families to queue to see Santa rather than crowding around the sleigh. We ask parents to consider social distancing when their children are waiting to see Santa. Unfortunately, children will not be allowed to climb onto the sleigh.
10
Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
Seaford Rotary will be using a tracker App so that the public can determine the location of the sleigh and hence follow Santa’s journey along his route each evening. Details of the App may be found on www. seafordrotary.org.uk.
If you wish to make a cash donation as Santa passes by, Seaford Rotary asks that you have your cash ready. Seaford Rotary recognises that however you may not have cash readily available, but nevertheless may like to help us to help those less fortunate in Seaford. The website address https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ seafordsleigh or the QR code below will take you directly to our Christmas Sleigh JustGiving page.
If you would like to accompany Santa collecting
charitable causes with Seaford Rotary this December, please email santasleigh@seafordrotary. org.uk to let us know on which dates or routes you would be available to help or to ask for further details.

Seaford Museum CHRISTMAS FEASTING
Some of our Christmas traditions have curious origins.
The third Sunday in November is traditionally known as ‘stir-up Sunday’ for two reasons. The Church Collect for the day (25th after Trinity) begins ‘Stir up O Lord the wills of your faithful people’, which in the good old days reminded dutiful housewives that it was time to make the Christmas puddings. This has come some way from the old ‘plum porridge’ which was a sort of festive meusli, comprising meat, broth, spices, fruit, wine and breadcrumbs eaten by our ancestors from the 14th Century onwards and sometimes known as ‘frumenty’.
Sadly, plum porridge was the main target for Puritans a century later, when they outlawed most Christmas celebrations and traditions as ‘manifestations of Rome and the Devil, which better became the sacrifices of Bacchus than the incarnation of our most blessed Saviour’. When King Charles II returned to the throne in 1660, all but the Dissenters (who continued to regard the innocent pudding as a ‘hodge-podge of superstition’) eagerly returned to the traditions that had been driven underground – or at least behind closed doors.
During the 19th century, suet replaced the meat, eggs replaced the wine and dried fruit became more available, so that the original indigestiblesounding porridge became more like the solid, boiled or steamed pudding known and loved around the world today. The mixture would be stirred with a wooden spoon – to represent the manger – with family members taking turns to stir three times each for good luck in the ensuing year.
Until Victorian times, a highly dangerous game called ‘Snap Dragon’ was played at Christmas time, wherein players snatched raisins from a tray of flaming liquor or brandy. Perhaps this is where our custom of serving the pudding with flaming brandy originated, or maybe it just tasted nicer.
Centuries earlier a decorated Twelfth Night Cake was traditional and contained lucky favours, coins and toys. In the Museum, we have a tiny, white china doll less thatn1.5 cm tall which was a Victorian pudding toy.
And speaking of cakes, here is a Christmas recipe found in the diary of a young Seaford woman, dated 1891: ‘Gran’s recipe for a Christmas Cake (small one). First get half a gallon of flour, take a little more than half of it, and put it in a red baking pan. Rub half a pound of good salt butter well into the flour, half a pound of good white sugar, one packet of baking powder, one good-sized nutmeg, one pound of best currants, two ounces of best sweet almonds, half a dozen good cooking eggs and a quarter of a pound of candied peel. Cut up the peel (citron is best) and the almonds a little smaller if they are too big, then wet up all the jolly lot up with the 6 eggs, which must be well beat up in a basin. If the cake is too stiff, put a little cold water to wet up and finish. Get some paper and cut the size of the pan around the side and the bottom. Grease it well with butter and put the jolly lot in with a wooded spoon.’
Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.
Now there’s an idea for Bake Off!

Why the work of WAVES – supporting Seaford families – is more valuable now than ever
Research shows us time and again that most of us underestimate the massive effect of early childhood experiences for later health and wellbeing. Plenty of healthy play, loving and nurturing relationships, secure and kindly set boundaries all help children develop fully and protect them from developing health and mental health problems later. Often a little non-judgemental help can make a big difference when life’s storms bring difficulties that can hit any of us. The early focus of WAVES can play a really important role in helping to enable children and families to thrive. Those who have experienced the work of WAVES Seaford know that this small charity is a local treasure. Founded originally in the mid-1990s, it has continued to play a role in the lives of children and families in Seaford that has long-term benefits for overall wellbeing.

UNO22 TWELVE:
A Festive Merriment!
Thursday 1st December – Thursday 22nd
December. Gallery Uno, 14A High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG. OPEN DAILY: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm and Sundays 12pm – 3pm.
This December, all at Gallery Uno will be turning their attention to their final exhibition of the year; ‘A Festive Merriment!’: a special presentation for the forthcoming season of goodwill and conviviality.
There’s much to be celebratory about at the gallery as a new fourteen-month lease on the premises has now been confirmed, meaning they will be continuing to show spectacular quality local artwork until at least Christmas 2023. MThis means you have even more opportunities to track down that illusive and unique gift or indulgence, either for yourself or your nearest and dearest.
This month’s featured exhibitor has been showing with the Sussex Arts Collective since 2006. So it’s high time that this honour was bestowed upon her.
Caroline Dorling – Woodturner
Caroline’s youth was spent moving around the Home Counties as her father’s career with Marks and Spencer progressed. Her fondest memories were made in Sussex; collecting tadpoles in Ditchling Pond and visiting Jack and Jill windmills by bus.
As an adult she returned to Sussex in 1985. Astride a horse or walking the dog, she explored the Downland landscape captured so succinctly by Eric Ravilious in his prints and paintings, which she so much adored.
Her love for woodworking was sparked by her carpentering uncle. Thirty-five years ago she bought her first lathe with a bucket of random tools that
had been housed in a converted railway carriage in the corner of a farmer’s field. Ignorant of turning, she ‘hacked’ away for a couple of years until a new business venture running Flint House Centre for Healing and Learning devoured her time and woodturning became a fond memory.
Twelve years later, with changing commitments and time on her hands, she attended several weekend courses at West Dean where she discovered that she still had a passion for the material, and subsequently bought a new lathe and set about improving her skills.
Caroline has an infectious enthusiasm for her medium and has built up an extensive knowledge of how each wood behaves: Sycamore can cut like butter; Jarrah Burr is hard and dusty, but shines up beautifully once oiled. She sources a wide range of English grown and exotic woods chosen for their inherent vibrancy, surface design and contrast in colour and texture.
Her shapes and forms are inspired by a wide range of sources; not only design work in wood but also in silver, pottery and by the work of Barbara Hepworth, David Linley, Eric Gill and Roman pottery amongst others. To help her clarify her intent and give her a sense of scale, she will always sketch out a piece before starting turning.
Testament to Caroline’s craftsmanship she has fulfilled a number of varied and unusual commissions. Notably when the ancient and much-loved Tulip tree in the Grange Gardens Lewes had to be felled, it was Caroline the Environment Agency chose to make a baton for the Ouse Valley River project. She has replaced a door knob on the All Saints Centre, produced a wooden base for a dinosaur egg and most recently she recreated a tiny ebony finial, missing from a chair for over 60 years.

SEAFORD GARDENER’S CHRISTMAS DECORATION COLLECTION ON GERMAN TV
Regular readers will, I’m sure, be aware of local gardener, Geoff Stonebanks’ other passion: Christmas! Over the years his spectacular collection of decorations, some going back to the 1930s have garnered much attention. From the Christmas Eve coverage in the Daily Mail back in 2017 through to national TV appearances on This Morning and a Christmas programme on Channel 5. This year something a little different! ZDF, the national German national Broadcaster has arranged to film Geoff and his incredible collection.
Alina Nahler from ZDF’s London office contacted him in early November, having discovered his back
catalogue of Christmas media coverage online. Alina said: ‘ZDF would be very interested in doing a story about you and your Christmas decorations. We would come to your place, film with you and interview you showing the setting up and finished Christmas displays.’
Alina went on to say ‘We would come by when you’re setting up and then another time when you’re done. So, whenever you start setting up the lights and then again in December, so we have the report ready for Christmas season.’ Needless to say, Geoff’s respone was a definite yes.
From hand-carved wooden nutcrackers to scrumptious stollen, there are many German Christmas traditions which have been around for centuries. The German Christmas season officially begins with the first Sunday of Advent, 27th November this year.
Another German invention is the Advent calendar that was originally designed to involve children in the festivities leading up to Christmas. The calendars are usually made of cardboard and have 24 small windows or flaps, one of which is opened on each day leading up to Christmas. Behind each window is a Christmas scene or motif. Geoff has had one every year from an early age and this years’ is quite elaborate. One of the most important Christmas traditions, the decorated Christmas tree, was a custom introduced to Britain by Prince Albert. The idea of an indoor Christmas tree originated in Germany, where Albert was born. This year Geoff will have over 30 trees of varying sizes on display for the cameras.
At time of writing, Geoff has also been approached by the Channel 4 daytime programme, Steph’s Packed Lunch, but nothing definite has been confirmed. You can follow all that takes place this festive season on his website: www.geoffschristmas.co.uk

SHOP LOCAL THIS CHRISTMAS IN SEAFORD!
Seaford Town Council supports Lewes District Council’s ‘Shop Independent’ scheme to encourage shoppers to buy local, including offering free parking in the town on certain days in the lead up to Christmas.
An exciting reward scheme is being run, whereby shoppers using certain local traders will be entered into a prize draw. Shoppers can collect a stamp card from Seaford Tourist Information Office, together with a list of participating traders, and can then start collecting stamps as they use local shops.
Shopping locally supports local businesses, as well as reducing carbon footprints. Seaford town centre is blessed with a variety of independent shops with unique, locally made items, making it the perfect place to indulge in some Christmas shopping locally and support those that keep the town centre thriving.
Seaford Town Council encourages travel to the town centre by foot, cycle or public transport where possible.
For those shopping trips that do require a car, Lewes District Council has generously arranged for free parking in four of its Seaford car parks on the following dates: Saturday 26th November, Saturday 3rd December and Saturday 10th December. The Seaford car parks included are located in Saxon Lane, Sutton Road, Richmond Road and West Street.
Town Clerk, Adam Chugg says: ‘We are very lucky to have so many brilliant independent shops in our town. It’s great for our residents to have these on our doorstep, giving us all the chance to support our local traders.’ The Shop Independent Scheme and offer of free parking is perfectly timed to also support the town’s upcoming annual ‘Christmas Magic’ event on Saturday, 3rd December.
Please note, free parking only applies to the car parks mentioned (Saxon Lane, Sutton Road, Richmond Road and West Street), all other parking restrictions remain unchanged. More information on the campaign with a list of traders taking part can be found here: https://www. visitlewes.co.uk/

At our meeting this month on Thursday 15th December, various club members will be demonstrating ‘Switch on the Christmas Lights’. We are sure that this will be a very jolly meeting and will get us all in the mood for the Christmas festivities. Our competition is entitled A Christmas Carol, which allows our members a good deal of scope for interpretation.
At our October meeting Gill Homer entertained us with her interpretation of Clever Containers. Her designs were very stylish and the flowers were stunning. Our competition entitled Fireworks allowed our members to let their imaginations run riot, as you can see from the photographs.
We do not meet in January but we start our meetings again on 16th February when Michelle King will be demonstrating ‘Tour de France’ and the competition is entitled Très Chic. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for this year are £45, and visitors are always very welcome at £7.50 on the door which includes refreshments. SEAFORD
ALFRISTON &
VALLEY TWINNING ASSOCIATION
To cheer you at the start of January, join us at the traditional Fête des Rois Sunday 8th January 2023 Alfriston Old Chapel Centre 4pm to 6pm
The Feast of Epiphany ‘Festival of Kings’ is traditionally celebrated in France with a puff pastry and frangipane cake known as a ‘Galette des Rois’ (Kings cake) which contains a ‘fève’ – a favour, rather like the sixpence sometimes put into British Christmas puddings. French fèves are often ceramic, can be very decorative and are sometimes handed down through families as heirlooms.
When dividing the galette, an extra slice is symbolically set aside for any unexpected visitor or poor person passing by. Whoever who finds a fève in their slice is given a paper crown to wear and is declared king or queen for the day.
We have some excellent bakers in the Twinning Association, and hope you can join us on a delicious search for one of their treasured fèves.
Membership fees have been waived for everyone in 2022. Events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish, whether or not they speak French. Our membership secretary is Robert at rmorri1847@aol.com.

It was a bad time in 1926 when the choir was formed. The support to the unemployed was limited, and the National Health Service was a long way off in 1948, workhouses were still a feature of poverty and being out of work was serious. The dream of Homes for Hero’s was never realised, and the grind of daily survival was ever present. It was at this time that work was offered in Brighton to alleviate poverty, and a scheme to create the undercliff walk from Brighton to Rottingdean was started. Men were drawn from a wide area, but a significant number came from the mining communities of Wales, well used to the techniques necessary to reform the cliffs – you can still see the remains of the drill holes today. The miners came from the working classes in Wales and would have been ‘Chapel’ born and bred. The Methodist movement had created a network of local communities with singing at the heart of their worship. It is often said that Methodism was ‘Born in Song’, and the miners brought
this love of music with them. The Brighton and Hove Harmonic Society was formed and grew in quality and size, being regularly selected by the BBC as a feature on Friday Night is Music Night.
The choir still operates today under the name Brighton Male Voice Choir and draws members from the local Brighton population and also from Seaford and as far afield as Pevensey, but it has gone through a tough time with COVID and other issues. We can still field a choir of twenty for a concert. We have performed two concerts for Crossways Church in Seaford and have been invited back for a Christmas concert on 3rd December at 7pm.
Our Musical Director, Stephen Roke, has had to retire with ill health; and so we find ourselves without a permanent Musical Director. Jack Simmons, a previous director will be taking the choir up to, and through, the Christmas period, but we need to plan for the year ahead. If any person reading this would like to talk with us about taking on the post, please do call me, and if you know of someone who may be interested, please let us know as well.

A GOOD READ One Day In December
by Josie Silver
It’s the time of year for a feel-good romantic novel, one that can be enjoyed curled up under a blanket with a nutmeg-spiced hot chocolate.
Laurie is unlucky in love and stuck in a career rut. One day she is sitting on a bus when she spots a man reading at the bus stop. He looks up, their eyes meet and somewhere there is a spark. Laurie can’t stop thinking about him, wondering if they will ever meet. Her best friend and roommate Sarah is Laurie’s opposite. She introduces Jack, her new boyfriend to Laurie, anxious that they will hit it off except... her boyfriend is the man from the bus, the guy that Laurie has been dreaming about. No surprises here...classic romantic chick-lit so far.
Cue heartbreak and hiccups, and the quest not to hurt a friend while pursuing your own ‘happily ever

after’. But this novel actually spans a decade (unusual for a romance) of friendship, fate, unrequited feelings, forgiveness, heartache, and love. It’s not a typical love story...there’s good character development. It’s told both from Laurie’s and Jack’s perspectives, with the reader privy to their thoughts and feelings. It has all the nostalgia (and a few of the clichés) of a Richard Curtis film, but the trio of central characters clearly care deeply about each other. Their friendship feels genuine, which in turn makes us care about them and gives the story its heart.
If this book doesn’t get made into a film at some point, I’ll be surprised. Tash Donovan

Greenhavens Network EARTH CARE IN DECEMBER
Greenhavens Network CIO has much to celebrate this winter. We had such a great day at our seed/plant swap event where we saw local green groups from Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven come together. It was an amazing day of connecting, making plans and networking the groups with each other, and of course, some great activities and seeds and plants to swap! Thanks to everyone who came and gave their time for the day. The future feels bright locally with so many Green Heroes working tirelessly to maintain and increase our resilience in such a difficult time as climate change accelerates. I am proud to be part of such a great community of people.
As the dark nights close in and we prepare for Christmas, it’s time to think how we can celebrate Christmas with as little negative impact we can on our precious Earth. As climate change increases, we can all do our bit to keep our carbon footprint low and thus ensure we are not contributing to the ton of waste Christmas brings. Our carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases we release by the actions we take daily. As a mum I know the pressure and temptation to buy new and exciting gifts for the kids and in the run up to Christmas – we are bombarded by adverts all telling us what our Children need… Whether it’s the latest console, or brand new clothes we need to change our minds about what we buy and how we shop to help prevent the environmental catastrophe that is coming if we continue to drain the Earth of its natural resources.
There are choices we can make, buy second hand where you can, use last year’s decorations, swap toys and get together with friends and family to share food. With the awful truth that plastic takes 1,000 years to decompose in landfill and each plastic bottle takes 500 years, we have to stop buying it wherever we can. So this year buy smartly, see if you can get it second-hand, think about what your kids need rather than want. Try buying gifts that are memories, buy tickets for a day out, give your friends and family an experience rather than add needlessly to landfill. Shop local for more
meaningful gifts, it will have a better impact on the earth to buy local and handmade, it will stop the air miles taken for it to be brought to you.
With the threat to our food chain ever pressing, buy gifts that will endlessly give, a fruit tree, fruiting hedgerow or a plant that will help biodiversity grow. Every action we take has a reaction on our Earth – we cannot keep taking from it, it is not an endless resource. Being able to feed ourselves will be of paramount importance in the years to come. So gift your family with the means to become self-sufficient, buy them growing kits, wormeries, compost kits, or a raised bed and help them get started on a growing adventure. A membership to the National Trust, Kew gardens, local kids’ attraction parks, it will be a gift that just keeps on giving.
So keep clear of single-use plastics and create multiuse presents that give joy and pleasure again and again. Be it the blossom from a fruit tree and the fruits that follow, or trips every week to beautiful gardens, or time spent with family creating an edible garden, or getting to visit a family park attraction again and again, even when the finances are low…make better choices this Christmas. Every single action we take leaves a footprint on our Earth, so leave a good one. Our Earth needs us.
From everyone at Greenhavens we wish you a Happy and Peaceful Christmas x

How Safe is Seaford Really? All The Statistics for All of Seaford
Carrying on with our close look at crime in Seaford over the past few months, we now have a very clear picture of crime overall. On the whole, crime rates are very low in Seaford and definitely on a downward trend, but it begs the question; how do our crime rates compare to towns of similar size nearby?
picture – by far the highest contribution to our crime totals are crimes where we behave badly.
There is a noticeable upward trend throughout Seaford since 2019 in reported Violence and Sexual Offences. We cannot speak to the cause of this rise, but we can advise that if you need help, and you are in danger, or if you know someone is in need of help or in danger, always call 999. In this edition, we have a look at our total crime rate compared to Peacehaven, which has a very similar demographic to our own and the results are very consistent.
From this graph we can see that total reported crimes have dropped significantly over the past 36 months (21%) and the downward trend year on year is a fairly consistent 10% per year. When compared to Peacehaven, our reported crime numbers are marginally higher, but the trends are fairly consistent with falling crime rates year on year at a rate of about 8% per year.
By and large, Seaford has a higher population, and is a busier town so it stands to reason that our crime numbers are a little higher. Per capita, our crime is a lot lower. We also had a close look at where the bulk of crimes are committed in Seaford and what type of crimes contribute to the totals. It paints an interesting

This also got us thinking about who makes up the population of Seaford – there is Seaford is a retirement town but that is patently not the case. Remember that all these statistics reflect reported crimes and once again this exercise underlines the importance of reporting every crime. You can also get a more in-depth view (street to street) directly from the Sussex Police website. Seaford & Bishopstone is divided into 5 areas so to have a thorough look at what’s what in yours, head on over to https://www.sussex. police.uk/area/your-area and enter your postcode. Our police resources are allocated based on need and so if no crime is reported, no resource is allocated. Any crime in progress, anything that looks decidedly off, anything where you can see or think someone is in danger, is always a 999 call. Report all other incidents by calling 101 (and expect a long wait) or report online at https://www.sussex.police.uk/reportcrime.
A visible and relevant Neighbourhood Watch helps to keep crime at bay and we need do no more than display a roundel on our front doors to achieve this. While every resident of Seaford and Bishopstone is automatically under the umbrella of what we do, our Association relies on membership to keep doing what we do. It costs £3 per household per year to be Association members, and £2 per household per year for retirees. Joining is so simple too – just head over to www.sandbnhw.org/join, choose the subscription that
suits you and then follow the onscreen prompts. New members will get a member pack in the post and if you need fresh roundels, you can order these online in our little shop where everything is free except the postage.
In closing, on behalf of the Chairman and Committee of your Neighbourhood Watch, have a very blessed Christmas, no matter how you celebrate. Be kind to one another and generous with your smiles.
Thank you for making Seaford a truly lovely town. We wish you well and nothing but the best for 2023. Warmest regards from all of us, Mark, Graham, Nicky and Philippa

SEAFORD STAMP & POST CARD CLUB
A Winter’s Day in Seaford in 1926
We can learn much about Seaford’s past from studying old postcards of the town. Their photographs often provide a visual record of buildings long demolished, and document changes in transport and fashion. But postcards can also illustrate how some things remain the same. Many Seaford residents will identify with the scene on this postcard entitled Tobogganing on Seaford Head, which was posted almost a hundred years ago, in January 1926. The photograph shows groups of children and adults clustered on the snowy slopes of the Head – some pulling sledges, just as they would today,
The message on the reverse of the card reads Last Sunday afternoon ‘on Seaford Head’ (for your collection), revealing that the photograph had been taken only days earlier. In the early twentieth century postcards were a popular way of sharing newsworthy
events such as nowstorms, and it was therefore important to produce them as quickly as possible. The photographer was probably Walter Wynter (1868 – 1938), who published many cards depicting Seaford events, including those related to weather.
The recipient of the card was William John Hook, who according to the 1921 census was an ‘undertaker manager’ living in South Norwood with his wife and five children. The card tells us that William was a postcard collector – a hobby which is still very much alive today!
Seaford and District Stamp and Postcard Club meet monthly from January 2023 at the Con Club on the second Wednesday of the month, from 7.15pm onwards. Visitors welcome, light refreshments available.
There will be no meeting in December 2022.

5 WAYS TO KEEP CHRISTMAS STRESSFREE FOR DEMENTIA SUFFERERS
By Nial Joyce, Clifden
House Dementia Care Centre
If you’re hosting Christmas this year for a friend or family member with dementia, follow our five simple tips to make the festive season merry and stress-free for all.
1. Twas the night before Christmas
People with dementia often have problems with orientation and memorising instructions. They may know their way around their own home, but a new place can be bewildering.
Print out (or get your children to design) some very simple and clear signs to put on the doors to all the key rooms (toilet, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, etc). Illustrations, as well as words, are really helpful. Then as soon as they arrive, walk them around your house and show them where everything is.
2. Christmas morning
Some studies indicate that as many as 20 per cent of people with Alzheimer’s will experience increased confusion, anxiety and agitation in the late afternoon and early evening, known as ‘sundowning’. So embrace the crisp winter’s morning and plan your more stimulating activities early on, when the person with dementia should be feeling fresher. A short walk outside is a great idea as this helps to regulate the internal body clock
3. All the trimmings
Pigs in blankets, stuffing, Yorkshire puds, even brussel sprouts – a Christmas dinner is a truly wonderful thing, but all those extras soon add up to a mountainous plate of food. Bear in mind that a heaving plate can be daunting for someone who may have difficulties eating. The person with dementia may also feel self-conscious at a large dinner table, so avoid making them the centre of attention.
4. All is Quiet
In quieter moments – such as when the family’s slumped in front of the TV mid-afternoon – have
some low-key activities to hand. Look through old photo albums together, put on one of their favourite feel-good comedy shows, or simply involve the person with dementia in your own activities. Designate a quiet room and allow time for a nap.
5. Silent night
Around 40 per cent of people with dementia will suffer sleep disruption, but there are a few things you can do to try to minimise this. Find out what their usual bedtime routine is and try to replicate this as closely as possible. Add some familiar and comforting items to their bedside table such as a family photograph, nightlight or ornament. A dementia clock is also a really good tool. Leave night-lights on in the hallway, and keep the bathroom door open. You may want to consider a stair gate to prevent any nasty accidents, and give you peace of mind.
Merry Christmas!

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB
Cuckmere House school held their Science Fair on 2nd November, which was sponsored by Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club and 8billionideas (an education company).
The teachers and Lions examined all the exhibits and certificates were awarded for Overall Winner in each year.
The competition’s aims were to inspire local children and help them to develop several skills including teamworking, communication and presenting.
The bright eyes and excitement throughout the ROAR project showed that the experience was really appreciated by the pupils, teachers and Lions.
There are seven other schools in the area who are also participating in the project sponsored by the Lions club. They are Barcombe, Wivelsfield, Plumpton, Hamsey, Denton, Cradle Hill and Seaford Primary schools.

Getting Your Home Ready for a Winter Sale
Contrary to many recent news articles about the housing market, we can confirm that people in Seaford are still buying and selling homes.
So, if you are considering putting your home up for sale after Christmas, here are three tips to help you get your property noticed for all the right reasons.
First impressions, kerb appeal, the Primacy Effect
Whatever you want to call it, there’s no escaping that people make snap judgements on a property when they see it for the first time. However, in winter months, that first impression can be hindered by the following:
l Mud-splattered front doors.
l Tired-looking front gardens and drives.
l Dark walk-ups to the entrance.
l Your home’s number not being visible from the street.
With a little awareness and action, the above are all relatively easy fixes and make a big difference.
Make your home cosy and welcoming
It may be cold outside, so creating a comfortable feel for people viewing your home is essential. A rule of thumb regarding a home’s temperature when potential buyers view it is that it shouldn’t feel cold to someone wearing an outdoor coat. And the flip side is it shouldn’t be too warm (which may be unlikely due to the ongoing energy costs) that
someone would need to take their coat off to cool down.
Choosing the right estate agent
No matter what season you’re selling in, you can dramatically increase your chances of a successful sale by selecting the best estate agent for you. For example, pretty much everyone starts searching for a new home by jumping online. This makes not only professional photography a must but also the necessity to offer virtual tours of your home. This is something we offer free to our sellers and makes a huge difference.
If you are considering moving in the new year, please don’t hesitate to call us today with any questions.
And here’s to a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas is almost here folks and it’ll soon be time for that fella in the red coat to come sneaking around. Yep, your neighbourhood Fox is on the prowl and shortly after Santa has finished pulling presents out of his sack, your local Fox will be busy trying to pull half a turkey out of your bin bag.
Foxes have lived among us for centuries and, just like Christmas, they’re celebrated in folklore and myths all around the world. Whether the story belongs to the Greeks, Japanese, Celts, Native Americans, Disney or Roald Dahl it is always the same – the Fox is portrayed as cunning, slippery and devious. I prefer intelligent, adaptable and resourceful – and it’s these traits that have helped the Fox to survive in the modern world. It was the modern world that transformed the Fox’s wild woods into endless agricultural fields, towns, cities, tower blocks and cul-de-sacs. Traditionally, in the face of development Britain’s wildlife has silently been displaced and died. But where others fled destruction the Fox, like any shrewd opportunist, saw a brave new world of golden opportunities where the dustbins overfloweth and where the streets are paved with cast-away kebabs and finger-lickin’ chicken.
And for me this is the chapter in the Fox’s story that does indeed seem mythical: that in urban Britain there are wild dogs living among us. I can look out my bedroom window and see a relative of the Wolf, Dingo, Jackal and Coyote casually sauntering across my lawn. It’s a touch of the Serengeti in suburban Sussex. Studies undertaken by the University of Brighton have estimated that there are 20 Foxes per square kilometre in the city. Of course, tradition dictates that some people do not like Foxes. As a child I always viewed the Boxing Day hunt as the antithesis to Christmas; a reminder that amidst this season of goodwill there are still people who are proud to dress up in costumes in a public celebration of their cruelty.
It’s in the bleak midwinter that Foxes are at their most vocal. The blood-curdling, human-like scream of the vixen sounds like something from a Hammer Horror film. This foxy lady is only fertile for a few days and her scream advertises her availability and sparks bow-wows, barks and bickering from amorous dog Foxes. Her cubs will be born about fifty-two days after mating and emerge from their earths in April.
So this Christmas if you’ve had it with the plastic snowmen, the fake tree and the fake sentiments, take a short walk away from it all and out into the darkness. Listen for the sound of wild dogs howling at the moon, the sound of survival. Let it stir something wild in your heart. Merry Christmas everybody and best wishes for 2023.

LOCAL BUSINESS BEATS ENERGY BILLS WITH
SOLAR PANELS
Local business Rathfinny Wine Estate is set to insure itself against fluctuating energy bills – by installing solar panels funded by the community. Rathfinny has partnered with Brighton Energy Co-op (BEC), who will install solar panels on Rathfinny’s roof – at no cost to Rathfinny – and then sell the winery the cheap electricity generated.
This means that solar electricity replaces a portion of Rathfinny’s grid electricity – with consequent cost savings. The solar electricity price is also fixed, meaning Rathfinny is insured against future energy price increases.
Local people are funding this impressive 2400-panel solar system by investing in Brighton Energy Co-op. BEC currently works with 50 other local businesses, universities, colleges and schools to install commuinity-
owned solar in this way. In Mid Sussex, Bolney Wine Estate has beneffitted from BEC solar panels for the last three years. And at Rathfinny, the solar electricity generated will reduce carbon emissions by 180 tonnes per year.
Brighton Energy’s community-led approach to renewable energy is a great match with Rathfinny’s sustainable ethos and their low intervention, traditional vineyard methods.
Mark and Sarah Driver of Rathfinny Wine Esate said: ‘Brighton Energy community solar is a great fit for us, as we’ve applied to gain the prestigious B-Corp status for our sustainable business.’
B-Corp status is a certification of social and environmental performance. To become a B-Corp companies are required to incorporate social and environmental objectives into governing documents; well-known brands such as Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Nespresso and The Body Shop have all been certified as B-Corps.

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD
Each year our club organises a short holiday for its members. This year’s holiday took place in October, and the destination was the ‘English Riviera’ A party of 35 members, wives, partners, guests and friends left Seaford by coach and drove to their hotel, on the harbour front in Torquay. The five-day stay, at the Regina Hotel, included trips to Teignmouth, Exeter, Plymouth and, on the last afternoon, a memorable visit to Buckfast Abbey. On the last evening we went to Babbacombe Theatre to see a typical seaside variety show, which rounded off our holiday in style, before our drive home the following day.
The Probus Club of Seaford is aimed at retired or semi-retired gentlemen living in Seaford and surrounding areas. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, at 12.15 at Seaford Golf Club, Firle Road, for a two-course meal followed by a speaker. For further details please phone: (01323) 893760.

The wind was still blowing a hooley but it had just stopped raining and the sun was out for the first time in days, encouraging volunteers at our garden at the Crouch to work as industriously as Santa’s elves. Take Brian and Val for instance, who realised that Christmas was fast approaching. Much like the delight of seeing the baubles anew when the decorations are fetched down from the loft, they rediscovered the wooden trees they made from pallets last year, along with some jolly log Father Christmases adorned with woolly scarves knitted by Steph’s mum. All they needed was a little TLC, with a bit of hammering here and there along with replacement of the snowmen’s twiggy arms. So you might have thought they would have stopped at that point. Wrong: Val had been saving huge allium seed heads with a view to giving them some sprayon glitz. By the time you read this Maggie’s sales table will have a fine selection of environmentally friendly covetable decorations.
And talking of the environment, Tina, from local green organisation On the Verge, came in with packets of yellow rattle seeds bought with funding from Ouse Valley Climate Action, which in turn had won National Lottery money. She said that On the Verge had been distributing packets among interested organisations and schools, and had already planted bulbs and sown yellow rattle seeds at Chyngton Primary. Tina explained that getting a population of yellow rattle flowering and self-seeding in your garden was one of the best ways to establish a meadow. They needed one good frost to trigger germination, with seedlings from April. Before sowing, scalp the grass and scarify it with a rake. The plants will drop seed from June
so don’t cut the grass in this area until the seeds are ripe. For more info about wildflowers growing locally go to renaturingseaford.org.
The youngsters from Charlie Bears kindergarten at the nextdoor Mercread Centre are regular visitors to the garden and use the children’s garden to one side of the classroom and a bed between Bob’s herbs and the fruit-growing area too, where tomatoes were still ripening on their outdoor vines in early November. Beth had garlic seed for them to plant and, with their eye on the environment too, they were also making pictograms to show which of their plants need not be watered. Chard and spinach next!
We will also be welcoming Ellis, with his support worker, from St John’s college, Brighton, who is also all set to volunteer and learn about horticulture.
Meanwhile, to return to gardening with nature and a reminder that you can’t just leave it to itself, Neill and Brian were at work mending the wildlife pond fence, this having suffered a little wind damage.
The garden is open each Wednesday from 9.30am until 12.30pm so please pay us a pre-festivities visit, and have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas.

A VIEW FROM THE POTTING SHED
December, and Christmas is coming, with or without fat geese. Apparently this most traditional of Christmas poultry is making a bit of a comeback, part of the appeal being the natural rearing of the birds on pastureland.
Through the centuries goose held pride of place on British tables at times of celebration; at Michaelmas in late September the leaner, grass-fed green goose was served, at Christmas a grain, finished fatter goose. The goose fat was also very much prized, something else that has reappeared in our shops. Christmas time is full of tradition, roast turkey with all the trimmings, or maybe a fat goose.
HW ATTO DO JOBS FOR DECEMBER
3 Make your own Christmas Wreath using strong wire and evergreens from the garden, plus fir cones, ribbons and berries.
3 Forced bulbs stored in the dark should be moved to a cool window sill when leaf tips are 1-2 inches high. When leaves reach 4 inches, move to a warmer place.
3 Potted roses can be hard pruned in the greenhouse for an early start next year.
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD
On behalf of the Seaford & District Horticultural Society our Chair Sara wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope to see you at the first social evening of 2023, 7pm at St Luke’s, Walmer Road on Tuesday 31st January, when Richard Oakeley will present The Story of Louvain Organic Nursery. The nursery is set on the edge of the Downs in Peacehaven.
BERGENIA IPOT C OFTHE MONT H
Let’s give the Bergenia –elephant’s ears – some good press, because it is unlikely to feature in your list of favourite plants. That’s hardly fair considering these easy-to-grow, hardy, evergreen perennials make a year-round contribution to the garden. Yes Bergenia has large leathery leaves, the elephant’s ears, but they can be tinged with deep reds and bronze in winter. The flowers, depending on the variety, emerge from early spring, brightening your border with their upright clusters in shades of pink, purple, red and white, providing an early source of nectar for bees. Bergenia grows well in most reasonably fertile soils, but not permanently wet sites. It provides ground cover without being too thuggish, good between deciduous plants towards the front of the border, also suitable with slightly improved soils in gravel gardens. The plants will accept both sun and shade and will also put up with neglect and inhospitable sites. Often found in difficult corners, the common Bergenia cordifolia with its dull green leaves could explain some of this plant’s unpopularity.
For good winter colour Bergenia needs light and you must also choose those cultivars that have leaves that colour well. Less rich soil will also encourage winter colouring.
Bergenia purpurascens ‘Irish Crimson,’ has upper and lower red leaf surfaces with purple-red flowers (see photo). Good with snowdrops.
Bergenia ‘Mrs Crawford,’ is more compact, with deep plum red winter foliage and white flowers. For more choices – rhs.org.uk or bethchatto. co.uk. Beth Chatto was a bergenia fan.

The Annual General Meeting was held at the Downs Leisure Centre on 13th October, and there was a record turnout of members. After all the difficulties of the past few years, when two years ago the AGM had to be held by post because of COVID and last year members were still worried about going out and mixing with others, it was good to see so many out and about.
After the formal business, a video was shown which was produced by Chris Conil (2truemedia production) based on a book published by Lynn Lawson entitled The House on the Cliff. It was about a large house which was built on Seaford Head at the edge of the town in 1897 for Maria Fleming Baxter and her husband Herbert as a seaside retreat. It was named Cliff Cottage despite having nine bedrooms and three floors, including a basement. The 1903 Census showed three servants. There was a brick wall round the garden which still remains in place today, but on the seaward side of the wall was a wide public footpath up Seaford Head. This has been eroded away by the sea. At this time Seaford was being ‘discovered’ as a quiet seaside holiday town and people came by train as the line was completed in 1864.
Herbert died in 1905 and Maria in 1907, the latter leaving Cliff Cottage to her solicitor who used it as a seaside retreat until 1916. During his ownership there was a lot of building done in Seaford and many private schools opened. By 1916 there were also tens of thousands of soldiers stationed in Seaford. The house went through a number of hands, with the still-existing flat viewing area and brick archway from Cliff Road being built in the 1930s.
In WWII the house was occupied by the army and a turret lookout post was built at the corner of the brick garden wall. This can still be seen. After that it was run as the Splash Point Hotel for a short time before being advertised for sale as a potential school or convalescent home. It was bought by developers who in November 1959 applied to demolish the house and build flats. At this time there was another big explosion of development in Seaford and eventually the developers built houses along Cliff Road. The House on the Cliff was demolished in the early 1960s.
This was a fascinating story about a Seaford landmark which is remembered by many older Seaford residents. To discover the full story the video can be viewed on YouTube and the book will be readily available after reprinting as the first print run sold out.
The other activities of Seaford u3a, the home and hall groups, the pub lunches and the outings are all running and as popular as ever.

TREES FOR SEAFORD
National Tree Planting Week
As I write this the weather has just switched from the spookily balmy October temperatures to something a bit more seasonal. The October weather had even brought new blossom out on the recently planted cherry trees in Kingston Way!
Trees for Seaford is gearing up for tree planting activities in the run up to Christmas – having a training refresher, arranging deliveries of trees, woodchip, stakes, ties, strimmer guards and more hi-vis jackets – not to mention the biscuits! We will also be updating residents in the planting streets and marking out the precise sites very soon. With luck, we won’t have a wild storm or torrential rain on the intended main planting days,
which will be the 26th and 27th November, and 4th December. Some replacements are also planned for a few spots where some of our past trees have sadly not survived – luckily not too many! Chyngton Avenue, Mason Road and Farm Close, the Peace Garden, Catholic Church and the Crouch are all due to receive a variety of trees, including the Queen Elisabeth acers, hawthorns, rowans, pears, cherries and amelanchiers.
We are lending our muscle and other support to the Friends of Sutton Downs in mid-November to help plant the wildlife hedge and some fruit trees (see more at www.seafuture.org/friends-of-sutton-downs) Additionally, we are also helping the new Heathfield tree planting group to get launched, by providing practical help and advice this season. So a busy time coming – we will be topping up our Vitamin D levels and keeping in trim for Christmas as we contribute to renaturing Seaford.
Hartfield Road
Although this is not a Trees for Seaford project, we are delighted to see that the ESCC contractors have started work on Hartfield Road to grind out the stumps of the old diseased elm trees, with the eventual planting of a mixed variety of new trees, which will in time bring some welcome shade and greenery to the verges. If you welcome the work the county council is doing replanting these areas, please give them positive feedback and hopefully they will undertake more removal and replanting work in future!
Do join us
It is a pleasure to welcome several new volunteers keen to help with planting, and indoor admin – in particular, some wanting to help with the website and compliance with all our legal requirements! We promise a warm welcome to a friendly and inclusive group. If you are a newcomer it can be a good way to meet people too! And finally, with infamous strong Seaford winds expected, please do get in touch if you notice young street trees which need re-staking – or other ‘treemergency needs’.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF SEAFORD
It been a busy month for the Inner Wheel ladies visiting Hilliers Shopping Outlet, holding a coffee morning, and Crafty Ladies and Book Club meetings, but they have also been fund raising. Past President, Andrea Butti hosted an afternoon at her house, where members congregated to fill shoe boxes for the Charity Link to Hope. The Charity aims to combat poverty and give humanitarian aid to the most disadvantaged. The poorest, especially people struggling to survive in rural villages that lack basic amenities, are the most vulnerable and most exploited. The shoe boxes are sent to families and the elderly in countries including Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria. They are filled with items including toiletries, scarves, hats and gloves, stationery items, family games, confectionery, soft toys and candles. Afterwards tea and cakes were enjoyed by all.
On Thursday 20th October, members attended the Inner Wheel District International Rally at Ashington, West Sussex. The International President for District 25 is Kay Young, Past President of Seaford Inner Wheel. Various clubs hosted a table to raise money for the District International’s Charity AfriKids. Seaford ran a Tombola stall. A delicious buffet was enjoyed by everyone, and a presentation was given by a speaker from AfriKids. The charity aims to help people in Northern Ghana, where more than half of all its people live in poverty. They support families and address issues, such as Spirit Children, to keep their youngsters safe, healthy and in school, providing hope for future generations.
Come and Join Us for Friendship, Interest and Fun
After a year as our District 25 Chairman, I have taken on the position of District Membership and Development Officer, a key role for our future growth as a service and friendship organisation. For Inner Wheel to thrive new members need to be attracted to Clubs. So why not join us, have fun and attain satisfaction by serving your community?
What is Inner Wheel? It is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the world. From its origin in Manchester in 1924, there are now more than 109,000 members in 104 countries.
Nevertheless, we must prioritise the ambition of maintaining and boosting the impressive numbers as recently clubs have been disbanded and members lost through the pandemic.
Seaford Inner Wheel Club founded nearly 75 years ago is healthily active with around 42 members who manage exciting and rewarding projects, both local and international, for charitable causes, produce craftwork, provide catering, arrange coffee mornings and afternoon teas, run a book club, and organise trips. All have something to give and, above all – our key word – friendship.
The year 2024 will see the centenary of Inner Wheel, an occasion to savour and set to take place where it started – Manchester. All Inner Wheel members will be entitled to visit and take part. First, though, join us at Seaford as there is much to look forward to before then. For more information see https:// innerwheel.co.uk/district-25/ or contact us by email at: innerwheeldistrict25@gmail.com. There is no obligation to join, but we are confident you won’t be able to resist.

On Friday 4th November after five years of patience, persistence and hard work, Friends of Bishopstone station finally finished phase one of the restoration project to save the Grade II listed Art Deco building of Bishopstone Station. This culminated in the grand official opening of the Old Parcel Room Community Hub, which will serve the local community.
It was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, pictured above with Barbara Mine, Chair of Friends of Bishopstone Station and the Chair of Lewes district Council. They were delighted to have Tim Dunn television presenter of Architecture the Railways Built presiding over the ceremony (photo above right)along with special guest Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes.
Seaford Town Crier started the opening with his wonderful words and it was closed by the Seaford Piper piping everyone into the room. The Railway Heritage Trust, Sussex Community Rail Partnership, Community Rail Network, Govia Thameslink Railway Network, the Department of Transport, local councils and the community have all supported this project with actions and funding.
Any groups and organisations wishing to book the hub please email: friendsofbishopstonestation@yahoo.com.
