Welcome
Welcome to the July issue. I can’t believe half of this year has gone already! Where has the time gone too? So what’s happening in Seaford this month? Well, there are outdoor activities including the South Coast Triathlon on Saturday 5th and the South Coast Run on Sunday 6th. There’s a Family Fun day at the Downs Leisure Centre on Sunday 20th, the Synergy Theatre is performing in the Crouch Gardens on the 12th and 13th and there are more open gardens, raising money for charity, and local guided tours. Indoors there are exhibitions at the Crypt, the RSPB Summer Fair is on the 12th, the latest production at the Little Theatre is this month and there are services of remembrance in local churches. More details throughout this issue and on the “What’s’ On” pages. Happy days...

The Friends of Seaford Library The Friends of Seaford Library have been continuously campaigning on behalf of Seaford residents since September 2000 for improved library facilities for our ever-growing community – the previous library despite refurbishment was way too small for a town now well over 26,000 residents and with several housing developments yet to open. In February 2012 the old library was finally closed and subsequently demolished. A new building, Warwick House, has now taken its place. Unlike the old building it has also been designed to incorporate residential use. Sadly, although the temporary library in Blatchington Road opened in March 2012 has in the meantime served the town very well, it has remained in use much longer than originally forecast. We do not now anticipate that it will itself close until sometime late this Summer. Warwick House was finally handed over to East Sussex County Council by the builders at the end of May, and

now it has to be decorated and fitted out. This will take time and meanwhile we urge the using public to be patient. We have waited so long for this momentous occasion, the first purpose-built municipal building in Seaford for probably 100 years, and although its design has created some divergences of opinion, it utilises the available space of the old site and the open balcony on the top of the building will no doubt afford stunning views of the town with Seaford Head as a glorious backdrop. The Friends have been raising money through events, book sales and stalls for example, over many years to provide equipment for the new library, and at our last Committee meeting we have agreed to pledge an appreciable sum to the Library authorities for use, ideally on furniture or similar items. By the time of appearing in print we shall hopefully know what items we have contributed to the new building. We continually update our website with news about the opening, and advise all those interested to refer to it at: http://www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/fosl/ We will also be running a fund raising stall at the Martello Tower Open Day on August 3rd and will be participating in “Seaford Live” in September by holding a book-reading at Seaford Little Theatre on September 11th. Details of these events can be found on our website. Our membership fee remains low at £4 p.a, (Single) £6 (Family or Group). Sea Sunday – bringing help and hope to seafarers in need everywhere As one of the Church of England’s “Partners in Mission” The Mission to Seafarers continues to work closely with the Anglican Communion across the world, working in around 260 ports in 71 countries. Sea Sunday will be held this year on 13th July 2014, and it is the church’s response to the continuing need to provide prayer, pastoral care and welfare support to the world’s 1.5 million seafarers, whose work is often lonely, isolated and dangerous. They ensure that the goods we take for granted arrive at our shores, day in day out, 365 days a year.

What many people do not fully appreciate, unless they are connected to the sea through their family and friends, is that the austere life of a modern day seafarer is far from comfortable or contented. The great oceans of the world remain wild and hostile spaces, where merchant ships, large and small, carry crews who labour in often-difficult conditions, with the prospect of seeing home ten months or even years away. The Mission to Seafarers offers friendship and support to all seafarers, but all too frequently their work brings them into contact with heart-breaking cases. Often the chaplains are called on to support seafarers who have been “abandoned” or detained in ports far from home, left to rot on sub-standard, hazardous vessels. Some ship-owners who find themselves in economic difficulty simply cut off supplies, leaving crews marooned on ships with no clear legal status and no money to get them home. Even here in the UK this happens. (The Donald Duckling is a recent justice case dealt with by the Mission and which is just one example of the range of issues that arise).
But help is always at hand
The mission provides dedicated, discreet and effective chaplaincy teams ready to give essential, compassionate aid to all seafarers who find themselves in troubled waters. Whether they have been abandoned, shipwrecked or have personal or professional problems, they are offered impartial support, advice and care. In emergencies the mission supplies food and water on board, fuel to keep ships’ generators running, and access to vital communications, such as connection to the internet and email through laptops and mobile phones. In all this the mission’s work is motivated by a profound determination to share the never-failing love of God, revealed in Jesus who himself spent so much time with “seafarers”. At our seaside parish church of St Andrew’s, Bishopstone Village, our Sea Sunday Service will be held at 10.15 on 13th July 2014. Our guest preacher will be the Revd. Colin Noyce OCM(RN) from Portsmouth, who is a retired Royal Navy Chaplain and is also a retired Mission to Seafarers Chaplain, who has spent most of his ministry with seafarers. He has served in this country but also in Mombasa, Trinidad, Aden and Cyprus with the Mission. A warm welcome awaits all those who may wish to join us at this special service in recognition of the work and sacrifices made by all of the world’s seafarers on whom our daily lives depend.

The Sussex Arts Collective was formed in 2006 by Phil Duncan to promote the work of local artists who produce individual and unique art and craft work. The “Collective” also provides opportunities to exhibit together in Open Houses and galleries. The Collective has been organising the very popular Christmas art and craft show at the HOP gallery Lewes since 2000 and following a highly successful Artwave last year will be making regular visits to the Arts@theCrypt Gallery. Open membership is now available to artists and craftspeople that work or live in Sussex. An associated membership is also available for sponsors, organisations, groups of individuals who organise, provide services for artists or curate creative activities in Sussex. Out and about with Seaford Natural History Society I’m writing this on a lovely sunny day in May – hopefully this weather will continue and there will be lots of opportunities to get out into the garden or the countryside this summer and enjoy the wildlife. Seaford Natural History Society’s programme in July includes a walk from Belle Tout car park towards Cornish Farm on the 1st July looking for wild flowers and a walk round Seaford Head with the Sussex Wildlife Trust ranger, Sarah Quantrill, on the 22nd – see the listings at the end of Seaford Scene, our website www.seafordnaturalhistory. org.uk or telephone 01323 491964 for more details. (If you can’t make the Seaford Head walk on the 22nd, Sarah is leading one of a series of walks for the general public on the 17th July from 10am to 12 noon, meeting at South Hill Barn – again see the listings for details.) There are so many flowers out at this time of the year it is impossible to summarise them but it is worth looking
out for the profusion of wild flowers, including betony, in the verges of the Beachy Head road, the sea lavender on the ditches next to the Vanguard Way in Cuckmere Haven, red poppies in fields everywhere, and moth mullein near Southease station – each is very different from the others and they provide a vivid example of the richness of the flora locally – and a reminder that if we want our children and grandchildren to enjoy such diversity in the future we need to maintain the habitats that support them. If you enjoy wildlife, come and join us. Seaford Natural History Society is a friendly informal group of people keen to learn about the plants, birds and insects of our local countryside. We welcome visitors and prospective new members on our walks which usually last about two and a half hours. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation. We will be publishing our winter programme of talks in September. Photos l-r: Moth Mullein and Betony.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY Cheque Presentation to Seahaven Storehouse On Saturday 10th May in St Leonards Church, Seaford, the Choral society held their Spring Concert when they sang Dvorak’s Stabat Mater. This wonderfully moving and exciting work was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Four marvellous soloists made the evening unforgettable. The retiring collections from our concerts are always donated to a local charity and our chosen charity to benefit from this concert was Seahaven Storehouse, a Seaford organisation which provides basic food items to individuals and families in need within the Seahaven area. Seahaven Storehouse was set up in 2013 by Dawn Woodgate at the Community Church in Vale Road and opens its doors each Thursday morning from 10 to 1. Those who have been referred (usually by government or other agencies) meet and enjoy a coffee and a

Singing in Cambridge The chapel of Magdalene College Cambridge, will be the host to a group from the Seaford Choral Society on Thursday 10th July. 26 members of the Society will be travelling to the City, to sing Choral Evensong that afternoon, at 3pm. Detailed arrangements for the trip have been made by Society Chairman, Mike Rogers and its Music Director, Sion Parry. This will be Sion’s last SCS commitment, as he leaves for a new job in Ipswich, on 1st September. Choral Society bass and former Vicar in the Southwark Diocese, Colin Pritchard, will conduct the service. The Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail Geoff Stonebanks, who is the inspiration and organiser behind The Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, taking place in it’s 3rd year on the 26th and 27th July has had an incredible response for 2014. There will be an amazing 31 gardens opening along the coast from Brighton to Eastbourne and up through Piddinghoe also taking in Seaford and Bishopstone. Geoff says “I have created six smaller trails within the 31 total. The Seaford & Bishopstone trail will have five gardens opening, two of them for the very first time in 2014! In all there are 19 new gardens for 2014.” Readers may know that Geoff runs the Driftwood Fundraising Group and has raised £13,000 for the new cancer centre in
Brighton so far. He has persuaded Christine Walkden to be the patron for the second year and you can find the details on the web site www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk or on 01323 899296. Visitors to his own garden, Driftwood, on Sunday 27th July will be in for a treat as Jean Griffin, often heard as the gardening expert on BBC Sussex’s Dig It programme on a Sunday morning, will be in the garden answering visitors’ gardening questions.

Sally Attrell, of 27 Alfriston Park, joined the trail at the last minute and is opening her beautiful garden (photo left) for the very first time. The other 4 gardens in Seaford are 14 Lullington Close and Windover in Chyngton Lane North, as well as 39 Marine Drive and Driftwood at 4 Marine Drive in Bishopstone. Christine Walkden says, “Opening gardens and sharing them with others is a great treat for all. It generates a sense of community, camaraderie and interest in the beauty that gardeners create. I am thrilled to be the patron of this event for Macmillan for a 2nd year and wish everyone a great time.” Trail maps and booklets will be available in the first garden visited and entry will be £2 per garden or £12 for a ticket that will get you in all gardens over both days! We are marking the start of our summer Saturday morning openings with our first workshop in the classroom on 5th July at 10.30am on the subject of growing plants for local conditions, when all are welcome to learn from volunteer and horticultural professional, Tricia. These will be very informal sessions at which the emphasis will be on answering your queries about your own particular horticultural problems in Seaford and sharing your experiences. We can’t help thinking that if gardening were available on the NHS as a treatment for all manner of ills then Seaford Community Garden would be a great place to hold a clinic. And we’re not the only ones to think so, it seems, because on Wednesday morning, 23rd July, we shall be hosting a seminar in our classroom requested by representatives of Age UK East Sussex who are keen to see how we have made the garden accessible to all and able to provide learning opportunities and all-round enjoyment for our volunteers, such as raised beds, sensible paths and special tools. Come along between 10am and noon when there will be several taster sessions of about 20 minutes each to give everyone who attends an idea of the scope afforded by the garden. We are also looking forward to a visit from an occupational therapist at St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne who is eager to see what we do. We are glad to be involved in The Big Sunflower Project 2014, which is again raising awareness about the rare neuromuscular conditions centronuclear and myotubular myopathy. In exchange for seeds we shall be sending photos of the resulting sunflowers. To obtain your free seeds email centronuclear.org@btopenworld with your address and follow the progress of the project on Facebook, Flickr, Project Dirt and Twitter. Our seeds have germinated vigorously and are now being planted out along part of our sunny west wall. We have given St Wilfrid’s some as well. Sixteen Beaver Scouts were scheduled to visit the garden to pot up petunias and divide sedums. They were each being given a pot of petunias to take home. Our runner beans are romping up their poles and it looks
like being a good courgette season too. The tomatoes, chillies and peppers in the poly tunnel are promising a good harvest, Bob’s herbs and salad leaves are abundant and the new dry garden is coming on a treat (photo). It was all hands on deck the other day as all manner of plants were being potted on ready for sale. We are open from 9.30am to 12.30pm every Wednesday and on Saturday mornings from 10am until midday from 5th July until midSeptember, and expect to have an overflowing sales table of plants, fruits and vegetables. Drop in for a green welcome! The Garden Team Photo: James works on the new dry garden.
Seaford Food Swap Hoping for sunny weather, Seaford Community Garden, situated in the Crouch Gardens will be the new venue for the next food swap, on Saturday 26th July, 10am-12noon. Home produced items are viewed, sometimes sampled and then bids made to swap goods. No money changes hands, produce is the only currency. This is a social event that lasts for about two hours, and attracts a mix of people of all ages, genders and occupations. If you would like to be part of our next event book your place on seafordfoodswap.eventbrite. co.uk. There is no entry fee. Preparing for the Annual Show

After fourteen years some of the original trees have been lost due to the exposed site and weather conditions
th on
New society members and Seaford residents may not be aware of our contribution to Seaford’s celebration of the New Millennium. The Society wanted to contribute to the many forms of celebration being undertaken in Seaford at that time. After much deliberation our committee decided that we would organise, plan, design and landscape a celebration garden in the new extension to Seaford’s cemetery on Alfriston Road. Members of the committee undertook the work and with the help of Paradise Park Garden Centre trees, shrubs, bushes and flowers were included in the design along with several bench seats. A memorial plaque was placed on the leading knee rail next to the path which reads, “ This millennium garden has been dedicated to the residents of Seaford by the Seaford and District Horticultural Society” (photo).
but many of the original plants are still there and have matured well. The garden still provides a peaceful and tranquil place just to sit quietly and reflect upon loved ones and friends who are remembered in the cemetery. The Seaford and District Horticultural Society is proud to have been able to say “thank you” for all the support of its members and Seaford residents over many years.
The 112th Seaford Annual Horticultural Show for 2014 is on Saturday 9th August at the Seaford Head School in Arundel Road. The show is open to the public from 1.30 to 4pm. Exhibitors to the show should check staging times and show rules in the 2014 Programme & Show Schedule. Entry to the show in the afternoon is £1, however show exhibitors will be given a complementary pass. Whether you are an experienced show exhibitor or a new exhibitor you may like to note the following general advice. Show classes are not just for flowers, fruit and vegetables. They also include domestic produce, photography, arts and crafts, wines, flower arrangements and special classes for children. Most classes are for members but many are also “open” which means anyone may enter! If you are still growing sweet peas you need to “layer” the plants during July. Ask for advice or see our website (seafordhorti.com) for further details. Tomatoes and cucumbers should now be growing well. Feed twice a week with a tomato liquid fertilizer, check the need for water every day and watch out for white fly etc. Potatoes and carrots need to be “earthed up” to stop their tops going green. Cut the foliage tops off potatoes about a week before the show so their skins harden up. Note: All ground vegetables should be staged “clean”. That means that soil and roots should be washed carefully. They may be cut open by the judges for examination. More comprehensive hints and advice are given on pages 16–17 of the Society’s Programme and Show Schedule and on the Society website. Alternatively speak to any Society Committee member for general advice. Mike Parker

Seaford Gardening Club Well, there has been plenty of gardening to do recently due to longer and warmer days! Weeding, planting out and tidying up too, though it’s nice sometimes just to sit outside with a cuppa or a book and enjoy our gardens. Our speaker for May, Mr F G Albon, gave an interesting and informative talk entitled “The Galápagos Islands” (In the footsteps of Darwin). He began his talk by saying that as all gardeners work with nature he would read a gardener’s poem, based on the theme of “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, a hymn with which we are all familiar! In 1831 Darwin set out on HMS Beagle to explore the world for plants and other specimens. The Galápagos (which means “Saddle” because of its shape) are 600 miles from South America. Some parts of the islands are barren but as they house unique wildlife and vegetation visitors who land on the islands have their feet hosed down to prevent the spread of any infections. There is much to see when you eventually arrive despite the inquisitive sea lions! There are lizards, colourful crabs, sea turtles and many species of birds. A strict rule of
Green Waste Recycling Service
the islands is that you must not feed, disturb or harm any of the wild life. Environmentally, there are too many visitors to the islands but hopefully the 60,000 who visit each year respect the request. There is an abundance of birds that all have specific characteristics to their species! The frigatebirds (related to pelicans) can be a nuisance as they steal food and eggs from other birds. The blue-footed boobies are very skilled at diving and swimming underwater in search of their prey and the males display their feet in an elaborate mating ritual by lifting their feet up and down while strutting before the female! Mockingbirds build their nests, lined with cotton balls from the cotton bush, in trees and cacti. Although they can fly, they are known to be seen running around more than flying. There are also oyster catchers, flamingo, various ducks and the giant turtles (above) which fascinated Darwin so much, that he built a breeding centre for them. We were amazed at how much wildlife exists there. A very interesting talk delivered with knowledge, a sense of humour and an obvious love of this special place. The club does not meet in July and August so our next talk will be in September (details will be in the Seaford Scene’s September issue). More information on the club’s activities can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visiting www. seaford-sussex.co.uk/sac. There are a few seats remaining on our trip to Waddesdon Manor on 26th July, so please phone Anne for details – non members welcome.

The Synergy Theatre The Synergy Theatre is returning to The Crouch Gardens with its annual open-air Shakespeare production. This summer, we are delighted to be bringing you The Bard’s glorious comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Sir John Falstaff leads a life of wine, women and song! Constrained by his ever-dwindling fortune, Falstaff tries to persuade two wealthy women, Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, to hand over their husbands’ money along with their virtue! With mistaken identity, a laundry basket and a pair of antlers (don’t ask!), the scene is set for an evening of fun and merriment. In the midst of all the hilarity is Mistress Quickly, a housekeeper and sometime matchmaker, who has promised the Pages’ daughter, Anne, to any man who can pay her fees. Poor Anne simply wants to marry her true love, Fenton, and get far away from her meddling parents! Featuring Benedict O’Donohoe as Falstaff, alongside home-grown Seaford talent – including Peter Linsdell & Joshua Impey as Page and Ford – and joined by some of East Sussex’s finest actors, The Merry Wives of Windsor

French Twinning Group: Bastille Day Celebrations in Alfriston On Sunday 13th July we are planning our most ambitious event to date, so join us in Alfriston for a great day out with a difference. There will be four French-style attractions to enjoy from 11pm on The Tye and in the village hall. Café/Bar “La Guinguette” with Live Music We will be serving French wines, local beer, soft drinks and snacks in the Alfriston War Memorial Hall. Coffee and tasty French galettes, tarts and biscuits will be served from 11am and there will be some family activities with a French flavour between 11.30-1pm. At 1pm Inauguration aperitifs! The bar will open with French aperitifs and nibbles.
Les Guinguettes in France During the 19th century “les guinguettes” were popular destinations, especially on Sundays and holidays, for fun-loving Parisians who would seek out riverside bars in country villages and hamlets, to dance, bathe and go boating. Today, the term ‘guinguette’ is still used for a waterside refreshment place, particularly in the open-air, all over France. From 11am a French Market from Normandy: cheese, patisserie, charcuterie, hot and cold food, music and many more products. From 2-6pm Music Day: Fête de la Musique – Live music with French accordionist, Sylvie Meheurst (right), local group the Memphis Flyers, violinist Helen Browne and other professional and amateur musicians. La Fête de la Musique is an International Festival, which started in France in the eighties. It is a free popular event which aims to promote musical practice and exchanges between new performers and well-known talents. Bal-Musette/Village Dance/French Accordionist in “La Guinguette” Café/Bar 6pm onwards French style village entertainment, live music, Bal Musette/Dance. La Bal-musette in France. Admission to most bal-musettes was free, but dancers bought dance tokens at the cash-desk. These tokens were made of metal in various shapes with the name of the hall stamped on one side. By 1945, the bal-musette became the most popular style of dance in France and its biggest stars were widely known across the country. SEAFORD TREE wardens Group Street Trees – Why So Slow?
People often say to us tree wardens: “Why such a palaver to plant a tree in a verge? I can go out on a Saturday morning, buy a tree and plant it in my garden. Why is the whole thing so difficult?” The answer, alas, lies in the soil, or rather the soil as viewed by our legal system. What looks to you like a silent verge is actually a legal battlefield. The Highway Authority has most say in what happens – the Highways Acts say so. But it may surprise you to know that legally there could be in theory another owner of the ground under the road. Local Councils also have to approve, but beyond that we now have a gaggle of privatised utilities, each of which has its own equipment – pipes, copper cables, fibre-optics and you name it – to protect, without reference to others. Beyond that again, we have a new Big Brother in the shape of insurance liability, so that none of the people who can give permission wants to do anything that could risk liability in the future from ambulance-chasing lawyers. And, of course, there is Elf ’n’Safety – fine in moderation but... With time and goodwill, all these problems can be worked through, and our group has been able to help the residents of several streets to get their trees back. A more intractable problem is where the verge has been tarmaced, or too little space left. Here there would be no alternative to the actual authorities doing the work, involving quite large sums of money which are not available at present. We are much encouraged by support from residents, and we work for a brighter future. SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT Saturday 10th May 2014 St Leonard’s Church, Seaford
Dvorak’s Stabat Mater was conceived in sorrow following the death of a daughter, and completed soon after the loss of another daughter and a son. The Composer’s undoubted grief thus strikes a parallel with the suffering of the Virgin Mary at the loss of a child. This was the work chosen by the Seaford Choral Society for their Spring offering, and it also marked the final appearance of Sion Parry, who has been their Musical Director since 2008. Dvorak’s composition is a long work, comprising ten movements or sections, lasting over ninety minutes, and which calls for four soloists in addition to the choir. The Society was fortunate in securing the return of singers who had distinguished themselves at previous concerts, including Soprano Susanna Fairbairn, and Bass Thomas Faulkner. Both performed arias from Handel’s Messiah as a preliminary to the evening’s main work: Miss Fairbairn sang, “I know that my redeemer liveth” and Mr Faulkner, “Why do the nations?”
basses, and the lugubrious organ accompaniment, the choral sections of the work were rendered with attack and conviction. Of particular note were the soft choral entrance to Fac Ut Ardeat Cor Meum, the unison singing in Virgo Viginum Praeclara and the confident manner in which the choir dealt with the complex Amen fugue in the final Quando Corpus Morietur movement. Overall, the performance of the ladies and gentlemen of the choir was heartfelt and enthusiastic. Of the remaining two soloists, especial mention should be made of Alto Rebecca Anstey who brought sensitivity and beauty of tone to her solos, particularly in Inflammatus et Accensu. Tenor William Blake completed the quartet. The Society’s Autumn Concert will take place on 29th November and will feature Rutter’s Mass for Children’s Choir, while Haydn’s Creation will be performed at the Spring Concert on 2 May 2015. Between these dates the Society will host a Good Friday Come and Sing Faure Requiem on 3 April 2015. It is expected that the new Musical Director will be in place for these three events, and hopefully, by then, some of Seaford’s tenors and basses will have come forward to enhance the lower sections of the choir. Amfortas
Because of the limited space available for the required size of orchestra, an organ rather than an orchestral accompaniment was chosen to support the vocal line. Unfortunately, the instrument in St Leonard’s Church is not endowed with an opulent tone and could only provide an achromic backing to the singers despite the best efforts of Nicholas Milner-Gulland, the organist and the choir’s much appreciated rehearsal pianist. The Society has been trying to recruit more male singers, but in spite of the shortage of tenors and

We were quite busy in May. Firstly we refereed for the Annual Seahaven Lionesses Sports Tournament. This year it was on Saturday 17th May at the Downs Leisure Centre in the sports hall. We have supported this event for a few years now and every one of the events has been most enjoyable for us all. This was the first year that I have been unable to go. My many thanks go to all the Kurlers who did the refereeing. At the end of the evening the Lionesses presented our club with £70 for our club funds. We thank them very much for this. Some of us had a lovely day out on the 22nd May. We went by coach from the Downs Leisure Centre to the Bluebell Railway. We then travelled to East Grinstead on good old rolling stock pulled by a superb old steam engine. Some of us had done it all before but it is always worth repeating. We then returned to Sheffield Park Station to pick up the coach and continue on to Heaven Farm for one of their cream teas in the Stable Tea Rooms. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it. Well worth a visit if you have never been. Amongst other attractions there is a nature trail, a rural life museum and an organic farm shop. We then returned back to Seaford. All full up and quite tired. Our in-house annual competition finished on Tuesday 27th May at the Downs Leisure Centre. The winners for 2014/15 are Barbara Bradley and Tim Wood, the runners up are Molly Baker and Ian Leonard. Well done to all of them. The club shield will be engraved and will probably be presented to the recipients on 1st July, 2014. Seaford Kurlers meets every Tuesday at the Downs Leisure Centre from 2pm until 4pm.Visitors are welcome to come and see what the club is all about. We are an ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) group. Full details from Mrs June Wood, 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford BN25 3JS, email: sally1989@tiscali.co.uk

Diamond Jubilee Makeover for Litlington Village Hall The three villages of Litlington, West Dean and Lullington are delighted to have fulfilled one of the priorities set out in their 2009 Parish Plan. The result? An ambitious building project which has reinvigorated their 1950s Village Hall as the hub of this small rural community in the Cuckmere Valley. The project involved major ground works to create an outdoor seating area, direct access to their playground and new double doors, plus the rebuilding of a crumbling flint wall. Fantastic support, both financial and in kind, has helped make this idea a reality. Over £12,000
S. J. Hampton
has been raised through fundraising and donations in the parish, while more than 20 volunteers have given over 100 days in total towards the project. Capital grant aid of £16,500 was secured from the South Downs National Park’s Sustainable Communities Fund, The Veolia Environmental Trust’s Landfill Communities Fund, Wealden District Council’s Community Grant and Cuckmere Valley Parish Council. Villagers hosted a garden party on 10th May to open the project. Richard Mann, Trustee of the Hall and former Parish Council Chairman said, “This project has highlighted the wealth of talent and enthusiasm in this small community, and demonstrates what can be achieved by sheer dedication and hard work.” Looking ahead Litlington Village Hall is fit for purpose, providing a vibrant and financially viable focus for rural village life. It is in constant use by the thriving Kindergarten, clubs and activities, including pilates, yoga, sewing and the weekly coffee morning, as well as council meetings and private functions. Photos from top: Before – space no good to anyone, £30,000 later – a space for all to enjoy, villagers raise a glass!

Seaford Times As many of you may know, this year is the centenary of the First World War, known as the Great War.
On 28th. June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, by a group of Serb/Croats, under the banner of ‘The Black Hand’. A month later Austria declared war on Serbia, and because of international treaties, Russia, Germany and France were drawn into the confrontations. Germany then moved into Belgium, a neutral country, and Britain demanded they withdraw. Germany didn’t and Britain entered the Great War on 4th August 1914. You can view the timeline of WW1 on this website, http://www.historyonthenet.com/WW1/WW1_ timeline.htm
and obtain photographs of all the Seafordians that took part in those hostilities. So if any relation of yours, from Seaford, took part in this war, whether they survived or not, please consider sending in any photographs that you may have in your family albums of them, with a little information about their life in Seaford if possible. Ask your parents and grandparents if they have any photos tucked away somewhere. All those brave men and women involved in this war should be recognised. Seaford Times’ main objective is to have photographs of all the Seafordians, especially those that never made it back home. These are the men who have their names on our war memorial in Sutton Park Road. Seaford Times believes that we should not only know their names, but also see the faces of these brave men.
It is extremely interesting. There are many Seaford organisations preparing, in their own way, to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. Seaford Times is no exception. Our participation in this venture is to try

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB On May 15th the ever popular and highly talented Nel de Jong Smith came to demonstrate “Florabundance”. She also judged the monthly competition which five members had entered. Into a boat-shaped basket four wool-covered sticks were placed for masts and for the sails, orange gerbera, orange roses, dark blue siberica iris and aquilegia were used. She had previously made two further boats and together they made an amazing design. Then, using the first cut from a Yew tree trunk which had been screwed into a stand vertically, Nel wove wisteria and wild flowers over the top and at the base she arranged crimson celocia, dark red roses and mauve antirrhinums. Next came a tall black vase with a small opening, upon which ivy and arum pictum italica had been arranged and an interesting pleat of bear grass was plaited at the bottom to resemble fabric. To compliment this design, pink hellebore flowers and pink dendrochilum orchids hung down the length of the vase together with a wired aspidistra leaf which was manipulated to cover the mechanics. Next a vase was covered with Aspidistra leaves that had been left to dry to a soft golden brown which were tied at the neck with string. An Oasis dish was set inside and small pieces of foliage were placed in it. Dark red leucospurmum, fatsia leaves, variegated privet, purple tipped hebe, Tom Thumb pittosporum and hosta leaves finished the outline, and yellow carnations, orange lilies, chocolate anthuriums and a lemon cymbidimum orchid completed this glorious confection. A further two arrangements were made using Nel’s innovative designs and beautiful flowers ensuring that the flower raffle was well supported and it was pleasing that two of our visitors were winners of arrangements. On Thursday July 17th, Stephen Mc Donnell will demonstrate “Out of this World” and knowing Stephen, it promises to be an exhilarating meeting. On Thursday 21st August Margaret Williams’ demonstration will be entitled “Time after time” These meetings will be held at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Chyngton, Seaford (12a bus stops outside) 2pm for 2.30pm start. Visitors and former members will receive a warm welcome £4.50 to include refreshments. Art Students and Flower lovers of all ages are most welcome. Further details from Tina Bacon telephone 873162.

Rotary Club of Seaford
Blind Veteran Ray to be New President
The new President of the Rotary Club of Seaford will take office in July, adding to his existing role as President of Blind Veterans UK. He will be taking over from the current incumbent Michael Logan.
Ray Hazan, who was blinded, lost his right arm and suffered severe hearing loss in an IRA parcel bomb in 1973, says that he sees the role as challenging. He said, “It is a big responsibility, and quite a challenge, but I have plenty of support from fellow Rotarians. I would love to be different and add some new ideas while steering the current course. “Ray suffered his injuries on his second tour of duty in Northern Ireland and was helped by Blind Veterans UK. He joined a London Rotary club 20 years ago and then joined the Seaford club in 2011.

Ray was awarded an OBE in 2012 for his services to Blind Veterans UK and the blind community, and he was the subject of a BBC TV documentary in 1974, which followed his physical and emotional rehabilitation.
Bluebell Walk The Rotary Club of Seaford was again delighted to act as host over the weekend 17th and 18th May for visitors to Bates Green Farm for the annual Bluebell Walk.
Glorious weather enabled walkers and visitors to enjoy their last opportunity to wander the Arlington Woods at Bates Green Farm. Although the great swathes of blue had gone there were isolated patches of blue still flowering. Our visitors enjoyed the tranquillity of the woods, the wildlife and the opportunity to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, for some of our visitors it was their return visit. Thanks go to everybody who helped make the weekend a very pleasant and successful occasion, our cake bakers, catering and back up team and also non-Rotarians that helped with the chores – it really is a combined effort. It’s not usual to mention people by name but I think Bert is to be congratulated on his role as meeter and greeter on both Saturday and Sunday. He greeted all our guests with humour and real Rotary spirit and even entertained the children with little jokes on the bears and tigers hiding in the woods, and occasional ride on the scooters. As you are probably not aware what goes on when undertaking to run the weekend, the charity also has responsibility for everything else, the toilets, the floors, the disposal of rubbish etc. It is quite a task at the end of the day when everyone is weary! We are already in consultation with the farmer for 2015, and will do our best to negotiate another weekend slot, when the bluebells will be In full bloom.
Safety in Action
Between 19th and 23rd May, Safety in Action was held at Newhaven Fort, it is a week-long annual event jointly organised by Lewes District Council and Sussex Police. The event has been successfully running in the district for fourteen years and its aim is to give 10/11-year-old children basic skills and knowledge to help keep them safe.

During the week around 820 children attended from 25 primary schools. In teams they made their way around 10 different action stations, run by emergency services, volunteers, the local authority, and power and transport companies. The teams were given a score based on what they learnt from each scenario and team work. The winning school this year was Cradle Hill Primary School, Seaford, who will be awarded a trophy and prize money kindly donated by the Rotary Club of Seaford. Well done to all that attended and thank you to everyone that came to help.
Boot, Craft & Produce Fair
The May Rotary Club of Seaford Boot, Craft and Produce Fair took place as always at the Martello Fields in Seaford. What a difference the weather makes! After a dull and cold day in April, May’s Boot, Craft and Produce Fair benefitted from warm sunshine which brought in the stall holders and the public. We had over 50 stalls and ran out of our allocated spaces; even the car park was full! We raised a brilliant “bestever” of around £850 for charities and good causes.

Time & Time AgaiN Seaford Little Theatre
Apparently Alan Ayckbourn, surely one of our national treasures, wrote Time and Time Again in just six days in June 1971, directing it on the Scarborough stage the following month. Well, Sir Alan, having read a few of the fairly glowing reviews of the time, I can only think that there was something of The Emperor’s New Clothes about these critiques. The reviewers did, however, observe that this farce marked a turning point from the more conventional take on the genre to something much more thoughtful and ironic, and shortly afterwards Ayckbourn went on to write and direct the brilliant Absurd Person Singular followed by The Norman Conquests. Like these, Time and Time Again is a satirical study of bad behaviour, but due to the lapsed standard of this great playwright’s hasty script, the lines are awkward to speak and problematic to direct. So all credit to Seaford Little Theatre for rising to these challenges and presenting an amusing evening. Making his debut for the company, Adrian Bowd pulled this rather odd play together and made the most out of the clever set that he designed comprising conservatory, garden, pond and playing-field border fence – which unfortunately I had to guess at as I was sitting out of its sight and missed some entrances and exits. The story concerns an out-of-work much divorced school teacher who spends his time talking philosophically to a garden gnome while stealing someone else’s fiancée, who in turn is lusted after by his sister’s husband – look, it’s farce, you get the picture... Rob McLaren, in his second outing for Seaford, turns in a splendid performance as the apparently pathetic but inwardly scheming teacher, Leonard, showing good comic timing and agility – his overlarge trousers were a masterstroke. As chauvinistic pig Graham, Ian Clegg stole the show, ranging from dictatorial grouch to disgusting lech in the split seconds dictated by the sharp direction. His wife,
64
the down-trodden Anna, was played with spirit by Trich Richings, a mistress of the meaningful gesture and tonal variety. As Joan, Lindsey Holledge had to transform from a somewhat prim young woman to one who was prepared to two-time her man, and this she accomplished well. Her cuckolded fiancée, Peter, was played by James Meikle who effectively conveyed the difficulty of being employed by the lusty Graham and being too dense to see what Leonard was up to. The first act of this production was particularly funny, and would have been even more so if the players had reacted to the audience’s guffaws and allowed a pause before going into the next lines which could not always be heard owing to the laughter. Of course, Leonard’s shabby behaviour is uncovered at the end but the denouement comes as an anticlimax, leaving the play – no fault of the performers or their direction – to fizzle out. I look forward to the thriller Portrait of a Murder, opening on 25th July. Andrea Hargreaves Photos by Andrew Parkinson

Seeking Symmetrical Spuds By Julian O’Vegetables I’ve often thought of writing about food and the simple pleasure of sourcing, cooking and eating it. My wife reckons I’m more of a drinkie than a foodie, but I’m giving it a go just the same. I like food that is simple, quick to prepare and doesn’t cost a fortune. Spuds are a much underrated foodstuff. Cheap and cheerful, versatile and tasty, their countless varieties can be cooked and served in many different ways. One of my own favourites is the potato wedge. Not the bland kiddie-pleaser from the freezer, but big, full-on, spicy, colourful chunks of spud – crispy on the outside and fluffy within. The crispiness comes from the salt in the coating, colour and flavour comes from the paprika with its subtle smokiness and the spice comes from the cayenne pepper. Adjust the measures to suit yourself, or substitute chilli powder if you prefer this to the sharp heat of the pepper. They are the perfect accompaniment to steak, or just on their own with a late night beer in front of the telly. Do not apply ketchup or mayo. They are that good.

Potato Wedges for Grown-ups For two people: Two large baking spuds, chosen to my exacting requirements, see below*. One tablespoon of olive oil For the coating: Mix one teaspoon of salt, two teaspoons of paprika and a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. *Take the time to sort through the loose baking spuds in the supermarket and pick the biggest, roundest and most symmetrical ones you can find. Size is important as is shape here, so ignore the nobly ones. When ready to cook, wash away any loose dirt and on a chopping board, cut each spud lengthways down the middle. Lay each half flat side down on the chopping board and if you have picked well, you should be looking at two kind of elongated domes. Cut wedges by slicing each half lengthways at a 45 degree angle to the centre, then straight down, then at 45 degrees again. If you are skilful with your kitchen knife, you should have eight large wedges of equal size and all of your fingers present and correct. Put your wedges into a large saucepan and pour in the olive oil. Hold the lid firmly onto the pan and shake (the pan) vigorously. Then add the coating mixture. Repeat the vigorous shaking, remembering the firm grip on the lid. Place the wedges skin side down on a non-stick baking tray and put into a hot oven (200°C) for 45 minutes. Enjoy! On the morning of Saturday 3rd May there was a tantalising smell of bacon – it wafted along the lane outside St Leonard’s Church Hall – Inner Wheel was holding a Coffee Morning in aid of its charities. A bacon bap followed by a cup of coffee was on the menu. Customers could buy delicious homemade cakes, choose from a huge table of home grown plants, deck themselves out in jewellery, and buy books, gifts or expertly handmade crafts. In addition there was a chance to choose from a stock of previously owned outfits. The morning went with a swing and delighted customers left with their bags bulging with goodies – Inner Wheel had raised a staggering £466 for charity. Photo Andrea Batty & Jean Colwill
District Rally 168 members of Inner Wheel converged on Alfriston for their annual District Rally. The Rally is a chance to celebrate the ideals of the organisation with their current District Chairman and Association President. The weather was perfect for the occasion. During the service conducted by the Rev. Colin Pritchard there was a feeling of optimism in the air. Ann Thompson and Mary Morris read extracts from the Bible, with a flourish District Chairman Francoise lit the candle of friendship, and the choir and congregation excelled themselves with their singing. The day and setting were perfect for photography, here is District Chairman Francoise Cutts introducing her Club Presidents to Association President Gill Rowley. Running Commentary... The more you run, the more memory your legs will have. That may sound a strange way of describing how you retain the knowledge of all the running that you do, and one could say that it’s just another interpretation of the word – experience. That memory in your legs however, enables you to subconsciously know your different running speeds – your 5km pace and your ½ marathon pace, your uphill pace and downhill pace, and will consequently have a “game plan” for a particular race before you begin it. It can also act as a brake to stop you overdoing it, or empower you to set a PB. Many marathon runners experience real tiredness in the week before a marathon race but that’s just the body’s way of conserving energy in the expectation of the excessive demands that running a marathon will make. It is a subconscious act. To take up running is a positive step. To persist through those early days requires dogged determination, which is also positive. As you progress

from occasional to regular running; from one mile to five, ten and more, and from just running to competing, they are all positive acts, so the memory in your legs is built on positivity. The more years you keep running, the greater the library in your legs, which might explain why “older” runners seem to be able to handle adverse conditions in a race better than their younger, more spritely colleagues. A good test of the “memory” in your legs might be to see how you cope with the very tough conditions of our local Beachy Head Marathon. How do you handle the 20 significant climbs? Are they seen as 20 fantastic challenges to rise to and conquer? Or 20 soul-destroying barriers to wear you down? One viewpoint will inspire you to run well…the other will let you down.Your legs will get you round that difficult marathon course if you let them, because they are part of your mental strength. However, there are situations that can undermine even the most focused and resolute of runners. One that I found quite disruptive was in the original New Forest Marathon route, and it happened at the 20-mile point, when the runners had to go past the Hare & Hounds Inn. Picture a warm, sunny, autumn day and loads of people standing outside the pub, each with a cool pint of beer in one hand and a banquet in a bun in the other. Such sights and smells when runners are thirsty and hungry, have just run up a long drawn out hill and having been running for at least two hours, can seriously damage your rhythm and concentration. Running an ultra-marathon, especially for the first time, can really confuse the memory in your legs too. For instance, in the South Downs Way 80 miler, the 26mile point was a drinks station at Amberley, followed by a steep climb (which most runners walked) back up onto the South Downs again. My legs knew I’d done a marathon distance, had paused (for a drink) and then begun walking, (presumably back to my car)… just like at the end of all the other marathons I’d done but after I’d walked up most of the hill, I resumed running but it was as if my legs didn’t understand what I was doing. As far as they were concerned, I had finished my marathon so they had turned their memory switch to off. It must have taken a mile or so until it accepted I was running again and then kept me going to the finish. Look after your body, especially your legs. They know more than you think. Save Our Vanishing Grasslands Sussex Wildlife Trust is calling on Government to save remaining wildlife-rich grasslands and help farmers halt their “catastrophic” decline. A report published today by The Wildlife Trusts tells a story of devastating losses which is of deep concern. Sussex was once full of wildlife-rich grasslands, and for over fifty years Sussex Wildlife Trust has been battling hard to bring back some of this lost wildlife to the county by advising farmers, working with landowners and restoring flourishing grassland on its own nature reserves. This valuable habitat supports an array of wildlife in Sussex. Grasslands on the South Downs support the rare adonis blue butterfly and have an astonishingly rich variety of plants. These include special chalk grassland flowers such as orchids and also round-headed rampion, known as the “Pride of Susse” as its blue flowers are more common on the South Downs than anywhere else in Britain. Flower-rich grasslands are even rarer

in the Weald of Sussex, but you can still occasionally find old hay meadows covered in oxeye daisy, dyer’s greenweed and betony. Wildlife-rich grasslands also provide vital natural resources: for bees and other pollinators, and for an abundance of nature that depends on wild grasses and flowers. They also help protect our rivers from pollution, hold together healthy soils that store carbon and enable landscapes to retain water to reduce flooding. Dr Tony Whitbread, Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive, says, “Unfortunately wildlife-rich grasslands have been in trouble for decades, but our newly collated information makes for depressing reading. We’re seeing an insidious yet catastrophic decline. The pressures on these vital landscapes are enormous: from development and changes in agricultural practices, to deterioration and simple neglect. Valuable grasslands are vanishing at an alarming rate, and they will not survive without a long-term commitment, secure funding and effective regulation. We’re calling on Government to start working now with farmers, local authorities and nature organisations to ensure wildlife-rich grasslands don’t just fade away.” The Wildlife Trusts are launching an e-petition to “Save our Vanishing Grasslands,” which will be presented to Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Seahaven Para Games 2014 Call for Participants
S ki n & L as er C l i n i c
The London 2012 Paralympic Games were the most successful ever and the Seahaven Para Games has sought to continue the legacy by offering disabled residents in the community the opportunity to compete and participate on a level playing field in a range of activities. Following three successful years, Wave Leisure Trust (WLT) is delighted to confirm the launch of the 4th Seahaven Para Games due to be held on Sunday 10th August. For 2014, WLT has appointed transport partners and secured funding to be able to provide free transport for participants who need assistance in being able to attend the event. East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) Coaches and Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) will be managing transportation for the day. There is no cost for participants for the event or for transportation, as these games are funded by the Community Games initiative through Active Sussex, the Rotary Club of Seaford, Sainsbury’s (Newhaven Harbour) and the Wave Leisure Trust Inspiring Active Lifestyles Community Fund. The programme – running from 10am until 4pm – will include five sporting activities plus a buffet lunch. The activities will include archery, new age kurling, table tennis, boccia and the wheelchair slalom. The event this year is supported by Seaford Kurlers, Blind Veterans UK and Seaford Head Table Tennis Club. WLT is only able take a maximum of 40 participants on the day, and would request that participants, if required, must be accompanied by a carer at all times. Transport and transport support requirements can be booked at the time of registering. If you are interested in entering either as a team or as an individual please call 01323 493026 or email info@waveleisure.co.uk.

Seaford Hard of Hearing Club The Seaford Hard of Hearing Club are going strong. In May our speaker was Sue Jenkins, a local lass, who told us of her experiences in becoming a driver to the dignatories around London for the 2012 Olympics. Apparently when someone important was in her car the lights were all turned to green so she did not have to stop in London traffic. It would be nice to do that on a daily basis!
In June we heard from Dave Homewood, who brought along eight different types of gramophones dating from 1905 up to 1957. Dave explained the beginnings of the “music machines” from the cylinder type which were recorded on a very thick foil and only lasted for a few plays. Thirty cylinders were recorded at a time, so the muscians had to keep playing the same song until enough copies had been made. Dave advises us that Poundland has the best quality kitchen foil if you want to try this for yourselves. We then heard the first round flat record of a Caruso song which was the start of the modern records played until the late 1960s. This was also the first record to sell 1 million copies. The lip reading classes are very well attended and a valuable asset to the people of Seaford with hearing difficulties. If you would like to learn more about the Club or the classes please contact Pauline White on 01323 895216 or email white-c7@sky.com

Seaford Youth drama group Seaford Youth Drama Group are presenting their 30th anniversary production “The Rebels of East Street, Ragged School Seaford 1911”. The way children were taught in the early 20th century was very different from today. This is a satirical glimpse at schooling and the times. Seaford Youth Drama Group was started in 1984 to encourage young people to express themselves in a constructive, creative way learning communication skills to build self and group awareness, as well as the skills and technique needed for drama and hopefully a life long love of theatre. Hundreds of wonderful young people have had this opportunity and Seaford Youth Drama Group has earned a reputation for its professional training and entertainment – much of the work presented is new. Students take part in street theatre,The Eastbourne Festival, harity events, plays in a theatre and LAMDA exams can be taken. Many past students are using their skills in professional theatre, in films and television, as drama teachers and in affiliated careers. A couple are in the National Youth Theatre. It has been a privilege to teach so many creative, interesting and amazing young people and what fun we have all had. East Blatchington Lectures The next in the series of East Blatchington Lectures will be on Tuesday, July 1st and has the intriguing title “Reel to Real Heroes”. That is not a spelling mistake, because the talk is about actors at war, and in particular the propaganda films which were made during the Second World War. It will be given by Karen McCreedy, a keen student of films, and a prolific writer for various publications. Her subjects will include such productions as “F for Freddie” and “Went the Day Well?” (right), which played their parts in Britain’s film industry during the war. The chances are she will also make mention of one particularly favourite star, James Stewart, who had a distinguished flying career during the war, seeing action in England and on the continent. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and also the Croix de Guerre. Karen’s talk will be illustrated by stills from various films. As usual, this will be at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, and is open to everyone. It starts at 2.30pm. Tickets are £5, including refreshments, available on the door, or from the Seaford estate agents Newberry Tully. The last lecture in this popular series promises to be the biggest attraction – it will be given on Tuesday, August 5th, by Simon Brett, the author whose 80 books include the popular comedy detective tales and Radio 4 series featuring the usually struggling actor Charles Paris. Because of the success of the Lectures, it is important that people buy tickets in advance or, at the very least, make sure they arrive much before the starting time of 2.30pm to be sure of a place.

Seaford’s Hidden Gem Hidden behind the crumbling frontage of the old W.D. Rolf and sons Fish Shop on High Street in Seaford there is a fascinating jewellery workshop. The proprietor is Sam Le Prevost, a professional jeweller, works to special commission, loves solving technical problems and particularly enjoys teaching and enhancing jewellery skills. He has taught jewellery classes for many other jewellers, and since 2008 has also made regular trips to Northern Afghanistan and latterly, India, to help Afghan jewellers set up training and resource centres and run master classes to improve their work to export quality. Sam found it really interesting to work with the Afghan jewellers, to share techniques and to find ways to communicate with only a limited vocabulary. Due to the security situation, it became more difficult to visit and Sam hopes to be able to go back in the future. Now Sam has built a specialised teaching workshop, bringing together elements from all of the places that he has worked, and using his own ideas to make the perfect environment for students to learn and flourish. Sam says, “The idea of the jewellery classes is that they should be interesting, creative and productive. Fun too. I’ve taught students aged from eight to eighty-plus and from a wide
range of backgrounds. Whether they come to learn a skill, improve the skills they have, or to balance out a hectic office-based job with some creative, hands-on studies, I make sure that they get the most out of the classes.”. New students to the jewellery class start learning with a first project of making a plain ring, then setting a stone. This introduces many of the basic techniques. Students are then encouraged to make whatever they like. If inspiration is ever lacking, inspiration will be given: through short talks, demonstrations of tools and techniques, and through the general creative buzz of the group. There are also set projects in order to learn specialised techniques. In Sam’s experience the students quickly get to know each other and the atmosphere is very friendly. Courses run alongside the school term. For more information and prices please contact Sam and visit the website leprevosst.co.uk 37 High Street, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 1PL Tel: 07952 195341 Email: info@leprevost.co.uk

Step-parents and Parental Responsibility What is it? Who has it? Who can acquire it? In my last previous article on this subject I looked at the role of step-parents and, more importantly, their legal status. To recap, a step-parent doesn’t typically have any ‘custody’ rights to stepchildren and therefore their powers are limited in respect of their step children. I gave the following example of where the legal status of a step parent could be an issue.... You have recently married your spouse who has two children, Lily and Harry. Your spouse is at brownie camp with Lily for a few days leaving you to care for Harry at home. Harry is out playing football with his mates at the park. You get a visit from a police officer who tells you that Harry has been in a fight and has harmed another boy. He is also injured and has been taken to hospital in an ambulance. He needs an operation on his broken jaw and the police also want to question him further about his behaviour. You cannot get hold of Harry’s mother or his biological father. What do you do and more importantly what are you allowed to do? The answer lies in whether you have ‘Parental Responsibility’ or not. In short, you cannot give consent for any medical treatment to be carried out on Harry, nor can you accompany him whilst being questioned by the police. This can only come from someone who has parental responsibility.
Remember, an unmarried partner is not legally a stepparent.
Can a step-parent acquire Parental Responsibility? A step-parent can only acquire parental responsibility for a child in very specific circumstances including: When the court makes a Child Arrangements Order that the child lives with the step-parent either on their own or with another person. However these types of ‘step parent’ orders are uncommon. When the step-parent adopts a child which puts him/her in the same position as a birth parent. Through the signing of a Parental Responsibility Agreement to which all other people with Parental Responsibility consent. This is a formal document which needs to be signed by all the parties and then registered at court. When the court has made a Parental Responsibility Order following an application by the step-parent.
• • • •
On acquiring parental responsibility, a step-parent has the same duties and responsibilities as a natural parent.
I am always surprised at just how little Parental Responsibility Agreements are used and can only assume that step-parents are not aware of them and just What is Parental Responsibility? Remembrance Service held for former mayor
chores and more
A service was held at Cross Way Church, Seaford on Sunday 11th May to celebrate the life of former Mayor, Ken Davies. Ken moved to Seaford in 1994 from Frimley, Surrey, where he had been a lecturer at Farnborough College of Technology. Joining Seahaven RAFA he served as Secretary, Wings Officer, Vice-Chairman and Chairman over the years. He worked tirelessly when collecting for Wings, raising hundreds of pounds each year. He joined St James’ Trust, running the tea room at the Old Town Hall. He also worked at the headquarters in Blatchington Road, where he served on the committee and eventually became chairman. When the Seniors’ Forum was founded, Ken became an expert at recruiting new members! He was also a founder-member of Sussex Retired Teachers. He also belonged to the Photographic Club, Stamp Club, Crouch Bowls and the Over 50s Art Group. In 2010 Ken was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis – a terminal condition – but he continued to enjoy life where possible. At the time of his death he was president of the Retired Teachers and Chairman of Seahaven RAFA.

Service to RemeMber On the 3rd of August 1914 people held their breath waiting to hear the news that Britain would be at war. A hundred years on, one way or another, all of us live with the effects of that conflict, and nearly everyone in the UK has an ancestor directly affected by the First World War. During this one hundredth anniversary year, churches and the Royal British Legion will be commemorating and remembering those who lived, fought and gave their lives in service and duty to our country. A hundred years on, on the 3rd of August 2014, a Service to Remember will be held at St Leonard’s Church, Seaford, at 6pm, where we can gather as a community to play our part in this country-wide act of marking, remembering, and giving thanks for all the sacrifices of that generation. Sadly WWI was not “the war to end all wars” and our country only experienced a brief time of peace before WWII broke out. We may not be at war today but our armed forces continue to serve across the world. War it seems, is part of life, and in every generation men and women sacrifice their “tomorrow” so others can have a “today’.” It is right that we mark their sacrifices and remember them, for as the closing words in John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields” reminds us,
To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields.

Seahaven Lioness Club After a couple of busy months of fundraising, which is still ongoing of course, the Lionesses have enjoyed being in a position to make donations to several local organisations. At the Club meeting on 13th May, a cheque for £500 was presented to Richard Lintott of Brighton Lions Club for Leo House Children’s Hospice (www.leohouse.org. uk), Richard is a Trustee of Leo House, a charity set up by Brighton Lions to give care and support to children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and their families, and the money was raised through the Barn Dance organised by the Lionesses earlier this year. On Wednesday May 21st, a group of Lionesses visited Newhaven Ambulance Station to present a batch of teddies to the ambulance crews. These are carried on the ambulances and given to any sick or injured children the crews have to pick up and are much appreciated. On Sunday May 25th four Lionesses were welcomed by the Newhaven Lifeboat crew to their base on the quay at Newhaven, where a cheque for £300 was presented, this being the proceeds of a Lucky Receipt Draw at Sainsbury’s at the end of March. In the early months of the year Lionesses are to be found busily sowing seeds, potting on plug plants and taking cuttings ready for our plants sales in May. This year they took a plant stall for the first time to the Meridian Centre mini-market on 20th May, then to Broad Street, Seaford on the Saturday and, as there were still quite a few nice plants left, again on the 31st. The three stalls made a

A new path forward on adapting to climate change in Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes Communities in Seaford and the lower Ouse Valley are set to get on the right track in adapting to climate change following the opening of an innovative new trail in East Sussex. On Thursday 19th June, the Environment Agency and members of the Coastal Futures Group will formally open the “Waking up to tomorrow” climate trail at South Downs Youth Hostel, Southease at 4.15 pm. The trail connects Seaford Esplanade, Tide Mills, Newhaven’s West Quay, the Youth Hostel at Southease and the Linklater Pavilion in Lewes. An illustrated panel at each of these locations highlights future challenges and historical problems posed by our changing environment whilst explaining the potential adaptations to climate change for that area. They explore the effects of sea level rise, increasing

temperature, more intense rainfall and higher storm surges. The five panels are all on, or close to, the well marked Sussex Ouse Valley Way, connecting them on a 12.5 mile walking route. The Environment Agency is lead partner in the Coastal Communities 2150 Project (CC2150) which helps communities get better prepared for the impacts of climate change over the next 150 years. Over 1,600 homes and 700 commercial properties are currently at risk of flooding in Seaford and the lower Ouse valley. Future climate change will make these communities more difficult to protect. John Gower, CC2150 Project Manager for the Environment Agency, said: “Our coast around South East England is changing and we all must be prepared for the future effects of climate change. “The Climate Trail is a great way of allowing people to explore these long-term changes to their landscape and the effect on the communities that live there. It will provide a lasting legacy from CC2150 to educate present and future generations on the need for adaptation. “By working together with communities in Seaford, Newhaven, Lewes and the surrounding parishes CC2150 has shown how communities can contribute to managing their flood risk and their local environment in the future.” These communities have already been involved in shaping their futures with the formation of Coastal Futures Group in January 2012. The group worked with the Environment Agency on a vision and action plan, ‘Waking up to tomorrow’, to meet the challenges identified for the lower Ouse valley and coastal areas. The community vision and action plan is the first of its kind and will be launched with the Climate Trail as a guide to taking practical action to adapt now. On Monday 7th July, the Coastal Futures Group is holding an interest evening to find new members at the Hillcrest Centre, Newhaven (6pm to 8pm). People are invited to join for a two-year programme helping to deliver the action plan. Meetings will be held 4 times each year in the Newhaven, Seaford and Lewes area. OPENING OF THE EGRET’S WAY, OUSE VALLEY CYCLE NETWORK Disabled Ramblers were asked back in 2012 to support the Ouse Valley Cycle Network (OVCN) in their efforts to establish a link between the villages of Southease and Rodmell. Val Rawlings and Sheila Matthews of Sussex Roamability, went to see Neville Harrison the Chair of the OVCN and accordingly wrote a letter of support. Two years later it was a pleasure, therefore, to go in June, to the opening of the new pathway which has now been established and which links those two villages. It passes through beautiful scenery alongside the River Ouse, and at present ceases at the lovely village of Rodmell where we ended up at Monk’s House – a National Trust property which was the country retreat of Virginia Woolf, the novelist, and where she composed much of her best known works. There we had juice, and delicious cup cakes, generously supplied by the local hostelry, the Abergavenny Arms, in the peaceful and wild garden of Monk’s House. OVCN now hopes to finish the final section of the network from Rodmell onto Lewes to make the link between Newhaven and Lewes complete. The pathway is intended to be used by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and of course – those on mobility scooters. Two scooters came and generated much interest from everyone. Two horse riders also attended with a big crowd of cyclists and walkers. A really good community spirit was evident and we had a very interesting and fruitful day. The National Trust are very interested in opening their properties that have trails to disabled ramblers, and from attending this opening of Egret’s Way we have made a link with the National Trust at Bateman’s where Rudyard Kipling lived. We hope to pursue this and visit with a view to advising on the trails and tracks there. A lot of work has gone into the planning and obtaining of the funding for this path and it is very rewarding to see it all come to a satisfactory conclusion. From this the Regional Group in Hampshire intend to put on a ramble during the summer to visit this pathway. Sheila Matthews, Sussexroamability Tel: 01323 892647
