Seaford’s Platinum Jubilee
by Fran Tegg
What a better opportunity to bring the community together than a street party for our Queen’s Jubilee. That’s what we all thought when we were granted permission to close the road, but none of us could have imagined the impact and fantastic energy it could bring to our lovely street and our now bigger community. I’m sure not many could have foreseen how the impact on good old fashioned community bonding would be replenished with our street party. Never did I expect the impact, it was totally amazing! Chichester Road in Seaford has over 100 residences. Once our amazing neighbour Paul, with his lovely wife Jo had organised the closing of the road, it was time for a group of us to plan how we could make the day special. We knew we wanted something fun and low key, no big extravagance but just lots of fun kids activities, whilst us grown ups could engage with neighbours who we should have met many many years ago. What a great start with people galore all chatting and laughing. Our introduction to the afternoon was announced with a poem by our amazing resident Brett. In 1952 they said… “Hey Liz put this on your head!” A crown of gold and jewels it is, It is now yours, your Majesty Liz.

Wear it with pride and dignity, Lead your people on this island in the sea. 70 years have been and gone, Since that day you put it on.
You’ve travelled the world, flying the flag Keeping Britain great, you never flagged. People the world love you so, The people of Britain won’t let you go!
So here’s to you, from all the land And with a glass, can we all stand. So here’s to you, 70 years it has been Raise a glass and ‘God Save The Queen!’
With much cheer our day began and got better and better – neighbours young and old getting to know each other, neighbours who have lived on the road for years and years, having never met, laughing, new neighbours bonding over crazy life coincides, chatting for hours, children meeting friends and games galore – treasure hunts, quizzes, splat the rat, pavement chalking and more. Children were enjoying cycling, scooting and just playing on the closed road for hours with new found friends – not bothered or interested in their tablets, play stations etc! Chichester road couldn’t have wished for more.
Thank you Queen Elizabeth II for everything you have done to serve our country, but also immensely from Chichester road, how we have all relished in the love of community spirit. We are stronger and greater with love, compassion and to be together. Chichester Road you rock!
