The House on the Cliff Video Documentary

Over the last year I’ve had the privilege to work with Lyn Lawson, author of The House on the Cliff, bringing Lynn’s words to life as a documentary, highlighting life and times of a house no longer in existence. It’s the story of a building that stood on Seaford Head: it’s first owner Maria Fleming Baxter, [1897-1907] decided to escape the busy metropolis of London to relax and take in the Seaford air.

Life back then was a simple affair, if you were wealthy, then land was affordable, and what better place to live than Seaford? Plans were drawn up and a ninebedroom cottage was built, attended by three servants. By this time (1864) the railway had arrived and Seaford had become a hub for leisure pursuits. Over a period of 70 years the house was occupied by various families and was converted into a hotel, until its demise in the 1960s when it was demolished and sold off to developers. The documentary tells the story through postcard images and personal recollections from local Seaford residents. Kevin Gordon, local historian, recounts the war years, when Seaford hosted many soldiers based here.

The documentary is previewing on Sunday 8th May at 2pm, at the Little Theatre, Seaford. Chris Conil, the video producer and Lynn Lawson, author of The House on the Cliff, will be on hand to answer any questions about the production of the film. Do come and enjoy a moment of historical reference to a time long gone.
