cHRISTMAS LATE NIGHT SHOPPING Christmas Late Night Shopping on the 2nd December was deemed a success with a bit of something for everyone. Mayor Linda Wallraven and Father Christmas turned the lights on at 5.30 pm outside Barclays Bank in Broad Street; in the company of Norman Baker MP. In the absence of Seaford’s Town Crier, Jon Borthwick from Peacehaven announced the proceedings. Live entertainment from the Archway Choir, Seaford Musical Theatre (juniors and seniors) and the child violinists from the ESCC Music Service were well received by a large crowd. Jimmy the Juggling Jester (courtesy of Toytown) entertained the children in the High Street with his juggling of everything from diablos to knives, together with his fire display. The next performance from Rick Sharpe and Nicki Day was unfortunately cut short due to a rain shower. This did not deter the Pentacle Drummers, who played a powerful set as a climax to the evening.

The best-dressed window display was won by Millies, with Ambers, Housemartins, Chatfields and the Retro Market highly commended. Fancy dress was won by Huckleberrys with Ambers, the Retro Market and Whistles, highly commended. A big thank you to Redgolds Opticians, Chatfields Jewellers, Swindells Accountants and Pomegranite for their kind donations towards the Christmas lights. Recognition also to The Hub, V R Flowers, Seaford Home Hardware and Toytown for sponsoring the Christmas flyers. Appreciation is also given to Physio Footprint and Barclays Bank for providing the power to the PA system on the night. Thank you also to the traders who provided a tombola prize to the Chamber of Commerce stall.

The infamous chowder from Paul’s Plaice was a sell-out. The Paella Party, Seaford Downs Syndrome & Special Needs Support together with the Twinning Association provided refreshments. The Broad Street businesses commented that it was a great atmosphere, largely the shops were busy and takings were good. A big thank you to everyone who took part with a special mention to AB Event Solutions who provided the PA equipment and the technical support.. £236 was raised for the Mayor’s Charity, WAVES Family Support Service.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION FUNDRAISING 2011 In June 2011, a Tea Dance was held at Seaford Legion Club. Many cakes were made by members, and Morrisons also supplied some. The superb raffle prizes donated by many of the town’s shopkeepers were eagerly sought after and raised £245. Many members rekindled their dancing days to the 40s style music. Also in June the Branch stall at Armed Forces Day on the Martello Fields was well supported. The Society of St.George added £150 for the day. Mais House in Bexhill is a Legion home giving permanent residency for those in need of care, and a break centre giving respite for spouses and carers too. We attended this annual fund-raising event to help promote their effort, and last year it was opened by Graham Norton. A member, Eon Matthews, completed the annual Legion 'Pedal to Paris', cycled over four days. Each cyclist has the aim of raising one thousand pounds through sponsorship. Starting in London, the video presentation made many of us puff! Donkey Derby saw the stall erected yet again, raising more funds for the Poppy Appeal, all of which goes to Legion welfare work. The sponsored Poppy Walk raised £3,000 of welfare funds, in conjunction with many Sussex Legion Branches, to be used in the county, and is administered by a dedicated team at the Haywards Heath county office. Not only raising funds, this walk gives the walkers both exercise and appreciation of the views, and the dogs came to. After all this effort during the year, it was then Remembrance time, for which the Poppy is most well known. In fact, ‘Remembrance time’ is fund-raised throughout the year as collecting boxes can be found in shops, restaurants, pubs and in schools. At school, children learn what Remembrance means. With the ongoing conflicts, the work of the Legion is in demand as much as it ever was, supporting those suffering injury and mental stress, and their families and dependents.

FAIRTRADE cELEBRATES SIx YEARS IN SEAFORD It’s six years since a small group of pioneers met in the Little Theatre to talk about setting up a Fairtrade Group in Seaford. The group will return to the Little Theatre on Tuesday 17 January to hold its Annual Meeting. Much has been achieved over the last six years: many more businesses are selling Fairtrade goods; a wider range of Fairtrade goods is available in shops; schools teach their pupils about Fairtrade, and Seaford has been officially recognised as a Fairtrade Town. So what is Fairtrade all about? It’s about guaranteeing producers, mainly in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, a fair price for their goods. It’s about giving producers a Fairtrade premium, which they can spend in their local communities on projects such as providing a water supply or building a school. And it’s about increasing awareness, here in Seaford, about how and where the goods we use are produced. Fairtrade goods can be identified because they carry the blue, black and green Fairtrade logo, of a person raising an arm and scattering seed. The logo shows that the product has been approved by the Fairtrade Foundation, a charity which looks at the conditions under which it has been produced and guarantees the price for which it is bought.

This is a financial co-operative, set up by a group of Fairtrade pioneers, which lends money to farmers and handicraft makers in the developing world. Those present will also enjoy a glass or two of Fairtrade wine!

A RESOLUTION WORTH KEEPING Fiona Dodd, Mayo Wynne Baxter

Making a Will sits high on the nation’s static to-do-list, yet it’s a rare New Year’s resolution, despite taking just an hour to complete. 66 per cent of the population do not have a Will, but 100 per cent are likely to die within the next 110 years. Without a Will the law decides who inherits what, and who must sort it all out. That person is liable for any mistakes. As well as preventing this, making a Will is the only way parents can control guardianship of their children. A survey of 2011 New Year resolutions found the top ten: 1. Lose weight – 24% 2. Drink less alcohol – 19% 3. Join a gym -14% 4. Quit smoking – 11% 5. See friends & family more - 8%

6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Change job - 6% Commit to a relationship – 4% Save money for a house or car – 3% Worry less – 2% Be spontaneous – 1%

Making a Will won’t help you lose weight or change job, but it protects people you love and reduces a big worry, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying life.

Mayo Wynne Baxter is now offering another reason to write a Will. We are donating £25 to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice for every Will we write. Visit www.family-footprints.co.uk or call 0800 84 94 101.

Family Footprints From only £150, make a Will and secure your family’s legacy. For every Will written we are donating £25 to Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Call 0800 84 94 101 for more information www.family-footprints.co.uk 14

REOPENING OF THE RADIO ROOM AT SEAFORD MUSEUM The museum’s Radio Room is back in business. After almost a year of extremely hard work by the backroom volunteers, it has been extensively remodelled, re-researched and on December 3rd reopened. In fact, it now deserves a more all-embracing description. It presents a graphical historical record of sound and vision in home entertainment over more than a hundred years, from the recorded sounds and magic lantern shows of the late 21st century to the iPods and digital television and radio broadcasting of the early 21st century. Appropriately, the reopening was performed by a local television personality, Natalie Graham, a BBC ‘SouthEast Today’ and Inside Out reporter and presenter, who lives in Seaford and is a museum member. The actual unveiling ceremony was delegated to and performed enthusiastically by her children, Tom and Katie! Among other notable museum supporters at the event was the Mayor of Seaford, Linda Wallraven. They were all welcomed by chairman Kay Turvey, who referred to the very hard work put into the project by many people. She made special mention of Charles Painter, the deputy chairman, who had made a great contribution but was unable to attend the ceremony because of illness. Natalie Graham, in declaring the refurbished Radio Room open, added the chairman herself to the list of those deserving of special praise for her commitment to the undertaking. Photos top: Natalie Graham, daughter Katie and Chairman, Kay Turvey. Below: The new Radio Room.

Seaford Natural HiStory Society All the best for 2012 from Seaford Natural History Society – we look forward to seeing current and new members in the New Year. We are a friendly group of people with an interest in wildlife, and particularly the plants and animals of East Sussex. In the winter, we arrange illustrated talks, usually on local flora and fauna but on 17 January we are ranging further afield with a session on endangered wildlife in Borneo. We return to local matters with a session on Sussex seabirds on 7th February. See the listing at the back of Seaford Scene for dates and details. Visitors are welcome – we ask for a donation of £3 (which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society). In the spring, summer and autumn, we arrange outdoor meetings, usually gentle strolls of around two hours. All are welcome but this year we are keen to recruit people who are happy to lead walks so do get in touch if you think you have something to offer. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964. Out and about in January: Birds in Cuckmere Haven Cuckmere Haven offers lots of opportunities to see birds at this time of the year. One of the most striking ornithological features of the western side is the vast accumulation of Great Black-backed Gulls which gather in the meadow half way down the valley and a careful search will probably also reveal the presence of a few of the smaller and greyer Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Further on towards the sea, the drainage ditches usually hold large numbers of Little Egrets and Grey Herons while the meadows anywhere in the lower valley will almost certainly contain ducks such as Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard and Shoveler, as wells as Lapwing, and Canada and Greylag Geese. The lucky observer may see a Kingfisher in the wide drainage channel at the bottom of the valley by the Coastguard Cottages while Rock Pipits are almost certain around the mouth of the river. Walking along the river bank, (often very muddy in winter), keep an eye open for Redshank, Curlew and Dunlin in the main channel while there is always the chance of flushing a Green Sandpiper from the ditches on the left of the path. On the eastern path you are certain to see Little Grebe on the meander. Stonechats, Goldfinches, Meadow Pipits

16

and Reed Buntings are also fairly likely at the seaward end of the valley although birder’s tales of Jack Snipe should be treated with caution. Finally, on the beach it is always worth looking up towards the cliffs in the hope of spotting a Peregrine although any sudden explosion of birds into the air should alert observers to the possible presence of one of these powerful master hunters or the smaller (and much less regular) Merlin. (With grateful thanks to Bob Self for the section on birds.)

SEAFORD cITIZENS ADvIcE BUREAU GETS FUNDING It’s business as usual at Seaford Citizens Advice Bureau after Seaford Town Council agreed a grant of £3,500 at its October meeting. The grant for 2011/12 has enabled the bureau to reinstate all-day opening on Fridays and extend the Tuesday service to receive drop-in callers as well as give telephone advice. Commented Councillor Ian White, Leader of Seaford Town Council, “Seaford Town Council is pleased to support the CAB and has shown this by increasing its grant this year. The Council supports the CAB's efforts to recruit more volunteers and hopes that they will be successful, to enable them to continue their valued work.” Said CAB District Manager, Jackie Wilkes, “Whilst I am delighted with this outcome, we really need to recruit some new advisers, especially at the Seaford Bureau, as some of our volunteers went on to other things when we were forced reduce our opening times. I would like to encourage people who may be interested in training but who aren’t sure whether they have the appropriate skills to pick up the phone, as the rewards of being a CAB Adviser are well worth the time it takes to train.” To become a CAB adviser you do not need any previous qualifications, skills or experience, just an open mind and a desire to help people, basic computer skills and six free hours a week. Full training is provided, but contrary to what you might think, Advisers don’t need to know it all as the information is available on the bureau’s electronic information system and in standard reference books. Amongst other things, the training covers interviewing, questioning and listening techniques, researching information on the electronic information database and recording client details on the case management system. In general, it takes volunteers about six months before they start interviewing clients on their own, but always with a supportive team of advisers on hand to help. The CAB certificate in generalist advice work is equivalent to NVQ level 3 and nearly one-third of volunteers go on to full-time education or employment. It will be no surprise that the Bureau has seen an increase in employment enquiries over recent months but it is very fortunate to have the services of a volunteer employment specialist.

18

In one case a client who was suffering from HIV found that he was getting nowhere despite many frustrating meetings with HR, occupational health and senior management at the multi-national company where he worked. After intervention from the CAB employment specialist it transpired that the employer had been wrongly advised. As a result, the client was saved the trauma of attending a tribunal and the taxpayer was saved the costs of tribunal and benefits. As well as the appreciation of both client and employer, the CAB adviser has the satisfaction of knowing his time has been well spent and the accolade of being asked to give a talk about his work at the Terrence Higgins Trust in Brighton. If you are interested in training to become an adviser at Seaford or Lewes CAB, please phone Sarah on 01323 896209 (Seaford) or Sally on 01273 473082 (Lewes) for an informal chat.

FRIENDS OF SEAFORD LIBRARY’S AGM The Friends of Seaford Library held their 11th AGM on Friday 28th October at St Peters Church Hall. Our Patron Norman Baker MP and Minister of Transport attended as did Councillor Carolyn Lambert and leader of the Seaford Town Council Ian White. There were also other members of the council there and at least a third of the membership. The hall was packed. Norman Baker explained to the meeting how things were going and that he had spoken to Dr Irene Campbell, Head of Library Services and progress was being made. Norman was thanked by Shirley for his loyal support over the years. Peter James, our other patron, was also thanked because every year he has sent us a signed copy of his latest book. This year he has won the Golden Dagger Award. The meeting went well and Shirley Linsell as Chairman explained that things were at a slight standstill. She felt the library would not move until next year as there were the planning stages to go through. Craftstone A5 2009

The new committee was then elected: Anne Ford Smith, Jennifer Moriarty, Susan Shepherd, Elizabeth Woodruff and Barry Hoad. Roy Linsell, Treasurer, retired due to his failing eyesight and Shirley thanked him for all his hard work. Originally, he had offered to do the job for six months and ended up staying on for six years! Doreen James, Minute Secretary, retired as she was only there as a favour to Shirley. Shirley Linsell announced her retirement as she felt the committee needed a new leader to take them forward. Norman Baker thanked Shirley in his address, as did Carolyn Lambert and Ian White. The committee presented Shirley with a beautiful bouquet. The new team also had several volunteers joining them which was very encouraging. After the meeting, an excellent quiz took place devised by Jennifer Moriarty. There was also wine and nibbles provided by the committee. Shirley wishes to say she is sad to leave but after eight years plus, it is time to move on. She thanks the team that has been behind her. A special mention to Maureen and Derek Welfare for all the years they have put in serving the drinks and nibbles.

CARPET & UPHOLSTERY CLEANING

Saturday 3rd December 2011 St Leonard’s Church, Seaford

Professional and Reliable Service for Domestic and Residential Properties

l

Gareth Malone and the ‘Military Wives’ have shown us the importance which singing can make to the heart of a community, and last night’s concert by the Seaford Choral Society, performed to a packed audience, showed the significance of this choir to its town community.

Fully Qualified and Trained by The British Institute of Cleaning Science & Security Industry Authority

l

Under the able baton of musical director Sion Parry, the choir presented a selection of crowdpleasing favourites. The concert opened with Puccini’s youthful Messa di Gloria, which offers tantalising hints of the mature operas the composer was to go on to write. The choir captured equally the drama and the reverence of the music, wonderfully supported by the sensitive accompanying of Nick Houghton on the organ. The vocal soloists joining the choir for the concert were Gary Marriott (tenor) and Stephen Charlesworth (baritone): these are two professionals who always completely enhance a performance with their musicianship, excellent diction and projection of personality, and their performance of Bizet’s ‘Au fond du temple’ from The Pearl Fishers brought the house down! The second half of this musical ‘Box of Delights’ ranged from Adolphe Adam’s ‘O Holy Night’ of 1847, and the wonderfully Victorian ‘The Holy City’ written in 1892, to Stanford’s ‘Songs of the Fleet’ from 1910. The choir captured that sense of Edwardian vigour most effectively, and Seaford seemed a perfect location for this evocation of the nation’s naval heritage. The choir remains very much at the heart of this community, and justifiably so. Jane Pendry The post-concert collection in aid of local registered (No 1118771) charity Waves - which provides practical help for families in need in Seaford - raised £485. For more information about Waves please visit www.wavesseaford.org.uk

LIvING AT cUckMERE HAvEN

Part 5

Happy New Year, one and all! I like to take the beginning of a new year to reflect on what I want to have more/ less of in my life. I’m not a big fan of ‘resolutions’ though, they sound too much like they’re made to be broken! What I tend to prefer is dreaming about the kind of life activities/adventures/experiences that feel fun and exciting. This is our annual creativity fest and Robb and I get really into it. Looking back through some old journals, we were amazed to come across some of our ‘wishes’ from a few years ago: “We’d like to live in a beautiful country cottage with access to the sea (for me) and woodland (for Robb); we’d like to spend more time together and work together; we’d both like more time to pursue creative ventures”…and more. All of these things have come to pass. Robb and I have been doing this for many years and we have always found that writing down exactly what it is we want helps us to make it happen. Sometimes we write a very clear list and then forget about it, only to discover it down the line – as we did with our ‘Cuckmere’ list. Indeed, be careful what you wish for! In late November, Robb and I were discussing the fact that we were relying on the car too much, and how interesting (hypothetically) it would be if we could do without it, as we had done when we first lived at Stanmer. On a trip to see my mother-in-law in Kent, the brakes on our dear old Renault gave up and it needed an emergency stay at the garage. Whilst they were investigating, Robb and I had several weeks at Cuckmere without a car. It proved both challenging and illuminating. When we ran out of gas for our little gas hob, Robb packed the empty bottle into our travelling rucksack and we set off along the river to catch a bus. I did the week’s shopping in Seaford whilst Robb went to Newhaven to get the gas bottle re-filled (heavy!). Then we got back on the bus and walked back to the cottage along the Vanguard Way. We got some strange looks from dog-walkers, as we were literally laden down with rucksacks and shopping bags, and our arms and shoulders certainly got a work-out! What would have taken an hour if we’d had a car had taken up most of the day and it was already getting dark

32

by the time we got home. Slowing down isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however; on our trips we’ve bumped into people we would normally have whizzed past in the car, we’ve ambled along together chatting and had time to notice the world around us. Most of the time, we’ve cycled to Seaford station and the bus stop and cycling up the track has ensured we’re fitter than we were before. Our car is able to totter about locally but, sadly, her days are numbered and we’re looking about for a new one. What will I take from our car-free weeks? Several evenings when I was cycling home and I crested the hill, Cuckmere opened up like a magical moonlit kingdom below and took my breath away. The realisation that we can probably reduce a lot of the car journeys we take, and use the bike or walk instead. And a huge sense of gratitude when we do get in the car on a rainy day – I won’t take it for granted again! It’s almost worth not having something to experience the joy of having it. This was the case when Robb and dear Daniel got the wind turbine and solar power hooked up to the batteries and we suddenly had…. POWER!! Cue much whooping and leaping about and charging of phones and the real treat of cosying up to watch a film on the lap-top. I woke up the next morning with a Boxing Day-esque sense of excitement and yes, there was still power! It’s not perfect and definitely still needs some tweaking but we have enough to charge our phones and run the laptop – candlelight still magical in the evenings. Windy days are no longer a frustration, but a source of much rejoicing. What we’ve learnt this month: never take anything for granted, enjoy all the little things and be careful what you wish for! Lucy Corkhill Photo: Seven Sisters on a winter’s morning by Robb Cunningham.

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museums’s vast diverse collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which will identify it at the museum. The Swivel Gun Swivel guns were also known as ‘Versos’ and were made by strips of wrought iron held together by iron rings. They were often made by coopers (barrel makers), which is why it is called the ‘barrel’ of a gun. Swivel guns were mounted on a pivot and had a wide arc of fire – similar to a harpoon gun. The guns were often crude and could often explode. In April 1771, one was being fired at Seaford to celebrate a wedding and exploded, killing one of the wedding guests! The swivel gun on display at Seaford Museum dates from the mid-18th century and was donated by our sister museum at Newhaven.

DIGITAL SWITCHOVER One of the biggest changes in broadcasting for a generation is sweeping the country. The Digital Switchover will take effect in East Sussex through May and June next year. So, if you are not yet clear about the changes and how they may affect you, tune in to our update from local retailer and specialists Smythe & Barrie …

What Does It Mean? The Switchover means that the five ‘analogue’ channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5), which are currently received via the Hastings and Heathfield transmitters in this area, will cease. Instead, they will be broadcast via the Freeview service which will also provide additional digital TV, radio and text services.

Getting Your Home Ready For those of you who have already purchased a digital box or TV over the past few years, it will simply be a case of re-tuning via your remote control when prompted on your TV. If you haven’t upgraded your TV you will need to convert your set with the addition of a digital box, or purchase a new digital TV. This applies to every TV within your home and it is worth remembering that video recorders

40

and analogue DVD recorders will also need to be replaced with a digital recorder such as Freeview+. If you get a digital recorder with a twin tuner it will also convert your TV to digital. Whilst nearly all TVs can be converted to digital with a ‘set-top’ box, there are some great benefits to buying new. Picture and sound clarity, together with great design making the latest generation of digital TVs extremely slim, are just several good reasons. To find out more about what’s involved visit a local retailer and expert such as Smythe & Barrie in Hailsham. You can also find out more by visiting their website: www.smytheandbarrie.co.uk or visit: www.digitaluk.co.uk Smythe & Barrie, 76 High Street, Hailsham East Sussex BN27 1AU. Tel: 01323 840550

THE UNITY GROUP On the 16th November, an organised Christmas lunch for the Unity Group was held at St James’ Trust. It was prepared by the catering ladies at St James’ and was delicious - a first taste of Christmas lunch, pudding, sherry, coffee and the company shared by everyone was wonderful. These lunches have been organised by Ken and Doreen Davies (tel: 01323 898907), who are active members of The Drop In Cafe, Church Rd and St James Trust. Rita Evans organised a raffle which raised £45. Members who attended will be notified in the spring of a possible Bangers & Mash Lunch. Rita Evans will also be arranging a set lunch at Diella's restaurant, the date to be arranged. Donations of raffle prizes are very welcome for both occasions. Any contributions after the bookings at Diella's will be shared by Unity Group, Seaford East Sussex Disability Association and Community Transport for the Lewes Area Ltd (CTLA) and with prior notice CTLA can transport you to both up-and-coming events. For further details and a copy of Diella’s menu please contact Rita Evans on 01323 896877. 3 Make sure birds have some food and water.

Check frozen ponds. 3 Keep the garden tidy. Collect up any rubbish including weeds and leaves. 3 Carefully brush off any snow from trees and bushes to avoid damage. 3 Winter prune Wisterias to two or three buds whilst there are no leaves on the plant. 3 Early in the month you must start “chitting” your seed potatoes - it really does make a difference. Just place them in a tray or egg box indoors out of direct sunlight but not in the dark.

re you still undecided about what to choose for your New Year’s Resolution? Why don’t you decide to spend more time in the garden? You don’t need a big garden to enjoy its benefits; a small garden or patio will be just as enjoyable. If you have no garden then what about an allotment or sharing a garden with someone else. January can be cold one day then lovely and sunny the next. You should now be able to see the first signs of colour in both the garden and the countryside. Witch-Hazels are a favourite at this time of year together with Mahonia, Viburnam and early Helliborus.

winter Pruning

Winter pruning of established fruit trees and bushes should be completed by the end of January. These include Apples and Pears, Red, White and Black Currants, Gooseberries and Blackberries. Never prune plums in the winter. First remove all dead, diseased and overcrowded wood. This is to let in better light and air thus reducing the risk of further disease. The leading shoots of fruit trees should be cut back by one-third but remember that the harder you prune the stronger the new growth will be. Long side shoots should be reduced to only two or three buds to form fruiting spurs. Red & White Currants plus Gooseberries. Reduce side shoots back to two or three buds from the main branch. Blackcurrants fruit on both new and old wood. Prune to maintain a balance between new and old wood. Remove about one-third of the old wood each year, cutting them right back to the ground. In late January the sap is beginning to rise. Apply a Blood, Fish and Bone mix to the base of the tree or bush and re-mulch. Spray with a Winter Wash but cover any grass before spraying. mike Parker (Chairman)

seAford gArdening club We now have very dark evenings and more unsettled weather. It is a very wet day today and colder, but what we must expect now we are in the winter months. We have had the pleasure of our November speaker Michael Hoad on three previous occasions so we knew we would be in for an entertaining evening when he gave us a talk on Sussex Weald through to Walland (almost to Dungeness). He put up a map of the five Sussex rivers, all of which we would touch at some time on our journey. Of course the original outlay of the land has greatly changed over the years. Our story began at Rothersfield with its church containing some fine stained glass windows. Then on to Mayfield famous for its iron industry of former years and another fine church and lovely old houses. Mr Hoad interlaced his talk with funny stories and traditions of the various places in his story. Our next destination was Pashley Manor (right - well-known to members, as we have made two trips there in the past), with its peaceful gardens and lake. On to Batemans where Rudyard Kipling lived. A most interesting house with a fully restored water mill in the grounds. We visited Robertsbridge with its haunted pub and medieval houses. The 14th-century Bodiam Castle was the next place on his list, now owned by the National Trust and well worth a visit. Great Dexter, the home of the late Christopher Lloyd, followed with its interesting house and famous gardens. Our journey’s end was now in sight as we made for the Isles of Oxley, taking in the picturesque town and harbour of Rye, well-known for the Hawker gangs and smugglers. So much interesting information related by a very delightful and amusing speaker. Sure we will ask him again. Our next meeting will be on the 25th January when Kevin Gordon will relate the history of Seaford. We meet in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (using the rear door please) at 7.30pm.You are welcome to join us for a fun, friendly evening. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331, or visit our website at www.seafordsussex.co.uk/sgc.

POWERFUL RESOLuTiOnS

Now is the time when many of you will be thinking about the future and making a New Year’s Resolution. It is sad to say that statistics show as many as 78% of you will fail. I would like to share with you a success plan to help make your goals and dreams a reality. There are many strategies for success and this simple formula has produced amazing results for thousands of successful individuals across the world. You can set goals for yourself for all the things that you want to achieve in your future, whether that may be giving up smoking, making more money for example. However I will focus on weight loss in this article. This system can of course be used to help you set and achieve your goals, whatever they may be. l l l l l

The Success cycle - 4 Simple Steps: Have a Goal Have a Plan Take Massive Action Re-evaluate and Adjust

It is important that you start writing down all your ideas, plans and answers at this point.

HavE a GOaL Carefully consider exactly what it is you want. When you want it? Why do you want it? How are you going to get it? Is your goal in keeping with who you are? What will be different when you achieve it? What will you do if something goes wrong? What are the wider consequences? Consider family, friends and work colleagues and check if you need to do things differently to achieve your goal. Is it realistic, motivating and achievable? Take time to enjoy and experience your goal by perhaps making a picture in your mind of how you will look. You are the artist so make it as colourful, exciting, beautiful and desirable as you can. Now you can be your own director and turn it into a movie inside your head. Play it and change it until it is powerful and desirable, then use all your senses to look, listen, feel, taste, smell and enjoy it. Be sure that you are heading towards a desirable outcome. Why would you want to go there if it is not?

HavE a PLan Now that you have a goal and know when you want to achieve it, your next step is to make a plan of action. Say you weigh 80kg and your goal is to reach your target weight of 60kg and be fit enough to run a 10K

58

race in 6 months. This may seem like a huge mountain to climb so you can start to break it into manageable chunks of one month. On a piece of paper make a chart with four columns and six rows. Columns are headed (download from our website): l Date l What is my goal l What I need and am prepared to do to achieve it l What or who can help me and what qualities do I have to help me. l Evidence (weight, size, how you feel)

TakE MaSSivE acTiOn Now you have your goal and you have a plan, it’s time for you to take action. If you have followed the success cycle you will be excited, motivated and ready to go. This is the time to Live the dream and make it a reality! Stay positive and above all believe in yourself. Affirmations are important and powerful so write these down and say them to yourself often. It is possible for me to achieve it I am able to achieve it I deserve to achieve it Affirmations for our example goal could be: I am feeling healthier I am feeling fitter I am eating more healthily Remember to always have the end in mind, never give up – how close are you? All Excuses Are Equal No matter which excuse you can give, or which excuse you choose to give there IS NOT a good reason to be a failure!!!

RE-EvaLuaTE and adjuST You are now well on your way to success; however life has its ups and downs so be prepared to make adjustments to your interim goals and strategies. Be easy on yourself when things don’t turn out just as you wanted. If you have done your best, congratulate yourself on your achievements and move on towards the next one. May I wish you every success with your future and if you want to learn more about goal setting, motivation and achievement, behaviour change and weight loss come and join our exercise classes held throughout the week and Free Weight Loss Club on Wednesdays at 6.30pm at Claremont Hall, Seaford. Running commentary... Following last month’s comments from local teenage athlete Harry Strong, I feel that the other end of the age spectrum is also worthy of the spotlight. When runners reach the ‘veteran’ age category (in running terms it’s the age of 40) it certainly doesn’t signify a weakening of the flesh or spirit. In fact, for long-distance runners particularly, it can herald some of your best and most enjoyable achievements. My all-time-best run out of well over a thousand races, for instance, was recording 12.5 hours for the South Downs Way 80-mile race at the age of 46. Seaford Strider Bill Young didn’t take up running seriously until he was 48, then twenty-two years of running later, celebrated his 70th birthday by completing his 100th marathon. Running a sub 3-hour marathon is a target that many runners aspire to but don’t always achieve. Seaford-born David Beattie, now with Crawley AC managed it before and after reaching the age of 60. My aunt Grace Bulger didn’t start running until she was 69, then for quite a few years was running sub 5-hour marathons regularly. Sussex athlete, Stuart Mills, has run the Beachy Head Marathon ten times (9 as a veteran runner) winning it a record 7 times and finishing 2nd on the other three occasions.

Yoga for Mixed Abilities

You are never too old to take up running. Going slowly at first is OK, as is alternating it with walking, and it’s certain that the walking bouts will diminish and disappear eventually, or be saved just for steep hills. Enjoy the moments when a strong wind is on your back, and you find yourself going a bit faster than usual. This will quicken with your improvement and might encourage you to test yourself against other runners. Take part in races for a greater sense of achievement, and feel so much fitter from the aerobic element in running. Many people who start running in their 20s or 30s, for instance, will keep it up into their later years and, barring serious injury, will see no reason to stop. Inevitably, there comes a point when runners do begin to go slower and PBs become a distant memory but by adopting a more philosophical approach to running, it should ensure the enjoyment factor remains buoyant and enthusiasm undiminished. I once ran a marathon in 2 hours 41 minutes. Now, it’s more likely to be double that time. Does it matter? No, not at all!! Entering races is one of the best ways of becoming a stronger runner and of experiencing the camaraderie amongst runners, but it is important to remember that racing should be about more than just your finishing position and the time taken. It’s a journey too. Consider seeing a race as a journey of discovery, with its atmospheric and sometimes frenetic start, followed by a gradual settling into your race rhythm. The miles will then unfold almost seamlessly as the scenery changes and brief friendships are made with other runners along the way.You hope for a good finish… and you cross the line inwardly elated… mission accomplished. It was a journey worth taking, with time to think and sensations to experience and savour, while your legs were happily going along on autopilot. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club.

All the Wellness Coaches have achieved long lasting health improvements and/ or weight loss themselves, and are passionate about helping others experience the benefits too. The Centre is conveniently placed, and has ground floor access. We run a variety of services including FREE 1:1 Wellness Evaluations including a body composition analysis. This tells us your weight, but most importantly, what that weight is made up of! It also gives us readings for body fat, lean muscle, visceral (inner body) fat, hydration levels, weight of bones, basal metabolic rate, and metabolic age. As we know, there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, therefore these readings enable us to advise our clients individually, and personalise easy-to-follow advice accordingly. This is based on the latest research. Our doctors, nutritionists and scientists have been leading the way for over 30 years! Our role is to teach about balanced nutrition, hydration and lifestyle choices, including exercise, and help clients achieve solid results. Have you been exercising and are disappointed with your results? 80% of the result that you obtain is achieved by the nutrition that you eat! Only 20% is due to the exercise that you do. It is well known that grocery foods no longer contain the nutrients of even 20 years ago. Our cutting-edge Herbalife nutrition programmes are an easy and convenient solution that can save you money too. These enable you to achieve optimum nutrition on a daily basis and can be used for energy, and general health and wellbeing. It is scientifically developed using the best natural ingredients, to give your body what it needs on a daily basis, at a cellular

level. Perfect for a healthier breakfast or lunch option. You have to experience the benefits to appreciate just how well it is possible to feel. Are they suitable for me? If you can eat grocery food, then yes! We are also running the successful 12-Week Weight Loss Challenges where there is a chance to win £300 First Prize. This is awarded to the person who has lost the most body fat %. A key part of the challenge is nutrition and lifestyle education and support. Our last winner Roger lost 3½ stone, 35% body fat and 35cms from his measurements. His energy soared after only a couple of days! The Wellness Centre, 18 Church St. Seaford group is the most successful in the area, having come first in a local inter-group challenge. Overall the total weight lost was 327 lbs of weight, 654 slabs of butter and 364 cms lost in measurements! The next 12-Week Weight Loss Challenge starts on 10th January – pre booking essential to avoid disappointment. Only £35 to enter (£2.90 per week) What do you want to lose?? Bring a friend – referral reward scheme. WE NEED MORE HELP! If you too are interested in helping others - ask for details. Tel: 01323 325060, 9am - 3pm or 07969 041865 www.nutritionforall.co.uk. What our clients say... ‘I can’t thank you enough... This is a healthy eating plan that I know I can continue long term. I have lost 3 stone, 30% body fat and my energy went through the roof from day 3! I have kept the weight off for a year and know that I won’t put it back on again. My cholesterol is down too. The increase in energy meant that I now want to exercise more.’ ‘I have done well on previous challenges and lost a stone on this challenge. I have not been this size since I was 10 years old. I feel so well!’ ‘I valued the support and non-judgemental attitude of the coaches.’ Photo: Top ten winners from the 12-week Weight Loss Challenge.

Key for tWo revieW Genuinely one of the funniest plays I have ever seen, The Seaford Little Theatre’s performance ‘Key for Two’ was hysterical from start to finish, a real diamond of a production. ‘Key for two’ is a play that could so easily fall flat, but the cast were so perfect in their comic timing and their interchanges flowed so naturally that the production was a real success. Originally performed in 1982, the script was brilliantly revived with such vitality that it appeared timeless. Tricia Pape was fantastic as the wild and daring Harriet, who solves her financial problems and pays for her cost of living by simultaneously dating two married men (neither of whom know about each other). Harriet’s two love interests are Gordon (Dean Matthews) and Alec (Alan G Baker); the hilarity of the play ensues as her ‘foolproof ’ plan verges on collapse following the arrival of Harriet’s best friend Anne (Kay Wetherilt). The production begins with Harriet in bed with the first of her male companions, a seemingly normal husband-wife set up, until the issue of house-keeping arises and he claims he doesn’t even give his wife this much money. At this point the ‘fictional’ character of ‘Mummy’ is introduced. The idea of Mummy is created by Harriet as an excuse for why her two lovers can never spend more than their allotted time in her house. Mummy,

an extremely straight-laced woman with a penchant for vodka and overall terrifying character, is also is the scapegoat for Harriet’s overspending. Although Mummy is a fake character she provides immense amusement through the frustration she causes between Harriet’s two lovers. The perfect life of Harriet begins to crumble when Gordon slips on a halibut and badly sprains his leg. Forced to stay in Harriet’s bed, he sets in motion a chain of events so ridiculous and extreme that it leaves you in hysterical disbelief. Anne turns up unannounced after a tiff with her husband, shortly followed by an over-keen Alec. Harriet desperately tries to play the characters off against each other. Unbeknown to either lover, Gordon becomes Anne’s ‘husband’ and Alec is transformed into Harriet’s insane criminal husband. The situation escalates as Gordon calls his wife Magda and lies about his whereabouts, saying he is staying in a nursing home for the night. Magda (Angie Wright) traces the call and appears on Harriet’s doorstep demanding to see her husband. In a fit of desperation Anne and Harriet turn the house into the most unconventional nursing home known to man. All the characters are weaved into this incomprehensible story, which becomes more and more farcical and ludicrous by the second, with each person believing a different and more fantastical lie than the next. The interactions between Dean Matthews and Alan G Baker are brilliantly funny, and both actors did a tremendous job at making this production so comic. Their confusion at the whole situation, but willingness to go along with all the absurdity, is hilarious. Equally, the direction by Samuel Nunn was wonderful and he really captured the play’s sparkle. All round, this was a joy to watch and had the audience laughing from start to finish.

A fantastic cast, great direction and exact comic timing made this production wickedly funny. ‘Key for two’ has turned out to be my favourite production I have ever seen at Seaford Little Theatre. By Emily-Jane Polling

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

Seaford Scene History Article

THE FRENcH INvASIONS OF SEAFORD

Seaford was raided several times by French ships during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), and afterwards. During these attacks, invaders “corporally wounded and slew” locals, stole livestock, and set fire to buildings. They burned down Sutton Church, which was on Sutton Corner where the Texaco Garage now stands, and on another occasion, they reached as far as Selmeston, where they took villagers as prisoners. During the last raid, in 1545, the large French army was humiliated by a mob of locals. The leader of this defending army was Nicholas Pelham, a quiet family man in his 30s. Pelham lived in a huge estate in Laughton, and was apparently “a learned person...of a pious disposition and excellent morals”. However, he was best known for his role in a notorious local murder trial. This was in connection with Thomas Fiennes, a young Baron who lived in Herstmonseaux Castle. In April 1541, Fiennes took his friends poaching for deer on Nicholas Pelham’s

land. The hunters were caught by three of Pelham’s servants, and a fight ensued. One of Pelham’s men “received such hurt that he died”. Fiennes pleaded innocent in court. He had a strong case, but he and three others were found guilty and executed. The case was widely seen as a miscarriage of justice. One writer blamed Pelham, saying he had pursued the case too eagerly, showing “tyranny and jealousy”. We don't know how widespread this opinion was, but the case was surely something Pelham wouldn’t have wanted to be remembered for. England had invaded France in 1544 and in the following July, a French fleet of over 200 ships crossed the Channel to return the favour. On July 19th, there was a sea battle just off Portsmouth. It was during this battle that the British Mary Rose sunk. Most of its 400 crew died, including the ship's captain, Sir George Carew, who was a relative of Nicholas Pelham. After the battle, the French fleet retreated to the Isle of Wight. Henry VIII sent messengers to the southern counties warning people that the French might attack soon. At 10am on July 25th, 1,500 men landed in the Buckle area of Seaford beach “with the intention of burning and sacking the place”. They didn't get far. Pelham, who was presumably nursing a grudge over Carew's death, had already raised an army. After a bloody battle on the beach, the invaders were forced to retreat. Pelham was the hero of the day, and had saved his reputation. He was elected to parliament for Alfriston in 1547. Two years later, he was knighted, and made Sheriff of Sussex and Surrey. According to Sussex historian Mark Antony Lower, writing in 1868, this was the last really interesting thing to happen in Seaford: “The subsequent history of Seaford presents us with few incidents of interest.” Steve Ramsey, with thanks to Kevin Gordon..

MUSIcAL SHOWTIME Once again Ivor and Val Lawrence did members old and new proud with a superb concert, Musical Showtime, at Seaford Community College on Saturday 26th November. Two wonderful players were Rosalie Birchmore and Richard Bowers, playing all styles of music on keyboard including the golden oldie themes ‘Affair To Remember’, ‘The Glass Mountain’ and many more. The decor, drinks, refreshments etc. were very welcome whilst the raffle was a hit with the members, as always. The school theatre, was full, and we had a wonderful evening. For more details, contact Val and Ivor Lawrence on 01273 512771. All excellent easy listening music.

A GOOD READ

eastsussex.gov.uk/libraries

72

At several points during the novel, it is easy to forget that these characters are fictional, that Harris not Harriet, is the author, and that Ned’s paintings cannot be seen in galleries, because he did not exist beyond these pages. As the story progresses, you will find yourself reading faster and faster, but then, once you reach the end, wanting to read it all over again.

Harris has already proved that she is a fine storyteller in her debut, The Observations, and Gillespie and I cements that reputation. She skilfully moves between the novel’s two time periods: Harriet as an elderly lady in 1933, and Harriet as an earnestly helpful friend of the family some 45 years earlier, slowly revealing almost enough information to make us believe we understand. The twists are not over-dramatised, the rug is not pulled from under us, but tugged just enough to make us stumble a little and doubt not only Harriet Baxter, but ourselves.

How to find us

KR

Jane Harris uses Harriet as the narrator of her second novel, a move which allows her to initially intrigue and then repeatedly wrong-foot the reader. Our view of the complex Gillespie family matriarchal Elspeth, Ned, his put-upon wife Annie, their children Sibyl and Rose - comes entirely through Harriet’s eyes. At first we do not question her perceptions as the relationships unfold and minor crises are dealt with, but then, as events take a more sinister turn, we begin to question her impartiality.

We close on Saturday 28th January 2012 and re-open at our temporary site on Monday 20th February 2012:

In 1888, following the death of her aunt, Harriet Baxter visits Glasgow to see the wonders of the International Exhibition. A chance encounter leads to an unlikely connection with the family of struggling artist Ned Gillespie, and sets in motion a chain of events with devastating consequences and far-reaching repercussions.

Supporting Families in Seaford

SEASONAL SUPPORT FROM THE PEOPLE OF SEAFORD Friday 2nd December saw the start of the annual Christmas festivities in Seaford starting with the Late Night Shopping which began with the arrival of Father Christmas to turn on the town lights display, and the residents turned out in full force to mark the arrival of Advent. More importantly, the people of Seaford showed their support to WAVES, our local Seaford-based charity, which works with families and young people in the local area. As the Mayor’s charity of the year, WAVES benefited from being the only charity to carry out collections, with many volunteers giving up their evening to be out in the town centre armed with their collection boxes. The WAVES volunteers agreed that the atmosphere was “very special” and that Seaford had done itself proud with the support it gave to the collection. The total raised during the evening is not known at present but the final amount will be extremely useful for the charity in order to help it continue the fantastic work the staff do with its network of supportive and specialised volunteers. The WAVES display stand at the market on Broad Street was a highlight, showing precisely the incredible work that the WAVES volunteers and family workers do for children and young people, families and carers in Seaford. Earlier this year, events such as the Mayor’s Open Gardens 2011 were held in support of WAVES. This, as well as Seaford Late Night Shopping, is just one of many events that have taken place, and many are to come, as part of the Mayor’s charity of the year programme. The climax of this programme will be the Mayor’s Mad March, when all organisations are invited to hold any type of event to raise money for WAVES. Building on the great work already done over the last few months, and the success of Seaford’s Late Night Shopping, it looks to be an exciting new year for Seaford’s fundraising scene, and for WAVES.

Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful! One Boxing Day morning several years ago, I made a mad dash to a neighbouring town to hunt through the sales for a Christmas present I’d forgotten. I was low on fuel, but couldn’t find a service station open so decided to risk it. I ended up on the hard shoulder of the motorway. The police officer who came to my aid admonished me. “Don’t you realise how dangerous it is to head out in these conditions not fully prepared?”

So, how can we best prepare for winter driving? The first and most obvious thing is to conduct regular maintenance checks on our vehicle. Ensuring that the oil, water, tyres, lights, battery, wipers, screen wash and brakes are all topped up and in good working order can help avoid breakdown or accident. And don’t forget to keep an eye on fuel levels too! In addition, it is a good idea to kit the car out with a basic winter survival kit. This could include de-icer, an ice scraper, shovel, tow rope, jump leads, torch, first aid kit, map, blanket, energy food, bottled water, spare clothing and footwear, regular medication, and breakdown membership details! In addition, never venture out without cash or cards and a charged-up mobile phone. So what else can you do once behind the wheel to increase your chances of safe winter driving? Whether facing snow, ice, rain, fog or wind, the advice is basically the same – stay alert, slow down and keep your distance. Remember to look

White Lion Hotel

ahead as you drive. For example, watch for early signs of ice – does the road ahead glisten, and does the steering feel suddenly light? Drive more slowly than usual, and make sure you accelerate, steer and brake gently to reduce the risk of skidding. Apply the two-second rule, (time the gap between your vehicle and the one in front) to give yourself more stopping time. In addition, it is important to see and be seen, so use dipped headlights in rain, snow or fog, and keep the air conditioning or de-mister on to keep your windows clear. If, however, you do find yourself in a skid despite your best efforts, it is important not to panic! Your instinct may be to brake and steer out of trouble, but the best plan is to take your foot off the brake, step on the clutch, and steer in the direction of the skid. To do this, look where you want your vehicle to go and steer towards that spot, being careful not to over steer. Although the advice we often receive these days is to stay at home when the weather is bad, we all know that sometimes this is unavoidable. In addition to following the advice above, before setting out on any journey let your family or friends know where you are going, what route you plan on taking and what time you expect to arrive. Allow yourself extra travel time, keep the radio on for regular weather or road reports, and don’t forget to clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors and the roof! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

STUDENTS’ TAkE INITIAL SURvEY OF SEAFORD PROMENADE Students from the University of Brighton are joining forces with a community group and local school children on a new project to generate ideas for the enhancement of Seaford’s promenade. BA(Hons) Architecture students and the Office for Spatial Research at the Faculty of Arts are working with the Seaford Community Partnership to help identify ways in which the promenade can be made more attractive and enjoyable for residents to use and draw more visitors into the town. Second-and third-year students are visiting the seafront, conducting surveys, analytical exercises and running a design competition to investigate and draw up visions for the beach and local environment.

Seaford Community Partnership. The project allows us to provide students with the experience of working with a live brief and gives them an insight into how architecture can engage with community issues.” Final drawings based on small, sustainable ideas will feature in an exhibition, which will be held in Seaford during spring 2012. The collaborative project also involves local primary schools: Annecy Catholic Primary School, Chyngton School and Cradle Hill School, and the children will be submitting their own ideas as part of the exhibition.

Keith Blackburn, chair of the Seaford Community Partnership says, “We are really excited about this project. We’d like to enhance the promenade and lead visitors into the town from the beach so that they can visit the shops, restaurants and cafes. We’re hoping that the exhibition will throw up lots of ideas for people to discuss and think about, acting as a springboard for the town to bid for funding to take some of the ideas forward.” Luis Diaz and Tony Roberts from the Office for Spatial Research at the University of Brighton said: “We are delighted to be taking part in the project with the

EASTBOURNE MOvIEMAkERS cLUB There aren't many clubs for amateur video makers, but Eastbourne Moviemakers plugs the gap in East Sussex. The club is based in Eastbourne, and boasts members from Bexhill, Hailsham, and - yes Seaford!

Newhaven Art Club was formed over 50 years ago and for many of those years met at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven, East Sussex. They now meet in the picturesque village of Bishopstone, at Bishopstone Parish Hall at the rear of St Andrew’s Church every Monday afternoon at 2pm. We are a friendly group of artists from Newhaven, Peacehaven, Seaford, and the surrounding area, who meet weekly to paint and draw together. Some of us are experienced artists while others are new to painting. Although we don't offer instruction there is always someone on hand to help beginners with any questions they may have.

Members come to show their videos, ask advice, and hear a variety of speakers on video-related topics. The main aim is to team up with other members and produce collaborative efforts. Apart from the satisfaction of being creative and learning new skills, this can lead to national acclaim in the amateur movie world. If you have an interest in making video, why not check out the website, www.eastbournemoviemakers.co.uk or come along to a meeting or two, free of charge! Eastbourne Moviemakers meet on the first and third Wednesday of every month at St Lukes parish room, Stone Cross, from 7.45 to 9.45 pm. Contact the Secretary, Julia Galvin, on 01323 507712 for further information. Photo: club members working on a project

Our programme is very varied and includes a mutual discussion afternoon once a month where members can bring their paintings to be viewed in a friendly and supporting atmosphere. Our winter programme includes demonstrations and life models as well as afternoons of doing "just what you want". During the summer months, there are outside painting and sketching afternoons at local beauty spots as well as meetings at the homes of members where we indulge in tea and cakes in the garden. We also hold an Annual Exhibition in November at the Anzac Room in the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven, where members can exhibit up to six paintings. There is a small charge for exhibiting. Our annual general meeting is in October every year and the subscription for 2011 is £25 per annum. Why not come along to one of meetings and see how you get on! Look forward to seeing you there.

MERcREAD YOUTH cENTRE The new building was completed on time in November and is already in use, providing wonderful new facilities. The official opening for invited guests is planned for January 20th. An Open Day on February 18th will enable all those interested to visit and find out more about the new opportunities provided for all young people and for the wider community of Seaford.
