Welcome Welcome to the September issue of Seaford Scene. It’s all happening this month - Seaford Live! ® is back, the Artwave Festival is continuing, and the Battle of Britain Day is celebrated. There’s something stirring at Seaford Museum! Head down to the Martello Tower to find out about the new building plans and the return of the ‘painted lady’, and there’s free entry on the 14th and 15th for National Heritage Open Days. On a floral theme there’s news from Seaford in Bloom, Seaford Afternoon Flower Club and the flower festival with St Leonard’s and St Lukes churches. There’s country music at the Barn Theatre and MAD’s Music Hall of Fun. All this and so much more...enjoy!

FRIDGE DOOR CALENDAR TO CUT OUT AND KEEP

Hollywood glamour is coming to Seaford on 27th September, so dust off your evening dress and prepare to be thrilled by a real Oscar-winning performance at the opening of our second year. Our 2013-14 film programme will be opened by our star guest, the composer Stephen Warbeck, whose original score for ‘Shakespeare in Love’ won a coveted Academy Award. Stephen’s film credits are numerous and include ‘Mrs Brown’, ‘Billy Elliott’, ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, and ‘Charlotte Gray’. After the screening Stephen will give a talk about his music and he’s promised to bring his friend Oscar too! Ticket prices for this event include wine. Evening dress is optional but how often do you get to go to the Oscars? Fri 27th September OSCAR NIGHT screening of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ (cert 15) with a talk by the composer Stephen Warbeck. Fri 11th October ‘Lincoln’ (cert 12A) Daniel Day Lewis made Oscar history, winning ‘Best Actor’, for the third time with his portrayal of President Lincoln in the final days of the civil war as he maneuvered to abolish slavery. Fri 25th October ‘Untouchable’ (cert 15) A culture-clash heart warming comedy about class, disability and friendship based on a true story; ‘the second most popular French film’ and winner of 7 international awards. We are Seaford Community Cinema, a not-for profit organisation run entirely by local volunteers. You’ll find a warm welcome at our screenings, which are held in the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane, on selected Friday evenings from September to June. Members receive several benefits including a £1 discount on ticket prices, and membership remains at £10 per person. You can join via the website or pick up a flyer from the Tourist Information Centre. Tickets from our website, on the door or from the Tourist Information Centre. Visit www.seafordcinema. org to sign up for our film programme newsletter. Stephen Warbeck receiving the Oscar for Best Original Score.

Seaford MuSeuM’S bold new project for Seafront For years Seaford Museum’s brochure has had to carry the words “Regretfully, owing to the nature of the listed building, there is no lift or wheelchair access”. Now thanks to the generous offer of a donation of £200,000 from the Keith Baker Memorial Will Trust Charity, there is a real possibility that the Museum can be made more accessible, both to wheelchair users and to other visitors and Museum members who are less mobile. In addition, by the use of creative design and modern materials, the Tower, which has been without its drawbridge for over 40 years, will have its original front entrance reinstated with a new pedestrian footbridge, greatly improving the exterior appearance of the Tower. In addition, a lift will be installed within the massive walls of the Tower. After over three years of painstaking planning and design development, only three steps remain to be cleared:

SOPHISTICATED MOBILE DISCO eXcluSIVelY for partY people of a certaIn VIntaGe claSSIc HItS froM tHe fIftIeS, SIXtIeS, SeVentIeS & eIGHtIeS SMoKe & lIGHtInG aS deSIred HouSe partIeS W retIreMent baSHeS bIrtHdaY celebratIonS W tHeMed nIGHtS cIVIl cereMonIeS W uncIVIl cereMonIeS annIVerSarIeS W ScHool reunIonS pub GIGS W SHIndIGS W bowlS & Golf clubS DISCOUNTS FOR REGULAR BOOKINGS

1. The consent, and a new lease, from Seaford Town Council, who are the Tower’s owners; 2. Planning and Scheduled Ancient Monument consents; 3. Obtaining the outstanding funding. The Museum Trustees understand that a report will be going to the Seaford Town Council Community Services Committee in the near future, which will hopefully result in the Council’s support for the project. Formal planning and Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent applications will also be lodged, but as a great deal of work has been done in the pre-application stage, particularly by the project’s Consulting Architects, Morgan Carn Partnership of Brighton, the Trustees are optimistic that the project will receive the active support of Seaford Town Council, English Heritage and the Lewes DC Planners. The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of £250,000, and a bid for the remaining £50,000 of funding is being prepared to put before the Heritage Lottery Fund. If that bid fails, other sources of funding will need to be sought. Commenting on the proposals, Kay Turvey, the Museum Chairman said: “Over the last thirty years the possibility of making the Museum accessible to people with mobility problems had seemed like a Utopian dream. I am now looking forward in the hope that I will never again have to stand outside the Museum door apologising for our lack of access or watching with deep anxiety as people struggle with the challenging stairs. Over the years we have done our best through videos, the loan of items, giving illustrated talks and responding to research enquiries online, but nothing can replace the physical experience of a visit. The Keith Baker Trust has made the Utopian dream become a real possibility.” Photo: Artist’s impression of the new pedestrian footbridge.

THE MERCREAD YOUTH CENTRE As the summer season has drawn to a close with the start of a new academic year, we are able to reflect on successes and look forward to opportunities in the future. The summer holiday has been busy with various activities at Mercread Youth Centre. Our transition project helped intoduce Seaford Head School students, especially new Year 7s, to the opportunities at the Centre, with fun activities designed to help the young people make new friends and support their progression through school. There has also been a good uptake in other sessions on offer, incuding free football at the Downs Leisure Centre and other activities. Mercread Youth Centre also hosted a project supporting Year 11 leavers with plans for their future. We can anticipate the continuation of sessions for young people at Mercread Youth Centre in the following year. Opportunities to join Youth Club sessions from Year 6 upwards and specific youth work will take place at the centre. This will be extended with other activities in the community including football sessions. Further details can be obtained from the Centre or by following us on Facebook.

The Riffz and finally playing out with Kitten and The Hip (left). Cllr. Anthony White, Mayor of Seaford and member of the Base Committee said “ We were overwhelmed with the support and the interest in businesses wanting to sponsor us and wanting to be a part of it next year.” He added, “A huge thank you to those who helped us make it possible by either supporting, sponsoring, helping or just coming down and enjoying the day.” The weather was glorious throughout the day, providing the perfect backdrop for the fantastic and talented musicians in Seaford. There are over 10 bands now that hire The Base for their rehearsals and there are still plans to put in a disabled toilet and running water in the kitchen to make the building hireable for other groups.

THE PARISH OF ST LEONARD AND ST LUKE FLOWER FESTIvAL St Leonard’s Church in Church Street, Seaford will be holding the biennial Flower Festival this September and invite those who love flowers and the peace of our Church to visit this Festival. The Flower titles will be interpreted and arranged by church members and Seaford afternoon and evening Flower Clubs, whose creativity has delighted visitors over several years. This year our theme is inspired by the A & M hymn 415 ‘Bread for the World’. Displays will depict lines from this hymn of harvest time and the rewards of those who labour to produce food to nurture our bodies from our green and plentiful land. We hope that visitors will give some thought to lands where food is not so readily grown and famine and starvation are common. Ours is the opportunity to remember them and provide ‘Bread for the World’. Behind our displays there lies spiritual thinking in the words of Jesus “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger”. Our harvest thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday September 22nd at 9.30am. We welcome donations of tinned and packet food for distribution locally.

Festival dates for your information: Fri 13th, Sat14th and Mon15th September 10am – 5pm Sunday 15th September after Family Service until 5pm Saturday morning we hold our Festival Market with stalls and refreshments, along the church pathway and in the Hall. A vIEW FROM THE POTTING SHED

o

what

to d

jobS to do In SepteMber

3Start planting out Spring Cabbage about 6 to 8 inches apart. September is the traditional month to plant out garlic, as it likes a period of cold weather to get started. Also sow seed for winter lettuce. 3Reduce much of the excess heavy growth of grapes so the fruit can develop into large bunches. 3Plant out new perennials or divide up existing plants such as Rudbeckia, Lobelia , Sedums, Asters and Phlox. 3Lift tender perennials and take under cover for the winter. Give the plants a trim and a feed after repotting. Divide up if the plants are quite large. 3Prepare the lawn for the winter. Reduce mowing, remove thatch, aerate and top dress.

The horticultural industry makes millions of pounds from compost sales but still needs to invest more in finding something better than peat. If you find it gardeners will use it and peat sales will disappear! Mike Parker ic o op f

the m

th on

In 1999 all National Trust Gardens moved over to a peat-free basis for all of their gardens. They have since recommended to all their members that they follow this principle in order to prevent peat bogs being destroyed for future generations. It is said that only 3% of the earth’s surface is covered by peat yet it stores more carbon than twice the world’s area of forests. Peat is a vital resource for the storage of carbon and protection against climate change. We have all seen the effects of climate change on our gardens with water shortages, then floods, heat waves then severe cold. We can all therefore do our bit by at least trying to reduce the amount of peat used in our gardens. However important the cause I do think that the existing selection of peat-free alternative composts leave much to be desired. The fact is that using natural peat still ticks all the boxes when it comes

to sowing seed or growing plants in pots, tubs or just taking cuttings.

t

S

hould I now choose to use “peat-free” compost or should I carry on using my preferred multi-purpose peat-based type?

GARLIC

Garlic can be planted outdoors in this area from September. It grows best in light, well-dug soil with added Growmore or Blood, Fish and Bone. It does not like heavy or clay soil. Clear the ground of all weeds and rake fine. Carefully break up the garlic bulb into individual cloves. Obtain your garlic bulbs from a garden centre or catalogue. Do not use shop or supermarket-bought bulbs. Plant the clove’s root down about two inches deep and six inches apart. For the next few months they will be making root growth so not much will be happening above ground. Keep birds at bay so they don’t lift the cloves. During February the long dark green leaves should be through. Apart from watering and general maintenance there’s not much else to do.You could try planting a back-up crop by sowing the cloves into individual cell trays and leave them to overwinter in a cold frame ready to plant out in the spring. Garlic is always useful in the kitchen so why not grow some now? You could always enter some in next year’s Horticultural Show!!

mEmBERS’ NOTicE BOARD We resume our series of Social Evenings on Thursday 26th at 7pm. The guest speaker this month is Steven Moore from Rapkyns Nursery, Broad Oak, Sussex. His subject is “Extending the Season”. The usual raffle and refreshments will be available.

SEAfORD cOmmuNiTY gARDEN If you’ve been struck by how many people you’ve seen mysteriously spotted with flecks of bluishgreen don’t worry, it’s not some strange disease but evidence that they have been gainfully employed painting the classroom at Seaford Community Garden at the Crouch.

Green Waste Recycling Service

Fortunately we seem to have lots of volunteers who are more or less handy with a paintbrush, which is just as well as it takes a fair few man and woman hours to apply two coats to the exterior of a 5 x 4 metre wooden building. But by the time you read this the job should be done and the classroom protected from the worst of Seaford weather and ready for use. While all this has been going on James has been sorting out the irrigation system so that we can harvest water from the classroom roof and put it onto the garden via our water butts. We are also hoping that as well as saving water, putting in soaker hose will mean that Mike in particular won’t have to go down to the garden to water every day. Mike and Robert are continuing to improve the walkways now that the major construction work is over. With all this extra work going on we are fortunate to be able to welcome new volunteers including Stephanie, Viv, Zoe and Maggie, who have all been working in the garden and sharing their varied horticultural knowledge – and we always have room for more helpers. Meanwhile Diana has been continuing to show people how to take cuttings to increase the number of plants available for the garden and sales table. One of the pleasures of being a volunteer is being able to show visitors around the garden and we’re delighted to have welcomed so many first-timers this summer and look forward to welcoming them again. While our fruit and veg are there to be bought for a donation, there’s no obligation as we just love to spread the pleasure. Come and see for yourself every Wednesday morning and Saturday mornings during the harvesting season. Lastly, we’d like to wish good luck to Cameron and Richard when they start at Plumpton College in September. Many thanks for all their efforts and we hope that they will still come back and see us often. The Garden Team

Seaford in Bloom The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day took place on Sunday July 14th and for the 6th year running was sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents. For once the sun came out and the wind dropped, which helped this to be a very successful fund-raising event. About 300 people visited the eight beautiful open gardens - 150 cream teas were sold - and this, together with sponsorship, resulted in a sum of £1,950 being raised towards the floral displays in Seaford. The generosity of the sponsors, the kindness of those who opened their gardens and the enthusiastic support of everyone who visited is greatly appreciated by SIB Chairman Isabel Stephenson and her Committee as it makes all their hard work worthwhile. Thanks also go to all those who volunteered to “sit on the gates” during the very hot afternoon. Full details about Seaford in Bloom, including photos of all of this year’s Open Gardens, can be found on our website at: www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sib” These were this year’s eight Open Gardens: 50 Beacon Drive (top); ‘High Trees’ Firle Road (middle); Oak House, Cuckmere Road (bottom); 3 Sandore Road; Old Tiles, Cuckmere Road; Burford, Cuckmere Road; 4 Sunningdale Close; 1 The Barn House, Firle Road.

Seaford GardenInG club We have at last been blessed with some summer weather even if it was a little warm for some of us! Still, it was good to go without a coat and feel the sun on our skins. Of course the gardens were not too happy about the lack of rain and everyone got tired doing so much watering. Long may it last!! We did not have a talk in July but I thought I would tell you about the three outings for April, May and June – all very varied and enjoyable. The first destination, in April, was to Down Place near Petersfield – a lovely spring garden displaying hundreds of different varieties of daffodils and hellebores, together with a long herbaceous border. The house stands on a hill with the garden sloping down to a valley with beautiful views. A 20-strong herd of deer in an adjoining field came into view to greet us. The owners gave us a personal tour relating the history of the house and surrounding land. They then served us a delicious tea (delectable home made cakes) on the terrace. We did not wish to leave as it was so peaceful. A most enjoyable afternoon in the company of two nice people dedicated to their home. Our second outing in May was to the pretty and inspiring gardens at Charts Edge near Westerham in Kent. The light rain ceased on our arrival when we were met by the head gardener who gave us a talk on the garden’s history and restoration. There were woods to walk in, colourful flower beds, a very attractive water feature, and plants to purchase. We were then served tea and delicious homemade cakes before returning to our coach for the journey home.

Hever Castle – one of my personal favourites – was chosen for our June outing. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny afternoon to view either the castle or the colourful gardens (or both)! Some of our members walked the perimeter of the large lake while others tried to dodge the naughty spouts in the water feature – some not making it and getting quite wet! ROTARY CLUB OF SEAFORD Club visit to Harlingen Late June 2013 found members and partners of the Rotary Club of Seaford visiting friends from the Rotary Club of Harlingen, Netherlands. Arriving on Thursday afternoon, the adventurers settled in to their accommodation, and prepared for an excellent evening barbecue at the farm of a Harlingen Rotarian. Shame about the rain and cold. On Friday morning all gathered together for a triple mission. First we went to the harbour area of Harlingen to inaugurate a “Friendship Bench” partly funded by Seaford Rotary. Then on to a small museum to learn about the exploits of local man Willem Barendsz and his attempts to find the Northeast Passage through the Arctic, and to see the construction site of a replica of his small boat which was lost in his third attempt. Finally a beach restaurant for an excellent lunch. In the evening all went off to dinner at the homes of various Rotarians. On Saturday morning there was a visit to Amsterdam by coach to visit the Scheepvaart Museum (National Maritime Museum) which was recently re-opened after renovation. An evening visit to the “Stoof ” (stew) restaurant followed, with six varieties of excellent stew to keep all well fed and also greatly amused - a superb climax to a great visit. On Sunday the motorists departed to a variety of destinations, ultimately Seaford, while the aviators set off to Schiphol Airport and onwards to Gatwick and home. Pity about the 4-hour delay …

Tavern in the Tent and Seaford Family Funday It started the day before, where members of both Seaford Rotary Clubs met at the Trek Club to load up the van with two marquees, the bar (in kit form), two fridges, a generator, tables and chairs, banners and

44

signage, barrels of beer and cider, hundreds of bottles of drink of various types and other bits and pieces that are needed to complete our Tavern in the Tent. Then, the following morning, on what was a hot and sunny day, both clubs met at the Downs Leisure Centre to set up Tavern in the Tent for the Seaford Family Fun Day. Three hours later, after a lot of hard work, we were open for business to provide liquid refreshment for all visitors and stall-holders. There was a steady stream of customers throughout the day. The money raised will, as usual, be split between the two Rotary Clubs, and will be used to support charities and good causes. Many thanks to members of both Clubs who helped to make the day a success, and to all the visitors to the Tavern for their continued support.

Boot, Craft and Produce Fair, 14th July The glorious summer weather attracted around 50 stall holders and large numbers of the public to the Rotary Club of Seaford’s July Boot, Craft and Produce Fair. This was the best turn out so far this year, which raised over £540 for the Club. Many of the stall holders remarked they had achieved good sales, and would be back next month. A number of people said they missed the “Music Man’s” cheery voice and hoped he would return for future Fairs. It was great to see good levels of sales from the food and ice-cream vendors, and many of the children came away with some remarkable face paintings. We even provided bowls of water for the dogs. Our thanks go out to the stall holders, the general public for their generosity and to all Rotary Club members who worked in hot conditions to help make this event a success. The next Fair is on Sunday 8th September, Martello Fields Seaford, 9am to 1pm with free entry and parking for the public. Gates open for stallholders at 7.30am, pitch fee £8. RETURN OF A PAINTED LADY Having spent the winter in Sheffield and Dartmouth getting a makeover, one of Seaford Museum’s painted ladies has returned to take pride of place on display in the Museum. “She may be a painted lady who’s seen a bit of the world in her time, but we love her!” commented David Swaysland from Seaford Museum, on the news that “Phoebe”, the second of the Museum’s ships figureheads, was coming back to Seaford in time for the summer. In December 2012, Phoebe was hoisted out of the depths of the Museum’s extensive underground exhibition area to be taken off to the workshops in Sheffield of Richard Hunter, the UK’s leading figurehead restorer (www.figureheads.co.uk). She has been expertly cleaned, some areas have been re-carved and she’s been re-painted by Richard, based on the few flecks of paint which remained embedded in the grain of her wood, and his expert knowledge (see before and after photos, right).

S. J. HampTon

Sadly, the Museum is still largely ignorant of her history before the 1960s when she was rescued from Seaford Urban District Council’s Destructor site in Brooklyn Road by Mrs Doris Pilkington and her daughter, to spend many years at Litlington Tea Gardens before being moved to Seaford Museum in 1974. Even her adopted name of “Phoebe” was given to her by the Pilkington family as she had no other known name. Rumour has it that she was for a time in the garden of a house on Seaford seafront and moved to council care around the time of the 1939-45 war, along with the Museum’s more famous figurehead, which came from “The Peruvian”. However, very extensive research by local author Diana Crook, who has helped to finance Phoebe’s restoration, has not produced any leads as to her identity. “Her size, she stands 7 feet tall, suggests she came from a large ‘distant shores’ vessel, perhaps a three-masted barque, and Richard Hunter believes she is of British rather than Scandinavian, European or American origins, but that has to remain speculation. Unfortunately, there have been so many shipwrecks along our coast, and there was a thriving Victorian trade in redundant ships’ figureheads as garden curiosities, that she remains an enigma” said Diana Crook. Return of Painted Lady – Phoebe can be viewed by visitors to Seaford Museum, which is based at Martello Tower 74 on Seaford seafront, along with “The Peruvian” figurehead and all the other exhibits at the Museum. “Of course if anyone is able to shed any further light on our painted lady’s past, we’d be delighted to hear from them”, added Diana. Photos: Phoebe before restoration (top) and after (bottom).

MorrISonS ManaGer’S walK raISeS HundredS for cHarItY

Customers and staff at the Seaford and Crowborough branches of Morrisons supermarket rallied together to support Deputy Manager Ian Brierley who has been walking the 100 mile South Down’s Way from Winchester to Eastbourne in the name of charity. Ian chose to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Stroke Association, both of which are close to his heart, he said: “When my father had a stroke whilst undergoing radiotherapy treatment for cancer, he received excellent care from Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses at home. Last year my brother-in-law also suffered a stroke at the age of 44. I decided then to make the time to fulfil childhood ambition to walk the South Downs Way in one trip”. Taking on the challenge between 7th-12th July meant Ian spent a lot of time walking during some of the hottest days of the year so far. Spurred on by the beautiful scenery and support from people he passed along the way he successfully completed the challenge and raised over £2,600 of which £1,364 went to Marie Curie Cancer Care. Donations from Ian’s friends, colleagues, customers and a Blooming Great Tea Party at Ian’s Mum Margaret’s home all contributed to the fantastic total. Marie Curie Cancer Care fundraiser Charlotte GoughCooper said “We are always so grateful when someone decides to raise money to support the Marie Curie Nurses. By wearing a Marie Curie T-shirt on his walk Ian has not only raised money but also awareness of the charity which will help raise our profile in the community. The money Ian has raised will help us reach more patients and support more families during their time of need.” L-R: Charlotte Gough-Cooper from Marie Curie Cancer Care and Ian Brierley Deputy Mgr, Tim Jeffery Store Manager, and Lee Southerden Assistant Mgr.

For richer, for poorer, let’s get it in writing we take out life insurance as a sensible step in case the worst happens; we wouldn’t dream of driving a car without insurance and we certainly wouldn’t go skiing without travel insurance. in fact everything we do in life is tied up in contracts and disclaimers. So why don’t us brits think the same way about marriage?

in much of europe and the US, Prenuptial Agreements have become the norm - proving that they are not just for the rich and famous. However, in England and Wales we seem to be far more reserved often dismissing the idea out of hand as “unromantic and pessimistic”.

However unromantic it may seem, Prenuptial Agreements are about both parties feeling secure in their relationship. They give couples the power to make financial arrangements between themselves and provide security and protection in the event that their union fails. In my experience couples who enter the agreements view their relationship in quite the opposite way.

what is a Pre-nup?

• • • •

You have children from a previous relationship and wish them to inherit rather than your spouse You have significant assets such as properties, investments, jewellery, antiques etc You are getting married for a second time You have a significantly higher income than your partner

are they legal? Following a landmark decision in the Supreme Court, in effect, Pre-Nups are now binding unless they are considered by the court to be unfair. A list of factors have to be looked at by the court when considering the weight to be placed upon any pre-nuptial agreement in the event of a divorce such as whether any pressure was exerted upon the other to enter into the agreement amongst other things.

How do i go about getting one? A Pre-Nup is a bespoke document and should always be drafted by an experienced family lawyer. It is therefore vital to seek legal advice from a Resolution Lawyer (www.resolution.org). Options such as Mediation and Collaborative Law can assist greatly in discussing the issues and reaching an agreement.

Nettie’s father, Tom Glandfield, said before the event: “If anyone is feeling particularly generous, our sevenyear-old daughter Nettie is shortly going to try to swim a mile (64 lengths) in her local pool to raise some money for charity. The charity she has chosen is one close to our hearts - the Seaford Downs Syndrome & Special Needs Support Group (SDSSNSG). They are a very small, local charity, entirely dependent on voluntary donations, and have been extremely supportive of Nettie’s brother, Pip, assisting with speech therapy, activity sessions and music groups.” Nettie managed to complete her one-mile swim in just a shade under 1 hour 15 minutes, cheered on by friends, family and members of the Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group (SDSSNSG) at Seahaven Pool. The event was entirely Nettie’s own initiative. If you would like to make a donation to the Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group (SDSSNSG), please visit the website: www.seaforddssnsg.co.uk Pictured with Nettie is Pip, her four-year-old brother, who was recently diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum and has benefited massively from the help of SDSSNSG. Amongst other things, the charity provides subsidised speech therapy, swimming classes, music groups, drumming circles and family drop-in days for children with special needs and their families in and around Seaford.

Seaford afternoon flower club At our June meeting “Flowers in Art” we enjoyed a theatrical outing courtesy of “Curtain Up” by Angela Merryfield. The music and floral arrangements took us to Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Rigoletto and other musical extravaganza. On 18th of July we were privileged to entertain the Sussex Area Vice Chairman and many other visitors. At our fund-raising event Kay Blackburn, ably assisted by her husband Keith, gave an entertaining and informative talk on “Flowers in Art” (the projector was Keith’s expertise). Thanks must go to the very hardworking Committee, the members and friends who helped by laying the tables, serving the cream teas, washing up, manning the plant stall, making and selling delicious cakes, selling tickets for the tombola and raffle. We are grateful for June’s beautiful window hangings and Georgie’s containers, all contributing to a total profit of £200 for our Charity Fund. Without teamwork clubs could not survive. Our Secretary Mary McGhee arranged on behalf of our club a spectacular depiction of “Spellbound” in an interclub competition on 1st August and won! Well done Mary! By invitation Seaford Afternoon Flower Club is allowed to organize a 6-class competition at the Seaford and District Horticultural Summer Show, and we hope for more success. On August 15th our President Georgie Wall is giving us a fun workshop entitled “Ways with Willow!” and our meeting on 20th September will be with Gill Sadler demonstrating “Showstoppers”. Visitors are always welcome - telephone me, Tina Bacon on 873162 for further details.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH ADDICTION You may choose to call it a craving, a fancy, a bit of a dependence but the truth is that anyone who becomes overly drawn to or obsessed by any activity – whether drinking alcohol, taking drugs, over- or undereating, shopping, gambling, sex or even doing good deeds – is trying to fill a void or block out something that is missing in their lives. (Even smoking may start for that reason.) That’s why the human givens approach, which focuses on helping people in distress find healthy ways to meet their emotional needs, is such a successful method for overcoming addictions. We know, from research, that people who feel fulfilled in their lives do not need (or stop needing) to indulge in addictive activities. In one famous experiment, rats were offered either morphine-laced water or ordinary water. When rats were kept alone in small cages, they tended to opt for the morphine, but when they were kept in groups in areas similar to their natural habitats, they preferred to drink the water. When the rats in the natural habitat were then put singly into cages, they started choosing the morphine-laced water, while the rats originally in the cages stopped choosing the morphine when put into natural-style habitats. This showed clearly that, when needs were met, rats did not want drugs. The same effect is found in humans. Most young people give up drug experimentation when they start careers and families. People are much more likely to get caught up in addiction when important needs cease to be met, perhaps because of loss, caused by the death of someone close, a relationship ending, redundancy or illness, or by dissatisfaction arising from boredom or feeling trapped. Sometimes such circumstances lead first to depression and then to addiction. It is now known that all addictive behaviours work through the same common pathway in the brain – the expectation pathway. We “expect” the addictive behaviour to make us feel better, as we recall pleasurable memories associated with the addictive activity, rather than remembering all the downsides

associated with the activity. So, when human givens practitioners help someone to overcome an addictive activity, they focus first on helping people knock out the expectations of pleasure that addiction falsely feeds us. If you have ever tried to stop an activity you are rather overpartial to, you may recall that, when you first decide not to have that drink or that cigarette or switch on the shopping channel, you don’t feel any great discomfort. It is as time goes on that the craving grows, often until it is irresistible. How this works in the brain and how Human Givens practitioners can help will be explored in next month’s article. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

THE FRIENDS OF TIDE MILLS At the Friends of Tide Mills meeting in July, 15 of us managed to collect just 8 sacks of rubbish - this illustrates how clear the area is at present and of course may it long continue! Over the last few meetings we have started to see a general reduction in litter, which is testament to everybody who helps ensure this beautiful area remains so brilliant. Of course we will not be complacent, and if we ever get to the point that very little litter is on the ground, we will undoubtedly find other issues to deal with, one of which is the seasonal problem of illegal camping - this we are taking up with NPP, the land owners, and the South Downs National Park. We can never have enough members and are always very happy to welcome as many more as possible. If like us you appreciate just what a beautiful and special place Tide Mills is, please do join us. Our next meeting is Sunday the 15th of September. We meet from 10am until 12 noon, but any time you can spare is much appreciated. SEAFORD KURLERS Hi everyone. What a lovely spell of beautiful sunshine we have had. Let’s hope it lasts and gives us a good autumn. Seaford Kurlers were at Seaford Fun Day at the Downs Leisure Centre on Sunday 21st July, 2013, on an extremely hot day. The event was well attended and everyone had lots of fun. Many people came to see us to find out about New Age Kurling and the children seemed quite keen. A couple suggested they would like to see it brought into schools - it is a sport that children of all ages and abilities can play on equal terms. If you are looking to take up a sport, you might give New Age Kurling a try. Our club has quite a good social side to it as well as the active sport aspect. You will be able to meet new people and make new friends. Once a year we have an in-house tournament. This means that if you wish to be a bit more competitive then this is for you. Those of you that regularly read the Seaford Scene, will probably know that we have trips to the theatre and have recently been to see the new Mary Rose exhibition. We are affiliated to ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) and are able to cater for people who have a disability. On our trips out we are able to hire the ESDA coaches, which are fully fitted to assist our less able members. We meet at the Downs Leisure Centre every Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm, with a coffee break half way. There is an annual membership fee of £5 and the weekly afternoon is £2.50. Why don’t you come and give it a try? Turn up, and your first session is free. Join up and join in. Have fun!

Running Commentary... Running with others even occasionally can have a beneficial effect on your running. This is usually due to trying to keep up with someone or just chatting away and not realising that your pace has increased. Running is a personal journey. It’s your leg strength, your lungs and your motivation yet the camaraderie amongst runners makes it feel simultaneously like an individual and a team sport. Running with others can also be safer, especially with the darker evenings affecting us all for the next seven months. With that in mind, the Seaford Striders would be happy to invite runners in Seaford to join them on a Monday and/or Wednesday at 7pm at the Downs Leisure Centre. As mentioned in the August Seaford Scene, our guest contributor this month is John Kingshott. He writes… “Athletes are a very superstitious lot, and runners are no exception. Certain things we do as part of our pre-race preparation can become an important personal ritual, and over time we begin to believe that these rituals are necessary for us to run well. I have been running for a number of years and although I’m not that superstitious (touch wood) I always put my right running shoe on before my left. I realised this when I started talking with other runners about rituals and routines. One runner said that they only use gold safety pins to pin their race number on, instead of the silver ones supplied at the race meetings. Another runner prefers the number 13 or a number that adds up to 13, like no 67 (6 + 7 = 13). Some runners may set a PB with a certain pair of socks and then refuse to wear any other type in future races. Then there are runners who prefer to tie their laces in a particular way, or wear only particular brand-named clothing. Also, some of our top athletes have odd rituals that they go through before an event. Paula Radcliffe, for instance, has an ice bath before an event and uses gold pins for her number. Dame Kelly Holmes lays her kit out in a particular way before a race, while Sally Gunnell keeps a bag of lucky stones in her kit bag and a lucky Chinese 7 in her running spikes bag. The mind is very powerful, and if you program it, you can move mountains. Last year I ran the Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon, and 2 miles before the finish, I contracted a stress fracture in my heel. Common sense told me to stop but my mind said no! Cross the finishing line and get your hard-earned medal… and then stop. After all, I’d put my right shoe on first, so I was meant to finish, and not only that but finish faster… and I did. So, if you see someone running with odd socks, weird laces or doing something that you deem to be not the norm, it could be their way of rising to a challenge.”

John has touched on an interesting aspect of our running and one that has made me look at my own quirky habits. However, wearing my comfiest socks and shorts for a race is, I’m sure, common sense rather than a ritual, while having a cup of tea before and after a race (especially a marathon) is probably more to do with the calming effect of the drink than any mind programming. Whatever special preparation you do and however, it came into your consciousness, if it works… it works… so do it! Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

New President Jean Vine and husband, Ron, originally went to Canada in 1957 and returned in 1965 with their two-year-old son. They had lived in various places around Vancouver City. Jean joined the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford and later became President in 1978-9. She remained in the UK until 1981 and initially retained her membership for a supposed absence of two years, which actually turned out to be 32 years!

From 1981 they were located south of Vancouver in a small town called Tsawwassen (apparently the Indian word for “land of sun”); however, Jean kept up her keen interest in the club by regular return visits. To compensate for the absence of Inner Wheel close by in Canada, Jean became interested in golf, which she is continuing in Seaford.

Now Jean and Ron are back in the UK and she is playing an even more active part in the Club. As Jean says “My second term as President has just started and I look forward to a happy time with all the members with whom I have become so well acquainted over the years. My charity is Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs, something very close to my heart.” In August Jean and her fellow members organised a stall at the Martello Fun Day. She was delighted with the support given by the public; the money raised has been earmarked for her chosen charity. So far Jean has overseen the club’s involvement in Seaford Fun Day to raise funds for the local charity Waves. MAD MUSIC HALL OF FUN 3

On Sunday 21st July, we celebrated the the first anniversary of this Lunch Club that was named after Joyce Campbell who founded the original Lunch Club about twenty years ago. Joyce was a great lady with a great idea. Before she died both she and her family gave full support to Steve, me and the other volunteers to carry on this service for the elderly of Seaford. So here we are, one year on. In that time Steve has served 526 meals (times that number by all the crockery, glasses, cutlery etc etc) and there has been a great deal of washing up! I and everyone who have attended the lunches over the year would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work in making these lunches run so smoothly. I would also like to mention the Lions Club for providing us with a mini bus and a driver (Dirk) each month and the volunteer car drivers – we could not manage without them. An enjoyable celebratory meal was had by all, despite the heat - it was a very hot day! Steve particularly hoped that the strawberries went down well – he had hulled seven kilos of them – a mammoth task! Madeline West (Organiser)

FUNDRAISING FOR CHARITY Lunch at Trawlers, Church Street Wednesday 4th September. at 12.15pm. Fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, tea/coffee, £6.95. Donations and raffle prizes welcome. SEAFORD LITTLE THEATRE

PACK OF LIES by HUGH WHITEMORE

This thriller (a 1983 play by English writer Hugh Whitemore), set in the winter of 1960-61 in Ruislip, is inspired by actual Cold War events, though it is the bland ordinariness of suburban London which is a counterpoint to the high drama of an international spy ring. The plot centres on Bob and Barbara Jackson and their neighbours, Peter and Helen Kroger, who seem a convivial Canadian couple. Then Mr. Stewart, a mysterious stranger arrives, describing himself as a ‘civil servant’. He politely coerces the Jacksons into allowing their house to be used as a surveillance post. In the nightmare months that follow, the Jacksons’ comfortable life is shattered as the truth about their much-loved friends is gradually revealed to them. Tricia Pape gave a believable and sympathetic reading of Barbara, conveying her bewilderment as, helpless in an alien world of deception and treachery, she is faced with the agonizing realization that the Krogers have betrayed her and she, in turn, has betrayed the Krogers. Alan Lade as her husband, a decent, middleof-the-road sort of chap, showed in his understated performance the anxiety to do the right thing by the authorities and the increasing tension as he dealt with his distraught wife. And it was not only his wife...Kim Payne, as the Jacksons’ daughter Julie, was terrific, ranging from stroppy teenager who just longed to ride on Malcolm’s motor-bike, to quietly vulnerable as she learns of ‘Auntie’ Helen’s double-life, then stridently incredulous as she rose to a crescendo on ‘How could she?’

The Krogers were somewhat less credible. David Parton was solidly bland as Peter, the antiquarian book-seller, his best moment his story of his journey from Morris Cohen, New York Jewish Communist to Cold War spy. Sandra Haynes as his wife, required to be warmly suburban and brightly friendly, was certainly that, but there was little in her performance to suggest a double agent. Perhaps that was why she, and Peter, got away with it for so long - until the couple were arrested and charged with espionage in 1961. The core of the drama was Roland Boorman’s superbly urbane, low-key but totally believable MI5 man. He was just right, conveying beneath the facade of a friendly family doctor the totally focussed spook – persuasive, firm, yet totally polite. The two female agents, foisted on the Jacksons for weeks on end, were Lindsey Holledge’s perky sarf London Thelma and Josie Hobbs’ quieter Sally. A thoroughly good evening – Ian Clegg directed this intriguing slice of Cold War reality with subtlety and aplomb – and once again, Alan Lade’s set design was ingenuity itself. Derek Watts

east Blatchington lectures

Design & Build

Rarely in recent years has so much interest been shown in historic discoveries as that shown in the recent discovery and removal of a collection of bones found beneath a Leicester car park, which, after extensive and stringent tests, including DNA, have been positively identified as those of King Richard III.

info@cregganconstruction.co.uk www.cregganconstruction.co.uk

This discovery prompted Shirley, who normally arranges these lectures, and has been a member of the Richard III Society for over 50 years, to throw some light on the wheelings and dealings which took place in the late 15th century, and something of the hard work and vigilant research carried out by the Society and its members in an effort to clear his name of all the evil acts he is supposed to have committed before and during his short reign. This has resulted in the recent remarkable recovery, and it has now been agreed that a tomb can be placed in Leicester Cathedral in his honour, the funding for this will be made by the Society and its members.

Creggan Builders of Seaford

The interest shown and the numbers asking to attend this lecture, meant that it had to be transferred to the extra spaciousness of the Parish Church, where it was enthusiastically received. Thanks are due to all who spent such an enjoyable afternoon with us, and particularly to Newberry Tully Estate Agents in Church Street, Seaford, for their help with the sale of tickets, not forgetting the loyal band of helpers who backed the meeting with stewarding and refreshments. Well done all!

Sea beans and ivory nuts are intriguing, beautiful and even - some people believe - lucky objects. Hamburger beans and sea peas are fellow travellers. Generations of beachcombers have occasionally seen them and wondered about them but few have grown one.

To reach the Sussex coast, these seeds - also called drift seeds - have travelled a long way from the Americas. Locals Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski have both gathered and found information about drift seeds from our local beaches which will be of interest to all sea-side visitors, whether holiday makers or beach cleaners. Seabeans and Ivory Nuts is available at Seaford Museum, price £1.50.

FRIENDS OF SEAFORD LIBRARY: A “little” book reading at the theatre The Friends of Seaford Library are to hold a celebration of books and reading at Seaford Little Theatre on Thursday 12th September. The event will start at 10.30am and will finish by 1pm with an interval during which tea and coffee will be available. Everyone is invited to come along. FOSL members and some contributors from the theatre will join together to give an entertaining series of short readings, each one introduced by its reader. The theatre is the perfect venue for this amalgamation of reading and performing! We are looking forward to a really enjoyable morning and hope to see lots of you there. Interval refreshments will be included in the entrance fee of £2. With the new library well on the way to completion, the Friends are in buoyant mood. Some of you will have seen their table at the Martello Fund Day on 4th August, where a good time was had by all in the sunshine. Now we look forward to welcoming you to the Little Book Reading on 12th September. See you there!

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT Dinah Synge 1900-1974

ARkWELL SERVIcES l

Few can have done more for Seaford than Dinah Synge. She was a teacher at the Downs School (where she had attended as a pupil). She was divisional superintendent of the St John Ambulance and during the war ran the Seaford First Aid Post which provided valuable assistance during the many air-raids. She was the chairman of the governors of Seaford Head School, the president of the Seaford British Legion, secretary to the Conservative Association, United Nations Association and the Horticultural Society. She was on the church parochial council and even found time to design the Seaford coat-of-arms! In 1949 she was elected as the first female chairman of Seaford Council. She is buried at Seaford Cemetery but there is a memorial brass to her at St Leonard’s Church. By Kevin Gordon Seaford Museum Summer Opening: Sundays and Bank Holidays, 11am to 4pm. BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD & SURROUNDING AREA with Bob Eade September By the time September has arrived all of the 40 butterflies that are found within 15 miles of Seaford would have appeared by now. The only possible exceptions to this would be the 2 migratory butterflies; these are the Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow. Both of these butterflies rely on adults flying across the Channel. It seems remarkable that such dainty creatures such as butterflies are able to fly such a long distance but some years, thousands can migrate over - although some years the opposite happens and very few are seen. The Painted Lady is the most regular of these 2 species, with the first adults sometimes arriving in the late Spring; the offspring of these are then seen later in the year along with more butterflies migrating over. Occasionally there is a Painted Lady mass influx with thousands migrating over the Channel and spreading all over the country. The Painted Lady is a large attractive butterfly that is able to fly in cooler conditions than many other butterflies. They also often fly late in the evening along the footpaths of the Downs. Painted Lady are also often found in gardens, where they are regularly seen nectaring on buddleia alongside Small Tortoiseshells and Red Admirals. Clouded Yellows are rarely seen in large numbers and many years only a small number migrate over. Clouded Yellow and Brimstone are the only yellow butterflies in Britain but there shouldn’t be confusion as the Clouded

Central Heating Installations Boiler Breakdowns/Servicing Landlord Certificates No Call Out Charge No Job too Big or Small Free Estimates

Yellow is a much darker yellow than the light lemon yellow of the Brimstone. This strong flying species occasionally stops to nectar on tall flowers, always settling with their wings closed. It is always very rewarding to see this species. Both Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow are seen most frequently on the Downland near the sea with the area around Beachy Head being particularly good. Of the 38 resident butterflies in the area, many have more than one brood so species such as Small Copper, Brown Argus, Small Heath and Adonis Blue can be seen both in the Spring and again in the Autumn. Small Copper in fact can be much more numerous and easier to see in September with rival males battling over territories. Both the Small Copper and Adonis Blue add welcome colour to the late summer and early autumn downland slopes with their spectacular wings. The Small Heath is a small light brown butterfly that is often seen over the Downs settling on footpaths and when disturbed flying a short distance before settling again with their wings closed only to fly on again when they approached again. Meadow Brown continues to fly in large numbers in the hedgerows and longer grasses of the Downs, making it the most frequently seen butterfly. Even at this time of year there will be some new emergences but many of the Meadow Brown will have been flying for some time and will now be looking pretty worn. Members of the White family, the 2 butterflies commonly known as the ‘cabbage whites’, the Large White and Small White, as well as the Green Veined White, are all seen in good numbers around September time as well. For more information on how you can help our local butterflies visit www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk Clockwise from left: Painted Lady, underside, Clouded Yellow, Adonis Blue (male), Painted Lady.
