Uno22: Three – An Uplifting New Display for Spring at Seaford’s New Gallery

Winter will soon be banished to memory at Gallery Uno when Seaford’s new art gallery presents their third exhibition of 2022. As we approach springtime UNO22: THREE will lift the heart and will be a treat to the eyes. There will be indeed some wonderful things on display that make thoughtful and original gifts or something to enhance your home, and if you are so tempted a purchase would not break the bank. As with every UNO and Sussex Arts Collective exhibition the guiding principle is to bring to the forefront the fantastic talent and diversity of artists, designers and craftspeople working in our highly inspirational county. No more so than our next artist under the spotlight, Ian O’Halloran, who will be exhibiting during UNO22: THREE.

IAN OHALLORAN – Printmaker
Ian describes himself as an Artist, Gardener and Musician; more or less in that order. He followed an unconventional route into the Arts; he didn’t grow up having a passion to draw and paint. On leaving school he went to Hastings’s College to study Building and Construction. From there he went on to train as a Civil Engineer for East Sussex County Council in the Highways Department. Eleven years on, he decided that the world didn’t need any more roads and bridges and realised that he needed to do something more creative with his life. Aged 29, he abandoned a perfectly good career and enrolled at Eastbourne College to study Art and Design.
He had always been inspired by the English landscape and the work by artists who portray it especially Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious. He is particularly drawn to landscape that he considers as ‘ancient’ those of myth and legend; ones that tells a story. As a result he often includes standing stones, dolmen, chalk hill figures and trackways in his work.
Although his work is based on actual locations, he doesn’t try to depict a true representation. Instead he conveys a feeling of what it is like to be there by using colour to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.
Having studied painting at Eastbourne College he had several successful one-man shows of his oil paintings in the early 2000s. Around 2008 Ian started exploring printmaking techniques, particularly multi-block lino print, and this now forms the main part of his artistic output. Each intricate design is painstakingly printed one colour at a time from several carved blocks. Subsequently each edition is strictly limited. In 2013 his print Dartmoor Oak was selected to be part of The Artist of the Year show sponsored by The Artists and Illustrators Magazine at the Mall Galleries, and in 2016 he was commissioned to create a print for the cover for Mary Ann Ochota’s book Hidden Histories: A Spotters Guide to the British Landscape.
In 1994 Ian and his wife moved to their current property to embark on a life’s work transforming a 5-acre field into what he calls a garden smallholding for self-sufficiency and wildlife. www.morethanjustagarden. co.uk.
