Month on month Gallery Uno has consistently presented stunning and, in some cases, surprising and extraordinary exhibits of art, craft and design from members of the Sussex Arts Collective. Each of the previous seven exhibitions have not failed to deliver to visitors an exceptional range and depth of artwork. Their eighth exhibition of the year, UNO22 EIGHT, will be no exception. At Uno we strongly believe that if you are going to invest in artwork either as a gift or as a focal point for the home, you are guaranteed to that you are getting genuine high quality local art. Only by exhibiting and selling locally-sourced work and sharing the costs of running the gallery can we do this whilst at the same time rightfully reward the endeavours of the exhibitors themselves. We hope through your enduring support that we can continue to bring you brilliant pieces of artwork that inspire and delight you, and bring some cheer in these troubled times.
This month’s featured artist is ceramicist Liza Morton whose work is featured on our current poster. Liza like so many students who attended either Brighton or Sussex Universities, fell in love with the Sussex coast and countryside, settled here and made it her home.
Liza Morton BA (Hons) PGCE – Ceramics
Originally from Essex, Liza Morton studied Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at Brighton University in the late 1990s, specialising in Plastics and Visual Art in her final year. She then went on to complete a PGCE, a post-graduate course in teaching art, culminating in a 20-year-long career as an Art teacher and department head in several schools in Surrey. Liza taught Art and Photography to A Level, with her students obtaining outstanding levels of achievement every year. In 2016 Liza moved back to Sussex and became a fulltime Artist and Ceramicist. Liza’s ceramics are inspired by her love of animals. Her Woofing Fabulous brand of animal sculptures always bring a smile to her customers, who often start with a small sculpture and then move on to commission a larger piece of their furry friends.
Following a long period of sketch and design work, (her beautifully kept and detailed sketchbooks are never far from her side) Liza uses a combination of hand built and thrown clay structures to create the forms in her work. She also uses a variety of glazes to build up texture. Her work is fired in her own kiln nicknamed ‘Bertha’ Liza’s work can be grouped into several collections: Colourful Dog Sculptures (using buff clay for structure), and Flora and Fauna – (Outdoor stoneware ceramics and garden ornaments). Liza’s signature quirky seagulls on deckchairs have been sold all over the world through www.woofingfabulous.co.uk, each one unique and handmade in her seaside studio.
Liza has been a member of the Sussex Art Collective since 2017. Her work is also available in Brighton Open Houses every May during the Brighton Festival. She opens her own studio to the public in Saltdean and is also a member of Kemptown Arts. Liza’s work is also available through her website www.lizamorton.com and you can follow her making process on her very popular instagram page @woofingfabulous.
