Martello Rotary Seaford

Martello Rota ry Seafo rd What does the future hold for Rotary?

I hope this update finds you all well and coping with the ongoing new normal. As restrictions ease we are completely aware of the importance of social distancing and appropriate hygiene practices. We are also increasingly aware that the “new world” into which we are emerging has fundamental differences from previous years. As a club we will not be able to raise funds by running bars at events, organising the Seaford Proms, the Seaford Half Marathon or collecting at events such as the Bonfire Society fireworks night. This has made us take a concentrated look at what it really means to be a member of Rotary, supporting the community and maintaining the Service Before Self ideal.

We have made a fundamental shift in how we intend to support the local community, how we raise funds, liaise with the community, and perform a function that adds value without causing risk.

We recognise that we need to attract new members by working in a flexible and open fashion, removing some of the more traditional perceptions of Rotary. Those of you who have been helping in the Covid-19 crisis may be looking for alternative channels to maintain your involvement within community support, and we may be just the organisation to talk to. We need volunteers at all levels to become involved in helping us to: work with the Local Council and interested

Friends groups in the maintaining development of green spaces in Seaford; assist in environmental programmes such as tree support those still in isolation or who need to be helped back into the community; provide delivery services for those who are housebound; support our Living History programme where we share with pupils what it was like to live 20, 30, 40 or more years ago before the mobile phone or tablets arrived on the scene; support our general social programmes that help We would love people to join Rotary but realise this is sometimes too much of a commitment. If you can spare a few hours a month or more, please do get in touch and see if you can help.

Virtual run

As we cannot hold the Half Marathon this year, we have decided to hold a Virtual Marathon instead. As many of you will know, the Martello Rotary Club in Seaford has had to cancel the Half Marathon planned for July, and a further race, a Seaford Head 10K planned for September is in some considerable doubt. So as an alternative we offered a virtual event during July, with all monies raised going to a mix of charities.
