Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford this month. Art

The summer-long Beacon Show, set up and being run by Sussex Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers (SCIP) continues with its exhibition of informative blocks along the seafront. On Saturday 30th July a free drawing workshop is taking place on the beach, for children of 8+ accompanied by an adult, and also for adults. Book this and other workshops via wearescip.co.uk. Next up is a series of free paper craft workshops for children on Monday 8th (age 6+) and Friday 19th August (age 10+), 10am to 12 noon at the Crypt Gallery, Church Street, plus the Koinobori Fish Kite Workshop at the Mercread Centre in the Crouch on Saturday 27th August from 10am until 4pm where you can learn how to harness wind power with a Japanese kite-making workshop. After the success of Cliffhanger at South Hill Barn last year, Last Minute Artists are back with an even larger exhibition, Cliffhanger 2, from Friday 5th to Sunday 14th August, free entry, see page 59. Go to the Crypt Gallery from Friday 5th August to Wednesday 10th August for an exhibition of Harry Parke’s work including paintings, prints and postcards of Sussex’s buildings and landscapes, biblical subjects and spiritual figures. Next up at the Crypt, from Friday 12th to Tuesday 23rd August is an exhibition of landscapes and other works by Richard K Potter, followed by Seaford Art Club’s annual show from Friday 26th to Wednesday 31st August. Theatre, Saxon Lane on Saturday and Sunday 30th and 31st July with performances at 3pm and 6.30pm on both days. The musical has lyrics and music by Tim Minchin, and was written by Dennis Kelly from Roald Dahl’s book. Tickets from ticketsource.co.uk

Jazz

Pianist/singer Neal Richardson and his trio are back at Splash Point Jazz Club at The View, Seaford Head Golf Club, on Wednesday 10th August with Lo Polidoro. During lockdown Lo Polidoro and Nigel Broderick clocked up an amazing 100+ livestreams, playing everything from French Chanson, swing, jazz standards and more. In addition to multi-lingual vocals, Lo and Nigel play many instruments including guitar, piano, ukulele and accordion – all with an irresistible sense of fun. Seaford Community Cinema returns to the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane on Friday 2nd September at 7.30pm with true story and drama-comedy The Duke (12) starring Jim Broadbent as the man who stole a Goya. Other big names include Helen Mirren, Stephen Rashbrook and Anna Maxwell-Martin. This is followed on 9th September by Ali & Ava (15), another UK-made film, this one about an individually very different couple who bond over a child. For more info see page 88. Folk

Seaford Sessions is hosting The Paul McKenna Band at Seaford Little Theatre, Steyne Road on Saturday 17th ` September at 7.30pm, tickets from seafordsessions.org and the Tourist Information Centre, Church Street.

Festivals

Celebrate LGBTQ+ and diversity on Saturday 27th August as Seahaven Pride comes to the Martello Fields from 11am to 9pm, with music, food stalls, bars and more. Show your pride by supporting this event.
