ENGLAND’S NATIONAL DAY ST GEORGE’S DAY 23rd APRIL A most important day in the English calendar is St George’s Day, 23rd April. It is important to The Royal Society of St George and to everyone in England. This is the day we celebrate the martyrdom of a famous Roman Soldier, George, who gave his life rather than renounce his Christian beliefs in the year 303AD. A successful Roman Soldier, he joined the cavalry at the age of 17 and rose to the rank of Millenary or Tribunus Militum, a rank roughly the same as a Colonel in today’s Army. So the pictures we see of him dressed as a medieval knight in shining armour on a white horse are historically incorrect. How about the myth of him slaying a dragon? Well perhaps the nearest to the mythical dragon might be a mighty Nile Crocodile. It is thought, however, that the image created by the story really signifies the struggle of right over wrong – George being right and the dragon perhaps representing the evil Roman Emperor,

Diocletian. When George refused to bow down to the Emperor as a god, he knew he would be arrested. He freed his slaves, sold his property and gave all away to the needy, and presented himself to the Emperor. He was tortured on the equivalent day of 23rd April in 303AD and, because he would not deny his faith, was beheaded near Lydda in Palestine. The Roman Catholic Church created him as a Saint and he was recognised as such by the Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches. He became the Patron Saint of England almost by default, having been adopted by the Army in the eleventh century. Richard the Lionheart put the army under his protection the following century when campaigning in the Holy Land. At the end of the 14th century he had effectively replaced St Edward the Confessor as our country’s Patron Saint. His day is therefore the one to celebrate all that is English, our history, our people, our land, our nation! We can do this in many ways. Let us at least see the English flag, the Cross of St George flown and displayed in as many places as possible. Let our Schools tell their students about him and his day, let us all wear the English rose and his badge with pride. The Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George, one of whose aims is to ensure that the day is properly celebrated, is holding its annual Church Service at 6pm on Wednesday 23rd April at St Andrew’s Church in Alfriston followed by a formal dinner in the nearby Deans Place Hotel. Any organisation wishing to consider ways to celebrate England’s National Day should contact the Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, on 01323 899985 or email 514928@talktalk.net to discuss possibilities. Visits to Schools or Meetings by a member of the branch can be arranged. The area of interest to the Seahaven Branch is the District of Lewes with surrounding towns and villages. SEAHAVEN STOREHOUSE IS CHOSEN CHARITY Seahaven Storehouse has been chosen as the designated charity for the year by a department of Southdown Housing Association. Southdown’s Learning Disabilities Department, based at Harison Road in Seaford, has named the Storehouse as the charity they want to support for the year 2013/2014. The charity has already benefitted on two occasions from fund raising by the tenants of the Association, who have been holding table-top sales and raffle evenings to raise money to buy supplies for the Storehouse. It was a lovely surprise recently when Southdown tenant Michael Beresford, together with support worker Sandra Bray, both arrived at Seaford Community Church, home of the Storehouse, bearing essential foodstuffs. And somehow Michael, together with his friend Jimmy Nicholls, had managed to buy just the right items to be added to the food parcels the Storehouse is sending out on a regular basis. Dawn Woodgate and the team at the Storehouse are always very grateful for such contributions, as the need persists for both individuals and families to receive food parcels weekly. If you would like to contribute, please either place your donated food items in the bin at Morrisons, or bring to Kingswell, 115 Vale Road, Seaford, on a Thursday between 10am and 1pm; or contact Dawn on 07921 844930 or e-mail seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com to find out which items are most needed. Seaford Food Swap

Enjoy baking, preserving, brewing or growing your own fruit and veg? Want to swap homemade chutney for eggs or onions for cakes? Bring your produce to Seaford Food Swap and take home delicious fare lovingly made by others. No money changes hands, produce is the only currency. Food swap events started a few years ago in Brooklyn, New York and are relatively new to Britain. Food swaps encourage communities to exchange home grown, homemade, home brewed or foraged items with each other. Apart from diversifying the swappers’ larders and redistributing surplus food or gluts, food swaps provide the opportunity to build stronger communities. They are really social events and attract a mix of people of all ages, genders and occupations.

The event lasts for about two hours. So, on a cold but sunny day in January, keen food swappers arrived at Old Boot Inn carrying various items, ready for the first ever

Seaford Food Swap. Attendees displayed their goods and wrote a brief description on their ‘swap’ cards. Participants then moved around to see what others had brought. The sampling table was a hub of chatter – recipes, tips and ideas being discussed and shared. If you were interested in swapping with someone you wrote down a ‘Bid’ on their card. The fun part was finalising swaps. Popular items received many bids and attendees negotiated the best offer. With everyone happy and in possession of a variety of goodies, the event came to a close. Would you like to be part of our next event? Our second swap will take place on Saturday 26th April at Old Boot Inn, 16 South Street, Seaford, BN25 1HP, 10am-12 noon.

Places are limited to a maximum of 25 participants. There is no entry fee, we just need you to book your place on seafordfoodswap.eventbrite.co.uk. See our webpage seafordfoodswap.blogspot.com or join our facebook page for the latest updates at www.facebook.com/groups/SeafordFoodSwap. Organisers Adele on 01323 492995 or Di on 01323 897897.

The walk is on Sunday 4th May 2014 and will be a circular route starting from the Martello Fields in Seaford, going along the Promenade before sweeping through the old village of Bishopstone and up onto the South Downs Way. Walkers will then descend into Alfriston, following the Cuckmere river to Exceat, before climbing Seaford Head and returning back to the start point, a total of thirteen and a half miles. Marshals will be on hand to direct walkers around the route and the Club’s Tavern in The Tent will be on hand to offer refreshments and food at both the start and finish of the walk. New Awards For Young People in Seaford and Alfriston The Martello Rotary Club of Seaford is delighted to be launching the ‘Seaford Youth Sports Awards’ to reward our young people for their sporting achievements, which can sometimes go unnoticed or unheralded. Young people can sometimes be given a bad press, however we recognise that there are a vast majority in our community who work very hard, with incredible dedication, and achieve amazing results in all areas including sport. We are hoping to highlight these wonderful youngsters in our award ceremony in November 2014. You can help with this by nominating any young people who have been extremely successful in sport this year. There are 5 categories which are for individuals or teams who have made major contributions to their sport. These include awards for volunteers, teams, commitment, most improved and of course the young sportsperson of the year. Nominees must live, attend a school or represent a club in Seaford or Alfriston and must be aged 16 years and under on the 31st August 2014.

Seaford Times The Seaford Times website has been in existence for a year now, but the project has been going on for decades. Seaford Times has a database of thousands of Seafordians from old photographs that have been accumulated over many years. Seaford sports teams, school photographs, pub and club outings, weddings and family portraits are just some of the photographs that have been collected. Now is the time to name the Seafordians in the photographs. It is very hard to get names from the older pictures, because most of the people in them are no longer with us, but this is where the website has been so useful. People have seen their grand parents, and other relations, and written in to inform Seaford Times of their names. On the website and the Seaford Times Facebook site, there are pictures of school teachers from the past, and these photos have caused a great deal of interest, and many comments. Other pages of great interest are the Schools pages. Seaford Secondary, Seaford Primary and Chyngton Primary School.

S. J. Hampton

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War, 1914 – 1918, Seaford Times is displaying the wonderful photograph of the Seaford Branch of the ‘Comrades of the Great War’. This photograph has over 100 Seaford men who came back home after the hostilities ceased. This postcard sized photograph has been enlarged to enable you to see all these men clearly, in the hope that you may recognise your grand father, or great grand father. This is an historic photograph and is of great importance to the history of our town. It is for that reason that we want to have as many of these Seaford men named as possible. We do have 64 names listed for this photograph, thanks to the late Mr. Walter Pettitt, but we are not sure to whom all the names belong. If your Seaford family name is in the list, please dig out your old family photos to see if there is a match with anyone in this photograph of 1918. All the men have been numbered to make it easier for you to name anyone you know. This is a huge project, and will take a very long time to complete, if in deed it ever does get completed. These Seaford men should all be remembered, and we should all know who they are.

You can view Seaford Times website at www.seafordtimes.com, and contact them at editor@seafordtimes.com

Seaford Times is looking for the Christian names of these Seaford Town footballers of 1935–36 season. Can anyone help?

3 Hopefully the weather should start to warm up nicely. If this is so then start removing protective fleece off tender plants in the greenhouse. Dispose of any plants that have not survived. 3 Watch out for frog- spawn in the ponds. 3 Towards the end of the month plant out chitted potatoes. Sow carrots, lettuce, courgettes (under cover), and spring unions. Plant out union sets. 3 Transplant autumn sown sweet peas into their main beds. 3 Beware of overnight frosts. Cover or protect plants accordingly.

Unfortunately it is unlikely that these plants would be hardy enough to grow outdoors in the UK. If you have a warm south facing wall on your house you might be lucky but I don’t think that tomatoes will replace our traditional wisteria! Mike Parker ic o op f

harvested. At best one of these grafted plants can produce up to a hundred trusses of tomatoes. The result in a few years time should be cheaper tomatoes.

ome time ago I wrote about news from the scientific community regarding genetically modified vegetables; well they are still at it! It now appears that they are targeting tomatoes. Again Thailand is taking the lead in modifying the traditional commercial tomato plant. The idea is that sunflower seeds are first impregnated with Lycopene. This is the substance that helps give the tomato plant its colour. The seeds are then partially grown into sunflowers. These are then harvested, the tops removed and the remaining twelve inches of stalk including roots are used as a grafting root-stock. Freshly grown traditional tomato plants are then grafted onto the sunflower base. Because of the impregnated Lycopene the graft will be accepted by the rootstock and will grow on to maturity. The end result will be a tomato plant that grows up to fifteen feet in height but only in warm Mediterranean conditions. Prof. Avril Dip Phool ScBA of the Thai Institute of Genetic Science has developed these plants for the commercial growing of tomatoes. They are grown on fifteen-foot high ropes similar to how we grow hops in Kent. At the end of the season the ropes are cut down and all the tomatoes are to d

RUDBECKIA

(Cone Flower – Asterceae) Now is the time to make plans to cheer up the garden in late summer with the warm colours and autumn tints of Rudbeckia. These beautiful flowers are great in boarders and flowerbeds. They make great cut flowers and attract butterflies. They can be grown from seed as annuals or bought from garden centres as perennials. They come in a range of yellows, reds and oranges. They can grow tall for the back of the boarder or as a dwarf plant for the front. For annuals check the wide variety of seed packets from garden centres. Sow now in a good garden compost with a covering of vermiculite on top to aid germination. Transplant when large enough to grow on, in individual pots until large enough to transplant outdoors. Perennial types can be obtained from small plug plants to large one-litre pots ready to plant out. Perennial Rudbeckias are usually quite hardy and survive the winter underground producing fresh shoots each spring. Annuals will flower from mid summer to autumn with their large cone shaped flowers. Recommended annuals are Cappuccino (16 inches) colour shades of rusty gold with dark centres and Prairie Sun (24-36 inches) bright yellow flowers with green centres. Popular perennial types are Goldstrum (24 inches) a profusion of yellow flowers and Cherry Brandy (24 inches) a rich cherry red flower which is excellent as a cut flower. There really is such a wide range of Rudbeckias to choose from.

Seaford Gardening Club Hopefully our weather will now settle down and we can enjoy longer days with the clocks having gone forward on 30 March! It will be good to venture into the garden to tidy flower beds ready to plant new additions for spring and summer. There is nothing more relaxing than pottering in a greenhouse or shed and transferring plants into their flowering positions. Our speaker for February, Peter Hill, gave a very in depth and interesting talk on the life of a pharmacist – ‘Pills, Potions and Patience’. Early on in his school life he decided he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a pharmacist too. After leaving grammar school he went to college to learn the trade. His father was an astute business man, one of the family shops was in West Street, Brighton, where he gained much business from day trippers who bought sun cream, films for cameras and other requirements for a day on the beach, but also on their way home, sunburn remedies or tablets for upset stomachs! The shop was allowed to open 26 Sundays a year as well as the normal Monday to Saturday trading. When the summer shows were on at

the Hippodrome, his father also had actors visiting the shop to top up their stage make up. Pharmacy was hard work in the early days as all remedies were made up on site by creating the correct concoctions for the ailment. A customer would come in and explain their symptoms, wait for medicine to be made up and then be given advice on its administration. They always left feeling much more relaxed and confident that they had the right medicine. Preparing medications nowadays is a technical process and there is much wastage – six million drugs were wasted last year alone as patients stopped using them when they read the possible side effects! Peter kept us amused for over an hour with jokes and stories; he also rekindled our memories with coloured bottles, jars and boxes that were used years ago for all kinds of preparations. He concluded with a slide of Mr Beecham who created the pill to cure all ills! I am sure we all remember charcoal tablets for...flatulence, milk of magnesia for tummy upsets and camphor necklaces for colds – to mention a few! Peter’s final words were “laughter is the best medicine” and he certainly created a lot of that during the evening! Our next talk will be on Wednesday 30 April when Ian Gledhill will talk on ‘Volk’s Railway’ at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, commencing at 7.30 pm. (Please use the front door opposite Tesco). The entrance fee is £2 for a visitor or £10 to join for the year – there are no extra charges. Refreshments are available and raffles are held on some evenings. Come and enjoy a friendly and informative evening. Everyone is welcome. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. The 2014 outings programme is now available. The sun was out, yay! Spring’s here, we’ve a host of golden daffodils and the freshly weeded beds are showing colour. We’ve been planting French dwarf beans to germinate in toilet rolls, to sell in pots later. Poppies were sown in February and the beginning of March, followed by tomatoes, so there should be lots to enjoy when we’re open for the Mayor’s Trail in June. But in the meantime come in and see for yourselves, and if Seaford you are new to the garden please introduce yourself because we’d love to meet you here at the Crouch for an exchange of ideas. Last Minute Artists at the CrypT

1st – 6th March 2014

It’s hard to believe that Last Minute Artists, the pop-up group that ensures Seaford’s Crypt Gallery is never empty over a weekend, is a year old. Since its first exhibition last March, whenever the Crypt is unbooked on Saturday and Sunday a rota of artists undertakes to fill the slot with a varied selection of two-dimensional and three-dimensional work that continues to delight local people who now make a habit of visiting the Crypt to see what’s on. This show was devoted to the work of the founders and current committee and Seaford watercolourist Bill Bovington, who paints as Lorus Maver, was giving a workshop when I visited. A student was happily taking on board his advice on brushwork and colour – his own work is both reflective and passionate, and I was particularly taken with a couple of apocalyptical paintings of the two Brighton piers as if they were on fire. Another exhibitor, Lynn Gould, said: “We hope to be giving more workshops during pop-ups. We’ve got a nice range of print makers and people with special skills.” A keen birdwatcher, her own talents lie in photographing water birds and I loved her comical puffins. I was also charmed by a couple of gouache miniatures of Glynde Place. The work that certainly caught the public’s eye – halfway through the show, half of it sported red ‘sold’ stickers – was that by Sarah Gregson (photo right). Her naive and jolly capturing of well-known local scenes hit the spot with joyful clear colour and wit.

Nigel Goss offered some interesting takes on everyday life as religion in his Temples and Totems series, which included a gloriously green creation made from reclaimed wood bits. I admired Susan Casebourne’s bright still life pictures, particularly one showing the Peace statue in Hove and a murmuration of starlings, and loved the irony in her picture of a wedding, with the bride less than happy and a guest in shades guzzling beer from a bottle. Bill Savidge displayed a wide range of work, from watercolour and ink guitars on fire to Ploughing and Gulls, an impressionistic painting of interesting hues and spare approach. Geraldine Edmonds had a nice line in humour with her acrylic representations of subjects such as a dancing seagull playing violin against a backdrop of the Seven Sisters. This painting says it all: art that doesn’t take itself too seriously and says “Come on in.” Andrea Hargreaves

A wide variety of activities take place in this spacious venue, including snooker, table tennis, art, plus a ‘quiet room ‘ for board games etc. with two large halls where other activities take place. We now have space to increase our membership for some activities, including our art group which accommodates all levels of ability. The art groups are run by group leaders and although no formal tuition is given, help is available from other artists. Just bring your own equipment and ideas. Many retired people enjoy art, so rather than sit at home, why not give it a try among new friends. Our choir is another friendly group. All you need is a desire to sing with others. No auditions are required; the choir is led by Nigel Goss, a local jazz musician. The group covers a wide range of musical styles and every year at Christmas they present a short concert of Christmas music and carols for all the club members and friends, which is always a very happy occasion. The snooker tables are popular and used every day of the week. Some games are competitive but others are more relaxed, so come along and see for yourself. We have two keep fit groups, both offering their own kind of exercise. In one group some time is given to a little line dancing. Table tennis is another popular activity which takes place in the main halls. We discourage professional playing as we are a club which accommodates all skill levels. Bridge on a Wednesday afternoon would welcome new members, as would Scrabble on a Thursday morning.

On Wednesday afternoon a group of ladies meet to knit and natter, but other ‘crafty’ people are welcome to do their own thing during this session. On Wednesday we have a midday meal for the members and at present we serve 24 regular diners, some of them staying on for the afternoon sessions. The Management Committee is always busy fund raising to improve the venue for everyone, and this has enabled us to start a programme of improvements whilst keeping the annual subscriptions down to just £50, which allows everyone over 60 to come along as many times as they wish without any extra payment. So, why not come and try us out, (first two sessions are free.) For more information either telephone 01323 896422 or call in on a Tuesday between 10am and 12 noon. Rotary Club of Seaford

Boot, Craft & Produce Fairs 2014

Our Boot, Craft & Produce Fairs will be starting up again in April. As last year, they will all be at the Martello Fields on Sundays from 9am to 1pm. Gates will open to stallholders at 7.30am, and the cost of a pitch is £8. Admittance and car parking will be free for the public and refreshments will be available. For any questions phone Mike on 0771 443 0930 or email events@seafordrotary.org.uk. This year’s dates are: 27th April, 18th May, 15th June, 13th July, 10th August, 7th September and 5th October. Last year’s fairs were a great success, with the exception of the freak storm in August of course. So if you have any unwanted bits and pieces that you would like to sell, or if you are looking for that special item why not come along and enjoy the day!

Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir

The Club will present the Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir and Seaford Primary School Choir in concert at Seaford Head School, Arundel Road Site, on Saturday 26 April at 7pm. Tickets are £10, available from Newberry Tully Estate Agent, 53 Church Street, Seaford, or email contacts@seafordrotary.org.uk

Flautist Hambel Goodchild Wins Prize in District Young Musician 2014 Final

The winner of last years Rotary Club of Seaford’s Young Musician of the Year 2013, Hambel Goodchild, played her flute at the Rotary District Young Musician Final at St Hilary’s School, Godalming in February. Despite very tough competition from young musicians from Sussex and Surrey, Hambel won second prize after playing Gluck’s Flute Concerto in G and the Prelude from John Rutter’s Suite Antique. She was accompanied by Anna Pope on the piano. 14-year-old Hambel lives in Seaford and was a student at Seaford Head School until last July when she won a Scholarship to the Purcell School in Hertfordshire, where she now studies. The Rotary Club of Seaford was delighted to sponsor Hambel in their District Young Musician competition, and we are very proud of her success.

Young Musician of the Year

13 young musicians went to Newlands School n February, to take part in the Club’s Annual Young Musician of the Year competition. There were 2 violinists, a viola player, a clarinettist, a flautist, a keyboard player, a pianist and 6 vocalists, all aged between 11 and 17 who either live, or attend a school, in Seaford. The competition aims to give them the experience of appearing in front of an audience and the chance to showcase their musical talent, and the audience was treated to an evening of outstanding instrumental and vocal performances. The difficult job fell to the judges, Andrew Daniels, Margaret Darwall Smith and Pat White, who had to decide the top three, all of whom received prizes. This year’s winner, who was also presented with the Colin Seymour Memorial Shield, was Bethany Geoghegan (violin) and the two runners up were Rosie Moore (vocal/guitar) and Michael Todd (piano). Bethany will now go on to appear at the Seaford Young Mayor’s Awards in the spring. There was also an additional encouragement award which was won by Kiri Harmer (vocal) and all the competitors received commemorative certificates. The prizes were presented by Tula Dyer, Head of Newlands School. Chairman of the Rotary Club’s Youth Opportunities Committee Fred Breeds thanked the judges, Adam Briggs technical organiser from Sussex Events Ltd, MC Damon Willer, entertainers Phil McMullen and Shannon Smith, along with Newlands School for hosting the evening. Fred congratulated all the competitors and said this was just one of the many ways in which the Rotary Club aims to support the young people of Seaford. Florence Hardy Trip to Peru

On a Wednesday in February Girl Guide Florence Hardy visited the Club to talk about her experiences on her trip to Peru last year. To raise the necessary funds Florence undertook car boot sales, bingo nights, cake sales and bracelet making. She also approached local organisations, including the Club, and we were pleased to be able to help her, both by giving her a donation and by letting her have a free pitch at our Car Boot, Craft & Produce Fair. While the team was in Peru they worked

at the Kiya Survivors Rainbow Centre, where, as well as working in the classrooms with the children, they painted and re-decorated the school. This included a giant snakes and ladders board in the playground, colourful spots on the stage to help with positions when they put on school plays, snakes leading into the school and train tracks in between each classroom. A memorable moment of the trip was seeing the joy on the children’s faces when they came in when all of the painting was done and it was a great feeling to see what a difference all their hard work had actually made. The team spent two weeks of their trip working with the children and Florence said that it was lovely to get to know them. She was amazed at how willing they were to play with members of the team and get involved in the activities they had planned. But the most inspiring aspect of her trip was seeing how, despite the physical or mental disabilities facing the children at the centre, they still managed to be the happiest group of young people that she had ever met. The trip wasn’t all work though; during the weekends she did activities including a horse-back tour of the Sacred Valley, a hike up to some Inca ruins and a personal highlight of the trip for her was climbing up Machu Picchu. Before they left Peru they spent a weekend in the Amazon area and then went to Florida where she spent the last four days of their trip at Camp Choee and got to know about American Girl Guiding cultures. Florence concluded by saying that the trip to Peru had been one of the best experiences of her life, and she thanked all of the people who supported her for giving her the opportunity to go on the trip. Florence has been selected by the Club to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) week in April, and she had the opportunity to meet the other two young people who are being sponsored by the Club for RYLA this year, Marianne Best and Ella Edwards. The Club wished them a successful and fulfilling week, which will involve them in team building and leadership experiences.

Equally Divided Seaford Little Theatre

I’m not quite sure of the significance of playwright Ronald Harwood’s choice of a converted railway carriage for a setting for this deceptively powerful play, but it provided lots of opportunity for funny lines, erm, based on lines. Maybe, I couldn’t help musing, he was having a private joke at the expense of the quartet of actors who had to learn a huge number of them. But learn them they did – they were word and expression perfect. When I considered that a large proportion of the opening scene consisted of a monologue of a phone call delivered with captivating assurance by Margaret Kennedy as the downtrodden sister who was left to look after the recently deceased Ma, I knew I was in for a treat. Director Dennis Picott worked magic on the verbose script, no doubt very grateful that four of the theatre’s stalwarts were cast for this comedy-drama that puts a case for doing wrong to do right in the cause of justice. The story concerns two sisters, single and impecunious Eva (Margaret Kennedy) and flighty, rich, sexy and muchmarried Renata Taylor (Sylvia Aston), who meet in the family home to hear the reading of the will by pompous Charles Mowbray (Roland Boorman). Ma has spent her daughters’ inheritance on antiques, and when the solicitor suggests inviting a top dealer to assess the value, Eva, who has worn herself to the bone looking after her mother for 15 years while Renata hasn’t so much as chipped a fingernail, seeks out local dealer Fabian HIll (Alan Lade). All four actors should be commended for their light touch, letting Harwood’s words do their work. Kennedy, who is no stranger to the director’s chair herself and has been involved with 61 productions, was at ease in her role, extracting the comedy in the early scenes, but becoming steadily more steely as she realised how unjust was the will. Scenes between Kennedy and Aston fizzed and sparkled, the former appearing martyred and petty against Aston’s delightfully played selfish younger

sister who pocketed a treasure from the south coast railway carriage before running off back to London. Aston, a member of this theatre for 30 years, was in her element playing the role with laughter-provoking verve and a cold indifference masked by put-on-for-effect tears. And talking of tears, Boorman was no slouch at false emotion either, forgetting to mourn his late wife when Aston happened along – and pocketing a little objet when he had the chance. Lade made a believable lovable rogue, subtly persuading Kennedy to go along with his plan to ensure what she realised was due to her. This play was, however, ultimately unsatisfactory – the curtain came down almost as if the author couldn’t be bothered to write a fitting conclusion – but it was given ultimate authority by the quality of the direction, the set and, most of all, by the quality of the cast of four. Answer and more details in next month’s issue... Last month’s picture: On Tuesday 17th August 1943 a lone German bomber flew low over the Martello Tower and dropped two bombs in central Seaford. Although no one was killed, many properties in East Street were destroyed or damaged. East Street was closed for two days whilst the rubble was cleared. Seaford Urban District Council rebuilt properties which were opened in 1950. The plaque can still be seen in East Street. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB On 20th February the Club welcomed Caroline Newberry who spoke about the history of canals from the Bridgwater Canal built to transport coal to the industrial cities. Wearing a costume dating from the late 19th and 20th centuries and a bonnet she had made herself which resembled those seen on Western films she told of the locks and tunnels which had to be navigated. The Castles and Roses painted decorations were shown as Caroline explained where on a narrow boat these would have been placed. Questions were taken from the floor and after our President had given a vote of thanks, tea and biscuits were served and the raffle drawn. On Maundy Thursday 17th April Graham King will demonstrate “Bursting Full of Colour”. Graham has visited Seaford several times and he is a talented flower arranger who entertains with music and has made many interesting containers.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

NYAS are now recruiting volunteers to become Independent Visitors across East Sussex to befriend and mentor children and young people in care. Independent Visitors take a real interest in the lives, hopes and concerns of children and young people in care and are there to listen and help. Volunteers can make a real difference to a young person by sharing a hobby, sport, or interest, helping with school or college work, helping to access community resources, or simply going for outings such as walks, bowling or the cinema. All Independent Visitors are volunteers over 18 years old. They need no formal qualifications just a genuine and active interest in the welfare of children and young people. There is a thorough recruitment process. Best practice meetings and supervised support are provided to all volunteers. What do we ask of you? After successful recruitment which includes training, we ask you to offer a few hours a month to support a young person. Visits usually take place at evenings, weekends and in school holidays. We ask for a commitment of at least two years. If you are interested in becoming an Independent Visitor, please contact Sarah McStravick on 07804631425 or email sarah.mcstravick@nyas.net NYAS is a UK charity providing socio-legal services. the Friends of Tide Mills

The Friends of Tide Mills completed its February meeting in brilliant wall to wall sunshine. 23 of us (including several very welcome new members) managed a mammoth 30 bags of rubbish and any amount of heavier, bulkier items – a fantastic effort by anybody’s reckoning. We again left Tide Mills in very good heart and hopefully all visitors will agree, and despite this atrocious and unprecedented weather of late, it looks fantastic and just waiting for the first true signs of spring. Readers will want to be aware that some Palm Oil (see photo right) has been found on the beach, which has been reported to the EA. This is a particularly nasty substance which is known to be poisonous to dogs. Unfortunately several dead sea birds were also found. Visitors will also be concerned about the EA lorries and diggers removing shingle from the Tide Mills beach front, as emergency shoring up work for Seaford beach, which is now effectively destroyed as we know. The EA has assured us that both the vegetated shingle habitat and land behind will not be compromised, but of course this ongoing situation needs to be monitored. Newhaven Port Properties has very kindly donated more litter sacks and some super-duper new litter grabbers, so we have plenty to spare for everybody – we very much appreciate NPPs ongoing support for our merry little but steadily growing band. Our next meeting is Sunday the 20th April (always the third Sunday of each month), meeting at 10am at the waymarker adjacent to the beach at the road leading from the level crossing. Our meetings last nominally for two hours but all are welcome no matter how much time can be spared. A Good Read

Sophie’s Bakery for the Broken Hearted by Lolly Winston

36-year-old Sophie has just lost her husband, Ethan, to cancer. She had only been married a few years and is devastated. Lolly Winston takes us on a journey through the emotional rollercoaster of bereavement and its different stages, from denial to acceptance. At first Sophie is a wreck, someone who sleeps all day and guzzles cartons of ice cream for breakfast. When she shows up for work, distraught in her bathrobe and bunny slippers, she finds she’s not only lost her husband but her job in a Silicon Valley PR firm. Devastated, Sophie leaves California for Ashland, Oregon and through the fog of her grief starts to rebuild her life. She discovers a previously hidden talent and opens the bakery of the title. Along the way she has to deal with her mother-in-law and also collects a rag-taggle bunch of new friends who variously try to seduce her, support her and

burn her house down. As she juggles her business with her new life, Sophie proves that with enough humour and bravado it is possible to rebuild a life after a devastating loss. And who’s to say she can’t find love again in the process... Lolly Winston knows how to tug the heart strings. Sophie’s grief is present throughout the book, and heartbreakingly raw, yet the book is funny, touching and uplifting by turns. Even at her lowest, Sophie maintains a wry sense of humour: on an application which asks who to contact in case of emergency, she finds that she has no name to enter so writes “George Clooney”. Keep the Kleenex handy – this novel will have even the hardest-hearted reader in tears.

Easter Eggs & Easter Bunnies Eggs have been used as symbols at festivals since before the time of Jesus, but are now particularly synonymous with Easter and the story of the resurrection. Eggs are said to represent new life, and for Christians when they are cracked open, they stand for the empty tomb following Jesus’ rising. Eggs are also considered special, because although they do not seem alive they have life within them – especially in springtime when chicks hatch out. In previous times people gave gifts of eggs carved from wood or precious stones. It is only in the last 100 years or so that sweet eggs have been eaten. The size and range of chocolate eggs available seems to increase every year. The tallest chocolate egg was 10.39 metres tall and made in Italy in 2011. It weighed 7.2 kilograms and was 9.6 metres at its widest point! It is not known exactly who first created the story of the Easter Bunny, but it seems to have its origins in Germany. It was first mentioned in German texts in the 16th Century. In the 1700s German immigrants told stories when they went to America of egg-laying rabbits, and they encouraged children to use caps and bonnets to make nests which the Easter bunny would fill with coloured eggs _ if they’d been good. The first edible Easter bunnies appeared in Germany during the early 1800s and were made of pastry and sugar. The symbol of the rabbit was probably chosen because of its associations with fertility and spring. It is believed that Eostre, the Anglo Saxon God of Spring, had a hare as a companion. In addition to having Easter egg hunts to search for the eggs left by the Bunny, another common Easter activity

is egg rolling. This is done using real hard boiled eggs, and time is usually spent decorating them beforehand. In years gone by the eggs were dyed using onion skin, today’s painting process is much easier. In the UK egg rolling is generally done by rolling eggs down a hill, and the winner is the one whose egg rolls further or survives the most rolls. In the early nineteenth century in Northern Ireland, egg rolling was described as ‘trindling’ or ‘trundling.’ Another traditional game involves holding your egg in the palm of the hand and banging against your opponent’s egg. The loser is the one whose egg breaks first. In the USA one of the most well known events is held on the White House Lawn, and involves parents and children pushing eggs along through the grass with wooden spoons. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Carol editorial 74x109mm 28/02/2014 22:01 Page 1

fter living in Seaford for almost twenty years, opera and cabaret singer Carol Rowlands

finally makes her debut here this April, when she takes to the stage at the Barn Theatre on 19th April for the very first time in her own show, “Carol Singing in April”. The programme will range from opera to pop, and will be made up of personal favourites with wide appeal. Carol will be joined by guest singers and musicians – some from Seaford and Lewes – and there’s a surprise ensemble number aimed at making the audience smile. Carol has worked with most of Britain’s major opera companies, including Covent Garden, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera, and has sung in America, Italy, Malta, Germany, France, Ireland and Holland. She’s also a pencil pet artist and dog lover. The concert will be recorded, and a DVD of it will be available later, with proceeds going to charity. One thing Carol is prepared to reveal now about the programme: "There won’t actually be any carols!"

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

Seaford-based Synergy Theatre is delighted to be returning to their Studio venue, Kingston Parish Hall, Kingston-near-Lewes, with their production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama, A Doll’s House. Torvald Helmer, a successful lawyer, lives with his charming wife, Nora, their three delightful children and their housekeeper in a cosy apartment. Newly promoted to the position of Managing Director of a prestigious bank, and safely through a serious health scare, Torvald’s life could not be better. Things are looking up, with a promotion, a substantial pay rise, a pretty wife by his side and his position as head of his household never more secure. But all is not as it seems. Nora’s best friend from school, Kristine, arrives unexpectedly on their doorstep but is she here to reminisce or to manipulate? What exactly

East Blatchington Lectures A once famous novelist whose acid comments led to her diaries being kept closed for nearly 40 years is the subject of the next East Blatchington Lecture. She was Mrs Dudeney, who vividly describes her tragi-comic marriage to the celebrated mathematician Henry Dudeney, her career, her lover and two world wars, as well as her forays into high society through her friendship with the millionaire politician Sir Philip Sassoon. A Lewes Diary has been edited by Diana Crook, who will be talking about the diaries at St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road, Seaford, on Tuesday, April 1. The passage of time has allowed a new edition of the diaries to give previously withheld information on Mrs Dudeney’s lover, a Sussex artist, as well as intriguing gossip concerning a clergyman and an amateur actress. What they don’t tell you when you say ‘I do’... I own a property in my sole name. Will I retain it if I get divorced? Although the legal title of the property would remain in your sole name, the beneficial ownership would change as the starting point for division of all assets on divorce is a 50/50 division regardless of whose name the property is held in. All the circumstances of every case will be taken into account such as the length of marriage, the protection of any children and whether the property has been occupied as the marital home. However, meeting the needs of the spouses is always prioritised regardless of who made the contribution. In contrast, for unmarried couples as a starting point the beneficial title of a property will mirror the legal title. So if a property is held in one person’s sole name the assumption is that they also own the beneficial title, unless an intention to the contrary can be proved.

If I receive an inheritance, this is mine and I will retain it if I get divorced won’t I? Depending upon when the inheritance was received and whether it has been mixed with matrimonial assets or kept separately, an inheritance may be ringfenced. Ultimately, meeting the needs of both the spouses and any dependent children will be again be prioritised regardless of the source. If however there are surplus funds to meet both of the spouses needs, then there is a strong argument for ringfencing.

Our Deed of Trust says I have a greater interest in our property, is this enforceable? The circumstances surrounding the Deed of Trust will be considered as well as the timing. For unmarried couples the Deed of Trust will be indicative of the intentions of the parties’, unless an alterior or modified intention can be proved.

82

Following marriage, the starting point is a 50/50 division and there may be a stronger argument that this should be the case if the property was the marital home. Contributions may be a relevant consideration subject to the specific circumstances.

What can I do to protect myself? You should consider entering into a Pre or Post Nuptial Agreement setting out what is agreed between you and your fiancé/spouse. The landmark case of Radmacher in 2010, established that the Court should give effect to a Pre-Nuptial agreement that was freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications unless in the circumstances prevailing it would not be fair to hold the parties to their agreement. Although Nuptial Agreements cannot currently be guaranteed to be 100% legally binding, the Law Commissions Report published on 27 February 2014, suggested that ‘Qualifying’ Nuptial Agreements should be legally binding. Emphasis is placed on both parties’ providing a full disclosure to one another regarding their financial circumstances and both having sought independent legal advice. If that is achieved and the needs of the parties’ and children are met, the indication given is that the Nuptial Agreement should be upheld. If you would like further advice regarding the changes in your legal position on marriage and entering into a Nuptial Agreement, please contact the Mayo Wynne Baxter Family Team. SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Come and join us – we start our 2014 season of outdoor meetings on 1st April with a stroll around Friston Forest looking for signs of spring. On 22nd April we are going to West Harbour Newhaven to see what we can find on the beach and on the 29th April we go birding – there are two walks that day, one at 7am and the second at 10am. On our last bird walk in August 2013, virtue was definitely its own reward. We saw many more birds in the early morning session, including a relatively rare migrant wryneck (left). Our outdoor meetings are gentle walks usually lasting about two and a half hours. They generally take place on Tuesdays – see the listings in Seaford Scene for details. We look forward to seeing our current members and welcoming visitors and prospective new members on these walks. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation.

For more information about the society, please visit our website www. seafordnaturalhistory. org.uk or ring 01323 491964.

Out and about in April

There is plenty to see in the countryside at this time of the year, spring flowers are coming out, the trees are in bud, birds are beginning to nest, the bees are flying – so take a walk in the countryside, or join us on one of our walks, and see what you can find. At the same time, it’s important to remember what wonderful habitats our gardens are for wildlife. I’m grateful to Chris Brewer who gave us a talk on wildlife in our gardens at our recent AGM. Domestic gardens used to be thought of as wildlife deserts but in fact they are very rich habitats, or more precisely mosaics of habitats. There are 15 million gardens in the UK covering an area (270,000 hectares or 4,000 square miles) larger than all of the national nature reserves. Those of you who have computers might try looking at Seaford on Google Earth – it’s very green and you can see that individual gardens are not isolated but form larger strip of habitat. This is vital for animals such as hedgehogs, badgers and foxes, which regularly pass through many of our gardens. One of the studies that confirms the importance of gardens was done by Jennifer Owen in Leicester. Over 30 years she ‘observed’ her modest suburban garden and found a total of 2673 species of wildlife. Most of them were insects and invertebrates, the bedrock of biodiversity. There were 474 plant species, of which 307 were cultivated and 145 spontaneous introductions. Some might call these weeds but wildlife doesn’t make the distinction and uses both as food and shelter. She also found 64 species of vertebrates, including 54 species of birds. For more details about this study see Wildlife of a Garden: A Thirty-Year Study by Jennifer Owen, published the Royal Horticultural Society or look on the web.

84

So if you don’t get into the countryside, do have a look at the wildlife in your garden. Gardens are such a good place to start. Apart from anything else, weather permitting you can sit down with a wildlife book and identify things over a cup of tea! Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Running Commentary... A good few years ago the Seaford Striders devised a local running route and called it The Twit Ten. The name, I hasten to add, was not meant to be a mild insult to those running it but a way of recognising the fact that it involved going along ten twittens. Fortunately, Seaford is blessed with loads of them, and as long as runners show due respect to other users of the alleyways they can be a beneficial alternative to just running on pavements. Interestingly, my speed always seems to pick up when I run along a twitten and I’m not really sure why. It may just seem quicker as there must be a greater awareness of one’s pace when running so close to the hedge or fence on either side. Perhaps it is because it simulates the ‘lane’ of an athletics track, which is associated with running fast, although I suppose it could be to do with a feeling of being trapped (like in a tunnel) and needing to escape it as soon as possible. Whatever it is that makes you run faster in a twitten, they are definitely worth making use of. One of my favourite twit tens (which actually has 14 twittens) starts at the Leisure Centre and heads for the twitten by the Seven Sisters Pub which drops down to Vale Road. Three more twittens will get me to Grand Avenue, five more to Carlton Road and finally 5 more (all downhill) to reach Blatchington Road by the Trek Club. Writing this article in early March I am pleased to see that the beach is now more runner-friendly (thanks to the storms that have ravaged the seafront) so I hope that when you read this, running on the sand will still be a possibility, and it may encourage you to enter the Littlehampton Beach Run West Sussex in July. Before that you may like to consider any or all of the three local Easter-themed events - the Bunny 2.5km Fun Run on the 13th April in Haywards Heath, the Lewes Easter Monday 10km, 2 miles or 800 metres on the 21st and

the Bluebell 10km in Angmering on the 27th. It seems to me that there are many more people running round the roads of Seaford, and I’m sure they’re not all building up for the London or Brighton Marathons. I see it as a good indicator of the continuing popularity of the healthy pastime of running. If you don’t run and have wanted to take it up but just haven’t got round to it yet, then I suggest you give it a try this month, and if you do, there is a perfect target to aim for next month. The 6th May 2014 (a Tuesday) will be the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile, so I suggest every runner recognises this special day, and runs a mile. I shall look into the possibility of organising a series of timed miles either on the seafront or perhaps the Salts on that particular Tuesday. Please look for further details in the local press or in next month’s Seaford Scene. Meanwhile, you might like to use it as a reason for going out for a run more often. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

Tackle Homophobia For a third successive year the Tackle Homophobia Project with Sussex Clubs for Young People played host to the Sussex Round of a National 5-a-side football tournament at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford. More than 140 young people from across Sussex battled it out in various age groups in the amazing spring sunshine attempting to progress in the national competition. Tackle Homophobia Teams from Seaford and Peacehaven successfully won their groups, and will now progress to the South Regional Finals held in Basingstoke in April. The tournament was organised as part of the Tackle Homophobia Project, a partnership between Mercread Youth Centre, The Justin Campaign and Albion in the Community, which works with young people across the Lewes District to raise awareness and challenge homophobia on and off the pitch. Project Coordinator Sam Whittaker said, “This established project continues to proactively challenge

homophobia at a local grassroots level through positive activities and informal education. The young people involved represent the project’s strong message that discrimination of any form in any setting is not acceptable.” The project, now in its fourth year, has engaged with over 1,000 young people, through the delivery of educational workshops and weekly football sessions. “The emphasis is on providing a supportive environment which is open and inclusive for all players whatever their background,” added Tackle Homophobia Project Coach Barry Cooper. Tackle Homophobia has received support from a wide range of organisations including The FA, and has been highlighted as an example of innovative good practice around challenging discrimination in sport. Chris Gibbons, an FA Inclusion Education Advisor said, “Putting young people at the heart of this work, through the Tackle Homophobia project, sends out a clear message that everyone regardless of sexual orientation should be able to enjoy participating in football.”

Inner Wheel of Seaford Over 60 members of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford, together with visitors from other Clubs attended a frugal lunch at St Leonards Church Hall in aid of “School in a Bag,” an innovative charity which raises money for a simple solution to help poor, orphaned, vulnerable and disaster affected children throughout the world. According to UNICEF figures 20% of the world’s child population will never attend school. An education for these children could be their passport to a life out of hardship and poverty. The charity provides a cost-effective answer to a worldwide problem. Each schoolbag is filled with stationery, learning resources and eating utensils that will enable a youngster to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves and above all, learn. On behalf of “School in a Bag” Luke Simon gave an informative and engaging talk which his audience enthusiastically endorsed. Participants enjoyed delicious soup and a sweet, bought raffle tickets, browsed a sales table and guessed the name of a very large teddy bear. Andrea Butti, the Overseas Organiser, announced that the event had raised a total of £500, which will enable “School in a Bag” to supply over 30 rucksacks to needy children. Wave Leisure M.D. to retire after 45-year leisure career Peter Crowley, managing director of Wave Leisure Trust Ltd, retired at the end of March after a hugely successful career in sports and leisure. Having started work at the age of 15 as a cabinet maker during his late teens, Peter volunteered in the Youth Service, was a youth leader of a youth club and completed his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – collecting his gold award at Buckingham Palace. Aged 19 Peter took a part-time job as a pool lifeguard and swimming teacher at Cranleigh Sports Centre in Surrey to complement his strong and keen sporting interests – thus his illustrious career in leisure began. Peter then spent 16 years working variously as a PE

teacher and pools manager at Aylesbury Grammar School, the London Borough of Croydon, Bromley and the London Borough of Wandsworth. During this time he successfully completed the Institute of Sport & Recreation Management (ISRM) certificate, a Certificate in Management Studies and the ISRM Diploma. He was also National Golf Secretary, National Council Member and Executive Member of the ISRM and a member of the South East Executive. In 1985 Peter moved to Crawley Leisure Centre as Operations Manager. At the time Crawley Leisure Centre was one of the largest in the south east and it was awarded the South of England Sports Council Award as the best centre in the region during his tenure. In 1987 career progression brought Peter to Lewes District Council in the role of Assistant Director for Leisure Services. Over the subsequent years Peter has held the positions of DSO (Direct Services Organisation) General Manager, Head of Community Leisure and Acting Director of Leisure Services for Lewes District Council. This experience led Peter to the conclusion that the best future for leisure provision was in the form of a leisure trust. Following two years of work in setting up Wave Leisure Trust, Peter was required to resign from his post with the council and officially re-apply for the role of Managing Director for Wave Leisure. The Trust was officially launched in October 2006. During the latter part of his career Peter has continued to invest in his learning and development by undertaking a Diploma in Management Studies and three national audit qualifications for ISO, QUEST and the British Quality Foundation. In the last 12 months Peter has been recognised by the industry by being awarded a Chartered Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). He is only one of 21 holders of the prestigious Chartered status. Peter makes no apologies for his passion for sports and leisure as he says he has been lucky enough to get paid for what he loves and it has provided him with a long and successful career.

He is looking forward to sharing more of his time with his family, especially his extremely supportive and patient wife, Valerie. He is also looking forward being able to relax on a few holidays and spend some more time participating in his other passions – swimming, table tennis and golf.

SHORTCUTS

It is time again to hear from Seaford Kurlers. Like the rest of you, we are hoping for a successful year. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us all and we can enjoy warm sunny days.

BARBER SHOP

Serving the people of Seaford for 20 years! Open 6 days

Seaford is a beautiful place to be with sun, sea and countryside to delight us. A gentle stroll along the beach, a dip in the sea or a walk on the downs. For something a little different, why not try a new activity? After the success our sports people have had in curling at the winter Olympics, we can show you New Age Kurling, which is a tamer, warmer version of curling. Imagine a sports hall laid out for badminton, four badminton courts in fact. Seaford Kurlers play New Age Kurling on these courts. We exercise, we socialise, we compete and we keep fit and mobile. No matter what level of mobility you have, we will show you how to spend a fun 2 hours every Tuesday afternoon.

The Right To Refuse Local charity, Sound Architect, has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £10,000 to research and record the history of conscientious objectors from Sussex, COs, in the First World War. The project will recognise the dedication and courage of all those who lived and fought during the War, and acknowledge the reasoning, punishment and impact on those who exercised ‘the right to refuse’. A large number of those recorded as refusing the call to fight did so on religious grounds, and many COs still carried out work of national importance such as farming, and some were sent to the Front as stretcher bearers. Refusing to fight might have been a stigma to friends or family, but some of these men had very important noncombatant roles. This project will involve students from Newlands School in Seaford and local volunteers who will be trained in interviewing and document research techniques. They will investigate archives, diaries and other historical

papers to explore the history, impact, and treatment of conscientious objectors and the alternative roles they played during the War. This will bring young and old together learning new research and investigation skills, hearing accurate accounts of life for conscientious objectors and interviewing the older generation about their thoughts and any memories of COs they might have known. The project will involve the expertise of many locals, including the historian Ann Kramer, who has recently written books on conscientious objectors, including one for students called “Conchies”. Organisations across the South East will be invited to participate and the students and volunteers will visit sites in Seaford where some COs were put to road building, as well as the site of the prison in which some COs were held. The students will, from the research, create a documentary film and accompanying booklet which will be displayed later this year to the community at large. Head Teacher of Newlands School, Tula Dyer, said: “We are thrilled to be part of this project: to be able to create a sense of place and identity with local heritage that can be shared with present and future generations. We hope to inspire the students and the whole community, increasing awareness and skills in history, media and citizenship.” Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South East, Stuart McLeod, said, “Thousands of individual experiences formed the complex history of the First World War. The Heritage Lottery Fund is committed to enabling a variety of stories to be explored and understood. Little is known about the lives of many conscientious objectors and this project will help us all to understand this important part of the story, alongside many others.” If you would like to be involved in the project as a volunteer, the Charity would love to hear from you. Or if you have any papers, photos or diaries from the First World War, or if a member of your family was a conscientious objector, do please get in touch by calling Sound Architect on 07592 021590, or via the website www.soundarchitect.org.uk
